Not a huge Metallica person but like I could vibe with this. I would listen to this high

Good ol classic Metallica.

I had two cans of Monster today, biking back and forth between our old apartment and the new house, trying to get the last of our stuff out. Heart racing, music pumping, I mean, man, I got stuff DONE today. Was it the energy drink? Was it the riffs? I still didn't understand a single lyric because Hetfield sounds the way he sounds (not as bad here, but still). Whatever it was, I was a beast today. Brutal.

One of my favorite metal albums and my favorite Metallica albums. A little repetitive towards the end, but enough songs stood out to make up for it. 4/5

In my rebellious teenager phase, I tried and failed to get into Metallica. No I’m in my rebellious adult phase, nothing much has changed. I just don’t find the majority of Metallica’s work sonically interesting enough - though I’m sure this album must have hit like a ton of bricks back in 1986. While there are some good moments when the thrash hits its groove, there are too many bloated tracks (the title track just doesn’t need to be over 8 minutes long), and the production on Hetfield’s vocals has always grated on me. It’s a solid 2 for me, elevated by the singular outstanding track Orion. Although I still prefer the Rodrigo y Gabriela cover.

Second Metallica album I’ve listened to and it was good. I’ll have to listen closer next time to the lyrics

Album goes so hard. Not a dull moment, everything is great from start to end. Favorites are "Master of Puppets", "Disposable Heroes" and "Leper Messiah"

Master of puppets slaps, but I continually struggle with how the mixes of Metallica seems super thin for me. I want more low end damnit

This is the fucking thing with 80s metal, man! If each of these songs were like 50% shorter, this would’ve been really solid, but as is they’re not interesting enough to justify how long they make you spend with them.

"still looking for that wow" is what I said yesterday, and maybe is something I should say everyday since we have been given a WOW. Still not my favorite Metallica album, it's an easy five stars. This, along with many other Metallica albums, has a special place in my heart. This on in particular, I picked up my first CD at Half Price Books in Chicago. Listening to Battery in the car with Auntie Susan and family and having to turn it off after that song because I don't think anyone was a fan. But I also made a movie based on The Thing That Should Not Be when I was in highschool which was a mixture of me playing my electric drums, stevies guitar, and searching for where Dad was in the house. Master of Puppets is probably one of the best Metallica songs of their entire discography and only recently Lisa told me that its "Master of Puppets, I'm pulling your strings" not "is pulling your strings" so I'm still learning the intricacies of this band. Favorite Songs: Battery (that intro...), Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and Orion (an 8 minute instrumental that gets your head bobbing). Album Art: The Master of Puppets (perhaps the government? since that is a theme that carries into their next album) pulling the strings of all the disposable heroes (maybe veterans if you look closely at the dog tag on the front cross). ICONIC.

Truly epic. One of the great Metallica albums to be certain. Not sure where this ranks in the catalog for me but it's up there. Opens with one of my absolute favorite Metallica songs, "Battery." Love the acoustic guitar part, and then of course the explosion into electric sound. Some other classic hits on here too like the title track. This was a staple in the Metallica phase that Alex and I had, and I really can't in good faith give it less than a 4.5. I had to run it back today to see if it's a fiver, and on second listen I knew it had to be done. I know so many of these tracks very well, and to end up with 6 of the 8 staying in my playlist, it's gotta be a five from me. I have a feeling this would end up my number 1 or 2 Metallica album, up there with the Black Album and And Justice for All, we'll have to see when those pop up. Favorite tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Sanitarium, Leper Messiah, Orion. Album art: Definitely iconic, I've always loved this one. Great colors, like a sunset inn hell. Creepy puppet master pulling strings on the crosses in what seems to be a military memorial/graveyard. Someone much wiser than me will have to explain the political implications, if any. 5/5

Is it Metallica's best? Possibly, yes, competing with Ride the Lightning.

Good album

amazing metal album, not even a huge metal fan but this album is GREAT.

From the services available, I could only get one song and not the whole album. Metallica seems like a band I should like, but they have never connected with me. I feel like listening to the one song available I have basically heard every Metallica song. In summary, meh.

While this may come as a surprise, I'm not a huge metal fan. I sure do like my heavy rock in general, but I had this album on cassette back in the mid-'80s and didn't bother getting it on CD when I was building my collection, so that says something. But damn, you have to love the scope of these tunes. Everything is majestic, tight, and while the songs wind and stray, this band is fine-tuning the art of bringing it back to repeated and recognizable themes on this album and there is a musicality and songcraft that sets them apart from their peers. And Lars on drums is pretty darned good, in addition to all the other noise this band makes. This was the album that started Metallica's acceptance into the mainstream, which, unbelievably, did not alienate the band's ultra-dedicated fans. They found a way to maintain the metal majesty and attitude and just kept sweeping more people into the fold by writing songs that resonate and brandishing an attitude that straddles the best of metal and "popular" music. Even the cliché lyrics — sanitarium! — ring as honest, and I've grown to appreciate the dry drum sounds and how every instrument sounds isolated from the others. It's a lot to take in as a whole, but this landmark album holds up, in my estimation. Master! Master!

This doesn't really speak to me, though it's fun to drive to and these guys sure can play their asses off. I can dig one or two Metallica songs. A whole album's a bit much, though I did dig Leper Messiah, so that was a cool new find. Sadie digs Metallica, though she said Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning were better.

I am not a metal head. I can appreciate that many folks enjoy this fast, loud, head banging cacophony. Listening to Master of Puppets (the song) there are some elements I like---the drums, some of the guitar riffs, but when you put it all together I physically get knots in my stomach and my ears ring. The volume for today's album was the same as yesterday's and I had to turn this down to 4 rather than the previous day's 11. I appreciate the political statements throughout the album, particularly on Disposable Heroes. The cover art is great and I always thought the Metallica logo did a good job at capturing the essence of the band/music genre. Bottom line: metal makes me angry.

I actually enjoyed that way more than I though I would It’s so easy for metal to be so generic and repetitive and while this album started out like that for me, by the end it definitely won me over with a lot more creative songs I think my favorite song was Orion, I really digged that 3/4 groove, reminded me of Pink Floyd and yeah the latter half of the album was a lot more likable to me, it felt more creative and experimental in the AC/DC vs Metallica argument, I’m always gonna pick AC/DC but still, Metallica has some neat stuff I can appreciate 9/10

Solid metal album

Another Metallica album, and where does it leave me? Unimpressed with this beloved band and sad. Sad because I don't get it. I feel like I'm missing something. I like heavy metal but this is just repetitive. The lead vocals do nothing for me. It's long and doesn't feel like it goes anywhere, like every other Metallica album I've listened to. Maybe one day I'll get it, but that day isn't today.

It's up against tough competition but this is probably their best album. It contains an outrageous number of powerful and catchy riffs. I love the instrumentals and guitar solos that appear throughout the album and make use of the less common modes. I really enjoy the devastating, chugging riff on "The Thing That Should Not Be" that is so dark and heavy it has it's own event horizon. "Orion" is another highlight for me. An 8 and a half minute metal instrumental that is exciting and engaging all the way through and even has some delicate and vulnerable moments.

Classic Metallica. I listen to a lot of metal so I know just how influential they are. Solid album throughout. Great thrash. I just wish the bass was louder.

I was already a fan of Metallica before this, but it was nice to listen to some songs that aren't in their top 5. I would say that it requires a specific mood or moment. Pretty good all around, might listen to this whole album again if I don't know what else to listen to. Master of Puppets and Battery are definitely the banger outliers.

Metallicas thrash metal masterpiece. Personally I prefer the black album but this hits harder and is a 5 star album.

Metallica was my first favorite band as a kid and will always hold a special place in my heart because of it. I'd personally put Ride the Lightning above this album but both are unimpeachable classics.

Didn’t really grow up with metallic as I’m a 200s boys, so I don’t have the same nostalgia s everyone else, not their best album at all

Well I’m no Metallica fan per se… always felt the they were a bit naff… but I grew up on a post Black Album Metallica - one where they were lost in self absorbed excesses and not the Metallica of Master of Puppets. Besides maybe the overwrought evil cackles at the end of the title track - listening to this album now with hindsight is this is unparalleled genre album - this is as Beatles as metal can get yet still retain its cred. It’s an opus of grand proportions - wonderful musicianship (except Lars - fuck Lars), and surprisingly lucid songwriting - even after all these years. There have been better metal songs and maybe one or two better albums - but none as influential and important as this one. Now with the benefit of time past - so far after almost 4 decades no one has made metal so good, accessible, yet still heavy and ballsy.

A really solid album from fairly early in Metallica's career. You can definitely hear the influence of Diamond Head and the twin guitars are reminiscent of UFO and Thin Lizzy. Standout tracks are the brilliant Master of Puppets and The Thing That Should Not Be. A few other tracks are a bit plodding, but overall a really good listen

Here we go again. I don't care but I should care more. On the way to soccer games, the boys like to listen to "pump up" music which usually skews "classic metal." Whenever we try Metallica, it doesn't work out. Is it because Lars is a talentless tool? Maybe. But I think it's because SOME melody is needed for us soft suburban boys...

I never listened to this band much when they were putting stuff out, and - honestly - I probably would have hated it at the time. But now, it’s hitting me at the right time. I can’t even explain what I like about it - the music is cool, there is some fun wordplay, but nothing objectively special. Still - I really like it.

I have seen the concert of Metallica in Barcelona many years ago, It was great.

Some good guitar and drums! They are obviously a classic in this genre for a reason, but it seems just a bit too similar song to song and didn't wow me as much as I expected it to

You've got to be in the right mood for this album but this came up on a day that I was in that mood. Great album. Love the intensity of it.

Honest to God thought I could smash through a brick wall listening to this album. The bass and drums are heavy throughout and there’s a reason Metallica is notoriously one of the best in the heavy metal genre. Highly recommend listening to this when mowing the lawn- you will think you can mow 20 acres no problem.

metallica is very heavy metal which i am not super hard core fan of. it was very chaotic all around, some of it was okay but overall it was a lot.

Man, was I ready to hate this. I really cannot stand the Metallica you hear on the radio - every song some diversion in E minor with James Hetfield's awful stupid growly roar after every phrase. I really really don't like them, and only had been peripherally aware of their early material ("...And Justice For All" and back) - I recall appreciating a few cuts so I'm ready... And...i still don't *really* like this - thrash is not my bag in any fashion. But there's a lot to appreciate musically here - twin guitar parts (as a big Maiden fan I do like these parts), acoustic-to-electric dynamics, time signature changes. From a musician p.o.v. I can listen for these. Favourite parts: middle section in "Master of Puppets" - sounds like a full Iron Maiden tribute - and "Orion" (no vocals, mostly medium tempo). Least favourite parts: anything double-timed (alas, most of the album) and any part where Hetfield is singing (again...). It's a personal taste thing - mostly the frenetic pace is nothing I can identify with or enjoy; those double-kick drums assaulting my ears don't help either - I absolutely do get why some people like this, I'm just not one of them. 2 stars is my personal rating but it's also unquestionably a creative album and showing off some impressive musical chops; stuck out in the 80s in a time where melodic poppy hard rock was dominating. 6/10 for impact - 2 stars for me

5/13/2022 - ALBUM #107 Today's Album: "Master Of Puppets" by Metallica - This album was on that I have been excited to get to since it's popped up on the generator. I've always wanted to get into Metallica because many of my friends have raved about them, but never giving them a close listen caused me to write it all of as overblown noise and terrible vocals. Going into this album, I played it casually on a set of speakers while doing housework and really just found it mediocre and at many points fatiguing to listen to. However, giving this album a listen with headphones for the 2nd time was one of the most impressive experiences I have had with music to date. To start, the performances on this album are, with no bit of sarcasm whatsoever, perfect. I might not personally always love or be in the mood for some of the melodies here, but there isn't a single time where the song feels held back by the instrumentation and there are so many moments throughout the record where the playing is so next level it's hard for me to visualize how it was even recorded. The production also is killer, with all of the instruments feeling really well placed in the mix and the tightness of the guitar riffs and drumming really shine through in the recording. The whole record flows incredibly well, balancing the heavier songs with more accessible songwriting and I think the overall theming of the record is incredibly well done, comparing god and religion to some sort of puppet mastery in the title track and going on to call Jesus a "Lepper Messiah" in the track of the same name. The title track is easily one of the best of the album, with this really cool dropped beat at the end of every 4th measure and the solo at the end expertly implements their guitarwork into this really awkward time signature. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is also a fantastic track, with a great building atmosphere and some sonic aesthetics that I would never expect from Metallica, but holy cow do they just rock the shit out of this entire track. The soloing is always a highlight on all of these tracks but the ones in this track are particularly amazing. Orion is truly a perfect track in my opinion. The band really just lets loose and travels through so many different sonic landscapes, many of which involve some of the craziest guitarwork I have ever heard. Damage Inc. is an incredible closer to the album, with not only a great intro, but an insanely fast chugging groove as the track gets going and a really cool vocal delivery when whispering, "Damage Incorporated." The instrumental break at the end has some of the fastest guitar riffs I have heard and barely sound possible. It's a really chaotic and exciting way to end the album and although I don't love the way it ends off rhythmically, it is still a fantastic finisher. Overall, this album blew every expectation I had of it out of the water and has introduced me to the world of heavy metal in one of the best ways imaginable. There are a very small amount of moments where the heavier tone of the album gets a bit much for me, but when I really put myself in the mindset to listen to Metal music, it really gets easier to see how few and far between those moments really are. Give this album a listen if you have ever wanted to get into heavier music and have been waiting for an entry point that's worth it. Highlights: Battery, Master Of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Leper Messiah, Orion, Damage Inc. Score: 8.5/10 Exceeded every expectation for metal music I had

This is my first time listening to Metallica! Their sound encompasses a range of metal subgenres and they switch back and forth between them making this a wild ride! I definitely hear the heavy metal drama of Sabbath. Then they get into more dark and thrashy sounds that I typically associate with metal. And the guitar solos! Some real melt your face shit! There’s even some psychedelic vibes on “Orion.” I dig the anti-war lyrics too. The album cover says a lot and songs like “Disposable Heroes” are really powerful. Highlights: “Battery,” “Master of Puppets,” “Disposable Heroes,” “Orion”

I was starting to think after around ~50 albums rated that the genre of metal was being forgotten about as I think we’ve only gotten a single other one so far (Black Sabbath). Thankful to be proven wrong here with MOP >:O >:O This album has so many definable characteristics. It is DYNAMIC in its instrumentation. The first thing you hear is Battery, with acoustic guitars that start to increase in harmonic complexity, adding harmony on top of harmony... until you get hit at 39 seconds in, and are given an EPIC soundstage on your ears. then at 1 minute in you get the ENERGY OF THE RIFFFFFFFFFFF >:O >:O And then you are set on a crash course where it’s hard to take a breath without hitting the pause button. I genuinely love this album and I think it's a masterpiece in not only the genre but in music as a whole. Metallica gets an interesting response these days from metal people as they are seen as generic compared to the breadth that the genre has expanded into, but their music is classic songwriting genius- track after track after track. Master of Puppets might be their magnum opus and is in the running for the magnum opus of the genre of metal. It is so dynamic, energetic, surprisingly approachable, monumental, and even catchy. After one listen through you will have parts that you remember. You will remember guitar parts that sound like a cat scratch or tires screeching on a road. You will remember vocal parts! That is so incredibly hard to do in metal, as most metal vocal parts are rhythmic and devoid of melodic qualities or obvious pitches. Somehow my biggest takeaway from this album has always been trying to figure out how a metal band from 1986 has the tracks Orion and Master of Puppets on one album. Both have so many emotions and standout variables for me- with distorted guitar chugfest sections, with soaring guitar solos that are still tasteful, fun offset rhythmic groovy parts (Orion at 2:12 specifically), and yet they are somehow introspective, contemplative, and still unrelenting and epic. This album was released March 1986 and only 6 months later the bus accident occurred where bassist Cliff Burton died at the age of 24. The section in Orion that starts at around the 4 minute mark is one that I’ve always shown to naysayers of the metal genre as an unquestionably brilliant testament that the genre can produce genius level music composition. That section starts with an emotional Burton bass line, that evolves into Bach-like lines at around the 5:40 mark (seriously listen to the bass at 6:00 - with headphones it is breathtaking) and then further evolves into more emotional playing – 6:33 the bass re-enters with distortion with Burton’s infamous no-plectrum technique and then syncs up with the lead guitars. Unquestionable. I’m always a little sad when I hear Orion because of this (and there’s the slightest hint of some chopped onions here as I write this on a Monday morning at 9:39am) but it usually doesn’t take long for me to remember how that song and this album are timeless and will be listened to forever. Easy 5/5 for me and possibly a 6/5.

Full points to Metallica for carrying on after the death of Cliff Burton, cos we would've lost some great music had they chosen not to continue at that point, but this would've been a tremendous note to bow out on if it had come to that. This is them at an early peak.

Oh god, do I have to...?

What do you get when the Swedish Chef cooks spaghetti? Pasta of Muppets. Hetfield, the ever-faster poet, pumps out the lyrics but I think it’s not quite on the same tier of some of their other albums.

I see the impact and significance of this album but I couldn't really get into it. Did like Master Of Puppets and the instrumental though.

Yeah yeah yeah, you can play really fast and stuff. I remember hearing this in middle school and being kind of scared of it. 20 years later, it just sounds silly and annoying and I want it to stop.

Here's my track by track analysis: 1) Definitely doesn't start off how I would have expected, but ultimately "Battery" ends up sounding like a bizarre Duracell commercial. 2) The weird time signature on "Master of Puppets" feels awkward and now I'm agitated. Perhaps that was the intended effect. 3) Did he really just say "death may die" on "The thing that should not be"? Sounds like the soundtrack to a mountain dew fueled dungeons and dragons session. 4) "Welcome Home" kinda sounds like proto grunge during the first half of the song (before they get into the thrashing and soloing). I'm sure the guys in Alice in Chains were listening to this. 5) "Disposable Heroes" is perhaps my favorite track. More straightforward but intense and kind of fun in a way that the other tracks aren't. Almost has a punk energy to it. Kinda reminds me of The Misfits. 6) I think "Leper Messiah" is the blandest track on the album. That double kick pedal really massages the eardrums though. 7) Instrumental metal can work really well! You can showcase more interesting musical structures and techniques without the distraction of the often over-the-top lyrics and/or grating vocal styles common to the genre. Not to say Metallica are guilty of those things, but it's a nice sort of intermission. "Orion" is definitely kinda proggy, but that's not a mark against it in my book. 8) I like the intro to "Damage, Inc." Kinda wish this track was swapped with "Battery" and this track would open the album and "Battery" would close it. This song would be such an intense way to open the album and you could drop F bombs on everyone right off the bat.

"MASTER. MASTER." is what I think every time I see this album title. This era of Metallic is just ok for me. Master of Puppets is fun though. I bet if this album was mixed in not such a mid-heavy way I could get more into it, it just feels a bit flat compared to modern metal mixes.

It's textbook Metallica; massive energy, driving riffs, incredible harmonics, powerful drums, interesting and gritty to it's core. An album of classic tracks with Welcome Home, Battery and Master of Puppets. It's a solid album, maybe not their best album, but it's certainly Metallica being Metallica.

They shout Master, but it must be short for masturbate. Music for a thirteen year old that all of a sudden realises that all the girl in the class have breasts

I prefer the more melodic slow parts as opposed to the crunchy fast strum parts but it’s still a classic. Master of Puppets the song is a masterpiece

4/5. Best when played loud! Metallica is one of the few metal bands that I like. These guys are awesome - glad I got a chance to see them in concert. This album is "before my time" and I only listened to it after some of their more mainstream albums came out. Master of Puppets, is definitely in the same realm as those others are. Standouts: Master of Puppets. The rest are really good too!

Is this the greatest heavy metal album ever? Maybe, but I'm not a HM guy at all so I'm not the one to judge. I will say that I preerred the Iron Maiden album as well as both Black Sabbath albums (especially 4) to this album. It's true that the musicianship is quite impressive exspecially the drumming but as far as guitar virtuosity, there's very little else that impresses me less. But I understand the quality of this album..just not for me. 3 stars

I had this pegged as the metal connoisseur's Metallica album of choice, whereas I'm more of a casual Black Album / 'greatest hits' kinda guy. I enjoyed this more than expected though; I thought it'd be mostly thrashy stuff but there's plenty of variety. Orion is a great case in point. A strong 3.5 from me.

Few albums did more to change the path of music, metal specifically, than this one. Amazingly one of the others was Black. Amazing.

I’m not super into thrash metal, and some of the songs go on a little long, but there are some super interesting ideas and dynamic shifts that took me by surprise. Prime example was the middle section in “Master of Puppets”, just really compelling and epic guitar moves.

This is again a tragic case of personal bias. I like this album. I really, really like this album. The progression of Master of Puppets into The Thing That Should Not Be into Welcome Home is fantastic, bespoke song placemets. However. I'm simply not a fan of prolonged, repetetive instrumental sequences. They're good, they're impressive, they're just not my thing. Still, anything below 4/5 would be a robbery, in my book.

I'm in two minds here. On the one hand "Master Of Puppets" must have been a huge thing when it came out and definitely sounded fresh. The song "Master Of Puppets" is widely considered one of the best pieces of music in history (a well deserved title). But on the other hand I can't help myself from comparing it to later trash metal albums, and it pales in comparison. Apart from legendary "Master Of Puppets" and "Orion" I don't think there was much more standing out. Nevertheless, I consider it a classic.

Klasycznie - z perspektywy czasu Metallica plasuje się gdzieś pomiędzy hard rockiem, a metalem - im dalej w las, tym lżejsze brzmienie albumów. W przypadku Master of Puppets mamy przydługie, niezbyt ciężkie kawałki, z których losowy, 20 sekundowy wycinek mógłby być wycinkiem dowolnego innego utworu. Mimo, że każdy z nich jako część większej składanki miałby rację bytu, cały album jest przytłaczający i lekko... przynudza? Nawet jeśli w tamtych czasach taka perkusja czy riffy gitarowe były czymś nowym, z perspektywy czasu ogromna liczba zespołów robi to po prostu lepiej. Paradoksalnie najbardziej podobało mi się najwolniejsze Welcome Home (Sanitarium), co moim zdaniem dobrze podsumowuje ten album.

Na pewno ten album był wielkim poruszeniem w momencie wydania, jednak po tylu latach i dla człowieka, który nigdy specjalnie się trash metalem nie interesował większym zaskoczeniem niż znane Battery i tytułowe Master of puppets był na przykład instrumentalny Orion. Ogólnie jak na Mettalice wydaje się dość stonowany cały album. 3.5/5

Monotonne i brzmiące tak samo 1h albumu. Intensywniejsze gitarowe czy perkusyjne fragmenty nie są moim zdaniem niczym wybitnym, a większość albumu brzmi tak samo i moim zdaniem nudno, przez co we wielu miejscach miałem ochotę na zmianę utworu, po czym kolejny brzmiał tak samo i tak w kółko.

Najtrudniejsza ocena dotychczas. Z jednej strony jako zagorzały słuchacz metalu od dawien dawna, nie przepadam za Metallicą i uważam, że mało jaki zespół jest tak overrated. Obudzony w środku nocy wymieniłbym 100 subiektywnie przyjemniejszych zespołów metalowych. Nie jest ona w top 5 zespołów na M, nawet nie wiem czy jest najlepszym zespołem na "Me", bo istnieją Meshuggah i Megadeth i choć nie jestem jakimś die-hard fanem obu, to zdecydowanie wolę odpalić je niż Metallicę. Z drugiej strony, "Master of Puppets" należy jeszcze do tych lepszych albumów, zanim się skomercjalizowali. No i Metallica to pewien entry point do metalu i zespół popularyzujący gatunek od zawsze, więc za to im chwała. Album jako całości słucha się w miarę przyjemnie, jak na Metallicę, pozycja tego krążka jako klasyki thresha jest niepodważalna. Wiele o zawartości nie trzeba mówić, jaki MoP jest każdy widzi. Nie zgodzę się absolutnie z tezami, że to najlepsze co metal spotkało, że są w czymkolwiek najlepsi (technicznie, lirycznie, brzmieniowo, wokalnie), że są wyjątkowi, że w dzisiejszych czasach nie ma takiej muzyki - akurat metal rozwija się zajebiście i od "Master of Puppets" do dnia dzisiejszego pojawiło się mnóstwo zajebistych i unikalnych zespołów, albumów, podgatunków etc. I zapewne pojawiać się będzie. Dlaczego 3/5? Dałbym takie 2.5, a że nie mogę, to daję 3, ponieważ: 1) Zapewne nie będzie w tym zestawieniu dużo metalu, a ten co będzie, będzie popowy lub heavy metalowym klasykiem, powtarzanym w radiach do znudzenia 2) Zapewne będzie więcej albumów Metallici, w tym niestety te nowsze, więc trzeba mieć skalę - nie wszystkie nowe albumy zasługują na 1 3) Bo mimo wszystko biorąc pod uwagę, że zapewne zarzucą nas jeszcze 2 albumami Cohena, kilkoma albumami Beatlesów itp., miło posłuchać jakiegoś metalu :P Ale jeśli to byłby challenge typu 1001 best metal albums, dałbym 2/5. Bo naprawdę mamy 2022.

One of the most iconic metal albums. It's fast, aggressive, and here to make an impact. "Battery" opens with soft classical acoustic guitar before bursting into energy that carries all the way through the album.

Thought I would like this more but really wasn’t feeling it. Feels like a half step away from those mid-2000s cock rock bands.

What a surprisingly fun album. A couple of monster hits followed by some really solid metal. It even manages to avoid most of the cheesiness of some of the OTHER early metal bands (I'm looking at you Megadeath). Nothing to hate here and a lot to love.

Every time I listen to this I think what Metallica would've been if Cliff Burton hadn't died in a bus accident. || Favorite tracks: Orion and Damage Inc. Bass on Orion in particular goes hard.

One of those albums that sounds generic now because it was so groundbreaking that it got imitated for 20 years. Metallica are douchebags but this album is still a classic.

Quite frankly the best entry point to Metallica and their music. What more can be said about this excellent display of riffage, sheer tenacity, brute force and one of the four pillars of thrash metal being at their early, hungry best? A must listen for anyone who either love and hate Metallica and understand what they mean to not only the genre of metal but music as a whole. Excellent.

This is a tough one for me, not a fan of Metallica or Metal at all but I can see how this is a classic for listeners who love metal. Not much more to say on this one. Favorite song: Orion. 2.5 based on its place in metal alone.

This album has a little bit of everything, intricate solos at high speed, thrash-metal drumming and inventive prog-riffs. Not my cup of tea, but definitely a complete album.

🤘🤘🤘 Buzzsaw guitars, ominous howls, breakneck drumming, odd time signatures. This record is certainly a mood and a half. Easily the best metal record we've gotten so far -- it's hard for me to know whether this a genre I'll ever meaningfully connect with. And to be honest, the runtime got a little long for me on this one. There's a few tracks that stood out for me, but the overall impact was a little blunted by the length. It's surprisingly proggy. The musicianship and vision are really vivid, which I can appreciate. I feel like it's one of those things of trying to judge an album on the merits of what it seeks to accomplish. And on that count, I can't find any fault with this album. It's not really my taste, but it definitely deserves a place on this list. There's something about it that feels essential. It's also striking to me how diverse the inclusions from the 1980s are here. You can really see the blueprint for all the subgenres still going until this day across these different releases. This album is technically adept in a way that's genuinely quite astonishing. This album is boring AF. The lyrics are rather cringey, with frequent suggestions that the listener should obey their master. Whatever, my guy. If you have to tell me, you've lost. Sorry dude. The relentlessly aggressive guitar becomes tiring really quickly, despite the play being adept it fatigues the listener.

Masterpiece

Although I'm not overly familiar with their entire catalog, I do like this band whenever I hear their music. It's more thrashy and frenetic than the music to which I typically listen, but I love the energy and I think James Hetfield's sense of melody is fantastic. I also always admire the bands' musicianship, especially Hetfield's guitar playing (Kirk Hammett is a superbly talented guitarist in his own right; I think the reason my ear bends towards Hetfield is aesthetically I'm not that into shredding). After a while, the constant driving and often staccato style of this album start to blur together for me, and even grates on me a bit, but it's overall quite good.

Enjoyed that more than I expected. “Speed Metal” comes alive. 3.5/5

Everything was slower than I expected. I thought this was speed metal. I think I would have really enjoyed this album if you could hear the bass on anything other than Orion.

Metallica is the only metal band universally liked even among non-metal fans for a reason. They maintain a heavy sound without compromising the beautiful melodies or meaningful lyrics.

First of all, I’m not the biggest fan of metal. It’s not something I listened to growing up but as my palate expands I’m giving it another go. Having said that, I loved this album. It was cohesive, cinematic, and the musicianship was incredible. James Hetfield’s vocal delivery is supercharged and clear, Cliff Burton’s baselines are acrobatic and driving, Lars Ulrich’s drumming is precise and full of momentum, and Kirk Hammett’s lead guitar is melodic and virtuosic without being muddy. This album is cohesive and exciting despite its 54 minute running time.

I'm not a metal fan. It is difficult for me to listen to this album, not saying that it is bad, but I like punk rock.

One of my all-time favorite albums. The last great thrash album by Metallica. What other band plays music in 21/32 time signature at 200+ bpm? It's insane how clean Kirk and James' guitars are here. And most likely Lars' best drum work. This is a masterpiece of thrash metal and likely the very definition of it. I actually like James' later mature voice rather than his earlier voice, but the higher pitched/younger voice still fits well. My only criticism is the mixing could be better as I really wish I could hear Cliff's bass work more, but with decent headphones, you can hear it. But it's drowned out with speakers, which is sad. But not enough to not make it an instant 5 star album. Every song is memorable. RIP Cliff.

The five stars I wanted to give ...And Justice for All but couldn't. Might have something to say for listening to albums in order of release in cases where bands have more than entry in the book. This is the Metallica I expected and loved but I think I'm now far better equipped to dive back into Justice with this context behind me. What a massive fucking album though flipping heck.

Perhaps a little too metaphor driven, but a masterpiece nonetheless. I will suggest that it's a pretty standard formula of "angry verse, crunchy guitar, angry verse, witty chorus, squeely guitar, crunchy guitar angry verse, backed with aggressive bass and drum." I love this album, and it defined a genre, even if the formula exhausted itself. Callouts to Orion, Welcome Home, and Battery.

I'm not typically a thrash metal fan, but I did enjoy this more than I expected. Some of the songs dragged on a bit too long though.

I don't think I've ever heard the full-length version of the title track, so I was pleasantly surprised to find ~3 more minutes of head-banging goodness on top of what I already knew. It's that relentless energy that makes this album listenable; maybe I'm using the wrong speakers/'phones, but this thing absolutely drowns in mids that tend to wash out the bass and drums. Burton's lines deserve to be heard, damn it!

Every bit as awful as expected. My resolve to listen to all of whatever turns up & give everything a fair crack of the whip has certainly been tested to the full by this album.

Metallica's best album, 4 to 5 stars, classic thrash metal from the late 80's

Disclaimer: This album requires several focused listenings to appreciate. I'd like it more, the more I listen. This album is embarrassed in the company of genuinely great Metallica like the Black Album. Musicianship and lyricism appear at several points, but much of the middle of this album is simply aggression, without substance to back it up. The album sets the tone early, with Battery, an impressive song, but also a good case study in the difference between technically impressive music and good music. Orion would have been a good conclusion for the album. It's a good song on its own, and it also returns to the theme of Battery. Every guitar solo on this album is worth hearing, in context, so you should listen all the way through, if only to appreciate the guitar solos. This album would be much better if Destruction Inc. were dropped from the lineup.

I can't even give this an honest review. It was one of the first albums I ever owned (about 30 years ago now), I've listened to it more times than I've had hot dinners, I've learnt the whole thing on guitar, I know every single song inside and out. It's legit the epitome of heavy metal, even of rock music in general. 5/5.

Arguably Metallica's best album in my memory, but when I listened to it today, I did not enjoy it as much. The first tracks, and especially the title song, are brilliant, but about halfway in I got a little bored with the sound, especially the wild guitar solos, which nowadays sound quite old-fashioned.

Metallica have been in my musical DNA from a very early age, thanks to my older brother. I fell in love with them hard, myself, when I was about 20. They were my gateway into metal and for the longest time they were my all time favourite band. They have since been surpassed by Coheed and Cambria, but Master of Puppets remains a top tier Metallica album for me, as well as being one of the greatest representations of metal at it's finest. I love all the songs here, with the exception of Leper Messiah. That song leaves a bit to be desired but every other song is a banger. They've all been reviewed a million times but the longer songs Orion, and the title track are the best for my money. Not to say the others are slouches. Battery may be the single greatest metal opener, alongside Angel of Death and Clenching the Fists of Dissent. My first live experience watching Metallica was Download Festival 2006. It was the 20 year anniversary of this album and they played it in it's entirety and I kid you not when I sat I had an out of body experience! I there my whole being, body and soul into that show and was lucky to make it out alive! Perfection, or close enough.

A brutal and athletic barrage of metal from the single most distinctive sounding metal band ever. Not a huge fan but I can appreciate the artistry here.

I never got deep into Metallica, and I'm past the age where thrash would be casual listening, but this is a really good album. Really, really good.

THE perfect metal album. To be fair, I am already a really big Metallica fan that has seen them live and enjoys pretty much everything they have released outside of most songs on Load, Reload, and St. Anger. While I would personally take Ride the Lightning or AJFA over Master of Puppets, I cannot deny that this is the masterpiece that made them legends today. The vocals, guitar, bass, and drums are all as strong as can be within the metal genre, but the songwriting and composition make this album insanely hard to beat. I feel that Cliff Burton played a huge part in making this album what it is, and you can tell that this was easily their most mature and sophisticated album up to that point (most would argue they never reached these heights again, but I feel AJFA has amazing moments that prove them wrong). Every song structure here is crafted so tightly that it makes the whole album feel cohesive but unique with a mix of lightning fast and slow paced songs: for every insane track like Damage Inc., you have a somber track like The Thing That Should Not Be that creates a great pace throughout the listening experience. I feel that there is not a dud on this entire record and that every single track has a unique element that makes it stand out from the rest. If I had to choose particular songs, I would say Disposable Heroes and Master of Puppets are my favorites. The anti-war message of the album is most strong through these tracks, but the entirety of the record features pounding aggression and softer moments that really let the lyrics and emotion stand out. This is one of the only hard rock albums I can think of where the songs would work just as well as orchestral versions, especially the instrumental track Orion. For that reason alone, I would say that this album is amazing, but having that aspect combined with top notch performance from every single member makes this flawless. 5/5.

Arguably Metallica's magnum opus. An amazing, inventive, and powerful set of prog-infused thrash metal tracks, full of tasty riffs and fun solos.

What we are talking about here is in my opinion one of the most famous metal albums of all time, and for good reason. Diverse sounds, with all the stuff that is good about thrash at one point or another. Not even my favorite Metallica album, but their most prominent early one by far.

Master of Puppets is universally considered a masterpiece, and it's easy to see why. James Hetfield's rhythm guitar playing is technically flawless, executing intricate, rhythmically complex, lightning quick parts adroitly, but always with a human feel. His vocal performance is aggressive, but the farthest thing from sloppy. Cliff Burton matches Hetfield on bass, step by step. Drummer Lars Ulrich isn't as subtle or as tasteful as Hetfield and Burton, but he does fine. Kirk Hammet's leads are impeccable, although I personally would prefer that he take more chances harmonically, given Metallica's obvious ambition. These are complex, tightly written songs with a wide stylistic range--within metal, of course. And the lyrics match, ruminating intelligently on various aspects of the misuse of power. The band is blessed with crystal clear production from Flemming Rasmussen that allows you to luxuriate in every last note, and which neatly sidesteps all the worst aspects of 80s production. There is literally nothing to complain about on Master of Puppets at all. Why then does it leave me cold? I really don't understand. Still, on a purely intellectual basis, it's obvious that Master of Puppets (which I'm told is largely a consolidation of previous album Ride the Lightning's innovations) pushed metal into new levels of complexity and virtuosity. It obviously influenced virtually every metal and thrash album that came after it. It richly deserves its inclusion on the 1001 list. Which leads me to a conundrum. How do I rate Master of Puppets 5/5 when I didn't even really enjoy it? Here's my non-solution: I'm not going to rate it at all.

I can't say that I've ever been a fan of the members of Metallica as people, but goddamn their early work is just stellar. Intense and loud while still remaining incredibly melodic and intricate, this may be their best album. I just wish that they could have gone the Slayer route more and just stick to their metal roots rather than following the course of popular rock 'n roll. At their peak, Metallica may have been the greatest metal band of all time, bar none. 4/5 (but very close to 5)

Ik vind die docu waarbij de bandleden elkaar verrot schelden in het bijzijn van een therapeut wel erg vermakelijk. Stukken vermakelijker dan dit soort vroegere Metallica albums. Die metal-drums: kut. Die niet geloofwaardige 'stoere' vocals: kut. Kale 80's productie: kut. cliché metal riffjes: kut. De titel van het derde nummer vat het eigenlijk wel goed samen: The Thing That Should Not Be.

Why is it that I liked this album so much? What made it so listenable? This isn’t usually “my” genre. But I enjoyed the rhythm of it, and it made me move the whole time. I liked the use of lyrics as sound. I liked the lyrics as a message. I liked the vocals—hard but not ugly. I liked the guitars and percussion—so much hard energy but always rhythmic and musical. I can’t fully explain the difference with other albums, I just liked this one. I would play it again. Phrases I will steal: “the thing that should not be,” and “bow to leper messiah!” The title track really, really swings I think. And “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” will be a good drive-to-work anthem.

I admire their speed and their power and their talent. These guys can play. But other than the title track (which is great), there's not much on this album that makes me want to listen again. Similar to how the Ramones made me feel, I can see why other folks like them but they're just not for me right now. I think maybe they're good for adolescent dudes who are mad at their math teacher and I can't not take that personally today.

I’ve never listened to a Metallica album before. Certainly aware of this album, but looking at the track listing don’t recognize a single song. ”Battery” surprised me from the git-go. I had not expected soft guitar. Nice of them to ease me into the water a bit. Once in I’m finding the water a tad too hot for me. Excellent playing, although The Poseidon Adventure comes to mind: “I can’t take this. Give me a Strauss waltz.” “Master of Puppets”… maybe going down a little easier. Like the previous song, there’s a break in the middle for the unexpectedly calm and pretty guitar solo. Is this a thing in their music? Give you a little palette cleanser before the second half of the song? I’m enjoying this middle section. I see why these guys are legendary musicians. That middle part almost had me liking the song. “The Thing That Should Not Be” is plenty dark. There’s that grinding guitar. How long is this song? “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” thankfully is taking things down a notch. Still not connecting. Halfway through. Must…press… on… “Disposable Heros” - the music is well-suited to the topic of war. Neither is pleasant. Maybe all war songs should sound like this. And like war, really anxious for this to be over. “Leper Messiah” is my favorite song so far. These songs are long though aren’t they? I wasn’t expecting an instrumental, but here’s “Orion”. It’s better than I expected. The soft interlude is quite nice. This is my favorite song on this album. I’d like to hear a symphonic arrangement of this. “Damage, Inc.” has lyrics that fit the music very well. I made it through a listen from beginning to end… not unhappy for the experience. I appreciate the skill of the performers, but struggled to find any connection to this music. I’m afraid I’m just not dressed for this party.

Good but I get a bit tired of it. Needs to be shuffled into other music.

Sounds like I should buy it used. Saw this your live in 1986, band was right but it just didn’t have the passion. Now I hear that on the studio recording too.

I'm not a metal guy but I didn't hate this album Has some punk elements. Very heavy in the tradition of Black Sabbath which is a good thing. I actually liked most of the songs. 3.5 🌟

This is not the kind of Heavy Metal that I like. It was ok, just not for me

I’ve never enjoyed Hetfield’s vocals, and most of this is too thrashy for my tastes, but Orion is so good!

It's fine. There are some good riffs here and there but overall it's not for me. It gets quite tiring to listen to this almost hour long album. I get that is what appeals to fans of the genre but not to me.

This was my first real metal album - had it on tape - and I think still holds up. Battery is just a great opener and I don't think the rest of the songs every let me down. Sanitarium is also that mix of heavy and ridiculous that I just love.

A classic

Hearing some early Metallica with Cliff Burton was interesting, but I don't see listening to this music by my own choice. The title track verged on being okay. There is enough "meedly-meedly-mee" from Kirk Hammett to keep Strong Bad happy. The "chug-chug-chug" that drives extended sections of most (¿all?) tracks wears out my patience. Metallica is not for me.

the same kind of aggressive voice as the sex pistols, but this time not really endearing its just annoying. i feel like theres just too much going on and it takes away from anything good. literally so repetitive its actually hurting my ears. i honestly dont think its good at all its really really bad, i cant finish it. no tune or anything remotely pleasant to listen to. shit basically i hate it

Good album. Its no wonder they where so big back then. I've grown up on modern metal, but you can really appreciate their music. Will listen to again

Super fast, super powerful, with killer songwriting. Battery is a hell of an opener, and MoP is an all time classic track. Spectacular from beginning to end.

For what it is, it is quite enjoyable. Areas seem very dated now, especially the vocals and guitar solos. Wasn't into this when I was younger, and I wouldn't pick it out to listen to again, but I can see the appeal.

If you'd have asked me even 10 years ago I would have given this an enthusiastic 5 and gushed about it being an enormously influential classic of the genre, which is still is. I'm not in the same place, so I don't enjoy them as much now, but it's still a great album

Loud and fun but the songs really run together and get exhausting.

Great album with no bad songs. Battery, MOP, Sanatarium. Excellent guitar, drums and vocals throughout. Substantive, thoughtful lyrics yelled at you until you get it.

First time listening: 7/8 albums liked. Solid rock album. I love songs exceeding 4 minutes to be honest, but ironically the 8 minute one was kind of odd to my tastes. Other than that, very tame music for metal, but great nonetheless! One song saved
