really liked it

I wasn't overly familiar with the whole record here, but wasn't disappointed. It's got that 'thin' 80s production which I kind of dig. I don't think there's a duff track in the house. Favourite tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Leper Messiah.

🤘🏽🫨🤘🏽

I could've rated this without listening, but why would I skip such a banger anyway

Legendary album, so good that soviet union went crazy over it.

I see there's two more Metallica albums that I've still got to catch up on and if they are anything like this then I think I might be a fan. This album is just epically good from start to finish. Faves: hard to say, maybe Orion :)

An easy 5 from me. Metallica's black album, heard at a friend's house, is what prompted me to start actively assembling my own music collection rather than relying on whatever the tv and radio served up to me. "Master of Puppets" is the first album I ever bought on CD. 🤘 Fave tracks - literally all of them, I reckon. On this playthough, "The Thing That Should Not Be" let's say. One of best Lovecraftian metal songs, and that's a pretty crowded field!

you know I’ve already listened to it 🤘

their best album, second only to …And Justice for All

I love this album! Might be peak Metallica for me. Not a single weak song amongst the bunch.

so good

Just a classic album.

eet fuk

What’s to say. Great album

Metallica's Master of Puppets album artwork is a stunning visual masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the themes of manipulation and control found in the music. It's striking imagery serves as a powerful metaphor for addiction and loss of autonomy, compelling viewers to reflect on its deeper meanings. The rich colors and dramatic contrast enhance its emotional impact, making it not just an album cover but a significant piece of art. Overall, the artwork deserves a 5-star rating for its creativity, depth, and lasting influence in heavy metal culture. Album artworks rated: 1/1001 The music is great, too.

240/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

bangers fra start til slut

When I was 12 bought the new Metallica cassette bc my older cousin raved about how awesome they were. Fuel was pretty great but the rest of the album was kinda bad. I wish he just made me tapes of all their 80’s albums so I would have figured it out sooner. Master of Puppets is an all timer, it’s relentless from the get go and I got no issues with it. 5 stars

I mean its master of puppets this is THE Metallica album. It was great, fuck Lars. 10/10

Another Metallica classic on this list. Out of their albums prior to the Black album, this is definitely my favorite among them. The album is only 8 tracks deep, yet spans almost an hour in length. There isn’t a bad song on this album, and even saying that, Orion is probably the best track of the eight in my opinion.

Third Metallica album on my list, and certainly my preferred one so far. Songs here are right on the edge of length and intensity, striking a balance that makes it a great listen from start to finish.

Wonderful album, perfection

Kicks total grinding ass every single second. Utter mastery.

MASTER OF PUPPETS! Probably one of the only metal albums im gonna like hahaha whoops Best song: Master of Puppets

The band’s masterpiece, a statement that forever change metal music and really rock.

It was a 5/5 years ago when I first listened to it but now years have passed, my tastes have changed... So would I still give this a 5? Absolutely. What an album.

Shit spanks

9.8/10 - as close to a masterpiece as any album I've ever heard. This one is packed from start to finish, showcasing technical thrash metal (Battery, MoP, Disposable Heroes), to darker, heavier metal (TTTSNB, Leper Messiah) to ballads/instrumental (Fade to Black, Orion), and closing out with Damage Inc., which feels like a good mix of all of the above. Every rock fan should listen to this album in its entirety at least once in their life.

MASTER

Fantastic album. First Metallica album i ever listened to back when i was in high school.

This album turned Metallica from a band playing hard and fast, to a band playing hard and fast with purpose and meaning. To go from Ride the Lightening (previous release) on an independent label, to this absolute monster of a mainstream release is revolutionary. Easy to place in my top 5 Metallica albums, a lot harder to work out where it fits in the top 3, but such an important and aggressive album. Craftsmanship on their instruments and the lyrical maturity for guys in their 20s is rare occurrence. It’s interesting how Slayer brought out Reign in Blood the same year, playing hard and fast but singing about hell. Metallica do exactly the same and explore the idea of hell on earth. A dark undertone of the events that follow in the bands career make this way more hostile and volatile than just metal heads singing about war.

My forearms ache just listening to the sheer amount of thrashing. Thoroughly enjoyed this album, I've never listened to it in full. I got RSI from bobbing my head so much, it's energetic, it's heavy, proper filthy riffs and fun solos. That's metal baby. Of course Master of Puppets is the big hit here but my favoirite song was Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and absolutely loved Orion, instrumental was a nice break before smashing the ending. Play it loud.

Круто. Именно этот альбом мне понравился

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR (vegan) Artwork: 🫱🧵🪦🪦🪦🧵🫲 Produktion (2017 Remaster): 😲🙂👌 Musik: 💯❤️‍🔥🤘 Wertung: 🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦/5

Un p'tit classique là. J'avais jamais écoutées l'album avant. J'ai eu du bon boum boum boum sur le chemin vers mon examen

Definitely the quintessential thrash metal record. I think I prefer Ride the Lightning but for Battery/Master of Puppets alone this gets 4 stars. Damage Inc, Orion are also pretty solid.

Love it so much.

Every track on this is a joy. Sanitarium and Disposable Heroes are my favorites, but I like them all.

verry good

5 Stars

Really didn’t expect this to be a 4.5 star (that I’ll round up) album, I can’t really fault it! Despite seeing Metallica for the legendary double headline set at Download 2023, and listening to hours of podcasts about the band’s career, I really hadn’t listened to much of their stuff before, and definitely hadn’t listened to an entire album of theirs from start to finish. Much more enjoyable than I was expecting!

At last! Something totally in my spectrum! Perfect doesn't begin to describe it! Amazing, superb, delightful, gorgeous, just a few adjectives for a record that was so influential for generations of metal heads to come. Battery opens like a raging bull heading straight for your gut and just goes through it without even a "how do you do" Master is just a damn jewel nothing wrong with it it's just perfection incarnate The thing that should not be it's dark, sluggish, heavy and it feels like you're drowning in a black sea while 2 giant red eyes just stare at you as you go down Welcome home hs an amazing solo that just speaks to your soul, it's strong and overwhelming Disposable heroes was the prelude for what One would become, an anti war anthem depicting the hopelessness of empty conflicts. Some would say it's too long, I say it's the correct length for the message to be spread. Lepper messiah is just amazing climbs up like a bitch and you don't even realize what's happening Orion, is just as beautiful today as it was the first time I heard it, Cliff's essence is just quintessential in this track, his solo resounds in your bones and takes you to places you've long forgotten, when life was simpler Damage Inc., it just closes with a bang, leaving you speechless and wondering what just hit you... Yeah I'm a metallica fanboy, I've been that for 30 years now and I will be un till the day I exhale my last breath

What a great record. I love it!

A classic metal album. Pretty amazing liked Orion, battery, master of puppets, disposable heroes

One of the best albums of all time

Yes yes yes yes yes, I have listened to this, I can play some of it too!

4.5, but feeling generous.

I have a hard time giving this album less than 5 stars. Excellent album front to back. Orion has been my favorite Metallica song for a long time. Almost gave 4/5 stars because of Lars’ lack of creativity but I just couldn’t do it.

Classic metal. Would recommend and listen again.

Hell yeah, it's a 10 for me. From here I can see its influence on today's music, and I can confirm that there are few albums that have influenced so many genres. You can see how it influences much of today's rock, not to mention metal, but it can also influence hip hop (like JPEGMAFIA's latest album). This project has everything you need and lacks nothing you want. The guitar riffs are simply perfect, every single song is perfectly structured, every second this album has is valuable, it knows when to have its quiet moments and it knows when to explode in energy, it is perfectly written to be devastating and it has some of the best vocal performances ever seen. If we talk about Metal albums I think this is a must listen. It is the perfect example of a Metal album. I say it again, it has everything you need. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but this is really one of those albums that I can't complain about in any aspect.

Classic

Excellent metal album. Having coincidentally listened to ride the lighting very recently I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to decide which is my favourite but I don’t think I have to. They’re both monster records and both deserving of 5 whole stars. My favourite tracks are battery, title track, disposable heroes and lepper messiah. I have just listed half the album but I suppose that just shows how good they are.

Probably one of the best albums. Every song is great

The greatest metal album of all time.. Period.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defined thrash metal for years to come. It rocks and it’s my favorite Metallica record because it is so driving and unpredictable. Them in top form, and their unrelenting stature throughout the record keeps me engaged throughout. Too important of a musical experience to not give a 5 lol

I need a Tylenol, head banging in your 30s hurts

iconic

5 classic

Great album

A quintessential metal album. Just focusing on the band for a second, it’s amazing their huge influence on the creation of heavy metal and the fact that they still are so popular within it, adapting to the world of music around them and remaining both a classic band and one for all modern listeners to enjoy. Every member is insanely talented and helped build the genre we know today. Now it’s time for some specifics on this record: it’s easily one of the most recognizable albums in the world of not only metal, but music as a whole. It may not be their debut or magnum opus, but it sure opened the door for many rock listeners to venture into the harsher sound of heavy metal. In addition, Metallica doesn’t just play loud sounds and repeat edgy lyrics. They have method to their madness. Every song sounds like a cohesive piece and more than noises; there’s a story being told. The lyrics can actually be incredibly sentimental and powerfully poignant in a way you wouldn’t expect from such a band. They are everything a metal band should be and remain a constant example for aspiring metal bands even today.

oh god I leapt for joy when I saw Metallica. Pretty sure I own most of their physical albums but oh boy, it's been a short while since i've listened to master of puppets.

Essential metal album with powerful themes and truly heavy instrumentation.

Ride The Lightning, which was my introduction to Metallica will always be my favourite album. But this one's immense.

Perhaps one of the best metal albums of all time. Banger after banger after banger. The easiest 5 I've given yet.

One of Metallica's good albums. Battery is a banger of an opener.

One of the best metal albums ever.

Hard to believe that this masterpiece was released in 1986. Loved it then, and still love it now. 🤘🏻

Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

Yeah it's a metal classic, what else can you say. Performances are flawless, better songwriting than 99% of metal you'll ever hear. I don't listen to metal like I did when i was a teenager anymore, I rarely listen to it at all really, but this album still stands out as something special even after all that time.

Possibly the only metal album that matters. I believe this to also be the most important record of the 1980s.

Master of Speed Metal. Evolved into a more accessible sound but stayed close to their roots. Excellent.

Already listened to it, so why not re-listen? Metallica's breakthrough album. This is THE Metal album! This album is incredible. Arguably their best, and my second favorite (my first being Ride The Lightning) Most of this album is a banger (I also like Leper Messiah, but its not one I revisit a lot) Definitely an album that helped expand my musical horizons. Last album with Cliff Burton (Rest In Peace) Where do I even start? Should I start with how energetic and amazing "Battery" is? With how iconic and amazingly written the title track is? (Fuck you to the elitists who hate on those who discovered the song through Stranger Things, if there are still any today) With how much I overlooked "The Thing That Should Not Be" more than I should have? With how incredible and beautiful is "Welcome Home (Sanatarium)"? With how epic and still relevant "Disposable Heroes" is? With how much of an masterpiece "Orion" is? Cliff is killing it on that bass! This track is HIS! With how haaaard does "Damage, Inc." go? With how iconic, genius and instantly recognized the album cover is? With how relevant some of the themes this album talks about (control and the abuse of power)? I dont know! (sorry for this glaze) but yeah, FUCK YEAH IT IS A MUST HEAR! I encourage you to listen to it, if you havent! Love it -favorite songs: all of them (except Leper Messiah) -least favorite song: Leper Messiah

If I could give 6 stars I would.

As much as I dislike almost everything Metallica did after this, I can't deny that this album is a masterpiece.

A fun excuse to listen to this album again. 5 stars 🤘🏼

There’s probably a lot to laugh at about Metallica, but I can’t help my love for their early albums. Metal for people who don’t love metal. But it rips.

mustard of puppets vill vo dene lieder kenn ich sicher passiv, eifach will min papi früehner scho vill metallica glist het battery findi en riese banger, vom langsamere intro zude schnelle drums, thrashmetal wie es im buche steht (tön wie en boomer) master of puppets isch würkli ih mis hirn ihbrennt MUSTARD MUSTARD oaaah ich han das langsame gitarresolo vergesse bis jz glingts ihne hslt scho sehr guet, 6 minütigi lieder immer spannend z gstalte fuck han ich ih mine jahr vill z fest uf metallica ghated, will die alte metallica actually huere guet sind? ok die art vo soli hani no nie würkli gern gha SANITAAAARIUUUUM DÜTÜÜDÜDÜÜÜ diese banger ich bin eifach en sucker für "ohh ok melodie, ohh chli schneller, ohhhhhhhh zweity layeeer AAAA DOUBLE BASS" ja isch glaub echt mis lieblingslied vo ihne leper messiah iscb voll ok, aber s riff findi sehrsehr geil OAAHH DIE BRIDGE ich wird wiedermal mite wahrheit konfrontiert, dass wenn e tüf gstimmti gitarre funny stuff macht und sie denn e lead drüber mached ich das in 9/10 fäll geil findt orion isch schochli lang gsi aber cool als instrumental JA SCHNELLER SCHNELLER SCHNELLER HIHAT ich bin mite erwartig innegange, dem album es 3 oder maximal 4i z geh ich bin en neue mensch en mensch wo chan zuegeh "hey alts metallica imfall gar nöd so ass"

Orion FTW

Trash Metal gone melodic a classic rock record by Metallica. we'll put together songs that Amp you up.

Nostalgia 5 for sure. This and ride are definitely their best albums. Will I listen to again: 100%

I’m so glad I found this album again during my mature years, as it flew way over my head when it came out. I now get the hype. It’s an album of two halves, the first being the most well-known, containing the monster tracks I’ve been most exposed to. The title track was played night after night by my favourite Filipino covers band at 17 Saloon in Saigon, back when that was my second home. They performed it authentically every single time, and it never got boring. As a younger metal fan, I got into Metallica through one of the Garage Days Revisited albums, which somehow led me to Sanitarium, so I also have a soft spot for that track. Today was the first time I listened to Master of Puppets in its entirety, so Side 2 is brand new to me. Whilst those tracks don’t jump off the platter in the way Side 1 does, they offer an effective mechanism for comprehending the power of Hetfield’s storytelling, creative riffing and musical arrangements. To me, it has become clear that JH is Metallica - the guy is a bona fide artist, with the other three simply play metal’s other three necessary instruments well enough to pass muster. Good album, this!

the band from fortnite This was a turning point for Metallica, where just greatness seen on Ride the Lightning (should have made the list) is turned to legendary status. Killer riffs, bass, drumming, changes. And James actually sounds comfortable on vocals here

A classic. Enough has been said about the self-titled track, but I just want to call to attention how brilliant of a piece Orion is. One of only a few Metallica instrumentals, and simply stunning.

I crashed my car and ran home on pure adrenalin after putting this on. Fuck you, mom and dad!

Simply a classic, one of if not the best thrash metal album of all time. There is not a second on this album that you can't headbang to. This thing is just going hard for the entire runtime but never feels annoying or repetitive.

Love this album!

No question

#266. Metallica really came out swinging with four of the best metal albums out there in a row. All killer, no filler. They didn't really put a foot wrong in the 80s. It's a shame what happened after that, but hey, we can't have it all, right? 5/5: excellent.

First heard in ‘87, still listen to now. Love this album.

Yeah I mean its the best metal album of all time.

One of the most defining metal albums ever made. It’s one of the few metal albums I would recommend to any music lover. It's so relevant, influential, and essential that it's in the Library of Congress!

Some great old school banger music.

Brought metal into the main stream. Metallica at its best

One of their best

Stunning, what an album!!!

one of the best thrash albums ever and one that got me into metal in general

This is a perfect metal record! Not a single bad song on this album! Also the most cohesive album to date by this band. Everybody knows about Master Of Puppets and how great of a song it is, but all of the songs are incredible. Battery is my personal favourite, Orion is one of the most beautiful instrumentals ever, and Damage inc. is just a moshing track. Overall, this is THE metal album!

My fav

Classic. Another No Skips Wednesday.

Not my favourite Metallica album but I think this is their most important, and probably the best of the big thrash albums that came out in 1986. The first side in particular has some of the best songs the genre has to offer.

It's the kind of album that draws teenagers to a love of music, that makes them want to pick up a guitar and learn. I don't listen to it much anymore, but this kind of work is crucial and important in a young individual's musical development. A true classic.

Feels like this has been with me my whole life, nearly has. Every song on this is great and each song has, at one time, been my favourite song on the album. Currently, I’d say Orion is the best track. Easy 5/5 for so many reasons, nostalgia, lyrics, impact, musicianship, masterpiece

So genuinely epic. Feel a bit strange giving this a 5 because it’s probably my third favourite metallica album but man does it go hard. So fun throughout with no dull moments and good variances of sounds and energy levels.

The more Metallica I listen to the more i may just have to admit to myself that they are my favourite band. No music energizes me more than trash metal and I think Metallica is the best at it. This is likely my second favourite album by them but it is always a treat to listen to and I love the classical guitar influences on the album.

Complete banger of an album. I listened to it multiple times yesterday. A true classic. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

I already know this one. A teir.

...loved it. strangely

This sure recharged my Battery

Day 6 of listening to these albums everyday. Master of Puppets is a genuine perfect metal album. With the politically charged lyrics to the 8 minute long track without a single lyric. The album delivers with some of the greatest Metallica has to offer and knocks out with every song. There is not one song you can point at on this album and really say it doesn’t bring that amazing energy.

Classic.

5 stars. No doubt.

One of my all time favorite albums. The sound is truly unique. It’s a beautiful symphony of heavy metal

Takes me back to being a teenager. Fantastic album that finds a good balance between cutting chuggs and melodic, technical riffs. Perhaps not for everyone, but a clear winner for the genre.

The gold standard of thrash metal.

One of my favorite Metallica albums, second to And Justice For All. Finally I'm getting stuff I've listened to before

Best metal album ever

I remember mowing my neighbors' lawns as a teenager, blasting this album on my iPod. Every track hit hard as a kid getting into metal music, and I can comfortably say that sentiment rings true 15-ish years later. Back in the '80s, every member of Metallica brought their A-game. The guitarwork of James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett was impeccable and relentless, the late Cliff Burton's bass compositions came straight out of a classically trained mindset, and even Lars Ulrich's drumming was ferocious for the time. It's a testament to how they constructed a meaningful album with just eight songs. Each track goes through multiple movements that make you feel a wide range of emotions, from the opener "Battery" which eases its way into blistering riffage to the pulse-pounding stomp of "The Thing That Should Not Be", and even the instrumental "Orion" that showcased the song-crafting prowess of one of the best bass players gone too soon. There's a certain magic to Master of Puppets that's hard to replicate, even for Metallica themselves years later. This is worth the listen.

It's great. The production does sound a touch flat at times, but the songs themselves are awesome.

Nije Justice, ali svejedno 10/10

Flawless. I’m not a metal guy but this still sounds so fresh after listening to countless hard rock albums on this list. I can’t even imagine what it must have felt like to listen to this album when it originally came out. It’s so angry but at the same time they manage to include such beautiful melodies. I can’t even pick a favourite track because all of them are amazing and each one brings something else to the table. I still think I slightly prefer Ride the lightning but I totally get why this one is on the list instead.

metal shirt: on, vegetable aisle: slayed. something to groove to, and discovered some bangers that are forgotten compared with the title track but legtimately go hard. amazing album, no notes

not quite a 5 but 4.5+. absolute bangers, this album is on a lot of shirts for a reason

Absolutely legendary. Metallica at their peak, in their prime.

Last album with the great Cliff Burton, Metallica just kept getting better until The Black Album. Not my favorite Metallica album, but a definite heavy metal classic.

It's a hard one to rate. As a teenager I was enamored with this album, I used to learn every song from this album on guitar, I went to many concert just to hear the title song live one more time. Although I can still appreciate it, it's not even close to being enjoyable anymore. Great riffs, amazing solos, but altogether it's just so tiring to listen to. It's great as a relentless, raw and fast paced album, but after some time you just need a brake, which Metallica doesn't provide. I still think it's a 5/5 record, just for the past experiences and for easily being top 3 in the genre all-time, but I probably won't listen to it ever again in its entirety. Blast from a past, but the flash is much more dimmed now.

I think you can safely argue this record is Metallica at their absolute peak. Cliff Burton is still here contributing, Hetfield’s voice has matured into a deeper powerful timbre (which would continue into their next record before I feel he began turning into a parody of himself), Hammett’s leads are melodic and unique as opposed to his earlier chaotic Slayer-style leads (which I love) or his later wah-heavy approach (which I detest), and Lars is cruising holding things down in the back with some of the best percussion production in their discography. While this marks the beginning of when their sound would start to evolve into a style which I feel has influenced some pretty rough subgenres (remember Trivium?) this album is pretty peak. Some of my favorite Metallica tracks are on here (shoutout Disposable Heroes) and even the less memorable second half of the album rips all the way through. Orion stands as Burton’s defining moment as a musician and for good reason. I think every song here is at least pretty solid. I don’t care for Damage Inc as a closer but it’s definitely not bad. Anyway, yeah, 5 stars. I haven’t listen to this album front to back since I was in my teens and I like it even more than I remember. What an accomplishment of an album.

Love it since I was a teen, will never grow old

Battery: 8/10 sounds too poetic for a title named after a crime. Master of Puppets: 5/10, it would be a 10/10 if it was not in stranger things. The thing that should not be: 6/10 The riff is good but the repeated lyrics kinda get annoying and the build up to the lyrics is a little bit boring. Welcome home(Sanitarium): 9/10 SANITARIUM!!🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥, I can not believe Weezer ripped off that song, its too metal for them. Disposable Heroes: 10/10 that riff for the chorus is absolutely fire and the lyrics for the chorus connect to the idea of you are being controlled like a puppet to fight is genius. Leper Messiah: 10/10 BOW TO LEPER MESSIAH!!!!! The riff for this song is killer and my personal favorite Metallica riff and the lyrics melody is amazing and the double kick and toms Lars Ulrich is doing is stunning. Also the transition to the fast part and riff ROCKS!!!! Overall the best song on this album in my opinion. Orion: 10/10 Great instrumental and bass. R.I.P. Cliff Burton. I hate that bus driver.Who gets flat out drunk when they are carrying heavy metal gods on a bus? Damage INC: 5/10 its meh.One of the lyrics was also used for st anger so L St. Anger although that album is underrated.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH AGAIN!!!

There were no more riffs left after this album. Easiest 5 stars I'll have to give. 5.0/5.0: Iconic

One of the best metal albums ever made, thrash metal at full throttle intensity, accompanied by amazing song writing and atmospheric moments. A+

Classic metal album, master of puppets is the headliner but it's a complete album with no duds. Half of the album is all classic metal songs.

Really no need to listen to this one. I know it too well. Metallicas best I believe. I still remember when I bought it.

great!

A classic

Great album, one of their best

Master of Puppies. Good boy.

Ride the Lightning betta(This shit is still a masterpiece) tho

One of, if not the greatest metal albums of all time.

Essential thrash metal album. Intricately composed and lyrics that match the destruction and devastation of sound that is coming forth.

very gud

Even before the popularity of the title track exploded last year, this became a big album for me back after college. One of the guys in my dorm my freshman year would play this and "Ride The Lightning" every morning to get him going for the day. So it would creep into my head pretty quickly, but this album definitely had more staying power. You can't deny the whole first side and how for a metal band each song does sound very different. But it's definitely Metallica. I like "The Call of Ktulul" in "Ride The Lightning" a little better because there's more of an ending. As opposed to here where "Orion" just fades out. Still, it's a great piece to jam on to. Even the lesser known tracks "Leper Messiah" are well known by the fans. It's almost a proggy stomper. To me it's a classic, high energy metal must.

By far the best Metallica album and probably the best metal album period. Kicks ass from start to finish. Easy 5.

This era of Metallica was crazy good. Even as a Megadeth guy, I cannot deny that this album is excellent and deserves its spot on this list.

There ain’t nothing to say

There's musical growth going on!! 10/10. PS: for whom the bell tolls better tho.

Top 5 trash metal album

Legend status

Peak Metallica

Absolute scorcher. One of the albums that got me into metal. A Classic.

A total riff-fest. Leaves you wanting more, despite how long it is. Each song feels like it takes you on a real journey. Killer production that keeps everything clear while being heavily distorted.

Absolute goddamn fucking masterpiece

Master of Puppets is a staggering work of art. The fact Metallica were so young when they wrote these songs is crazy. There are no weak tracks here, and the entire band is in top form. The songs are heavy and musical, and have so much feeling and soul.

Great album. One of my favourites

Second Metallica album on the 1001 journey for me and I'm here for it. As a kid, I got into Metallica with the black album and didn't really look backwards in their catalog until much later. In star wars terms I'm a prequel kid and knew bits of the original trilogy of albums, but it wasn't until recently I noticed the lyrics to " Master of Puppets" and realized the greatness. Pretty legendary album in the metal world, but I do think the first half is stronger than the second. Not quite perfect, but closer to 5 than 4 stars Favorite track "Master of Puppets" 4.5/5

A natural 5 for those of us who already like Metallica

Metallica's 1986 masterpiece, Master of Puppets, stands as a titan in the metal landscape. This review delves into the intricate details of the album, dissecting its lyrical depth, musical prowess, production choices, thematic exploration, lasting influence, and acknowledging minor shortcomings. Lyrics: A Descent into Darkness James Hetfield's lyrics transcend the typical bravado of thrash. Tracks like "Battery" explore the exhilarating power of drumming, while "The Thing That Should Not Be" takes a Lovecraftian plunge into cosmic horror. The title track delves into the insidious grip of addiction, a theme far ahead of its time in metal. Hetfield's mastery shines in "Sanitarium," a harrowing journey through the confines of a mental asylum. Lines like "Enter Sandman" weave dreamlike imagery with a sense of underlying dread. Cliff Burton's lyrical contributions on "Orion" add a philosophical layer, hinting at humanity's place in the vast universe. Music: A Thrashing Masterpiece Musically, Master of Puppets is a clinic in technicality and groove. Kirk Hammett's guitar work explodes with razor-sharp riffs and soaring leads. Tracks like "Battery" and "Master of Puppets" showcase his ability to weave intricate melodies within the aggressive framework. Cliff Burton's bass lines are thunderous and inventive, providing a powerful foundation. Lars Ulrich's drumming is a relentless assault, his double-bass technique pushing the boundaries of thrash. However, moments of dynamic contrast emerge in tracks like "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," where slower tempos and intricate fills create a sense of unease. Production: Capturing the Raw Energy Produced by Flemming Rasmussen, the album boasts a raw and powerful sound. The guitars retain a distinct bite, the drums pack a punch, and Hetfield's vocals snarl with controlled aggression. While some might find the production slightly dated compared to modern standards, it perfectly captures the unbridled energy of the band. Themes: A Tapestry of Darkness and Duality Master of Puppets grapples with various dark themes. Addiction ("Master of Puppets"), war ("Disposable Heroes"), and the confines of societal structures ("Leper Messiah") are explored with unflinching honesty. "Orion" offers a brief respite, a majestic instrumental that hints at a search for meaning beyond the darkness. The album also delves into the duality of human nature. Tracks like "Battery" celebrate the raw power and liberation of self-expression, while "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" exposes the vulnerability of the human mind. This exploration of contrasting themes adds depth and emotional resonance to the music. Influence: Shaping a Genre Master of Puppets's influence on metal is undeniable. It cemented thrash metal as a dominant force, inspiring countless bands like Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. The album's technical proficiency, songwriting ingenuity, and dark lyrical themes became a blueprint for the genre. Its influence transcended metal, impacting alternative rock and even grunge. Bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden acknowledged Master of Puppets as a significant influence, showcasing its far-reaching impact on the broader musical landscape. Minor Shortcomings: A Balanced Perspective While Master of Puppets stands as a landmark achievement, acknowledging minor shortcomings fosters a balanced perspective. The relentless aggression can feel overwhelming at times, and some might find the production slightly lacking in sonic clarity compared to modern standards. Hetfield's vocal delivery, while powerful, occasionally leans towards a more monotone style. However, these are minor observations that do not diminish the album's overall brilliance. Conclusion: A Timeless Masterpiece Master of Puppets is more than just a metal album; it's a cultural touchstone. Its impact on music transcends genres, inspiring generations of musicians and listeners. The album's lyrical depth, musical virtuosity, and exploration of dark themes solidify its place as a timeless masterpiece.

It was impossible to be a metal head in the late ‘80s and ‘90s and not know this album. It was Metallica firing on all cylinders at their career best (arguable ever). Hell, the first song I ever wrote was based on a riff I lifted from Disposable Heroes. Songs like Sanitarium and the title track helped make the entire genre. My favorite, though, was the instrumental Orion because it showed in detail the musical talent of each musician in their prime. Not only did Cliff Burton pen one of the most recognizable bass lines 1/2 way through (I spent so many hours learning and practicing it) but also plays the final distorted solo which for years I thought was Kirk Hammett. Metallica went on to have many great bass players but they were never treated with the dignity they gave Cliff whom died supporting this album. This was his Opus.

When I was 18 to 20, I was going every saturday to music shops in my hometown, spending whole afternoons listening to music, and buying more or less random stuff, partly because I was eager to build my musical culture. Master of Puppets is one of these albums I knew about but never listen to, and that I decided to buy. I loved the stark, raw and stripped down sound (especially compared to what I was listening to at that time -- way too much symphonic metal). It's fast but not overly technical, it's kind of harsh but every track is actually pretty long and takes it time to develop. I did not listen to this album for quite some time and I still love it to the bone. I've never dug too much what they did afterward, but this album is gold.

Very Metal.

A masterpiece of perfection.

Absolute classic!

More Orion!

the heavy metal album to end all heavy metal albums. it's so extreme, so commanding in its often speedy guitar solos and booming, exploding drums. the kind of music that feels like it was written by not just metalheads, but the ancient gods of metal, zapping you with lightning and supercharging you into the night.

4.8 Classic thrash front to back. Kill 'em all is my favorite Metallica album but Master of Puppets is probably the best

This is one of the most important albums of my life. Master of Puppets is the song I heard the most times. Highly recommend listening to live versions of Battery and Orion with Jason Newstead on bass.

One of the greatest metal albums ever.

"Master of Puppets," Metallica's magnum opus, is a monumental achievement in the annals of heavy metal, earning justified lauds for its unparalleled complexity and intensity. Released in 1986, this album not only defined the thrash metal genre but also showcased Metallica's ambitious musicality, blending breakneck speed with intricate arrangements and thought-provoking themes. From the relentless fury of "Battery" to the epic title track, and the haunting instrumentals of "Orion," each song is a masterclass in precision, dynamics, and storytelling. The album's exploration of themes such as addiction, control, and the futility of war resonates as much today as it did at its release, demonstrating the band's depth and the timeless nature of their work. The production of "Master of Puppets" strikes a perfect balance between raw energy and meticulous craftsmanship, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining the aggressive edge that is quintessential to Metallica's sound. Cliff Burton's bass lines, in particular, add a rich, melodic layer that complements the dual guitar assault of Hetfield and Hammett, while Ulrich's drums anchor the band's sonic exploration with precision and intensity. The album’s title track, with its iconic riff and complex structure, epitomizes the band's ability to fuse melodic elements with the raw power of thrash metal, creating an anthemic masterpiece that has become a cornerstone of the genre. "Master of Puppets" stands not merely as Metallica's crowning achievement but as a landmark in music history, a testament to the band's innovation, creativity, and influence. It transcends the confines of metal, offering a powerful commentary on human nature and society that challenges listeners while providing a relentless sonic journey. This album is essential listening for anyone with an interest in the evolution of heavy music and remains a benchmark by which all subsequent metal albums are judged. Its enduring legacy is a tribute to Metallica's vision and the indelible mark they have left on the musical landscape.

5 for Jase; 3 for Nan… good guitar riffs and drums but makes Nan stressed… cortisol through the roof

Fantastic album. Raw unparalleled energy mixed with excellent musicianship. Top tracks: Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes, Orion

Cool stuff

Absolute ripper bonza beauty mate

1. Battery - Metallica largely stuck to a format for their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th records. As a result, it’s hard not to compare the songs in each “slot” across the albums. I’ve always liked Fight Fire With Fire better than this song, but that’s no knock on Battery, which is essentially a more refined version of a very similar song. A perfect album opener, and a testament to how good Metallica is that it’s like their 4th best album opener. 5/5 2. Master of Puppets - what’s left to be said? Perfect. 5/5 3. The Thing That Should Not Be - kind of underrated, to the extent that anything on this album can be considered underrated. Foreboding, doomy, also oddly catchy. 4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - again, it kind of falls into the shadow of Fade to Black and One, which are similar, but definitely superior songs. That said, this song could really only look “just okay” in comparison to two of the best songs, metal or otherwise, ever. Taken on its own merits, this song rules. The pattern (both rhythmic and melodic) of the vocals during the verses is great it a way that I can put my finger on. Maybe the song best suited to James Hetfield’s younger, screechier voice. The riffs crush and progression of the song keeps it from ever feeling overlong. 4.5/5 5. Disposable Heroes - As an aside, you can tell that this album was sequenced for vinyl with this as the lead off to side 2. I don’t own the vinyl but I would imagine it works even better in that context, where track 5 is like the opener of a second set rather than a hard pivot to an upbeat song mid album. As for the song itself, again, it rules. Kirk’s leads really stand out as a highlight. Also, given what comes later, it’s exciting to hear the moment Metallica progressed to big, global subject matter after two albums focused on “the metal lifestyle” and fairly teenage concerns, like Ktulu, respectively. - 5/5 6. Leper Messiah - I don’t think a lot of people would name this as Metallica’s best song, but apart from Master of Puppets, One, or another of the thrash-era “hits”, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a more quintessential Metallica. The title is so perfectly “Metallica”, it’s powerful and propulsive, the drums are wild but oddly intuitive, and it has the thing that Metallica has that so many of its peers lack - a hook. 5/5 7. Orion - An all-time great instrumental - you almost forget that vocals are usually a part of rock songs. Also a perfect, if unintended, epitaph for Cliff. 5/5 8. Damage, Inc. - Aaaaaand out with a bang. 5/5 —- Much like Born in the USA is one of the all time greats and also like the 4th-best Springsteen album, this album is rightfully considered one of, if not THE quintessential metal albums, and yet people (including me) regularly put it as their 3rd or 4th favorite Metallica album. I think the sad thing about Metallica is that the individual musicians peaked at different times. Obviously, it’s Cliff’s last album, and he was never better. And I’m not sure they ever top this album from a songwriting perspective. But James’ voice improves significantly on the next two albums. Kirk and Lars probably both peak on the next album, and the best sounding Metallica album is the Black Album. Imagine if all of those things had come together at the same time. But, minor flaws, what-ifs, and all, this album still comes out to be more or less perfect, and indisputably one of the genres high water marks.

Amazing album. Enjoy every song on this. Even like Orion and I usually hate instrumentals.

Another Top 10 album for me - Y9 wowes loved this shit

One of my favorite albums of all time!

Left my head spinning. Awesome!

I’ve listened to this a million times, but gave it one more playthrough to confirm - yes, this is perfect. Deserves its status as one of the greatest metal albums of all time.

Grrrrrr Fuck Yeah!

Chef d'oeuvre, Masterpiece, Fuck yeah.

A masterpiece (pun intended and all)

Incredible album. First time listening in many years and still sounds brutal and intense. Standout track this time was "Disposable Heroes"

Metallica is the only metal which I really enjoy. A really solid album and people are right to think its one of the best. I will be listening to this again.

i was fairly familiar with the front half of this album going into it and it's great. this is thrash metal at its peak, and there's some cool prog influence here as well. the cover art is also iconic. metallica's 80s output is definitely a high water mark for metal, though later years may fail to impress. i don't consider myself a huge metallica fan or anything but they were really in their prime here. favorites: tracks 1-4 and 6-7. disposable heroes is pretty good and damage inc was fine but the rest are absolutely stellar.

Absolutely incredible 10/10

All time favorite!!!

Classique.

RIP Cliff Burton

ig: @musicwithnessa

One of those rare albums where I'm pretty sure that every track has been my favourite track at some point throughout the years.

The Wikipedia page doesn’t include the word “progressive” other than once in a quote from a single review. Which is just nonsense. Master Of Puppets is thrash, but it’s undeniably a progressive metal album as well. Every single track kills, the tempo on “Disposable Heroes” is beyond intense, and the songwriting is as good as Metallica will ever be. Also, say what you will about Lars Ulrich. He delivers an incredible performance on Master of Puppets and I couldn’t imagine the record without those at times messy but always fun fills.

Great metal album, from the melodic intro to the powerful last track. No bad tracks and some great ones

Birth. School. Metallica. Death.

So intense. I don’t think I could listen to it everyday but a metal classic.

Classique 👌

Tätä tykitettiin nonstoppina kutosluokalla Kisakallion leirikoulussa. Ei ehkä enää iske samalla intensiteetillä, mut onhan tämä levy timanttia

Only one of the greatest albums of all time

Master of Puppets is an absolute gold standard when it comes to metal. Ride the Lightning, Justice for All, and Master of Puppets are THE finest Metallica albums out of their earlier catalog. Every song on the album is perfect in its own way. The song "Master of Puppets" alone has over 780 million streams on Spotify. "Battery" is an absolute banger. "Orion", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and "Leper Messiah" are some of the other classics from this album that never gets old. Master of Puppets is in my regular rotation and will be for a long time.

Master of Puppets was the first tape I ever bought on the recommendation of a friend. I had previously only heard a couple of the popular metallica songs from other albums. This album probably changed my life. It showed the darker, heavier side of music to me and I discovered that I liked that. It combines the heavy fuzzy guitars with brighter solos timed perfectly. The recording is crisp and the tracks are clearly seperated. Translation: I can hear each instrument well and can understand how it fits into the overall arrangement. While the album is of one style, I can tell the difference from track to track, they dont blend in together. The final song, Orion might by my favorite on the album. It contains all elements of the rest of the album into one long epic.

Enjoyed each song, made my morning go faster!

Absolutely shreds

Melt your face. Don’t hear stuff this good too often.

this album rules. I don't think that even needs to be reiterated. Not an unpopular opinion, but they never sounded better than this. fave tracks: Battery, Disposable Heroes.

Un Máster de una de mis bandas favoritas. Excelente composición y muy buenos Riffs. El sonido pudiera ser mejor, hace que no se sienta contemporáneo.

Amazing

I've heard this album enough times to have made my mind up about it a long time ago: a stone cold classic, a band at their peak. RIP Cliff Burton

Man I love this album.

Trés content. Je connaissais déjà le son qui a donné le titre à l'album. Mais tout le reste de l'album est principalement dans le même registre est c'est un banger. Des gros riffs, des solos et des paroles méchanteeeeeeee. Tiptop

I own this record. I've listened to this album many times. I love this album. Cliff Burton's final album before his tragic death. I enjoy all the songs on this album, but my favorite is the eight and a half minute instrumental Orion. This is also the final album before Metallica took over MTV with One and before the mega selling black album. 5 out of 5

The best album by Metallica! Every track is a masterpiece!

Best album from metallica

This album is perfect. I loved it when it came out. I had not listened to it in years. It has aged quite well. The buildup from the start of the first track is awesome, and the high note it ends on is equally awesome. Arguably this is one of their best albums if not the best.

Not new to me, an old favourite. Not bad Monday morning listening!

🤘🤘🤘 🔥🔥🔥 5/5

Brings back all the 15 year old teenage angst ! 4.5

FUVKING MASTERPIECE

5/5 damn tämä on yksi kaikkien aikojen albumeista

Classic. Every song gets me moving which is when I know I love something! Hard to believe it took me so long to get into metal, but here I am. Listen again: definitely Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: all of them, but I’ll go with Orion.

Best metal album of all time? It's up there for sure.

Uh this is the best Metallica album. I mean it just hits in every possible way

Awesome album, just the right amount of kick ass. Master of Puppets, Orion, and Thr Thing that Should Not Be are my favorites here.

Cudowne 5/5

Delighted to see this pop up, I've been listening to it a lot this year. This is Metallica's only perfect album IMO. A big improvement on ...AJFA, and better than the self titled. I'm still not sure why so many Metallica albums are included, this one and The Black Album would be enough.

Coming off of Ride the Lightning, Metallica did the unthinkable and wrote an even better record. Master of Puppets is a flawless record. The direction they went in with this album was risk taking and it paid off. It doesn't stray too far from Metallica's sound that preceded this record but the introduction to more melodic structures, acoustic parts, guitar swells, bass solos... This is Metallica writing in their prime. All members are on fire. Yes, even Lars. To me, this was Metallica best album. This was Cliff Burton's last record with the band before his premature death. I can only imagine what Metallica would sound like, what type of records they would have put out if Cliff was still around. No shade to Jason Newstead or Robert Trujillo. They definitely have their place in Metallica History. I mean, Jason co wrote one, if not THE most commercially successful metal album; the self titled Black Album. But after that record, to me, Metallica adopted a more hard rock sound that almost hindered their career. Jason was also on And Justice For All... But you can't hear him. The ego that is Hetfield and Ulrich ruined that album. This is a discussion for another record though.. This album starts with an acoustic intro to Battery that sounds heavy itself. Once Battery kicks in with the whole band.. This song is a punch to the face with technical speed and aggressive riffs. Following that song is the title track, that we all know and love. To most, I'd say it's the favourite. My personal favourites are Damage Inc. And Disposable Hero's. The Instrumental track Orion, shows off their skill and risk taking in writing a song. It's one of the best metal instrumentals to date. There isn't a bad song on this album. The flow is perfect. Slow acoustic build up to fast gut wrenching riffs in Battery... Followed by more fast riffs in Master of Puppets but introducing some melodic guitar solos.. Slowing down with Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and then dialing it up to 11 with agrresiveness of Disposable Hereos and Leper Messiah. Then comes in the instrumental which, I mentioned before showcases how skillfully and crafty this band is. This band ends on a high note with Damage Inc. I can't say anything wrong with this album. Each song has its own identity. And they all fit cohesively and copacetic.

Rinsed this album dry as a teenager so it's hard to listen to it freshly. But having just had Back in Black, which I rated as a fun 4*, surely MoP has to be in 5* territory. Not their best album (RtL imo), but with only one week track on the album (thing that should not be) and 4 or 5 absolute bangers, including one of the most powerful album openers of all time... Well done.

A total classic, can’t say anything else.

This is probably my favorite Metallica album. A friend introduced me to the band through this album shortly after it came out, and it’s really the album that brought me back into the metal fold, after moving on from metal for a couple of years prior. Master of Puppets really opened up all the possibilities of what you can do in metal. The sheer sonic power, the incredibly nuanced musicianship, the lyrical depth… I imagine hearing this for the first time was somewhat akin to what it like hearing Sabbath when they came out. And my people, the band just simply rocks, harder than we knew was possible at the time. I said this in another review, but listening to this for the first time was like having someone turn the lights on for the first time, and everything was different after that. But also, for as hard as it rocks, the band never loses their musicality. The album is full of really lovely, classically beautiful moments, and it's never particularly hard on the ears. It can be as elegant as it is blistering, and the band balances this dichotomy on the thinnest of lines, which is just about the hardest thing a band can do in this genre without sounding forced or inauthentic. Loved hearing it again today. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Battery, Orion, Damage, Inc., Leper Messiah, Disposable Heroes, The Thing That Should Not Be

El metal como herencia de los 80 para todas mis influencias más grandes, aquí se nota.

Perhaps the best metal album ever. This was followed up by an excellent EP. Then the garbage album Justice came out. So enjoy this as peak thrash metallic.

If anyone wants to know what heavy metal is, I think give them this album and it sums it up and done well. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, but this album…I believe Metallica’s best, is a perfect heavy metal album. It has great riffs, driving beats, songs that change up and even a whole concept of “Master of Puppets”. I was surprised how much I did enjoy the album, it won’t be on my regular playlist but I have to give props to the masters.

One of the most iconic metal albums. MOP was truly a game changer for the genre and lead the way for continued greatness of metal.

Rating: 10/10 My favorite album of all time. This is heavy metal (and thrash metal) at its finest: heavy, intricate, and melodic with virtuosic songwriting. The riffs are incredible, the production is incredible, and the solos are incredible, everything about this album is to the highest standard musically while still being very heavy and interesting throughout. All of the songs are amazing, not a single second is wasted on this album.

loved pretty much every song in the album

Classic thrash metal. It's way more polished than their first record, but its still one of the most influential metal albums out there

One of the most legendary albums of all time. I love every song.

classic

Almost perfect. Great 80s metal

A metal masterclass. Every song is just peak thrash, and the production is perfect - there’s a clarity you don’t quite get on the preceding Metallica releases (or on And Justice for All) but still keeping an energy that is missing from some of their later records

I may be a metalhead however this is some of the most amazing music I've ever heard. Elton John said they made some of the best music ever as well.

This is their best album with no room for speculation. Top of their game, after perfecting their sound on previous albums. It is scary to think how good they would continue to be with Cliff if he survived. One of the best albums of the 80s.

5. Beautiful album. It flows so well overall

Fuck yeah

the “big 4” of thrash metal… anthrax, slayer, megadeth, and metallica. to this day there is a debate amongst metalheads as to who is the best. three of the four of them (the exception being anthrax, just so you know) released their breakout album in 1986. all four bands have distinctive styles and have evolved their sound over the years. today’s entry was metallica’s breakout album of 1986, the monster that is master of puppets. this is a thrash masterpiece and many consider it one of the greatest metal albums of all time and it’s kind of hard to argue with that. themes of drug abuse, mental illness, war, and religion are all on the table. great songwriting, crunchy guitars with technical soloing, james hetfield’s classic growl, and a solid rhythm section holding it down. so who do i think is the best of the big 4? well, i prefer either slayer or megadeth (in spite of dave mustaine’s political views). however, clearly the biggest of them turned out to be metallica, for what it’s worth. fun fact: dave mustaine was one of the original members of metallica. in spite of the band being notorious drunks with fans lovingly referring to them as “alcoholica”, mustaine was fired from the band for being unreliable due to his “substance abuse” issues. go figure. after being fired, he regrouped and formed the band megadeth. mustaine has since buried the hatchet with the boys. yet another fun fact: after the death of cliff burton, bass players from all over tried out for the band, including les claypool of primus fame. the one who ended up with the gig was jason newsted, formerly of flotsam and jetsam. highlights: “battery”, “the thing that should not be”, “leper messiah”.

Classic

maybe their best

Did not listen to this one at this time. Metallica was my favorite band when this album came out. I listened to this probably more than any other album except for maybe Ride the Lightning and Master of Reality.

Великий

I was a freshman in high school when this came out, talked about timing, perfect age for this music. Was my favorite album for quite a long time, played it almost to the point of exhaustion. I still love to put this album o, crank it up loud, bang my head and hear a ghostly echo of my parents telling me to turn it down.

Polished and thrash don’t feel like descriptors that should apply to the same record. This record moves at breakneck speed but with tight precision and is so clean that I wouldn’t consider it thrash at all. Hammet is an amazing guitarist. Semantics aside, this is an excellent record that set the course for broad market acceptance of speed metal. So also the beginning of the end of Metallica (after AJfA).

BATTERY

Classic thrash metal album by the originators and masters of the genre. The assets of this one are too numerous to be all taken into account in a short review: off-kilter time signatures, dark subject matter for the lyrics, some "progressive" moments mixed with full-blown agressive sequences, a very dynamic tracklisting... James Hetfield's vocals are an acquired taste, yet they're here noticeably better than on Metallica's other classic LP *Ride The Lightening* (and they're not yet burdened with the man's hicupping vocal tics on subsequent releases). As for "Orion", it is the cream on the cake: an extraordinary ambient twofold instrumental sending this legendary thrasher band to the stratosphere and beyond. The stats of this app say I don't like metal. Nope, I've warmed up to it a lot in the last decade. It's just that I don't exactly see eye to eye with the metal selections in the 1001 Albums book. There are not enough recent bands, and too many cheesy examples of the genre during the eighties--either lame acts such as Judas Priest, or clearly underwhelming records by musicians that had otherwise mastered that style elsewhere, like Metallica's own *... And Justice For All*. But I guess that's a story for another time, kiddies... In the meantime, it's great that most people can agree about *Master of Puppets* at least. Number of albums left to review: 392 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 274 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 144 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 193

Classic metal album.

A force of nature. The essential thrash metal album. Full of all time classics and headbanging deeper cuts.

The best

I'm envious of anyone discovering this album for the first time. Metallica has perfected the art of the guitar solo. Their lead guitar sings and screeches. It really steals the show in most of their songs. They do such a good job of building up each song by ramping up the pacing. Then it crescendos when the solo kicks in and the solos are always face melters. I love the way they weave soft vocals in with the harsh scream/singing too. There are so many good Metallica albums that it's hard to pick a favorite. But Master of Puppets has to be one of the most iconic and it easily makes my top 3.

One of my all-time favorites, a seminal and brutal thrash record that stands the test of time.

Absolute banger.

Love love love. Many popular hits on this one ..even my wife enjoyed some of them, and she is NOT a metal fan

I have already listened to this album; Metallica is already my favorite band. Has an awesome opening song and one of the best songs ever on it. Need to add to my CD collection.

Metallica good, what else can I say.

Rules!

Been listening to this for over 30 years. It's part of my DNA. Brilliant.

Brought me back to being 16

Metallica at their best

I've been listening to Metallica for decades now. Great album, maybe their best.

Don't know if I've listened to this album all the way through before but I can see why Metallica was such a huge success

First listened to this album back in high school when I was 15. Been a fan since. Learned the title track in guitar before graduation.

Classic metal album

cmon its just the fucking best

Top thrash metal

Pas pu reproduire les conditions optimales d'écoute (avoir quinze ans, le mettre à fond dans sa chambre à partir d'un cd gravé avec les mp3 trouvés sur eMule). Quand même top, rien à redire.

work of art, great album

As far as thrash metal goes, I always preferred Anthrax over Metallica, but it’s hard to deny this as a masterpiece. I’m sure I heard all of these songs when I was a teenager, but only the first two track were familiar. Favorite track: Battery (or as I like to sing it, Batt-er-rang).

Fucking RAD
