The epitome of the thrash metal albums.

One of the best metal albums and my 2nd favorite Metallica album. Fav songs: Battery, Master of Puppets, Orion.

Strong opening with track ‘Battery’ Powers into the mighty title track! Malevolent power Elaborate riffage taking you on a sonic journey Then, penultimate track Orion arrives and sweeps everything away in its majesty and summons up the most glorious Sabbath like moments

I never realised how much I loved all the tracks until I looked at the tracklist before giving this a listen. Like it’s probably my album of the year for 1986 maybe only to be challenged by the Queen is dead and maybe Graceland. Battery is just awesome the acoustic intro leading way for a stadium ready riff then going into pure thrash metal and it all working so well is just admirable. Thinking about master of puppets, stranger things really did a great job of making genuinely good song’s successful, the song is cool I feel as if the instrumental is a bit out of place especially when it begins but it picks up well enough for the song to still work. The thing that should not be is this slow heavy track that looms over the rest of the tracklist, I absolutely love the verses in this song also the S&M version is great (also that version of ‘of wolf and man’ is incredible too). I know that’s black album but it’s just incredible. Sanatarium is greatly and quite catchy, I feel as if it’s overshadowed by some of the other tracks though as it’s by far the weakest on side one even if it’s really good. ‘BACK TO THE FRONT’ I can’t believe disposable heroes is so long I know there are longer songs on the album but really it goes by quickly probably because of how fast and intense it is. Amazing choice for side b track 1. I love the line ‘solider boy made of clay now an empty shell’. Leper messiah has an incredibly infectious little riff. I love the meaning of this song too about the corruption of religion, specifically about televangelists. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the title/hook off the song was taken from ziggy stardust. Orion is this long, long spacey instrumental, I won’t lie the middle bit does bore me a bit but it’s nice to let the guitars really breathe in this song. The start of damage inc is really cool especially after Orion and having the slower intro (kinda harkens back to battery) but honestly I find it to be one of my least favourites on the album it’s solid but I don’t think it’s as great as some of the other tracks. Master of puppets is slightly front loaded but overall one of the best metal albums of all time, it doesn’t ever slip massively and every song is of a high level of quality. 5/5

pure raw metal

Classic

Masterfull! Some of their best tunes on here. Perfectly heavy AND melodic.

5/5. An amazing thrash metal album. Every song has amazing riffs and catchy vocals, despite the aggression. The lyrical content is just as important, with anti-war and anti-government themes. The instrumentation is so heavy and good, I've put this on repeat so many times. Although the instrumental song is not perfect, this album as a whole is awesome.

AWESOME !!!

Brilliant. Soaring solos and vocals. Bangs from start to finish.

Man what an album. Electrifying, aggressive and powerful. The drums and guitars just sound awesome in this. The vocals are fantastic as well. What usually turns me away from the metal genre, are the unintelligible screaming vocals. There is almost none of that here. I mean they're still somewhat rough and harsh, but it's a prefect mix between a more melodic and aggressive tone. Definitely gonna listen to this again.

If you are gonna listen to thrash this is the album for you.

Bombastic, loud, ridiculous, political, anti-war, tasty album.

Sólo por Master of puppets se merece el 5, pero es que además tiene casi todas buenas.

Awesome, no notes.

Sometime during the spring semester of my senior year in high school, my parents found two CD cases tossed into our yard (long story). One of the CDs in the cas was Metallica's Master of Puppets, which I happily kept. I used to listen to the title track pretty regularly, even trying to make it from my house to my job before the track ended (I can't remember if I was ever successful, but at least there were never any negative outcomes from this stunt). However, I don't think I've ever listened to this album in its entirety until today. This album is thrash metal perfection. The lyrics are sharp and poignant, from the criticisms of American militarism on "Disposable Heroes," to the criticisms of the false prophets of evangelicals on "Leper Messiah," this album doesn't pull any punches. Musically, it's exactly what I want from Metallica as well: fast when it needs to be, loud when it needs to be, and yet melodic enough that you realize just how talented these guys are as songwriters. Hetfield's vocals are outstanding here as well, even though he only gets better on later albums. This is a fantastic album, and I'm ashamed that I've owned it for nearly two decades, but never listened to all of it until today.

Very good. The Thing That Should Not Be is my favorite lesser known Metallica song. My only complaint is that the songs eventually blend together toward the end. Still very good.

One of the best metal albums od all time, if not THE best

Dos clásicos al hilo

Another classic, flawless. Love all the songs on this from start to finish.

Classic and way better than the 80's deserved.

A bonafide slap merchant.

классика

Fuck yeah Metallica

Hell yeah. Hard to beat old school thrashy Metallica.

Rips. We all know it rips. Will always rip. 5/5

Fuckin fantastic headbanging metal. It's no wonder this is a lot of people's favorite band. Strong vocals, excellent guitar & bass, and perfectly executed percussion. As a side note, I'm glad Master of Puppets was featured on Stranger Things. I hope the younger generations carry on with the meal tradition. I never want it to die. 🤘

Next to Ride the Lightning, this is my favourite Metallica album. Solid from start to finish. Kirk Hammet is a virtuoso on the guitar. His solos and leads are borderline classical.

Classic metal album

Classic

Groundbreaking...

What a … masterful … album! eh, anyone??? That’s a good one. I’m sort of glad I didn’t discover old school Metallica in my younger years. I probably would have burst a neck disk from head banging so much. This music pairs well with a smash room, one of those places you pay to break stuff. Everything about the title track is amazing except the guitar solo at 5:47-5:49, which drives me crazy. I fucking hate the whammy bar, at least I think it’s the whammy bar making that god awful, cheesy “woooo woOOOoo woOOoo” sound. It is a stain on the song, the album, and Metallica’s legacy. Alright maybe not a stain on their legacy, but I can’t not hear “woooo woOOOoo woOOoo” any time I think about this song. I prefer Ride The Lightning to all their albums, which isn’t on the list, but only slightly over Master Of Puppets. This album thrashes in every good way possible.

Thrash-terpiece.

GOAT thrash album.

So great! I prefer Ride the Lightning, but this is is still a perfect album.

Master Of Puppets was released in 1986 and improved on the sound of Ride The Lightning. Production and songwriting have been perfected and missteps like Escape have not made the cut like on its predecessor. Even the structure of the album is almost identical. The first track Battery hits right in after a quiet intro. Metallica at its loudest. The title track, as well as Disposable Heroes, with their eight+ minutes, are epic songs in which everything comes together. Hard, fast riffs, a quiet passage with beautiful melodies and a lightning fast solo by Kirk Hammett. The quiet Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is then a ballad with a somewhat harder chorus and beautiful guitar solos that eventually builds to a great climax. The instrumental Orion is another highlight. Atmospheric, chock full of riffs and solos and a real bass solo from Cliff Burton. Burton also opens the album's closer, Damage, Inc. With this sledgehammer blow, the album is closed even more furiously than it opened. Metallica would never reach the level of this album again. Master Of Puppets is still regarded as one of the best and most influential metal albums. The metal album everyone should know.

Seriously? If I could, I'd give it 6 stars.

🤘🤘🤘🤘

Still one of the best metal albums I've heard, and a relisten proves that yet again. Everyone knows "Battery" and the self-titled track, but "Orion" just makes this album even better as an incredible instrumental track.

An amazing album from start to finish, iconic

Metallica became a a juggernaut with this album. The opening to Sanitarium is about as good of a front half of an album ever.

This is one of my favorite all time best of albums. Almost perfect!

Not sure that I’ve ever sat down and listened to this front to back until today, but I still knew every song. You can’t deny this album’s legendary status. I’d be a fool to dock any stars!

Not a fan of the entire album as a whole but it certainly takes me back to a time when it was one of my faves. Still love Sanitarium as much as ever. Still deserves a 5.

It's Metallica. Good all the way through.

My top 10 album of all time

Best album given so far (it may also align with my music tastes more than any of the others lol)

Diyecek laf yok resmen. Ayrıca şu elektro gitar güzel doğru ellerde olunca eriyorum, mükemmel bir alet. solid (9/10) for me

My only qualm is that, if you're gonna recommend the studio version of this album, why bother showing multiple live Metallica album before. It took the magic out of the listening experience.

Episch album is episch album. Niet alles is even goed, maar wat goed is, is geweldig!

All-time album. No misses. The best track is Master of Puppets. Alright, let's listen to the album now.

The best

Top tier

I looked up the definition of “Going hard in the paint.” All I found was a picture of this album! Yet another master metalpiece from true pioneers, Metallica! TBz 1. Master Of Puppets 2. Orion 3. The Thing That Should Not Be 4. Battery 5. Leper Messiah 6. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 7. Damage, Inc. 8. Disposal Heroes Every song a banger, obvious 5!

CHUG! CHUG CHUG CHUG!

Master! Master!

Metallica's second best album after "Ride the Lightning" which is excluded from the list for some reason, even though "S&M" is on here! Fuck you Robert Dimery!! This album is nonstop energy - banger after banger. "Battery" is one of the best opening tracks of all time. "Master of Puppets" is a song that I tried to beat on Expert+ difficulty in Beat Saber once and almost died. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is my personal favorite on the album. The only "meh" song is probably "Leper Messiah", but it's still three times better than any Metallica song post-Black Album.

Non-stop, head-banging, floor-shaking, Tinitus-inducing thrash metal! MoP will mark, in my opinion, the penultimate good Metallica album and just about as close to perfection they could get. 4.5/5.

Grew and grew on me. It's not my usual thing but every song seems to get better and better the more you listen to it. It's also so technically brilliant. Loved it.

5/5 Ich muss nicht viel dazu sagen. Ich glaube das beste Album bis jetzt. Bang bang bang banger

This was an easy 5/5. One of the best/most influential metal bands from the 80s/90s. I've listened to this album so many times. \m/

Great album, classic, a must-listen for metal heads!

Total banger.

Classic peak Thrash

This is JUST exactly what I needed to hear today!

I had a good album send me more of this kind of music…

One of the very best heavy metal albums of all time.

It's tempting to refer to this as the sibling of "Ride the Lightning", better sibling even. Not really because it sounds like Lightning 2 but because it sounds like Lightning version 2. Lightning but more complex, more polished, and more epic. But that may only be because of Metallica's conservatism, making the albums follow the same pattern of tracks. Not to mention the overlapping themes. On top of that, the tricks and thrill of Lightning and Puppets are almost the same. Nice headbanging riffs, aggressive vocals, melodic section that catches one off guard, power ballads that ravages like avalanche, epic instrumental track, etc. So which one is better? The epic Lightning in bright blue? Or the wild Puppets in fiery red? I think it doesn't matter, because both equally blew my mind.

Muito massa o sonzao

It was thumping, bumping and I couldn’t get enough of it

Fantastic album, one of the best metal albums. Kirk’s guitar riffs and Cliff’s bass drive this album from start to finish

Rust In Peace>>>>>

Incredibal album, few songs but with great length and an incredible energy to them. Iconic songs but more importantly you feel the power in some of the musical parts... Solid 4.5/5

Classic thrash. Never gets old.

Nice guitar solos

A great album. 80's Metallica is such a joy to listen to. You know, before the dark times began. I personally like Ride The Lightning better, but this is no slouch as the runner up for the bands best work.

A true classic. I'm not a big fan of metal but this is one of my favourite albums of all time. There's a nice mix of fast thrashers, melodic ballads, and slow heavy grooves, sometimes all within the same song. There's also no weak tracks either which plague the best of albums as well. Master of Puppets, Battery and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) have always been my highlights since listening this for the first time 8 years ago but there's always a time and place for the rest, including the instrumental Orion. On a sidenote, it's cool Metallica and this album gained some popularity with the title track being featured on Stranger Things.

All-time classic album. I absolutely love this - and it gave me a motto to use for life.

Masterpiece.

This album is a 5 just out of nostalgia alone. The way that Metallica was able to weave tension into their music was like a bomb going off in my tiny little brain.

going back in the list to rate this since it is my favorite band. MOP start to finish is great. Aggression, sadness, fear, descent into madness, unspeakable monsters, fuck you to the military, psychiatric, and religious industrial complexes --- great stuff. Oh, you say you can't have a 8 1/2 minute instrumental on an album -- fuck you. Oh, and it is basically a bass solo but the bass does the work of 3 instruments -- double fuck you. Did I mention the bass is recorded playing fingerstyle, none of that pristine picking, just nasty and raw -- triple fuck you. Oh, wait, the bass player is wearing bell bottom jeans in 1983 - that is a fourth fuck you. Song about a Lovecraftian monster from the deep? No one asked for it but Metallica is serving it up anyway cause we should want it. Anti religious establishment song title snagged from Bowie's Ziggy Stardust? you guessed it - fuck you. Battery and Damage, Inc. -- no one cares what they are about -- they are the perfect opener/closer in your face combo. The main riff in Battery shouldnt work but somehow it does because it is willed into existence. Time signature? Irrelevant. What is Damage Inc.? It doesnt matter because it already punched you in the face. Master of Puppets' opening downpicked riff, the slow two guitar harmony bit, the call-response -- great. Hearing it all live when they hit their stride made your bones shiver. It all seems tame now especially seeing it on Stranger Things (which was perfect), but this was the band's 3rd album, the oldest member was 23, they had no radio play, no music video, and no fear. Fuck you.

Absolute banger

I'm not into metal yet I still know these songs. That is what makes it an absolute and a genre-defining album.

Brilliant. Nice to listen in full as I usually only listen to the first half, which is a shame - orion might be my favourite track from the album now. Gives a great change of pace and tone, which is fairly static earlier on. Not a single bad track Enjoy the lyrics, solid I will have to relisten to 'ride the lightning' because this might well become my favourite Metallica.

masterpiece, mooie themas en sterke instrumenten. Classic

Beste gitaren ooit

3/3 mastered

Brilliant!

Best album ever.

Album goes so hard. Not a dull moment, everything is great from start to end. Favorites are "Master of Puppets", "Disposable Heroes" and "Leper Messiah"

I have heard this countless times. It is peak heavy metal.

Masterpiece

Amazing

Stone classic.

"still looking for that wow" is what I said yesterday, and maybe is something I should say everyday since we have been given a WOW. Still not my favorite Metallica album, it's an easy five stars. This, along with many other Metallica albums, has a special place in my heart. This on in particular, I picked up my first CD at Half Price Books in Chicago. Listening to Battery in the car with Auntie Susan and family and having to turn it off after that song because I don't think anyone was a fan. But I also made a movie based on The Thing That Should Not Be when I was in highschool which was a mixture of me playing my electric drums, stevies guitar, and searching for where Dad was in the house. Master of Puppets is probably one of the best Metallica songs of their entire discography and only recently Lisa told me that its "Master of Puppets, I'm pulling your strings" not "is pulling your strings" so I'm still learning the intricacies of this band. Favorite Songs: Battery (that intro...), Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and Orion (an 8 minute instrumental that gets your head bobbing). Album Art: The Master of Puppets (perhaps the government? since that is a theme that carries into their next album) pulling the strings of all the disposable heroes (maybe veterans if you look closely at the dog tag on the front cross). ICONIC.

Truly epic. One of the great Metallica albums to be certain. Not sure where this ranks in the catalog for me but it's up there. Opens with one of my absolute favorite Metallica songs, "Battery." Love the acoustic guitar part, and then of course the explosion into electric sound. Some other classic hits on here too like the title track. This was a staple in the Metallica phase that Alex and I had, and I really can't in good faith give it less than a 4.5. I had to run it back today to see if it's a fiver, and on second listen I knew it had to be done. I know so many of these tracks very well, and to end up with 6 of the 8 staying in my playlist, it's gotta be a five from me. I have a feeling this would end up my number 1 or 2 Metallica album, up there with the Black Album and And Justice for All, we'll have to see when those pop up. Favorite tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Sanitarium, Leper Messiah, Orion. Album art: Definitely iconic, I've always loved this one. Great colors, like a sunset inn hell. Creepy puppet master pulling strings on the crosses in what seems to be a military memorial/graveyard. Someone much wiser than me will have to explain the political implications, if any. 5/5

amazing metal album, not even a huge metal fan but this album is GREAT.

I actually enjoyed that way more than I though I would It’s so easy for metal to be so generic and repetitive and while this album started out like that for me, by the end it definitely won me over with a lot more creative songs I think my favorite song was Orion, I really digged that 3/4 groove, reminded me of Pink Floyd and yeah the latter half of the album was a lot more likable to me, it felt more creative and experimental in the AC/DC vs Metallica argument, I’m always gonna pick AC/DC but still, Metallica has some neat stuff I can appreciate 9/10

Absolute masterpiece

Glorious!

It's up against tough competition but this is probably their best album. It contains an outrageous number of powerful and catchy riffs. I love the instrumentals and guitar solos that appear throughout the album and make use of the less common modes. I really enjoy the devastating, chugging riff on "The Thing That Should Not Be" that is so dark and heavy it has it's own event horizon. "Orion" is another highlight for me. An 8 and a half minute metal instrumental that is exciting and engaging all the way through and even has some delicate and vulnerable moments.

Amazing. Reminds me of the good parts of Middle School

Hard rock makes my rock hard

Amazing

Metallicas thrash metal masterpiece. Personally I prefer the black album but this hits harder and is a 5 star album.

Metallica was my first favorite band as a kid and will always hold a special place in my heart because of it. I'd personally put Ride the Lightning above this album but both are unimpeachable classics.

A classic heavy metal album. It sound like a tank.

Basically everybody's favourite thrash album

Well I’m no Metallica fan per se… always felt the they were a bit naff… but I grew up on a post Black Album Metallica - one where they were lost in self absorbed excesses and not the Metallica of Master of Puppets. Besides maybe the overwrought evil cackles at the end of the title track - listening to this album now with hindsight is this is unparalleled genre album - this is as Beatles as metal can get yet still retain its cred. It’s an opus of grand proportions - wonderful musicianship (except Lars - fuck Lars), and surprisingly lucid songwriting - even after all these years. There have been better metal songs and maybe one or two better albums - but none as influential and important as this one. Now with the benefit of time past - so far after almost 4 decades no one has made metal so good, accessible, yet still heavy and ballsy.

Very good

I was starting to think after around ~50 albums rated that the genre of metal was being forgotten about as I think we’ve only gotten a single other one so far (Black Sabbath). Thankful to be proven wrong here with MOP >:O >:O This album has so many definable characteristics. It is DYNAMIC in its instrumentation. The first thing you hear is Battery, with acoustic guitars that start to increase in harmonic complexity, adding harmony on top of harmony... until you get hit at 39 seconds in, and are given an EPIC soundstage on your ears. then at 1 minute in you get the ENERGY OF THE RIFFFFFFFFFFF >:O >:O And then you are set on a crash course where it’s hard to take a breath without hitting the pause button. I genuinely love this album and I think it's a masterpiece in not only the genre but in music as a whole. Metallica gets an interesting response these days from metal people as they are seen as generic compared to the breadth that the genre has expanded into, but their music is classic songwriting genius- track after track after track. Master of Puppets might be their magnum opus and is in the running for the magnum opus of the genre of metal. It is so dynamic, energetic, surprisingly approachable, monumental, and even catchy. After one listen through you will have parts that you remember. You will remember guitar parts that sound like a cat scratch or tires screeching on a road. You will remember vocal parts! That is so incredibly hard to do in metal, as most metal vocal parts are rhythmic and devoid of melodic qualities or obvious pitches. Somehow my biggest takeaway from this album has always been trying to figure out how a metal band from 1986 has the tracks Orion and Master of Puppets on one album. Both have so many emotions and standout variables for me- with distorted guitar chugfest sections, with soaring guitar solos that are still tasteful, fun offset rhythmic groovy parts (Orion at 2:12 specifically), and yet they are somehow introspective, contemplative, and still unrelenting and epic. This album was released March 1986 and only 6 months later the bus accident occurred where bassist Cliff Burton died at the age of 24. The section in Orion that starts at around the 4 minute mark is one that I’ve always shown to naysayers of the metal genre as an unquestionably brilliant testament that the genre can produce genius level music composition. That section starts with an emotional Burton bass line, that evolves into Bach-like lines at around the 5:40 mark (seriously listen to the bass at 6:00 - with headphones it is breathtaking) and then further evolves into more emotional playing – 6:33 the bass re-enters with distortion with Burton’s infamous no-plectrum technique and then syncs up with the lead guitars. Unquestionable. I’m always a little sad when I hear Orion because of this (and there’s the slightest hint of some chopped onions here as I write this on a Monday morning at 9:39am) but it usually doesn’t take long for me to remember how that song and this album are timeless and will be listened to forever. Easy 5/5 for me and possibly a 6/5.

Disposable Heroes ***** good idea. Álbum muito bom!

One of the definitive metal albums. I loved this and handed listened to the songs many times, and well again.

Síntese do metal em direção ao ápice.

I love Metallica.

No comments necessary.

Few albums did more to change the path of music, metal specifically, than this one. Amazingly one of the others was Black. Amazing.

Curious never heard of this ><

Possibly the best metal album of all time

Lotta great heavy tunes here. Masterful🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

The album that solidified Thrash as a force in Metal music. Wall to wall bangers. Aggressive, heavy, anti-war. Every time I listen to this I think what Metallica would've been if Cliff Burton hadn't died in a bus accident. || Favorite tracks: Orion and Damage Inc. Bass on Orion in particular goes hard.

another great album by Metallica, this album raise the roots of the modern metal

Quite frankly the best entry point to Metallica and their music. What more can be said about this excellent display of riffage, sheer tenacity, brute force and one of the four pillars of thrash metal being at their early, hungry best? A must listen for anyone who either love and hate Metallica and understand what they mean to not only the genre of metal but music as a whole. Excellent.

Hauntingly beautify. Battery / Master of Puppets is a strong 1-2 opener. Lots of energy throughout the album. Orion is a fantastic interlude so that we can finish out strong with Damage Inc. This is a low 5 for me

A metal masterpiece. RIP Cliff Burton

LOVE LOVE LOVE METALLICA!

Masterpiece

Metallica is the only metal band universally liked even among non-metal fans for a reason. They maintain a heavy sound without compromising the beautiful melodies or meaningful lyrics.

First of all, I’m not the biggest fan of metal. It’s not something I listened to growing up but as my palate expands I’m giving it another go. Having said that, I loved this album. It was cohesive, cinematic, and the musicianship was incredible. James Hetfield’s vocal delivery is supercharged and clear, Cliff Burton’s baselines are acrobatic and driving, Lars Ulrich’s drumming is precise and full of momentum, and Kirk Hammett’s lead guitar is melodic and virtuosic without being muddy. This album is cohesive and exciting despite its 54 minute running time.

One of my all-time favorite albums. The last great thrash album by Metallica. What other band plays music in 21/32 time signature at 200+ bpm? It's insane how clean Kirk and James' guitars are here. And most likely Lars' best drum work. This is a masterpiece of thrash metal and likely the very definition of it. I actually like James' later mature voice rather than his earlier voice, but the higher pitched/younger voice still fits well. My only criticism is the mixing could be better as I really wish I could hear Cliff's bass work more, but with decent headphones, you can hear it. But it's drowned out with speakers, which is sad. But not enough to not make it an instant 5 star album. Every song is memorable. RIP Cliff.

The five stars I wanted to give ...And Justice for All but couldn't. Might have something to say for listening to albums in order of release in cases where bands have more than entry in the book. This is the Metallica I expected and loved but I think I'm now far better equipped to dive back into Justice with this context behind me. What a massive fucking album though flipping heck.

Perhaps a little too metaphor driven, but a masterpiece nonetheless. I will suggest that it's a pretty standard formula of "angry verse, crunchy guitar, angry verse, witty chorus, squeely guitar, crunchy guitar angry verse, backed with aggressive bass and drum." I love this album, and it defined a genre, even if the formula exhausted itself. Callouts to Orion, Welcome Home, and Battery.

Classic album. Every song is a hit and pure energy building.

I can't even give this an honest review. It was one of the first albums I ever owned (about 30 years ago now), I've listened to it more times than I've had hot dinners, I've learnt the whole thing on guitar, I know every single song inside and out. It's legit the epitome of heavy metal, even of rock music in general. 5/5.

Great album, liked the atmosphere throughout the album. Having a poster of it as a teenager says enough and still like it.

Best Metallica album, rated previous Metallica albums as 4 (AJFA) and 3 (Black) so this should get 5.

Great classic thrash album, lots of nostalgia for me personally so this is an easy 5 as I grew up on these tunes. Still bangers.

Amazing!!!

An album that I have dipped in and out of over the years. I'm not a massive fan but I enjoy what I hear

What a ride!

The first time I've heared this album. Great! Should listen more Metallica.

Easily one of my all time favourites. Let’s GO!!!

Always love older Metallica! And this came up on the 3-year anniversary of my last show of theirs!

Excellent - every song a banger

I mean, c'mon.

I don't even need to listen to this to give it a 5/5... buuuuuuuut I'm still gonna listen to it anyway :D

Super fast, super powerful, with killer songwriting. Battery is a hell of an opener, and MoP is an all time classic track. Spectacular from beginning to end.

as good as I remember from 10 years ago

A metal masterpiece. A must listen for any fan of the genre. Highlighted songs: Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion

lurve metallica!

absolutely legendary. best thrash album of all time

I think I'd go to bat for this as the most essential and best Metallica album, definitely a classic, definitely belongs on the "must listen" list.

Love it

One of my favourite albums

Masterpiece

Um excelente album, destaco o Battery, o Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes e o Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Nota: 9/10

Perfect

biblical

Heard it a thousand times.

Great to listen, I recommend playing agressive Red dead redemption 2 gameplay while listening to it.

you KNOW it's a dang five

Masterpiece!

Ce classique !

Classic. One of the best by one of the best.

Gammal Metallica er gammal Metallica

Awesome thrash sound. Consistently hard and fast.

Masterpiece. What a ride. Headbangers dreamland.

BEST METAL ALBUM EVER. I'd give it six stars if I could.

Very good album

This rating was not pulling my strings

RIP Cliff who knows what may have been post And Justice For All. This album still slaps

I feel like I can understand people who don't like metal, but I really enjoy it. Metallica, especially, has a lot of symphonic and classical influences apparent in their music. Just look at a song like "Battery", or pretty much anything on this record. I'm not Metallica's biggest fan, but damn does this record rip. Favorite tracks: "Battery", "The Thing That Should Not Be", "Sanitarium"

S tier thrash album!

This album is awesome!

Bought this on vinyl back in the 80s trying to stay current. Never really got into it at the time, just wasn’t my jam, so it remains in excellent shape as I pulled it out for this exercise. Older me now does appreciate what the lads were trying to do. While still being quite thrash-y, this is very musical and well played. With this album, you can see where they came from, but also where they were going.

Achei que seria mais básico, e que teria mais hits. Não esperava apenas 8 faixas

Iconic

Gotta be honest, outside of Master of Puppets, it’s not as strong as I expect from Metallica. Still good, but not great.

Intensely formative for me at 13, not even CLOSE to my favorite Metallica anymore. Title track, however... that's where it all began for me and it still kicks ass. Can we talk about how Ride the Lightning isn't in the book though? What the fuck.

Got this album off Napster, you the best.

Good but maybe too much thrash?

A classic for a reason, hits hard, the band is at their hair-raising best!

(86/100)

Still great after 40 tears

A game-changing metal album that’s consistently strong throughout. Riffs galore - both heavy and fast. Songs about power, control, and corruption. Progressive elements with longer songs, varying tempos and time signatures, overall a big evolution in song-writing for the thrashers. Big sound. A great album and important album, though I think some of these elements were perfected on the follow-up And Justice For All.

I've come to the conclusion that Metallica are some of musics biggest aura farmers. Their rhythm section is incredibly straightforward, James's lyrics are entertaining but shallow, and the majority of their output is dramatic and serious. This album in particular has such a grand, spacious sound to it that makes you expect a long-winded story to play out. It's all about the guitars. It was always all about the guitars, the really fun melodies and riffs they'd be able to come up with, and how one would smoothly play into the other, ideally in some epic journey that never leaves you bored. And that's what this album (in regulated doses) achieves - bombastic entertainment. This is some of the most easily listenable metal you can find, and these riffs are downright delicious. If someone told me Kirk is the real hero of the band, I wouldn't be surprised; he seems like the one member that consistently had his shit together. And yet, I still can't say I love it, even with my newfound appreciation for Orion. I love guitars too, but I've been listening to them for most of my life, I can't live off from them alone, man. I need more than just 55 minutes of admittedly awesome guitar melodies. That eventually gets overbearing no matter how great your chops are. I need sauce. I need a rhythm section that's more than just functional. I need lyrics I can actually connect with. I need a version of Welcome Home (Sanitarium) that doesn't have its second half so good that it makes the first half feel like a chore to get through. I need riffs that aren't necessarily just earworms. I need music to not treat me with oven mitts, but hit me hard enough that I forget who I am for a second. I need my metal fix from literally anyone else but Metallica.

Super loud and hard hitting, the last 3 minutes of all the 8 minute songs are perfection.

As far as metal goes its probably as good as it gets. Took me back to being 15. Orion is great innit. I still prefer kill em all however

Part of my formative years. Doesnt have the same relevance to me as it did when I was 15. But still enjoyed. Can understand why Battery might turn people off, is a little too much as the start of an album. But I appreciate it Damage Inc and Disposable Heroes arent my fave Rest of the album is great though.

This is pretty cool actually. I think the guitar in this album is really good. It's not usually something that stands out to me, but I thought it really popped in this. I think I liked Battery best in the album, but it was pretty good on the whole. Very loopable but also very similar so the tracks do blend into each other. 4/5 stars.

Great natural flow to it

Any album that has master of puppets on it is brilliant, great album to give you energy when exercising. The songs at the end didn’t stick out as much to me, but was a well made album in every way

Why yes, I do like to rock.

I have already listened to this album before , when I was still in school and it's just such a classic heavy metal album solid 8/10

Classic Metallica

Throwback enjoyed this

I'm so glad I got this so soon after getting the self-titled record and feeling underwhelmed. Hearing this today was a reminder of why Metallica are so beloved. This is loaded with muscular riffs and lightning quick beats that help the songs build up to their crescendos masterfully. The album peaks by the time the second track concludes. That might sound like a big criticism, but the second track is "Masters Of Puppets", which is a perfect thrash metal epic. Everything that follows the title track is still excellent, so it is only a minor gripe. I'm not entirely sure if this is my favourite Metallica record (Ride The Lightning would potentially take that crown), but this is a damn fine album for sure.

Почти лучше чем St Anger

Great album each track flows so well together and despite being a longer album with not many songs it goes by fast. Just a really good album overall.

Not really my style of music but damn they’re good

It's so peak man like cmon

Good heavens this album is shrill! It's all snare and tinny guitars. Nasty riffs though, made "the face" many times. I legit don't know Metallica well, but decades on to an outside observer, The Black Album, Load, Reload etc don't seem that out of place - you can hear the same approach to harmony here, just less tight riffage and more melodies. Also, Lars really isn't great is he?

Good! enjoyed the listen and can definitely listen again although Im not a rock fan. For rock fans I expect it to be rated amongst the greatest so can't do worse than a 4

Awesome, not as good as the black album so I can’t give it the same rating but I do think this is an incredibly well made album. Very thematic with the lyrics which I love, great storytelling, as always well executed. They’re incredibly talented and it shows on this. “Master of Puppets” is one of their best songs for sure.

it does kind of blend together over the last few tracks, but overall, I understand the hype behind this album. driving drums, guitar & bass, plus actual depth the lyrics.

Can't decide if this or Ride the Lighting is my favorite album of theirs. I always found funny the outrage that came from the furning commercial with the Black Album because of the tempo of the songs. They were already laying the ground work for that transition since back here. The real outrage was Load and Reload, that's when I got into them, those are super run of the mill rock songs. Sad that this is Cliffs last album, his influence in the thick thrashy sound they made so pupular is forever missed. The titletrack has always been one of my top 3 Metallica songs, Battery is amazing, Orion is my favorite instrumental of theirs.

4.5 stars rather than 4

Fantastic album. No skips on this. Gets weaker towards the end, but still all bangers. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this over and over today, much needed after a couple of days of garbage.

METALLICAAAAA!!!!!!!! BAM BAMBMBAAAAMMMMM

MASTERRR MASTERRR gwn echt lekkere goede metal

Love me some classic metal

Like the beats and rythym in Leper Messiah.

In the cafeteria during ninth grade, before I'd discovered my high school friend group, I would sit at a lunch table crammed with greasy, pasty freshman boys. As I'd scarf down my sandwich, and I'd listen to these guys talk about obscene shit, like how hot Sarah Palin was, or the violent videos they'd found online, or Two Girls/One Cup. I hated it, but I was lonely, and these guys at least let me sit there. Many of these guys also loved metal, almost exclusively. And I think that association has always tainted metal for me—when I hear its "edgy" lyrics and its chugga-chugga rhythms, I can't help but picture these dweebs expectorating gobs of wonder bread while they bragged about how many times they could masturbate in one day. I'll never really be able to look past the goofy spookiness of metal (I mean... look at this album cover...), but I can appreciate Metallica in a way I struggle to appreciate most metal artists. The thing that has always set Metallica apart for me compared to a lot of metal is the sheer skill in their melodic writing. Rather than simple thrashing or anger, there's some real beauty within these tracks, some real knowledge about harmony too. I remember one of the pasty freshmen (his name was Mikey, and he was my least favorite) smugly proclaiming that "Metallica isn't even metal," which might be why I can stomach them. Huh.

Master of Puppets gotta be an easy 4.5 but they dont let me put up 4.5s best tracks: Master of Puppets (obviously), Sanitarium, The Thing That Should Not Be Battery is also quite good

phenomenal but not my favourite

peak, songs can be a bit long tho however still amazing

Listened before

De lo mejor de Metallica. Magia y velocidad.

This one's going to get me into a little bit of trouble, but I don't think this album is anywhere near the greatest metal album of all time like most people seem to think. Hell, it isn't even close to Metallica's best album (That being ...And Justice for All, even with it's complete lack of bass). Overall, it's a solid album. But the quality is a tad spotty for me. It starts off very strong with Battery and Master of Puppets. Two absolutely fantastic songs. The Thing That Should Not Be is a decent track, but repetitive and let down big time by Lars' drumming (Which honestly lets basically every album of Metallica's down, so not really unique to Master of Puppets, but there's just so much sloppy and frustratingly simple drumming on this album. For once I want Lars to be able to come up with a fill that's more interesting than just walking the toms or a basic single stroke roll, and to play with feeling instead of just holding the drumsticks with a deathgrip). It's frustrating because Lars' drumming makes up a huge aspect of Metallica and their sound. It's legitimately iconic, and they probably would not have been anywhere as big had he not been behind the kit making the music accessible. But I honestly feel like basically any other metal drummer could have done a better job and made every Metallica album better. Anyways, I'll try not to bitch about Lars as much going forward but god is it difficult when drums are generally the thing I pay attention to the most when listening to music (Particularly metal, a genre that is replete with drummers who could vie for the crown of greatest drummer ever). Onto the next song, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), which is another fantastic cut from the record. Great musicianship all around. I will say, when Metallica got past ...And Justice for All, I really felt like Kirk Hammet got extremely formulaic and repetitive with his guitar playing, but here it's just generally great, inspired riffs and playing all around. And Welcome Home/Disposable Heroes are great examples of that. Not to mention, having Cliff Burton's bass playing to play off of helps a lot. Just great basswork here. Disposable Heroes, despite my praise of it though, I do have some small quibbles with, particularly with some of the odd phrasing from Hetfield, along with some of the cleaner rhythm guitar going on feeling a little at odds with the heavier riffs from Hammet. Leper Messiah is probably the weakest track on the list barring The Thing That Should Not Be, and the biggest reason is again Lars, so many stilted little breakdowns and bad fills. There's some good in here, particularly when it speeds up and Hammet and Burton are allowed to really get heavy. Orion is a fantastic instrumental. Not much else to say there, although would have liked a little more distortion on the rhythm guitar earlier in the song. and finally Damage Inc. is better than I remember, with one of the better performances from Lars on the album, honestly. So yeah. I know I was far more negative on this album than my rating will suggest, because it really is a great album. Just in the grand scheme of Metallica's discography, thrash metal, and metal in generally, I honestly think this is one of the most overrated albums of all time. I do think my previous listen to this years ago is coloring my opinion of this album a bit, but I did enjoy it more this time around. TL;DR: Great album. Wildly overrated. Lars' drumming is horrifically bad.

It's definitely a chore, but not doing the dishes. More like cleaning your room. You don't absolutely love doing it in the moment, but after you feel fulfilled.

This is pretty peak “this”. It makes me laugh that basically every song has a fake out ending. The drumming pattern in the title track is a little awkward even though the song itself is admittedly an all timer.

I do get why it's a classic

I am more of a "classic rock" guy over metal, but I like it at times, and if you are going to like it, Metallica does it pretty darn good. For me, just for where my tastes sit it is a 3.5 but I'll round up as a nod to how well done this is. 4.

Hell yeah.

I think that for the first Metallica album I've ever listened to, I found it... well, honestly, Metallica's style—or the band itself—has never really caught my attention, but I think I found this really interesting and wild for someone who isn't familiar with them! I think I can see why they have such a huge fan base ;)

Honestly I listened to this one a lot and many will tell you it’s a masterpiece, and I think it had its highlights, but it wasn’t a front to back banger

I had seen the logo around town, but this was my first listen to Metallica: kinda hits a 14 year old perfectly and what an introduction to metal!

I thought the music itself was really cool, but the songs just began to blend together by the end of the album. The way the vocals were sung was also very much the same for each song. It was still enjoyable, though, especially in the gym.

Ovo je otprilike svjetlosnu godinu ispred svog metala osamdesetih. Opet nije meni najdraži stil metala ali je dobro bez ikakve sumnje. Samo mi malo dugo traje.

Loud and FAST. Forget heavy metal, this is speed metal. It’s funny, I respect the heck out of Metallica and I like some of their work quite a bit, but this album was a disappointment to me, even though I know it was widely considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums ever. I’d never listened to the whole thing before, so I was excited when it popped up. But I quickly discovered this was not for me. The tempo is so fast it feels like it eats the songs. I just can’t appreciate what they are doing because the guitar and drums are so accelerated. Maybe that’s why I personally like some of their later material better. So, objectively, this probably should be a a 4 or 5. But for me, it’s a 2. But because it is a pivotal and quite influential album, I have lt at least give it a 3. I won’t begrudge all the 4 and 5s out there. I get it. Just personal taste here.

Another light 9 but not a 10

Met grote afstand het beste Metallica album wat mij betreft en daarmee ook met afstand het beste trash metal album. Het blijft echter trash metal, beter dan dit wordt het gewoon niet.

A good album by Metallica, not my favourite.. I like the newer ones more 4/5

The titular song of this album is one of their best. And the album overall is really good. Nice

Liked it overall; guitar got heavy at times. And some songs carried on too long. Liked Disposable Heroes and Orion and the instrumental interlude builds in Battery and MoP.

Their biggest strength is their guitar solos. I love the solo in the middle of the title track. Ah, the guitar harmonies... Orion is another highlight.

I mean.... yeah it's probably Metallica's best album, but I found it lacking in a few ways. It definitely popularized thrash and pioneered a lot of themes so I'm scoring it highly, but I think there is better music from far-lesser known bands. Savatage put out some really great albums before their guitarist sadly passed away in the early 90s (his bro was in the band too and they became Tran-Siberian Orchestra)

These guys take themselves too seriously. None of these long-ass songs have long song vibes. It is fire though

Great to have the opportunity to listen to this album closely. been playing a game of ‘Thrash and…’ ‘Thrash and running’, ‘Thrash and looking through family photographs’ ‘Thrash and making dinner’ ‘Thrash and driving’. All provide a new way of seeing and speed of doing. The title track, Master of Puppets kinds of stands head and shoulders above the rest of the album, but others that stood out for me were Battery, Orion and Sanitraium. 4 Number tracks 8 Fave track 2 Master of puppets 20/04/26

Classic.

Had a wholesome moment in the barber where they played this album and everyone started to sing along. I’m old now, but I was so glad to see this was still a right of passage album for the youff.

A classic metal album. Some really iconic songs here like Battery, the title track and Disposable Heroes. My only problem here is that this album feels like it meanders a bit and I'm just not a huge fan of metal in general but it's still great album to listen to even if you're not a metal fan 8/10 Favourite: Master of Puppets Least Favourite: Welcome Home (Sanitorium)

Heard it before. Metallica is very nostalgic to me in general and their music basically has a calming effect on me. Master of Puppets is an absolute classic. RIP Cliff \m/ 4/5

Great, not really into metal but it was fire

I'm very thankful for this album list. It has introduced me to music I otherwise would have never listened to. Metal is a genre I never dared dip my toe into, being a lover of the indie/pop genre and constantly seeking out a chill song. As time has progressed and the longer I have been with my husband (an avid metal/rock fan), the more the metal genre has grown on me. Funny enough, my favorite elements of indie were always the drums and guitar - something that Metallica (or metal in general) does really well. I enjoyed listening to this album more than I expected. The instrumentation felt tight, and well thought out. The aggression in the drums was energizing, the guitar riffs gnarly. This album was perfect for a gym day. Favorite tracks: Master of Puppets Disposable Heroes Orion

Great record, couple of true bangers, but some duds as well.

Battery - 4/5 Master Of Puppets - 4/5 The Thing That Should Not Be - 4/5 Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - 4.5/5 Disposable Heroes - 3.5/5 Leper Messiah - 4/5 Orion (Instrumental) - 3/5 Damage, Inc - 4.5/5

7/10 Favorite: Master of Puppets

Master of Puppets is, needless to say, a powerful, aggressive, and tightly constructed album. Every riff is sharp and precise, and the band’s performance feels incredibly solid. Battery and Disposable Heroes are my favorites for their intensity and energy.

One of Metallica’s top 3. It gets you going.

1 song (Battery)-not bad, but to long for me ❤️2 song (Master Of Puppets)- well thats hit obviously, surprisingly cool solo 3 song (The Thing That Should Not Be)- well yeah this thing I honestly don't wanna add to my playlist, just not my cup of tea I guess ❤️4 song (Welcome Home)- nice catchy intro, my god really great solo and vocals. Absolute peak, definitely adding this to my playlist ❤️5 song (Disposable Heroes)- very heavy intro, lowkey hard to listen cuz I rarely listen to thrash metal, but still way better than 3rd song for me. like this part: Back to the front You will do what I say, when I say Back to the front You will die when I say, you must die Back to the front You coward You servant You blind man well really great lyrics 6 song (Leper Messiah)- nice solo and riff overall, heavy shit ❤️7 song (Orion)- catchy an kinda mystic intro. Oh I really like this ,already added to my playlist. Peaceful. And ooooh what a solo, great recording 8 song ( Damage, Inc. )- mystic intro and heavy start ,equally as the ending

Bat-Ter-Rey!

bro ofc i love this one

Mag Black Sabbath mehr

3,5 Highlights: Battery, Master of Puppets

As someone who really loves 70s prog rock, I see a lot of similarities on the technical ability, syncopation, and cool time-signature front; for that I enjoyed this. However, each song felt barely distinguishable from the last, even if they were pleasant to listen to

3/30/26. Not a big metal guy but Metallica stands on their own. Love the complex songs and soft/loud dynamic, making their music progressive in the genre.

A great album I normally don’t listen to Metallica but every now and again is nice

This album sounds the way incense and blacklight posters smell, not in a bad way Battery is a great opener Master of Puppets is one of my favorite bridges they have done. 8 and a half minute song and it doesn't feel too long. So many good guitar solos The guitars on Disposable Heros are soo good The songs start feeling very monotonous but only because James Hetfield lacks any sort of dynamics Fade outs are so lame. Write an ending to your songs Sanitarium ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Love the outro on Orion, the rest of the song is kinda meh I like the ambient opener of Damage, Inc. into the really chuggy main sound. The whispered "damage incorporated" thing so many times is cheesy.

I liked this one more than ...And Justice For All though it still suffers from the same issues. Tracks linger a bit too long, Hetfield isn't my favorite singer, and the longer the album goes on, the more it seems to all blend together. But between the titular track, “Welcome Home,” and “Orion” I found myself nodding along. And though I don’t often pay attention to lyrics, I admit the lyrics to “Master of Puppets” stand out. I'll give it 4/5.

A solid metal album. Definitely felt like some songs were long for the sake of being long and could have been trimmed down. Loved all of the creative guitar solos though, they never disappointed.

Excellent gym album

Lowkey relentless.

There's so much texture and atmosphere that I overcame my aversion to James Hetfield's yarling

This goes pretty hard

Good album. Havent listened to in it in years, but its better than i remember! Good fun!

Knew a few songs. Hadn't listened to the others. Absolute bangers on sanitarium and master of puppets

A true metal classic. The songs are long and tell you a little story every time and yet never too boring (sometimes it's a bit too much yeah). It's also really energyzing. Favorite Songs: Master of Puppets ; Welcome Home ; Leper Messiah ; Orion

Has some great songs on here!

A classic with no skips

Stonking good thrash again. The remaster album is too clean, though. But the bass comes out better than on Justice, which may also be about being pre- and post-Cliff Barton.

I’m not a huge metal fan but this album is pretty great. This and Ride the Lightning are the Metallica albums I enjoy a lot and would listen to on my own

guitar go brrrrrrr

🤘 Got a little repetitive towards the middle, but it's Metallica. Master of Puppets alone makes this album worth it.

Great album, I love the blend of melodic riffs and thrash. Pacing wise, I think ideally I'd switch the last two tracks. The journey that Orion takes you on would be a perfect finale

One of the joys of the last six months for me has been getting into Metallica, who I’d previously thought were beyond me. They have taken me from feeling slightly detached toward Metal to straightforwardly loving it. Going backwards from the black album (I know, I know) I’m enjoying even more hearing them in this genre defining mode. It’s no less atmospheric than them making pop music, but there is a definite edge to the relentless crunching, pummelling and chanting. In both modes it stands out to me how focused the band are on making sure a bright melody is never too far away from poking through the mix. It’s a fantastic mixture of fuzzy, crunchy and bubbly. I’m a fan!

Best Track - "Master Of Puppets"
