Reviews (page 4 of 13)

This album is off to a strong ass start. Sonically, this is strong showing of tight dynamics, great tone blending, and overall sonic texture. This is a high watermark of that late grunge 90s sound. Black Hole Sun is a single that is set up perfectly by the other songs before it. Spoonman I think is not a great song but I don't hate it. The Day I Tried To Live is a killer song. The back end is a little long for my taste, but this is a killer record.

Just fantastic. I love spoonman in particular.

Great indie music. Their Black Hole Sun album I knew. 5 stars. BLACK HOLE SUN WONT YOU COME WASH AWAY THE RAIN

Absolute banger, first to last song.

One of the grunge masterpieces. RIP Chris

Awesome album! Music videos are cool too!

Chris Cornell, man. Tremendous album with every track standing out in its own way.

A classic staple of grunge. Chris Cornell really was an incredible vocalist.

BÄÄÄÄÄSTAAAA 😍😍

What. A. Voice. Brilliant, brilliant album. Instrumentals are on point. Feel varies wonderfully from track to track. The marriages of prog rock & grunge and psychedelia & grunge are incredibly welcome throughout. But...come on. We all know that it's Chris Cornell's voice that makes this project. And all Soundgarden projects. Favorite tracks: Let Me Drown, Limo Wreck

Great album, really rocks.

Banger after banger after banger. This album don't miss.

Not a huge fan but it is a solid album

5 Star

In lieu of Chris Cornell’s untimely suicide, listening to Soundgarden has become bittersweet. Nevertheless, it is difficult to rate one of the greatest grunge albums of all time. What I appreciate about Soundgarden is their use of psychedelic and hard rock motifs that pay homage to their influences in a way that is easily heard. Of course the music itself is phenomenal, but the real centerpiece is Chris Cornell’s magnificent vocals. He was truly one of the most gifted voices of grunge.

Legend album. RIP Chris Cornell

It seems weird to say this since I gave Ten a two, but Superunknown is a great album. Honestly, Chris Cornell is like Eddie Vedder if he was a good singer, way less whiney while still having the same low voice. The worst song here, ‘Half’, is two minutes, and even then it’s not really bad. Otherwise, this album is incredibly consistent, especially since most of its songs reach at least 5 minutes. The singles are just inarguable, and a lot of the other songs are amazing, too, such as ‘Let Me Drown’, ‘Head Down’, and ‘Like Suicide’. Just go listen to it; it’s one of the great grunge records and one of the best double albums in rock.

This record is a landmark. After years of listening it's actually the slower, darker songs that still stand among the best songs I know. The Day I Tried To Live might just be my favourite songs of all time. Those amazing drums of Matt Cameron that keep pushing the song forward combined with the low sounds of the bass. The sliding guitar sounds of Kim Thayil and the out of this world voice and lyrics by Cornell. It's a league of its own. But also some of the 4th of July, Head Down and painful last song Like Suicide.

Love Soundgarden Spoonman is excellent always a favourite

What more can be said that hasn't been already about Soundgarden or just Chris Cornell in general. Legendary band, legendary album.

Love. Chris Cornell and company.

Pivotal and relevant. RIP Chris.

I can't claim to be objective about this - this was one of the albums that hugely influenced me as a teen and I still know practically every note. It's not *completely* perfect - one or two songs might go on a little longer than needed, but it's so close as to make no difference. The great songs are flawless, and the majority are really, REALLY good. Incredible vocals and lead guitar, brilliant variety in songs, huge production. Black Hole Sun and the other singles are quite well known, but 4th of July, Limo Wreck and Fresh Tendrils are also some of my favourite songs ever. I mean, OK, 'Half' is still awful, but you've gotta let the bassist sing one. Right?

no notes

Just a good album.

This is peak grunge. Talent, creativity, and production come together for a perfect album. Such a shame the Clinton's and the CIA had to offer Chris Cornell as a blood sacrifice as he uncovered their child trafficking operations.

All time bad ass album. One of my favorites from the 90’s or any decade.

Chris Cornell is the greatest grunge singer and of the greatest male singers of all time. Love the dark production and Eerie lyrics on this album. Killer riffs, licks and choruses. I think Matt Cameron is also my new favourite drummer. This also my new favorite grunge album.

Timeless

There is a great comfort in Chris Cornell's voice and in Soundgarden's music. Chris' passing made the comfort melancholic and now we're left to feel joy and grief simultaneously. Superunknown is an amazing album from one of the most influential bands of the 90's/2000's. Personally, I think it's essential.

One of my favorite grunge albums of the 90s. Chris Cornell had such an incredible voice, and there are just so many hits on this record

A very strong album, 'Black Hole Sun' is a must listen

Chris Cornell. Such power. Such gravellyness. Such angst.

The joy of this project is discovering unexpected gems - here, then, is one of those - powerful, impactful, catchy rock, oftentimes haunting, others raw and visceral, Soundgarden certainly had it. The album improved with every listen. Artists at the top of their game.

Own on Vinyl

One of the finest rock records of all time. Slabs of sabbath like riffs, brilliant songwriting and that voice. Awesome.

Great album, classic grunge, Soundgarden was one of the best grunge acts. Chris Cornell's vocals are unmatched, he can just belt out songs no problem. Black Hole Sun was a huge hit, but Spoonman, with its odd time, Limo wreck, Kickstand, fell on dark day were all great songs

RIP Chris Cornell

I can't believe that I have never listened to this album. Black Hole Sun was one of the first songs I ever really loved. I remember when I started getting more into music, I would look for this album and would usually find "Down on the Upside" and was worried it didn't have Black Hole Sun on it. Maybe I would've been a whole different person if I had taken a leap of faith on Soundgarden and not "Mellon Collie..." Anyway, almost 30 years later, I finally listen to Superunknown, and yes, I love it. There are some moments on here that are a little "Triple M" dad rock (at least now in 2023). What sticks out to me on this album is the performances and the recording. Kim Thayil is an amazing guitarist that really colours this album. And of course what can I say about Chris Cornell. Favourites: Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried to Live, Limo Wreck, Head Down, Fell on Black Days

Can’t believe it’s been so long since he passed. His voice was amazing. RIP Chris Cornell

superb

Been listening to this album since it came out

This was great. I'd always thought of "Black Hole Sun" Soundgarden and "Spoonman" Soundgarden as being different eras throughout the bands life, so colour me surprised when one came on directly after the other. Chunky without sacrificing melody. And that VOICE.

One of the best albums of the 90s and easily as good as Nevermind, Ten, and Dirt. Classic.

Emblematic of popular rock at the time: blending sludgy production with addictive hooks and melodies. "The Day I Tried To Live" is my personal anthem.

This album is a classic from my own formative years. Chris Cornell's voice is one of the greatest of all time. Black Hole Sun was one of my favorite songs in high school. The Day I Tried To Live hits me different now. Love that one. And of course, Spoonman :)

esqueça tudo, grungezao sempre em bom tempo

- One of the best grunge albums of all time - Chris Cornell has an incredible voice - Not much else to say other than incredible - Let Me Drown, Spoonman, Fell On Black Days

Absolute wereldplaat.

I let out an audible "ooof" of excitement when this album popped up. I will always be so captivated by Soundgarden. This time period was a goldmine for music- Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. Despite the common thought that the first two are probably higher rated acts than the rest, I think this collection of 5 bands dance around being the best group depending on the day, and Soundgarden pretty often is that band on that day for me. "My Wave" is such a cocky fun energy track. To me it feels like you're with your friends and about to show up to that after school flagpole main event fight but you're also a person who has the wit to know that there is an alternative to fighting, and you are only going to resort to whooping someone's butt if you really need to. What a weird concept for a song (or at least my version of it). "Take, if you want a slice If you want a piece If it feels alright Don't come over here Piss on my gate Save it just keep it off my wave" (check out that bass groove change from 4:00 to the change at 4:15) "Fell on Black Days" is one of the most important songs for me in my life. Maybe a top 5 or top 10 song of all time in my ever-adjusting list. I loved the emotionally grey / melancholic guitar riff from my first listen (the music video is killer and reflects this emotion so well) and I have played it thousands and thousands of times trying to better get inside of it. This is also the first song that I ever sought to learn to sing while playing guitar. I was changing from a metal shredder boy into a singer songwriter man and this was such a wonderful segue piece for that. It is inherently an incredibly hard song to sing while playing though hahaha. "Superunknown" features such a wide and impressive vocal performance. He just howls over the top of the band- like he's on top of a car in Mad Max just rampaging through the desert and screaming his way through the wastes. "Black Hole Sun" is just as important for the grunge rock scene as any other grunge track from this time. Maybe not as universally loved as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" though but to me it is equally as good. "Spoonman" - what a weird, weird, speedy, eclectic piece featuring a famous street musician who would play spoons on his knees. this was originally written for the soundtrack for the movie "Singles" which is an amazing amalgamation of 90s rock talent. "The Day I Tried To Live" is so dynamic and the weird real-yet-surreal music video accompanies the vibe of the song perfectly. How great is that under-the-current-of-the-waves bass line? I always thought this song was about depression and how every day is a battle, and how dreams can be so wonderful and there can often be such a comedown upon waking up and realizing that that wasn't reality- this is. I love how it starts to give you another verse at around 3:30- only for you to get pulled back into a chorus and yelling "SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN BED". It's such a perfect blend of lyric intention, vocal affect, and music. This is one of my favorite driving songs. "4th of July" is one of the most underrated rock songs of all time. That riff is so stupidly heavy. It's like Soundgarden decided to give us all of these amazing diverse riffs in this album, like the clean melancholy of "Fell On Black Days" and the weirdly optimistic riff in "Black Hole Sun" and then they say "hold on, here's the heaviest riff you're going to hear for the next few decades in the middle of all of that". Listen to the SLUDGE in the guitars. It crawls at you like a monster in a horror movie- pulling itself through mud and blood and who knows what else to get to its' next victim. How incredible is this album cover? Stunning visual emotion. I love seeing movement in album covers. I was really saddened by the death of Chris Cornell. Gab and I were fortunate to see him twice- once as a solo act in July 2007 (our first concert date), and later with Soundgarden (with Alice in Chains) on May 18 2013 and they were incredible- a dream come true to see them. He died 5 years later to the day of the 2nd time we saw him and it really hurt me. I don't usually idolize a lot of celebrities but the few that I do I really look up to them and he was (is) on that short list. Music lives forever though! His solo album is kind of a secret treasure chest of good songs that many people don't know about. This album makes me feel so much. Easy 5/5 for me and most likely on my top 10 albums of all time.

Album 17 of 1001 Soundgarden - Superunknown Favorite Track : Rating : 5 / 5 They hit it from the first beat of the first track. I know of Soundgarden, of course. Listened to them on the radio in the 90s, but have never sat and intentionally listened. Had me some flashbacks to listening to 99X, here in Atlanta, back in the 90s, I felt it. This is a good representation of that moment in time. Good rock. Enjoyable, all the way through.

Any excuse to listen to this masterpiece. Big shout out to the guy in my highschool algebra class who turned me on to soundgarden. Fucking phenomenal grunge

Classic grunge. This is one of the albums - along with Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten - that moved grunge from the Pacific Northwest into the mainstream. Singles such as Spoonman, Fell On Black Days, and Black Hole Sun propelled the album up the charts and are still mainstreams of Alt Rock Stations and classic rock stations alike.

black hole sun won’t you cum 😦

Suitable for a solo walk in the city!

First things first, let's get the obvious out of the way: Chris Cornell's voice is incredible. He had one of the greatest rock voices of all time, and there were moments while listening to this album where his voice alone gave me chills. I had never listened to Superunknown before, but I was alive in the 90's, so of course I know (and love) Black Hole Sun. That was the only song I was familiar with going into this. It turns out that as much as I love Black Hole Sun, it's not even the best song on the album, at least in my opinion. There were a few songs I was kind of indifferent toward, but also several that blew me away and that I have been listening to on repeat. If I could give half-stars, I'd probably go with a 4.5/5, but as it is, I'm going to round up. I doubt I'll listen to the entire album again, but enough of the songs (over half) are in my regular rotation now that I have no qualms with giving it a 5. Standout Tracks: "Mailman," "Fell On Black Days," "Limo Wreck," "The Day I Tried To Live"

The sounds of my youth!

Nearly a perfect album. Wide range of sounds but mostly within the Grunge family.

This album came out when I was in grade school. I remember loving the single Black Hole Sun. This is one of the many albums that contributed to my love of heavy guitar riffs against an angsty, pain-ridden lyrical background of soul filled songs to fall deep into. I count myself lucky to grow up in such an era. This album gets all the bananas, maybe some will be left over for tomorrow's music.

For a long time, I disliked Soundgarden. Partially due to their popularity (yeah, I was one of those guys), and partially because they sparked the creation of many shitty grunge/rock bands. Those are both childish reasons to dislike a band (I was barely a teen when this album came out). Listening to this album as a middle-aged man, I get it. It rocks. I guess my head and heart needed to mature a bit before I could enjoy this record. My favorite song from this album is Kickstand. It is almost a punk song. 5 out of 5 stars (mostly because this album is iconic)

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to rock your socks off because we've got a real gem here. Superunknown, the iconic album by Soundgarden, is an absolute masterpiece that deserves a five-star rating and then some. Let's start with the man himself, Chris Cornell. I mean, come on, his voice is a generational talent. If there was a Mount Rushmore of rock singers, his chiseled chin and chiseled pipes would definitely be up there. And that's not even getting into the incredible range and power of his voice, which can soar to the highest heights and plunge to the deepest depths with ease. But let's not forget about the guitar work. Holy shredding, Batman! The riffs and solos on this album are out of this world. Kim Thayil, you are a guitar god among mortals. And the rhythm section? Don't even get me started. Matt Cameron is one lucky drummer to have played for both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, and he brings a thunderous energy to every beat. And can we talk about "Black Hole Sun" for a minute? That song just fits perfectly into this album like a glove made of velvet and thunderbolts. The haunting melody and chilling lyrics make it an instant classic, and it's no wonder that it's become one of the most iconic songs of the '90s. I used to think it was just okay, but after hearing it in the context of Superunknown, I now appreciate it on a whole new level. And don't even get me started on "Spoonman." That driving beat and funky rhythm make me want to jump up and dance like a maniac. If you're not tapping your foot or banging your head to this song, then I don't know what to tell you. In conclusion, Superunknown is a must-have album for any rock fan. It's got everything you could ever want: killer vocals, mind-blowing guitar work, and a rhythm section that will make your heart race. So crank up the volume, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to rock out like it's 1994 all over again.

track 1 gud when like its 2.33 mins in track 6 vocals bosh track 7 g tier

Vettig, stevig, goed

Chris Cornell is a musical god. I love everything the man ever did and I will always wish that I had gotten the chance to see him before he died. This is just a perfect album, "Fell On Black Days" is the third most popular song on the album, but is by far my favorite on the album. "The Day I Tried To Live" would be my second favorite. "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" are obviously fantastic as well. It's just great. I want to talk more about it, but when I get too deep into the lyrics and symbolism of this album it makes me a little sad. I just can't praise the artistry and lyricism of Chris Cornell enough. He was a master of music and is dearly missed. Easily a 5 star album!

High notes on mailmen are superb. Chris Cornell has a powerful voice. Like this more than the Nirvana alblum we listened to. Black Hole Sun is such a classic. Spoonman spoons.

Hard rock bangaz. Inject into my veins

I've loved this record ever since it came out when I was still in junior high. I enjoy it no less today. I often go back and forth on whether I like Superunknown more or Badmotorfinger. Superunknown is definitely more tame, but some of the melodies are so much darker that it's a no-less entertaining album. Limo Wreck is still a song that gives me goosebumps every time; such a heavy verse, and Chris Cornell's vocals just absolutely soar in the chorus. Can't say enough good things.

Haven't listened to this album in forever. It was great. I don't quite connect with it to make it a 5/5, but it's close. 4.5/5

Goddamn masterpiece

No matter how loud this is played it can always go louder.

No one sings like you anymore, Chris Cornell

This is a great, classic album. And I don't even think it's their best one. Badmotorfinger gets the nod, but just by a hair. It was such an groundbreaking album and this album just built upon it.

Brilliant, and timeless

Discazo que vengo escuchando hace banda.

The first time I ever heard a Soundgarden song was when Weird Al used a snippet of 'Black Hole Sun' in 'Alternative Polka' on his 1996 album Bad Hair Day. That would be my only exposure to them until probably later in the 90's when I would hear 'Black Hole Sun' on the local alternative rock radio station. I thought 'Black Hole Sun' was a great song, and I enjoyed how it was heavy but also slow and beautifully belted out by Chris Cornell. Fast forward to 2003. One morning, my parents found two CD cases (you know, the kind where you could stash a few dozen CD's and keep it in your car) in our yard. We had no idea where they came from, and we really didn't have a reasonable way to try to track down the owner. We figured a pissed off girlfriend had probably tossed her boyfriend's music collection out of the window as a means of revenge. Since we had no way of tracking down the owner, my parents let my brother and I keep whatever CD's we wanted, and one of the CD's I kept was Soundgarden's Superunknown. I can't remember the circumstances that led to my first listening of it, but I was blown away. I remember that this was the first time I had ever listened to an album and thought "I don't want to skip a single track on here. All of these songs are great." I remember being particularly blown away by 'Spoonman' and its insane drumming and use of spoons as percussion. Almost exactly 20 years after my first listen, I was delighted when this album came up for me today. I haven't intentionally listened to any songs on this album in several years, but it still holds up. Chris Cornell's ability to croon in a brooding manner still solidifies him as one of the best rock vocalists of all time, and his suicide makes the music on here about 10x heavier than when it was first released. Each song manages to have that heavy, grungy feel, but in its own unique way. The singles from this album still hold up, but 'Limo Wreck' and 'Let Me Drown' are gems too. This album is just expertly crafted in every way, and it's still wonderful to listen to.

No one sings like Chris Cornell anymore. It's instantly recognizable, its range is insane, it's powerful, raw, and just leaves you in awe. So, so good. Besides that, the rest of the record is grunge music at its finest. There's no filler here, every song packs a punch - whether it's a straight up face punch like Spoonman or The Day I Tried to Live, or a more subtle jab like Limo Wreck or 4th of July. There's a range of sounds, but everything is peak grunge.

Fantastic album, all time grunge classic

This was on my extracurricular list until I realized it was already in the 1001, so the timing is pretty interesting. It's a lot to take in, for sure, but this is an extraordinary album. Peppered with influences, in a league of its own — the performances and songwriting are masterful. Cornell has everything you could want in a hard-rock vocalist, and he never found the balance between his wailing high end and rich baritone (?) more adeptly than on this album. Matt Cameron is a beast on drums, Kim Thayill's guitar is massive and the riffs are superb. I think it's really a 4.5 for me, just for its sheer density of material, but you'll not find a better album in this genre. Maybe because this carves out a special prog-heavy-classic-psychedelic-rock niche for itself. Great lyrics, too. This album kills.

Classic yet overlooked grunge album Choice cut: My Wave, Fell On Black Day, Head Down, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman

I love this record, it's the sort of album Beavis and Butthead would argue "kicks ass" and they would be right. They toured these tunes and then worked on them as a collective and it shows. It's a bit creepy, its a wonderful expression of the American dysfunction emerging in the early nineties, this is all free trade agreements, towns closing, work going off shore. The thing that is exceptional is how exceptionally dark things were getting, a portend for where they are are now as a country. I love Cornell's voice, Cameron's drum sound kicks and kicks hard. The two guitars crunch, no doubt Dan Auerbach spent a lot of time listening to this record. The biggies are deservedly big and don't need me to explain their greatness. Mailman, My Wave are brilliant, Head Down is psychedelic as fuck. A brilliant band album, they are all in there swinging and swinging hard.

Finally another album I own! (3rd so far, and first in ages.) That said, it’s a long time since I listened to all of it. So I was excited and curious: would it live up to my memory? Would I discover that the songs between the big favourites are all filler? As soon as I put it on (walking to the shops) I was launched into gear, trying not to look like an idiot head banging down the street. Listening in the car with my son, the epic songs just kept coming, right through to the end. Sounds as fresh, as heavy, and as awesome a mix of accessible and interesting as ever. This album is even better than I had remembered. I had guessed four stars, but this one absolutely earns FIVE STARS from me.

I first heard Soundgarden watching rage at about 2am in late 89 or early 90. They immediately caught my attention. When Badmotorfinger was released in the first blast of mainstream grunge in Aug/Sept of 91, I was hooked. I played that record grey, and collected all of their back catalogue. The heaviness and innovation of the riffage, along with an embrace of guitar noise instead of the typical shredding that was all over 80s metal, was thrilling. But it was Chris Cornell’s voice that really grabbed me. It’s hard to think of another vocalist of the age that could match his range and intensity. I saw them at Selina’s in early 1994 (when Superunknown was in the can but not yet released). I was sceptical to see whether he match the intensity of the records live. And he sure could. I walked out amazed. There are certainly live recordings from later in his life when you could hear the damage of thirty years of hard use in his voice, but in 1994 he was at the height of his powers. And he sure could write a song. Critical response to Soundgarden differs wildly. Some condemn them as dumbed-down metal, full of clichés and nonsense. Personally, I think they often try to subvert the tropes of metal (cf ‘Big Dumb Sex’ from Louder Than Love, which I’m pretty sure is parody. I used to play that song at Scratches at very high volume when tire kickers wouldn’t leave the store well after closing time). Bootleg recordings suggest that they were aware how ridiculous the genre they worked in could be, and maintained a sense of humour about that, but were simultaneously aware of the power of the form. Soundgarden are generally a metal band I can listen to without feeling stupid. The art-metal of their early records has evolved to a much more melodic form. There are proper tunes here, and some stomping playing. It is produced to a high shine. This is an intentional masterwork, a sprawling and ambitious double-album. This inevitably suggests that maybe a few songs could be trimmed, but the high points are monumental. It is difficult album in some ways, pretty dark in tone and largely humourless, and driven by depression and anxiety. But the singles are all amazing, and many of the album cuts are also highly listenable, if you like this kind of thing. I have to give special mention to Matt Cameron. The drumming on this album is phenomenal. Given their tendency to play in weird and/or changing time signatures, his ability to keep songs driving forward with a constancy that can make a 9/8 almost sound like a 4/4 is genius! While possibly not the most important album in grunge (surely that must be Nevermind), I think this is the artistic highpoint of both Soundgarden and the genre. And one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Five stars for me.

one of my favorite LPs, though for Soundgarden I usually go for Badmotorfinger or Louder Than Love. Utterly original, which is difficult to do within the constraints of hard rock. Finest rhythm section since Led Zeppelin or Cream. Not a dull moment.

A M A Z I N G

Not sludgy per se but sludgier than I expected. Pleasantly surprised.

Dark, thumping, raging rock. Some absolutely belting riffs decorate this epic. 5/5

Legendary sounds from this band presented on the album. Tracklist feels strange. From the day I tried to live and spoonman this album has amazing grunge tracks.

Heavy as fuck, dark and twisted

I miss Chris Cornell

Good stuff

A powerhouse of an album. Chris Cornell was one of a kind.

Soundgarden is great. I grew up with this album. My Wave, Fell On Black Days, Black Hole Sun, and The Day I Tried To Live Spoonman, of course. I'm tired of this song, but there is no doubt of its popularity.

Top 20, maybe too 10 album for me

Reminds me of Good and bad of high school

Chris Cornell is criminally underrated. To me Soundgarden is every bit as good as nirvana.

Can’t go wrong with classic 90s alt rock

This album is a belter. Reminds me of good times. Songs of note: Black Hole Sun Spoonman Let Me Drown is a brilliant opener. Love the drums, the driving basslines and Chris Cornell’s vocals are iconic. Absolutely one of my top 100 albums.

Classic, not one I would have listened to all the way through without this, but I'm glad I did! Spoonman and the peerless black hole sun are the best known, but every track has its own charms. Loved it

It's difficult to describe how important this record was to a 15-year-old me. The angular rhythms, Chris Cornell's growl-into-a-wail, it all just made sense to me. Still does. I haven't listened to this record in years, but man, these tracks still kill. I'd say I'm biased based on my youth, but I revisited another album that was important to me when I was younger (Franz Ferdinand's self titled), and that one didn't hold up. Everything about this one still works for me. Favorite tracks: "Limo Wreck", "The Day I Tried to Live", "My Wave", "4th of July"

RIP Chris Cornell

Wauw…..

Loved it, already knew the biggest hits from the album but hadn't heard many of these songs like Fell on Dark Days!

有几年不听垃圾摇滚了,又脏又重,有内味了,ROCK!硬朗的人声,喧嚣的乐器,起飞~

Un álbum lleno de energía y potencia.

It's a great album, heard it plenty of times.

Incredible sonic voyage from start to finish. This album was a massive paradigm shift for Soundgarden and forever cemented their place in rock history.

Dijk van een Album! Fell on Black Days, Spoonman maar vooral Black Hole Sun. manmanman. Episch RIP cornell

One of the Mount Rushmores of grunge. Especially chilling final track given Chris Cornell’s passing a few years ago. RIP.

Perfect

Гранж и гранж

Honestly thought I would hate this album, mostly based on the cover art. Being uninitiated with Soundgarden, I thought it was going to just be bad screaming and obnoxiously loud instrumentals, but wow, did I wind up loving this. Great, great vocals on this album, and the entire thing was just what I needed this morning: some fantastic grunge rock and roll. Even though it was over an hour, I never got tired, as the quieter moments intertwined nicely with the louder sections. Great variety that shows these guys know how to make a comprehensive album.

Classic innit

Soundgarden's best album, and defines an entire decade of music. Every single track is solid - 5/5

Excellent grunge. Thought I'd like it based on the tracks I knew but the whole album exceeded my expectations. Not sure why I never really took the time to listen to more Soundgarden before. I'm giving it 4.5 stars, but heck, I'll round up as a 'pleasantly surprised' bonus. SPOONMAN!

Not only is this Soundgarden’s best album, I would say it would have the genre’s tour de force if it wasn’t for Nevermind that simply got there first. Regardless, the album is loaded with original and creative tracks that have become the signature music of the era (and still do very well today, thank you very much). When I fall on black days, this album knows how to pick me up. I will also note my favourite tracks are not your Black Hole Suns, but rather the songs at the album's end (4th of July, Half, Like Suicide). It is as if, by that stage of the album, Soundgarden stopped caring about the hit factor and was just producing groovy (if melancholy) music. P.S. Chris Cornell: what a voice! Probably one of the best modern male singers of recent times.

Rock n roll at its finest

Possibly the greatest album of the 90s? Definitely the best of the big 4 grunge bands and the best grunge album ever. Just an all-around kick-ass album. 9-10/10

Soundgarden <3

It’s hard for me to be objective about ‘Superunknown, an album I listened to religiously as a teenager. Personal bias aside though, it’s honestly great, and despite its 70-minute length, it’s strangely concise, probably owing to the deliberately polished production that still manages to retain the bands trademark heavy rock sound, without sacrificing their raw edge and grim, despairing outlook on life. There are genuinely few weak spots to be found, and it’s one of those records that gets better the longer it goes. It’s up there with the best of the 90s grunge era albums, and a genuine counterpoint to the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, in that this a band gunning for mainstream popularity, not deliberately trying to shun it like those two.

Great album! Heavier than I expected which is a big plus for me!

What a way to start a 1001 albums to listen to before you die! It feels like such a long album - but in all the best ways. Albums quite often have 3, maybe 4 great tracks but this is one that just keeps on giving - Spoonman, Fell on Black Days, Superunknown, The Day I Tried to Live, Black Hole Sun, 4th of July... Listening to this on Spotify I kept going back and thinking I'd maybe finished the album and it had started a 'best of' track listing. This is an album released in the MTV heyday, and I distinctly remember the videos accompanying the tracks being of equal quality - Black Hole Sun and Spoonman in particular. Chris Cornell was special, nobody does sing like him anymore. If you're looking for the perfect introduction to Soundgarden, there is arguably no better place to start than this album.

One of the best ever

Soundtrack to my adolescence. Chris could do no wrong on the 90s. What a voice!

SPOONMAN

RIP Chris Cornell

I love this record. It’s the peak of Soundgarden. The songs are their strongest and they really found themselves here.

Goddamn I miss when rock and roll had some emotion to it. There’s equal parts emotion and power to everything happening. Cornell’s voice is next level and the production makes this an absolute favorite.

This is probably the 90s grunge masterpiece; the heavy metal White Album. The song-writing is sophisticated, tuneful, heavy, and insightful. I know some critics (Christgau, for example) finds their lyrics asinine, but, by the measure of heavy metal lyrics, they are not stupid. Cornell's voice was rarely better, Thayill's playing is inventive but less reliant on pure noise than on previous records, and Matt Cameron's drumming is best in class. His ability to make even a weird time signature sound like a straight four (until you listen closely) is masterful. Dynamic, tuneful, with classic rock influences that rise above mere pastiche, I really think this is Soundgarden's masterwork (even if I have nostalgic preference for some of their other records). The best metal album of the decade, and certainly top 3 for the entire grunge oeuvre.

My favourite band, my favourite voice, I can't score this anything but top marks. I'd double it if I could. I saw Soundgarden a few times, including once a few days after this album release, a VIP show in London. It's still one of the best days of my life. The first track they played was Let Me Drown and I was in a state of awe from the first note. This is all perfect, everything about it. I am very biased, but music doesn't come much better.

What an album! 9/10.

Brilliant

Love soundgarden

Is this really a 5 or am I giving it that rating because of nostalgia and it's really a 4? Who cares, this album is great. More polished and mainstream than Badmotorfinger and, thus, not my favorite but still really solid.

Beautiful

плотный саунд, риффы просто жир

GRUNGE. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. In seriousness, I grew up refusing to believe the grunge era ever ended. Soundgarden are a foundation of this genre. Rest in Peace, Chris Cornell.

Teenage hormonal grunge throwback.

Superunknown was the first Soundgarden album I picked up. I had read an early review that said that it was going to be an amazing album, groundbreaking even. I was into Pearl Jam & Nirvana, they had broken right around college. But somehow Soundgarden had slipped me by when I was in college. When I did hear it back in March of 1994, my mind was blown. Listen to the original, not the remastered version (they boosted the volume too much, gah.). I go back and forth between my favorites on this album. Sure "Black Hole Sun" is overplayed, but there's a reason for that: it's a damn good song. I don't skip it when I listen to the whole album, but I don't listen to it by itself. They play songs with odd time signatures so flawlessly, it doesn't sound as clumsy as in other bands. I would steer clear from the Super Deluxe Edition version, only because the Demo & Rehearsal versions... like, how many times can you hear the songs in one sitting? I know fans of the band frown on this album, thinking of it as the "sell out," but honestly I think of it as a progression from their previous album. "Down On The Upside" is a fantastic album as well. Highly recommended.

Excellent!!

Blackholesome

My haiku: My Wave, Spoonman best, Day I Tried To Live best too, How good is grunge rock.

Cut my teeth on this.

Incredible album. Great variety, strong tracks, amazing guitar work. RIP Cornell.

5, razvaliiii

Great opening track

Hell yeah!

One of my faves from grunge. R.I.P. Chris Cornell

Really enjoy this album when I'm in the mood for some moody, grungy rock. Super unknown is a great song as well as black hole sun.

A sprawling, expansive grunge/stoner masterpiece. So much variety and depth with amazing song and riffs coming one after the other. Great singing and musicianship. Like a lot of long albums I can't help but feel it would have been better if it were shorter, I'm just not sure what I would cut.

Possibly the second or third best grunge album of all time, depending on how I'm feeling about In Utero that day. Haters will say it's too long, and yeah they probably could have cut the song Half, but this is the rare hour-plus album I'll actively choose to listen to.

Awesome!

Wasn't expecting it to be as good as Badmotorfinger but it definitely is

Love this album so hard

Rip Chris Cornell Fantastic

Great!

5 out of 5 skulls

Een van mijn All time favorieten

Meilenstein!

RIP to a legend. What a classic album

Classic. RIP to a legend

god damn fantastic, so grim and evil at times but triumphant at others

Great album, already listened to audioslave but never Soundgarden. Will give this another listen

Very relaxing

One of the best albums ever.

Love this band. Great album. I remember when it came out.

Awwww yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaah!

Now I know where Foo Fighters got their sound from ;)

One of my top ten albums!

Beetje oneerlijke competitie want dit is wel een van de hoekstenen van de ontwikkeling van mijn muziekale voorkeuren. Geen slecht nummer op dit album!

Super from beginning to end. This would have been a double album only a few years earlier. It certainly is on vinyl.

Super underrated grunge album, one of the trendsetters of it's time. Plus Chris Cornell's voice is in another level

I love Soundgarden and this is the album I love the most.

Este disco es más que un disco para mí, es parte una época. Desde el "Let me drown" pasando por las guitarras del "Head Down" y las míticas "Black Hole Sun", "Spoonman", "The day I try to live", "Kickstand" o "Like suicide". Puros noventa, puro sonido grunge.

Verguizima.

Superunknown

что-то среднее между Nirvana и Alice in Chains, класс!

Welcome to the Chris Cornell show. What a vocal talent he was; on full display here. While the album drags a little long and gets a bit repetitive (feel like it could have shed a couple songs in editing) it’s buoyed by the heights of the singles: black hole sun, day I tried to live, and Spoonman, the latter of which is an eternal banger. It’s a dark, moody, grunge-at-it’s-finest album. The strongest 4.5 stars I can give. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the best grunge albums I have heard. 4.5 stars

4/5. One of the 90’s grunge classics, Superunknown saw Soundgarden take the hard-rock of their previous record “Badmotorfinger” and make it a bit slower and moodier, though there are still high energy songs to be found like the opener “let me drown” or “spoonman.” On that slower/moodier side though is what has become the bands defining song “Black Hole Sun” which is one of the best rock cuts of the 90’s. Chris Cornell was also an amazing vocalist, probably the best of the grunge scene and he really shines on this album.

Banger but a bit boring after a while, the riff of 4th of July pulled me back in

Rad 🤘... not sure I still have the attention span for this. Fell on Black Days hits different now.

Soundgarden – Superunknown (1994) On Day 190, I dove into an album that delivered a great, highly impressive listen, defined by a distinct and wonderfully weird style. What stood out to me above everything else was Chris Cornell's incredible vocal delivery his performance across this record is a total masterclass, especially on tracks like "The Day I Tried to Live" and the closer "Like Suicide," as well as on "Fresh Tendrils." The guitar work carries a fascinating style, dropping in crumbs of heavy metal but keeping it firmly rooted in grunge for the most part. On a track like "Like Suicide," those heavy, shifting riffs strongly remind me of the legendary energy of Led Zeppelin. While a few songs occasionally drifted off because of the experimental guitar interplay, the project as a whole made a massive impression. The tracklist is incredibly deep and packed with highlights. "Let Me Drown" and "My Wave" kick things off with fantastic energy, leading into the immersive moods of "Fell on Black Days" and the title track, "Superunknown." "Black Hole Sun" is an absolute banger, "Spoonman" keeps the momentum perfectly intact, and "Limo Wreck" stands out for having so much to offer across its impressive vocal and production range. "The Day I Tried to Live" is my definitive standout track of the entire session, backed up beautifully by the short but completely on-point punch of "Kickstand," the excellent grooves of "Fresh Tendrils," and the brilliant execution of "Like Suicide." A truly great experience and a definitive 4/5.

Any album with black hole sun on it automatically gets at least one more star than it would otherwise have. Also, coincidence I got this on the 4th of July with a song called the 4th of July on it? Survey says no idea, but fun either way.

Turn it up to 11.

9 / 10

Overall a bop. Like in a good way. Like this music will always be my #1 escape. Reminds me of my dad and I (i was like ??? 2-5?) riding around in his stick shift tinted the fuck out early 2000s maxima.

Feels like all of the really good stuff got crammed right in the middle of the tracklist, but I'm also just picky when it comes to grunge. Regardless, not hard to see why this is regarded as a staple of the genre. 8/10.

Pretty cool sound, a bit generic maybe, but I founnd all songs enjoyable.

Горячий тягучий летний вкусный крутой 😎 альбом

Passionately great! ★★★★

oh shit we got a heavy here basically foundational grunge/90s 💥let me drown 💥fell on black days 💥superunknown 💥black hole sun

BLACK HOLE SUN

decent

I've always felt that, out of the Big Four Grunge albums, this was the weakest. It's not on par with Nevermind, Ten, and Dirt but not far off. Cornell's vocals are the standout, but the songs are not as potent as those on the other three albums. But it's seminal and eternal. My personal feelings are that it's a four star album while those others are fives. But I have to give a five here because there's a lot of guff rated mkre highly, which is unfair.

Hells yeah. I listened to Black Hole Sun for the first time in over a decade a few days ago. This must be fate.

This was a delightful soundscape. Its the quintessential sound of rock for me. Always love Black hole sun

After my first listen, I learned I was apparently a hard-rock guy. The guitar riffs and hooks here are addictive and foresee myself revisiting this record for a long time to come. The stretch from Superunknown to The Day I Tried to Live is excellent, as are the first three songs, as well. At 70 minutes I feel as though the record could have been trimmed down a bit, but as I listen more I imagine that opinion will change. 4/5, all I need is a V-twin cruiser to go with it now.

RATING: 9.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: 4th of July LOWLIGHT: Limo Wreck

Chris Cornell’s has one of the greatest voices of all time, and this is my favourite of Soundgarden’s work that I’ve previously listened to. Black Hole Sun followed immediately by Spoonman is one of the best shot-chasers on any album ever.

Great album, solid sound. Black Hole Sun is Iconic.

7/10 not timeless but would listen again

Iconische, invloedrijke 90 plaat.

A spiritual journey, takes you through the feelings of dying, being resurrected, and dying again

Black Hole Sun and Spoonman stay my favorites on this album, but not a bad one at all!

SOLO POR BLACK HOLE SUN SE LLEVAN SUS 4 ESTRELLAS, ME PARECIÓ UN MUY BUEN DESCUBRIMIENTO QUE MEJORA A MEDIDA QUE AVANZA EL ÁLBUM

The album was really ahead of its time. I think the overall flow is fine, though it goes on a bit too long. Songs are good throughout, no duds really. Soundgarden is really spectacular when it comes to innovative breakdowns and taking the song to a place you don't expect as a listener. I think the title track "Superunknown" was my favorite off of this one.

Yeah it's good

Nice rock - like it

An album I hadn't heard in a long time from a band who are near the top of the 'wish I'd seen live' list. Cornell's vocals are incredible and this is a great album.

Very good, excellent vocals, inventive guitar work. Probably prefer a couple of their other albums, personally

Decent

Me gustó, bastante enérgico

Love this album. Chris Cornell has such an amazing voice. The arrangements are great as well. Felt the first half of the album went harder than second, so therefore ene star off for me. But there are some absolute bangers on this album and black hole sun is a classic .

Black Hole Sun on MTV, by chance, as a kid. That was the introduction. The melting faces, the overwhelming wrongness of the video, and then that voice. Cornell's voice is like an electric guitar with a full pedalboard — clean and melodic one moment, then overdrive, then full fuzz, sometimes mid-phrase. Nobody else did that quite the same way. It's technically staggering and emotionally direct in a way that technical things rarely are. Superunknown isn't quite my daily listening — the grunge/alt-metal territory sits a little outside where I naturally land. But this is the kind of album where the craft is undeniable. You hear it and you just respect it. 3.5/5 — filed under 4. The voice alone earns it.

Great grunge record. Great voice, of course. “Black Hole Sun” is so good, as are “Fell on Black Days” and “Wave”

Linkin park daddy

Fantastic classic album. Fell on Black Days is such an amazing song. Chris Cornell might have had the greatest hard rock voice of all time.

An essential Soundgarden record, sure, but good god do I hate 'black hole sun.' Possibly the only grunge song worse than 'yellow ledbetter,' but Soundgarden get a higher score solely because Chris Cornell could ACTUALLY sing. Crazy how this band predates most grunge bands, excluding- most notably- pioneers The Melvins.

This feeds my grungy, millennial heart. Some classics, but even their lesser known songs are great. Loved the album, but not yet worth 5 stars for me.

4/5 Favorite Song: Fell On Black Days

Well, he has a great voice. Like vender and Lanagan the voice keeps it rich and warm, say Unlike AiC that It, for me, stays this side of heavy metal to be heavy rock or grunge, whatever that is. Good record. 4 Star

Yay! I’ve always loved black hole sun but I’ve never listened to a soundgarden album! Which always felt sacrilegious living in Tacoma and spending so much time in Seattle. I remember when Chris died. There were so many losses that year. This album was perfect blasting on a dreary morning drive to grab coffee in Maine. Which has such PNW vibes. Though decidedly not grunge. Also Love Spoonman.

Enjoyed this.

First one I was actually familiar with prior

Lowkey fire

I like their sound! 3.5 maybe. I like the grungyness of it

Good album. Great songs

Peak and essential grunge. I prefer Soundgarden to some of the other grunge bands and I quite enjoyed this. Dragged a bit at the end but wasn't shocked there.

It's not all hits for me, but there's good reason for this album to be a foundational text of the Seattle grunge boom, at least commercially. The Soundgarden project feels more palatable or compromising than some of their contemporaries- they're a lot less alienating than Nirvana or Alice in Chains often were at the very least- but they have a real technical foundation that the others didn't. The one-two punch of Black Hole Sun and Spoonman show this off most clearly in my opinion. Cornell's vocals on BHS are extremely controlled and downright pretty, while the percussion on SM is exactly as interesting as is called for. Overall, it's a very cohesive album that shows off their best, even if I don't find the whole thing interesting.

Stone cold classic. Really love this album. RIP Chris Cornell.

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Near Perfect - Let Me Drown sets out what this album is in the first track. Huge riffs, soaring, tortured vocals and a delicate touch that most grunge bands could never get near. My Wave shows the pop sensibilities that would give them a huge hit later in the album. Fell On Black Days is incredible and Mailman is impossibly heavy. The title track races along and the next two show a poppier, Beatles influenced side of the band. Limo Wreck is huge, as is The Day I Tried To Live. Both show Cornell in fine form. 4th Of July is lumbering and brutal, I love it. Wonderful album, probably the peak of the grunge era for me.

Muy muy bueno.

- first 10 seconds and i'm thinking this is so awesome - after 3 songs i'm a bit tired of it tho - reminds me so much for childhood and radio rock - i like mailman a lot - ok ya I know black hole sun, it's awesome

Never listened to more than two songs, this is really good. Impressive vocals, tracks tend to be strong, not a lot of filler.

Rock banger after rock banger!

Classic from my youth

At one time this was my favourite album. I'm no longer 19 unfortunately.

Don’t know how anyone on here is calling this bland when Soundgarden were objectively one of the most eclectic grunge bands. Will admit that this is too long and not for everyone but I’ve always loved this album.

Great for the first listen will listen to it more tho

Yeah Soundgarden, but the album is way too long for being an ultimate record. 4/5

Forgot how good these guys were. Cornell has an amazing voice. Fantastic record.

Grunge classic from the 90s. Cornell was such a powerhouse.

Surprisingly have never given these a proper chance, but this was class

Great album, reminds me of 4th year and for that 4 stars

A great albums for drinking loads of cans under a bridge when you're 16

Let's be honest, the album is so much better than it might have been because of Chris Cornell. I love Fell on Black Days, some of the rest I could take or leave. I still thought that the album was worthwhile though

Two of the best SG songs

Wasn't expecting to like this album but I really enjoyed songs such as, "Let Me Drown," "Mailman," and "Black Hole Sun" so far. "4th of July" is so good as well.

black hole sun!

Yeah, these guys rock. It goes on a bit long, but the sound and style is right up my street. And obvs Chris Cornell's vocals are amazing - RIP.

This record was really good. I hadn't listened to a Soundgarden record before this, but I have heard good things. I'm glad to report that it is indeed great. Favourite Track(s): Let Me Drown, Fell On Black Days, Black Hole Sun Least Favourite Track(s): My Wave

Some classics here. However, Soundgarden has been one of the bands from the grunge era that I never truly got into.

This album means a lot to me. I discovered it and Soundgarden late at night, years ago, as I laid in my ex boyfriends bed and stared and the ceiling contemplating my life. Chris cut through the fog of my own sadness and drew me into his own. He was already dead at this point, but, even still, his voice led me to my future. It is because of that night that I got out of that relationship and found myself. Favorite Song: Blackhole Sun

One of my favorite bands from the Grunge era. But sometimes the songs are a little too grunge.

8/10 At it's high points e.g. Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, etc. it is top quality. It's perhaps slightly too long, but overall very good.

Heavy and awesome

Brilliantly dense and melodically gorgeous at the same time.

Grunge like treacle

Never realized how much range is in this, sometimes I forgot I was still on the same record.

One of my teenage faves. There is so much depth in this music, really bears a lot of repeat listens. And it rocks.

Cool. Yeah, I have to admit if I was coming to this album cold for the first time it would probably be a 3. It’s funny, but I don’t think I would hear the very cool drum work or appreciate Cornell’s vocals if I didn’t know them already. I don’t think I like the way the guitars are placed in the mix. I think I find them too muddy. But there was a time when this album was everywhere. Crazy. I didn’t really listen to this album at the time. But it didn’t matter. It was everywhere. And Chris did have an amazing voice. And the drum work is there. You just got to listen. 4 stars. RIP Chris Cornell. You were quite a talent. So sad you’re gone. Boolean rating: yes! Glad to hear soundgarden again before I die.

Chris Cornell, what a voice. I'm really glad he ended up here and not in a glam metal band.

Liked My Wave, Fell On, Mailman, Superunknown, Black Hole, spoonman, tried to live. Mostly single-heavy first half that powers the album. Overall outweighs the weaker back end.

If this album was in a genre I didn't like, this would be a different review. They definitely decided to just riff waaaaaay too much. Too many songs were unnecessary. That said, the songs that hit really HIT. Love the vibe, and the good songs from this album are either already ones I'm familiar with or will be in the rotation.

Very nice. Easy listen.

Never really liked Soundgarden but this is a pretty solid album. If they cut out 2 or 3 songs dare I might say it might be perfect. It amazes me that this was mainstream at one point

Grunge. Jeg blir liksom ikke helt venn med sjangeren, men dette er bra. I overkant langt, men det er kanskje ikke noe problem når så å si alle låtene er kvalitet. Top 3: Fell On Black Days, Superunknown, 4th Of July

Yhhhh !!

Listened to this one on my Apple EarPods. Superunknown is an album I'm pretty familiar with, but mostly it's first half. And I have to say, wow, what a first half. It is just back to back dark and heavy tracks with interjections of slower pace like "Fell on Black Days" and "Head Down", before culminating in the total one-two punch of "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman", tracks that totally encompass each sphere of slow, dark, and depressing and bursting, heavy excitement respectively. Then the second half rolls around, and it's just...fine, for the most part. Even in past listens, I usually tap out at this point, as the tracks head in the opposite direction in terms of energy (less thrashy, more moody) and ideas start to feel not as compelling. Even the moment where they bring it back to my prefered feel of fast paced energy in "Kickstand" ends up sounding more to me like a B-side than a proper album cut, and similarly I didn't find the venture into the more experimental "Half" to be compelling, especially with how short it runs. It luckily ends on the strong note of "Like Suicide", but it overall feels very long in the tooth for what's on offer, stretching the whole thing out to an hour plus listen. Still, I feel remiss to rate this lower than a 4. A tolerable-at-worst second half cannot seriously decay what an electrifying and monumental first half is on offer here, with tracks I have listened to dozens of times over the years like "Spoonman", "Superunknown", and one of my personal favorite songs of all time, "My Wave". From tracks 1-8, Soundgarden is completely unstoppable, and with the power of technology, I can stop my playback there and run that sequence over and over til I'm sick to my stomach.

C’était super! ça donne de l’énergie

Great listen, one of the all timers of the genre. Chris Cornell we are not worthy

Liked this. Would happily listen to it again.

Soundgarden’s grunge masterpiece is a dark and heavy journey through psychedelic landscapes and massive riffs. Chris Cornell’s vocals are truly incredible, and while some of the deeper tracks feel a bit long, the album remains a defining high point of the nineties now.

Really wanted to give this a 5 but after 2-3 listens, just can’t do it. I really like the album but don’t love it. Some really good songs but just am not blown away like I hoped I would be.

black hole sun wont you cum wont you cuuum

amazing grunge album, better than Ten and In Utero ngl. Black Hole Sun and Spoonman are big earworms. 9/10. First Listening Tracklist Ranking: 1. Spoonman 2. Black Hole Sun 3. 4th of July 4. Like Suicide 5. Let Me Drown 6. Fell on Black Days 7. The Day I Tried To Live 8. My Wave 9. Superunknown 10. Fresh Tendrils 11. Limo Wreck 12. Head Down 13. Mailman 14. Kickstand 15. Half

Pretty great album overall, a fair few songs that I'd heard before and really liked. Held back slightly as I found the album dragged a little, some parts were somewhat repetitive and lost me. Wouldn't listen to the whole thing again but happy to revisit almost half of it.

Good, but too long for how good it is. Hope that makes sense.

This was good but not great, Black Hole Sun is definitely the highpoint. Some of the songs were a blend of slowcore and grunge that made the album drag on longer than I wanted (Superunknown, for eg). However, when this effect was working at it's best like on Head Down, it was such a nice ride. By the end, I could appreciate the creativity and technical soundness of the album, which earns it a 4.

it's a solid album. i knew the hits, but the non-single tunes are good too.

I love Soundgarden. Chris Cornell’s voice is so good. Great album, just a tad long for my tastes. 4.5/5

Äänipuutarha. It´s a grunge thing.

was stressed about this one but really enjoyed it did it get a bit much ido listen in one sitting to the whole album but still really good

Great record!

i'd like to tell you about my friend Ricky. he started attending my school in 9th grade, and we were inseparable. where i was withdrawn, he was affable, unfailingly polite to every adult, hugely smart - but also mercurial. prone to impulsivity, anger. he plunged headfirst into things that seemed dangerous - fairly tame drug use, hardcore shows - while i looked on from the edge. there was a darkness in him that made me more comfortable with my own, and we built a secret language out of art that seemed to draw something black out of being alive, everything from Peep Show to Cormac McCarthy to, yes, Superunknown. i don't know who heard this record first. it feels like it just appeared in our lives, uploaded into our brains. the first memory i have of it is playing through Drown Me In on the drums, riding out that eternal Zeppelin-groove, bouncing and sticking to the bassline, deeply fucking in it. the other memories are much more communal, and consist often of Chris Cornell impressions, growling and wailing and purring through these songs in our own weak falsettos. what struck me upon returning to this record, for the first time in over a decade, was the lines i remember singing. for example: "the day i tried to win, i wallowed in the blood and mud with all the other pigs" "down in the hole, jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load" "shame, shame, throw yourself away, give me little bits of more than i can take" writing these out, reading them back, well. it's not poetry. and maybe we just sung that line about the pigs back and forth to each other because Chris Cornell sounds cool as hell when he sings it. but what strikes me is the way these songs verbalize moving through struggle, which we were both kind of always doing at the time because that's what it feels like to be young, and how nakedly we related to those songs. there was no question about whether we, too, felt like we'd fallen on black days, because why would we listen to it if we hadn't. i guess what i'm trying to say is that there's a memory-Superunknown that i thought i'd try to avoid review before leaping into it entirely, one that lives mostly in the b-side, that is expansive and gothic and really full of pain. it doesn't have a lot to do with Spoonman, it certainly doesn't include My Wave (that song sucks!), it is a slow and lumbering thing walking across an eternal desert under enormous weight. it is (or, personally was) a way for me, and my friend, and many other people to access a real earnest kind of darkness that was already living in us anyway, and to be buoyed through it. i can't pretend i still love Superunknown, the real 15-track 70-minute album. the sprawl - part of the appeal at the time, i think - and its pseudo-classic-rock dumb guy riffs hold it back for my current tastes. but god, do i love the record that lives in my head, earnest, heavy, comforting. i hope that teenagers haven't grown too online and cool to let this be an access point to challenging feelings, a way to learn to smother them in downtuned guitar until they go away, a friend

I clearly wasn't on my musical 'A' game in '94 because with the exception of Black Hole Sun this passed me by. And it's excellent. Given the Zep influences peppered through most tracks (is Limo Wreck Dazed and Confused in disguise?) it feels a bit harsh to file it under grunge. It will definitely get brought out to annoy the fam again. And after just one listen that alone merits a 4*

Me gustaron las canciones mas tristes

pretty good 7/10

наверное уже классика гранжа, от не самых любимых представителей четверки, но есть хорошие песни в этом альбоме. в целом, думаю что альбом просто хороший. не на каждый день, но иногда в вайб попадает. думаю что это уверенная 4. просто хорошо

- my wave is such a good song, wow. - the instrumentals are amazing. - love superunknown - black hole sun, fell on black days, amazing classics

Great grunge album. Never listened to the whole thing before but really enjoyed it overall. Love hearing music I recognized before within an album I’ve never heard.
