Reviews (page 13 of 13)

Ik vind Elton een goede zanger.

That wasn't as bad as I feared, apart from "Bennie", which had an incredibly annoying vocal. Highly competent songwriting and musicianship, albeit a bit unadventurous for my tastes. Some big hits and enjoyable music, but also a lot of filler. 6.5/10

Tons of songs I know, pretty fun

Muy orquestado

Boring first half

Pop, rock suave. Bastante bastante bueno. Muy melódico.

classic

Listened to this (at least the first side) a lot when I was a kid. Never noticed how cooly trippy the cover was. Of course, It's a lot harder to see detail on a heat wrinkled 8-Track. I didn't remember anything between Grey Seal ("Tell-ell me gray sock" I used to say) and Harmony (except the hit). Maybe they put the last song on earlier because of the 8 track format. Or I just really liked the song and played it more.

It's alright

A very nice album to listen to. It is not in the top of all the albums I like but very nice.

Amazing first half of the album. The second one a bit less. I didn't know that pop sounded so prog back in the days.

It was a double album, so there is a lot of mediocre filler. There are definitely some all time classics in here. Bennie and the Jets is overrated though. The epic first combo track is the best

I never paid much attention to Elton John beyond the hits, but I should have.

Felt like a long musical soundtrack -- which I'm not really a huge fan of in abundance -- with weird (bad) genre side roads that seem to come out of nowhere. Lots of obvious classics but I have a hard time trying to figure out if I think these are great songs or if I have just heard them so many times that I've been conditioned to recognize the melodies and its tricking my brain into thinking I like them. Standout tracks: Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, Bennie and the Jets (but maybe just because Q-Tip made me like it when he sampled it so well), Goodby Yellow Brick Road, Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The songs I'm less familiar with were the ones I liked most, which I think shows that my dislike of Elton John is more down to him being overplayed for decades than for the actual content. When forced to listen properly to the more popular tunes on this album even those fare well under my totally biased spotlight. Though, if I never hear Candle In The Wind again, it'll be too soon. It should be banned.

pretty solid album

Another Elton John album. Enjoyed "I've seen that movie too" and "Candle in the wind", but overall not as good as the previous one.

all the songs sound the same pretty much

Album started off strong with some classic hits, and I really enjoyed a new song for me, Love Lies Bleeding. Besides Saturday Night's Alright, the rest of the album was... fine.

Classic

An album years ahead of its time as it pre-empted Spotify bulking up every other album with B-sides and throwaway tracks from the original sessions. What were they thinking actually releasing some of these songs on an actual album? Jamaica Jerk-Off shouldn't be anywhere near the finished product, and it's not the only stinker here. Hello, Sweet Painted Lady, I'm looking at you! A double album that really should be a single album. It would have been decent with a bit of quality control. Presumably Elton was surrounded by "yes men" at this point. Someone should have been brave enough to take out the scissors and have a right old snip. Four stars as a single album with the hits plus the best of the rest, loses two for wasting my time with some utter tripe.

knew this wasn't gonna be my cup of tea but didn't know it was a fucking double album... knock it OFF. "all the girls love alice" is a banger though

okay. its a good album but is sooo boring bc some musics sounds the same. fav track: bennie and the jets

nä inte min grej.

As a British person I feel obliged to enjoy a national treasure, he's an icon for so many reason. But his albums are not good, like a bad musical without the actual show. Bennie and the Jets is a 10/10 though

it sounded good

There's an inherent flaw in being a big music fan. We're ever searching, looking for a new melody, a new riff, a new sample. During that search you pass over certain artists. I mean, you can't like EVERYTHING. Can you? No. That's where Elton John fits in. He has singles here and there that are really good. (This album in particular has an all timer in Benny and The Jets) But most of it just does nothing for me. (Pretty much the rest of the album)

I've always been obsessed with the titular track, but can take or leave the rest (even Bennie and the Jets and Candle in the Wind [sorry Princess Diana]). At least the songs I like best are front-loaded on the album (and as a sidebar: shout out to Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting for giving title inspo to one of the best episodes of Gilmore Girls)

Well know the hits; Benny, candle, Saturday night.

Awful. West-End mawkishness

Iconic

Liked, but others albums are better sorry

#369 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ I'm now starting to realise that the "eurovision sound" was out there way earlier and much more wider that I had anticipated. Not that all of this is that, but there is enough to make me notice. His other music on this record is kind of meh for me and kind of all over the place, from all pop artists playing the piano give me Tori Amos any time and even then it's not that amazing. Also, I hate Eurovision. Barely 2/5

I rolled my eyes when this album got recommended, and I gasped when I discovered that this is 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. I do not have any problems at all with Elton John as a person. My problem is with piano rock. This style to me has probably some of the corniest music to ever exist. I'll admit that this album had me quite optimistic with its first song, an progressive rock epic of 11 minutes with a nice energy and some glam rock influences. But from here, almost the rest of the track list is just piano rock that I dislike so much, and it can get incredibly tedious. There are a handful of moments l liked, like the very energetic "Grey Seal", the fun rockabilly inspired "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'N Roll)", the playful "Saturday's Nights Alright for Fighting" and I even prefer the weird "Jamaica Jerk-Off" over some of the slowest cuts. The rest I think is decent at best. After listening to this about 4 times, I think I only disliked it more and more with each listen. Piano rock is absolutely not for me.

It's ok.

Very kitsch, from the iconic cover to the lyrics. I liked Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Grey Seal, but not much more. 2.75 / 5

Elton John can write good songs but when they are spread out on an other wise terrible album, you gotta wonder if he just got lucky a few times. That Jamaica song was an abomination.

there's a lot here to like - some great vocal performances, strong songwriting, very good instrumental work, and a truly fantastic opener. unfortunately there's also a lot to dislike, with the middle of the album really sagging musically even without taking into account the racism. ultimately it very much overstays its welcome.

Some bangers but a slog. Big boring chunks.

top 3 - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, I've Seen That Movie Too. Wasn’t super into it unfortunately but a few songs were pretty good. Definitely deserves to be on this list though. I can see why he is so popular as well!

There are some good/classic songs on here but I don’t love the album as a collection. Bernie Taupin is a prolific lyricist but while there are some undeniable diamonds in his resume, like this album’s title track, I find a lot of his stuff clunky. Elton John’s voice is good, as ever, but musically this album is way less interesting than it seems to think it is, eg who on earth thought the opening track merited stretching out to 11 minutes (11!) in a swirl of wannabe Pink Floyd instrumentation?!

Eh. A little underwhelming especially with all the hype around it.

Continuing to be the populist rock and roller to Bowie’s envelope-pushing art rocker. But with about 1000% more sentiment and schmaltz. That sounds like a knock, which it is, but it’s an awfully impressive collection.

I know Elton is amazing, and when I'm in the right mood it might have been ok, but not today

This is the only Elton John album I like. I’ve never been a fan of his really but this one I like. There’s a lot more going on musically than in most of his catalog. But god is this album long. Not just time wise but the listening experience just feels long. By the end of disc 1 he’s pretty much said all he has to say, for the album and his career really. Then there’s a whole other album which includes the dreadful Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, possibly his worst song ever. Some self-editing would have made for a fine album.

Could not get into it for the life of me. Even though there's plenty to redeem it it's just too Elton John.

First song nearly sent me over the edge. Second song was okayish. Slow fucking start, but then it got vaguely interesting. Guitar part made me angry. I eventually hit skip. Third song is weird. Some kind of fake live track? I dunno. Skipped it after 45 seconds. Fourth song I liked pretty well. The whole woo-woo bit sounds nice. I think I must be in a pissy mood, though, I only made it to 90 seconds. Fifth song is a big no. Stupid title, stupid flute, stupid piano. Sixth song was promising until he opened his yap. I give up... Measured with the "How many stars better than Rufus Wainwright is this?", I came up 1 star better. Thus, Sir Elton John gets a 2.

Album is far to long, except for a few good tracks most of it is pretty boring.

Not a fan of Elton John but if I had to choose a favourite, it wouldn't be this album. 'Don't Shoot me, I'm the Piano Man' would get my vote as his best. Liberace meets Jerry Lee Lewis in places isn't my thing really.

Nah. A couple good songs, but I’m not an Elton John fan. Why does he keep talking about his sister looking good and 16-year-olds? Don’t doubt this was a big album when it came out, but it’s not for me.

Misogynist shit.

Misogynistic corporate retreat warm up music

No matter how expertly performed, piano-based showtune rock is simply not for me. I'm really supposed to get excited about E yelling BENY 50 times in a row? Why, exactly? Or a Jimmy Buffet level slop song about Jamaica? I remember roller skating at Skateworld in the 1980s, and being confused when the DJ played Candle in the Wind for the slow song during couples skate. Oh cool...a showtune ballad about how the media exploited Marilyn Monroe...now watch me reverse skate so we can make out easier! Actually, in hindsight that kind of fits. It take that last part back.

Some fun songs, but most of them are too long.

Three deservedly-famous songs, some others reasonably catchy on first hearing, some tedious like middle of the road radio, and some with offensive lyrics/production: Jamaica Jerk-Off in particular, I also don't like Dirty Little Girl. Maybe 'Sir' 'Elton John' (and Taupin) are just smug gits who happen to have written some good songs. (At first I used past tense, but neither are dead yet - maybe one or both will apologise for these songs before they go? Taupin apparently told Rolling Stone he couldn't remember writing Jamaica Jerk-Off - did he say "gee it's embarassing, I apologise"? I can't tell because I don't subscribe to Rolling Stone ...) 3/10

3/17 not really for me

- not my style

I hadn't heard this before. The hits are great but a lot of the rest of it seemed dull and weirdly misogynistic which I didn't expect at all.

mhhh, it was better than the last one but still kinda boring. Some songs were cool mbut most of them tired me out.

I really think I'm just an Elton John singles kind of guy

Well I didn't like Elton John before this and I still don't. Never so pleased as when it finished and Thunder Road by Bruuuce came on. 2 out of 5

I’m really not vibing with Reggie’s music, I’ve learned from this list. Even though all of my favorites of his are on this record (Funeral For a Friend, Bennie, Saturday Night etcetc), a ton of the tracks to me lay a static wall of generic rock to me that’s too focused on sounding grandiose in performance but not in actual musical diversity.

Some very good songs, but some were so boring.

It's alright but doesn't really need to be an hour and 16 minutes. Kind of overlong. Some good songs are balanced out by a lot of whatever tunes.

I’ve been meaning to get round to a deep dive into Elton John albums for a while. People always rave about his early 70s work but I’ve never really heard anything except the omnipresent hits. After this I’m still not convinced there’s a non-omnipresent hit worth listening to. Look I’m no different to anyone else we all like screeching Benn-ay at the top of larynxes and laughing at the weird squelchy 70s synth sounds but what else are people getting out of this? ‘Cos I’m not getting it. It’s vaguely interesting how even to my cloth-ears the opening instrumental is immediately recognizable as an Elton John song though. Not bad for a lyricist. Also, why does he repeatedly say I’m batshit during “Dirty Little Girl”. Also, do you think they had The Who in mind when they recorded Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting because if so it’s a perfect pastiche, possibly even more than The Who’s version of it.

Goodish

Painfully overrated.

I just don’t really like this guy. Sue me.

Yeah I'm sure it's great and all, but holy fuck I ain't about to listen to 2 hours.

It's kind of peak Elton John, but I have trouble caring about Elton John. The music is good and everything is generally very competent, but it all slides right off me like a smooth goop. Bennie and the Jets is fun, but Candle in the Wind is just straight up bad (cringy, awkwardly paced, hard to listen to) most of the rest, even the hits, aren't really worth mentioning. The cover however, is great! It's also cheesy, but it's so extra I am willing to go with it, and the style is unique and appropriate, it's a 4/5.

If this is the epitome of Elton John then count me out. Wow, the three songs I've heard a thousand times were still heads and shoulders above the rest. 1 hour 16 minutes? No thanks. "Say one thing nice"... The opening track was at least provoking.

Ikke fantastisk, men super godt!!! Gotta love elton

I can hear the popularity of Elton, it is a nice album and some interesting tracks, even tho is not my cup of tea.

failed to catch my attention, will listen to again later

Elton John is the soda of music, bottled sunshine that HITS when it hits. Things get just a liiittle darker in the eighties, with I'm Still Standing and Who Wears These Shoes—and that is my preferred Elton. ?? Jamaica Jerk-Off ??

I think this album was intended to appeal to the American market. Fortunately I’m not American. One or two good track interspersed with dirge. If I had it as vinyl on my shelf I wouldn’t get out of my chair to put it on.

I don't like Elton John. Benny And The Jets epitomizes my disgust for Elton John. Meanwhile, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting it's probably my favorite EJ song, but that's not saying much, but it will bring the album up to 2 stars.

Went in expecting to enjoy this. Aside from a couple of classics I found the album pretty dull on the whole

Too long and too bluesy for me. But Yellow Brick Road is a Cotton family classic forever.

Kind of boring but some hits. Couldn't really get through all of it

I find the cover more interesting than most of the songs on this album.

appreciate elton john but god damm the mf is just yapping too repititive for me

Some hits but not for me

Solo me gustaron dos canciones

Couple of good tracks, the rest is yuck

Noisy repetitive but some classics

There are very few double albums that turn out well. GYBR is no exception - this thing is bloated. Nonetheless, there are still some great album cuts (Grey Seal comes to mind). The three major singles to come from the album are not favorites either - I’d be fine never hearing Benny and the Jets ever again.

Mediocre music. Boring lyrics. Good voice. I don’t appreciate the gimmicky aspect of the the whole project, so I’m sure that creates a negative bias.

Look, Let's all just have a "Jamaica Jerk-Off" and move on okay?

It would have taken a lot for me to actually like this album. I've absorbed so much Elton John in my life with out intentionally looking for it. I have a negative reaction to just hearing his voice. I'd be fine never hearing Candle in the Wind, Benny and the Jets, or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ever again. But there are moments of this album that I enjoyed. The synth sound on track one. The "Jamaica" song. I don't mind Saturday Nights Alright. But I don't ever have to listen to any Elton John again although I have a feeling this not his only album on here.

Right after the Bee Gees, I get Elton John. I hate the Bee Gees and I hate Elton John. Nothing worthy of reconsidering in this album, I still very much dislike Elton. Sorry.

Perfectly fine genre music, but not a genre or style that is interesting to me.

Uhhhh…yeah. I’m just not big on Elton John. It’s the voice thing again. I feel like an idiot about it though!

A couple of songs that were enjoyable but didn't get my blood flowing. Don't think i'll be putting it on again anytime soon.

I think there's a problem when your lead instrument is a piano played how Elton John plays it. There isn't a lot of expression. So, everything kind of blends into a clangy mush. Despite that I recommend seeking out his John Peel radio session where he played pub piano, no singing. I do accept that it is wrong that I prefer The Scissor Sisters.

The impression I've developed of Elton John's output is an unending grapple between his personal flamboyance and Bernie Taupin's tortured, homely doggerel. Taupin will write about farmhands, but John will perform it in sequins. Of course, they recognised this conflict themselves in naming a later (and, in my outsider's opinion, probably their best) album: Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. However, this grapple is not a creative tension or a compelling paradox, it is just a bar fight between a glam queen and a trucker: it couldn't happen without both participants, but it begs more questions than it answers. John's renowned facility for setting Taupin's lyrics in twenty minutes or less demonstrates his considerable musical ability, but also the insignificance of the words to the process - he doesn't have to (or doesn't bother to) assimilate them, consider them, draw out their meaning with his music. The words are only a vehicle by which to explore melody and, while some of the melodies here are gorgeous, the mismatch of word and tune is sometimes awful. Listen to the pained articulation of "blu-oo-ooze" or "row-ow-owed" in Goodbye Yellow Road. Those vowels can't withstand such contortions. So, despite the praise John gives his writing partner, it is obvious he doesn't care about the lyrics. Why should he when they are so laboured and unrelatable, so self-satisfied, but unsatisfying? The result is that John hollers lyrics that mean nothing to him (they certainly mean nothing to me), so there is nothing under the performance, no heart, no depth. He is a more than credible rock vocalist - a little McCartney and little Little Richard - but the performance is always one-dimensional singing Taupin's words, because it may as well be a page from the instruction manual for the synthesiser or a screenplay handed to him, hopefully, by his coke dealer. This double album is a lot of music, a natural consequence of churning out songs in a third of an hour. It is the second album he released in 1973. He released another album in 1974 and two more in 1975. However, each one is no more than a document of his coked-up productivity; they're not albums per se. Well, except the obscurely autobiographical Captain Fantastic. That's not to say that the coked-up Elton John and his excellent band didn't document some incredible musical product. The first six tracks here constitute a great half hour of music (if not song - the lyrics are no good!) and that's 75% of a reasonable compilation. Throw in I've Seen That Movie Too, Saturday Night's Alright, and Harmony and the musical experience would be pretty good. If he had spent more time in the songwriting - writing less, refining more, asking what does any of this crap mean, adding discernment to his obvious talents - he might have produced a distinct artistic statement, rather than another link in the glittery sausage of his early 70s output. An Elton John with self-control doesn't write Jamaica Jerk-Off, let alone put it on a record. 2.5 Elton John is a natural entertainer, in the way he writes music as well as the way he performs it. His melodies are lovely and he always creates a terrific sense of momentum in his piano playing. Elton could, as they say, sing the phonebook and it would be good but, unfortunately, he sings the lyrics of Bernie Taupin instead, so it’s bad. That’s about it. I don’t think anyone, Elton fan or not, argues that Bernie Taupin is a good lyricist. Perhaps some people think Elton John‘s music elevates Taupin‘s words. I think Elton John is a hack because he didn’t care enough to send these lyrics back for a second draft. It’s not good enough to say ‘I’m not a lyricist’ - words have sound and texture so in a song they are music. Verdi never wrote a libretto but he put his librettists through hell demanding redrafts, sometimes dozens of redrafts, over years. Elton received a lyric from Taupin, snorted a line of coke, and sat down at the piano to set it in stone. And there those lyrics are; rhythmically illiterate, brain-fart English from a transparently nasty little egotist. The best bits of this album are the bits where you can’t make out the words Elton is singing. 2/5

actually not a massive fan a bit samey

i may appreciate it if i had the opportunity

some good catchy tunes, some annoying ones (cough Saturday night's alright for fighting cough) overall solid but it's a little too long, overwrought and theatrical for my tastes

I’m starting to question if this experiment is for me. I’ve heard of most of these albums and I love the idea of digging deeper into to songs I haven’t heard from popular albums but I’m finding it really tough to be engaged in these older albums. This is probably the albums so far that I’d heard the most songs from and you can’t deny that they’re hits but I don’t know, some of this stuff is just not my vibe and i dont know if it’s because it’s ‘outdated’ or I’m just not feeling it, regardless of age. But I’m hopefully I’ll hear something on this journey that I really love. I’m curious how many of these albums are more recent, probably not many. Also what the hell is up with Jamaican Jerk-Off??

Prima muziek, maar niet heel bijzonder. **

Too long. Some decent stuff but overall it’s a nah.

I'm sorry I'm not an Elton John fan, as I tend to dislike piano-driven music, but there are at least four classic songs on this album. I'm just not into it. Liked Song Added: Bennie And The Jets

I kind of like Bennie and the Jets, Grey Seal; I almost like Your Sister Can’t Twist, Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting

Overblown. Never been a big Elton fan, and this hasn’t changed that. Chas ‘n’ Dave without the humour, and with a few more synths. Which were the interesting bits.

oodbye Yellow Brick Road is the definition of excess being mistaken for greatness. It is big, glossy, and relentlessly confident, but that confidence often feels undeserved. As a double album, it sprawls without discipline, stacking style on top of style until individual songs blur into a parade of theatrical gestures rather than fully formed ideas. What is often praised as versatility comes across more like indecision, as if sheer variety alone is meant to justify the length. The biggest issue is how emotionally hollow much of it feels. Elton John’s melodies are undeniably polished, but they frequently lean toward melodrama without earning it, while Bernie Taupin’s lyrics veer into campy fantasy and vague nostalgia that rarely connect on a deeper level. Songs stretch on past their natural lifespan, repeating choruses and motifs until charm turns into irritation. Even the more celebrated tracks feel overworked, smothered in production and grandiosity rather than allowed to breathe. What makes Goodbye Yellow Brick Road frustrating is how untouchable its reputation seems compared to the actual listening experience. This is not a terrible album, but it is a bloated one, convinced that bigger automatically means better. There are moments of genuine craft scattered throughout, but they are buried under indulgence, filler, and a sense of self-importance that wears thin fast. I get why Elton John is respected as a songwriter, but I just couldn’t get into this. It’s like being shown a famous painting and thinking, “I'd rather look inside my fridge"

I had high hopes for this but I found it too long with too many filler songs. I absolutely love 'Benny and the Jets' but even that couldn't save this album for me.

Two minutes into the first track... "Maybe a better use of my time would be to listen to Jon Ronson's new series on BBC Sounds."

I was willing it to end. Never a good sign!

too much of an artist I don't like, some of it was musically pretty good, but overall I'll never listen to this album again

Not as good as I expcted TBH

30/100

I can’t say that I like Elton John, the talent is there, but it’s impossible to tell who he is

обычный queen 3/10

Only the hits were good. Other songs were strange and off-putting

I get why others love him, but he really gets on my nerves. I thought I'd like this more than I did. Your Sister Can't Twist is on now and I'm wanting to tear my ears out. Vapid. Was going to be a 3 until this trash came on.

Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding is a great opening song, probably my favorite Elton John song(s) After that it quickly dissolves into the overproduced, saccharine shlock that he's known for.

Although this album has the hits, I found it too long and a little bit jiring to be honest. Of course theres a handful of good ones, but I probably wouldn’t choose to listen to it if I had the choice. Listen again: I’m sure I will just because it’s Elton John Purchase for my collection: own it Favourite Song: Bennie and The Jets

I'm always underwhelmed by this album. The title track is a good song, also Bennie and the Jets but i couldn't really get into the rest of it. There is a tune that's very Steely Dan-esque but i cant recall the name.

The album equivalent of passing a kidney stone, long, painful, and entirely my fault. Almost enough to make me drink..almost

Not his best.

A five minute organ instrumental on the first track???? Maybe if you're the only human on earth who didn't know Elton John can play piano you would like that but it instantly turned me off the album. As a listening experience I'm sorry but so many songs overstayed their welcome and didn't reach the peaks I wanted them to. Overall I really thought I liked Elton John more than I did but found the album indulgent and far too long. I do like Saturday night though; he did a good job with that one.

Not much to say here really, liked the hits and it was nice to have his 3 biggest songs in this album but overall not a fan Listened: at the skate park Favourite song: Benny and the jets

Good but not for me

naja, 2-3 ok, der Rest si lala

Didn't enjoy. The title track is decent, but the rest is very dull indeed.

Soundtrack of my high school days --not a good thing. Parts of FFaF/LLB sound like they are going to become interesting, but they immediately become too schmaltzy/pop dominated. That approach sets the tone for the rest of the albums. I like half of Grey Seal but that borders on losing me; Dirty Little Girl is the first song that fully reaches me. All the Girls Love Alice nicely drives but the lyrics are a bit appalling--why can't they work together? Too much effort goes in to hearing this album.

Man it was boring. Fine background music, no more than that

Dieptepunt daarvan is This Song Has No Title.

Hits were good but man this was boring. I guess the power operatic rock thing was cool in the 70s but it has no charm for me.

Thought I would enjoy this more. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood

Prefer Billy Joel but needs must. Sure there is a time and place for Elton, that was the 70s. Quite a funny reggae track on here and SNAFF is most enjoyable. Therefore dos stats.

I have now discovered that I am not a big fan of Sir Elton. I mean his voice and piano sounds great and he's a lot better than a lot of the crap we've had to endure on this list but I am just not a fan of his work or this album. I do find it kind of perplexing why I dislike so much of this album and yet I like Meatloaf so much but I think it comes down to the feel of the two artists. Elton just has too much glitz and glamor and overall pizzaz. Meatloaf felt more real and tangible and earthy. Also this album is just kinda too long it really could've been a wee bit shorter and maybe this would have gotten three then.

It's all very Elton John. It's kind of bouncy, I guess, but good christ, it's too long. All of the songs pretty much sound the same, so an hour and 15 minutes or whatever is just too damned long. 2 stars because it's not awful, but I'll be happy to never hear any of these songs ever again.

Loaded album

I don't really know where this album ranks among other super famous/celebrated albums. It's not up there for me. The lyrics didn't resonate a whole lot and it's a pace wasn't something I was able to get in sync with. To conclude, none of my favorite Elton John songs are on this album, and I have a few.

The older I have gotten, with my broadening musical influences, the less I have enjoyed Elton John's music.

Disappointed with this album after his past endeavors. I only find 5 songs worth repeated listening and GYBR is borderline.

He is talented and the album started off promising, Benny and the Jets is a cool tune, but I found myself getting quickly bored and by the time Jamaican Jerk-off (very corny reggae pastiche, super cringe tbh) came on I was pretty much done caring. The songs are all well produced but overwrought, overindulgent, overstuffed and melodramatic and too long. "All the girls love Alice" is a promising boogie rock number but at 5+ minutes it ends up dragging. Overall I was unmoved.

Elton John is definitely a greatest hits artist for me, I find a lot of the album stuff boring, I'm sorry, I can't help it.

Another example of 1973 showing that pop-rock had experienced a peak in 1971-2, and now things were too overdone, over-produced, and overly serious. This album drips with strings, orchestral introductions and accompaniments. Arpeggios as though this were a soundtrack to some space opera. Elton John is undeniably a very talented songwriter, but this is too much. When his rocker side comes out (Benny and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright), he's fun and his product fits on one side of a 45. The 11 minute intro (Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding) whacks the listener over the head to Sit Down And Listen To Something Serious. Elton John is an entertainer, and he forgets this at several points on this album and instead asks the consumer to listen to drippy sentimentality (Track 1, Candle In The Wind, title track, etc) or shitty noodling (All The Girls Love Alice).

That was a LOT of Elton to consume in one go.

Revisar

Just not my bag, recognised a lot of songs, but not fond of them. Sure hes a lovely guy but his music kinda sucks

Did not like this as much as I wanted to.. songs sounded contrived, forced and very uninteresting. Some great musicianship can be heard but overall I don’t see the appeal.

Classic of early 70's for its time - not fan of Elton John.

repetitive

Not my thing.

Mostly overblown and self-indulgent. All traces of the storytelling narratives in Tumbleweed Connection are gone, and noodly nonsense has taken its place. Saturday's Alright For Fighting is pretty good, but otherwise this has the vast majority of my least favorite Elton John songs on it.

Elton is annoying

A couple good hits, a lot of turds and one pleasant surprise. Not my cup of tea on the whole.

2 songs I really liked but overall not my style. Candle in the wind and Social Disease were my favs.

1 song from tiktok. Not for mr

I can see why this is important, but it’s just not my thing. It’s a lot of blue-eyed honky-tonk and I need a little more stank on it. I guess the Queen of England really loved this album. Maybe that’s this albums demographic…

Gay album, gay man

I liked some of these songs, classic and new and HATED others.

Ok but knocking a star cause the lyrics grossed me out sometimes

I tried getting into Elton before Glastonbury this year but he just didn't do it for me. Crap gig anyway. So it was nice to be forced to a listen to a full album, his magnum opus apparently. I think it hasn't aged that well. There's a lot of 60/70s bands/sounds merged into one on this, but it falls flat apart from a couple of tracks. I think I've made my piece with Elton now.

Hot take: most of this album sucks.

His ability to form melodies and harmonies is unparalleled. Interesting use of synths, I'd guess a contemporary of it's time. The songs are not all as refined as they could be, often there is a lot of musical noice to the pieces. Good, but if you didn't tell me what the stand out songs are I think I'd struggle to tell you the best songs on the album I did like the final song harmony, dreamy song. I can tell it's good but it's not a great match for me

I only like the popular songs.

2. Not for me.

I can't explain why I just can't bring myself to like this. I should do, it's got lots of the sort of things I usually like in it - But I just can't get over the cringey cheese of it. Literally everyone was banging on about how amazing he was at Glasto, I didn't watch it. There's bits I find myself liking then I snap back to how much I just dislike it. I've been able to overcome a fair bit of prejudice on this 1001 albums journey but this is just too far. Maybe one day I'll "get it" - like I didn't get Bowie for ages but now love him. But today is not that day. Goes on for EVER as well.

I always suspected I do not like Elton John's music, and I can say that suspicion is true.

Had a couple of the classics on there. A little too early of Elton for my likings.

The hits have been so overplayed that I don’t enjoy them, and the rest l just don’t care so much for.

heard better from elton

It's fine. Obviously Elton John is such a talent. One or two standouts I'd listen to again, but for the most part it's just fine background music to listen to on a sunny day. It's overall pretty samey which leads to not much to really focus or pay attention to, but nothing bad

Apparently, Elton only sounds good if he's doing ballad.

Basically Benny and the Jets 17 times.

Not a fan of the stretched out ceremonial good-byes, and this one just would not end. Two ruby slippers for the nice arrangements. 👠👠

Not sure why but Elton John has just never clicked for me like other similar artists have. I really tried again with this one but for some reason I'm just not into it. The reggae song is truly atrocious though I will say.

This is one of these albums that everyone says "you must like it". Sorry, I don't. It just doesn't appeal.

Picks up a bit once you get past the 11 minute opener and the hits.

Appreciate it for what it is, but not my cuppa tea.

I dont know maybe Portola has ruined me for a bit, but I thought this was just fine. 2/5

Elton John doesn't do it for me. I know a lot of his material from its incessant play on commercial radio, and I enjoyed the biopic, but I would never choose to put any of his records on the turntable. I would not buy one from a $1 bin. I don't change the radio station when one of his songs comes on (as compared to Billy Joel, whose music I actively despise), but neither do I respond with familiar enjoyment (compared to Fleetwood Mac, who I always enjoy when they come on the radio). I can no longer tell if his classic songs (and there are at least four of those on this album) are actually _good_ songs or just played so much that they are familiar. Like, just played so much that we confuse ubiquity for enjoyment. Those 'classics' (Candle in the Wind, Benny and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, title track) aside, there is sooo much filler on this record. And some of it is bad, like "Jamaica Jerk-off'? Really? That's just embarrassing. This overblown double album desperately needed trimming down by half. I found this a real struggle to get through. I award Most Valuable Player to Davey Johnstone. His guitar playing is wonderful when permitted to approach the front of stage.

Glam is not my cup of tea.

Elton is a good artist but his music never manages to pull me in as much as other artists. Also, I found a lot of the songs to be quite similar so it didn't really ring my bell.

excited but busy day. oof. i dont like it its too 70s and not real. 2?

Started off 5*, ended up 1*. Really dropped off in interest and quality. At the start I was surprised by the subtlety. Even the original version of candle in the wind was ok, compared to the shite Diana one. But then it slowly regressed to everyone just mashing all their instruments as hard as they could.

I wanted to like this better but Bennie and the jets was track 4 and it was all down hill from there

Not feeling it.

I never liked Elton John music since I was a teenager. I gave him another chance now and the result was the same. A couple of all time hits, neat pop, but I dont liket it too much.

Aquí estaba la famosa años más tarde "Candle in the wind".

Yeah honestly. Apart from candle in the wind and benny and the jets most of the album is meh. I dont know if its suffering from the problem of because im someone who has experienced the consequences of this album in terms of its influence on music, that i feel everything on the album is cliche. Or maybe its just a mostly boring album. Jamacian jerk is the worst piece of shit song ive heard in a while

I can see why people like it. It's just a little cheesy and self indulgent for me.

Nearly 80 minutes of Elton…. Not for me. I was happy to reach the end of this particular road. I can respect the musicianship but it’s just not for me.

Super boring

It was okay. There were some highlights but I found myself more waiting for the album to end then be excited for the next song

Too long bro, trim the fat

good album, but not a huge fan

Sounds more like a best of album of showtunes than a seminal album to me. Don't hate me, it's just an opinion.

Ok, not excited about it but ok

Se acabó y llevaba media hora escuchando mirda.

Only got half way through

Not my cup of tea

No. Got to 11/17, I just cant continue.

Classic Elton John Album, but I just wasn't a huge fan. Can't put my finger on why. Might just be my mood today.

I did not like this.

Hated it I didn't even listen till the end honestly

Elton John is so shit and so boring. Just from the way it sounds I can tell he's gay.

lwk ass

Another 80 minute block of non-stop pop! I didn't even commemorate the 400th album yesterday with a comment. I could've at least provided a decent review, but that would really be against my values. Quality work is simply a bridge too far and probably beyond my capability. Speaking of beyond my capability, I am at the brink with long ass pop records. I am not anticipating an enjoyable revisit to a bunch of songs I already know. And having listened, I remain bemused and actually, a little angry. "Jamaican Jerk-Off" is funnier than anything I've ever said about white people aping reggae and it might have to become a new term for these people. I'm sure it'll be used again as there seems to be a fucking reggae track on every single record ever released. Elton certainly makes a Jamaican jerk-off of himself during that diddy. The rest of this is so mid to me. The songs are agreeable, sweet and mostly inoffensive, but this ain't for me dawg. Elton, sorry I'm 53 years late, but do you think you could redo this one for me? Cheers pal, nice one mate. 1 HIGHLIGHTS: Oh no the wealthy royal lady died I should release a song to poor people and also have several songs about girls needing a bath and mention that my sister looks cute

Is this it? The great Elton John's legendary album? The hits are so-so. The album tracks sound like outtakes from a Meatloaf album or a failed musical. Very disappointing.

favs: bennie and the jets goodbye yellow brick road i’ve seen that movie too sweet painted lady rating 1/5

I’ve never liked Elton John’s music. Cheesy, campy, annoying. Just a wasteland of silly shit. But then I heard this album . . . and it merely confirmed my opinion. This is a double album that should have been a single without a b-side. And the single would be by another artist. That would have earned this absolute phallus of an album a half star. As this site is, I can’t vote lower than one star.

Not for me.

More prog than I expected but lyrically very dated and generally not my thing.

Complete and utter toss.

Don't like it at all. No weight. Tried for an hour, but couldnt bring myself to listen to the final few songs. Its all acting interesting while saying nothing. I really wanted to like this, but I hate it.

Forgive me for not listening to the full 70 minutes of this, but there was no coming back from the Jamaica Jerk-Off

1. funeral - 2 2. uuind - 1 3. jetz - 2 4 yellouu - 3 5. zong - 1 6. zeal - 1 7. jerk - 0 8. movie - 1 9. lady - 1.5 10. danny - 1 11. girl - 1.5 12. alice - 1 13. zizter - 1 14. night - 2 15. rogerz - 1 16. zocial - 1 17. harmony - 1

Apart from a very interesting album intro which really got me excited the album ist typical Glam Rock, which is particularly slow and forgettable.

I am just not an Elton John fan, I find his voice nauseating

I cannot even finish listening the 21(!!) tracks. It feels like a drag and I don't understand how Elton John is always glorified: there is not one track that gets me excited or vibing, they all sound generic and I cannot even remember the tune. Not that I actively dislike the music, but I literally don't feel anything and whenever I listen to this album my mind just goes elsewhere. I give it a 3/10.

I'm giving it a 1 because I'm not vibing with it. I love certain Elton John songs but this album as a whole falls flat for me. There's no doubting Elton's ability to make great music but this album just isn't for me.

meh, nah

nah, as much as he's been a cornerstone of the UK music industry for a 1,000 years; EJ's stuff is not for me.

Boring, sounds like every other Elton John album

Apart from a couple of well known and well crafted songs this is fairly average 70s mor piano rock. Always thought Billy Joel did it much better.

Was fine but wouldn’t listen again. 1/5

All the excess of 70s rock packed into a double album. Prog rock song that's 8 minutes to long? Check. Stompy call and response sing-a-longs? Check. Mostly forgettable filler songs? Check. Candle in the Wind? One of the most vapid pop songs ever recorded? Check. Fuck this album and everything about it.

9 months ago I fractured my humerus in a cycling accident and had it pinned. This operation failed and I remained in pain. 2 months ago I had a full shoulder replacement and I’m now going through a painful rehab. I’d rather go through all of this again than listen to another minute of this idiot.

I don't get this

This is music for other people.

Uskomattoman tylsä. Kaikki biisit ihan samanlaisia. Mikään ei erotu joukosta tai jää mieleen.

Why is this on the list? Loses a mark straight away for being a double album. But wait! This one is a concept album about the wizard of Oz, and is written by Elton John! Who seriously doesn't know Elton and needs to hear this shit

New music but a big meh

I was really hoping I would like it more.

Está más chido Liberace.

Vinylplaten.

music cosplay

I enjoyed this album! I don’t really like slow songs but this has fast paced songs I could enjoy and I also enjoyed “The Balled Of Danny Bailey”

prefer the standard album
