I get why others love him, but he really gets on my nerves. I thought I'd like this more than I did. Your Sister Can't Twist is on now and I'm wanting to tear my ears out. Vapid. Was going to be a 3 until this trash came on.

Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding is a great opening song, probably my favorite Elton John song(s) After that it quickly dissolves into the overproduced, saccharine shlock that he's known for.

Although this album has the hits, I found it too long and a little bit jiring to be honest. Of course theres a handful of good ones, but I probably wouldn’t choose to listen to it if I had the choice. I'm always underwhelmed by this album. The title track is a good song, also Bennie and the Jets but i couldn't really get into the rest of it. There is a tune that's very Steely Dan-esque but i cant recall the name.

The album equivalent of passing a kidney stone, long, painful, and entirely my fault. Almost enough to make me drink..almost

Not his best.

A five minute organ instrumental on the first track???? Maybe if you're the only human on earth who didn't know Elton John can play piano you would like that but it instantly turned me off the album. As a listening experience I'm sorry but so many songs overstayed their welcome and didn't reach the peaks I wanted them to. Overall I really thought I liked Elton John more than I did but found the album indulgent and far too long. I do like Saturday night though; he did a good job with that one.

Didn't enjoy. The title track is decent, but the rest is very dull indeed.

Soundtrack of my high school days --not a good thing. Parts of FFaF/LLB sound like they are going to become interesting, but they immediately become too schmaltzy/pop dominated. That approach sets the tone for the rest of the albums. I like half of Grey Seal but that borders on losing me; Dirty Little Girl is the first song that fully reaches me. All the Girls Love Alice nicely drives but the lyrics are a bit appalling--why can't they work together? Too much effort goes in to hearing this album.

Eerste reactie: dit album duurt veels te lang. Mede daarom vind deze plaat een soort Prog-pop album. Tuurlijk is er veel ruimte voor de zanger Elton maar de grootse arrangementen, gierende solo's en lange songs geven het album een echt 70's prog-tintje. Andere link die ik zie ik de piano-rock waar ook Queen groot mee geworden. Nou ook daar loop ik niet zo warm voor. Dieptepunt daarvan is This Song Has No Title. De klassiekers zitten in het begin van het album, de tweede helft is minder herkenbaar en weet me ook veel minder te boeien. De klassiekers zitten voor mij op het randje tussen cringe (not my thing) en raak. Slechts 2 nummers zijn voor mij raak, de rest weet mij niet te overtuigen. Dat is ook mede omdat de langdradige 70-s muziek mij steeds minder weet te bekoren. Hits were good but man this was boring. I guess the power operatic rock thing was cool in the 70s but it has no charm for me.

Prefer Billy Joel but needs must. Sure there is a time and place for Elton, that was the 70s. Quite a funny reggae track on here and SNAFF is most enjoyable. Therefore dos stats.

I have now discovered that I am not a big fan of Sir Elton. I mean his voice and piano sounds great and he's a lot better than a lot of the crap we've had to endure on this list but I am just not a fan of his work or this album. I do find it kind of perplexing why I dislike so much of this album and yet I like Meatloaf so much but I think it comes down to the feel of the two artists. Elton just has too much glitz and glamor and overall pizzaz. Meatloaf felt more real and tangible and earthy. Also this album is just kinda too long it really could've been a wee bit shorter and maybe this would have gotten three then.

It's all very Elton John. It's kind of bouncy, I guess, but good christ, it's too long. All of the songs pretty much sound the same, so an hour and 15 minutes or whatever is just too damned long. 2 stars because it's not awful, but I'll be happy to never hear any of these songs ever again.

Loaded album

I don't really know where this album ranks among other super famous/celebrated albums. It's not up there for me. The lyrics didn't resonate a whole lot and it's a pace wasn't something I was able to get in sync with. To conclude, none of my favorite Elton John songs are on this album, and I have a few.

The older I have gotten, with my broadening musical influences, the less I have enjoyed Elton John's music.

Disappointed with this album after his past endeavors. I only find 5 songs worth repeated listening and GYBR is borderline.

He is talented and the album started off promising, Benny and the Jets is a cool tune, but I found myself getting quickly bored and by the time Jamaican Jerk-off (very corny reggae pastiche, super cringe tbh) came on I was pretty much done caring. The songs are all well produced but overwrought, overindulgent, overstuffed and melodramatic and too long. "All the girls love Alice" is a promising boogie rock number but at 5+ minutes it ends up dragging. Overall I was unmoved.

Elton John is definitely a greatest hits artist for me, I find a lot of the album stuff boring, I'm sorry, I can't help it.

Another example of 1973 showing that pop-rock had experienced a peak in 1971-2, and now things were too overdone, over-produced, and overly serious. This album drips with strings, orchestral introductions and accompaniments. Arpeggios as though this were a soundtrack to some space opera. Elton John is undeniably a very talented songwriter, but this is too much. When his rocker side comes out (Benny and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright), he's fun and his product fits on one side of a 45. The 11 minute intro (Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding) whacks the listener over the head to Sit Down And Listen To Something Serious. Elton John is an entertainer, and he forgets this at several points on this album and instead asks the consumer to listen to drippy sentimentality (Track 1, Candle In The Wind, title track, etc) or shitty noodling (All The Girls Love Alice).

That was a LOT of Elton to consume in one go.

Just not my bag, recognised a lot of songs, but not fond of them. Sure hes a lovely guy but his music kinda sucks

Did not like this as much as I wanted to.. songs sounded contrived, forced and very uninteresting. Some great musicianship can be heard but overall I don’t see the appeal.

Mostly overblown and self-indulgent. All traces of the storytelling narratives in Tumbleweed Connection are gone, and noodly nonsense has taken its place. Saturday's Alright For Fighting is pretty good, but otherwise this has the vast majority of my least favorite Elton John songs on it.

I can see why this is important, but it’s just not my thing. It’s a lot of blue-eyed honky-tonk and I need a little more stank on it. I guess the Queen of England really loved this album. Maybe that’s this albums demographic…

I liked some of these songs, classic and new and HATED others.

I tried getting into Elton before Glastonbury this year but he just didn't do it for me. Crap gig anyway. So it was nice to be forced to a listen to a full album, his magnum opus apparently. I think it hasn't aged that well. There's a lot of 60/70s bands/sounds merged into one on this, but it falls flat apart from a couple of tracks. I think I've made my piece with Elton now.

His ability to form melodies and harmonies is unparalleled. Interesting use of synths, I'd guess a contemporary of it's time. The songs are not all as refined as they could be, often there is a lot of musical noice to the pieces. Good, but if you didn't tell me what the stand out songs are I think I'd struggle to tell you the best songs on the album I did like the final song harmony, dreamy song. I can tell it's good but it's not a great match for me

I can't explain why I just can't bring myself to like this. I should do, it's got lots of the sort of things I usually like in it - But I just can't get over the cringey cheese of it. Literally everyone was banging on about how amazing he was at Glasto, I didn't watch it. There's bits I find myself liking then I snap back to how much I just dislike it. I've been able to overcome a fair bit of prejudice on this 1001 albums journey but this is just too far. Maybe one day I'll "get it" - like I didn't get Bowie for ages but now love him. But today is not that day. Goes on for EVER as well.

I always suspected I do not like Elton John's music, and I can say that suspicion is true.

Not sure why but Elton John has just never clicked for me like other similar artists have. I really tried again with this one but for some reason I'm just not into it. The reggae song is truly atrocious though I will say.

This is one of these albums that everyone says "you must like it". Sorry, I don't. It just doesn't appeal.

Elton John doesn't do it for me. I know a lot of his material from its incessant play on commercial radio, and I enjoyed the biopic, but I would never choose to put any of his records on the turntable. I would not buy one from a $1 bin. I don't change the radio station when one of his songs comes on (as compared to Billy Joel, whose music I actively despise), but neither do I respond with familiar enjoyment (compared to Fleetwood Mac, who I always enjoy when they come on the radio). I can no longer tell if his classic songs (and there are at least four of those on this album) are actually _good_ songs or just played so much that they are familiar. Like, just played so much that we confuse ubiquity for enjoyment. Those 'classics' (Candle in the Wind, Benny and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, title track) aside, there is sooo much filler on this record. And some of it is bad, like "Jamaica Jerk-off'? Really? That's just embarrassing. This overblown double album desperately needed trimming down by half. I found this a real struggle to get through. I award Most Valuable Player to Davey Johnstone. His guitar playing is wonderful when permitted to approach the front of stage.

Elton is a good artist but his music never manages to pull me in as much as other artists. Also, I found a lot of the songs to be quite similar so it didn't really ring my bell.

Started off 5*, ended up 1*. Really dropped off in interest and quality. At the start I was surprised by the subtlety. Even the original version of candle in the wind was ok, compared to the shite Diana one. But then it slowly regressed to everyone just mashing all their instruments as hard as they could.

I wanted to like this better but Bennie and the jets was track 4 and it was all down hill from there

I never liked Elton John music since I was a teenager. I gave him another chance now and the result was the same. A couple of all time hits, neat pop, but I dont liket it too much.

Classic Elton John Album, but I just wasn't a huge fan. Can't put my finger on why. Might just be my mood today.

In listening to this album I had an epiphany: I’m a hater and there’s nothing wrong with that. We are all haters for various things, and as I’ve listened to these albums on this list music has become one more than it was before. And I just can’t get past what feels to me like the pretentiousness of Sir Elton and a lot of “The Greats” of this era. It’s like the people recording these albums knew that their music was going to be A Classic while they were recording it. I’m not saying that’s undeserved, like in the case of this album it’s probably on all sorts of Top Albums of All Time awards. Just not mine.

Another 80 minute block of non-stop pop! I didn't even commemorate the 400th album yesterday with a comment. I could've at least provided a decent review, but that would really be against my values. Quality work is simply a bridge too far and probably beyond my capability. Speaking of beyond my capability, I am at the brink with long ass pop records. I am not anticipating an enjoyable revisit to a bunch of songs I already know. And having listened, I remain bemused and actually, a little angry. "Jamaican Jerk-Off" is funnier than anything I've ever said about white people aping reggae and it might have to become a new term for these people. I'm sure it'll be used again as there seems to be a fucking reggae track on every single record ever released. Elton certainly makes a Jamaican jerk-off of himself during that diddy. The rest of this is so mid to me. The songs are agreeable, sweet and mostly inoffensive, but this ain't for me dawg. Elton, sorry I'm 53 years late, but do you think you could redo this one for me? Is this it? The great Elton John's legendary album? The hits are so-so. The album tracks sound like outtakes from a Meatloaf album or a failed musical. Very disappointing.

I’ve never liked Elton John’s music. Cheesy, campy, annoying. Just a wasteland of silly shit. But then I heard this album . . . and it merely confirmed my opinion. This is a double album that should have been a single without a b-side. And the single would be by another artist. That would have earned this absolute phallus of an album a half star. As this site is, I can’t vote lower than one star.

Apart from a very interesting album intro which really got me excited the album ist typical Glam Rock, which is particularly slow and forgettable.

I am just not an Elton John fan, I find his voice nauseating

I cannot even finish listening the 21(!!) tracks. It feels like a drag and I don't understand how Elton John is always glorified: there is not one track that gets me excited or vibing, they all sound generic and I cannot even remember the tune. Not that I actively dislike the music, but I literally don't feel anything and whenever I listen to this album my mind just goes elsewhere. I give it a 3/10.

I'm giving it a 1 because I'm not vibing with it. I love certain Elton John songs but this album as a whole falls flat for me. There's no doubting Elton's ability to make great music but this album just isn't for me.

Boring, sounds like every other Elton John album

Apart from a couple of well known and well crafted songs this is fairly average 70s mor piano rock. Always thought Billy Joel did it much better.

All the excess of 70s rock packed into a double album. Prog rock song that's 8 minutes to long? Check. Stompy call and response sing-a-longs? Check. Mostly forgettable filler songs? Check. Candle in the Wind? One of the most vapid pop songs ever recorded? Check. Fuck this album and everything about it.

9 months ago I fractured my humerus in a cycling accident and had it pinned. This operation failed and I remained in pain. 2 months ago I had a full shoulder replacement and I’m now going through a painful rehab. I’d rather go through all of this again than listen to another minute of this idiot.
