Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Not really my kind of music, but the album does have some undeniable classics like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Bennie and the Jets, and Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting (my personal favorite). It deserves its spot on the 1001 Albums list, but I wouldn’t listen to it again. 7.5/10

It was very alright besides the hits that I knew but there was a few good ones I didn't remember hearing before.

2.5 stars It starts off with promise and then goes into a lot of forgettable tunes. Didn’t need to be a double album. I feel like that is said about 90% of double albums. The art of 75+ minute records that people would have to flip 3x is not relevant anymore. But there are enough good tunes to make it not terrible.

Decent, some classics on there but wasn’t loving it today.

It's Elton at his best

Has three good big songs, one mediocre big song, and otherwise fine.

15/1001 First listen. Sounds like the seventies right away. I know the hits. there’s a bunch on this one. Was feeling two stars but there’s more interesting things on here than just those tired old singles. Glad I listened.

i don’t really have any thoughts on this, i feel quite indifferent. didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, wouldn’t care if i heard it again and i wouldn’t care if i didn’t

Songs are way too long, enjoyable tho

Some of these tracks really alter the curve. As a whole it’s 3.425 ⭐️

...and he's back! Ready to rate albums again after an extended hiatus. I'd never listened to this front to back -- lotta bangers! Always loved All The Girls Love Alice and of course the quartet of better known tracks Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road & Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting. But Sweet Painted Lady, Dirty Little Girl and Harmony were also fun. Not a huge Elton John fan and likely won't put this back on anytime soon, but it's very good at being what it is!

lotta hits. lotta skips.

it starts showing

Seemed too sad for me. Other than that Elton delivers. Elton gives variety. Masterful shit!

Just fun vibes

A classic for sure...we've all heard so many of the songs on the radio. Listening with fresh ears you wonder if this wouldn't have been stronger as a single album. There's some fluff (Jamaica Jerk Off, e.g.) and you have to wonder how much drugs affected decision making. 3 (would have been 4 but too long)

Good Album

Sorry Elton, I really wanted to like this more

I was hoping this would turn out to be an undiscovered gem, but there's a lot of filler that just sounds like AI Elton John. The singles are quite good but no unexpected revelations here.

why is elton into his sister and why is this so long

pay no heed to the man behind the curtain

It's Elton John, it's great.

So this is hard to rate It is far, far too long But it contains some absolutely classic 5⭐️ songs (Saturday Night and the title track in particular) However, of the songs I hadn’t heard before, only Harmony really landed So we probably end up at a high 3 rather than a low 4

I didn’t make it through this album. It has some classics. The first half of Funeral for a Friend is an amazing piece of prog-rock. Jamaican Jerk Off is not a good look-goes up with his red face track off of Madman Across the Pond. He’s a good musician though and there are some classics on here. For me it’s more of a 2, but I will bump it up for the classics.

Some high points...but goes on a bit...it's a bit too much Elton for me in one sitting. Jamaica Jerk off might be one of the worst things I've heard in a long time...

The songs on this album generally fit into 3 categories for me: Perfect/Great ("Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road") Good ("Candle in the Wind", "Social Disease" "Harmony", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting") Meh ("Bennie and the Jets", "This Song Has No Title", "Grey Seal", "Jamaica Jerk-Off", "I've Seen That Movie Too" "Sweet Painted Lady", "The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909–34)", "Dirty Little Girl", "All the Girls Love Alice", "Your Sister Can't Twist (but She Can Rock 'n Roll)", "Roy Rogers" While the sheer volume of meh songs should edge this toward a 2, the great singles (especially the opener funeral for a friend) makes the album well worth it, imo. 3/5

Some bangers, a little slow for me. 7/10

umm yes

Pretty good, but I'm not that much into Elton John's music.

Some absolute classics here and also a few not.

Итс окэй. По-моему здесь можно было бы найти один просто разъебный альбом вместо затянутого приличного. Лучшая песня - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

I haven’t listened to this since I was a wee lad and it reminds me of my mom. I’m typically not a fan of albums that run over an hour. Too much of a risk of filler tracks and this album is no exception.

Decent a bit to long 3/5

Interessant åpning! Ikke helt for meg dette. Noe klassiske låter såklart. Men hva er den Jamaica-sangen?

It's okay, it's not my favorite but I don't hate it. When I found out Benny and the Jets was not live but was engineered to sound like that, I thought less of it for some reason. Maybe its the added in cheers? I like the way they did drums in this era.

Nothing really stood out to me besides the classics.

elton john. nice rock.

A lot of bangers on this album but also a lot of filler too. I maintain that virtually no double album needs to exist.

An eclectic collection of songs.

I never truly enjoyed Elton John. He’s a rocker and a great singer/songwriter. There’s much respect to be had. Still, this album will not find a place in my collection

A 5 for the exquisite Candle In The Wind and the title song, then 1 for the mindless Benny and the Jets. The rest fall between.

The best songs have had a life outside this album for so long that it makes the rest of the album redundant. It's good to have them recontextualised, but I don't think the filler really adds much. That said, I love a sax break. Blues roots on show with strong harmonica and banjo. Three, purely because of the hits.

I didn't hate it 2.5

I can’t claim to the biggest Elton John fan but I did but this on vinyl pretty early on in my collection. It’s a solid album, probably a bit long bit does have a handful of great songs on it. I do return to it very occasionally, it’s a good Sunday morning album

åh, er det den. Hyggeligt! 3

Classic album. I didn't know Elton rocked this hard! Favorite track: Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting

It was ok. A bit over the top for my tastes.

Lost of great tunes too many duds (note to EJ: quality is better than quantity)

Should have been great, too many filler tracks

Like it 3/5

Opening track left me pleasantly surprised, did not expect that sound. Did not get the hype around Bettie and the jets, one of the lower points of the album for me. Favorite track: Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding

I want to like it. And there are some great songs here (particularly sides one and four). But does it have to be a double album?

Ok I didn't expect the prog frost track. That was fun. The rest of the album feels like a best of album. You know and understand that he's been writing hits for a while but listening to this made me realize it. It's a very good album and I wasn't kidding when I said it feels like a best of. It's not his greatest hits, but the album has several on it, but it just feels like a huge album. Good stuff.

Elton John isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but that being said, its a really fun and feel good album that is incredibly catchy, blends multiple genres of music, and has a certain warmness to it. Feels like something I’d put on to clean my house to

nostalgic 70s piano rock.

I didn't care for Elton John on Madman Across The Water, I still don't care for him now. Music is good and well made, that's obvious, I just don't vibe with it.

I was excited when I saw this cover come up. Easily recognizable and highly regarded. I just am not a huge fan. The lyrics were not great in my opinion and sometimes I feel like I would have had a better experience if the entire album was instrumental. Don't get me wrong, some songs are beautiful. "Candle In the Wind" is an amazing song throughout. The opening instrumental of "Funeral for a Friend" is so good. "Grey Seal" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock'n' Roll)" and "Social Disease" are also standouts. Sadly, I just find myself getting bored halfway through a lot of these songs. The best songs are really good and I would come back to. The worst ones, honestly I wouldn't skip, but I don't see myself listening to the entire album again. A normal 10 song album or shorter version of many songs might land at a 4 or a 5, but as it is, it's just too long and doesn't use the time how I would want it to.

The songs are all good but like I didn’t get much out of it. Fire vibes though

the second half of the forst track was lame. dirty little girl was just worse benny and the jets + some discomfort. the rest of it was pretty solid stuff eh? actually no it falls off after dirty little girl.

it's cheesy and all and I don't like cheesy. but it has a remarkable quality and a tremendous recognition value!

great album!

Jamaican Jerk-off has aged like milk

Not really my kind of thing, but shout out to Elton for Bennie and the Jets, The Ballad of Danny Bailey and Saturday Nights alright for Fighting.

I was never really interested in Elton John. Not that I don’t like him – I’m just not familiar enough with his music to have a strong opinion about it. This was the first Elton John album I actually listened from start to finish. At the end of the first song, I was in awe. It was amazing, and I thought I was going for a 5* album. But then... the songs started piling up, and it became apparent that Funeral For A Friend was the exception. This album is really all over the place – some good songs (mainly the jazzier ones with a lot of piano), some average songs, some super cheesy stuff, and a couple of abominations (Jamaica Jerk-Off is criminally bad). In the end, I was left puzzled. I can appreciate the talent, the creativity and the passion Elton John has poured into this double LP. It’s objectively a great album, no doubt about that. But personally... only a third of the songs really brought me excitement, and only a couple of them were truly great. I guess it’s just not my kind of music.

A bit longer, 80 minutes. I'm not a fan of Elton John, but It was a nice listening. I only was able to listen to the album once due to its length

A better listen than I thought. The opening track is really fun. I was bracing for Candle in the Wind and it turned out pretty good. Plenty of hits here. The musicianship is great too. I particularly enjoyed the vocal harmonies. However this album is long. I just don’t need this much in one sitting.

Much like Elton Johns career, it starts off with a bang, and then just progressively peters out...

First off, good stuff overall. Critical bits: could have done without the white-boy reggae ("Jamaica Jerk-Off") and the slight country twang in "Roy Rogers", and while "Candle In the Wind" is a classic, it's also overplayed and the 70s production is a bit cringe at times. But three skippable songs in a 17 song set isn't bad.

A classic album that displays all the traits of overdoing everything in the 70's. The high points of this album are amazing, the rest... well it could have been left out entirely. A LOT of skippers on here. Had clear heads won out over cocaine confidence this would be a single album and not a double. All of that being said I own this on vinyl, cassette, cd and even 8 track.

Fine album, some classics on it. Was pretty enjoyable, probably wokt listen to it front to back again though.

Flöt förbi, men var inte necessarily dåligt. Skulle säga ett prima exempel på en 3/5

I get it: he's very good . . . but it's just too much like a musical for me

I thought this would be one of those slam-dunk 5 star albums. I’ve heard all the hits from this (who hasn’t?!?!?) but the deep cuts were mostly new to me. And while some of them are pretty great (“Grey Seal,” “Twist”) most of them are either retreads of earlier songs or totally forgettable. In particular, “Dirty Little Girl,” is a problem. The lyrics are aggressively misogynistic, even for the 70s, but what I find interesting is that the most intensity Elton musters up for the entire album is when he threatens to tell the world the subject is a dirty little girl. Dude, chill. Two songs ago you were singing wistfully about a sea-side resort prostitute. What the hell. And musically it’s just “Bennie” in a minor key. Anyways. By the time I got to side four I was exhausted. Sides 1 and 2 - FOUR STARS: Sides 3 and 4 - TWO STARS THREE STARS

Classic Elton, Great mix of songs

Elton John is entertaining enough but not usually my first choice when playing albums. Surprised the first song was leaning so far into the prog realm. 3.5⭐️

I find it super tough to get into double albums. This has some great songs on - I didn't realise so many of his hits were on one double album together. It's tricky to get a feel for the whole work though when it's so long. I think I like Elton John when he's creating really interesting hooky melodies and harmonising them simply but beautifully (I think he does some interesting chord voicings sometimes!) I like it less when he leans into rock and roll clichés. I kind of want to give it more time but realistically I don't know when I'm going to feel like listening to a double album.

Last listened to this when I was a kid. Thought it was too long then and my opinion hasn’t changed. Obviously some all time classic songs but it could have been trimmed to a much better single LP I think.

3 or so good songs nothing special really could've been shorter

I’ve always been lukewarm on Elton John. This album brought me around a little bit, though there were some songs that could be trimmed

Okay I get it but i dont love it

Benny and the jets really grinds my gears

Oh no. I thought I'd enjoy this. But then I didn't.

Some great songs on here. Some mid songs on here. And then there’s Jamaican Jerk-off.

A big album of soaring stadium rock, blues, rock n roll, country, and glam. Some of it has an epic sweep (the opening track feels like the overture to a musical), and some of it is more straightforward rock. There are a bunch of major songs here, and a bunch more in a similar vein. I didn’t feel a strong emotional connection to this album, but there’s not denying that it’s impressive. “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” is my favorite. I love that hard rock sound! And Elton John’s shouted vocals are great! 3.5

Ah, Sir Elton. Golden voice and golden keys. I loved the classics on this double-album. But I’m coming through a tough personal time which has hijacked my head and my heart. And I suppose my ears. I thought he could ease me back in to the project but I was not vibing with a lot of it. Too overwrought, too orchestra-y. It’s a 3.5 for me in my current state.

Some absolute BANGERS but gosh this is long

-i liked this much more than the other Elton John album i listened to back in September -i could never get too huge into this type of music honestly, but there’s no doubt a lot to like here -the cinematic piano gives the whole thing a very grandiose, positive energy i really like -Favorites are Bennie And The Jets, Grey Seal, and I’ve Seen That Movie Too

A nice album, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. It feels a bit uneven overall. It’s definitely not bad, but I can’t see myself returning to it anytime soon.

Me gustan mas otros álbumes de Elton John

The instrumental and arrangement was good. I wasn’t a huge fan of the vocals and lyrics though. I could vibe to it but wouldn’t listen to it on purpose again.

Kinda get it, kinda can't stand it.

Could probably have cut half of this out, it was alright overall but I'm just not fussed for Elton

6/26/25. Enjoyable album, like Elton’s rock style voice.

Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is like a cross between an 80s sci-fi death scene and Meatloaf. I bet Meatloaf loved Elton John. Eleven minutes is too long for an opening track. Candle In the Wind...the most famous song ever about a horny teenager. This song loses something when you know that later he'd remake the lyrics for Princess Diana. One a meditation on nostalgia and the images we carry with us from our youth....the other either a treacly attempt to express sorrow for a rich and powerful woman who never had a really hard day in her life or else a treacly cash crab and cynical injection of himself into a famous death. Bennie and The Jets is one of my least favorite Elton John songs but it was turned into the awesome Tribe Called Quest (featuring Busta Rhymes) song Solid Wall of Sound. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on the other hand is one of my favorites. All of Elton's songs have a cinematic quality to them. Maybe that credit should go to Bernie Taupin. It's a double album! And all the hits were on the first side of the first disc.....it's going to be a long day. British musicians love Jamaican music. I've Seen That Movie Too is a good song. The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-1934) is like the lyrics to early Bob Dylan with the music of a carnival. I'm not sure if this is the spiritual center or the pop music floor of glam rock. Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) would have been the theme song for college football coverage if it had been released in 1994. It's catchy and the best song since the hits from the first side. The chirping birds on Social Disease are really distracting. His hits are hits but everything else is just "Generic Elton John" song. I'm surprised he didn't write a musical, his music is like one step short of it already.

Ihan liikaa filleriä, jos ois pelkkä a-puoli, tää ois viis tähteä. Välillä sanoitukset on naurettavia, toisinaan naiiviudessaan kieltämättä silti viihdyttäviä. Piano aina hyvä, laulu yllättävänkin hyvä. Pikkusen alentuvantyyppistä ”kokeillaas tätäkin genreä kun osataan” -vibaa, mut pysyy karvan verran hauskan puolella.

A- ja D-puolet ovat todella hyviä, jopa vaikuttavia (Benny and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, yleinen rokkaus...).

Intersting that he mixes sooo many styles, throwing stuff at the wall. Not much of it sticks anymore, but some true keepers (though I didn’t find that elusive ‘song I didn’t know before’ on here, disappointingly)

Man- this was the tape that was played on the car the most when I was little. Driving to dentists and doctor appts and the grocery store listening to Bennie and candle In The wind. My brother was obsessed with the title track and couldn’t stop singing the chorus until my parents had to ban him from singing it. Good times. Some great tracks but some skippers too.

Not a big Elton John fan. I either really like or really dislike his songs. There were a few good ones mingled with the classics, but many songs haven't aged well.

As an album I have to give it a 3 because it's overstuffed and I'll never listen to it as an album again but good Lord the songs that are bangers in this record are all timers

Interesting listen, not my style.

Thai has some great songs but also has some awful tunes too - Jamaica Jerk Off anyone?!? It’s a cool album and the hits keep coming, It was good to listen to it properly as opposed to just the hits but I rarely think to put it on…

Whimsical. An easy enjoyable listen

Goodbye yellow brick road niezłe

I've never been a huge Elton John fan but was surprised I actually kind of enjoyed this one. While I probably wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again, it had some good enjoyable moments, with Funeral For A Friend being the definite highlight, I actually really dug that one.

This is a 30 minute 5 star album ruined by 46 minutes of filler

Long long boi. It was OK. Nothing in particular that I enjoyed.

Great instrumentation and opening and closing tracks. Found album bit too long.

I appreciate this for sort of putting the piano back into pop music. Some of it works really well but I think it also suffers from a bit of the 50 cent syndrome, where you could cut a lot of the songs because it feels quite bloated. I was really excited from the first song, as its definitely my favourite, I love the synth parts and I'm quite disappointed there weren't more of them. I just don't like the fast blues piano stuff, it just reminds me of the bad parts of that meatloaf album. There are quite a lot of Beatles rip-offs on here as well, which might not have felt dated at the time, but for sure do now. The ballads are definitely some of the best ones, like the title song, which is amazing, but some of the ballads just run a bit thin, as they don't really have anything special and drag on. Favourite songs: funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding, candle in the wind, goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I've seen that movie too, all the girls love Alice, harmony. Overall around 6/10

First track - Funeral for a Friend - interesting instrumental! Kinda proggy, rocky, synthy, operatic, almost even metal at one point Quite samey throughout otherwise, rock with piano lead Production is nice and guitar tone sounds very modern for 1973 Back end is quite country/western Best track - All the girls love Alice/Funeral for a Friend would be best if it were separate 3 stars

I listened to this album twice and still don't know what to rate it. I liked 7/17 songs. I saved Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and I've Seen That Movie Too to my Album's playlist. Rest of the album was fine. A bit too long. Won't return to the entire album again, but will take some songs.

Elton classics

I dont really care

Classic, just not my favorite

I really like Elton John’s music from the 70s, and even after that. His songs have a great sense of melody and are easy to enjoy, which makes them seem simpler than they really are. But his music hits harder during that 70s period. I realize that what I really look for are the buildups, often very well done, between the slower, quieter parts. I love that clear, warm sound and the little bouncy groove he often has.

Elton voice is amazing on this recording.

It was ok. I think in small doses it would have been good, but an hour and twenty minutes of Elton John is a voyage. I didn't dislike the album, it was just A LOT. He and Bernie are definitely great songwriters, but I don't think they're great album writers, if that make sense? I bet he was fantastic live in his hey day.

It's a good album, but way too long. I've learned that the ~40 minute range is a good album length.

Thought I was going to enjoy this a lot more than I actually did. Some bangers but some bits dragged.

Much better than the last Elton John record. But it felt like it dragged on much longer than it needed to. The first 5 tracks were so good and cohesive. Favorite tracks: track 1-4 6/10

Not my fave. I want to like but maybe need to listen more

Greit nok, litt kjedelig

This is an album almost everyone know but much like myself I don't expect everyone to have listened to the album cover to cover. Kinda interesting, the first song was super pink Floyd vibes. There were some classics but other than that nothing was outstanding, hidden gem level music.

This was a bit of a struggle to get through. I think Elton John is great at what he does but a few of these songs (and the album in general) dragged on a bit. Saved by a couple bangers but overall won't dig this one out of the stack anytime soon.

A bit long, but I understand why everyone calls it Elton John's magnum opus. Overall, it's a pretty great album (aside from Jamaica Jerk-off, which feels borderline offensive). Favourite tracks: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting

3.5 stars I like the ambition and audacity that drove artists to release double albums, especially in the heyday of vinyl. But there’s just sooo much bloat. Maybe my smartphone has destroyed my attention span but you cannot convince me that Jamaica Jerk-off REALLY needed to be on this album. -Candle in the Wind - Marilyn Monroe is a misunderstood icon, and I like that Bernie Taupin and Elton tried to humanize her. This version is better than the Princess Di one. -Bennie and the Jets - that intro gets me every time. These vibes are unmatched on the rest of the record. Are the lyrics about a robot band? -Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - What a 3-song run. Ahhhhhhh ahhhhh ahhhhhhhh -The Ballad of Danny Bailey - my attention started flagging after Goodbye Yellow Brick Road… I liked this song but it’s all blending together at this point. -Saturday Night’s Alright - So sorry, I prefer Nickelback’s version. As I said in the chat, it’s because of HNIC. I cannot help who I am as a person. I think Elton is singing these lyrics in jest and Chad Kroeger is deadly serious.

This is a double album... so naturally only half of it is good. And the other half should have been cut. Unfortunately, Elton was in the prime of his career, so reigning him in creatively was just not on the table. Thus we have this bloated, indulgent, never-ending double album that was honestly tough to get through. It does have 4 classic songs on it though... which is very impressive. But it would be much more impressive if there were only 10 songs on the album... not 17. It does start off strong though, really lures you into a false sense of security. For 4 tracks, I thought maybe my campaign against double albums was misguided. Maybe this would be the album that proved me wrong. But then the middle third hits and boy is it a mixed bag. The final third is similar but at least Saturday Night is there to soften the blow. There are just so many songs on this record and each one is over 4 minutes long. Time moves slowly when I listen to this record... and not in a good way. But there is a good single album somewhere in this track list. So instead of giving a list of tracks that i enjoyed, i'm going to give a new track list for the record... cutting out about one album worth of material. The goal being to make one legendary single album instead of a mediocre double album. So here it goes... the new track list: 1. Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding - Love the prog rock intro. I've never heard Elton go in this direction before, but he really nails it. Love Lies Bleeding is a banger, a piano rock barn burner. I love that chorus. 2. Candle In the Wind - It's a classic. But I do think I enjoy the 90s version better... the one dedicated to Princess Diana with deep voice Lion King Elton. 3. Bennie And The Jets - iconic. love that glitchy keyboard part at the end. nothing more to say. 4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - just a beautiful, classic song. That chorus. the pre-chorus vocal build. no notes. 5. I've Seen That Movie Too - Moody, tense track with an epic solo 5. Jamaica Jerk-Off - a fun novelty cut. I feared it when I saw the title in the track list, but it's just really fun and gives some variety to the album 6. All The Girls Love Alice - love that dramatic stompin' groove 6. Sweet Painted Lady - a nice little piano ballad 7. Saturday Night's Alright - great driving rock track. perfect for compilations of NHL highlights. 8. Roy Rogers - fun tear in your bear country-tinged number 9. Harmony - really nice album closer. I dig the line: Harmony and me, are pretty good company. Love the harmonized vocal bits.

Too long, gets kinda boring after 9 songs

Elton is a guy I'm rather fond of on a Greatest Hits level but never needed to hear more of. You could mistake the start of this for a greatest hits comp, and there are bits later on where the cocktail of glam and musical theatre works for me...but my overall impression was that it's just too damn noodlely!

It’s hard to criticize the hits that came out of this album, but it’s still never going to be a go to for me

Wow, this started on such a high, not at all what I was expecting. The rest of the album doesn't live up to the opener and I found some songs quite annoying (the Jamaican one) but still, a good listen.

Of course the songs I know I like but some of it was a bit slow for me

There are some really great tracks on this - the title track and I've Seen That Movie Too being my highlights. But it really starts to drag towards the end and there's a bit too much that doesn't work - Jamaica Jerk-Off being the real nadir, but even Your Sister Can't Twist had me reaching for the skip button.

I have never been a big fan of Elton John - I appreciate his talent, but most of the time his music is too much entertainment/show music without much essence. This album is well produced with some songs that I liked (Candle in the Wind, though I prefer the 1997 verson after Princess Diana died; or the self titled song). However, the album is too long with quite many songs that were not that great. Overall it's 3 stars at best.

A few hits but they blend into too many similar songs. Would rather listen to early Stones which this is reminiscent of. Favourite song: Harmony.

It was good. It was fun and it wasnt what I expected but I wasn't blown away by it.

I thought I liked Elton John. Didn't enjoy this album though. It generally lacks essence. "Saturday Night's Alright" is the only song I would listen to again. 5/10

This definitely grew on me the second listen. I don’t know how much I’ll actually go back to play these songs but I can see why people like this album and I can appreciate a lot of the tracks on it. Not my usual genre but definitely worth the listen.

yipee to most of the album, not a fan of ‘Jamaica Jerk off’ or ‘dirty little girl’… Favs: Candle in the wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye yellow brick road, Grey seal, Saturday night’s alright for fighting. Rating: 3.8

Some good ones, some stinkers

The title track is really good, and there are a few other good songs, but there are some huge whiffs, like Jamaica jerk off. Sometimes instead of clever he shades into offensive or just smug.

I know it's a classic, but I just don't think I'm an EJ fan.

Elton John is a lot like Paul McCartney. Some absolute classics and then the "granny songs". This album is a lot like that. Coincidentally, another one I own on vinyl.

I love elton john but my moms obsessed so ove heard it so many times that this is gonna be painful.

Some amazing songs and some boring parts

Some stellar stuff, but it's too long and all over the place. Overwhelming.

Not my genre but a good album nevertheless.

Good album solid Elton John. Candle in the wind version far better than the Diana version

Stimmlich gut, aber nicht mein Stil. Grade so 3.

The opening medley Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding is awesome. I loved how Elton John was able to build up energy by methodically layering instrumentals, eventually crashing into the half-time portion around the 4' mark. Elton John/Bernie Taupin are a fantastic songwriting duo, and there are plenty of great songs on this album. The world needs great pop hits, and Elton John provides them. Only, I feel that these tracks could be mixed up or replaced with others and there would be no effect on the cohesiveness or flow of the album. There is no need to listen to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road as a single entity. There are some truly great performances here, from rock n roll to heartfelt ballad, but I think Goodbye Yellow Brick Road fails as an "album."

Decent tunes.

a lot of great hits. love elton. so so so long which for some reason bothered me

a bit doll

Not exactly a very cohesive album I gotta say. But there's some big hits on here. And it's enjoyable enough to not suffer too badly from being a double album Standouts Candle in the Wind Goodbye Yellow Brick Road I've Seen That Movie Too All The Girls Love Alice

This album starts out really strong; the first several songs have a good variety of mood and tempo. The second half was a slog to get through. I think there were 3 or 4 songs with the same chord progression in the chorus as "goodbye yellow brick road". I tuned out halfway through.

Decent album. Some songs were lacking spice and really didn't offer much to the album as a whole.

7.5/10. Never really listened to that much Elton John before but you can tell it's him from the signature style on the piano. It's very iconic, as is some of the composition of these tunes, I especially enjoyed 'Bennie and the Jets' (which I already knew) and the latter track on the opening tune of the album (which I didn't and have still forgotten the name of). Obviously great vocals as well and plenty of fan favourites in the mix. Having said all this I don't think it did quite enough for me to put it in amongst the top albums in terms of some of the particular brand of emotion which I look for. Can certainly see why this album might take a top spot for some but for me it peaks out at a high 3.

I saw Elton John perform in Vegas and he was great live. I do not consider myself an Elton John fan, but I only really know his big songs. I liked this but didn't love it. There were some really good songs, but also a few clunkers. It dragged a little and was a bit too long. It is certainly of its time in terms of sound, and it can sound a little dated. I wouldn't rush to play it again, but I also wouldn't rush to turn it off.

I just can't really get into Elton John. Candle in the Wind is incredibly sappy and I think wouldn't be so highly regarded if people cared less about Princess Diana. Saturday Night's Alright rocks, but overall this is a pretty self-indulgently long album for how meh it is. I'll give it a 3 overall

It was pretty good but I didn’t listen to all of it. It really didn’t hold my interest.

Прослышал как-то сумбурно, всё прошло мимо.

Daydream, nostalgia, honky, pop rock

I should like this album more than I do. I like the upbeat, campy rock and roll on the second half of the record. The first half despite it’s beautiful songwriting isn’t my favourite but Funeral for a Friend is epic. I love all of the songs after Dirty Little Girl, however

I love some of Elton's songs, hate others and don't care about the vast majority of them - so my first end-to-end with him (oo-er) could be a fun ride! Favourite tracks:

I was really hoping that I would love this, since generally I like piano-forward rock and roll (like Billy Joel). And while there are some really good tracks on here, it never really hit a higher level for me. I was really energized by "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" at the start and hope it would carry me through the album, but unfortunately I think that is the best song on here. I liked when he goes a little more upbeat on the B side of the second LP, with "Your Sister Can't Twist", "Saturday Night's Alright" and "Social Disease",but alot of the middle blends together. Good but not great album.

This is the most 70s thing I've ever heard. The Moog synthesizer, the melodramatic orchestrations, the wall of harmonies in the background. When everyone from The Who to Pink Floyd to Queen to Wings were trying to make rock operas, this album definitely fits in. I've never been a big Elton fan aside from some of the bigger singles. Several of them are on this album, so I wasn't dreading it quite as much as that terrible country-western album of his I had to suffer through. I still wasn't looking forward to it, though. Seeing that the opening track is 11 minutes long did nothing to reassure me. But I have to admit, the bass lines and guitar riffs are pretty sick, the piano is fun, and the weird Reading Rainbow synth lines have an odd charm. The next three tracks should be very familiar to even the most casual music listeners: "Candle in the Wind," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (though as a Millennial, I'm more familiar with the Princess Diana remake than the Marilyn Monroe original — it was actually one of the first singles I ever bought. And I still find it weird that he recycled a memorial song). Bennie always gets on my nerves by about the halfway point, but Goodbye is one of Elton's best songs. By track 5 we're already 20 minutes deep, with another almost hour to go. Oh boy. As with most double albums, not every song is a winner. "Jamaica Jerk-Off" is amusing to say ... less amusing to listen to. "Ive Seen That Movie Too" is a better song, but it's basically a musical mash-up of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Bennie and the Jets" with different words. Then we get into the meat of Bernie Taupin's morality tales and problematic lyrics over the next several songs, with "Dirty Little Girl" being the peak of the ick. Actually, very few of these songs are winners (in my opinion). It gets a bit repetitive musically, and the lyrics are ... not great. I kind of zoned out for a while until the other big hit, "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)." By the last three songs I was kind of over it. It is both admirable and insane that the actual writing of this album took about three weeks total and that Elton allegedly wrote most of the music in three days. Cocaine is a helluva drug. But perhaps that's why several of the songs sound similar and why so many of the lyrics aren't great. I can't say I loved this album. Honestly, besides the opening track and the four singles I can take it or leave it. Elton's just always been a singles guy for me, and the more albums I listen to, the stronger that opinion becomes. I really dislike a lot of Bernie Taupin's lyrics. If you're the kind of person who only pays attention to the music and doesn't listen to the lyrics, I can see the appeal of Elton John. A lot of this album is fine to listen to, musically speaking. But the lyrics drag it down a lot. Elton John is undeniably an iconic artist who has been hugely influential on music, fashion, and gay culture. I understand why many of his albums are on this list from a historical perspective. But they're not my favorite. 3/5

This has some bangers but also it was overlong. Overall, I felt like it was decent to good. Jamaica Jerk-off is a weird track, y'all. 3/5

Startet sehr gut beginnt aber dann schnell sich zu dragen

pretty good fav- bennie and the jets

Um disco maduro de Elton, de grande qualidade técnica.

Would have been 2 were it not for the big hitters.

Hit or miss album. Some truly great tracks in Saturday Night and the title track but others run from awful ( the Jamaican one) to fine. I will happily listen to and seek out some songs but the whole album is unnecessary.

Some absolute classics on here but also some killer so only 3 stars sorry eltz

Some belters but not enough for a double album. I'll revisit the good stuff but not the album

Supposedly Elton's best record, and it definitely hits better than the previous album of his I had on this list (Madman Across The Water). I'm just never convinced about the vocals. Musically though it's very good and this definitely had more bops on it. 3.5 stars

titelsong ist mein favorit, danach viel elton john aus den siebzigern 😁

Ein Hammerlied mit Candle inthe Wind und daneben viel Elton John. Ein grosser Musiker aber diese Platte finde ich mittelmässig und zuviel 70er like

Elton isn’t someone I think of in the context of particular albums. For as long as I can remember Elton had always been a background pop culture mainstay for specific songs. This album is decent overall, and has a couple great songs, but is another example an artist where a best of compilation better aligns with what I’m looking for than multiple albums. An hour long Elton best of seems like a guaranteed five stars.

Not bad, though I found it overlong. The hits are all great but the deep cuts were just fine. Worth hearing though!

I like "Candle in the Wind", "Bennie & the Jets", and the title track a lot. Could take or leave most of it. Some of the tracks like "Jamaica Jerk-Off" and "Your Sister Can't Twist" are downright bad. Never really liked "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" either. 3.5 stars.

It’sa shame that the only worthwhile songs on this album are (a) the singles and (b) clustered at the start. Hadn’t really thought about it before, but my clear favourite is Benny and the Jets.

B-B-B-BENNY N THE JETSSSSS

Correcto

Benny and the Jets is such a great song. Rest of the album is good, but not mind-blowing, must hear this before I die.

A bit bloated. I prefer Madman Across The Water, but I still enjoyed most of the songs.

Good mix of both melancholy and theatrical, ‘big production’ upbeat songs. Would be great live!

3- Stars (7/15)

I'm torn. The four singles and two or three others are wonderful songs, the rest - which is a lot - is just ok. I don't see myself returning to listen to this album in its entirety but what's good here is really good.

Decent album.

When does prolific become prolix? Ask Elton John. 13 albums in ten years (including Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, the first album to enter the Billboard 200 at No 1). Any number of absolutely magnificent songs scattered amongst them; no one album rising above satisfactory. Goodbye Yellow Brock Road is typical of the trend. The ten minute epic Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding draws a line in the sand, which the rest of the album backs away from timidly. It’s terribly frustrating. He could have been a contender

the alice song goes so fucking crazy it makes me want to rank this higher than it really deserves. how come all the songs aren’t that good….i don’t care for his ballad-y stuff nearly as much as the more raucous banging out the tunes tracks because the piano features too heavily in the former songs. i know that playing the piano is literally his whole gig but there you go. fav tracks: all the girls love alice; grey seal

He’s obviously very talented and I’ve been listening to his music in some capacity since I was a little kid but there’s a lot of Elton John flavored filler songs on here. There are a few bangers and his piano playing is INCREDIBLE but it wasn’t enough to sustain my interest for a whole hour and sixteen minutes.

Some big tunes - candle in the wind - benny and the jets and Saturday night - the rest …..

I’ve heard it before and I expected to give it a 4, but idk something about I’ve Seen That Movie Too coming after that shitty Jamaica song really changed my perspective on this album. There’s something really effortless and vapid about this album, like he’s such a talented songwriter I’m sure he could make 50 albums like this. There’s nothing vulnerable or crunchy here, even if it might look like that on the surface. The emotions he expresses on this album don’t feel like they’re his, I think it’s his closetedness coming through tbh.

3 stars. Some legendary songs but the curse of the double album is here. A true gem of an album hiding within a whole lot of bloat.

Rock, Pop, 1973 -> 3

Good album but it felt a little bit long?

Wenn du dieses Album hörst, wirst du verstehen, warum Elton John ein wahrer Superstar ist – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ist wie eine musikalische Schatzkiste, die immer wieder neue Überraschungen bereithält.

Has 2 of my favorite songs. Long album with 2 skips. Wouldn’t listen to it in full again

This was ok. A few songs I knew

High highs, not-so-low lows (but surely a bunch of them). Have to respect Elton's willingness to explore sounds

Es muy bueno, pero me aburre. Es muy similar todo, termina cansando, no tiene por qué ser toooodooo piano. Seguro es un gran letrista que no llego a apreciar.

Pretty good, but I kinda expected more. There are far more misses than hits. The misses are still more than tolerable

Not bad, a little long, but it is a double album. I'd say very middle of the road

251/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Candle in the Wind and Roy Rogers are the stand out tracks for me on this album. Overall, fairly pleasant to listen to, but not really my thing.

I think this would definitely get better with more listens. Not sure 'Jamaica Nero Off' is Elton's finest work.

It starts strong and there are so many bangers but it is too long and inconsistent

I thought I'd put the wrong album on at first. Interesting start. Didn't hate it. I'm not on team Elton tbh, but I'm fine he exists. The world needs a little glam sometimes, this is pretty low down the list for me though. I wouldn't complain if it was on, but I'd be thinking of what to put on next. Saturday is pretty good. That Jamaica song though. Three stars.

Gostei do álbum, mas não encaixa muito no meu estilo. Dito isto, gostei de Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Bennie And The Jets e Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

I got pretty fed up about half way through

喜歡這張專輯的第一首,像是一場盛大的序幕。用了很特別的電子音跟蟲鳴的樂器聲,很酷。

too long and elton john always got a little too samey to me but sheesh there are a lot of hits on this thing

There’s some real bangers on here and memories came flooding back. The good tracks are really good but the rest aren’t great, so a bit of a mixed bag for me. On the balance of tracks like Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, and the title track, it probably about swings it to get on the list. I mean how could I not give it the thumbs up when it contains a track called “Jamaica Jerk-Off”

Too much filler. The good songs are very good. The filler songs got annoying in their abundance.

I groaned a little when I saw this was a double album as I feel more often than not, they don't warrant being that long. Saturday Night's Alright caught my eye though, a GTA V classic I appreciate the pretty broad variety in sounds between songs, but I find the gulf between the best and worst tracks pretty huge. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is a winding prog pop epic, Bennie and the Jets features some great driving piano and synths and Saturday Night's Alright is a cool hard rocker. The honky tonk stuff towards the end made me roll my eyes and unfortunately, Elton John also succumbs to the "white English guy doing reggae" on Jamaica Jerk-Off which I find so stupid (also what a name). Unsurprisingly, if this wasn't a double album with a lot of fat trimmed off I would probably rate it pretty highly. 3.5 Highlights: Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding, Saturday Night's Alright, Bennie and the Jets

its really good but the album would be much better to me if a good amount of songs where left off the album tbh. Its too much and it makes it feel a little bit lost of the high quality and peak which this album has a few. 3.5/5.0

Fun, fun, I like Elton John.

Elton John is one of those artists whose later works continually detract from the earlier substantial work. He is clearly talented and has a great voice, but I guess he is more a product of his time than an enduring artist.

Couple standouts, but I just don’t get rock and roll piano. It’s..fine I guess.

This project really made me aware that I can stand albums over 40 minutes runtime only in exceptional cases. Sad to say, this is not one of them for me. There are good tracks on here, sure, but too long to keep my attention or listen a second time.

More Elton John than should be consumed in one sitting but it was alright for Saturday afternoon listening. A bit sloggy at parts. 3.5

There are very few weak tracks here, but there are so many in total that it's a lot as an album listening experience.

TIL I only really knew the Elton John hits. Kinda nice to hear new-to-me stuff

This is an incredible album. I would say that 50% of it are songs I love and would return to while the rest is kind of boring.

Beter dan verwacht

Tja, weer zo'n gevalletje van, ik merk dat het goed is, er zitten aspecten aan die ik chill vindt, maar overal not my thing. 3/5

Good vibes

Intenssssah

Good, but waaaaay too long!!!

Not usually my style but if this was playing at a bar I’d absolutely rock the fuck out to it

Elton is alright, although not someone I gravitate to. There are certainly some wonderful songs on this album. However, it is longer than I'd like. I'm sure that is a positive for many, but when you only mildly like the album it starts to drag. Overall, it's an alright album with only one or maybe two misses, four or five straight up bangers, and a whole lot of meh for those who don't love the style.

Standard fare I listened to endlessly while in high school. 3 stars for the memories. Opening track happens to be my fav Elton song of them all.

I think this album is good objectively. I am just not that big into piano rock.

Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Benny and the Jets is an obvious highlight.

Good stuff from Elton!

Four great songs does not make an 18 song album great. This feels boated and showy.

objectively good music, i'm a big fan of Elton, and I really like a few of the tracks on this album, but I got bored and lost interest about halfway through. I think i've realised I can listen to a couple songs of his here and there, but a full length LP is pushing it. Not my kind of music.

It's good, but it feels like it goes on for a lot longer than it should.

entendo porque a galera curte tanto, mas não é pra mim

Far too long and some of the many hits on here are not that good. Saved by Saturday nights

Highs are high, but a lot of the songs were fairly forgettable

There’s a lot to like on this album, but it also feels sometimes cluttered and asinine.

I like a bit of Beck but not enough tracks on this album really registered.

Has some classic hits, wasn't a fan of the composition and his songs not featured on the top 100 were just ok and sounded like filler.

First Elton John album I’ve listened all the way through. Heard plenty of songs and live stuff, but never needed to listen to a whole thing

The singles are fun, the rest of the album seemed a little bloated. I think many of the songs suffered from being too long. 3/5

too long - 17 tracks is too many

I enjoyed the popular songs but not sure I'd relisten to the whole album again.

Mostly awesome

Surprisingly good - will definitely have to mark down for Jamaican Jerk-Off but Bennie and the jets always bangs. Dad suggested that there were similarities with the stooges which was an interesting take. Generally hard not to tap a foot to pretty much the whole album. 3.4, could've edged to 3.5/6 without JJO.

Wasn't my favorite

Clásico para ahora e innovador oara su época

Lots of recording artist of this era seemed almost determined to create THEIR Sgt Pepper. I would say it's not Sgt Pepper but it is Elton John's masterpiece.

пока не научилась отличать песни Элтона, надо продолжать тренироваться

I like Elton John, but in smaller doses. His songs are baroque and (maybe) maudlin enough that it's hard to listen to too many in a row. Cake after cake, sort of thing. So, this suffers for being a double album. There's a 4-star album buried in there.

A few very good songs, but the rest was underwhelming

Not a huge fan but some of his music is impossible to hate. His voice can be soothing. The piano is soothing.

Langweilig. Alte Musik, die mir nicht wirklich gefällt.

Opens with bold, lively, beautifully original sounding pop songs. Unfortunately, those qualities diminish as the album goes on.

Best Song: Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting). The soundtrack to the dumbest possible theatrical dance fight (in a good way). Worst Song: Jamaica Jerk-Off. This song is so absurd, I can hardly believe it's just sitting in the middle of these other iconic mega tracks. "Do Jamaica jerk-off that way?" I really don't know what was even being attempted here. Overall: Sure there's a couple really massive songs here, but there's also a sizeable gulf of relative duds in the middle. Moreover, I get the feeling that if I want to listen to a virtuoso piano-playing singer, why wouldn't I just listen to Stevie Wonder instead? He's got the soul that is missing from a lot of Elton John's music.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John is a mix of highs and lows. It features a variety of genres and iconic tracks like “Candle in the Wind” and “Bennie and the Jets,” with Bernie Taupin’s lyrics adding depth. However, some songs feel overproduced, and the double album format includes weaker tracks, making it feel a bit long. Overall, it’s a significant album with great moments but doesn’t maintain a high standard throughout.

songs were a bit hit and miss for me, some were good, some were famous, some were…. crap

Classic EJ, but just not my style.

classic Elton John. Some fun songs so classics. Fun listen.

Lots of good songs on this album

Great album, Love painted lady

3.3 Not an elton john fan and didnt really get into the album. Lots of recognizable songs and the songswriting is good. . I guess the question is if this is Eltons best but I'm not going to dig to find out.

Great album by a great singer, and performer. Some artists just know how to perform, Elton is one. Has some memorable hits, that will last forever.

Funeral for a Friend/Love lies Bleeding - really awesome instrumental intro, blends into the song about choosing a creative passion over love Funeral for a friend is an amazing song (typical Elton upbeat ballad?) but a bit long Candle in the Wind - sad but glorious tribute to Marilyn Monroe Bennie & the Jets - umm, it's got a catchy tune that goes uptempo over time and electric music samples (chiptunes?) but still don't get what the type is about (until the ending, maybe this rocks during a live performance?) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - nice song about moving away from an oppulent life back to the basics This Song has No Title - Short, nothing remarkable about the tune but nice lyrics about wanting to grow up and experience life Grey Seal - lyrics so complex I have no idea what they mean, short Jamaica Jerkoff - Rastafarian tune I've Seen that movie too - resonates to me, about someone lying to you but you know their trick, really good one, underrated gem Sweet painted lady - about a prostitute (maybe meta, we're all a working woman/man?), simple lyrics The Ballad of Danny Bailey - short, simple lyrics song about an American gangster (anti-hero) that died, awesome instrumental with piano lead the end Dirty Little Girl - literal lyrics about a hag 😅 nothing remarkable All the girls love Alice - simple tune, song about a lesbian working girl, nothing remarkable (nice contrast between the upbeat parts and the slow chorus though) Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting - nice rock tune to get pumped with the guys for a night of drinking and partying! Roy Rogers - slow ballad about escapism of watching TV/media, nothing great Social Disease - peppy ballad about being a social nuisance good for nothing alcoholic Harmony - slow ballad about seeing an old flame again into the twilight Your Sister Can't Twist - really upbeat song about a crush, nothing remarkable

Critically, I feel I should give this a 4, but I'm such not an Elton John fan, and I found this album to be too long and drag for me, so I'm giving a reviewer's tilt down to 3. There are some good songs on the album and obviously very famous ones, but many of it feels schlocky to me, and I just don't like his voice or his delivery most of the time.

Good. Not my style, but still pretty enjoyable.

Good album, big fan of Bennie And The Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road & Saturday Night’s Alright. I know/like some Elton John, but I had not heard some of these tracks before.

It’s fine. I probably won’t revisit this one.

I like Elton John, but don't looove Elton John and it isn't something in my normal rotation. I hadn't heard this album front to back before -- I liked it well enough.

Nice experience. Was especially captivated by Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. The album offers variety in musical styles and themes, high production value, an artist who can actually sing, and solid lyrics. However, there is not a single song I would go back to, let alone the album as a whole. For me, it scrapes the boundary to "great". 3.5/5

Fabulous songs surrounded by too much filler.

v good

It's fine. I don't feel too attached to it.

Like many - I know the hits, some of which I like. And I can tell he's obviously an amazing musician/composer. I really liked the biopic Rocketman, and was amazed at just how big he was in the 1970s. 2% of records sold worldwide were his around the time this album came out. Madness. So I was interested to hear an Elton album as it was meant to be heard. It starts with 11 minutes of a band being fucking pleased with itself. Track 2 - Candle in the Wind - not my thing but everyone can tell it's a solid gold song, gorgeous, classic, etc.... Benny and the Jets - I won't mind never hearing that again. US number 1, apparently! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - finally! Great track, lots going on - surprisingly short (3:12). Sadly 9 tracks of purest shit follow until Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting. There were three songs after that, which was a pity. I don't know how to rate this - some obvious all time greats, but overall I found this tedious and smug.

Some classic Elton John hits. Lots of songs sound the same though

Surprised by the cultures appropriation in the Jamaica song. Otherwise it’s alright. Saturday is a good song.

Not listened for a while. Doesn't age badly. Good album

This album's a bit hit or miss. I've never loved the ponderous opening of the first track, or the entirety of Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, and I prefer his remake of Candle in the Wind. But the title track is great, and Bennie and the Jets is a personal fave (it reminds me of my dad, who loved it). I dug a few of the deeper cuts, cringed my way through that Jamaican Jerk-Off, and felt kinda meh about a the others. Elton has melodic and harmonic chops for days, but Bernie isn't a great lyricist, and his poetry tends to keep the songs at arm's length. (Although he does have a gift for memorable phrases. Side note: The bass playing (via Dee Murray) is stellar.

Quite entertaining. I can see why it was a hit and has longevity. I do find it a bit odd the whole schtick but what the heck do I know
