Reviews (page 3 of 13)

Relaxing jazz/soul vibes; very mellow album.

Enjoyed this album so much. It made me miss my Dad tremendously. He was a huge Jazz fan. I wish he were here so I could discuss the album with him.

Classic

Loved it! Totally new to me.

Nothing groundbreaking, but some good Jazz standards. You can't go wrong with anything that comes out of Blue Note.

So wonderful - love jazz from this era. Funny enough reminds me of Hey Arnold. 9/10.

Great album, I have listened to this several times since it was the album of the day.

Looooved it, going to remember it for when I want to listen to some nice retro Jazz! <3

Might be a 4, but I’m going with a 5. Very basic, but it makes the album more accessible and easy to listen to. A lot of jazz gets stressful, but this has soul elements that make this very soothing. Almost like hold music but in good way

December 8, 2023 Great, smooth

A lot of fun. Perfect to help me stay energized and focused throughout my day.

This is just classic jamin jazz. Every bit of it fits perfectly together and just works. Great for listening or just background music. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Love me some Jimmy Smith!!

Fantastic jazz

I'll be playing this one often!

Good solid jazz set.

Very cool

I didn’t know I love organ jazz but I do.

Very nice jazz. Easy listen. Very lounge friendly. Random, but it actually reminds me a lot of a computer game I used to play a lot as a kid, Beetle Crazy Cup, which had a soundtrack just like this.

Jazz da mais alta qualidade

Super chill jazz!

I started back at the chicken shack and was amused all the way to the sunny side of the street. Then went back to the chicken shack and found myself smiling, while I hate chickens. Amazing, jazzy, bluesy music. I can listen to this all day long!

No clue how it could be any better. It's got smooth groove, easy to listen to and enjoy. Definitely a very approachable jazz... that makes you just feel cooler by listening to it. Could definitely have this on repeat.

Jazzy, funky, glorious.

Grandfather of jazz organ. Very cool!

Back At The Chicken Shack On The Sunny Side Of The Street

Love love

Fucking fantastic. Reminds me of being crammed in at Green Lady Lounge, a Sazerac in hand, band sweating it out a few feet away. Lovely.

Jazz is always influential!

groovy af diddly diddly

Very good. Definitely influenced modern sounds you hear in todays music of similar genre. 9/10

Fantastic jazz album. The sax, keys, and guitar solos stood out to me especially. Rhythm section doesn’t miss. Messy Bessie was my favorite.

Good music for relaxing

Really smooth, really chill. Good to listen to in the car. Good to listen to when entertaining guests. Just good.

Nice jazz

Awesome jazz album.

I ♥️ Hammond organ. Cut from the same joyous cloth as 'Green Onions' by Booker T. & the MG's. Take me to that Chicken Shack - This is my kind of jazz! Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Back at the Chicken Shack Date listened: 04/10/23

ya like jazz?

Love that funky organ

Incredible jazz album!

I enjoyed this. Probably add this to my workday rotation.

Loved every moment of this.

On repeat for the rest of my life. This is art.

The bluesiest organ music of all time, love it. Jimmy Smith always eats I don't think I've heard a single song of his that didn't go hard. I'm a sucker for an organ though, if an organ is present in a song I turn up regardless.

Excellent 4.5/5. Half a point lost as not long enough.

Fun Album, lots of elements that would absolutely get used in later music, especially rock

Very nice, not enough jazz on this list.

So good. !!!

So easy... so mellow... so good. I used to watch LA Law all the time growing up, but Victor Sifuentes was never my favorite attorney. It's so rare that actors are good musicians too. Regardless, I wasn't expecting this album to be so awesome.

Though I've never been a Hammond organ fan, I appreciate that Jimmy Smith was a pioneer and one of the founders of the Soul Jazz movement, which - though poo-pooed by jazz aficionados - really had legs and influenced a lot of artists in the 90s. IMO Stanley Turrentine is the star of this LP with his warm and happy tenor solos especially on tracks like "Minor Chant" where he's more front and center. He was another artist who was poo-pooed by more serious jazz fans, but that didn't stop him from recording 60+ albums. To counter all the poo-poo, I will round up.

Love it

Great Hammond B3 tones.

There aren’t many reasons to be a proud American these days, but god dammit, I’m proud to live in the country that offered jazz, and by extension, Jimmy Smith to the world. Listening to a record like this makes you, I don’t know, live?? I feel alive when I hear a group of players who just FELT the music. And to have it all on tape is a gift. Take me back to the chicken shack.

This album is wonderful. I found myself tapping my foot and swaying my head through the whole thing.

Soul jazz. King of the Hammond organ. That’s not a bass it’s Smith’s left hand. Turrentine on tenor sax, Burrell on guitar, Bailey on drums.

Really good, really chill and just what I needed for the day

Love it. Great jazz album.

Oh yeah! Not at all what I was expecting. I could grove to these organ licks all day.

приятный джазец

Great easy listening.

This is just excellent. Just love the Hammond organ on this. Got to be one of my favourite jazz albums of all time. A Blue note classic

Bluuuuuuuuues! 😍 What a groovy album. I'd love to jam with these folks

A really nice album and, again, something I am not used to listen but a great surprise! I loved recognizing the first song

I didn't know I had a kind of chicken shack but I do and this is it, this is my kind of chicken shack.

This is just perfect. Listen to it. Love it.

yeah man yeah this is some really great jazz that i hadn't been interoduced to before. jimmy smith is one of jazz's many classic musicians, but i wasn't acquainted with him or his work. i am now, and he will now be in my rotation! i love the smooth organ tone on a lot of these tracks!!!

Life is good at the chicken shack. Everything feels right at the chicken shack. Chicken shack, how ever did you make a Hammond Organ sound fun soulful and happy from the first few bars of the album it had me. (But being on the Blue Note Label was a clue to the high bar it would have met to even exist. Note to self, explore more blue note back catalogue - a seam of gold) Mmm mmm mmmmm! Love it.... Gorgeous!

I will fight anyone that's not a 5 for Jimmy

Jazzy! I liked it.

The organ really is something, isn't it?

Klo mau menerapkan “Rule of Thumb”, album keluaran Blue Note sdh tidak perlu diragukan lagi dikarenakan circle label nya yg ud melegenda. Jimmy Smith di belakang organ mampu memberikan groove yg catchy utk smua lagu, Walaupun dirasa peran Smith lebih terdengar seperti support utk sinSaxophonist Stanley Turrentine.

Добротный джазз для души с замечательным и изобретательным инструменталом. (8.5)

Loving the vibe. Great for working.

feels like it inspired pokemon xd soundtrack

A perfect album.

If it was Jimmy Smith, it was GOLD. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing the jazz master at the Hammond Organ on two occasions in the late 1970's. This precious disc dates back to 1960 and features Kenny Burrell on guitar and a very young Stanley Turrentine on the tenor sax sharing the soloing. (And with Jimmy, no bass player was needed, of course.) This and Jimmy was funkifizing before we were talking FUNK.

Amazing, really enjoyable, nothing I didn't like

Excellent

Really fun, very smooth and likable. A definitive and influential use of the Hammond B-3, easy to understand why it became a standard with people like Jimmy Smith doing this kind of work on it.

Nice smooth Jazz. Enjoyed it.

Amazing laid back jazz album. Easy to listen to attentively as well as as background music.

Good Jazz.

Wow what an album, what a session, what a band; Stanley Turrentine on sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar and Donald Bailey on Drums. Turrentine is the star of this session and the songs that he lets loose on are absolutely great. Didn't realize I was such a fan of the organ. Really pleasant discovery. 5 stars

Can you dig it? I knew that you could!

Smooth and easy. A nice massage for my addled brain.

I keep thinking I’m new to jazz, but then while listening to this realized that growing up on Pink Panther cartoons gave me a pretty extensive introduction to this style of jazz. The organ grooves along and the sax wails away and I’m swept up by it all. I may not be the best connoisseur of jazz, but I really love this!

Oh so bluesy, groovy, jazzy and 60s. Guest Stanley Turrentine is a big plus. Organ jazz at its finest.

Loved this, gotta find the record now

10/10 - groovy as fuck

Gran álbum, no lo conocía, fue un descubrimiento, el sonido del órgano es cálido y suena tan familiar, es grato asociarlo a un rostro.

What a great album! The organ gives it an extra R&B layer that works really well

very chill music i like this

I loved it! Great soundtrack to work or practically anything.

Smoooooooth

Jazzzzz

absolutely exquisite control of the Hammond

idk yet

I often find jazz music too chaotic and kind of impersonal, but this album is beautiful. It is not too technical while still being interesting. I feel like this music is connected to the real world instead of just existing for its own sake.

When I saw the cover of this one something told me I was going to love it. Smooooooooooth, wonderful bluesy organ. Love Love Love!

I never thought I'd give a jazz album five stars. But all of a sudden I have a really pressing need to work out the guitar parts. I ended up playing this twice. That says a fair bit haha. 5/5.

Amazing, soulful, music. Those keyboards are awesome.

I love it.. Jazz meets hammond B-3 organ and we have Soul-jazz. Some really great jams on this.

Awesome stuff. Very enjoyable.

I'm not a big fan of the organ sound in jazz or in style other music genre for that matter, so for me the star of this album is the blowing which thanks to Stanley Turrentine is just amazing. The rest of theband are not exactly slouches; Kenny Burrell and Donald Bailey. But for me Turrentine steals the show and makes this album a 5 🌟 effort

Paring this back to back with Isaac Hayes' "Hot Buttered Soul" was a perfectly smooth 1-2 punch. What goes perfectly with chicken shack? Hot butter! I mean come on. This album was great and perfect and I married it.

5.0 - Cool and breezy as a June morning on the beach. Incomparable jazz organ. I could listen to this whenever, wherever.

Love that jazz

Really enjoyable-- dig this

Excellent. I loved it. Got better with each play.

Beautiful, soulful, jazz.

new find for me - loved it

Great Airplane Crash Music. I'd Die Listening To It

Ya conocía "Sunny Side of the Street". Me gustó mucho todo el álbum, pero creo que aún no sé escuchar jazz. Me da vibras de escena de peli de Mauricio Garcés. ^.^' PD: Ocupo escucharlo en flac.

Basically the Organ inventor, real legend !

Lovely jazz, less showy than Miles Davis.

Very easy listening and made a day in and out of the car super enjoyable. Man knows how to make a sax sing.

The chops on this

Соул джаз 60-тых. Некоторые треки были знакомы. Этот альбом менч приятно удиаил и порадовал 8.5/10

holy cow, what an album...

Cowboy bebop

Excellent taste

Definitely not what I expected from the title! This was a very nice Jazz album. It makes you feel cozy and happy, like spending a winter day reading by the fire.

For a while, I had a CD copy of "Bashin'" by Jimmy Smith in my car, and I played that album a lot! I love this style of soul jazz, with meaty melodic lines of hard bop, and that electric Hammond organ taking it to church. Hail Satan, this guy is cool. I already had the Chicken Shack album downloaded, but I guess I wasn't ready to move beyond Bashin' until now. Objectively speaking, this album is the stronger and more consistent of the two. I can't find any moment on the album that doesn't make my brain happy, so 5*.

Brilliant

Brilliant!

A nice short 5 track 45min album... I love blues music. The radio of this one is going to be great, I can already tell.

Phenomenal. How did I never hear this? Norristown PA

Classic! And such an original, unique sound

Big fan sofar. Really enjoyed the album, maybe I was just in the mood for Jazz?

Solid album. I liked every single song. I'm very much into jazz and blues, so this album was a thumbs up for me.

Loved it! Kenny Burrell is one of my favorite guitarists of all time, very much an inspiration to me, and this whole album is fantastic.

bluesy, jazzy, lots of organ. i loved this album!

Loved it!

Classic jazz album - perfect for a coffee house vibe on a damp, misty morning.

Perfect retro jazz

awesome album. love jazz

So good. His organ skills are soooo nice

i'd never heard of mr jimmy or this album before - i'm super glad it's on this list, though. what a fantastic album. smooth & hoppin', all at once!

I really enjoyed this album and already have begun digging into his catalog!

Way too smooth. A little guitar, a little sax here and there. Very nice.

Really cool jazz album. 8.8/10

Great album

Low 4 for me for Jimmy, another Blue Note gem i don’t know with great playing and good tunes, love Kenny Burrell clocking in for a couple of tracks too.

Chill and jazzy. Would listen again. Rating: 7/10 Favorite Song: Messy Bessie

For what it is, a 4, in isolation, a 3. A little too smooth to be greater than a 3.

Tento jazz je príjemný

Cool background music. 4 stars

Nice. A lot of the jazz I've heard on this list has been willfully difficult and experimental, so it's good to hear something smooth like this.

I think appreciation for this album depends a lot on how you feel about the organ. I am not a fan, but here it is played so masterfully that it doesn't really matter that I don't typically respond to it, it is interesting, and impressive. That being said, it has such a signature sonically that while it's being stretched to the limits by pure genius, it does of course sound a bit alike at the end of the day. I liked, I thought it flew by, but I can't parcel it enough for a five.

so chill :)

Legends at work. Jimmy is arguably the greatest B3 player of all time. Add in Kenny Burrell and Stanley Turrentine and you get a great soul jazz album.

More jazzy albums on a Friday, please. "On the Sunny Side of the Street" is quite cool.

I love this list for showing me I like jazz

This was a great discovery for me. I particularly liked the sections of organ-guitar interplay. Smith is the expert of a pretty niche jazz instrument. A solid 4 star album even after assessing the saxophone penalty. (Sorry those are the rules)

Organ, sax, drum, guitar - jazz.

Good jazz. Love the swing beat

Pretty good jazz. Think I’d struggle to play the drums for some of this stuff

Ha! Looking forward to this over the Beach Boys I just had to endure. I guess that says where I’m at. This is actually quite good. Solid. More than I expected. Not quite a 5. 4 Boolean: True. Thank you 1001, never would have known without you…

Great classic Jazz

Elegant and interesting. A nice way to enjoy instrumental music

Lovely. "Sounds like the inside of my head," as someone else said on here. 4 stars

Full of catchy riffs, I don't think you need to be a fan of Jazz to enjoy the album. It definitely gets you tapping your toes. The album is mainly Organ and saxophone based with slightly noticeable guitar and drums mixed in. Jimmy Smith helped make the Hammond B-3 organ a legend in the music business.

Very chill jazz. The organ adds a nice atmosphere to the tracks, and is accompanied by a melodic saxophonist. The composition and melody of the tracks are additionally very nice.

😎🧘🏻🎷🎺☀️

Great easy listening jazz album, will definitely be listening to it again

It's very nice, although not what I usually listen, and there's a lot of music that kind of sounds like this. However, upon reading that Jimmy Smith is party responsible for popularizing the Hammond organ, I decided that this is even more awesome. Maybe the reason that a lot of music has this sound is precisely because of albums like Back At The Chicken Sack. 4/5

3.5 - Very enjoyable.

Very summery and light. Thankfully it is sunny, think this would get less in February

I love when I get a jazz album. This was great

Amazing jazz music

Un poco de jazz siempre es bien

This was really good. Really groovin'. Also love the album cover. Orange sweater, chickens and a dog can't be beat.

I regret not listening to it before. Great musician and unbeatable band

Great background music, easy listening and smooth vibes! Didn't hit me enough to become a favourite but overall enjoyable!

As satisfying as fried chicken to a hungry belly from the first notes.

Prime cleaning/studying music. Very sweet and soulful - not many surprises here but I really did enjoy the listen. Would run this back anytime I need to straighten up my apartment. Highlight: Minor Chant

Well that was pretty great! I could lounge to this.

I don't know that I've ever heard jazz organ before but this is definitely the best. I was surprised to see that Jimmy played the organ because the sax was the star of this album. I really enjoyed it!

Love the sound he gets out of that Hammond organ.

When I first started getting into jazz, this was one of the first Blue Note records that I checked out. And damn, this one still holds up. I love Jimmy Smith and his organ, and this is the kind of jazz album that anyone could enjoy. It's a classic for a reason.

The pinnacle of chill background music

funky jazz that i likes

Fun! Good bluesy background music for sure.

Groovy. Tvarkantis namus klausyčiausi

soul-jazz, church, tall grass, crops

Superbly pleasant. Listened on a rainy morning while drinking coffee. The musicianship is sublime. Locked in. Listen to Jimmy Smith.

me re gustó aunque no lo terminé

Lo amo. Es un jazz tranquilo e interesante. Esta muy guay.

Good good. 3.8

The next time, which will be the first time, I host a Mad Men-themed dinner party, I now know the perfect album to have playing in the background. Very suave.

So good and smooth. Jimmy Smith’s work is always a great listen.

Great album. Smith was a master. This record very much creates a specific tone and vibe, which I’ve enjoyed for many years now. Not something I need to listen to every day, but valid nonetheless and very satisfying. Always loved the cover too.

Was a complete surprise and I really enjoyed even though it’s not my usual thing at all

could put you on any time

Very solid Jazz record. Digged the vibe, would make for good background music at a social gathering or a restaurant.

Back at The Chicken Shack- I've heard this one before, very fun No more individual song comments lmao i cannot keep up with that Love how good this is as background music

Oh, I'm digging this. What a great listen on a Friday. The soul was palpable in this. 8/10.

Loved this jazz offering. Smooth cool and satisfying. 4.2

Smooooth. Some really fun jamming here. Not very sticky, though. Didn’t stay with me. 7/10 Quite Likeable

Artiste inconnu. =>4/5

That was a fun spot of jazz. Thanks, Jimmy!

Smith really shares the spotlight here, which keeps these four songs sounding fresh. Easy to listen to, but missing the real flash that would make it amazing.

I had no idea what to expect and this blew me away. Excellent music for my morning commute.

Surprisingly interesting mixture of soul, jazz and blues (* Wikipedia informs me it's called soul jazz and bebop or hard bop), but for the most part it feels very dated (* because it is from 1960) and while the sound is not bad (* listened via Qobuz 24-Bit 192kHz HiRes audio on a proper stereo speaker setup), it feels kinda stuffy. Maybe it was the mics of the day? Anyway, I didn't mind it at all (* especially on top of the noughts instrumental dancey pop ditty I listened previous). * marked parts added to the writing after listening to the whole album.

Nice. I am not a fan of jazz, but this was pretty good. Accessible. Easy. Nice to have on while doing other things. Bonus star for the doggo on the cover. (4)

Good vibes, pretty chill Stand-outs [THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME]

Rico rico

Nice choice of an album to show off probably *the* musician who helped popularize the Hammond/electric organ in the late 50s and 60s. Real nice blend of soul and jazz music, and full of tasty licks and smooth solos. 8.5/10

7.5/10 It's a nice Jazz album but nothing really stands out to me

great listen!

Pay attention or don’t, this is solid

Fun album with a great line-up. Some good grooves. It is mostly blues bars but the improvisation is interesting and the grooves are really solid.

Really enjoyed this. Everything about it was perfect. A perfect mix of jazz and Funk. Would listen to it again and buy it if I saw it. Messy Bessie was the standout. 4 stars

If I’m being completely honest — I listened to this album in parts. It’s hard for me to really comment on it, but it seems to be an album with soul. 7/10

🎺✨✨✨

I really enjoyed this album. Very groovy jazz album featuring Jimmy Smith on the Hammond B-3 organ , Stanley Turrentine on Sax, Donald Bailey on Drums and Kenny Burrell. Five tracks all worth a listen. 4.4

Really dug this. Some really nice guitar work, and I’m always a sucker for a B3 organ. Will probably end up coming back to this one.

This is a great discovery. Smith's soloing at the Hammond is effortlessly beautiful, smooth and cool, like a summer cocktail, a sublime jazz quartet with Stanley Turrentine: sax, Kenny Burrell: guitar and Donald Bailey: drums.

Best Song: Back at the Chicken Shack This remains not really 100% my type of music but this had a little bit more of an up tempo that makes some use cases for it. I listened while working and found it relatively enjoyable. Plus, as a Phish/Grateful Dead fan, I can hear a lot of their jams in these songs. But unlike Phish/Grateful Dead these are all jams and not as much songs. 4/5.

Funky also cool 8)

perfect sunday morning album

Strong 3,5

I suppose this was bound to happen eventually, but I've finally arrived at an album in which every track is enjoyable enough to be a personal highlight, but not quite at the level where I feel a five is warranted. Of course, Back at the Chicken Shack only has four tracks, but each one is over seven minutes long and could have easily worn my patience thin if the music wasn't compelling. Fortunately, it is – I'm curious to dig deeper into Jimmy Smith's discography after this! Highlights: ALL OF 'EM, BUT WITH AN ASTERISK

Great stuff. Added straight to the rotation!

Noice. Songs were longer than I expected. I went in thinking it would be a short listen based on the short track list, but they're all pretty long. I like it very much.

snoopy

Springsteen-esque

Now this is a chicken shack that this vegan can get behind.

Great Jazz Album with some funky Organ playing and decent Sax as well

so fun

I will be returning to the chicken shack

Solid early 60s bluesy record.

u know what? hell yeah

Jazz Will always be good. What more can I say? It’s always amazing

Good stuff.

I rather enjoyed this as a gentle, breezy album to laze around to in my hostel bed after last night's fun. Quite similar to Booker T. & the MGs compositionally and in sound; where the Hammond organ exudes warmth, whilst the drumming here is a joy to wrap your head around, propelling these tracks into interesting directions. Back At The Chicken Shack felt a lot more engaging to me, however, owing to its utilisation of the saxophone in an almost "vocal-like" fashion, where every note tells a story.

A revelation! Love this & never heard it. This is my kinda jazz!

Album 5 3/5/26 Exactly what I needed today! My face lit up as the album started because my local jazz station WDCB uses the title track as the theme for their "jazz calendar" where a host rattles off all the places to see jazz shows or jam the blues in Chicago that night. Guess I never thought of seeking out the song name. I remember watching a video about jazz organ tone with Larry Goldings once where he kept referring to "Jimmy Smith settings" as the gold standard. Solid to light 4 stars, only real critique I have is that the album was pretty much all at one tempo, songs were not very distinguishable, but that suits it well for background listening. Can see myself listening to this while working at the warehouse, walking the dog, cooking, etc. Jimmy Smith only having this album on the list will definitely lead to me listening to more of his work of my own free will

Master of the B3. I generally like everything he does.

Loved it, 4 stars only because it felt a little samey throughout. But what was on offer was really great.

ABso-LUTELY!! This is what I'm fkn talkn bout. Love Jimmy, love the Chicken Shack. Kenny B is fantastic as always. Mister Stanley T showing who's boss. I discovered Jimmy Smith back when I was first getting into jazz & didn't yet know the lay of the land. I was just blindly scooping up handfuls with little understanding of the breadth of the spectrum. This record was directly in line with exactly what brung me & it was love at first listen.

Great stuff. Who doesn't love jazz organ

Loved it! Very easy to listen to, and is great both as a main focus or as ambient background music. Hard not to be happy while listening

Quite far from my comfort zone but I liked this one a lot

This was relaxing and groovy. Reminded me of Booker T. and the MGs and some of it felt closer to R&B than jazz at times.

Nice bluesy jazz. Love the title & album cover.

Unexpected banger

Wasn’t sure what to expect and I loved it I appreciate jazz and keep growing an interest in it and this was the perfect soundtrack to begin my work day. Added to my list of vinyl to buy.

Reasonably definitive soul jazz. Beautifully played by all 4. Im glad to see a Jimmy Smith album in the 1001 though I’m not convinced it should be this one. Probably a 3.5, I’m happy to give this 4 stars.

Peak Blues

Very enjoyable. Jazzy and uplifting.

Cool and groovy. Fun organ jazz, felt like I was watching a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving but I like A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving so that's fine with me. My family used to have 2 organs but now we have 0. Big mistake. Highlights: Hammond Organ

Wonderful music.

This is pretty excellent jazz.

So that's how you make a Hammond organ not shit!

I really liked this one. Great groove for a nice background vibe.

Favourite Songs: When I Grow Too Old To Dream Minor Chant

right off the bat, why are these songs so long??? 5 minutes in, I get it. I'm at the chicken shack, if I think about it, the songs seemingly go on forever, but I don't actually notice because the music is good and the vibes are right, that's life, baby. I'm enjoying myself. 4 stars.

This is an excellent album. I love the organ I love that it is the centerpiece of all these songs. Everyone who plays on here is really great especially the guitarist and saxophonist.

Honestly this is the kind of album I expect from this whole project. Smith was wildly innovative and influential on the organ. All tracks slap. It's a great example of the genre. All performances are top tier. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star album for me is the fact that I like a couple other Jimmy Smith albums a bit more. But that also makes me hope there are more Jimmy Smith albums on this list.

free-range

Very cool and chill; nice jazz for a rainy day like today.

This was great. Really enjoyed the organ in the background. 4/5

I was kind of into this felt like hey Arnold’s room music

Love me some jazz and blues

Smooth as butter on a skillet. Would dine at this chicken shack again.

Fabulous! Played this whilst I was working and found it to be the perfect background music for my task today. Mellow and mellifluous. All artists should pose with their pets on their album covers from now on. When I'm World King, it'll be the first - and most important - law that I mandate.

Я люблю джаз, но это однотипно

I love this and don't want it to end. I don't know anything about jazz. This is also a top 5 album cover so far in my project.

Really liked this and love the album cover :)

Really nice Jazz album, will listen again.

Perfect for a bank holiday morning. Meandering jazz

first listen great stuff

Heel erg leuk! Heb het veel opgezet, de instrumenten klinken heel goed bij elkaar, vond de Hammond leuk en de sax deed ook waar die voor bedoeld is.

Very solid record all around. I prefer a more experimental brand of jazz but there’s nothing to complain about here.

I enjoyed this one a lot. It's not quite on par with the other jazz albums I've heard so far on this list, but considering I'm comparing it to, say, 'Kind of Blue', it's a bit of an unfair comparison. It's still very good, and I'd gladly listen to this again. 4.25/5

I love Jimmy Smith. Even if this isn't my favorite it's still damn good.

favorite track: back at the chicken shack least favorite: dont have one they're all vibey 8.5/10

The sound of the album was not quite was I was expecting after I read the title and looked at the cover, I definitely believed this would be a similar experience to hearing a Frank Zappa record for the first time, yet I can say I was surprised to find out it this was a jazz album. The songs a few and definitely lengthy, but time flies when the saxophone and organ take the spotlight every so often, focusing your attention solely on the music. The guitar gets a chance to shine as well, all while the drummer adds excellent grooves the entire time. This album is straightforward; it's jazz, but it's jazz that's played with soul.

enjoyable. i'd eat chicken while listening to this. in fact i ate some chicken while listening to this.

Good for having on while working or background but just not a big jazz guy

Such calming music. Not what I expected from the cover. When I think of jazz, I think of cities.

All very pleasant to listen to for a change. Not exactly my favourite style, but half decent for sure. Gets the 4 for being a bit different.

I had never listened to this album before, but I am glad that I have now. This album was very easy to listen to. I expected an album to sound like a time capsule of it's age, but it has a timelessness that makes me want to add to it my collection.

The title and the vibe hit different worlds, but this is great. Jazz focused and easy to listen to. Cool album.

The opening track had me doing freestyle Blues lyrics. A really nice listen to just get lost in.

Jazz for cool cats.

Instrumental organ-driven blues with jazz saxophone. Track 1 mainly blues (reminds me of The Doors), track 2 mainly jazz (a la Coltrane)! Minor Chant is nicely in between the two extremes! Few passages/transitions raise my eyebrows and a smile! At it's extremes the jazz is too opaque, and the blues too predictable. But when balanced well it's magic. Best track - Back at the Chicken Shack, Minor Chant 4 stars

Very pleasant listening. The band is talented. The songs are long and it's pretty samey, but I can't really complain about this. Nice smooth instrumental jazzy music.

This was an enjoyable listen as I've always loved the sax this one played by Stan Turrentine and the organ played by Jimmy Smith. The fusion of these instruments sounded both interesting n pleasing. The Hammond B-3 was legendary in the 60s. Somehow this album n Mr. Smith never made it to my listening booth. Very pleased to have discovered him now!!
