Digging this smooth jazz on a lazy Saturday.

I imagine this what Mr. Fantastic listens to to unwind after a hard fought battle with Dr. DOOM. Then Johnny Storm comes in and calls him a SQUARE. Ben clobbers Johnny up side his head & Sue tells them all to BE NICE. 4

Felt like a great bit of background music. It did lack a little something to make it more interesting though. Very enjoyable nonetheless

Incredible playing on an instrument I am less familiar with. Try this blues record to listen to fantastic blues without guitar leads. The recording itself sounds deep with lots of room for the band members to be heard.

Classic jazzy blues. Solid album.

Great. Fun stuff.

My Rating 3.6

Only listened to two tracks but I enjoyed it despite preferring my jazz crazy

Need on Vinyl

Really did not expect to enjoy this album as much as I did. The organ really helped bring the album together.

Needed this

simple calm jazz would not mind hearing it again 4/5

i liked the synth, good passive music

I don’t typically like jazz but I really loved this.

The album cover earned it a one-point higher rating.

definitely the sound track for some moments of my life, the kind of music to play on the background but not in a boring/annoying way

great jazz

Funky jazz blues, hammond organ Back at the chicken shack

Very nice

Sounds pretty. Wikipedia describes the genre as "soul jazz. Hard bop". I would agree

Nice elevator music

Maybe it’s just because I watched Whiplash but that jazz was hittin pretty good.

Vibes. Was a good album to work to/ enjoy my morning walk.

I had heard of Jimmy Smith, but this album was definitely something that hadn't crossed my path. I enjoyed it. Its clearly done by very talented musicians and has a lovely vibe. Its not something I loved, but absolutley can appreciate it. Worth listening to (even if Jazz isnt your bag).

Pretty fun stuff! I have a soft spot for organ music. I used to have a Hammond organ. The album was short and smooth and he seems like a cool dude. This made me feel cool by association.

Fun, funky, good-mood kinda music.

Album 9 Top 3 favorites off the album: Minor Chant, When I Grow Too Old To Dream, On The Sunny Side Of The Street Un-shrimped my posture at my desk when I heard Chopin quoted in Minor Chant. It seems silly to do 3 favorite tracks because it's 5 tracks long, but what the hell, right? This was good background music. That Chopin really did catch me. I was grooving. It was nice! I love how smooth the album was as a whole, huge fan of guitar in jazz, and this album had a nice warmth to it. I was in a good mood listening to it. I think I will also go back to the chicken shack for another listen.

𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘤𝘬 is a great example of how refreshing jazz can sound when the Hammond organ takes the lead. Jimmy Smith’s playing is warm, groovy and full of personality, giving the music a relaxed but deeply rhythmic feel. The band swings effortlessly around him, creating a tight, bluesy atmosphere that’s smooth without ever becoming dull. It’s a distinctive, inviting sound — something a bit different from more traditional jazz setups — and that’s exactly what makes the album so enjoyable.

Very good I like a good jazz moment this was a nice break

I love this! The older I get, the more of a pull I feel towards jazz in general. It’s not about memorizing songs or letting the angst out anymore. It’s about floating down a river of feeling and emotion. This album is super chill and the binding of love comes from the organ. It makes me feel like I’m on vacation sipping on a kombucha at the swinging lounge in the Holiday Inn.

More jazz I love! There’s such a lushness in the spareness here. It’s music that feels soul nourishing.

Not something I would have ever chosen to listen to, but I don't hate it. I've never even heard of Jimmy Smith who apparently is quite well-known in the industry. I think it's the "soul" with the jazz that makes it more appealing to me compared to a more classical jazz sound. It's definitely something I could put on in the background and enjoy.

Had no idea what to expect with this album. So far it’s jazzy, blues, very soulful piano riffs. Saxophone is also very lively, it gives it a very playful vibe. It’s actually really fun to listen to. I love jazz. This jazz makes me want to dance and spin around. Jimmy plays the organ so passionately, you can tell he just goes with his heart and has fun with it

Groovy baby.

great flow and sounds which aren’t as common now.

P good

It’s good but doesn’t do anything to make it stand apart from a lot of other jazz I can think of.

When I was a kid, maybe about 7 years old, my Great Grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. We got the whole family together to celebrate at my Nanna's house, they opened their letter from the Queen in front of everyone (we're Australian, so we get those), there was food, there was cake, there were speeches... and there was a performance. You see, I come from quite a musical family, especially on my Dad's side, so as part of this celebration we had organised a surprise for them - a rendition of "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", an appropriate song for the occasion, but also as I understand one of their favourites. Good old Hammerstein! Our family isn't huge (and certainly was less so at the time), but there were still enough family members to provide a full choral arrangement accompanied on keyboard by their eldest Great Grandson, little 7-year-old me. I worked hard to learn that song. It wasn't a particularly advanced arrangement of course, but no less beautiful. I practiced for weeks, got nerves on the day and made plenty of mistakes I'm sure... But it didn't matter. What shone through in that moment was not whether I played well or not, it was the love that these two had for each other as they joined in singing, my Great Grandfather's tremendous, almost operatic voice singing out unending love for his wife of 60 wonderful years, surrounded by generations of the family they had made together. But holy shit, Jimmy Smith's version of it is jazzy as fuck! I was only 7, I didn't even know that was an option, my guy! If I'd have known you were allowed go this hard on that song I would've put that stank on it for SURE hot damn.

Cool stuff no doubt

A classic cooker from the voluminous Smith archives. Absolutely in the upper tier of his discography.

¿A quien no le va a gustar Jimmy Smith tocando el órgano?

I don’t know much about jazz, but I do know that I enjoyed this album. I think I’ve heard the opening track somewhere before. Bonus points for the cool album cover.

All jazz and instrumental.

This is instantly going on at the next dinner party. Perfect for a chill night with a bottle a Cabernet and a few friends. No notes. Very pleasant.

Great, smooth, laidback session with Stanley Turrentine and Kenny Burrell often outshining Smith himself. Not a record I'd put on to sit down and taken in often. Rather one to put on in the background while cooking, reading or having guests.

Cool cool jazz. Love that organ! Favorite tracks-All 5

That was fantastic until the saxophone came in. The first track had me thinking this is a solid 5 but then the bloody saxophone drowned everything else out. I'm looking forward to listening to more Jimmy Smith as long as he left the sax player at home. Four stars for letting me discover this artist, minus one for the irritating instrument.

i love the grovy vibe makes me want to bake or clean would also be nice during a dinner

I thought it would be generic soul music but it was actually enjoyable.

Fantastic record by a notable artist. Not much to say other than the organ is a fantastic addition to Jazz pieces.

really love this music, but I wish there was a little more song structure with some sort of repeated hook or instrumental story-telling of sort. maybe it's there and I'm just missing it though

I’m not usually a fan of the organ but Jimmy makes it swing so hard - this is infectious stuff

I enjoyed this chilled jazz album. I listened to it while doing housework, but I think it would sound best while you read a book with a glass of red wine.

Just looking at the red shirt first 🧐 Really like this one, been listening to a lot of Jimmy after the intro. Fun to listen to

I'd never heard of The Incredible Jimmy Smith before, so I wasn't sure what I'd make of this. As it turns out it was great! Early 1960's jax with funky electronic piano and sax. What more could you ask for on a lazy Saturday evening. I don't know how this fits chronologically with other similar jazz musicians/albums. I definitely recognise the style so if this was influential then I guess it pre-dates the others.

Earlier this week Kind of Blue from Miles Davis came up on the generator, so I got to listen to the album many consider the greatest jazz album ever made. It was very interesting to have this record come up so soon after that, as they were so different in so many ways but it made for an interesting comparison. I really enjoyed the musicianship of the Davis album, and respected what I. heard. But in some ways I actually enjoyed listening to this record even more than that. I found this to be more fun, and it kept my interest in ways that didn't. While the actual playing wasn't as technically great, I got the feeling they were enjoying themselves quite a bit while they were making the record. My main complaint is that the songs generally felt very similar, so I wasn't always aware when one song ended the next began. But this isn't a huge complaint.

5 songs, 45 minutes - fair play. Let’s see how it flows… Really nice opening and can get why someone said “I’ll save this for dinner parties with my intelligent friends” 😂maybe expected vocals too but might be getting him up with someone else… A very pleasant album with a lot of depth and skill. Would like to come back to listen again

Bluesy, jazzy, organ. Fun stuff

This is not the album I was expecting when I saw the cover, but I enjoyed the organ jazz.

Instrumental - Jazzy

I really like the tempo of a lot of these. Super enjoyable to listen to and I’ve learned that I like this genre a lot through this project 🙂‍↕️ not sure what else to say but this was a fun listen! Fav songs: when I grow too old to dream, on the sunny side of the street

4/5 deserves to be on this list Jimmy Smith is crazy good on the B3! Stanley Turrentine is super good too. Jazz soul is a very enjoyable genre imo so I really liked this. The tempo push and pull between the drumming and organ is really interesting. Overall not as clearly visionary and crazy as some of the jazz on here, but it’s fun and a lot more technical than it sounds. Feels like 4 people just casually jamming. Standout Tracks: Back At The Chicken Shack

Very nice, albeit generic, background music.

A fun keyboard jab with plenty of smooth saxophone lines. Not my bread and butter but a really relaxing album. Would play nice in a coffee shop.

Love the organ soft jazz funk

There is a clean, jazz tinted quality to the album's sound. Even when it borders on the dull side, the playful jazz nuances give it a subtle spark of fun.

never gonna be a jazz guy but this was easy to listen to

Really good. A bit repetitive but enjoyed.

As jazz albums go I quite enjoyed this one. Not something I sold listen to on the regular but yes something I would reach for during a dinner party. 4/5

Fun album, very early blues progressions. No singing but never felt like it was missing something. All the songs sort of flow into one. Enjoyed it overall.

Although I own and know a lot of jazz classics I haven't come across this, so thanks 1001 for the introduction! A great mix, reminding me of Brother Jack McDuff at times with the organ. Funky, Jazzy and Bluesy in turn. Bears repeat listening and apparently has a sister album with the same red jumper on the sleeve so I'll have to check that out!

Oh this was awesome. Really, really enjoyed this. Felt like I shouldn't have because I don't care for a lot of jazz music and I don't like organ music but this just hit different in a big way. It's great kitchen music (that's not a slam, in fact it's a big compliment from my perspective) and it's also great to zone out to while working. I wouldn't listen to this on a roadtrip in the car, but I can definitely see myself coming back to this. Great album.

nice but not typically my mood

Infectious, sounds great, just great groove music

Piano was neat and overall a good album. Not very knowledgable about jazz, especially during this period but a good listen.

Which one? Hopefully, a Cajun version.

Loved this

I’d be going to jazz clubs all the time if this was the norm. Felt like a good mix of horns and keys with subtle percussion, instead of individual abrasive performances being showcased.

Title track is fucking great. This guy can play the hell out of the organ. From the first note, I knew I was gonna like this. On the Sunny Side of the Street is a jazz classic - a lot of New Orleans musicians I love have done this one. And Jimmy’s version is awesome. This is top tier jazz. It’s not some avant-garde written by a haughty dipshit. Soulful and delicious.

Awesome album, enjoyed from start to finish, maybe wished it was even a tad longer.

I was walking down the street listening to this on a bluetooth speaker and everyone I passed by tipped their cap and gave me a pleasant smile. Beautiful women way out of my league winked at me. One approached me and slid me a slip of paper that read, "Call me... there's just something about you that I find irresistible [heart emojis]... Debra - 555-183-8375" When I got home I had to hide the note so that my wife wouldn't find it. All I'm saying is, be careful with this gem. Jimmy Smith is going to take you on an adventure.

Jimmy and the organ! Liked it a lot!

Nice instrumentals with some great musicianship.

Favorite: When I grow too old to dream

My experience with Jazz is limited to the obvious stuff (Coltrane, Davis, etc.), so I had never heard this before. Every bit as enjoyable as those guys. Great record.

Nice album, not much else to say

I like it. I have stayed away from jazz for a while and forget that there is stuff like this that I can enjoy.

Smooth

Nice vibe for background music.

Some smooth, cool jazz. Nothing too wild here. Really enjoyable and relaxed vibes.

I like jazz and since its early November, it was the perfect time to listen to the album. It helps me study and focus so it was pretty calming for me to have those long 12 minute tracks. Normally, I would be against listening songs for that long but since it's jazz I don't mind it that much.

absolutely loved this

More albums like this, less Britpop. Really did enjoy this album. 4/5

Favs: todas!!

Pretty smooth

Lovely little jazz dinner party 3.8

i'm back at the chicken shack. i'm back at the jazz club. i'm back at the combination chicken shack/jazz club

Chill time.

This is like simcity background music. I love it. After a while I do need to hear something different, but overall it's quite enjoyable.

35mins of peak studying jazz music to listen to whilst you have to lock in because the deadline of your assignment is in a few hours...

Just a brilliant jazz album, just smooth and great for the ears.

I love organ

Folksy jazz. Pretty chill

Can we take a moment to appreciate this album cover? 10/10 no notes. I had no idea what to expect when I pressed play on this album but what I found I very much enjoyed. Jimmy Smith apparently popularized using the Hammond organ in jazz music and it created such a unique and enjoyable vibe. One I will have to remember to return to in the future. I also need to check out his other stuff. He has a Christmas album and a version of Peter and the Wolf I want to listen to.

Great listen. There's something about the warm, nostalgic tone of the Hammond organ, which Jimmy Smith plays with such playfully light fingers here, that feels like a cold glass of iced lemonade on a hot summer day. At times on the album it feels like the bright brassiness of the sax drowns out Smith's playing, but I'm really just being pedantic. Will run through again. fav tracks: Minor Chant

easy listen, jazzy and fun but also listening to the album in the background while doing other things it is sorta easy to tune out. especially with no words, it's a bit difficult for me to pay particular attention to any particular song. also my attention span is generally too cooked for these 6+ min songs. this is generally how i feel about jazz; i have listened to kind of blue and a love supreme several times each but i can only remember that in one of the songs on a love supreme they repeat the eponymous line. i like the names of the songs on this album though, esp "when i grow too old to dream"

So this is where Jimmy’s Chicken Shack got their name. Jimmy Smith is sooo much better. A delight.

Okkk Jazz!!

Loved listening to this while I cooked.

Simply sublime. Not usually a fan of this type of music, but this is great. 4/5

Para esos años, es una joya de jazz. Agradable

Nice Jazz. Some good solos. Nice to have on in the background and chill while working.

Nice jazz album, with some hints of blues in the first theme.

Great jazz, great album. The big innovation here was putting the organ forward and using this as a means of fusing soul and jazz. Whether or not you like the result personally (I do), these creative innovations beget others. Artists who spark new innovations warrant out notice and respect.

I enjoyed this well enough. It's good background music.

Solid jazz with good vibes. I don't really have enough experience with jazz to really tell if this is great or just good, but I enjoyed it

Chilled and accessible jazz. The sax was actually the standout for me rather than the organ. Fav track: Messy Bessie

Love his style, like NYC in the 70s (I was not alive then but it sounds right)

That was an excellent listen for this Sunday morning. Adore that organ playing, and the interplay is just fabulous. Not very knowledgeable about Mr Smith but very influential though turns out you may not have wanted to see him live in later years. Definitely be checking out more of his catalogue . 4 Star

I love the little fun fact in the Wikipedia blurb for this about him recording two albums in the same session and wearing the same shirt in both, adds the kind of continuity that isn't at all necessary but makes the guy a lot more memorable. Anyways, good Jazz. It's really upbeat with a lot of good lines throughout and I love Jimmy Smith's tenor tone. I'll definitely be Back at the Chicken Shack more often.

Fun listen, very much in the style of Booker T. Kind of surprised that this was by Blue Note, it's much more linked to Soul and Blues. The songs blend together and kind of fly by. I feel like it's a great album for background listening, but he's done more interesting albums in his career. I got a soft spot for Organ-centered Jazz though.

Bopping jazz

Organ x Saxophone is what I will hear greeting me at the pearly gates. Loving the Lord(e) delivers me jazzy albums when I'm overindulged on le French vin. The drum beat is a sexy caress. Slay typography, case & point in using the same font & weight but using hierarchy of pt size and colour. Wonder why it was released 3 years after recording. Favourite instrument list updated: Fender Stratocaster & Hammond B3 organ.

I’m an ignorant mofo, which is partly why I’m doing this project. Why did I think Jimmy Smith was reggae from the cover, and didn’t even notice the Blue Note label? This is just some tasty, tasty midcentury jazz. Timeless, classic, cool, sophisticated. I love it.

Lovely jazz with a much underestimated instrument in the jazz world. Listen to musicians like Barbara Dennerlein or Dr. Lonnie Smith and you might really get the hang of it. This album shows the greatness of Jimmy Smith. An album well worth listening to despite its age.

I think I liked it I'm definitely going to recommend it to my two friends who like the saxophone.

One of the most fascinating aspects of music is how it can completely hijack my physiology. The rhythms in which I move and the moods in which I’m thinking. My jazz education is weak, and it always takes me awhile to switch gears to the jazz mindset. But once I do, it’s good it’s good. This one took a couple tracks, so I had to listen through a couple times. Once I was vibing: it’s good it’s good.

Went down a treat on a lazy Saturday morning

Didn’t think I could like the organ so much. Real easy to listen to as well

Pretty sweet grooves. Could listen to this type of stuff all day, but didn't totally want to repeat it when it was over.

I loved the organ- I have never heard an organ used in jazz and it takes years to learn how to play an organ. Such a cool and unexpected sound, I had to look up what instrument he was using. Very smooth and nice to listen to while I study.

Nice album. First time I hear it, but won’t be the last. 4/5

Great Jazz album. Loved the electric organ and sax especially. Simple yet complex album (like a lot of excellent jazz)! 4⭐️

Nice to put on in the background at home while I pretend to be at a jazz bar (in reality, I’m sat in bed)

This made me feel like I was Back At The Chicken Shack!

Did not know what to expect but I really liked it .Seems very jazzy .

Gear: ZiiGaat x Hangout.Audio: Odyssey 2 Artwork: 🐓🐕🌽 Production (Rudy Van Gelder Remaster): 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🎹🍽️🎷 Rating: 🐣🐣🐣(🐣)/5

Soothes my haggard soul. Glad I heard it and can save it for later. This would pop off on a rainy day. Or a sunny day with the chickens, for that matter.

Good grooves

Groovy doesn't even do it justice. I liked it so much, we listened twice. Amazing!

It really is great for what it is, a great mood! It don't stand out or have catchy memorable melodies but I almost feel transported by it playing. I really enjoyed it!

Going in my jazz rotation.

Riktigt bra album. Häftigt med så gammal instrumental musik. Hade ingen koll på den här artisten innan men han var fantastisk.

Smooth grooves all the way through what a treat

I'll be back. Cracking little party this

Loved it: great easy instrumentals

9/3/25. Smooth stuff here, love the organ sound. Need to dive in Jimmy Smith's records.

This sure is some great laid back jazz from Jimmy and the boys.

Never heard of Jimmy Smith before. I wasn't expecting a jazz album from the title and cover. But that having been said, album is quite cool!

low beat jazz jazzorganist mit sax

Oikeesti ihan bängeri.

Really cool. I love Jimmy smith. There are some awesome changes here and they are handled so beautifully on that organ. I think I prefer his big band sound (not necessarily with a big band but when he plays in the style) but this is still fantastic. Hoping the cat comes up!

What a vibe. Throughly enjoyable

Super chilled-out and smooth. Not a single moment where I'm not enjoying what I'm listening to. I think the organ kind of outclasses every other instrument here, though. Would definitely vibe out to this again- actually super calming.

Great album by one of my favorite artists. Will listen again. Would enjoy owning. Some fantastic but approachable soul-jazz.

My brother introduced me to this album way back and I could listen to it forever. The title track is a treat... it's good to be back at the chicken shack.

jazz delicioso

Solid selection to represent the soul-jazz category, but maybe not the most interesting from the genre. Jimmy Smith can lay it down, but the blues progressions fade into the background a little too easily. Maybe a selection of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery together, maybe some Lou Donaldson, or go off the script and look for some Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones for some more interesting soul jazz (it's a rabbit hole of a genre). Jimmy Smith surely had some influence on Ray Manzarek (Doors) by providing the bassline for these tracks. Good music for the background of a conversation.

I like

Some awesome Hammond organ workouts with swinging, jazzy rhythm and blues. Recorded quickly in a single day, this helps the music to retain a freshness and vitality. It's not a monumental album, but it is a very good example of the genre. Terrible LP cover mind you

Yeah, just the summer jazz vibes I needed for wandering in the sunshine.

Do you know where I wanna be? ...that's right, back at the Chicken Shack!

Superb

I do like jazz, but honestly only in specific situations, like a fancy restaurant, 1.5 glasses of wine into the evening, while delicately eating lobster tail and filet minion, provided I was not vegitarian. I can see myself swaying a little in my chair. This artist was very good and somehow stopped me from speeding while listening. 4 stars was giving because this would not be an album I would purchase to have in my music library, if I had one 😁

Really great. Instantly enamoured with the organ; works wonderfully with the sax. Man, I should listen to more jazz. 8/10 Favorites: Back at the Chicken Shack, Minor Chant

Great blues album

Great musicianship for this instrumental album.

I've always wanted to like Jimmy more than I do. Is there such a thing as too much groove?

Great sax

The keys were nice

I've been on a bit of jazz listening kick lately so this comes at a good time. I like a lot of jazz stuff, haven't heard this album before, or of Jimmy Smith so I guess that just goes to show how little I do really know about jazz in terms of listening to a lot of different tracks and artists First track I'm guessing Jimmy is the keys player as it's prominent. Im listening to the Rudy Van Gelder edition on Youtube, now that name is familiar as I've listened to Wayne shorter album speak no evil the Rudy Van Gelder edition. No idea who Rudy is, but probably a very important guy I imagine. First track is a nice 12 bar shuffle, very chill and laid back. Kenny Burrell is on the guitar, I've heard of him before, but again couldn't name any of his tracks. This second track is nice, very cool I love the bass. This whole album is very chill so far, I don't know if i was expecting some kind of hard bebop because of the Blue note record, but it's very smooth. This one sounds like a more standard 2-5-1 thing. I could be completely wrong, but sounds more like a contemporary jazz standard. If this was the 60s this is probably a full on old organ he's playing too, not just a piano. I know very little about organs but I recently learned that even though it looks like a piano it's very very different to play. Is he doing the bass all with his feet? On the organ that's cool if so, I dont know if there's a bass player on the album. Just read he does it all with his feet

Jazz always puts in a better mood, and this was no exception.

Solid Jazz improv album, I only wish there was even more organ solos. He's a great player but only in the last two songs did the organ take absolute center stage. Side note, is this where that band "Jimmy's Chicken Shack" got their name?

Are the songs a bit too long and noodly? Yes. Did I care? Not really. Really enjoyed this one, this is going next to the Wynton Kelly album I like to play when making the Thanksgiving turkey.

Good stuff.

maked me discorder blues so interesting, also refreshing bc i listen mostly to altrock/rock/lightmetal rn

Fun jazz album. Could listen to this all day

A jazzman I knew nothing about and discovered thanks to this list. I loved this album ! Made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Or maybe that was the whisky. Equally great as background music and for active listening. It’s smooth and relaxing, but never boring. The organ works really well, and there’s a lot of inventivity in each track. I’ll definitely go back to the Chicken Shack !

Bouncy, upbeat, makes you smile. Feels like you should be in a crowded, smokey, casual, old school nightclub a buzz with friends and friends you haven't met yet. The type of background music you'd want for nearly anything from the mundane to the raucous.

Veeery fun

LOVED this

Not a big jazz guy, but really enjoyed this. I particular the title track 🐔👍

Really enjoyed this. Set the perfect background to getting creative in the kitchen while unwinding from work. - 3.5/5

Buddy really is at the chicken shack! I like an album cover that delivers what it promises. There is a man - I presume Jimmy Smith - out at the chicken shack. Now would I call that wire box a shack? Not exactly, and am I to assume that the dog is named Stanley Turrentine? I give this album cover a 4 out of 5. Excellent, but missing some crucial pieces of information. Who is the dog?? Uhh oh. There is music to review. From the Kenny Burrell addition I assume this is jazz. Hook it to my veins. I certainly won’t “bawk” at that!!!!!11!1!1 Back at the Chicken Shack - Oh my sweet lord. This is jazz featuring an organ? Man. We’re off to a flyer. This shit is simple, but it goes oh so hard. If I’m shouting “HELL YEAH” at the start of a saxophone solo, it’s about to be a great Friday. When I Grow Too Old to Dream - We’re getting a little more abstract here. The organ riff underneath everything is fairly straightforward for a bit, but the performances on drums and sax here, take us further in jazz world. This rules. I could just listen to this all day. OH GOD THE BASS organ. Ugh. I’m so happy. Minor Chant - This is what happens during a wrestling match that isn’t that good. A minor chant. Murmuring. Coughing. Fortunately, this song is like an AJPW main event from the early 90’s. This is sending me into hysteria. I believe I may pass out by the time this thing is done. Messy Bessie - Is this the name of the chicken? More of a cow name, but I will allow it. Bless all the kids walking around called Bessie. They need to start wearing bells and just embrace the cow persona. I kid the poor children. Stay tough out there. I believe he is using the organ as a bass. That’s phenomenal. Man I enjoyed the hell out of this. You may say “I didn’t know there was hell in it!” To that I would probably jump off a bridge, leaving the echoes of your lame joke resonating in your mind as you watch me plunge to my death. That’ll learn ya. As far as jazz goes, this isn’t breaking any ground, but I loved it. The organ was a warm addition to the overall ensemble that you would expect from a jazz record of this era. The solos were capable and often had me bobbing my head. Tried to start a mosh pit at home but it’s hard when the only other participant is your pregnant partner. Anyway. Maybe the moshing is better left to the pros, and the organ jazz? Despite what RYM users might say, sometimes it’s ok to listen to jazz that doesn’t immediately transport you to a smoky opium den in depression era New York. Not that I don’t enjoy that trip , but if they’re playing this record, I’ll be out by the chicken shack. Just got my avian flu booster, and I’m hankering for some JAZZ. 4.5 HIGHLIGHTS: You cannot go wrong.

Very fun and funky, would definitely listen to again. I wanted to say something more and I was sure I'd remembered it so I didn't write it down but now I forgot. The first track is my favourite

4/5 Nice

Notre premier album de jazz! Fort agréable, je l’ai écouté en conduisant, le gros soleil dans face, et c’était parfait. Le son chaleureux du hammond Organ était parfait.

That was fun

Cool jazz Great organ sound

Really groovy and chill. This was a nice ride. The drummer is great

I am NOT a jazz fan. However This is a very good album. Smooth, energetic, foot tapping head bopping jazz. It's only five tracks and runs 43 minutes, so the tracks run a little long. It's wonderful music, great for zoning out. My rating: 4/5

Funky groove. Dig it.

jazzy af chicken shack

Nice! Really nice and comfy to listen to.

Albums like this is why I am here. Excellent listen- that I would have never enjoyed otherwise.

Not what I expected. That is some funky organ!

Smooth Jazz

Great feel good jazz record. Great background music

This time I do like jazz!

Nice and enjoyable jazz album, really good to listen to in the background, but also as your main source of inspiration. Nothing too complicated or intricate about it, perfect for casual jazz listener like myself.

I really enjoyed this. It was jazzy, reminded me a lot of "Green Onions". It was nice background music, and I really liked Smith's keyboard work throughout. It did get a little same-y, but you have the same instrumentation throughout that's bound to happen. I honestly thought this was Jimmie's Chicken Shack, but I am glad I was wrong. Really enjoyable. Top tracks: "When I Grow Too Old To Dream,: :Minor Chant," title track.

It is great background music. It might be even better than that - that jazzy organ of Jimmy's is pretty catchy. It feels like what so many smoky, bluesy bands sound like, with the Hammond pouring out of a backdrop of soft drums (brushes?) and bass, plus some sharp guitar and sax. The title track is great. It does sound a little similar throughout so that's a knock. But it feels like a 3.5. Rounding up.

noodly and directionless, but solid early jazz

Never listened to jazz before so can’t really give a good review of it Maybe a 7.1/10??

Pretty good smooth first impression. Wakes you up gently, but makes it's presence known. Overall though i liked it

fun and great vibes but a little repetitive

A fantastic and fun vibe. It's good to sit and listen and to have in the background. Every song lasts just a bit too long, but the variation within them makes up for it.

Jimmy could play that Hammond 👌🏼

Great jazz, of the same organ ilk as Booker T's Green Onions.

solid jazz album

What a gem of an album. I am a sucker for some funky Hammond Organ and Jimmy delivered.

Pleasant and unintrusive jazz.

Nice jazzy album. Good solos, nice sax and trumpet plays. Nice little gem

Some lovely jazz

It's a really enjoyable listen, the only real knock I'd have against this one is that it doesn't offer to much in the way of variety. I'm not going to call it a one trick pony like I would say about its contemporary on this list, Green Onions, but it's a bit too one tracked to get a five from me. Still a really solid album.

82% Best: Back At The Chicken Shack; Messy Bessy Must-Hear? Sure

I've def heard a lot of this and had no idea what it was from! How fun! It sounds like a classic and a bright sunshiney day on a chicken farm. What a classic!

Yes, Want this on vinyl! Consistent funky blues. Classic sound, great for a drive or dinner. Love

Nice relaxing ambient music. Nothing crazy but just solid jazz.

Solid blue note early 60s jazz. Nothing mind blowing, but between the great organ comping, Turrantines sad and Kenny Burrells guitar, this is elevated to another level.

Jimmy Smith is the man. So smooth. So good.

Du jazz qui joue les bonnes notes au bon moment, c'est quand même plus sympathique.

I love Jimmy Smith!

Damn, groovy. Nu heb ik zin om een Old Fashioned te drinken in een bar met iets te weinig lichtinval. En het is momenteel 8:22 in de ochtend. 4.1

4/5 Some enjoyable jazz.

Nawet spoko jazz

Man I woulda loved this in college.

This is a great album to have chilling in the background.

Very enjoyable and smooth. Loved how the organ is not always the star of the song even though its his main instrument. Glad to have listened and want to listen to more by him.

Bello l'Hammond

A fantastic album for jazz lovers.

So smooth so jazzy. No notes.

I've listened to this a dozen times over the years - it never makes a huge impression on me, but it's always delightful in the moment.

Finally!!! I was wondering when I was gonna see a jazz artist on Blue Note with engineering from the great Rudy Van Gelder. And even though I'm not terribly familiar with Jimmy Smith, there's no denying this is great lazy Sunday afternoon listening. This is a great entry point for jazz -- not terribly heavy on the riffing and improv. Just enough to feel the back and forth and vibing. Bring on more from Blue Note!

He’ll yeah

dobry jazz

8/10. Pleasant jazz.

Shmooth

The Good: An album that clearly explains where we are! The Bad: Our destination being a shack instead of a palace… The Ugly: Trying to get all the chicken poo out of the shack… When I was a younger lad, I would choose my books based on the cover art… and I believe that, for a little while, when I started buying albums, at times, I would apply that same principle: you can imagine what my thought was about this album based on the cover… Chalk one up for the ol’ saying about judging based on cover. I don’t believe I have ever heard anything from Jimmy, till this album, which makes sense, as it is jazz music, and I tend not to own jazz music—which isn’t to say that I don’t like jazz music, just not enough to invest in… Anyway, I enjoyed the album, as it is of the easy-listening kind, though the electric organ gets on my nerves after a while… I have the same thing with Booker T and his MGs… Will I play this album again? If i remember… I need to start creating a list of the 4* and 5* albums and make sure I listen to them again… maybe I need to go to 3* at times, and listen to those too? The Chicken Shack… I just realized… there are a boatload of CK’s in that title, is this where Louis CK got his name from? 4*

Man. This thing rocked. Why was the cover so bad?

Loved this! Smooth and chill.

Длинные полотна, органист не перетягивает на себя одеяло. Но как-то нет безуминки, всё ровно чисто и гладко.

Nice jazz grooves with a hint of soul. I enjoyed it even though I'm still not a jazz fan (but I might be soon).

слушал с утречка, пока готовил завтрак - и прям кайфанул.

It's good for Jazz. Not my thing, though

Never heard of the artist before, don't know what to expect in terms of genre I actually ended up liking it quite a bit!

Pure vibes, all the way. Those vibes are a bit repetitive and so it all blends together, but what a great time it is. Special shout out to the cover of “Sunny Side of the Street” at the end.

Back at the Chicken Shack When I Grow Too Old to Dream i had to check to see what instrument Smith played- i love that he is able to take a backseat to the saxophonist on these tracks Minor Chant and then on the very next song, he completely takes control Messy Bessie On the Sunny Side of the Street

first track was reallyyyy great!! I do not usually hear blues organ in jazz, was like halfway between jazz and blues but then the other tracks were like pretty standard hard bop which was good but not the most exciting 3.5/5

This is like the Goldilocks of jazz albums! Not too mellow, not too crazy, not too boring not too out there... Feels "just right". This would probably be a very accessible starting point for someone who says they don't like jazz. The organ makes it a little less serious but the musicianship is still super impressive. Will listen to this one again.

Loved the feel of this album.

Timeless vibes on this one. This is one of those albums that could be from one of at least six decades.

I'm not sure why this album makes the list over multitudes of similar, very accessible jazz works, but it is good entry level stuff for people wanting to dip the toe.

Chill vibes; good times

I was not familiar with Jimmy Smith or any of his music prior to this listen. And I have to say, Back at the Chicken Shack was a very enjoyable experience. I always worry about songs with long runtimes but I didn’t get tired of any of these. I saw a good amount of people say this is good background music but I tend to think Back at the Chicken Shack is better than just background music. I really enjoyed the organ and just the overall musicianship throughout the album. Not a bad track on here. I will add this to my library. It’s a 4 for me. 4/5

Great vibes. Good music to Chill to

****a good instrumental album

A really mellow electric piano quartet record. Good playing and very relaxing to listen to.

From what I listened to it was good. Smooth.

Who knew about the history of the organ in jazz?? Jimmy Smith did and now so do I. A pleasant, jazzy album with a super subtle but integral organ track underneath it all.

If all jazz were as smooth and groovy as this record, I'd probably like the genre alot more overall. Great stuff 4.5

This might be another case where I just expected too much. I mean, I look this album up on Wikipedia and I see one of its genres is called "hard bop," I'm preparing myself for some **wild** shit, y'know? Not exactly THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME, but something a little bit more hard hitting than usual. Maybe closer to BITCHES BREW. Something you could Fantasia some crazy imagery to. And yet, when I put it on, the main thing I ended up visualizing in my mind was, like... A swanky casino lounge? One with good taste in music, that didn't go for some chintzy shit, but, like... Is this it? This is hard bop? Oh, it's another album where I hafta corral what I thought I was gonna get so it doesn't affect what I thought of what I actually got... But for real, there is a part of me that can't help but feel a bit underwhelmed. Like, it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination; I'm just not sure if this is something I'd say people should really listen to before they die. That's not even usually something I take into consideration when I'm babbling about an album. Although when you take it into consideration against every other jazz album my group has gotten... And that's unfair, I totally realize that. Like, when you put this up against Miles Davis and Coltrane, of course this is gonna lose. But then I don't think Jimmy was even aiming to make a KIND OF BLUE or GIANT STEPS or whatever... Or maybe even a SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD. You're probably not supposed to consider it with those same deep "listening for the intricacies and complexities" ears. So thus we circle back to the "casino lounge" imagery I conjured up. Which is probably not the right mental image for this album, honestly; I think maybe a nightclub is more the right visual? 'Coz more than any other jazz album my group has gotten yet, this comes across as the kind of jazz you put on as background ambiance. Something to color the scene and keep things a little livelier than having everything exist in silence. And, hey, I'm down for that sort of thing. "Wallpaper" is far from a bad word in my book; I've praised plenty of albums for being good wallpaper. I had this album on while I was putting away dishes and laundry and doing some writing, and... Well, dang, I'll tell yah, it did real good. I'll credit the album's sound to two things. Like, the whole band's nice and tight, don't get me wrong, but specifically, I wanna shout out the organ and the saxophone. That's just a really nice, warm organ, and it's a tone I really love to hear. But then the sax player, meanwhile — woof, he's on another level. To where it feels like it's the star of the album, while the organ itself (played by, as the album cover calls him, the incredible Jimmy Smith) comes across more as the lighter warm-up and intermission. Still great, of course; just working on a slightly lower plane. And that's the size of it. It's a good enough album for what it is. I could see myself returning to it every now and then to score my day. The worst thing I feel like I can say about it is that I'm not sure if it should be here or not, but then it's like, y'know, if Koffi Olomide's straight-up cruise line commercial music can be on this list, why not some nightclub music? And if this ain't still a million times more interesting than Koffi Olomide's shit, goodness me...

Love that jazz piano. Solid 4 Stars.

Lovely jazz. I want to hang out at the chicken shack too.

Pretty solid album all the way through. Not mind blowing, but I'm not a jazz head.

Such a fun album. I was super familiar with the title track, but my favorite here is probably the saxophone feature on Minor Chant. Also, an excellent, loose interpretation of Sunny Side of the Street.

Ok I’m stunned. Excellent! 4.4

Good fun.

A short, solid, and soulful jazz album! I’d never heard of this album or artist before but I very much enjoyed this listen. This is definitely an album I can see myself listening to again and I would recommend it to others!

Love the organ on this cool jazz 4/5

some sophisticated jazz, may have to throw this on for a nice brunch

I love this and “Midnight Special” and play them both regularly. They are two of my favorite jazz records. Zero pretension, 100% fun. A great album.

nice bluesy record, interesting to note that at the end of the progression, they don't use a turn-around dominant but stay on I into the next progression cycle. worth another listen and good for relaxed days at home, cleaning, doing this and that.

Sick Jazz with organ undertones. Really dug it!

Great vibe for messing around in the kitchen and doing meal prep (not to mention, eating). Really appreciate that this guy changed jazz. Do not be fooled by the chicken-- this is not a country record.

Smooth and mellow. Lots of 'chill jazz' YouTube channels are clearly inspired by this dude. Sip some coffee and chill out, man. 4/5

jazz - chill

Great!

Jazz blues or blues jazz. Either way I dig it.

More music should have organs

Organ jazz, from blue note.

Very smooth, and a great raw sound on the recording.

A smooth, creamy high 3

I quite enjoyed this. Pretty chill and easy listening. 4/5

Two stars just because sax. Another star as the other instruments did their jobs too. Never heard of Jimmy Smith, aside from a former wide receiver. Not related. But I like his music.

An organ-lead jazz album is pretty rare for me. He's got some great moments, and the improvisation was always good, even though I could never predict where it was going next.

I feel I don't know enough about jazz to rate this - but very fun very good for school I enjoyed!
