Reviews (page 13 of 13)

Booooooring.

I think this is a decent album and I can see how the smiths/ Morrissey have influenced music. For me personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to put this on and it kind of faded more to background music instead of actively engaging me.

This felt really one dimensional... Not sure if I'll come back to it much

Not really for me. A little to melancholy.

Standard Smiths fare. "I wish you an Unhappy Birthday, 'cause you're evil and you lie." Okay. Sure, Morrissey. "Death At One's Elbow" was a nice change of pace, though. And the first song "A Rush and A Push and The Land Is Ours" was pretty good, but the rest was just bunch of whining Morrissey. Nope, not needing to hear it again. NEXT.

all the songs sound the same and they aren't particularly fun or interesting. almost indistinguishable from Morrissey's solo works

Not my thing

2.5 stars. Boring, nothing really caught me.

I've never likes The Smiths - I can't bear Morrisey's voice, but I did manage to listen to this and could appreciate some of it musically. I'm really not a fan though.

Overall -it sounds like when people figure out how to use photo editing softwares and completely over do it because they can -if they pulled back the electronics it would of been better -the songs alone are good, as an album this is not it -the guitar is far stronger than the melody’s -the back half is a lot better -I am torn, it’s probably a 3 but I struggled so hard to make it to the good stuff A Rush and a Push and the Land is -it’s kinda giving EDM vibes? Like a hint of Avicii in the beginning I Started Something I couldn’t Finish -kind of jazzy? death of a disco dancer -it’s like giving big 80s slow dance energy -i like the guitar girlfriend in a coma -brooo what’s the through line here -oh shit the violins -ok the strings fuck Unhappy Birthday -I am HOWLING, this is iconic Paint a Vulgar -the guitar is fantastic

For me this album had its ups and downs. The first song really had me invested but the following songs did not live up to my expectations. In my opinion, the pacing for singing and the music was not pleasing to my ears. The singing seemed either too fast for the music. It makes me feel annoyed while listening because I’m waiting for either the music or the singing to pick up the pace but it never does.

First we have to say that this album is the follow up to one of alt rock all time best album of all time: The Queen Is Dead, so its a hard album to macth I never listen to it and i'm not a big Smith fan but i'll try. I think is one of their tradmark but the song tittle are very long, i coudn,t remeber one by heart To be honnest i wasn't impress by this one, none of those song really make a mark on me and yeah kinda disapointed but i know they are a great band but they have better reccord.

Much less whiny than Your Arsenal, but this album mostly is better because it is short.

I love the Smiths 👁️👁️

No real melodies or hook. Slightly over produced. Meh

I just couldn't get into this album. Absolutely nothing and that makes me feel sad, or maybe it's the music made me sad.

Didn't dislike, but won't revisit.

I like The Smiths but this is fine

Didn't love it 2 or 3 songs ok. Morrissey is a flower

2/5 forgettable if not for a banger or two

too depressing

Unique sound but not so much my type

Not great but more my era of ,music growing up

the orchestration and production are great, but I'm not going to. remember this album

It was just ok. Nothing really stood out much to me. It did not do much for me, but in fairness I owe it another listen before giving up on it.

Next 5 songs played by my Spotify Algorithm: Blondie - Hanging on the Telephone The Jam - All Mod Cons The Sundays -I Kicked a Boy XTC - Earn Enough for Us Wire - Fragile

Well, it's an album.

I really don't like Morrissey

Cant get into the smiths

You could tell me this was written and performed by an AI and I would say the AI could do with some work. 2.

- a lot of eeerrrrrrrrrrrghhhh? noises - baseline in i started something i couldn’t finish>>> - surprisingly vibey, danceable - nvm - death of a disco dancer, baseline again johnny marr? are you responsible for this? - girlfriend in a coma is … alarmingly upbeat. - getting annoyed that i haven’t listened to this in full before. it’s good. annoyingly good. - lastnight i dreamt that somebody loved me is probably one of my fav smiths songs but man it hurts and i wish i didn’t relate to it so much but here we are. moody and blue. “no hope, no harm. just another false alarm” i’ve always loved that lyric. - sycophantic is a good word but i’m not overly attached to this song - johnny marr is a great musician - starting to feel a bit mopey - reached death at ones elbow, i’m glad it’s picked up again. the instrumental is great. - i won’t share you finishes the album off, i get it but sigh… overall, the first few songs were good but it mostly went downhill from there. i still don’t like morrissey.

Not really a smiths/Morrissey fan but this is listenable.

This isn't really hitting for me. It's missing something that other smith's songs have. Like maybe self degradation. The lyrics jusy seem spiteful and really rely too much on repetition. Rhythm section is good though. I don't hate it but it's underwhelming. 2.5 Repeats: I started something I couldn't finish Skips: girlfriend in a coma

It is classic Smiths. In particular, the trilogy of Girlfriend in a Coma, Last Night I Dreamt…, and Stop Me If You Think… are great songs. Unhappy Birthday is of course Morrissey at his darkly wittiest. Overall, besides the classic songs, it’s an album I can take or leave. It’s good - but not essential. I think the Smiths have done better, too.

Not the Smiths again

No thanks, morrissey is moan and nothing without Johnny marr

Quite a mediocre album from my perspective. I never really got into The Smiths aside from their 2 or 3 hits and this album didn’t particularly encourage me to try more.

okayish, nothing I will remember

One of the most annoying vocal styles I’ve heard, with lyrics that ramble and melodies that don’t even sound musical. The best songs are the ones that depart from the sound one would usually associate with The Smiths.

It's... interesting for sure. No stand out tracks for me, I feel all the songs were the same.

I got war flashbacks from having to hear Morrissey 's voice again. Why does this book like his music so much his voice is so irritating!

Not as good as the Queen Is Dead but has a few decent tunes. Morrissey's voice is an acquired taste but he does write some killer lyrics.

# 94 : I could listen to it as background music, in a pinch, but nothing stood out and made me take notice. Not real good for an album that is supposed to be the BEST Smiths record. Makes me shudder to imagine what the other ones are like... Favourite Track : Unhappy Birthday Listened : 24/10/2023

Could not wait for this album to end.

2/5 Klassischer britischer Alternative-Rock. Nicht ganz mein Geschmack. Dennoch einige Highlights.

It's records like this that make me wish this list wasn't curated by a bunch of Brits.

Perus britti-rock-pop levy, ei päjähtänyt

The Smiths Strangeways, Here we come: Drab, fairly boring. Barely held my attention.

Didn't pick up on anything particularly remarkable

Still not the biggest Smiths/Morrissey fan, but this was not the worst. Some of the songs are decently enjoyable.

Way too plain for my taste

Eh, I get why people dislike this.

overall sound is great, the singers voice is grating. not for me.

Honestly all sounded the same to me. Unremarkable.

BL: I have listened to this album before, after this generator put me onto \"The Queen is Dead\" I sought out and listened to the three other studio efforts from the Morrisey and Marr dynasty. I personally found this album to be their weakest on first listen (excluding Hatful of Hollow), and it almost feels like you can feel the disputes between the creatives on this album, as the sonic cohesion on this album is nowhere near as powerful and refined here. I'll see what I think on a second listen. AL: felt pretty much the same way on the relisten as I did the first time I heard it. Still a very enjoyable listen though. FT: “a rush and a push and the land is ours”, “last night I dreamt somebody loved me” 2/5

not for me, singer takes over the sound and it's all in the same tone throughout so sounds like one song on repeat - that said I did enjoy it more than I thought I would

Niet mijn stijl

Gen X has too much of a chokehold on this list overall and the over representation of Moz is evidence. I like the Smiths but I don’t think this is an essential record in the slightest. Its high points simply aren’t that high.

Nobody carried anybody here because this album sucked.

Music good. Morrissey shit

There will be stretches where I enjoy this albums, but then Morrisey ruins it. I enjoyed the instrumental section of Death of a Disco Dancer, but then the next track was melodramatic rubbish. I’ve been trying to have an open mind and hear what so many other people hear, but I just don’t get Morrisey.

Sorry Morrissey, being a misanthrope just isn’t as entertaining as you think it is. Even Rourke can’t save you on this one.

The hopelessness on display, combined with Morrissey's ego, is too much for the record to shine.

I can now say that I gave ‘The Smiths’ a fair try. Not my flavor.

Not as 80's sounding as I expected, but I didn't love it.

I don't really like it. I'm a fair-weather fan of The Smiths and now I know why

It was kinda trippy and there were some good songs, but overall not really my thing

Muzikaal is het her en der best aardig, maar dit heeft weer zo'n stomme jaren '80 stijl stem. Ik val misschien in herhaling, maar ik vind dat echt niks. Gewoon die stijl van zingen, nee.

Not into it

Not horrible but ... unengaging. As in "left me shrugging". *sigh* 2/5

I didn't want to tear my ears off like other Smiths albums. Still doesn't make it good.

Overall enjoyed the album's proto-punk style generally as a one-off. Nothing standout except for one or so. Lyrics were pretty odd, but nothing extreme. Just not what I expected. Overall, fine.

I normally don’t like The Smiths that much but I haven’t heard this album so let’s see…first song and Morrissey is growling at me? Oh wait, he’s still doing it in the second song. He finally stopped growling but my opinion of The Smiths hasn’t changed, nothing incredible or groundbreaking.

Yeah there was some interesting stuff here, but equally some weird songs I’ve no interest in returning to.

así empezamos, y después terminás queriendo más a un pancho q a una persona

The Smiths had pretty much run out of steam by '87. There's little of the original anger passion from the first three albums here. You can see why Strangeways was the album that ended it all. Marr's music is stronger than Morrissey's lyrics. A few gems poke through - Girlfriend in a Coma is great. But otherwise it's not the first Smiths albums you reach for, if indeed you reach for any these days.

It was kinda mid

Some of the songs were ok like girlfriend in a coma but Morrissey has a really whiny singing voice. Morrissey sucks.

I'm trying with Morrissey, but...nope. Still can't get there.

!!!!!!

Not great. Not awful not great.

Not a big Smiths fan. And this sure did sound like the Smiths.

I’m not sure you could be sad that The Smiths stopped making albums. Morrissey’s voice worked for a while but by this time it started to be irritating. I guess he didn’t get that since he made so many solo albums after.

I’m familiar with The Queen is Dead and a handful of singles. The Queen is Dead is a fantastic album and I was looking forward to this one. Assumed I’d be deciding between a 4 and 5. It fell flat for me though. Not enough melody hooks. Morrissey’s voice is just boring. Gave the album a few listens and it never started to grow on me.

There are attempts here at sonic palettes beyond the usual jangly guitar and 4x4 drums that characterize most Smiths songs, but they're hamstrung by Morrissey taking an off-day and not even trying to show up in the vocal department.

Voz característica dos anos 80, sem maior relevância para mim.

mmmhhhh ?

No thank you.

09/20/2022 Hmm...not great tbh. Their albums really have a tendency to drag. A rush and a push is one of my favorite smiths songs though bc I used to listen to it a lot in high school. -- 6pm, still working on studio, Probably gonna be here for another several hours, but at least it will finally be done. Today I haven't been feeling great, but it was honestly better than yesterday. Still super anxious, still want to cry every 30 minutes, but it's fine. Just hope that I can be strong enough to pull myself out of this damn pit, look back, and know that I've learned to never be this low again.

It's just all a bit boring tbh. After listening to this I went and played Family Entertainment (1969). Now that's proper music.

Songs I liked: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours Unhappy Birthday

Too melodramatic for me.

This is the fourth and final (studio) album by English rock band The Smiths, released after they already disbanded. (They would have one final live album released in 1988.) This fourth album stands as the band's best work and has been certified gold in the UK. I liked the indie rock music from this 80's British album, but it doesn't compare to some of the more popular albums on this 1001 album journey.

misery has never been less fun

Do you like synth 80s music and whiny monotonous voices? Then this album is for you. I thought this was exceptionally boring.

Okay, lyrically I get why this was catnip to broody teens. But the crooning over swaying andante tempos? I’m going to need a lot more guitar angst to make this work for me (How Soon Is Now, and nothing less). Paint a Vulgar Picture was particularly bad.

It was okay, a bit dour for me

Sounds like Louis would like this album.

I missed Morrissey first time around. He has an excellent voice.

Decent tunes, but I hate his voice

i just fucking hate these whiny ass lyrics. talking about being so angry and wanting to hurt someone. fucking nerd. the angst. it's too much.

Kohtuullisen tylsä. Saatto muutoinkin rankka maanantai pilata tunnelmaa, mutta ei siis ainakaan rankan viikonlopun jälkeisiin hetkiin sovi....

Taas hetki menny ennen ku pääsee arvostelee… Mut tää tais olla sarjassamme ”kasikytluku, perustetaan bändi ja kaikki laulajat kuulostaa samalta”. Kerran menee, mut nää riittää, kiitos.

This wasn't a bad listen musically, but I am REALLY not a fan of Morrisey's vocal delivery, I find it kind of grating. It certainly effects my enjoyment of this album and brings the score down. I know I won't be revisiting this but I'm OK with that.

There's a certain quality to Morrissey's voice that I could never stand; it would hit a particular nerve that was just painful. So while there are a couple of OK songs in this album, I cannot rate it favourably.

Mehhh.

This album straight up just wasn't that good, I'm not sure why it was selected to be in this book. The Smiths are a classic band and all but I have never seen people discuss this album and now I know why: nothing on it is of any note. No great songs, just a lot of decent ones with one or two that fully stink. Would give it 2.5 stars if I could, it's completely middle of the road.

Interesting 80’s alternative music but not my jam.

The high water mark of this album is the deadpan darkness of "Girlfriend in a Coma" - which is a 5 star song. The rest shows the band flirting with different styles, stretching out into extended Beatles-isms, and other explorations - none of which are anywhere near as rich.

Not sure why I’d like it now when I didn’t like it in 1978.

It's good, it's listenable, but no real standouts.

// Favs: – Score: Light to Strong 2

My conclusion here is the same as it was for The Queen Is Dead. I like the music. I dislike Morrisey’s voice. His voice is a 1.5 star deduction.

It was okay. Kind of dry but I can see why people enjoy it.

I don't know. Kinda stuck between two and three. Never been a fan. It doesn't suck, but not my thing either.

Niet mijn ding.

Last Night I dreamt someone love me has a wild opening Unhappy birthday is iconic

The Smiths är allvarligt tråkiga

Good album, strange lyrics but loved the music

Smiths have songs that rule...they also have songs that don’t...a lot of songs that dont

Morrissseys dulcid, rambling tones are chalk on a blackboard.

A cool sound but don't really think its for me - this is another album I think I could try to return to with more time Saved: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

nothing too special here, hadn't really found their sound yet and ended up making a bland indie pop record

dronerock again for me

This feels like a poor man's Tears for Fears. I dunno. Didn't do much for me.

2 stars. Not horrible but not my kind of music

less cringe than I was expecting, still not a fan of 80's rock. bland out of 5

I've never really understood the huge appeal of The Smiths. I guess its too wordy for me, and the melodies and instrumentation are boring.

There were some tracks I liked but others that I wasn't too fussed on.

Honestly kinda annoying.

There's a reason I didn't buy this one as I was moving out of this phase and into SST at the time. Just not a great record combined with all the failures of late 1980s production. Overcompressed, flat, and without definition. Snare reverbed into non-existence. Kick drum buried in the mix. Might be the GOAT for song titles though.

The Smiths are so boring and comically depressing. Do significant others really end up in comas that frequently, Morrissey?

1987: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, Girlfriend in a Coma

Man what a bunch of whiny shits. No wonder Johnny Marr couldn’t tolerate Morrisey much longer after this nonsense. Over emotional crap.

I just finished suffering thru this album. It truely sucks.

Not for me

Yeah that is shit. What a pretentious voice (and that rasp too, ew, fucking hated it). Generic pop structures with somewhat interesting instrumentals but his voice makes me want to kill myself. Maybe that's the point. Lyrics could be better too. I am dreading getting more Smiths on this website. 1/5

Overall: 2/10 Morrissey genuinely completely ruins a band that I probably wouldn't mind if I didn't have to listen to his insufferable whining and godawful lyrics. I have to listen to that twats voice way too often. Apart from him, I don't really like the music all that much either, but I did get enjoyment out of a couple of songs. Fav Song: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish

Boring, forgettable and a really annoying voice.

Ultimately, an exceptionally boring record through which we must suffer through Morrisey's vocal tone. This was another album by The Smiths that I'm glad I don't ever have to listen to again. 1.5 stars because I didn't absolutely despise it, but am still rounding down.

I just hate Morrissey it's not my fault

"Strangeways, Here We Come" is the fourth and final studio album by English rock band The Smiths. Thank God! Back in the '80s, everyone seemed to love them. Except me. I still can’t understand what people see in their whingeing, whining music with egomaniacal lyrics and uninspired guitar playing. Johnny Marr is an excellent guitarist, but with The Smiths, you rarely get to hear that. The album would almost be bearable if it weren't for Mr Steven Patrick Morrissey droning on over everything. No, really — even almost forty years after its release, this band and this music mean nothing to me. There's plenty of excellent, sensitive music with poetic lyrics out there — you really don't need The Smiths.

Nope Fuck Morrissey and his yodeling

So depressing! Sorry can't stand these guys.

Shite.

See other Smiths reviews. A 1.

I cannot fucking wait til Morrissey dies

I just can't stand his voice, couldn't get through a whole song. Plus Morrissey is a bit of a cunt. 0/10 songs liked

Anywhere from forgettable to irritating, depending on my swinging mood. Get out of my face.

It opens with something that sounds like Tin Pan Alley by way of Robert Smith -- neither being a compliment for a rock band. The rest of the record sounds like someone gave U2 too many Quaaludes. Johnny Marr is a guitarist who has produced one very interesting sound ('How Soon Is Now') and been otherwise serviceable. Morrissey is a crooner stranded in the wrong decade, in the wrong band, and more famous for being a handsome vegan than for being good at music. 'Death of a Disco Dancer' has some good sounds and a very sleepy groove but it's weighed down by the fight against sleep and by Morrissey being shit. 'Girlfriend in a Coma' has a good intro and then the singing starts and the band slinks back to chimey bullshit to, for some reason, make space for their singer -- and then there are strings, for some reason. Same story with 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One'. 'Unhappy Birthday' is just a parody of a Smiths song that they recorded as a lark and I won't be convinced otherwise. The Smiths are just like Marmite, in that they seem a bit like an elaborate joke that the Brits are playing on the rest of the world by pretending adoration. Except that I like Marmite.

How are the Smiths so bad?

Man sings like he’s shitting and coming at the same time and demands you be proud of him for it.

I wanted to like this one so much. I feel like in so many shows and movies, all the "cool girls" love The Smiths. I didn't really like this one at all. I liked one song and it was just the lyrics I enjoyed. Favorite Song: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me - I enjoyed the lyrics of this song.

I hate The Smiths. Fuck Morrissey.

Fuck the Smiths, and that whiny bitch Morrisey.

No me gusta the smiths

I have never liked the Smiths because they're depressing, and especially dislike Morrissey because he's a pretentious twat. The only good thing about this album is that it was their last album. It's just a shame that Morrisey wasn't sent to Strangeways for crimes against music.

Honestly really hated this album. I really do not like the singers voice, which has these annoying whiny undertones, and weirdly in some songs swapped to what I would consider him trying to immitate the cookie monster? Also I hate when songs just slowly fade out into nothing as a sad excuse to completing the song.

Most of these songs are missing a hook for me, and feel monotonous.

First listen

Moany moany morrisey. Never really got the Smiths but appreciate for some they are the most amazing band of all time. Maybe one day someone can help me get there....

Quite happy before listening to this. Now, no.

Fuck that guy. But Johnny Marr is cool

1 out of 5 Just...no

Overrated album. Depressing with no style points. Sorry. Morrissey is the most overrated frontman alive.

Garbish

Hate the Smiths with every fiber of my being. I won't listen to this.

Boring and whiny not for me 1/5

This is it. This is definitely the worst Smiths album. Jesus fucking Christ I cannot believe people enjoy this vapid whiny cunt.

Previous Smiths entries so far have been held up by the instrumental end. I don’t know why they pivoted to this baroque knockoff renaissance-fair sound, but picturing Morrissey’s fat gut in one of those silly outfits at least added an element of humour to this dreadful album.

The Smiths have never been a favorite but wanted to give the album a shot. Not the type of music I like, but can see why people like them... actually, I guess I do like this style just not their music. The Smiths, REM and The Pogues all around the same time & can see the similarities. No bangers.

Nope, still can't listen to The Smiths. However, a couple of songs were bearable this time.

I don't understand this band.

I had a Morrissey album yesterday. This has to be some sort bad luck right? How is this guy on this list so much? Fuck Morrissey.

The Smiths made some good music. This is not that. This shit is not good. Why is he growling so much?

Not a big Smiths fan. Familiar of course with Girlfriend In A Coma, but not really crazy about it and nothing else stands out.

One star because Morrissey.

Fuck Morrissey

Some people can differentiate between art and artist. I try for most things but I have a visceral dislike for Morrissey. I don’t like his voice, his attitude towards other artists, or his beliefs in general. So I will always give a single star. I do like Johnny Marr in just about everything else.

Could think of hundreds of better 80s albums

I'd givr this four without Morrissey. This Guy makes me violently unhappy. This.

KJEDELIG. ALT AV SMITHS ER K J E D E L I G

"Stop me if you think you've heard this one before" isn't bad. "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me" was ok but nothing in here for me beyond a 1.

Nothing for me to hold onto for enjoyment here. 1 star.

No music that sticks

Morrissey

Very repetitive music. Couldn’t bring myself to finish it 2.5/10 ~ 1/5

I sit happily in the Morrissey is a complete wanker sub-group. Some give this 5 and still say they hate him. I just can’t stand his whole thing. One of not my least favourite vocalist, he really gets under my skin with his simpering act. This is like an endurance course that the whining little shit has too many entries in this list. The music is him and his delivery, with any other vocalist maybe a different story for me, as there is a definite (if indirect according to Marrs) link back to 1 of my all time favourites The Byrds jangle), but he is the Smiths sound, so it can fuck off, gave the last one 2 Stars but that, with this increased exposure now was being generous 1 Star, would be zero if I could, and there's more of him to come oh great.

Please no more sad British pop. English women must trounce these boys on the regular.

Once again I have been given another album featuring the insufferable Morrissey. Is there no end to his inclusion on this list?

There's some decent music on here, but it's ruined by the fact Morrissey sings on every song. I don't like his voice, and really don't like him as a person either. That's not the rest of the band's fault, but it pushes me away from them regardless. If I'm going to listen to The Smiths, I'd rather listen to covers than hear him.

Another British indie rock album. Sigh. Not one song I would revisit.

I liked this the least of all The Smiths albums I've had on this list so far. Meat Is Murder was meh and The Queen Is Dead had some good points, but this album honestly had me going "oh fuck off" a few times. This is a 1.5 for me, but Morrissey's voice bugged me, the lyrics bugged me, and Morrissey in general just bugs me, so I'm rounding down.

Angsty

Insufferable shite! Why is he wailing and growling like that?? "I'm gonna kill my dog" fuck right off Pretentious ass lyrics, thinks he's the dogs bollocks 1 ⭐️

F&$# off. Remember that movie what that guy wakes up and the Beatles never existed? Imagine if that was Morrissey instead. A man can dream, can't he? Favourite track: Death at One's Elbow is the shortest. I suppose it gave sad kids someone to relate to. One star.

some good songs. but mostly generic radio stuff

The singing rarely changes, the beats are stale, and the music is boring. What a slog of an album. Favorite Song: "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"

I don’t care for this type of music. It’s like the cure which I was never a fan of.

No, just no. Boring I just don't get the hype around the band

I did listen while writing. I'm not sure did I hear anything. That describes this experience.

Not good. At all.

Really? More Smiths? I listened to this anyway. It seemed that musically, the band tried to do something different, play some stuff that wasn’t just the same old Smiths music. But if you put that voice over anything, it’s going to sound like a Smiths song. That’s not exactly a good thing. Morissey has the vocal range of a gnat. It’s one tone, all the time. And not a very pleasant one, either. Sounds like it’s coming from the back of the throat and the back of the sinuses at the same time. Or something. I can’t put my finger on it. But I know I don’t like it. To sum up, Morrisey’s awful and he drags the band down with him.

Not a huge fan but hey they can’t all be winners

I’m not listening to more 80s British music

Shitty 80s British music

Meh. 1/5

God i hate Morrissey. I didnt always and have danced my little heart out to the smiths in my indie disco days. But once you learn about his views then his whiney histrionic singing and lyrics really grate and even Mr Marr cant save it. Im giving me marr a bonus star but this still only gets 1 as without it i would have burnt my phone and cur my ears off

Never liked The Smiths and this album does nothing to change that. Some nice guitar sounds and Johnny Marr is great but it’s all ruined by Morrissey. Dull vocal delivery as always, accompanied by the smarmy, pseudo-intellectual moaning. He maybe has 3 lines of remotely interesting lyric or melody on the whole album. Here’s hoping I avoid any more of this dross.

Another band that, for me, just doesn’t live up to the hype. I don’t understand the adoration, this album is boring as fuck.

I actually hate this.

I hate Morrrissey and the Smiths.

Really did not enjoy just not my style of music

What an Arrogant prick....

Another exercise in suffering.

Still no love for the smiths

Morrisey is a xenophobic ass

I was never a Smiths fan, but wanted to give this a go, as I only knew them from their singles.... I haven't changed my mind.. music to slash your wrists by !

There is a song called I started something I couldn't finish, I thought it was pretty relevant to my situation with this album

Some people must like The Smiths. I happen think the best thing about this record is its very short length. You do you.

This popped up this morning and I was slightly excited - I had heard of The Smiths since at least the early 90s and knew that there were a lot of people that absolutely love them, and I remember seeing them cited as a very influential band of their time. I knew the music wasn't exactly my jam, but I was still excited to hear something that's undoubtedly played a role in influencing some music that I do like, having never really listened to them at all. Boy oh boy could I have not been more disappointed. This was terrible. Just absolutely brutally boring. I'm committed to finishing each of these albums in full as they pop up, but I think this one set the record (so far) for the number of times I checked to see how many tracks were left so I could be done with it. I tried to find something, anything to take away from this, but all I heard was extremely simple musical arrangements paired with some melancholy lyrics and a voice that really rubbed me the wrong way after about 2 songs. It all sounded the same, and not in a good way.

This most definitely was not for me. I generally am ok with darker lyrics but something about the lyrics + music + his voice = no thank you. Really waffled between 1 and 2 stars for this but this is maybe the first one where I am struggling so much to see what value this has and why it's on the list. My other 2 stars while not for me, I can understand why they are on the list.

When I was younger, I heard Girlfriend In A Coma sung to the tune of Tiptoe Through The Tulips on Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. Kinda ruined the original for me, but the album is still great. 1 star because Morrissey is a racist lunatic.

The esthetic sucks. The reverb is grey as a shitty coastal town. The lyrics are wack. The songs are too damn long and Morrissey's voice is just the worst. I fucking hated this shit and hate their little bitch ass pre-teen attitudes.

Not one song grabbed me. They all sounded the same. Whiny nasally disenchanted droning. No wonder j never got into them.

Fuck Morrisey

Awful and forgettable

Too nice for punk, too indie for easy listening, too silent for rock. Not impressive for me.

Based on the kinds of things he says, I always considered Morrissey as a kind of a jerk. I have a hard time enjoying something where someone seems so awful. The Smiths...ok...not earth-shattering or anything. Hardly worth the hype.

I’ve never cared for Morrissey’s vocals!

Not my group

not my vibe

Not a smiths fan

Didn't ever care if lyrics were meaningful or not. I suspect this music has some kind of lyrics. Do not want to listen to this voice and sappy music.

Don't like them.

Worth remembering in 1987 that The Cure was doing moodiness way better and that overseas The Replacements were doing the jangly power pop thing way better. Some nice guitar tones, that's about it.

1/5 - I dislike the vocals so much I couldn't listen to more than 1 song. Fuck Morrissey.

I don’t get the Smiths. Pretentious pseudo rock with a touch of disco ? And Morrissey besides being an idiot isn’t a good singer. 1 star

normol

Boring. Not even some fun guitar work. He's such a misery guts

would give 0 stars if i could

The only positive thing about this album is that it means that we're almost over listening to Morrisey.

Massive amounts of weed and shrooms seem the likely reason the outlandish lyrics permeate this entirely bizarre album. An entire song about "Girlfriend in a coma," feels like it was written by either an immature teenager or generative AI. A single listen to all songs will suffice for the rest of my life.

Didn't hate it as much as the other one

Hate morrisey

Boring

\"Oh FUCK! Not this shit again!\" Was my thought when I saw ANOTHER album by the Smiths pop up today. Song number 5 is called \"Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before\", so I did. I award this 1 spoiled, unfinished cake. 🥮

Nothing really stood out to me.

Never really got The Smiths, and the cod-reggae opener didn't help. Chuck in the 'lyrics' to Paint and I wonder why anyone ever lauded Morrissey's way with words. Those words clearly got away from him. Apparently both Morrissey and Marr claim this is their best album, which probably tells me all I need to know about this.

I didn't want to listen to this really

Pretty terrible it was a struggle to make it through

Not for me

The lead singer has such an unusual voice that I just can't get over. I've never liked Smith's songs I've heard before and this album, although interesting, was no exception

Shoot me now.

The man who’s singing sounds like a chicken. There is no future for this band.

não terminei, não sei como alguém pode gostar

Chiaaant

Not my thing at all.

Do not like The Smiths and this hasn’t converted me. *

Still not my thing, sorry :(

Uninteressant.

I've never been a huge fan of The Smiths. This album didn't excite me, but it was easy listening for work. I wouldn't seek it out, but I didn't hate it.

Great album

Smiths

It's good!
