Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Pretty mid. Late 80s, what do you expect. Idk wasn’t repulsive. Wasn’t something I’d go back to. Honestly today anything is better than my overplayed algorithm so that’s maybe closing my judgement

My thoughts remain the same as with the previous Smiths album we had to listen to.

- smits on tuttu mutta en tiiä oonko tältä levyltä kuullu yhtäkää biisiä - kyllähän tää smitsiltä kuulostaa mut sit taas nää kuulostaa liikaa smitsiltä, vaikuttais siltä että smits itsessään ei mua napostele mutta smitsin parhaat biisit toimii - taidan pysyä niissä parhaissa biiseissä

Pure vibes

Overrated

Nah dog, this ain't it.

Not terrible but I didn't love it. Girlfriend in a Coma is a classic for this band/genre but the overall mood of the record is too sad for me.

It was ok, I’m still coloured by that Morrissey album horror. This one was less offensive and some catchy bits sprinkled throughout. Still have moments of that dripping with narcissism vibe that I hated with the Morrissey album. Not love.

That was boring.

Oh no The tunes are great and then Morrissey's voice is the worst thing I've ever heard

529/1001

The Mids 2.8 if I could

Would have really appealed to like a weird kid in the 80s but not for me. Fav song stop me if you think you've heard this one before

The Smiths sound like The Smiths. Shock

The music wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t memorable. The lyrics didn’t make much sense. Morrissey sings like he’s impersonating an opera singer.

Just the wrong side of miserable for me

I tried to give this a fair shout and listened all the way through, but I cannot thole Morrissey. Whining obnoxious tosser spoils an otherwise interesting record.

mucho más mi estilo; rock alternativo y no tan heavy. ya conocía girlfriend in a coma canción fav: i won’t share you

Here it comes, the Smiths are about to blow me away … ok, just got back, they did not blow me away.

Didn’t tell me much.

For the life of me, I don't understand why they're so popular.

Its like Jeffrey Dahmer made an album. Music was fine, but too much murder for me

Really could not get into this at all personally, just felt very same-y throughout the whole album

If I wanted to hear jangly incel nonsense I’d listen to a Midwest emo record

This has been the WORST Smiths album, imo. It barely kept my attention, and most just annoyed me. Would not recommend a second listen. It doesn’t get better.

The Smiths is one of the most generic names possible. Genius

Morrissey is an insufferable racist and the first song sounds like it could have been written by Nigel Farage. Also, "Girlfriend in a Coma" is probably the dumbest song this band ever recorded. I would rank this lower, but I have a soft spot for the music video to "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"

Didn’t enjoy this. Not my thing

After enjoying the queen is dead and their self titled, this was a bit of a disappointment. Liked about 2 songs, the rest didt really click for me. 2 stars, don’t see myself revisiting it

actually not bad, just underwhelming... 4/10

Light rock. Enjoyable but nothing special. 5/10

Классика, но точно не топ 1000. Так сказать, концепция присутствует 🧐.

Very wishy washy. It had no bite, lacked fun too.

Little thing, selfish, and depressing. I want to like.the Smiths better than I do, I can’t seem to get there because It seems like the lead singer comes across as so self centered. I have heard and did enjoy Girlfriend in a Coma - this is the top track. (2.2*s) It’s serious (the coma, that is.)

The List has revealed to me that I am really not a Smiths fan and I'm glad this was the last album they ever made. Bored...so much so that I forgot this was even playing while driving in to work. I'm ready to put Morrisey and his works behind, never to return...1.49 stars.

Oh great, another Smiths album. Strangeways went down a little smoother than the others. Not sure if I was in a particularly glum mood or this one was just a little less depressing or whatever. I didn't realize The Smiths only have 4 albums. Most of their stuff is in the decent/OK/not bad realm for me but they have a handful of hits they I enjoy. More of this is not the worst just a little tiresome at this point. I'm not sure why the list creator finds Morrissey and company so intriguing. 2.57 stars

The smiths again??

Nice album. Some interesting lyrics and melodies. Not musically diverse.

The break-up album. Can you hear the unraveling (the classic banishment of other songwriting talent, separating them by album sides, material simply not working)? Did they put their best effort in despite it all and leave a lasting document (Abbey Road)? Do we hear this and wish it could’ve never ended? Mostly, what an odd duck of a record. There’s the atmospherics and imperial critique of A Rush and a Push. The extremely hokey, cloying Girlfriend in a Coma, which even at 13 I thought was silly. Followed immediately by a straight-up classic. And then a clunker and another goofy ass novelty song. Paint a Vulgar Picture starts off on an all-time footing and then reveals itself as an unworkable mess. All Smiths albums were short and this is no exception which may be its best quality as a parting statement, later dorks.

I do like the Smiths. Compared to their other stuff this album is... fine.

This is exactly what you’d think it’d be: a band completely fed up with each other while the charismatic frontman starts to find his voice away from them. The Smiths were well dead by this time, and Morrissey hadn’t quite found his solo voice. So what you get is a real doldrums of an album - well produced, but with little to no power of their earlier work. It stinks, and it’s a real bummer that this wasn’t just part of Morrissey’s solo work instead.

Not a great album from the Smiths, I was expecting a lot more on this album but I struggled getting through this one.

Just No

Dull, depressing, emo bullshit. The music is fine & I can dig it, then Morrissey opens his music & I gotta listen him drone on about being sad or not in love or his band he has to BE in. Sometimes the song is so sad it's unintentionally hilarious, like Unhappy Birthday. Second time exposed to Morrissey on here, this time with the Smiths. Still unimpressed. 2

I've been inconsisent between 2 and 3 stars but my rationale for 2 here is: -There are probably other Smiths albums on this list that are better. -Morrissey is a wanker

Only one banger on here

they dont know how to songwrite i think

Good band, good sound, and music.

Fairly unmemorable

The Good: We know before hand that this will be strange, in ways… The Bad: I cheered too soon thinking that this was my last Morrissey/Smiths album to endure… The Ugly: I’ve got 2 more to go after this one… So, about a month ago I listened to The Queen is Dead, which to my horror I actually found more than pleasant to listen to. This album, thankfully, puts me right back into not liking Morrissey at a high-high level. So, I won’t waste more time then I already have writing about an album I will never listen to again, ever. But, I will give it 2* as it’s music, with musicians and such...

There was a time when I had a slight “depressed” emo phase. Good thing I grew out of it with the help of medication. During that time, I listened to a lot of The Smiths and Morrissey. The music is really good but, Morrissey is really annoying at times. He is just too dark and brooding. I really don’t need that attitude anymore.

Dreary

the usual 2

Not for me

There were some parts of the production that I thought were pretty good, and I could hear some things that sounded like they inspired Radiohead that I enjoyed. It didn’t save the album though, I disliked most of the lyrics and melodies, and I cannot stand morrissey’s voice.

This record sucks

Morrissey sucks dick, this album is not much better

I thought The Smiths only released compilation albums? Big up Marr and Rourke, but even they couldn't subdue the fart sniffing wanker in command. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me will be added to my playlist (the version without 2minutes of wankyness at the start)

Make it stop. 2/5

I loathe Morrissey's voice, anything he sings I dislike. Good guitar work but the songs suck cause he's singing them. I am dumbfounded by how many listens this album has, only 3 songs under 10M, that's impressive, but it still blows. The sonics/mix on this album are better than other Smiths albums I've suffered through. 2 stars from me. I'm sure it's popular, not sure of influence, radio hits are almost none ("Girlfriend In A Coma" [so overrated]). The only song I kinda enjoyed was "A Rush And A Push..."

the smiths definitely have some really good songs but none of them were on this album. can’t knock johnny marr’s guitar playing but morrissey is just so goddamn depressing

The older I get the less I like The Smiths, especially post Meat Is Murder. Maybe it‘s blasphemous to admit that, I really just do not like Morrissey

Great first track but I can do without track 3s bleating hipster incantations. Didn’t know where « very nice » was from though. Solid drum breakdown at the end though. Track 4 is why I haven’t listened to The Smiths until now. Proto-hipter pablum with elevatory chorus that grates the longer it goes on. Mercifully, the song ends before it goes anywhere as though they couldn’t be bothered to finish writing it. Track 5: great bridge that makes me think I’ll love the smiths. Solid chorus too. And I like his vocals on this type of track vs the next one, 6, where I feel like he erroneously gave a generation of plaintive hipster bands permission to be whiney. Track 6: notwithstanding the above, when he actually opens up and sings I like his voice (not the falsetto). Track 8: meh. I can’t believe anyone thought this chord progression was song worthy. Track 9: could definitely grow on me a lot, I like it already at first listen. Overall, I’m getting the sense that I like upbeat smiths. And loath their ballady stuff—I think I don’t believe the emotional feel / it has none. Conceptually sad, without any sadness. Track 10: case in point. Can’t stand the plaintive sadness, feels fake. Track 2: missed it earlier. I like this. More confirmation of I like upbeat smiths.

I gave the other Morrisey/Smiths albums bad reviews without listening to them, but I thought I'd actually give this one a play, and it's nice to know that it's crap music as well as a crap person. Girlfriend In A Coma saves this from a one. Oh and once again , Fuuuuuuuuuck Morrisey

I did use a private session on Spotify for this one, I don't want Spotify to think I am a The Smiths fan, for quite a while Spotify was trying to turn me into a The Smiths fan, it didn't take. Nothing wrong with this album, as in I wasn't looking forward to it's end, in fact I listened to it twice. It won't be listened to again.

Morrissey is annoying. This album is fine I guess, but I doubt I'll listen again.

Kinda ok, but nothing really remarkable.

A 1-star improvement from Meat is Murder. Still not good. Morrissey sucks balls.

Boring.

Not a fan.

it just doesnt stand out to me idk, maybe im missing something

I never really liked them. I try to listen now to hear historical significance. But I dont like his voice.

Still not my thing.

Girlfriend in a Coma is me, and I am her. Pretty much unresponsive this whole album. I can’t stand Morrissey’s voice. As a sad music lover I suppose it get the appeal with some of the lyrics so I’ll give a 2 instead of a 1. But jeez

It’s fine I suppose, but Morrissey is a bit of a cunt.

Mehhhh

Not for me. Fairly repetitive and a real downer. They are trying to make you feel like crap. 2/5 Won't listen again

Of the records I’ve heard on this list, this is certainly one of them. Inoffensive for the most part. Unremarkable.

they try too hard

The few Jonny Marr hits aren’t enough to rescue this for me. Never been into the smiths and this hasn’t changed my mind

Mediocre album. Good to know he can grunt and moan into a microphone and also sing.

Pretty dull to be honest.

Bit dreary for me

First track was great. After that it bacme worse and worse.

Not for me at all

Never got all the hype for The Smiths and Morrissey. This isn't a bad album if you're in the mood for moody boy music. The problem is I'm rarely in the mood for that. 4.75/10 (2.375/5)

Honestly, some tracks could be cool if not for Morissey's voice

I'm not a huge fan of The Smiths, thought the songs were okay, and can tell that this is a record the fans would like, but for me it wasn't that exciting nor it gave me much desire to listen to it again.

Bottom line-I just don't like Morrissey's voice. It sounds whiney and lacks finesse. The songs are well written, the music is performed well. In the end, I just find them bland.

I don't hate this album, even if it's just a bunch of whining. Even though fans of The Smiths are obnoxious, I will grant them that the music is certainly interesting.

Did Morrissey's flirtation with bigotry start here with Death Of A Disco Dancer? Perhaps. This album was supposed to be a transition LP towards a major label and a possible new sound. Unfortunately, the demise of The Smiths at this point only leant towards SPM's more unchecked fantasies about Bengalis, Asians in ruts and National Front Discos. One star given for Johnny Marr's work, and one for Andy Rourke's bass playing (always underated) and Mike Joyce as solid as ever.

Bland.

Not my favorite album, kind of boring but it was alright.

For the moment i tought I liked it, then the singing came. Every song is the same...

Boring and unnecessary. Morrissey is a twat and johnny marr just makes noise.

Didn’t listen

This album made me feel nothing. I didn't hate it, but I also didn't feel anything else about it either. I definitely listened to an album.

I never listened to a ton of The Smiths, figured it was only a matter of time 'til I was hooked. Then I went to see Future Islands at Red Rocks back in like 2015 or something, as they were opening for Morrissey. We stuck around for Morrissey and got to see a compilation of video footage of police shooting people's pet dogs. I guess what I'm trying to say is this might have been rated higher if not for all that. Plus some of the other stuff you hear about him.

Just couldn't get into Morrissey's voice on this one.

Interesting for sure, didn’t love it but I also didn’t expect the particular sound that this album has out of the Smiths! Will always be a freak for Robert Smith vocals but I think I like some of their other stuff more. Fav Track: I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish

Best track: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Best line: Worst track: Vibe: Mid Rating: 5/10 (would be a 7/10 without Morrissey)

I was really into it at first, but as time went on it was really one note and similar. By Last Night I dreamt I wasn't into the sound anymore. It got a little grating and one note. Really similar to their last album...

Gosh, I dunno. Fourth best Smiths album *shrugs shoulders*

*** Gave it another try with The Smith: can‘t get it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It sounds very much like the Smiths, almost to the point of repetitiveness, but also is very different from some of their other albums. The lyrics from Girlfriend in a Coma are so stupid. The album has it's own sound I guess, but everything sounds too much the same within it.

I've been kind of dreading getting an album from the Smiths on this. On one hand, I really don't like the Smiths. The sound doesn't do anything for me, their lyrics come off as whiney, and just the overall vibe just turns me off. I'm by no means an alpha male or manly man, but they've always struck me as being super weak sauce. Like music for people with no confidence and that guilt their partners into bad sex. On the other hand, so many other groups list them as influences. I have to respect that.

C't'un peu d'la marde, non?

This was vanilla as they come. I found nothing remarkable about this album. I did not need to listen to this album before I die.

I was expecting to hate this. I detest Morrisey’s voice and ridiculous style. However, the music saved it. Some decent tracks. Some poor tracks. Ultimately, if Morrisey wasn’t singing it would have been rated higher.

Weird, like he's got such an iconic voice but idk just bad lyrics and stuff

This album reminds me of REM albums without the couple of really good songs that would be included. The lyrics are interesting but the music bores me. 2 stars or D+.

They're totally singular, but the songs here aren't that memorable. Good titles and funny lyrics though.

I didn't like the Smiths then and I can only just tolerate them now. I now accept that the music is really pretty good but I can't handle Morrisey's wailing for too long. I did listen to the whole album but it was, for me, as their music always has been, filled with doom and gloom. It's taken me 40 years to listen to a Smiths album from beginning to end. I'll wait another 40 years mimimum before I listen to another one.

I do not like The Smiths. Too affected for me.

Circus music for sad 35 year olds

#freejohnnymarr

Not a huge fan of The Smiths, before hearing this, I liked How Soon is Now and dig Johnny Marr's playing but Morrisey irks me. Highlight was Death of a Disco Dancer. Suited to a rainy day while you contemplate throwing the toaster in the bath with you.

odeio the smiths,

gehört auf Gidi Asaham, Indonesien. Juni 2025 2/5

I really wanted to like this album so I listened to it. I did like it, but didn't love it. I found that my mind wandered and I'd do other things while it was on. The lyrics were clever, inspired even, the beats and musicianship well done, but it just didn't grab me. It felt a bit too refined or subdued. It had more melancholy, orchestration, and nuance than what I expected, which made it beautiful but also less arresting, at least to me. It did make me want to try some of their earlier work which I believe is edgier,

My capacity for listening to an entire album of morriseys vocals is severely limited. So it's good for a short while, then unbearable mainly cos he is unbearable.

The Smiths are a good band! But this isn't one of their brightest moments. Even with two really good songs (Death of a Disco Dancer and Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before) but the rest just feel like the most boring side of The Smith's sound combined with some not so great attempts at adding things to their sound like some more playful or theatrical sounds or Morrissey's singing being a little more forceful here, none of these new elements really add up to make their songs better, especially when their basic musical formula usually made some great songs (This Charming Man, hello). I don't know, compared to how many cool songs there are in The Queen Is Dead, this one doesn't compare for me at all.

Morrissey is a real anchor to this one dragging the rest of the band down

I don't get the smiths. I wish I got the smiths. The mixing feels awful and cluttered. I don't think Morrissey has a good voice. I think post punk is dumb and took the idea of punk and ruined it. Maybe there is good music in here somewhere but even on a remastered release I am baffled with the choices. Grating to say the least

wasn’t locked in for this one. just couldn’t really feel this one. nothing grabbed me where i was like OH!

Something about this guys voice is like nails across a chalkboard

I find it weird to celebrate these albums that were like, "this band was about to breakup. They were fueding and this is what they created. It isn't that good but it was the last one." really don't like that great music is being pushed out because of stuff like this.

I could never be a goth. I don't know what he did to me in a past life, but these vocals put my hackles on edge and send me to sleep all at once. Such a deal breaker for me.

Not a huge fan. Musically it's solid but without much variation, vocals are lackluster. Feels like it wants to be deep but comes more across to me as something that people who want to be pretentious claim is a masterpiece. There are some good lines in there

Whiny... Not my thing.

I sleep

Garbage

Eh.. not for me

Really didn’t like this album I only got about 3 songs in until I really didn’t like it. I love the smiths other albums like meat is murder and their self titled, but this seemed like a huge departure from those albums. I can see some people really liking this album but the weird vocal inflections from Moresy, weird mixing, and brash layered drums just didn’t enjoy it.

Apart from the tracks I had already heard there wasn’t much to this album. The good songs are good. The rest of the album is raking over the same Morrissey ground

total: 42/10 stars: 2

Why am I so miserable now? Linkin Park released a banger on this day.

I don't think I like The Smiths. They have yet to prove me wrong. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me was a great song, but it can't save the rest of the album from the weirdness. I LOVE the light springiness of the acoustic guitar in most of these songs however, it's just that "The Smiths" vibe may not be for me.

Meh, didn't really vibe with any of the songs. Not an era of songs for me I suppose.

To be fair his wasn't as bad as I expected. Not to say I'll be rushing out to buy it. But it wasn't dreadful like I thought it would be. Only worth a 2 though.

Lejos de ser lo mejor de los smiths

Never was a fan. That whiny nihilistic holier than thou vocalist can suck it. The music is great, but unfortunately the vocals are a no go.

Beetje het zelfde allemaal maar, Paint a vulgar picture Girlfriend in a coma Zijn bangers

I should like this album. I want to like this album. It’s so close to interesting but for me it feels like slightly elevated elevator music.

This is a great reminder that The Smiths really don't do it for me. The album starts of great with A Rush but then takes a nosedive into some of the most average songs to come out of this band. It turns around with Last Night I Dreamt Someone Love Me (a song that would be better without its 2 minute intro) but is immediately followed by one of the worst lyrically written songs I've ever heard in Unhappy Birthday. "I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday because you're evil and you lie" followed by "It should be this way? I say No, I'm gonna kill my dog" The last three tracks amp back up to an enjoyable listening experience but leave me teetering between a 2 and a 3. I'm landing on a 2 because I Won't Share You reminded me that I'd much rather be listening to REM's Document that came out the same year and is infinitely better.

In what world is this their best album

I get why The Smiths appeal to some people, but the consistently downtempo instrumentals, Morrissey’s whiny pitchy vocals, and their inane, often seemingly pointless lyrics, make me not one of them.

not the best smiths album

It was a fine album, just not the mood I was in for the day

So I've no listened to all The Smiths now albums right? This didn't do much for me

contender for the most overrated band of all time

Eh. Expected more to be honest.

Musically not bad. Probably deserves better than a 2. I’m just not a fan of mopey vocals

A bit bland

Wasn't enough focused on that one, I appreciated the vibe, the singing was pretty special and enjoyable so I think that was a good one but nothing really special.

As far as the Smiths go, this album sucks less than the others. Morrissey always sounds like he’s trying to be the star in a high school show choir.

Okay, very classic style and a bit samey

This was meh, old and boring.

Meh. I can understand how this was a blueprint for Indie rockers all around, but I didn't really like it much.

Kind of like Elvis Costello, the Time-Between-Morrissey™ (TBM) on this list is way too low for my liking. This one (the 5th of his works independent and with the Smiths) comes in at an intolerable 14 days. Now flowers where they are due, the last album was actually decent. Opener does nothing for me at all, but I Started Something I Couldn't Finish is actually pretty fun. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me is a fine standalone, even though the production sounds incredibly shitty. As far as Smiths/Morrissey albums go this is on the better end of the spectrum, but I am stricken repeatedly by how little I care while listening. Like none of it is actually "bad" it just doesn't get me going. So for that this is a low 3 to high 2. Going with the latter in protest of so much goddamned Morrissey.

Boring 80s album. Hate when seltzer water goes straight to your head and you decide your aren't sharing anymore. 2.5 stars

Ayyyy more Morrissey. Pretty straightforward Smiths music. Nothing spectacular. Really hate Death at One's Elbow. This ended on a poor note on an already not inspiring album. High 2.

Starts out great with A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours, and I Started Something I Couldn't Finish is a solid follow up. But then it kinds drags. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before is decent though. Meh album with a couple breakout songs. Best song: A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours

2 not great I can just tell morrissey is annoying from his voice

Too much angst.

It's weird they have much better albums than this? It's the smiths but without any classics?

Not a Smiths fan. Too British mopey for me. Best thing about this album is that it is the Smith's final one.

Like bad teeth and vinegar on your fries, probably it’ve been better for us all if this album had just stayed home in jolly old.

Approached this ready to dislike and was initially pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the music, especially the guitar. But whenever I tuned into morriseys lyrics any goodwill immediately evaporated. Unhappy birthday cemented this as a 2 for me.

Didn’t do it for me.

Boring Slow Beautiful singing Good Lyricism

It’s The Smiths. Of course it’s here. It’s the sound of 80s alternative emo rock. Not entirely partial to their sound/lyrics and Morrisey’s weird sing/talking. The music seems strangely not in sync with him. Maybe that’s part of the charm? Not for me.

Best Song: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours. I like the chorus, even if it's lyrically a bit of a mess. Worst Song: Death at One's Elbow. What are we cosplaying a western for? Overall: If you've heard one song by The Smiths, you've heard them all. A brisk 30 minutes that ends up feeling long just because of how repetitive it is. The only thing that happens the longer you listen, is you start to get the sense that Morrissey is bitterly unrelatable. "Has the perrier gone straight to my head?" C'mon now.

Not my favorite. The songs all sound very similar

I think I just can’t do morrissey sorry

I think it's a standard record. The "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" track grabbed my attention for the groove. Kind of an ironic title, if I consider my first comment about this album. I think "Unhappy Birthday" was cleaver. The happy sounding melody with the sad/dark lyrics. This track I actually listed to it a few times.

I like that one Smiths song but I find the rest of their stuff soooo boring, I do not like how slow and dragged on the lyrics are in every song.

Quite nice. Morrissey simply has a super catchy and unique voice. All the controversy that seems to surround him has passed me by anyway, so that won't be part of the rating. If I was a child of the 80s, The Smiths would probably be in my regular rotation. However, the album itself has little character. Perhaps it stands out in comparison to other Smiths albums, but on its own it has few stand-out qualities. I couldn't name or even clearly remember a single song after listening. 2.5/5

A very plain album - I prefer Morrissey's solo work, though neither are that interesting. Unhappy Birthday was a kind of funny. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

its fine. i think Morrisseys energy repels me from enjoying anything attached to his name. idk im just bored by this album

ugh. I wish johnny marr was in a different band

Even with the Smiths, Morrisey is unbearable.

I feel The Smiths as The Cure, are bands you either need to be in the mood for them or you like them that much. There’s a limit of how much The Smiths i can listen. And as much as i understand their importance, i would not even consider this album in this list. However, it is a solid one, displaying who are they and being them all the time. Well done, well written, but nothing special to me. It felt always like a long song.

The Smiths hasn't been part of my music listening life ever. And when I listen to this album I really understand why. I need more distorted heavy guitars and Morriseys singing has never been my cup of anything.

I've only fairly recently become able to stomach Morrisseys style of singing and listened to his later albums for a few times with enjoyment. This one however was quite horrible, his manners are multiples more annoying, the music is rather thin and lo-fi and feels like they've added some unusual instrument just because they happened to be around. I had hard time to find a song that would be better that the others, which usually isn't a problem for me.

Huge drop-off after The Queen is Dead.

No, def not their best

Vintage rock 2-3/5

не мое

Yep. Smiths still mid.

This album was fine. I do not like Morrissey's voice 7 times out of 10 lol. I think the first half of this album is strong and then they lose me in the second half. Actually a 2.5. Liked Songs: "...I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" , "Girlfriend in a Coma" , "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"

Never been a fan of theirs

This album is pure 80s depression. I honestly was not that familiar with the Smiths. I think I’d only ever heard How Soon is Now Before. These tracks have a similar melancholy sound to that song. Many of the tracks would not be out of place in a David Lynch movie. Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me is odd. Two minutes of people yelling before the track really starts. Morrisey also makes some weird noises on a lot of these tracks. Overall I was not impressed. I did not favorite any tracks nor would I listen to this again. 2

I like the songs and general feel of the album but the vocals just don't do it for me. I feel sorry for Morrissey in that there is nothing wrong with his voice, it is actually quite pleasant, but there is nothing there; no passion, no feeling, no emotion, nothing but words. Comes over as a pleasant listen but nothing more yet it could be so much more.

Not a very interesting album

Ah, Mr Morrissey. We meet again. Just so you know for future reference. I really don't like you

Stop Me If is the only song I enjoyed. Weird combination of bouncy rhythm and melodramatic vocals. I did like the way the layered guitars sounded throughout.

I know many people who are fans of The Smiths style of music I'm not one of them I need a little more rock and less whine

Objectively it's probably closer to a three, but I didn't fully jive with it and I don't see myself listening to the album again. Some of the songs did cheer me up and make me laugh in traffic this morning which is quite the feat. I'm intrigued to listen to other albums by The Smiths.

I need to give this another listen + get deeper in to The Smiths discography. It didn't do it for me the first listen, but I get the feeling I need to try harder.

I pretty much ignored the Smiths for years. I was never exposed to them and never went out of my way to explore them. I will say, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Maybe I just anticipated something worse? I know there’s a lot more Smiths / Morrissey on this list, so I’ll be exposed to more and maybe I’ll enjoy that even more. But as of now I’m still kind of ignoring them.

Ugh i still can't stand Morissey. The music was okay. Reminded me of Radiohead...not in a good way

Not bad, but I will be probably not return to this.

A few good lyric but nothing stood out to me. Favourite track: Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before.

Not as good as their previous records, with generally weaker songs and too much Morrissey and not enough Marr.

Try as I might, I really don't enjoy The Smiths, and that's not even accounting for Morrissey's horribleness. Consequently, I'm more than a little annoyed to see that we somehow managed to get three of their four albums in this collection, and then four Morrissey albums as well. Good for diehard fans of Morrissey, excruciating for everyone else (or at least me). I guess this album belongs in this collection more than the previously heard "The queen is dead", given all the radio hits on this album, but I just can't get into *any* of the music, I'm afraid, and what wasn't a radio hit is eminently forgettable. Or I hope I can forget it...

Just not my cup of tea. I gave a listen, but could not get into it. Musically, very good. Lyrically not a fan. With the exception of Unhappy Birthday. I did enjoy that one.

Not a horrible album. No idea how it made this list though.

More sad bastard whining from the king of it

What is there to even enjoy about this? 1.5

Eh. When I hear the Smiths I think what have they done that another band hasn't done better. That's a sign that I don't like the music, can't connect enough to understand the value underneath. The music is full of mid-tones and low on contrast, and covered in talk-singing. Honestly the album cover sums up my lukewarm feelings on the Smiths in general

More 80's rock with the typical UK sound. not for me

Jag vill gilla The Smiths mer än vad jag faktiskt gillar The Smiths

Already forgot all about it, so probably not great

I am a mixed fan of The Smiths, they have some captivating songs to their name however there are many more songs that I cannot quite get behind. This album is one of those. With songs like "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "Paint a Vulgar Picture" for example; it seems as though the band had a track quota and these is what they came up with. I can imagine the creative process as picking 2-3 chords to create a repeating riff then add libbing the lyrics and printing it. The only two songs I enjoyed were "Death of a Disco Dancer" and "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me".

I think I am just surprised by how many British songs are here! Like, wow. I felt this was very similar to led Zeppelin. I don't think it was anything too special? Maybe it's just the 80's vibes.

I like Johnny Marr but not Morrissey. His voice gets annoying. Kills the vibes in the music.

Might be good

Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me is a truly exceptional song and I have a soft spot for Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before. The first couple of tracks are bland as hell though (sorry, but I don’t get why Girlfriend In A Coma gets so much love) and the last few are hit and miss at best.

just not as good as the smiths other stuff and i’m pretty off them. eh. 4/10

First of all, too damn much Morrisey on this list - His Mopiness doesn’t warrant this kind of over representation. Especially not for such a weak final record as Strangeways. The magic was gone. Give me their debut, and Queen, and I will continue to think of them fondly. Strangeways did not wow me when it was released, nor has the passage of time brightened my dim view of this album.

it's their worst album

least fave of the smiths

Alright

I really like the music in this but something about this guys voice buys me. He sounds aloof and dispassionate most of the time. Some songs break through but on the whole I can’t get over the vocals

A collection of songs that made me feel a lot of nothing in particular 2/5

2.5☆/5 09.09.2024

Not as bad as expected given, you know, it’s fucking Morrisey. Last night I dreamt and I won’t share you both decent. Early Radiohead might have taken a bit of something from this. 5/10

Starts out better than previous Smiths material I've heard, with a couple tracks I can almost call "upbeat". But takes a turn fast. Death of a Disco Dancer is completely awful to me, just depressing and boring. Girlfriend in a Coma is laughably terrible. I still HATE Morrissey's sad, crooning, melodramatic voice (hate him as a person too). Stop Me might be the first Smiths song I actually like! The rest is mostly shit. Did I mention Morrissey sucks? I did? Good, I didn't want to leave that out.

I mean it’s The Smiths. You know what you’re getting: Morrissey is annoying, the rest of it is fine, whatever

Pitiful self-pitying jangle fest from a racist. I know the 80s were bleak but there’s no excuse for this.

Starting to believe that the only Smiths record worth listening to is the Queen is Dead. This is meh at best.

ha, die morr en marr... you started something i couldn't finish... ik heb jullie raad opgevolgd : stop if you think you heard this one before...

It's fine, but I really fucking hate Morrissey

Every song sounds the same. I need to be in a very specific mood to enjoy this type of music and it was just not hitting today.

Pretty much the same dreary Smiths as always, except for the last song, which actually ends on a happy note.

Nett als Hintergrundmusik.

I don't get why The Smiths are legendary. Born too late, I guess.

Je connaissais le nom du groupe, sans y associer de morceau. Cet album me permet de faire la liaison. Une originalité : la partie instrumentale finale de Death of a Disco Dancer, ... mais globalement l'album est peu marquant. Heureusement il est plutôt court. => 2/5

This is what’s wrong with this playlist. Another forgettable Smithd album.

I was originally introduced to the Smiths through a Hispanic cover of This Charming Man. Sorta mid, sorta not Favorite Song: Paint a Vulgar Picture Rating: 2.2/5

Nee, New Wave ist nichts für mich.

Jangly pop rock, I guess? Instrumentation is more diverse and produced than previous Smiths records, which I believe improves the sound. But Holy Smokes, Morrissey sucks big time. Just an absolute bland, tuneless, nothing voice, singing like he’s making it up as he goes. The lyrics are equally lackluster, subtracting from the record. How does this guy have so much representation on this list?

I just don’t like the Smiths.

Wasn’t a huge fan of this one. It reminded me of a sad break up album that just kind of kept going.

They were okay. Don't think I'd listen again.

Didn't love it. A bit more serious than I was in the mood for on this listen - maybe another day it would have felt a bit better?

2-3, мн меланхолия

Can’t say I loved this one. Morrissey’s voice was a bit whiny, and only a few of the songs hit for me.

Not a fan of the Smiths but had a few moments and not an unlistenable album.

Didn’t do much for me, but grateful it was only half an hour.

I think in another life I’d really like the smiths but I don’t need them

Not something that I loved but was listenable

Similar to my Coldplay take: I can't see why people hate the Smiths so much. Definitely an enjoyable enough listen but i don't think i fully appreciate their music the way some of their avid fans do. I could see a world where I am exposed to them more and/or do a deep dive and get a feel for why people are drawn to them, but i don't have the time or interest. Jangle Pop / new wave, proto- indie/britpop

This is kind of before alternative rock really found it's footing for me. You can see where the roots came from but there's not really much I enjoy about it. Kind of bland and soft.

tnuc elbareffusni

Meh. This music is so sloooow. As for the lyrics, I don't know if "pretentious" is the right word, but "bad" surely is

Strangeways, here we come not.

What's with the grrrrrrrrrrrrrowling? Sounds like weird cookie monster or some grumpy baby??? Against my better judgement I enjoyed some earlier Smiths albums I've got from this list. Not too sure about this one though.

😴😴😴

The Cure >>>>> The Smiths Girlfriend in a Coma is great though.

It was fine. middle of the pack ok to listen to.

A few good ones, still as depressing as when I first heard it.

I want to like Morrisey and The Smiths based on their influence. But I kinda hate it. Quit your British bitching.

Just feels kinda cheesy 80s music with groan-worthy edgy lyrics. Morrissey is a dick & all, but separating the artist from the art, his vocals still suck. A few decent melodies can't save this.

Its the Smiths, I generally enjoy their sound but it didn't stand out for me

It's OG emo, basically.

We get it author. You love Morrissey

I find this to kind of drone on, despite how varied it is. Morrisey's voice brings it back to that same droning, dreary quality. His voice is distinct and iconic, for better and for worse. If I wanted to set a very particular feel for the 80s I'd use the Smiths, but I just have no desire to listen to this.

awful. guitars ok.

I disliked this album even though I have come to terms with liking both the Smiths and Morrissey’s solo work. This is self aggrandizing taken to ludicrous extremes and comes off childish at times. Morrissey also sounds ill on several tracks.

Meh...not bad but not exciting either. 2/5

Didn’t like this anywhere near as much as the other albums of theirs I’ve heard and much as I can appreciate Johnny Marr’s guitar, Morrissey’s voice meandering around trying to find a melody really puts me off. That said, the first two tracks were great; it just really went downhill from there for me.

Dont' really get the Smiths. And I do know what Strangeways is.

Nja…! Not so great.

This is the longest short album I've listened to yet. This is airy and uneventful across the board. I'm bored to tears I think, and I'm not unsure that's what they were going for. Fav tracks: N/A

Aika mid. Ei nyt sillein erityisen huonoa, mutta ei kappaleissa oikein mitään koukuttavaakaan ollut. Semmoista kevyttä britti rockia. Ei oikein parhaitakaan.

Never used to like them, he wasn't my cup of tea. This was reinforced by seeing Johnny Marr deliver blistering versions of his tunes, sung properly, at a festival. Not sure any of them were off this album though - it's OK, but won't be listening again

Boring voice

This album shows The Smiths can be as boring and predictable as anyone.

did not finish

Fun, and emo record

It's ok I guess. Whomever created this list is a bit of a Morrissey fan boy though, because there's too many albums on here of his. Love me some Marr though.

Didn’t hate it , but wasn’t taken by it either 2.5

Not a good smiths album. Not a good album.

Goddamn, Morrissey is such a little bitch.

I liked the first track and feel, but the effort to listen to a while album was too much. Probably fair to say I like the Smiths, maybe a song at a time. I really really can't do a full album. It evokes too much irksome awkwardness after a while and if I have to explain you won't understand.
