Reviews (page 3 of 13)

Can't go wrong with the Smiths

This is one of those excellent artists I feel like I've heard OF, but never heard. Very captivating

Well, here it is, my third and final Smiths album to review, and Strangeways might be their best work. The overall sound is bigger than their previous releases, with some great string and horn arrangements, but the album still maintains that signature pop sound that The Smiths crafted. The lyrics are just as deep and slightly ambiguous as always, full of political and social commentary and themes that explore relationships. Every song was great, and the end result is a strong album from start to finish: “A Rush and a Push” has an urgency to it, and I wonder how much the impending breakup of the band contributed to that sound. I loved the guitar at the beginning, and the ‘love as colonialism’ allegory in the lyrics. “I Started Something” has some great horn arrangements, and the lyrical theme about putting yourself out there as a gay person was great, and something that anyone can probably relate to. “Death of a Disco Dancer” has some great guitar work at the beginning; it really gives the song a haunting sound to match the dark lyrics about the AIDS crisis. The song has a great outro too, with the organ/synth and piano and booming drums. “Girlfriend in a Coma” might be my favorite song on the album. Great vocals, great strings arrangements leading into the chorus, and fantastic guitar playing. “Stop Me” has some great guitars, and I really like the tinkling percussion sounds. “Last Night I Dreamt” has a great dream like feel to it. The opening piano and screaming, coupled with the distorted whooshing sound really sets the tone. “Unhappy Birthday” is so joyful sounding, but contrast so strongly with the hateful and mean lyrics. Usually, Morrisey’s digs at people are a bit more roundabout, but I love the directness here. “Paint a Vulgar Picture” has great, biting lyrics, and great criticisms of the record industry and how predatory it can be. The horn arrangements in the background are really great too. “Death at One’s Elbow” has some great bass playing, and I really enjoyed the upbeat sound. I loved that this song had a bit of a rockabilly sound to it. “I Won’t Share You” has great guitar playing, and it was a great way to close out the album, and essentially shut the door on The Smiths’ time together as a band. This was a fantastic album, and I’m sad that this is my last Smiths album to review. I’ll definitely be returning to this album.

I absolutely love The Smiths, and like their other records, this is another five out of five for me. Strangeways, Here We Come is an incredible album and, sadly, their last. It captures a band at the height of their creative powers. The songwriting feels expansive and confident, pushing their sound slightly further while still keeping that unmistakable Smiths identity. There is wit, melancholy and drama running through the whole record. Johnny Marr’s guitar work is as inventive as ever, and Morrissey’s lyrics feel reflective and sharp in equal measure. It sounds like a band evolving, even as they were coming to an end. Favourite track: A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours. A bold and unconventional opener that sets the tone perfectly. Least favourite track: None. Every song earns its place. Album artwork: Striking and stylish. Elegant, slightly mysterious and unmistakably The Smiths

Gut! Wieder eine lohnenswerte Neuentdeckung für mich. 5/5

Banger

I really loved this. Never listened to much of the smiths but this one will be played again for sure.

You know what? For all Morrissey has done to tarnish their reputation, they have two of the best albums ever made, and I'm still there for it. This is one of them (the other is The Queen is Dead.)

Masterpiece. I can’t give less than five stars.

These guys are known to have all their songs sounding the exact same, so imagine my surprise when some of the songs were not painfully alike their other music. Tickle me pink! I found myself wanting to listen to the words, wanting to know the meaning, and wanting to be enveloped in the instrumentals. I love their more popular music, but I was so confused about how they are such a. beloved band. I get it now. I want this album as an IV.

Really great album. 4.75

Svanasöngur einnar bestu hljómsveitar allrar tíma. Smiths voru nefnilega hljómsveit ekki bara sérvitur söngvari. Girlfriend in a coma er eitt af mínum uppáhaldslögum, þvílíkur texti hjá M. Platan í heild frábær og rúllar ótrúlega vel. Þetta er svo gott stöff. A rush and a push, Stop me if you think you heard this one before, Last night I dreamt somebody loved me. Endalaust af yndislegum lögum með súrum textum. The Queen is dead er vissulega uppáhalds Smiths platan mín, en þeir eru aldrei að fara að fá minna en 5 stjörnur frá mér.

Maybe not my favorite Smiths album but it’s pretty great

Great album, smiths at their peak.

The swan song of The Smiths. A bit more poppy and better produced than their previous albums, but with the same quality. Johnny Marr is in form, and adepts many new styles on this album without it ever becoming anything other than The Smiths, Morrissey has kept his working-class intellectual lyrics that are as sharp, funny and biting as ever. Tragic stories in one sentence ( “Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me / no hope, no harm, just another false alarm") typical Smiths cynicism ("“And if you think peace is a common goal / That goes to show how little you know”) Or funny while describing the pain every man can feel when he sings it (" I crashed down on the crossbar / And the pain was enough to make a shy, bald, Buddhist reflect / And plan a mass murder") And please don't forget bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. They are both in perfect form on this album and complete one of the few perfect albums. Yes, we all know what a douche Morrissey became (or already was?) but even assholes can be very talented. An album I gladly keep singing along to.

First half every songs a banger. Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me is a masterpiece. Unreal

Wow, this caught me off guard with how much I actually enjoyed this. It’s a really tight, strong album. At only 36 mins, I managed to run thru it 4 times today, it’s really good. Death of a Disco Dancer is such a great tune, nervous, frantic energy, Johnny Marr does such a good job letting the song breathe and building the guitar throughout. This is the most entertaining I’ve found Morrissey, he’s got growls, yelps, whines, jokes. Ultimately, there’s so much more variety here than I would expect from a Smiths album, it still has their classic moodiness that you expect but filled out with more than just that. On Unhappy Birthday, I find the line “and if you should die, I may feel slightly sad but I won’t cry” just so funny and makes Morrissey endearing almost. Having never heard this release before it really did give me a new appreciation for The Smiths. Seeing as this was their final release, I’d say they finished strong. 5 stars

Beautiful album never gets boring

Fantastic album! Never heard of the band before. Easily listen with fantastic vocals. Would listen to more by the band.

I've always been quite fond of The Smiths, with half a dozen or so of their big hits in my music collection for the last 20 years or so. I only knew one song from this entire album, and it wasn't even one I knew terribly well. This was sublime. I'm starting to find myself clock-watching during some album choices, willing the album to be over soon, even if I'm enjoying it. I often just want to get to the end so I can give my rating and move on. If I decide to relisten, then that's cool, but that first play through often drags. It's like I want to see how big my meal is going to be before attempting to eat it. I did the opposite here, hoping this would just keep going on and on, then very disappointed when it finally ended. It's just so perfectly formed, unique guitar playing, depressing but amusing lyrics, great delivery by the entire band. So many little moments that I can see copied by bands who came later, the Stone Roses, Oasis, etc. all borrowed from this much more than I ever realised. This is also about the most even album I think I've ever heard, with not a single filler, but also without an obvious "hit" inserted halfway through. I can't see how this could deserve less than 5 stars.

Fuck Morrissey but damn this album is good……. no skips

Perfect

I love smiths. I love their style, I love indie rock. The influence of this group is difficult to overestimate. I think that “The queen is dead” is better, but this I rate on 5, because I am really into indie

Everybody loves the smiths right?

My first album on the list that I'm intimately familiar with. It doesn't have the hits, but it hits different. It's probably the most consistent Smiths album with a solid set of songs bearing the weight through the middle. Obviously a solid 5/5 with no reservations.

Love the smiths

Lofi beats to study/slit your wrists to

I love this album!!

Beautiful and surprising from start to finish. A Rush and a Push... and Girlfriend in a Coma may be my favorites but that's just scratching the surface. Revelatory.

This album came up a few days after Morrisey's Your Arsenal and you really notice what the other 3 brought to the party. Rythm section was tight, johnny Marr s guitar was stellar.

I think I might love The Smiths....

as the third album of the smiths on this project, strangeways, here we come marks a change in their style. since it's their last album, i found myself sad that we will never know where their music could've gone. regardless, this album doesn't have the punk sound as their others. instead, the smiths went more into the early alternative scene. i found myself enjoying this album more than their others, which is such a bittersweet feeling. if there was anything to dislike, then i found myself more interested in the first half. side A has more energy, whereas side B is more morose, especially with a song titled like "unhappy birthday." "last night i dreamt that somebody loved me" (aka the smiths giving fallout boy vibes with their song titles) starts off side B, and it's so delightfully gloomy. the decision to have a haunting two minute haunting instrumental introduction with background audio of a mid-eighties british miners' strike is inspired. and the basis for "a rush and a push and the land is ours" as a poem by oscar wilde's mom (!) and referencing the flippant colonialism of england towards ireland. morrissey has a lot of sketchy opinions, but both of these i respect. this is part of why i enjoy the smiths: their commitment to social issues. johnny marr's decision not to play guitar for "a rush and a push and the land is ours" is mind-bogggling. it reminds me of prince's decision to omit the bass line of "when doves cry". both situations were unexpected, back then and now. these kinds of creative choices allow the songs to stand out against the test of time. as always, fuck morrissey.

really good!

When this album came out it was kind of a life raft for Smiths fans, because it came out right after the band called it quits. Some of it didn't click with me at the time and I was surprised to read that the band generally considered Strangeways to be their best. I can see why now. It's their most musically diverse and mature album, the album that sounds the least like a typical Smiths album. It sounds like an album by a band that is playing at their highest level, but ready to move on from each other. Strangeways, indeed. The Smiths never made a bad album, so I have no complaints on the quality of this one. I'm glad to come back to it after 35 odd years, because I find myself appreciating songs more now that I was lukewarm on as a teenager. The band incorporates a variety of instruments that give these songs a really rich sound. Johnny Marr tempers his jangly sound in favor of more varied, muscular riffs, to astounding effect. The increased use of piano, keyboard and strings add so much depth to the sound here as well. Morrissey is in fine voice as always, and his lyrics balance melancholy softness, cynicism and wry humor masterfully. Fave songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Death of a Disco Dancer, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, Girlfriend in a Coma, I Won't Share You, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Paint a Vulgar Picture, A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Unhappy Birthday, Death at One's Elbow

Upbeat post-punk indie album, on the surface it sounds very upbeat and happy, but the lyrics fly in the face of this with frequent references to death and suffering. Very easy to listen to, while also having a surprising amount of depth

Never realised how much I like The Smiths

Excellent stuff. Good enough to almost make you forget that Morrissey is an arsehole these days.

Great album

Perfect 10/10

Morrissey is a twat. But fuck it I love his gloomy voice

Most underrated Smiths album and potentially their best

Just great, like all their albums

Unreal

10/10 every Smiths album is absolute gold but fuck Morrissey tho

A beautiful send-off from one of the best bands of the 80s Morrissey’s compelling lyricism is on full display here, along with Johnny Marr’s iconic guitar-playing Favourite tracks: A Rush and a Push…, I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish, Girlfriend In a Coma, Stop Me If You…, Last Night I Dreamt…, Paint A Vulgar Picture

Love that one

One of my favourites

fucks me off that every time i want to listen to the majesty of the Smiths i have to internally justify it that when it was written it was written by a liberally minded anti-thatcher man and not the fucking media hungry right wing nut job he has become. the first half of this album is brilliant but the second half sounds like a band on its way out that has run out of ideas. so as much as i love the smiths it's one of those occasions where its better for us all that they didn't stay together and churn out an album every few years a la rolling stones. if Death of a disco dancer was released post grunge we'd be saying they were influenced by it. which is an arse about tit way of saying the smiths did grunge before grunge. love peace and harmony? very nice. maybe in the next world.

Oh, it's Morrissey once again. This preening prick needs to stop trying to penetrate my eardrums with his racist rants about meat and stick to making records like this.

So Smithy! I hadn't previously listened to this album. It's great!

i love the smiths

Pretty sure this album spent more time in my tape deck of the toyota celica longer than most other tapes.

All hail Johnny Marr and Morrissey. A Rush and Push, Last Night I Dreamt and Unhappy Birthday are top shelf Smiths tracks. Though Girlfriend in a Coma is strangely peppy and Death At One's Elbow is an uneven inclusion, the rest of the album is perfect blend of Johnny's jangly haunting guitar and Morrissey strange and engaging lyrical content. Really love this album.

Just as it came together, the band fell apart. Everything you expect from the Smiths is here - cynical, urbane Morrissey, cool licks from Marr and a great overall sound. The trilogy of Girlfriend in a Coma / Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before / Last Night I Dreamy That Somebody Loved Me is some of their best work and I Won’t Share You sounds suspiciously heartfelt.

This album is the Smiths' most varied work. It is incredibly lush owing to the synthesized horn and string arrangements but also shows a rougher more rock edge in places. The opening track does away with their signature jangle pop sound by omitting the guitars. Lyrically, the album is typical Morrissey with lots of self-loathing and acerbic sarcasm throughout. This album also has the distinction of being the Smiths' last album which is striking as they were innovating and changing elements of their sound right until the end.

Classic album and this is a must-listen because it is the Smiths last album before breaking up and shows how they expanded their sound a bit. You can feel the tension between Morrissey and Marr, but that makes it good.

My minor complaints about Morrissey’s weird grunting on the first two tracks do not detract from how much I enjoy this album overall.

What can I say, it's The Smiths.

Loved this album, would listen again and again 😍 full of eloquent melancholy. Fave song - 'stop me if you think that you've heard this one before'

Nostalgia of the Smiths and Mod revival of 2013, taking me back to high school summers

This is one album by The Smiths that I wasn't fully familiar with and what can I say? They just don't disappoint.

Classic

Already one of the GOATS

This is the third album by The Smiths in this project, and I think it is my favorite so far. How can you go wrong with such titles such as "Girlfriend in a Coma," "Death of a Disco Dancer," and "Unhappy Birthday"? "Girlfriend in a Coma," by the way, has always been my favorite Smiths song. The only really dreary moment here was the first two minutes of the also-perfectly-dreary-titled "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me." But overall I really liked this album, and it's too bad The Smiths ended just as they got to this really good place.

A Smiths album I actually liked! I played it three times! Super catchy and I could tell the songs apart. Finally!

Not the best The Smiths album but it still is amazing.

STRANGEWAYS! I love this album. A Rush And A Push was probably the first Smiths song I loved. Something about that keyboard line. I could very easily add the whole record to the Notable Songs list... It's just too good. Notable Songs - A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Girlfriend In A Coma 10/10 Album. No skips or lesser songs. No complaints. Love it.

The only two bands people are impressed by having seen twice are Nirvana and the Smiths - the latter at the Hacienda and Oxford Apollo, a gig at which future life partner was at but as yet unbenownst to me. All of their albums are five stars, and this is no exception. On yet another relisten you can hear how they had perfected the Smiths sound to such a ridiculous degree that they had said all there was to say: the 2-minute pop thrill dominated by Marr's chiming guitar and rousing choruses (Girlfriend In A Coma, Stop Me, Unhappy Birthday, A Rush and A Push) and the moody workout with a slower pace and more expansive arrangements (Disco Dancer, Last Night, I Won't Share You). Apart from that one can hear some of the early Morrissey quirkiness transforming into People I Do Not Like and Why They Are Awful: here disco dancers, record company executives and girlfriends. Alternative: Unattainable Heroes On A Pedastal who Still Make Me Miserable Even Though I Adore Them (Last Night.., Dead Pop Stars, Dan).

Very Good.

I like the synth evolution of The Smiths’ sound on this album and mourn for what could’ve been had the band stayed together. There’s some misogyny about this album. Or maybe it’s misanthropy. Either way, it somehow adds to the mystique of the sound.

Polarising, even for me. But when I'm in the mood for the Smiths they're great. When I'm not I'd listen to almost anything else. "Death of a disco dancer" is fantastic. Maybe was just in the mood but it's a 5 for me.

one of my favourite albums

Growing up in Manchester I also obviously grew up with The Smiths and New Order, and it was the perfect counter soundtrack to the shite on the radio from the mid 80s onwards. I listened to this one less than TQID or Hatful of Hollow mainly, and they might have more straightforward classic Smith's songs, but this pushes the boat out musically and atmospherically, Death of a Disco Dancer being a prime example. Last Night I Dreamt... (surely one of their greatest ever songs). And there's still the pop, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me if you think etc. Unhappy Birthday. The lyrics are great and affecting as ever. I'm beginning to get more comfortable separating 80s Morrissey from whoever this is now, and really enjoy the genius of what they created together back then. Anything else is pure self-denial. Some magnificent stuff here.

This was really solid, I don't have much to elaborate on,

'Girlfriend in a Coma', 'Unhappy Birthday', 'A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours'...

Tää on kuitenkin kans ollut kuuntelussa niin paljon, ja tällä albumilla on pari kappaletta, joita pidän omien kaikkien aikojen suosikkien joukossa The Smithsiltä, että taidan antaa tälle vitosen. Suosikkeja: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Already love The Smiths Hadn’t heard this album before Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Love Me Unhappy Birthday

Very good album.

Loved it

Yesssssss

As always amazing s9ngs by a massive walker.

This might be my favorite The Smiths albums. I listened to all the others... and this just beats The Queen is Dead for me. You see... it's such *funny* album. 5/5 - iconic

Great, as all The Smiths albums.

Awesome album. Haven't listened in a long while. Went on a Smith's listening spree after this.

Impossible to be impartial with this band but that’s not really a problem when you hear how good they are. This album, like almost everything The Smiths put out, is a pop masterpiece. Plain and simple. From the very first track Johnny Marr’s ambition to move away from the domain of jangle pop into a more expansive sound impresses itself. In fact this record in some respects is the full realisation of everything The Smiths wanted to be. Not beholden to the past but greatly indebted to it. Also noteworthy is the surprisingly abstract, though no less literate, lyrical content of Morrissey. So much can be said about the enigmatic frontman which might best be saved for another of his albums. But unquestionably he raised the bar for lyrical contemplation in pop music, and in many ways contemporary music criticism is centred around considerations of his style, and the droves of imitators he spawned. An undeniably singular pop group who have never been rivalled.

Cracking album, it's a shame Morrissey is such a bell end - I was tempted to dock a star - but Johnny Marr is a wizard, so 5/5 it is.

I really liked meat is murder when I listened to it but I didn’t realize until this album that the smiths was a much more modern band. I like their sound and they feel much older of a sound than the other bands of the 80s

This album was moody and irritating.

There should be a sub category for people that made beautiful music while being ugly to each other

This is a great album and an excellent jumping off point for both The Smiths and also for pretty much all post-punk 80s stuff. 5/5

Despite Morrissey turning to the dark side, I can still listen to this and experience unrestrained joy! Who else could make the idea of their girlfriend being in a coma sound so appealing?

Hello old friend. I much prefer Meat Is Murder, but I'll accept this on the list! Too short and a couple of throwaway numbers on this, but that's always been the Smiths style. Great album.

wonderful

Already listen to this fairly regularly, so knew it would be 5 stars before I played it. Love the lyrics and guitar riffs. "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" my favourite track.

It seems every time I've listened to this album I've listened to the whole thing which matches with how I'm feeling abou these 2 listens. It's a great album, I probably need to spend more time with it. Girlfriend in a Coma is certainly a standout

Amazing album 10* Cover art 5/5

I'm glad they took a different turn on what would be their final album and didn't replicate The Queen is Dead. It doesn't have as many notable songs, but the music and production feels more sophisticated. It feels more grand and luscious, especially the string arrangements. Girlfriend in a Coma is an excellent example of this. Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before is probably their most accessible song on here, but still holds a lot of weight. You do get a couple of others that sound like they could've been from the Queen era, including Unhappy Birthday. But then you get tracks like Death of a Disco Dancer and Last Night I Dreamt... that goes into darker territory that musically hasn't been explored much.

Another charming release by The Smiths. It’s not The Queen is Dead, but definitely is a masterpiece.

What a coincidence. In my previous rating I said that I had other music that I prefer for "sadboy time" and look no further but the king of mope himself: Morrissey. Not my favorite Smiths album but it's still great. Everything Smiths and Morrissey is a 5. One of those personal rules. I don't give a shit what kind of asshole Moz might actually be. His vocals and lyrics with Johnny Marr's guitar playing is always welcome to my ears.

Rating: 10/10

No hope, no harm; just another false alarm

10 pjesama oko 36min, dosta.

Yes, it's very good

I love this! This is sepia-toned, melancholic, rueful, brooding, gorgeous. I like the distorted guitars and jangly melodies.

Fuck Morrissey

Ok. That last record tricked me. I somehow had the first song on repeat. It was atypical for the rest of the record, which included rock and rap elements. I didn't care for it. So I would have given Duck Rock a 1/5 stars. For the record. Now, Strangways, Here We Come... The best Smith's record, IMHO. Enough said. 5/5.

Sum is greater than smiths individuals. Marr really pulls it together

Love the Smiths!

Su hit "Girlfriend in a coma" o "I won't share you".

I used to be obsessed with this album. Obseeeeesed. I also used to be obsessed with the boy who introduced me to The Smiths, but eventually The Smiths became more important to me than he. Strangeways isn't even their best album, but perhaps it's their most fully realised, a wholly conceived album rather than a collection of song. A band on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I've generally given up on Los Smiths due to Morrissey being problematic, but he is but one quarter of the group so I am happy to revisit their charms from time to time. So let's praise Johnny Marr's guitar and the melodic suburban drama. The best song is "Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before".

This really is a fantastic album. I'm kinda tempted to deduct a star because Morrissey is such a prat, but that hardly seems fair. Fave track - "Girlfriend in a Coma" maybe, on this listen through. I could honestly go with a different track each time, though - about three quarters of them are candidates....

So cooooool

Listed to it all day. Fab.

I listened to this a few months ago on a recommendation from a friend and thought it was great then. I enjoyed it even more this time through. I struggle to pick a favorite track because I really enjoyed all of them and each one stands up well on its own. Maybe "Girlfriend in a Coma," which is ironic because I singled it out as an oddball the first time. I like this more than I remember liking The Queen is Dead (which is also fantastic) probably due to being not quite so dark overall.

I enjoyed this album so much , I listened to the Queen is dead after

9 septembrie// lucram la prezentarea nutriento

Up there in the top two best smiths albums… which makes this an automatic 5*

So so good. Loved girlfriend in a coma. The depressing musical start to Last Night I Dreamt That SomEbody loved me was fuckinnsick

Loved it. Never heard it before.

AMAZING! Where have I been in this world without The Smiths?

5/5 - loved it

So good

I love this album!!

Favourite song: I started something I couldn’t finish

i have always want to be a manic pixie girl! not as good as their earlier album though. not sure why this one was selected as a representation of The Smiths

William, it was really something

Love this era of music

Always been a Smith's fan, never listened to an album though, just the hits. Enjoyed hearing this.

I grew up on the queen is dead. I didn't get a copy of this until I was an adult. I remember not liking it much on my first listen, but it quickly grew on me. Death of a Disco dancer is such a perfect song for our times. Girlfriend in a coma is hilarious. If you've ever been in a toxic relationship, this song will hit way too close to home.

Acá me gustan mucho "Death of a Disco Dancer" y "Unhappy Birthday", aunque no tengo skips. 10/10

Classic.

Excellent album, all songs are gold. 10/10 album!

Melancholy, Morrissey has such a haunting voice.

Not my favorite album but it's still the smiths

So. Fucking. Good.

Still wonderful...

So I did really enjoy this album although I really can’t put why finger on exactly why or what did it for me. His voice is great, the music catchy, the lyrics I didn’t look at but I’m sure they were good if it’s on this list lol. But I did add two songs to the playlist so it’s a keeper!!

Excellent at conveying feelings. A gem that transcend borders.

The Smithsin joutsenlaulu ja bändi olikin jo hajonnut levyn ilmestyessä. Kyseessä on hyvin onnistunut albumi, vaikkei se ylläkkään edeltäjiensä tasolle. Oikeastaan Strangewaysin ei edes tarvitsisi olla tällä listalla, sillä Meat is Murder ja The Queen is Dead ovat ne keskeiset Smiths-albumit, jotka jokaisen tulisi kuulla edes kerran eläessään.

i do like the smiths

Loved it. Listened twice. Will return again.

Cover kirkata

very unique, catchy, and exceptional

I will always love u morissey. Nothing new tho

Qué triste todo. Igual me gustó.

So I actually enjoyed this Smiths album more than any other. They are definitely more tolerable than Morrissey solo 3.5 / 5

I liked it ! Not really my style but tje songs were good I added a song to my playlist (last night I dreamt that somebody was loving me or something like that)

girlfriend in a coma and he knows it's serious???? "I love The Smiths" - honestly, this was a solid album

all time classic because it's the smiths but probably the most uneven of their albums (some classics, some clunkers)

Another great album, great tunes, great melody it makes people understand why The Smiths are still important. Favorite Songs: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish ; Girlfriend in a Coma ; Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before

7/10 I like the smiths

Loved the album. Was surprised Ive missed them all this time. Lyrically deep

7.5/10

Well this is embarrassing, I like The Smiths

I don't know if this would get a 4 under different circumstances, but it's just better than the previous string of 3's. And it has been established (I think) that I like crooning. So Morrissey is not a liability for me here.

this is my favorite of the Smiths albums we've had so far

I have a Smiths poster hanging up in my room. This just sounds like music to me. It's weird, but in a way that I like. Morrissey's froggy voice just sounds like the month of November to me. He can do the same thing every time and I'm gonna eat it up. The Smith's could release a 5 track album with barely any lyrics on it and I'm still gonna eat it up. I know there are other albums to come, so I'm only gonna give this one 4 stars, but it's the best of the best 4 stars so far. My favorites are Death of a Disco Dancer, Stop Me if You Think You've Heard this One Before, and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

Its the one The Smith's album I've never really listened to properly, the first few tracks I'm really enjoying maybe I should of listened to this more before now, its better than I thought it would be so far, not there best but still a solid album and I highly rate it.

It’s probably my 4th favourite Smiths album and perhaps the one I know / I’ve listened to the least. I’m not sure it needs to be on the list, that’s 3 of their 4 albums! Nonetheless, it’s still an album I like and it just about earns 4 stars.

Great 80's music - reminds me of college.

Me hizo acordar muchisimo a cosas de The Beatles.

The smiths are cool

It really is just such a good album to listen to when you’re not feeling good and you want to wallow. Not a song on it I would skip, even Unhappy Birthday which is definitely the weakest lyrically. Obligatory, it’s a shame Morrissey sucks so much mention. This album would just be perfect for a miserable day if I could listen to The Smiths without thinking about that. Fav song: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Least fav: Unhappy Birthday

The perfect album for when I'm feeling like I'm the first person to ever have to actually do work at work. Let myself be indulgently self pitying along with The Smiths for 36 minutes and then I pull myself together (this is the step Morrissey seems to have forgotten). Favourite song: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Least: Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me

i have listened to this album back to back a few times before and it's pretty satisfying to listen to.

Strangeways features some very good Smiths songs and a few of my all-time favorite Morrissey-isms, like “I’ve come to wish you an unhappy birthday / because you’re evil and you lie / and if you should die / I might feel slightly sad / but I won’t cry.” But it’s too fussed over and over-embellished with strings and synths and whatnot to be the best Smiths album, and as much as I love them, three releases from a band that only cut four studio albums during their career is a bit much for a list with only 1,001 slots.

Man I love The Smiths, it’s just always good music.

he do be grunting a lot Faves: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish

A good one too, not my favorite album from them, but nice.

Great album. 6 perfect songs, 4 very good songs and my favorite Smiths song is on this album. I’m not going to reveal the answers to any of these suppositions. I’m going to be dodgy and unpredictable like Morrissey

I think this 7.5/10.The perfect album . Morrissey's vocal were at their peak on this album. Death of a disco dancer legendary brillian song. "I won't share you" ohh i know it’s over is such an underrated song especially the liyrics they kill me. Probably one of best goodbye album bands ever made

Excited to finally give this a spin. The band is clearly trying to expand their sound here, and while I'm definitely a fan of The Smiths trademark sound over this, there was plenty to like. Death of a Disco Dancer is amazing. Girlfriend In A Coma is hilarious. Unhappy Birthday is so on the nose it's a bit off putting but I can see it growing on me. I Won't Share You is a beautiful final track.

Glorious misery

Great album. I was reading a book about Reaganism and Margret Thatchers ideologies and felt this was very fitting. I always feel like the smiths are a great juxtaposition band. They can sound so happy but with haunting lyrics or visa versa. I am unsure whether I’ve actually ever listened to a smiths album is full before but I feel like this was so full of stuff I would have missed if I hadn’t.

Perhaps not as many instant classics as the albums meat is murder, the smiths, or the queen is dead, but still quintessential Smiths. Felt like I heard some influences on Fontaines DC in this latest relisten

Great sound.

Banger after banger. As much animosity as me and most everyone else has for Morrisey it is undeniable that The Smiths were master craftsmen. My one complaint is the sound never really evolves that much from earlier work.

ive enjoyed the entirety of every the smith's albuns ive heard so far this is the only one that has any misses til now

This is my first time listening to the full album. As a kid I was familiar with Girlfriend in a Coma and Stop Me if think that you heard this one before. I had seen the videos on MTV. This was also the last album before they broke up. I think as I have become more familiar with their music I think the album is decent as an album. It’s not the best. The music is good and Morrissey’s wit and self-deprecating woe is me lyrics are still there. But you could tell he was growing tired on the industry. Yes he became an ass. But the music is still pretty good.

Classic smiths

Enjoyed this far more than I expected to.

bom porém lento queen is dead melhor

Not as good as The queen is dead but still very decent. Fav track: “Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one”. Solid 4

The album I would recommend as an introduction to the Smiths. Given it was the end, it’s a a wonderful sign off. Listening now you just have to sadly gloss over what a weapons fgrade bell-end Morrissey is now. But back in the day….this was as cool as it got. 4.

Hei, minähän pidin tästä! Hieno albumi! 4/5

I generally can't get enough of the Smiths, it continues with this one. Some may find it much of the same, but hey... its still great.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 I'd heard four songs off of the album before I listened to this one, three of which I'd say are the album's best, so odds seemed stacked slightly against Strangeways for exceeding my expectations. How did they do it? Those Smiths kept up their momentum until the last three songs or so, and even "I Won't Share You"—the fourth I'd heard—will I'm sure hit just right when the right time hits. The only reason this isn't higher is because nothing is like, transcendentally good (although "Unhappy Birthday" comes close), otherwise this would be an easy 5. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

I think it's a little more acoustic than their other albums. It's a great album and the band even says it's their favorite. It sounds advanced for it's time. Great album.

I love love love the kind of ironic lyrics in some of these, like girlfriend in a coma is ICONIC!!

Actually quite good! Probably wouldn’t listen again but 3.5

I am not too impressed with the album but it grows as it goes on and has some great songs even if some of its low points stop me thinking it is a truly great album and just a good album.

least favorite smiths album. this one is featured in 1001 albums to listen to before you die? sure there are some good stuff but it’s plagued by what i call “songwriting that will be a staple of morrissey’s solo work” i can’t stand girlfriend in a coma it’s easily one of there worst songs. funny enough after relistening this album has some of the strongest songs in their catalog. and some of their weakest lol

It was really good 🙂👌. There were a couple of forgettable songs on here, but most of them are really good. Overall, I would give this one a 4/5! 🫡🌷

Good rhythm, interesting lyrics. I read that this one was the last album of the Smiths and I must say it was a good good-bye album

Quietly nice

This is perfectly on par with 'The Queen Is Dead'. Again, it features some of The Smiths' best work but, likewise, is also stuffed with just enough filler to keep it from receiving top marks.

This was great. Bonus points for being short. More bonus points for all the reviews of people hating on that troll Morissey. The man has people pressed, and I am obsessed.

I prefer The Queen Is Dead, but this album is a close second to that. Just really nothing like this band, before or since, truly iconic and original.

Big question.

Knew of the Smiths, hadn't heard this album before today, liked it!

I love the smiths. I said I love The Smiths!

Probably my least favourite Smiths record (not that they ever put out a bad one mind you.) Kinda cool how you can hear the sound/direction of the band change on this one. Find it very interesting that Marr considers this their strongest effort, makes me wonder how much further their sound would’ve changed/developed if they’d continued.

Good. I've heard of them before. Really good at having most of the songs sound so... i dunno... like the Smiths? Like, does a great job stylistically. Favorites: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish

Sadder than I remember, think it's because it's the break up album. Couple of tunes fall flat but some of their very best is on here, especially the middle section

made me sad, which is good! 8/10

a solid album, but not my favorite of theirs

Let me not be another “Morrissey is a twat” comment. Aside from him being a Royal Twat, he makes excellent music. There is so much variety to this, classic quirkiness, and strange stylings that just work. Refreshing as can be.

Great music. Never have the chance to really listen but Ive always liked the Smiths. I've sung variations of Girlfriend in a Coma to my spouse and cats for 16 years.

Some really catchy tunes to be found here, it’s not overly long and the production suits the mood of the album.

this was great!!

Sadly, the Smiths could not stay together. One of the distinct highlights of the 1980s post-punk landscape, the Smiths as a group conjoined the power of adolescent angst with gorgeous pop melodies. The marriage of Johnny Marr’s music to Morrissey’s lyrics came together for one last push with this, the Smiths’ fourth and final studio album. With Stephen Street as co-producer, the British quartet achieved a fuller sound that made Marr’s guitar colorings particularly bright with strings and horns added in strategic spots. Morrissey matched the production’s additional hues by writing another batch of punchy, pithy musings, including “Girlfriend In a Coma,” in which solemn horror is eased by an indelible melody. “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before,” “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me,” and “Unhappy Birthday” encapsulate and extend Morrissey’s heartfelt self-pity. He’s clearly aware of the impression he’s making and reveling in his own cheekiness. This playful demeanor balances the desperate anger that lurks underneath (“Paint a Vulgar Picture,” “I Won’t Share You’)

hell yeah!!!!!! banger of an album for today. loved

So many bangers: “Girlfriend in a Coma,” “Stop Me,” and (a personal fave) “Unhappy Birthday” among them. So listenable.

Fantastic instrumention, experimentation, and vocals, but dear god is morrisey annoying lol- insufferable lyrics

Better than I expected. I can't see this ever becoming a mainstay in my listening rotation, but I enjoyed the album.

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅

This is why I’m doing this challenge. A band I overlooked/ dismissed back in the day. I really enjoyed this more and more on repeat listens. Four stars. Fave track - Last night…

I love the Smiths, although naturally I loved them much more when I was a teenager. Now Morrissey annoys me more often (Marr and the band are still top quality though, even more so). This is not my favorite though, outside of the Queen Is Dead, my favorite work by the smiths are the compilation albums. Still enjoyed listening to it, immediately transported me back in time to high school

2 bushels chill, a milk jug of moody, and a dash silly, this album really tickled my fancy. Stand out tracks: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours, Unhappy Birthday I'm still shocked I like 80s music. What is happening??

It’s not The Queen Is Dead, but it’s still pretty great.

Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me 💔

oh morrissey, i just can't escape you, huh... this is the fourth and final album by the smiths, released a bit of time after the band had broke up. typically somber and moody... i feel like morrissey has been consistently solid throughout the time i've spent listening to all this stuff on this platform. a fittingly melodramatic, depressing, and... trademark smiths sendoff, that's what i think this album is.

Jeg elsker nemlig The Smiths. Det er bedre end Meat Is Murder men ikke helt på niveau med The Queen is Dead og self-titled.

Jeg elsker The Smiths.

Given my musical proclivities, The Smiths is one of the top bands most strangely absent from my common rotation. Stylistically they’re great in their class, and lyrically they’re wonderfully dark and witty. Dark and witty always go together, never apart, for The Smiths: “Girlfriend in a Coma” and “Unhappy Birthday” are exhibit A, but lyrics like these tucked away as well: “I still love you / Only slightly, only slightly less / Than I used to, my love.” This is the album by The Smiths I enjoyed most despite the prestige of God Save The Queen. Very strong 4/5. * Note: Seven albums for Morrissey total? Three by The Smiths and four solo? I doubt that is justified… but, I hope Modest Mouse made its way into the list.

I like The Smiths, so I like this album. Prefer the first half, and this isn’t top tier Smiths but still good. Better than Meat is Murder.

I enjoyed this a lot, i think if i was a bit more of a lyrics girly i’d have enjoyed it even more but 100% something i wanna listen to again i liked the parts that evoked the circus.

my mum’s favourite Smiths album, and she was definitely giving it 5 stars while listening. I didn’t know any of these except for Stop Me… (maybe my fave Smiths song), but the real revelation was those dramatic string bits in Girlfriend in a Coma. I liked the expansive and more mature sound here even if the songs didn’t necessarily speak to me

This is the Smiths album I’m least familiar with, maybe because it features none of their super famous (to my mind) hits, but it’s pretty solid from start to finish. It sounds like a Smiths record and that’s a good thing. Johnny Marr and Morrissey were a great songwriting partnership, and I think their breakup has done them good. Leaves them with just enough goodwill and mystique to enjoy the smiths and ignore whatever it is Morrissey has become.

Not my favorite Smiths album, but still strong.

Obligatory "Fuck Morrissey" but I love The Smiths so yea I like this Best Song: Death of a Disco Dancer Rating: 7.5/10 Stars: 4

Probably the Smiths album I've listened to the least. I would've gone with their debut album over this one but this is by no means a bad record. I forgot how much I liked "A Rush and a Push and the land Is Ours". Another album I was happy to revisit even if it isn't my favorite. Favorite track: Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before 3.5/5

Addictive !

I liked most of these songs. Pretty mellow and easy.

I enjoyed all of this. Some of it quite a lot. Morrissey is a cunt though.

Love the Smiths though my knowledge of their catalog is limited. This one was new to me and didn't disappoint.

Not my favourite Smiths album, but it's got some great moments.

The Smiths NUNCA falla, gran gran banda.

I liked this a lot - pleasantly surprised. Playlist track: a rush and a push

a ver... es the smiths, no hace falta decir mucho más

Great album! I would have loved to see them live.

Favorite track(s): I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, Paint a Vulgar Picture Heard before Previous rating: 8/10

Not their best but really good.

brilliant

My man, Johnny Marr. Smiths>White Stripes.

Esta bueno, nunca lo habia escuchado

Different from their others, more soft-edged in production, and some of the songs more anthemic are almost Beatlesque (Last Night eg), so perhaps not classic Smiths, but a fine album.

A good album from one of the 1980s’ best. Probably strongest in the middle with Girlfriend in a Coma and Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, which are great examples of their perfecting of the ‘80s indie sound and creative lyricism. The band make an effort to evolve their sound (a somewhat odd priority given that they knew this was their last album, but there you go), and I’m not sure they fully pull it off. A good listen, but maybe not their best.

The Smiths' swan song sees them branching out musically, with strings and keyboards playing a more prominent role. It works well, not least because the record contains some of their strongest songs, although these are mostly front-loaded into the first half. 'I've Started Something I Couldn't Finish' and 'Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before' might well be the finest songs the band ever made. The second half is less strong, however, which is why I'm giving this a 4 rather than a 5.

A strong final outing from the Smiths, though I definitely still prefer ‘The Queen Is Dead’ overall. The production/arrangements are lusher and more varied than on their previous albums, with keyboards, synths and strings making frequent appearances. ‘A Rush and a Push…’ is a solid opener, but ‘I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish’ and ‘Stop Me…’ are the clear standouts for me, along with ‘Last Night…’ and ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’. As this suggests, the first half is quite a bit stronger than the second, but there’s still enough quality over the course of the album for 4 stars.

Espectaculares las letras

Not every song is a banger, but super solid record.

Good album but not close to the Smith's peak, 3.5 rounded up

Den her var fornøjelig.

Would be 5 if not for Morrissey

Mejor tema girlfriend in a coma 7/10

This is great, but Morrissey is such a terrible person these days, openly fascist, that I rarely think to listen to it. So this project was a good excuse to give it one more chance.

I came to the Smiths well after the party had wrapped up, so they don't have intense personal whathaveyou and etc for me. But they are really, really good, and their combination of pop craft and loopy idiosyncratic strangeness adds up to real artistry. At the same time, I pretty much only listen to them on curated lists because the great songs almost without exception sit beside the clunkers. They are truly consistently inconsistent. This album is obviously anchored by Girlfriend in a Coma, a great song. For me, the other two great songs here are Death At One's Elbow and Rush and a Push. (I love the way the song titles are usually either ridiculously short or cumbersomely long and unwieldy.) It seems that other listeners tend to value some of the other songs more. I think I listen to the Smiths through Johnny Marr and then secondarily whatever Morrissey is doing, and I suspect others tend to focus more heavily on Morrissey. That might account for the difference in assessing this album as well as others. What was cool here was hearing the Other Songs again and realizing that most of them are better than I had remembered. Odd, meandering, but finding their way. This is a better album than I had thought. (Thansk, 1001 Album Generator!) That said, Johnny Marr's heart often doesn't seem to be in it. (Which may have literally been the case; they broke up shortly after htis album came out, and I believe he initiated the breakup.) The music often sounds perfunctory, just filling in around whatever Morrissey is doing. And the sound / production is generally flat, even by their standards. On that note: The Smiths' recordings were dogged by inferior sound quality throughout their run. There is a box set, Complete Smiths, that addresses that problem effectively with remasters that are much more dynamic and alive sounding. Also, this is a band that recorded lots of singles and released many compilations -- the songs are scattered all over the place, often repeating, often in alternate versions. It is confusing and frustrating. On Complete, you get a song once and there it is. Much better way to go through the catalog.

I'll never publicly flog the Smiths. I listened to "Fear of Music" on one side of my TDK tape, and "How Soon Is Now" on the other, over and over in 1985. The Smiths were healing music for my tender heart. That said--this isn't their best effort.

This was an album that was very important to me in high school. My brother loved the Smiths and had already seen them on tour. I remember a lot of sitting in my room listening to their songs and wallowing in my depression. It was actually great for me to listen to right now again and not feel that way about it. I really loved Unhappy Birthday. I also have vivid memories of seeing them on tour at some point at Great woods. I even remember what I wore. I wish Morrissey hadn't turned out to be such a douche.

Somehow, this was the Smiths album I listened to the most, although it came kind of at the end of their popularity in my circle. It's unfortunate that Morrissey turned out to be such a shit, because I hate to give him any of my money nowadays, even the 1/12 of a cent or whatever he would get from my streaming a song of his. Back in the day he was also a shit, but a snide funny shit with a knack for acidic yet delicious phrasing. "Nothing's changed, I still love you, only slightly, only slightly less than I used to, my love." Woof. I haven't listened to this record in 30 years, I would guess. When listening to the first cut yesterday, I found the words a bit chilling. Now that Morrissey is out bitterly ripping on immigrants, Muslims, Chinese people, etc., should I really sing along to this song, even if I somehow remember all the lyrics quite clearly?

Love that sound.

LOVED IT

Back in the day, I hated The Smiths for some stupid reasons I don't even remember anymore. And now that I can listen to this record and really see how great it is, it turns out that Morrissey is a fascist. The world conspires to break our hearts.

Album Review 097 Strangeways, Here We Come by The Smiths (1987) Rating: 4.5/5 Arguably the band’s best and most refined work, though listening to it today requires an effort the size of Morrisey’s ego in separating the art from the artist. It’s much easier to get through if you stop viewing Morrissey as a relatable outsider and start seeing him for what he is: a self-enamoured, narcissistic twat with an Oscar Wilde obsession. Whilst the album gives a fascinating character study in pettiness and bitterness, it also gives us the chance to appreciate the talent of Johnny Marr, who in his nature and sound is everything that Morrisey is not. His arrangements are deep and layered and move far beyond 80’s Manchester indie into something much more grand. It’s a brilliant musical goodbye from one of the UK’s most important bands of the 80’s, and you can appreciate the genius of the composition while acknowledging the singer is a dick. Oh, and the other two in the band do ok too.

For Morrisey being one of the most insufferable vocalists I've ever heard, he's not too bad on this album. The growls he does on the first few tracks are pretty unique. Nothing crazy stands out behind any of the songs, but it's not to say Strangeways is a great pop record.

I really liked the sound on this album. I know its not a very long album but it breezed by, which may have been a detriment.

hey pretty fun rock! has a bit of a 50's vibe to it at times.

This was actually pretty enjoyable. Shoutout Perrier!

Not bad similar to Dream Weaver

Classic Smiths

I liked it but it’s generally not my favorite genre

hate morrissey but god he knows how to make music

There’s a surprising density here beneath the jangle. The layered guitars and dramatic arrangements give it a kind of quiet grandeur that I didn’t expect. It’s not technical in the way I usually gravitate toward, but the emotional weight and sense of structure feel very deliberate, almost like it’s building toward something bigger the whole time.

I was really ready to dislike this record, mostly because of what I know about Morissey. Unfortunately, I just can't do it. The opening track is fantastic, and the album as a whole just feels so far ahead of its time.
