Reviews (page 4 of 13)
Was alright, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the queen is dead, I give it a 3.5- so a 4 because when they’re good, they’re really good
Listening session: march 18th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: I’ve never listened to this particular album but it’s a classic case of separating the art from the artist because I really like The Smiths Favourite tracks: Death of a Disco Dancer, Last Night I Dreamed That Someone Loved Me & I Won’t Share You
Лучшая песня: Last Night I Dreamt Худшая: Death at one´s elbow Не худший альбом The Smiths
The run from I Started Something… to Unhappy Birthday is maybe the best stretch found on any Smiths album, but the remaining 4 tracks are probably some of my least played in their entire catalogue. The highs are certainly high, but the lows are mediocre at best, at least in comparison to the rest of their work.
Don't think I enjoyed this as much as the other smiths albums we've had, but still very good. Highlights: I started something I couldn't finish Girlfriend in a coma Stop me if you think you've heard this one before Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me Not quite enough for a 5. 4.5
sounds like the smiths!
Like this album quite a bit. Some of my favorite Smiths songs are here.
nooooo I don't want to like The Smiths. But this album is tight and very listenable while staying interesting.
En av mine favoritt-Smiths. Min absolutte favorittlåt er på denne plata, Stop me if you think youve heard this one before.
I understand that people do not like Morrissey as a person, but his musical talents can't be ignored. This is a great band & I've been listening to this album all day. I know they're new wave, but they're also shoegaze, right? Maybe not. Either way, I like it.
As close to a 5 as you can get without getting one. A few songs towards the end are a bit weaker but the run of first 6 are excellent. Girlfriend in a Coma was always my favourite The Smiths song when I was younger.
Woulda been a 5 if it ended at unhappy birthday
More of a 3.5 really Least favourite of the smiths albums
You know, His lyrics make it obvious of his unwokery. Get over it. He didnt kill anyone. Despite his many mentions of it. *worried look* Great album. Does lag a little at the end mind
Decent. Can’t go wrong with the smiths
Given their universal acclaim I'm embarrassed to say this is the first Smith's album I've listened to go to woah (singles compilations notwithstanding). Shocker - it's really good. Remarkably ahead of the game for an album released in '87, a lot of it sounds like it could be released today. Smiths, Pixies and REM really were the Ur Indie bands of the late 80s hey. This didn't hit me as a masterpiece of a album, but a collection of very good to very very good songs. Bring on the next one, I'm sure there are more on here.
Being a big fan of Depeche Mode, I'm not sure how I've never heard of The Smiths. It's a more acoustic vibe, but they're very similar styles otherwise. Looking forward to their other albums on this list
I have this album and do go back to it a lot.
love the smith’s but this one has some forgettable songs and some faves!
Really liked the album, I am not familiar with much smiths music but enjoyed it
Another impressive Smiths album. I remember I'd never heard much of them until Perks of Being a Wallflower and thought they seemed pretentious... Once I got over that I've enjoyed pretty much all of their music.
not bad
Yes, Morrissey is a miserable twat with questionable politics, but Johnny Marr is an amazingly influential guitarist and this is a fine collection of songs. A shame they couldn’t make the magic last longer, but there you go. 4/5
Good Album! Not my favorites from the Smiths, but unmistakably them in terms of lyricism and melody. Very Smiths-esque. My favorite is still I Won't Share You- haunting last song from the band, isn't it?
Great instrumental and good vibes overall. Morissey just pisses me off sometimes.
I've owned this album for more than twenty years and never gave it a real listen. While Morrissey's vocals aren't my favorite thing, I also don't hate them. I really dig the instrumentation here. Girlfriend in a Coma and Death of a Disco Dancer are the standouts for me but the album as a whole is great.
I don’t know why but I couldn’t quite understand The Smiths when I was in high school. I was recommended the self titled and The Queen Is Dead for years, but never thought much besides a few notable tracks. Perhaps their slow, melancholic mood put me off at ironically a time I would have appreciated it. Good thing I still feel these things because for the first time ever, I completely understand a Smiths record on first listen. Unexpectedly, it’s from their last and least-known record released after the band’s breakup. It seems that just about every Smiths release in their tenure is recognized strongly besides Strangeways. From my perception, it was one last footnote on the band’s career that most fans disregard. Yet it’s on this list and that has to mean that it has some firepower. Indeed, it’s no Mardi Gras or Squeeze. Strangeways starts off strong and ends strong with signs of growth within the band’s trademark sound. This is still a Smiths record, but now it’s in a different color/flavor. The songs are still catchy with desperation and yearning yet I felt like it wasn’t too familiar. That was refreshing to hear from The Smiths. I never thought the key to getting the Smiths was going to be from this record because if this is the “worst” they got, then the rest should make more sense now. Morrissey still sucks though (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)
Alr listened. Next better be something new
This was great "long walk at the mall" music. Plus, it had the added bonus of having "Girlfriend In A Coma" which, of course became the best song ever when recorded by Mojo Nixon (RIP).
Love the Smiths. Very 80s, very smooth.
So this is who the Smiths are, I had heard of them, but wasn't sure if I ever "Heard" them.
I've always thought this is their weakest, but it's really a very capable collection of songs, albeit missing the highest highs of their other studio albums Hatful of Hollow erasure unacceptable on the list btw
I actually enjoyed this. I wouldn’t usally sit and listen to an album by the Smiths but I really liked this one!
It's the Smiths so it's great but this album certainly has less bangers than something like meat is Murder or The Queen is Dead so it's not quite 5 star territory
The Queen is Dead is the second album that I bought with my own money back in the 80s. Obviously I listened to it to death (on a double decker bus lol) back then, and I recall not liking Strangeways when it came out. I'm pleasantly surprised and loathe to admit that this album is better than The Queen is Dead. More variation in songwriting / structure / tonality. It's unfortunate that Morrisey grew up to be a nazi tosser.
I was surprised to see this one on the list. Bought the cassette when it came out, but never quite liked it as much as the previous album The Queen Is Dead. Revisiting it this many years later I was surprised how much I liked it with its expansion of instrumentation and songwriting. A great way for the band to go out. Morrissey’s self loathing, mopey and at times cheeky singing is on full display, which gets tiresome as usual. But the rest of the band are really firing on all cylinders, especially Johnny Marr who is just a badass.
muy muy bien, a needed album
Girlfriend in a coma is probably my favorite smiths song and the rest of the album was not disappointing
Really happy the growling stops after the first two songs. Decent 80s emo shit.
i believe i've listened to this one before, but it didn't leave a big mark on me. hearing it again there's a lot to like. the baseline for the album is pretty cool and fun to listen to (there's not *really* any standout skips), but i think it's missing some absolute bangers to really bring it together. the opener is great, and Death of a Disco Dancer is very dope. soft 4
Pues muy bien
Despite everything I still really fuck with The Smiths
Slay
sure, that's fun. a bit staid for my tastes, but it's well arranged, varied in composition, and with some compelling vocal work.
Morrisy
so cool so sad so twinkle
pretty good
Du lourd
Fav tracks: I started something I couldn’t finish, death of a disco dancer, paint a vulgar picture Unfortunately this is a beautiful album. Every song is full of whimsy and melancholy
Lovely album, at the end of their time, not to play any of these live as The Smiths, I just read Mike Joyce’s’ book “The Drums”, he said this is his favourite album.
Always love a smiths album! This one is not the absolute best, but still solid.
This is the Smiths I’ve been waiting for. After listening to a few record I didn’t get the hype and Morrissey’s voice was more annoying than anything else. This album was different. Loved his voice, loved the more mellower songs and loved Jonny Marr of the string as per
Somehow the first Smiths album in almost 700 days. It's good, not that great but good. It doesn't really have any of my favorite Smiths songs on it but it's an overall good album nonetheless. It's just the Smiths but more of it, really. Unhappy birthday is a fun song.
Fuck Morrissey. BUT.... I can't figure out why everyone is always salivating over The Queen is Dead when this feels better to me in every conceivable way? I found myself wishing they did more long, atmospheric stuff like Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. It took two listens but this grew on me a lot. I felt like they had their own distinct sound for the first time.
interesting in a good way
I have somehow, perhaps consciously, perhaps not, avoided listening to The Smiths my entire life. Not one song, to my knowledge, has vibrated my eardrums across my many years of music exploration. I think I read about how much of a prick Morrissey is at one point and just kind of avoided them. Well, that ended today. I enjoyed the album, probably more than I was expecting to. I can see the influence they had on many of the artists I enjoy, like Belle and Sebastian, The Decemberists, and others. Twee, wordy indie rock with a splash of edge. It's not my favorite genre, but I can dig it for sure. I definitely found the instrumentals more compelling than the lyrics, which tend towards high school poetry notebook territory (Girlfriend in a coma? Unhappy birthday?). The songs themselves are really satisfying and there are plenty of interesting, unexpected passages that experiment with the sound and form. I expect there are more Smiths albums to be had on this list, so I will see how this stacks up. It's gonna be a 4/5 from me
I really enjoyed this!
I kinda liked this. I just wish it had less Morrissey.
One of my faves
Not my taste but enjoyed it!
I really liked this album although I have to say I think this is probably my least favorite album from the smith so far but it's really good. I Absolutely loved "last night I dreamed that somebody loved me" and I will listen to it on repeat for the next week for sure !
Really enjoyed this one. Johnny Marr’s guitar work is brilliant throughout – jangly, inventive, and somehow both bright and melancholy at the same time. The lyrics are sharp, funny, and cutting in that very Smiths way, full of wit without feeling forced. A near-perfect send‑off musically… shame about Morrissey!
4 almost 5
Morrissey as acerbic as always, even if this isn’t their best
Good album! I've never really listened to The Smiths, but there were multiple tracks where I really enjoyed the dark humor and 80s pop-rock vibes. I'll be revisiting Girlfriend in a Coma and at least a few other songs.
Morrissey still whiny af the queen is dead is probably a better album
Apparently im a sucker for the smiths. Morrisseys songwriting and vocals are great. Enjoy the sad boy vibes as always. Really like the production of this one as well. Stop me if you think youve heard this one before is iconic.
Just because he's a bit of a wanker doesn't stop this being great. Unhappy birthday is pure Morrissey it's brilliant. Such perfectly memorable lyrics and tunes across it. Gets 4.5, better than 'Queen is Dead' but for some reason I'm not rounding up.
Despite coming of age in the 80s The Smiths were only mildly on my radar. I knew the name but would be hard pressed to name a single track. I expected standard 80s fare, but there is a lot more breadth and depth to their music and their lyrics than that. It invites deeper listening and more attention than most 80s music. Good stuff here.
Day 160 Love it when you get a hot streak, some classics on here. Highlights A rush and a push…. I started something… Stop me….
01) A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours - 8,0 02) I Started Something I Couldn't Finish - 7,5 03) Death of a Disco Dancer - 7,0 04) Girlfriend in a Coma - 8,0 05) Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before - 9,0 06) Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me - 8,5 07) Unhappy Birthday - 7,5 08) Paint a Vulgar Picture - 7,0 09) Death at One's Elbow - 7,0 10) I Won't Share You - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,70 (77/100) Current ranking: 299/797
A Rush and a Push is actually one of my favorite Smiths songs so I was excited to see it started off the album. The rest was good, typical of the Smiths. The music itself is always great. I just wish the lyrics were less...hateful of women?
This feels warm and resigned, almost cathartic in how comfortable it is with itself. It sounds like a band that’s stopped fighting endings and instead decided to just do what they do best one last time. There’s a strange mix of nostalgia, peace, and bittersweet acceptance running through it, like an epilogue that doesn’t need to announce itself. The album feels smaller and quieter than I expected, but that restraint makes it hit harder, especially hearing it as my first full Smiths record. It didn’t overwhelm me in any special way, but still somehow gripped me from start to finish.
I enjoyed this album. Much more my kind of music.
Svakaleg stereótýpa hér á ferðinni, fíla Smiths en er illa við Morrissey, þrátt fyrir að hafa gefið honum sæmilegustu einkunnir hér í þessu verkefni. Ég toga þessa samt ekki upp í fimmu.
It’s a shame that Morrissey is such a cunt.
kinda unhinged but I love the smiths vibe fav: started something I couldn’t finish
very nice
Good album...just not my favorite Smiths Album.
Nearly their best
done
Really good. This project is making me question the assumptions I had about all kinds of bands as well as committing to playing full albums. New appreciation for these opportunities
Nostalgic
Morrissey can be a little too relatable unfortunately
i really only like mainstream smiths songs, so i’m surprised how much i liked this album. however, girlfriend in a coma is… definitely a song. stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before was so catchy though. so much wonderful guitar in this album too, especially in the second half. even though it’s hard for me to take morrissey seriously, this is a good album.
My third favorite Smiths album (after "The Queen is Dead" and "Louder Than Bombs"). It's the most produced, full-sounding, and diverse album of their catalog. Morrissey is his usual sad sack self but is offset by Marr and co.and some really good songs. I like the attempts to open up their sound more and sings like "Girlfiend in a Coma" and "Stop Me f You've Heard This One Before" are among their best.
Not a huge fan of the smiths, but I can acknowledge a well-produced album. I wouldn't say any of the songs were jaw-dropping! To be honest, when it comes to the 80s era, there are only a few synthesizers I can handle before I get bored and turn on something more modern el oh el. In all seriousness, tho the drums in Death of a Disco Dancer were pretty jaunty. I'm a sucker for consistency in a song, which was an added point. Morrissey just has to shut up real quick, tho. OKAY, now to give an unbiased opinion on this album. I honestly really liked it. So much so, I added Death of a Disco Dancer to my liked songs :) Girlfriend in a Coma was also a song that stood out. To be honest, you can tell that The Smiths is a British rock band. Not because of the obvious accent... but more so with the sound heh.. hehh heh heh.. British bands tend to have a different approach to creating music. As I said before, this album is jaunty for most of it, even though it starts off a little boring. I can confidently say that I like the jauntiness of this album. (know I'm being a little redundant el oh el) Anywho, I would give this album a solid 4/5; each song on the album brought something different, which was really refreshing. Although there was an obvious theme. I think I judged The Smiths a little too much in the past. FORGIVE ME
Good melodies, good team work, Convincing singer.
This isnt exactly for me but I did enjoy it and I don’t know how anyone could hate it
not really my genre :/
Great Smiths album that I don't listen to often enough. A lot of good tracks, more sculptural songcraft than their previous albums. Worthwhile listen.
the smiths suck. good record though
Like a cozy emo blanket ❤️
Fine album, not amazing
Not my favorite Smiths album, but there's a lot here to enjoy. Simple songs like "Girlfriend In A Coma" get surprise string sections, "Death of a Disco Dancer", which absolutely rules, has awesome drums and stabbing guitars. The album artwork is boring. Like it was designed to be forgotten. Definitely not the album I'd recommend to try and win over a new Smiths fan, but definitely a good album.
0/10 bekannt 7/10 Beste Songs: a Rush and a push and the land is ours, girlfriend in a coma, unhappy birthday
So great! The Smiths always hit.
Must have been quite good as it’s the first time I’ve listened to a Smiths album and wanted to hear it again.
Great way to ease back into the project. So many interesting sounds and quality vocals. All the hallmarks of The Smiths.
This is more smiths, and I like the smiths
yay! very good, familiar with the smiths, but i hadn't listened to this album yet. doing the thing! 4/5
8/10 yearning
The Smiths are just cool. I will never give less than 4 stars on a The Smiths album.
during my first listen I was doing heavy cleaning at home so was an easy 5 stars. now I see it was probably because it seemed more pleasant than what I was doing. still not bad though
Dear god, don't make me like The Smiths 3-4
3.5 - Good
very standard the smiths album, it’s nice. probably has my favorite song from their discography on it which bumps it up a bit
I'm already a huge fan of The Smiths but this is probably my least listened to album. My highlights were: Death of a Disco Dancer, Heard This One Before and Last Night I Dreamt. Great album of course but I think there are better smith albums. 4/5
I really, really, really enjoyed this one. Will definitely listen to this one again. Girlfriend in a coma is a song I could replay over and over again.
Wonderful record. I never find this back in the day. Coming in fresh, I can see why so many of my friends are fans.
A bit more lushly orchestrated than their other stuff. Shame that this is their final album because I think they were going in an interesting direction. As far as final albums, this is definitely one of the better ones.
One of my favorites
I knew Girlfriend in a Coma and I'm sure I've heard other songs on 1st Wave. Really liked the somber atmosphere
Many a time I blasted The Smiths, but more popular songs. I like it
Pop rock, great johnny marr Death of a disco dancer Girlfriend in a coma Last night i dreamt that somebody loved me
Nosar på 5 men sackar mot slutet
fun nostalgic vibe 3 songs i rlly enjoyed
Very much enjoyed
Pretty decent album by a pretty decent band.
𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦 functions as the final statement of The Smiths — a band already at its breaking point. I’ve never been a fan of Morrissey’s theatrical vocal style, but here it actually works: the exaggeration fits the emotional scale of the songs, and Johnny Marr’s compositions give the album a richness and confidence that frames his performance rather than exposing it. At the same time, the record can’t be separated from the band’s collapse. Morrissey wanted The Smiths to continue, but Marr — the band’s primary composer — left after its completion. Since then, Morrissey has repeatedly claimed he was “fired,” though the split ultimately came from Marr’s decision to walk away. In hindsight, the album feels like both a peak and an ending: Morrissey providing the words, Marr providing the music, and both reaching a point where they could no longer move in the same direction.
So I was surprised to like this album as much as I did. I’m not an 80s fan, nor do I have much love for Morissey. But here I can see the influences on Blur, Oasis, Superfurry Animals, even Radiohead. Yes, there was some 80s pop on here but there was one track in particular-Last Night I Dreampt Somebody Loved Me- that made it onto my favorites list. For that, I’m bumping this up to a 4.
I LOVE MORRISSEY

Bænger
Pretty good. 4 stars.
All four smiths records are great although this one i would rank 4th out of all of them .
Quite enjoyed this although does begin to fade towards the end. Favourites include, 'last night...' and 'I started something I coudn't finish'. Point off for the nasty lyrics in, 'girlfriend in a coma'.
Haven’t listened to much of the smiths before but I rate this! Banger after banger and feel like dancing to every song. Solid.
Wild to think that the 4 Smiths studio albums came out in less than a four year span! This album is a fitting end, with the band stretching the sonic palette of their jangly, catty yet sensitive pop rock - Complete with the typical Morrissey special; frankly dour lyrics regarding lack of love, death, illness, greed, etc. It does not top my personal list of Smith albums but there is a lot here - that theatrical, dramatic style that makes you wonder where they may have gone if they kept the group together.
my favorite album by The Smiths. Kinda poppy, but innovative. And a lot of songs about death. 4/5
I know a lot of people don't like Morissey, but he does make good music sometimes
For being the final Smith's album, Strangeways, Here We Come is still a delight. I can't claim to love the more sleek production style, but when you have brilliant songs, they will often shine through anyway. I love the way The Smiths are a soundtrack for sunny spring days, despite Morrissey's often dour and self-pitying lyrical content, and the instrumentation from Marr and co. are still top notch.
Excellent.
Morrissey is a twat. But I still love The Smiths.
Divertido y disfrutable.
The final one by the 80s indie-rock legends, that brought ringing melodis guitars and interesting lyrics back, when so many otter bands had taken the synth/electronica direction. Maybe not their best but still great, and ending it all at the top.
Girlfriend in a coma - Such fun, but I can't tell if it's fucked up lol Honestly- I just like the smiths so i was a real easy lay on this on. But, it was really a pleasant listen. This is prob the first album I would listen to on my own but its such a joy. I won't share you is very pretty
While not top tier The Smiths it's still very good. Last Night I Dreamt...is stunning (it's amazing how much the version without the intro loses due to no build up). Marr did the right thing splitting at this point.
Big fan of the Smiths, enjoyed this one
Jeg mener at Strangeways har noen av de sterkeste låtene Johnny Marr noensinne har komponert: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours, Death of a Disco Dancer, og Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me høres knapt ut som noe annet i discographien deres, har helt unike lydbilder, og noen av de mest geniale progressjonene siden the Beatles.
Crime je pense l’avoir mieux aimé que The Queen is Dead!
Not the best Smiths album to me, a bit less consistent compare to the others but still good.
Fun. I really liked this album and it went by really quick. These four guys can really write music. Morrissey’s vocals are pretty and there is never a dull moment. Maybe a little whiney (looking at you Unhappy Birthday) but whatever, it’s The Smiths, what are you going to do. Fuck Morrissey for everything else though. Standout tracks: A Rush and A Push and the Land Is Ours, Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, and Death at One’s Elbow.
Classic Smiths album
Loved the start and then it kind of lost me, but the second listen made me like it much more.
Great album. Not my favourite Smiths album but still great. I sometimes find Morrissey’s lyrics unsettling and he’s definitely a moaner, but Marr’s music is good (although I still like the older jingle-jangle guitar sound). Girlfriend in a Coma and Death of a Disco are obvious favourites, but I like Paint a Vulgar Picture too.
Ah the Smiths. Morissey and Jimmy Marr made some wonderful songs. Too bad they’ll never out out new music.
4/5
What a delight! It was nice to hear this version of the band beyond just the songs I had heard on this record. I’m not surprised this is the album the band itself is the most proud of. I loved this sound, and only a couple tracks were a slight miss for me. Best Track: Death of a Disco Dancer
I've never really been a fan of The Smiths, mostly because of Morrissey, but Johnny Marr absolutely cooked here. By far their best album in my opinion. 4 Stars.
best album so far
This was so weird... but I liked it.
This is essential Smiths. Fuck everyone who thinks this is their worst. Y'all just don't get it. This is probably their most depressing album, but with that little twist of dark humor to remind you you're listening to The Smiths. And the songs themselves are great too. A Rush and a Push is one of their most unique, I don't know if there is even any guitar on it but it atill manages to be one of their best songs. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish has one of the best choruses from any Smiths songs. Stop Me has such a gorgeous guitar part, I really love it. The album is maybe a bit toned down, not as punchy as some of their other albums, but that doesn't stop it from being one of their best.
I actually liked this album. It reminded me a little of early Bare Naked Ladies.
Overall nice.
Not there best but still good
3.5
Unbekannt, gefällt mir.
Despite getting into the Smiths in my teens I just knew their singles. I've only recently started listening to their albums. While this has lots to love including many of the songs I knew (Stop Me, Girlfriend, Last Night) I don't think it's their best. A little drags. Unhappy Birthday was hilarious though. Morrissey is obviously a prick but then there have been worse people on this list so far.
It's interesting that The Smiths consider this their best work, I'm not sure it's my favorite of theirs. The production is really interesting and I like their incorporation of new/different instruments compared to their earlier work, but I still think I prefer some of their earlier work. Still a great listen, 4/5
Pretty good, not as good as some of their other albums
I could write many love letters to the smiths and what they meant to me growing up. It's not their best record in my opinion, but one that's wonderful to listen to. The poetic nature of the lyrics, the muscality of the melodies and harmonies, the way the songs speak of tenderness, fragility and love - all of these make for a record that's worth every minute.
Unfortunately I love the smiths. They just be saying anything!
I like The Smith's, always have... This is their best album, imo. Dark, brooding and atmospheric. It's on my shelves. Morissey however, is still a twat! Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Pinnacle work★★★★☆ (8/10)
Pretty fun album, full of 80s pop-rock.
Wow, I really loved this. 4.5/5
Really loved this album. Had never heard a single Smiths song going in. Instrumentation and production are fantastic and create the vibe. Great vocal performance. Album is experimental but retains melody throughout. Little to no filler. Very fun listening.
Good
never familiarized myself much with the smiths but this was quite good
These guys are effortlessly talented. Everything they do is original, makes you feel things, sounds good, it's timeless. Fantastic album. 4.5/5
Would listen to again
This week has had 0 sunlight in the forecast, and this album helped me embrace it.
Great album
Knowing how close these songs were in time to the end of the band, it's easy now to hear hints of everyone's exhaustion. On the other hand, Morrissey's whole thing is that he perpetually sounds Over It, so I don't know how reliable an indicator that is. In any event, the production here is better than on The Queen Is Dead, which is both progress and an indictment; a lot of what makes the Smiths' early work so compelling for me is the rough-hewn nature of the recordings. That said, there's plenty of good stuff here.
The Smiths at their best. Great songwriting and production
old fav
78/100. Really good sounding. If this is considered their worst project by many, it only shows how high the standard was throughout their discography. A strong farewell.
I knew more of the songs than I thought I would. The intro to "...last night I dreamt that somebody loved me" made it an album listening experience for me. The first two songs made me think of Madness which was surprising. There is a lot of range here and sad that it was the end of the Smiths rather than the start of a new phase.
A great album with a distinct sense of humour, not sure it's my favourite Smiths album though. Strong 4
It’s remarkable that on this, The Smiths’ least popular album, 70% of the tracklist is absolutely 10/10 perfection. Marr and Morrissey finished things off with so much juice in the tank. God only knows where they would have gone next. Stop Me… In particular is a propulsive powerhouse, melodic pop genius with such an addictive circular structure. Girlfriend in a Coma is such a huge single that it’s easy to forget just how compelling and frankly odd the lyrics are. Marr has possibly never sounded so consistently good. The only thing that could improve things is if there was a big burst of energy at the end, like that in plentiful supply in the first half.
Thought this was going to be way more sad! I'm quite impressed
very much right on its way to 90s pop, but some cooler, cutting edgier stuff in there. An enjoyable listen.
I gotta be honest here, I’m heavily biased because I’m a Smiths fan. I love how much this band managed to do in such a short time. Not liking each other a whole lot made quit hard to get together. This record was the last time they did so before splitting up with no chance of a reunion. It may not their most defined album, it lacks some form of cohesion or narrative at times but sonically it feels like a step forward for the band. It’s a little rougher and wilder with freaky riffs and drums. Yet Morrissey manages to still keep it melancholic and a tad whiny. This has some of my favorite songs, tho I never really admired this album was a whole. It leaves some things to admire but it’s still really good final record, glad they decided to stop after this an end on a high note.
my first album i have listened to by the smiths, a band i have always heard lots about but had never gravitated towards voluntarily, but safe to say i really enjoyed this and look forward to discovering their other albums too. it also made me think back in reference to 500 Days of Summer. If you know you know.
Third Smiths album (of 3 on the list). My favorite of the 3
Man I hate Morrissey but here we are again. I hate to admit that I don’t hate this like I wanted to. I was waiting for that I told you so moment. Nothing. There are weak points, it’s not perfect but I would listen to another Smiths album without question. Choice cut: Girlfriend in a Coma
Love the Smiths. Strangeways not their best… assume there are earlier Smiths albums in this list?
After our brief stint in Morriseys solo stuff its good to be back. This album doesnt come close to the Queen is Dead or Hatoful of Hallow but the production is as always immaculate. 8/10
This is not quite the jingly jangly pop Smiths from earlier albums. This has a certain dark weight, a foreboding turn to the horizon, a grappling with fate. But it is still distinctly the Smiths with Morrissey's usual poetic lyrics and elevated delivery, and Marr's furious guitars and lush compositions. The haunting musical scope is felt especially in "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" and "Death of a Disco Dancer", especially its outro. Yet we still get shorter sing-a-longable songs like "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before". My least favorite track is "Unhappy Birthday", where Marr's instrumentation is great but Morrissey's lyrics almost sound like a parody of himself. In general, the second half of the album is weaker than the first. Sonically, I would say that this is Marr and The Smiths at their best, but Morrissey's lyrics aren't always his best-- an example of this is "Paint a Vulgar Picture" which kind of plods along for over 5 minutes. It's argued that this is the best Smiths album, that they finished their career with their best. While some songs are their best, the album start to finish was not as strong. It's certainly not as iconic or recognizable as The Queen Is Dead. It actually feels more like a transitory album, as if they stayed together it would mark a transition to darker soundscapes. But of course, this just marks the transition away from the band, a separation and unfolding.
Enjoying the Smiths albums. 4.
Better than expected!
Good balance between heartbreak and swagger, and smirking through tears. Morrissey’s melodrama is almost endearing, especially when he’s being an asshole on purpose. Messy, funny, oddly sweet. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours - Girlfriend in a Coma - Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before - I Won’t Share You
I’m not a big Morrissey fan. I need some more than I thought I would. It’s whiny, more melodic than expected if they enjoyed beyond the classics.
Очень серьезный шифт от The Queen Is Dead. Лучшая песня - Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.
I have three Morrissey albums in my library. I didn't realize he was in The Smiths before going solo. Will definitely add this album to my library.
Death of a Disco Dancer is maybe the first time I’ve really heard the seeds of Radiohead (who cite them as inspo). Supports my suspicions that the band was impeccable AND that Moz would be an insufferable hang.
Doesn’t consistently hit and Morrissey is a bell but they are still great.
I love The Smiths. Not my favorite though.
Johnny marr <3
This is a record from an incredibly controversial artist. Me personally, I'm more ambivalent towards it. It's pretty good, and it's honestly kinda calming, but also very downbeat. It resonates with me in a way few of the British pop albums do.
The Smiths. A few short years producing peerless records and a massive legacy. They have reached a musical maturity on this record, at the top of their game. Other records hold my favorite of their tracks, and so this one ranks for me at a strong four.
unfortunately this was really good, and relatable
Amazing album Classic
“I love The Smiths” “I’m sorry?” Stupid movie references aside, this isn’t their best work but it still is amazing. That goes without saying, however, that Morissey is an insufferable incel and so is his band’s fanbase.
Pretty good for the Smiths
Really good album, not a bad track on it. At the same time not enough outstanding songs to give it all 5 stars
Anos 80 puro, delicinha de ouvir
Love the Smiths
Morrissey is an absolute ass, but he does make good music. 4/5
My least favorite Smiths album. But still it’s The Smiths.
Strangeways, Here We Come is an album I really enjoy, even if it’s probably my least favorite in The Smiths’ catalog. The opening track, with its dramatic drum rolls and almost theatrical flair, makes for a strong start. And while I rank it below their other records, that says more about the strength of their discography—because even my “least favorite” Smiths album still towers above many of my favorites from other bands.
I really liked this! Have heard of The Smiths for ages, and now I've been exposed to it :)
I, like most people, do not like Morrissey, so I didn't think I would like it. I am surprised that I do. The lyrics are meh, and I skipped through a too-long track, but enjoyed it as background music. I almost hummed along.
If everst thou findest thyseft in the pissiest of moods; seek Jahnny Marr forget that Morry fellow.
Only The Smiths could make a jangly upbeat pop tune about a girlfriend being in a coma. Some Smiths classics on here (girlfriend, stop me, last night I dreamt somebody loved me, I started something I couldn’t finish). Not as good as The Queen Is Dead but still a very good album.
Their last album and for me their weakest. Girlfriend In a Coma and Unhappy Birthday are tongue in cheek but come across as parodies of themselves. In fact most tracks are fairly average (for them) until the last three which I still love and play regularly. 'Paint a Vulgar Picture' stands out. A damning view of fame, adoration, the media and music industry exploitation. And all set to Johnny Marr's magnificent guitar, from those opening riffs, brilliant rhythm backing to the magnificently short but uplifting solo which I never tire of and play loud on a regular basis! 'I Won't Share You' is a fitting full stop on their recorded output, a beautiful closer. I can't help thinking the opening track hints at Morrissey's political leanings though, sadly.
Not as consistent as The Queen Is Dead, but still a great Smiths album with a wonderful jangly guitar sound and solid vocals. Highlights are Girlfriend in a Coma, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, and Paint a Vulgar Picture.
Fantastic!
I’ll always love Smiths albums. The drama! Every song is like an episode of a soap opera. And musically it’s so strong and varied. The A side and “Last Night I Dreamt….” are fantastic. And tell me how long before the right one???? FOUR STARS
Ganske fint The Smiths album
Good but short
Toimittaa
I had never heard The Smiths before, but I will definitely be checking them out in the future. Really enjoyed this album. Can really feel that this is where Radiohead (among others) got some inspiration.
It's the worst of the studio releases, but I still just love Marr and Morrissey together. Really credit to everyone in that band who isn't named Steven Patrick Morrissey for sticking it out long enough to give us 4 great records.
Exciting I am into the smiths at the moment.
This is a great album but their earlier stuff is better.
Loved it would listen again
The first track DAMN I love it
Favorite: Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before Classic Smiths although not their best in my opinion. I don't know why Hatful of Hollow wasn't included instead, I think it has better songs.
What can I say, I never had a good impression on the smiths, but this one is better than the queen is dead
The Smiths are very good at playing on your feelings, that's the thing you can't take away from them. The album is a bit outshadowed by "Meat is murder" and "The Queen is dead", but there are fine songs, such as my favorite "I started something I couldn't finish". The pleasant, slightly melancholic sound goes back to the recent past, when I was 16, when such music was like a healing ointment. Recommend it if you liked other albums.
Don't like the sounds and attire of post-punk and expected to hate it. But nah, this was good. Songs are so melodic and adventorous. 3.5, but will rate it 4 just because I was biased in opposite direction beforehand
Chansons préférées : Girlfriend in a coma, Last night i dreamt that somebody loved me (bangerrr)
Lived it
5 reasons I dislike Morrissey: - That silly ‘oooo I’m a spooky Ghoul’ howl he occasionally does - That even more silly Cookie Monster voice he does - The fact he is capable of writing amazing lyrics but occasionally ruins some of Marr’s best work with nonsense like ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’ (or ‘Some Girls are Bigger Than Others’ etc etc) -His god awful political opinions -Just his overall personality. Thankfully not even Morrissey can stop this album being great.
Very weird album. I love most things about this, but the lyrics are just too weird for my liking. Not weird in subject matter necessarily, but how they present it. I liked the opening track, "A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours" as well as "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me." I could absolutely see myself ignoring the lyrics and having a good time listening, but some songs just get downgraded by the lyrics. "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" are the worst offenders. Overall, I liked it and am excited to get their other albums in the future.
1987's best album for me - a massive 4 star. So good and another strong addition to The Smiths' catalogue.
I liked it
Didn't hate it, it had some good moments but it didn't seem all that interesting.
REALLY good. didn’t expect to be a smiths guy but this was great
cortito, chulo, menos penas de lo esperado, puedo volver stop me, unhappy, death one,
Very good, worth another listen. Knew track 1 quite well and have always liked it
I love The Smiths. They often have such atmospheric and melodic instrumentals, and Morrissey's melancholic moaning voice appeals to me strongly. Other times they are upbeat, and with a brit pop esthetic, which is a lot of fun. Lyrically, very cynical and mopey, but it works so so well as a whole arrangement. Some very interesting and avant-garde style interludes. Excellent entry to The Smiths catalog.
Generally i liked the vibe of this album. I liked guitar in many songs and i enjoyed the voice of the main singer. I have to say i expected something much more sad, but it turned out not to be, which was a nice surprise. I didn't listen carefully to the text, so i have to go back to it someday, but from what I heard it was interesting. Especially i liked the first and the last track.
I just barely started the album, and I already like it. I got into a groove. There’s something about how 80s music makes me feel my feelings that is satisfying… almost like I’m in tune with the universe.
Bra album. Liker spesielt godt tekstene og måten historiene blir fortalt.
Fine
better than kenndick larma
god
Too bad Morrisey was such a tosser. Great band, great album but not as good as Queen is Dead.
I liked this one, jangly guitars, lots of melancholy, surprisingly bouncy bass lines (and very out front in the mix). Not going to add it to my normal mix, but I appreciate it.
My favorite Smiths album
8/10 This is almost as good as The Queen is Dead. Towards the end it loses a bit of excitement but the first half is banger after banger. Highlights: Girlfriend in a Coma A Rush and a Push Stop Me if You Think Youve Heard This One Before Last Night I Dreamt I Started Something..
*1987 - 4th and final studio album. *I really like The Smiths, and this was solid all around. *Only big song was Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before. *Girlfriend in a Coma and Unhappy Birthday are lyrically wild. RATING - 7.5/10
Tremendous stuff from Moz and the gang, in their final proper outing. In a way, it's a fitting farewell, finding Morrissey and Marr at the peak of their individual powers throughout (Morrissey's vocals on Last Night I Dreamt are genuinely awe-inspiring). And yet, it doesn't quite have the propulsion and sense of fun that they found on the Queen is Dead, keeping it from the hallowed five star mark.
Melancholic......closer to 4 than a 3
I actually quite liked this album. Some very novel sounds. Much different than the first Smiths album I listened to.
Pretty cool music low 4/5
There are no really bad albums from the Smiths. Music is good and easy to listen to. Thosbone is not their best but still awesome
Thoughts before listening: I really enjoy the Smiths although Morrissey's schtick can become a little tiresome. This album isn't one of the ones that I typically see listed as their best (The Smiths or The Queen is Dead usually gets that distinction), so its inclusion on this list is interesting. Review: Yeah okay...this is really good. The Smiths were only around for a short time, but they did put out a lot of good music. This album contains "Girlfriend in Coma" which is one of my favorites by the band, and I am also enjoying "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish", "Dead of a Disco Dancer", and "Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before". Overall its a catchy album although the second half does lag a bit. 4-stars
Musically Morrissey is an acquired taste. In general, not my cup of tea. For whatever reason I enjoyed him today and the music is quite good.
not the best smiths album, but it's got some great tunes. unsure why it's on this list but whatever i like it fine
Solid record from one of my faves. 4/5
fantastic instrumentalists but i just do not get morrissey. i really dont. theres something constantly off to me about his vocal style and the way that his vocals combine with the rest of the band. still a lot of cool creativity on here though
i am very undecided about the singer's growls in the first two songs, whether its goofy or cool. i think that is a general feeling about this album: 'girlfriend's in a coma' ???? particularly enjoyed the chord progressions in 'death of a disco dancer' and 'last night i dreamt that somebody loved me' 'stop me if you think you've heard this one before' goes super hard too
fun album, liked it a lot, minus point for morrissey
Some excellent tracks but not perfect. I think the Smiths have enough for one perfect quite long greatest hits but no more.
Great
I really like Johnny Marr's song writing and Andy Rourke's bass playing. I was never a fan of Morrissey but his unique vocal approach make any song recognizable as the Smiths.
I guess I'm a Smiths fan now? This was excellent. Only docking it a star because I didn't have time to finish it, so who knows how well it ends. Well, there you go, 1001 Albums. You broke me.
I just love love love this album. It harkens back to discos in West Germany and Leeds and youth. I thought he was just the coolest: "love, peace, and harmony...very nice but maybe in the next world." My opinion on Morrrisey has changed but I still love this album.
Me and my fellow teenaged siblings used to sing “unhappy birthday” to each other on our respective anniversary around the sun. So, I can’t help but harken back to on those days while listening to this gem by the Smiths.
I bet there will be some 1 stars or did not listens to this one, bc Morrissey has become pretty reprehensible. And I agree and I get that. But Johnny Marr wrote all of these songs first, with Morrissey then applying his somewhat cloying lyrics over the top. So I want to try to judge the album on its merits, and it's...another Smiths album. I really don't see much difference between this one and any of the others. The consistency is admirable, but with little to differentiate it, if you like one Smiths album, you like them all, and the opposite. Luckily, I like Smiths albums, so this one gets a 4.
Haven’t listened to a Smiths album before so I was surprised to hear a subtle reggae rhythm on the first track and how musically diverse this album is overall. Felt more like a compilation album highlighting their different musical styles. I enjoyed this.
Certainly not the best Smiths album out there, but still notable for its singles and for being a Smiths album. Truly at the time, their sound was fairly singular. They may be lumped in with other contemporaries like The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain, but no one quite sounds like The Smiths. From the oddly light melodies of "Girlfriend in a Coma" to the dreamlike pop sounds of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" this album delivers on a still evolving sound that could only have come from the unique partnership of Morrissey and Marr. A solid album through and though. Also, Morrisey is awful and may he never get what he wants this time.
I'm a sucker for The Smiths, even though Morrissey is a real piece.
I surprisingly liked this listen quite a bit. The three tracks I highlighted were damn solid and this took me to a time and place that I will never understand, but at least I could glimpse at. I did like the soft vocals and simple, but layered production of this record. First Smiths project I have ever covered and fairly solid. 7/10
I always quite disliked this album for some reason before this, although I don't think I ever actually heard it in full. Its definitely more 'produced' than any other Smiths albums, which I think in some cases really adds to the quality and also takes away in some places. Obviously drums guitar and bass are amazing, I think they are maybe some of the most unique/talented players of this era. I feel like some of the vocal bits are a bit cringe, and also I think he maybe ran out of lyrical ideas, but still very good, not a good guy though. Favourite songs: I started something I couldn't finish, death of a Disco Dancer, Girlfriend in a coma, stop me if you think you've heard this one before, unhappy Birthday, paint a vulgar picture, I won't share you. Overall around 7/10
7/10
Pretty good, but not my favorite Smiths album. The musicians are very talented, Johnny Marr's riffs are iconic, and Andy Rourke's basslines are truly underrated. There are some classic Morrissey lyrics on this one, especially in "Paint a Vulgar Picture." fav tracks: "A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours", "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish", "Girlfriend in a Coma", "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" 4/5
