Reviews (page 10 of 14)
I like many of the songs, but there's just something half-baked, half-stiff, half-done, and half-and-half about most of this (and most Jack White projects in general). Like a half-pale impression abandoned mid-way.
If Meg White were named Mark White, no one would be pissy about the drumming. Some great songs, but they get repetitive after a while.
I rate this album 6/10 not really a rock fan but it’s a good classic album tho. My favorite track on the album is Little Acorns because I like the story of how Miss Janet was going through a lot in life and how she saw the squirrel’s self determination to survive for the winter. If the squirrel can over come this winter so can Miss Janet.
Good songs, good sound. It sounds like a Movie Music even if you ever heard in a Movie. Could have a better order but, anyways, great ambum
It’s just a pretty average rock album
Enjoyed the album but didn’t join me or change my life. Felt a bit repetitive at times.
me gusta la variedad de sonidos. Solido álbum
It's not bad.
One massive hit to start and then some interesting tunes. Two more albums on this list seems excessive 'tho.
7/10, I do like it and may even save a few songs.
With Seven Nation Army as the first track, this album has a very strong opening - that riff is a classic. (US fans singing it all the World Cup in 2026)
I don't have enough fun with this band to lift them high in my mind, it feels like I ordered a meal at a popular restaurant and am disappointed by a very normal experience, not bad though
Yeah pretty good this
Garage rock and blues rock built from ferocious guitar riffs, pounding drums, raw production, and urgent vocals feels like watching someone kick open every door in a house just to prove they can—messy, energetic, and frequently exhilarating. The album thrives on simplicity, turning a minimal setup into something far larger than its components should allow. Best of all: It starts with the iconic song "Seven Nation Army". Unfortunately it doesn't keep the promise of genius it starts with
Riddled with hits, maybe not my jam currently. I really love Seven Nation Army, There’s no Home for You Here and the start of Little Acorn really made me laugh. One thing that pleased me was this “back-to-basics” approach they quote for this album. I think anytime an artists gets to return to form will be a good time.
Straight back to high school. There is a ton of singles but nothing touches the behemoth seven nation army.
Dwarfed by their signature track, this album retains the blues, garage rock aspect with some country elements. I’m not to keen on the Bacharach & David cover, but it may have helped them go overground as the early/mid 2000s alternative rock darlings. Jack white is one heck of a talent.
Yeah nice
Well, I hear 7 nation army at virtually every school concert I go to these days, so it was nice to be reminded that it is actually a good song 🤣 the rest didn't do much for me though, won't be making it onto my regular playlist.
I recognize the talent here and can understand why they’re well loved, but The White Stripes just aren’t for me. 3rd album of theirs, and only one of them I’ve really enjoyed.
Cooool
I really dislike Jack White's voice when singing, but the album is well put together musically. There are some interesting compositions on this album. Lyrically also the album just isn't very strong in my opinion. A mixed bag, so a mixed rating for this one. 3/5
Pretty adventurous but consistent. The wild instrumentals fit very cleanly. Highlights: "Seven Nation Army", "There's No Home For You Here", "You've Got Her In Your Pocket"
Emo rokkia.
6.5/10 - I think it’s easy for Garage Rock to fall prey to the same pitfalls that thrash metal does in terms of album pacing. It’s all go, go, go but the brain starts to check out a bit after a while.
I like garage rock but only in moderation. There are some amazing songs on here but by the end I'm kind of over it as it starts to sound samesy. Light 7/10
Stripped back hook heavy anthemic
7 Nation Army sets an expectation that cannot be met elsewhere, except for flashes here and there. I like the lazy 12 bar blues of Ball and Biscuit. The stripped back production is effective.
Given its reputation I was expecting more from Elephant. The singles are very effective - rough and bolshy garage rock with broad appeal. The Hardest Button to Button has a simple but gnarly hook at the centre of it which is perfectly exploited. However the basic, stripped back songwriting does not translate as well to the folkier numbers. I am a huge fan of folk rock, and even whimsical twee folk, but I did not find much enjoyment in any of these cuter songs. When they then switched back to the simple and bold rock songs it began to sound a bit one note. A songwriting approach this straightforward would probably lend itself better to a half hour LP.
Elephant gets a high 3 from me, the first 3 tracks and Hardest Button hit hard and this is how i like the band. The folksier numbers and the goofy bits are not for me in this context and that’s about half the runtime here.
Sparse. And very hit and miss.
Best of Album: - Seven Nation Army - The Hardest Button to Button
Another one that’s unfortunately just okay!
Hardest button, seven nation army = great Hypnotize reminds me of the Violent Femmes 3.5 rating
Obviously had one of the most iconic songs of the past 20 years and that song is great. I liked the album, it just wasn't a whole album to me.
Somewhat above-average blues rock enlivened by Jack White's oddball personality.
This should be right in my wheel house…but… …beyond 7NA I just can’t warm to this album at all 😕
A classic that holds up
A few tracks from the start were quite cacthy! But didn’t catch much of my attention towards the end of the album. Moderate I would say…
Solid mid 2000s rock
Incredible start with seven nation army , but the rest of it don’t get me as amped up as I thought it would. To me the other songs didn’t work as well as the first, still a good album
Great opening track, after that not really my thing.
3.5
Seven Nation Army is an insane opener. The rest of this album is a massive step down from that.
Battlefield 1 ahh first song but so good. Rest of album is okay i particularly like cold cold night and you've got her in your pocket.
Gave this a few listens to really make up my mind, and although in the moment I'm consistently rocking out and having a good time, by the end I feel like it fails to make a huge impression on me overall. I really want to like it and am tempted by the 4-star, but it's not quite there yet! Standouts: Seven Nation Army • Black Math • There's No Home For You Here • Ball And Biscuit • In The Cold, Cold Night
Had higher hopes
I said my dick is small And my balls are too small too They said my penis could not get hard at all Unless I looked at a man Ps. Never realised Meg White actually IS shit at drumming
Ehhh
Seven Nation Army was great but the rest of the album didn't grab me.
It's fine. 7 nation army carries. I can see why people like it though.3
Niet mijn go to genre maar wel leuk
What do you say when you have nothing to say? Considering this is an optional field, I can technically say nothing and allow my brain to fall further into the rotten stagnation that I am presently encumbered with. Can one become enCucumbered? To perhaps possess a cucumber that is of no use to you. The thought of wasting it creates a surprisingly heavy dread, and the use of said cucumber feels impossible considering taste and present ambitions. What is a casual online music reviewer to do? Lie, and call himself a music reviewer? Do I ever have any answers to my rhetorical questions? Well these shall remain no different. Put down that cucumber, you jackass, and listen to this White Stripes record. The hits on Elephant are as leathery and tough as the titular pachyderm and are often sweet, even more often heavy, or a mixture of both (The Hardest Button to Button, Hypnotize, In The Cold, Cold Night). The few misses on the record are still pretty likeable. Elephant is just a really fun modern rock record chock full of creativity, that doesn't skimp on the you know, rock part. 3.5 GENRE: Circus animal’s revenge.
No está mal
3,5/4
music that you hear in movie/50yr olds car
Album 189. Elephant (https://open.spotify.com/album/0rRNLpdA8nA8Sm8Fk490b9?si=8vo4b4sPQV21PgCl5njNUA) — The White Stripes (2003) aaaghh, not much better than their previous two albums. Seven Nation Army can't save the whole album. 3/5 Liked: — Seven Nation Army
We can’t really judge The White Stripes by how they are now, and have to deal with the record as it is. For that is a great rock album, solid rock ability vibes, amazing guitars, drums just meh, singing only okay. Seven nation army obviously kicks things to a high gear right at the start, but it’s hard to regain those heights. Ultimately good but not standout.
The largest land animal in the world.
3,4 Highlights: Seven Nation Army; In the Cold, Cold Night
It's a nice 2000s rock album, not quite my style of rock, but still a enjoyable listen, though nothing really stick to me.
7/10
Best Songs: Hardest Button to Button
Very good record. A 3,5
It makes sense how Seven Nation Army is the only thing that survived this album, but I don't think it merits being on this list. The White Stripes had a sound that I think people looking for a specific feeling would enjoy. 2.5 rounded up to a 3.
so many songsss liked some, didnt like some much, loved some
6.5/10
I know the hits of course, but this was my first complete listen. The simplicity is its strength, and Jack’s voice sometimes is akin to Robert Plant’s early voice. Never noticed that before. Good album overall. 3.7/5.0
Track #11 (“Hypnotize”) is missing from the album on the Spotify app so I had to listen to that one separately. This is the album with the hit “Seven Nation Army”. “Ball and Biscuit” is a bluesy rock number that has a George Thorogood vibe. The last track, based on “Creeque Alley” also was pretty good.
This is the canonical White Stripes album, when they really blew up on the Rock Countdown scene. Hard to believe it was 23 years ago. Anyway, I kinda think 1 White Stripes album would suffice for this list, but what can you do. I do appreciate their consistent color aesthetic. Also, every Jack solo song sounds a little bit the same (prosodically speaking). Good quote from J. White: "Our idea was to see how far we could go with an eight track recorder, and I think how far we went is too far." Highlight: 'Little Acorns' (love an inspirational squirrel, and the pronunciation [eɪkɚn])
rest of the album after the seven nation army song is kinda interesting
Probably White Stripes’ best. There’s already been two of their albums here. Hopefully, there won't be any more.
I do want to give this a higher rating because I liked so many of the songs in this album but the flops really flopped. Some of the songs in here are so forgettable and formulaic, and they added no value to the overall album.
I really thought I was going to like this with all Seven Nation Army and the masses of great reviews and basically no bad ones. Maybe I'm just missing something but disappointingly I really can't get behind it.
It was alright. I knew "Seven Nation Army" but that's about it. Not really my jam.
The White Stripes are at their best when they are playing that unapologetic rock and roll we hear on tracks like Seven Nation Army and Black Math. While their musical talents still show through on the slower tunes, those just don’t hit quite as well as the aggressive, in your face rock jams. This album had too few of the uptempo songs but was still a good listen.
Like tequila, wasabi or small children, The White Stripes are best enjoyed in small doses. This album features killer riffs on classic White Stripes jams: Ball and Biscuit and The Air Near My Fingers, but also many lesser tracks that lack focus and crave more cohesion. I love when one of these songs shows up in a mix or on the radio, but listening to Jack whallop through them here one after another while Meg tries to keep up becomes painful very quickly. Mr. White is a talented musician who writes imaginative lyrics, but like many other great ones, he’s too into his own thing and doesn’t trim down his indulgences all that well. So, while I certainly respect his work and love some of this music, it is best to treat it like your in-laws … only visit occasionally and don’t stay for too long.
I didn't mind it.
I remember it was right before my 13th birthday when this album came out. I walked in on one of my beast friends kissing my crush while Seven Nation Army. It was the first time I had heard this song, first time they had kissed each other, and the first time I felt true soul crushing betrayal and heart break. The fist half of this album (other than Black Math) just doesn't have the wierdo rock n roll vibe I had grown to love about the White Stripes. I probably would have enjoyed Seven Nation Army before the sad association but after all these years it feels so played out. The second half does rip very hard and ultimately saves it from mediocrity. I feel like this is the last good music they made aside from a couple singles later on (Blue Orchid, and Rag and Bone)
Okay.
The album's undeniable impact on the band is evident in the hits like "Seven Nation Army," which not only earned them two Grammy Awards but also became an anthem played in many football stadiums. Rolling Stone magazine included it on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
273/1089 starting strong with Seven Nation Army, i enjoyed this album a fair bit more than Get Behind Me Satan maybe their albums are the sort that i’d need a couple more listens before they properly click faves: Seven Nation Army, The Hardest Button To Button, There’s No Home For You Here 58/100
3/5
Like the straightforward rock songs and the bluest guitar. There is this slower songs left me wanting. It’s a good album. 3/5 Might listen again
Actually quite good
Nice mix of blues, alt rock and garage with their biggest hit 7NA. Don't know if making album for a big label made the pair a tad grumpier but this is well worth a listen.
Fav: Black Math 2nd: There's no home for you here 3rd: in the cold night Did not listen
Listening to it thinking Seven Nation Army must be the song I’ve heard the most without ever deliberately putting it on (except maybe some Xmas songs)
seven nation army sampled “hoy cerramos boliche” or was it the other way around?. Pretty iconic by the way.
I don't understand why some critics talk about Elephant as it is the greatest thing since sliced bread, because I don't think time has been super kind to The White Stripes and their blending of Garage Rock and Blues Rock. I think Jack White and Meg White together know how to make some killer Rock tunes if they really put their mind to it like with Seven Nation Army, Apple Blossom, or Fell In Love With a Girl, but once again I find their albums to be very hit or miss for myself. Elephant is definitely the best project I have heard from the band so far, but even then I wouldn't call it a defining piece of 2000s music. The only standouts on this entire album for myself were Seven Nation Army, I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself, and I Want To Be the Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart. I don't know what it is about The White Stripes but I am just not able to really connect with their sound despite enjoying all of their influences and their core genres when done right. It sucks because I grew up listening to The White Stripes, but it seems like the magic this group once had on me has now faded away into memory. Maybe you will like Elephant more than myself, but I honestly am starting to think The White Stripes are severely overrated in the grand scheme of things.
Classique ? Pas mal
I always thought of The White Stripes as a lesser version of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. That's not meant as a bad thing. I still think JSBX is a way cooler band but Jack White is kind of a better writer and an "old guard" of blues rock. I feel with this album they get further away from that comparison. They really expand their range and songwriting here.
Honestly a pretty good album. I liked how it shifted from one vibe to another back and forth. Really added to the mania of the whole thing. Favorite track was not in fact Seven Nation Army, I really fuck with Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine.
I enjoyed most of this. It's taken a very long time for the White Stripes to grow on me, but the radio singles from this album don't grate on me like they used to. 3.25/5
OK, voice is a bit grating
it was ok
Alright.
A couple songs I knew and enjoyed. A couple other songs that I hadn't heard before, but I thought were good. Several songs that reminded me of Jimi Hendrix - I acknowledge the artistry, but it's just not my thing.
Of course we all know Seven Nation Army. I don't think I've heard anything else by them, so I'm excited to listen. I know they're not brother and sister from the kid's book we have. Well now I'm a bit like huh, I don't like it too much. His voice changes so much throughout the album. I'm intrigued by them and their image, Meg White is very interesting to me.
Home of one of the best bass riffs of all time. One of the greatest drummers of all time, she doesn't get the props she deserves for how much of the energy of the white stripes is all her. Jack White has always rubbed me the wrong way, something is too try-hard about him, but even still, this is his most enjoyable piece of work by far IMO. He's too Beatles-inspired on his weakest songs, he's just not that guy to me... sorry.
Good listen, some smart choices in production considering Megs limits as a drummer. Excellent guitar and song writing, this will not challenge anyone nor will it stretch you out of a comfort zone.
Meh. Wasn't really my cup of tea. Wouldn't say its bad though.
1. Seven Nation Army - 4/5, a classic 2. Black Math - 4/5 3. There’s No Home For You Here - 5/5, never heard before wow it’s really good 4. I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself - 3/5 5. In The Cold, Cold Night - 2/5 6. I Wanna Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother’s Heart - 3/5 7. You’ve Got Her In Your Pocket - 3.5/5 8. Ball and Biscuit - 4/5 9. The Hardest Button to Button - 3/5 10. Little Acorns - 4/5 11. Hypnotise - 3.5/5 12. The Air Near My Fingers - 4/5 13. Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine - 3/5 14. It’s True That We Love One Another - 2/5 Overall: 3.4/5
Lowkey stripped.
gente q capa linda se for ruim vou chorar FAVS (top 3): seven nation army, i just dont know what to do with myself, the hardest button to button mençoes honrosas: theres no home for you here; in the cold, cold night; the air near my fingers; ball and biscuit; girl, you have no faith in medicine ah gente sinceramente nao curti mt naao, é ouvivel é dahorinha mas botei minhas expectativas la no alto :P achei meio repetitivo algumas tracks, nao tem muita inovaçao mesmo tendo bastante musicas legais nota final: 3/5
Definitely not an album that ought to be in a list of essential lessons. It’s fun and he’s got a lovely voice, but it’s no masterpiece.
Fun listen. Absolute slammer of an opening with Seven Nation Army.
Listening session: march 23th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: heard a few songs before Thoughts: I like the guitar work on this album and I can imagine how they were big in the garage scene of the 00s, but still I don’t see myself coming back to this album frequently in the future Favourite tracks: Seven Nation Army, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself & Black Math
Not the type of music I usually listen to but it's pretty good.
I was genuinely filled with a sense of dread when I saw I had to listen to another album by The White Stripes, after having the absolute displeasure of listening to their album "White Blood Cells". HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised when listening to this one. Still not the best, but a massive improvement from my first experience listening to them.
it's fine. definitely wants to be led zeppelin and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. but it's pleasant! Fav track: It's True That We Love One Another
I struggled a bit to rate this album, cause some of it is undeniable, (Seven nation army being a generational hit in my opinion) but it feels heavy and repetitive to me in its entirety. There are plenty of songs I love on there, but ultimately it feels too long and that is my understanding of that album ultimately. I also think there is a five stars here, but not in that shape
this album is like a painters palette. the colours are there, but they are just that - plain colours. there might be lots of colours on the palette, some of them also slightly mixed.. but the real art is on the canvas, not the palette. the sounds are all there, but it all sounds a little too plain and incomplete.
Okay I liked this, but honestly I had HIGH hopes and I am not sure if those were met. I honestly might like Jack White's solo work more. This isn't bad, but it doesn't really blow me away. Actual rating...3.5 Liked Songs: "Seven Nation Army" , "There's No Home For You Here" , "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" , "I Want to Be the Boy..." , "Ball and Biscuit" , "The Hardest Button to Button" , "The Air Near My Fingers"
Now, after 20+ years since the release, I think it’s time to say it’s actually a pretty mid one-dimensional album. Yeah, it was super popular when it came out, like a novelty do. Also, Seven Nation Army helped that popularity a lot, it rightfully deserved its place amongst iconic rock songs that will be remembered like forever. But other than that..yeah, what other than that? I don’t recall people going “Elephant? Oh yeah, that’s the one with that masterpiece I Want to Be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart“. I’m not gonna say it’s “Seven Nation Army + the rest”, that would be unfair, there’s 2 or 3 quite good ones, but overall the tracks are unremarkable and easily forgotten, even if they’re catchy and tap-inducing when you listen, an hour later you can’t remember most of them.
Just eh
ok
Asta chiar mi-o plăcut
idk not really my kind of music, too noisy, but i like listening to it sometimes
This was fine? There’s some great tracks
Having listened to this too much at the time of its release and then not at all for a long time I found this hard to reach a conclusion on. It ranges from genius to trivial constantly and the edge and novelty was largely achieved as it was set against contemporary music. Which is fair and unfair because all music's cultural significance is to an extent set against contemporary context. However, I'm leaning more towards the perspective that this was over hyped at the time and hasn't aged well, than this is an all time act of genius. I like some of Jack White's output since this a lot and in a way that helps to make it clearer that this isn't actually that great 2.75
Some classic dad rock. It has its time not my daily kind of listen
If you’ve heard one White Stripes album, you’ve heard them all. Pretty much what I expected. Unique approach, good riffs, etc.
Hahaha hade verkligen bara lyssnat på Steven nation army🫣 Ganska punkiga, visste inte det, najs En del lite för hårt för min smak Lite roliga också faktiskt In the cold, cold night - jättemycket min smak, gillar att det är så simpelt men så bra Mysig blandning av rock och akustiskt, tyckte om you've got her in your pocket mycket, men också ball and biscuit den var kul. 6/10
The best I've heard from Mr White et al.
I get why people could like this it, but it mostly just seems loud and repetitive.
feels very dated in its conception of what's cool, what's edgy, what's rock and roll. honestly totally fine with the material here, besides some scattershot annoyance at the degree to which Jack White is Doing A Voice, but any media landscape that sees this as new, exciting, essential feels very far away. very sturdy collection of songs that will hopefully continue to inspire 12-year-olds to dig into guitar music, good for the background otherwise
in my opinion, there was nothing special here, it wasn't gripping nor something bad
Guitar magic. Not my usual stuff, but remember first track cos of footy.
I've always understood why the White Stripes are popular but I've never understood why they are THAT popular. I understand a little bit better now. I appreciate the midwestern spirit of it all, but I also am happy to have gotten out of the midwest and that particular spirit. 3.5 stars.
It's a good sound and is interesting. Probably successful for a reason. It's more unique than I expect. Sure, toss it on the list. I don't know if you need multiple albums of these guys.
I don't mind the take on the blues. I liked In The Cold, Cold Night. When the bit about the Squirrel starts it ruined the listen for me, and then the album drops right off.
I've always kind of been 50/50 with TWS. There are some good songs on here, but others are a toss up.
Started off strong. Then I got kinda bored.
I guess I actually don't care about the white stripes that much
STANDOUTS: Seven Nation Army, Ball and Biscuit, The Hardest Button to Button Okay everybody and their mother has heard Seven Nation Army, and for good reason I think it's pretty easily the best song on the album, but the rest of the album is pretty solid (although I think I prefer White Blood Cells over this). And one more thing, if you think Meg White is a bad drummer, you know nothing about drumming. 7.5/10
This kind of bluesy rock has never really done it for me. There are some strong tracks on here and I love the guitar tones, but I never really got drawn in.
Turns out I've never listened to the original version of 7 Nation Army. It's alright
Meh... i think it wasn't the right timefor me to listen to it
Great guitar time, dynamics, and man I even like his voice. I thought I was headed to a four and then got a few songs in and found them unlistenable. Not a songwriter. A guitar player. I like the primal backbeat quite a bit. I think this is where they started taking themselves way too seriously and ended up less self aware of the gimmick.
6,8/10
Really disappointing. I wasn't expecting an incredible masterpiece, but really?? This is barely even acceptable. If not for the superb closing 6-track run (superb other than the last song which is kinda annoying) this would be like a 5.8. Even with that being said, please don't let anyone tell you this is anything other than a very inconsistent, kinda taxing, vaguely enjoyable album. It still gets a passing grade, don't get me wrong, but LAWD. First of all, Seven Nation Army is kind of a shit song. It's not powerful, it's not cool, it's annoying, it's only really good for 9-year-olds to scream and spit into microphones at School of Rock. It also gets immediately overtaken by Black Math, which is a much more frenzied and insane song that I like a lot better. That being said, the entire first half of the album is pretty bad. No Home is boring, Cold Cold Night is kind of fun if not unimpressive, Mother's Heart is just awful other than that awesome guitar solo, and Pocket is just kind of embarrassing. I ain't gonna hold you though, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself... is incredible. Love it. After that, opening up the second half, we have a song that I just cannot stand, and also that I kind of like, that being Ball and Biscuit. It's so annoyingly devoid of any genuine effort that I hate it, but it also has some pretty cool moments, so I like it. It did happen to be the song that made me start disliking the album. Too bad it's just the longest one here. Thankfully we get a 5-track run of incredible songs after that, just banger on banger. I love every song after Ball, except for the last song, which is kind of annoying. This album is a very irritating experience that just happens to have a few really great songs that keep it from totally sucking. It is a major deficit, however, to my ultimate opinion of The White Stripes as a band. Maybe I should listen to White Blood Cells instead, I have that in a logic somewhere. 6.6/10
It's a cool album.. not my cup of tea but I respect it ! Seven nation army is genius.
Some good songs and one epic song
Yeah good one. Don’t know what it is but the vocals sound amazing.
It's The White Stripes. It's good but not as heavy as the earlier records.
Familiar and a good listen
cool and punchy but felt really repetitive. first 3 tracks kinda blurred into one loud song to me. seven nation army is iconic, cold cold night was nice, and ball and biscuit is prolly may favorite with some fun instrumentals. has some good hits, but not really a standout album to me. not my favorite but I see why people like it
this would be a really fun album to try and learn on drums
Un peu déçu je pense que j’ai préféré l’autre album qu’on a eu
I think the album is a bit overrated, but it definitely is worth a listen. Classic for how much it’s talked about. Seven nation army definitely a stadium anthem classic… just not the best rock album to me.
Good album... Not really for me.
Honestly, other than the main ones, not that great: sort of surprised!
I liked this more than I thought! Still a bit boring at times but I wasn’t looking forward to this one and I was wrong. Didn’t all sound the same and had good rhythm.
Nothing special
Takes me back
Good Album definitely, one of the best first songs on an Album ever obviously. So iconic and bombastic, but having the peak at the beginning, affects the rest of the listening experience, especially on the first full listen. I many songs are an essential listen for garage rock connoisseurs, but the album has a great variety of hard and soft sounds, that compliment each other nicely.
I just don't get the wild infatuation with the White Stripes. There are some catchy riffs and a fuzzy indie-rock-blues thing going on but I am clearly just not cool enough to understand how this is anything remarkable. I like it well enough, I have this album, but don;t listen all that often is it's just not very exciting. Or is it just me? It is? Oh well...
08/02/2026 1. seven nation army - obviously know this one already. listening to muse yesterday is making me appreciate this more i think? both quiet and loud moments. i like this song, but it's literally inescapable and a bit overplayed so maybe that's affecting my enjoyment? *2. black math - liking the guitar at the start. bit gun club-y. not disliking his vocals in this one, which is a surprise considering how much i disliked the other white stripes albums i've had to listen to. *3. there's no home for you here - really loving the guitar again. got to about two mins in and not sure how to feel about the vocals. loving the distorted guitar though. *4. i just don't know what to do with myself - rethinking my hatred of the white stripes.... reallly loved this one. 5. in the cold, cold night - meg white vocals? liking the low hum... liking the keyboard? organ? not crazy about this one, but didn't hate it. 6. i want to be the boy... - his vocals are annoying me again. bit raspy and too whiny. liking the guitar and piano together. slide guitar has redeemed it for me :) 7. you've got her in your pocket - alright. the guitar is nice, but it's a bit boring in the middle of a harder rock album and all the things i don't like about the vocals stand out a lot more with only an acoustic guitar covering it. *8. ball and biscuit - back to rock. first verse lyrics are verrry highway 61. really loving the guitar solo. really great! 9. the hardest button to button - liking the intro.... kinda birthday party vibes?? his vocals are constantly towing the line between annoying and alright. guitar riff is veerrrry similar to here she comes now??? lyrics have been a bit meh throughout. 10. little acorns - spoken word opening? liking the start of this... guitars are great! vocals are officially grating again. 11. hypnotise - short and sweet. 12. the air near my fingers - immediately very brian jonestown massacre. alright but lacks something to push it into great? same with most of the songs on here. *13. girl, you have no faith in medicine - liking the guitar at the start.... i think the louder songs are where his vocals actually fit and help the song. 14. it's true that we love one another - what is happening right now? went into this reaaaalllly not expecting much (the two other white stripes albums this has made me listen to were abysmal) but i really liked a lot of the songs in this one :) still a bit too whiny 2000s rock at times, but enjoyed it a lot more than i though i would. something about it still doesn't have that thing to push it into great for me, will maybe relisten later? but just kinda meh/alright. still hoping for a better album tomorrow.
Seven Nation Army is obviously a classic but besides that one and few other riffs on the album, this is not such a huge masterpiece as people paint it. It'a a good album. Just good.
it’s so good when i only think about the instruments, then it turns into just fine when i consider everything else
I'd never heard anything beyond Seven Nation Army. It was fine.
Dragged on a bit, some great tracks that instantly transported me back to listening to this for the first time when I was a teenager. However, some of them were a bit meh and ultimately made it feel like a bit of a slog.
Great album, some forgotten favourites revisited.
They are from Detroit SNA heavy and distorted bassline played on guitar w/ octave pedal not bass Produced @ Toerag Studios E. London for £5k on analogue equipment built before 1963; recorded and mastered w/out computer Meg White "tick tock drumming style" Overall: Quite enjoyed it; like the squalliness and the feel the old tech and playing styles give the music but after the first 5 tracks or so I really fell off the album and it lost my attention. Fine as background but I wasn't blown away towards the end. Maybe other WS will do it for me? Or maybe on relistening?
A lot of power here, in Sprite of simple instrumentation. It takes a lot of directions though. Not sure I get it all the way.
Like it 3/5
Streit
Okay i guess
3.5/5⭐️
Music for kids
I didn’t care for it that much but then noticed myself listening to it in the background the whole weekend so I have to give it some credit
Pretty good. I wasn't captured by the album, but I enjoyed listening to it. I wish Meg sang more, as I enjoyed "In the Cold, Cold Night" a lot.
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Good - Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood when I listened but I found it didn't hit. I know it's their most popular album but for me The White Stripes made much better albums. the softer moments here I do quite enjoy though and The Hardest Button to Button slaps. On a good day it's probably a 3 so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
The album has some good songs bur De Stijl is the record to listen to all the way through. 3.5
I never listened to The White Stripes before doing this project; they are now a top band for me. First with White Blood Cells, and now Elephant, which is even better in my opinion. Elephant honestly goes hard as fuck, sheesh. As far as 2000s indie and garage rock goes, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Okay why is almost every song on here better than seven nation army. I don’t know if there is a great uniting theme to the album, but it’s really very good
Surprising amount of variety A lot of the first half just doesn't hit Second half is a significant improvement 6.6/10
Great vintage keys and sounds married to songs that don't do a lot for me. There are some winners here - I really dug the stretch from "In the Cold, Cold Night" to "Ball and Biscuit" - but a lot of the other songs just seem to sort of meander around for a while and then wander off. They're clearly a very talented group that has studied and absorbed a lot of older rock and integrated it into their own material...I just don't always enjoy what they do with it.
bayern scored a goal
Gute Unterhaltung.
Pretty good enough! Seven Nation Army has been listened to death, though.
*listened before the project* As I said, I don’t like them, but this one is direct and simple, so it is not that bad
Added to Liked songs: Seven Nation Army (already there, duh), In The Cold Cold Night, I Want to Be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart, The Air Near My Finders
I really thought I liked The White Stripes, turns out I really only like a couple of songs. But I’ll give them 3 because of those songs
The album is a vibe, if I would be painting, or sculpting it would be a nice background album.
Feeling pretty lukewarm on this one. Not really my thing, I respect the rawness though
The album just seemed to blur together. I like the first track.
I listened to this album as a kid but I don’t remember it that well. Obviously Jack White is a rockstar and this album is pure rock divinity. Seven Nation Army is an insane song. However, I’ve had issues connecting with traditional-sounding, pure rock albums like this, and I had the same problem with this one. 3.5 rounded down.
Couple of anthems. Love Jack white
An fun album with great songs in it. My favorite is Well It's True That We Love One Another 3/5
L'album du célèbre Seven Nation Army
ok, batido
3.5/5
Too inconsistent
Good Elephant.
I can see why people like it, i really fw the energy but it just felt too repetitive and basic tbh
I really respect Jack White as a musician AND this album started off so well that I was convinced it was going to be at least a 4, but it lost me somewhere along the way and I'm not sure why. Might check out some of The White Stripes' later stuff and see how that sits, but I wasn't blown away by this unfortunately. 3.25/5 Songs added to playlist: - Seven Nation Army - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
I like them better today than when this first came out.
The White Stripes are another one of those "greatest hits" bands where u combine their best songs from all their albums and they have one of the best great hits out there! But their album cuts are too unpredictable and inconsistent. I absolutely love how unique, ahead of their time, and creative they are though. No one sounded like them at the time.
One song does not make a classic alblum. But a very good song can and did raise it to an average 3 rating
Didn't realize that they didn't use any equipment past the 70s to capture this record. That is cool to me.
Still lukewarm on the White Stripes.
Elephant is solid. It didn't offer anything groundbreaking for me. I think learning about the band while listening to the album was of more interest to me. The band is a husband and wife duo posing as brother and sister, which led me to wonder how the iconic seven nation army bass line was performed if they have only two members, and I discovered that it is in fact not a bass at all but a guitar with a special effect that drops the pitch of Jack's guitar a full octave to make it sound like a bass.
Think there are some goodies on here like There’s No Home For You Here, In The Cold Cold Night, The Hardest Button ToButton, Little Acorns and It's True That We Love One Another. But wouldn't say this is my general vibe!
Fav track- I Want To Be The Boy To Warm You Least fav track- Seven Nation Army (idk man i think i’ve just heard it too many times) Fav lyric- “when my body’s turned to glue.” (paraphrasing) Overall rating- 7/10 Notes- I liked it, wasn’t too old-ish but also wasn’t super new. I like the song titles.
When the White Stripes hit, they hit hard. There are some great rock and blues tracks on here, but there are an equal number of stinkers. Standout Tracks: Black Math, Ball and Biscuit, Hardest Button to Button.
the last song pissed me off but otherwise a good album
Good in parts. The last track was very bizarre as part of the album, in my opinion.
Very good rock record. Seven Nation Army is a memorable classic for a reason. However, I was reminded of why I never really listened to this album much. It definitely tails off in the second half. All of my favorite White Stripes songs are elsewhere.
I've liked a couple songs before I've ever listened to this album. So I was hopeful that I would like the rest of the album. Unfortunately that really wasn't the case for me.
paaam pam pam pam pam paaaaaaaaaaaam paaaaaaaaaaaaaaam
Seven Nation Army
Mid highs + mid lows
I daresay White Blood Cells is a better album but this has got some decent tunes on it, even if they are a bit of an enigma group
was gonna give it a two if it wasnt for “Ball and Biscuit”
“esta merda é que é boa” a voz do vocalista é bue o damiano david 😭
Seven Nation Army is epic, no doubt about that. The rest of the album is refreshingly reduced and sometimes minimalistic. No sound of wall or overproduction. Clear and crisp.
3/5 - Some really cool songs, a lot I wasn't hugely interested in
bloated and boring
Interesting but a little strange. I like a few of the songs that were familiar or had a known structure, but one of them towards the end was basically just a conversation and that threw me off. I liked the vibe and sound overall, but probably won't listen again. 5/10
Recognized some
Seven Nation Army is iconic, the rest of the songs are fine - kind of blend in with each other in terms of sound. Little Acorns stands out a lot though with its news broadcast opening, along with the southern sing-songy atmosphere of the last song. Definitely a good one to end on.
3/5
First song is a classic. Rest didn’t really do it for me.
Need to review on PTO
A frustrating album that I owned but didn't grow to love, almost the hype worked against it - in terms of "what are you hearing that i'm not" or vice versa. There are incredible highs like 7 Nation Army and Hardest Button, Ball and Biscuit almost deserves its 7 minute blues length, but in the age of albums being too long (making the most of cd lengths) there is way too many songs and it sags badly in the middle after "You Don't Know" (which is a bit throwaway and annoying).
Innovative, deserves its plaudits, not for me. Best song: seven nation army
Meh. I dunno. I like the Stripes’ stuff when they’re more adventurous, like on Get Behind Me Satan and Icky Thump, and I have no love for the big hits from this album. Meg White’s drumming is probably my favorite aspect. Still 3 stars because they’re legendary and objectively this album was influential.
I can appreciate the album for what it is. It is definitely a masterpiece. It just isn’t my cup of tea. The White Stripes have always sounded unfinished or incomplete to me, which I know is part of their sound, but to me, it’s always been a bit unsatisfying. Still, there are masterful moments on this album that I do like. It’s just not something I would listen to on my own.
Oh man! It’s a shame pretty good album and when it rocks it’s good. There’s a few slow songs I don’t like. In the cold cold night is good but the other like 2 aren’t. Little acorns started off so stupid when it started rocking it was good. Also the album art is cool looking but where is the elephant? Funny story I heard was jack white was saving the seven nation army riff for a James Bond movie but he did eventually get to do the guitar on another way To die for probably one of the weakest bond film uh. Best song: seven nation army, ball and biscuit Worst song: it’s true that we love one another (so random out of place, and bad) and I just don’t know what to do with myself
another album with a song i know well and as 1st track 2 also has a familiar sound and fun 3 really enjoying the guitars 4 more emotional and unique vocals 5 very different vibe more mellow and new vocalist not my fav 6 once again deeper song less rocky 7 not a big fan of the drastic switch to sad songs due to lack of production depth 8 back to fun drums and beat more fun and upbeat again but they blend 11 spoken word to begin last track has very different uncohesive sound confusing spot of album not a closer
Not much to say other than its very British. Obviously recognize a few songs, and can see the appeal, but can't say I'll listen again.
i liked ball and biscuit not much else
Just don't know if I was in the mood for this one. A solid sound, but wore out its welcome on this listen.
Day 2: The White Stripes - Elephant 3/5 I like songs with one or more of the following: soul; witty or insightful lyrics; catchy hooks; a danceable beat; and an interesting groove. As you might expect, “Elephant” was not my jam. I couldn’t get past the incessant pounding. Favorite tracks: “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself” which at least has a melody and “In the Cold, Cold Evening” in which the pounding subsides a bit.
Thank goodness. Proper tunes.
Anthems
Okay. Some songs weren’t that interesting; a lot had riffs that sounded like ones from great songs of the past (I don’t know if that was on purpose or not).
Oh dear. I simply never understood the hype. That fucking Seven Nation Army shite was inescapable at the time. Back when I would spend many an hour and many a day in the Students Union, with MTV 2, Kerrang, or Scuzz blasting in the background, it was one of a foul spawn handful of the worst modern rock you could think of. Between it, that awful Evanescence son, that terrible Linkin Park song, and all of those shitty pop punk songs, you simply couldn't get away. True story, I saw these clowns at Glastonbury once but crowdsurfed to the front so that I could get away - I wanted to see Robert Plant and it was the fastest way out. Seven Nation Army has a, let's be honest, very dull riff, and that's all the song is. The riff played endlessly, while some boy wails over the top and some girl slaps a stick on the ground. I simply have never understood why people like it, never mind giving it such undue praise. There was so much better and more adventurous rock at the time than this Led Zep throwback rip off. But perhaps the album is better than that one song? After all, a band is almost never just one song (unless you're AC/DC), and I think Seven Nation Army is the only White Stripes song I've ever heard. Yes I saw them at Glastonbury, but I wasn't paying attention. Skip the opening song as there is no logical reason anyone needs to hear it again. Second song is cool, I could listen again. Third is fine... Fine to meh. Fourth...ah I remember this. This had a video with Kate Moss or some such prancing around a chair. I love the Dusty version, this less so. Fifth is bad - would still be dull if it was sung by someone who can sing. Meg, assuming it's her, cannot sing very well. Sixth is mid-album drivel. Seventh tries to be lovely but doesn't make it. The next is a 3.5 minute song, but for some reason they play it twice. The one after is better, but not great. The one after is barely a song, then a decent one, then another decent one. It's more of the same field until the last song, which is one of the most embarrassing messes I've ever heard. It's almost bad enough to drop my score by a star. In whole though, not as bad as I was dreading, but I remain mystified at the fame and praise this received then and now. I can only assume that, because the rock music being played on radio at the time was so poor that people somehow cling on to this. Or that people are very very silly, which seems more plausible.
Again some classic songs here, but too many gimmicks and detours for my liking.
I like me some good blues-infused hard rock. But this doesn't excite me. Good, but not great.
Legalzinho
Elephant delivers the raw, signature White Stripes sound with strong highlights like “Seven Nation Army.” Still, the album feels uneven and loses momentum at times. Solid, but not consistently compelling.
In the Cold, Cold Night er bare en dårligere versjon av She Brings the Rain. Og Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine er en Jon Spencer låt (jf. Tony).
Enjoyed the rock
rest of the album gets over shadowed by 7 nation army
Men kul!
Resten vettefasen.
Good album. Seven Nation Army is obviously a banger.
good! had something written out, but got wiped after refreshing. oops. but good. familiar with some of the songs here, but not inherently my 'go-to'.
Had some bangers, but seemed to switch to more folky and less catchy songs.
I found it pretty plain and uninteresting
Rock sympa, qqes sons à garder.
It's alright. I feel like the White Stripes are kind of overrated, but it's not unpleasant. If you were making a TV show and had a scene somewhere where rock music might be playing (like a record shop?), this is exactly the kind of generic rock that you'd choose to have play in the background as diegetic noise
I like this album but I hope there's at least one of the good White Stripes albums on the list.
Better than a lot of the 21st century stuff on the list.
Saved by...not against it
Couple of good ones
Stripped. Raw. Probably pretty crazy for the time but gets old quickly without bass or other production.
It's a good White Stripes album, but I think there are better ones, with better songs even. Overall, as a music album, I kinda expected a bit more (???). Idk, Seven Nation is a staple, but very overplayed, although I really like The Hardest Button to Button... I feel like it needed to be a bit more agressive, but I guess that's my persdonal taste shining through. If I listen to a Whie Stripes record again, unprompted, it will not be this one, for sure.
Even though it is the most played song of my life, seven nation army is still great. There is some good stuff here but some cheesy or try hardy things too
Album No. 0049 on my list. "Elephant" by The White Stripes is certainly one of the most important rock albums of the first half of the 2000s. I've listened to this album before, but it's been a few years since I've listened to it completely. You got your obvious iconic banger ("Seven Nation Army") and there are some other very good songs on this ("I just don't know what to to with myself", "The Hardest Button to Button"). I' conflicted about my overall rating however - I don't like the rest of the songs that much, and I feel this 2-person band doesn't really appeal to me that much, even though the album has this nice garage rock vibe and I like its energy. In essence, it's 3 stars for me - I was conflicted between 3 and 4, but my wife doesn't like The White Stripes, and she said I'd do her a favor if I gave just 3. So, 3/5 stars it is.
There‘s no Home for you here
A good album, but a step down from their previous albums. Seven Nation Army is the obvious hit here, but it's been so oversaturated in its use that I mostly associate it with football and other sporting events. The real stand-out is "The Hardest Button To Button", which is weird, catchy, and full of energy. There aren't any bad songs, though.
Fun for a while, then, it went meh
7 nation army makes me sweat with rage because of how often i had to play it in band i cant enjoy the song anymore, i liked the grittier songs sometimes the vocals sounded a bit too clean but i didnt mind, i didnt like the random acoustic song?? I felt like the album order was weird i hate when different styles are randomly interjected but the songs were quite good. Favourite: Black Math
good album
I burned holes in this CD as a teen. Jack has great tones. Certainly ushered in a new era of mainstream ‘authentic’ rock n roll.
Just not quite there
seven nation army dun dun dun dun dun d honestly not a fan of the rest of the album i am tired while listening but im just not interested 3/5
Heard the first couple of albums, but just the singles after that. Never liked them much, but this is good, I like the variety. Still doesn't do much for me. By the end it is annoying. 3 Heard before? Singles Owned: No: 21/1001, 21/84 (25%) Will I get? No
Seven Nation Army is iconic. The rest of the album is good.
The music is okay, what really caught my eye however are the music videos and visualizers, even though they are irrelevant when rating an album. It's an okay album, it's decent.
Great opening track. Other than that, kind of boring. A lot of the songs seem like they revolve around the title, and all the lyrics and music seem somewhat non-fitting for each other.
This wasn't terrible, but it was quite boring with a 2025 lens. I don't think this has aged well. I don't think Meg is a good drummer or singer, in fact Jack White isn't a good singer either. Weird about the brother sister thing too.
2 connues Pas mal
Seven Nation Army
Yo it's Seven Nation Army!....aaand a whole bunch of other unremarkable songs.
They came in hot with Seven Nation Army with the other songs tapering off slowly after that. Very unique and ahead of the times sounds throughout though. Very solid
1. Seven Nation Army - 11 What more can be said about this track that hasn't already been said? An all time classic. It's just a sound that is legendary. 2. Black Math - 8 Solid sound with some really good lyrics. They're drowned out a bit which is what I dislike about the track, but overally it's a great sound. 3. There's No Home For You Here - 5 It's incredibly inconsistent. There's parts the vocals are the highlight of the track as the instruments give away. There's other parts where the vocals are drowned out. On top of this, the lyrics are too repetitive. 4. I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - 4 Lyrically very weak. The drums are brilliant on this track but the vocals absolutely are tough to listen to. 5. In The Cold, Cold Night - 7 Decent slow track with great vocals on it. Solid reprise from the last two tracks. 6. I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart - 6 It's a good song. The problem that arises within it is the lyrics don't fit the pace and they are sped up to try and fit them within the chords. This throws the enjoyment of the song way off as it feels like it's constantly building before losing itself over and over again. 7. You've Got Her In Your Pocket - 5 His voice isn't great on this. Lyrically it's fine. Instrumentally it's one instrument, which is okay. But his vocals are really weak on this track. 8. Ball and Biscuit - 9 Lyrically way too repetitive but instrumentally absolutely brilliant. Great guitar solos and sound with a hugely enjoyable drumline to compliment. Awesome track. 9. The Hardest Button to Button - 6 Again way to lyrically repetitive, especially in the second half of the track. 10. Little Acorns - 2 Just an awful song. Terrible concept, terrible lyrics, terrible execution. 11. Hypnotize - 10 Awesome short track. Really what I've come to enjoy about The White Stripes. Superb sound. 12. The Air Near My Fingers - 6 It's okay. Nothing about this is going to blow you mind but it's also not unenjoyable. 13. Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine - 9 Brilliant track. Great sound, great fun lyrics, and an all around belter. Solid stuff. 14. It's True That We Love One Another - 4 It's a nice song but vocally it doesn't sound great and overall it's way out of place with the rest of the album. Could have been left off the album entirely. Average Rating: 6.57 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.29 Rounded Down: 3 Stars
