At Mister Kelly's

I have listened to Sarah Vaughan before, and I like her, but this one was just Ok.

I can say after many hours listening to Fitzgerald and Vaughan that I'm no great fan of vocal jazz. And so it goes here. Nothing wrong with anything, except it does very little for me. How High The Moon is a bit of a reach, here's me forgetting all the words and saying the first thing that comes into my head.

It's alright. Probably the least interesting early female vocal jazz we've had on the list. If I wanted something like this I'd probably just listen to Nina Simone or Aretha Franklin

I think I prefer jazz vocals that are a bit less showy or sink into the instrumentals more.

The audio quality and drop outs really took me out of the zone here that the live performance was desperate to conjure up.

This was an okay album. It didn’t seem that bad live since this came out in the 50s and people actually had to know how to sing then. Vaughan is a good singer and it shows on this album but this is a bit dated. Feels like a song grandparents would reminisce on. It’s rather short and listened to it twice but it’s hardly worth revisiting. 4.6/10

Was enjoying it to start, but the more I listened, the more it annoyed me

Again with live albums. I also prefer instrumental jazz to vocal jazz. Also prefer Billie Holiday and Nina Simone over Sarah Vaughan. Overall, it's just meh.

Big jazz fan, but very few vocal jazz albums grab me. Didn't love this one.

I found this difficult to listen to . Perhaps the way it was recorded but through my headphones it seems to shift from one ear to the other so much so I thought my headphones were broken.

I think this would have been lovely to have been in attendance at while knocking back a few drinks. Listening to it 70 years later is a bit tedious. 50s artists tended to be fairly one dimensional and this fits that bill. Talented musicians and a great voice with some bits of fun banter, but too long for me.

The first couple songs are great especially listening to in the background, the later songs aren't as interesting and I disliked the last track.

BL: never heard of Sarah Vaughan before - but saw she opened for Ella Fitzgerald so the expectations are high. Mr Kelly’s seems like one of those mythical venues smothered in history, I’d never heard of it before but to know it supported Ella Fitzgerald, Barbera Streisand, Woody Allen and Richard Pryor is quite some feat, especially for a venue with a capacity of 200 odd. So my hopes are high AL: the first thing that stuck out to me was how brilliant the recording and mastering is for a live album from ‘57 - obviously the actual PA set up was minimalistic due to the small venue size which reduces feedback but more live albums should be like this. As to the singing - she has an inflection style similar to the one Amy Winehouse would adopt many years later, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I personally find it a bit annoying and I don’t glue with it well. I can appreciate on a technical level she’s an amazing singer - unfortunately it’s just not for me, I wanted to like this album a lot though. 2/5

Decent jazz, evoking images of a smoky club venue, but as this was a live album it went on for soooo long that I was quite relieved when it finished.

No me gusta cuando dicen que el Jazz es aburrido, pues la mayoría del tiempo creo que lo hacen porque no quieren salir de su zona de confort, pero, esta vez, creo que decir aburrido es quedarse corto. Apenas es diferenciable una canción de otra y, fuera de, tal vez, la primer canción, no hay una sola que quiera volver a escuchar. Le doy 2 no por ser malo como tal, sino por ser extremadamente soso.

Vocal jazz isn't really my bag

Even though the album is fairly short, all tracks blend into one. Not too many standing out ones besides first few. I'm definitely not a jazz-head much... Still have to admit the production/quality of the album is stellar! Rating: 2.5 (Neutral) Wouldn't mind listening to this album in the background while sitting in a cafe. Best song: Willow Weep For Me (Some parts of this song reminded me of one of Bjork's songs. Beautiful piano work) Worst song: How High The Moon (High notes of the singer's voice were unpleasant to listen to).

The voice of Sarah Vaughan was a favorite of my mother. So I have a bit of a sweet spot for her. The sound is incredibly pleasant and makes you want to curl up on a New Orleans porch with a book and a tall cold glass of iced tea.

This is the most demur live show I've ever heard. It's a little unsettling. A black woman at a club in 1957 standing in front of an audience singing and in between songs addressing the audience with politeness and niceties. You can hear the whiteness in the golf claps from the audience. Sarah Vaughan has a great voice very similar to Ella Fitzgerald. The piano softly keying in the background and a measured delivery by Sarah V creates a really eerie experience... Beware of your surroundings when listening to this. For example if there's an older woman slowly stirring her tea with a metal spoon near you ... GET OUT!

Best Song: September in the Rain. Nicely melancholy, although could do without the recording industry intro. Worst Song: Stairway To The Stars. A prime example of the syrupy, over-indulgence that plagues a lot of this genre of music. Overall: She's got a nice voice, but I'm not sure it's so wonderful to havie the staying power necessary for me to want to listen to this today. Hearing her sing about Ella Fitzgerald just made me wonder why not listen to her instead?

A live album. Her voice is amazing but her jazz trio is recorded way too far back in the mix. I find ithe over loud vocals quite off-putting as I want to hear the backing melody. A shame really. 2

The announcer really did Sarah dirty by announcing at the stop she would be using lyric sheets. Otherwise all I’m hearing is Mya Rudolph doing scat improv here.

The cover is a mess, how is the music? Uninispired lounge music. Way to turn good songs into dreary slow meandering outings. She can sing to some degree, if rather limited in her conveyance of emotion. I suppose she is a product of her time. I just recomend that people compare her version of Just a Gigolo with that performed by Dave Lee Roth or Louis Prima.

She definitely has talent and there isn’t any denying, but jazz is just not my music. This album did not appeal to me in any way whatsoever and it was rather boring and something I had to get through.

First off - I love the uncut very live feel (obviously since it IS live) of this record, especially how it starts with a very understated talk to the audience then introduction. And the talent on this is tremendous. But. Man, I hate giving an obvious talent a low personal ranking - I really do. There's just no getting around my personal disinterest in old time vocal jazz. Which I can't entirely explain because I love old instrumental jazz combos - just adding in the vocals crushes any mystery or intrigue for me. Fully acknowledging Sarah Vaughan's talents, I can hear them, I can appreciate them, it's just not my thing. 5/10 2 stars

This was perfectly pleasant, as Friday evening wind-down after work, accompanied by a cocktail. An amazing quality of recording, Vaughan’s voice is beautiful, and everyone seems to be having a good time. Lots of jazz standards here, if that’s your thing. It’s not really mine, and this album hasn’t changed my mind. An interesting document, but not music I would put on again by choice.

I preferred he music over the vocals. Oh dear. Not exactly what you're supposed to think of Sarah Vaughan. There was something a little pushy, a little extrovert about the delivery. Which is probably the whole point of being a singer. Maybe it was just my mood. I wanted something mellow to start the morning. The piano and gentle bass achieved this. I quite enjoyed the live aspect of the album as well It adds to the occasion.

I'm not a big fan of live albums and this one didn't change my mind. I would have liked to hear the instruments more but they are background noise to Sarah's singing. Lot of the songs sounded very similar and I got easily bored before the 20 track album had ended.

Think count Basie spoiled me with jazz, not so impressed by this... She has a good voice though. Some of it sounds like it could be on a fallout soundtrack

The mood is set and underpinned by the vocals but it doesn't stray from safety.

It was okay, I’ve never been such a huge fan of jazz vocalists, with the exception of Billie Holiday.

Fallout music. It’s fine I guess, she’s a talented singer but not something I’d ever revisit.

It's a nice. charming live album. I just don't like vocal jazz that much.

I feel like I *should* enjoy this music more than I do. But it's just kind meh for me. I don't love the big band stuff, with the exception of the latin big bands. Her vocal are great but stylistically it doesn't grab me.

Listening to this kind of thing is like reading a classic book. I can hear the craft, I can see why people would enjoy it, but it's just not for me and I find it boring.

Y'know, I think there's only so much I can get out of this old-style jazz. I understand the importance and necessity of it as the groundwork for everything that comes after, but taken on its own it is just so much less interesting than 90% of stuff being made a few decades down the line. Maybe when I'm old the kids will be saying the same thing about modern music, but I can only judge what I enjoy here and now.

This is another one of these albums that you know is highly appreciated for good reasons, but it is not for me I am afraid.

She undoubtedly has lovely voice and I like her sense of humour and unflappability when she messed up her lines on Willow Weep for me. Also she gave a nice shout-out to her contemporary Ella Fitzgerald doing some scatting along the way. Her backing trio basically stays out of the way so the spotlight can shine on her which is fine. However, the material that she sings is pretty piss boring and not very cutting edge. 1957 was one of the greatest years in Jazz history and there was some really innovative jazz released that year, eg Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners, Miles - Round about Midnight, Cookin', and Walkin', Sonny Rollins - Way out West, Charles Mingus - The clown etc., I hope those albums appear on this list because I'd much rather listen to them than this middle of the road stuff.

It is a jazz album that is 72 minutes long. I struggle with jazz, mainly because I am not cool enough. Also the songs were not that good.

Honestly, putting aside that the genre isn't for me, I don't think she had a great voice. I appreciated the humor where she messed up one tune, but then she completely ad-libbed a second one after admitting she didn't know the lyrics, so I'm not sure what's up with that.

I was let down by the couple times she said she didn't know the words and then filled the space with scatting or talk-singing. Plus I didn't like how her lower range sounded.

Still not into jazz but I enjoyed her wit and the audience interaction. Really appreciate that it was “off the floor” and they kept the improvisations and mess ups in tact. Fave songs “September In The Rain” “Honeysuckle Rose”

Was I charmed by the old-timey crowd noise from intimate club setting and Sarah's ad-libbing on 'Willow Weep For Me'? Sure. Do I sometimes enjoy a bit of smooth jazz and pretend to be sophisticated? You betcha. Can I separate this album from all the other smooth jazz albums? And will I revisit it? Probably not, on both counts. My loss, I'm sure.

Live jazz from the 50s. I was pretty put off by her forgetting the lyrics all the time - the MC's intro says its being recorded and she'll use a lyric sheet, and yet... numerous times she forgot. Bit weird and unprofessional at any gig, let alone one being recorded that the singer would not know the songs?? Anyway the actual music was fine, she has a nice voice, though not as nice as Ella or Nina. Not a big jazz listener and wouldn't pick this up again.

i wanted to like it more. a simple jazz sound with nice classic vocals. however, the vocals were clearly the focus, but didn't really hold any passion for me. it also seemed over vocalized and playful in a gimicky way. I honestly would have preferred David Lee Roth's version of Just a Gigolo.

Vocal Jazz album from before I was born. Not that it makes any difference when the album was made because, even though Sarah Vaughan is a very good vocalist with a great voice, I just don't see the point of this style of music, and find it a chore to listen to .

I’ve never heard of Sarah Vaughn before, and I’m not the biggest fan of jazz music, but this album sounds like it should be pretty fun to listen to. I haven’t really had that many strong opinions on albums like this that I’ve already reviewed, but I’m hoping that At Mister Kelly’s will be the first album like this to really wow me. Unfortunately, I didn’t care for this album that much. Sarah Vaughn is a good vocalist, but I didn’t find anything particularly interesting or unique about her performance on this album. The music itself wasn’t that interesting to me either, and I didn’t think that they did anything to uplift the vocals either. These songs weren’t the most interesting choices either, so if Sarah Vaughn’s singing had more to offer, this wasn’t the setlist to showcase her talent. I wish I had some more insightful things to say about why I didn’t care for this album, but it simply just wasn’t my speed.

Deze valt voor mij in de categorie schijtirritant. De eerste twee tracks had ik nog iets van een schildje waarmee ik het allemaal een beetje buiten de deur kon houden, maar vanaf track 3 kost het me elke paar seconden een hap HP. Ik hou er totaal niet van wat zij aan het doen is. De muziek is redelijk laidback oude kroegjazz, maar dat getetter met die stem schopt me tegen het zere been. Ik kan hier niet van genieten. Sterker nog, ik voel fysiek vanalles gebeuren. Alsof ik in het donker over straat loop en een groepje ongure types zie staan waarbij m'n instinct al aangeeft dat het zometeen rennen danwel rammen wordt. Het is helemaal niet vals, maar het is helemaal wel irritant. 'Bij elke noot er zelf drie bij verzinnen' zegt een wijs man op Whatsapp. 'Op een frequentie die een volwassen man kan laten huilen om zijn mammie' vul ik aan. Ik heb hem worstelend helemaal afgeluisterd maar man, dit kan niet goed voor me zijn geweest. Deze gaat voor mij onderdeel worden van de 1001 canon: Sarah Vaughan mag van mij het podium delen met Astrud Gilberto. Knap gedaan. 1 ster.

I don't like this at all. I've never liked the rambling kind of jazz that just hints at a tune without ever actually pinning one down. As for the scatting on the final track, nope, not for me.

Yes she can sing but it's not appealing, just warbling sounds. Jazz in the background making me want to rip my ears off. The last track made me so angry.

There are so many things about this that i hate. It’s jazz, it’s scatting, it’s repetitive, it’s pretty bland and I feel like she is completely underprepared. On the plus side, her voice is great and the glissandos she can produce with her vocals are awesome. Not for me.

Talented singer performing live with talented musicians, which is entirely what makes some people interested in music in the first place. Not me - I'm interested in the aureur, the creator, the entire process of translating an idea from someone's head to a piece of recorded music. Sweet voice, but the vibrato rapidly began to irritate me. Not an album I would listen to again. Huge respect, but, as I said, not what I listen to music for.

Musically uninteresting but fun

I have heard the name, and a song or two over the years, but I've never heard a full album. And I likely never will again. I didn't find the music, her voice, the songs or the vibe worthy of a future listen. Wow, was it just me or did every one of those songs sound damn near the same as the one before it? It might have been one 35 minute song with short breaks. I was looking forward to her take on "Just A Gigolo" but I think I fell asleep a minute in. If this was a top album in 1957 I'm super glad I wasn't around to endure what was not making the charts. Admittedly, this is not my kind of music but her vocals just didn't cut it, it was so cruiseshipesque. I can't even give this a second star, it's better than a few of the shit-grunge era noise albums I've suffered thru on this T1001 journey but not by much.

This type of smooth lounge jazz clearly isn't my thing. Take away the instruments and it wouldn't really make too much of a difference as it all blends into one. 'September in the Rain' and 'Just One of Those Things' are highlights purely because they're upbeat and bouncy as opposed to much of the albums slow jazz tunes. It's not bad music, but it's really not my cup of tea. Sarah Vaughan has a really lovely voice, but it's not enough to carry this to anything more than one star. It's too similar sounding throughout in a sub genre of music that probably already sounds very similar as it is.

started off neutral but then i started really hating this by the middle nonsensical lyrics, average vocals with off-key medioce moments, boring instrumentals entire album sounds like a down-tempo vibrato exercise. fucking boring! NNN

What absolute trash. Live albums just shouldn't exist

Yes, I listened to the entire album and I don't really know why. The music is relentlessly boring. I'm really wondering if I'm going to be 'sung' to death. It seems absolutely impossible to spend such a lovely evening. The whole set seems to have no real highlights. With a little alcohol and an equally bored accompaniment, I would definitely have fallen asleep. Zero points, I can't even give a point for the album cover, it's just as uninspired. "at Mister Kelly's" wow, does anyone really care, or are there really good drinks there? Let's wash our ears out and hope for the next album.

I love seeing live music, I hate listening to recorded live music. The singer is proficient I guess but nothing about her singing seemed interesting to me. Maybe just a terrible song selection. Not sure why this is listed as a great album.

Jazz, dont like it.

Sarah Vaughan en haar triootje. Leuk voor haar, maar niet voor ons. Het is allemaal maar gekunstel met de stem, expres hoger en lager zingen, alleen maar om te laten zien wat je allemaal kan. Bij het tweede nummer gaat er al iets fout blijkbaar, maar laat ze even merken hoe goed ze wel niet kan improviseren. Jacques Brel probeert nog gepassioneerd een verhaal te vertellen, maar dit is puur vocaal exhibitionisme zonder enige inhoud. Ze kan heus wel zingen hoor, maar ik zat vanaf het eerste nummer eigenlijk al te wachten totdat dit voorbij was. En dan moet je nog meer dan een uur. Maar net als met Joni, zal ik dit afluisteren tot de laatste snik, of vocale uithaal in dit geval, ook al is het op laag volume. Maar man man man, wat is dit verschrikkelijk.

Terribly boring, bad singing 1/10

73 minutes long jazz album. And it's live. Day instantly ruined. This was about as interesting as not listening to any music at all. 1/5 because I'm feeling extra devious today. Very fitting that I'd get this demonic piece of audio as my 666th album.

I assume this was noteworthy because of some live recording techniques.

Pleasant enough, a nice midnight dinner party wind down album. As said before I don't have dinner parties and if I did it wouldn't go on that late nowadays, so probably won't listen to it ever again. The most interesting part was where something fell over (a band member?), which generated a fit of laughter from the audience and from the Vaughan lady too. Just a middle of the road 1

ugh couldn't even get through half the album. i just found it really dreary and of it's time. i do appreciate that she has incredible voice control

Not feeling it; she has a nice voice though. The audio quality is so clear for a recording in 1957. I have to wonder if my grandparents or their parents listened to this record? I will never know.

I would rather hammer rusty nails into my bollocks than listen to that again.

Emy Wijnhuis heeft hetzelfde irritante gejengel in haar zang, maar bij haar kan het net hebben. Sarah's zang daarentegen stoort me echt en ik kon er dus ook helemaal niets mee.

The recording is full of hiss and mics peaking. ruins the best parts of the songs Nothing majorly wrong with the album, jazz just doesnt really hit the spot either feels like a novel genre used for Christmas albums. TLDR Great vocals, feels overly dated to have much impact though but recording poopoo

Im sure this album was revolutionary but it doesnt make it good. And I still have no clue why they keep including live album on this list. Jazz should never be sung imo

Not exactly my style so I wasn't a huge fan of it. The album was from 1957 so pretty old jazz. I did however sort of enjoy September in the rain but this wouldn’t be an album I listen to again. Sarah’s voice however is very nice x

Got a couple of songs in and got very bored. Jumped around the tracklist and it's just more of the same. I get why some people would dig it, and he's got a great voice, but definitely not for me.
