At Mister Kelly's

She definitely has talent and there isn’t any denying, but jazz is just not my music. This album did not appeal to me in any way whatsoever and it was rather boring and something I had to get through.

First off - I love the uncut very live feel (obviously since it IS live) of this record, especially how it starts with a very understated talk to the audience then introduction. And the talent on this is tremendous. But. Man, I hate giving an obvious talent a low personal ranking - I really do. There's just no getting around my personal disinterest in old time vocal jazz. Which I can't entirely explain because I love old instrumental jazz combos - just adding in the vocals crushes any mystery or intrigue for me. Fully acknowledging Sarah Vaughan's talents, I can hear them, I can appreciate them, it's just not my thing. 5/10 2 stars

I thought it was fine - sort of embodies the type of jazz that's really easy to tune out, unfortunately. But I would imagine seeing it in person would be really magical-- what a wonderful voice & energy.

The album cover, rainy night, night life, neon sign, old timey cars (well they are now at least) is just perfect to put you in the mood for some vocal jazz in a cozy Chicago club. I wish the recording was better. Sarah Vaughan's stellar vocals and sparkling personality shine through none the less. Great choice of songs, great band, great voice. I don't usually enjoy live albums, but in this case the crowd and the zigs and zags of the performance add a little extra magic. The whole album feels like a wonderful memorable night out.

Warm vocals over a smooth jazz trio. Playfulness and improvisation along side emotionally driven lyrics create a dynamic listening experience. Enjoyed leaving the crowd reactions in the album makes it feel more like the listener is present at the show.

Her voice is big, fierce, powerful, lush. The jazz is light and far away. Feels like an appropriate live album. She and the audience laughing and joking. Free style singing. I might as well have been there. Homey and satisfying, albeit a bit tired and drab at times. Cool album even if it isn't my thang.

For my son’s generation, it was N’SYNC vs. Backstreet Boys. For my generation, it was Rolling Stones vs. Beatles. For my parents generation is was Sarah vs. Ella. I say why choose! This is an intimate live performance.

It has some issues, like the extended intro telling the audience that there will be a recording happening and that they will be using lyric sheets, and the extended outro of “Willow Weep for Me”, but I feel edified having listened to it.

Half-paid attention to this while doing other things, but still pretty good! Wouldn't say this album is high up there for me, but I can tell Sarah Vaughan is very talented. Now I understand why Father John Misty got angry at that girl who said she sounded just like her and stuff.

Im sure this album was revolutionary but it doesnt make it good. And I still have no clue why they keep including live album on this list. Jazz should never be sung imo

This was perfectly pleasant, as Friday evening wind-down after work, accompanied by a cocktail. An amazing quality of recording, Vaughan’s voice is beautiful, and everyone seems to be having a good time. Lots of jazz standards here, if that’s your thing. It’s not really mine, and this album hasn’t changed my mind. An interesting document, but not music I would put on again by choice.

I preferred he music over the vocals. Oh dear. Not exactly what you're supposed to think of Sarah Vaughan. There was something a little pushy, a little extrovert about the delivery. Which is probably the whole point of being a singer. Maybe it was just my mood. I wanted something mellow to start the morning. The piano and gentle bass achieved this. I quite enjoyed the live aspect of the album as well It adds to the occasion.

The great thing about live performances is they give you a better feel for the performer's personality. This was an intriguing album in that respect. I especially enjoyed the bit where she goofed a little during "Willow Weep for Me"—she acknowledged it, got a few laughs, and kept rolling, totally unfazed. Good stuff.

This is the music I often crave - swanky, soulful & cool. I had never heard of Sarah Vaughn, but I'll be listening to her on a weekly basis (she fits perfectly my work playlist of chill-jazzy artists). Gorgeous voice.

I'm not a big fan of live albums and this one didn't change my mind. I would have liked to hear the instruments more but they are background noise to Sarah's singing. Lot of the songs sounded very similar and I got easily bored before the 20 track album had ended.

Think count Basie spoiled me with jazz, not so impressed by this... She has a good voice though. Some of it sounds like it could be on a fallout soundtrack

Thought this would be a nice but not for me, but her voice absolutely took me on a journey and was so enjoyable and real throughout.

Sarah's voice is so rich and beautiful. I was listening to the album right before bed, and it was the perfect soothing way to end a day. Most definitely 5/5 <3

Classic jazz, and Vaughan has a phenomenal singing voice. A good selection of songs, including some old classics like "Willow Weep for Me". It's probably longer than most listeners may be comfortable with, but that just makes this even more impressive, because it was a live performance.

Every jazz record in this collection seems to scream for more jazz records in this collection. Maybe Sassy oversings (or overemotes) onm a few songs but my is the voice a powerful thing of beauty.

Really loved her rendition of “Just One of Those Things” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” “How High the Moon” was also great. She felt really playful and that made it all the more entertaining. It’s great when jazz singers don’t take themselves so seriously. Mister Kelly’s always has great acts. Maybe the venue brings out the best in performers. Anita O’Day released her Mister Kelly’s the following year I believe, in 1958, and that’s also quite an experience. Again, very loose and fun show to listen to. Great interaction between band members. Hopefully there’s some Anita on this list… This was a great listen regardless

Live albums are often hit or miss, but this live set from the amazing Sarah Vaughan is near perfection. An intimate live recording with Vaughan connecting with the audience right from the start and her magical performance makes this a worthwhile listen. I'm been graduating towards this genre of music for it's old-timey charm and it's classic performances and this album is a good place to start.

In general, I'm not a huge fan of music that focuses around a single vocalist, but having said that I love Sarah Vaughn's voice. She has great control and range. I especially enjoyed How High the Moon, where she declares in the second line that she doesn't know the words, and then scats beautifully through the rest of the song. Who needs lyrics when you're the queen? 4/5

I have heard about Sarah Vaughan but I had never heard her. Now thanks to the challenge I have! I was expecting a singer in the lines of Nina Simone but I found a singer more in the lines of Ella Fitzgerald (whom she reference on How High The Moon). But Sarah is something quite on her own, with very versatile vocal skills and a real neat sense of humour. I spent quite some time with this album and, although not really my thing, it surely is a classic and a keeper. 

I really enjoyed this album a ton, having never heard of her before. She has an incredible voice. I loved the slight outtakes that happened during a couple of the songs, her wit and sense of humor shone through. I will definitely be listening to this album again and checking out her other discography.

Had never heard this before! Initially thought it a little strange that a live album of jazz standards would make the cut for one of the best albums ever, but I really enjoyed this. It felt as if you were there at the venue in Chicago, listening to Sarah Vaughan sing. Thought it was cute that she forgot the words on a few songs, and she still sang with such command. Giving this a 4 because it was nice but it wasn’t show-stopping.

Some solid jazz. It is live and there some songs where they mess up and just kept it in, which is kind of charming. Definitely background music to put on during chores or something but i didn't save any to my spotify.

This is some of the most inoffensive music. Just some easy jazz amplified by non-intrusive vocals. I could listen to this forever, and would recommend the extended version of the album. As John Lennon said, "I like this kind of hot kind of music."

Sarah Vaughan has a gorgeous voice and a great sense of humor! Even when she forgot the lyrics to a song, she made it work and elicited laughter from her audience. What a captivating musician. This live album captures her in sound. Excellent listening.

Now THIS is a great album cover. Sets the mood perfectly for what's about to come. Let's go! After listening, it's a very nice live performance, the couple of blunders that were kept on the final cut where a refreshing touch, something you won't likely see on a modern live album. Particularly liked the slower, smoother numbers like September in the Rain and Stairway to the Stars. Wish there was one or two more emotional songs thrown in, but I guess it would have ruined the mood. Also would have liked the trio to be louder in the mix, especially during the instrumental solos.

Always a spectacular voice.

This album captures live (as amply evidenced in Willow Weep For Me) what one expects from the mythical world of Chicago Jazz. I'm not sure I want to put this in constant rotation but it makes one wish they were there .

I really enjoyed how this was done live and “on the spot” and you could hear her interacting with the crowd. It brings the album to life. She has an incredible voice.

Have never really listened to much jazz, I liked more than I was expecting

Rating/reviewing this album is a bit difficult for me because even though her voice is honeyed and *gorgeous,* and the music is lively and pleasant…it’s simply not my taste. I’ve just never gravitated to jazz. Even so, it’s easy to tell how talented Vaughan is, and the album feels smooth and cozy. The tracks I like the most are “Willow Weep For Me,” “Be Anything But Darling Be Mine,” and “Honeysuckle Rose.”

Super smooth. Sarah Vaughan is up there in my favourite jazz vocalists, and I think this is the album of hers that I have most enjoyed. Stripped of her usual highly orchestrated, string-heavy arrangements to a bare trio backing, intimately recorded, you get to hear her beautiful tone and phrasing without distraction. There is a touch more breathiness and slight husk in the quieter moments that sounds close and real. Her ability to deliver a real emotional content is wonderful. Probably my favourite Sarah Vaughan record, and I will probably pick a copy up when I see one around. Love the versions of Just a Gigolo and How High the Moon that close out this album.

I had never heard of Sarah Vaughan before this. As soon as I heard her voice, I opened up Wikipedia and started reading up on her; evidently she was very important back in her day. Her voice sounds so inviting, and her vibrato is incredible. It's so warm and enticing that it makes one feel like they're in the room with her as she's singing. I'll definitely have to look into her other work at some point. Favorites: September in the Rain, Just One of those Things

This is a live album featuring Sarah Vaughan and her trio recorded at the legendary Chicago jazz club Mister Kelly's on Rush St in 1957. Sarah Vaughan also known as "Sassy" and "The Divine One" was a decorated (Grammy's, jazz awards) jazz vocalist starting in the 1940's with a great, tremendous voice. Her trio consisted of Jimmy Jones-piano, Richard Davis-double bass and Roy Haynes-drums. The songs have Sarah covering jazz and musical standards from the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's. This is a pretty laid back affair: Sarah's voice dominates with a softer jazz backing band. The man who introduces the concert tells the audience she will be singing from lyric sheets. And, in a few songs she flat out says she doesn't know the lyrics. One of those songs, "How High the Moon", is one of my favorite on the album as she says it's an Ella Fitzgerald song, doesn't know the lyrics and starts improvising. It was fantastic. Other song highlights included "Stairway to the Star" - Incredible vocal ending, "Lucky in Love" and "Poor Butterfly." I'd imagine this would hit the spot on a Sunday afternoon while reading a book or doing something. Honestly, at 113 minutes, it was rather long. If your into more relaxing jazz music with an incredible vocalist, this is your album. I appreciated it for that.

If I vote it higher than 2 on general principle, it's going to be an amazing record. OK, so I've listened to it and it's a 4 star. Her voice is nothing short of amazing. The band are well mic'd and tighter than a gnat's twat. Obviously if this were studio recorded it'd be five stars, but there we go...

I feel like I *should* enjoy this music more than I do. But it's just kind meh for me. I don't love the big band stuff, with the exception of the latin big bands. Her vocal are great but stylistically it doesn't grab me.

Listening to this kind of thing is like reading a classic book. I can hear the craft, I can see why people would enjoy it, but it's just not for me and I find it boring.

Good jazz sound

Wow...yesterday Ella Fitzgerald appears in my rotation and today I get Sarah Vaughan? I don't know what I did to deserve such royal treatment, but I'll take it. Ms. Vaughan's voice makes me cry in the best possible way. PS - I'm cracking up as she sings 'How High The Moon' and she has to improv because she doesn't know the words, and she's singing about how she doesn't know the words. Awesome.

I love how relaxed the atmosphere is on the album. It is like Sarah Vaughan is putting on a show just for you. Such an intimate live album as opposed to the at times bombastic stadium fillers. I need to listen to Sarah Vaughan some more.

At first I felt out of my element with this mid-50’s jazz album, but I’d be lying if I didn’t have a smile on my face by the end of “How High the Moon”. -edit for future me: Apple Music only had half the album (acc. to Wikipedia track list), so this goes for tracks 1-9

Y'know, I think there's only so much I can get out of this old-style jazz. I understand the importance and necessity of it as the groundwork for everything that comes after, but taken on its own it is just so much less interesting than 90% of stuff being made a few decades down the line. Maybe when I'm old the kids will be saying the same thing about modern music, but I can only judge what I enjoy here and now.

She has a really strong voice. Think I'd much prefer a studio recording to this live album. As I'm not sure what the live aspect adds to this. However her voice alone makes it an enjoyable listen, "Be Anything but Darling be Mine" my favourite track.

Outside of like wildly immature stuff there seems to be humor missing from a lot of music now. Like this was solid and also pretty funny moments.

Authentic and fun to listen to. Her music was fun and I liked how she interacted with the audience.

While I appreciate the quality and range of the vocal performance, to me this is background music. It doesn't make me feel "involved" or like I'm an active participant.

She’s obviously a great singer but this was just kind of boring. It was nice to have in the background when I worked and impressive that it was all presumably done in one take.

It's rare that a Live album should be considered a must listen, this is one of them. There is something about early Jazz and the American Songbook that only improves when performed live in a small club. Sarah Vaughn is one of the top females singers from this era, sometimes overshadowed by Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, her voice remained at it's peak throughout her career and didn't suffer the fallbacks that the others did. Good solid performance. 4/5.

Refreshing

"At Mister Kelly's" is the first time I've heard any Sarah Vaughan, and her voice is instantly captivating. This album, a 75 minute live set of Vaughan in a live setting with a backing trio, is the perfect showcase for it. Right from the introduction, in which the compere informs the audience they're all about to become Mercury recording artists, there's such an intimate and cozy feel to this recording. Tender ballads like "Willow Weep for Me", "Stairway to the Stars" and "Embraceable You" are delivered with care and precision, alongside upbeat tracks like "Lucky in Love", "If This Isn't Love", "Just One Of Those Things" and many more. The backing trio are made up of Jimmy Jones on piano, Richard Davis on double-bass (who would later play on Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks"), and Roy Haynes on drums. They display some fantastic ability, but really it's Vaughan's show, so the playing is restrained and minimal, leaving a lot of room around her vocals. While it works for the overall atmosphere coming across here, I'd be excited to hear Vaughan with the power of a full band behind her. Although the performances are beautiful, the song selections themselves (all jazz/trad-pop standards or showtunes) are much of a muchness and start blending together late in the set owing to the same stripped back arrangements. Every now and then, something breaks through: "How High The Moon", with its improvised scat singing proclaimed to be in the style of Ellie Fitzgerald, is both a hoot and one of the most stunning displays of Vaughan's range and technique. "It Has To Be Love" is another fun track, with an effortless vocal and Jones clearly having fun with some piano glissandos. All in all, I'm glad I heard this and it introduced me to some new standards as well as Sarah Vaughan's magnificent voice, but smooth vocal jazz still feels best suited to background music for me.

Shmm-bop-a-dee-do-wap-a-pa-dee-do-be-daa. Amusing part in it when the song goes wrong and not bad overall, but I’ll probably never listen to it again.

I love how intimate this album feels. It’s warm, it’s inviting. It’s the album equivalent to taking a sip of hot tea. Sarah’s voice is absolutely incredible. Even with this being said, I didn’t find myself fully engaged by it. I’m not entirely sure why. I will say, this album would be great to bake to! It just gives that cozy feeling :)

Super sweet :) I don’t have a whole lot of thoughts on this one, to be honest. I liked the music and I love how natural it felt. I have an affinity for that live feeling, especially when it’s as cozy as this album. Sarah Vaughan has a great charismatic charm and her adlibs are fun. I also LOVE her voice! In spite of all of this, I’m not head over heels about this album. The music, while pleasing to the ears, is not all that interesting to me. The best parts are when Vaughan breaks script and things break the fourth wall. I wish I had more to say about WHY the music wasn’t interesting to me but I wasn’t engaged enough to take notes. Good music to play in the background while chillin with people you love.

Exquisite voice and accomplished confident performer. I usually choose to listen to Ella for this type of jazz, but Sarah Vaughan's voice is so smooth. Great piano playing (drums and bass are so good you don't notice them). Lovely recording.

Oh man, I love live jazz albums. I admit to having a bias on this front. I just REALLY love the silkiness in jazz singers' voices. It's interesting, one of my other favorite albums on this list--Sam Cooke--I enjoyed just as much, but they are SO different. Instead of being energizing, this album is calming and mellow. And Sarah Vaughan is VERY funny, in a natural, effortless way. Classic jazz attitude, I love her energy. Fave track: Willow Weep for Me. Extra points for the funny crowd interactions. She's like a damn comedian dealing with a heckler.

A great voice and cool jazz songs are always good in my books. The live recording, with the announcement to the crowd and the mistakes all left in, adds this level of authenticity that made me enjoy it even more.

I love the live album recording, it feels more alive and like you are a part of it. I liked the little error in Willow Weep for Me and How High the Moon, I'm glad they kept it in. Lovely trio, makes me wanna listen to more jazz. Favourite songs: Thou Swell, How High the Moon

A nice little album. Sarah's voice is pretty incredible and the jazz accompaniment is very pleasant, although a bit too minimal for my liking on some songs. Definitely a nice listen though. 6/10

This is another one of these albums that you know is highly appreciated for good reasons, but it is not for me I am afraid.

One of the greatest voices in jazz, accompanied in a tasteful, low-key, style by an excellent piano trio. This was a wonderful live recording of the album, which transported me to the actual jazz club in Chicago. The improv moments toward the end of Willow Weep for Me and the nod to Ella Fitzgerald in the final song were quite amusing. It was also nice to hear another interpretation of Thou Swell, which I only knew in Betty Carter's fast version (and which, to be fair, I still prefer).

I didn't get much of a chance to listen. I was expecting to really like the offering but found it just OK

I think that if there was only one jazz singer that I could listen to for the rest of my life I'd probably pick Sarah Vaughan. She has a beautiful tone and a broad range. I'm surprised that 1001 would pick this over her eponymous release with Clifford Brown a couple of years earlier. The latter received more critical acclaim, gets played to death on jazz stations and was apparently Sarah's favorite release from the era. Maybe because the great solos from the sextet took away from her performance? Back to this album, while I love her voice, a double album of jazz standards with minimal participation from her backing trio makes it hard to differentiate between the songs after a while.

She undoubtedly has lovely voice and I like her sense of humour and unflappability when she messed up her lines on Willow Weep for me. Also she gave a nice shout-out to her contemporary Ella Fitzgerald doing some scatting along the way. Her backing trio basically stays out of the way so the spotlight can shine on her which is fine. However, the material that she sings is pretty piss boring and not very cutting edge. 1957 was one of the greatest years in Jazz history and there was some really innovative jazz released that year, eg Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners, Miles - Round about Midnight, Cookin', and Walkin', Sonny Rollins - Way out West, Charles Mingus - The clown etc., I hope those albums appear on this list because I'd much rather listen to them than this middle of the road stuff.

Instant fan. You can really hear the influence of Ella Fitzgerand in Sarah's vocals (which gets directly referenced in How High the Moon). The accompanying band is so smooth.

Such a great intro to the live performance in the beginning of the album. Amazing singer and sometimes a bit forgotten amongst other great names of the same era, like Billie Holiday. Highly recommended.

Got a couple of songs in and got very bored. Jumped around the tracklist and it's just more of the same. I get why some people would dig it, and he's got a great voice, but definitely not for me.

Sarah Vaughan has one of the most beautiful and versatile voices I have ever heard. This album is perfect down to the vocals, the accompaniment, and her natural humor. I absolutely adore this artist and this album.

A live album by one of the best voices to have ever existed with a truly professional band. The chosen songs are some of the more famous jazz songs, but not fully engaging throughout the album. Where they go a bit more uptempo, they band gets to showcase themselves a bit more.

This is a great Jazz/Swing-Album from an artist I previously knew nothing about. It's a live recording, too, but only runs about 35 minutes. Sarah Vaughan has a fantastic voice; and the way she saved "Willow Weep for me" after having forgotten some of the lines is truly elegant and funny at the same time. 4/5

It is a jazz album that is 72 minutes long. I struggle with jazz, mainly because I am not cool enough. Also the songs were not that good.

Usually not a fan of live albums but on this one the ambient noise only adds to the experience.

I can hear why people would like it, and the moments of behind the scenes where she "forgets" words or speaks to the crowd are very cool. Love her voice, but all the "American songbook" songs sound like relics from a bygone era, which I suppose they are. Enjoyable enough, but not one I will come back to

A nice relaxing jazz album with a nice late night smokey feel. Sarah Vaughan has a voice very similar to the more well known Ella Fitzgerald. It's a very pleasant album, that's well sung and performed but lacking the gusto to make it a true classic. Had to seek out the mono version because I'm the stereo was full of dropouts.

She has a nice voice and the instrumentation is fine but I feel like there are better albums in the same vein that I would generally rather listen to.

Honestly, putting aside that the genre isn't for me, I don't think she had a great voice. I appreciated the humor where she messed up one tune, but then she completely ad-libbed a second one after admitting she didn't know the lyrics, so I'm not sure what's up with that.

i think this unlocked a secret memory from my grandfather. personally i liked hearing the audience, sets a mood i really enjoyed.

Take a time machine back to 1957, sit in a smokey jazz club in Chicago and hear the live musical act of Sarah Vaughn and her Trio (Jones on Piano, Davis on Bass, Haynes on Drums). Natural stage banter, a smooth backing band, and Vaughan's wonderful voice is a treat to listen to. I'm listening to the LP version here, which is significantly shorter than the CD version but gives the full idea, I think. She even shouts out Ella Fitzgerald at the end and scats for a bit, it's great.

A beautiful intimate performance. Sympathetic accompaniment, tasteful playing and a great batch of songs. Sarah's voice is impeccable, rhe arrangements are perfect and her delivery; relaxed inimate and rhythmicly they swing. Don't often understand the rhyme or reason behind some of the non-rock choices but for this one I'm grateful that I was able to discover this amazing album 5 🌟

What a stunning voice, and what a beautifully ambient album. I'm not familiar with vocal jazz in general, and this makes me want to explore the genre more. My top pick is 'Willow Weep for Me', both for the lovely melancholic sound and the interaction with the crowd.

I get that it’s a completely facile take on a talented woman’s career, but I just wanted her to break into Feeling Good or My Baby Just Cares for me. Sounded like Nina Simone but without the stand out tracks.

La voce colpisce subito, fin dalle prime note di 'September in the Rain'. Affascinante e ottimo con un cocktail in una sera piovosa autunnale (duh). Simpatica e ironica, anche quando non conosce le parole, arricchito dalla registrazione live con applausi e risate del pubblico. Non lo avrei mai ascoltato tipicamente e probabilmente non lo farò molto spesso, ma mi ha colpito molto positivamente.
