So, just voting on whether it's my taste or not. Sarah is clearly a talented jazz singer and her backing group is solid. This is just not the kind of jazz I enjoy. Okay, Sarah not knowing the words on the last song and going completely off script is fucking hilarious.
A well done performance of a genre I feel nothing for. Her voice got a little annoying to me after awhile.
Not my genre. Sounded very piano bar / lounge singer to me. She did sound great but not what I listen to. Highlight for me was hearing just a gigolo.
I thought this was ok. I think prefer some of the other vocal jazz artists but Sarah Vaughan has a nice voice.
The henry fonda guy said “don’t mind the lyric sheets it’s chill” then she didn’t even know the lyrics cmon now
Boring. Bad scatting at the mid point. Most songs sound the same. Just couldn't get into it.
I like Sarah Vaughan, but I rarely like a live album. This was no exception.
#508. If she was singing at a bar I already happened to be at, I wouldn't necessarily be upset about it, but I can't say I'd specifically seek her out to go listen to though. 2/5: bar background music
It's fine, I guess? The artist clearly has talent and skills, but it's music to put on in the background when you're trying to look sophisticated. I cannot imagine playing this album in 2025 and having somebody say "hell yeah, turn that up, this is my jam!"
She has a good voice but the music itself bored me by the end. Not terrible by any means just not for me.
the opening monologue really takes you in the mood of the record. it's nice for a live album to have the feeling of one long take (sometimes there are some fades out or cuts) even the little accidents are kept in. it's refreshing the jazz classics are sung and played well but nothing groundbreaking. not a real memorable performance on one of those well known songs. like my girlfriend said : "it's a good record to wake up to but nothing more"
Lovely voice but I still don't like Jazz, or at least not this jazz. Maybe when I grow up ! 2.5
Not really for me.
Too long
Meh
Pretty standard. Nothing to see here.
Thought I might enjoy this but found it a repetitive tbh
Not into it personally
She's a very good singer but this kind of music doesn't appeal to me. Rating: 2
1. zeptember - 1.5 2. uuillouu - 2 3. thingz - 1 4. darling - 1.5 5. zuuell - 1 6. ztarz - 1.5 7. roze - 1 8. gigolo - 1 9. moon - 1.5
This is wallpaper music. It's moderate and responsible. It's got a touch of the normal. But I like my music to be energetic, daring... well, this just isn't for me, I suppose.
Nice music, wouldn't listen to it my playlist though
2.5 it was alright just too low energy for me
Love the singer, didn't really like the album? A studio album would be better than this live one
Pleasant enough but quite boring. A perfect example is “Just A Gigolo” which has none of the humor or verve of the Louis Prima version. The one exception is the final song that seems like a self deprecating joke or maybe just a bad song.
A nice voice with technically impressive recordings. Not much I'd listen to again, but it's perfect for playing quietly on a speaker in the background of a Christmas party at home, if you're tired of hearing Rudolph or Jingle Bells.
Ok jazz singer and great quality just didn’t really feel it
#73 It's fine, just not for me.
Another darn done diddily live album. I'll probably drop to the ground from oxygen deprivation as a consequence of saying the same things over and over again before I get through all of these. LIGHTING ROUND, BAYBEEE!!!! It's pleasant enough. I'd enjoy any live performance in-person, but think the experience is stripped back when listening to it on a record. I find it hard to appreciate live albums when I have no familiarity with the artist's main discography.
She’s got a lovely voice. This style of music just does nothing for me unfortunately.
It's interesting to hear a live album that has genuine flubs and mistakes. She forgot the words multiple times. It gives it a charm that is absent from most live albums. She's also a very good singer. Still, I'm not a fan of the crowd noise, and it overstayed its welcome.
beautiful voice, nice sound, but it feels like all the songs sound the same more or less
Pleasant, if forgettable
Nice jazz record and incredible vocals by Sarah Vaughn. And you cant ignore the musicianship of the band on this record. But unfortunately, jazz is one of my lesser loved musical genres. Please don’t hate on me.
A skilled singer with a great voice, excellent jazz vocals - but I hate jazz vocals, so......
Not bad, she is a great singer but it's just not the kind of music that I like. I'm sure that she is amazing and everything it's just not my style. Don't see myself listening to this again.
Album 139 and still working on appreciating the Jazz albums. Not hooked on this one.
Sure, I can listen to this live. I don't need the recording. Will I listen to again: 0%
Some of these albums are so old that it's hard to really fully enjoy them
I think you have to really be a fan of this music to enjoy it. Nice voice but just a bit too dull for my liking.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I can’t go from Kollaps to this.
I wonder if the reason this album struck me as so bland, toothless and mediocre is that it came immediately after that Kollaps album. At the time, I hated that album. But two days later I can’t stop thinking about it. Now all I want to hear is scary machine noise that makes me question my entire conception of what music is, what art means, what life could be. I’m like a cannibal who has tasted human blood and can now only be sated by the most forbidden meats. 2 stars for Sarah vaughan’s safe, acceptable jazz. 2 stars for my safe, acceptable existence. Somewhere, far off in the distance, the sound of a mechanical drill whirs. It calls to me. I’m coming home.
Usually like this sort of stuff but I couldn't get in with her voice.
It's jazz and I wasn't in the mood
Pleasant, not my vibe
Ok, I like instrumental jazz more.
Not my kind've music but just proves more artists need to pull a lady gaga and cover older music
It was nice imagining myself as part of the crowd.
I don’t think I like vocal jazz. This sounds like every vocal jazz thing I’ve ever heard. It always sounds quiet and gentle. No energy or excitement.
20/09/24 Never heard of the artist before. The music didn't really grab my attention.
Of the 3 big ones, Im team fitzgerald. Love billie and have never really gotten to like Sarah's voice for some unknown reason. This Album is great as she sang the best songs and displays mastery of singing and her voice which has a wide range. Great album better than others I had heard. Soothing voice, clear vocals. Great arrangements. I just dont love her as I do Ella and Billy. I do get their importance for music history in context and how they were the pioneers of all we have today.
slwo
I'm sure my grandfather would have loved this, but it's not really my thing. All music from this era just sounds like lounge singer-y stuff. It's not *bad*, and she has a lovely voice, but the over-use of vibrato from this era starts to get on my nerves a bit.
OK, not great.
If there turns out to be a hell and I am sent there, I imagine they'll have a scat version of How High The Moon played on a loop 24/7. Band sounded decent though.
Nice to hear. Favourite track Just a Giggalo, which feels different when it's a woman singing about a man.
This is generally one of my favorite styles of jazz. Just a singer, an excellent pianist, and some soft percussion. Her voice is just slightly off-putting for me though. And with this style being so stripped down, something as small as that makes a fairly big difference. Her scatting also is just not that impressive. Overall, it's a fine jazz album, but it's not particularly unique nor incredibly excellent. Favorite Song(s): Willow Weep for Me
This album gradually wore me down song by song until I was resigned to give it just one star. I was bored out of my mind. Then in the last song she didn’t know how to sing it and talked about Ella Fitzgerald singing it in a crazy way which made me laugh. Don’t say I didn’t give it a chance
The scat song kinda made me hate this, but there is something to jazz lounge that feels nice. Idk, I’m torn
Kind of an annoying voice
nice voice but dull as fuck
yeah she’s a good singer with a great voice. but i don’t give a fuck
Bit too trad jazzy for me.... Sure it would be great listening in a smoke filled bar.
It was ok
I'm sure I'd like this if I was musically educated but my plebeian ears find this style of jazz to be irritating. It just sounds like everybody has to show off their chops instead of working cohesively. If you want to vamp wait until you get a space and remember you are the singer's backing band. Sarah has a great voice but I'm not a fan of her phrasing.
like a feather dancing between the rain drops the pavement shall crack beneath the weight of the sins made by all the citizens of the kingdom under the reign of veil everyone is by themselves everyone is by themselves alone
Pretty nice vocals but the background piano and percussion is soft. Song lyrics were bad and cringy. Good for background music
I was kind of into it. This type of music isn't really my favorite jazz has just never done it for me.
I'm not a fan of jazz music from that era, it's just a firm no.
Repetitief
Too Jazzzy
Lovely to start with then got so so dull
This is a rare one; an album that gets worse the more I listen to it. Jazz is awful music, and even if Sarah Vaughan has a great voice, she chooses to use it as an annoying instrument. The scatting on the final track is horrible, the way she drags out the syllables is annoying. Even if the album is less than 40 minutes, it never seems to end. At least the first tracks are listenable, but I will never listen to this album again.
I was pretty bored listening to this album. Her voice is definitely beautiful, but none of the songs felt special or stood out to me. Each song just seemed to roll unremarkably into the next. This was my first and will be my only listen.
She can sing, and that was nice. And it was recorded really well, especially for a live album of this time. But I was so bored listening to it and it's so long.
I’m glad a jazz singer is on the list. Not my cup of tea
Alright if you like this style. Not for me though
This didn't seem like it was recorded in the 1950's and I didn't hate it. However, I still don't like live albums because you get the annoying talking bits and clapping and they Are always too long. Let's be honest I'm not going to hear this again unless I'm sitting in an old-school cocktail lounge
Only giving this a 2 because of the scat song ..zip da doo doo wa buba looba dooda. Had three listeners today and we all agreed.
Mostly, if not all, covers with a few "I don't know the lyrics" thrown around. Not for me.
Just wasn't my cup of tea. But Sassy has an amazing voice.
The screw ups and ad libs were my favorite parts.
Elevator/hotel lobby jazz
5/10 Old school smooth jazz Extremely well delivered and sung beautifully. She and her voice sound full of character At points you feel like you’re in the room, the recording quality is superb But overall, it is a relatively samey vocal jazz album. Excellent in a bar, less essential as an album tbh Hated the last track Best: Willow Weep for Me
Another genre that isn't up my alley, but like other Jazz albums, easy to listen to. I guess I will keep the 2 stars streak going.
lovely hotel lobby music :)
Nothing special, this style of vocal jazz doesn't hold up. But it was fine to listen to.
Solid chanteuse-esque vocals but there was no ache, no joy, no lonesome depth of expression, nothing to get me invested, nothing to make me feel. Anything.
Beautiful voice, but I’ve never been one for Live albums. Crowd noise and tittering just takes me out of the music. Although it was nice to hear her humour.
she has a nice voice
I love instrumental jazz but struggle so much to get into jazz vocals. I do love the surprises and imperfections that come with the live recording, and Sarah seems like a genuine talent but I have to deduct half a star for the gratuitous vibrato.
She might have a great voice, but I couldn't stand it. Not my bag of tea.
I tried. It was ok
Eh.
Great voice but it didn’t do much for me.
2.5 It was fine. Made me look into Mister Kellys a bit more. Maybe it is that association as to why it was included on the list
In a nutshell: live, cosy jazz. Endearing persona, lovely voice, great backing band. I appreciate it, but it somehow feels…soulless? Perhaps a little flat compared to Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. The only other good thing going it’s one of the earliest live albums on the list. Sorry, Sarah. It’s a no from me. 4/10
singing is nice, but personally not into jazz and dislike the background/crowd noises in live albums
Sarah Vaughan is a genius, but this is not a great live record.
This is the kind of music I feel like I am not capable of fully appreciating. I think it's nice, but I don't entirely understand it, I guess. Her voice is incredible but I am just such an idiot when it comes to jazz. It feels too unstructured to me and I don't really get the appeal of all the beebopping around. Yeahhhhhh I don't get this. At times it just feels like joke music to me? "How High the Moon" is ridiculous. But feeling this way makes me feel like a pleb! I am not proud!
What a voice! Great rainy Sunday lazy around the house kinda music. Not sure I would ever put on 50's music/standards, but certainly didn't mind this one. 9 songs and 35 minutes of chilllllll
Sarah Vaughan's voice is immaculate but this style of jazz kind of bores me to tears. I need cosmic exploration more than I need a rainy night in Chicago, nahmean? Also, imagine wanting to listen to any version of "Just A Gigolo" that ISN'T David Lee Roth?
Boring. Good voice
Good voice but not my style 2.3
It's a good thing I was doing other things while listening to this because it was a very lengthy album with basically the same type of songs, so if you weren't familiar with Sarah's music, you wouldn't be able to tell that it's not the same song on repeat. I know that this would have been an epic album 67 years ago but.. yes, personally didn't enjoy that much today.
What a sultry voice! Great renditions of old tunes, along with really nice originals. Feels very intimate, and flows like an in person concert. Feels like a dim edison bulb and a waterspot glass.
# 169 : OLD! Another live album! Slow and drawn out, I can listen to it, but its not for me. Nothing stood out and I kept going to sleep LOL! Great voice though - she can really sing! Fav Track : How High The Moon
Great voice, but she literally did not know the words to the song TWICE. How do you record covers without knowing the words?
Wasn't minding this despite preferring my jazz to be instrumental. Then the last track started and the vocals made it unlistenable.
Yay. A jazz album.
Meh. Lite myz. Men inte jättebra. Texterna är verkligen hjärndöda. "Please be mine"...
Nice enough.
Jazz un peu chiant
It was cool how the production didn’t really help her voice at all — it felt very raw and authentic and she was very talented. However I really didn’t dig when she talked to the audience and said she didn’t know the songs, I get that it makes it feel authentic but that’s some amateur shit and doesn’t belong on such a highly acclaimed album. 4.5/10
6/10 Highlight: Sarah Vaughan - Just One Of Those Things
It was nice something to put in the background but not very stand out sing along stuff
Wow her voice was amazing. But not my music really
Nice voice, not for me.
Pretty. The live performance added to the ambiance perfectly. A little on the boring side.
Too much vibrato in the voice. Enjoyed the band.
Big voice but smooth jazz vocals are not my thing
Meh. All the songs sounded the same. I don’t think an album of live covers belongs on this list
Beautiful voice and different speed compared to nowadays rat race. Perfect music to slow down and de-stress.
Nice, but not really my thing. Maybe on a different day I'd rate higher...
Too much Jazz
Surprisingly good
Despite liking the genre, this album didn't resonate with me.
Zmęczyło mnie
Really not for me
Not my cup of tea but can appreciate it
Nuh uh
1/5 - Never listening again 2/5 - Its ok, but not for me 3/5 - Will listen again 4/5 - I love it 5/5 - Going in my playlist "September in the Rain" 3/5 "Willow Weep for Me" 2/5 "Just One of Those Things" 2/5 "Be Anything (But Be Mine)" 2/5 "Thou Swell" 1/5 "Stairway to the Stars" 3/5 "Honeysuckle Rose" 2/5 "Just a Gigolo" 2/5 "How High the Moon" 1/5 "I dont know the words of this song but im going to sing it anyway." Not for me, dont like her voice. Album: 2/5
Would be good background music at home. Not usually my thing. Most of the songs sounded similar. Lounge act kind of music.
Decent but not my bag
Ugh I wish I was more of Jazz girlie. Couldn't really get into this. Kinda cool that it was a live performance though!
I’m a fan of some jazz, but this wasn’t my cup of tea.
Feels straight out of a film noir - can practically smell the smoke and booze of Mister Kelly's. Musically it's not my cup of tea though
Good, but personally not super “jazzed” about that genre 😝
Nice enough voice, though can't figure out why she should need lyric sheet. The songs weren't complicated. The last one was apparently scat, but I didn't think it that bad. Not for me though, solid 2.
great voice, not my thing though...
I would enjoy this as live background music while out for dinner and/or drinks but would not seek it out on my own.
Nothing noteworthy here. I can appreciate some soft jazz, but all of these tracks just sounded way too "samey." Just her singing in the same style over the same soft jazz on loop. Nothing wrong with it though, just not something that grabbed my attention or that I will ever come back to. Something I did find interesting was that this artist has a discography of nearly 100 albums over her career! Absolutely insane!
Not a bad album but not my particular taste
Not my jam. Strong voice though. Can imagine she would have been popular in her day.
Not my thing, but can see the appeal
I have listened to Sarah Vaughan before, and I like her, but this one was just Ok.
I can say after many hours listening to Fitzgerald and Vaughan that I'm no great fan of vocal jazz. And so it goes here. Nothing wrong with anything, except it does very little for me. How High The Moon is a bit of a reach, here's me forgetting all the words and saying the first thing that comes into my head.
Not my thing
\"At Mister Kelly's\" by Sarah Vaughan captures the essence of her powerful crooning voice, but unfortunately, it's a recording that struggles to fully translate her energy. The album, which preserves a live performance at the legendary venue, showcases Vaughan's vocal prowess and impressive range. Tracks like \"I've Got the World on a String\" and \"Misty\" highlight her skillful interpretation and emotive delivery. However, the recording quality can be a barrier, failing to capture the dynamic presence that she was known for in live performances. This lack of energy in the recording dampens the overall impact, making it challenging to fully immerse oneself in the experience. While Vaughan's talent remains evident, \"At Mister Kelly's\" falls short in preserving the true essence of her captivating live shows. 2/5
It's alright. Probably the least interesting early female vocal jazz we've had on the list. If I wanted something like this I'd probably just listen to Nina Simone or Aretha Franklin
I think I prefer jazz vocals that are a bit less showy or sink into the instrumentals more.
Not my genre or style. Too soft. She had a nice voice though.
Not my favorite
Zzz
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Just One of Those Things (3) 2 - Stairway to the Stars (6) 3 - Honeysuckle Rose (7)
The audio quality and drop outs really took me out of the zone here that the live performance was desperate to conjure up.
alternating between maudlin and lachrymose – and sometimes, dear god, both at once.
This was an okay album. It didn’t seem that bad live since this came out in the 50s and people actually had to know how to sing then. Vaughan is a good singer and it shows on this album but this is a bit dated. Feels like a song grandparents would reminisce on. It’s rather short and listened to it twice but it’s hardly worth revisiting. 4.6/10
Was enjoying it to start, but the more I listened, the more it annoyed me
Again with live albums. I also prefer instrumental jazz to vocal jazz. Also prefer Billie Holiday and Nina Simone over Sarah Vaughan. Overall, it's just meh.
Big jazz fan, but very few vocal jazz albums grab me. Didn't love this one.
I found this difficult to listen to . Perhaps the way it was recorded but through my headphones it seems to shift from one ear to the other so much so I thought my headphones were broken.
I think this would have been lovely to have been in attendance at while knocking back a few drinks. Listening to it 70 years later is a bit tedious. 50s artists tended to be fairly one dimensional and this fits that bill. Talented musicians and a great voice with some bits of fun banter, but too long for me.
Willow Weep For Me
The first couple songs are great especially listening to in the background, the later songs aren't as interesting and I disliked the last track.
Great voice, but not for me. Trailed off at the end too. 4/10
BL: never heard of Sarah Vaughan before - but saw she opened for Ella Fitzgerald so the expectations are high. Mr Kelly’s seems like one of those mythical venues smothered in history, I’d never heard of it before but to know it supported Ella Fitzgerald, Barbera Streisand, Woody Allen and Richard Pryor is quite some feat, especially for a venue with a capacity of 200 odd. So my hopes are high AL: the first thing that stuck out to me was how brilliant the recording and mastering is for a live album from ‘57 - obviously the actual PA set up was minimalistic due to the small venue size which reduces feedback but more live albums should be like this. As to the singing - she has an inflection style similar to the one Amy Winehouse would adopt many years later, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I personally find it a bit annoying and I don’t glue with it well. I can appreciate on a technical level she’s an amazing singer - unfortunately it’s just not for me, I wanted to like this album a lot though. 2/5
Decent jazz, evoking images of a smoky club venue, but as this was a live album it went on for soooo long that I was quite relieved when it finished.
she can belt, 1 and done for me
Vocal jazz isn't really my bag
Even though the album is fairly short, all tracks blend into one. Not too many standing out ones besides first few. I'm definitely not a jazz-head much... Still have to admit the production/quality of the album is stellar! Rating: 2.5 (Neutral) Wouldn't mind listening to this album in the background while sitting in a cafe. Best song: Willow Weep For Me (Some parts of this song reminded me of one of Bjork's songs. Beautiful piano work) Worst song: How High The Moon (High notes of the singer's voice were unpleasant to listen to).
The voice of Sarah Vaughan was a favorite of my mother. So I have a bit of a sweet spot for her. The sound is incredibly pleasant and makes you want to curl up on a New Orleans porch with a book and a tall cold glass of iced tea.
This is the most demur live show I've ever heard. It's a little unsettling. A black woman at a club in 1957 standing in front of an audience singing and in between songs addressing the audience with politeness and niceties. You can hear the whiteness in the golf claps from the audience. Sarah Vaughan has a great voice very similar to Ella Fitzgerald. The piano softly keying in the background and a measured delivery by Sarah V creates a really eerie experience... Beware of your surroundings when listening to this. For example if there's an older woman slowly stirring her tea with a metal spoon near you ... GET OUT!
Best Song: September in the Rain. Nicely melancholy, although could do without the recording industry intro. Worst Song: Stairway To The Stars. A prime example of the syrupy, over-indulgence that plagues a lot of this genre of music. Overall: She's got a nice voice, but I'm not sure it's so wonderful to havie the staying power necessary for me to want to listen to this today. Hearing her sing about Ella Fitzgerald just made me wonder why not listen to her instead?
A live album. Her voice is amazing but her jazz trio is recorded way too far back in the mix. I find ithe over loud vocals quite off-putting as I want to hear the backing melody. A shame really. 2
Genre: Jazz Favorite songs: September in the rain
The announcer really did Sarah dirty by announcing at the stop she would be using lyric sheets. Otherwise all I’m hearing is Mya Rudolph doing scat improv here.
The cover is a mess, how is the music? Uninispired lounge music. Way to turn good songs into dreary slow meandering outings. She can sing to some degree, if rather limited in her conveyance of emotion. I suppose she is a product of her time. I just recomend that people compare her version of Just a Gigolo with that performed by Dave Lee Roth or Louis Prima.
nice Blues / Jazz voice; but for me the music is a little bit too old-fashioned; not a fan;
beautiful voice, nice songs but there are definitely plenty of better live jazz singer albums out there
She definitely has talent and there isn’t any denying, but jazz is just not my music. This album did not appeal to me in any way whatsoever and it was rather boring and something I had to get through.
First off - I love the uncut very live feel (obviously since it IS live) of this record, especially how it starts with a very understated talk to the audience then introduction. And the talent on this is tremendous. But. Man, I hate giving an obvious talent a low personal ranking - I really do. There's just no getting around my personal disinterest in old time vocal jazz. Which I can't entirely explain because I love old instrumental jazz combos - just adding in the vocals crushes any mystery or intrigue for me. Fully acknowledging Sarah Vaughan's talents, I can hear them, I can appreciate them, it's just not my thing. 5/10 2 stars
This was perfectly pleasant, as Friday evening wind-down after work, accompanied by a cocktail. An amazing quality of recording, Vaughan’s voice is beautiful, and everyone seems to be having a good time. Lots of jazz standards here, if that’s your thing. It’s not really mine, and this album hasn’t changed my mind. An interesting document, but not music I would put on again by choice.
I preferred he music over the vocals. Oh dear. Not exactly what you're supposed to think of Sarah Vaughan. There was something a little pushy, a little extrovert about the delivery. Which is probably the whole point of being a singer. Maybe it was just my mood. I wanted something mellow to start the morning. The piano and gentle bass achieved this. I quite enjoyed the live aspect of the album as well It adds to the occasion.
I like how she says when she doesn’t know the lyrics
I'm not a big fan of live albums and this one didn't change my mind. I would have liked to hear the instruments more but they are background noise to Sarah's singing. Lot of the songs sounded very similar and I got easily bored before the 20 track album had ended.
Think count Basie spoiled me with jazz, not so impressed by this... She has a good voice though. Some of it sounds like it could be on a fallout soundtrack
The mood is set and underpinned by the vocals but it doesn't stray from safety.
Beautiful singing and some swinging jazz.
Exceptional voice, but just doesn’t hit for me. Overall Grade: 2/5
Not my taste
It was okay, I’ve never been such a huge fan of jazz vocalists, with the exception of Billie Holiday.
Fallout music. It’s fine I guess, she’s a talented singer but not something I’d ever revisit.
This is definitely not the type of music i listen to. She has a beautiful voice and its pretty jazzy. Not bad but boring. Great background music 4/10
mostly jazz with a bit of skat thrown in 2.5
Can’t do this one
Beautiful voice but so slick and smooth is made me very nervous
Did like some songs but others were a bit too hectic, especially the last one
It's a nice. charming live album. I just don't like vocal jazz that much.
I feel like I *should* enjoy this music more than I do. But it's just kind meh for me. I don't love the big band stuff, with the exception of the latin big bands. Her vocal are great but stylistically it doesn't grab me.
Listening to this kind of thing is like reading a classic book. I can hear the craft, I can see why people would enjoy it, but it's just not for me and I find it boring.
Y'know, I think there's only so much I can get out of this old-style jazz. I understand the importance and necessity of it as the groundwork for everything that comes after, but taken on its own it is just so much less interesting than 90% of stuff being made a few decades down the line. Maybe when I'm old the kids will be saying the same thing about modern music, but I can only judge what I enjoy here and now.
I love jazz but not this kind of jazz
Good voice, not my kind of music
Smooth jazz done well. If you like that kind of thing.
Shmm-bop-a-dee-do-wap-a-pa-dee-do-be-daa. Amusing part in it when the song goes wrong and not bad overall, but I’ll probably never listen to it again.
This was a decent album. As per usual I’m not really a fan of live albums but this one was acceptable. Not really a fan of music from the 50’s…
2/5 not my cup of tea.
It's not good. By her own admission Sarah admits she doesn't know how the song goes which sums jazz up really
This is another one of these albums that you know is highly appreciated for good reasons, but it is not for me I am afraid.
Not my cup of tea. What a voice though. Smooth as silk.
She undoubtedly has lovely voice and I like her sense of humour and unflappability when she messed up her lines on Willow Weep for me. Also she gave a nice shout-out to her contemporary Ella Fitzgerald doing some scatting along the way. Her backing trio basically stays out of the way so the spotlight can shine on her which is fine. However, the material that she sings is pretty piss boring and not very cutting edge. 1957 was one of the greatest years in Jazz history and there was some really innovative jazz released that year, eg Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners, Miles - Round about Midnight, Cookin', and Walkin', Sonny Rollins - Way out West, Charles Mingus - The clown etc., I hope those albums appear on this list because I'd much rather listen to them than this middle of the road stuff.
It is a jazz album that is 72 minutes long. I struggle with jazz, mainly because I am not cool enough. Also the songs were not that good.
Interesting, but not for me.
Nope
Honestly, putting aside that the genre isn't for me, I don't think she had a great voice. I appreciated the humor where she messed up one tune, but then she completely ad-libbed a second one after admitting she didn't know the lyrics, so I'm not sure what's up with that.
Aufmerksamkeit schwindet rapide nach anfänglich unverwüstlich scheinender Sympathie. 1.9
Otro directo antiguo.
nu prea mi-a placut
Very competent but also very boring live vocal jazz. Apparently one song is very funny? Lots of laughter after each line. Didn't get that. 4/10
Some ok, some annoying
I was let down by the couple times she said she didn't know the words and then filled the space with scatting or talk-singing. Plus I didn't like how her lower range sounded.
Still not into jazz but I enjoyed her wit and the audience interaction. Really appreciate that it was “off the floor” and they kept the improvisations and mess ups in tact. Fave songs “September In The Rain” “Honeysuckle Rose”
Restaurant music
Good voice but not for me.
Was I charmed by the old-timey crowd noise from intimate club setting and Sarah's ad-libbing on 'Willow Weep For Me'? Sure. Do I sometimes enjoy a bit of smooth jazz and pretend to be sophisticated? You betcha. Can I separate this album from all the other smooth jazz albums? And will I revisit it? Probably not, on both counts. My loss, I'm sure.
meh, way too jazzy for me, plus cheating because live
Live jazz from the 50s. I was pretty put off by her forgetting the lyrics all the time - the MC's intro says its being recorded and she'll use a lyric sheet, and yet... numerous times she forgot. Bit weird and unprofessional at any gig, let alone one being recorded that the singer would not know the songs?? Anyway the actual music was fine, she has a nice voice, though not as nice as Ella or Nina. Not a big jazz listener and wouldn't pick this up again.
She's got a beautiful voice. It's just not a style of music that does anything for me.
I'm not a fan of jazz.
The voice is very good but the songs are just pretty boring. Also, live recordings as always make the music worse.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: None Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: She's obviously very talented. I hate to use the phrase "I'm too young to really enjoy this", but I'm too young to really enjoy this. Wouldn't turn this off, but wouldn't ask someone to turn it on either.
Would have absolutely loved to have seen her in person! The end of "willow weep for me" in this particular cut was funny as all get up!
Nicht für mich
Meh. 5/10
i wanted to like it more. a simple jazz sound with nice classic vocals. however, the vocals were clearly the focus, but didn't really hold any passion for me. it also seemed over vocalized and playful in a gimicky way. I honestly would have preferred David Lee Roth's version of Just a Gigolo.
2.5 not my thing
This sounds ancient and is real one trick pony jazz. Was gonna give it a 3 but it started to annoy me by halfway through so 2/5.
did not like it didn't click for me
Not for me
Decent but uninteresting
A new experience. Not sure this is for me, although can appreciate the talent and skills of this lady. 1.5/5
wtf
not my fave type of music
i literally got through 3 songs before i had to call it quits. this is just not my thing. it’s terrible.
Was happy it was over.
I struggled listening to this, because I don’t dislike all jazz and I know she’s supposed to be a legend but I just didn’t like it.
For a live, jazz album this was the best I could have asked for.
Vocal Jazz album from before I was born. Not that it makes any difference when the album was made because, even though Sarah Vaughan is a very good vocalist with a great voice, I just don't see the point of this style of music, and find it a chore to listen to .
probably important at its time, but feels incredibly schmalzy/kitsch and outdated now
Eurgh jazz
nah
Hard no.
dont know
Actually a little boring I don’t really like live albums. The voice is good but for me is just background music…
Unfortunately, not my favorite. It's also live.
Fuck jazz.

I don’t really like jazz or jazz type music

I’ve never heard of Sarah Vaughn before, and I’m not the biggest fan of jazz music, but this album sounds like it should be pretty fun to listen to. I haven’t really had that many strong opinions on albums like this that I’ve already reviewed, but I’m hoping that At Mister Kelly’s will be the first album like this to really wow me. Unfortunately, I didn’t care for this album that much. Sarah Vaughn is a good vocalist, but I didn’t find anything particularly interesting or unique about her performance on this album. The music itself wasn’t that interesting to me either, and I didn’t think that they did anything to uplift the vocals either. These songs weren’t the most interesting choices either, so if Sarah Vaughn’s singing had more to offer, this wasn’t the setlist to showcase her talent. I wish I had some more insightful things to say about why I didn’t care for this album, but it simply just wasn’t my speed.
Surely she has a lovely voice and such. I don't want to say anything mean to the sound to start the new week...;)
This just really isn’t my style. I will be honest, I couldn’t even listen to the album in its entirety. I did think it was cool that at the very beginning they announced that the show was going to be recorded…funny how far we have come with live performances
Knap gedaan. 1 ster.
Boring
I don't like this at all. I've never liked the rambling kind of jazz that just hints at a tune without ever actually pinning one down. As for the scatting on the final track, nope, not for me.
Awful lounge easy listening jazz rubbish
Shoobedoobeblowmyfuckingbrainsout
Nope
Not my genre of choice
From the lazy rhymes to the put on sexyness. This album is a scat break away from a crime.
Best thing about this album is it’s short.
Jazz…
First listen
Over the top jazz, vibrato everywhere, why?
Not a fan !
bom pra dormir
I just can't stand the genre and I can't help it
Not my bowl of soup
Meh-not my thing. Every song sounds the same.
Yes she can sing but it's not appealing, just warbling sounds. Jazz in the background making me want to rip my ears off. The last track made me so angry.
