Beautiful voice. Honeysuckle Rose was favorite How high the moon sounded like she impovised. Love the live aspect of it, feels like I was really there.
Extremely unprofessional

Just not a fan of slow jazz. Or Chicago jazz. I'm more of a New Orleans guy.
She has a really strong voice. Think I'd much prefer a studio recording to this live album. As I'm not sure what the live aspect adds to this. However her voice alone makes it an enjoyable listen, "Be Anything but Darling be Mine" my favourite track.
Interesante. Ella toda diosa, simpática con el público. Me gustó.
This was a nice live classic album. Warm and enjoyable. 6/10
Outside of like wildly immature stuff there seems to be humor missing from a lot of music now. Like this was solid and also pretty funny moments.
Smooth and soothing. Not much beyond that.
Live jazzzz, lækker vokal, 50’er stemning, fløde
love
While I appreciate the quality and range of the vocal performance, to me this is background music. It doesn't make me feel "involved" or like I'm an active participant.
She’s obviously a great singer but this was just kind of boring. It was nice to have in the background when I worked and impressive that it was all presumably done in one take.
Smooth vocals, great for light background music.

"At Mister Kelly's" is the first time I've heard any Sarah Vaughan, and her voice is instantly captivating. This album, a 75 minute live set of Vaughan in a live setting with a backing trio, is the perfect showcase for it. Right from the introduction, in which the compere informs the audience they're all about to become Mercury recording artists, there's such an intimate and cozy feel to this recording. Tender ballads like "Willow Weep for Me", "Stairway to the Stars" and "Embraceable You" are delivered with care and precision, alongside upbeat tracks like "Lucky in Love", "If This Isn't Love", "Just One Of Those Things" and many more. The backing trio are made up of Jimmy Jones on piano, Richard Davis on double-bass (who would later play on Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks"), and Roy Haynes on drums. They display some fantastic ability, but really it's Vaughan's show, so the playing is restrained and minimal, leaving a lot of room around her vocals. While it works for the overall atmosphere coming across here, I'd be excited to hear Vaughan with the power of a full band behind her. Although the performances are beautiful, the song selections themselves (all jazz/trad-pop standards or showtunes) are much of a muchness and start blending together late in the set owing to the same stripped back arrangements. Every now and then, something breaks through: "How High The Moon", with its improvised scat singing proclaimed to be in the style of Ellie Fitzgerald, is both a hoot and one of the most stunning displays of Vaughan's range and technique. "It Has To Be Love" is another fun track, with an effortless vocal and Jones clearly having fun with some piano glissandos. All in all, I'm glad I heard this and it introduced me to some new standards as well as Sarah Vaughan's magnificent voice, but smooth vocal jazz still feels best suited to background music for me.
3.5….she has better albums , I think
“Ella Fitzgerald sings this song” The rough bits make this a fun album.
This is a six star album
I love how intimate this album feels. It’s warm, it’s inviting. It’s the album equivalent to taking a sip of hot tea. Sarah’s voice is absolutely incredible. Even with this being said, I didn’t find myself fully engaged by it. I’m not entirely sure why. I will say, this album would be great to bake to! It just gives that cozy feeling :)
This was ok, but I prefer Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday… This probably deserves another listen!
Not my favorite style but I appreciate the quality. If you’re into jazz I’d recommend this. It was beautifully done.
Great one-night record
Wasn’t bad. Mostly as background music.
Eh, fine.
I love the live album recording, it feels more alive and like you are a part of it. I liked the little error in Willow Weep for Me and How High the Moon, I'm glad they kept it in. Lovely trio, makes me wanna listen to more jazz. Favourite songs: Thou Swell, How High the Moon
Dinner party music, loved it.
A nice little album. Sarah's voice is pretty incredible and the jazz accompaniment is very pleasant, although a bit too minimal for my liking on some songs. Definitely a nice listen though. 6/10
I didn't get much of a chance to listen. I was expecting to really like the offering but found it just OK
I think that if there was only one jazz singer that I could listen to for the rest of my life I'd probably pick Sarah Vaughan. She has a beautiful tone and a broad range. I'm surprised that 1001 would pick this over her eponymous release with Clifford Brown a couple of years earlier. The latter received more critical acclaim, gets played to death on jazz stations and was apparently Sarah's favorite release from the era. Maybe because the great solos from the sextet took away from her performance? Back to this album, while I love her voice, a double album of jazz standards with minimal participation from her backing trio makes it hard to differentiate between the songs after a while.
Nije ovo Sarah o kojoj pjeva Alex G wtf
Nice ligtweight, chilled lounge jazz. Nothing mindblowing, but it was ok. The few moments of audience interaction were the highlight to me, ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah
It’s jazz. But it’s not offensively jazzy.
I can hear why people would like it, and the moments of behind the scenes where she "forgets" words or speaks to the crowd are very cool. Love her voice, but all the "American songbook" songs sound like relics from a bygone era, which I suppose they are. Enjoyable enough, but not one I will come back to
Easy listening, nothing really stuck out for me
Easy listening.
Smooth as can be.
A nice relaxing jazz album with a nice late night smokey feel. Sarah Vaughan has a voice very similar to the more well known Ella Fitzgerald. It's a very pleasant album, that's well sung and performed but lacking the gusto to make it a true classic. Had to seek out the mono version because I'm the stereo was full of dropouts.
Great voice. Can't decide whether the performance mistakes from the live recording make it charming or not.
Kuuntelin vähän hätäisesti. Muutama säväyttävämpi biisi ja kova laulaja. Ei kuitenkaan ihan suosikkijazzia.
She has a nice voice and the instrumentation is fine but I feel like there are better albums in the same vein that I would generally rather listen to.
Si cha sicher singe, klavierishh au ganz guet, aber es isch echt ned so mi stil de jazz us dere ziit :(
Take a time machine back to 1957, sit in a smokey jazz club in Chicago and hear the live musical act of Sarah Vaughn and her Trio (Jones on Piano, Davis on Bass, Haynes on Drums). Natural stage banter, a smooth backing band, and Vaughan's wonderful voice is a treat to listen to. I'm listening to the LP version here, which is significantly shorter than the CD version but gives the full idea, I think. She even shouts out Ella Fitzgerald at the end and scats for a bit, it's great.
Lovely, erfrischend, selbstbewusst, supercool und lustig. Sehr gut, 3,4
I am not much of a jazz fan but Sarah Vaughan may convert me! I really enjoyed listening to this. Love her voice & playfulness.
I get that it’s a completely facile take on a talented woman’s career, but I just wanted her to break into Feeling Good or My Baby Just Cares for me. Sounded like Nina Simone but without the stand out tracks.
Never thought I'd be entering my feedback on a 1950s live Sarah Vaughan album into a mobile phone app, but here we go. What to say? Good if you like this stuff, a headache it not. 'Honeysuckle Rose' is great. I really quite enjoyed this tasteful little set.
6/10
Sarah has wonderful control of her voice. I enjoyed it quite a bit when she messed up and was able to throw it into the song without really interrupting the flow at all. Pretty. Favorite track: "Willow Weep For Me"
Impressive sound quality for a live album. Not really my sound but a nice vibe.
Loved the live recording, beautiful voice.
Fallout vibes
10th November 2021 Listened throughout the day on my phone while having a chilled one. Liked this, bit of smooth jazz singing and I liked the way she scatted over saying she didn't know the words. Reminded me of an early Amy winehouse.
Interesting live show
This is the sort of jazz I would enjoy in a club or restaurant. 3.5/5
She's got an incredible voice, and some of the songs are really great, but it all blends together after awhile. Best track: How High the Moon
pretty fun!
In the Right conditions could be a great listen. Couldn’t handle it at the gym though.
Lovely classic
Perfect Sunday morning listening
Kelly’s Hero
woah her voice
Not my cup of tea
3.5 beautiful voice
This made me feel fancier than I looked. Anyway, jazz is a sore spot for me. Her voice was smooth and the instrumentals were overall pretty solid, but the vocalizations and improvisation and general melodic makeup of the tracks - I'm still lost on how to truly enjoy those.
interesting
Great voice and her ability and ease with improvisation makes her talent obvious. Jazz is not usually my thing but I like this
if you like lounge music, this is for you
Great voice.
Easy listening jazz
Smooth vocals, especially impressive that this is Live. Really adds to the date and character of it. I am not normally a fan of live albums, but this one really works for it. It's smooth and filled with an extreme amount of character.
Great voice overlaying smooth jazz that makes for a relaxing evening. That's all there is to it. Songs aren't particularly noteworthy. Standard music and lyrics. Recording pretty good, though there are some hiccups here and there for being a live recording.
Put on a tux. Pour a scotch. Light a cig. Would listen to this anytime.
Wholesome. Intimate.
Not my usual thing but good
Estuvo bien.
Live albums should not be on this list. It's an rather generic jazz album by singer Sarah Vaughan. Nothing wrong, nothing remarkable about it (Why is it on this list).
Good intro to Jazz for me. You can really get a sense for her personality, and what it was like to be at the show.
i love live albums. nice music, nice voice, goes really well with the last album i got lol (sinatra & jobim). it got a bit boring at some point and its not even long? but it was nice.
I love jazz- so pretty and relaxing to listen to. Sarah has a lovely voice and this is a really solid album. I'd never heard of her before, but I would love to add her into my rotation with Ella and Billie.
lovely voice. had never heard of her before...fun
Dece
The album's alright but if Sarah Vaughan thinks she can hang her hat at mine, she's got another think coming.
6.5/10
3.7 - Starts with an audibly nervous announcer informing the audience that tonight's performance will be recorded and that everyone should relax, which sets a fun on-edge tone to the evening. By the end of the second track, the singer has fallen off her chair and laughingly improvises a line, "I've fouled up this one really well..." She comes back with intense ferocity on the next track "Just One of Those Things." Vaughan's voice is a marvel. She improvises all the lyrics on "How High the Moon", with some solid scatting thrown in, which rounds out a frenetic, sometimes off-kilter, but assured performance.

Jazz. Canta muy bien. Un 3.
Smokey 'n' smokin'. Too bad Spotify's version has glitches, like a bad digital transfer. Will look for a physical copy of it, or at least a lossless digital one.

Lovely, lively listen.
Legalzinho..
Nett, aber hat mich schnell verloren.
Jazz isn’t usually my bag. This live performance is kind of cool, but it just sounds a bit dull to me. Sarah’s voice is clearly strong, but it’s very forward and a bit strident to my ears. Maybe it’s the recording but I’m just not into this at all. 2

I liked it but it was meh
Yes I like jazz
Past a certain point the music sounds old fashioned even to me. I just don't enjoy this style of music.
Fine, but not for me. Jazz is more interesting with lyrics, but just barely.
Beautiful voice. Intimate setting. I couldn’t help but smile during the more meta moments. However, there are parts that are a bit too tired and understated for me. This is a live album that would pair nicely as background music for dinner (for better or worse).
Last night, I had to beat my kid on the ass real hard because he bawled about spending the night at his grandmother's place. I smacked him with the back of my hand real good, and that sent him running and screaming into the kitchen to find Grammy. I felt like the boss (for once) and left Mom's house without saying goodbye--little brat. And then, dammit, Sylvie nagged me all during dinner about the oil in the staircase polish and about how it keeps ruining her night gowns, and I'd just about had it with her squawking when a blotch of mustard slipped off my fork and landed on my favorite tie. I had to go outside and smoke two cigarettes and kick the curb until my toe hurt just to keep from knocking the waiter's block off because of his several nose pimples. We made it to the club about two minutes before showtime (a single stroke of luck). The bouncer showed us to a little table by the bar, and Tall Joe Shmoe in front of me was blocking the stage and laughing real hard in this airy, hacking way, and I was pretty sure this was the worst night of my entire life. But then she started singing. She started singing, and every inconvenience of the night--every inconvenience of my entire life--just kind of slid off my back and collected on the floor in front of the bar. I couldn't see her, but it didn't matter. A voice like a blessing, a voice like the calming hand of God. I thought: This is fine, oh yes, this is very fine.
Yeah not my type but cool
this didn't do anything for me
sounds like the stuff they play at portillos
Nice voice and nice sound, but it’s definitely more like background music than anything.
Jazz, a bit repetitive. Good, but a bit repetitive. Felt like a drag going along the album.
She's got a pretty voice and the sound is straight out of 1957 but lovely. Love the accompaniment. Hearing Just a Gigolo on this album is kind of crazy as the much later rendition of that song by David Lee Roth is epic. Crazily it seems the song was originated in 1929, so this is a cover, too. Wild!
It is okay, but not exactly my type. I don't think I will listen to this again, but it was an okay listen. This type of music is good, but either this isn't the album for me, or I am not in the headspace for this kind of music for now. I like music similar to this, but this album I think wasn't the one
Good stuff here, not my particular jam, but good stuff for sure.
Cozy jazz but just not for me. I would have given this a 3, but her scatting in the last song drove me insane.
Love Sarah Vaughan's voice and this is a very nice live performance recording for 1957 but it's good music for background or to unwind but she does have better records.
Salonkikelpoista, pehmeää jazzia. Live-esityksen aikana tapahtuvat kömmähdykset ja yleisön kanssa jutustelu tuovat lisämakua tähän muuten todella unohdettavaan levytykseen.
Was ok just not my bag of chips.
Glad to have heard this, even though big band jazz singers are not really my thing
Not a patch on Ella
Great voice but this doesn't do anything for me. Nothing bad about it but I won't have it on again.
beautiful voice, really nothing that I enjoy listening to, giving it a 2
Lovely voice, bad recording. It's almost a shame that so many phenomenally talented musicians end up making jazz haha
This is a perfectly adequate soft jazz album, though it also doesn’t jump out to me as special (beyond the artist’s obvious talent). The live recording doesn’t seem to add much to the listening experience.
Great voice and talented but felt like I was listening to covers at a bar - especially when she was ad libbing about not knowing the lyrics
I can recognize the talent but otherwise, doesnt do anything for me
Beautiful background music for a classy jazz bar setting and honestly that’s about the only place I can see myself putting this on. It’s just too low energy and slow for me to go out of my way to listen to it. Sarah Vaughan’s voice is stunning and there’s a smokiness to it that I found slightly off putting if I’m being honest. I appreciate the talent though, it’s just not really for me.
A bit extreme if i say i hate it but i also dont love it The kinda music that plays in the background at a restaurant
Not much to say about this really. I'm neither a fan nor a follower of jazz and was unaware of Sarah Vaughan, but she has a gorgeous voice and she sings the songs beautifully, although not so much that it's obvious why this live album should be included in a list of albums I Need to listen to. Still, I'm a completions, so it's played through a few times this afternoon and, as chilled as this is, I'll have probably forgotten about it in a few days. Favourite tracks are Willow Weep For Me (even though it appears she messes it up!) and Just A Gigolo. 2 stars - nice but unremarkable.
I thought this had a lot of potential after the first two songs but found the rest to be lacking anything other than the same wailing and moaning with piano tinkling. Could for background music to a 50s upscale swarthy party
A beautiful voice, but just not the kind of music I'm into. At least I'm now aware of an artist I'd never heard of.
Not for me. I'm sure it's good for what it is but vocal jazz is not something I like to listen to.
1.75. Maybe the outside sounds were too loud on my walk, but the music was so down low in the mix that it just sounded like Sarah Vaughn was talk-singing in my brain and it wasn’t very pleasant.
oh god jazz kill me now wasnt horrible just not optimal 5.7/10
Nice voice, but jazz
Just not my flavour of jazz this at all. Can't really deal with the lounge sing-song stuff, even if it is a great voice.
I'm all for live performances but this one wasn't it
The ending to Willow Weep For Me was funny. For that reason, I will make it a 2, as I still don't like old jazz.
Not bad per se but I felt nothing. I want to feel something!
An okay album I will never think about again. I'd like it more if Tom Waits told dirty jokes and made bad puns for 5 minutes between every song. Real missed opportunity perhaps best explained by the fact that Tom Waits was 7 years old when this album came out.
Idk listening to this while building a Temu brand Lego castle didn’t hit
Good album, not one I’d go out my way to listen to again but overall nice
Im sorry this great just really really not my type of music man
-sehr getragen -nicht so meins -4/10
Jazz standards. To be honest some of the songs I recognize and have heard better versions. She references Ella Fitzgerald in one of the songs… which is a mistake in my opinion because it just reminded me of how much I would rather be listening to Ella. Not to say Sarah Vaughn can’t sing… obviously she can! I’m just not a big fan of her style.
Rating: 4/10 Nah.
It has been a while since I've had a jazz album, yet here we are again. I don't actually know if this is jazz, but let's not kid ourselves; it's 1957, of course it's jazz. Once again, an album which proves how incredibly dull life must have been in the 1950s.
It sounds like there's smoke billowing out of my speakers and I'm about to be approached by a gangster with a Tommy gun. Old style, strong vocals, and relaxed pace.
Some concert live recordd jazz, its fine
Was worried initially at the amount of scatting but some good songs and quite pleasant on the end
Beautiful voice but not really my thing
Sarah Vaughan has an incredible voice, but live albums aren't my jam. The noise of the audience and talking always takes me out of the music. I'm glad I was exposed to this because I would never have heard it otherwise, but I won't relisten.
Day 196 Beautiful voice and she seems an absolute sweetheart, really didn’t do anything for me though. Highlights Willow Weep for me Honey suckle Rose
It’s not really my cup of tea stylistically—very “smoky 1950s nightclub,” very supper‑club jazz—but you can’t deny the talent on display. She’s basically the Amy Winehouse of the ’50s: emotionally intuitive, casually virtuosic, and capable of making a line sound like nobody else could ever sing it. Even if the songs themselves don’t grab you, the voice almost certainly will.
Klar - Leg "at Mister Kelley's" auf.
I don't know what compelled me to do it, but I checked out the Expanded Version of this album. Google said it was best listened to in full, and that the regular version was very toned down and incomplete. I don't know why I listened to Google. This was not a very good album. Generally I try to listen to an album more than once throughout the day to really let it sink its teeth into me and let me appreciate it more. Often times, that works. On rare occasions like this, even listening to it once was tough enough that I didn't want to give it another go. Wasn't a big fan of the vocals, wasn't a big fan of the Jazz itself, just straight up was not a fan of this one in general. Not going to dock it for being a Live album, but when I hear things like "Haha, oops, not very comfortable singing this one, I'll try to do it justice though", I want to rip my hair out. I really kind of just picked a song at random for my "Best of" playlist. I don't remember what it was, and this album isn't worth the time of day to open Spotify and find out. It's just more boring Jazz that I didn't have to listen to before I died. All that being said, it's still better than some albums, and STILL didn't make me miserable enough to give it a 1. That should really tell you everything you need to know about the kind of albums I give a 1, but I digress. This was my weekend album, and I'm writing this one on the Sunday night before my next album drops in a bit, so by this point I largely don't even remember this album all that much in general, and probably for good reason. It was over an hour long of dated, overwhelmingly average Jazz music. I already don't love most Jazz music anyway, but exceptions have been made more than a few times. When this one doesn't even have a particularly high rating on the site, with people who like Jazz substantially more than I ever will, you end up with At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan. Sorry Sarah, did not enjoy this one very much. It had it's moments though, I remember the piano being kinda cool at moments, so I still won't give it a 1.
I know Sarah Vaughan is a significant artist in the Jazz world but this album does nothing for me.
Hyhhyh. Ilman fallout-viboja menisi roskiin.
not rlly an album but a good experience still. I want to visit this so-called "Famous Mr.Kelly's". First song was my favorite, and I liked that she had a lot of commentary--makes it sound like I'm sitting in the bar listening to her play right in front of me
This was fine, and I enjoyed the live element of it. But even for this genre I wouldn’t say this was a must listen so it didn’t do much for me.
I’m sure it’s fine, just not a huge live music guy
4/10
Beautifully sang but without real melody or direction. No disputing the importance of Sarah Vaughan as a singer but there is a pervading wish that the songs were better.
Ugh Jazz. I’ve been forgiving on jazz albums before. Not sure I can be so forgiving on this one. Sure I’m listening to a live version and one should be a little more lenient on an album such as this but what am I to do? This is a weak jazz album. A generic band Fall flat vocals. Songs with lyrics that could be replaced by words speaking of Christmas and it wouldn’t skip a beat.
Lovely voice and atmosphere - but failed to move me.
live albums are rarely good and this one's kinda close to being an exception. it still has all the normal problems most live albums do, but she's working so hard it almost gets past em. i bet it was incredible to be there.
Ok average
Look. It’s not bad by any means, but her voice wasn’t as impressive to me as others with a similar style, and I don’t feel like I’ll remember it. I do think I skipped the last couple but really it was just not standout for me.
I don't really like the way she sings.
Listened to it in the background, very soothing but didn’t stand out to me
Wanted to enjoy this more than I did. Jazz is complicated
Sarah Vaughan is a legendary jazz vocalist - her smoky tone is fantastic. I'm not sure this album was the best choice, though. It's patchy, under-rehearsed, and stops abruptly. As a historical document it is fascinating, but I would have loved a better example of Vaughan's prowess.
Great vocal performance but I have a hard time wrapping my head around music that predates the Beatles. Just not really my vibe
She has a great voice. Some of it is lowkirkenuinely just her going shoo-be-doo. Good background music. Last song kinda ruined it but not quite.
September In The rain - Long boring ass start (given its live i can look past it)(just about) Vocals are very good but the instrumentals are a bit tame and somewhat dull. Willow weep for me - Again a nice song with the same flaws as previous I am also concerned with the economic climate of the collapse of taiwan, see that bullshit was much more interesting than this song. Just one of those things - bit more upbeat than the previous, I appreciate hwo the instruments are more hearable, Thank you for listening to my critisism mr Sarash vaughan Be Anything But Darling Be Mine - Could very easliy be confused With the first two songs, if you were to merge one song and link it into the other I doubt anyone other than a fanatic would really notice the difference. Thou Swell - More involved instrument which I am a fan of Stairway To The Stars - I will not be repeating previous notes How high the Moon - Definitely my favourite of the bunch, upbeat and interesting. Overall this album is listenable as background noise, maybe in a bar but any other ways to listen to it would be utterly mundane, 2/5
It just passed me by a little, to be honest. She has a very lovely voice and I didn't mind it being there, but it was very much existing in the background.
I love Sarah Vaughan in small chunks but a whole album was a lot.
Kind of boring to be honest.
Ok, just not a big Jazz fan
Jazz isn’t really my thing. This album felt way too mellow for my taste, and for a live recording it came across oddly flat, like the crowd was more into chatting and clinking glasses than actually listening to the band. That said, I really enjoyed her take on “Just a Gigolo”, that one track alone almost made it worth the spin.
Wanted to like this more because Vaughan’s game for it and I appreciate her mix of self-deprecating humor, but this felt pretty generic overall. Just One of Those Things only one that felt distinctive to me
Live-levyt eivät itselle paljoa tee, vaikka hyvin laulaakin hän tällä vanhalta kuulostavalla albumilla.
Not for me
Nice voice but was a bit slow, maybe a bit more tempo I would have got into it more. Don’t think she deserves 1 star though.
Nice voice, nice winter relaxing vibes. easy listening.
Listening notes: Comfy but the vocal is too high while the instruments are not. Don't get the humor part, as usual. Why are people laughing? I cannot get what's fun, problems of having bad listening skills in foreign tongue. Also I don't really pay attention. By that time this could be nice, now I'd say it sounds like an AI generated nice, comfortable album.
Cool jazz cats in a nightclub and it sounds exactly what you think it sounds like. Vaughn has a good report with the audience, which is interesting, but I always struggle to generate much interest in rain in New York or other similar themes common to this music.
2.5 (only 35:36, live album in Chicago, 9 tracks, none written by Vaughan) Jazz I like 50's Jazz and thought I'd like this album more but just couldn't help but feel Sarah was mailing it in, she messed up songs, forgot lyrics, went into some unnecessary scat. I get it was a live album but either rerecord or do another take Maybe fans back then were more forgiving with their money but if I spent an hours pay or more on her record I'd expect better. Maybe this was all just contrived to make it seem more intimate (but then I'd feel played?) Other than this Ms. Vaughan's voice was loving and the playing top notch. The recording was sub-par by today's standards but for 1959 was probably outstanding.
Net meins
Not for me. Would no doubt be an experience hearing someone like this live in a jazz club but the record fell flat for me and the songs and arrangements were uninspiring
Muy buena música de ambiente
I enjoyed how live it actually felt complete with mistakes. Great voice. Not something I'd go out of my way to listen to again though.
So eine schöne Stimme
Sarah Vaughan has a wonderful, warm voice. But this is the kind of music they played in 2000's era Chapters and Starbucks stores.
I'm sure it was something special in the 50s
I don’t really understand what I’m supposed to like about this. I don’t like vocal jazz. It’s just always the same quiet, laid-back songs with nothing special about them. Nothing stands out. Always the same vocal techniques, always the same relaxed instrumentation, always so basic and unengaging. I guess the vibe is decent here, probably because it’s live. There’s just nothing to like about this besides that. It’s not terrible, but extremely underwhelming. 5/10
Can't really fault it for anything except the fact that I find it boring. Solid performances, just doesn't really do anything for me
Not for me. I can appreciate her great voice of course, but she doesn’t appeal to me as much as other jazz singers like Nina Simone or Ella Fitzgerald. Vaughan really uses her voice like a jazz improv instrument, and I wonder if that removes some of the human emotion from it for me. She seemed like a really cool person though.
Pitch perfect Starbucks ambiance.
I really thought i might like jazz, but so far what I have gotten on this list isn't doing it for me. I feel like a jazz singer should have a more powerful voice, hers seems high and kind of weak at times. Feels more coffee shop than jazz club jazz.
I get the appeal, but just not for me. She's an amazing singer with a great band, but I've never liked the sound of those vibrato-filled vocals, and there's not a vast amount of variety to keep it interesting, and that's kind of everything from vocal jazz to my ears. Just my opinion, though. Not trying to bash it, cause people who love this kind of stuff will be blown away, but it's just not my thing
Nothings really hits.
Obviously a good voice but I have no interest in the music. 2 stars or D.
Alright, not really my style of music, but it was ok
I found some songs interesting but overall, probably won’t listen again.
Good for what it is, just not my thing.
Haven't heard of Sarah before. It's a perfectly fine album but sadly I'm not a big fan of this jazzy style. It makes me sleepy 2/5
Nope, sorry, I listened to it in is entirety and did not enjoy. I get the warm hug analogies and she's got a warm voice and all that. But I'm autistic and I don't really enjoy hugs and a half hour hug is just torture. The last song I couldn't wait for it to finish.
Jazz album - this one wasn't for me.
I didn’t really gel with this
Well i just really don't give a darn.
Cocooned me on 125th
I fully appreciate the musicianship of this. The piano playing is exceptional. I also really appreciated how relaxed and confident a performer she was, dealing with moments waiting on the rest of the band with a cool charisma. But, this style of soft jazz isn't really my thing. I can imagine it would work better in the context of the 50s, but to me, it sounds a lot like something you'd hear in a hotel bar on holidays (think "Lost in Translation").
59/1089 This was a cute live jazz album and it was nice to have on in the background but it didn’t really stand out to me. Her voice is great, i love the relaxed and easy-going vibe but it feels like something that works best in context not through streaming, unfortunately. 2 stars or 38/100
Lovely voice and atmosphere - but failed to move me.
There's nothing like the compere telling everyone to behave themselves because they're being recorded (and that Ms Vaughan will be reading all the lyrics but don't get distracted by it. Do enjoy it. But I cannot stress enough you must ACT NORMALLY). As soon as Vaughan starts singing however, it's clear you're in the hands of a master (mistress?). A lovely smokey baritone and ice-cool confidence pervades the whole performance. 'Willow Weep for Me' has an almost arrogant insouciance, the piano interlude is dreamlike, and the spell only broken by some oaf dropping something. The album never reaches the heights of the first two tracks. 'September in the Rain' in particular has such a great vocal clarity and vocal line that finds it's way into unexpected but beautiful notes. It never matches that again and ends up explicitly parodying Ella Fitzgerald in prosaic fashion. There's a consistent feeling of admiration for her timbral perfection and her charm. Not so much for this as a great collection of songs.
I like be anything darling but be mine but i was kind of bored with the rest of the album
jazz. pas mon truc
Ehh... Can't bother to go through this, agree makes me think of fallout or a rickety old diner with 10 cent hot dogs
To be honest, this is better than Frank. But it's still Fallout music.
Started off great, then got kinda mid
I enjoyed the part where she said "I don't know the lyrics" and then proceeded to prove she definitely did not know the lyrics
Her voice is fantastic, just not something I would listen to out of choice.
Tried to listen. Turns out I do not enjoy “jazz phrasing.”
This kind of jazz isn’t my thing it seems.
Okay. Kind of bad recording made it hard to enjoy.
Why was this album released? She's obviously got vocal chops for a fantastic live album, but she doesn't know the words to some of the songs and tells the audience that before just skat-ing (How High the Moon). It's just not a very good performance.
It’s good but not for me, bit bland
Not my thing! Love the singing, struggle with the mix and dominant piano.
Love the album cover more than the music. It is cool how it instantly transports you to a certain time period. Still though I was waiting for it to end after a while I hate to say. Rating: 2.4
2- Stars (4/15)
I'm sure that back in 1957, this was groundbreaking music, but almost 70 years later, it feels sort of torchlight desperation.
It’s good music, just not my thing
This is going to be a unfair rating. There's a lot to like here. Sarah Vaughan is clearly an immensely talented vocalist. The band is understated but brilliant. The tracks are well written and composed. Despite all that I was bored after the first track.
-pretty nice! good to put on for a rainy day . not as many instrumentals - jazzy + ballad-like
This was fine…she’s a great singer, but this type of music just isn’t for me
Very cozy, but hard to get too into once you get past the first track, and it turns into solid but forgettable background music that I feel bad saying is rather dull. I adore when Vaughan adlibs songs, wish this album had more of that, otherwise the album being live is inconsequential.
Sarah Vaughan has a great voice, but the album is a bit too slow, and many of the songs have a similar pattern. Just didn't work for me this time.
I felt like listening to the same song 9 times in a row. Even if she's singing very well, it just can't save this album from sounding samey and boring.
This one left me a bit unsure. At Mister Kelly’s is clearly a big deal Sarah Vaughan live, doing her thing in an intimate setting but for me, it was more of a polite nod than a deep connection. Her voice is obviously incredible, warm and expressive, and she handles the material with elegance, but I didn’t feel pulled into the room with her. There’s a bit of distance here, like I’m watching something impressive through a window rather than feeling it firsthand. Some songs hit better than others, and I can imagine being there would’ve been magic but as a listening experience, I found myself drifting. It’s classy, it’s cool, but it didn’t quite grip me.
Listened on last day of holiday in Crete. Jazz is definitely not for me. I quite like the fact it's a live recording and enjoyed the moments between songs, but the jazz itself does nothing for me. Sure it's a great example of the genre but just find it hard to listen to.
..
quite a good voice, but not my thing.
nice enough
4/10
Great voice. Jazz just makes me sleepy
Somewhat relaxing, to the point that the music couldn't hold my focus.
Aa jazzia -> no joo, nämä ovat biisejä -> merkillapantavaa nautintoa -> niin, jazzia -> scattaus-orgiat.
Her voice is amazing, and some of the songs are catchy. Easy 3 were it not a live album. September In The Rain was a nice opener. Thou Swell was pretty fun. Honeysuckle Rose was good. Just A Gigolo was fairly nice, but I had Louis Prima's The Wildest! earlier and his version was a lot more fun. Still, solid album. Best song: Honeysuckle Rose
It was fine. Music would have been cool to listen to in a club filled with cigarette smoke, but oh well. I definitely thought the sound/music quality was really strong given the age of this live performance. I think I'm landing on a strong 2.
I bet this was great to see in a small club, not so great to listen to. I liked hearing another interpretation of just a gigolo. The musical talent is definitely here, but this just isn’t something I’m into. Strong 2/5
Not a fan of this slow style of jazz.
I don't like jazz, especially lounge room singing jazz...
Liked a few songs but not really our sort of thing
Just OK, Sarah has a pretty good voice -- but I wasn't really impressed by anything else about the record.
Ok sound
Her voice is ok, nothing special. Pleasant music but not my jam.
Maybe it’s just because the song title “honeysuckle rose” put me in mind of this, but her voice reminds me of honey. But, it’s used in service of songs I do not care about or particularly enjoy. I thought I kinda liked jazz before this project, and now it feels like I’m learning I hate it? I just have very specific jazz interests.
It’s an okay album. Some of the singing is great, while other parts of it are outdated. I don’t particularly like it but don’t really dislike it either
A bit boring, basically sounds like Ella Fitzgerald.
I don’t care much for vocal jazz. This 73 minutes felt like two and a half hours. She is very talented and it is technically good, but I just get bored.
Sure this 1957 live album sounds great and she’s a great singer. There are times when she doesn’t know the words and so she sings “I do t know the words, I hope you still like this song…doo bee doo doo boo” , or whatever. It was long and sorta boring. 1001 album worthy: nah - 86/158
There is no question from the album that she is vocally talented and can be an enjoyable listen for a song or two. However, the entire album seemed to last too long and consisted of the same type of music just different iterations of the same 3-4 patterns in different sequences.
Nice voice and high quality recording doing jazz standards(ish). I think I prefer a lot of the originals better though. Jazz just isn't really my thing. Might be nice music in the background at a dinner party or swanky restaurant.
Good background music
lot of jazz on this list huh? It's...fine, but not really my thing.
Sarah Vaughan has an excellent voice, but this isn’t really my cup of tea. I did enjoy that she improvised a bit and it felt a lot more real than most live albums
Really not for me. I can appreciate her voice is pretty remarkable but it didn’t do it for me. I did enjoy the way it was recorded in the nightclub though - felt a bit like I was there at times.
Great live louge recording. Love the music but really not a fan of her singing. Her vibrato is way too much and is off-putting.
This was not my jam
Never heard of it prior to listening; 1. September in the rain- Very cool intro, beautiful voice. Wasn't sure I would like this coming in but great so far. 2. Willow weep for me- Sarah seems very cool and charismatic. What a beautiful voice. 3. Just one of those things- cute song 4. Be anything but darling, be mine- bit boring Can't really be bothered to keep going song by song. They all blend into one which is good and bad. The sound of the album is consistent and pleasant but nothing really stood out. The ska thing was boring and annoying to be honest. She has an amazing voice, the albums cool. Its just not for me.
Nice a classical jazz singer. Never heard of her, but good to listen to once in a while
listenable but I didnt care a bit for it so it gets a 2
Lounge music?
eh
So so
Nice voice
Funny and entertaining. But not really my cup of tea.
It's (light) jazz. Not really my cup of tea.
Mediocre. Nothing to repeat.
Beginning and middle of this album was nice listening but the remaining songs petered out for me. I enjoy jazz, and I know there is a level of artistic flexibility, but this felt too off the cuff. 4.5/10
