I want to dislike it because the compilation effect removes so much dynamic range, but the tunes are too good. Swedish punk continues to be palatable.
Veni Vidi Vicious is one of several albums I thought about buying many times during the height of “I Hate To Say I Told You So” being on MTV/VH1 all the time. Very cool stuff, though it’s weird that a compilation album would be eligible for this list…

Well this is a first. This is a complication best of album based on two albums. On principle I shouldn’t listen to this. But I’m in a generous move and listened to one song. Gave me hives. It actually wasn’t bad, but this is a ridiculous inclusion. No live albums or best ofs! That’s cheating. Also per wiki, if you need to create a compilation album because your regular albums didn’t catch on that’s a problem.
Not my new favorite band, thank you though. Decent album, not a whole lot of variety but definitely a couple bangers. This feels like heist setup flashback rock? The type of band that I imagine I know all I need to know from one album; if I'm right, I'd be a bit annoyed if we got more than one on this list. But this one's alright. Favorite tracks: Hate to Say I Told You So, Die All Right, AKA IDIOT. Album art: Kind of a throwback stylistically but it's not very special. Font is decent. 3/5
Meh. Not only isn't this my thing (it's not), but I think these guys are quite a bit less talented than some of the other folks playing this genre (which is not my thing). Overall: boring and monotonous.
Solid, compact album. Tight rhythms and interesting guitar parts.
I asmit to having a preference for The Hives over The Strokes, bur the formula is almost identical. Solid guitar riffs with strong rhythm section driving a frenetic pace, and shouted/chanted rather than sung vocals. This only works when combined with short songs (12 in less than 29 minutes - an average of 2 min 25 seconds). I can't imagine a six minute song by them! Overall an epitome of energy and what punk should have been.
This is a compilation of the Hives’ first two albums. The music comes out of the garage rock revival scene and is clearly influenced by the British alternative scene, Britpop, and most obviously punk. The album is tight and exciting but doesn’t really stand out to me as pushing the boundary. It was quite enjoyable though even if the first track sounds a bit too much like the Blur’s Song 2
unfortunately, I can’t comment on this “album” since it’s not even an album at all. Great tracks throughout, however that doesn’t matter as this pulls from different albums by the hives to make a compilation. These tracks were not intended to be together in the first place and therefore to me means that I could not critique this as an album

As most of the other reviews, strange to have a compilation on the list. Also, I would've maybe enjoyed this when it came out, but just not my thing nowadays. Two stars because it is better than Kid Rock without a doubt.
I like the energy of the music but the singing is a little yelly for me. Maybe just my current mood but the singing is hurting my head
I am calling foul on this one. This is a US release that is actually a compilation of Hives first two albums and assorted EP material. The music itself is fine, good, solid neo garage rock. Not particularly original, there is a genuineness that is missing from some of their contemporaries. I will go with three stars as a balance between the solid music and my distaste for companions on this list
Fun post-punk power pop. Not familiar with this band, but this reminds me of Green Dat in a way. I would listen again.
This was a LOT for a Monday morning and it was not an album. Having said that it was solid garage rock. I will only give it a two out of five since it is not a proper album but it wasn’t bad.

I've heard their biggest hit "Hate to Say I Told You So" but I was unfamiliar with the rest of their discography. Easy to listen to and enjoyable post punk music. Songs are quick and high energy. I'll give this album another listen.

There are some five star songs on here, for sure, but it's a little too one note to get a five all around. Also, what is this, a compilation? The book compiler breaks his own rules once again, heh. Fave track - "Hate To Say I Told You So" is absolutely iconic. Fantastic tune.
I really dig the straight energy coming off this record. The singers voice is killer and the lyrics can be both badass and hilarious sometimes as well. Only complaint is that a few songs feel to quick/incomplete or lack a catchiness to them. 7/10
Sounds a bit like overplayed 70s retro that was popular in early 2000s. I get the hives may be early to that game, but it’s not great
Not really feeling their punk style. Not sure why, maybe just the singer's voice, but it doesn't catch me. Or maybe their riffs aren't as catchy, since punk repeats their riffs a lot. At least since it's punk, the album and songs are short Favorite song: The Hives are Law, You are Crime Worst song: idk, don't really like any of the songs

Brilliant, although very short. Super catchy, really evocative of the time. Sounds like a bunch of other bands that were about at the same time, but with an added dose of Swedish eccentricity.

I like the Hives and all of these songs. They were fun and I enjoyed listening, but they wasn’t anything inspiring about it. A very alright collection, and since it’s a collection and not an album, it doesn’t qualify at all for me. 1/5
some say punk isnt about the words, well here's a proof by contradiction that it really is. you know how guys like max martin or mattman and robin have lyrics that are just a little bit off? imagine those kinds of words transplanted onto punk themes on a replacement-level punk record. that's how you get "aka idiot". the hives certainly have the sound and feel of those turn of the century voidoid revivalists, and the guitar work fits the energy, but there's no richard hell charm. it ends up sounding like plastic punk. they try to to do something like blank generation on "automatic schmuck" and "supply and demand" but dont really say much, least of all something resembling the critique that the best of neo-punk has. i reallly should enjoy this more but i plainly dont. the best thing they do is raw energy and the album really only picks up on raw energy tracks like "untutored youth" and "hate to say i told you so". to be fair, there are moments of sonic experimentation in "outsmarted" "mad man" and "here we go again" but they really add little. it's parody punk with some good guitar bits. maybe it's better live, but im not racing to replay it.

I really like this album. High energy garage rock revival sounds like it was Strokes era which I can appreciate. Very high energy. A little bit too garage rocky to be a perfect five for me. They have their thing and they don’t really deviate from it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it I guess. However i like my 2000s garage rock bread buttered a certain way, and that way is influenced by 80s new wave and post punk. This is more stoogey. I can definitely get down with it, but I’m prolly never gonna listen to this one again. Veni Vidi Vicious is better

What a bottled perfection of a millennial punk album. Swedes with an attitude and a sense of humour - who would have thunk? This album specifically is also a bit personal - skiving university lectures to listen to my friend describe this crazy band callled the hives that they saw at Reading - and pulling out their disc man and spending a morning with an ear bud each listening and discovering this album. Good stuff. Also perfect for running to.

I was not expecting the first song of this album to appear on this list because it feels like a one hit wonder that shows up in 00s alternative playlists a lot. However, while nothing is quite as good as that song, the rest of the album is still pretty good. Plus I’m pretty sure this is the first greatest hits album I’ve gotten
How a band can sustain playing and performing full tilt like this, is beyond me. I call the genre coke punk because I always assumed they were working under the influence of one coke or the other. The explosive energy of the group is heightened by the album's brilliant production, which makes the guitars sound like their being played with razor blades and that the drums are sitting in the room right next to me. The constant force of the songs makes the already pithy 12 songs in 28 minutes, breeze right by.

Well planned and curated Stooges-derived garage punk with pop sensibilities. Zero dynamics and overall loudness is maxed out but that is a stylistic choice which also dates the album to the 2000s. Wouldn't listen to as an album but would welcome certain tracks inclusion on playlists.
High energy and fun. Great for short bursts but starts to sound same-y after a while. Short 28 min run time works great for this genre.
Nice. I like The Hives. Wait. Do I truly like the Hives? As I am listening through this album, I realize I haven't really heard many (if any) Hive songs outside of Hate to Say I Told You So. It now seems like there is a good reason for that.
Very Punk. Way more Punk than I knew. I hate to say I told you so was a big song when it came out but they didn't catch on in the states. I think these guys would be huge if they came out today.

I’ve kinda been looking forward to this… Hate to say I told you so was an immensely popular single for the band and opens up the album on a solid banger! In main offender he’s almost too screechy vocally but it’s still good (especially that infectious guitar riff). The guitars on supply and demand are very bitty things which I don’t like but the awesome drumming makes up for it. Other than the first song die all right is probably the best blend of sounds so far the verses boarder on dance rock and the chorus/ bridge are both proper rampages stopping for nothing! Untutored youth is a massive burst of anger like I get it but didn’t they have better songs than this? Outsmarted is a good rampage, slightly longer and better guitar work! Mad men starts by giving the impression of a brooding dark track that would’ve been really cool but but those dark and brooding moments are few and the song becomes an average hives rampage. The chorus to here we go again is epic the rest of the song…eh. A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T is very aggressive for the sake of it but I like it. Automatic schmuck has awesome guitars but the lyrics eh the chant at the ends cool I guess. The penultimate track Hail Hail spit n drool is a shortie like really short but unlike the one earlier this deserves a spot and works well next to the mental rampages that has been the album’s second half. The album closes with the hives are law, you are crime it’s not necessarily slow but slower than the others so it works well as a closer. It’s mental and for that reason it’s great, not necessarily music that’s great to criticise but still a 4/5.

Velocidad, frescura, rabia, ironía y algo de monotonía. Los The Hives son grandes representantes de su época, y consiguieron calar musicalmente, pues muchos de sus riffs y ritmos acelerados siguen aún hoy usándose bastante. Sin duda, un paso adelante necesario en la esfera del revival del garaje-punk para dejar atrás la ñoñería británica.

Well, this is just great fun. Untutored Youth is just the best 90 seconds, and there's a lot of short, sharp silliness to get you through here.

the hives are a bit of an acquired taste. i got around to liking this album with a few listens. the vocals are just okay--super punk and garage but too much. at times the vocals were screeching and it was rough. the guitar is without a doubt the best part of this album. it stood out on so many songs ("hate to say i told you so"!!!) and is what gives the album its rock genre. really, the hives are way more punk than rock! they lean so hard into the punk. also: this album name is GREAT, i love it!
As someone who isn't really a huge punk fan, this was a punk-adjacent listen that was easier for me to digest. The music was crunchy and rioting all throughout. This band has a lot of energy, and it shows through in their music. I found it to be a fun enough listen!
The was a generic garage punk album. Really didn't bring anything new, definitely would not rate it as a "must listen".
Good but to be honest the main vocalist is very lucky to have some talented instrumental band members because his singing is … yikes , but overall not too heavy and head banging fun throughout until I heard the vocals

Yeah! Grungy, punky, rocky. Like this kinda shit, distorted vocals, crashy drums and leading guitar strums. Fun. "Hate to say I told you so" clear highlight. "Die, all right!" is also fun.
I’m all about this
Listening to this album feels like someone enthusiastically re-gifting you something they forgot you gave them in the first place. The fact that they went to a lot of trouble to wrap it doesn't reduce the feelings of confusion and discomfort you experience when you've finished opening it. If anything it makes it worse. A gift card displays a lack of personalisation and original thought, but its often the best option. A gift of utility is never an insult. Being a cover band is good honest work. I know it's boring to criticise music for reusing common chord progressions, but come on... the entirety of the *opening track* of this *compilation album* is the one chord progression over and over, only changing it up in the most boring way possible in the chorus, (by alternating between one different chord, and the original progression), which stops at multiple points to highlight that chord progression, and adds nothing interesting at any other point. It's all about that chord progression. That you've heard done in more interesting ways in countless other songs. It does successfully set the tone for the rest of the album. If you've heard music before, there's no reason to bother with this album. You've heard it all before.
Not my favourite band.
I thought I remembered liking The Hives, but it turned out I was thinking about The Vines. This album didn't do much for me, felt like very cookie cutter garage rock punkish music straight off the mega music label conveyer belt.
Feels like generic pop punk but I enjoy that sound.
Fuuuuuck. This album completely shreds. It's a "feel your feelings" album that unites Gen X and millennials and I'm thankful for that. This album is the sonic personification of assertiveness. Does it have the absolute best track lineup on this list, objectively? Not quite. Is it fucking cathartic, kick-ass, and nostalgic to listen to? HELL yes. Hate to say I told you so (fave track), but this album aged very well.
Beloved of advertisers and sports montage editors everywhere, The Hives create predictable, comforting, post punk junk. Is this meritorious? To be blunt, it differs hardly from cynically crafted synthetic pop bands. Yes, you’ll tap your foot to a few tracks but feel guilty for having done so. As for deserving a place on the list, it is truly baffling. There are many finer albums out there.
Been a long time since I’ve listened to The Hives, just as good as when it came out. Mad Men sounds like an IDLES song

Uninspired. Some of the songs just sounded too much like The Kinks with a modern production and worse vocals. I also don't like compilation albums, so this album does not have a lot going for it. Aside from those things, there are some parts that have a nice groove to them, but that is the most positive thing i have to say about this.
When this album came out, rock music was in a bad place. Groups like The Hives emerged to bring rock 'n' roll back to its roots by mining early garage rock and punk sounds while adding better songwriting and cleaner dirty production. This is a compilation album which gives me mixed feelings but if Singles Going Steady and Hatful of Hollow can get away with it, so can Your New Favourite Band.
7/3/2022 - ALBUM #157 Today's Album: "Your New Favorite Band" by The Hives - This shit sucks. I feel like it reminds me a lot of what a lot of bands wanted to be in the early 2000s and what wasn't perfected until The Strokes, which is this really shitty blown out brand of pseudo-punk-rock that's going for this really crunchy aesthetic, but it just comes off so annoying here. Maybe it's just because I am sort of a snob for how music sounds, but this album's mix is just honestly unbearable to me. Everything feels way too overblown to have any actual tone to it, but it's also all placed equally in the mix so it feels super flat as the lead singer is just shouting absolute nonsense the entire time. The fact that the instrumentals feel super repetitive and generic doesn't help this fact either for sure. I mean, maybe there's a point to what they're trying to say here, but I just honestly don't want to listen to it. Maybe the generator thinks this is some sort of early birth of the emo music movement, but this doesn't really feel like it goes hard enough to justify itself as that either. I earnestly tried to give this album a few tries, but it is really hard to find anything musical about this at all. I feel like I might have heard one or two of the most popular songs here on the radio or something at some point, but that didn't leave me with the impression this was important and instead made me feel like it was generic 2000s early pop-punk and bad pop-punk at that. Overall, this album gave me a headache and it just feels like garbage they put on the radio at skating rinks to make it seem like the place goes hard when it's actually the most tame shit ever and I am grateful it is only 28 minutes long. Give this one a listen if you have bad taste lol Edit: turns out this is a complication album and it sort of clicked for me that this album really is not trying to be an artistic statement because it is literally the antithesis of that. Also, the last song on the album is just like really good and mixed perfectly all of a sudden and it makes me so confused Highlights: The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime Score: 2.5/10 one note and generally obnoxious 2000s pop-punk(?)

Quelle surprise à l'écoute de cet album. Nous nous attendons à un album de punk, et c'est bien le cas: tous les codes sont respectés. Les chiens errants sont bien de la partie, tout comme les colliers a pique ainsi que les cannettes de 8.6. La ou la surprise intervient, c'est que tous ces éléments de la punk sont soigneusement rangés dans un garage, ce qui nous permet de profiter, contre toute attente, d'un album extrêmement agréable.

They definitely did not become my favourite band after that. I guess I am just not a big fan of the genre.

Hate to say I told you so - continuation on the Strokes Is This It, and instantly takes me back to the mid aughts. Love it. Up tempo energy. Main Offender - I'm loving this album for the same reason I blasted Muse, but it's loud and I'm loving it. I think it's because there is a shift in energy/emotion. Probably also nostalgia. Untutored youth/outsmarted - I will admit that the listen can get fatigued listening to nothing but fast song after fast song without a break. Hoping the next song will be a change of pace and show some range. "Slowest" song was track three I think, Supply & Demand. Mad Man - this album sponsored by Molly. Album was a quick, messy, thrill. I loved it, but most likely for nostalgia purposes. 4/5

I am a huge fan of simplicity, and that's what I love about this band. Just the basics... three chords and high energy. However, despite the high energy and stylish uniforms, this band is flimsy and ephemeral. The Hives could be summed up in three words: Punk Rock Metronome. Sure, there's the contagious power of Hate to Say I Told You So and less-so some other tracks, but there's also a lot of filler. For example, 'The Hives are Law, and You are Crime' is suitable to burn time between bands or setups at shows. Also, it seems that some songs were released on other albums and then placed on this one maybe as a domestic release(?). Whatevvs. These songs are not expertly crafted and that's fine. My biggest gripe with this album is the lack of deviation. They've studied their influences. They dress like Kraftwerk and sing like The Ramones but what do they contribute to the sound? Roboticism? What happened to irrationality, incoherence of punk rock? And most importantly, the artistry in self-expression? Can you be a punk rock if you're a metronome? I don't think so. The Hives are a tribute band, and this albume is the music of 'enthusiasts'. But that is okay.
The first two tracks are well-recognized hits, but I immediately worried that I wouldn’t like a whole album that sounded like them. Luckily, the rest of the album was faster, more urgent, more raucous, and I wound up liking it more than “Hate to Say I Told You So.”
It takes balls to declare yourself everyone's new favourite band. The first and last songs were the best on the album but even though they have a sound I like, I started getting tired of it.
Call me a bee because I want to be in The Hives! This music is energetic with and edge…and organized. To contrast with the Germs the other day who are energetic with…and anarchical. I like The Hives much better. I’m not sure if this being a compilation album should have any effect on my rating. It’s seems to be a bit outside the spirit of the 1001 albums list. However, this is the release that made them well known. It doesn’t matter in the end because all I know is I’m going to come back to this one.

I've got so many good things to say about The Hives. I liked these guys before they really hit big (I'm not being a hipster douche. I'm serious) and seeing them become as popular as they did,albeit briefly, was awesome. This isn't a proper album, but it doesn't matter. I needed this today. I was in such a bad mood and the combo of the beautiful sunshine and the nostalgia rush as this rang out through my car speakers was just amazing. I wish they had put The Hives Introduce The Metric System In Time on here. That was always amongst my favorites they really should've just went with Veni Vidi Vicious. Oh well. This is just so much fun.Stripped down rock'n' roll with the right blend of bite, melody, and swagger.
The album's title did poorly at managing expectations. Catchy, not a bad listen, could probably listen again out of boredom or in moments of mindless listening, but this did not deliver.

Loved their stage presence and punk/pop singles when they exploded onto the rock scene in UK. Compared to similar contemporaries The Strokes, these Swedish guys were so much more fun and didn't take themselves as seriously, but probably didn't write quite as many great catchy pop rock songs, focussing more on energetic fast-riffing punk-pop.
I liked this type of music 20 years before this album was made but in 2001 there is one obvious question: Why?
The first couple of tracks have a lotta punch. This is the kind of album that would have been on my radar, had it been released in 1977 or earlier, but I don’t see it as relevant in 2001. It’s interesting that Wikipedia doesn’t mention any critical acclaim outside of 1001.
These garage punks really rock out with lots of energy. If they mixed it up a bit more like on The Hives are Law it would have held my interest more though.

It seems like cheating to have a compilation album on this list. But then, this album was always intended as a cheat. The Hives didn't make an impact with their first two albums so they just took the good songs off of those albums, smashed 'em together into a single album and re-released them on a new, 28-minute album. And it worked. They absolutely cheated their way onto the charts. But, cheating aside, "Your New Favorite Band" is a super solid, concentrated, distilled rock album. It's a lot of fun and, at under 30 minutes, it definitely doesn't overstay its welcome. Very enjoyable.
Reminded me of playing rock band. Too much if this style for my liking, i enjoyed a few songs then got a bit bored of it.

This is odd, it's a good rock album, but I felt something was missing, it almost felt like a parody at times, like the album title they seem to be super arrogant about being the best.
A super fun garage punk record. Not sure why a compilation album is here, but I enjoyed it anyhow. Probably should be replaced by one of their studio albums. Best track: Hate to Say I Told You So
Do you wish the Strokes were more punk and less good? Well hot damn do we have a band for you!
Swedish garage band but this is pretty much straight forward punk with its fast pace and attitude. It's kind of curious why this album was picked since it is a compilation of their albums "Barely Legal" and "Veni Vidi Vicious" and EP "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T". And why the band did a complilation without any hits? But, this album did reach #7 on the UK charts and was their breakthrough. Good idea. It's hard not to like a band with their singer named Howlin' Pelle Almqvist. The album starts with their most popular song "Hate to Say I Told You" which had a fair bit of play here in States and is the longest song at 3:19. This compilation is ordered in reverse chronological order and you definitely see the improvements as the band aged a bit with songs getting a little more raw and less refined as the album progresses. The names of these songs are classic punk, "Die, All Right!", "Automatic Schmuck" and "Hail Hail Spit N' Drool." I don't know if this album or band breaks any new ground but I bet they were and/or are great live. And, with 12 songs clocking in at 28 minutes with this fast pace, it was welcome relative to other, much longer recent albums I've listened to. Following the Ramones format can never be a bad thing. Can it?
Best song: "Hate to Say I Told You So" but it still doesn't bump this album up to a 3 for me.

As everyone says, probably should have been Veni Vidi Vicious on this list. I first heard The Hives from the Spider-Man soundtrack-which is some early 2000s ass music. I listened to some of it tonight after this, but most of the songs are not avalaible on Apple Music (incl. the Chad Kroger song Hero. What a crime) I think the Hives are very good for a 2-3 song stint at a time. After that they seemingly start losing melody in their songs. Why don’t they try a slower or more downbeat song to mix things up? Also did some Wikipedia research on the Hives. Apparently they formed under a different name in 1989? They would have been like 9 years old! Even when the band was started in earnest in 1993 they would have only been 14!

The Hives weren't my new favourite band. Weren't my favorite either. The Strokes were (and remain) the best band from the garage-rock revival of the early-mid aughts. The White Stripes have grown on me in the years since. And the Vines, Hives, and all those others are sort of just footnotes in my mind. This record gets off to a big start with the lead-off single. That's a good move, but where do you go from there? In this case, you go into 11 other songs that are maybe sort-of almost as good. But it doesn't take more than a few tracks to realize this is getting old. Also, not to be too picky, but I don't buy the guitar tone. It feels like a studio-applied overdrive. That has to violate some kind of garage rock rule, right? Studio effects? These guys can write charming and catchy wild songs. Good thing because it saved them from a 1/5.
Full disclosure - I liked this album. They are not my "new favourite" - but it's a decent punk rock album (by a band with a great punk rock name). The problem is that it's about 30 years after a bunch of other (better) bands did the same thing. I'm not sure the Hives really improved upon the genre or offered anything new to it. So, good album. But, worthy of the list? Meh.

Lots of great, fun riffs and tunes -Definitely heard "Hate To Say I Told You So" in 'Weird Al" Yankovic's "Angry White Boy Polka" -He gets going quite fast in "Untutored Youth" -"Hate To Say I Told You So," "Supply And Demand," "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T," and "Automatic Schmuck" all stood out slightly as great track, but the album is quite consistent.

So-so garage rock. It was OK for a couple of songs but they are very samey and the "singing" gave me a headache after a while. Hate to Say I Told You So was a classic but not much else here is particularly interesting. Overall, I was disappointed. There's much better loud rock music to listen to elsewhere, so I'm not really sure why this here. Also, according to Wikipedia this is a compilation!

I was already on the backfoot before re-listening yesterday. That said, "Hate to Say I Told You So" and "Main Offender" are still firm favourites.
A classic opening track followed by some fun punky happenings.
There are good punk vibes on this one, But it is quite boring, and the singer's voice is cringe. I like some songs of the Hives, but none of them are in this album.
I'm not the biggest fan of having compilation albums on this list, it just seems like a little bit of a "cheat" if that was a thing. I do think this is a great album as far as compilations go. The first two tracks are all time greats with "Main Offender" being one of my favorite Rock Band songs. "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime" is my favorite track I hadn't heard before. It had some fun mixing with the back and forth guitar. Just a good punk rock compilation album.

A lot of the songs on this album sound like the big hit single "Hate To Say I Told You So." They were very RRRAHH RAHHH RAAAAH after a bit, although a few songs did stand out. And on the plus side, each song was very short, got in and out to not overstay their welcome, I will give them that. The instrumental was interesting at the end. I dug that, along with "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T." It's interesting that it's basically a best of from their first two albums. I have a Kinks collection like this. I assume that the rest of the first two albums aren't any better. Sorry, but if you have to create a compilation album to generate a good album, it's not a good album. If the Hives were so groundbreaking, then put Veni Vidi Vicious (their 2000 full length debut) on this list. The problem with the Hives was/is they are so indistinguishable from the rest of the bands of the time. When a single would be on the radio I could never tell if it was the Hives or the Vines or some other "the" band (they don't sound like the Strokes but their sound was a punkier version of it). Sum41 have a great video by the way from back then where at the start their record producer tell them they're now the Sums because that's what everyone else is doing. For sure I like some of their stuff, it's just not overly unique or memorable.
I enjoyed the album, but it's a lot of the same song over and over (that's garage rock/punk for you). I'd listen again but wouldn't seek it out, which makes it a 3 for me.

I listened to the Hives on heavy rotation for a period of a few months in 2000. It was fresh, not too pop-sounding, and had just the right amount of scream from Pelle Almqvist. This compilation has some of their early best. A bit surprised to see a compilation on this list, I'd recommend Veni Vidi Vicious.
Certainly this album is not going to stop the world. However, for what this album sets out to do it does accomplish. This is not the first album you would reach for to listen to but it would be a fine accompaniment to play at a Friday night get together.

Just an ok album in my opinion. The hives seem like a modern punk band that tries to sound mainstream. Like a cross over of arctic monkeys and 80s punk. I don’t really care for it. The singer isn’t that good and the instrumentals are pretty generic. 5.1/10

More punk than I remember, and just good fun.
básicamente, un álbum ruidoso, corto y lleno de energía. exactamente todo lo que necesitaba después de un par de álbumes flojitos. me sorprendió que fuera un álbum recopilatorio de canciones pero al final fue un buen tipo de sorpresa. no sé si está es mi nueva banda favorita, pero seguro que voy a volver y profundizar más en su discografía en algún momento.
Fairly grungy. Interesting, but not astounding or particularly clever on first, slightly unfocused listening.
Enjoyable album, nothing earth shattering (and the strokes are better imo) but it's a bit of fun and at only 28min it's here for a good time, not a long time. 4/5.

At the height of the pop punk trend along comes an actual punk rock band. With more in common with The Clash and Minor Threat to anything the pretend punk bands had, the Hives fast, thrashy jangly guitar is a breath of fresh air.
I used to have a lot of thoughts on this band back in the days of the radio station 99x. Not so many these days. Enjoyable, but this sound was a recipe.
Despite all the likability of the garage-rock revival bands like this one, I don't wanna listen to this stuff anymore, although if a chance comes by – I might dance.
The Hives were one of the last pure energy and fun rock bands, and this compilation of their first few albums was a hit for a reason. Doesn't overstay it's welcome at a pleasant 28 mins, and leaves you feeling pumped.

The good: the garage-revival of the early 00's was a great throwback to simple three-chord plug and play raw rock and roll. The Hives hit their mark here. The meh: recognizing this is a 'compilation' for the sake of getting more airplay, the album is very repetitive. 3.5/5
I blinked and missed most of this. Sounds like a kid that isn't really a bad kid having a rant at their indulgent parents in the kitchen of a nice detached house in the suburbs.

Remember seeing The Hives in Brixton around the time this album was released. They were a breath of fresh air in terms of style if not in terms of music. They didn't really kick on after that initial wave of hype, but at the time they seemed fresh and didn't take themselves too seriously at all. A compilation of tracks from previous albums and EPs released with the intention of catapulting the Hives to commercial success. It worked (for a time), thanks to the Hives being stylish, having a sound that fitted the 2001 garage rock zeitgeist, and Howlin' Pelle Almqvist being a charismatic front-man. The album is fun, high energy and hurtles along at a pace of knots. 'Hate To Say I Told You So' is a banger, but beyond that there is little in the song writing to suggest that the Hives could be sustained as anything more than an entertaining late afternoon festival act. 2.5/5.
This is an unusual album to have on this list because it was a "story so far" type of compilation after the success of "Hate to Say I Told You So". It's there, perfectly named, capturing the buzz and heat of this group rocking Europe with their Swedish take on garage punk. But at the same time, it still feels like that lead single is the tentpole of this release and the rest of the recording isn't as mighty.

Blink and you'll miss it. Not totally sure how it manages to keep up the energy through the whole record, but you can never say it got boring. I can say that singer Pelle Almqvist's voice got a little irritating on certain tracks. Still, felt like running cheetah-speed through multiple brick walls. Call it a solid, solid 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Die, All Right!", "Untutored Youth"

The Hives do this sound about as well as anyone. Infectious garage punk that grabs hold and doesn't let go. Not sure about the wisdom of including what is basically a compilation album here when their regular releases repeat a number of the songs here but there's no doubting the quality of the songs included. Great stuff but loses one star because of redundancy 3 🌟

I remember when the Hives were on the radio, and seeing some performances on TV. Listening to a full album, the songs started running together about half way through. The album drifted into a tangle of static, yelling, and and incoherent guitar noise. I wasn't interested in the Hives when this album came out, and I'm not interested in them now.
They're correct, this is my new favourite band. Great garage sound and energy.
3.7 - Part of the garage rock resurgence of the early '00s along with the White Stripes, the Black Keys and others, but leaning heavier towards punk. This is a speedy, snarly record with amped up guitars and drums and plenty of pop hooks.
Don't know if this is my new favorite band but certainly a good album.

Is this a compilation? The panning on this first track is nearly unbearable. Mad Man and The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime are ok. I should like this, I guess, but it’s boring, bloated and overdone. Forgettable and unoriginal.

Therefore, N is inclusive of Early 2000s Garage Rock Revival. 4. The Hives are Early 2000s Garage Rock Revival. 5. Therefore, The Hives = N 6. Therefore The Hives = Music that is 100% absolutely my shit.
What amounts to a greatest hits album seems either a little like cheating or else something that should be more utilized to cut down on the repeat appearances by acts that don’t really justify more than one slot... This was fine anyway, though I feel like ther are a lot of other post punk, garage rock-y bands that bring more original creation to the table and probably didn’t make the cut for this list.
28 minutes and 12 songs, how is this gonna work. Very Very solid album. Feels brand new but also like I’ve heard it before. I feel lots of other artists have taken inspiration from these guys and I can clearly see why. Just shows that rock is never dead.

Comes out kicking and doesn't really relent. I'm not sure I understand the music, however. Supply and demand makes zero sense to me. Maybe there's something lost in the translation from Swedish to English. Whatever it is, AKA IDIOT is great. Good punk music.
Hate to Say I Told You So is a banger. AKA IDIOT is good too... the closing instrumental... on board with that too. Everything else is just a bit stripped down rock with good energy but nothing is really catchy and stays with you.

This started off strong for me with Hate to say I told you so and Main offender but it was all downhill from there. I think maybe I can only enjoy this type of music for a couple of songs worth and then it all sounds stressful and shitty to me. It kind of blurred into one after the first few songs and I struggled to pay attention or get anything out of it.
Hate to say I told you so was another banger off that Air Guitar compilation I've mentioned in other comments on this. So that has a special place in my heart. Really enjoyed this album, I was so in the right mood for it too. I feel must have been a last of it time before pop punky stuff took a nose dive in 00s
Great stuff. Raw, powerful, Hives. Always been a bit of a throw away 00s band for me but actually are really good.

This is a compilation album so it feels kinda weird to have this one listed instead of works like Veni Vedi Vicious or Tyrannosaurus Hives. Definitely should have just had one or both of these albums listed. Aside from that though, awesome collection of post punk songs.
