Reviews (page 6 of 8)
How a band can sustain playing and performing full tilt like this, is beyond me. I call the genre coke punk because I always assumed they were working under the influence of one coke or the other. The explosive energy of the group is heightened by the album's brilliant production, which makes the guitars sound like their being played with razor blades and that the drums are sitting in the room right next to me. The constant force of the songs makes the already pithy 12 songs in 28 minutes, breeze right by.
Well planned and curated Stooges-derived garage punk with pop sensibilities. Zero dynamics and overall loudness is maxed out but that is a stylistic choice which also dates the album to the 2000s. Wouldn't listen to as an album but would welcome certain tracks inclusion on playlists.
Simple, high energy, fun, punk. No real wow factor for me. Socks are not blown off.
the hives are a bit of an acquired taste. i got around to liking this album with a few listens. the vocals are just okay--super punk and garage but too much. at times the vocals were screeching and it was rough. the guitar is without a doubt the best part of this album. it stood out on so many songs ("hate to say i told you so"!!!) and is what gives the album its rock genre. really, the hives are way more punk than rock! they lean so hard into the punk. also: this album name is GREAT, i love it!
As someone who isn't really a huge punk fan, this was a punk-adjacent listen that was easier for me to digest. The music was crunchy and rioting all throughout. This band has a lot of energy, and it shows through in their music. I found it to be a fun enough listen!
Good but to be honest the main vocalist is very lucky to have some talented instrumental band members because his singing is … yikes , but overall not too heavy and head banging fun throughout until I heard the vocals
Enjoyed some of it.
i know one song
Might listen more than once
Killer garage rock. The Hives are really slept on.
When this album came out, rock music was in a bad place. Groups like The Hives emerged to bring rock 'n' roll back to its roots by mining early garage rock and punk sounds while adding better songwriting and cleaner dirty production. This is a compilation album which gives me mixed feelings but if Singles Going Steady and Hatful of Hollow can get away with it, so can Your New Favourite Band.
Contrairement à ce qu'indique le nom de l'album, le groupe que forme ces gentils messieurs ne deviendra votre préféré que si vous êtes fan d'Imagine Dragons.
Ska ett samlingsalbum var med här? 3.5
Decent, but nothing really grabbed me
meh
Guys…a compilation is not an album! Different moments…different eras! Different inspiration streams!
High energy garage rock, pretty fun listen
They definitely did not become my favourite band after that. I guess I am just not a big fan of the genre.
straightahead raucous garage rock. like the soundtrack to Burnout Paradise
oh god this is inextricably linked with 9th grade. The first two tracks are great and then it turns into manic dandy worhols
It takes balls to declare yourself everyone's new favourite band. The first and last songs were the best on the album but even though they have a sound I like, I started getting tired of it.
Remember how fresh these guys sounded when they came out? The music is as good as it ever was, but 20 years later the Hives come off as less a fully formed band than a fun, but highly derivative punk act. It's a great, entertaining listen, but apparently I'm less easily impressed now. Fave Songs: Die, All Right!; The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime; Here We Go Again; Automatic Schmuck; Hate to Say I Told You So
Really enjoyed it at the start, but the songs all blur into each other.
Bold of you to assume you'd be my new favourite anything. Cheeky buggers.
Compilation. Not sure why it's here.
Verse. Chorus. Verse. Chorus. etc etc. Its fun but it has a sell by date even at its sparse 28 minutes
The album's title did poorly at managing expectations. Catchy, not a bad listen, could probably listen again out of boredom or in moments of mindless listening, but this did not deliver.
An early "hits" collection. Don't think this should be in the 1001 list but - it does feature some fantastic tunes.
Gets a third star for Untutored Youth.
Loved their stage presence and punk/pop singles when they exploded onto the rock scene in UK. Compared to similar contemporaries The Strokes, these Swedish guys were so much more fun and didn't take themselves as seriously, but probably didn't write quite as many great catchy pop rock songs, focussing more on energetic fast-riffing punk-pop.
Reminded me of playing rock band. Too much if this style for my liking, i enjoyed a few songs then got a bit bored of it.
Not bad, dripping in the 2000s punk that I basically heard since I can remember
Is an anthology... Swedish garage rockers go Rock'N'Roll. (5/10) FT: Hate to Say I Told You So
This is odd, it's a good rock album, but I felt something was missing, it almost felt like a parody at times, like the album title they seem to be super arrogant about being the best.
Shouty. Not bad
6/10 all of the soungs sounded the same but it wasnt bad
6/10. Pretty good for what it is.
fun
Very much liked this at the time but in reality there is only one stand out song and it's a good song.
Not bad, not great and not my new favourite band.
Bah, another ex-1001 album. See http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex It niggles me that this is a compilation album for UK marketing purposes - wouldn't Veni Vedi Vicious have been a better choice? I was already on the backfoot before re-listening yesterday. That said, "Hate to Say I Told You So" and "Main Offender" are still firm favourites.
A classic opening track followed by some fun punky happenings.
I'm not the biggest fan of having compilation albums on this list, it just seems like a little bit of a "cheat" if that was a thing. I do think this is a great album as far as compilations go. The first two tracks are all time greats with "Main Offender" being one of my favorite Rock Band songs. "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime" is my favorite track I hadn't heard before. It had some fun mixing with the back and forth guitar. Just a good punk rock compilation album.
3.5 stars
A lot of the songs on this album sound like the big hit single "Hate To Say I Told You So." They were very RRRAHH RAHHH RAAAAH after a bit, although a few songs did stand out. And on the plus side, each song was very short, got in and out to not overstay their welcome, I will give them that. The instrumental was interesting at the end. I dug that, along with "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T." It's interesting that it's basically a best of from their first two albums. I have a Kinks collection like this. I assume that the rest of the first two albums aren't any better. Anyway, I'd give it a middle of the road, but there were some good bits in there, probably about half of the album. Favorites" "Hate To Say I Told You So" "Die, All Right!" "A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T" "The Hives Are Law , You Are Crime"
Sorry, but if you have to create a compilation album to generate a good album, it's not a good album. If the Hives were so groundbreaking, then put Veni Vidi Vicious (their 2000 full length debut) on this list. The problem with the Hives was/is they are so indistinguishable from the rest of the bands of the time. When a single would be on the radio I could never tell if it was the Hives or the Vines or some other "the" band (they don't sound like the Strokes but their sound was a punkier version of it). Sum41 have a great video by the way from back then where at the start their record producer tell them they're now the Sums because that's what everyone else is doing. For sure I like some of their stuff, it's just not overly unique or memorable.
I enjoyed the album, but it's a lot of the same song over and over (that's garage rock/punk for you). I'd listen again but wouldn't seek it out, which makes it a 3 for me.
nice modern punk album
Certainly this album is not going to stop the world. However, for what this album sets out to do it does accomplish. This is not the first album you would reach for to listen to but it would be a fine accompaniment to play at a Friday night get together.
Mér fundust þeir lala upp úr aldamótum, og mér finnast þeir lala í dag. Alveg hægt að hlusta, stundum stuð, ekki leiðinlegt, en sénsinn að ég myndi sækjast eftir því sérstaklega. (Tvær og hálf)
Bit bland tbh. Like most other artists of their era. I think I need to book so that I can find out why some artists are included and can contextualise.
Fairly grungy. Interesting, but not astounding or particularly clever on first, slightly unfocused listening.
pretty solid alt/punk.
I used to have a lot of thoughts on this band back in the days of the radio station 99x. Not so many these days. Enjoyable, but this sound was a recipe.
Despite all the likability of the garage-rock revival bands like this one, I don't wanna listen to this stuff anymore, although if a chance comes by – I might dance.
A compilation album. Great tracks but can't rate it as if it was a studio album so I'll go straight down the middle with a 3
Des bons bangers, mais overal du rock très correct. Rien de groundbraking, ça sonne très inspiré par le brit rock des années 90s 00s.
The good: the garage-revival of the early 00's was a great throwback to simple three-chord plug and play raw rock and roll. The Hives hit their mark here. The meh: recognizing this is a 'compilation' for the sake of getting more airplay, the album is very repetitive. 3.5/5
I dig it, but some songs were a little much
This is an unusual album to have on this list because it was a "story so far" type of compilation after the success of "Hate to Say I Told You So". It's there, perfectly named, capturing the buzz and heat of this group rocking Europe with their Swedish take on garage punk. But at the same time, it still feels like that lead single is the tentpole of this release and the rest of the recording isn't as mighty.
Blink and you'll miss it. Not totally sure how it manages to keep up the energy through the whole record, but you can never say it got boring. I can say that singer Pelle Almqvist's voice got a little irritating on certain tracks. Still, felt like running cheetah-speed through multiple brick walls. Call it a solid, solid 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Die, All Right!", "Untutored Youth"
Cool ig
The Hives do this sound about as well as anyone. Infectious garage punk that grabs hold and doesn't let go. Not sure about the wisdom of including what is basically a compilation album here when their regular releases repeat a number of the songs here but there's no doubting the quality of the songs included. Great stuff but loses one star because of redundancy 3 🌟
3.7 - Part of the garage rock resurgence of the early '00s along with the White Stripes, the Black Keys and others, but leaning heavier towards punk. This is a speedy, snarly record with amped up guitars and drums and plenty of pop hooks.
Good garage rock renaissance but not my new favourite band
What amounts to a greatest hits album seems either a little like cheating or else something that should be more utilized to cut down on the repeat appearances by acts that don’t really justify more than one slot... This was fine anyway, though I feel like ther are a lot of other post punk, garage rock-y bands that bring more original creation to the table and probably didn’t make the cut for this list.
28 minutes and 12 songs, how is this gonna work. Very Very solid album. Feels brand new but also like I’ve heard it before. I feel lots of other artists have taken inspiration from these guys and I can clearly see why. Just shows that rock is never dead.
Simple but good rock by a swedish band that sounds like British punk XD
Comes out kicking and doesn't really relent. I'm not sure I understand the music, however. Supply and demand makes zero sense to me. Maybe there's something lost in the translation from Swedish to English. Whatever it is, AKA IDIOT is great. Good punk music.
Hate to Say I Told You So is a banger. AKA IDIOT is good too... the closing instrumental... on board with that too. Everything else is just a bit stripped down rock with good energy but nothing is really catchy and stays with you.
imponerende punkrock
This started off strong for me with Hate to say I told you so and Main offender but it was all downhill from there. I think maybe I can only enjoy this type of music for a couple of songs worth and then it all sounds stressful and shitty to me. It kind of blurred into one after the first few songs and I struggled to pay attention or get anything out of it.
Decent! I’ve heard some of these songs
Not really though
Not sure why this album is on this list. It's not bad but it's not special. It doesn't have a distinct flavor and it's incredibly dated. Thought this came out during the garage punk era of the 80's-90's and it's from 2001? Seems like a very weird album to have on this list. I didnt hate it, so its a 3 star but it's a weird album to say "you need to listen to this before you die"
I really don’t like the hives.
Not my preferred style. Some songs that I enjoyed, especially at the beginning of the record. Nothing that blew me out of the water though. Would give this maybe two stars - this keeping in mind that I am using this rating system to rate all time classic albums, so among those albums, it's two stars for me.
Not my favorite. Also, kinda samey.
One of many "The...." neo garage bands of the early 00s indistinguishable from many of the others, not bad but not worthy of a second listen either
The first two tracks really set up the album for high expectations that I don’t unfortunately think it lives up to. The high points are nice to revisit. I’m not very compelled to explore more.
Started off strong with Hate To Say I Told You So but I was admittedly checked out by the end. Not bad but nothing to write home about.
While I applaud their efforts to keep rock alive, this is mostly screaming with very little subtlety.
meh... 1st track is embedded in my memory but nothing else.
Overall: 4/10 Not only are The Hives horribly boring, but this is a compilation album. I just didn't really enjoy this very much and I would have rather listened to one of their actual studio albums. Fav Song: Hate to Say I Told You So
Not your new favourite band. Itunes ass music. The Strokeds. Man this guys yelly megaphone vocals get annoying fast. They had one big hit on her and the rest are just like mediocre copies of that one hit. 3/10
Unimpressed. It was fine, but kind of boring. Nothing was interesting, nothing I want to listen to again, just plain boring.
Didn't really hear anything special. Not bad, just boring.
Another day, another brit rock album. This fine ... but it could have been from any number of brit rock bands. And this is a compilation? Yuck.
I enjoyed it the first few songs then it progressively went downhill
eh
Everyone had this when it came out. It is not that great, I remember one song. The one on the radio, the popular one. It was a product of the time. It feels like it was a manufactured atheistic concept like what someone would think 60’s garage rock would sound like without having heard any. There were a handful of bands that came out around this time like, Jet, the Strokes, the White Stripes, the Walkmen, maybe even the Libertines… like fingers of the same hand. I could be wrong I’m not going to fact check myself you can use AI if you like. I am gonna just go listen to the Byrds, small faces or the Troggs.
It’s ok. I can see maybe having liked the Hives when I was in my teens or early 20’s. But listening for the first time now, in my mid-40’s, it’s just ok.
Presumptuous
Nothing new here.
Hey! It's that one song that was used in every "cool" commercial in the early '00's. Corporate music used when corporations want to advertise something as edgy and "in your face".
This feels every bit like the compilation album it is, rather than a coherent piece of work. Their sound is bland as fuck in the poppier parts of the album. In the tracks where they're closer to the punk part of their roots, it at least feels like they've got *some* kind of character to them, which just about whisks it out of the 1 star doldrums for me. As far as I'm concerned, it really just doesn't hang with the calibre of album we've mostly had until now, nor is it on a meaningful level of cultural relevance in the way that saved Licensed to Ill in terms of my respect.
A punk album that isn't really punk. It has the sound but not the anger. Although it isn't a bad album it doesnt give me what I need from a "punk" album. I could see these songs being used in a commercial to great effect.
Are you fr with a compilation…
I’ll give jt two because there was instruments playing and it was not jazz but it made my head hurt
Uninspiring. Nothing new or particularly original.
I was expecting to like this album, but for some reason it didn't quite tick the boxes.
Definitely not my new favourite band
the same slop on repeat for 30min
Nope. Punk leaning garage rock raw. Never had been my jam
Fine but a bit boring. Didn’t think this album was something very special.
Some good songs but overall a bit samey
Mmmmm acá la verdad simplemente no son mi gusto musical por completo. No creo que sea malo como tal. Pero definitivamente no volvería a escucharlos
This was not my new favourite band. Found it loud and abrasive.
A compilation, huh? That explains a lot. Almost all these songs sound and feel exactly the same. And before you punks come in here like “tHats PaRt of tHe GeNRE” I KNOW ITS JUST NOT FOR ME. It wasn’t bad to listen to at all, just boring. Which is almost worse than being flat-out bad. It sounded fine for sure, the production was good and the band itself was tight, but it’s the most generic punk revival sound you could imagine. I can give them a pass because this is basically just a sampler for them and their label to introduce themselves to new audiences. This means the “weird” stuff (aka the good stuff) is hidden in their studio albums. It got more interesting in the second half at least. The instrumental outro was fun. Favorite track: Here We Go Again
No me gustó, no es mi estilo de música y aunque estoy abierta a nuevas cosas este no me gustó
Er, what is a compilation album doing on here? And a compilation album put together after a grand total of, checks notes... TWO Hives albums had been released. Either of Veni Vidi Vicious or Tyrannosaurus Hives would have made for reasonable enough inclusions. This is taking the piss and wasting a space in the book, as fun as a couple of the songs are.
Se me hizo parecido a Blur y soy más de Oasis faf
sympathes
to jest blur pomieszany z oasis ale gorszy jakos tak dluzy mi sie ten album mimo ze jest krotki troche darcie pizdy w pewnym momencie no na pewno to nie bedzie my new favourite band od 5 piosenki totalne darcie mordy no me gusta to here we go again nawet ok mocno sredni
Favorite track(s): Hate to Say I Told You So A bit more entertaining than some similar albums on this list, but certainly not new favourite band material.
Loud, brash and rather annoying.
When this music emerged it didn't really catch me as a spin-off of punk. It's catchy and irreverent and the Hives are maybe a bit more interesting than some of their ilk. I didn't mind this album but I don't feel converted to the genre.
A bit curious to get a compilation on here and not a studio album. Whatever - I thought I might recognize the first song, but Hate To Say I Told You So doesn't ring any bells, and it's also the kind of generic garage rock I tend not to like. Very simple progression repeated for most of the song, supported by shouty vocals. Main Offender, track 2, has a similar sound but at least opens with a more interesting riff. A couple tracks later Die, All Right opts for a quicker tempo and the collection benefits from it. Untutored Youth is punkier and I don't care for it. Best of the rest: probably Here We Go Again, or The Hives Are Law. There's some good moments here, but I don't really get why this caught on, a lot of it feels like someone took punk and stripped it of anything authentic. NOT my new favourite band.
I saw The Hives live when they opened for Arctic Monkeys a few years ago, but I don’t know much of their work. Pretty catchy stuff! Fav song is ‘Hate To Say I Told You So’.
Not my favourite band.
Not my new favorite band. First and last songs are good, middle is a bunch of noisy alt-rock. I guess I give the band a little credit for sticking to British punk roots but more annoying than original. Also, not thrilled a compilation album makes the list and that the band released it in hopes to gain popularity faster. Seems pretty anti-punk. All in all, the honey just ain't sweet enough from the Hives...1.63 stars.
That's an album that certainly has a lot of energy. I'm often impressed how punk bands can rip through songs that are essentially a 2 minute sprint. The Hives certainly appear to be skilled musicians as the songs are all tight and pretty well arranged. While I appreciate the sentiment it unfortunately sounds like just another punk album to me. It's not that it's bad, it's just that the appeal of the genre only last so long. A couple tracks for a couple minutes is fine, but surprisingly even at 28 minutes its a little too much of it and I get burned out. I applaud the short playtime and as much as I can respect a band like The Hives its just not in my wheelhouse for any kind of casual listening 99% of the time. 2.36 stars
Did not like 2
Relativ langwiilig eifach
Definitely not my new favorite band. Not even a band I enjoyed. Very abrasive in a bad way.
So a 28min promotional album capturing the first 3 years of the band makes the cut? I’ve never got The Hives hype. On paper I should enjoy this, but it just feels like the empty soul of something it’s trying to emulate.
Favorite Song: Hate To Say I Told You So
I did enjoy this but I hate greatest hits albums as a concept + thinks it's bogus they'd include one here
in the early 2000s your options as a rock band were to either whinny and moan, be as meatheaded and angsty as possible, or shamelessly ape 70s Real Rawk. the last category may have been the most respectable at the time, but nowadays has aged rather dully. these songs are alright, but they really suffer from almost every trope of garage rock revival that i dislike. better when it skews on the punk end (Untutored Youth). deserves to be one of the 1001? i can only assume this compilation was put in because this was in the first edition, which came out before streaming and digital downloads became prominent. i'm pretty sure this is a UK release meant to debut The Hives since their first few albums weren't released over there. at least i hope that's the case, because if we open the door to compilations being on here, boy oh boy does that make this list significantly worse than what i give it credit for. i don't really care about The Hives but i suppose you could slap an album of theirs on here without causing any problems. not a compilation like this, though. that's just foolish. maybe on that merit this gets the honor of being the least deserving entry on the list
It was ok. Personally it was a bit too angsty, I could feel myself getting more wound up as the album went on. To fully enjoy it I would have to be in a suitable mood and location e.g. in a car on a road with no other traffic, and when I've been slightly inconvenienced by someone or something. I could then thrash about safe in the knowledge I'm not going to kick the cat, or throw a bottle through the TV screen.
Album 122. Your New Favourite Band (https://open.spotify.com/album/1jJiFQfBwu3Ifz8RuPdk0A?si=69UziKjNRXKOAdfrYX9YOg)— The Hives (2001) It was super fun to listen to this album today 'cause it was a perfect fit. But objectively, it's forgettable and the complete opposite of uniqueness. I heard dozens of garage rock albums like this. Yeah, these guys were early makers of garage rock and so what 2/5 No liked songs
Eh, they are fine I guess? The kind of music horrid henry listens to I saw that this is a best of album and none of the songs really stood out for me. They would be fun to see live Unfortunately they're not my new favourite band, but I respect the effort.
Meh, sounds like generic indie rock to me
Pretty standard punk rock there. It was okay but nothing to write home about
This kind of garage punk is right up my alley. It's loud, punchy, noisy, punctuated by feedback, rockin' blah blah blah. But why listen to this instead of Mudhoney, or Ty Segall, or Obits/Hot Snakes, or one of several incarnations of The Oh Sees that does this just as loudly, just as noisily, but with *real abandon*? It's good, really well done stuff, but I couldn't pick out any of the songs as distinctive. It feels like punk energy as a product. Maybe because it's a compilation? Anyhow, no real high points, no low points. I'd be willing to give another album a go and hope it's got more going on than this, but I couldn't convince myself that another listen would give me more. 2.5 rounding down.
Punk is a bit to hard for me Song I like: the hive are law you are crime
Listened Before? N Meh. So much of this early-2000s stuff didn't hold up. Too hipster for their own good. I'm good. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Main Offender
68. almost good
The Hive make lotta noise in the songs, but do lack melody. Perhaps the first track isn't bad, but for some 80% of the playtime I felt as though their sound consumed more of me than it gave. Isn't too cool; I'll rate this two because "Your New Favourite Band" is a decent one-time listen but just not something I should surely listen before I die.
a compilation album? fuck this list. this is a lot more energy than I thought it would be. not my taste, but better than I imagined.
Not my style of music anyways, but this felt repetitive and not entertaining.
It's loud, it's fast, it's punkish, and it's all the same.
A greatest hits album (basically)? I liked the Hives at one point in time, but really just their fast songs so it makes sense that this is the “album” they chose if they needed a Hives album….but I don’t think they needed a Hives album.
i hate all this british music. why is there so much
Feels a bit like an album that might play nonstop at Hot Topic. Pop/punk without any bite.
Really not my thing
Sometimes there's a reasons why songs are relegated to mid album and not released as singles... On the plus side, it was over in 28 minutes.
The nostalgia did not hold up on this one.
This didn't really do anything for me.
Some stuff on here for a FIFA menu screen, but not enough to keep me interested in the full album (though I still listened through a couple times).
Didn't like at all.
Punky but not punk. Poppy but not pop. On paper I should love this but in 2001 a bunch of clean kids playing garagey rock on MTV wasn’t all that interesting to me. A compilation of tracks from across a few records, and this is the best then can do? No way they could ever be my favourite band.
When I saw this was a compilation album I felt a little cheated, but garage rock, couldn't be too bad could it? My initially high expectations were shattered pretty quickly. These guys have a formula, it's simple, they use it on just about every track, and it gets boring quickly. I was amazed that a sub-thirty-minute album could drag on so long. Two stars.
Summary: The Hives belong on this list but this major-label-marketing-bs-repackaged-collection does not. (I’d pick Veni Vidi Vicious.) Astonishingly talented band: 3 stars Legit commitment to punk rock: + 1 star Sticky melodies: + 1 star Monotonous tendencies: -1 star Repackaged collection: -1 star Poorly curated and even more poorly ordered: -1 star _______ 2 stars
i mean this was good, there was nothing wrong with it, just good fun loud garage rock. i have no problem with that. but there was nothing about it that grabbed me either, nothing particularly interesting, and i’m kind of wondering why this album is significant enough to be on this list at all.
This is fine, one of the lesser bands from the garage revival of the aughts. A few catchy tunes but ultimately very repetitive. Also, this is a compilation, so against the list’s own rule
This album is from a Swedish garage rock band. The list makers seem to exclude greatest hits albums, but they made a minor exception in this case, as this album is a compilation of tracks from three previously released records. I’m impressed with the band’s English (all tracks are in English), but their music is average. I thought the last track was the best. The album title is Your New Favorite Band, but alas, tis not.
Don’t usually give reviews on albums but I thought this deserved one. I read some reviews for this album after listening genuinely confused why it was on the list. That’s when I saw that this was a greatest hits album. I actually laughed out loud when I read this. You’re telling me THIS is the best this band has to offer? What a joke. Such a nothing album.
Never liked this garage rock sound
I love garage rock. I even love garage rock revival. I even appreciate the Hives. But this "album" (it is a compilation), even though I enjoyed listening to it, is completely inessential. Not the best of the Hives, not the best garage rock release of 2001 (that would be Ultraglide in Black by the Dirtbombs), not even the best single artist garage rock compilation (that would be Matador Singles '08 by Jay Reatard or The Mummies Play Their Own Records). Just a bunch of decent-to-great songs that don't really belong together. Underwhelming and just doesn't belong on this list.
Someone's been listening to too much 1977's punk, but didn't understand the basic concept. Annoying.
Hate to Say I Told You So - 4/5 Main Offender - 3/5 Supply and Demand - 1/5 Die, All Right - 3/5 Untutored Youth - 2/5 Outsmarted - 1/5 Mad Man - 3/5 Here We Go Again - 3/5 a.k.a I-D-I-O-T - 2/5 Automatic Schmuck - 2/5 Hail Hail Spit n'Drool - 1/5 The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime - 2/5 Average score: 2.3/5 ⭐️⭐️ they have a lot of audacity to make that their album/compilation title. they're far from my "new favourite band" that's for sure this was pretty hard to sit through. one decent song and 11 others that are okay at best and headache inducing at worst. at least the runtime is pretty short
i am so confused why they put a random compilation of the hives that was put together just to market the band outside of sweden. i have only heard a few hits and ‘Hate to say I told you so’ is one of them, and it’s a banger. but the rest… very much not for my ears unfortunately 😅 2/5 ⭐️⭐️
eh, alright
Not my cup of tea. I don’t prefer singers to yell through every song.
I thought I would like this, but I appalled it. I thought it would be a fun early 2000s rock album, which it sort of is, but my ears didn't agree with it. Too much mumble yelling.
Sat with this one for a couple days and kept it going in the background. Not mad at it. Stand out tracks - Supply and Demand; Mad Men!
My favorite music genre is ordinarily the type of alt rock that serves as the soundtrack of craft breweries. For an album with such an audacious title, this was incredibly mid and the vocals were grating.
pretty generic 2000s alt rock. not sure what makes this so amazing to include it on this list, and it a greatest hits too. it gets a star off for that. This was incredibly underwhelming. I had had enough after about 3 songs. 2 stars
Eh. Very same-y (yes I know that was the point.)
The vocals severely limit this album. 2.4.
Not my favorite anyway. Must not be for me I guess.
Mid
Helt okej! Honestly, ju mer jag lyssnar på det, desto mer känner jag "varför är det här albumet här?" What's it doing? Det är ett samlingsalbum. Det är väldigt garagerock för sin tid, men honestly, lite för mycket punk/garage. Jag tänkte ge en trea, fuck it, tvåa it is
Too shouty to be my favourite band. Long half hour.
Rock, Pop, Krafvoll gesungen, Etwas von zu Hardrock und Gittarenriff.
At least it was short and I now know how older Hives sound.
Kick ass rock'n'roll and I understand the appeal, but just noise to me.
This is always too loud whatever volume it is on.
Heard Hate To Say I Told You So before. And I'm glad it was on this album because the rest was eeeh. The vocals are too shouty, the music is nothing special. And I think you can tell it's a compilation of two different albums because something feels off about it 2/5
Not mine.
I don't have a problem with compilations being on here per se. There are plenty that became culturally significant, and there are artists whose influence is enormous and whose music must be heard but who came up before the album era. Having said that, THIS isn't the compilation I'd put on here, nor would I include one of their studio albums. They're one of the many also-ran bands of the early 2000s. They're fine. A couple of bangers. But there's nothing here that The Stooges or one of the 60s garage rockers didn't do, except maybe crank up the speed a bit. The singer's not bad, though, and I definitely like some of these songs. So there's no hate. I just don't see it as being an album one must hear.
It is a compilation album, which is a violation of the rules, and it's not even remotely their strongest album (that would be THE BLACK AND WHITE ALBUM). While I have always loved "Hate to Say I Told You So", this band was largely a one hit per album band, and definitely not something that needed to be heard before death in order to understand the arc of music history. Better than The Strokes, but that is not saying much. After the one hit, the pyschobilly of "Mad Man" was vaguely interesting as well as "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime", where the band at least tried something different. On this album, The Hives didn't really add anything to the punk sub-genre we haven't heard a thousand times before and it suffers from sounding a little too similar from track to track like a punk version of beige.
Very presumptuous title! It's fine. A bit boring towards the end which is not great as it's only 28 mins.
Not terrible but nothing stood out to me. Loses a star for being a compilation/greatest hits album, which feels lazy to include in this list.
This is fine. The songs, besides "Hate to Say I Told You So," blend together. Does not seem worthy of this list.
A.K.A. N-O-I-S-E
The good: it's fast and it's got a lot of energy. The bad: it's sort of forgettable and it overstays its welcome a few songs in. It's also a "best of" album, which shouldn't count for this list.
3/10 This is a compilation album comprising songs from two previous albums and an EP. So it doesn’t belong on this list. With that out of the way, the music here is ok. The vibe is really good in places and I bet they’re a really great live act, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to translate into the studio. It’s all just a bit too lacking in grit and rage. It’s quite punky, but it all feels too clean and sanitised, like the singer wanted to be in a punk band, but hasn’t really got enough angst to pull it off. Apparently he was a postman and 6th grade teacher before the band took off and that kind of makes sense. It also sounds like the rest of the band would prefer to be playing more indie-rock stuff, so it often lacks the pace and intensity that is implied by the vocal. It felt like a lot of the album just rolled one song into the next and there was nothing particularly memorable about any of it. I’d often forgotten everything about the last track by half way through the following one, which was a particular achievement, given that most of the songs aren’t even three minutes long. The one memorable song on there is the big hit that was so overplayed that it’s pretty annoying to hear at this point. Perhaps it’s only memorable because it’s been burned into my brain over the years? Basically, on this evidence, The Hives seem to take elements of bands that I do like and roll them up into a package that I don’t, without ever really adding any hooks, or reasons to listen to this over any of those aforementioned bands. But I still reckon I’d enjoy them live. Hate To Say I Told You So - The big hit, straight off the bat. I mean it’s ok, but it was so overplayed at the time that I’m tired of it already. It’s the same chords round and round, the guys voice is quite annoying and it doesn’t have enough aggression to it to justify the simplicity, in my opinion. It’s sanded down punk rock. Main Offender - This is a thrashy garage rock type song, but it feels a bit too slow to me. It’s quite plodding and the singer is wrecking his voice with an intensity that doesn’t match the pace of the music. Supply And Demand - This is very stilted and doesn’t really flow for me. There are some awful noises in here that, again, don’t really match to the snaded-down punk rock of it all. It’s just so mild and lacking in grit. Die, All Right - This has got a bit more pace to it, which is good. The verse has got a decent bit of drive to it, but the chorus doesn’t follow up on that promise. Untutored Youth - This is actually a bit more punk, but it still all feels quite sanitised. Where’s the anger? Where’s the ferocity? Outsmarted - This has got a good riff to kick things off. There’s more pace, and a bit more drive and ferocity to things here and it’s pretty good. This is when the formula works. Add intensity, and I’ll start buying in a bit more. Mad Man - Again, this is ok. There are some bits of variety here and there and it’s got a bit more intensity to it. It’s not vastly interesting, but it’s not bad. Here We Go Again - This has got a decent riff with a nice cadence to the rhythm. BUt again, it’s not overly memorable or particularly engaging past that point. A.k.a. I-D-I-O-T - The vibe is good, again, the drive and attitude is better here, but I also don’t think this is very memorable. They write decent punky-energy songs, but don’t seem to be very good at writing memorable hooks. Automatic Schmuck - This is ok. Again, energy good, vibe decent. There are some nice little bits of writing here that give it a bit more range and variety, but it almost feels long at only 2 minutes long and I don’t think I’ll remember it by the time I’m half way through the next track. Hail Hail Spit N' Drool - I’m starting to sound like a broken record. If I was going to listen to music like this, I’d want something more grimy, punky and with something more to say. And I can’t remember how the previous song went, so I was correct. The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime - This is plodding and uninteresting. Half way through and nothing’s happened. And now it’s finished. More repetitive riffs, but not even any vocal. Big old pile of ‘meh’.
I’m on team no compilation albums
The first album I have encountered on the list where I have questioned its existence on the list. Neither influential nor very good at what it does, I am cannot believe there isn’t something else that could have taken its place. Not much to grab your attention apart from the big single, which has a decent energy.
I’m not completely averse to this album but it does just rehash The Ramones and other bands in that style of which there are 101 other equivalents. I’m not quite sure what makes this album a particular standout over others of that ilk. An odd inclusion.
yeah… not my new favorite band. Spell it right.
The first song is the only good song.
Un álbum olvidable y poco relevante como para estar en esta lista. Es un estilo de música que no me atrapa mucho, pero fuera de mi opinión subjetiva, simplemente me pareció que hay muchísima más música que merecería escuchar antes de morir antes que esto.
Every song sounds the same.
Repetitive and mostly boring. Best track = last track.
you cant trick me into enjoying an album by using that title. Really sounds 20 years late to the genre, nothing you havent heard before by better artists.
Basically take the worst parts of The Stooges and The Ramones and blend them together. First song was fine and then it was severely downhill from there
Ok first off I don’t think compilations should be on the list. Anyways I feel like I might just be biased because garage rock isn’t really my thing but I was pretty bored during this. There are some cool riffs here and there but everything else sort of feels noisy and mildly overdone by the end of the album. I didn’t hate this but I probably wouldn’t listen to it again. Fav songs: hate to say I told you so, the hives are law, you are the crime
This album cheats by being a compilation and still isn’t very good. It’s just so boring and repetitive. The first third starts off fine, but hearing very similar tracks over and over again gets old pretty fast, especially considering every song is so short. None of it was actively bad, but also didn’t feel unique or interesting. Even the relatively good riffs are forgettable once the song ends, except for maybe Hate To Say I Told You So, which is probably the whole reason this compilation exists anyway. Very weird choice for a greatest albums of all time list Standout Tracks: Hate To Say I Told You So, The Hives Are the Law, You are Crime 1/5 deserves to be on this list
Meh, poorly recorded/mastered, clipped and distorted vocals; the 'Loudness War' writ large, unsurprising given the date of the release. I wonder if the original albums these tracks were pulled from were technically any better? Unfortunately I am not interested enough in the contents to go and listen. Fairly generic, yelled, vocals over high energy but simplistic guitars, bass and drums. Why is this on the list? By the time I got as far as 'Untutored Youth', I was bored by the posturing. 2/5 from me.
It's not bad. I enjoyed the first track. The rest sound much the same as the first. Some pop out a bit different. It's kind of a cheat that's it's a "greatest hits" from their first couple of albums. I mean if they added a Frank Sinatra greatest hits it would be a five stars. That aside is that it's not bad, they are fun, even if nothing really sticks with you for long. It's the kind of rock that you hear at a party and maybe listen to it on the way home, but you don't think about it past that. I heard it and never thought to tell my friends about it. I work with people that also do this list and didn't think to tell them about it when we talked. Fun for forgettable.
Idk I don’t think a compilation should be on the list. It also sounds very generically punk in a pleasant but unremarkable kind of way.
This is essentially just The Sonics, 40 years later. Which is a tough sell, given The Sonics' greatness was their inventiveness, so you're kinda just left with pastiche here. The 12 songs on this compilation bleed together. Forgettable.
Sorry! This is not my new favorite band. All the songs sounded the same.
[Hier meine übliche Punk Bewertung einfügen}
Not feeling this one to much. I get that punk is played fast and loose but this was just a little too fast and a little too loose. While there were tracks I liked I didn't really feel too much variety between songs. Could be a grower but for now I gotta say 3/5.
2 - ok, just rock
This one didn’t really land for me
2.0 The first song pretty famous. But there isn't too much charateristic of this one.
A greatest hits feels like cheating but also I am pretty grateful I didn't have to listen to more of these guys just to hear the 'hits'. I little too noisy for me but maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I were on a run.
Judging from this album, the Hives definitely have a signature sound. It’s not that every song sounds the same, but there isn’t much variety between them either. It’s fine, nothing too exciting in my opinion. 2.4 stars, because I don’t quite feel like rounding this one up to 3.
Fort loud et mid
Britslop
I Hate To Say I Told You So was everywhere when it came out. I liked that song at the time but never felt the need to revisit throughout the years since. This album was fine, not gonna argue with anyone who loves it. It didn't resonate with me today though, high 2.
The first song was good. The rest might be better if I gave them more of a shot but I don't really feel like it.
Well, they do remind me of a more punk, less good version of the Strokes (thank you to whoever wrote that--lol). Didn't enjoy. Two stars.
no. not even close. cocky mfs
FAVO: Supply and demand, The hives are coming, you are law
A bit fun at times, but mostly just loud and mediocre all around.
I listened to this in the car on the way back from depositions in Bristol and it was... fine. Too much screaming for my 50 y.o. taste, but whatever. When I got home I was trying to find it in their discography on Wikipedia and it wasn't there. So I searched for it directly by name and it turns out it's not really an "album" but rather "a collection by The Hives released in 2001, featuring tracks from their first two albums and the A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T EP"? I call foul, sirs! So it's not really an album and I definitely didn't need to listen to it before I die. That drops it from my original three stars to two.
Guitar and drums are good but it sounds like music I’ve heard before. Not super my vibe. Also a very short album at 28 minutes so it’s practically an EP. Shoutout to ‘Supply and Demand’ because I genuinely could not understand a single word he was singing. A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T was my favourite.
This is #day348 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… nope, this isn't my new favorite band. The "decision to release such a compilation was made with the intention of achieving mainstream success in the UK and other territories," kind of says it all in a way. I'm not sure why anyone would have to hear a compilation before they die. I think if you're picking a band as a must-hear, you should go for a studio album. And if no studio album stands out or is worth checking out, maybe this band isn't that essential? This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day349.
Every song sounds the same. I was bored by them in 2001. I'm still bored by them.
I agree with a lot of folks on this project that it seems weird there is a compilation album on here, and even then it doesn’t really rate above some of the original garage albums that the Hive’s are pulling influence from. Not terrible, but not deserving of this list.
Álbum ultra genérico de rock. No me ha gustado casi nada.
Groupe inconnu.
It's not an LP but a collection of songs from previous albums and EPs. It soundes too commercial post punk/garage, and it turned out they made this compilation to get commercial success in the UK and other countries. The album's name shows there is too much ego there...not a fan of the music and the band.
Nope
🪇
Jeg så the hives sidste år og synes det er et rigtig fedt liveband, men er ikke stor fan af lyden når man hører det på et album. Det lyder som en reklame
Åbenlyst post-Is This It money grab. Lyder cool nok (glædelig fredag!!) men ville hellere have hørt en egentlig plade.
Nothing to write home about here
Bleurgh
It’s okay, but not too special. Not something I would return to again. Also, minus points for it being a compilation album.
Nope, definitely not my new favourite band. Who wants The Hives? That's like asking, "Hey, who wants some genital herpes?" I'd rather be hit with a pillowcase full of soap bars than have to listen to this again.
Album 800 of 1089 The Hives - Your New Favourite Band (2001) Rating : 2 / 5 This is pretty much a greatest hits album. Doesn't belong on the list. Halfway decent punk, though.
Not my new favourite band
Two stars for the band - the instrumental end track convinced me this could have been a better band with a different lead
Not my thing
The best thing about this one-note album of boring sameness is that it is 28 minutes long. And that’s still too long. Live, they pose as arrogant assholes, which I guess is their whole schtick/vibe, but they overplay that joke as well. Hives, stop trying to make the Hives a thing. On the whole, though, still not as bad as Kid Rock.
Kind of made me roll my eyes. Felt longer than its 28 minutes, and not in a good "oh this is substantive" way. Garage rock revival is great and all and it sure sounds like The Hives are having fun, but I am not.
I was not familiar with the artist or album before listening. The music was just ok for me. Kind of garage sounding indie rock. But reading about how this is a compilation of two albums and an EP "with the intention of achieving mainstream success" kind of seems like it's not appropriate for inclusion with this series. Would not seek this one out again.
As much as I usually enjoy the “suburban garage sound” this was too shouty and not all that interesting. Also… a compilation album? Really?
It's not bad and is catchy but it doesn't feel like it's doing anything special. Also a compilation album isn't a regular album.
A louder, over compressed version of garage rock. The mixing is alright. They are good at what they are doing, I'm just not sure I can get behind this being required listening.
Shockingly, NOT my new favorite album.
The musicians in this band are extremely talented. As much as I want to like garage punk, "Howlin' Pelle Alqmvist"'s vocals made me wish my head would explode and take me out of my misery. The talent on display here can't trump my personal taste in the end.
Wild coincidence that this album came right after the Ramones debut album in the challenge. I found myself enjoying the Ramones one more. This somehow overstayed its welcome, despite also being less than 30 minutes. I appreciate the energy but the songs just felt annoying after a point. I also am honestly not sure if I’d be able to tell the difference between The Hives and The Vines. Hate To Say I Told You So is awesome. I also liked the last song on the album, probably because the singer stopped screaming and i enjoyed his silence lmao
Very talented band, but the vocalist got on my nerves by the end of the album with constant voice cracks and angsty delivery Standout: The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime
We had Ramones yesterday, and this is a lot like Ramones for me but without the magic. Did not really stick in my mind and actually somehow overstayed its welcome despite being under 30 minutes long.
Why so mad?
3/10 - this is not my new favorite band I can tell you that much. Reminded me of group sex and GI by Germs. Both of which I didn’t like too much. It was just punk rock and not in the good way - at least it was short
generic garage rock/punk. it's very straightforward, in-your-face music without much originality, creativity or depth. rather, it sounds like a punk-y mash-up of other major punk/rock bands without contributing anything unique. as many others have noted, it's also a compilation album, so it's not even really possible to evaluate the songs in relation to each other. despite that, it's not an unpleasant listen (and it's short!). just very forgettable.
Well, let's see if this will be my new favourite band...first off, this album doesn't seem to be in the version of 1001 Albums that I have on my Kindle. Second - a (short) compilation? And third, a retro garage punk band? I played this a couple of times, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was particularly exceptional. I can think of other, better, garage bands.
Might be okay if the guy could sing.
Итс окэй, но на фоне Лед Зеппедин 4, которому я поставил 3, это не 3, иф ю ноу вот ай мин. Лучшая песня - Hate to Say I Told You So.
A compilation, huh? What a dodge that is. Plus, this is lame. Seems like these guys dressed up as rock starts one Halloween and decided to stick with it.
releasing a compilation album called Your New Favourite Band seems like a death knell
Enjoyed this when it came out but I did get bored of it really quickly. "Main Offender" and "Hate to say i told you so" are still decent but the rest sounds really dated.
Fun album. More on the punkier side for me but still enjoyable. Good energy and catchy choruses . Still not as good as some of their other albums.
Lots of yelling. I didn’t like this album
Why is there a greatest hits album on this list when we have to endure multiple albums from other artists? Add in the fact that there is only one song on this that I knew and it seems to be a compilation album from a band that's a one hit wonder. (Well at least in my country). The songs themselves are enjoyable punk / post punk, but no one is going to accuse them of technical greatness, and they're a few decades late to the party. I'm kind of baffled as to why this is on the list tbh.
Bit one paced. At least short.
This gave me hives
Dumb but fun
This was ok , not really my type of game but some fun hype
Starts off with two absolute ragers, then just sputters out.. really promising then just throws away that promise, still love you The Hives!
One dimensional and annoying
Lol a greatest hits album from a one hit wonder band???
The album did not deliver on the title’s promise. Not awful, but instantly forgettable.
Meh. Kinda boring imo
This was pretty mid, Hate To Say I Told You So is miles clear of the rest
frankly disconcerting
Meh.
For the first three and a half minutes I was ready to compare this to Song 2 or Last Nite or A-Punk or whatever other 00s jump up punky pop garage guitar banger, but my enthusiasm waned pretty rapidly. They’ve not got many tricks up their sleeve besides the catchy opening track. Probably 3 stars if this was an actual album, but how the fuck is this what we make an exception for to allow a compilation?
At the grand old age of 31 I felt I was too old for this garage rock retread even if I could see why the young uns might fall for it. If we're having compilations we'd be better off with Nuggets - way more influential and something you genuinely need to hear.
++: Hate to Say I Told You So +: Main Offender, Supply and Demand, Outsmarted, Here We Go Again +-: Die, All Right!, Untutored Youth, A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T, Hail Hail Spit N' Drool, The Hives Are Low, You Are Crime -: Mad Man --: Automatic Schmuck 4,9/10
What’s next, a Jet album?
It's fine. Very early '00s and it shows. Vocals are fun, songwriting otherwise is rather bland. Odd that a greatest hits record is on this list, and probably better served with an actual record. It feels like they're holding back -- played faster it'd be better.
2 - not bad not very interesting
Still not my favourite band.
What is supposed to be a revival of something? Sounds more like the total death of a genre to my ears.
Kind of intense, like being given sketchy stimulants at a party and then later you can’t tell if you’re having acid reflux or you’re about to blow a coronary.
Starts off really well with ‘Hate To Say I Told You So’ and then capitulates in on itself into frantic, shouty, squalling noise. I was glad when it was finished.
Ah right, so the Hives were the band behind that banging opener I’ve head on sports shows and adverts for the last 20 years! Such a shame then that every single track between that and the closing instrumental were formulaic, one dimensional post punk bore fests. Thank the Swedish lord this was a meagre 28 mins in length as no way could even a rawer teenage version of me have lasted through 40+ minutes of this torrid guff. Very, very forgettable.
This is a "best of" album.
It's been awhile since I've listened to The Hives but I basically knew what to expect with this one. I remember listening to Veni Vidi Vicious back in the day and thinking that aside from "Hate to Say I Told You So," which is such a banger, these guys are just kind of lame. The vocals are annoying, the guitar riffs repetitive, and the sound is evocative of all their influences without sounding original at all. If you want this lofi, high energy dance rock sound of the early 2000s, go listen to The Strokes, The Rapture, or Franz Ferdinand. They all do it better.
That was more forgettable than either Veni Vidi Vicious or Tyrannosaurus Hives, both of which I am firmly the target market and love.
Fine. Not really my style of rock
I hated this then and I hate this now.
It’s that 1990s-2000s rock/garage that does absolutely nothing other than ‘defining the genre’. This compilation has the air of an album from the early album era - one where the hit single is first, followed by about half an hour of filler. No songs are really above 2 and a half minutes aside from the clear most popular song Hate to Say I Told You So, which is evidently popular although I don’t think I’d heard it before. One of those songs that you can’t ever remember hearing before, but is still memorable in some way. That’s the only merit I can give this compilation above the bare minimum of ‘being palatable’. I will be making the obvious joke here that The Hives are certainly not my New Favourite Band, but I hope someone may be swung by this music. It just does nothing for me. I especially can’t imagine anyone having this as their favourite album ever. And therefore I can’t imagine why it’s on the list.
