As the kids say: it was mid
But they’re Swedes!
Two stars is now also reserved for albums that in no way deserved to make this list. This is fine but ??

Loud and noisy, not clear why this would be a must-listen compared to other loud noise.
no m'ha agradat ni la cançó famosa... ups! tampoc és terrorífic
Fun style. Upbeat and I would think that I would love them. I remember digging another album of theirs in the early 2000s. But it was kind of a mess. It just goes to show you actually need good "song writing" even in punky, poppy, rock bands.
Makes me think of the Kinks and Sex Pistols merged up... Fresh, but not very original
Compilations are not albums I'm afraid
Not my style. Rough
You know what, this was a pretty solid album, however these guys are definitely not my new favourite band. Wouldn't even crack the top 10. I liked this, however I'm deducting 1 point because compilations do not belong on this list.
Not good, nemam sto nadodati.
I guess theyre tryna give a confident and cool vibe w the titles&lyrics, but it comes off too heavy in aka the idiot (\"laughing, knowing that the joke is on you\")(the spelling out of idiot is also quite excessive)/outsmarted. so far the songs have been kinda homogenous, probably too much for me. its quite rough. there isn't really anything memorable besides the lyrics repetition. it'd be nice if the intro for mad man was more developed. the drums are good and the synths in the hives are law are nice addition, wish there were lyrics with it as it got a bit repetitive having listened to most songs i might come back to die alright, but probably not the rest of the album. i'd put a 2/5
On paper, these guys are right up my alley, but despite their shredding guitars and shouty vocals they are somehow quite boring. Not terrible, but I really can't stand them. If they were on the bill at a festival, I would have gone for a piss and offered to grab you a beer on the way back, and maybe stopped for a few songs at the local stage. Two stars.
a few fun songs i saved, nothing spectacular
After reading about this, I didn’t think I would probably like it at all. But as I started listening to it, I didn’t mind it and actually liked a couple of the songs. However, as it went on, I found it really redundant. I’m gonna settle at two stars for this one.
First listen. Meh.
I can clearly state The Hives are not even close to being my new favorite band. Thank goodness that album was less than 30 minutes long, because I was close to just turning it off. It was just super uninteresting. Also why is a collection album on this list? That makes zero sense to me, because then any artist’s greatest hits collection could just be inserted instead of actual album releases. Nonsensical choice with this one
Opening track is nostalgic, but the rest of this falls flat. There’s other, better post punk out there.
Awesome, another band with annoying, blown out vocals. Please let that trend die forever
Best of albums should NOT be included on this list. Because of the best of nature of this album, there is no cohesion and that is also a demerit. This sounds like an advertising agency's house band version of what they think the "kids want". But it just makes me want to listen to bands that do it well. Altgough its 4o seconds too long, I liked Automatic Schmuck. I didn't want to, it just happened.
Not my new favourite band.
This is apparently a compilation album...which is weird and doesn't seem fit for this list. Aside from that, it's short, punchy, fast garage punk that had a couple highs.
Yeah, nah. I actually ended up listening to the Datsuns instead. NZ 1 - Sweden 0
Not a huge fan, although some of the earlier tracks showed promise. Hate To Say I Told You So is a strong album opener, almost verging into pop territory with its infectious guitar riff and glowing, colourful chord progression. But (most of) the rest of the album commits to a much less enjoyable version of that first song, with net-positive tracks being few and far between. The sound is kind of Rolling Stones meets Strokes meets very-very-weak-post-punk, and it's mostly the latter. The singing is clearly imitating the more "crazed" side of the punk movement, featuring a lot of off-pitch shouting and screaming, caveman drums (a bit faster though. maybe "caveman in a hurry".), and a heavily distorted guitar-bass combo. It definitely would've riled up the teenage crowds back in the 70s, but it's weirdly out of place in the 21st century, and I can't say it's covered any new ground. 2/5 Key tracks: Hate To Say I Told You So, Untutored Youth, Here We Go Again
Today’s album was a bit of a shock and a weird coincidence after yesterday’s. What are the chances of two Swedish groups one after another? Especially after yesterday’s choice The Cardigans, when I nearly commented that it was a tick box exercise to include Sweden on the list. But before I made a dick of myself I fortunately remembered ABBA who are bound to feature at some stage. I fell into the same trap as yesterday thinking that The Hives were also a UK post punk band until I read their Wiki page. I quite liked the album until about three songs in when I realised that there was little in the music to differentiate each track. A lot of fellow 1001’ers complain that a greatest hits album should not be on the list. In fairness I think that the album is a conglomeration of previously released odds and sods rather than hits as in reality they haven’t had enough to fill a full album. And as if to reinforce this point the album length is only 28 minutes. I’d have been very disappointed about that if I’d bought the album. All in all a bit better than their fellow Countrymen yesterday but still a lowly 2/5. Now what are the odds of another Swedish group tomorrow? If it’s ABBA I’ll eat my copy of Arrival. 2/5 12/9/24
We see an attractive, but not intimidatingly so, 30-something mother sitting at an intersection. The lights are red. In the backseat her children are restless; in the front, her husband is listlessly looking at his phone. She sighs, but then something catches her eye! It's a billboard advertising a new SUV. She closes her eyes and we cut to footage of that same SUV driving in a variety of exciting situations as one of the tracks from this album (it doesn't matter which, they're all the same) plays loudly. It drives dramatically into a puddle, over a sand dune, and through a conspicuously barren urban environment. A perfect synthesis of power and practicality! We return to the woman in the car, still closing her eyes. The light has turned green and she is stirred from her daydream by the voice of her husband as he asks "What are you waiting for?" She looks at the camera and smiles. The new Honda Elevate. What are YOU waiting for?
5/10 This is totally competent straight down the line punk. So that means short, shouty songs, good melodies, nice guitar, sharp production. It also gives me a bit of a headache after 3 songs Best: Hate To Say I Told You So
#65 - This was quite unmusical, boring repetitive riffs and the singer has a range of three notes. I am sure they think they're the coolest thing ever but really not worth the listen.
Eh. I never got into the garage rock thing. This is fine I guess but there's nothing here for me to feel.
The first four tracks are mostly indie garage rock and sound totally fine. But starting with Untutored Youth, they are followed by absolutely painful punk rock. That said, it's not the absolute worst punk rock, but I just hate punk rock in general. 3 stars for the garage rock tracks, 1 star for the punk tracks (wasn't able to stand to any of them in full - apart from the final instrumental track, which was totally fine again).
proprio non è il mio genere, neanche se mi sforzo. mi sono rotta le balle dopo due canzoni
If you were going to break your own rules and include a compilation, the least you could have done is make it a good one.
Wasn't anything but loud and aggro then and hasn't grown into any additional merits in the years since. Plus, one must object quite strenuously against the inclusion in this list of compilations, which should not qualify for obvious reasons. Rounding up because they are not altogether contrived and, as the review quoted in the now ex-ed recap suggests, maybe the marketing (including the obnoxious title) wasn't their fault entire.
Swedish garage-rock-punk revival band - some tracks reminded me of the Stranglers. Nothing special.
Dicke Hose Rock
This band has one speed and that's full-on balls to the wall. I was on board at first but song after song the relentless pace becomes exhausting and everything starts sounding the same. Change it up a bit boys!
I don't like that this is a compilation album. There's not really any other "best of"s or comp albums post 1950s on this list. I do like this music, though. So I'm in this difficult spot of trying to rate an album that I don't think should be on the list, but am thoroughly enjoying. Musically, it's not complicated at all, but it doesn't need to be. They want to blow your face off with distorted guitar riffs, muted screaming vocals, fast tempos, and drums that sounds like a train that lost its breaks. They do all of those things well. On principle of it being a compilation album: 1 star Rating it as if it were any other album: 3.5 star (ish) So we'll split the difference and call it a 2 star. Favorite Song(s): A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T, Main Offender
Big talk from the Hives here. I will say for the record they are not my new favorite band.
uusi suosikkini bändini on tässä. hullunkurista punkki mätkytystä. originaalia ja mahtavaa jeejeejeejeejee!!! toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana toista sana . drums kinda good outsmarted

the title would be funny if the band was provocative in any way. "The decision to release such a compilation was made with the intention of achieving mainstream success in the UK and other territories." and it sure sounds like that, from 2001. as mentioned in the Vines review, I hated this era of uninspired 'The' band radio rock, and it's aged badly. I can't believe I still have to hear Franz Ferdinand out in the world. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
A photocopy of a photocopy of something I like a lot.
Nothing that I'd listen to again
Actually, not. I was relieved when this album was over. The lyrics, although difficult to make out when listening, were interesting to read in Spotify. "Would you like lemon or lime with that piece of advice mister?" Didn't realize they were Swedish, maybe that's why they were added to this list?
Lots of frenetic playing and yelling into the mic. Some of their later stuff is better and more melodic.
Hated the singer’s voice. I’m not a big fan of garage rock so unsurprising result.
Fine but completely forgettable.
unoriginal. feel like ive heard it 5000 times from the first listen
very fast british rockpunk. stopped it at outsmarted. not my cuppa!
This was so much more punk than I was expecting. I thought everything would be like Hate To Say I Told You so. Loved it. Very strong 2.
Inaccurate Album Title
Came out about the time I drifted away from terrestrial radio Heard the first song, never did much for me Yeah that low fi throwback sound, lumped in with the darkness, jet, white stripes etc. Another overrated Brit punk album. Not surprising for this list. 2 star blah
Here we go kappaleessa tuntuu että saan kaverien ajatuksenjuoksusta ainakin melodisesti enemmän selvää... Tulee mieleen tässä loppualbumissa albumin parhaat kohdat.. ensimmäiset sekunnit ennenkuin raivo pääsi valloilleen.. Sietämätön raivo tyhjän huutaminen.. Onneksi lopussa artistic..
Nothing memorable here at all.
2.5 it’s ok. The second half was better when it leaned into more punk sounds but something about them seems off. It’s like arctic monkeys tried making a punk album
Solid set of tracks, but I feel that including a compilation album here is sort of cheating.
I was about ready to trashjthis entirely forgettable one-hit wonder track album for taking up a spot on this list, but I actually settled into it well enough. Is it still entirely forgettable, dated piece of music from the garage rock revival scene? Yeah, but it's decent enough to keep you tuned in over its brief 28 minute runtime.
Songs lacking in direction and execution.
Think im coming down with a case of the hives
eh
Rock, Punk, 2001 -> 2
A perfect punk/pop/rock banger to open the album - I love that track - regularly crops up on one of my playlist shuffles. But the rest gets nowhere near that level for me. A high 2.
-1 star for being a compilation album
Eh, it’s just kinda loud and noisy. 4/10
Zeker niet mijn nieuwe favoriete band. Eerste nummer is de moeite nog waard, daarna veel geschreeuw en (toegegeven: aardige) gitaar.
2.5 maybe? Doesnt hold up
Heard *of* them but never *heard* them. Strong Stooges vibes at times, but overall this sounds like a dime-a-dozen post-punk band.
The not very good vocals and simplistic music and high energy are winning in small doses and absolutely exhausting at album length.
meh
Too screamy for me. Stand-out: A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T
these types all sound the same, and some others are much better than this and more bearable. this is most deff not my new favourite band, and it's far from being something I had to ever listen to. it's annoying as fuck.. bonus points for being so short
This is not my new favorite band.
A greatest hits album from a band that had no hits and released only two albums prior. Compilation albums should not be on this list. A title that may have seemed clever at the time but they were not “new” or anyone’s “favorite” band. Songs one at a time can be fun but one after the next becomes very tiresome. Give the listener a pause, change things up just a little. This album I’m really surprised is on this list.
This is what AI would come up with if you asked for a pop punk album. It's as inoffensive as you can get, plus a little fun along the way. The killer bass lines stand out. You've herd the rest of the album after the first three tracks
This list is really making me hate British music
Such an obnoxious album, yet I enjoyed it. It’s very well produced and probably would be in my regular rotation if the vocals didn’t suck so much. The lead singer lacks charisma and ruins the incredible vibe the rest of the band brings. Too much yelling, not enough singing.
The Hives have a great sound, although it's pretty monotonous. This album is only 28 minutes, and honestly it's hard to listen to all the way through, since it's almost nonstop thrashing and belting.
My new favourite band? - If only ... 2/5
Too overproduced and polished to be punk. There's a reason that one song is the only one anybody knows.
Started out with a great head-banger but went downhill from there.
Эту музыку писали в гараже, и слушать еë надо только в гараже. Чинить карбюратор под эту стену звука. Ахуенчик. НО: почему сюда попал сборник? Не по правилам, ставлю 1 балл + 1 по ОВ
opening track starts strong! but oh my the rest is bleh
too strong for my current mood
There was a time in my life I would’ve really loved this. It was more punky than I expected, but it was still just okay. I don’t think this deserves the same score as Bjork, but I don’t think it deserves a 3. 2.5 stars.
Compilation album?? 2/5
Forgettable
First song was the only one I had heard. Every song sounds the same.
NO SON DE MI ESTILO.......
I am not sure if it is really my new favorite band
Not my new favourite band. Immature, unimaginative and abrasive.
Definitely not my new favourite band but this was a solid collection of tracks. Not much else to say.
BL: I've heard of The Hives but I've never had a chance to listen to them. So will have to see how it goes. AL: Fun upbeat punk music. Nothing particularly world changing and only clocking in at around 30 minutes. This was enjoyable but I doubt I'd be running back to this to relisten any time particularly soon, compare to a lot of records on this list its incredibly forgettable and I'm not particularly sure why it was included. FT: "Main Offender", "Untutored Youth", "A.K.a. I - D - I - O - T" 2/5
Def not one of the top 1001 albums, who decided this should be on the list? not unlistenable, but very unremarkable.
Not a big fan of this style of music. Simple riffs, paper-thin sound.
Zu energetisch für mich heute 😅
Not really my kind of jam
It's powerful, visceral, and for me a good hit of nostalgia. But is it actually good? No, not really. Good to jump around to for a song, but not an album to sit down and listen to.
Cool punk rock, repetitive
Похоже панк из 2001 года. Визгливый, крикливый, безцеремонный Hives лучше чем Germs, но... ну мех. Мне не 13 лет чтоб повизгивать от "моей новой любимой группы". Это не _моя_ новая любимая группа. Но стоит сказать, что на паре треков я отбил ритм, so here's that. Это, пожалуй, наибольшее удовольствие, которое я получил от этого альбома. Две звезды.
1.5 - I don't understand why this compilation is on the 1001 albums rather than an album, but there's probably a reason that The Hives aren't an album band. Why even bother putting a compilation on there if you can't find an actual album by them that's good enough? Just choose a different band! As you can probably tell, I didn't like this. It was so, so repetitive, and it wasn't even that long, but it felt like it went on forever. It was basically like listening to the same song on loop for thirty minutes. And basically every song follows the pattern of chanting the song name in the chorus, which was so aggravating when I caught on to the pattern. It feels so lazy. Really not my type of thing.
On paper I should like it but nothing really stood out. -1 tax because it's a compilation album
Some allright punk 2
meh. A more aggressive and less clever Sloan?
Yeah. They aren’t. Kinda interesting but there are a million better groups from the early 2000s. And hip hop went nuts. But we have this to listen to. Your new 1500th favourite band. That band that was on the radio but you didn’t turn it off but just waited patiently till it ended when they hopefully played someone better. Not even worth dire. Just there. 2 stars.
This is a good album. The recording or mix sounds bad. There are times that it sounds like the audio is wavy. That threw me off of the whole album.
Wasn’t a fan the first time, still not
Maybe it just didn’t hit at the right time, but it wasn’t super memorable. No two tracks stood out. Maybe revisiting it will make me vibe with it more
A compilation album of shitty music.
How do you put what I'd essentially a greatest hits record on here? I'd give this a 2.5 but giving it a 2 because their compilation album is still mediocre.
I found it weird as fuck that a compilation album was included in the list so I cheated and listened to Veni Vidi Vicious. For such a famous and lauded album I felt kind of let down by how similar most of the tracks sounded. That said, I love how each one felt like quick little bursts of energy. I'd probably love them more in isolation from one another. Tracks that stood out to me upon 1st listen (only listing the ones that appear on YNFB): Main Offender; Hate to Say I Told You So; Find Another Girl Would I revisit VVV: No. Would I listen to YNFB based on my experience with VVV: Also no.
False advertising!
Aside from "Hate To Say I Told You So," nothing really stands out. It's a constant barrage of post-punk, and that's not a bad thing, it just doesn't push boundaries in any way. Also doesn't help that it's a compilation album... All in all, it's fun but I probably won't ever think about it again.
меня хватило на один раз. уважаю их за вклад в Веронику, но слушать такие прижатые голоса долго не могу
Not bad but extremely forgettable
Boring
Definitely a snack food kind of band - great at first, but the more I consumed the less satisfied and kind of sick I felt.
The music is OK at best. The vocals are just junk.
Okay I don't even hate this but there's no way this is a greatest hits album. THIS is the best of what they had??? Best song: Hate to Say I Told You So
False advertising. They're not my new favorite band. In fact, many similar bands do what they do better.
Yeah, I'm closer to Andy on this one than you other two knuckleheads. I think my taste for garage rock revivalists has gone the way of the Meg Whiteosaur and disappeared entirely. I can admire the fossils and bones for what they are, but at the end of the day I'd rather watch Jurassic Park. Still, I'll hand it to them for delivering a short album and I think the Hives clearly had more fun than anyone else from this era. (Are we getting one of The Vines records?) I'm confused by the fact this album was listed as a compilation on Apple Music and whether that's what we're doing now with this list, or if this means we're gonna get "Veni Vidi Vicious" and have to repeat the fact that "Hate to Say I Told You So" is the best song this band (or many bands) will ever write. Until then, I'll end on a positive note: I liked the last song! More instrumentals with synths, dudes.
Miks täällä on joku kokoelmalevy? Melkonen ratkaisu listan laatijalta todeta että tää on parempi ku studioplatat. Ihan jees hittejä kyllä, mutta ärsyttää. 2/5
This record sounds like a 28-minute long keyboard smash
If I’m in the mood, this is really good.
Your New Favourite Band is a collection of songs by The Hives released in 2001, featuring tracks from their first two albums and the A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T EP. This garage punk rock compilation album was created with the intention of achieving mainstream success for the band in the UK and abroad. The album met its goal by being highly rated critically and commercially. I had mixed feelings about this album because I liked the vibe on it, but something about the music I just could not love. Fans of punk rock - especially from the 90's - should love this album.
This list has so many boring punk albums but this takes the crumpet. Guilty pleasure at best
Overall, some fun garage rock here, and a little funny at times.
Not my type of guitar music, they make enough noise but I find them quite boring, no Husker Du, Ramones or Sonic Youth these Hives
Generic MLB 2k ass music
first two songs were great. then rest of the album sounded pretty similar
The band is good. Vocalist is not. Really enjoyed the last song and I realized why....no vocals.
I Like the instrumental from "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime"
It's a compilation album, except they've made the error of compiling papulty
Brought me back to Year 8 did this. Outside of the opener though, it didn't really do it for me
Look, The Hives are a fun band and HTSITYS is an early 00s classic (and the first song our high school band ever played live), but I was surprised to see them on the list. This is an alright album - a good shot of adrenaline, even if the songs are largely dispensable - but the fact it's a compilation makes its inclusion all the more baffling. Gotta mark it down for that.
Opens big. Then really struggles to follow on from that
I’ve started this album 3 separate times and just can’t get into it. It’s fine and I’m sure is good, but the sound is too generic
On one hand, we have an intense loud and energetic band faithful to the raw lo-fi style of garage rock and attitude and instrumentation of early punk and hardcore. On the other hand, this is beyond repetitive. They really nailed down their style, and I get the simple repeated riffs of classic punk, but it's embarrassing how songs sound almost identical from one to next. And for a compilation album, this is especially embarrassing. Too much filler that contributes nothing. I'd see like live for their sheer energy, but as an album band, I don't have many hopes for.
Disappointingly one dimensional. Not sure it would make the cut if people were to nominate albums today.
Honestly? Generic 2000s Britpop and nothing else that's special, even though they're Swedish. And it being a compilation album makes it less impressive. 4/10.
First song is a classic, and seems used in like every skateboard-ish commercial ever. Supply and Demand is a fucking war crime disguised as a song. And it just went downhill from there, like the Tony Hawk Pro Skater levels these songs belong in 2/5 made me angry
It's both rare and unfortunate for a 28 minute, 12 song album to feel so repetitive. The Ramones' self-titled and Buddy Holly's "The Chirping Crickets" are two similar cases I've reviewed here, but both ended up winning me over on charming delivery and an impeccable winning formula. This audaciously-named compilation by The Hives ("Your New Favourite Band") is anything but, though there's no denying it's relentlessly energetic. Through every staccato cranked-up guitar riff, furious drum fill, and fuzzed-out vocal, it aches with an urge to be taken seriously as a new breed of snappy, hyper-active schoolkid rock. Although there's a clear influence from 60's garage and 70's hardcore punk, it's a polished, super-compressed sound that could have only been pumped out in the early 2000s and gives no breathing room. "Hate To Say I Told You So", the band's signature song and one I did recognise, strikes the right tone as an attitude-filled opener. But then we hear the same attitude again. And again. And another time. And with more distortion. And at a slightly higher tempo. Every track may as well be an indistinguishable blend of tuneless frenzy, all very rough-and-ready but lacking any polish or sophistication. Any melody, nuance or variety is thrown out of the window in favour of strangled yells, rasps, outbursts. "Make it harder! Make it faster!" screams the salivating manager, envisaging The Strokes' or White Stripes' level of success. By the time "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime" rolls around with a refreshing change in sound and a lack of vocals, it's too little and too late. "Your New Favourite Band" gives the same rush as drinking a full six-pack of (diet) Coke in one go, without anything to break it up. Fun and tasty at first, with a feeling of wild rebellion… but by the end I was sick of the taste and ready to piss it all out of my system.
It’s a great sound but lots of bands have this sound. Some of them don’t forget that songs need melodies and lyrics too. The Hives were good for one song but their schtick lacks the licks.
There's a bit of nostalgia here for me since I listened to this band a good bit when I was about 13. I'd pretty much forgotten about them though, and I see why, they aren't particularly interesting. It makes sense to have them on the list though, since they were a big part of that garage rock revival, particularly in the UK.
debated giving this a 1 but ultimately i came up with a few tracks I enjoyed. Mostly just bleh. Everything sounded the same and kind of hurt my ears
Listened to on 3/6/23 2/5 Favorite song: hate to say i told you so This is definitely not my favorite new band. I felt like I was getting screamed at for 30 minutes and not in a fun way
Klassisk punk, det fint nok :^)
I know The Hives were supposed to be a hot ticket, but I find them very bleach.
jangly and not very musical.
1001 Compilations You Must Hear Before You're 18 PREFS : Main Offender, Die, All Right!, Outsmarted, The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime MOINS PREF : Supply and Demand
niet zo men ding eerste 2 nummers waren oke
Hate To Say I Told You So is a good radio song. The rest of the album is forgettable modern punk. Proving again, that I don't really like punk.
Sucked a bit now that it's not in its time and place. Had a banger in there somewhere but just reminded me of annoying bands when I was a teen
Thus was a compilation designed to boost their primotion/success in the UK so shouldn't be on the list so will be down marked. Fun throwaway indie band. Shouty and punky. Downvoted from 3 to 2.
Hate to say I told you so a good song but it's a compilation album which shouldn't be in a best albums list
Here I was, thinking Hate to Say I Told You So is a good song, when I got to listen to this album. Only then did it occur to me what kind of a freak accident that song is, surrounded as it is by songs that sound more or less the same and are generally indistinguishable from noise.
Ekki nýja uppáhalds.
I have this on CD, actually a compilation from two albums and various singles. Should it really be in this list then? Anyway, it's a frankenstein stitching up of the Kinks, Stooges, Dictators that doesn't really add anything to the mix except a crisp modern production. Thinking of ripping and binning.
It feels and seems weird that there is a modern band on here with an album that's a compilation. What makes this any different enough from other compilations, and what makes it more "allowed" than stuff like Queen's Greatest Hits or Changesonebowie? Besides that, this album was... fine? Really generic 2000's punk. Certainly not pop punk, but the complete lack of difference between songs, and this supposedly being the "best of"? Not terrible, but not impressive.
I loved when this wave of bands hit the scene. It was a refreshing and much needed transition away from the cesspool of nu metal. The albums that made it into my collection back then were VVV by The Hives. 3 White Stripes albums and the first 2 Strokes albums. I would rank The Hives 3rd among those bands. White Stripes and The Strokes share the top spot, depending on the day. VVV was an album that I didn't usually make it all the way through. I just tired of the album fairly quickly. ...Your New Favorite Band. I did not know that this existed. Now I'm not sure why it does and even more perplexed that it's on this list. It's a collection album, right? I did listen all the through it and it's just not that interesting. The best part about it was that it led me to a re-listen through of The Strokes debut. Wow, I've missed it...that's a 5 star album from me. Today's offering from The Hives...not so much. I'm on a disappointing run lately...average rating over the last 2 weeks? 2.5. Boo. 1 = bad 2 = average 3 = good 4 = great 5 = outstanding
A kind of overproduced, fairly poppy take on garage rock
Mistakes speed for talent.
4/10. Opening track is the best on the album by a long, long way!
3 songs on halfway through Supply and Demand. Don’t love it it’s alright. Good beat but not much else. I fw the guitars tho.
A functional copy of punk stereotypes toned down to meet a broader audience. Not really my cup of tea
Meh
This was a "compilation" rather than an actual "album" which might be why i feel this way; but most of the songs on here felt like they had no variety, which made for a pretty boring listen, otherwise I would've loved the energy.
Only song I knew was the first one, which was enough to know I was going to dislike this album
All sounded the same and it wasn’t great.
Pretty rough listen. I’ll let it slide at 2, I enjoyed “Mad Man” and “The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime.”
Overall a fine collection of songs - I'm just a little confused as to why this compilation would be on the list rather than a full album. Maybe the band had more of an impact outside of the US, but other than "Hate to say I told you so" I don't think I've heard any of these other songs - which are supposed to be their big hit singles!
Lol, the first public review of this album made me laugh: “Do you wish the Strokes were more punk and less good? Well hot damn do we have a band for you!” I don’t know if I agree with that yet, the first track “Hate to Say I Told You So” is a major jam though my ears didn’t like the ending ☹️. Okay, this album was like a metronome with some loud music around it. I was not a fan. 2/5.
Early 2000s fart noises. They seem to have taken The Dandy Warhols and made them irritating.
Meh. Not only isn't this my thing (it's not), but I think these guys are quite a bit less talented than some of the other folks playing this genre (which is not my thing). Overall: boring and monotonous.
As most of the other reviews, strange to have a compilation on the list. Also, I would've maybe enjoyed this when it came out, but just not my thing nowadays. Two stars because it is better than Kid Rock without a doubt.
This was a LOT for a Monday morning and it was not an album. Having said that it was solid garage rock. I will only give it a two out of five since it is not a proper album but it wasn’t bad.
Sounds a bit like overplayed 70s retro that was popular in early 2000s. I get the hives may be early to that game, but it’s not great
Not my thing unfortunately. First Listen?: Y Fav. Track(s): Hate to Say I Told You Rating: 1.7/5
Det var ok!
Nice. I like The Hives. Wait. Do I truly like the Hives? As I am listening through this album, I realize I haven't really heard many (if any) Hive songs outside of Hate to Say I Told You So. It now seems like there is a good reason for that.
Every song sounds the same was headed for 1 star but the last song saved it.
the first song was the single for a reason
The was a generic garage punk album. Really didn't bring anything new, definitely would not rate it as a "must listen".
According to Wikipedia, "the decision to release such a compilation was made with the intention of achieving mainstream success in the UK and other territories." That's pretty much all you need to know.
Not my favourite band.
With a name like that, I expected to either be blown away or offended by this compilation album - it committed instead the cardinal sin of just being quite boring to me. Maybe I missed something but I just couldn't muster a speck of investment
Was OK.
Punky, little whiney, greendayish
Uninspired. Some of the songs just sounded too much like The Kinks with a modern production and worse vocals. I also don't like compilation albums, so this album does not have a lot going for it. Aside from those things, there are some parts that have a nice groove to them, but that is the most positive thing i have to say about this.
Klinkt in eerste instantie wel leuk. Leuke melodie, beetje punkrock zang. Het is echter wel veel van hetzelfde. **
Really? Not my new favorite band, but it was enjoyable. Like to hear more of this one. 2.5/5
Got a couple good songs!
Hit single was good
Indie com a pegada punk acaba sendo repetitivo na coletânea.
The first couple of tracks have a lotta punch. This is the kind of album that would have been on my radar, had it been released in 1977 or earlier, but I don’t see it as relevant in 2001. It’s interesting that Wikipedia doesn’t mention any critical acclaim outside of 1001.
These garage punks really rock out with lots of energy. If they mixed it up a bit more like on The Hives are Law it would have held my interest more though.
Not bad, but nothing really special.
It was okay, didn’t do much for me.
Not great.
Best song: "Hate to Say I Told You So" but it still doesn't bump this album up to a 3 for me.
Forgettable album, definitely not my new favorite band as the album claims!
2.5/5
I didn't really care for it. Sort of Strokes -like but less my taste
The Hives weren't my new favourite band. Weren't my favorite either. The Strokes were (and remain) the best band from the garage-rock revival of the early-mid aughts. The White Stripes have grown on me in the years since. And the Vines, Hives, and all those others are sort of just footnotes in my mind. This record gets off to a big start with the lead-off single. That's a good move, but where do you go from there? In this case, you go into 11 other songs that are maybe sort-of almost as good. But it doesn't take more than a few tracks to realize this is getting old. Also, not to be too picky, but I don't buy the guitar tone. It feels like a studio-applied overdrive. That has to violate some kind of garage rock rule, right? Studio effects? These guys can write charming and catchy wild songs. Good thing because it saved them from a 1/5.
Full disclosure - I liked this album. They are not my "new favourite" - but it's a decent punk rock album (by a band with a great punk rock name). The problem is that it's about 30 years after a bunch of other (better) bands did the same thing. I'm not sure the Hives really improved upon the genre or offered anything new to it. So, good album. But, worthy of the list? Meh.
So-so garage rock. It was OK for a couple of songs but they are very samey and the "singing" gave me a headache after a while. Hate to Say I Told You So was a classic but not much else here is particularly interesting. Overall, I was disappointed. There's much better loud rock music to listen to elsewhere, so I'm not really sure why this here. Also, according to Wikipedia this is a compilation!
Generic punky band.
There are good punk vibes on this one, But it is quite boring, and the singer's voice is cringe. I like some songs of the Hives, but none of them are in this album.
Just an ok album in my opinion. The hives seem like a modern punk band that tries to sound mainstream. Like a cross over of arctic monkeys and 80s punk. I don’t really care for it. The singer isn’t that good and the instrumentals are pretty generic. 5.1/10
I had this when it came out and never realised it was a compilation so have marked it down 1. They're a bit of a one trick pony
Als 28 minuten te lang is om boeiend te blijven moet je je als band wel echt afvragen of je niet gewoon alleen maar singles moet uitbrengen. Hate to Say I told you so is namelijk een prima track!
Lekker energiek wel, maar ging me uiteindelijk toch wat tegenstaan met al dat geschreeuw.
Zouden de Hives moe van zichzelf worden? Ik word namelijk wel echt moe van de Hives.
False advertissment
Not at all
I blinked and missed most of this. Sounds like a kid that isn't really a bad kid having a rant at their indulgent parents in the kitchen of a nice detached house in the suburbs.
Not bad, but why are we including compilations?
A compilation of tracks from previous albums and EPs released with the intention of catapulting the Hives to commercial success. It worked (for a time), thanks to the Hives being stylish, having a sound that fitted the 2001 garage rock zeitgeist, and Howlin' Pelle Almqvist being a charismatic front-man. The album is fun, high energy and hurtles along at a pace of knots. 'Hate To Say I Told You So' is a banger, but beyond that there is little in the song writing to suggest that the Hives could be sustained as anything more than an entertaining late afternoon festival act. 2.5/5.
I remember when the Hives were on the radio, and seeing some performances on TV. Listening to a full album, the songs started running together about half way through. The album drifted into a tangle of static, yelling, and and incoherent guitar noise. I wasn't interested in the Hives when this album came out, and I'm not interested in them now.
Inte ems en skiva och lät inte bra.
Is this a compilation? The panning on this first track is nearly unbearable. Mad Man and The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime are ok. I should like this, I guess, but it’s boring, bloated and overdone. Forgettable and unoriginal.
Definitely NOT my new favorite band
Garagerock, distortion, højt tempo, 00’er
meh
Siri, what does music sound like if a band listens to Parklife on repeat and then hear Sham 69 just as they walk into the studio?
This isn't in my version of the list, but I have to wonder why it's on the list at all. Aside from my own negative feelings towards the early 2000s garage rock revival, this is a compilation. Why is (was) this on the list over an actual album by the band?
Certainly not my new favourite band… Musically it feels very incoherent, it’s just shouting at a microphone.
I did not enjoy this album at all, it felt like purse noise and no groove. The only song that is listenable to me is the first song.
Shite
Get thee hence.
Too punk rock Awful
Wieder nichts für mich. Einfach nur Geschrei!
Not my cup of tea. I would've enjoyed this when I was an angry teen. Reminds me of "Shameless". This type of music is good in TV shows/movies but I wouldn't listen to it by itself
Not for me. 1/5
I only really started to enjoy it when Spotify rolled over to similar songs. Tbh every Hives song sounds the same to me..
1.5 not my jam
I just don’t like punk. 1
I don’t like this type of whiny music. It’s not distinctive in any way.
Your new LEAST favorite bank. There, I fixed it for you
Typical 2000s punk rock, its loud and fun but honestly it's nothing special imo
Well - that was nasty, brutish and short. The short part was the best part.
Too metal too shouty for me
Nein, das wird nicht meine Lieblingsband!
No thanks
Did not like
the guitars kinda sound like shit
Oh good, a whiny man but this time with *distortion*
Could not find
nah
Could not finish this
You surely meant "Pretty far from your new favourite band", right? Right...?
Wasnt a vibe
Average or less.
Unfortunately, not all the vibe I am going for today. Or on any typical day. Made it through 4 tracks, then sampled the rest for somewhere between 10 and 30 seconds each.
Maybe it’s pedantic, but this is a compilation drawn from the band’s first two albums plus an EP, so it doesn’t properly belong on this list at all. It sounds like a compilation too, with the music from each recording represented here sounding fairly different. If you have to choose a sort of “best of” album as a representation, maybe the band doesn’t belong on here… Anyway. In the earlier part of the 2000s I read an interview with Jim O’Rourke in aMAZEzine where he lamented the subsidies that European musicians were getting. I disagreed with him then, because if we’re paying taxes, why shouldn’t we use some of that money to support art and culture, but in my advancing years, I kind of see his point. There’s a certain way that European bands that play the festival circuits sound. They’re polished, they appeal to masses of people crowded into a field in the daytime. I’m sure it’s a good way to make a living, and when I listen to this so-called album, it sounds like festival music. It’s competent and catchy garage rock, except that it’s meant for big stages. And that doesn’t work for me. I like this stuff when it sounds like it could go off the rails at any time, that it sounds like it’s made by people with day jobs. This isn’t that. I’m not sure why of all the garage bands of the era this particular band made the list, but I’m not digging it.
Much closer to my least favourite band.
Never really took to these guys. For me, as the 90s rolled around into the 2000s, I feel like the indie/alternative bubble had burst to a degree. I never really got the gimmick with The Hives, or the sense of humour, or the music for that matter. It all seems too insincere. What was exciting about 1994 had become forced and predictable by the end of the decade - too many bands were trying too hard to surf the alternative wave after Britpop, and I've always viewed The Hives of a symptom of that.
Overblown, overhyped. Nothing original.
Can't find a lead singer for your band? No problem, get some guy to shout instead.
eh. not my thing.
I was perhaps a little harsh on the White Stripes when I suggested they only had three songs, given The Hives seemingly have just one.
Good for Instagram sports reels
I’m a soft touch for 2000s pop rock, but outside the first track there is little joy in this pretty dire corporate pap. Hives:Stooges as Jet:Black Crowes (although that probably gives too much credit to the Black Crowes).
not my new favorite band...
Waste of time - landfill indie in its purest form.
I dont like best of albums
comp album and not even good
wszystko na jedno kolano daje vibe muzyki pod stranger things
Temu Stooges. When your mom says "We have Iggy Pop at home". In retrospect this whole early 2000s rock revival is corny.
Not a fan
My new favourite band? Yeah, nah I don't think so.
Sounded like a commercial
Didn’t like
not my style
Sometimes I think albums are chosen because of the one hit on them. Nothing about this album is revolutionary and the hit in question is Scott Pilgrim-ass music
Lool no, no me gusta el garage rock, solo guarde una canción pero pq no cantan en esa JAJAJAJ, no me gustó el album 1 estrella
mildly annoying
They’re loud. They feel like they don’t care. It’s the punk aesthetic, I guess. I’m just unsure of why a compilation from multiple albums is on this list. That sort of defeats the point. I could probably take my most hated bands and find 10 songs over a whole discography that would make one ok album. And for that reason, this one ain’t for me, dog.
Not quite
Most certainly not my new favourite band.
Not my new favourite band
Rumgeschreie.
Why the actual fuck is this on this list?
Too much yelling, not music really.
Meh
A waste of 28 minutes. There have been a number of poorly sequenced live albums on here that I thought were stupid additions to this list, but I can't believe a compilation album of bad garage punk songs from a one-hit-wonder band made the cut. At least live albums typically have a story or personality. Really a huge disappointment and a contender for one of the worst uses of a spot on this list. 1/5
Terrible
Is The Hives on the list because I am in Sweden?
I am not saying you have to drugs to listen to this album. But I am saying drugs would make it more bearable.
-*No music, only noise, squawking and screaming
Dosta loše brate. Ovo mi je album za Need for Speed igricu (kvaliteta je usporediva), birati bojlere ili sparivati čarape iz veša. Ma hajde. 1/5, 1.5/10
Back when The Hives came out, I wrote them off as being a pale imitation of The Stooges based on their singles. Listening to this today, I'm not convinced I was wrong. Granted, there are far worse bands in the world to emulate, but that doesn't make it okay. This collection of their songs occasionally makes some decent noise ("The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime" is my favorite, mostly due to the lack of vocals), but overall I just can't take it seriously or find much to enjoy about it.
It's not Turbonegro.
Pre-listening thoughts: putting a greatest hits album on the list feels like cheating actually. Like yeah it’s good enough for the list duh you handpicked your best work idiot????? But it’s like up on this list with artists’ normal albums that weren’t cherry picked for their best material which feels like you’re just setting this band up to either look really good against everyone else or be embarrassed when even their greatest hits is worse than an artist’s normal album. Which like if Queen’s greatest hits were allowed here it would blow almost every album on this list out of the water. Or like ABBA gold? Everyone else is like chopped liver compared to those compilations which is why they’re not on here cause it would be dumb. Post/during listening thoughts: greatest hits more like greatest MIDS am I right guys haha. No wait in all seriousness this is booty cheeks. It’s so generic, and because it’s a compilation, there’s no story, no creative cohesion to latch on to, no flow to the track list at all. If you know this band this might be better but as a first impression it sucks. It’s also their last impression with me cause I’m never listening to their stuff again. 2/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: definitely not Fav tracks: maybe the instrumental one at the end? Least fav tracks: the rest
The worst of the three big y2k 'guitars are back' indie rock garage revival bands. The vocals are so grating. The riffs are very high energy and can be fun, but its super frenetic, unfocused and there is way too much treble. I like the garage punk sound, but it's really just an incredibly annoying album and the whole visual marketing thing with them made them just made them seem like an industry hype band.
This was I mean... Uh... Uhh.... it was fine but just bland. Vocals were annoying. I would never ever go out of my way to listen to this. It was just tinny and unpleasant and felt so emotionless like, there was nothing behind the music just sounds. Just not good.. Not good.
Learn to play more than 4 chords mate fucking hell
