Reviews (page 2 of 9)

Not only is this album a wonderful representation of youth before the coming summer of love, it is also an album that has some of the best American pop that was coming out at the time. I am a huge fan of the production on this album and although the lyrics can be simple at times that aids to more of the songs rather than detracts for me. It’s a genius record. Fav tracks: all of them

Rock clássico dos anos 60 somado a uma sequência dos melhores rock ballads que eu já ouvi, tudo no mesmo álbum. Sem uma música ruim.

Love it

Great album. Iconic songs. I enjoyed the first half more but it was great overall. A real changing point for the Beach boys and ones that seemingly changed the direction of pop music from very simple to more complex music. Even if the lyrics weren’t quite there yet.

☆☆☆☆☆

Legendary.

I love the beach boys

da beac boys

I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I had summer fun. I like The Beach Boys. I’m so sorry

Pure 60s joy with impeccable harmonies, what to add?

ну это база это знать надо

Fun, great songs, perfect harmonies, all in 29 minutes. I loved all of it.

I love the Beach Boys so this was a nice Christmas Day album! Love the whole tone of the album, the laidback guitar with surf vibes, the killer harmonised vocals. The songwriting is evocative of a time of innocence in life and in American culture. Its carefully designed to evoke that, so it's kind of a trick, but I don't mind. I like their more "ambitious" albums a little more, but this one is immensely listenable and enjoyable. I love the confident concision of doing 11 great songs in under 30 mins. The final track of random chatter is pointless, which is only a minor inconvenience. 4.5*

2nd best Beach boys album, basically Pet Sounds before Pet Sounds. It has the same pessimistic sensitive love songs, especially on the second side, which are countered by light orchestration and gorgeous vocals. Please Let Me Wonder is a top 4 Beach Boys song of all time imo. 5/5

I remain partial to the Beach Boys. I blame Nick Jr occasionally running the Muppets music video cover of "Kokomo" when I was a kid (I understand "Kokomo" is not their best work - the Beach Boys or the Muppets). I wouldn't cite this album as a masterpiece the way I think of "Pet Sounds," but it still lands quite well for me. Pop beach party is a winning album formula. Highlights here: "Help Me, Ronda," "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)," and "Do You Wanna Dance?" I could maybe do without the sandwich chatter track.

So good. The Beach Boys start growing up!

Never heared this album before (aside from couple of hits). This one is so much fun. Will definitely go back to it again. Almost as fun as Pet Sounds.

This is the sound of a certain time

Lowkey radiant.

5/5 get better w every listen feels like spring and summer classic songs

For my Money, the best of the pre pet sounds beach boys.

this was sick, every song slapped and i liked the end, made me get a more personal feel with the band at the end as i haven’t heard them not sing. not close to pet sounds but as an album back in the hay day, it’s sick

There's a lot you could say about THE BEACH BOYS TODAY! in terms of its place in the band's history. To begin with, it was their first album to step away from singing about hot rods and surfing. Not a single mention of either on the whole record! On top of that, thanks to Brian Wilson quitting touring to work in the studio full time, it was far more musically sophisticated than anything they'd done to that point except for their Christmas record. In tandem with that album, they seemed to be laying the exact groundwork for PET SOUNDS to come out a year later and revolutionize the whole game. For those, there's a good argument to be made that THE BEACH BOYS TODAY! is the first- or second-most important album the band ever recorded — maybe third if you wanna be technical and count SMiLE. However, I don't wanna factor any of that into my review of/babble about this album. After all, I've got no ear for musical complexities; what does it matter to me what specific chords are getting used? I'm sure I can register what's going on on some deeper level, but don't expect me to write a thesis paper about it. On top of that, the lyrics... Well, there are some songs where the lyrics matter more than others, I feel like. There are also some incredibly spare lyrics that've aged worse than others, but instead of making a scene I just choose to blame them on Mike Love and leave it at that. So then why do I still consider THE BEACH BOYS TODAY! to be the second or third best album they've done? For one, it depends on how I'm feeling about SURF'S UP that day (it's number two now). But beyond that, I'd say it honestly is because it exists in-between periods of the band's history. It's the transition point between their surf music and the full-on orchestral stuff PET SOUNDS would have, and it's such an interesting combination. Even if I can't hear the specifics and praise the album for that, it's still intriguing that there's clearly more going on in the instrumentation than in something like... I'unno, "Chug-A-Lug"? And that's even before the unique instruments come in. I mean, I just really truly love the individual halves that're being mushed together here (I don't own ENDLESS SUMMER on vinyl and two CD copies of PET SOUNDS for nothing), so this whole disc is a damn treat. But let's take this album one side at a time. The first is dedicated to all of the uptempo songs, and is where we get "Dance, Dance, Dance" and the original "Help Me, Rhonda". They're all good, fun songs, but I gotta admit, they're all kind of overshadowed by the crown jewel of this side: "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)". Imagine, in the middle of a record side about dancing and girls, suddenly there's this song where a boy anxiously ponders his adulthood, including if he'll love for the rest of his life the woman he marries. It's a remarkably mature song when put next to "Little Deuce Coupe". It's a wistful song, but backed with the instrumentation I can't help but feel like there's some kind of excitement, too. Like, the boy's worried about growing up, but at the same time, he kinda can't wait to find out what he'll be like? Seriously, this is the most musically advanced thing on the first side, and it's just an absolute wonder to behold. And let me tell you, in light of not only Brian's passing earlier this, but everything that would happen in his life past this post... Goodness. In short, it's an absolute 11/10 song for side one if there ever was one. Now, if side one finds most of itself outweighed by one singularly amazing song, side two's are way more consistent across the board. This is the side with the slower tempo ballads, and, quite frankly, it's the **best** side? Like, The Beach Boys are always amazing with the harmonies, no matter what tempo you're listening to them out. However, I don't think there's anything that can quite beat a ballad Beach Boys harmony, and this is a side full of them. There's really no one specific song I wanna highlight; they all fade into each other as this beautifully lush stream of vocals and instrumentation. Most people would say "fading into each other" is a bad thing, but to me it just highlights how consistent the side is. You can't just listen to one on their own; they all flow into each other like a suite and it paints this gorgeous sound picture in your head. Like, not to the extent of something like PET SOUNDS, or maybe even the last three songs on SURF'S Up, but if there was any side on here I wanted to revisit as soon as possible, it was side two. Just absolutely marvelous stuff. (These are apparently the "crusty brothel sheets" that one review is talking about. Honestly now.) And then there's "Bull Sessions With 'Big Daddy'". ... And that is exactly as much attention as that track deserves. (Seriously, there's nothing wrong with it; it's just an excerpt from a 20 minute interview, but, like... Whyyyy is it here? Do yourself a favor and just close the album on "In The Back Of My Mind"; it works way better that way.) THE BEACH BOYS TODAY!, lemme tell you, is the band's first masterwork. It's not without its flaws, of course, but it was the first album where they weren't just hinting at their potential. It's their most realized project yet, and seriously, side two is **so good**. I mean no shade to side one, of course; it still has "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" and a buncha fun songs to dance to, but goodness me, side two is just that great. And if I'm gonna interrupt my closing thoughts to gush like that, well... But yeah: today, yesterday, tomorrow, whenever, this is a great album. Without a doubt, one of the absolute greatest they ever made. And when I grow up, no matter how old I get, I'll always be holdin' it with PET SOUNDS, SURF'S UP and FRIENDS in the back of my mind. (And seriously, all y'all 1's makin' faces at Brian over the lyrics: just blame Mike Love. He's a creep and he's right there; it's not that hard.)

Starts out as your typical early Beach Boys fare (good), but then that second side happens, and you can clearly tell where the seeds that eventually led to Pet Sounds (and SMiLE, to an extent) germinated. 4.5 bumped up to 5.

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. When we got “Pet Sounds”, I very specifically mentioned that when my brain still thinks of The Beach Boys, it conjures up the poppier stuff, like “Surfin’ U.S.A.” or “Good Vibrations”. The entire first half of this album has finally scratched that itch; the first 6 tracks here are that poppier, doo-wop version of the Beach Boys sort of getting it all out there for the people who like it. I’m a total sucker for it, so I think they all work; certainly heavy on the repetition, and not the most compelling from a lyrical point, but in terms of a kind of infectious, joyful energy, it’s just there in spades. It’s nothing special, but it’s fun, especially once some key changes start to enter in. The last 5 tracks (because I cannot possibly call that nothingburger of a burger-filled interview a “track”) act as a really strong precursor to the expanded effort on “Pet Sounds”, and while it’s certainly more of a prototype here as opposed to the swirling, meticulous & laborious work Brian Wilson put into “Pet Sounds”, I think it’s just as effective in terms of bridging the gap. The harmonies from the group are on full display, and when they enter the ears like that, it’s just blissful. Past that, the lyricism just feels more concrete, giving a bit more of a storytelling edge. They’re (thankfully) not trying to be Bob Dylan or anything, but it’s just slightly more mature, and it feels far more adjacent to the folksier side of pop/rock that would come into vogue for the latter half of the 1960s. Realistically, the only reasons I’m at a 4.5 instead of a flat 5 are because of two things: the “school dance” vibes of the first 6 tracks wearing just a little thin, even with how fast each track is, and the interview being… well, totally fucking useless. Maybe a little fun, if you want to know their lunch orders, but it’s the most pointless “bonus” track I think we’ve gotten on the list. Regardless, it’s an easy enough bump up to a 5. I’m sure there’s a lot more that could be said here, but I think at its core, it’s just a nice album. It’s a good blend of the doo-wop Beach Boys & the critical “Pet Sounds” acclaim, and if nothing else, it’s a fun, breezy 27 minute record (again, not counting the last "track"). This is the third & final Beach Boys album on the list, and that’s a straight 15/15; good picks for the list, and clearly, I need to listen to more of them. Maybe not the Mike Love era, though. Once again, thank you Brian.

A classic for a reason. I also hope the same things that turned me on as a kid still turn me on when I grow up.

just peak Beach Boys tunes. not much else to say. Nothing beats those harmonies.

Just a great collection of fun beach tunes. Plus that second verse on Help Me Rhonda goes hard as fuck, dude!

Primed to have my ratings be verrrry different than Jake's, but I love some of these songs and they are pillars of American music of the 20th century. The recording is tight and harmonies are great. Is Brian Wilson one of the five most influential American musicians - I think so. Do You Want to Dance, probably my favorite track, but several good ones

I really enjoyed it it was better than pet sounds in my opinion I just loved how charming it was a great listen

A classic album and a fitting tribute to Brian Wilson!

Crazy that I got this album a day after Brian Wilson died. It’s a 5. Easy.

The Beach Boys never miss.

a band i can't really be unbiased about. i grew up on the beach boys and brian wilson's music and i will always have a soft spot for the pre-pet sounds era of the beach boys, and this album in particular. for me, this is really the first big step towards the complexity of pet sounds in terms of songwriting and production for brian and the beach boys. the added complexities here over songs like "fun fun fun" are great, but still below where brian wilson would take the group in the upcoming years. that's not to say that there aren't more "poppy" pop songs here - "do you wanna dance" and "dance, dance, dance" are beach boys classics in their own right - but what i always come to this album for are tracks like "when i grow up to be a man," "she knows me too well," "in the back of my mind," and especially the constantly criminally underrated "please let me wonder." the only dings i will give this album are the inferior version of "help me, r(h)onda" and "bull session with the big daddy" which is a skit track that is sort of an expected "feature" of their previous albums. but the harmonies here are as good as ever and the production is, of course, fantastic. to me, this is the pinnacle of the first "era" of the beach boys. better things to come, for sure, but a great album in its own right.

What a great album & how timely with the loss if the great Brian Wilson

I was going to listen to them anyways for bw.

Simon!

It’s nice

RIP Brian Wilson Great album. Nothing else to say.

Rest in peace, Brian Wilson. 10/10

Totally great! That's all

I love it

Brian Wilson is truly a genius, and you can hear the roots of Pet Sounds in this album. I don’t get why they put the last track on the album though.

I liked this album!!

I really enjoyed this. I don't know if it's just because there's so much attention following Brian's death... but I've also been paying a bit more attention to them in recently after watching the Disney+ doc... either way, I'm much more appreciative of the Beach Boys in recent years than I ever have been. Today's record has a small handful of recognizable songs (Help Me Rhonda, Do You Wanna Dance, When I grow Up)... it's not Pet Sounds, but knowing what we know now, you can totally see something like Pet Sounds coming. I, for one, am enjoying this record today. When I was a kid, when their music was only like 20 years old, I only thought of them as the "Fun Fun Fun" band that played on the oldies station. Generationally, I had no awareness of their impact. Now I know better. I can only imagine what it was like to hear this music when it was brand new... like hearing the Beatles or Stones or Led Zeppelin for the first time... nothing else like it. My generation had a similar thing with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and STP... that's all I can equate it to. Many reviewers have come down pretty hard on this record, but I for one enjoyed it. Five stars all day.

Very apt I got this in the day of Brian Wilson’s passing. A beautiful record reminds me of chasing that endless summer

5* What am I, fucking stupid?

Got this the day after the unfortunate passing of Brian Wilson, so it is all the more poignant. But Beach Boys always packed a massive emotional wallop. Soaring harmonies (the best ever produced by man, surely) and dramatic wall of sound production disguised as wholesome little pop songs. Don't be fooled - this is some of the best stuff ever produced in any art form and came right from the depths of the human soul.

This is so good, showcasing how great The Beach Boys were even before pet sounds. Impeccable vocal harmonies, beautiful arrangements. It all just sounds so timeless.

RIP Brian Wilson. As soon as I heard the news, I put on Pet Sounds, then Surf's Up, then Sunflower, then Love You, then my 100ish song "Best of the Beach Boys" playlist: Do You Wanna Dance, When I Grow Up (To Be a Man), Help Me Rhonda, Please Let Me Wonder and In the Back of My Mind from this album are on it. A lot of people discount pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys music as juvenile and underdeveloped, but there are already so many great songs with both the incredible arrangements and harmonies, and the lyrics which elevate being a teenager in mid 20th century America into universal truths about love, life and death which everyone loves about Pet Sounds. I got the Phil Spector Christmas album on Christmas and a Beach Boys album the day after Brian Wilson died, I wonder if the site owner manipulates the generator or if those are both coincidences. Anyway, I already got Pet Sounds a while ago, I obviously gave it 5 stars, with a one word review: "Masterpiece". The BB albums I mentioned above deserve 5 stars (despite Student Demonstration Time), this album isn't one I listen to front to back that often, mostly just the songs I mentioned. I am quite generous with my ratings, and I like this album a lot more than some of the albums I've given 4 stars. Fuck it, I'll give it a 5, the Beach Boys made so much great music that this isn't even my favourite pre-Pet Sounds album (that's All Summer Long), but it's still a 5 star album.

Like most others, I’m listening to The Beach Boys the day after news of Brian Wilson’s passing broke. In a world where genius is thrown around a lot, Brian Wilson truly was and I would argue that he was the 20th century’s greatest songwriter and the way he crafted his songs was way ahead of his time. Regarding today’s album, this one is fairly standard Beach Boys fare, but the seeds of Pet Sounds can be found here. It’s hard to be objective given the day, but I think this is likely a 7/10 that I’m pushing to 9/10 due to the day.

RIP Brian Wilson

Rest in peace, Brian Wilson

Despite being born in the nineties, the Beach Boys music has always been a comfort to me. I vividly recall standing in the train station waiting to go and visit my now-fiancée at uni and stressing about the journey, so putting on my headphones and listening to Do You Wanna Dance and it perked me right up. The music, the harmonies, and most importantly the fun heard throughout this album is dazzling. I’m really quite upset about the death of Brian Wilson.

RIP Brian Wilson. Nothing quite hits nostalgia like the sound of The Beach Boys. & the underlying melancholy (expect for their beach bops) have always really struck me.

As much as the label seemed to haunt him, Brian Wilson was a genius. For the second day in a row, we're listening to a 22-year-old at the height of his powers. I have always found Beach Boys songs, especially the later work, to possess an almost mystic longing. It sounds like pop - but it's deeper than pop. No skips on this album, dazzling arrangements, and I really enjoyed the early cut of Help Me, Rhonda (more stripped down and uke-forward than the smash hit single version released later in 1965). I feel like I can hear shades of Pet Sounds building in the background on the second half.

This makes me feel like I’m going to the soda fountain to share a milkshake with two straws. This put me in such a great mood for the day

To me a 5/5 album because every song put a smile on my face despite my wanting to cry. Their songs are just fun and so uniquely them. You’d recognize a beach boys song anywhere but it’s not boring.

I'd be happy if it was Beach Boys day every day on this site... pure bliss. I didn't know many of the songs on this album aside from Dance, Dance, Dance and Help me Rhonda. Favorite song: Do You Wanna Dance?

An amazing album. I’d never listened to this one all the way through, so while I’m surprised that Pet Sounds wasn’t the chosen Beach Boys album, I was happy with it nonetheless! RIP Brian Wilson

A lot I could write here but I don't feel like it this morning, instead I am just going to listen to this album again and feel grateful for the transcendent qualities of pop music!!! Fav song: I'm So Young

Always enjoy listening to The Beach Boys! Lot's of great songs.

Een bop!

Zo’nnnn goede vibe

Goated - RIP Brian Wilson

I've never listened to this album before. What can I say, it's amazing. Help Me Rhonda is so, so good. The cover of Do You Wanna Dance is amazing. It might be bias from BWs death, but I really enjoyed this. There was so much skill in putting this together. A great bridge album into Pet Sounds.

😭rip Brian I feel the first full album where you see Brian’s influence and creativity start to really come full bloom. Fuck You Mike Love

An interesting album, as this seems like a bridge between the old surfer type music and the new pet sounds. There are subtle musical innovations at play here that will influence the Beatles 'Rubber Soul' and other experimentations. And of course, all the work of the great musical Genius, Brian Wilson RIP

Timely! Some of my favorites on here

excellent

I mean, every song is a banger. 10/10 no notes

Very fun and beachy

RIP Brian Wilson

Very applicable listen the day after Brian Wilson's passing. Top notch.

Not sure fit this was planned or not but this popped up as my album of the day -the day after Brian Wilson passed away. What an absolute legend, he will be missed.

I find it hard to rate The Beach Boys albums because they’re also good. I didn’t really appreciate them when they first came out. I thought they were just you know a light beach band. But as I’ve grown and listen to them more most of these songs are pretty amazing. And I think they’ve really stood the test of time.

RIP Brian Wilson, and thank you.

Brian Wilson died yesterday and today I get a Beach Boys album. It's a lot like when I got Phil Spector's Christmas album on Christmas Day. Seems a bit too coincidental. Speaking of Phil Spector...you can hire his influence on many of these songs with the "Wall of Sound" behind the Beach Boys. The instrumentation is a song of its own. The hits most people know are here: Do You Wanna Dance, When I Grow Up, Help Me Rhonda and Dance Dance Dance. There was a lot of concern here about the ability to dance, apparently. The album tracks are also really strong here. It's difficult to pinpoint one Beach Boys album that must be heard from early in their career. There needs to be a Beach Boys album and this one feels like a good representation of where the Beach Boys were and where they were going before Pet Sounds. Really great album.

Peak Brian Wilson

Первая песня мне понравилась, насчет остальных не уверена 🤔. В принципе звучание группы мне нравится, но нужно больше времени чтоб послушать альбом полностью, пока поставлю 5, ТК мне нравится слушать

10/10 great wonderful album R.I.P Brian Wilson

No skips. Favorite: “Help Me, Rhonda” R.I.P. Brian Wilson.

Rust zacht, Brian.

Repeat listen

I miss you Brian Wilson

I love The Beach Boys. I think my Dad had one of their greatest hits albums when I was a kid, because I know these songs so deeply. “Kokomo” was probably my favorite song growing up, which I later learned is considered the worst Beach Boys song ever. Pet Sounds is obviously incredible, but I still love me just their good ol’ beach songs like this album. Incredible vocals, beautiful productions, good vibes.

I thought this was a random generator lol RIP Brian Wilson 6/20/42 - 6/11/25

My brain makes a game of mapping any Beach Boys song to something off of Pet Sounds 😆Various horn parts remind me of Just Wasnt Made For These Times, the chorus singing throughout (esp Help Me Rhonda, Im So Young) is SO playful without losing an occasional dark edge (maximum melancholy) This isnt Pet Sounds, but damn is it good. Sonically, this fits well with really EARLY 60s stuff (released in 65’), but its themes & sounds are more evolved (maybe an end of that simple & happy, 60s vibe before the super concepty, psychedelic, dark and punky state of history). And the ending with Bull Session was fantastic! I was cheesing so hard listening to the band talk about their experiences in Europe. Becoming a favorite early 60s sounding album for me. Adding it to my HIGHLY sought after list of Vinyl To Get when I inevitably undertake that hobby 😆

Saw on reddit that the generator gods forced the algorithm today to feed us Beach Boys - love it. RIP Brian. Our spin through Pet Sounds cast Beach Boys and Brian Wilson in a new light for me - felt like I never really got them until recently. But I assumed that post-Pet Sounds would be the only albums for me, and everything before was just the sound that Brian was resisting or reacting to with Pet Sounds. I was wrong, even at this point, these songs have more depth than the surf vibes first suggest. And now reading the wikipedia, I know this is considered the departure album, a ramp up to Pet Sounds. I loved this. A plug for Panda Bear - Sinister Grift. One of the better albums of this year, and definitely heavily influenced by Brian's sound.

Ah, the Beach Boys! How can one group so perpetually capture sunshine and a youthful American innocence over the decades? Their music is an endless orange summer, tinged with nostalgia. Brian Wilson's writing of vocal harmonies is unparalleled, and the Boys follow his lead with perfect execution. Following Brian's passing last month, I put on Pet Sounds and Smile for my 9-year-old, and he approves. Still good! I imagine the theme in "I'm So Young" to continue rolling around Brian's head and evolving into Pet Sounds' "Wouldn't It Be Nice." The softest of soft rock, one may complain that it is lacking grit, rebellion, or testosterone. Ballz, even. I prefer to see the Beach Boys as an extension of Brian's gentle spirit and demeanor, and I say this with very little knowledge of their story or extensive catalogue. Still, it's my Beach Boys reality, and I'd prefer to imagine Brian's heart as clean and pure (like Daniel Johnston), regardless of whatever the actual truth is. I never heard this complete album, but it encapsulates a time that I never knew, when I imagine my parents were a young couple just starting out in life together. This music isn't my go-to style, but it does deserve representation on this list, and who better to represent it? No one. Not one.

RIP Brian Wilson Top album

Perfect

28 minuten het beste van The Beach Boys! Goede lengte, bijna alle nummers goed. Geweldig gemaakt!

This came on my rotation the day after Brian Wilson passed away. Very fitting

What a different direction! I knew they had a few albums that were psychedelic to say the least, but when you influence the Beatles, where do you stop. This would’ve been the battle I would’ve love to see, not the stones vs Beatles. Brian Wilson with his catchy pop lines and musical ability to create a sonic scape of sound pleasing and terrifying to the listener. Are they started off as a go lucky California boy band, but they matured to new heights in their career.

masterpiece

As always fun and harmonious

iconic!

10/10 album

Amazing harmonies

Amazing. This gave the Ramones their career, so it deserves five stars just for that fact. Beautiful harmonies. No wonder it's lasted

A favorite from back in the day

Klassiker!

One of the greatest live albums

classic

One of my favourite Beach boy albums. The surf rock side and more ballad side, ignoring the goof piece that ends it. Moving from the earlier album sounds to the more evolved wannabe Spector sound on the one record. It’s fun and sad at the same time. Yeah it’s very mid sixties, sound and content, so what, revisionism can be so tiresome especially in these so enlightening times (irony). 5 Star.

Really enjoyed this album

Girl yes

Who doesn't love some Beach Boys? Especially during "in-between-mas." This one has one of my favorites: "Do you wanna dance?" I also love "Dance, dance, dance."

Life, Love, Sun, Happyness

Arguably the greatest party record of the 1960s... https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-the-beach-boys-today?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

There is simply no denying that Brian Wilson is one of the greatest songwriters of all time and a true savant when it comes to composing harmonies. This is where the genius truly begins. Influencing everyone from The Beatles to The Ramones, Today is close to perfect and at times just as untouchable as Pet Sounds. 4.5 / 5

Love love love the beach boys. Baroquial and vibrant melodies paired with a phenomenal dancy and light rythmn. Its almost beach jazz. Imagine creating the sound of southern california on analog devices and perfecting the modern pop song. Its incredible. This album encapsulates the pivot from boy band to artist.

What a great album. I've always been a fan of the beachboys since my mum used to play their records when I was a kid. Some very good tracks on here such as When I Grow Up, Do you Wanna Dance and the cherry on top Help me Ronda! Brian Wilson at his best putting together experimental sounds and clever harmonies and melodies. It's all too easy to listen to Greatest Hits albums but we really need to listen to the original albums and hear the tracks we wouldn't normally get to hear. 5

There is nothing wrong with the Beach Boys.

One side of surf-rock hits or near-hits with the trademark harmonies from the Californian band, plus one side of even more sophisticated arrangements and chord sequences for slower, more "intimate" cuts, foretelling *Pet Sounds*. The whole thing equals... two sides of Beach Boys happiness. Critics have always loved this one. Out of the band"s classic early period, album *Surfin' USA* is probably even more iconic for the fans. But it would be a shame not to select a second album from that early period, and *The Beach Boys Today!* is the most likely candidate for that. Then add those albums from the band's two subsequent "eras": *Pet Sounds*, *Smile*, *Sunflower*, *Surf's Up*, and maybe *Carl And The Passions* if you have room left. But I guess all that is a story for another time, kiddies... 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 9.5 for more general purposes (5 + 4.5) Number of albums left to review: 65 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 405 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 232 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 299

This album is an excellent bridge from early breezy Beach Boys to the more complex and mature later Beach Boys with the complex lush arrangements. This song is recorded perfectly and works together. An excellent snapshot of the band growing as artists.

The band the Beatles wish they’d been. 4.5

Anything by the Beach Boys is good.

I really really enjoyed listening to this. Some songs I knew, a bunch I didn't, but all with that signature Beach Boys sound and what harmonies. I'll be gladly listening to this one many times.

Simply incredible. There is still some of the simpler, less significant Beach Boys sound here, but the arrangements are complex and gorgeous. There is a real Wall of Sound vibe and much more lyrical sophistication. I listened to this twice in a row.

This was a fun album! I really love the sound of the Beach Boys, even if I didn't love some of the lyrics (the poor girlfriend in "She Knows Me Too Well"). I especially liked "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" and "Help Me, Ronda".

I mean, I do remember being a teenager and I probably would have connected with these songs.

This album is the best!! It put me in such a good mood, and there are so many bangers on it. Made me feel like I was chilling on the beach mid-summer with absolutely no care in the world!

Not being married is HARD

Absolutely brilliant. What's not to like about The Beach Boys. Brilliant harmonies. They are the sound of summer. Makes me want to put on a pair of Vans and grab my surfboard. Great stuff. 👍

The beginning of the beach boys musical revolution. I love it

Gute-Laune-Musik! Das Leben ist oft grau und öde genug. Eigener, unverwechselbarer Stil. 5/5

One of the best Beach Boys albums. So pure and sad and fun.

I grew up on surf rock. I love it

brilliant

such a laidback and carefree album. Beautiful harmonies, and the remastered nature adds some tasteful adjustments to leveling and mixing.

Boy we went a little environmentalist on this one my dude

Sun, surf, phantastic vocal arrangements. Wilson quality work.

Such a fun listen!

Beautiful, listened to both mono and stereo. Brian Wilson is the 👑

Solid album. Fantastic vocal harmonies. Music like this is always a welcome listen.

I don’t think I’d heard this particular album before. It’s interesting to hear the period between classic surf Beach Boys and Pet Sounds Beach Boys.

All catchy songs, no skips.

Another classic!

Very good! Singing in Falsetto before it was cool.

Actually very down for this today. Lessgooooo. This shit goes undeniably hard. Beach boys can be easily labeled as corny old school music but you listen and its just amazing. Every track is so beautiful. I loved this. I think I have it on vinyl, i hope so.

So great to re listen to this seminal release.

Iconic and happy as hell. Always great production and perfect vocals and harmonies.

Just sit back and let these delicious vocal harmonies surf over you. Maybe just don’t pay so much attention to the lyrics. I don’t think this will be everyone’s cup of tea, but man, I’m just a sucker for the 60s surf sound. This album gives off the best kind of feeling I get from listening to music; a sense of nostalgia and longing for a time I was never even a part of.

вау!очень коротенький..

Classic. I've been listening to these songs for basically my entire life, so this shit is part of my DNA at this point.

If Pet Sounds often gets compared to The Beatles' Sgt Pepper, then I would say this parallels their Rubber Soul. It is an album that is mid-emergence of their previous style, and transitionary sound that blends their past and their future. And god damn is it good. The songs are all so fun and catchy, it explores unique and interesting ideas, the intentional sequencing of the songs really pushing forward the album format, and it's orchestration and instrumentation pushed the boundaries of what rock could do.

Superb - the Beach Boys are tops!

I had a great mate at my last workplace (where I worked for 20 years) named Dermot. A music nut, he was always burning cd’s & leaving them on my desk to surprise me. One day I lobbed at work to find a cd with the title : The Godlike Genius That Is…..BRIAN WILSON. If the house I live in ever catches alight & I only have time to grab one cd, that’s the one I’m grasping for. For years I thought it was some rare compilation, but turns out it was a collection put together by a friend of Dermot’s. It is a joy, and it celebrates the eloquence of Wilson’s lyrics, music, production, etc. Not a bunch of hit singles. There were 5 tracks from Pet Sounds & 4 tracks from the Today album & I knew none of those 4 tracks - the glorious I’m So Young ( a cover version of a 1958 release by The Students); Please Let Me Wonder; She Knows Me Too Well; & Kiss Me Baby. These are the first 4 tracks on Side 2, & are widely regarded as a precursor to the majesty of Pet Sounds, although, for me, I don’t think The Beachboys ever sounded any better than this. As for Side 1, it opens with a cover of Bobby Freeman’s Do You Wanna Dance that’s pretty good, if unnecessary, and closes with the great Dance, Dance, Dance. In between is a version of Help Me R(h)onda that is not as good as the single version they subsequently recorded. But if you are not familiar with this album, it’s a revelation. Godlike.

Today! Is where we really begin to see Brian Wilson’s production and songwriting style ramp up to its experimental apex which would come on 1966-1967. Having stepped down from touring after a panic attack en route to Houston, Brian Wilson began spending more time in the studio. The result is a wall of sound style production with more introspective songwriting tinged with melancholy. The results are undeniable.

Classic! Love that Brian Wilson sound!

Woohoo boys!

I hadn't previously considered the lyrics much when listening to the Beach Boys. That was a mistake. Another excellent album. 4.5/5

If you’ve heard the Beach Boys before you know precisely what you’re getting into. Smooth vocals by Love and Wilson, great songwriting and the feeling that summer might never end and the only thing that could stop it are the gray clouds in your mind,

Excelentes los arreglos vocales y la música. Gran álbum

Fantastic.

It was time to put away the surfboards, for the time being anyway. Today! was Brian Wilson fleshing out ideas and soundscapes that would soon engulf his psyche and end up changing the course of music forever. Despite the songs being taut, it is packed with intent for a different kind of listening experience; songs for the interior space as opposed to the beaches that were once roamed and eternally romanticized. Today! is the blueprint for what was to come. Do not skip out.

5/5. There are just a few songs that prevent the 5/5 score but it is so close that I thought I’d give it anyway. 4.8/5 to be exact.

There's magic in The Beach Boys' music -- the way their vocal harmonies float in the air, the way bass drums and timpani add drama with a buh-dum-dum. I can't believe I've never listened to this particular album before. I'm loving it. "Do You Wanna Dance" is one of my favorite songs and The Beach Boys' version is one of the definitive takes on it that all other versions get judged against. Something that struck me after listening to the album a few times is how many songs are about male insecurity. On "Good to My Baby," a guy swears that he treats his girl right and that she loves him but it's pretty clear that's not really the case. "Don't Hurt My Little Sister" takes the opposite perspective. An older brother is worried his sister's boyfriend isn't good enough for her. On "Help Me, Rhonda," (a classic) the guy is just using Rhonda as a rebound hookup after getting dumped by his fiancee. The music makes it sound like an upbeat love song but he's really just hurt. Rhonda looks good but he doesn't seem to care about her at all. "She Knows Me Too Well" is a song from the perspective of a jealous man and on "In the Back of My Mind," a man is paranoid his happy relationship will eventually crumble. There are a lot of insecure and unhappy men in these songs. You can put this on in the background and jam out to the music (which I did a few times and loved) but a closer look gives you a deeper (and sadder) experience.

Beautiful harmonies in timeless pop music. Great stuff from the Beach Boys as always.

I've been a fan of The Beach Boys my entire life. I was more of a fan of the later orchestral sounds than the early surf songs, but I liked them all. How fun to be able to explore the evolution of their sound.

I'm really loving all of the exposure I'm getting to The Beach Boys with this project. And it's fun to read about the goings-on around the recording and the release of this record. Do You Wanna Dance hits you with the Phil Spector-ish wall of sound, making it clear why Wikipedia classifies this as Orchestrated Rock. I love the complexity of the lyrics on side 2 of the album hinting at where Brian Wilson is headed. A gem!

The Beach Boys were a group that I thought I understood in my youth. Then sometime in my 30s all those songs I started getting an inkling there was a lot more to them than I thought. So I have really loved having their albums come up on this project. The songs I am familiar with are so much more meaningful, and I’m discovering brilliant new songs that often surpass those greatest hits. I enjoyed the fun side one and the much more wistful side two. There’s a lot of everything I love about The Beach Boys here. I’m constantly surprised how the melodies will often go off in an unexpected direction - just one of the many ways this album transcends its genre. I listened to this three times in a row and just floated away on those beautiful harmonies over a glorious wall of sound. What a perfect album!

Oh man the harmony in these songs is so great. Love the all the vocals and the arranging. I never really heard most of these songs but now I feel like I’ve been really missing out on The Beach Boys. They are kind of perfect recordings (except the tambourine is super loud) I love the echoey hi hat sound in I’m so young.

Fun, fun, fun until daddy takes the t-bird away

Nah I’m not in the mood. How about The Beach Boys Tomorrow

50% solid gold 60s teenybop bangers Beach Boys, 45% Pet Sounds gold Beach Boys (plus 5% withering Beach Boys recorded for all time for some reason at the end) What's not to like? Apart from that last bit.

Really likes it

Classic Beach Boys

A masterpiece! This is one of their best albums. Love this direction in subject matter away from surfing and cars and more inward-looking lyrics. I always loved the band I have big nostalgia and memories from a childhood California road trip where we had their greatest hits on repeat for three weeks!! I also love the harmonies and find their music in general incredibly impressive mainly because it's SO difficult to sing, play, recreate! Also it might be partly nostalgia but all the songs give me such a happy upbeat mood, love love love.

Great album, I’ve listened to it plenty of times before. Though I think Summer Days (And Nights) would’ve been a better choice for this list, this is still great.

Classic

Amazing as always.

Gorgeous harmonizing! I just love the way the Beach Boys sound, it’s the most nostalgic sound in the world to me. This is a fucking great album. You get fun, catchy songs that have matured out of corny surfing themes, but still emanate youthful joy. Brian Wilson is a stunning delicate genius who is too pure for this world.

Hell yeah, what’s not to love about the beach boys? - 9/10

Good ol classic Beach Boys. Enjoy a treat. Hard to hate surf rock.

5/5. 😤 heat

America’s Beatles

Sencillo, práctico, genial.

Very Good

Their first great album.

surprisingly ok

RATING: 8/10 HIGHLIGHT: When I Grow Up LOWLIGHT: Bull Session with the "Big Daddy"

Hanno una sonorità pazzesca e delle voci che sembrano angeli che ti sussurrano la felicità alle orecchie

Hadn't heard this one, sounds sort of halfway between the early surf tunes and the big Pet Sounds production. Good stuff.

Heartbreak in harmony

The Beach Boys Today! by The Beach Boys ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This album is a short but wonderful reminder that music can be FUN if the artists are interested in that. This is not the strongest collection from The Beach Boys, but it is vastly superior to most everything else that this project has spawned for me. I’m very happy that I got to spend some time at the Beach!

Fun, short & sweet

Really interesting, half the old Surf rock classics and half the orchestral baroque stuff that was on Pet Sounds.

was surprised how much i enjoyed this. the dichotomy of the fun upbeat songs on the first half vs the more melancholy songs on the second make for an interesting listen.

Pretty average for the beach boys which is pretty good

Always a pleasure to listen to The Beach Boys

Really easy listen and some great classics from the boys!

Not as deep as Pet Sounds, but it's fun

The Beach Boys Today! is considered by most to be the turning point for this part Surf Rock part Baroque Pop band into the defining group we all know and love thanks to some lovely melodies. Just when I thought this project would have some misfires, as a lot of the 60s albums in the 1001 albums to hear before you die, there were none to be seen and honestly a lot of hidden gems on this very simple yet beautiful project. The writing may be super basic but unalike some peoples' opinions, I think the harmonies really elevate what would be a super basic song into something so much more serene. Brian Wilson had finally had enough of the formulaic sound The Beach Boys had gotten famous for and decided to make the music he wanted and I think that radical shift couldn't have gone any better because this new era is spectacular. Yeah the last track isn't needed whatsoever but also shows a much more personal side to the band I did enjoy despite thinking it was quite underwhelming. The Beach Boys Today! feels like a revival, or even the start of a new band under the Beach Boys name and I absolutely adore that. Truly a turning point for song compositions and the whole wave of 60s music as a whole. Thank you Brian Wilson for all you did for music.

I have no doubt that when this was released it was seen as either extremely ground breaking or a perfection of craft, but to me this sounds very nostalgic. Unfortunately it’s a throwback to an era where music is slightly more simple. Not that that’s bad but it makes it hard for me to rank. Given my modern sensibilities it sounds nice but quaint. But in a different age or perhaps mood I feel like I would be rating this higher. I’ve opted for a medium between.

harmony into my veins

60s pop is MY BEST FRIEND.

Already done with The Beach Boys on this list, just under a year in. Mostly wonderful chud harmonies

Man I love the Beach Boys. The production and mixing of vocal harmonies is unmatched. This isn't my favorite album of theirs, but it still hits. I think this is the album where you can really start to hear the next level of Brian's production take off which later culminates in Pet Sounds.

Great album. Some dead spots, but mostly good early work from the boys. Four stars.

Favorite Track: Good to my Baby

Yeah. Not my thing, glorious and needs to be there, but never again

Classic beach boys sound

All the Harmonies! Seems to be the album where they stopped singing about surfing all the time, and moved towards the grown up pop of pet sounds. Not quite as good as that (nothing is) but I really like it. If anything it’s too short! Favourite track: Help me Rhonda

These guys had a unique sound

delightful

A decent album, more doo-wop sounding than their later stuff. It’s not quite Pet Sounds, but I still liked it.

A destacar: Track 1 - Do You Wanna Dance? Track 5 - Help Me, Rhonda Track 6 - Dance Dance Dance Track 8 - I’m So Young

I have an online friend who owns like 50,000 albums and this is his favorite album of all time. So I listened to both the mono and the stereo just to give it a solid chance. I have The Beach Boys on my list for a full catalog listen. There's a lot of other recordings by them I like better but I really did enjoy this and I'm sure I'll put it on again. I feel like every BB record is a treasure chest containing secret magic, I used to only like the hits, but there's so much great stuff in the albums, even so-called throwaway tracks.

The third Beach Boys album I've listened to in full. I prefer this to Pet Sounds but Surf's Up still takes the cake for me.

Too pleasant not to like

From this album I liked the song called She knows me too well! They have a vibey and old fashioned sound to them!

One might think I would hate this kind of thing, which makes me feel like the world doesn't really know me at all. Also did you know only the drummer in the Beach Boys actually surfed? I just got back from Hawaii where I bought a souvenir toy truck with a surfboard on top and this is how I justified it.

Beautiful harmonies, but bit dated

A step towards Pet Sounds. Now, the step from this to Pet Sounds is more like a leap into orbit assisted by a rocket, but this step from their previous records at least put their foot into the spaceship.

Interesting at first, but got annoyingly repetitive.

So nice.

Brilliant vocals/harmonies, exceptional writing talent, they didn’t ever miss. The second half of this album is a little sleepy but overall it’s still great.

Some songs sound a lot like punk rock song, but singed with a coir. True there's a lot of choir, but each song are quite different from each other. Not a lot of special songs for me, but probably this is can be truly a comfort album.

sounds like brandy melville music

This one is great!!! What do you want me to say!!! They get fully dreamy here.

Love this album? Then you’re probably John Stamos.

Very good, but not among the greatest Beach Boys albums

Mid-60s Beach Boys is my favorite Beach Boys era. Truly, a standout in their discography. Sadly, the second half of the album is not nearly as memorable as the first one.

RIP Brian you were a real one

I like the beach boys

The second half is like Pet Sounds-lite, which means it is still absolutely incredible. First half isn't too shabby either. 4.5/5

Such a fun/great album. So much fun to listen to. This is right on the border between a 4 or 5 for me. 7.5/10 Top song Help me Rhonda

The BBs ticking all the boxes. Tight little album.

Next to the Association you will not find better harmonies, and the song construction and chord movements keep things interesting. Lovely, not the best album, but close.

Gran álbum, me hace sentir muy bien Gracias chicos de playa

I'm picking up good vibrations...

Dont hurt my Sister. I wish God would have heard this. He’s an asshole

Brian Wilson really was a genius.

Another day, another really good Beach Boys album. This one more classic than experimental but the song writing still impressive nonetheless.

their harmony is indisputable, as is Brian Wilson's genius, but 2 consecutive songs of this sound/genre for me is impossible to listen to, so dated.

I love the Beach Boys, but their beach/surf/cars shtick gets a bit tiresome, so this is great. Definitely sounds like a stepping stone for what was to come with the fantastic Pet Sounds

Classic beach boys, Help Me, Rhonda always fills me with good feelings. I love their vocal harmonies. They may not be the Beatles but they’re pretty damn good. Im doing /10 ratings now btw. 7.5/10

Up there for me because I consider this the start of the beach boys breaking out of their cheesy surf/car era and moving toward their best work.

always fun

7/10 Favorite: I’m So Young

Solid surf album with sweeping harmonies and light-heartedness.

Very classic Beach Boys Surf Sound.

The Beach Boys are so fun. The music is clearly from the '60s and makes me feel nostalgic for those days. Imagine being offended by being called a square. haha! I have never jammed a whole album by them and really enjoyed all the songs.

Not so much for me but giving it 4. This gives you exactly what you expect when you put on the beach boys.

This album is good, very 60's actually. But, even though I get the relevance of The Beach Boys in music and enjoy their stuff (don't get me wrong, it's an album I enjoyed listening to), I can't get to like them more than just saying "it's pretty nice". Their music is very enjoyable, but there is something that I still don't love. Well, maybe there's an album of them I haven't listened yet that will make me appreciate them. For now, as for this album, I enjoyed the listen, and it's good, really, it's good.

After the nearly 80 minute slog of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill yesterday, this was a breezy delight. I prefer the upbeat stuff to the ballads, but even the lesser songs are enjoyable to listen to. The wonderfully lush vocal harmonies outweigh the trite lyrics.

Do You Wanna Dance?: 7/10 MBPW Good To My Baby: 7/10 Don’t Hurt My Little Sister: 6/10 When I Grow Up (To Be A Man): 7/10 MBPW Help Me, Rhonda: 7/10 MBPW? Dance, Dance, Dance: 6/10 Please Let Me Wonder: 6/10 I’m So Young: 6.8/10 Kiss Me, Baby: 6/10 She Knows Me Too Well: 5.8/10 In The Back Of My Mind: 6/10 Bull Session With “Big Daddy”: Nothing To Rate, it’s just them talking

I enjoy the Beach Boys, but at this point, they evoke feelings of nostalgia and romantic sentimentalism rather than brilliant musicianship. The music is well composed and produced, and the lyrics speak of a more innocent time. It is a testament to the music that it doesn't come across as irrelevant, however, I do think they struggled to grow at the incredible pace of many of their musical peers.

Eins von vier(?) Beach Boys Alben in dem Jahr oder so. Junkfood von Sterneköchen. Kann mich an keinen Song erinnern, kein Bock mich damit zu beschäftigen, würde ich genau so wiederhören

Do I have to listen to the Beach Boys? They are incessantly chipper and unrepentantly so, which is just about the opposite of the music I like. Part of that is just because, I think, life is fundamentally sad, in a happy heartbroken alone kinda way. And so music that speaks to that feels more honest to me. But, by the same token, I think it's much easier to write sad music. Genuinely good happy music is hard--and rare. And I'd be happy to never hear "Do you wanna dance" which seems to me to embody the worst of the beach boys instincts. But there's other tracks on here that I actually kinda like.

The Beach Boys always take me back to summers in Wimberley at my Uncle's house. He had a Rock-Ola jukebox in his pool house and the Beach Boys, Beatles, or Marty Robbins were always on. Fantastic stuff.

Good compact album, just a level below their classics

they rock

Still not Pet Sounds but a beautiful record in its own right.

just plain good stuff, innit?

hebben die mannen ooit een slecht album gemaakt?

I like the style. Very different than other music I have heard.

Classic album, Back of My Mind is really good though kinda sad. Help me Rhonda is a certified banger 9/10

Fun Beach Boys Album! Love the harmonies!

On this album, beach boys transition from surfer rock to arguably the greatest pop/rock album in pet sounds is on full display. The harmonies and arrangements are great, but there is some depth and introspection missing from this record that makes it just shy of 5/5

Joy and fun with harmonies dripping in nostalgia

****a good, fun, easy listening album

Quintessential Surf Rock Not Brian Wilson coded for sure but there are plenty of hints of baroque, barbershop quartet, Pop all blended in that special west coast way. Saving the 5 for Pet Sounds but wowie

*1965. *A little Beach Boys normally goes a long way, but this is much mellower than their normal stuff, and I really dig it. *Started off strong with Baby Do You Want To Dance. Help Me Rhonda is also on here. *I actually really liked this. RATING - 7.5/10

3.8 2x short sweet and a few bangers

The vocal arrangements and instrumentation raise this album above its inner corny core though, if you listen closely, you can hear more personal lyrics beginning to emerge. 3.5/ 5

"Help Me, Rhonda"...one of my favorite songs ever, much less Beach Boys songs.

Good classic surf rock, what's not to like?

I can see why they were popular and I prefer this album to the other one I’ve listened to so far.

Do You Wanna Dance? 1001 Albums Generator 161 (11/13/2025) The Beach Boys Today! is widely considered the first "great" Beach Boys album. And it really is great. The first side is filled with bombastic, dancing tunes, and the second side is filled with more introspective ballads, but both sides have some pop perfection on them. I am partial to the energetic side of The Beach Boys generally and I think that side A is pretty much perfect except for the kind of annoying Don't Hurt My Little Sister. Do You Wanna Dance? is one of the best pop songs I have ever heard, and Dance, Dance, Dance is also great. When I Grow Up features some really strange harmonic content in the chorus that hints at what the group would do later on Pet Sounds. Side B is also pretty good, with Please Let Me Wonder being one of my favorite songs on the album. I'm So Young is also prog pop perfection, albeit with some really cheesy lyrics. The album ends with some studio sounds, which is an interesting choice, but not very interesting. The Beach Boys Today! is a great album, but The Beach Boys would certainly go on to do better stuff. 4/5. Favs: Do You Wanna Dance? Dance, Dance, Dance She Knows Me Too Well Least Fav: Don't Hurt My Little Sister

Everyone who knows and loves Pet Sounds have a lot to thank for this one. This is the first album where TBB find its identity beyond vocal surf. Some of their finest pieces here are on par with Pet Sounds, already with the mellow, classy tone we all know and love

usual beach boys, which means great

Hadn't listened to this one before - very good

good album

Sounds like nothing else.

Dated nowadays, but a solid album for its time.

Classic :)

Solid Beach Boys. "In the Back of My Mind", "Help me, Rhonda", and "Good to My Baby" are some highlights.

I am usually tired of hearing The Beach Boys, since I find a lot of their musical tastes off-putting, but this had some really wonderful tracks. Was also surprised by the burgers skit, felt very modern, except for the fact they made it the finale!

canciones muy de la primera época. Tomalo o dejalo.

The production is excellent on this, harmonies create this wall of sound that really hits you, it's definitely dated, songs are simple and the themes are repetitive but it's an easy listen and fairly enjoyable.
