One of my all time favourite albums!
Some absolutely stonking tunes from the band.
Goes to show what you can create when you don’t have half of Peru up your nose!
David Bowie · 2 likes

No words - just stars.
AC/DC · 2 likes
5/5
Absolutely legendary band and this album is one of their best. Having seen AC/DC live several times, I still get goosebumps when the opening chords to H2H begin. Shot Down In Flames is another personal favourite of mine. Bon Scott’s lyrics were just superb!
Marvin Gaye · 2 likes

Absolutely stunning.
Listen to the deluxe version, and in particular the instrumental version of Cakes.
A must have album for any music lover.
The Mars Volta · 1 likes
2/5
A bit Muse-like in places. Nothing special.

If I was in the ‘60s, sat in a field, toting in a doobie, this album would have been awesome. However, today it felt dated.

Awesome album. Forgot how great it was, and how much the band then evolved over the years.

Neil Young

The Afghan Whigs
3/5
Very different and I think I quite like it! A bit wailing in places, but there’s some great Melodie’s in there as well.
The Icarus Line
3/5
A really interesting album - quite aggressive at points, and I liked it!
Talking Heads
3/5
Much better than I remembered it to be.
Bob Dylan
2/5
Still not sure Dylan is my thing, but I can see his relevance in music culture.
Weather Report
1/5
Welcome to Jazz Club…
Cornershop
2/5
Do you know, it wasn’t bad. Would have got an extra star had it not been for the utter murdering of Norwegian Wood at the end… Unforgivable.
Jefferson Airplane
2/5
Far out…
Iron Maiden
4/5
Classic!
(I was, momentarily, transported back to Daley Thompson advertising Lucozade…)
Such a milestone of an album, laying the foundations for a band that’s still doing it over 49 years later.
Gotan Project
3/5
A genre described as ‘Tango’ wouldn’t be my go-to, but I really liked this album. Great musicianship and layers of sound. Pretty decent!
Jeff Beck
4/5
Some genius blues plus a few disgust tracks - still a great body of work.
The Mars Volta
2/5
A bit Muse-like in places. Nothing special.
Norah Jones
1/5
Dull as…
The Beau Brummels
2/5
An album of its time, I think. Quite enjoyable and a band I hadn’t heard of.
Tim Buckley
3/5
I actually quite liked this album. I read about it in my fab book (Cheers, Pete!) and it kind of makes more sense. Pleasantly surprised.
The Doors
4/5
Pretty classic stuff. You can almost smell the room with its ‘relaxing scent’…
AC/DC
5/5
Still one of the most impressive albums ever made.
Absolute classic.
‘Shoot To Thrill’ is an absolute highlight.
Having seen AC/DC a number of times, I can confirm they are world class!
Cee Lo Green
1/5
Dreadful
Laibach
1/5
Not sure I have the words for how bad this is…
Nirvana
2/5
You know what? I didn’t know this album and I was really hoping to be wowed by it.
I wasn’t.
Grunge dirge.
The Smiths
2/5
Really quite average.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Loved this! I ended up listening to it 3 times on the bounce. When you think if what was around at the time, I think this album is genius.
Might just listen to it again.
Funkadelic
4/5
Absolutely love this one!! Killer opening track…
Carole King
4/5
What a beautiful album.
I have never given it a second glance over the years so was massively impressed when I heard it.
Destiny's Child
1/5
Apart from a couple of commercial pieces of bubblegum pop, this album is blah, blah, blah…
Metallica
4/5
Epic! Battery is a killer opener and from then on, nothing lets up. Orion is a really different track, highlighting the skills of Cliff Burton (played live it sounded awesome) and you can see why it’s considered a classic.
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
Not convinced…
Tim Buckley
1/5
Yawn…
Air
1/5
A but trippy…
Pink Floyd
5/5
If o was stuck on a desert island and had only one album to listen to, it would be Dark Side Of The Moon.
For me, it’s the most complete piece of audio artwork ever created.
When I saw David Gilmour play at The Royal Albert Hall, I wanted to hear two songs specifically. One, obviously, was Comfortably Numb. The other was Breathe. I wasn’t disappointed by either.
As a journey through our lives, this album sets out key themes (birth, death, money, aging…) and every time I listen to it, I hear something new. It’s so multi-layered and beautiful, and uplifting, and saddening.
My all time go-to album.
De La Soul
2/5
Interesting - in some ways I quite like the multi-layered approach of the album and it was certainly slightly ahead of the curve at the time. (No need to revisit it, though…)
DJ Shadow
3/5
I’d never heard of DJ Shadow before but I was fascinated by this album. I listened to it 3 times and I want to hear it more.
The Zutons
4/5
I love the Zutons!
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Wow!! What a stunning album!
I believe this was Stevie Wonder’s 16th studio album, in 1973…
It really dignified a change in America at the time - there’s a story about him taking journalists on a bus ride, blindfolded, so they could listen to the soundscape like he would, and then to listen to the album blindfolded as well.
Intense stuff.
Brilliant album.
Nirvana
3/5
For me, this is the album that showcases what Nirvana could have been…there are some beautifully stripped back songs on this album but you get the sense that Cobain was moving away from things. Hearing occasional sighs between tracks was definitely a sign of what was to come.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
1/5
Fair play to the man who has 125 albums and holds a Guinness World Record for it.
Let’s just say, this wasn’t for me.
Tom Waits
1/5
Struggled with this one…
Dr. Dre
2/5
When you listen to Dre, you know what you’re going to get.
Bitch.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Quite a pleasant listen.
Black Sabbath
5/5
The ultimate in a debut album.

Some good tunes and a great throwback to the 80’s!
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Beautiful album.
George Michael
3/5
Aaah…George Michael…(I went to the same scout troop as him, I believe)
Much missed - lovely album.
Youssou N'Dour
2/5
Mmm…nice background music
The National
3/5
I quite liked this - not my usual choice but it was pretty decent.
Johnny Cash
3/5
Cool guy!
Al Green
4/5
Loved this album - what a great (smooth) voice Al Green had!
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
2/5
Quite enjoyed revisiting this album after many years of not hearing it.
I don’t feel the need to rush back to it, though.
The Adverts
1/5
I like a bit of punk from time to time.
Bit too punky this time.
The Darkness
4/5
Fantastic album - and a great live act. I’ve seen them in concert quite a few times now and they don’t disappoint. Probably the best gig was in The Fleece & Firkin in Bristol, which only holds a couple of hundred people. Justin did some guitar solo while the rest of the band stood behind the bar, and I shook hands with Rufus Taylor!
Spandex-tastic!!
The Who
4/5
Classic - one of the finest bands to come out of England. Love this.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
1/5
The title says it all…
Def Leppard
4/5
I had forgotten how good this album was.
Certainly a turbulent time for the band so when Mutt Lange became the producer (I believe) they were in safe hands. Seven big hits off the album - some achievement!
I still have the CD that I bought as soon as it came out, with cuttings from rock magazines at the time!
Must dig it out and have a read sometime…
The Style Council
3/5
Some wonderful songs on what is a bizarrely constructed album. So odd, it seems to work.
I think…
Parliament
2/5
Funky - not sure what else to say…. Not heard of it before. Love the title of track 4 - Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication!
T. Rex
4/5
Such a cool album! Must have been mind blowing to hear it for the first time!!
Jorge Ben Jor
2/5
Well…thank you for this one! Would never have played anything like this before, and I’m glad I did!
Joanna Newsom
1/5
Not my cup of tea.
Mekons
1/5
Never heard of them.
Hoping to forget them.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Enjoyed this.
Miles Davis
2/5
I can genuinely appreciate the talent that the musicians on this album have. But…I let it okay out like background music as it didn’t do much for me, personally. If it’s your thing, fill your wellies.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Genius.
Not always the easiest listen, but what a pioneer.
Mike Oldfield
3/5
Great talent and there are actually a number of very good tracks on the album. I appreciate Mike Oldfield’s musical ability, however…some tracks feel dated and rather cheesy now. (Pop that one back on the shelf for a while…)
Elvis Presley
4/5
Good to hear a proper Elvis album. This was recorded, I believe, post-army and there are some wonderful blues tracks on it, Elvis almost going back to grass roots. Really like it.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
Absolutely love this album - such a unique band and some banging tunes.
Whenever I’ve tried to sing like Anthony Kiedis, I sound more like Vic Reeves, club singer!!
Arcade Fire
3/5
Quite enjoyed this.
Stereolab
1/5
Pass.
MC Solaar
1/5
Le Hip-Hop François… ce n’est pas pour moi.
The Cure
1/5
Rather boring…
Jurassic 5
2/5
2/5
A bit proggy…
Fela Kuti
3/5
Loving a bit of a funky album!
Beatles
4/5
Great album.
I wonder what ever happened to them…
Beth Orton
3/5
I was a bit hesitant, I must admit, when this came up. I had a sense of, ‘I can’t be bothered’ - but I’m glad I did listen as it’s a really intriguing, and calming, album. Thank you, 1001albumsgenerator!
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
1/5
Just too proggy.
Iron Butterfly
2/5
Dust off your bongos, and settle down with a niiice doobie fir this album…
CHIC
3/5
Do you know what? This was a lot more diverse and eclectic than I thought it would be. There’s some great musicianship on the album. Nice one.
Fats Domino
2/5
I’m sure it was groundbreaking at the time - quite pleasant now…
Elbow
3/5
Rather enjoyed revisiting this album. Some great tunes - saw them support U2 on one of their tours. Guy Garvey was so overwhelmed that he forgot the words to the opening song!
Love
1/5
Just didn’t get it.
Method Man
1/5
Yawn…
Green Day
2/5
Never been a huge fan of Green Day but this is a pretty decent album.
Lauryn Hill
1/5
Ok
UB40
3/5
Never really got into UB40 but this is actually not a bad album. Might even listen to it again. One day.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
Not the easiest listen for a Fleetwood Mac album, but there are some great moments. You can sense the tension in some of the songs- must have been quite the ride.
Massive Attack
2/5
Not necessarily my bag but it was alright.
Can
1/5
Odd
Metallica
5/5
One of the greatest rock albums of all time.
After the dodgily produced ‘And Justice…’ album, Metallica needed a big hitter and they don’t come much bigger than this.
I remember being at university, buying the cd single for ‘Enter Sandman’ and having my mind blown! (I’ve got a feeling that the ‘B’ side was ‘So What?’ - a punk romp through expletives. Love it!) And Sandman was played at full volume across the campus!! When the album came out, it was even more mind-blowing. It cemented even more my fanatical devotion to heavy rock.
Brilliant.
Aretha Franklin
3/5
Really enjoyed this, another great Aretha album.
David Bowie
5/5
Absolute classic - a beautiful example of art in musical form. Definitely setting the standard for other artists, as Bowie did throughout his lifetime.
Amazing.
The Pretty Things
1/5
David Gray
2/5
A bit too bland for my liking.
Simon & Garfunkel
2/5
I get it, but it’s all rather folky-twee.
The KLF
3/5
Now, this is not normally my kind of thing, but I did enjoy it! I think mainly due to taking me back to the time I was at university and this sound was big at the time. Not too shabby.
Thin Lizzy
5/5
Just one of the best live albums ever made. A sad reminder of the loss of Phil Lynott - but what a ride he had along the way!
Sam Cooke
4/5
Love this! I have never heard Sam Cooke live before, only ever the typical songs played on the radio. It feels like a cool atmosphere to have experienced.
The Human League
2/5
Well that was a trip down memory lane - and nowhere near as bad as I remember it!
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Loved the first song, then a spiral of depression enveloped me and I put on The Struts to cheer myself up.
Bonnie Raitt
4/5
Good ole time country rnr!
The Smiths
3/5
Not as depressing as I remember. I never took to The Smiths but as I’ve got older, I am less resistant to them, especially as I think Johnny Marr is pretty cool.
Liz Phair
1/5
Whinging, whiney, crap.
The Jam
4/5
Even better than I remember it back in the day. It’s aged (Paul) Well(er).
Apologies.
Beatles
5/5
What can you say about one of the greatest albums ever made…?
To keep it brief, this is an exceptional piece of artwork.
I listened to the 2018 Super Delux edition - the ‘extras’ are outstanding. Other bands must have been weeping at what the standard had been raised to with The White Album.
Stunning.
Abdullah Ibrahim
2/5
Such background music, I’m not sure I even really heard it. So I’ll give it two stars because it obviously wasn’t hugely offensive.
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
Pleasant enough but no need to listen again for another 35 years.
Nas
1/5
(Sigh…)
Neil Young
4/5
Love this album. Very tender in places and probably my favourite Neil Young album.
Lou Reed
3/5
Really enjoyed listening to this - better than I remembered it.
Hookworms
2/5
Pleasant enough - I can imagine watching them at a festival, with an ice cold beer in hand.
Metallica
4/5
Underrated and overproduced…
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
Thoroughly enjoyed this one!
LL Cool J
1/5
Some of the most childish lyrics I’ve heard. Utter nonsense and an album I don’t need to listen to again.
Ever.
The Police
3/5
I had forgotten how good this was. A right old stroll down memory lane…
Eagles
4/5
Eagles were a great band with some decent tunes.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Listening to this through a decent pair of headphones made for a brilliant journey through this classic album. There are some storming songs on here - how ahead of his time (musically, artistic, visually) was Jimi Hendrix?
When you have Lemmy as a roadie, you’re the man…
The Sugarcubes
2/5
After listening to this, I can’t honestly say life had improved significantly…
James Taylor
3/5
I think it was pleasant enough - it sort of came and went…
Röyksopp
2/5
Mmm…
Deep Purple
5/5
What can I say?!? One of the greatest, groundbreaking rock albums of all time. Epic.
Hugh Masekela
2/5
Welcome to Jazz Club…
Grateful Dead
1/5
I’ve never got The Grateful Dead, and I didn’t get this album.
Pulp
5/5
Title says it all.
What a joy to listen to this album, in full, in the order it was designed to be listened to.
Pure class.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
1/5
(Yawn)
Steely Dan
2/5
First two songs were ok. After that, I couldn’t tell what was playing…
Bee Gees
2/5
Not what I was expecting (apart from the obvious BG pitch and tone) and I was pleasantly surprised.
John Lee Hooker
4/5
Quality! Love the inclusion of Carlos Santana!!
Traffic
3/5
A bit folky in places, some good instrumentals.
Liked it.
The Who
4/5
Great album, although I remember it being much more rocky…
The xx
2/5
Mmm…
Shuggie Otis
3/5
What a good album - really chilled.
Ministry
3/5
Such great memories of ‘Jesus Built My Hotrod’! The album in its entirety is a juggernaut of hardcore tunes. An acquired taste.
David Bowie
5/5
Absolute, total and utter masterpiece.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
Cool album.
Incredible Bongo Band
4/5
Cool album.
Gillian Welch
1/5

Pretty good - Pete, I know you love this band.
(I’ll give it an extra star for that reason!)
Tears For Fears
3/5
Better than I remembered.
Janelle Monáe
4/5
I absolutely love this album! Listened to the deluxe version, twice. It’s not at all what I’m into but there’s real artistry in her work. I have heard, on good authority, that she is quite the live performer. Impressive album.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
1/5
“Y’all (don’t bother to) come back now, y’hear?”
Pixies
2/5

Stevie Wonder
4/5
Cool album - well funky!
The Pogues
2/5
Like a scene from ‘Snatch’..,
Ryan Adams
4/5
I’ve only ever heard bits and pieces from Ryan Adams, so it was good to hear an album in its entirety. Pretty decent.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
When giants walked the earth…. This is the stuff of legend!
Haircut 100
2/5
I’m pretty sure it was the same song being played for the whole album…
The Velvet Underground
3/5
Groundbreaking in many ways, but…has it stood the test of time…?
The Only Ones
2/5
Considering the line up of the band, this should be so much better.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
Still an absolute classic - when you’ve got a hatful of songs that are comparable in quality to the title track, you’ve got it all. The album Springsteen said he wanted to make so that everyone would remember him.
Job done, Boss.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
A change of gear from yesterday’s classic Springsteen album, today’s is the epitome of cool. Sinatra doing what he does best.
Timeless.

Cat Stevens
4/5
Beautiful album - such a delicate tenderness to it.
The Specials
3/5
Although Ska is not really my thing, this album was pretty decent.

Ella Fitzgerald
4/5
Great if you only have time for one album in the whole day! How long?!?
Boston
4/5
Obviously, ‘More Than A Feeling’ is imprinted in all our minds, but this album seems to have escaped me. It is, however, quite a belter and worthy of four stars.
