Reviews (page 8 of 13)
Its good, surprisingly good. Life changing? No.
Solid album, very poetic. Loved the lyrics and angst. Beautiful voice
Not really my cup of tea, but I admire a lot about Lorde. It feels like it's tougher than ever for a young woman to carve out a music career. The melodies and lyrics aren't really for me (apart from Green Light, which was already on a playlist of mine) but I like the overall sound; it's stylish and well-produced. I'd be interested to hear her first album properly, too.
6/10 You know, it's alright. Pop, but moves along nicely. Lyrically I found it as tedious as any other pop album, and as a musical piece of work it sounds like it was done on a computer, but there are tunes here.
I also listened to this one more than once, only because the first time I listened, I got kind of bored halfway through. I decided to give it a second play with a bit more active listening and sadly I just wasn't into it.
I had the time to listen to this album multiple times. Lyrically, it tries too hard a lot but sometimes a lyric will hit right. For example, I really like this lyric “They'll hang us in the Louvre, Down the back, but who cares—still the Louvre”. I don’t think this album deserves to be on this list. Her first album was a milestone for the genre but this one felt forced. Yeah, it’s catchy sometimes but that doesn’t make it an album I just hear before I die. To that end, I also feel like just because an artist is wide-known, it doesn’t mean all their albums should be on the list. I would say one album per artist unless they have multiple truly monumental albums. I have a feeling Lorde’s Pure Heroine is on the list and they just added this as well.
pretty good
Pretty good. Sounds a lot like more modern female artists, but this record predates all that. Wish there was more of a focus on music, as it felt like she was always singing.
It’s fine, but I wouldn’t say it stands out from some other pop/electronic albums I’ve listened to.
the voice and delivery will never sit right with me but i don't want to hold it against the whole expression
Where royals?
I like Lorde and respect her musically. This was a good album and further proof she has a huge catalogue when most people only know "Royals." No generational bangers but solid album.
Pretty good, lots of cursive singing. A lot of similar beats from her first album.
good
When Lorde released *Melodrama*, she didn’t just drop a pop album — she handed the world a glitter-covered therapy session wrapped in synths, sobs, and lyrical brilliance. It’s the sonic equivalent of staying up too late, staring at the ceiling, and convincing yourself that heartbreak is actually character development. From the euphoric sprint of “Green Light” to the devastating quiet of “Liability,” Lorde captures every emotional frequency of a quarter-life crisis. The production (courtesy of Jack Antonoff, professional feelings translator) shimmers like champagne at a party you’re pretending to enjoy. It’s artful, aching, and danceable in a way that makes you question your own coping mechanisms. Now, some people hear *Melodrama* and immediately start rethinking their life choices. Others — like Dave A Group Of Trees — simply open ChatGPT and type, *“Write a review of Lorde’s Melodrama that makes me sound insightful but not like I cried during ‘Supercut’.”* Dave is a man so allergic to effort he’s essentially outsourced his emotional growth to artificial intelligence. He’s not writing his own thoughts anymore; he’s just curating vibes while reclining horizontally, one AI prompt at a time. Still, even Dave (between naps) would agree that *Melodrama* is a masterpiece. It’s raw but polished, sad but exhilarating — the sound of youth combusting gracefully. Lorde doesn’t just describe emotions; she dissects them, sets them to music, and somehow makes you grateful for your own heartbreak.
Slick production. Never inspired to listen to a Lorde album based on her singles, unlikely to listen again. Fine, just not my taste.
It's a good album, but I like the tone of the first album better. 👍Green Light
Me ha gustado la produccion del album. Aunque no deja de ser un disco pop que, si no le pones atencion, podria pasar por musica de fondo. Le doy el punto de que la cadencia y voz de Lorde no es la tipica, o al menos no en aquel momento.
I thought this was pretty good! Nothing spectacular but I still enjoyed it.
Decent, but felt like it could've better, more memorable
This album has such a gripping introduction that loses itself to, yes, the melancholy dramatics that amalgamates itself into self loathing. There is some phenomenal, heart-pounding production on this album that reminds me of small town adolescence and experiencing intimacy for the first time in a claustrophobic environment both inside and outside of yourself. “Melodrama” steps past “Pure Heroine” into a specific experience surrounding a breakup which I find more or less predictable and less special than “Pure Heroine” at the time of its release. I have respect for the expression of this heartbreak but I unfortunately find Lorde all too pretentious these days which makes a handful of the content here feel disingenuous. Nonetheless I appreciate her ability to translate palpable youthful searches for greater things into something aural. Favourite song(s): Green Light, Sober, Homemade Dynamite Least favourite(s): The Louvre, Liability
not my genre....but...the production it's pretty Amazing : jack anthonoff did a great job on some songs, serban Ghenea Amazing. I don't like the concept but the production is still Amazing, the sound field represented of melanchony it's fantastic. Overall 3
Not for me but Green Light is a great song
The Louvre was a decent song and it did get better as it went on. It's vastly better than all the early 70s rock on this list... However, her style of emotive singing does get my goat from time to time. All a bit "6th form talent contest" for my liking. The number of support acts I've heard at small gigs aping Lorde's style ruins it a bit ...
It's delightful to listen to, I'll give it that. The specific vocal style of Lorde complements the whimsical arrangements.
Green light is the clear standout with more ok banger pop after that. Nothing that stood out to me but a good time nonetheless.
There is no doubt that Lorde is a great artist in this modern pop space. A lot of great hits in this album that highlight her ability really well. Though, this album is a lot more my girlfriends taste over mine and while I appreciate her talents it isn't as much for me. I have always been quite fond of Green Light though.
I actually enjoyed many of these. Popular jams.
I have an extreme soft spot for Lorde. I loved her voice, I love her style, and it’s not your typical pop music. But I really only know her from her singles. Listening to an entire album, her style can get a bit repetitive. At least the first half of this album was like that. The second half was more diverse and it’s nice to hear her style and voice in different contexts.
If I were to judge this based entirely on whether it actually belongs on this list, I'd be harsher. As a body of work it's fine to have on in the background. The opening of Green Light blatantly bites the Dancing On My Own melody, so that got things off to a rocky start.
Okay. One of the first times that I've felt a generational divide. I have liked previous songs of hers but these all felt a bit more generic, modern pop. Breathy, mumbly lyrics about being a 20-something woman living life.
Royals biggest song so 3
Very melodramatic. Not a bad listen, first side of the album the songs are very similar. But it improved as it progressed. Strong finish with Supercut and Perfect Places. L = (2.75*s) Same beat in many songs, didn’t get angry at it. J = (3.1*s) My take away is she used a lot of loud synsonic drums.
A bit surprised when I saw this Lorde album pop up on the list, expect(ed) her debut. I will say side A is bit of a slow drag, which I kinda expected based on the album Title. But side B turns it up a notch. The pace picks up and the songs are more engaging. After the full listen, I'm one foot in, 1 out on this record. Looking back on it, starts low and gradually builds to end on a high with the top track...like Lorde slowly emerged from the depression of the breakup and was ready to get back out there, even if those perfect places are hard to find. Not really going back on any single track but as a whole, this is a good album for anyone going through a split. Not disappointed here and will give the lady more credit than I have...2.65 stars.
Decent follow up album by Lorde after making a splash with her debut. Melodrama has more of the same indie pop that helped put her on the map. There was a couple of radio hits that may have overexposed her in the wake of her quick success but the albums have held up pretty well over the past 10 years. I've always considered Lorde a little overrated, specifically in terms of a vocalist, but that doesn't detract that I can still enjoy her music. The pieces of the puzzle come together well enough that she will continue to get some deserved air play. We've seen her live a couple times and she puts on a good show. 3.27 stars
Just the right amount of angst.
3 out of 5 Not as bad as I expected lol
This album was good/fine. Aside from Lorde's singing nothing really pops out at me. There are some good songs on here but the narrow vision and over the top dramatics took a toll. Just a bit boring. 3.00-3.25/5
Not gonna lie. I know this album and I really dig it. SuperCut and Greenlight will get under your skin in the best way. 3.5 stars
Before listening to this, I am going to try to keep an open mind but cannot imagine that there are actually TWO Lorde albums I need to hear before I die and if there's even ONE I would assume that Pure Heroine would be it. But let's see... I liked the first song. It reminded me of Taylor Swift, but better. About halfway into the second song, however, I am already getting kind of tired of this. Just not my genre. But I don't hate this. "The Louvre" was kind of cool.
A overall good synth pop album with a number of really catchy hooks in a few songs.
Nice album, didn't love it though.
Jeg kan godt li' hende. Og albummet havde en perfekt længde.
Fine. Overproduced and underwritten
In the name of the Lloyd!
Wasn't too bad
“I am Lorde, ya ya ya…”. South Park has made it real tough to take this artist very seriously, and through no actual fault of her own. All I can think of is Randy Marsh’s creative process in making his toilet recordings into Lorde albums. I love South Park. I don’t know why they were picking on Lorde, but it was funny. Anyway, I don’t hate this and it’s pretty catchy. But, at the same time, it sounds like it’s got Jack Antonoff’s fingerprints all over it, and I’m tired of his whole sound; Melodrama sounds remarkably similar to everything Taylor Swift produced while working with him…actually, this is better, to be fair, but I feel like you could swap out any song from this record with any song from Midnights and the casual listener would never know the difference. This makes me feel like Taylor Swift and Lorde are just the pretty-faced shills for Jack Antonoff’s girl pop projects. It’s too much. So, I guess my problem is not that Lorde’s Melodrama is unenjoyable, cause it’s catchy. My problem is that I swear I’ve heard half these songs on various Taylor Swift albums before and, it might be catchy, but it’s played out also. 3.5/5
Just like the rest of the trendy pop albums on this list, Lourde’s Melodrama is no different, just more recent. What makes this a must listen vs her debut I dont get. At least that was more original and not mired by the Jack Antonoff filter. 3/5
Before this point in my life Lorde was just a artist that I would hear on the radio, and I'm glad that's changed. Listening to this album really shifted my perspective on her. I feel like she's an artist that has really made a sound unique to her. I like that she chooses the words and phrasing that isn't going to be the same as every other pop hit. I like that her music is mostly a gentle droning or rhythm with her voice over it. I like that her voice melodies are written like the right hand of a piano, the flow from a rap song, percussive, or poppy. I like that she didn't become a sell out the moment she was popular, and kept chasing her sound.
There were some powerful moments, some nice tunes, some nice singing, didn't go past that though.
I've always liked the song "Green Light."
Interesting
Surprised this album genre is defined just as "pop". It has more but I can't put my thumb on it. Lorde is a good artist, and I got an Enya vibe from parts of this album. Track inspirations seemed to come from Prince, David Bowie, and Kate Bush. I can't imagine listening to a track from this album on the radio, but the entire album is an easy-listening experience that could fit a road trip. 3.5/5
Interessante
The most modern album so far, and I thought this post dates the book, so confusing. Starts strong, soon becomes pretty but banal. Lyrics are bad. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No 17/1001, 17/70 (24%) Will I get? No
Pretty easy 3. Never in danger of a 2 or a 4.
It's just about a 3. Might be getting the benefit of the doubt for just being as shit as expected. It's all a bit bland though.
Fairly interesting. Might revisit one or 2 of these songs
I was surprised by how much of this sounds like Taylor Swift's more recent work, but maybe that's Jack Antonoff's influence. I'm not a fan of the synth drums, which means that for once my favourites were the more minimalist songs in Liability and Writer in the Dark.
now I know who is Lorde.
I didn’t like it but it seems like a well produced album
Interesting pop album from Lorde. Obviously more experimental than Pure Heroine, but it still feels relevant 8 years later. Not sure it's one of the best 1000 albums of all time, but that still feels like such a huge number.
Good pop album
I think listening to Melodrama in the chronological order of the 1001 albums would have helped the experience for me. I kept wondering whether Lorde was establishing pop-music cliches or perpetuating them. Or was that producer Jack Antonoff? My favorite song on the album is Homemade Dynamite, which is the only song Jack Antonoff had nothing to do with. Anyway, I had to ask the internet and the internet said Lorde is an innovator, not an imitator. So, take that for what it is worth.
i had to listen to this like five times before i could make up my mind about it - do i like this? do i hate it? "electro pop" and "synth pop" are both genres i love to listen to, so i should love this, right? i really didn't know, and i didn't know why it was so hard for me to find some salient feeling about this album. it lands in some indeterminate, bland middle-ground for me - sure, i like some of the songs, but the project as a whole?? meh... now, i find all the jack antonoff scapegoating lore hilarious, and while i don't earnestly believe he's solely responsible for how i feel about this album, it's gotten me thinking about his production style in general. because: as a st. vincent fan, i /liked/ masseduction (2017 - same year as melodrama), and i /really liked/ daddy's home (2021), but both of these antonoff produced works are a huge departure from her older stuff, and i maintain strange mercy (2011) is her best album (so far!!). so, maybe there's some truth to this jack antonoff slander - but i haven't really listened to the artists he regularly works with, so i can't say for certain if he's really the one to blame here. highlights - homemade dynamite, supercut, perfect places
Not bad for modern pop music, some enjoyable moment with good melodies and funny sounds, probably the score would be even higher if it all was that way.
Never quite managed to get on the Lorde hype train I'm afraid. Good, but not great.
Very very repetitive.
Creative contemporary pop music. Kind of a less eccentric Kate Bush. It’s not bad but there’s something about Lorde that just doesn’t click with me.
Tøff stemme. Litt laber stemning på albumet, men hva annet kan man forvente med den tittelen? Likte minst: Hard Feelings Likte best: Supercut Hun har vel et bedre album som hadde gjort seg bedre på 1001?
Not as good as her first album but still pretty good.
Supercut and the first time are serious
Actually don't mind her. Not bad for pop 3
taylor amos, tori swift
I liked this! Her voice is simplistic but beautiful
I am Lorde, ya ya ya!
Overall- decent. It had some hood songs but was also very repetitive in sound and subject.
One standout, rest was fine.
As it's my first album, I can't quite say yet whether it deserves to be on this list. It definitely has some enjoyable tracks on it, but very few that I would think would be remembered for all time.
Probably the kind of thing I would’ve really liked as an early teenager, but as a late Gen Xer this was one of the first albums I can remember being praised to the rafters and being pretty certain this is music for folks half my age, what am I doing here...
I feel conflicted because this is a 3 star album to me, but Lorde’s first album “Pure Heroine” is one of my favorite albums, an absolute fantastic pop album. However, that album isn’t on the list, and this one is. Sure, on Melodrama she worked with an all-star producer (Jack Antonoff) and it definitely sounds like it, but that’s the problem - it sounds like a well-produced pop star album. To me, what drew me to Lorde’s first album was her minimal production, interesting beats, and unique lyric melodies. What Jack did was come in and turn everything up a bit, and make the songs all kind of sound the same? I like this more than some of my other 3-star albums, but it just doesn’t hit like “Pure Heroine” and I keep trying to like it more than I do. I believe this album made the cut on this list because she was still riding the success of her first album, the general public was ready to give her her flowers and call her a star.
This album is aptly named, because it’s moody AF. I liked it better than I thought I would, but it’s probably not something I’d listen to often, if ever. I do love the Supercut song though.
Wanted to like this more, because I thought 'Green Light' was great - but there's just a little too much slow moody stuff and Kate Bushisms for my tastes.
There’s better stuff
Like it 3/5
Really good
Lords is talented and makes enjoyable music. I just don’t hear how she’s all that different than some of her contemporaries.
not my thing but I get it
I've long known she's neither Madonna's daughter nor Randy Marsh but never listened before. Perfectly nice. I can see why she's popular. It's dark brooding melodramatic pop. Some clever lines (like on The Louvre, although an annoying chorus) and good tunes like Sober II. Probably won't clamour to listen again but still.
Good
Remember when Randy Marsh was Lorde?
Whispery pop. I see why Jen likes it so much. I like a few songs a lot and the rest only meh
Good album not really for me though
I’m not a huge fan. Nothing really impressed me. There were a couple good songs though.
Lorde is pretty good, I should listen to them more
8 years later and Green Light still pops into my head once a week, but If I'm constantly checking to see how many songs are left that's probably not a great sign. 3.5 *makes tnt exploding sound*
Lorde is the kind of artist I wish I liked more than I actually do. I can recognize the quality of her music and the emotions she conveys, but with many of her songs I just can’t seem to connect. For my sister, that last sentence is probably no less than blasphemy. That said, I still had a lot of melancholic fun with Melodrama. Especially the songs Liability and Perfect Places will stay with me for a while.
I like the modern production on this pop record.
i used to put off listening to this because i couldnt stand her vocals, and honestly i still am a bit put off but wow her lyricism is spectacular!
E36, Pforzheim - Stuttgart, Deutschland. Ganz okay.
An interesting album, in which Lorde works through the failure of a relationship and the party-laden time as a single afterwards. I'm not super familiar with the rest of the work, but to me this album was solid pop. None of the tracks were really the kind of danceable bangers that might get tons of air time, but they formed a coherent whole together that went on to tell the story Lorde wanted to tell to great effect.
If you wanted to play this in the car while we were on a long road trip, that would be OK.
This album sounds good but it seems soulless to me. She has a cool story though.
I enjoyed about half of the songs enough to add them to my playlist. Not the hugest fan of her voice but many of these are great songs to jam out to with your friends driving down the coast late at night.
i can honestly say that all I know of Lorde is from that one South Park episode where Randy claims that he is Lorde. overall, this album was nice to listen to. i dont think it was anything mind blowing, but certainly pleasant.
Fun album that's very catchy throughout. Not quite the vibe I was feeling yesterday so have to relisten when I want some pop
I can’t really fault this album, just not my thing. It was easy enough to listen to, which is why it’s a three rather than a two, but I won’t be coming back to it.
Highlight Song/s: Green Light I convinced myself that I hadn't heard any of the songs on this album. But no, I've heard "Green Light" before; from the radio that is. Near the start of the album I wasn't too hopeful, but during half way through the album it got a lot better. Surprisingly solid lyrics as well, especially for a pop album.
Quality vibes and at times a lovely atmosphere, but let down by all that whisperpopping about - why the need?
Sterile and bland, but that describes most pop from the last 15 years. Almost boring but not quite. Musically, it's fine. I like the bass synth pop style. Lyrics are slightly annoying, but I'm obviously not in the target demographic. Lorde has a distinct voice, and that helps somewhat. This is something I wouldn't turn off if I'm listening in the background while working. I'm not going to seek it out, though.
A decent album
If you liked her first album and thought it was super pop and catchy, then you'll kinda like this completely unevolved, chock-full of songs that didn't make her debut sophomore album.
I started the "album a day" to expand my musical pallette, and here we are, faced with an album I would've avoided like the plague as a man in my early 20s. Still, my Viagra Boys, Dead Kennedys, Sly Stone loving self was pleasantly surprised at times throughout "Melodrama". The chorus of "Perfect Places" is massive and catchy as hell, and Lordes songwriting throughout the album is introspective and sharp, if not downright cliche at times. While I am a fan of Lorde herself, I cant say the same for Jack Antonoff and his production style. His signature style of pop has dominated the radio waves for over a decade now, and at this point I find it tired and played out. Still Ive probably heard dozens of his songs without realizing it, so hes doing something right I guess. I had low expectations coming in, but came out the other side a slightly bigger fan of Lorde, I just wish she would drop the "oich" inflection in her singing 😆.
Pretty impressive - was this her 1st album? I liked it- knew a couple of these tracks - but what is it that gets her album on the list? I'm waiting to hear Stu's take : )
I have nothing negative to say about this. No notes. Not negative reactions. No issues whatsoever. Thoughtful lyrics. Great voice. Seamless production. Genuine emotion in the lyrics capturing the agony and ecstasy of love/life with an exhilarating mix of youth and wisdom. In the end though I feel a little inert by the proceedings. Empirically it's a 4. My enjoyment is a 2.
I see where Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo found inspiration
First time listening to Lorde.
Perfectly serviceable
I like some songs on this album a lot, green light and super cut. The rest was good but felt I would have on as background
Still on the fence about Lorde. Actually enjoyed this more than i thought, although it still has the generic breathy quality so prevalent 10 years ago.
3.8 if I could
Very unique and creative. Loved it, although wanted more from it.
the album was pretty great, though i didn't like it as much as i thought i would. i'm obsessed with homemade dynamite however. i also think supercut is pretty good! overall pretty great, plus i love the album cover
AAA yes. Green light: one of the ones i alr listened to. ''I whisper things, the city sings em' back to you'' is honestly epic. sober: cool track, love some of the lyrics homemade dynamite: I love the beginning and verses but don't rlly like the chorus the louvre: love that title, love the ''i overthink ur punctuation use''. the boom boom broadcasting part isn't it though. Liability deserves a fucking prize for saying exactly what I want to say sometimes. Nothing else to add. Hard feelings: she went nuts, how can saying all that even be legal? added t to my playlist. Loveless though isn't it for me. sober pt2: same here, rlly enjoy the beginning but the second half changes the tone a lot, I feel like I should listen to it more times in order to enjoy it properly. writer in the dark: love the beginning, AGAIN, but the meme doesn't help on the I am my mothers child part. perfect places is going on my playlist too.
I loved Pure Heroine but this album is a pretty major Sophomore slump
Some good some not to my taste
Less pop, more maturity than I expected. Lourde clearly struggling with her stardom on this one. Still has some good beats and hookiness, but a very different album than Pure Heroine. Brooding and introspective and darker. As far as my take… surprisingly good with decent depth. Solid record.
I can't really listen to a whole Lorde Album, but she's a fantastic artist. I mean if Weird Al makes a parody of one of your songs, you have to have made it.
This is an interesting pop album and I like Lorde's voice. Overall it was an interesting listen but it would not be on my frequent playlist.
3/5 I'll totally play this next time I'm a teenager and my boyfriend breaks up with me favorite song: Loveless
Pas écoute 🙏
I didn’t think I’d enjoy Melodrama, but parts of it really surprised me. Lorde’s lyrics are sharp and emotional, and a few tracks really hit. I respect the ambition and can see why others love it.
No es mi estilo xd
Pretty solid 3.5. Not sure why it’s on here, pure heroin is better and they’re pretty similar vibes
Starts out OK ... got better though. Supercut is pretty good and tracks after. Perry good pop album. Was going to give it 4 but when listening again (same day) I decided it's not as enjoyable as I thought it might have been. 3 stars
Quite different. I think I liked it. Need to listen again.
Pretty good
I like the style; it’s a bit different to a lot of pop of its time. No outstanding tracks though
Muy buen album, conocia alguna pero realmente me ha gustado mucho
not my type of music
its alright i guess
Nostalgia goes hard. Was nice to listen to this. Fave song: Writer In The Dark
Not really catchy and started off kind of weird. Lorde has a great voice but she needs a better DJ. Overall, not bad though. Favourite Song: Supercut
I wonder how random this generator is… I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again! I wrapped up watching the show just last night (‘Too Much’) which details the breakup of Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff. Great speculation is that the girl who steals Lena’s hubby is supposed to represent Lorde, as Lorde actually lived with the couple in their Brooklyn apartment as they made this album! Melodramatic indeed. Jack and Lorde swear their relationship was always platonic, where Lorde was actually into Jack and not the other way around, but having been a young dude cohabiting with select women in my time, I’ll politely turn my head and cough the word ‘bullshit.’ The show is not something I’d recommend. My wife made me watch it. Melodrama, though, is something I might suggest if someone was unfamiliar and for some reason trying to immerse themselves in the sounds of the last decade (which honestly haven’t evolved so much- thank you algorithms). I’d heard most of Melodrama before, also thanks to my wife. She might rate this a five. I think it’s more three-ish.
It was OK. Not her best, but OK.
Wanted to like it more for how many plays it has but the breathy-ness of the singing was just too overdone. Beats were cool. Didn't connect with the lyrics too much but they flowed fine with the music.
Really? A must hear? I think not Lots of listens, it was/is popular. Over 300-500M listens on 4 tracks, none of which I've ever heard. Not cutting edge but well produced & mixed, is it the songwriting or lyrics that get it on this list? It sounds like so many other pop albums to me. She sings like she has a fat lip at times, I hate that, it's very millennial and distracting. I would have thought her debut would make this list instead of this one. Did nothing for me but it was quality, rode it out and it was great background music but I never had a "wow" moment. Not cutting edge and not all that interesting. Not worthy in my book but it was popular for sure. 3 stars.
Didn’t like the first half but enjoyed the second half more than I thought.
I didn't find this particularly exciting.
A quick easy listen. Some song had more talking that actual singing
Eerlijk. Ik had het tijdens werken aan en het viel mij niet op nog stoorde het. Typische 3 reten
Pop, Rock, 2017 -> 3
Not my fav Lorde album but still good
Heard of Lorde. I like her vocal and style but idk, it doesn't hit the spot, the music and lyrics aren't quite my vibe a bit too pop maybe? I don't like it as much as I want to.
Interesting, grew on me the more I listened to it
Some pretty cool beats but doesn't do that much for me, some pretty great songs like the intro
The album was okay, but it’s just not really my genre. Hard Feelings/Loveless was a great song though.
Good for a pop album.
not so into the deep raspy voice.
Lorde é a melhor cantora pop da minha geração. (Descobri que não somos da mesma geração, mas foda-se, achei a frase impactante).
Not my fave music genre but it was enjoyable and recorded really well
6.5/10 Pretty solid new gen pop from Lorde. My expectations were a bit higher on this album from some hype I saw online. She has some great moments of song writing and punch from the production but I can't fully get into the album as a whole Favorite Tracks: Writer In The Dark, Supercut
yeah its also an ok pop album
Every song sounded the same and by that I mean it sounded like millennial indie mehness
There are some nice moments, and if it’s already on I’d probably leave it on, but there isn’t enough that would make me reach to put it on. The album cover might be more iconic than any of the songs outside of Supercut.
Very very good, tight project
Definitely melodramatic
Rough start, quite liked Liability, and just overall think she's not for me.
'tis alright 6
-oou i didn’t know this one was on here. I listened to it for the first time fairly recently and i do think it’s quite good, maybe just not the kind of thing i would listen to in my own time for the most part -the songwriting and vocals are absolutely mesmerizing. she deserves her flowers there… may require an eventual third listen tbh -Favorites are Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, and Supercut
Disco de pop curioso. No es mi flow pero no está mal
Like this a fair amount. 3.5 rounded down. Would try more of her music.
Green Light is a 10000% certified banger.
Green Light rips Also digging Sober Supercut feels like teen dream filler
Whilst this obviously has some bangers, it is rather generic at times and there's only so much of the subject matter I can relate to as a 37 year old father of 2
Some great slices of pop, but others feel to forced or rigid.
It’s not really to my taste so my rating is in relation to my preferences rather than reflective of the musician
I get how this would have felt revolutionary. I don't need this catharsis telling me how to feel or validating my feelings or helping me purge my feelings so I can move past being alone of heartbreak or whatever, gimme a good bop. This album fails to deliver a single hook or remarkable song.
I know Lorde. I saw her live once at a festival. Not a huge fan. I'll check out a couple tracks on this album. actually thought this was that 'heroine' album. Never heard this one. Not my style of music. I respect her.
It was fine. Didn’t really aural to me.
2.5
Some good ones
I think she’s a strong songwriter and I enjoy the vocals on this one, but I also have a problem with the overworked production. Standout track is: Homemade Dynamite
I like Lorde’s voice but hate the overproduction of many of the songs - like Perfect Places and Green Light. All that electronic cr*p should be stripped out. The only highlight was Liability (but definitely NOT the reprise version).
Really interesting pop music, both musically and lyrically, 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐
Pretty decent. Nice production, a couple good songs but not really my vibe.
Meh
I've never listened to this all the way through, but wow, there's definitely some Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" in here.
3.5
I enjoyed this album. It had a good mellow vibe to it and some of the songs were pretty catchy. Would give 3.5 if possible.
For ofte bliver sangene for meget elektro pop til mig. Men når de elementer erstattes af et mere håndspillet udtryk, som på f.eks. Liability og Writer in the Dark kan det noget.
This was way better than I was expecting. Worth a listen for sure.
Decent, but doesn't stock up against pure heroin
Fav: Perfect Places Least Fav: The Louvre Really hoped this would do something for me, but it just left me feeling empty
If you threw all songs by Lorde, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift in a hat and pulled one out there is very little chance I could tell you whose it was.
Supercut was a favorite. Not much else about this album for me. I like Lorde's voice and it's very well produced. Higher 3
Sounds like the New Zealand version of Taylor Swift. Have heard a few of her songs but definitely not a whole album. These were some weird song structures that did work in some parts and not in others. There were so low-key bangers on here for sure. A lot of slow songs which weren't my favorite. Enjoyable for sure, glad it was only 40 minutes.
I am Lorde yayayayaya About halfway through and while its not really my jam, the production is undeniably good on this. Not bad by any means just never something I'm going to go out of my way to put on. Going high 3 here good job Randy Marsh.
not bad would listen to again
meh
Overall this is fine if not good pop. A little more introspective and as bit smarter than some with production that alternates between interesting moments and safe trends. But, and I wasn't paying attention at the time, is this the original source of the sultry tween singing voice of that decade? I heard it everywhere for so long back then... Usually a ukulele-picking post-emo psuedo-americana thirteen year old girl, but this is that voice. Such a weird cultural zeitgeist. Whatever, it works fine here. No ukuleles here! Extra star just for that.
The sound quality on this album is very crisp and clear. The music is good. I find Lorde’s singing slightly annoying on some of these songs. Perhaps this is done purposely to differentiate her from other female singers of the same era.
Not a bad album, and I enjoyed a couple of the songs, but it's lacking something I can't quite name. I don't know if I'll even remember the songs I liked in a day or two, and I don't think I can blame that on age. Addendum: I was reading through the reviews and someone said this album lacked soul...yeah, that is what's missing; passion, enthusiasm, soul. It got me thinking about the song "You Oughta Know." You can feel the anger and you know she is pissed off. But then with "Green Light," it's polished to the point of indifference. Two songs dealing with the end of a relationship. They are both good songs, but only one gives me chills when I listen to it.
Solid album, faded a bit towards the end for me, 3/5 intriguing
Quality modern pop
Better than I thought, the blueprint for TS Tortured Poets Society?
Ok
Very definite mood, style, and vision. It is interesting how she twists the 2010s electropop sound to suit the album’s needs, but I don’t like electropop so a bit of a hard sell for me. Best song: Green Light
Decent but kind of underwhelming
Not bad
Rate a 3
Woah wasn't expecting this - a woman? Born in the nineties? I don't know her well but I know she's meant to be a good 'un. Nice poppy beats for a sunny day, a bit repetitive.
Not really something I’d gravitate towards. Bit too poppy. But grand
Middledrama Not awful Not fantastic
Lorde! Only really listened to Pure Heroine, this started more poppy and electronic than I expected. Oh it's ecstasy. Decent album, not really for me though, definitely not as good as her first.
Melodramatic, no other word for it. Still pretty good though. 3 stars.
I’m not sure if this really annoys me or I kinda like it. Perhaps a mix of both.
Manufactured pop music.
WAY too long - thought her first was better
Nice lil head bopper. Writer in the Dark still goes hard, favorite on the album. Hard Feelings is a sexy track and a lot of these and nice optimistic tracks, it’s overall a more uplifting and involved contrast to the previous album.
3 stars
supercut is awesome
Surprisingly enjoyable. After a while her cursive singing voice gets somewhat irritating
A little too sad indie girl for me to really get into it, though Supercut is excellent
Ya, ok this was better than I thought. It’s like a more upbeat Enya or a whole album done by Bork that you could understand and it has better singing. I don’t have a choice cut because it seemed like one long song.
Good stuff
An average album by an average artist with average song writing ability! Why is average even on this list?
yearner. summer. nostalgic. Fav Songs: Green Light The Louvre Liability Writer In The Dark Supercut
I appreciate the ethereal electropop sound, but the vocal style wears. Green Light was the highlight.
Some great songwriting throughout. Feels a bit overproduced - I think the album would have benefitted from a bit less sheen. Green Light is a weak opener/lead single, but album cuts like Writer in the Dark are where Melodrama really shines.
Ok so I feel like I need explanations of my criteria’s 1- I hated it. 2- I wouldn’t prefer listening to it again but iz ok 3- its ok but I didn’t add anything to my liked songs 4- I like it but only added some songs to my liked songs 5- I very much liked it and would like to listen to it again and yes added to liked songs most of the album Sooooooo,,,,, I would’ve given this a 4 when I liked sad good looking girls music. But now I’m giving it a 3. I already have songs like that in my liked songs.
3.5
I really like her voice, but it was a little too "teenager issues" for me.
I know and like Greenlight and Liability, but haven’t listened to the full album before. It was alright, not good not bad. 3 stars.
I’ll admit I like the songs, but they’re mostly (all) the same formula: quiet solo singing with single note or chord, slow build to dance celebration - whatever the subject matter. It makes it difficult to round up.
I kinda like Lorde. Seems like a cross between Taylor Swift and Fiona Apple. Without the polish of Swift or the same level of talent as Apple. Better than most pop, these days. Not on this album, but I love Royals. <3 3.5*
T swift for people who say they are " too cool" for T swift. This album embodies the highs and lows of a young summer relationship. Very standard pop though, I kinda expected better from lord. Favorite track was Sober
A decent follow up to the vastly superior debut. It kinda peters out for me the last few tracks. Boom boom boom boom
This album was a struggle for me to get through. I’ll get my 3 main gripes out of the way; overproduction (pop - so I guess that’s a given, but it’s not my cup of tea), vocalising like a mouth full of honey only annunciating vowels (very of its time), and not singing in her own accent but putting on an American one instead. Those things being said - hats off to Lorde for her amazing career so far, she unconventional in many ways which is awesome, but her music is just not for me. 2 stars for the music, extra star for being a powerhouse lady from over the ditch
Outstayed its welcome a little near the end, but I didn't mind listening to this.
Not quite my cup of tea but was quite pleasantly surprised by this one. Not bad.
A little whiny, woe is me vibe that’s so popular these days
Low key Lorde with good vocals
I like Lordes style, and I believe her music is fresh twist on pop. Her delivery can be a bit slow and at times not easily digestible, but then she can really make some magic happen. I’m not a full album listener, but I enjoy her singles. I can understand the power here, just not appreciate it fully.
(listened to it twice) This album had a slow start for me. I was a bit underwhelmed by the first song. But then it just kept getting better and better from there. It made me think of Taylor Swift a lot, especially her "Midnights" album (I love that album), and I kept thinking Jack Antonoff had something to do with it. Turns out he did. Taylor (and a lot of other simplistic pop artist) must have been inspired by this album. I like this kind of very produced, but also minimalistic pop production and songwriting. Altough sometimes it did feel a bit too stillstanding and cheasy for my taste. Especially the piano ballad parts. Maybe I'll learn to love them But it did also feel different than the very mainstream sometimes. Her vocal sometimes gave me Kate Bush vibes with the despair and almost scream-like outbursts. And sometimes the production went out of it's way to sound noisy and disharmonic, which was kind of cool. I disagree with the track list. At least from a promotional point of view. I know it's a taste thing, but I just didn't vibe with the flow of the songs. Would have liked another openener. Will definitely come back to this album.
Album 713 of 1001 Lorde - Melodrama (2017) Rating : 2.5 / 5 Not a regrettable listen. I don't 'not' like it but don't see myself reaching for it again. Some decent indie pop.
I enjoyed this more than I anticipated. I would listen to it again.
Nice album, one or two songs I got into, but not my cup of tea.
A wanna be Lana Del Ray, harsh I know
Лучшая песня - The Louvre.
Ensikuulemalla 3.5/5
Seems almost the definition of a sophomore slump after the wild success of her first album, but there are some decent tracks here and her voice is beautiful.
Brilliant production and some really interesting songs. I did get tired of the breathless, overly affected vocals. Really good in small doses but overall not for me. I do see why people like her. Wish her the absolute best.
Some songs i really liked (Green light/Writer in the dark/Supercut) but not an album I see myself returning to often.
I enjoyed it at the time of listening but at the time of reviewing I can’t really remember much about it
Additional star for being Kiwi.
Drags a little in the middle but the highs are dizzy high. it's a 3.5
This is a pop album, a recent one at that. I knew of this album, I had heard a few songs before. I knew how well loved it was in specific circles. And listen, it was good. It was indeed a very melodramatic album in which Lorde is tired of being the "crazy girlfriend". It's an introspective album with a lot of self reflection and yearning. The lyrics were decent, if not a little dramatic (but I guess that's the point). It's definitely a "sad girl" album. But it's not life changing. I think I prefer the sound of Lorde's first album, the youthful innocence of it all. I fear that this album, in its attempt to be a mature departure from It's predecessor, fails to break out of It's juvenile sound. I feel like it could have leaned into it a little more and it would have been easier to digest. It's short and sweet, though and it's an easy listening. I still enjoyed it. There was a version of me a few years ago that would have LOVED this album but that just isn't me anymore. It's just a little vapid for me. And I don't particularly enjoy Jack Antonoff's production. Its usually a bit bland and similar every time. This could easily have been a Taylor album and I'd have never known the difference. Green Light and Supercut are bangers though so that pushes this album up to three stars.
not quite me but still great writing
Not really my thing. Good voice and some good writing, but... On 2nd listen, I was more impressed, both by music and lyrics.
Not really my thing but it was OK.
RIP Forever 21
Pretty straightforward and catchy songs. Happy to give it two listens through and not think about it too much more.
It was fine.
Unsure what I feel about this….. unlikely to revisit.
Selbstmitleid als Album
Yeah, it's ok. I couldn't feel anything groundbreaking or unique about it though, unsure why it's here!
Allyssa Beird loves running around her school listening to this. A few solid cuts, but overall a replacement level pop album.
Not bad. The usual teenage angsty romance stuff against commercial sounding pop. She does the talky breathy singing to make it appear more intimate. I liked Green Light. "I overthink your punctuation use Not my fault, just a thing that my mind do" ¿Am I overthinking her grammar usage?
Umm.. ok. She's had a few of these that distinguished themselves, but the breathy, lazy delivery combined with the bass club beat is... more melodrama than I felt like was warranted for the whole album. Billie Eilish is better at this style.
Ok...but nothing to bring me back.
Its interesting to critically listen to a ten year old pop album. There's just enough separation from its tropes that you can place it in a particular era without it just forming part of the FM slime permeating shops and your friends' car stereos. This holds up pretty well. Green Light combines Sia-esque melancholy vocals with heater production, building up tension without ever providing a satisfying resolution. Sober draws on the soca trend (which was a cool time I suppose, people drawing on wider Caribbean influences than just reggae and dancehall was the start of a more internationalist dance music scene.) Homemade Dynamite is the second single and along with The Louvre has this really satisfying crunchy percussion treatment. Liability strips back the instrumentation to highlight Lorde's heartfelt musings on fame and heartbreak. Hard Feelings continues to highlight Lorde's vocals by keeping the production backgrounded. It also continues the heartbreak themes. The production is great when it is restrained, giving you a sense that the whole studio is struggling to hold back heavy teenaged feelings. Loveless has a cutesy almost hyperpop style tonally at odds with Hard Feelings, hard to understand why these are mastered as a medley (although shout outs to the Kane West tribute FM congas and Phil Collins sample). The back end of the album starts to drag a bit with a lot of tracks just reprises from the first half. Supercut is an alright bit of electropop but doesn't wow as much as Green Light. Glad I heard this all the way through but given this kind of music is still pretty ubiquitous I might just settle for keeping an ear out for it in the supermarket.
77% Best: Green Light; Liability; Hard Feelings/Loveless Must-Hear? Not quite
It was fine. A bit more Tori Amos-y than I would have expected.
Never heard Lorde before and quite good. Will try to listen to more.
3 sterne
Passable sexy girl pop. I feel like Lorde could’ve done more interesting things with her voice.
Moody teen angst
Really great first half but DNF'ed sorry team. Would probably be a 7, I think.
Lot of difference in the music put modern
Liked it more than I remembered but not as much as the first one.
appears to have been played lots already without me chipping in
Randy Marsh is a fantastic singer: “I’m Lorde. Lorde, Lorde. Ya ya ya…” But seriously, a good pop album produced by Jack Antonoff. More of what has made him famous (particularly with Taylor Swift). For Lorde, I prefer her debut album which feels a little more raw. Favorite Songs: Green Light, The Louvre, Perfect Places, Homemade Dynamite 3.5⭐️
I don't think this was her best album. It was decent though. The 2nd half was better than the first half.
Good album with atmospheric sounds Favorite track: Green light other picks: louvre, liability, supercut
What’s this? A “modern” album that comes in at under 45 minutes? Thank the Lorde. This was OK. It’s a bit too modern for my taste, but it wasn’t boring or too hideously auto tuned.
Honestly beter dan ik had verwacht, leuk dat er ook pop is die kan wel interessant vindt Maar ja blijft wel pop
Green Light and Supercut were highlights . The rest was fine to listen to, but not something I'd seek out. -R&D
I know and like Greenlight and Liability, but haven’t listened to the full album before. It was alright, not good not bad. 3 stars.
The short instrumental section in "Hard Feelings" is the best part of the album. Overall, not a big fan of Lorde's singing voice.
pop I guess
Not really my style, Lorde has an amazing voice and the instrumentals are really cool on this album. But something just doesn't grab me, maybe I'll listen again some other time give it a fairer chance
I expected to like it way more.
I can appreciate aspects of the minimalist hip hop vibe, but not really my bag, felt a bit dull and not a massive fan of Lorde's voice. Silky production tho.
A masterpiece for 13 year old girls. A couple good hits but mostly generic sounding pop
YAYY!! felt like I was in middle school again. homemade dynamite!!!
Admittedly I don't listen to a ton of music that came out after 2010. It's just not my thing. I have some familiarity with Lorde from listening to the radio, but that's about it. Overall, this was alright. There were a few times I found myself trying to change my car's radio station while listening to this (force of habit) but I've heard a lot worse on this list. Not my favorite, but for post-2010 music on this list, this is far from the worst.
I always want to like Lorde more than I do. I don't dislike her, she's fine, but she rarely wows me. This album was no exception. A couple of solid songs and a lot of perfectly fine filler.
A solid pop album with some good hooks. Lorde's vocal performances are consistently great and it makes for a nice evolution from her debut. I don't think this is anything particularly special (although Liability is a nice, heartfelt ballad) but it was pretty popular when it came out and it's the first major work that Jack Antonoff produced, kickstarting his career as one of the major forces behind pop music in the past decade or so.
someone remind me when this review goes up to post that 1 amv of nick/gatsby set to green light by lorde. god this song is fun. BUT WHAT WILL WE DO WHEN WERE SOBER love this song actually. nature is healing its been 2 entire nights of no dad rock. love when the big trumpets come in here. funny that lorde apparently had the color association of this song that its blue/violet bc to me this sounds extremely green/copper but ig to each their own its kinda like this stuff is made up n imaginary? okay now were onto songs i dont know. thanks 4 evoking top gun once of the least atmospheric or cool or romantic movies ever (straight men i said what i said). i love her layered spacey vocals always. okay i lied ive heard the louvre a few times. sorry im not feeling too chatty in my stream of consciousness tonite but i do think its lamw that liability is jsut about herself n not the roommate whos actually in love w her and its a classic lesbian love story or something idk. i got interested but then i got bored again. lorde has a rlly fun voice i must say. even when shes singing a song abt straight romance. "theyre all gonna watch me disappear into the sun" okay...thats....thats kinda....mood. OOHH THW STRINGS BEND. ive never listened to this whole album all the way thru so interesting that the big romance is like 4 songs n then the breakup is the next 7 songs. ig thats kinda how it goes doesnt it. wait 3 years?? u were w this person for 3 years but then thats 4 songs n the breakup is 7 songs?? girl thats why youre getting divorced. i love the metal screechy door noises n the snaps in here w the strings its very fun. OOOOHH here we go audio dialogue sample n then changed beat on the song. i love the little bouncy melody singsongy cute voice n the underwatery(?? literally dont have vocab for the bg noises) but spelling a word out continues to b a risky play lyrically im not into it here. feels like this song fadesout bc she couldnt think of anything better to do w it. okay yes lets go melodrama. titledrop the album here reference the prev song as "II" lets go. OKAY yeah i hear a little bit of the melody of sober in here in THE TERROR AND THE HORROR ur RIGHT. this album would b pretty banger in a stage musical adaptation btw. its a perfect 1 acter length. this fucking rules i love this track taking the album into a like....more explicitly conceptual / narrative place instead of just "lets be fucked up abt the breakup" songs for the entire back half. OHHH OKAY she thinks of this as abt a house party....inchresting...........also mood on im a writer n now lets incorporate this fucked up event into a lot of fiction n intellectualize Productivist it so we dont have to think abt it as an upsetting event but its a part of ur brain space still as an event in the fiction ur toiling at n embellishing. she feels very kate bush in the "i love u till u call the cops on me" postchorus. shit my headphone batteries r gonna die but supercut is so fun please last another 10% hahahaa...ngl making me kinda tear up OH and then a liability reprise. maybe all this is the party okay so that is the concept album metaphor. want 2 do a vers of this thats like 1 of those shakespeare performance art pieces where they perform a different scene from hamlet or macbeth or smth in each room n u go btwn them. aw perfect places rlly makes me tear up n im not sure why. i would buy a physical copy of this record! major flaw: idk...has to be commercial pop not a performance art piece. i feel like lorde has the potential to turn into bjorke and do off the wall weird shit she just hasnt yet. i dont rmember the other things i do at the end of the review--standout songs: green light / sober / melodrama / supercut. sorry i was kinda out of it tonight guys but this was fun! its like a 3.5
