Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Bangers, bops, great tunes
Unexpectedly great
Aside from the sad girl vibe, pretty good.
Just an enjoyable album. We're the same age, so I have grown up listening to her music. There are some lyrics that seem a little funny, but it's Lorde, it's her style of writing. Just a solid album. I listened to it a few times.
Very good, though lyrically very heavy on the breakup lament, which I can only take so seriously from someone barely out of their 20s.
Lekker hoor, ik voel me ineens weer jaren jonger
Dit is toentertijd langs me heen gegaan, maar ik vind het verrassend goed!
3,8 Noo you are not a liability :(, Lorde I love you!
Kind of vocal pop with indie music. Excelent combination
Mola
YAY! Have listened many times, I love this album.
Good album… not as good as her first. Solid listen
Very good pop album! Had wanted to listen to this for years, but only knew one or two songs. Need to listen again, but I love Lorde's voice and the overall aesthetic of the sound. Great album cover too
Definitely legit and a few classics on here. But ultimately still Lorde and not exactly my style. Still solid
Good pop songs, I liked the variety in the songs. The production value is really good, with harmonic voices and instruments. It's a good album that I'd listen to again
Really dug it.
Liked this album. Good listen for if you're in the feels
Probably one of the more influential pop albums of the previous decade. Quite solid overall
Standard pop, nice as background noise.
4/5 actually it is a pretty nice album!
Really well done. I think this was a good follow up to her stellar debut. Lorde is legit.
"Green Light" Released: 2 March 2017 "Perfect Places" Released: 1 June 2017 "Homemade Dynamite" Released: 16 September 2017
1er album de lorde que j’ecoute. C’est fou comment on decouvre avec cette liste.je l’avais un peu boude a cause de son succes commercial mais j’ai aime le vibe de l’album. 4
I thought this album was pretty good musically, but Lorde's breathy vocals never appealed to me and some of the lyrics are painfully cliched. Still, there's enough here to get me interested in another album by her whenever it comes out
This was great. A little inconsistent but I enjoyed it all.
I would have picked Pure Heroine ez
Not the biggest fan of pop, but she's got a great voice and I enjoyed a few of the songs more than I thought I would!
It's ok, not really my thing.
Gave it a run through. Holding out on judgement for fear it’s premature.
i like some songs but not in the exact mood for her
Her first album is still her best album
Never fails to bring me right back to high school.
Its honestly a mixed bag, some nice moments but just lacking in something i can't really put my finger on. Doesn't help that it spawned a lot of rubbish
very melodramatic... Why is she singing like that? It really dislike when singers use an 'exaggerated voice'? For example, she managed to rhyme 'toy' with 'more' just by singing 'more' as 'moye', because of the way she sings. It's this weird way people have been singing since the mid 2010s up to today, in 2026, and some people still do. It's cringe and makes me feel uncomfortable. Honestly it kinda ruins this for me hahah Otherwise, the songs are pretty cool. Not really something I would add to my playlist to listen again, but appreciate from a distance... Like it's very impressive how many good and catchy melodies she can produce. Also very well produced, not overproduced at all, in my opinion; it's well balanced. I think this would've been much better if she didn't choose to sing like that. Probably wouldn't listen again and I didn't add any of these to my playlist, but would be happy if I heard one of these songs randomly, like on the radio or at the shops. It's all pretty decent.
I’m really not a synth pop person. There are some fun beats on this, but a lot of it sounds the same to me. There’s just something about synth pop that seems to pull all the believability out of the emotions in a song. This album survives that more than other Jack Antonoff albums I’ve heard. It does manage to hold onto a few good emotional moments, but it doesn’t escape it completely. There are moments where I really like her vocal style and moments where I don't like it. The more upbeat songs are the kind of music I would sing along to with people, but just sitting and listening to it does nothing for me (or annoys me tbh). This album gets an extra point because my friend put Supercut on a character playlist so it at least has that positive association for me. I also really like the album cover. I’m unfortunately just not a big fan of this genre. I told my friend “all Jack Antonoff music sounds the same to me.” I’m sure it’s not 100% true, but it feels true enough to stop me from listening again. Fav song: Supercut Least fav: Hard Feelings/Loveless
very experimental compered to her previous hits. i would say that slower and stronger rithms suit her voice better where she has to hit long notes. this was the point of her madness, i can still remember that iconic concert clip of her haha. i wonder what happened to her behind all of this
Couple of them were bangers but rest was just alright
it's a nice album. too edgy for my taste.
Enjoyed this more than I expected to, a few tracks I'd come back to.
It had its moments, but I felt it dragged on a bit towards the end.
Dull and wingey to me. But, I’m 74 and can’t relate, so my vote doesn’t count. She’s very talented, so she should definitely get away from Antonoff. He exploits and blunts talent. I’ll give her a 3 for a few decent songs.
I had only heard Royals back whenever that was popular, and nothing else from Lorde, so had no expectations of this. Was pleasantly surprised. There is a surprising amount of dynamics, creative rhyming schemes, and varying instrumentation (and dare I say 'progginess') that make this interesting to listen to. Lorde has distinctive voice that almost feels a little threatening. The first couple tracks are really good dance tracks, if it had kept up that I would say this could be a four stars. Unfortunately, it does start to wane as it moves to the back half of the album, and sounds a bit similar ballads. Still, don't regret listening to that. 3 stars.
This album is a vibe for me and some tracks stand out (Green Light, The Louvre, Supercut), but the fry and rasp in her voice is distracting at points and sometimes works against the music. A lot of it is quite same-y same-y. Really, I think I wish Lorde's music wasn't sung by Lorde. Rating: 3
3.5
Not my type
I'm not a Lorde fan. I barely now any of her songs. Yeah, only her singles. Or is it only one single "Royals"? I really don't know First I was like "Do I really need to listen to this album?" But I was surprised by this album. I really thought this would be a bad bad album. But it isn't. I don't say I will listen to it again next week or next month. Maybe I will never will listen to it again. But overall Lorde isn't that bad than I thought. 3/5
Very accurate album title
Nice songwriting and pleasant music
I recognize a few of these tracks by title, but have never listened to this album start-to-finish. Yeah, this was alright. I'm not over the moon about it, but it's not bad. Maybe a step above "Meh" but not something I feel compelled to listen to again.
It’s fine.
After actually listening to this album it feels to me that it’s built as a concept album where everything flows together. The problem is, there isn't enough variety to really tell one song from the next. It’s a lot of "plonk, plonk, plonk" sad piano - just one chord per bar ringing out with a basic beat behind it - and honestly, that’s really not my sort of thing. It does pickup on occasion and when it does it really works. There also isn't a single instrumental track on this album. The production is super polished - I’m pretty sure I know who produced this - but it’s so representative of that era that it feels like I’ve heard it all through cultural osmosis before. There is a lot of nuance in the instrumentation but, as it’s a pop album, none of this is done in a way that comes to the front and takes focus away from the vocalist. I expect fans of this will focus on the lyrics and the story, but this is not something I care about, and if there was anything here I completely missed it. She swears a few times, which isn't a problem, but it occasionally feels like a calculated attempt to shed a teenage pop-star persona; it comes off as a bit performative, though she pulls it off with a certain goofy charm. It’s not all misery, though. When the record actually decides to switch things up, it works: - "Green Light", I'm going to guess was the main single from this album, has a high energy chorus which shifts from a minor to major sound and that really gives it a lift. - "The Louvre" really stood out to me thanks to the distorted drum breakdown and that guitar outro. - "Hard Feelings/Loveless" had a noisy breakdown that was a really welcome change of pace. - "Perfect Places" is the perfect way to wrap it up. It all builds to a great crescendo. The beat really drives it and the snare has such a satisfying snap to it. I love the emphasis on the word “Fuck” on this one - It’s definitely something which will appeal to the younger pop fans who want to feel naughty, rude, and grown up. Overall, it’s a well-made record, but I don’t think I’ll be coming back for more. I think I still prefer the Randy Marsh version of her. I’d like to see her collaborate with other musicians and not just work with a producer - I think that’d be a net benefit for everyone involved and could create something really, really interesting. It would be unfair to give this a 2/5 just because it's not my usual thing. I expect it probably landed for people who are into this style and succeeded in what it was going for - evident by it's inclusion in this list. So, it gets a completely cromulant 3/5 from me.
It's hard for me to give this an unbiased listen, having followed Lorde since before her first album came out and gone to see her on the tour for this album. I also was deep into the lore, including the viral PowerPoint, so it's hard to be objective here. I do think this was a pioneering pop album at the time, as a concept album, in terms of production and in terms of the lyricism. It's influence on pop music in the last decade cannot be understated. I also think that the album is a victim of it's own success. Antonoff's production hallmarks on this album are so oversaturated to the point of derision. Lyrics now have to be witty, relatable, or full of lore for clickbait, to encourage more streams. That is not solely because of this album but an important part. There are standouts on this album for me. Greenlight is a standout, a weird and odd pop banger. Homemade Dynamite, Perfect Places - very cromulent pop songs. Outside of the singles, though, I think this album suffers from taking itself too seriously, with Lorde trying to overcome the huge success of Royals. I prefer the naiveté, clumsiness, and outsiderism of Pure Heroine.
Decent album. Enjoyable listen. Nothing groundbreaking IMO. This rating is in comparison to others on this list.
Every iteration of the 1001 list suffers from recency bias, and this is a perfect example. This album was heaped with praise when it came out, but does it really hold up almost a decade later? I like the synth/electronic elements, but the other side of that coin is that it’s a bit over produced. Such a different style it scarcely sounds like the same musician who did Pure Heroine. So much of the compositions sound samey, relative to all the other pop music that hits the charts. There’s a reason for that. It’s produced by Jack Antonoff. Might as well be listening to a Taylor Swift album. I’m so over this guy’s chokehold on the music industry.
Blind album, know the artist. Never really cared for Lorde's work and this isn't an exception to that. But TIL shes from New Zealand. 3
Couldn't vibe with this one. Didn't think much of the lyrics, melodies or harmonies. Production mood was mostly arena-okay, but also genuinely unsettling and cool on Hard Feelings/Loveless (my favorite song on the album). It was pleasant to listen to it a few times, but it kept reminding me of stuff I like more, sorry Lorde.
An up and down album. Songs ranging from decent to whiny borefests. Smack dab in the middle of the pack.
Fine album, first and last tracks are great but the rest is kinda filler.
This is a good album. More dynamic than Pure Heroine and a better showcase for her vocals. The production is good here too. Super 2010’s sad girl. Favorites were Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, Hard Feelings/Loveless, and Perfect Places.
I really love her voice. By the end it was kind of too much of a good thing but that may have been my headspace.
Perfecta!
I can't help but think of South Park listening to this. YA Ya Ya. Green Light is an ok song. I quite enjoyed Sober as well. Hard Feelings has a nice beat, too. I think Lorde has better singles, though, Royals just has awesome pop hooks and isn't included here. But that was released on an EP so fair enough that this is the Lorde album chosen.
It's ok. Listened to it on a walk. Obviously written for younger people high school/college but it is all catchy
*Good 2010s era female singer songwriter album *I still like Royals as her best work
Kind of a breath of fresh air to have a slick modern pop record on this list.
Felt like a true sophomore effort. A little darker, a little more character, and a pretty solid album all around. I had not listened to much of it before, but I will again. 3+
The disappointing follow up. It’s not awful - quite ok really. But not must listen. She has the potential to be a major artist - as in Elton John or Joni Mitchell major. Whether she wants that or not is up to her. And I don’t think she does. But none of that is any of my business. The must listen is the first one. This one is ok and worth a listen. But not must listen.
Unverständlich warum nicht das m.E. bessere 2013er Album in der Liste ist. Das hatte mehr Originalität, weniger Anbiederung an Popkonventionen und m.E. auch die besseren Texte. Naja früher war alles besser.
The singles were great but the rest were pretty similar
The production on this record was phenomenal from start to finish. It had some really strong tracks, and even though I couldn’t connect with a large portion of them, I still appreciate them for what they are. It’s always fascinating to hear how production evolves over time. The songs are layered and crisp while still maintaining simplicity. I’m definitely coming back to this album to see if I can connect with it more deeply. It manages to stay fresh and consistent throughout, and overall it feels like a very well-executed project. I really liked "Homemade Dynamite" and "Sober II (Melodrama)", with the latter definitely taking the crown as the best song on the album. The transition when the drums hit genuinely made me turn my head and start vibing hard.
I am Lorde. Yah yah yah. Not my usual vibe but this was pretty good
Album blocked in ny area.
Kind of a hard album to rate for me. I do like the sound Lorde brings, and recognize its influence on the modern pop scene; but judging on its own merit, the album (lyrics and performance) is not the most interesting.
Cositas. Pero en su mayoría estuvo ok. Igual banqué mucho más que Channel Orange.
Very solid Pop
Lovely girl relaxing music
Nothing awful, but so much less interesting than Pure Heroine - Royals was one of the more interesting hit songs of the last decade or so.
Moody teenage breakup vibes, less of a fan of the pop transition
Hmmmm….I’m just not who this album was made for and that’s ok.
6/10
I was somewhat surprised to go back and see the love this album got back in 2017 when it came out, but that being said - I think this is a cohesive and tasteful pop record with one foot in heartbreak and one foot in party mode. Knowing all the production tricks Jack A. has up his sleeve in 2026 may diminish the power some songs have now, as opposed to upon its release but nevertheless...The synths and drums slide, smolder and burst alongside Lorde's breathy vocals. Impressive that she was a teenager when this was made! I heard 'Royals' a million times in the old restaurant I worked at, and these songs are much more interesting.
Big standard girly pop.
My first Lorde album and a bit of a disappointment. I enjoyed the 2 piano songs - Liability and Writer in The Dark. However I found the rest quite overproduced and not making the most of her voice.
Perfectly fun and fine pop album. Gets a little same-samey at times. Her voice is interesting but she tends to use a similar pattern of inflection across songs, or at least that's something my ear picked up on. Royals (not on this album, I know that much) is a great song, didn't hear a great song on this one.
i don't know shit about Lorde except she's never seen a diamond in the flesh. this is not what I expected, but not in a bad way
Ok
Sounded like Taylor swift
It’s got its strengths for sure, its emotionally driven with the occasional fun track and that should match what i’m generally in to, but for whatever reason this just didn’t truly click for me. To be clear i like it but Idk i feel like i should be into this more than i was. Standouts are green light, homemade dynamite, supercut and both Liability parts.
She’s got an interesting voice. The album was good, but didn’t blow me away. If somebody put it on I’ll enjoy it, but I wouldn’t seek it out.
Pop-minded and talented, but occasionally feels like being asked to admire the lighting design as much as the songs.
kind of boring
Lorde?? curious. I always was under the impression this album was mid but lets see. By far the newest album on this list ive had to review Hard feelings/Loveless cool song but Loveless is the best part and i wanted more of it :( Supercut
It's possible that my review of this album might be somewhat unfair, as someone who's become quite fatigued of Jack Antonoff's production style in the year 2026. Perhaps I would've received his now clichéd use of airy reverberating synth pads and filtered minimalistic percussion loops more positively if I had been listening to this for the first time in 2017, but unfortunately some of these songs sounded a bit stale for my liking. Many of the instrumentals don't feel tailored to Lorde specifically, and I kept expecting to hear Taylor Swift's voice come in. From what I had heard of Lorde before, I wasn't expecting a mind blowing vocal performance or anything, however I did still find some tracks underwhelming in this regard, particularly when I could hear the robotic pitch correction trying to fight through Lorde's brash alto sing-speaking on songs like Liability (and its reprise). It could be considered unreasonable to judge a Lorde album by it's singing prowess, as her strengths have always been her writing skills and creativity (another reason why I dislike the generic Antonoffslop production). Fortunately, the writing on this album is strong overall, and I think the lyrics more than make up for not being my favorite album vocally. Perhaps unsurprisingly based of the title, you get the sense a lot of genuine melancholy went into the creation of this album, and Lorde is able to convey very convincingly what her mental state at the time of writing Melodrama was in a uniquely Lorde way that resonated with a lot of her listeners. My grievances about the production style aside, there were still a few songs I quite enjoyed, which seemed like ones that deviated from the more formulaic Antonoff beat construction, such as Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, and Perfect Places. In summary I'd say it was a good, not a great album to me, but I can appreciate the likely reasons for why it was included in this list.
Pleasantly surprised by this, again not my genre but I liked it a lot more than I thought. The opening track I’ve heard to death and not a fan of but the album itself was nice and didn’t overstay its welcome, one I might return to later in the future
Strong opener with intro and first verse but didn’t love chorus, sober, homemade dynamite, the louvre, and liability didn’t love but strong buildup to hard feelings/loveless, which was highlight of album, strong continuation with sober II melodrama, beautiful let down with writer in the dark, didn’t love super cut it didn’t fit in that place of the album and wasn’t very cohesive, but liability reprise was a fantastic lead in to perfect places which was a strong closer. Overall solid b tier.
Unique voice, great lyrics
I think Lorde stands above many of her singer-songwriter contemporaries. This is a great collection of pop songs, driven by heartfelt lyrics.
2.64
Cool. Would listen to again.
This passed me by originally as im old and male so i went in with trepidation. However i was pleasantly surprised. The lyrics were punchy, the production was good and there are nice tunes in here. I found her vocals a bit breathy and formulaic and it sounded quite generic at times, but i listened twice and enjoyed it.
Niet slecht, maar alles bij elkaar ook vaak saai 2,5
It definitely sounds good, even catchy at some points (the first track), but this kind of music isn’t really my type :)) The name of the album represents it well
Mais legal do que eu achei que seria, mas ainda um pouco ... monótono? Acho que falta peso em alguma das músicas. Eu sinto que a Lorde se acha muito darkzera e essas músicas tão ali do lado da Taylor Swift.
I probably won't be returning to this album often (if ever) but there's a sincerity in the delivery and compositions that I appreciate. Also thank you for creating a modern album that isn't 100 minutes long and full of crap that should've been left on the editing room floor.
Never understood the hype over this album. It’s not bad by any means, but it’s nowhere near life-changing to me. It’s an enjoyable listen.
Some good tunes here, and the depth of references is impressive
Album pop carino, forse rientra tra i 1001 migliori album oat, ma a questo punto sono troppi album
I was expecting much more from this album based on other reviews, but, to me, it really underdelivered. There were obviously a few that I thought were decent, but nothing that pricked up my ears. I have, outside of this album, heard a few other songs by Lorde, and these just don't match up to those compositions. I feel that, in many songs, there wasn't much emphasis on the beat of the track, so I spent the first half of many songs, like 'Liability (Reprise)', trying to figure out the beat of the song... and with her singing over the top of a track with no emphasis, it sounded really out of time even though it wasn't. However, I did also find that with the songs with a clear beat, some of the lines were very off-beat, and it just made it quite hard to listen to. That being said, again, I did enjoy a few tracks. Favourites: Green Light Liability Sober II (Melodrama) Supercut
Good, but I think I’ve aged out of this genre.
Enjoyed this.
Nice pop album.
Third album in a row that sounds like this. It felt like most of the album was the same song. She is clearly talented, just not for me. 2.5/5 Won't listen again
Some good songs. Many average ones.
Mmmm pues es bueno pero no es muy de mi gusto
Somewhere between cool and lame, heaven and hell. Talent and creativity but maybe I'm just old and bitter and don't like where this type of music took pop culture.
I do love drama
I wanna meet the guy who’s jacking anton off. A bit boring but a few song like dynamite and green light were good but overall wasn’t that impressive to me.
I enjoyed this (especially "Liability").
- i remain obsessed with this album cover - i was already familiar with liability, supercut, perfect places, writer in the dark - i feel like her music is maybe not 100% my style but i do like some of the songs - favorites: green light, supercut - rating: 3/5
Me gusta mucho su estilo relajado y a la vez tan caótico, buen álbum.
I enjoyed it. A ton of hype around this album, and it's good and all, but didn't quite live up to everything I've heard.
Was fine. Nothing that stood out. More of a background music, but pleasant to listen to
No es mi gusto personal
Pretty good
I liked it but I didn't love it; I prefer to keep discovering other albums.
Sounds good.
I love Green Light forever
7/10 flojo.
Not sure how I feel about this album I enjoyed it, but not the way that I thought I should It's fine. I'm sure that if I had been in my 20's when this album came out I would have been more into it but my musical taste was solidified in the late 90s.
As a gen Xer that knows little about this sub genre or era, Lorde seems to be a much better songwriter than a lot of the others out there. I liked this album.
Non una pietra miliare, ma ci sono brani davvero sorprendenti come The Louvre o Liability Da riascoltare almeno 1 volta
I dont often like the popish singer types of artists but lorde has some songs that can hit me for some reason. The fact she uses a more instresting soundscape really elevates her sound. I think this album is petfectly between a 3 and a 4 for me.
I find it difficult to form an opinion about this record. The cover is beautiful, Lordes singing equally so and the production is of very high quality. At release it would have probably sounded fresh and a nice departure from pop of the time. I however am listening to it in 2026 and it's sound does not hold up in my opinion. I have heard Jack Antinoffs formulaic enough these past few years as it seems every lady in pop has to make atleast one album with the guy. This is some of his better work, still halfway through a number the formula becomes boring as musically it doesn't do anything exciting. The vocals are good, but in my opinion don't fit really well with the production style. A singer with more energy, more 'oomph' to their voice would fit better. All in all it's a fine album that isn't helped by the fact I don't care for breakup songs
Not my thing, nothing wrong with it, just not terribly interesting for me.
Thought I’d like this more - I like her voice and music itself and lots of good hooks but the lyrics are too corny/cringey for me at times and does remind me of Taylor swift in the ways that I don’t like Taylor swift sorry lorde !!!
Nothing I am particularly fond of, but it was groovy enough and felt as though there was a lot of emotion behind it
I'm not a fan of modern radio pop but Green Light is a great song. This might grow on me with further listens but unfortunately I'm allergic to the crammed and generic production. Wonder if it sounded better 9 years ago.
It was a solid listen and emotionally packed. Realizing as a middle aged white guy that I'm not the intended target of those emotions, I will say I clearly knew it wasn't aimed at me, but it was still a good listen. There wasn't anything real memorable about it, but I'll probably give it another spin.
Ooooh getting drunk on a Wednesday!!!! Yea I mean, this was ok I guess.
Pleasant enough without doing anything to particularly excite me.
I remember the hype around this album right before it came out was crazy. First song is great but everything else kind melds into itself.
It's modern pop and I guess not even that modern anymore. It's fine, obviously it's got that standard compelling-pop beat, but it's also forgettable. I guess rather Lorde than almost any of her contemporaries for me. 3/5
Good album from Lorde, but something felt a bit empty on this album. I wanted to give it a 4, but it felt like it was missing something. None the less, good product and solid performance form her.
I went into this album with the thought “Ewwww skylar music” but, I was happily surprised while listening to Lorde. I liked the order of the album I think every song compliments one another and the album flows very well.
Started strong with the first 3 songs, but I only really liked 3 other songs. Her singing is quite raw.
Ngl it’s a modern classic
not really my cup of tea but overall pretty ok i suppose 3/5
Some nice production choices. Lyrics fairly interesting. But modern pop not really for me.
Enjoyed this. Probably won’t listen again
Really well produced and enjoyed it more than expected (★★★½)
Aye it's fine. Fair play to her but nothing that really stood out and spoke to me .
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, some pop bangers, some Kate Bush-esque moments. Can't not think of that video of her shooshing the audience for trying to sing along to Writer In The Dark. Good album, probably a 3.5 but I couldn't possibly give a shoosher more than a 3.
Estuvo bastante bien, pero no acabé de conectar con el álbum.
I’m not a big Lorde fella but I don’t mind her
like the lyrics, like the music, i just struggle with her voice
I never got into Lorde when the hype was hype'ing. So far this is fun! Feels a bit Charli XCX.
No es mi estilo pero bastante bien
Enjoyed it - a couple of bangers - and some interesting soundscapes. Vocally its a little bit effected and lyrically makes me feel old :-( Not enough cheese.
Sounds like your average modern pop album. A bit darker to make it cooler. Ticks a box.
Pleasant. Not awful, not great. I guess I’m glad I spent some time with this, but there’s nothing that will compel me to listen again.
I’m not the target audience and the lyrics are written so clearly by 21 yr old rich white women- but the production for EDM and the piano songs are solid.
I liked the album the most at the beginning and then with diminishing results. It was fine for a pop album but wouldn’t be something I return to.
2.7
kind of liked it. too pop for me but ok
Fine
Good, great songs, modern, loved by Tally.
ok
Solid pop album, highlights are homemade dynamite and liability
Ok. Not as good as the debut.
Couple of good songs, Writer In The Dark especially. Also some I really didn't like Hard feelings/Lovesless.
As a musician, I always listen to the music first and the singer second. The issue I have with artist like Taylor Swift and Lorde is that the songs are so bland musically. I can’t overlook that. You can be a great singer and have fantastic, musical songs too. Look at Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Brandi Carlile. These songs are just as exciting as wet cardboard. I understand the themes she was going for here but it’s been done more musically by other artists before. This is unseasoned, bland soup. Remember to add seasoning to your meals and music too.
She has a fantastic, passionate voice, and the music is well-performed and well-written. Her songs remind me a bit of Joni Mitchell - they often don't have a traditional verse/chorus structure, but are more like free verse. Some of her rhymes don't quite click for me, but otherwise it's a solid album.
I watched Lorde performing at Glastonbury last year and felt that wave of inevitability wash over me that must happen to us all at some point that ‘I think I’m too old to get this’. She obviously appeals to a large swathe of gen alphas and is the best of a similar bunch, but seems to at least be more authentic than the Lana del reys, billie eilish, and Taylor swifts that seem to be competing for a similar audience. A well produced album that at least has some dynamic contrasts to keep things a little fresh.
This is pretty good. I hadn't listened to any Lorde really, other than Royals. A bit of a stylistic mismatch for me personally, but maybe it would grow on me. I find slower stuff kinda takes more listens for me personally.
Equal parts really good and annoying. Confected, high pop production of the late 2010s means you have to work to enjoy what are some decent vocals from a singer with some genuine star power. The simpler, rawer songs are really quite good and there’s an underlying confidence in the music. The hit singles are good in their own right but even for the style you can’t avoid the feeling it’s overdone. This is probably a high water mark in pop of the 2010s so marking accordingly.
What a surprise! I enjoyed most of her songs!
One hit, the rest was background?
6.5/10
My only exposure to Lorde has been the South Park parodying, so I didn't really know what to expect from this. Mostly good vocals though not all of it was to my taste. Definitely reminiscent of Kate Bush in places. Even uses the same sound effects in one of the tracks! There's a nice mixture of electronic and acoustic through the album; some tracks are mostly piano and vocals, others use quite a lot of synth. Overall though the sound/tone doesn't vary _massively_. It was all pretty nice, some interest, perfectly good background. Probably not an artist I'm going to rush back to but I enjoyed the listen well enough.
heard this before. Green Light is a peak pop song and my favourite Lorde song by far but the rest is pretty unmemorable
Standouts: Green Light Sober II Perfect Places I think this album has a lot going for it but most of the songs ended up mushing together due to over usage of reverb. I think the standouts managed to land a good balance but ultimately they dropped the ball on the rest The standouts were amazing however so low 3
I need another listen with this, and to really take a deep dive into the lyrics. I can’t tell if this album is just pretty good, or if it’s brilliant. I think it may be brilliant, as Lorde seems to be known for her introspective lyrics. I also really like her voice, it’s unique. Musically, some tracks are better than others, but again I think I need it all to click.
попсее прикольно
iconic, but not my style
i heard this album before i think...
Compared to her contemporary pop-girlies, this is very listenable. Still not my bag.
I don’t know what it is about this album but it doesn’t resonate with me very much. Like it’s okay but I don’t think I’ll be actively going back for it. Love the cover art though!
Good album with a couple of strong songs. A couple of peaks but mostly valleys on this one.
Surprised by some of the production on this actually. Have never listened outside the ubiquitous tunes. I like Sober! Kind of hard to separate this album from the moment it generated at the time in my mind, but it was alright like 6/10. Like it slightly more than I thought I would
For modern pop, Lorde is alright. Still not my thing but it's okay. Enjoyed "Homemade Dynamite" and the Loveless half of "Hard Feelings/Loveless" the rest of the album isn't bad to me, just didn't grab me at all.
As a certified tumblr girl, I love Lorde’s Royals. This album was nice, full of pop bangers, but wasn’t anything special for me. Just didn’t hit the more ironic earnestness I like, instead just pure earnest.
Good album
pretty okay white girl sad pop
Oooo lorde lorde…. I really enjoyed this album today , i find her voice infectious, it’s not the best voice mind but it works very well. Hints of hip hop, samples, pop, electronic, are pretty good for what she’s doing. I don’t understand why her 2013 album isn’t the album of choice with royals on if I’m honest. ( I don’t really get some album choices) Green light is obviously the banger on here, pop classic, homemade dynamite is well made for me and the Louvre. Other than that it is pretty samey. I really hope she wrote most of her songs or had a hand in it, if so more respect for her. It’s middle of the road for me still but it was a nice change.
Lord’s album Melodrama is a sign of the new generation of artist coming up and coming out. I personally liked her album, Pure Heroine and the Love Club EP better, but this album is also solid. I appreciate it, especially that she deviated from the sounds of the first two albums and made this both were more radio friendly and personal. I also think it’s interesting that she has the ability of seeing sounds in colors, because much this album moves in both emotional and lyrical waves. Key songs were me were the club-friendly Green Light, and Supercuts, which has an even better remix not on this album. Though I respect her more recent albums, they don’t have the same power of her freshman and sophomore efforts . Maybe someday she’ll return to it.
good tunes
Lorde was able to really blend pop into this album and explore more.
it's no pure heroine
Bowie said she was the future of pop and I guess he was right. But as with Billie Eilish, I'm just having a hard time truly getting into her music. But it kind of feels like it may be worth trying and checking out any new material of hers.
3.5 ❤️
Not listened to much Lorde but this album has a nice mix of electro-pop songs which is pretty impressive a follow up LP at only 19.
3/5
I didn’t dislike it but I won’t return. I love the expression and variety in Lorde’s voice, but the music itself is a bit teen angsty and focused on romance for me. It’s easy listening for the 2010’s. Inoffensive and unobtrusive.
Never listened to before, couple of good tracks but I'm 52 so probably not aimed at me
Good Adele cover
I think the album is great and original, but I had a hard time fully getting into it, especially the first half of the record. I really appreciated the songs Liability, Writer in the dark and supercut. 3.5/5
I feel the drama here, even if it's not entirely mellow. It's juicy, entertaining, and captures my attention. But like so much drama, it's almost entirely forgettable once the next big thing comes along.
Lorde's commanding voice anchors Melodrama's sleek, theatrical pop production, even if the songwriting doesn't always match her undeniable presence.
Temp
This is an alright album, it has that typical Lorde sound, I feel like, and it's overall not bad. It's fine having it in the background and there are even songs that actually aren't too bad properly listening to. I would say that it's maybe a bit above meh status.
Not bad.
iconic 2010’s whisper tunes consistent sound not an album id obsess over
Lyrics smyrics
Chato, nenhuma música me cativou muito.
Not for me. Imagine it would be great if i was a 14 year old girl going through puberty though Standouts - green light, the Louvre
Struggled rating this one. I like lorde as an artist, Great opener with green light but not very many songs after which stood out and made me remember them 3 is a bit harsh 3.5 but couldn’t give it a 4. I would go back and listen to it one again in the future though so maybe it is a 4 star. Who knows not me?!
Favourite: green light, supercut Rating: 6.510 Anmerkungen: kannte nur die die man kennt, die anderen auch ganz nett
A bit too angsty for me.
pretty solid but I prefer her older somgs
This is cheesy songwriting to me but Green Light in ‘New Girl’ and Supercut in ‘Someone Great’ was really pivotal in my development so extra points
Loved the first half and final song. Surprised there is more then royals I like from her
Pretty good, her voice is way more versatile than I imagined. The tracks were pretty consistent, nothing I’d really consider a dud, but as a whole this album didn’t really jump out at me. Not sure if I’ll ever come back.
Quite good, but not a single song that lured me.
A lot more pop-like than I thought it would be.
Голос певицы похож на голос курящего подростка. Отношение нейтральное.
Not a bad album, but not something I’d find putting on in my free time like Pure Heroin. It’s a departure from that album for sure, as the style is totally different, but coming back and listening to this for the first time years later you can hear Lorde’s evolution.
idk
Interesting more complex dark pop album.
Fun pop tracks. Falls off a bit in the second half. Needs a second listen to truly appreciate.
Only one good song. Green Light. Did not like. Too vibey
Can’t help but seperate the knowledge of how young Lorde was when writing this from the experience of listening to it. I might have just forgotten the style of 2017 but this feels a bit overwritten for me in a way that makes a lot of sense for a 20 year old - still enjoyable but not a writing style that resonates with me all that much. Some highlights though for sure i really liked Sober II in particular and overall made me want to listen to more of Lorde’s new stuff
Jack Antonoff feels like the Russo Brothers of music in that he will make silky smooth crowd pleasers that don’t actually scratch any itch. Listening to this album, I’m never offended or put off or anything but I’m also never listening to something that mean anything to me.
3.5
I liked it but the way she delivered some of the lyrics was not for me. I t seemed like she was just reading words and not singing.
Not my style, but a very nice album. Would definitely listen to some of these tracks again. Writer In The Dark is a beautiful track. Really love the cohesiveness of this album.
Jack Antanoff blehhhhh. Some of it is good
Jamais trop accroché avec lorde malheureusement 😔
6.5/10
like some, others are not my fav
Above average pop album but nothing particularly impressive. There are some cool unique parts, and the production quality is very good. But it's still a vocal-focused pop album, which is not for me, but it was still enjoyable. 7/10
Fun record. Lorde has been an artist I’ve enjoyed, but haven’t really been drawn too closely to. This record has some nice parts, and her voice is quite angelic and beautiful. The production is modern pop, and acts as a nice complement to the vocal harmonies.
It's a good pop album with polished production and some catchy anthemic hooks. It just lacks some oomph, which is my main concern with it. 6/10
Some catchy songs. Good thoughout
I can say objectively that this is a very good album, but the style of music doesn’t interest me and I don’t love Lorde’s voice. I’m realizing a lot the music that’s super popular, but not for me ends up being produced by Jack Antonoff. So maybe I’m just not a big fan of him. I don’t like this for a similar reason I don’t love Taylor Swift or Lana Del Rey. I do love her Pure Heroine album though!
3.5! Eu gosto do álbum, mas it's not really my thing. Tem algumas músicas que gosto bastante, mas outras que nem tanto (liability e afins). Já tinha escutado antes, obviamente. Eu gosto muito da voz dela.
Did not think I would enjoy this but to my surprise it made me feel warm on a cold day.
Green Light is such a good song!
It was ok
This is very good but doesn't quite rise to excellence. I actually think it's pretty good as a breakup album, but there are parts that just feel like generic pop music, which drags this down some. Favorite track: Maybe "Homemade Dynamite"
New to me. Green Light is the highlight and I was looking to see how the album would build, but it didn’t. Nice production and glossy presentation, but too ordinary. I can see and hear the success, but not for me. 1. Green Light 2. Sober II (Melodrama) 3. Perfect Places
First listen and it feels like Sia without the charisma. It has some really likeable aspects, but it gets worse after the eccie vibe of Green Light. I like Lorde’s vocal, which works with the uptempo tracks more than the more stripped back tracks, despite the Kate Bush falsetto on Writer in the Dark. It is really front loaded, and frankly I was underwhelmed.
Blending pop music and electronic and indie music. Not as good as Lana or Taylor or Carly…
Really? It's good but, no. Off this list with you.
Good, well-textured pop album that hits deeper than most.
Better than expected - a halfway house between Kate Bush and 2025 white girl pop. Found myself singing one of the songs in my head!
I like her voice but the songs are too similari.
Plutôt sympa comme écoute, pas de grande révélation ni de morceau qui ressort mais un album qualitatif
Interesting, I like her voice but not sucked in by the muisic.
I remember when this one came out, it showed an evolution from her first record and it sounds more pop but still her style remains as one of the defining factors, a trailblazer force. Songs feel more personal and it flows nicely through the main singles. Love it, but I don't listen to it as often.
Solid pop album, feels a bit overproduced (I prefer my pop stars a little more vulnerable and messy, but maybe that says more about me than them) but overall it worked. Reminded me of the hood Taylor Swift album we reviewed (1989 I think)
Lorde is a little too close to shoegaze for my personal taste, and I don't care a lot for the artsy pop sound either. I managed to find enough to like about this album, though. Lorde's a great songwriter and created a unique, experimental album. "Liability," the most striped down song on Melodrama while containing emotionally raw lyrics, was way more my speed, and is why I'm giving the album a 3.
This is the first time I've really dove into Lorde since her debut album. This album immediately resonated strongly with Jack Antonoff's influence; in a way, it sounds like it could be a Taylor Swift album. Neither of these details are necessarily bad things, but they are observations nonetheless. It did maybe take away from the uniqueness that made her stand out in the first place back on that debut album. Also, if this album was going to take this particular direction, I could have done with it leaning more into the sound of the opening track, "Green Light". But I digress -- this is still certainly a listenable and enjoyable album.
I own a copy because I like Lorde, and this is a solid mellow morning cup of coffee and a bowl album, but Pure Heroine best be on this list or there will be hell to pay. 3.5⭐️
I have nothing good or bad to say about this.
Ok, not bad, just not my beat
I remember when this album came out. I really wanted to like it cause the cover art is so pretty. But it just didn't click then, and while I liked it more this time, it still doesn't really land for me.
I’m one of those sickos that prefers Lorde’s more recent albums, but Melodrama is still great. There’s a sincerity to her writing that saves a lot of her songs from being cheesy. Great pop music, and always someone who delivers
Not really for me, but I definitely ses that this is a very well made album
i liked a few songs but didn’t finish album solid few gems 💎 though
Was a find for me. Loved the voice and the vibe. Will listen to more of her in the future.
I like Lorde, and could understand Pure Heroine being on the list. But this one? A few good tracks but otherwise, pretty run of the mill 2010s pop.
Not my style of music but I can appreciate it for what it is not a hard listen at all. Lined a few songs kinda sounded like house music.
It's ok. Forgettable
I generally think I don’t like the Antonoff thing, which is not the fault of the singer here, but it is her problem. There was some cool stuff here though. I liked it more than I expected to. Put it this way, I would listen to another Lorde record based on having heard this one.
Decent but not life altering stuff.
This sounds like a very specific time in alternate pop album production.
"Yaa yaa, feelin' good on a Wednesday..." Hard to believe this all started with Randy Marsh singing in a bathroom. Autotune. Outside of the world of South Park, I always liked and respected Lorde from the little I’d heard, mostly "Royals". So I was happy to dive into Melodrama when it popped up. But honestly, I think I liked Lorde better when I knew less of her music. I do appreciate the concept. A whole album structured around a house party is clever, and I can definitely see why people love this. But I just couldn’t get into it. The musicality never grabbed me. I was waiting for something as innovative and catchy as "Royals", but it never came. Sure, this isn't my type of music, but Billie Eilish isn’t my type of music either, and I love her stuff. So I don’t think it’s a taste-barrier issue. It just didn’t click with me. I admire the idea more than the album. It was grand, but I wouldn’t rush back for a re-listen. Sorry Randy.
Supercut and Green Light do a lot of the work here. Seems like if this album hits you when you need it, it’d be amazing.
I listened to this a lot in 2017 when it came it, it reminds me of crying on the ttc. I always liked pure heroin a lot more, and a definitely have jack antanoff fatigue in 2025
Better than average pop record. Had some gems and some forgettable tracks as well. I liked it more than I had expected to not hearing much more than. “Royals” from Lorde. Not too shabby. 6/10 Favorite tracks- “Sober” “Homemade Dynamite” “Perfect Places”
I put it on in the background while I was doing housework, totally forgot what I was listening to and wound up really enjoying a couple of songs. It's an interesting mix of styles I like and styles I don't care about she has a nice voice and once again I was pleasantly surprised If I've been paying more attention there might be one or two songs I would want to hear again.
Melodrama is the perfect name for this album. it definitely captures the spirit of young teenage angst , and from afar seems to take itself way too seriously. I can see how this might appeal to some but to me it did come off as a tad predictable and at times downright boring.
I listened to Solar Power a few times when it came out and remember enjoying it at the time. Listening to Melodrama now, I understand how Solar Power got mixed reactions because, from what I remember, it's a very different feel than Melodrama; Solar Power is a mostly fun, summer album about getting stoned in the sun and talking about philosophy and Melodrama is a sad, angsty, dark album about getting over a break up. Overall, the production on Melodrama is fantastic and there are some catchy hooks for sure, but I just don't really relate to it. It's not a bad record, just not something I'm going to listen to again.
Not a bad poo album
3/5
A little more repetitive pop than the more lyrically substantive “Royals” and “Team” I’m familiar with, but still a fun listen.
1st grade field trip to marbles
I enjoyed the music for the most part, but her voice isn’t for me.
Its good, surprisingly good. Life changing? No.
