Reviews (page 9 of 13)
kinda nice, definitely listenable for being pop music but it wasnt particularly special i saw a pic of her Solar Power album and I got distracted
Meh. Not my kind of music but it seems well produced.
Lorde's voice is unusual and it sounds like she has a cold, but it's not unpleasant and I quite liked the album.
It’s good just not my jam.
I feel like in the one listen I had it has something to offer but I just can't relate to it. I liked some songs on the first listen but it was more subdued than what I'd want to. And that's fine, but just not for me to listen in a full album.
it's fine. lorde is fine.
As someone who loves music of all kinds, I went into Melodrama by Lorde with a curious mind and no real expectations. After a few listens, I find myself stuck somewhere in the middle. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either. it’s one of those albums I appreciate more for what it’s trying to do than how much it resonates with me personally Lorde’s voice is undeniably unique, with a raw quality that cuts through the production and demands attention. Tracks like “Green Light” and “Perfect Places” stand out for their energy and clever songwriting. There’s a theatrical element to the whole album. fitting, given the title that captures the highs and lows of being young and figuring yourself out. The production is lush and detailed, with Jack Antonoff’s touch giving it an expansive yet intimate feel. I like how the album takes risks; it’s not afraid to be different or dramatic, which makes it stand out compared to other pop records That being said, some of the risks don’t entirely work for me. At times, the production feels overly cluttered, like it’s trying too hard to sound profound. A few songs, while emotional, border on feeling repetitive or drawn-out, which made it harder to stay engaged. While I respect the themes of heartbreak and self-discovery, I didn’t connect with the album as deeply as I hoped to. It’s as if I can admire it from a distance but not fully immerse myself in it. Overall, Melodrama feels like an ambitious, creative project that has its highlights but doesn’t quite land as a favorite for me. It’s solid enough that I wouldn’t skip it if it came on, but it’s not an album I’d reach for regularly. So yeah, I’m right in the middle on this one!
It was okay, a little forgettable?
I really like the production here, and it's enough to hold my interest decently well, but I just get bored with the lyrical material. Couple of good ones, but gets bland about halfway through. Favorite tracks - Green Light, Liability
Solid, emotional album. I had not listened to Lorde previously but will do so again.
I didn’t expect to be crying when listening to this, and I wasn’t. It was all a bit deflating though, cheer up Lorde, you’ve got loads of money. Not a bad album though, there were bits I sincerely enjoyed. Also, they do say that you can never trust a person whose eyes are too close together. I’ve never trusted anyone as much as I trust Lorde.
It was okay, but nothing really stood out for me lyrically and musically. I have one thing to say tho, the album is as melodramatic as the name suggests. I might give it another listen and change the rating still, but for now it's a 3. Fav tracks: Liability, Perfect Places
Lorde crosses the bridge from exploring different themes to making every song off the album about relationships. The result is a very generic modern pop album that sounds like everything else I've heard on modern pop radio, which is a step back from her previous work. I'll admit, I had hopes when 'Green Light' was the opening track, but 'Sober' and 'Homemade Dynamite' made me lose admiration real quickly. The second half exhibited some decent songwriting, but it suffered, as did the first half, from poor and generic producing. I swear I've heard that exact same pattern of electronic drum beats followed by no drums in everything else that's popular right now.
This has all the hallmarks of mid 10s pop production, trauma-core. An electropop pallette that's all about moody pulsating synth and a patina of nostalgia for a sound its audience originally knew as always already retro. Drawing on electronic dance music for the build/drop crowd moving effect but played too slow to dance to, instead the pacing makes room for big swells and leaves lots of room between the beats. Huge choruses - shouted rather than sung for pop buy-in - that feel a bit forced like they were written to be on at the emotional peak of a mediocre teen drama. An explosion of big fill-in-the-feeling feelings, fill-in-the meaning meanings. Dynamics that flip between bombastic beats and quite piano. Hushed breathy vocals that create a whispered intimacy, then they're doubled and tripled for a polyphonic effect for maximalist choruses. Subwoofer testing low end bass hits to connect the ethereal synths to your body and ground it. A detached disillusioned affect from hyper-mediation and lyrics that mix up deepening isolation and self care. This was one of the big albums that made this sound hegemonic, but it still ends up feeling a bit predictably samey and none of the songs really pops in the way Royals did.
I remember liking this much more when it came out than I did on re-listen here. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace for it. I would have given this a 4 on the memory of how much I enjoyed it; I'm giving it a 3 here. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Better than I was expecting
A pretty decent modern pop album me thinks. Nothing really bad about it
Maybe it's a question of generation, whether you like it or not. I think Lorde's voice is good, the arrangements are popular - nothing against pop - but boring. Perhaps I would find the music more interesting if I knew nothing else. But the thing is, I know other - and yes, older - music that is much more interesting, at least for me. Meanwhile, I find it almost amusing to mirror my perspective on that of my previous generations and see the same thing there that the young rangers probably see in me now. I hope for the sake of the now young Gen-Z, Alpha or whatever they want to call themselves, that they get to the age where they listen to the mockery of their successors and can no longer understand their enthusiasm for their music. I suspect Lorde will be gone by then, but the Beatles, the Stones etc. will still be influential. 3/5
Generalistic
It's so so obvious that this was produced by the same guy who produces Taylor Swift albums, not that its a bad thing. I really enjoyed this one but it didn't blow me away. A rock solid 3.
Very nice
Not bad. Liability is good 1001 album worthy: Yes - 16/30
♥️
Unexpectedly good
I'd heard all of these songs before because come on, it's Lorde. Never listened to the full album in one go though. Lorde always hits, of course, but not my everyday choice personally.
Not my cup of tea
She has a good voice and felt like the album was ok and better than I was anticipating.
I thought the 1st track was interesting-the vocals & piano were strong. unfortunately the next few tracks were a snooze. weak lyrics & way too much synthetic keyboard/drum tracks. all blended together. the few tracks which centered on her vocals (without distortion/autotune) & piano were interesting to listen to. otherwise it was another solid "meh"
Enjoyed it - a couple of bangers - and some interesting soundscapes. Vocally its a little bit effected and lyrically makes me feel old :-( Not enough cheese.
New Zealand's Taylor Swift? It's not bad, but it's feels done to death. So it's really downside is that because I feel like I've already listened to everything it looses my attention and gets a bit boring. The vocals are surprisingly good, but she still falls into that trend of making a baby-ish voice and that's a real shame cause it taints it.
Well made but didn't really grab me. 3.2
2-3
I didn't love this, but I liked it more than I expected It feels like it's got some big swings, even if they don't all connect. She's got an intriguing style that I'm sometimes in sync with, and sometimes it rubs me the wrong way.
A haunting album - beautiful in places, haunting in others. I enjoyed it. A very talented young lady who seems like she has come through many life experiences!
As far as a more modern pop star, Lorde has a good vibe. Sings about love and loss but doesn't get raunchy about it. I like when her accent comes through.
The blueprint for most modern Taylor Swift albums.
Very cute and relatable
Listen-to-able pop music. I’m not calling her a genius, but I enjoyed listening. More or less.
Ég heyrði einhvern tímann að Lorde væri ofboðslega sjálfselsk og teldi sig með bestu listamönnum í heiminum. Platan hennar var bara allt í lagi. Ég myndi alveg hlusta á hana aftur en ég myndi samt segja að sjálfskipaði besti listamaðurinn þurfi að gera betur til að sanna þá staðhæfingu.
Not bad, but I don't fuck with it too much.
Yeah alright
Some hits from back in my day, but overall pretty forgettable.
Very solid pop album…that being said it’s also a pop album and there is going to be a natural ceiling on an album like this. It’s not groundbreaking, it’s not innovative, it’s not trying to be, it would be counter productive if it were. For what it is, it’s very, very well made - it do be what it is though.
Enjoyed it.
Especially on many of the newer albums on this list, I have to remind myself to keep an open mind and to discard any preconceived notions. I mean, I only know one song from Lorde (which I like, but can't assume that speaks for all of her work), and it's not even on this album. The production is great. "Green Light" opens with bite, beginning with more common arrangement until expanding its sound in more modern directions by the second verse. It's a nice evolution in one song, and we stay with the modern, programmed approach onwards, though "The Louvre" does bring in some guitar work. Lorde's voice is able to stretch a bit. She's not at the Celine Dion diva level, but she works well with what she has. I feel many of these songs can be replaced with Taylor Swift, who has adopted a similar style in arrangement, production, songwriting, and even singing since leaving country music. She's gone, Country. I'm not sure what that says about Taylor Swift or Lorde, but it's interesting that such a similar approach results in one being a billionaire and the other . . . I'm not even sure what Lorde is doing. We put our feet back on the ground with "Liability," a slow piano ballad showcasing a more tender side and approach. My only complaint is the "In The Air Tonight" drum fill sample in what I assume is the Loveless section of "Hard Feelings/Loveless." In the original, it is a feature, weighted with the importance of finally kicking in the beat on a slow burning spacial song. For Lorde, it's just another cheap drum fill. Some things are sacred!!!! I can't get over the Taylor Swift comparisons. The occasional breathy-ness, squeakiness, distant reverb scream, pitch lift at the end of note . . . so many shared vocal techniques. This is good modern pop and well produced and performed, but it's not exactly innovative or ground breaking songwriting.
I've never heard anything from her except for Royals, but this one grew on me as I progressed through it. I was initially put off by her vocal style, which I'm not sure I can describe, but it's a certain type of singing that seems to have been trendy among her cohort for a while. And I was like, "Why does she have American YouTuber voice," or whatever we're going to call it, "she's Kiwi!" It struck me as self-conscious and trying to hard to fit an artsy, quirky aesthetic. But as the album went on, I was struck by the intelligence and maturity in the lyrics. I remembered that she was really young when she first got famous, so I looked up her age when this came out--still pretty young. Maybe there was real substance here after all. By the end of the album I found myself invested and enjoying it. I look forward to checking out her other stuff to see how she evolves. 3.5
I think everyone knows Lorde or at least the song Royals, which is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I wanted to do a punk cover of Royals with my last hand but we never got around to figuring it out. As for this album, I’m pleasantly surprised… it’s definitely not my usual style, but I’m a fam of her voice/vocal style. The accompaniment is sonically pleasing and I find it interesting enough that I’d circle back to it when I’m looking for background music.
Never listened to Lana after her first huge album. Really enjoyable, but I think I'm a little old for the target demographic, 3*
I was obssessed with Lorde's first album - Pure Heroine when it came out. In 2013 Lorde was the coolest, she had teenage girls on tumblr in a chokehold I'd never listened to this album based off the singles. I liked The Louvre, Perfect Places, and Green Light has since grown on me - but nothing else really stood out This album sounds like Forever 21 music - and we can blame producer Jack Antonoff for that I like the theory online that this album is about Lorde's relationship/cheating with Jack. The powerpoint presentation someone made about it will remain iconic Sadly it still doesn't make this album sound better though 3 ⭐️
It had a nice, consistent sound. But it’s not one I really enjoy that much
Nothing wrong with it, just a difficult album for me to listen to as it’s not my genre. no tune really grabbed me musically aside from liability which was a lovely song. Lyrically nice and angsty in places too. Can safely say I will never listen to this again and it can be filed alongside Taylor Swift in the “not me” category.
Fun but nothing I'd repeat.
Supercut is a fave
Great melodies and amazing vocal performances, a bit monotonous instrumentally as an album, but definitely great mood music for driving in to a city at night.
First impression - not a fan of the vocal affectations. There are instances when the "cursive" singing is less prominent, which are more enjoyable to my ears. The music and arrangements are often quite enjoyable. Writer in the Dark epitomises this, the contrast between the verse and chorus - the exaggerated vocal fry and "writer" being pronounced as "roiydah" in the verse and then the lovely Kate Bush-esque chorus.
I like the first album better than this one, but maybe that's because I'm more familiar with it. I like Lorde ok
3 out of 5. Pop doesn't normally do it for me but there are a few bangers on this one.
Gh
It’s fine
Enjoyed it. You can see it had an influence on a lot of what is being done now.
Not really what I usually listen to, but she does have a very compelling voice and vocal style. Kept me interested through most of the disk. A strong 3...
Moody party vibes. She makes the most of the studio. It’s a big, compelling sound, and when the beat drops out she’s there to greet you with her affected lower register. Good stuff. I won’t be putting it on, but am happy to have it find me organically.
Her voice, vocal style, and songwriting would be better suited to a less pop-focused sound, something more akin to Florence and the Machine. Another issue is that listening to this album seven years after its release, the music and production no longer feel fresh, having been repeated many times since. It's surprising how dated it already sounds. A 2.5 for me but I'll round up.
Middling angst edged relationship pop songs.
This was fine. Nothing special for me, nothing offensive. I do think this is like a lot of modern single artists, it's better in earbuds than it is on a stereo system, you almost need the close-ness of it, but that's not my preferred style.
I was only familiar with Lorde's singles so it was cool to listen to an album of hers. I like her voice and appreciated lyrics that weren't just bog standard love songs. However, I still don't really minimalistic music where there's nothing interesting happening in the background. 3.5 stars if I could.
At first I was mad at 1001 generator for picking another second third or fourth best record from an artist, but this record is actually pretty fucking good.
Wish I could love Lorde but just not for me.
Not my fave Lorde album but still a few goodies. Liability always makes me feel something, so much vulnerability in the lyrics man. And writer in the dark was pretty good too.
Selbstmitleid als Album
Newer and weirder but ok. Mostly.
R & B, dance, and hip-hop-flavored mild pop tunes, long on attitude, but not nearly as sophisticated as planned or hoped for. A pleasant listen, nonetheless, as the more bouncy tunes are particularly funky.
I didn't really get the reason for this album being on the list. It seems very generic and no better than many other similar modern female pop artists. I'm not a big fan of the genre but, to me at least, people like Taylor Swift, Marina, Janelle Monae, Charlie XCX etc are a significant step up from this. It's not bad, but it's not something I'd go out of my way to listen to again.
This is a beautifully sounding album. Would never normally turn on a "pop" album like this but it was a pleasant surprise. 6.5/10 (3.25/5)
hmm
“3.6 roentgen. Not great, not terrible.” Using this space for a Miseducation of Lauryn Hill review: Reviewing globally acclaimed albums is always hard. Everyone loves them and there is so much pressure to love it. This one was amazing, don’t get me wrong, but it is not perfect for me. Ex-factor and Doo Wop carry imo.
Modern pop that I don't completely disdain. Some nice melodies. Production bang up to date. Songwriting reminds me of Taylor Swift. I'm a 41 year old man, this is not aimed at me. I can appreciate it, but I can't love it.
Not too shabby. Loved green light but other songs were not that memorable
Eh. Fairly standard '10s pop music.
Quite pop but a new sound in these albums, so appreciated
I want to love this one, but I honestly just don't. I'm sorryyyyyyy. I love the cover art and think she has a beautiful voice, but there's just something missing for me. I'm still fairly new to getting into pop, and the things that appeal to me are generally more in the hyper pop or club direction.
I enjoyed listening, and would probably listen again when in the right mood. There were some definite good tracks, but nothing so great that I wanted to download.
Surprisingly good for a genre I don’t like
I just find modern pop so boring. This is definitely better than most. Very cool production. Virtually nothing interesting in the songwriting, unfortunately. Imagine if these were all simply voice and piano, would there be much of anything left? Interesting that there are a couple moments of voice and piano, which stand out to me as better moments of songwriting. But also, she was really young, so who knows what will happen in the future.
eh
she got that new sounding lispy way of singing, the hits are goo the rest are meh
Favourite song - Green light 2.5 stars
This is a tough call. Some of it is really good and has great music, but some of the lyrics are really cheesy. But hey, I'm a Cheetos fan.
It's an alright album, good songs. I wish it wasn't this minimalist shit though. I mean why can't you have more than two instruments at a time? why can't there be something out of pocket or new? I wouldn't want be in the studio for this, because it would be really boring. She doesn't allow herself to have any fun with it.
They say you have your whole life to create your first album and only four years to create your second album. I guess the expectations for Lorde were probably unreasonably high after the absolute smash hit that was "Royals," but c'mon. I think people were really interested to see what she would have to say as she gained experience of the world and to see if she would create Great Art. Spoiler alert: she made a fairly limp and unimpressive pop album.
I’m not much of a pop guy, I think Lorde is pretty good pop music. However, I prefer her debut, “Pure Heroine,” and also think it would be better for the list. It was a breakout hit that helped to redefine what was possible in pop music in the 2010s, coming off a decade-plus of Britney Spearses and Katy Perrys, of Max Martin-penned megahits that are major earworms but lack substance or variety. I’ll let entertainment journalists explain it better than I could: Lindsay Zoladz wrote that the album's "impact [was] larger and harder to define because it completely rewrote the rules for young women making radio-friendly pop." Similarly, The New Yorker's Carrie Battan argued that the "pop scene—particularly for women—has altered radically since Pure Heroine was released", making it "almost unrecognizable from the sugary-sweet, overtly sexual realm of the early aughts." “Melodrama” does get Jack Antonoff on the list, as it was one in a long line of pop hits he produced as the pop scene shifted to new sounds and new shapers of sound. But actually we already had an Antonoff-produced album, with Lana Del Rey’s “Chemtrails.” Still not the one I would pick. Instead I would add St. Vincent’s “Masseduction” to the 1001. St. Vincent’s Annie Clark has been one of the most influential musicians of the 2010s, with one genre-bending album after another. Including “Masseduction” would be a great way to start reversing the lack of modern music on the list.
Easy listening. 5/10
generic
Nothing spectacular - nothing awful. This is quirky pop music.
Liability👍🏻
3.4 - Very similar lyrics to taylor swift imo. Also weird obsession with teeth
Was very surprised I enjoyed this
There's very solid production, some good skill, and a strong level of intentionality to this. It's not an album that's speaking to me but for the right person at the right stage of life I could easily see this be foundational. Don't regret the listen, makes sense to be on the list.
Overall, it's not my cup of tea. Its a good album, and Lorde is a very talented singer, but I just really wasn't able to really vibe with this album.
Mid
I actually like Lorde reasonably well and I thought I might like this one more than I did. Pure Heroine was a massive hit (I imagine it might be on this list too) and I actually liked her 2021 release Solar Power (though it doesn't seem to have gotten as good reviews), but this one had fallen through the cracks for me. While I enjoyed it enough, it fell a little flat on the whole to me. As the name alludes to, it's moody and dramatic, so that's generally the vibe throughout ("bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark"). There's two great songs on here ("Green Light" and "Liability"). I think Lorde does a much better job than most of her 2010s pop peers at having interesting instrumentation and layered backgrounds. Even when a song is based around a pretty basic pop drum beat, she does a pretty good job of creating a more interesting sound. This has lots of distortions and things that I liked. I think she's at her best when she's centering a song around a strong piano sound and shows off both her pop vocals and her more slow-paced ballad-y abilities ("Green Light" does both, "Liability" more of the latter). She's also a pretty talented songwriter. It's not Dylan, and there are a few slightly cringey moments, but she does a pretty good job on the whole lyrically. "Liability" is a pretty crushing song honestly, it's to-the-point but well-written and very sad. Outside of the two great songs, I just struggled to get too into much else on here though. There's plenty of reasonably catchy songs, but little that I felt like really showcased her at her best. At worst, I think it fell a little into the hip-hop type beats that were bit around the time in pop music and don't really show off what she's best at ("Homemade Dynamite" for example). Overall, a solid modern album that probably deserves to be on the list, but falls into the "decent" category for me. Probably near a 3.5, but a round down. Favorite song: Green Light Other: The Louvre, Liability, Sober II (Melodrama), Writer In The Dark, Perfect Places 9/2/24
Electropop, but the opposite of vacuous.
A few catchy hooks. And a couple songs I really enjoyed. But doubt I ever front to back this album again.
It’s nice enough in the background, but since I’m not a young adult wading through that particular brand of angst, the words—which seem to be the main event—just slide past me.
Pop music from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, & 90s is easily identified by the decade of its origin...even if you never heard the song before. I find the 3 decades that follow to be much harder to distinguish. 00's? 10's? 20's? Is it because I got old? Is it because nothing sounds the same anymore because there is more variety? Is it because everything sounds the same now? Is it because of the way music can be recorded now? Is it because of the way that music is consumed?
It was nice but I don't know how it managed to qualify for the $1,001 albums list
Found myself tuning this out several times, but yet don’t feel like I missed out on much
This was better than what I was expecting, but nothing more than just good.
The music is fine. The vocals are fine. It's fine. That is all this is.
I promise Lorde, it'll get better. I have a hard time with the way she enunciates, its very formulaic of her contemporaries, but then mixes things up a little. The Louvre has so much going on in it but I probably enjoyed it most, the bridge especially. Cripes its just sadder Taylor Swift.
Not my type of music but interesting lyrics and vocal style
Pretty good album, but not as amazing as Pure Heroine.
There's some good lyrics and nice production at times, but the songs rarely feel more that solid.
Solid. I didn't love it, but that's the case for most pop albums. 3.3
bright, some catchy tunes with Green Light the standout
Fun fact I went to school with Ella
The drop off
Not my style, but very good production. Super heavy hitting lyrics and themes
While this is likely the musical equivalent of crack for a teen-twenty something, as a 30s man I didn't really connect with the lyrics on this album. The songs are catchy, well produced, and really compliment Lorde's unique voice and singing style. Very good but not for me.
143/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
Nice laid back atmosphere and soft vibes throughout the album, but also a bit boring
Very Lorde-like, not bad, would listen again.
I like her sound, but it feels kind of samey throughout the album.
I generally really liked it. Maybe a bit bloated and I don’t know how long I could’ve done that voice
Me duele ponerle 3, pero tíñeme unos peaks bien altos y caídas a canciones meh. Por eso lo doy un 3 bien alto.
i’ve had green light, the louvre and hard feelings/loveless in my playlists since probably two years ago but i’ve never actually listened to the album in full before! i’m excited because 2010s+ pop is def more in my comfort zone 🤭 first listen: okay homemade dynamite pop off!!! i like the vibe and the almost spacey synths (?). the piano in liability 🥹 was expecting it to crescendo into a climax but it’s still a nice song. the vocal layers in the chorus of writer in the dark pleasantly surprised me, the higher octave is so pretty! perfect places is a cute closer, the pop anthem style is def my taste and i like the synths before the outro overall the album is pretty cohesive and i can see the vision! unfortunately as of this moment, it’s not really hitting for me the way i thought it would 😭… though i see myself picking out specific tracks to listen to more so than replaying the entire album, i’m glad that it i at least got to listen to it once through.
I own this album. Decent album some good tunes.
Great voice. Some good lyrics very mellow vibes.
Not too bad, I liked a couple of songs but the rest was kinda boring
Pretty solid pop album. Very lyric heavy. Feel like I would have to listen multiple times to really get the full picture of what is being said. Best Song: Hard Feelings / Loveless
Not Pure Heroine but that was to be expected. Favourite track: Green Light.
Not the kind of relationships I would aspire to. Decent music though
Marketing
A modern breakup album produced by Jack Antonoff, there are certainly similarities to Swift but Lorde has more soul. Often that soul is covered by drum machines. He vocals and with the piano are her strengths. Melodrama is very good, close to elite 7.7/10
My first thought is why this album and not her debut? I'm not sure what happened elsewhere, but in my country her first album was a much bigger deal. So after listening through a couple of times, I'm still asking why this and not her debut. Don't get me wrong, this is a good album, but it sounds like it got churned out of the same factory as a lot of other pop stars. Her debut worked so well because it was different and stood out among the pack.
It was alright. It grew a bit samey as it went on, though.
Couple of good songs, 3/4* so far Supercut and green light are the ones
Not her best, but super fun.
Not a bad listen.
2024-06-21...
Middle of the road for me not bad at all but not something I’m going back to
Not bad but nothing special.
I didn't mind this.
I appreciate the craft. She is talented no doubt. But of a lull early on after green light. I thought I world probably not listen to this again but towards the end I may give it another chance.
My musical taste usually leans toward straight-up rock, but in instances where I've dug deeper into a modern pop artist's discography like Carly Rae Jepsen or Kelly Clarkson, there's so much more depth and genuine talent than what often gets played on the radio. For the reason, I was eager to hear a full album from Lorde. While this album doesn't floor me like the works of the singers I listed above, there was a lot about this record I liked. I did enjoy the more stripped-down tracks as opposed to the over-produced electro-pop tracks, but she really delivers on those tracks. The songs where it's just her and a piano remind me of a more recent favorite pop singer in Olivia Rodrigo, which is a compliment in my view. Overall, this wasn't a massive triumph of an album in my eyes, but by and large I prefer this record to the majority of what plays on pop radio in 2024. Notable Tracks: - Green Light - The Lourve - Liability - Writer In The Dark - way better on the album than in that cringy viral video where she hushes the crowd 5/10
Not bad at all! 5/10
Nice music and great voice. 1st time listening to Lorde - not my style but there is some great work here
6/10 When we first hired you, Lorde, we expected big things from you. I can't help but notice your beginning to lose the edge we were used to seeing in the beginning. We'd like to know what we can do better to help you shine again. 6-10-2024
Solid
Better than I expected, but didn’t speak to me.
i'll be real i think the only song i've heard from her is royals. and team. this was an interesting little dive into her discography, i'll say that much. lots of songs are melancholy, plenty of material about relationships that could've gone better. it's a very... sleepy album. it's eh.
B- Green Light 3 Sober 3 Homemade Dynamite 4 The Louvre 3 Liability 4 Hard Feelings/ Loveless 3 Sober II (Melodrama) 3 Writer In The Dark 3 Supercut 3 Liability (Reprise) 3 Perfect Places 3 Sandeep is a simp y'all!
Really pleasantly surprised to see such a recent album here. This may be the most event album I’ve had so far. Like most people, I know Lorde mostly for “Royals.” That song is not on this album, so I was really going in blind. I thought this was a really well written, expertly produced album. Very dramatic, seemingly very personal. It had all the expected elements of pop today without going over the top or feeling like a blatant cash grab (except maybe “Homemade Dynamite”…). Overall I enjoyed this, even if I found some of it hard to relate to. Lorde is clearly an artist with a vision and a distinct sound, but it just isn’t my thing. 3 stars. Standout tracks: Green Light, Sober, The Louvre, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Perfect Places
Don’t know this one. More modern. She sounds / sings young Upbeat first song. Good stuff. Nothing blowing my mind Some nice songs in here. I have no idea why this is on the list. 3 stars
Some of the songs are pretty good, but they'll never be Royals.
It’s important to know that Lorde’s favourite Kiwi musician is Paul Williams
I like Lorde, in my view a songwriter of not inconsiderable talent. Her insights often belie her lack of years, although not all the songs here succeed. Nevertheless, when they are good, they are very good indeed. Saw her perform a couple of years back: felt as foreign as a frankfurter among her more "typical" demographic.
Pleasant enough
Mmmm ok
One of the better mainstream pop albums of the last ~10 years. It's cool that a one hit wonder, almost industry plant-type musician from New Zealand managed to build upon an initial hype and have an interesting career. And all based on her own songwriting, lyrical and vocal skills, with help from Antonoff. The result - a highly enjoyable album and (as of 2024) easily her peak work. Not many mainstream albums are this consistent, unique and forward-thinking. Fun story. After Lorde was picked to perform Life on Mars for a David Bowie tribute album in 2017, Bowie's longtime pianist Mike Garson said: "David really liked Lorde, and he felt like she was the future of music, and they had a few wonderful moments together." Bowie was so God damn cool.
Intéressant
I enjoyed it.
Kate Bush-lite. The lyrics are nonsensical and instrumentally it's pretty generic but that voice is pure sex.
FAVO: Green Light, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Writer in the dark, Supercut, Perfect Places
Unique voice Enjoyed the album! 3.5/5
Actuallly enjoyed this - didn’t grip me by any means but enjoyable listen
I love her lyrics but it's not my genre really
Not bad, might listen to more.
Solid pop album.
I went into this with the expectation of loving it based on how much influence she had during the 2012-2014 triple j days but it mostly reinforced my disinterest in anything atmospheric. It all sounds real messy. She's at her best on tracks like Liability where it's just her and a piano. Strip back the bullshit and let that voice shine. Her phrasing is wild on that track too. Realise now that this is from 2017, maybe Royals is better suited for this list.
I remember Todd In The Shadows's best list for 2017 was the first time I didn't recognize a single song he included, nor did I feel particularly inspired to listen to any of them. That was up to and including the song he picked for the top spot: "Green Light" by Lorde. Finally listenjng to it, and the album, seven years later... Man, I'm just reminded of how much I don't really care for modern, current popular releases. Like, sure, I can't hear anything I dislike about it, and I can probably point out a few specific moments I like, but in general nothing really speaks to or clicks with me, y'know? Even "Green Light". I mean, the only 2017 album I listened to in 2017 was HUMANZ by Gorillaz. **That's** what I'm into. This... Eh. Not as much, sadly.
Eh
Ned mis Bizli too much teeny drama Sie het mega gueti tüfi, hans aber ned so gern wenn sie höch singt Wenns mehrstimmig isch tönts immer glich Isch ok I guess
I'm familiar with the singles off this album but have never listened to it straight through. This is decent 2010s pop, apparently telling the story of a breakup set at a house party. While I do have other pop artists that I prefer, I do appreciate and give props to albums that have that sort of narrative structure/tie-in throughout. Definitely better than a lot of stuff on this list. 3/5
I don’t know why this doesn’t hit as hard as other recent singers. On paper this should be great, but it just doesn’t have that oomph.
Aptly titled - a little too much of the Billie Eilish whiny schoolgirl vibe on this one for me. I listened to her two other albums in conjunction with this, and this was my least favorite.
Enjoyed a few songs on this and it took me by surprise to be honest. I quite enjoyed the synth wave undertones on some of the tracks.
Enjoyable enough to listen to but it just didn't grab me or inspire me to give it another listen. 2.5 stars
Good Album. Some interesting songs. Some blah songs.
Zoals in 'Hard Feelings/Loveless'. 7,5/10 Highlights: Homemade Dynamite Writer In The Dark Supercut
Writer in the Dark doet me denken aan London Grammar. 7,5/10 Highlights Green Light Liability Sober II
Better than i expected. Still a teenager singing about teen shit, but i prefer olivia rodrigos take. Sometimes clever and catchy though. I guess on the list cause of antonoffs production taking over the world, impression i had without looking into it was sophomore slump. Antonoff was better when he was fun. Aim and ignite era. Puns son!
Not bad, not my favorite. I am Lorde. Yah yah yah.
Couple of lovely songs but all blur into one really
I have not heard this entire album before, it's pretty good. I would listen again.
Royals was a song that grabbed my attention. This is all fine work but none of it does what Royals did and so here I am.
Generic, female led, power pop. Acceptable for what it is I suppose, but it defo don’t warrant further listening.
she has a unique voice, cool sounds and transitions but could not get into it :/ I can imagine the hype around her, just doesn’t resonate with me.
Enjoyed this more than I expected, don’t think I’ll return
Not really my thing, but it is solid if you like millennial pop songs. Kinda hate that weird but common affectation she has on a few words where she sticks an "i" sound in the middle of a word for no reason. 3.5 stars
nice electro-pop but not really my thing
“Green Light” is a good opener, with a mix of intensity, bright chords, and increasingly insistent groove. There’s nothing on the level of “Royals” or “Team” here. 3 albums in the decade since Lorde’s career started show her still finding way after a lot of excited ingénue talk. It must be hard to become famous that young. Sophomore albums are also notoriously difficult, being judged by the promise of a popular debut. Perhaps time will be kinder, but as it stands, this record doesn’t display the work of a promising young artist.
Strong voice with a wide range, first few songs were very good. The layering/harmonising(?) gets abit repetitive throughout.
Most of the songs sound the same but they all sound good
Solid album. Good lyrical writing. Could use some song intros to create some distinction.
Its a Fine album just not my style
It’s no Royals, but I enjoyed this album when it came out and several songs made it onto my playlists. 3.5
not gonna lie the lines: “But we're the greatest They'll hang us in the Louvre Down the back, but who cares—still the Louvre” almost made me hit a 4 for this could i write poetry to this? n
Probably would have been a 5 immediately after the first time I heard it. For some reason this album lost its luster really quick. I think that's sort of a Antinoff specialty. Hits you with (Melo) dramatic sounds that don't hold up after closer inspection. Still good songs, but something just ain't right.
Good voice
Standard female indie pop stuff. Liability is the standout song, and makes you wish for a more piano rock kind of album.
I have one of her songs. That's it.
Green Light - i haven’t really listened to Lorde before, so far it reminds me of k flay but more pop? not bad just not my personal taste! Sober - i liked it more than green light but i still don’t have much to say. not upset that i’m listening to it but i probably wouldn’t put it on Homemade Dynamite - immediately liking this one more than the others. funny that it’s about partying but if you didn’t listen to the lyrics i wouldn’t guess that at all. this is giving pop radio hit to me! The Louvre - really is reminding me of K Flay, who my sister is a big fan of so i should recommend this album to her. i like the lyrics of this one! Liability - okay wait this is making me want to cry and it’s 10am… fav so far! Hard Feelings/Loveless - okay so there are some great breakup songs on this album and i can appreciate that!! oh so. there’s just a different song that is part of this song halfway through. this beat kinda makes me want to sway my hips. work Lorde! Sober II (Melodrama) - it’s a song! Writer In The Dark - i like her heartbreak songs i guess, she does them well! good one Supercut - i like this one too! ahhh!!! she does angsty love song so well!! also one of my favs i think Liability (Reprise) - okay now she’s just having fun w it. i do feel like i have more respect for her as an artist after listening to this album, i think she has a creative vision and clearly is an artist with shit to say! Perfect Places - ya i’m just not a partier so her party songs aren’t my fav i guess honestly probably a 3/5 for me, i liked some of these but a lot of them i didn’t like. if i heard this is 2013 i think it would’ve shaken me to my core but not in 2024
Not my thing. The kind of music that’s Popular with idiots who think they ‘love’ music and ‘hate’ commercial pop but only listen to radio 1 breakfast shows. It’s basically commercial pop from a different era 2.5
Fine
Not all bad. I listened to it all and I like some songs.
It’s very slick, at least at first listen….but that seems to strip the emotion out of it….very very cool, but is there any meaning?
I liked this album it was very well recorded and the songs were pretty good. The style suits my tastes which is not often the case with new female artist. Billie Eilish is another with a similar feelthat I enjoy very much. I do wish the production was a little more organic, but still enjoyed the album. 3 stars
was apprehensive on this as there were more "reacts to" than actual songs. However it's some nice pop with an indie/ singer/songwriter slant. Doesn't hugely blow me away but enjoyed it 3.3
eh, not my thing. only appreciate lorde when its Randy Marsh. I am a Royalist.
Being a kiwi, I feel pressured to rate this high. It isn't a bad pop album by any means, but it is still a pop album, and I find it hard to rate it highly because of that fact. It has some good songs, but it still comes off as trying to appeal to the mass market.
Nothing special, but a nice sounding alt rock album for background listening.
We all deserve the kind of passionate love that involves the cops.
Good album. Don’t see myself coming back to it often, although it may grow on me.
Vocalization takes some getting used to. Good production and good songs.
There's nothing wrong with this, but I don't feel I'm ever likely to listen to it again. It was ... OK.
I remember having high hopes for this one after Pure Heroine and being a bit disappointed. Where PH is spare, this album is a bit overdone to the point of sounding the same. This extra listen has helped it in my esteem and Green Light is such a great opener. I wish there was a 3.5.
I admit that I didn't even know what kind of music to expect from Lorde. I really liked the first track, Green Light. I found the next few songs to run together a bit for me, but I enjoyed The Louvre. I also liked Liability (which had some nice piano) and its reprise later in the album. I wasn't a fan of the distorted synthesizer in Hard Feelings / Loveless. Sober II and Supercut were OK. Overall, I see the appeal of Lorde's music - I won't avoid it, but I won't seek it out.
I started out feeling like this was a 4 but it fell off pretty hard in the back half. Stopped being bangers and started being a little dull.
Pretty, pretty, pretty good
Nothing special, nothing offensive. Maybe a bit mundane but doesn hurt my ears. It's a cut above generic female pop, so there's that at least.
finally listened to it. better cover
Good album. Just not for me.
This is not exactly my listening sweet spot, but I found the album intriguing and will take a closer look at Lorde's catalog.
Decent, some good songs
There is something appealing about Lorde's music that I've never been able to put my finger on. Maybe it's her vocal style, or just that the music feels a little unorthodox for a pop star. I really only knew her debut album 'Pure Heroine' before. Unfortunately, 'Melodrama' doesn't appeal to me as much. There are some stand out tracks like 'Green Light', but it's lacking the eerie minimalism of her debut and has fewer tracks that stick with me. I still like it, but it's a shame that 'Pure Heroine' didn't make the cut for this list. It might have been a 5 for me.
Would give this a 3.5, really enjoy Lorde's sound and she definitely hit her peak on this one.
“The Louvre” is a fantastic song. Super cut and liability really grab me.
3.5/5
Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: Probably not
Like it more than Lana Del Rey but not by much. 2.5 stars.
Hobbiton, Cricket, and Randy Marsh are treasures of New Zealand I'm not really on board though, but I do find it intriguing. It's weird too, because I can't determine if what I do enjoy about this album is really Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor or just Jack Antonoff. But as the kids would say, this has a few bops on it.
Too pop-y
It has some great production, the lyrics are pretty cool and the singing is pretty great, but it's not for me 2.5
Melodrama is really accurate
Chill vibes. But nothing made me feel any emotions.
Great production. Too pop for me.
ethereal. hypnotic. well crafted electropop. and she wrote/cowrote all of the songs, which isn’t very common in modern day pop music. interesting voice. pretty good album. highlights: “liability”, “writer in the dark”, “perfect places”.
Meh. Good music, but didn't jump out.
I didn’t dislike this but it’s not really my thing, either.
Meh
Good Album like her sound. Green Light is a bop
Just not my music. She does have a great voice
Unquie voice and interesting lyrics.
Mellow and moody, good listen on a rainy day.

I used to be a music director at a college and remember receiving Lorde's "Love Club" EP and thinking it was not my thing but saw an appeal for the indie/pop cross over style and catchy songs. I never listened to this really but it's a solid pop record. I guess since I ignored it on initial release I didn't realize how much the current pop style feels like this. I don't know if it was capitalizing on those trends or creating them. The actual songs are nice enough. Feels like a bit Kate Bush, a bit Swift, but overall cool.
Good. I’m guessing she influenced Olivia Rodrigo. I really liked her first album.
Overly passionately-sung, breathy vocals, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the album at times, some heartfelt lyrics and great instrumentation.
Slaps but not my cup of tea.
Enjoyable.
Though this isn’t what I would typically listen to, I enjoyed this album. I wouldn’t say it’s worthy of too much praise because, after all, most of the songs sound like you could’ve thrown Taylor Swift or Lana Del Rey on it and it would’ve sounded just as good, but it’s certainly inoffensive. I didn’t feel like it took effort to listen to like some of the 1001 albums ie The war on drugs. There are some solid pop beats and catchy vocal rhythms to keep this from being as bland and soulless as radio pop has the tendency of being. 5/10 Best Track: Sober II (Melodrama)
Great pop album, nice songs besides the hits, must listen again
I enjoyed the production and most of the melodies but I'm not a huge fan of how she sings. Despite it only being prominent during the verses, I found it to be generally annoying after a while.
It was pretty good, but not for me. The production was fantastic and is objectively well put together, but I just didn’t really enjoy it that much.
Neither good or bad, just mediocre, nothing too special
Very mediocre record, even if you can see what she's trying for. Producer's impact: more creative effort spent in the pre-choruses than the verses, across the album. Overall impression - music for people to sing along with who aren't confident singers. Much of the album sounds like you're hearing a neighbor play it through the wall. "Green Light" - sophomoric lyrics over a driving track that hints at freedom "Sober" - intriguing lyrics, but the soft parts of the soft-loud-soft pattern are boring and predictable across her albums "Homemade dynamite" - low effort lyrics, "dance" beat that doesn't ever open up. Breathy vocals and soft peaks like kids who want to dance in the basement but Dad won't let them turn up the stereo. This is supposed to depict the excitement of a new crush? "The Louvre" a not very exciting track about the excitement of an early relationship. A dance track that has as much dance energy as a La Croix has fruit juice. "Liability" - downtempo piano ballad but the vocal cadences are identical to her upbeat stuff. How are we supposed to feel any different invested emotion? Heartfelt and well-written lyrics. Sub-3-minute interval, needs more time to develop and occupy some space between faster tempo songs. "Hard Feelings/Loveless" Hard Feeling section is only vaguely interesting musically while the lyrics are HS diary poetry. Loveless section seems a callback to earlier Lorde pirated Fruity Loops beats, which is a nice way to paint what seems to be callback story time. Otherwise a section devoid of impact, either musical or emotional. "Sober II (Melodrama)" whatever emotional/story impact the lyrics deserve are completely lost by a generic low-everything instrumental track. Considering it's the title track, as it were, that's unfortunate. "Writer in the Dark" - A far more effective piano ballad - she actually belts out some parts. It's not all speak-singing. "Supercut" Upbeat but still feeling held-back. Good lyrics. Shouldn't have had to wait this long into the album for all the cylinders to fire. "Liability (Reprise)" mournful lyrics with appropriately mournful accompaniment. Should have been the final track on the album, esp as a reprise. Or merge the two "Liability" tracks, which addresses the shortcomings of the first one. "Perfect Places" Good track, shame it's at the end. Compelling instrumental, insightful lyrics.
Very upbeat and fun album with great beats and vocals...and some less upbeat and melodrama songs. Green Light is a real cool tune. 3
Shocked with how many of the songs I recognized. Suppose I shouldn't since I live in NZ
I liked it more than I thought
It's fine
Some really good chord progressions and vocals on this album. "Liability" is particularly nice. Maybe you should give this album a second chance before you toss it in the electro-pop trash bin.
A while back I had a revelation about Lorde and this album in particular. The songs are at their best when they’re played in the background and you don’t pay too close attention to the lyrics. I’m sure Lorde wouldn’t want to hear that because she clearly labors over every word and carefully delivers every line. But man, she writes some silly lyrics. And her performance is unintentionally funny on a bunch of these songs. Like when she whispers on “Sober”: “I know this story by heart / Jack and Jill get fucked up and possessive when it gets dark” 😂 Like, even aside from the dramatic way she delivers this dumb line, aren’t Jack and Jill brother and sister? Why would you use them as a metaphor for a romantic relationship? But every time I laugh at a line, the next moment I get drawn back in by the melody. Lorde is similar to Taylor Swift in that way. Both are very talented at coming up with hooks that get stuck in your head and melodies you remember for years. But they’re not always great at attaching words to those melodies. I can’t tell if they overthink their lyrics or don’t put enough time into them. Maybe I’m pointing my finger at the wrong person though. Jack Antonoff is credited as a songwriter and lyricist on a lot of these songs and he writes with Taylor Swift too. He’s probably responsible for a lot of these dud lines. But his production on this album is a highlight. There are bright colors and interesting sounds on just about every song. I love that bouncing piano that comes in and out of “Green Light.” And how it builds and crashes into the chorus! Hard not to get caught up in that. Great album cover too.
Easy to listen but kind of generic radio Pop
A little melancholy for my tastes. She has a beautiful and unique voice and I don’t hate it. It’s just not to my taste. I would rate 2.5, so rounding up to 3
Yep, not bad
I thought it was relatively okay but i was not a fan
I normally do not listen to much radio pop (except for my girl tswift ofc) but I love this album and it has been my go-to gym album for years. green light gets me pumped the fuck up! i don’t care for lorde’s other albums but this one slaps.
Standout Pop to me. Uses familiar sounds that are in pop songs, but in ways that make it much more different. Works well for me, and makes for a good pop album.
Soft voiced singer, still strong! Some songs a little to alternative for my liking. The album cover is gorgeous.
Really good pop. Great unique production.
Better than I thought it would be going in as I had only heard a few Lore songs prior to this album. Almost every song bar "Liability" was laden with heavy beats and not quite mumbley vocals, and only a handful stood out to me like the aforementioned "Liability" and it's reprise, "Supercut", and "The Louvre" but nothing felt like it overstayed its welcome.
The most contemporary one from the one's we've seen so far and it's a nice genre refreshment after all the rock lately. It's not bad, but the problem is that it just sounds like I've heard it thousand times before. It's the kind of modern formulaic big producer type of sound, therefore it just feels a bit dry and it lacks that spark for me. Feels like I'd hear these songs in Zara. Lorde is certainly a talented singer and good song writer, but from what I heard this specific album from her just doesn't hit very much. I'll give it another chance in the future, but I don't have high hopes. On the other hand some songs aren't bad. Hard Feelings/Loveless has some nice qualities. I like the industrial metalic scraping sounds in the middle of the song. Also Kudos for the album cover though. Very visually pleasing with the painted style and vibrant colors. 🤗 Would look nice in my liked songs if I actually liked it... 6/10
Ha! I already listened to this album out of my own will like two weeks ago, when I saw it was on this list. But that doesn't mean I remembered much, sooo... Wait a sec. I didn't really remember much from it even the second time round. It's not really "my" genre. But i do appreciate her.
Rating: 3,25/5
not bad but not a 1000 greatest album of all time...
Album was okay. I liked her first one better.
# 122 : Good album. A couple of hits, a couple of fillers. Not too bad and she has a lovely voice. Favourite track : Supercut Listened : 01/12/2023
Good but nothing really stood out to me. Consistent from start to finish. Very emotionally laden. Fans of Taylor Swift would like for sure. 3/5 on the 1001 album scale.
3.5
I've heard quite a lot of praise for Lorde (pun not intended), but I'm not sure I quite get it myself. I think it sounds a bit too over the place for me. Too modern perhaps? Though writing that down makes me feel super old. Don't see what separates this from other modern pop. Not great, not terrible either.
I remember listening a lot to "Pure Heroine" when it came out but I haven't listened to this album as much. I did enjoyed this though, the hits are great. "Supercut" and specifically "Green Light" are really good songs. Maybe it is that this sound has been done to death these days (Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish to name a few) that makes me feel like I'm really tired of it. This is not really fair on this album as this was ahead of the curve and a sound many copied. The tiredness makes it difficult to appreciate the songs I haven't heard before though. I feel like a few years prior or in a few years i could come back to this and appreciate it more. For now it gets a strong 3.
Intricate, unique pop-instrumentation with immaculate production combined with beautiful, evocative vocals create a powerful, if slightly too-individualistic (at least for my taste) listening experience. Some of the lyrics are simply outside the scope of my current life, so they feel a bit obscure: probably I'm just too old and too uncool. (I guess I wish that young people were more interested in the meaning of life rather than their own identities. Maybe they would get more out of life and feel less like the Loveless generation. Then again, they're searching for meaning through their identities, so I guess it's similar. What do I know?) Lorde's voice is powerful and full of emotion. Lots of singing about dancing and partying, which doesn't do it for me. I can certainly see why she is so popular. A gifted, talented young woman. If there were 1/2 stars, I'd give it 3.5, but it feels closer to a 3.
Jack Antonoff can manage to get some really great songs out of the artists he works with, but MAN can you hear his production from 1,000 miles away. 3.5/5
Pure Heroine is better. Melodrama is both more mature and more generic than her first album, which had a unique sound and portrayed the isolation of growing up raised by the internet but also the uncertainty of a foreseen thrust into fame. Liability and Writer In the Dark are my favorites here, full of emotion and vulnerability. Homemade Dynamite is fun. Many of the other tracks have this conventional pop sound and structure, although Lorde’s distinct voice sets them apart. Hate Perfect Places. Some of the lyrics and phrasings are odd in a way I don’t like, or they feel too contrived instead of falling naturally into the song.
Gentle unconventional vocal and subtle pop songs. Pleasant if not world shattering.
This album is great. Lorde is great. She’s always had a very unique approach to her music and this album definitely exemplifies that. I think this album falls really well between her first album and her latest release. She’s grown more as an artist in this album the tracks tended to be a little bit more direct and composed.
Relaxing and nice sounding, nothing to write home about in my opinion
Fine but i’m unsure why it’s on this list. Most of the songs just feel like generic sadpop.
Perfectly fine
It's hyper polished pop, and pop's not my bag. 😒 Initially it was tolerable enough, but by the end of the album it was starting to wear me down. Thank heavens for the near-impenetrable media bubble I live in these days, because I think if I was forced to listen to some of these singles a couple of times per day I would grow to hate them with a fierce passion by the end of the first week. Fave track - eh, "Green Light" let's say.
I’m not really sure this was melodrama. Nothing seemed over the top. I really enjoyed the experience, it was like swimming in warm water. I love her voice and the whole ambience. The tragedy is that a few hours later, I cannot remember if there was one hook or catch. I don’t remember if there was any chorus. I can’t actually remember one song landing. There is no evidence of impact. Certainly not as much as Royal. So, much as I enjoy a dip in thermal springs, I can barely remember where these ones were. I wouldn’t object to having another listen though, some other time.
Her voice/singing style is reminiscent of Bjork at times. This album was fun to listen to. I liked it a lot more than SZA but I’ll rank it the same because, while SZA got the 3 for being a little better than a 2, Lorde will get it for being not quite a 4.
