Melodrama

Very standard stuff, I didn't like the production at all, it was over the top and more often than not didn't accompany the music and its direction in terms of overall feel. The lyrics were often corny as hell too, take "the louvre"(production wise a mess too). Overall glad the album was done, the only good thing was the powerful intro, which was ultimately followed by a landslide of sloppy work. Favorite track: Green light. Overall score: 1.8/10

23/1001 Jesus this record was bad. Like really boring and basic pop music bad. Wanted to stop listening after only a few songs but I persevered, sadly it didn’t get any better. 1,5/5

I can't stand this brand of singing, it's hard to articulate it. But it's a highly affected, distorting of most vowels. Ellie Goulding is a bastard for it too. It's known as IGV (indie girl voice) or Indigo voice. Green Light is full of it, and full of rubbish lyrics too, “but they bite-chu” lol. The beat in Sober reminded me of that Gotye hit, what a geometric headache that song and video was. Liability is just My Chemical Romance’s ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’, which of course is also derivative of many other songs, but this feels like blatant lift and shift in style and arrangement. She of course went on to rip off George Michael, Primal Scream and various others for that Solar Power single. Supercut made me want to smoke. I think it conjured memories of both Richmond Super Kings and Silk Cut. I'd gladly eat a sleeve of two hundred cigarettes than listen to another Lorde album. I can't believe the audacity of having callbacks to earlier songs and a reprise! As though this is an album with any artistic merit whatsoever. The album is a pile of piddle laced with forgettable songs, phoned in production, and totally benign songwriting. I seriously hate churned out, manufactured toss like this. It's completely devoid of personality.

She seems to be both very melancholy and very sleepy. She just woke up and has been informed her boyfriend left her and she needs to sing the song about it before mark antonoff will let her get out of the bed. He’s hitting a few basic progressions on a keyboard by the bed and just telling her to sing her thoughts as they occur - we have to finish this album by 930 at the latest so I can get to Miley Cyrus house.

I guess she’s got a decent singing voice. But the slow, quiet and breathless songs just don’t do it for me. Add the cursing and general simpering about their broken relationships, and it’s a pretty good snapshot of today’s anxiety-riddled woke white females. Lorde leads the way. It’s a yuck. I much prefer the Madonnas and Britneys and Taylors.

This Lorde album feels more inconsistent than her previous effort PURE HEROINE. Album felt algorithmic. I'm also not a fan of her singing style. None of the tracks stood out to me as bangers that had instrumental and vocal ideas that really captured my attention. While critics lauded her for more mature songwriting subjects on this album, I felt the subject matter on this album actually felt a bit more, please forgive me, sophomoric. On PURE HEROINE she explores her own views on class, wealth, and gender, and on this she explores breakups, hookups, and crying in her taxi. Most of it didn't quite evoke anything for me. I did enjoy the "Hard Feelings" half of "Hard Feelings/Loveless" when it felt like not only the lyrics came together but the sonic ideas got some bold risks, but then it was gutted when the conventional arrangement of "Loveless" began.

Lorde has a very unique voice in the world of pop. She is super interesting compared to other pop artists that I have grown to dislike. That being said, pop just isn't for me. It is the epitome of why I dislike modern popular music

Of all the pop albums to be released in the last ten years, this one makes the list??? The lyrics of the first are atrocious and the rest of the album gets a tiny bit better from there. Classic record label songwriting at its best right here.

This album is painfully bland, and incredibly uninteresting. I hate to say it, but it's just lame, pathetic almost. I know from her other work that Lorde can make good music, but this just isn't. It doesn't feel in any way engaging or novel. Perfect Places was okay, but not nearly good enough to make up for the incredibly milquetoast work of mediocrity that made up the rest of the album.

This is #day15 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... another plastic poo-poo pop. Has the world gone flat? What's wrong with the list at this point? Or, is it just me? This is easily a 1 out of 5. I guess I'll go and listen to "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus. Unlike shit that I just syringed into my ears, that song makes me feel. Looking forward to #day16.

Meh. Not much there to hook me. There is a bit of a sameness floating here. The production is mostly irritating in that I hear that kind of sound blaring out of car windows on a regular Thursday evening in my neighbourhood. If I already feel forced to listen to it when I take a stroll in the city, I definitely do not need to listen to it more before I die. Thanks, but no thanks.

I never feel older than when I listen to modern pop music. I just don't get it. Lorde's lazy whisper-talk-singing style annoys the ever-loving bejeezus out of me. WHY CAN'T YOU PRONOUNCE YOUR 'R's???! What is "Widah in da dawk?" Why does everything have to be overly dramatic? (Yeah, I know what the title of the album is.) I'm also not a big fan of profanity in pop songs. Again, I'm probably showing my age here. One of my personal rules is if I yell "Shut up!" multiple times while listening to an album, it's getting a 1/5. I call it the Radiohead rule. It applies here. So, is there anything good here? The album artwork is nice. Favorite track: Supercut?

It always seems to me that music from this time period (late teens, early 20s) has this very particular sound that I really dislike. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels like it's trying to hard maybe? Anyway, didn't like this one. it was bland and generic to me.

When this came up I immediately thought of that video of her shushing the crowd!! This album’s fucking dreadful. Sounds like someone who got famous through TikTok and made a record with their parents money.

Wasn’t for me. Listened to the first two tracks, but sounded like an awful attempt at Lana Del Ray.

Ok. This album was the first bad one I have gotten. I can understand maybe why it’s here- to show lordes struggle with addiction, but none of the songs were anywhere near “great”. Album was boring, whiney and repetitive.

my first experience with lorde is when tilly told me that lorde is her favourite artist, and that she is really good. i listened to lorde and did not like her +my first reaction to the 1st song was to start tearing up because i couldn't believe i was listening to lorde unironically +definitely a RADIO ARTIST -- she is not someone i would listen to elsewhere +not a fan of techno pop +so many sounds, yet so BORING +listening to this feels like a joke i can't believe i sat through this album. so boring. all the same. the songs weren't even good. 2.5/10

Right so I’m going to start this review by saying I’ve been for a Christmas night out with friends today so have a few cocktails in me. Therefore, my review might be a bit more stupid than usual. So about Lorde. I really liked Royals when then came out. I even made a cover of that song in my spare time. I thought her other songs were naff though. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Green Light This feels like a prime example of a great voice not being enough to make great music. There’s so much more needed, and yet there wasn’t much else to be found here. It wasn’t awful, but it certainly was quite boring. Halfway through the album, I was already waiting for it to finish. After writing that out, I guess it does actually mean the album was quite awful after all. If an album makes you bored, that ain’t too great is it? Bye then.

Until this album I never really gave Lorde the time of day if I'm being honest, and after digging into this thing yeah idk.. it had some songs that I did enjoy (mainly just 'The Louvre' if I'm being honest) other than that, maybe I would of enjoyed this album more when I was like 13 and young but.. just not my thing. I'm more of a fan of Ethel Cain or Cryomancer when it comes to new aged female singers, this is a bit too.. idk. Not really my style. Again, I did enjoy 'The Louvre' but other than that.. I wasn't really a fan of this album. Overall: 1.3/5

Can't get past the vocal style, not for me at all.

I was sadly disappointed with this. I only knew her for the Royal song, and was looking forward to more in that vein, with strong vocals and feel... but it all just had a generic pop middle-of-the-road radio station feel about it. Such a shame

Including this album but not Pure Heroine is pure insanity. That album was amazing, and beyond that it was SUPER influential. By comparison, Melodrama is just a generic pop album. It's fine, but not anything noteworthy.

I don’t think I noticed the change from one song to another. Actually I didn’t notice when the album ended and another started playing.

This was very, very bland for me, and I didn’t take to what she was trying to do with her voice. There was one song that made me think she was trying to be the granddaughter of Tori Amos. Disappointing, really.

I have enjoyed Lorde songs in the past (Royals) so was expecting more from this. It sounds like generic modern electronic pop with a slightly quirky voice. Bland, shiny production and lyrics that really don't speak to me. The sound is monotonous in both the backing and Lorde's voice - there's some variation in mood and tone in Hard Feelings, but the voice doesn't really change. Not sure I am the target audience for this album, to be fair.

Cool album cover, fits her sexy voice. I love her raspy voice. Almost like a young Amy Winehouse. But like her later stuff more. But gotta start somewhere and she did a lot of growing till current hits

Had to turn it off after a few songs. Did not like the voice, and found the music boring if not irritating. Not for me.

I found the vocals extremely annoying and lyrics read like they’re written by a 12yo filling in her diary. This is not a classic album in any sense of the standard prerequisites. 1 Star!
