3.75 Enjoyable.

This is a damn solid pop record. Although, I don't think it offers anything groundbreaking as others might suggest.

3.5 It was definitely more up my alley but also didn’t necessarily grab me.

First, the flaws: - Lorde has this odd singing accent that sounds very... lazy? It's hard to articulate (ha-ha), but whatever's going on, it's distracting me. Reminds me of pretty much every girl during music class at my high school. - The sound is really artificial – but honestly, I didn't mind too much. Production-wise, this worked in its favour (see below); normally, such a lack of acoustic sound would be a bigger problem to me. Now, the neutrals: - Sounds a lot like Lana Del Rey. - It's fine for easy-listening – maybe a 3-star album when played in the background – but handily jumps to 4 or 4.5 stars when you put on some headphones and really key in on the lyrics and the sound. This feature can sometimes be a liability, but based on album sales, it seems the general public didn't mind much. Finally, the pros: - The production is seriously cool. Atmospheric, panning echoes of vocals, mixed together with a muted lo-fi bass and drum combo, backing a strong, emotive, moody vocal from Lorde herself. Everything's put together professionally, and it sounds great. - A large number of tracks that are individually very, very strong. Green Light, Sober, Homemade Dynamite, The Louvre... And those are literally the first four consecutive tracks. Man. - Lorde experiments with piano ballads! And they're (arguably) every bit as strong as the darker, more dramatic tracks. Favourite track: Green Light Honourable mentions: Sober, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Liability 4/5

It's a really good album. I thought Lorde's first album, "Pure Heroine", was great. But there's something about Jack Antonoff's co-writing/production on this one that just rubs me a little bit the wrong way. He makes bangers, for sure. I just think that his influence over amazing female Pop artists makes them all sound the same. "Hard Feelings/Loveless" could easily have been a Taylor Swift jam. Other tracks wouldn't have been out of place on a Lana Del Rey album. Hopefully, the lukewarm response to Lorde's subsequent recording, "Solar Power", will lead her to dump Jack and move on. That said, "Green Light" fucking slaps. Three and one-half stars.

Absolute banger - Just as good as her hot ones interview. Would be a perfect 5 but I'm not a big fan of the first 2 songs. Either way, love this one

This is brilliant! I was expecting to hate this based on how much I hate hearing that one song which got played in every shop and by every radio station for years. Great songs though, a mix of saccharin pop but with inventive production and fun twists. It has depth and nuance while still being catchy and approachable. It's hard not to like this, and is way better than that one stupid fucking song (which isn't on this album). edit: the song isn't that bad really, it's just if you are forced to hear something over and over wherever you go for a couple of years, you are obliged to hate it.

Good album, but this list is crazy to include this one but not Pure Heroine.

I think with each album Lorde gets better and better. This being her second she’s grappling with newfound fame and all the pressures that come along with getting a follow-up to her blockbuster premier. It’s a good follow-up, and the one that follows this is even better.

I was surprised to see Lorde on this list. And if you are going to have Lorde why not have the more groundbreaking Pure Heroine? This is good but not outstanding indie pop. There are a couple keepers on here.

Great feel to this album. Painful themes, gritty lyrics and melodies - Creative sound production.

7 / 10 Pop Electrónico con buena instrumentación. Bueno par ser pop.

Four songs into the first listen and I was thinking 2 or 3. Then I got like 5 songs I liked in a row, and decided to give the album another listen. Man it grows on you. Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Writer in the Dark, Supercut, Perfect Places. Very nice album.

2/23/24

A very beautiful follow up and departure from Lorde's debut album. This record is full of emotion: from lyrics, melodies, instruments... Everything feels purposeful in conveying a message of heart ache. There is a hint of optimism in a few songs that keeps this album from being a downer. I was pleasantly surprised by this record. I love Lorde's vocal phrasing and her voice is beautiful and at times, gritty and raw. There are some vocoder stuff that she uses on this record that adds to the song. We know she is a great singer, so the use of any vocal distortion just adds that extra layer to the depth of these beautifully written songs. All the internet memes aside, this is a solid 4/5

I kinda liked the vibe, it wasn’t a super banger but good anyway.

Beautiful! Big stretches have minimal instrumentals, which gives the vocals room to shine. Listened to it with headphones, which maybe gave it extra kick. I'm officially a big fan.

Melodrama is the second album by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde. This electropop album followed her breakthrough debut album Pure Heroine, and was an instant success, receiving more acclaim than her debut and topping the charts in the US and Canada in its first week of release. This is an emotion-evoking album with themes of heartbreak and loneliness. Lorde's incredible vocals carry the album with intricate levels of mixing and multi-tracking. This album has been certified gold in Denmark, Poland, & the UK, platinum in Australia, Canada, & the US, and finally 3x platinum in Lorde's home country of New Zealand. Melodrama is a beautiful album, crafted with care and performed amazingly by Lorde. I'm upset I never heard anything about this album until now because I liked the vibe of the it, including a lot of the songs. I will have to listen to more albums by Lorde. Highly recommend this album!

YAYYY A BANGERRRRR. A staple of my vinyl collection, such a good dam album. Very close to being a 5 but this listen I found some of the lyrics to be a little bit cringier than I'd like them to be. Apart from that though it's dope. Fav songs: - Green Light - Sober - The Louvre - Writer in the Dark - Supercut - Perfect Places

A great album! Not my kind of music, but very well made and I enjoyed my listen. Some of the transitions were a little weird, especially in the first half of the album, but I think that’s just a me thing.

I had no experience with Lorde except for that one song. This album kind of blew me away based on my low expectations. It started off really strong and then ended with some bangers as well. Supercut feels like an all-timer. Track reactions: 1 - When this one kicked into gear at the one minute mark, I was into it. Starting out with a banger. 2 - This is certainly a groove. 3 - Pretty good track flows well from the previous. 4 - Nothing special but not a skip either. 5 - Such a gentle pleasant track. 6 - Interesting track. I don't see me replaying it a lot but it was a good listen. 7 & 8 - More chill background music 9 - This is just an absolute banger. 10 - There's a reprise?? Nice. 11 - Another really nice track. What a finish!

I really liked this album my first time through. On the second I noticed from the wiki that Jack Antonoff was listed as the producer on this one (as well as co-songwriter!) which made a ton of sense. I'm gonna go 4 stars mostly because it's so new and I'm curious if it's going to stand the test of time or not.

Yeah this is really really good. Love a bit of pop

I was overdue a listen of this...it's okay isn't it?

Really liked this. Favourites- green light, sober, liability, writer in the dark, perfect places

If Pure Heroine was a glimpse into the waning days of Lorde's teenage dwellings, then Melodrama is the chronicling of the immersion of adulthood in all of its messy, exhilarating, exhausting and ultimately beautiful ways. Calling it Melodrama feels apt, seeing as though Lorde had found herself in a crossroads in the most public of circumstances yet she managed to spin it into the kind of statement that would be looked upon as perhaps her finest to date. Now dance to the boom. Favorites: Green Light, The Louvre, Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Writer in the Dark, Supercut.

Interesting artist, never heard of her but I like her sound.

okay j'adore !! not immediately my fav but 1) the vibes felt very ashe-like or "big" sounding & therefore not anything like the indie/bedroom type-pop i've been listening to for the last three years and that made 2) a whole reintroduction to the joys of pure, good, mainstream pop and that was very pleasant -liability -writer in the dark -perfect places enormous shout-out to homemade dynamite 5/7

I believe both the artist and her songs are new to me, and I'm glad this project introduced me to both. She is very good as a composer, writer, and performer. She delivers her lyrics in her own way, and I am drawn in as she performs. I've listened to a few albums that are more recent like this one, and it's great. I don't want to get myself too mired in the "old man yells at cloud" cycle that shuts me off to contemporary artists. Some INCREDIBLE music is being made all the time, right now, all around the world, and I love it.

This was dope. Lorde makes some incredible music. The production was top notch and she made me feel things. Quite comparable to an Adele album.

7.5/10 - 4/5 Somewhat a better (imo) version of what Billie Eilish is doing. Really soft, but with good energy moments throughout. Great listen, solid down-the-middle pop.

Haven't listened to the full album before, but it is really good! Enjoyed that listen, and would happily come back again :)

Liked it a lot

Like a bit of Lorde - Green light is good. Alternative from 2017. Low 4.

you know what. lorde had some great singles in 2013, i had them all on repeat. royals, tennis court, and something else… either way, those were great and then i know she’s a tumblr darling and yet i never thought to listen to the 2017 stuff. i honestly can’t wait!! can’t wait to get to summer to listen to this and lament all my past relationships and trials and tribulations to such poppy exuberance. i really like it! i listened to it again today and will likely do so quite a lot in the future.

Buen disco.

just a nice pop sort of album with not that much standing out

Green light was a fucking bop and the rest of the songs followed suit. Definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would as I’ve never listened to a Lorde album before.

Never listened to Lorde before, overall solid. Top tracks: Liability, Perfect Places

Not a Lorde stan but I know almost every song on this album. She has made her mark in pop culture

Liked liability

dancefloor singersongwriter

Very good. Highly enjoyable

I loved this. I've recently been Jack Antonoff-pilled, so learning that he was the producer on this made me predisposed to liking it. The music is great, and it captures an entire generation so well. If there was a 4.5 stars that's what I'd give this. It came very close to 5 stars for me but didn't get all the way there.

my deepest darkest most shameful secret is that lorde's indie accent makes me giggle a lil bit. i wanna be cool and melodramatic too but some primordial part of my brain keeps getting distracted by how throaty she is anyways good album! faves r green light + supercut + perfect places

i still enjoy a lot of these songs but listening to the whole album gave me a feeling of fatigue hearing her sing like that. realizing maybe this didn't age incredibly well. still enjoyable though. we love you homemade dynamite and liability and supercut

Loved it.

Had low expectations for this one assuming wrongly that she was a one hit wonder. I was very pleasantly surprised. Would definitely return to this one.

Leuke pop

Pretty good, could throw it on for vibes

Having only heard one of their songs before I wasn't sure what to expect, but this is a pretty good album.

A bit, yes, melodramatic, but full of punch and energy that makes for great, digestible pop. The writing is strong, the hooks rise to the occasion and Antonoff's production is remarkably sharp and crisp. A reminder of how great 21st century pop really can be.

Love her voice, excellent album.

This is evil. Songs were sad but very good at the same time.

The best Lorde album to date. An enjoyable listen from start to finish. Dark, intriguing vocals. Immaculate production.

This album is outstanding.

Better than the South Park version

You can certainly tell the 2010's started getting emotional with the generations music with Lorde. If its not about the love your not getting outside, it's about the love your yearning inside. She's got great vocals, good beats and really knows what she's there to sing about. I just think having tunnel vision for that feeling of being ashamed makes you feel bummed out. It would've been cooler to hear her sing out a narrative talking about the overwhelming feelings she keeps under the surface

Solid first half, then tapers off a bit.

nice moody groove

Solide.

‘Supercut’ is one of my favorite Lorde songs

I was surprised how much I liked this one.

This one surprised me a little. I liked it more than I thought I would. There was some cool musical moments.

Great album, will listen to again

I already liked Lorde so this was an easy one to enjoy.

Bardzo miłe. 4/5

Album that I was already very familiar with. Loved this record when it came out and still love it today. Always surprising when an album by a 19 year old girl resonates with a 30 something man but here we are.

My brain wants to dislike this but my ears are like LETS GO

I knew one hit of her, but this is surprisingly good. Basically every song from the beginning to the end. She does have a great voice; it’s worth listening to more than once.

very good modern pop

Fun music but with better lyrics than most - definitely worth more than one listen.

Pop music, Electropop, Art Pop

That had some bangers, but had nothing to say. Does no rise to the level of Prince or Stevie Wonder

Some good songwriting, and I love the voice, but something about the production on this era of pop always rubs me the wrong way. Something overproduced or soulless about it. Talent survives it, but stops me really loving it.

much more engaging than i thought it would be!

WOW am I glad and surprised to see Lorde on this album. Putting my judgemental pants on, I would have initially guessed that she's just a little too contemporary for the curator(s) of this list for her inclusion so I'm happily surprised. I will say that this album is killer, but "Pure Heroine" HAS to be on the list if this album is. For the past few years of my life I've been listening to a lot of female led indie singer songwriters, indie rock, and pop acts, and I think every single one of them has to give credit to Lorde. My listening experience is filled with interruptions where I have to stop and say "oh this song sounds like X's song, which was made years after this Lorde song", over and over. Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams, recent Maggie Rogers, Clairo, dare I even say more recent Taylor Swift?, Alix Page, the list goes on. Look at this weirdly straightforward and scathing set of lyrics right from the jump: "She thinks you love the beach you're such a damn liar Those great whites they have big teeth Hope they bite you Thought you said that you would always be in love but you're not in love no more" It's just so blunt and on the nose and the delivery is so weird and unafraid of coming across as different... almost Bjork-like how she adds subdivision rhythms to make the lyrics work? "But we're the greatest They'll hang us in the Louvre Down the back, but who cares—still the Louvre" This cracked me up hahah I think every single singer-songwriter who self produces should not only listen to this album and also Lorde in general, but they should keep the album downloaded on their phone so they have access to it at all times. The production is absolutely slammed with incredible ideas to pull from and be inspired by. So many little synths, filters, vocalizations as rhythms, and yet somehow it's also SO clear and easy to listen to. It's like listening to the best mixers of today's day and age, everything is absolutely crystal clear.

Great album. I only recognized the first song, but I am glad that I listened to the rest of them. I was surprised that the rest of them were so popular as well, since I don't remember hearing them on the radio.

Enjoyed it

Not my style per se but she is very talented. Not sure I liked the flow of the album, again maybe because of style.

Alright this is pretty good. Very well produced, maybe overproduced but that’s the style. Kinda like Robyn and FKA Twigs, newer Taylor Swift... Lana Del Ray. I don’t like her vocal performance quite as much as most in that category, she feels less genuine or something, but still a solid 3.5. Liability does sound like My Chemical Romance.

Overall great pop album, only ever heard “Royals” from her but this was a solid 4, if the site send me another album from her ill look forward to it (but wont listen on my own xD) Highlights: Green Light, Supercut and Perfect Places

Highlights: Homemade Dynamite, Perfect Places, Supercut Leave Em's: The Louvre, Hard Feeling/Loveless Overall Thoughts: Some of the mega-hits on this album really carry my enjoyment of it. This is another album from my generation, and I have high school memories associated with the time that this album first came out. Lorde is a talented alternative artist and pushed alternative music into the main stream pop spotlight throughout her career. This album is another break up project geared more toward the female audience and for that reason it doesn't hit quite as hard as it potentially could have for me. There is plenty of emotion in the writing and instrumentation flips between sad and angry which makes it somewhat unpredictable. It is an enjoyable listen but it falls short of the perfect score. Score Breakdown: 3.940 & 4 -> 4.470

In her second album, Lorde largely continues the dark electropop sound started in Pure Heroine. She's matured with a more coherent song structure. Where Pure Heroine felt like the synths accompanied the mood but felt a bit independent from the subject matter, Melodrama songs feel entwined between the lyrics, the synth usage, and the direction each song takes. They tend to be more atmospheric, anthemic, with multi-layered effects, and there are some moments like in "Louvre" and "Hard Feelings" which have really impressive synth work that amplify the lyrical content but are used sparingly. One downside is that although the synths were impressive in many songs, they felt a lot lamer in others. The trap-influence in "Sober" felt out-of-place and lacked innovation. "Homemade Dynamite" felt like a Lorde song through an AI generator, with a catchy hook and ok synths but repetitive and a bit flat. Other tracks had other factors that allowed me to look past this, particularly how the synths were used in the song structure rather than what they actually are ("Green Light" is a good example that became such an infectious disco track). The sparser instrumentation in some tracks aimed to highlight Lorde's emotions in her vocals and lyrics, which worked fairly well in "Liability", but just felt boring in tracks like "Writers in the Dark" and the unnecessary reprise of "Liability." As a coherent album experience, Lorde hits the mark, with an attractive opener, and a satisfying closer, with hits dispersed in between. It's relatively short, and tracks don't go longer than they should (besides the "Liability" reprise). Favorites: Louvre, Hard Feelings / Loveless, Supercut

I can hear the inspiration Taylor Swift used to move from folk to pop. The album has lyrics worthy of a poet with standard highly produced radio beats. whenever it became too predictable, however, the artist would mix up her use of instruments and add a new element.

"Cause I remember the rush, when forever was us Before all of the winds of regret and mistrust Now we sit in your car and our love is a ghost Well, I guess I should go, yeah, I guess I should go" Da es nicht meine Lieblings-Mukke ist und mir die ruhigen Tracks dann doch etwas zu ruhig/melancholisch sind, gebe ich subjektive 4 von 5. Objektiv hat das Album sicherlich mehr verdient. Danke für das "nochmal jung fühlen". LG

Love lorde. Enjoyed this one quite a bit. Think the title of the album fits it well.

This is good but only becomes exceptional when she really leans into sounding like Kate Bush

I've always found Lorde to be a wonderfully weird artist. I wasn't familiar with this album except for a couple tunes. It's the album that my broken-hearted teenage girl needed back in the day. Liability just hit me to the core. Same with Writer in the Dark. I felt those songs deeply. Although I appreciate Lorde as a solo music artist, I absolutely adore her as a writer.

11/23/23. Happy Thanksgiving Day! This is my first revisit since this album released and I still hold the same opinion: solid alt-pop album and Lorde always keeps it interesting.

Kinda liked this. Will never listen to again

Surprisingly good. Great songwriting in places and really elevated by the production. Good, Lorde.

very nice

i'd never listened to an album by Lorde, but I have heard several of her singles over the years, some on this album, so this was not a surprise to me. I do really appreciate her songwriting and production style - I think even though this album is 6 or so years old, it still feels fresh and you can tell how influential her songwriting and style is on a lot of modern pop music. definitely a nice listen.

It's always good to see a "local" artist do well. I enjoy Lorde's really down to earth moments. Green Light certainly first the bill. The other standout track for me is Supercut.

This just made me wish I was listening to Pure Heroine. Went and read all your reviews and also agreed that some of these songs sound like they could’ve been made for anyone else. With that said, it’s still Lorde and I’m still giving it a 4.

Probably a 3.5, but this deserves a 4 more than some other fours I handed out. When it’s hitting, it is great pop. Lorde is a great vocalist with a fun voice, but when it is not hitting the songs just fall a bit flat. Generic sad girl, which is fine but hard to swallow after the highs of green light and supercut

4.5/5. Incredible sophomore effort and one of my favourite breakup albums of all time.

Accidentally listened to this twice, and not in album order thanks to a weird glitch with Amazon Music - but I enjoyed it more than I thought and was sorry it ended! Lorde's voice can be wearying after a while, but the album as a whole is well-balanced. I will definitely listen again.

yes i like this

Now this is an album that deserves to be on this list. I'm not really a fan of pop music in general, but Lorde's Melodrama is an album I can get behind. Everything about this album is very well crafted. From the lyrics, to the beats, to the storytelling. This is an incredibly well-made album that I have a ton of respect for. This almost doesn't feel like a pop album just because of how conceptual it is. This is a pretty good example of a concept album, with the whole album telling a story relating to the start and end of a relationship, beginning and ending with the party that started it all, going over the early obsession phase, the breakup, the acceptance of the breakup, and more. Overall, while this type of music isn't really "my thing" per se, I have a ton of respect for this album and artist and I can absolutely see why this is considered one of the best albums of 2017. High 4/5.

The sounds I hear on this album I would have never considered sounding good together but Lorde makes it beautiful. The melodies are fresh and original and the lyrics are heartbreaking and moving. This is a modern classic

A big, positive surprise on the list. I've heard Lorde before, but only single songs from the 2013 album. This one is great though. It's melodramatic (sic!), but not overly dramatic. It focuses on the main subject, which is great voice of Lorde. It tones down all the other components and here we are, with a one of the better pop albums I've ever heard.

Definitely an album where the whole is greater then the sum of its parts. I wouldn't ever really choose a individual song to just listen to other then Green Light, but the album as a whole is really solid

Depressing but good if you are in the mood for that

Good production

Enjoyed this!

Although Lorde is outside of my general preferred genres that I usually stick to, I have always liked her music. This album was no exception. Her often haunting, borderline sad tone throughout regardless of the melody and rhythm shifts, which can turn on a dime, is most often comforting and pleasant to me.

I enjoyed this. She is really talented. I never listen to the whole thing, so it was nice to hear.

Highlights: the louvre Liability, and reprise Perfect places Really enjoyable, not even really my thing but it’s just really good

Good album, needs relistening.

Deep, bassy, dark synthpop. This is a really solid album.

Prime Kiwi night time music.

At first I was wondering why this would be included but this album grew stronger the longer it went on

Love this got some tracks up the top make you feel like a bad bitch

Solid album. Don't remember enjoying it this much when I first listened

She has the most amazing voice

already knew this album pretty well.

jack antonoff's production does almost nothing for me, however lorde's vocal performance and thoughtful lyricism save this album from the dustbin of genericism and propel it to places that i hadnt expected. i adore this album, having spent lots of time with it during the pandemic years. maybe im clouded by nostalgia, but the soaring choruses really get me in my feelings. some lyrics border on corny, but work in the context of a modern pop album.

Bonus points for rhyming again and pseudoephedrine. Ya ya feelin' good on a Wednesday...

This had a little feeling like Taylor Swift but a more rick version. I did enjoy the album. Also reminded me of CHVCHES

Good late night solo driving music. Hopeful melancholy.

Not my style, but it sounded like quality music

I really enjoyed this one. Vocally, lyrically, musicly - a beauty throughout.

Wholly surprised by this one. What a stellar and moody pop album. The only thing I don't care for is Lorde's occasionally staccato delivery that can be awkward at times. With that said it's not a problem very often. I can absolutely hear Lorde's influence ALL OVER modern pop stars - namely Olivia Rodrigo, who I'm also a fan of. I think might buy on vinyl some day. 4

Sounds massive and fresh at the same time, but not so solid in some places.

Other than a couple brief songs I listened of Lorde in highschool, I never gave the artist much attention. This album feels pretty unique in its pop style but heavy, moody, and focused lyrics.. well produced too imo!

As good as it gets for pop for me. Wonderful album, great singalong moments. Tender songwriting

A pretty good pop album that's really elevated by the dynamic sounds and production, and some good lyrics. The songs aren't groundbreaking and the vocals are fine, but the rich backing beats keep it from falling flat

Great second album by Lorde.

I really like this album.

I found this much better than I was expecting, it's got soul to it, even if the generally ethereal production style isn't my favourite. Her voice makes it all work, it's smart, it's accessible and has some really interesting tracks. I enjoyed Liability the most.

Her voice is great. Thought she was a bit Kate Bush on Writer in the Dark. The producer Jack Antonoff has such a distinct sound as well. Liability is so like the Taylor Swift stuff he produced, or Bleachers I thought. I thought this was great all round

She sounds like she is excessively imitating FKA Twigs on 'Sober'... but imitation IS the highest form of flattery. I love this concept of going to a house party, being sad and leaving. I also adore the song 'Green Light' (which was the only one I had heard before). My new favourite is 'Homemade Dynamite'. 'Liability' is also great, and I recommend 'Perfect Places'. The whole album is great, but I just feel like there is something missing. I don't think I shall be listening again. 8/10.

Pop but interesting

Enjoyed it more than I expected

Nice and intimate

"Melodrama" is the second studio album by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde. Lorde retreated from the spotlight after her successful debut album "Heroine" and wrote "Melodrama" inspired by her disillusionment with fame and to capture heartbreak and solitude after her first breakup. The album was co-wrote with producer Jack Antonoff with the music piano-based, incorporating pulsing synths and dense electronic beats. Classified in the pop, electropop and art pop genres. The album had universal acclaim and commercially hit #1 in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. A stark piano opens the first single "Green Light." Lorde with emotional vocals and she raps. The piano changes, a beat comes in and the song explodes. This is a great song and a breakup song at that with a green light to move into the future. "Homemade Dynamite" was co-written with Tove Lo. Slower with synths and a dance beat. More pop. About being at a party. Lorde goes straight-forward ballad in "Liability." Very emotional as she sings about people calling her a liability. "Hard Feelings/Feelings" is a medley with distorted synths and various industrial noises. The most experimental song on the album. Lorde's obviously not afraid of going there. "Writer in the Dark" is another piano ballad and another stark one. Emotion vocals and a baroque ending. About waking up in a stranger's bed but she'll love him even if he calls the cops on her. She picks it up on "Supercut" and brings the dance pulse. Catchy as the intesity builds. The album closer "Perfect Places" was inspired by the deaths of David Bowie and Prince. A dance beat, piano, synth melody, layered vocals. A big song with the production and instrumentation. I really enjoyed this album. Very high-end pop production and songs. Lorde's vocals are emotional, direct and personal. It's what I would call a 2010's pop album but there's also a lot of experimental elements taking it beyond that. She leaves no doubt she's beyond a one-hit wonder.

Helt ait

The infamous Lorde whom which I have heard so much about: surprising. I felt listening to this you could pretty accurately pinpoint this as being a 2010s album with the production and 'pop' sound to it but didn't degrade it by any means. I came with high expectations and it didn't quite hit but with some memorable songs i knew immediately I enjoyed my time.

Fun pop album, enjoyable start to finish.

love the abundance of interesting sounds. definitely gets stronger towards the end, and far more depressing. fav songs: liability, sober II, writer in the dark, supercut, liability (reprise).

Lorde's second album is very impressive. A big step forward from her debut (at 17 no less). Sure, so credit goes to the very talented Jack Antonoff, but it the songs more than the savvy production that shine through. Mighty impressive indeed. It will be very interesting to see where goes from here.

Big Lorde guy.

Well-written, concise, a clear theme that progresses over the course of the album, great vocals and strong structuring. The only thing holding this project back is it’s sound, which isn’t even bad and complements the aesthetic—all in all one of the best pop albums of the 2010s.

I AM LORDE YA YA YA BUT FOR REAL I LOVE LORDE. Her first album is my favorite.

Green light carries the album, but it's still good overall.

BL: I love pure heroine - however I’ve never listened to Melodrama despite everyone unanimously agreeing this is her best album. Look forward to listening to it. AL: I loved it a lot. Lorde is a voice of a generation. She weaves stories of guilt and heartbreak and shame all into one melodramatic package, 100% worth the listen. Like pure heroine but more diverse in sound and higher production value. FT: “sober” “green light” 4/5

I'm not saying they're the same, but Lorde kinda replaced the void that Amy Winehouse left for me. She's just a really unique and interesting talent. I'm not saying that I listen to her stuff regularly (I don't), but it always draws me in when I hear it.

Really good pop music. Highlights were Green Light and Liability. Interesting comparison with the '80s pop of the Pet Shop Boys we heard earlier this week. More hip hop elements and modern lyrical presentation. It was even better on the 2nd listen.

Enjoyed this. Hadn't heard most of them before. I like the unusual sounds she makes though her voice can drag a little sometimes. Standout track: Sober II (Melodrama)

A bit bland?

Album #: 162 first impressions: I remember feeling kind of disappointed on my first listen of this album - I liked her debut a lot, and I feel like the glossiness (and come to learn, Jack Antonoff) of this album kind of diluted that. after listening through: I do think this album does a great job of encapsulating emotions at a specific time in life, on the cusp of adulthood, going through heartbreak, insecurity, when your friends are your life, etc. I was 26 when it came out, but I remember thinking it would have been perfect for me when I was a few years younger. It also sounds like the year when it came out, but without the worst aspects of that era (the dark nihilism/extreme vapidity of a lot of the popular music of the time.) post-reading reviews/wiki: Lorde (maybe this era specifically, I didn't spend a lot of time w her last album) feels like a hybrid of Taylor Swift (poignant, introspective lyrics, not super impressive, but distinctive vocals,) and the xx (dynamic, energetic, even when slow instrumentation that really captures specific emotions.) relisten?: I had forgotten about some old favorites: "Homemade Dynamite," "Supercut," "Perfect Places." And I never really stopped liking "Liability," and "Green Light" for specific moods. The rest of the songs are...fine. I can see how they fit into the album but I just don't find them as compelling or memorable.

Gott popp, passlegt melodrama.

This is a phenomenal pop album. Atmospheric and distinctive. Lord we voice is grainy and gutty and works well throughout the material. A modern masterclass in pop that’s anti-pop.

Quite liked it, I would never choose to listen to this style normally, but the time passed really quickly.

No me gusto

I don't care what people say, I like Lorde, and her music is good.

I liked what little Lorde I heard before checking this album out. This is solid stuff all around, I really like it. Great production, beautifully chill melodies, great vocal work.

These days, it's rare to find good pop albums. This is one of them. Lorde is has a fantastic voice, the production is top notch, and most (if not all) songs are at least listenable, if not better. Not one second did I have the feeling that I am wasting my time - something which I can't say for every album on this list. I especially liked Green Light and Supercut. This one was quite good. 4/5

Good album, I mostly don’t listen to music like this so it was a nice refresher. I liked almost all of the songs and the vocals were delivered perfectly. 4/5

One of my favorite discoveries when I gave this a shot about a year ago. Not at all my kind of music but I keep coming back to it. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding

She sings like she's singing to a baby. That's a little annoying. Otherwise it's good. Favorite song: Hard Feelings.

I like this album quite a lot, already owning and playing it when mood demands. I love her voice, fierce and smoky. Best song is the first one. It’s a conversational album, quirky song structures, closer to Brel than ABBA, with the right amount of flourish - the post-punk guitar part at the end of “The Louvre” a lovely example of this.

Super pretty album. It kept me interested the whole time. It was intense in a very effective way. I actually thought it sounded similar to Taylor Swift (and that was my least favorite thing about it).

This album is kinda fire

Yeah. Enjoyed it quite a bit on a dreary March day.

Melodrama is a masterful production, companion to Pure Heroine going down a little easier, standing beside. I'm consistently impressed with its flow, the constituent elements familiar yet laid out staggered. The reprise is always the denouement, splintering the every-other hit formula.

Très beau et album

Great pop album.

Not as good as the first

Shit was a lil gay...but I guess I'm a little gay cause I dugged it

Very cool album I am now a fan !!

A very tight conceptual pop album with some really memorable songs capturing the essence of teenage drama/turmoil. Really dug this album.

Lorde help me, it's a Lorde album. Oh boy. I had not listened to this one. Somehow, I missed it coming out between 'Pure Heroine' and 'Solar Power.' In terms of enjoyment, 'Solar Power' is at the top of my list, but I really see why this album was so highly praised. 'Green Light' is maybe the standout song for me, but it's not a hit-heavy album, which frankly I didn't want it to be. It was nice and solid throughout, the strength coming from the uniqueness of her vocals and the lyrics. A really great album from Lorde.

Green Light is a banger. Never listened to a Lorde album all the way through before. I remember David Bowie saying she was the future of music years ago which is high praise. I thought he was high on spice at the time, which was maybe a little unfair. Enjoyed the album, it has been added to the library rotation and I can confirm I will be awarding 4 stars. Well done, Lorde x

Good album. If Bowie was a big fan then she must have a few crackers although I think he didn't really rate Paul McCartney. This interests me more than Adele's for example. Head bopping good time.

Once I started getting into this i really enjoyed this album. It is almost a concept album about a bar hoping teen finding herself after a massive break up. It is both uplifting an chaotic - two things I live in the music I listen to. Lorde is not someone I have readily listened to. Maybe I am not her target market or maybe I just need to listen to different things. On a side not, I am still not convinced by Jack Antonoff. I still don't know if his production elevates or ties down all the amazing artists he works with. I am beginning to think that his signature style is not unlike a sampler, pro-tools or even an antique effects pedal with each artist using him as a tool. Time will tell. This album. Is one of those ones I wish I could score out of ten as I don't feel it deserves 4 stars but it is so much better than most of the stuff I give 3s to.

Disaffected, lost, aggrieved, it sure sounds tough being Lorde but from this we get a striking album, with a grand sound from a compelling vocalist.

Really well produced album. Plenty of great pop songs on it.

Best songs: green light, sober, supercut, homemade dynamite Worst song: liability

Pretty good

Had this album already. My original review: When this came out I was too edgy and disliked pop for the sake of disliking it lmao. Actually quite a nice album, easy listen for sure, varied songs and I'm surprised how much of it I liked. Saved tracks: Sober, Homemade Dynamite, The Louvre, Sober II (Melodrama)

I’m not sure there’s a Lorde song I don’t instantly like. But for some reason I haven’t listened to this album before. “Liability” breaks my heart.

Lorde... А на строчках "We told you this was melodrama" прям почти поплыл.

Enjoyed it

Niet helemaal mijn smaak, maar best ok. 4*

Lorde's been cool in my books from the moment I heard Royals for the first time. She's got substance and depth, and she's an interesting artist who just so happens to express herself through the kind of top 40 pop music I usually avoid. I like this album too. It's dramatic and intense, but also cavalier and intrepid in such a fun way. I like.

I like and enjoyed the album

I like Green Light and Liability, but this is my first time listening to the whole album. The other songs are fine, but overall I like this album more than most we've listened to.

This was alright. It tries to be anthemic when it doesn't have the balls to be so. I have only heard her hit until now. And this wasn't a bad listen.

Good, fun ‘Saturday night’ pop which at times hints at a Kate Bush stylings - maybe it gets repetitive towards the end.

The lyrics are alright. Reminds me a little of how Taylor Swift writes. Not what I would seek out to listen to though

I didn’t have a Tumblr but I did have poor mental health.

Some absolute bangers with perfect pop production throughout, this is a brooding masterpiece

Really love Lorde, I think her other album is 5* so this one is 4* but still such a beautiful unique voice

Don't mind it

It's actually a nice album! I know Lorde only from the extremely annoying song "Royals", which was definitely overplayed on the radio soon after it was initially released. My hatred for this song was sufficient for me to never try any other track from her album. Apparently only until today. I still dont know any other song from her previous album, but if it's as good as this one, then I should quickly make up for that mistake. "Melodrama" opens up with a really catchy song "Green Light", one of the singles from this record. This track also sets up the mood of the album (if you couldn't make it up from the title of the album), and this rather sad and melancholic theme is creating a nice atmosphere. It's not overwhelming at any point, it gives you a perfect look into the state of mind and emotions of author. I really like songs like "Louvre" and both parts of "Sober" really well done stuff. I guess there's two questions - is it good enough for this list? And regardless, why isn't this album more popular? Small contradictions, but still, I had a nice time with this album.

This album was fantastic. Lorde is a great performer and writer. Favorite track: Hard Feelings/Loveless

Pretty fucking good album. Fav song: Liability

I really like this one. Probably my favorite of the albums that are new to me from this project. I did know of it and already really liked “Green Light”. I’m going to give it a 4 even if it leans towards a 5, though. That’s mostly because of “Liability”, which I really didn’t like (and for some reason is on here twice?). I think I might like this more on a second listen, though.

I've known Lorde is supposed to be good but this was the first time I've given an album of hers a listen. Some pretty good songs and musically very interesting. Will come back to this.

8.5/10

Love it 4

Very decent pop album. I don't really care for pop, but if I was going to listen to pop, I'd listen to something like this. 3.75/5

When this came out I was too edgy and disliked pop for the sake of disliking it lmao. Actually quite a nice album, easy listen for sure, varied songs and I'm surprised how much of it I liked. Saved tracks: Sober, Homemade Dynamite, The Louvre, Sober II (Melodrama)

Extremely polished and a dramatic shift from her debut, Lorde is battling a broken heart and the lust for partying on Melodrama. I absolute love the first couple of tracks and while there are a few lesser lows along the way, I was really entertained and quite frankly a bit shocked about the quality pop songwriting on this.

very good, enjoyed it.

I found this album surprisingly tough to rate. In a vacuum it's a good album that features her distinctive vocal and musical styles well. I think that she's growing up as a lyricist and trying new things. However, I liked her first album a lot, and this feels like a step back from that. I could see a situation where, as time goes one, I grow to have a greater appreciation for this album relative to Pure Heroine, but as it stands this album feels a lot less fun and interesting. Still good, but definitely stuck in the shadow of it's older sibling 4/5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_8S_7P7abM

Ooh, well I know I love Green Light before we even start. Well... This whole thing was like the Taylor Swift of self loathing and I thought it was great! Louvre and Liability were standouts, and have some real wit and humour about them. The music was good, but not astounding, and a little bit too enamoured of that soft bloopy bass drum sound.

I’m a total sucker for Jack Antonoff production.

Favorite songs: Sober

Superior pop

I like it but it all sounds pretty similar, not much range.

I can’t wait for the REAL royal to put another album out. It’s been too long

Not my type of music normally but greatly appreciated this album. Nice beat to the songs and she has a great voice.

listened to again fantastic exploration of love lost

Banger

Banger

Solid album overall. Can see why she became a star. No song on it's own stands out to me but I did enjoy it all.

Honestly never listened to lorde before other than what had played on the radio. Very mad at radio stations for not playing “Green Light” more, it’s a banger. Her vocals are so cool and unique, somehow it reminds me of a chilled out Cyndi Lauper. Definitely an iconic artist of her generation. I was reluctant to listen to her before this but I will definitely check out her stuff when it releases. “Dynamite” is really great too. Album takes a turn at “Liability” and becomes more dramatic and bittersweet.

The album starts like almost any other pop album, however as the following songs starts, all the songs sound melancholic, like she misses something but at the same time is happy to let the past be. The last song give this feeling of overcoming this part of her life but she will miss those days.

Like lorde - don't really listen to this type of music often

Decent for a pop album

Very well produced marriage of pop music and genuine, from-the-heart songwriting. Really cool!

Oh yeah Lorde! I forgot about her, she was a hype a while back. I think I really like her lyrics and use of chords and melody, but there is something about her voice and how heavily produced it all is that I don't super love. but that's not that it is bad, it just isn't my thing. There's a few songs I really liked on here, the one about "I am my mother's child" is a bit spoilt as I have seen numerous videos of her shushing crowds whilst she does that bit accapella and absolutely butchers it. Tough to sing. Also the last song - perfect places! Absolute shock for me, thought that was written by First Aid Kit. Bizarre because it sounds like it was written for country singers. Think I prefer their version but credit to Lorde for an truly excellent song there!

This really surprised me. Never thought I liked Lorde and kind of disregarded her. I tried to listen to her newest album but wasn't sure. This however was pretty good! Occasional boring or generic bits but some really good stuff. Nice song structures and buildings of sounds. Good lyrics which nicely flow with the music, not just singing over chords.

shhhhhhhh👄☝️

Either a 3 or 4 depending on the day. Caught me on a good one.

I enjoy both Lorde and Antonoff. Any time I hear something I enjoy from new music from modern pop acts I think "did Antonoff produce this?" and many times I've been right and love it. Yet here... the magic is missing. I think another comment said it right: it's missing the bangers. This album feels 90% of the way there to being great, but it's just missing those one or two songs that, for me, take it to a 5/5.

Very good, added a bunch to playlist kinda depressing tho

Really good

Good to vibe to but it’s depressing. A sad vibe album. Perfect for a heartbreak.

This album is super easy to listen to. I of course like greenlight because I'm a basic betch. Homemade dynamite is a great track.

4 might be a bit much but I can't think of a better pop album for a long time. Good tunes, good production, decent lyrics

modern classic

I tell my kids all the time that I don't care too much for pop but that there are a few incredibly talented female pop artists who have emerged in the last decade or so. I place Lorde in this category with the likes of Taylor Swift or Adele - say what you want, but these ladies can write incredible lyrics and arrange very catchy, melodic songs. They can also belt them out. This album from Lorde is a great example - her lyrics are fiercely emotional (Green Light, Writer in the Dark), edgy(ish) commentaries (Homemade Dynamite, Loveless), or smart wordplay and double meaning (Liability - Lorde is the girl that she loves). And her vocals are great; really mesh nicely with the various musical arrangements. In the end, this is mostly a breakup album but it feels like much more than that. Partly because she didn't just make them all sad sounding; I liked her mixing in of uptempo beats. Couldn't quite give it a 5 (tracks 7-11 not quite as good as the first 6), but it was close.

veislu plata

Was really into Lorde in the initial excitement when first emerging, like she was helping set a new direction for pop music. Not as sure now, it somehow feels dated already.

Fav tracks: green light, homemade, sober, liabi maybe perfect places?

Its actually pretty impressive stuff. Some genuinely cutting edge pop. Moving

I like the idea of this as a loose concept album. Also Liability will always get me in my feelings. 8/10

First time really listening to lorde and I liked it

I think it was midway through the second song that I realized that Jack Antinoff definitely had something to do with this. I wasn't a fan of the first song, but the rest of the album slowly won me over (save for maybe the two reprises). Reminds me of the shift Nelly Furtado made back in the mid 00s. Lorde is really the star here: her voice is great and the lyrics are, at the same time, personal yet totally relatable. Favorite tracks: "Perfect Places", "Sober", "Homemade Dynamite", "Liability"

it was ok

solid album. gorgeous voice

This album was a joy to listen to. Such a terrific variety of music, from the poppy and energetic to the soulful and introspective. 'Liability' and 'Writer in the Dark' are my favourites, but there's nothing to dislike here. Lorde is a fantastic vocalist and a genuine song-writing talent.

No fucking cap! Perfect Places ako nisam čuo 100 puta.

Intelligent, engaging, mature pop music. Not really my thing (not loud enough!) but really good. Kiwis get an extra 🌟 too!

Very good, good stuff, hard to believe she made that song about green beans

All I really knew of Lorde was that Royals song she did when she was about 15 and she's mates with Taylor Swift. This is very similar to Taylor's more poppy stuff. A quick check notices that Taylor's co-songwriting chief Jack Antoff is on the credits. Surprisingly good indie pop. Delivered in a much more palatable way for my tastes. 4/5

Buenaso. Aguante Lorde

Nice pop album!

I find that the songs run the risk of same-iness, but is also has perfect places, so... you know, it's not all bad.

I came not expecting much. I haven't listened to much Lorde, but wow. This album is one of the deepest and most touching pop records out there.

Heerlijke dance-achtige muziek! Mijn favoriet is "Green Light"

Finally an album I've heard before! :D I loved it when it came out and I love it now. Lorde's vocals and songwriting on this album are just top-notch. A few songs that don't quite hit, but they are still far from unlistenable. 8/10

3.5 stars. There were some bops that I could get into

Good pop, very unique for a young artist.

Melodrama is a good synth-pop album by singer-songwriter Lorde. The songs "Green Light", "Perfect Places", and "Homemade Dynamite" were released as singles. The album sounds a lot more mature than her previous (debut) album.

Will buy.

Ça se laisse bien écouter Fav : Supercut

Maybe a bit of its time, not sure how it'll date but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Kappalemateriaali on lähes poikkeuksetta varsin laadukasta, eikä suurempia huteja löydy. Kappaleista parhaiten itselleni toimi slovarit Liability ja jopa hieman Tori Amosmainen Writer in the Dark.

pretty fire

great dance pop album.

Want to listen again - could accompany life moments
