Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Best Song: Praise You I didn't like this is the late 90s and I don't like this now. It is repetitive and boring. Each song seems to pick one line of dialogue and then repeat it over, and over, and over, and over, and over for five minutes. I spent most of the time listening to this going back and forth whether this should have been included on the 1001. It does tell a story of sorts of the music scene in 1998 in a post grunge, pre-boy band/Brittney, Christina, P!nk era but, at the same time, this is feels like a one hit wonder album to me. In other words, I don't really think Fatboy Slim made a huge impact to music outside of having that 'Praise You' song. Maybe I'm wrong and all the Slim heads will come out of the walls and correct me. 2/5.
Not my music
1.75 - Praise You is very good. Most everything else is too repetitive, but I liked this a lot more than The Chemical Brothers.
whatecer
Fat boy slims you’ve come a long way baby is an interesting album. Not what I excepted, had always heard of him but never listened. I expected a pop rock sort of like the new radicals, not moby!?
Always quite liked Praise You back in the nineties, but a whole album of this style of music was just a bit too long and repetitive for me.
Although not my thing at all, individual tracks were listenable, if not a tad repetitive. However, a whole album was too much for me.
Ok you’re not from brighten and praise you are bangers. Your not from brighten sounds like it should be the opener for an 2000s romcom. Overall each song on the album has repeating sounds and short lyrics that also repeat making it VERY annoying.
Cool samples but not quite my style
There must be an audience for this, but it is not me.
So much repetition and just looped sound effects not my cup of tea at all.
Si, pero no repitas "fatboy slim is fucking in heaven" 41 veces en 3 minutos.
repetitive. too simplistic. some kind of grating.
fun but not my thing
There are a few really good tracks on here, but not sure I'd ever find myself listening to it all the way through again. It gets a little repetitive for me. Highlights: "Praise You" and "Soul Surfing"
Like with previous electronic albums the repetition is grating. The runtime could have been cut by half. It is relatively fun and works as background music for gaming.
I guess this is probably ok for a dance club, but I didn't enjoy it that much. Not my favourite kind of music. Too long and pretty repetitive. "Praise you" is the track I enjoyed the most.
Meh
Telling that I got both this one and the Chemical Brothers in the same week. Listening to them together -- Fatboy Slim is a pale, pale pretender to what some of the more interesting EDM is. While the Chemical Brothers were more focused on creating soundscapes around the samples they chose, FS simply bangs that sample into your brain again and again. Now, if you're rolling on molly and you just wanna dance, I guess this would be a decent listen -- but just normally? Nah.
Like I don’t hate the album but i don’t know, it sounds like a Fat Boy Slim album
Definitely not my favourite album. I found a lot of the songs really didn't jive with me, and they were also too long.
I’m a very lyric heavy person, and find myself needing them to really enjoy most songs so this wasn’t for me. Kept half dancing to this though so I can for sure say I do see the appeal. In the club or perhaps in a movie/tv scene I would enjoy this a lot more. But not what I’m looking for, so not for me. Which is how I’m ranking these.
eehm not really my type but has some good ones
Liked: In Heaven, Kalifornia, Praise You Disliked: Rockafeller Skank
Repetitive ... (Repetitive). Not just the "lyrics" but the beats are also repetitive. Some of them sound good for about 10 seconds. Then repeat. Most of the tracks are also annoying. Praise You is actually decent, and it raises the score up to 2. Barely.
i did not particularly like the songs to begin with but then he did the same thing like 10 more times
I came into this wanting to defend it more, as I do like fun weird electronic music, but some parts were legitimately very unpleasant and annoying. I did find the Heaven song funny though
It is wild that an album can have Right Here/Right Now, Rockafeller Skank, and Praise You, but also so much complete dreck. The following tracks stink so much they're bringing the score down to a 2: In Heaven Build It Up, Tear It Down Kalifornia Acid 8000
Repetitive, like most EDM I guess. There were interesting things here, but nothing that I wanted to hear repeated as nauseam.
These tracks are joyous and fun. I love the inventive samples and hooks created with them. They are also too long for my taste. With only the shortest track at just under four minutes, and many in excess of six, I find myself really hyped at the start of every new song because I'd started to check out with the repetition of the previous. When I have the album playing in the background I'm digging on it. The Rockafeller Skank Praise You
I’ve heard of fat boy slim and I’ve heard a few songs but not this whole album. I’m not a fan of electronic music at all. This album cover is great. Right Here Right Now: 6.5/10 Sounds like a big song. Great album opener. The Rockafeller Skank: 6.4/10 Iconic song. Fucking in Heaven: 6.2/10 Really nothing to this song. Gangster Trippin: 5.4/10 Pretty boring. Build it up, Tear it down: 5.8/10 I like the build it up, tear it down part with the guitar. Kalifornia: 6/10 Cool sounding Soul Surfing: 5.2/10 You’re not from Brighton: 5/10 Praise You: 6.6/10 Good piano. Best song on the album. Love Island: 5.6/10 Interesting intro. Acid 8000: 5/10 Very long song.
One of the best electronic albums I have listened to. I knew a few songs with "Praise You" being an absolute bop- shoutout to the "Michael Jordan to the Max" documentary. However like every electronic album, I am so sick of the sound by the end and want it off. I don't know why all these albums have to be a hour long. Why! 2.5/5- going down to 2 for length
Ok
Not my favorite but recognized some classes on here.
I understand why people like "Rockerfeller Skank" and "Praise You." I found myself enjoying this as music to work to, here and there, but it's also SO tedious and repetitious. All Sound Same can be fine if you really like the sound, but I don't, especially. And "Fucking in Heaven" was terrible.
A 90's dance record with a lot of noise and a few too many speaky intros. There were a couple classic songs on the record (The Rockefeller Skank and Praise You) which I recognized, but overall it was a wash of sound and dance beats that I couldn't really get into. Now I'm not an EDM fan by any stretch, but this album felt stuck in its time, echoing contemporaries Run DMC and The Beastie Boys at times, but overall just feeling like a 90s record that I couldn't get into 30 years later. 4/10
Well, they do have that one song… but the rest is unremarkable
Fatboy Slim will always remind me of Derry girls Started off strong but every song is just soooo repetitive I had to skip most of them towards the end The hits are great and there's a reason they're popular, but I don't think that should justify this album being classed as one of the best of all time
Rhythms were fun but it was way too repetitive. I wanted to like it but the number of times it just said "f***" over and over without any real musicality didn't do much for me.
Right here, right now - 4 The Rockafeller skank - 4 In heaven - 3 Gangster trippin - 4 Build it up, tear it down - 2 Kalifornia - 2 Soul surfing - 2 You're not from Brighton - 2 Praise you - 3 Love island - 1 Acid 8000 - 1
Meh. This music sounds like DnB candy. I think people get pissed off at Passion Pit for the same reason, but I love Passion Pit. Whenever I want to hear electronic style music, I want to hear something a little more exciting than this. I want techno, i want crazy synths, I want minimalist stuff; the hip-hoppy DJ scratches here feel kinda corny even though they’re well done. I don’t like the sample selection like this is some little big planet ass music
2/5. I am admittedly not the most familiar with Big Beat as a genre. I basically only previously knew the Prodigy with the crab album (fat of the land.) Fatboy Slim was another one of the large artists in that scene, and he was up there with the prodigy as one of the few big beat artists to make a splash in the U.S.. as for this album it’s some sample-heavy danceable electronic music. A lot of the songs I started off thinking “this is kinda catchy.” But then the biggest flaw of this album for me rears its head, and it’s that every song on here is just a minute or two too long which turns it into a slog to get through.
Alright I guess...not in the mood, doesn't land.
Insanely repetitive. I thought the other reviews were exaggerating, boy was I wrong.
It is what it is - dance club music with tons of beats based on snippets of melodies and alliterative chants. It would be fun w a crowd that wants to get wild, but as an album I need to listen to before I die, it doesn’t cut it.
Repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive and so forth and so on
Got a few bangers on it but I just can’t really get into it as an album
Bouncy, fun to listen to Great use of samples, but sometimess they feel repetitive or overused. I think if somone wanted to listen to a production album, Endtroducing... would be a better option, but this is better for a "good time" These songs are either heat or very annoying, mostly the latter unfortunately. I feel like I'll listen through 15 minutes of trash for 30 minutes of great production
Interesting and mildly entertaining in the background.
Mah non il mio genere noioso
couldnt make it through but heres a few stars for technical prowess and cultural impact
This was ok. I knew Rockefeller Skank and Praise You. They make me think of the late 90’s. The songs were too long.
I'm personally not a fan of the whole big beat/house genre of music. I get that the point of it is to be repetitive and danceable, but for someone like me who is not big into the whole dance club scene, I don't really understand music like this and it becomes more along the lines of background music for me. I did recognize a few of the samples though. Thought it was cool that they sampled a James Gang song on "Right Here, Right Now".
Very very very very very very very repetitive. "praise you" still slaps tho
smorilo me ovo
It gets pretty damn monotonous pretty damn quickly....and there's a song absolutely littered with f-bombs. At least we got a couple radio hits on this one. What puts this above/below the OTHER Fatboy Slim album (if there's not more) on this list. 1,001 is a big number - not sure why the author/editor has so many multiple 'meh' albums by so many artists.
Man, I did not know that this album was going to feel as long as it did. I've spoken before of the problems with a "CD" first outlook when creating music. This is a perfect example of that, it just felt like it was too long too many long repetitive songs. The few I remembered were a welcome respite from the rest of the album.
Yeah not my style lets repeat the same phrase 50 times in a song and have some noise in the back. 2/5
Too repetitive and juvenile. Out of my wheelhouse for sure.
Not my style but quite entertaining
I liked it but I will not listen to it again.
better than the other one
Meh
its fine. its a dance album. i get it. 2.5
Oh no. I had to live through this balls at the time, and everyone loving it. You could not go anywhere or do anything in the late 90s without a song from this album invading your personal space without consent. If it wasn't ol' saggy britches boning Zoe Ball and her gushing all about it, it was on the radio, and if it wasn't on the radio it was in your face at school, in the shop, blasting from the cars of steeks. And it was terrible. The summit and nadir of everything dance music had been steaming towards. So yes, it's wall to wall hits. The only good one is if course Right Here Right Now. By the very nature of the genre, each track only has about 1 minute of material, so you can get through the whole album in about twelve minutes and get the same effect as if you had listened to the whole thing.
Would rate it 2.5 if I could. Liked the way he used the samples, fun album, good listen, just not my genre.
Maybe it was years of sitting through shitty corporate presentations which (seemingly contractually) used "right here right now" as an introduction to unsuccessfully try & get people excited.....maybe it was the appalling vocal repetition in some songs (especially during 'farking in heaven'), but this was pure punishment in parts. Feels like Fatboy is a "small dose" artist +1 star awarded for the nerd cred - album produced on an oldskool Atari ST
It's alright, on the wrong side of repetetive sample dance stuff. Rockafeller skank brings up bad memories
Very repetetive, helped me study though
The 2nd album I ever bought with my own money. Rockafella Skank was on Fifa 99 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It’s still a banger. Right Here Right Now and Praise You also great The rest is hot garbage. I’m giving a generous 2 just because I like those three songs.
The sound track to every ski town in the 90s. Some of the songs are good, some are bad. I wouldn’t want to listen to this often but it was fun for a little while
This is, quite simply, too much Fatboy Slim
Appreciate the significance, but sounds a bit basic to 2025 ears. 2.49 stars rounded back down to a flat deuce
Nice beats. But it is not for me
every song is really good for like the first minute and a half, then the same beat just loops about 200 more times making you completely sick of it
Besonders bekannte Stücke wie „The Rockafeller Skank“, „Praise You“, „Right Here, Right Now“ und „Gangster Trippin“ zeigen die klare rhythmische Linie und die durchdachte Struktur der Songs.
Alright, very dated now though
Not bad
Why do I suddenly feel inclined to wear frosted tips, a puka necklace, and pose aggressively above a fish eye lens?
idk man, i like fatboy slim, but this is not his finest work. 1.5 today
I dodnt expect to hate this so much. The samples are utterly grating
It's interesting, but that’s about it. Songs are repetative and the beat drops aren’t all that amusing. Felt that they were always going on longer than they should.
Thought I was going to enjoy this as I had fond memories from my yoof. Listening to it now though, the rose tinted spectacles of memories past quickly fell away. Some things are better left in the past...
I've heard so much about Fatboy Slim and how essential groundbreaking he was in his era in various documentaries, but I feel like no one really talks about him anymore. I've heard "Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You" a lot, but I feel like it's always in the context of nostalgia. There's some cool sounds here, but so much of it is too redundant. Maybe that's the point? I dunno. I typically enjoy dance music and turntablism, but I can't grasp the appeal of Fatboy Slim. Just kinda boring and repetitive. J-j-j-ust kinda kinda kinda kinda boring and repetitive Just kinda boring and repetitive-tive-tive-tive just kinda boring and repetitive
Pretty good but got bored
Quite enjoyed but dragged on towards the end
It's obviously good music, but I found it irritating to listen to as an album. The songs by themselves can be fun, and dancing to them is great. It is just incredibly boring as an album.
Not a fan. Not bad by any means, but not for me. The hits are classics for obvious reason with praise you being my standout
Tämä genre ei vaan uppoa...
I find it really hard to comprehend that this is/was rave music
Just ok. I was hoping for more...
Head nodding turns to stomach turning on the fifteenth loop in all of these songs.
The first two minutes of every song were really delightful. But every song was much longer. I wanted to give this a higher score but I found myself excited for every song to end.
Two absolute bangers and a whole lot of shit Best Song: Right Here, Right Now Rating: 3.5/10 Stars: 2
dance, electr., rap, acid, 1998 -> 2
A few bangers but otherwise pretty meh
This is a real mixed bag. There are three or four good tracks that anyone who was alive in the 90s is likely to remember but the rest are repetitive and an after a little while just plain irritating.
Every song appears to be the same loop repeated for the entire song. But your review is very cute so I’m going 2 instead of 1.
I like the two hits that’s all
Not the biggest fan of fatboy slim - It's just so...repetitive? hyped me up for a pilates class though.
My life remained the same before and after this album. I found it repetitive and a bit annoying at times. Electronic music like this has the potential to be so much better and more intricate! The redeeming factor was the sampling. The sampling was creative and fun!
More than anything it is embarrassing that this exists.
Not really. Repetitive to annoyance.
I have a soft spot for Right here, right now because my daughter unexpectedly loved it when she was pre-school age. But I’ll be honest the album is just background noise to me.
Dear electronic music artists, Two minutes is more than enough time to get the point across in a song that just repeats the same phrase over and over again. If the majority of your songs are hitting the 5-minute mark, those songs are WAY too long. Sincerely, The world
Meh
The song “Praise You” is the only thing that saved this from being a 1.
This big beat album is grating and overblown, its repetitive hooks and blaring samples quickly wearing thin under a barrage of forced energy and empty swagger. Yet beneath the bombast, a few calmer, groove-driven moments hint at a more nuanced, hypnotic sound the record rarely explores, making it feel like a missed opportunity buried under its own noise.
Meh
Not really my thing. Reminds me of early Youtube days and not in a good way. It sounds pretty cinematic tho- I can see the appeal
Demasiado urbano y experimental para mí. He vuelto a dejarlo a medias. ⭐⭐
The first 2 songs are iconic, after that the album sort of falls off for me. 2.49 stars.
This is a sample pack as an album. Good in short clips and has been used commercially to great effect. 90’s viral music
Eh
I wanted to feel the magic but I just simply could not.
Has some iconic and memorable tracks, but as an album it's painfully repetitive.
So far, this album is upbeat and fun beats BUT so repetitive that it gets annoying and seems to lack creativity. There are interesting and fun aspects to the beat and rhythm of the music, but I’m just looking for more lyric creativity and not to feel annoyed by what I’m listening to. At times it just feels like a record broke and they left that in the album. Finished the album and feel the same way at the end lol, not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but definitely not good either.
It's a vibe. I mean that both as a positive and negative. Positive because it's fun, enjoyable, and has some addictive grooves. Negative because it's repetitive and has little distinction as it goes-- it just kinda persists. I think the album runs way too long for what it is. Not sure I need to listen to it for an hour+. That said, I probably would enjoy it more in much smaller doses. There are a number of songs on here that I like, including some I knew and already liked. I don't think they were stronger in the context of the album, but work well on their own. Some new ones (to me) were also good, but again didn't really gain much from listening to the album as a whole. There wasn't anything that I particularly disliked beyond just getting a bit tired of it by the end. Considering it in full, this isn't something I'd consider a great album. I think it has a lot of staying power, and it stands out considering that came out in the 90s. The songs retain listenability. Even so, considering it as a whole makes it seem less impressive; it's basically just fine when you listen to it through. It's probably a situation where, if this style of music is your vibe, you'll love it. But if not, you won't be all that moved. I fall into the latter category. Overall: 2.3/5
Fucking in Heaven, Gangster Trippin and Praise You are the only good songs on this album per my taste. It’s a little too techno for me.
I could never really get into Fatboy Slim, which is surprising cos I really enjoy a lot of similar stuff (The Crystal Method, Aphex Twin). I can't put my finger on why it doesn't resonate with me, but it mostly doesn't. Favorite track: Gangster Trippin
*1998. English dance/electronic. *Rockafeller Skank and Praise You are the only songs I knew, and definitely the most interesting. *House/DJ music. *Most of the songs are long and repetitive, but I guess that's the point. *It's fine, but I wouldn't revisit. RATING - 6/10
I don’t know who electronic music is for. I get annoyed with the same sound every 10seconds for 6 min. Whats saving this album from a 1 star is praise you. It’s great.
Hey man we need you to soundtrack this 90s teen comedy/hacker movie from the late 90s/early 2000s. You got anything for us?
I didn't like this as much as I did as a kid. I still liked the first track again.
eh. not my thing
I am just not a fan of this style. It is too repetitive for me and goes nowhere. There are some HITS here that I didn't know were by Fatboy Slim, but overall this is fine. I have heard "Right Here, Right Now" at every Pens Game during the pregame show and had no idea this is who that was by. I just wish the songs were shorter or they developed into something more. The top songs are great tho and the transition from "Right Here, Right Now" into "The Rockafeller Skank" is so fun. Actual rating is 2.5. Liked Songs: "Right Here, Right Now" , "The Rockafeller Skank" , "Gangster Trippin" , "Soul Surfing" , "You're Not From Brighton" , "Praise You"
I guess it was ok on the dance floor in the nineties, but to listen to it today not so much.
amazing lyrics not found
no me gusta
As far as, electronica, trip-hop, techno-pop goes, I'm sure this is a great record. It is not my thing. Each song becomes tedious until they finally end. I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.
probably not the kind of album to just throw on and listen to with headphones. pretty annoying stuff.
Mind numbingly repetitive
The songs are varied, but too long since the lyrics repeat too much.
Never was a fan of Fatboy Slim- seemed like a commercial version of the great electronic or DJs of the era. Give me DJ Shadow, Land of the Loops, A Guy Called Gerald, or any/all of the Trip Hop artists instead.
CHECK IT OUT NOW FUNK SOUL BROTHA
I’m sure it was creative when it was released, but has not aged well in my opinion.
Meh
The album feels very electro-hiphop-y. Not my cup of tea
Eh.
Not my cuppa, iconic album though. Praise You will always go hard.
Some catchy grooves that, unfortunately, draaaaaaaagggggg oooooooonnnnnnn. Way too repetitive.
Almost engaging to me, I would be fine with this playing in the background of a bootleg jet set radio game.
Electronica is not my genre, but I do like Praise You. The Rockefeller Skank is a quintessentially 90s track. It could exist in no other time, and I kinda love it for that, despite not actually wanting to listen to it.
A bit repetitive and not really my style of music. Not enough to make me want to listen to it more than once (probably not helped by how popular the big singles were from the album in the late 90s).
Just didn’t care sorry
This album can be really annoying and repetitive. I never really cared for electronic or house music and this album was one of a few reasons why. Most of the songs are a beat with the lyrics just repeating over and over again. I just never wanna listen to In Heaven ever again. It's like when a kid curses for the first time and never stops like dropping the F-Bomb in a song is not edgy to the point where it has to be dropped on repeat bro. But you know what, Praise You is a great song though. That's all I'll say that is good about this album. Favorite Tracks: Right Here Right Now, Praise You Rating: 2/5
Oh brother another one of this guy. How? So repetitive, explicit to no gravity or reason, sophomoric. This guy stinks.
I have to agree with the majority of the reviews. Too repetitive. I was surprised that I knew two songs though. That is the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one.
I read the reviews about it being very repetitive. I didn’t believe them. Believe them.
Not the worst, not my favorite. I loved the singles when they were released, wasn't much into the rest of the album. Not much has changed.
Not a huge fan, found it somewhat repetitive, my favourite song though was by far Soul Surfing. Final Ranking: Lyrics: 4/10 Instrumentals: 4/10 Originality: 3/10 Album Flow/Cohesion: 3/10 Vocals: 3/10 Didn't really enjoy it but I understand it is a significant album. Not my style and too repetitive.
Some catchy cool beats but it’s soooo repetitive… soooo repetitive
Kinda fun, but the repetition wore on me after a while. Still, I can see exactly why it blew up. Big, cheeky, and built for late-90s parties and festivals. A cultural moment, even if not one I’d revisit often.
I've heard the hits, everyone has. I was kind of curious to see how it will sound. A Lot of it sounds the same. 808 beats, samples.. some hooks. I mean, its good but its very a like.
Some 'bangers' on here but I find repetition really fucking irritiating, which is a massive problem when listening to this. Which are ya boy, fat or slim?!
This was the first album I ever bought! My mum was not happy that it had a song called 'Fucking in Heaven' on it but I was so innocent that I didn't know why it was bad beyond having a swear word in it. It was a nostalgic listen and interesting hearing it again now I can parse how it was constructed after decades of listening to music since I first heard it, BUT (and it's a big but) it's pretty dull overall tbh
not my style
Wheeeeeel never checked this. Its ok, kinda boring though, Slim’s style is nice but I get tired of it quickly. Still one of the better things this horrible list has recommended me though, overall boring experience.
mehhh
This album was…certainly something. The opening moments are pretty good, but like most songs on this album, it goes on too long. The only songs that I feel don’t go on too long are In Heaven and Praise You, which are also my favorites on the record. There was a section of this album in the middle where I wanted nothing more than for it to end. This lasted about 15 minutes, but Praise You swooped in to save the day. This album was meant to have individual songs played at parties and in clubs, not a full listen through. I honestly have no clue why it’s on this list. That being said, there are a few interesting moments. 2/5
No
Praise you was the only song I knew and liked. The rest sounded like it was a long outro song to the 90s.
Kind of pseudo-edm or like hip hop without the rap. Not really my thing.
Every song should be 50% shorter
Best listened to while doing other things.
the origin of dj-ing some classics there czuc ze stare niektore juz sluchalne
V repetitive, not for me
Nicht mein Stil
Like getting stuck talking to Colin from Accounts at a work networking conference. I attended out of politeness but found it boring and tiresome and couldn't wait to get away.
At least once a week, every week, I log on to see that a 90s British electronica album has been generated for me. They're all an hour-long, they're all filled with vocal loops consisting of like five words, and they're always the absolute lowpoint of my week. Please, I beg you, no more!
just found out fatboy slim isn’t fat and is english. so all that feels wrong
meh
Pretty r-repetitive I'd sa-sa-say. Tho it's a nice album. Prolly an average 2.50-3.00
Good fun. Not something to listen to a lot though imo. Too repetitive as I'm sure others have said
Hmm, gematig gevoel. Echt wel viben af en toe en back to the 90s. Maar ook wel dooge ergerd. Zou zeggen 2.5 maar vind 3 echt teveel. Wordt een 2 tje dus.
Some bangers on here, but also the songs are incredibly long. Not sure if I could do this whole album back to back again.
Not a big fan of the repetitive beats. Meh.
Classic but looon ggggggggg
Meh
This feels like meme music - but when it was released was likely not the case. The songs / style are not for me - especially with the repetitive phrasing or lyrics. While the album art is iconic and the Parental Guidance logo is nostalgic, the music is not my preference. The song Praise You almost feels like an outlier from the overall sound, but a favorite.
It’s not terrible it’s pretty cool I just don’t fw this kind of music at all
Praise you goated, rest of album quite mid
not my cup of tea personally
Dated sound. Few ok tunes but overall poor
Bullshit. The music is not bad but 2 points less considering the guy is a complete jerk in real life. Fuck you, entitled piece of shit.
If every song was shorter, and F*cking in Heaven was removed, I might have enjoyed this. It was a tough listen with a couple of highlights.
I'm not prude, but the swearing was distracting. Not arty, not holistic, just like someone farted. Constantly.
Some iconic and fun singles (who doesn’t like Praise You?), but it’s not something that draws me in.
I'm not sure about this album.
A mixed bag. The singles still feel strong, Fucking in Heaven felt like a lad culture throwback, and then the others were between fun and forgettable. Love Island and Acid 8000 were pleasant surprises near the end.
This album came out when I was 16; a lot of people at school loved it; I the contrarian, therefore thought it was naff. My assumption was going into this listen that nostalgia would override my anti-Ibiza alcopop snobbery... this didn't really play out. I liked a lot of what was going on: Build it Up, Tear It Down and Soul Surfing are great. Love Island is an absolute banger. There are loads of great samples and layering, but it's also crass and a bit lightweight in places; the big hit singles can stay at the foam parties with the WKD.
To anyone under the age of 30. It’s probably hard to understand how big these songs were on release. An era where every dance song had to have a drop. It can be a bit tiring though when the same song has 3 drops. As can the over use of the same vocal sample “what we doin when the fat boy slippin’” “ right about now, with the funk soul brutha”. This was absolutely giving the masses what they wanted at the time. Thankfully the samples (sampling) is strong, as is the source material. Praise You is probably the pick of the bunch. If follows the same formula as the rest, but the main sample is extended allowing the song to breath. You’re not from Brighton / Love Island and Acid 8000 follow a different pattern influenced by the rave era. Only the last of those is strong though. I expected to enjoy this more. 2/5
I like the hits but it sounds dated and kind of annoying in anything but a small dose.
Annoying. 2/5 just for Right Here Right Now and Praise You, but they're still annoying though.
This album could be twenty minutes long and nothing would be lost. It’s not terrible, but it’s dull and incredibly repetitive. Its only strength lies in the quality of a handful of the samples, and that’s not enough for me to like this. It does bring back memories of clubbing at university though - Norman Cook was omnipresent in the late 90s, and some of this music really soundtracked my mid twenties so it’s not all bad.
LOL everyone on the planet knows Right Here Right Now. Fucking in Heaven is terrible. So repetitive. Repetitive. Repetitive. Soul Surfing just started and I am impatiently waiting for this album to be over.
This album has not aged well. I found it jarring and distracting rather than enjoyable
Epitome of 2000s dj music. Was ok
Ingenious? No. Unique? Somewhat. Too Long? Yes.
Ever since he debuted in the ‘90s, I have never been a fan of FBS. Figuring maybe decades later I’d change my mind, but I can say I stay firm in my stance. Electronic music just hits or it doesn’t for me, and when it is this repetitive with audio clips and such, I just find myself getting irritated as shit. I made it through most of the album, but eventually had to hit stop to save my sanity.
Strange mix of songs that I love and songs that I hate. Lot more that I didn't enjoy however.
The problem with repetitive music like this is if it's not done perfectly it's really annoying. There are a couple obvious boppers in here, but altogether I found the album obnoxious. He made some really catchy loops, but a four second loop for six straight minutes will get pretty annoying no matter what.
Quite the obsession with the “F” word.
Long album for sure. Not necessarily for me, but still had interesting moments. Definitely moments where the album ran long in my opinion. 5.1/10
Fav: ayeyaiyai, they all seem so pretentious. Praise You is probably the most listenable.
I remember hearing some of these, but I'm just not a fan of this genre. It is nice to know that it is "the funk soul brother" and not "the funk's so rubber" even though it still doesn't make sense.
I’m sure what is being produced is very innovative, seems to be an interesting story behind it. Not really what I’m interested in, samples of samples of samples.
Very familiar with this album and while I love electronic music, this gets a little tedious. Fat Boy Slim uses the same trick over and over throughout the album. Very formulaic.
As a sweet soul brother of several years, I was dismayed to learn that this album was, in fact, a funk soul brother's album. I have never felt such discrimination in my life. I'm vaguely familiar with this album and artist. Me pappy played "Praise You" once and I've heard some of the other songs on this album through the radio. The Jet Set Radio soundtrack was the first-ever body of music that I listened to of my own accord, so I also have fond memories of the "big beat" genre. All this to say that "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" should have appealed to me much more than it actually did. I'm not entirely sure what the Jet Set Radio soundtrack has which this album lacks aside from a greater level of variety. Many of these songs feel "flat" to me, which is a criticism that is very hard to articulate. There's a lack of fidelity. The electronic tones don't have any depth. The music inches along at a snail's pace and moves at a near-constant tempo. Uhh, moving on. There are some good moments. The looping on Gangster Trippin as well as a few other songs works well when the samples quickly repeat at the many climactic moments of the album. "Right Here, Right Now" is also good - my favourite song on the album. String instruments continue to be my music-listening soft spot and the layered, percussion-heavy sound is very good. My biggest gripe is that this album is long long loooooooooong. I can respect this album for having a strong enough identity to do it's own thing for an hour straight, though I really need something to break the pace when I'm listening to an album which is of a constant high-energy. All of these songs being 5+ minutes is also a real dealbreaker. To me, the appeal of sample-heavy music rests in the ability to harness and retool a vast array of sounds, not the same pool of noises being repeated for longer than they're welcome. This musical style is very unique, of-the-time and worthy of immortalisation within the book, though I'm still curious to see the exact reasons of inclusion. Let's see. "Exceedingly immature". A figurehead of the late-90s resurgence in club music. Multiplatinum seller. An alternative to the drug-fuelled haze of house music. A classic within big beat music. I figured there'd be more to this album other than selling well and becoming a classic within it's genre, though these are good enough reasons for me.
By some coincidence I had an early housemate in Roxbury in the late 1990s who was a huge Housemartins fan. Still not sure why this was the case, he was otherwise into American indie, britpop, but especially swing music. Like BIG TIME into the swing scene, went to dance nights in Manhattan during the week, was in videos and photo shoots for I can’t remember. Anyhow, speaking of 1990s trends, big beat, eh? I always find it peculiar what gets left out of the 90s post-mortems, like the whole decade ended in April 1994 or when Bush had their first hit or whatever. Meanwhile, “music” was moving forward on its own with and without the help of the business. 1997 was supposed to be The Year, if not summer of Electronica - Dig Your Own Hole and especially Fat of the Land - but the sound did not cross over, at least, not as was planned. Instead, the next and following years, this rando Brit DJ pulled together a set of novelty “techno” songs and kaboom. None of this really ever clicked for me, it’s so close to being sublime, next-level stuff, but Cook stays in his lane. Which apparently was a very profitable one, jeezus. The best example, aside from the general sense “Praise You” is missing that little something extra but keeps it safe for 1000s of ad breaks to come, is the breakdown of “Rockafeller Skank”: as the vocal sample speeds up and the (big) beat drops out it starts taking on a rhythm of its own which then just...folds back into surf rock basis of the song. A better artist would’ve seized that and gone off in a different direction - Daft Punk created an entire set around this idea - but Cook is ultimately very staid, very predictable, focused on colouring inside the lines.
Repetition is only good when something bears repeating. Loops for loops’ sake. A great start then leads to getting lost in a succession of boring middle songs before Praise You saved me a bit toward the end. Mercifully little more to listen to after that. I’m sure I could bop to it with the right paraphernalia but it doesn’t lend itself to a quiet weekday evening listen.
3/10 neću ponovo slušati
It’s a dance record with lots of samples going on. Not my cup of tea in any way shape or form. I made it through one listen but at the halfway point I was checking to see if it was almost done. Nothing I would listen to again.
Started well and then it went down. It’s just not my kind of music.
Not for me at all. But I could understand why someone would like it 5/10
Good album but it got repetitive for me.
Bester: Praise You Schlechtester: Acid 8000
A 1-minute blast of FBS can be quite exciting. Perfect soundtrack to advertise your affordable hatchback. 5-mins is usually a fairly interesting listen (sample spotting, intriguing production, fun times etc.). 10 mins is getting wearing. Half an hour is way too much. What's that? Another big buildup and breakdown you say? Another frantic 16/4 drum climax? A full album? Utter overdose 💀
2/5 One point for "Right Here, Right Now" and one point for "Praise You." Really repetitive. Like, REALLY repetitive. Not bad if you just wanna dance in a club or something, but to listen to for enjoyment? It's not it.
IM GOING INSANE AAAAAAAAAAAGH
Repetitive certainly
I never could get into Fat Boy Slim
This was fun for a bit, but I was kind of ready to rip my hair out after an hour of it. I can completely understand being at a rave, but this doesn’t really work at home for me. Not that I like raves, either. Once again, another electronica album that’s not for me.
I find it very irritating but could be a vibe at a skatepark I guess
this would be more enjoyable if each song was like a third of the length
Ok, not my kind of music. Partly not so boring, but mostly didn't like it. And ... this is - in my opinion - not music to listen to at home - this is only fun when dancing
Too much audio fuckery 2/5
1. nouu - 1.5 2. zkank - 1.5 3. heaven - 1.5 4. trippin - 1 5. douun - 1.5 6. california - 1 7. zoul - 1.5 8. brighton - 1.5 9. praize - 1 10. love - 1.5 11. acid - 1.5
Long and repetitive. Standout song Build it up tear it down.
It was fine. Nothing really memorable. Don't think it belongs here if I'm being completely honest. 2/5
interesting
Not for me. Too many high pitched electronic noises
Your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move, your booty move. -Atom 8000
Not for me, but I can see how others would enjoy it.
This is most likely my favorite Beck album and also generally one of my favorites overall. Every song is memorable.
I liked that one song that was everywhere off this album ("Rockefeller Skank") but never had any desire to explore further, just not a genre I am into. Of course I've heard that "Right Here, Right Now" song about a billion times in commercials and at sporting events but I never knew that was Fatboy Slim. I did know "Praise You" was them. This album had some bangers, as the kids say. In the middle I got tired of it though - "Build It Up - Tear It Down," "Kalifornia," and "Soul Surfing" just annoyed me and the repetitive crap is why I don't like this genre. Ben used to listen to it constantly and I just didn't get it. But I'm sure it was great in the clubs, where I wouldn't be caught dead.
Most of the songs are not that exciting.
++*: Praise You ++: Fucking in Heaven, Soul Surfing +: Gangster Tripping, Build It Up – Tear It Down, You're Not from Brighton +-: Right Here, Right Now, The Rockafeller Skank, Kalifornia -: Love Island, Acid 8000 4,9/10
I remember the hype about this album. I don't mind a bit of sampling and looping but this has the feeling of someone experimenting with a new technology for the first time and people liking it just because it's novel. I find the first 30 seconds of each track is ok, bit of a groove, 3 mins later I'm bored stiff from hearing the same looped rhythm and lyric samples for the thousandth time. This album might have seemed fresh and interesting once but I don't hear any long term musical merit and I don't think it will stand the test of time.
Tedious, repetitive. There are maybe a few tracks that are okay. It's the kind of music that I might put on if the purpose isn't to listen to music, but rather while I'm doing something else; Playing a game (that doesn't have a good soundtrack). Cleaning the house. Doing laundry. Whatever...
I did not enjoy this album, and I don't know how anybody could. The exception being Praise You, I think this actually belongs on a list of albums to avoid listening to because it could result in your death. 2
2/5 Not as great as i remember, Except rockafeller skank, the rest of the album is abit boring.
2 out of 5. Another album I had no idea had so many famous songs on it.
I've never attended a rave. I don't know the difference between house and dub-step. This album is definitely too long. I was a conscious person in America in 1998, so "Rockefeller Skank" has been burned into my brain (although not the extended album version; just the radio edit). All that said, I somehow still enjoyed some of this. Is this what Throbbing Gristle aspired to? It was ultimately too repetitive to get to a 3, but it was close. 2.4
These jams are way too long. A product of the CD era though. “We must fill the entirety of a 74 minute CD!” Just gets boring after a while. Everything is of a similar tempo. I wonder how many club kids from that time still enjoy this album. I feel like it probably doesn’t hold up
One of the better electronica albums I've heard, but listening to it gave me a headache
6/10 Highlights: The Rockafeller Skank Praise You
5,5/10 Highlights Rockefeller Skank Praise You
Overall: 3/10 This is music for commercials. But also RIGHT ABOUT NOW THE FUNK SOUL BROTHER CHECK IT OUT NOW Fav Song: The Rockefeller Skank Least Fav Song: Kalifornia
Man I hadn't thought about this album in a long time. And that's ok. I feel like I don't need this record taking up any space in my brain. Not a fan of electronic music in general and this is pretty much right down the middle for the genre and the time. Just the repetitiveness of this is enough to turn anyone off. I seem to remember there being a lot of car commercials that used songs from this album. Or maybe that's just how it sounds. Anyway, not a fan. A generous 2/5
Built some decent beats and then just repeats the hell out of them lyric/vocals are just stupid. Debated between a 1 or a 2 but the beats are generally solid.
Club beats aren’t really my thing, and this isn’t quite close enough to club beats that I’d enjoy anyway.
A wonderful record for making commercials.
This is enjoyable enough, in fast-casual dining chain sort of way – very large portions, smothered in sauce, and very much wants to be everything to everybody, but quite unhealthy to consume very often. Bottome line: big beat is just for stupid people with dodgy tastes and taking off extra points for so blatantly name-dropping and propping himself on the second cut with radio call-in sample.
Fatboy Slim - You've Come a Long Way, Baby At least there are some enjoyable moments here and there, and it is quite fun to listen to, but the music sounds all over the place. One thing goes after the other quickly, it's confusing to listen to this all together. Even though each song does transition to the next, personally it works best in shuffle honestly. It sounds kind of good, but there are other artists that did this better than him, to be honest this is decent. 1.- Right Here, Right Now = 8/10 2.- The Rockafeller Skank = 8/10 3.- Fucking In Heaven = 4/10 4.- Gangster Trippin' = 6/10 5.- Build It Up - Tear It Down = 5/10 6.- Kalifornia = 4/10 7.- Soul Surfing = 4/10 8.- You're Not From Brighton = 4/10 9.- Praise You = 9/10 10.- Love Island = 6/10 11.- Acid 8000 = 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 6/10
medio pe. Praise you es un temon igual
🎧Here Fatboy Slim answers the age old question, “if cocaine was an album, what album would it be?” Praise You is terrific though.
The individual songs are all fine, but as the whole the album becomes a little tiring and tedious to listen to.
I guess you had to be there
Well done, but too repetitive for me.
"Right Here, Right Now," "The Rockafeller Skank," and "Praise You" all have some good stuff going on but overall the album is kind of obnoxious. It dethrones Orbital 2 by Orbital as my least favorite techno album on the list.
Brand new genre of music for me.
2.5 This music should be listened to in the club and i don't go to the club :(
Techno is another genre of music that I’m not well versed in. As such, the best I can say for this album is it’s ok. I don’t dislike it, but it also didn’t strike me in any kind of way. I will say that I’ve listened to some Chemical Brothers stuff that I find more appealing. But I don’t know how to really verbalize the differences, or even what they’re called. So this album was fine, but nothing that I would necessarily come back to either.
I'd listen to this occasionally, perhaps while working or exercising.
Hard to listen to in one sitting- moments of funky edm, but mostly just annoying. Praise You is the most listenable track. Not a fan of the genre, clearly. Why does it sound like the dentist's drill?
Several songs on this album that are decent, or even pretty good, in isolation. As a whole-album experience it bored the crap out of me. Much too much repetition. Just not my bag.
5/10
There are definitely good parts of this, but it’s absolute torture to have to listen to an hour straight of this. Nothing but samples
It sounds like an evolutionary step in music. Boxy 90s hip hop beats, overly repetitive songs that are about twice as long as they need to be, and a paint-by-numbers approach to creating some sort of structure. Praise You is far and away the strongest song, largely due to having lyrics longer than four words. The beats are good, but it’s far too much for an album.
While more tolerable than a lot of electronica on this list I’ve encountered thus far, still very skippable. I vaguely remember a lot of this from listening to it on my Walkman riding the bus to school in 1998 when I was an equally annoying middle schooler. Half a star added for being a Seagulls supporter.
This is enjoyable enough, in a chain-restaurant or all-you-can-eat-buffett sort of way – very large portions, smothered in sauce and extras, but quite unhealthy to consume very often and attracting all the wrong sorts of people. The occasional earworms are way overplayed and the name-dropping and propping himself on the second cut with radio call-in sample is worth a full-point penalty. Big beat is clear evidence that more isn't more.
Not really my thing but I recognize it's full of what were considered to be 90s electro-pop bangers. Tip of the hat to this album.
[vocal sample with drum beat] FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT [dramatic music sample] FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT [middle 8] FAAATBOOOY SLIIIM IIIS SHIIIT FATFATFAT BOYBOYBOYBOY SLIMIS SLIMIS SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT [new dramatic music sample] FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT FATBOY SLIM IS SHIT
Oh good lord. I mean, okay. The instrumentals was nice and I really did enjoy listening to it at some certain points. But the lyrics are downright annoying and VERY repetitive, like do I need to listen to this guy saying the same thing for the 30th time in a song? Probably not. This could be a good album to dance to tho, I'll give it that. When you kinda tune out the lyrics and mostly jive to good beats. 2/5
Rounding up to differentiate from all the other English DJs. On a curve with the others this is probably like a 7⭐️. At least it sometimes kinda goes somewhere.
A bunch of long electronica loops. No real lyrics. Would actually be pretty good if there were Beastie Boys dropping some rhymes over the music. As it stands, though, the novelty of the music wears out quick.
might have felt revolutionary at its time, but the vocal sampling now feels repetitive at best, incredibly annoying (Fatboy Slim! Fatboy Slim!) at worst
The first two songs I was bumping but it immediately overstayed it's welcome. Every song is extremely repetitive, if I was at a club or something it would be fine but I'm at my cubicle in my office and it's painful. First two songs were electric though
weird. didn't like it much. maybe not my thing...
Way too repetitive for actively listening to, I’m sure if you like EDM or dubstep this would be enjoyable
A couple of times it was pretty good but some other times it was pretty annoying.
Too long.
Truly one of the albums of all time
