Reviews (page 5 of 14)

The first six Talking Heads studio albums are all timeless classic albums (5*). This is number 4 so five stars. (Might be their most celebrated work, but I would not say that it stands out.)

My favourite Talking Heads album. It is all about the rhythms and musical arrangement, keeping other aspects like the chord progressions and song structure simple. Catch the groove, or you're lost.

My expectations were low since I could not really appreciate the previous Talking Heads albums from the list. However, for some reason Remain in Light did grab me. I played it various times and enjoyed it more and more. How can that be explained? Well, I'm really not sure. This one appears a little lighter and more joyous. Byrne's vocals, which I cannot stand for the most part, are less prominent; there are more harmonies instead. The album is overall very coherent. There are striking sounds, such as the guitar in The Great Curve and the horn in Houses in Motion. There is genuine beauty in Listening Wind. There is (by accident?) a catchy single with Once in a Lifetime (on which I even like Byrne's barking). What more could one wish?

issa classic

Talking heads’ masterpiece, one of the best albums of the 80’s

Around the world in 120 beats per minute.

Easily one of the best of all Time. Big Big Love

Great album! I recently started listening to more Talking Heads and have become a big fan. Their "Stop Making Sense (Live)" album is a masterpiece.

Big fan, so hard not to enjoy.

Classic 9-10/10

The world moves on a woman's hips The world moves and it swivels and bops The world moves on a woman's hips The world moves and it bounces and hops While I'm surprised and a little disconcerted about the choices of the three Talking Heads albums in the 1001 (no Fear Of Music?!), this is one that I would not dispute.

Great album but not my favorite talking heads

Anyone who knows me knows how I never shut up about Talking Heads. Want to come over to my place? Ok, we’ll you’re going to have to stay up and watch Stop Making Sense with me. Those are the rules. With that in mind, I couldn’t contain my excitement when this popped up today. I’ll take any excuse to listen to this masterpiece. When the album opens with David Byrne’s scream, you just know it’s going to be an energetic ride. I could go on and on, but I’m just going to enjoy!

Little weak towards the end. Still 4.5. Featuring one of the greatest songs of all time.

Probably my favorite Talking Heads album and to me the one they reached there Zenith.

Another great album by the Talking Heads. And another one that I immensely enjoyed. Some of the African beats are a bit weird on first listen but they really work.

Facts are simple and facts are straight Facts are lazy and facts are late Facts all come with points of view Facts don't do what I want them to Facts just twist the truth around Facts are living turned inside out Facts are getting the best of them Facts are nothing on the face of things One of the greatest albums of all time. 5/5

Lots of weird textures and flavors, interesting throughout Frenetic and nervous Makes me want to go listen to Discipline by King Crimson

An all timer. A dense, energetic, and witty record packed with personality. So many ways to approach this record from a listening standpoint; almost all of the songs have a polyrhythmic composition, with the only song that doesn't being the lumbering closer "The Overload," which still has the band enacting their take on Joy Division's cold and bassy structures. "The Great Curve" is almost sensory overload...there's so much going on by the final minute that it is perplexing how the onslaught of rhythms courses through you and yet functions cohesively. And with this being from the mind of David Byrne, you can expect a plethora of innovative, clever, and groovy musical/lyrical passages on the entire record. Perfection.

Such a great band. Super creative and weird. The rhythmic layering is awesome. So many influences and weird qualities all coming together.

A solid 5 out of 5, even though it isn’t my favorite Talking Heads album.

A band by 1980 so far ahead of their time it would take others several years to catch up. Funk, rap, afrobeats all in a sonic stew anchored by Weymouth and Frantz - surely contenders for one of the best rhythm sections of all time. Though The Overload sees a very slight lessening of the quality, it's 4.75 stars. I've had an earlier TH album ten days ago on the randomizer - assuming from this that pretty well every album up to Little Creatures will come up at some point.

Excellent through and through. I’ll never rate Talking Heads anything less than 5 stars, I just fucking love them and David Byrne so much. It’s the music that speaks to my soul, that resonates deeply with my own being in such a spectacular way that I can’t rate this critically, only effusively and passionately. I’ll love Talking Heads until the day I die.

Stupendous. 5 stars.

On of Talking Heads great albums and also noted as one of the great albums of all time for it's innovative sound.

Peerless.

- Very cool - Most fleshed out album - 9.5/10

BANGER

Oh David Bryne and Brian Eno. Underrated (at least Eno is) GOAT's of music. An absolute classic on this album with 'Once In a Lifetime' and other incredable lesser talked about songs like 'Born Under Punches' and great 'The Great Curve'. So good, always a treat to listen to (I claim to be) Scottish music Legend. 9/10

Legendary

Amazing album! I've heard the hits but never the whole album. This is so good!

Very fucking amazing

This might be biased but this was delightful and wonderful. Kinda wavy

Nervous and revolutionary. It makes for uncomfortable listening in the best way. The 1st half is the beat to a perfect frenzy, the 2nd half is introspective and eye opening. I can’t rate this highly enough. Beyond 5 Stars.

It's the funkiest Talking Heads record. Though not as funky as the Tom Tom Club. But it's advantage over that is David Byrne's lyrics at their most esoteric and frantic. In short it's magnificent. Once In A Lifetime, and Crosseyed and Painless are both near perfect

A great LP by a fantastic band.

Perfect from top to bottom.

Amidst the early stages of rap, who knew that the worlds first album essentially created using samples would come from a bunch of very academic, very white, new wave pioneers? And through this very academic approach, Byrne and Co. managed to create a record that unlike any other resembles a stream of consciousness. Remain In Light truly is a unique piece of art and deserves all praise it has gotten. Off the bat with 'Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)' you know something special is going on. Every track is remarkable with 'Once in a Lifetime' of course grabbing a lot of the attention. But come on; the lyrics on 'Seen and Not Seen', the spoken words on 'Houses in Motion', the entire thing that is 'Listening Wind'. Just wow. I could go on for days. I think it's pretty safe to say that without this record, there would have been no Graceland by Mr. Paul Simon. Oh, and good luck trying to find a chord progression in this thing

How does an album with this amount of repetition sound this varied? It’s like it’s never standing still! Everything on Remain In Light is just peak innovation and creativity. Talking Heads was already one of America’s most interesting rock bands. This is just showing off. Byrne delivers career highlights in almost every song while Frantz’ pulsating drumming breathes live into every second of runtime. Peak lyricism, peak new wave, peak post-punk, peak dancable rock (side one at least), peak Talking Heads. Remain In Light is simply peak music.

It's a classic. Once in A Lifetime is the most famous song here (for good reason) but there's plenty more here to enjoy. Just awesome from beginning to end.

This album is so cool and unique. Listening to it, I can't help but wish I had been older in 1980 and able to appreciate it when it came out. Oh, to have been conscious of the music scene at that point! It must have been so exciting and different. This album sounds like nothing else recorded, either before or after. According to Wikipedia, David Byrne and Brian Eno were influenced by Fela Kuti and African music, which makes sense - the rhythms are unusual and there is a rambling feel to the vocal melodies that definitely reminds me of Fela. (Of course, Fela was influenced by jazz and funk!) Super unique and cool. Could listen to it over and over and still discover new depths. 5/5

"And you may tell yourself, this is not my beautiful new wave And you may tell yourself, this is not my beautiful afrobeat"

Once in a lifetime, you may find yourself listening to this album. I hope you do.

Talking heads should be in more top like this ! Awesome album.

A unique sound that will probably never happen again. An album that encourages our body to dance against a background of new-wave that embraces Afrobeat, but locks our head in a secluded closet to anguish and paranoid. Like... What the hell is going on? Brilliant and groundbreaking album, no doubt.

Spotify defaults to the deluxe version, which is a shame. At the original 40 minute running time, this is a perfect album.

Required listening. Always rewarding.

How can you blame them for ripping off Fela Kuti when it made for their best album?

One of my favourite albums of all time

Great album, but I already knew that. I'd listened to this album a lot last year. 4.5/5

In more than 40 years this record feels like it dindn't age a second: it's still innovative and brilliant nowadays. An absolute masterpiece by one of the most talented and influential bands in the history of music.

Fun, unique!

I’d heard two of the songs before but never the rest. Definitely listening to it again, highlight “the great curve”

I love this record so much. So many cool rhythmic layers and really cool tones and textures. I love all the funky rhythm guitar and percussion. These grooves are so great. I love all the unconventional solos that are super colorful and expressive. The lyrics are great and fit the music perfectly. One of my favorites albums -Also love the Angelique Kidjo version and the Stop Making Sense concert.

Love this record! David Byrnes has such an interesting approach to songwriting and art, and I’m a fan of the stuff he did with Brian Eno. I like the afrobeat inspired vibe on this record, some really interesting guitar parts.

Top 5 album ever made for me

Good good good good shit. This is everything they were building towards in their early work, fully realized. I see why this album is so highly praised and so iconic.

I think this is a real testament to Brian Eno. The soundscapes on this are just iconic and very complimentary to the Talking Heads sound.

Totally solid album from talking heads. Clearly a band whomlobed music, lobes to experiment with music and had great vision

Talking Heads are........a difficult band. Intelligent pop that speaks to you but without round edges and without warmth. There's much to admire and nothing to love here? Still, this album is a treasure.

Darn infectious grooves. Kind of like Michael Jackson’s songs where every instrument track is a catchy hook. Laudable for kickstarting Phish’s cow funk era. Knausgaard has a good vignette about listening to this album in Dancing in the Dark. A very inspirational album for artists of all sorts. The heat goes on. Same as it ever was.

5/5. An awesome album that has back to back bangers. Although not all songs are the best songs in the world, the first half of the album really makes it amazing. The second half is a lot darker but still great.

great!

Incredible, amazing, exhilarating. One of their best.

One of my favourite pieces of music ever, something to love forever.

Best album from one of the greatest bands ever.

Favorite song: Seen and Not Seen Upon re-listen - Born Under Punches may be my favorite song. What an opening.

Really interesting and I should listen to it properly again.

I’m so glad to have grown to appreciate the genius of Talking Heads… great album!

When someone ever asks you "What the hell is New Wave?", you go ahead and hand them this album. It's that simple.

Looping rhythms in an industrial punk funk factory from 1980 with David Byrne narrating from a bird’s eye view over culture and the everyday mundaneness of living. 9.1/10

So good!

bueno, pa repetir

Favorite Songs: Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), Houses In Motion, Crosseyed And Painless, Once In A Lifetime, The Great Curve, Listening Wind Least Favorite Songs: N/A One of the greatest albums ever made. I've listened to alot of Art-Rock albums. Alternative albums. Pop albums. Funk albums. Proto-Punk albums. World albums. Atmospheric albums. This album is not just those things perfected, but recaptured and contextualized. Add odd-time signature African beats, general radio hit appeal, and sharp writing; And you get some of the most accessible experimental music ever made. Political, loving, and kind more than most you'll listen to.

This is such a fucking fantastic album.

Odd to find a band that both me and my teenage son enjoy. Gotta give this one a five

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Freaking amazing

Not my favourite Talking Heads, but it's still a classic.

one of the greatest to ever do it Seen and Not Seen ruins me

me mato por este álbum

Loooooved it

Amazing

I’ll give this my first 5/5, not a single lowpoint on the entire album. It just feels so creative for it’s time and i’m in love with sound and vibe this whole album has (though i understand why it may not be everyones cup of tea). Hard to choose the best tracks but i’d probably go with The great curve and Listening wind

Second repeat artist in one week, and I’ve rated fewer than 50 albums total. Interesting how the algorithm works sometimes. That said, the first time I got a Talking Heads album, it was my introduction to the band, and it’s easily the best thing I’ve discovered on this journey thus far. I was pretty happy to see another Talking Heads album this morning. I loved it and will definitely be adding it to my phone. Oh, and thanks to the generator for giving me Fear of Music, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and this in their proper chronological order. Nice it worked out like that!

Amazing album by an amazing band. Legendary.

This is dope 5

Wow. The rhythm section here is unbelievable. “Crosseyed and Painless” and “The Great Curve” in particular are stunning. Just relentless in their energy. Amazing. The whole album is solid and it has “Once in a Lifetime,” which I’ve heard a million times before but still sounds fresh.

Same as it ever was. Prefs: TOUT Moins pref: RIEN

I Zimbra from Fear of Music was the first step towards the band's next level and set the tone for what was possible. Remain in Light delivered this next level. The quality falls on the last half of Side 2 but the rest is magical. Adrian Belou delivers wonderful licks

It’s always great to get an album you don’t need to listen to (again) to review. The three albums leading to this one gave hints that they might move in this direction, but when they did, they went so all-in, it was a shocker. I bet a lot of the ‘new wave’ bands at that time were thinking much more out-of-the-box when they went back into the studio after hearing this. The problem with such a masterpiece is that there was nowhere to go after.

Oh FUCK I love this album

Genius album with brilliant crazy energy.

Boppity bops

One of the all time greats

I used to get super high at my college job in the mall selling hats and t shirts and listen to this album. This album takes you to a pretty unusual mental state.

Ten out of Ten. Twenty out of Twenty.

The Talking Heads are way more talented than their one-hit wonder status would ever suggest. Every album sounds great and decades ahead of its time. This one is no exception.

Possibly the best Talking Heads album. David Byrne is at his songwriting peak here blending his surreal lyrics that satirize society with his unique blend of funk, world beat, and new wave. This album is fearless and in being so, sounds like nothing but the Talking Heads. This album is a tremendous achievement and though it was released at the top of the decade, may be the best album of the 80s

-"Crosseyed and Painless" is super catchy with the main driving bassline, but within that main groove there's just a bunch of little parts. The main drums, the extra little background drums, the main bass, the guitar, lots of guitar flourishes, the synth, plus whatever other instruments I'm missing all blend to a really cool riff. -The repeating lines in "The Great Curve" almost become a rhythm because they are so consistent and overlapping -"Houses in Motion" has a great main riff. The elephant (?) solo at the end is pretty cool too -Album gets very spooky at the end -Solid tracks with a couple absolute bangers

My first off-mainstream music love as a teen was what got lumped under the broad umbrella of New Wave. The proliferation of sub-genres and side-genres around this wing of the Rock and Roll mansion starts to strike me as academic confabulating pretty quickly, though this album makes a strong argument for how diverse and wide ranging New Wave actually could be. It is about top form for Talking Heads, I think.

One of my favorites from this decade. Such a strange and angular band, and this is one of their weirdest and most interesting.

Classic album. Great rhythms, loved the mix of instruments. Bass is fantastic, really drives the band along. So many things to listen to at once, there's a lot going on.

This album is a groove and a half! The music moves and you have to, too. There is so much going on in these songs, lots of layers and a great mix of sonic textures. One of my all-time favorites. 5/5 stars

Outtakes are just as good as regular tracks.

So good! David Byrne is a proper genius

A stunning album, full of depth, ambition, sonic innovation and the extraordinary Once In A Lifetime, Talking Heads take their musical experimentation to a new level and create a new wave poly rhythmic art rock fusion masterpiece. Even more surprising for such a complex studio production is how good these songs would sound live on the Stop Making Sense tour. An album born out of creative frustration, recording limitations and antagonism between the band members - from such challenges is born a work of art.

One of my all time top ten

dead good.

Loved it.

This is what you get when a white suburban songwriter goes wild on Afro-American polyrhythms. It's strange disruptive and groovy as hell. One of the best albums of the 1980s and in my personal top 25.

I always enjoy listening to the Talking Heads, I just kind of don't do it enough

Great album!

i like it

Absolute masterpiece.

Love talking heads! Once in a lifetime album. Awesome album.

Talking Heads at their peak. Their evolution from full-on weird punk to masters of New Wave reaches its climax before they would go on tours for a few years. There are only 8 tracks, but they're absolutely perfect. There is quite literally not a single forgettable track. I feel like everyone who's listened to this album at least a few times can say something about each of them. Everyone has a different favorite. You'll notice that a lot of people rank their favorite tracks nearly exact to the track listing. That's because the album starts out loud and bombastic. "Under Punches" kicks off with a yell and goes straight into the action with weird lyrics and incredible synths that define everything great about Talking Heads. It's no wonder some consider them to be the epitome of the New Wave movement. The entire first side could easily be smash hits if placed on different albums, and it's incredible hearing them back to back. Very hard to pick favorites. Second side is also full of top tier tracks, but they're not dance based... it gets incredibly eery and involved. This makes for a thematic experience overall, but could push people away from finishing the album. My first few times listening to the album, my brain would always space out the last few tracks. But then I started listening to the lyrics. "Seen and Not Seen" is a lesson to be learned about the whims of appealing to how you wish to appear, and the consequences that may follow. "Listening Wind" is about a terrorist sick of intruding globalization. "The Overload" is a gothic atmospheric track which ambiguous, haunting lyrics that I still have no idea what to make of. They're not hits by any mean, but I love their sounds. Oh and the chorus of "Listening Wind" catches on. So many things I find perfect about this album. I was assigned Fela Kuti a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved his work, but didn't know why. Turns out it sounds just like Talking Heads. Talking Heads takes a lot from funk and afrobeat, most notable Parliament-Funkadelic and Fela Kuti respectively. Such developments came to fruition in Fear of Music, but I feel the sound is at its peak here. Not to mention Eno is back here again with the flawless production. It just sounds fantastic, and it's insane how they combined all these channels without divine guidance. Of course, Byrne's vocals is also a central strong aspect, not only with his peculiar yet accessible lyrics, but his speech pattern, and his delivery between melodic singings and proto-rap-like verses. I'm a sucker for synths and for weird music and complexity. This has all of that. Parts like when all voice channels sing different lines in "The Great Curve," or the speech about facts in "Crosseyed and Painless," or the part about water at the bottom of the ocean in "Once in a Lifetime," I look forward to it all as highlights. Sometimes I rewind just to hear them again. Truly, this album checks off everything I look for in an album, and delivers much much more I couldn't possibly expect other albums to have. You are guaranteed I will be listening to this album many times a year for as long as I live.

Top 2 Talking Heads album.

Great LP!

First record with a computerized image on the album cover! And what a record it is!

Fantastic album!

Top 3 album of all time. An absolute masterpiece. 10/10 1. The Great Curve 2. Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) 3. Once in a Lifetime

David Byrne!!!! That is all.

A1 album good from beginning to end.

I really liked the album. I grew up with the talking heads so 8/10

It real real good

banger

Great album. Already knew it, but nice to have a reminder to listen to it again.

Talking Heads almost always take chances with their music, trying out odd songwriting and instrumentation that doesn't always work out. The second half of this record, for example, is only okay. The last two songs in particular I take the needle off the record and move on. So it says something about how good the first four songs are that this album is still a 5. "Once in a Lifetime" has a legit claim to being one of the best songs ever, elevated by fantastic, innovative production. A record that rewards repeated listenings.

Polished enough to justify the quirky nature of their lyrics and rhythm, The Talking Heads fall for me outside the realm of music and closer to painting in that they appear to be a manifestation of subconscious thought materialized by art, creativity, and discipline.

mt bom

Agotador y obsesivo. Muy grande.

i think i prefer fear of music as far as heads/eno collabs, but its still a classic

Very good!

Simply the best.

one of my top faves

It's great

Loved it, the range of instruments made the songs catchy and upbeat without being overly cheesy

ooooooooooo that bass sound. dude this album is great.

One of my all-time favorites

Great!

Talking Heads + Eno always yields amazing results. Dark and weird. One of my favorites album of all time.

Love love love this album. "Crosseyed and Painless" & "The Great Curve" are 2 of my top 3 or 4 Talking Heads songs. This album is so funky and not as stiff as their earlier work. Classic

Might not be everyone’s cup of team but you can definitely see how it was influential for the new wave genre specially by mixing a bunch sounds that you wouldn’t expect

One of my favorite bands of the last decade (for me, not them. They haven't been together in a while). This album is not my favorite Talking Heads album. It's pretty middle of the road for me. However, I gave Modern Lovers and Fun Loving Criminals 4 stars, and Remain in Light is WAY better than either of those. Once in a Lifetime is a song that gets better and hits harder every single time I hear it. That track alone also makes this a 5 star album. But Born Under Punches, Crosseyed and Painless, and Fela's Riff are also all top notch

Descomunal.

My only real negative note is how repetitive the songs are, but at the same time, they kind of use that to add effect. Incredible album. Favorite Track(s): “Born Under Punches,” “The Great Curve,” “Once In A Lifetime,” and “Houses In Motion”

Now this is the new wave thag I want to listen to. Classic, love it, all around amazing

The perfect New Wave album.

So good. I’ve never listened to the whole album. And now I have, and feel richer for it.

Eclectic, fun.

One of the best

Love the energy of the looping grooves and stream of consciousness lyrics. Listened to Deluxe Edition.

Banger

Heard before

Great album

Inspired.

just a jam

Still like FoM better, but great album. The outtakes are stellar too.

Quite a bit better than I remember. Definitely more of a fan of the quirky, overbearing instrumentation this time around but the vocal performance is still a bit lacking.

I think I need to give it another listen. It might be quite a good album.

Probably their best

The Great Curve and Once in a Lifetime are so peak

I never heard this before but once in a lifetime was my favorite song when I was little. Still my favorite on this album

While album is great, it's sadly not the best version. That belongs to Angélique Kidjo who took the album to a new height by diving into the roots of the music.

How do I start a review? Not sure but Remain In Light did lead to a lengthy reflection on cultural appropriation vs. appreciation and this leans more appreciation considering Fela Kuti being cited as a major inspiration from it. I've loved polyrhythms since I learned what they were before this album and it's recording process was even more interesting, extended jamming and what ended up being an album all about feel and rhythm?? Even if you listened while sat still I could bet that you'd find yourself tapping your feet and that's very COOL to me Fav: Born Under Punches (Shocker lol) Listening Winds didn't do it as much for me and that's not saying it's bad at all ok bye

Talking heads great; you may find yourself is an all timer.

7 - starts strong then fades

great one.

Weird, slightly unnerving, but amazing musically. That is how I would describe the talking heads and this album embodies all these things. Not an album you'd put on speakers during a laid-back party, but definitely something I'd listen to again.

A killer guitar album but the obvious hit is the legendary one.

Перша половина альбому дуже яскрава і має феноменальну Once in a Lifetime.

Hard to turn off. Feels like I could listen 20 more times and still hear something new.

Syncopated rhythms

As you get older, it feels like there will be fewer opportunities to dance all night. To move, unencumbered by what other people think, or what your body thinks it can still do. Maybe, though, there will be a place under the pines where someone has set up the big speakers, and it is dark enough to forget where you are, and who you are, and even who else is there with you. Maybe the tracks are long enough that it all becomes one song. Maybe the beat goes on and on and on…

Surprised that I don't think I've ever listened to this album before. The highs are real high, but there's enough that's just ok to keep it out of five star range.

Just such a fantastic band, so weird and wonderful. Songs that surprise you but feel familiar. Got to be one of my favourite artists. Just wish I could’ve seen them. This isn’t my favourite album of theirs, but it’s still great, sort of music that makes you want to be your individual self - without making you feel lonely in doing so. Best Song: The Overload/Once In A Lifetime

It is a great album, they are right in their groove in this album. I think it it quite a front loaded album, first 5 songs are amazing but it drops off a bit towards the end. Best Track: Crosseyed and Painless

I went into this feeling like I don't fully get the Talking Heads. I still feel like I don't fully get them. That being said, I still really enjoyed this.

Very good

Excellent

These guys are all right

It may not be Talking Heads best album, but it’s pretty close. Their brand of anxious meets joyous funk is still hard to beat and, of course, Once in a Lifetime is a classic

Great listen but it was over way too soon

*1980. *Once in a Lifetime is the only hit here. (But obvs that makes it a minimum of a 4* album.) *I enjoy THs, so this was a pleasure to listen to. Not anything particularly exciting here and no other stand out tracks, but all pretty solid. *Oh wait, do I know Houses in Motion? I don't know, but that one has an especially fun chorus. RATING - 7.5/10

There aren't many albums in existence that can boast a centrepiece quite as good as the frankly outstanding 'Once In A Lifetime', but thankfully the seven tracks that surround it are more than just supporting filler. It's an album that picks up the groove from the first minute and runs with it. You always know when you're listening to a Talking Heads track, the blueprint is so strong, but that's not to call them formulaic. There's experimentation, variations on a theme and a distinctive arc to the album itself. I've never quite got into their stuff in a major way but individually there's loads to like about it.

Beuker

VERY groovy

Not sure why this one works for me but it does. Possibly it’s the propulsive beat and high energy sound. Woke me right up.

yes! favourite song: born under punches

Sounds like if Andy Warhol made music

Wow, first real surprise of this project! My first time listening to Talking Heads. Will surely come back. Unique mix of danceable funk/rock, elements of world music and weird electronic noises. Also, how the songs were arranged, I had the feeling to be taken on a real journey. 4/5 - excellent

The versatility of this group is something to be amazed: it's a chaotic explosion of sounds that sprout from different and (apparently) separate sections of music: the energy of punk rock fused with the ellegance of jazz and post-punk, funky beats with electronic experiments and a homage to a variety of sounds that comes from traditional cultures across Africa. An artistic equation such as that was unconventional for the late 70s (despite all the weirdness the punk and new wave movements already represented) and betting on it being released to the mainstream could have ended in disaster. But just lay your ears upon "Once In a Lifetime" and you'll realize that, no matter if you like it or not, Talking Heads are a band that came to stay: 🕺 goes on, and the heat goes on 🕺

That was a really fun ride! Loved some of the experimental stuff. A couple of tracks didn't really resonate, but the first couple really did. Just a fun vibe overall.

I know this and these guys. It’s good

its really good but like chill...

Förvånansvärt bra. Bättre i album än som singlar låtar.

Really good - still not sure if it’s as great as so many say it is, but keeps getting better after each listen.

Not my favorite Talking Heads but still good

Funky electictiveness!

have already listened to this album but it's been a bit so I guess it's worth listening to again. The album was alot more ambient than I remember

Pleasantly surprised. Never much cared for their music. This is good though (apart from the overplayed kids classic of a single)

Very interesting listening! I liked the songs, unique sound. 3.5

Fantastically weird album. Really gets going at The Great Curve and doenst let up.

enjoyed this, but not as much as '77. will give it chance to grow on me though like the other one

Groovier than expected Tina Weymouth carries Favorite song: The great curve

Great album! So many great rhythms, it kept jolting me awake with exciting new bits. Once In A Lifetime just an all time classic

In the end Once in a Lifetime drags this up to a four.

Good album

I like Talking heads a lot and this is a good one

More funky than I imagined. Definitely fun.

Incredible musicians. I am not sure I could listen to a lot of this, it is fairly complex music. But amazing record overall.

Such a good sounding album, critics think of this as the Talking Head's Magnum Opus, but it isn't my go-to Talking Heads album. I like the early stuff and how fresh it was. This is VERY polished in some respects and that isn't always where the best music comes from. A great album to sit and ponder. The more I listen to it, the better I like it. Repeated listening has jumped it up another star from me. It makes me want to listen to late Clash albums again.

Lots of fun. Some rythms around, I enjoyed once in a lifetime and seen and not seen

There are some incredible tracks in here and the album is coherent (unlike some where 1 or 2 tracks stand out) I listened to this one a few times and it's a band for me to now delve into the back catalogue

Side 1 is excellent but the albums tapers off towards the end. Adrian Belew's guest guitar work is a stand-out. A sonically interesting listen.

I want to like this album so bad, but I just can't give it a 5. It is just not that significant to me and I wish I liked this band more than I do, but I won't lie to myself or anyone that gives me that gasp face. 4.

Good! Cool vibes, nice early '80s mood.

Pretty interesting album. It's got a lot of funk feel, but just calling it funk seems reductive. It's more like an amalgamation of a bunch of different influences and styles mixed into one package. You can tell African music was a big source of inspiration for the music here. I ended up liking it a lot. I already knew a few of the songs and enjoyed the others just as much. The whole thing was a strong listen. I wouldn't say it was an all-time great album, but I did think it was pretty good. Overall: 3.8/5

Just an overall fun album. Vocals are great and seemed during the time would have been a very influential albums towards the '80s sound'.

Fantastic album by a legendary band. Not chock full of greatest hits radio singles (though it does have my favorite track by the group), it's a solid start-to-finish album, with great musicianship and songwriting.

100%. FAVO: Born Under Punches, The great curve, Once in a lifetime

Never really listened to the talking heads before but it’s pretty good

Some really great tunes on this one, but I thought the album as a whole would be better. It's ok, not excellent.

Loved the vibe. Not my fave album by The Talking Heads (The Talking Heads ‘77 is my go-to); made me feel like walking through a cool neo-noir movie, and I think it could go well with a rewatch of They Live. In some ways reminds me of something on the line of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised by Gil Scott Heron. Will check the lyrics again later, but it’s a solid 4 out of 5 for now

The progression seem to go from cheerful and funky to end in a kind of eerie monoton track which was not a great finale in my opinion. Some parts, aspecially a few outros, feels a bit protracted. I do however love the funky feeling in many of the tracks that builds on rhythm guitar and great bass lines. That along with the feeling that the beat in many songs circled round a different key percussion. That soundscape with Byrnes awesome, kind of shaky and fragile, voice in the high notes makes for a great contrast.

Remain In Light is a zany experience. It's really interesting. It takes a hot second to get really firing and then it's off to the races. First half of the album is great, then the last few songs kind of go off the rails in a strange, creepy, ambient stream-of-consciousness monologing kind of way. It's like the album devolves from a happy mixed-genre funky mish-mash to a slow, dreary, psychadelic contemplative place. I'm here for it. Favorite tracks on this listen were "Crosseyed and Painless" "The Great Curve" and "Once in a Lifetime" - an absolute classic - this trio of songs is incredible. I like the twists of electronic influence, love Byrne's style, and it's overall a really cool album. I dont know if it's an all timer though. With some time to sit with it and more listens, maybe. A very strong 4 for me.

Love how funky it is. bass is peak. really fun to listen to. favs: the great curve, seen and not seen, double groove

Certainly an interesting experience, very groovy all around. Mostly pleasant to listen to, though some songs perhaps overstayed their welcome. The overall audio experience was certainly creative and interesting, though, as were the lyrics and vocals. I didn't enjoy it as much as I find it interesting and respect the artistry involved. However you spin it, it's quite intriguing for me, hence why I'll give it a higher score than would befit my personal enjoyment.

Very experimental. I would definitely try it out again.

8.5/10

Great album

Yes yes YES! The live version of Once in a Lifetime on Stop Making Sense is one of my favourite tracks of all time. SMS is my favourite Talking Heads album - my parents had the CD and played it at top volume when I was a kid. The regular recorded versions of this tracks always felt a little lifeless, but I still love them all. Watched the 4K restoration in a cinema when it came out and had the best time. In saying all of that, some tracks here bore me to death. The other half is fantastic. 4/5 because one of my fave songs of all time is on this record, but it is far from perfect.

Favorite Track: Once In A Lifetime

SO funky, this album satisfies my bodies craving for rhythm. Juicy guitar, drums you don't hear every day. And wow the lyrics and vocals. I love it when an album from start to finish just puts me in a trance, forward moving--- I really liked this album ^o^ Once in a Lifetime is my favorite (of course), Listening Wind made an impression on me too.

Once in a Lifetime is one of the greatest songs of all time! Never listened to the rest of the album but it's good if uneven. May need a few more listens

Love it - 4.5

It can get weird, but I'm here for it.

Liked this way better on a 2nd listen - I knew none of these tracks other than Once in a Lifetime, they're all pretty spectacular.

classical tracks, some innovative styles and overall an interessting album.

alternative, funky, rock, dope album cover, really cool

My 3rd Talking Heads album on this list, and probably the best one so far - or maybe it's just finally starting to click for me. It's like a weird missing link between 70s funk and 80s quirky pop (but with great instrumentals instead of lame synths and drum machines). I can see how they could be considered visionaries - as a matter of fact, "Once In A Lifetime" almost sounds like a cheeky parody of 80s pop before 80s pop even existed, which is a feat in itself. I'm still not a big fan of the singer's voice, but the instrumental parts are good (especially the groovy guitar and psychedelic flute). Lyrics are also a lot of fun, alternating between hilarious and unhinged. Overall it's a treasure trove of creativity and weirdness, and even if it's not something I'd revisit often, I have to admit they're doing something right. I might end up liking Talking Heads after all. 7/10

I definitely understand the hype around this album and the band in general. They've got great rock grooves and riffs but also add a lot of experimental elements to their tracks that elevate each song that much more. 8.5/10. Favorite Song: Born Under Punches

Really solid album, but Once in a Lifetime is more of a sonic outlier than I anticipated.

Love this record. Didn’t really “get” Talking Heads back when this album was released, but now they are one of my favorite bands of this era.

This was great, love the talking heads

It was pretty good since its my first time listening to albums i wanna explore more

Very Upbeat and the bongo-esque instrumentation is very addicting

Fav- once in a lifetime 4/5

Once in a Lifetime is such a strange and unique song. The whole album is, really. Just classic offbeat 80s ideas with 10/10 execution.

Rating: 9/10 An excellent 80’s American rock achievement, and another banger of a Brian Eno produced record, one in which he’s basically another member of the band. Wild experimentation and funky polyrhythms are employed with the band reaching their creative peak. I wouldn’t even call it post-punk at this point, but what it is is really good shit. It falls off a little bit more in the end for me after the insane first half album run, but Listening Wind is still really solid. The first four tracks are some *chefs kiss* perfection

Pretty cool. Creative and weird and fun to listen to. Tapers off into a bit of a snooze but still a 7.1/10

Kermit the Frogs’s ‘Once in a Lifetime’ is one of those rare examples of the cover being better than the original.

I wish I could hear this for the first time again! As it is, I'm a little bored with the tracks I know because they've suffered from success. Tracks 1-4 are still really good, but I have the sense that I'm lacking the excitement they would give when they came out. The second half is less stellar The rhythmic loops and textures are very cool. But there isn't much arrangement beyond that, just groove There are some solid thematic and stylistic ideas, but I'm not a huge fan of the Eno influence

Eclectic, different, creative and interesting album.

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that Talking Heads/David Byrne is what I keep expecting David Bowie to be like. I like his music less, and this music more.

6/1001 Remain in Light - Talking Heads (1980) The run from the opener to "Once in a Lifetime" may be one of the greatest four track runs of all time. This album was way ahead of its time, and as a Brian Eno fan it was really nice to hear his influence. David Byrne is an absolute genius with his writing, and the jamming of Jerry, Tina and Chris make this a cohesive electrifying experience. Although if with how heavy and apparent the inspiration is, I'd be happy to consider Fela Kuti the fifth (sixth) member of this group here. All said, the track run from "Once in a Lifetime" to the closer just wasn't as strong for me and ultimately held this album back from perfection. ★★★★½

Having heard some Talking Heads before, this is exactly what I expected

upbeat, interesting instrumentals, reminds me of jay keane. holy vocals i dont like the vocals. too avant garde w the instrumentals for me second track much more appealing sounds like they sung this on coke or addy or sumn third track fav so far, perf driving song track 4 good asl too holy switch up start of track 5 from track 5, it's gotten significantly less crackhead-y wtf track 7 why am i in a middle eastern country in a michael bay film why am i in gotham track 8 why was i a rasta on coke track 1-3, detective in a thriller track 4-6, a stereotypical camel rider in track 7, and then bruce wayne track 8

Stop I was so excited to see this pop up I freaking love the talking heads and don’t know enough of their music. This is cool girl music. I listened to the deluxe version and I thought the unfinished outtakes were pretty jammy! I don’t think they’d be hits but like they were shredding for a bit there. Favs: the great curve, once in a lifetime, houses in motion, the overload

Just as idiosyncratic as the Talking Heads are known to be, but Reman In Light is a remarkable step forward in terms of sound and songwriting. A snapshot of a band blazing new trails.

While I do think these songs work way better in the concert film, they’re still good & groovy as hell

Great album. Despite the effort to achieve a more "band" album, the excellent result nevertheless has quite the Eno/Byrne vibe. Today I will marvel at the fact that it sounds like 7xFela then 1xJoy Division and somehow that works.

Was good

Pretty good, just wouldn’t really listen to this. Stand-outs - Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) - Crosseyed and Painless - Right Start

Album 80 Top 3 favorites off the album: Seen and Not Seen, Listening Wind, Crosseyed and Painless Guys, I'm kind of freaking out. I just found myself behind the wheel of a large automobile parked in front of a beautiful house. I went up and rang the doorbell to see if I could get some help figuring out where exactly I was and this beautiful woman opened the door, gave me a kiss, and pulled me inside. I'm sitting in the front room now. The couch is comfortable. It's all tastefully decorated. There's a picture of a wedding on the wall. She's one of the brides. The other one looks an awful lot like me. I think she must be *my* beautiful wife. What do I do??? We've made it!!! I finally get to listen to Talking Heads for an extended period of time!!! Could I have done this before? Absolutely. Should I have done this before? Without a doubt. Is my dad hearing about this immediately? You bet. If they were spinning this in clubs back in the day, I would have been there, no questions asked. If they were spinning it now, I would also be there, no questions asked. Glorpy bass is one of my favorite sounds. Shoutout Tina Weymouth.

These guys fuck, except that one overplayed song

Lengedary album

Such a unique sound

Very cool. I didn't know I knew the Talking Heads. "Once in a Lifetime" is super popular

Every song kind of sounds the same, but its a great sound!

Just a really enjoyable album
