The first 8 tracks are bangers, unfortunately I didn't enjoy the subsequent songs as much. Still a very good album overall.

Enjoyed it, easily my favourite so far

I'd Like To Know is probably the best introduction to a debut album ever! This album surely is a tribute to their parent's recited collections. Frenetic fun from a band that was a step above the other Britpop purveyors.

Three hairy boys come stumbling out of the mid 90's with some classic Britpop. Think Mexican wolf boys on speed, but they're from Oxford. Best Tracks: Caught By The Fuzz; Mansize Rooster; Alright

Interesting album. Sofa of My Lethargy sounded like it was from the 70s, I’d Like to Know from the 80s, and Alright is peak 90s. I don’t know that I’d ever listen to the album straight through again, but a few good songs

Very high energy, most of it is pretty good.

Catchy, very catchy in places.

Another one I loved at the time but hadn't heard in ages. What a great album full of bangers, thrilled to have seen them play most of this in a fairly-empty Mercury Lounge back at CMJ in 1995 (and gigged with them when they were The Jennifers even earlier). Top notch, and they made some other good albums but I don't think they were quite this exciting again

I liked this band when they first appeared, bought their initial singles and 2nd album. Great fun, energy and sense of joy with their recycled nostalgia. Good talents, enjoyable and accomplished debut.

This was fun and exuberant with a kind of timeless, youthful British pop sound. I didn't recognize the band name, but I definitely was familiar with "Alright" which has always been a favorite song. So happy to hear more of them!

Let me preface this review with a couple of facts that may have biased my listening experience today. First of all, I had half of a cup of coffee this morning, after being caffeine-free for at least a month. Also, I purchased some really awesome new Chaco's today. So, honestly, I was so giddy while listening that I may have given 90 minutes of a doorbell ringing a 5/5. Despite my anticipation that I would not be excited by this mid-90s Britpop album when it showed up, I really had fun listening to the album. It captured my interested from start to finish.

A fun pop-punk, summertime vibe, like it should be coming out a transistor radio tuned to an AM station in the basket of your banana seat bike with coaster brakes.

Catchy, punky Britpop that I found enjoyable to listen to. I recognized Alright immediately - great song! The whole album was fun to listen to. Really representative of the mid-90s. Filled with perfect soundtrack options here for your next 90s film. Definitely worth the listen! Favorites: Caught by the Fuzz, Alright, Strange Ones, She’s So Loose, Time, Sofa of my Lethargy

Some loud punk songs, some slower acoustic songs, overall a mixed bag, a typical example of mid 90s alternative rock. I recognized the song "Alright" from a few TV shows, movies, and commercials.

It was alright. Sounded like some inspiration for the New Pornographers. Wasn't quite catchy enough for me to think I'll return.

The love child of punk and glam , fully impish and a touch zany this is quite good fun. Way better than Arctic Monkeys, todays closest comp. Trying to recall if better than Superchunk a band Of same era. “Sofa of my Lethargy” is best cut and a great song. “Alright” and “She’s So Loose” and “Time” and “Time to Go” are also strong.

Not quite a classic. A lot of fun

I like their magpie-like approach in terms of influence, with a bit of kinks here, but of pink floyd there, but of the lovin’ spoonful and all that. Not sure it all gels though - I think this was an album of early promise rather than a classic. They got more interesting and assured later on. Some great songs on here though, but mainly the singles: Strange Ones, Alright, Caught by the Fuzz.

Didn't think I knew any of their songs 'til Alright came on. I always thought that songs was older, has a kinks-y feel to it. Anyhow, great listen.

The last group I was in I believe that this album came up. It wasn't terrible, sounded very much 90s, kept me moving on my walk, so 3 stars for you Supergrass!

I need to listen to more of them.

My favorite Supergrass album I think. The whole Standard English Indie Rock Vocal Deliver Protocol is a little limiting, but this is the kind of music it fits best. Just fun and fast.

I feel like I'm listening to a teenage garage punk band, very raw and shouty. A couple of catchy songs, but couldn't get into most of the songs.

The album was alright. It not really a punk album but whatever a step below punk is. It was relatively short which was good. I did not recognize any of the songs, nor was I familiar with the band. I did not skip any songs. I do not think I will relisten to the album.

Started out sounding like surfer punk and ended very chill.

I actually really liked this and would listen to it again. I of course know the song "Alright" from the Clueless movie soundtrack, but the rest of the album is tight and super fun.

Drummer is superb, and their infectious energy and evident polish, especially for teenagers, brings a lot of charisma

It's not necessarily my thing- garage rock never was. Hipsters love this shit. It's certainly not bad though, and Alright and Time to Go were good.

Supergrass: for me, a typical UK singles band, with albums -to which I had not listened for ages- that are solid at best. A while ago we had In It For The Money: 3 stars for me. I Should Coco, their debut is not that much different ..but the singles are even stronger and I like quite a few (but not all) non-album tracks as well - very surprising that Strange Ones wasn't one of the singles: 4 stars.

It's alright, doesn't seem like anything particularly special to me though.

Aside from Alright popping up a few times on Spotify song radio, I was very unfamiliar to Supergrass. The first listen was irritating but did notice some quality songs, so played it again the following day and my opinion has improved a lot this time round. The singles aside from Alright (which was already great) went from annoying to pretty darn good and despite some of the corny tracks near the middle (i.e. chipmunk We're Not Supposed To), the final few songs made a strong high note to end on. There is a mood and a time for I Should Coco, but it's definitely a worthwhile listen despite a few bumps.

First, hate the cover, it is distressing. Other than that I liked this album much better than the other Supergrass that was generated for me. I don't love it, but it is generally listenable with some good bits which remind me of various other British bands. Alright is an undeniably good song, Sofa of my Lethargy is nice, and Time To Go is super cute as the last song.

The first ever listen on this album led to a need for a second ever go-around. For this reviewer's purpose, that is a good thing. There is not much about this album that is spectacular, or that stands out other than a bit of a 'whiplash' effect from high energy punk 'wannabes' to rolling in the blues. Somehow, this works and that makes the album fun and that at least for this experience, earns its grade for being a surprise. Most people will recognize "Alright" through commercials, retail radio, etc., but the album overall maintains interest throughout, so much so that there will be a third listen-through and perhaps a new favorite has been discovered.

A mixed bag

A cool early Brit version of pop-punk.

It was fine, energetic, and British, so of course it made the list. Seriously though, kind of fun and quick.

Great fun album. Alright and Caught By the Fuzz are great tracks. Most of the album holds up nicely and it sounds like the band was having fun making the album.

Started with that particular sound that is typical of the punkier side of Britpop and I groaned. Then it turned out that every song was the band doing something different, and new, and exciting and generally just really really good. Alright is an absolute classic single which probably doesn't represent the overall style too well but certainly showcases the quality on display.

I vibed with it. I really liked the keys (as usual) in addition to the whole feel of the album. A few of the songs felt like misses to me, but the rest of the songs more than made up for those. Every song felt unique, and I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Favorite track: Alright

This one was a bit of a weird one. It was a punk rock style throughout, but right at the end they dropped a psych-rock/prog-rock track as well. It was fine overall, probably won't come back to it though. Highlights: 1, 2, and 4.

This one was fine enough. I don't love or hate it. There have been a lot of those lately. Fave track: "Time to Go," the closer. Found the melody lines kinda forgettable in this one. Vocals were okay, but wouldn't re-listen.

Good album, nothing earth shattering but a decent listen, I enjoyed it.

I was surprised at how many of these songs I knew. I think I had heard of Supergrass before, but I don't think I knew any of their songs really. But there were at least 2 or three of these I knew from films or the radio. As a whole, this grew on me as the album progressed. The vocalist reminded me initially of Jack White. But the music doesn't really sound like his, there's a bit more variety here which I thought was pretty cool. All in all, this might be a band I look more into. I really dug this album. A low 4, at the least.

Still no Beatles and a second Supergrass album? Are these guys good enough to have two albums on this list? I don't know but I really started to dig this album after a couple listens. I definitely liked their second album more from the get-go but I was rocking along with this one soon enough. Like their second album, the first half of this debut is quite good and then fades a bit. Still, lots of rock attitude to enjoy and some variety to boot. My favorite track right away was Lenny - pounding sound. Alright is, well, alright - enjoyable (and more poppy) but a bit overplayed. At first I thought Strange Ones had sort of a confused punk sound but it also grew on me. I'd Like to Know is better (more consistent melody and sound), and it is also about what the strange ones get up to. Caught by the Fuzz and Mansize Rooster are solid; the latter is better while the former has a little something that annoys me. Both have the Britpop rock/pop sound with some keyboard jangle (think the Fratellis). Lose It has some nice edge to the sound, one of the best songs on the album I think. Sitting Up Straight has a fun frenetic pace (after a boring intro). I was less interested in the songs after that, except for Time. It had the best rhythms on the whole album - maybe my second favorite track. Maybe they don't deserve two albums on the 1,001 list but it was still quite good and I'm glad I got exposed to it because I only knew the song Alright before today.

This is a fun, cool album. Great debut. I'm not a big fan of 90s britpop, but this is definitely some intelligent fun power pop I can get behind. We previously listened to their second album In It for the Money. I liked that one but none of the music was sticking in my head for some reason. This one seems a bit rawer and pulled me in more than their second album. I liked all the tracks except for "We're Not Supposed To" which was kind of annoying. I watched the video for Alright since that was the big hit - I liked the callbacks to "The Prisoner" (e.g., the Prisoner bicycle and "rover"). I'll call it a 4 - a really good album that I can see coming back to, but not at the same level as a 5 for me.

I love Supergrass and I believe the band's grossly underappreciated. However, I also believe the band has peaked and perfected its sound with its self titled album from 1999; I find this one a bit too rough around the edges, despite some great tunes (and I love Sofa of my lethargy!).

Alright. See what I did there. None of it comes close to that track though. Decent stuff but not entirely in my preferred style.

Top end of a 3, this one. Really liked the energy and had a bit of edge to it. I really don't like Alright though, find it really grating despite its popularity!  Can definitely tell that loads of the indie bands from the early 200s listened to stuff like this, it's definitely got more attitude and oomph than most Britpop (but it's not as catchy as Oasis or as clever as Pulp).

Supergrass produced some absolutely solid singles which can be found at the beginning of the album, but the later half of the album didn't quite hold up as well as the first half.

This is a great album. Being raised on quite a bit of Brit-Punk this just gives me so many good vibes. Alright is just an all time classic. Only song I didn't really like was "We're Not Supposed To" which was just a really strange departure from the rest of the album. "Sofa Of My Lethargy" is a good track that just goes on for a little too long. This also might be the most upbeat punk album that I have ever heard.

90s nostalgia

This is a rating splitter. It starts off like a beast with hit after hit, but then it has a right wobble. If this was about 3 tracks shorter it'd be a 5 star but I just can't dish out the highest ever achievement any album can receive (5 stars from bort) to an album where you skip that many tracks. Shame.

A soiled nappy blowing in the wind. It lands on the unsuspecting face of Gaz Coombs. He spends the next 10-12 working days trying to get the shit out of his sideburns. It has become hard and knotted. Eventually Gaz gives up and takes his own life. There's a lesson to be learned here.

Fun if inconsequential sounding album. Britpop is a pretty middling genre in general in my opinion and this isn't doing much to change my mind but it's entertaining enough.

I really like Brit-pop and this has got to be one of the most energetic and fun albums in the genre.

Really don't like the album cover but the music is good. 3/5. Second time listening and a few of the songs are growing on me.

Really strong

I missed this one when it came out, but then again, I was living in NYC listening to the last bit of metal glory and the rising grunge scene. This style of post-punk / pop-punk wouldn't catch on for some time, by which time I've moved on. It's okay for what it is, I think there are albums that better capture the pop punk British sound of the time. 3/5.

A lot more varied and interesting that the early tracks would suggest. A healthy lack of seriousness and a focus on having fun.

Supergrass harkens back to the British Invasion and Mod scene with I Should Coco. It is a solid album with notable tracks and "Alright" has a stay in the cultural scene that most bands would be envious of.

i don't know what it is about this album, i just LOVE it. it's not even like a quintessential masterpiece, it's just fun, upbeat, and charming. makes me happy.

This one screams rock and roll! It’s hard to believe that a band of kids would come up with this record. It is a collection of catchy songs with an excellent production. It keeps its promise and never feels slow or boring. Don’t know why Supergrass was not one of the big examples of the 90s Britpop movement, they definitely had the rockstar material and songs to back up such statement!

Really great. This album helps to salvage my opinion of 90s rock music. Kinda like punk/pop punk at times, except they are actually good at their instruments and can write songs that involve more than just four basic-ass barre chords. Side question: why is UK rock music astronomically better than US rock music? I grew up in the wrong country

I had to go back and gave it a second run-through just to be sure but it turns out, this is a pretty good album. I started skeptical but, the more I listened to it the more I ended up really digging it. The songs are fun, the production is great, and the guitar tones are truly exceptional. I'm honestly shocked that this wasn't on my radar before now.

An interesting, angular LP that harkens the arrival of Jack White 4 years before the White Stripes would drop their S/T. Not all of the slower tracks work alongside the familiar-yet-skewed uptempo rock songs, but the overall product is one that warrants a relisten by far.

This is exactly the sort of experience I was hoping for with the 1001 albums project. A band I had never heard of whose music was right in my wheelhouse. I had heard their single on the radio many years ago but the whole album is a banger. 4.5/5 stars

Interesting listen. Not incredibly special.

Lord, I wasn't ready for this at 08:45 on a Friday morning. The first song almost gave me a heart attack I had it up so loud. With this type of music, it sounds like the same fella has universally sung all of them as the voice always sounds the same. The song 'Alright' seems very out of place in this album, when it came on I had to check it was still playing the right one. If only the other songs had that vibe. The song titles probably entertained me more than the songs themselves, She's So Loose is an excellent example of that. The final song, Time To Go, I just found a bit strange and a cringey end to the album. Now, the album cover I'm not a huge fan of, its not a great painting if I'm honest, looks like something for a Year 10 art project. And because of the font, I read the title as 'I should GoGo' rather than CoCo which isn't ideal. 5/10 for the album cover.

This album is so great! I think I've heard most of these songs individually in other contexts, but had never listened to this entire album before. I can't believe it's as old as it is.

The name is familiar but somehow this band has completely escaped my knowledge despite being up my alley. Giving it a 3 but could move up to 4 with some more listens.

The opening sound like the Horrible Histories Tv theme. Its like good pop punk. Enjoying it so far. Second track, Caught by the Fuzz is also good. I wasn't aware that Supergrass had such a punky sound to them. Track 4 is also a banger, though I like it less than 1 and 2. Track 5 also slaps. Goods - I'd like to know. Caught by the Fuzz.

Like this album's big hit it was Alright! It definitely grew on me thru the day. I liked! Strange Ones Time Sofa of my Lethargy Originally would have rated a 2 but I like those 3 songs VERY MUCH. I'd like to know where all the strange ones go.

Great fun. Couple of loose ones

Some great Britpop here. Alright is an absolute banger of a song and classic Britpop. Caught by the Fuzz is another great track. The rest of the album is a bit of a let down. Some good songs, though they sound a bit samey. Alright, however remains a brilliant song.

Honestly pretty surprised I never listened to this one. Always heard of the name but don't know I could name a single song of theirs. I expected pop but got pretty good rock/punk/pop mix. Then "Alright" came on and I immediately recognized the song and band.

This was one of the first albums I ever bought, when I was eleven. I genuinely loved Alright when it came out, though I preferred Lenny. Indeed, I even had a pair of rudimentary sideburns aged 11 (though in fairness I've somehow always had a pair of Sidney Sideboards ever since I was about 8; I didn't spurt into puberty especially prematurely, I just always had sideburns). Now, I have no problem with me loving this album as kid, but how would I respond to it as a 30something? Very warmly, it turned out. We have here an amiable, sincere yet playful and funloving record. It's an adolescent record (indeed, children liked Supergrass), but thankfully focuses on the carefree happiness of your first spliff and your first caress of a bosom, rather than 28 tracks about self-harming and hanging round cemeteries. To add a note on the album's eclecticism, I Should Coco has a intriguing number of different styles. Yes, these styles aren't jarringly different from each other, forming part of the standard canon of British indie rock (Beatles, Kinks, Who, Clash, Jam, Smiths, Stone Roses etc.), but Supergrass' embrace of them feels organic, as if they actually just like those bands, rather than out of a need to brag about their record collection (looking at you Spiritualized, Primal Scream and Radiohead). It's a pleasing, natural variance that doesn't reek of showiness. Basically, not a duff track, and that's great enough.

Enjoyed second half of album more. Reminds me of Buzzcocks but slightly more melodic with more accessible grooves.

This is an entirely new album for me. Loving it so far - nice energy. Long, though - 3 hrs of music?! I accidentally grabbed the 20th Anniversary album, which had a lot of live stuff on it, which didn't excite me much.

Tracks all blended together and nothing stood out as a great single.

This list is really testing my assumed affection for Britpop. There's an obvious youthful energy on this record, expressed most positively on the first side. But while the band produces some nice pop-punk, it's an uncompelling pop fusion. The second half gets different and not in a good way. Instead, I'm left confused why this is on the list. Definite listen-once-as-it-comes-out material.

Meh. I couldn't get through a single playthrough. I have got to believe that there are at least 1001 albums in the world better than this one. Sure, I recognized 'Alright', but it sounded nothing like the rest of the album. If that was the only song that got this album on the list, then I'm really lost. I did appreciate that the related wikipedia page taught me about cockney rhyming slang, so at least I've got that going for me.

Much better than a lot of the stuff that was around that swamped it

Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Alright just reminded me of my junior high/swim team BFF and going to see Clueless at the movies back when you'd beg your parents to drop you off away from the front door so they couldn't embarrass you. Bonus point for that nostalgia.

‘I Should Coco’ is more super catchy melodic guitar rock, with touches of psychedelia, more fun, and slightly less introspection and darkness then their other album in this book ‘In It For The Money’.

I found the first song to actually be a little bit jarring, but I settled into the music after a couple of songs. I feel like I have heard the song “Alright” before, though I do not recall hearing of this band previously. In the end, I found this album alright (heh), but not really one I’d make an effort to hear again.

13. I should Coco - Supergrass - 13 Tracks. I like Supergrass so am biased, but this is an album where strength of big tracks isn't diminished by relative weakness of others. It's a proper album. Listen to it soon! I'm about to play it again right now. 5/5.

Its a good rock album. The band doesn’t reinvent rock in their discography but they offer the energy and fun that has always transcended the genre. The last 3/4 songs offer the best writing on the album.

Things I was doing in 1995: - playing a lot of NHL '94. - touring with a band in the back of a van around the northeastern US. - eating poorly. - holding down a tech support job during the day which funded the rest of said list. Things I was not doing in 1995: listening to pop/punk. So I missed this one although kind of surprising considering how embedded I (thought I) was into the current music scene, almost by necessity. I do like the songs "Alright" and "Time To Go" - nice melodies - the keys on Alright are a nice instrumental change-up and Time To Go is a great pace slowdown from the rest of the album but on the whole it is not in my wheelhouse, being fast-paced shouty punk-ish music. I'll give a nod to the fact that it's much more melodic than I might have expected but its never-ending frenetic pace is just too much for me. This one I can see how others would like but not my cup of tea (tea very much a pointed analogy. they're British? get it? of course you do.). 4/10 2 stars.

Verstehe kaum, wie nach diesem Kracher Erstling dann das sophomore „In it for the money“ folgen konnte, wirkt doch das dritte s/t eher als konsequentere Fortsetzung. „I should coco“ durchläuft dabei innerhalb seiner 40 Minuten selbst einen sagenhaften Reifeprozess. Fegt ein jugendlich kraftstrotzender Wirbelsturm über die A-Seite hinweg, fahren auf B wahnsinnig selbstbewusste Könner eine immens lässige Abfahrt den Mucker Mountain herunter. „Who could ask for more“ than 3.8

Kind of boring. It can sound like the Foo Fighters or the Beatles, but overall if feels pretty dull.

Occasionally entertaining but mostly unmemorable and juvenile witterings; the band would improve with experience.

Ah yes, my vibe of alt rock. This is so fun!! I knew the original band of "Alright" was an alt rock band, but didn't know it was them! While these songs are all great, none of them stood out to me.

Alright. Few standouts but few duds

The first 4 songs of this album are amazing but then the rest of it is mundane. I want to rate this as a 4 but it's not quite at that level.

This is some fantastic brit-punk. 'Alright' fits in easily with the later sounds of the early 2000's pop-punk / indie-pop from the likes of Fun! and MGMT. Lenny is a song that plays harder, heavier. Strange Ones fluctuates through different tempo changes, not really sitting still in a completely different way than Sitting up Straight, which blasts through its run time at a breakneck pace. By the time Sofa (Of My Lethargy) comes around, we've entered a grand psychedelic sprawl. Overall, a tight record, with excellent production, instrumentation, and track layout.

I didn't really enjoy this album that much. Some songs were alright. The song Alright was the highlight of this album, I love that song. That's the only reason why this album is getting a 2/5 stars.

Really loved this at first! Great sound and energy. Toward the end there was the Chipmunk sounding song and it dropped off from there. Would definitely still listen again.

A good compliment to Elastica the day before. Solid 4, another example of the best kind of 90s.

Part brit pop, part indie rock with smatterings of grunge laced throughout. Not particularly cohesive as an album but some decent songs on it nevertheless : 'She's so loose', 'sofa of my lethargy' and 'time to go' being the pick of the bunch.

It's rare that I don't dislike punkish music, but this one sort of hit the right spots. I liked how it was upbeat without being "just fun" (=super annoying). The songs were more structured and the chaotic parts thereby more enjoyable to me than usual for this style. Not something I'd listen to again, but a good experience. I really liked Sofa Of My Lethargy, that was a very good song.

love it Gaz Coombes reminds me of late great Jay Reatard. I knew of the song "Alright" But its rad to hear the other jams too.

Wank. Apart from the anthemic "We Are Young" there's not much to set this apart from any of the sub standard 90s Brit pop. The heavier numbers however, do make them sound like a bit of a British Green Day which isn't a compliment btw.

Another painfully average album from another one hit wonder band. I like the feel of it in places but in others it just feels like hot mess. The only single on it, Alright, is pretty self describing. I quite liked Time and Sofa Of My Lethargy wouldn’t be out of place on a Blur album. Overall, very average and doesn’t inspire me to listen twice.

TIL Supergrass and Superchunk are different bands. Grass is not chunk and chunk is not grass. I saw chunk at the Funhouse once and it was ok. Grass would've been superfun. Superenergetic. Almost the kind of youthful energy that can make an old 36 year old man feel exhausted, but not today. They sound like many bands I can't recall from the early 2000s that came aftergrass. Maybe Hot Hot Heat? While the US was getting into alternative and aftergrunge, these British kids were playing fun punk that's not afraid of a giant happy major chord in the chorus. Seems very out of its time but pretty cool in 2021. Not sure when I'll play this again, but maybe if live music returns I'll hear "Alright" playing lightly in the background after the house lights come up. B

I think Jack White owes these guys some royalties for vocal stylings. A lot of uptempo white stripes vibes, almost as if the white stripes were the devil on the shoulder and super grass was the angel. Definitely a precursor to the “the” bands: the strokes, the vines, the hives, etc. really fun album, but got a bit repetitive for me. I enjoyed the latter end of the album after the uptempo stuff got a bit tired. B-

Britpop at it's peak and it totally rules. Just such a large sound being used to the full extent of it's abilities. It feels like they frontloaded all the good songs though, because it ends up losing some steam after Lenny. Still worth a full listen though; the Britpop history is a fascinating one which I'm happy to explore outside of the usual Blur and Oasis records.

The sort of rock that I forgot I was listening to halfway in.

Fun, eccentric, Brit pop at peak Brit pop. I enjoyed this. A good pick me up in the morning. Nothing groundbreaking or awe inspiring but I could see where MGMT drew some influence. I could almost hear them in some of these songs.

Not up my alley. I actually stopped listening about halfway through to go listen to Crime of the Century and Deja Vu instead, both of which I easily listened the whole way through.

Tearing by at a breakneck speed, I Should Coco is a spectacularly eclectic debut by Supergrass, a trio barely out of their teens. Sure, the unbridled energy of the album illustrates that the band is young, yet what really illustrates how young the bandmembers are is how they borrow from their predecessors. Supergrass treat the Buzzcocks, the Beatles, Elton John, David Bowie, Blur, and Madness as if they were all the same thing -- they don't make any distinction between what is cool and what isn't, they just throw everything together. Consequently, the jittery "Caught by the Fuzz" slams next to the music hall rave-up "Mansize Rooster," the trippy psychedelia of "Sofa (Of My Lethargy)," the heavy stomp of "Lenny," and the bona fide teen anthem "Alright." I Should Coco is the sound of adolescence, but performed with a surprising musical versatility that makes the record's exuberant energy all the more infectious.

I’m old enough that teenage me bought their debut single ‘Caught by the Fuzz’ on “Cassingle” the week it came out, because the NME told me to. (A ‘cassingle’ is a portmanteau of the words ‘cassette’ and ‘single’ that the record industry tried to make a thing for a while. You can google what a cassette is). I remember the NME review saying something about it being the sort of song where you’d find the CD (or cassingle) down the back of your sofa in a few years time and it would still sound great. I think they were implying that Supergrass would be a bit of a one-hit wonder so they didn’t really get that bit right, but they were spot on about the song still sounding good 25 years later. My opinion of this album is probably too influenced by the memory of teenage hormones and youthful naivety to be particularly objective, but I love it and it was a great journey down memory lane. On a side note, about a year and a half ago I saw Gaz Coombes play a free gig near my house, at the opening of a small bridge that doesn’t go anywhere (true story). He’s still great so I’d definitely recommend going and seeing him play, if there are any small, pointless bridges being opened within walking distance of your house.

High energy, bouncy and catchy. Can hear why Steven Spielberg wanted to make them into the new Monkees. Is it a 3 or a 4? Probably a 3. A bit one time.

I was definitely losing interest during some tracks, but then just as I was about to note the track name down, they would change up the rhythm or instrumentation to grab my attention again and this was a running theme. I would say that I only really knew of ‘alright’ from this album before listening, and that track is probably the worst representation of what this album provides. This is classic brit-pop playfulness mixed with some rather Jammy basslines, solid riffy guitar work and a buttload of energy that tails off gently towards the albums final tracks. Quite mature themes for a band in their teens. Will probably come back to this album for long summer road trips or getting ready for a rowdy night on the tiles.

“I Should Coco” by Supergrass (1995) Well, this is fun. In the genre of unserious rock, this competent trio entertains the listener with artfully executed shallowness. It can be described as thin slices of nothing you’ve never heard before, pasted together with deliberate incoherence, producing an overall effect of “Oh, what the hell.” Musically, we have up tempo compositions with good rhythm guitar, better bass, and not quite so good drums. Lyrics are frequently an inscrutable pastiche of conversational tidbits that don’t quite rise to the level of wit—but that’s okay, because this is all about fun anyway. Lots of lyrical references to what is “strange”, indicating both a fixation and a certain naive lust for life, but hey, these are kids. The track “Strange Ones” is almost interesting. Along with “Sitting Up Straight”, it’s a song that starts off with musical potential before quickly crashing back into unalloyed silliness. I enjoyed listening to this, but I don’t think I’ll ever listen to it again. 2/5

Omfg I’ve just added ‘Caught by the Fuzz’, ‘Lose it’ and ‘Sitting Up Straight’ to my running playlist, man alive. The guitar solo in Sitting Up Straight made me want to put a chair through a window. I actually might given the current climate. I give those tracks solid 4s, rest of the album gets a 3.

Another new band and album! My first spin was a weak half-listen in which I prematurely dropped this trio into a pop punk category that I typically have no time for. But thankfully after a deeper listen, I was awakened to the radical statement that is "I Should Coco". After needing to calm down from I'd Like To Know, Caught By The Fuzz, and Mansize Rooster, the fourth song, Alright, helped me to really taste the British flavour and artistic ingredients with a fresh palette. What first felt simple transformed into a complex mutation of themes and sounds including bells, strings, organs, drums, and more. I am so stoked to have learned of this playful rock album! That is one of the wonderful truths about full albums - the more intentional the listen, the more you begin to hear. These strikingly manic mood shifts span a much broader spectrum than realized, and the musicianship & creativity is far more diverse. I really dig Strange Ones and the surprise harmonica in Time! While I truly appreciate every single song on the record, The Sofa Of My Lethargy showcases the breadth of writing and instrumentation that I missed the first time around. At the end, Time To Go is a pleasantly Beatlesque surprise desert to conclude the 13 course meal! ** I taste notes of Supergrass in Cage The Elephant, The Lemon Twigs and The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets? **I also was reminded how easily we can label or judge things before we know anything about them. Music is always a guiding light for me in this area.

A few bops here and there but nothing I would go back to

I was ready to really hate this based just on the album cover. Seemed like it was going to be real miserable. Guess what? It's a ton of fun! They have serious Fratellis energy.
