Simple, energetic, youthful. I only knew Alright from Clueless. Think I might be too old to enjoy this.

Kinks for 90s kids

Perfectly good for what it is. I was only really familiar with the singles, but they were a competent and raucous trio. I doubt I’d revisit it, and it is hardly essential listening in my opinion, but it wasn’t too bad.

It wasn't my ideal album when it comes to rock. It had some complexity in the latter half of the album in terms of the instrumentals that combine with the emotion. But at the end of the day, the album was not what I would choose to listen too.

This was meh.

I thought the first 3 tracks were the same song, given how similar they were. Then came “Alright”, which is an absolute tune and at least offered something different than the first 10mins or so. The rest went back to being boring.

Yet another bland brit pop album on here. Giving it +1 star in that it's slightly different than the rest, but I can only take so many oasis wannabes

I don't think I want to Coco. This album is not bad, but there's not much to like about it either. Just kind of ok. Mansize Rooster and Strange Ones were the highlights. Best song: Strange Ones

This album makes me want to frantically jump around my room !! Fav song is ‘Alright’.

More 90s crap. Seriously the 90s sucked. The best you can say about this album is it doesn’t make you mad or annoyed, it just doesn’t make you feel anything, which is about as good as 90s music gets.

It's funny seeing an album and a band and have never heard of either, and then listening to it and realizing you recognize vaguely some of the songs. My distaste for Britpop only continues and I think it'll become active dislike over the court of this project. A few decent tracks like Alright, but not something I'd really be interested in listening to again. Mostly same drums and guitar, and only okay vocals.

It's a youthful album, but I am not sure that I ultimately enjoyed it. Not my type of music

Highlights: Alright, Lose It, Time A goofy effort that was neither all that funny nor memorable. It was just ok. The style is messy and loud which kinda even annoyed me at certain points (for example on Strange Ones). Not a lot of highlights, but the rest isn't all that bad - it was just extremely meh. Overall I'm not revising this and I don't think I'll stick to anything other than Alright.

Ya. I'm going to have to hard pass on this one. Like Green Day, Cage the Elephant, and so many bands that sound like this, there is the occasional catchy tune but overall this project reinforces that I am just not a fan of this genre of music. Repetitive, noisy, in your face. It might have felt rebellious in the 1970s but by mid 90s was played. 2/5

The first three songs were pretty good and I knew their biggest hit. What I don’t know is why I should listen to the whole album. It’s not that relevant.

Best Song: Alright This is one of those albums that is easily described as derivative, dull, and passionless. It's almost like if a moment in time was used when punk became grunge and then grunge became poppy punk. I always thought it was Seven Mary Three and even Silverchair but this really truly embodies it. 2/5.

I'm sure it was exciting when it came out. They're super talented and clearly listen to great bands. But it sounds like, at this point, they were just chasing sounds instead of making music. Most of it is drenched in the superficiality of punk. But punk isn't a sound; it's an attitude, an approach to music that eschews technical talent and insists on authenticity. Most of this album sounds like technically gifted (prodigious given their ages) musicians carefully aping their idols - which makes it decidedly unpunk. It's more Toy Dolls or Weezer than Buzzcocks. Alright is different - it's a great SONG that hints at what these guys are capable of. And when they begin exploring psychedelia towards the end of the album it gets interesting. But for my money, Supergrass didn't completely figure out what they were supposed to sound like until Life On Other Planets. That's the album that everyone should hear before they die.

Messy, british punk! I can clearly hear The Rolling Stones, The Strokes and even some Beatles in their songs. Alright is one of those songs that everyone knows but nobody knows who sings it or where they heard it. Many songs sound like they belong in a movie about reckless teens. Favorite so far is Caught by the Fuzz. Not an album I could listen to all day though, as all the songs sound the same and it can be a bit overstimulating.

We're Not Supposed To is now in my top ten list of the most annoying fuckin songs I have heard.

Good first half, poor second (opposite of Leeds last night). Only Alright.

Listened to it twice, and I still just did not like it (and I got fed up with it at exactly the same point in the album both times: the harmonica entrance). Every second I just wanted to be listening to other bands this sounded like (and got really annoyed that I wasn't). Did not get a sense that this band knows who they are.

This sounds like a Britpop band in 1995. Kinda like they mashed T-Rex and the Kinks with some punk influences (Buzzcocks?) into the Britpop mold. Youthful exuberance indeed. I _should_ like this, given that I was generally into UK bands in the 90s (mind you more 'arty' bands like Slowdive, Belle and Sebastian, and such). I missed this one, which is perhaps why it isn't clicking with me. No nostalgia to attach to it.

I only listened to part of this; it was not really my thing. 90s alternative, but the few songs I listened to all seemed the same to me.

This album is definitely of it’s time. It fits well in 1995. It’s not my jam though. Do I hate it? Not at all, it just doesn’t move me. The single, “Alright,” is great, though!

This album sounds like all of the 90’s bands playing at the same time.

When even these mid-tier Brit poppers are something I should hear before I die, then maybe I need to reassess my relationship to my mortality. I mean, poppy, energetic, old Who and Kinks derivatives, but even the big hit--which was so ubiquitous in 1995(ish?)--is pretty weak sauce.

Never really got into Supergrass as at that time the musical land they sought to conquer was squarely in the hands of Oasis, Blur, Suede and Stereophonic’s. So as far as I was concerned there was little or no room for a band who essentially sounded the same to make an impression. So I largely ignored them. Nothing I hear on this album makes me believe that I missed out. A band of the time but overshadowed by numerous other bands who were a lot better. 2/5 19/1/26

Da sind 2-3 okaye Songs dabei, ansonsten war es mir auf Dauer zu anstrengend (vielleicht auch einem langen Tag geschuldet).

Hat mich gar nicht abgeholt. Vor allem diese fürchterliche Lo-Fi-Produktion hat gar nicht zu dem eigentlich ganz netten Indie-Sound gepasst. Zwei ganz gute Hits sind für mich trotzdem dabei gewesen, aber abgesehen davon war das hier nix.

High energy student indie pop, which has its moments but like the Arctic Monkeys, not really something I'd seek out or even dance to in a club or wherever.

The one hit makes sense

Driving rhythms are boppy but this album really leans on "Alright"--would give it a 1 without it probably, though I appreciate that a lot of the album's fusions were I assume way ahead of its time.

Alright is a great tune and a couple others are nice to hum along to - but if I was at a gig where they played this I'd be desperate for them to just get to Alright.

This was so boring. It felt like once I heard both songs I’d heard them all. I got halfway through the album and just skimmed through the rest.

Sounds a lot like the Buzzcocks! But they're doing something similar 20 years later, so I'd file this as "footnote of 90s britpop" and move on. Also, "Alright" is annoying. There, I said it.

I always confuse supergrass with supertramp. The way they sold Alright to every commercial and show on tee vee means I could stand to never hear it again. I love britpop and there’s lots to like here but they were outshined by all the other britpop stars in the sky

I thought u had never heard of this group until I heard Alright. I had always thought that was a song from the 60’s. There are some ok songs but absolutely nothing to write home about.

I’d never heard of this band and album… until I got to Alright. Wow. Pretty iconic and popular song. I like it though, it’s good. Strange Ones, Time and Time To Go are pretty good. 2

Kitschy, forgettable. Don't understand what qualifies this as "standout" enough to prove meaningful to music history. Please enlighten me.

I had not listened to this album in more than 20 years. I didn’t care much for it then and after listening again, nothing has changed. It sounds outdated and old fashioned now. It simply does not hold up 30 years later. Personally, I would not call Supergrass a Britpop band. They were just a rock band who happened to be around during the Britpop era. It’s like calling REM a grunge band, just because they were contemporaries of Screaming Trees and Nirvana. It’s not accurate. In fact, this album is an insult to the memory of Britpop. The singer overdoes the British accent to such a comic degree that the System Of A Down shouter would tell him to cool it with the exaggerations. His voice really is annoying. Musically, there is some good stuff here, but it’s mostly undone by the histrionic chaos of the record. “Alright” is one of the most irritating songs ever recorded, “Caught By The Fuzz” is a bad rip off of late 70s punk, “We’re Not Supposed To” literally made me say out loud “What the f*ck is this?” and “Time” is so boring that even Dave Matthews would reject it. The only bright spot on this album is “Lenny”. People will give this a 5/5 review just because of the nostalgia, but it’s not a good record. At least I know that I was right all those years ago.

I hate Brit-pop. That has become more and more evident the more I work through this project. All of the songs sound the same in a bad way. Nothing interesting, kind of whiny.

Honestly thought this album was pretty obnoxious but respect to em.

Songs vary wildly in quality. Some are mastered well and have a good melody, some very much do not. Instrument choices are sometimes odd and can ruin a song.

Britpop is SO overrepresented on this list.

It's fine, it's of the era, it's well done, it's got some sick punk progressions but it's like a two for me. I should have rated Janis Joplin lower haha.

I’m in love with the Coco. HIT MY PLUG that’s my cholo. The 2015 song by uhh whoever that person may be springs to my mind for the second time this week. Awoken like a long dormant giant, the second most popular song about being in love with drugs of 2015 lives in my mind like a squatter. There couldn’t be a dumber song. It’s the champ. This album cover upsets me, and I doubt this will be good. They got the guy who does caricatures down at the pier some acid, he drew up the cover and now we have to endure what lies beneath. Do I dare peek? I’d Like to Know - Where the Arctic Monkeys were unsure, Supergrass is certain. They’re pretty British aren’t they? Good start. Caught by the Fuzz - Ehh this is fine. Skateboard video game soundtrack music. That would’ve been my favourite genre 20 years ago. Mansize Rooster - Dinosaur. Song about dinosaurs. Presumably. Alright - Noooo. This is the big hit and it’s the worst song so far. Lose it - Excellent track. The bass is really strong on this record, and I like the effects on the vocals for this track. What a boring review. Lenny - NOT LENNY!!! Strange Ones - I am getting so distracted during this. Why? I guess it’s kind of boring. Sitting Up Straight - Some nice melodic moments in this track but overall more of the same. She’s So Loose - Excuse me? We’re Not Supposed To - Alright, British minions passages. Time - Not the Pink Floyd song from what I can tell. Holy hell this song sucks. Sofa of my Lethargy - Everybody like couches. Don’t call it a sofa though. That feels American. It’s a couch. Perhaps a chesterfield. Is that a couch. Who cares. I’m bored, this review is providing nothing. Let’s wrap it up fellas. I really hate this Happy Gilmore outro music. Time to Go - Yes, yes it is. Too long. The energy died about halfway through and I had to revisit tracks after I realized a few had passed without thought. Is that my fault? Probably partially, but it also doesn’t happen all the time. I hated the last few tracks and I don’t care for this album all that much. It was fine. There were strong spots, but overall, a forgettable entry into the musical canon that will escape me the second I leave this tab. Unlike that Coco song. Quite annoyed me in the end unfortunately. I did go in with biases thinking I was getting some luke warm chirpy brit pop/indie stuff. I was delighted at first when it sounded like a buzzcocks record for a few tracks. The second half of the record really grates on me every time though. I feel like it does turn into that too-cool indie pop sound and I really struggle with it. Maybe on another day?

Special, unique band...

Another band of which I was completely unaware. It was an easy listen, but not something for which I see a need to add to my collection, sorry.

Potato. Croquette. It was alright. There was a surprising amount of variation in the second half of the album but it didn’t necessarily make it any more interesting. For me it was sufficiently boring to fall below a 3. The only real highlight was “Alright” as it’s a song I heard tons of times growing up but didn’t actually know who performed it or even what it was called.

My first reaction to the album is that the mix is quite murky. There is poor instrument separation and a lack of clarity on the vocals which are not as forward in the mix as you would expect. An amorphous wall of noise is not my favoured production style. That being said, there is a rawness to the sound that is reminiscent of grubby live venues in small towns which I quite enjoy. The album isn't bad, but it swiftly faded into a background buzz of nineties noise that I was pretty bored with by the end. I think if you want mid nineties britpop/rock there are plenty of better alternatives, so I would question why this should be a bucket list album.

Yeah, this is a good 90s brit pop album. Lots of energy, great catchy songwriting, well-produced. parts of some songs are interesting. There's enough 90s brit pop on this list. I did not need to hear this before I die. I have enough 90s brit pop in my regular rotation too so this won't even make it to my liked songs.

Yeah, I definitely had a different ‘90s experience than the mopes who got this album in their six-CD Columbia House starter kit.

I knew Alright already. Although not other songs jumped out at me, the album was overall fine. I liked the instruments more than anything else.

Turns out I only know one Supergrass song - even though they are so familiar sounding. Glad I didn’t go to see them at Glastonbury and just wait for them to play Alright! Fave song Time - love the blues bass

the song from clueless (on which the chopsticks piano riff and lounge guitar let the vocal cheese work). goes right through me. no ebb and flow. unearned expenditure of energy. makes me feel like the face on the left. like i know this was intended to be fun and rocking, yet i just ended up constipated. or maybe like the face on the right, exhausted and baggy-eyed from a night of torrential diarrhea. can't decide which. and the more i look at this album art, the more it annoys me. also, weirdly sequenced. they change it up a bit with the last three, but it's too little too late. by then i don't believe them.

A britpop DJ friend recommended this to me as she knew I was an indie rock fan with punk roots. The thinking was, I imagine, lots of hooks, even more energy, not afraid to rock the fuck out, still British. But hoo boy, even when I was 21, this was a bit of a tough sell, just too much of a sugar rush.

Oh that's the band that makes that one song.

This album isn't groundbreaking in any way - it's fairly easy to draw direct lines from this record back to The Kinks and The Jam, two obvious forebears. In addition, the singer's voice isn't particularly distinctive and the arrangements don't vary much from song to song, so sonically nothing really stands out. There are a few decent songs scattered throughout ("Caught By The Fuzz", "Strange Ones", "Time") but overall the record suffers from being too much of being an imitation of other, better bands.

This process is making me listen to far too many mediocre Britpop albums. In my lenient phase I might have given this a 3 for Caught By The Fuzz and the video for Alright but really I would have been ignoring the blandness of the rest of it.

Britpop always sounds whiny to me, and this is no exception. It's better than Oasis. They added a bit of early Beatles sound to it that I kinda liked.

Do you like rock music? If you do then this album is for you. I don´t like this album. There voice suck, the album cover sucks,the lyrics suck, and the beat is decent. I would not recommend this album there way better albums out there.

Do you like Alt bands? Supergrass is an English alt band, they have an album called "I should coco". It's not one of their best albums but they do have a song that has been featured in lots of commercials. It's called "Alright". This album has a catchy bass line that you can hear unlike some bands that mute the bass but say you can hear it. the Drumming is very good. I recommend this album.

I remember when this came out and they were the talk of the town. I tried it then and couldn't get into it even though I was open to it. All these years later I still find it average at best. The album has energy and some hooks. "Caught By The Fuzz" and "Alright" are obvious fan favorites based on the listen counts on Spotify, but I don't remember either one and '95 was right in my musical wheelhouse! "Time" was the only song I truly enjoyed. I'm not sure how this makes the Top 1001 - it has it's moments, has some cool production value, but this didn't influence anything that came after it, there are no radio hits, no one mentions Supergrass as a top 90's band, the vocals and songs are just better than average, nothing stands out for me. I could have died without ever hearing this one.

"Alright" is sort of alright but the rest isn't.

This album sounds like music that plays in a shitty Adam McKay movie. I got tired of being yelled and squealed out across the first half of the album. Some of the more focused numbers were solid, but a lot of the tracks felt too eclectic. I feel like this chaotic songwriting gets marketed as 'high-energy', but it is just all over the place to me. The second half of the album was more enjoyable, from She's So Loose onward. The songs slowed down, there was more variety in the instrumentation, and the melodic and rhythmic ideas were more cohesive. The lyrics were not particularly noteworthy, but that does feel a bit asinine given that the lyrics aren't generally at the forefront of this genre. In saying this, this album does not seem particularly special, especially when sat next to its peers from the same year like Melon Collie, What's The Story... etc. Overall, it was okay, but nothing incredible, and I won't be listening to it again.

Wow, this list has frontloaded us with a lot of British Pop-Rock albums. Surely there must only be a few of them left at this point, right? While I think this album is going to get grilled pretty harshly by our group due to britpop fatigue. I don't think there was any salvaging this one to begin with. Maybe I'm just feeling too cynical as well. But a majority of the songs in this album feel too repetitive. I get that this is a pretty basic criticism that can be applied to pop in general. But a lot of the first half of this album just felt like a selection of 1 minute chorus loops with some basic instrumentals to feed itself together with. More than any I have heard in a while felt really desperate to create a catchy hit song. With most of them just feeling forgettable. In my darkest moments of basic indifference to this music, just as I was hoping for something interesting to happen with the album. The monkeys paw finally curled and gave me the song 'We're not supposed to'. These guys were real innovators I tell you, doing an Alvin and the Chipmunks edit of one of their own songs back in 1995. I also thought it was funny how they tried to do a bit of an artsy flourish by having the instrumentals of Strange Ones fade naturally into the beginning of Sitting up Straight. Because for whatever reason they thought it would be nifty if these two generic britpop songs just melded together my brain even more than they already would have. Sofa of Lethargy was probably the closest thing on this album to something I would put on one of my play lists. That along with a few of the catchier tracks at the start are the only things making me give this a lenient 2 grade. Highlights Lenny Alright Sofa of Lethargy

Another Britpop album. 1001 albums that some poms think I should listen to, as much as I like British music this shit is getting to be cultural imperialism. I'd Like To Know is a solid, frenetic track but ultimately forgettable with nothing lyrics and okay vocals. Good opener, if it's indicative of the rest of the album then it'll at least be a /fun/ listen. Caught by the Fuzz is supposed to be a song about getting caught with hash but let's be real, these guys are british so it's probably about fucking underaged girls. Mansize Rooster is more of the same: fast-paced, energetic and boppy stuff. All these songs probably were necessary for dealing with the hell of living with John Major as your PM in Nonce Island. Alright is the most successful single from this album, peaking at number 2 which is pretty huge considering 1995 had stiff competition (all britpop slop) really the only interesting to say about this song. The rest of this album I really just glazed over, I can’t interface with this I think I might have britpop fatigue. The songs are competent and listenable but utterly forgettable. Lose It is my favourite song from this album and it’s a merciful 2m36s and it’s fine. 5/10 God save us and deliver us from Britpop

As an American this sounds so derivative and uninspired. It's not a bad album, but I feel like I've already listened to this album a few times already on this list. Not essential at all.

I used to think Supergrass were one of the better Britpop bands, but this album has aged poorly, not least the song “she’s so loose” which reeks of 90’s lad culture.

One hit wander

Hmm, I initially thought Supergrass were one hit wonders... Anddd they still are!

Sofa was boring, Time to Go reminded me a bit of the Beatles and Oasis. Overall not as interesting as either.

Alright is such a classic, just top tier song. The rest of the album doesn’t live up to how good that one is, but it’s not bad either.

There were a lot of songs (*?) that I didn't know whether I liked them or not. The vocals were a hit-or-miss depending on the song and the lyrics generally didn't impact me. The second half of the LP turned it around though. The lyrics were more impactful and the vocals were more appealing to me. The instrumentals were consistently good throughout the entire LP, which was nice. Not something I'd usually listen to, but glad to have gave it a try!

Would Supergrass have had a career if Hugh Grant hadn't been caught with a hooker and they opportunitistically put the mug shot on the cover of their debut single, 'Caught By The Fuzz'? I'm not sure. They certainly had snappy pop songs but more on the annoying side than catchy for me.

Why is this album here? Just absolutely generic.

This hasn't aged well. Was a fan at the time, but hearing it again it feels like that typical Britpop style of throw loads of old (largely seventies) rock bands / tropes against the wall and see what slides down. I guess the juvenile lyrics appealed more when I was a lot younger, too. For teen angst, give me Buzzcocks or The Undertones any day.

This album sounds like those generic rock music that all bands were releasing around the year 2000. I like bands that have their own distinctive sound and it could be that I haven't gotten use to listening to this band but it was overall a bit meh, nothing special.

First guess: I'm not familiar but will recognize something from this. Sure enough, I was right. Some of it is cool, but it's SO upbeat, it feels sugary. I'm diabetic and I need insulin listening to this.

There is nothing wrong with pop music. If it is just about a good beat and catchy hooks, I can see why this album and group were apparently so popular. Didn't really do much for me though. One listen was enough.

There seems to be an identity crisis with this album. It starts almost like ska with lots of energy but it turns into generic rock with lots of feedback and distortion. Also song structures just dont seem to exist here, which is fine, if the music is good. Supergrass more like Super Ass

I spent the first half wondering why it made the list, then I heard “Alright” and knew this was a one hit wonder album. The sped up song sounded kind of cool but that’s about it. “Alright” is a good song at least

Lightweight 90’s britpop

Alright is alright. The rest of this is too noisy for me. They are trying to be punk, but this is closer to frat rock. I really enjoyed the part where it got quiet, once I turned it off.

some good songs, some miserable

I'm not really digging it. It sounds like a group trying to meld punk with 60's beach music (at times). Some songs are listenable, but in general, It's just not working for me.

Maybe it's because of the string of albums that I've drawn this week, but another album that was fine, had a few moments - but nothing I would classify as being an album that I needed to hear before I died... Apparently the Supergrass genre is Britpop/Alternative - but short get-to-the-point songs is what this album contains - which again, was fine - but nothing earthshattering for certain... Best songs IMO were "Lose It" & "Lenny" early in the album, and "Time" & "Sofa Of My Lethargy" near the end of the album... At 6-minutes, "Sofa" is the only one that really stood out as a bit different than the others - plus like that song title - so there's that...

It’s fast, but I didn’t like it very much except a few of the final songs like the couch one which had a good vibe. two because I didn’t actively dislike it, just didn’t like it. It’s drummer gets a serious work out playing this live.
