Reviews (page 7 of 13)

love it bec i think i love brit pop rock

Clash debut. Prob more important than the Sex Pistols tbh. Songs and attitude. Strong 4

The opening 3 tracks on this record are amongst the best album openers of all time. Not their best record but I mean, The Clash... ugh, I'll give it a 4 but it's really a 4.5

good not great Favorite Tracks: Janie Jones, London's Burning, Career Opportunities 4/5

I enjoyed the sound, it's great rock, but the songs weren't outstanding enough to warrant more than a 4.

I remember growing up with London Calling in my house, but not this one... should have been both.

Never listened to the full album and it was surprisingly easy listen. I can imagine how it would have hit back then, as now it's just an another "classic". I have always avoided the punk scene, but this was better than expected.

Simply great music

I love this!! I love the Brit punk feel to it all.

Punk-rock. Ningún megahit. Un 4.

Janie Jones is a classic but I also like Deny, solid album, a great listen

1. Janie jones- great drum beat, very upbeat, strong bass great vocals, nice start to the album, catchy tune (added to playlist) 8/10 2. Remote control- nice guitar, love the vocals, loved the bass upbeat, love the lyrics “they got no money they got no power” amazing guitar solo very suitable not strong, lyrics talk about m/c Britain models which i strongly agree with 8/10 3. I’m so bored with the u.s.a- good beat, and guitar playing, again his vocals are on point, love the lyrics very real talks about society in a raw way, probably about political issues around that time(cold war) catchy (added to playlist) 8/10 4. White riot- nice guitar playing, again very raw lyrics about society, political about power instrumental on point with the song (fast and angry) (liked the song) 7/10 5. Hate & war- instrumentals all on point, again political based lyrics made me laugh! loved the bass 6.5/10 6. Whats my name- upbeat, not too keen on the vocals on this one, but can tell the angst he is expressing, which makes the song seem quite heated (respectfully) does drag a bit 6/10 7. Deny- loved the guitars, and bass, very upbeat, loved the lyrics, loved the background vocals, (added to playlist) 8/10 8. London’s burning- not keen on his voice on this one, seemed a bit annoying, but the instruments were on point which probably saved the song for me as well as the lyrics blatantly taking the piss out of British culture- 5.5/10 9. Career opportunities- loved the lyrics “do you wanna make tea at the BBC” made me laugh upbeat, loved how this is exposing the life of the working class and the realities that they face (liked the song) 7/10 10. Cheat- nice drums, loved the “i get violent when i’m fucked up” strong guitar and bass, nice guitar solo love how it slightly faded out (liked the song) 8/10 11. Protex blue- very fast paced, loved his vocals on this one, nice slight solo, liked the lyrics (liked the song) 6/10 12. Police and thieves- liked the change in rhythm/beat at the beginning again love the lyrics exposing authorities, vocals not strong for me on this one became a bit annoying, but instrumentals very strong on this one especially bass, loved the layover of guitars near the end, (liked the song) 6.5/10 13. 48 hours- loved the bass on this, seems catchy, however a bit repetitive- 5/10 14. Garageland- not keen on the harmonica, loved the drums on this as well as guitars, loved the backing vocals, “ i dont wanna hear about what the rich are doing” highlight lyric of the whole album liked the vocals on this one, 5.5/10 The album for me was very strong, i loved how it highlighted life in a working class embedded ruling class Britain, which highlights topics about the police, the rich, and what life was like as a w/c person around that time, subjects about the war especially the usa and the cold war were a very valuable moment for me on this album fav song jainie jones and i’m so bored with the usa least fav- london’s burning (didnt hate it) Overall album rating- 6.7/10

poignant political lyrics delivered with catchy melodies, loud ass guitars, and and fucking attitude. production is perfect. the bass is bouncy and supports the guitars while being its own voice. great classic punk record. one of the first and most important. police and thieves is pretty long and honestly could’ve done without it though.

Punk-rock. Ningún megahit. Un 4.

This is a great punk album, songs that stand up and attitude. Unlike a lot of punk they could really write a tune.

Iconic and important album in the history of punk but gets a bit repetitive at times. I get why it should be listened to but not going to be one I listen to regularly.

Light 8

Really enjoyed this one!

Heck yea now THATS some good punk! i think i actually prefer this to london calling, which was recommended to me greatly by a friend who loves punk a whole lot. so i guess this album made me feel happier with being opinionated about punk. i compare it to the dead Kennedys because they covered i fought the law, and i think where the dead Kennedys are edgy and witty the clash instead presents this very honest, cincere plea to class solidarity. its just delightful. Not all tunes but mostly !

They were doing so much in a genre that really didn’t require that much at the time and went some much further than what was required, experimenting with new techniques and all of it worked so well to make such an enjoyable debut album. One of the best punk rock albums of all time. 4/5

I enjoyed this

Cornerstone of punk. Coming out of the 60s pop sound, this is just a bunch of guys slamming their instruments and screaming as best as they can. And it's great.

Decent punk album init

The straightforward rock&roll with shouty vocals are not really my thing, but this was quite well done.

Absolutely fine punk album.

A really solid album, although I do think I understand why it is not the favorite generally, a good beginning to a great career.

Great debut from my fav punk band

I like the clash but this album is kind of boring. The songs are too fast to remember due to their dull hooks.I think the ramones are better at writing short memorable songs. The album is still good though, white riot is a good song though it’s lyrics confuse me.It’s a 3.5 so I’ll give it a 4

1977, a fitting year where two numbers clashed and a fitting year for the beginning of a wild journey from westway to the world for the only band that mattered. Like most eventual world-beating, heart on sleeve entities, The Clash were a garage band with sights set on much bigger settings, regardless of how bored they were with it. Tales of woeful chances to step out of the systemic rut, aspirations of sex only to get oneself off, faithful adaptations of a song rooted in a genre that never mingled with the punk mindset prior and the collar grabbing damnations of classist, racist ideologies that is still misinterpreted today. The world at large would be all the worse had this album not gotten made, with its thirty-minute minutes of punk masterclass that would give way to the chameleonic shifts towards bigger and greater compositions down the line. This is Radio Clash from pirate satellite. Favorites: Janie Jones, Remote Control, I'm So Bored With the U.S.A., White Riot, What's My Name, Career Opportunities, Cheat, Police & Thieves, Garageland.

Really solid punk rock album with mostly shorter songs and plenty of energy. There is not a ton of variety except for the reggae sounding Police and Thieves but the strength and brevity of the songs makes this a non issue.

After glancing at the track list and seeing nothing I recognized, I thought I wouldn't love this one. Happy to say I was very wrong. This is a Clash I didn't know for sure existed, but I assume had to at some point. Very enjoyable listen. Standouts: Janie Jones, I'm so Bored with the U.S.A., Police & Thieves

Top 3 Songs: Police & Thieves Remote Control Career opportunities

Not only did 1977 see the Sex Pistols staunchly oppose the bollocks, Wire fly their Pink Flag and Buzzcocks launch their debut EP, but it also saw perhaps the most enduring British punk band of all come searing onto the scene. In the spirit of its surroundings, "The Clash" is raw, riotous, and rough around the edges. At first I struggled to get on board with it, as this debut lacks the polish or genre-hopping which the band came to display later in their career. Mostly punk through-and-through, bar a six-minute cover of reggae track "Police and Thieves" (promising, if a little overlong). It's not an overwhelming classic, but what makes it a great, attention-grabbing debut? It's tightly wound and snappy: from the flurry of drums and slurred love-letter of "Janie Jones" through the knees-up crudity of "Protex Blue", it barely pauses for breath across its thirty-five minutes. Brevity is key, and the breathless playing from all members of the band suits it perfectly. It's catchy as hell: I was mostly drawn to the songs with Mick Jones on vocals, his higher register and more melodic tone grabbing me more immediately than Strummer's borderline-unintelligible rasp. "Remote Control" jangles its way down a major key progression with brazen confidence, culminating in an excellent outro, and "Hate and War" is an anthem for the ages. It's fiercely political: "White Riot"'s rally call to an apathetic white working-class is incendiary (not to be misunderstood as a call for a race war), and "London's Burning" seethes with abandonment and resentment towards those in power. Not to mention the excellent "Career Opportunities", perhaps the highlight of the whole set. Lithe, stuttering, scathing and charged, it's the sound of years of bottled up frustration with "the system" being released. Finally, it's the sound of an emergent band with a fully formed identity, remarkably sure of their place in the world. Pay attention to the closing manifesto of this album: The Clash are not joining all the young punks with their new boots and suits. They're a garage band, and they come from garage land. Even though this attitude is a little exclusionary in its own way, credit to Joe Strummer for calling out the fakers. Punk's finest hour begins here.

The classic early punk album. Speedy guitaring, angry lyrics. Short (32 min) but solid album. Standout is "White Riot"

Another great listen and such a pleasure to hear the two Clash albums so close together. Two years between them and the sound has matured so much. This album was a riot.

Not into classics, but I can appreciate it.

All day.

I liked this one more than combat rock. It feels more raw.

Great debut album. No bad songs at all. Interesting cultural commentary buried throughout. Working class guys with no other options. Strummers guitar and voice are so unique. Janie Jones, London's Burning, and Career Opportunities are standouts. London Calling is a masterpiece but this is an amazing debut album. Fantastic album.

Heeeell yeah. Now this is some clxssic punk. Much love

The clash know good musikk

Nice nice nice

Absolutely solid and a pivotal punk album, not a bad song on here

Man, why is punk always so boring? I just don't get it at al- wait, I actually like this? My partner just listened to this and said it was pretty boring, but I enjoyed my time with this album, even if the voices did annoy me a little sometimes. I can understand why this is a pretty important start, and enjoy it enough as is.

Enjoyed more than anticipated. Punk is fun!

The Clash are excellent and it's great to listen to an album of theirs that has no filler, because both "London Calling" and especially "Sandanista!" suffer greatly from that. However, the highs on this album aren't nearly as high as the two aforementioned albums and I can't even really name a least or most favorite song because they were all consistently like a 7.5/10.

It's like Green Day from the past. I did check out their later albums and liked them better, but it's interesting to see how basic punk hasn't changed much from these roots.

Fast pace, fun

Classic punk album. I enjoyed it but probably won't add it to regular rotation.

4 out of 5, great Punk Album. Standouts for me are Garageland, Janie Jones, & I’m so Bored with the U.S.A. Overall, my favorite track leans toward Police & Thieves, love the vibe and placement within the track list of that one. Excellent!

Sounds like early Blur without the ballads, which is to say, I guess I thought the first Clash record would be more “punk” or “raw” in its production and style. Instead this is pretty accessible and lots of fun. Will come back to this one.

Raw and load, reminiscent of the The Sex Pistols but a little more refined. A classic of UK punk.

A great first album from a classic band.

Just a good classic and formative punk album. I don't think it quite holds up to London Calling, but it's still great.

- Heard this before - Great album, not as good as Combat Rock and doesn't come close to London Calling but I would probably rate London Calling in the top 5 albums of all time - Fav songs: Police & Thieves, White Riot, Remote Control

Listening - Mon 13th Feb 2023, Bagni Di Lucca in Janines kitchen, breakfast, looking at mountains, before work.

Good album.

Good old school punk.

Great punk album, love the grittyness of the main singer. Had some tunes and grooves stuck in my head the whole day.

Yeah. Love it, no bullshit here

great songs, most of them hold up. couple of boring ones like Deny though

Really good but way more mellow and mid tempo than I expect from my usual pu k tastes.

Filling a gap in my knowledge, as I've only listened to London Calling in full. Looks like this one came before, and it reflects in the sound. Feels like a more straightforward punk album overall, less melodic and hooky than what I know. Liked the album overall, but a lot of the songs seem to run together. White Riot caught me off guard, sounds like something right wingers would misinterpret the lyrics to and use for their rallies.

The prototype, evidently, of song structures, vocal stylings, and sonic palette for my beloved Dead Milkmen.

Solidly enjoyable listen despite me not being able to make out most of the lyrics. Quite fun!

The Clash would go on to do much greater things, but this album was a hell of a start. Far more typical late 70s UK punk, and while some tracks are forgettable, others are essential listening for any fans of the band, my favourites "Janie Jones", "White Riot", "London's Burning", "Career Opportunities", or their accomplished cover of the reggae tune "Police and Thieves".

Its a classic. They rlly put the punkrock on the map

The only Clash album that I was familiar with was, of course, London Calling, but this was a nice, catchy batch of songs that were pleasant to listen to. Not as frenetic as I was expecting, but I liked it being a little more subdued. Not to say this album is quiet by any means, but it doesn't overwhelm you. A good first album by The Clash.

When I saw this album, I immediately thought to myself, "Great. British poopheads today." BUT... they were pretty damn good. Even if you have a clandestine hatred for the clash and other early british punks or whatever, this album has some pretty rhymical songs that are groovy, baby! Don't pay any attention to the fact that you can't make out the words, it's GROOVY, babY!

Enjoyed the most so far. Catchy and distinct songs. Downloaded 3.

Upbeat af

Oh a bit more Bri'ish innit?

Þetta var föstudagsorkan sem mig vantaði! Frábær plata!

I think it's a good album, some of its songs are catchy, personally I give it a 7/10

The beginning of the Clash! This album is is the "more punk rock" sounding of the 2 albums we have listened to so far. The Clash is a great band in general and this was a solid debut album. Really enjoyed Janie Jones, I'm so bored with the USA, What's my name, Police & Thieves with Cheat being my favorite of this album. Solid listen, but not the best of the Clash. 3.5 for me. Will code as 4 because it is the Clash!

4.5 Short, sweet and to the point. Exactly how I like my punk. It’s astonishing how influential this album (and LC, of course) has been on punk rock and music in general. Punk can be catchy and fun but still be punk. If I hadn’t heard London Calling first this would be an easy contender for #1 favorite Clash album. This album deserves all of the praise it gets. Will probably buy on vinyl.

4.5 Fuck yeah, love The Clash (as evidenced in my London Calling review). Their debut is no London Calling, but it’s a damn good punk album. While I wouldn’t go as far as to call it the best punk debut, I would argue The Clash as one of the most consistently good punk bands - there’s not a bad entry across any of their five studio albums (yes, I mean five). Janie Jones is an excellent opener, and I’ve always loved Mick Jones’ WHOOooooaaaaooo that closes the track. I also adore White Riot, I’m so Bored with the USA, London’s Burning, and Career Opportunities, and consider them all to be punk staples. Not every track is a standout (not sure what’s going on in Protex Blue), but all fit the album nicely and keep the energy going. In fact, the only shift in sound on the album is the track Police and Thieves… and it does so in the best possible way. Not only is a solid take on a reggae track by its own merit, but in hindsight, it’s a bit of foreshadowing to the cross-genre fusion that the band would famously implement on their later albums. Fantastic album, and a great start to a legendary career.

Was gonna go 4 stars, but add a half star for Police and Thieves! 9/10

Pure raw energy.

I am pretty ashamed that I’ve never listened to a Clash album before from start to finish especially since growing up I was big Black Flag and Minor Threat fan. Love the energy, and there are so many catchy hooks. Although this isn’t their most well-known I would definitely listen to this again. I was surprised that Police & Thieves has some Reggae vibes. Standout tracks: White Riot

Great stuff.

Good stuff.

Not as good as London Calling, but that's quite a high bar. Those of us in the States couldn't get this until after London Calling anyway, so we were somewhat tricked into believing this was a follow up rather than the band's fucking debut. Spotify played Kiss Me Deadly by Generation X after this album and I almost thought it was still The Clash. Shoutout to Billy Idol!

An excellent opening album from the icons of punk.

4/5 for punk

I love The Clash but realized that 60% of my scrobbles are from London Calling. This one never stuck with me as much. At some point the UK version became the default used by streaming services and that kinda threw me; I liked Clash City Rockers, I Fought the Law, and (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais more than the songs they replaced.

I had this album as a teen and I saw them when they played locally (in Worcester, MA) in the early 80s. I really enjoyed them back then but haven't really listened to them for many years. This project has introduced me to more punk and related genres, so hearing this album again for the first time in a mighty long time helped me hear how The Clash brought in many other genres and influences to their music. Very cool, and very nicely done.

It feels strange that I've never listened to this album before, but I've always stuck to London Calling with the Clash. Compared to that, this album feels much less mature, but a lot of the elements that make London Calling great are starting to emerge here. This is a more straight-ahead punk album than LC, which drew on a broader array of influences. Still, these were the early years of punk, and this was a landmark album in that genre, even though it was overshadowed somewhat by the works of bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. I would certainly call this album better than Nevermind the Bollocks, which is a fun album but feels even less mature than this, though The Ramones self-titled album is the best of the three (despite the fact that this album has much more variation in song construction than The Ramones). This is classic bored youth punk and was critical in helping define the genre 4/5

sometimes i like the clash sometimes I don't

gooddd

As usual with punk, loved the energy. A few bangers in there

Frankly, not as good or iconic as Combat Rock, but still defined a genre and a generation. Long Live the Clash!

This is nowhere near as good as London calling, but not a lot is. Straight down the middle punking.

Great punk album

Classic early punk.

HESINLUVWITRAWKANRAWLWHOA

Listened Before: Y So I've heard this one quite a bit, and I like it. As a punk fan its got everything. Political lyrics, IDGAF attitude, short songs, many songs! I loved this. 70s british punk is hit and miss for me but this one is good and probably better than their more famous "London Calling". Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: White Riot, 48 Hours

I’m surprised how much I loved listening to it. Very invigorating and still sounds great decades on.

j'ai vraiment apprécié, la voix et l'énergie me plaisent

Pretty good, the many varied sounds hatch a tech’s hell to mix

Quintessential punk rock band doing what they do best.

A bit on the samey side, but the style is absolutely fantastic, so it's hard to complain. Very raw, very political, way ahead of its time in terms of the. messaging, and most importantly, unapologetically authentic. London's Burning, I'm so Bored with the USA, Police and Thieves, and Garageland are all bangers

I knew a few of these songs from The Clash's greatest hits album. I didn't think I like a lot of old punk but this is fantastic. There's a lot of that 70s London sound in this as there were many songs that were reminiscent of The Who's work. I also don't think this sounded super messy like some punk can.

this is the punk i've been waiting for on this project!! there have been a fair amount of misses for me in the punk genre as i've gone through the list. i'm more used to the clash's more established years, where i think you could argue they had a more popular and refined sound, but this album is so delightfully punk. strummer's vocals are grimy and not always clear. i admire songs like "i'm so bored with the USA," "career opportunities," and "police & thieves," among others, for their harsh criticism of society and politics. the clash had something to say in 1977 and were not afraid to say it. the anger comes through with their lyrics and, well, how darn fast they play their music.

THIS. This is my kind of punk. This is the punk I've been waiting for on this project. They are angsty and grimy, but their lyrics are smart and their music is actually well done. In other words, they're not just slamming on their instruments; they're actually making lyrical and musical statements. These things no doubt contributed to their success as (arguably) the first mainstream punk band (in the States, at least). And they're regarded as among the best punk acts because they simply are; they showed that punk didn't have to just be sloppy, unmitigated noise. They had the talent necessary to leave a true mark on punk music, even with this debut album. There's just no doubt in my mind why this album went down in history. If you listen to each band member's part as individually as possible, they all sound talented and they all sound like they're giving 120%, which is an important part of making impactful punk music, in my opinion. Also, props to "I'm so Bored with the USA", because honestly, same.

It’s The Clash, you’re guaranteed a good time. London Calling is the magnum opus, but this is the raucous debut that set us down that path to greatness. Respect for a fucking killer introduction to the world.

Great album.

A bit of nostalgia for sure. This is authentic punk - shouty and loud with a political slant. 'Police and Thieves' (the cover) is an indication of the direction they went in which is where I left them but seems to be predictably people's favourite song.

Heard before: yes It’s not their best, but I think you can hear clues to how great the band were going to be in the cover of Police & Thieves. Favourite tracks: White Riot, Janie Jones, Police & Thieves

When I think of early punk, I think of four bands: the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Misfits, and the Clash. They all have different approaches to punk, and each band is the master of their particular variation. But I think the Clash created a broader sound that revealed punk's versatility. "White Riot" is prototypical punk, a fast and dirty anti-establishment wall of sound that wouldn't feel out of place on a (or should I say "the only"?) Sex Pistols album. "Garageland" is similar thematically, but with a (comparatively) softer, more melodic tone reminiscent of the Ramones. But the unmistakable influence of reggae and ska is what really sets them apart. "Police & Thieves" is a cover of a reggae song by Junior Murvin, and it's my favorite track on the album. Give the original a listen, and you'll get an appreciation for how the Clash stood reggae on its ear and created their own unique brand of punk. And while they did it, they paved the way for one of my other favorite punk bands, Rancid. No Clash, no Rancid. And I'm sure we can say the same for a host of other bands.

Great album.

Not hard hitting, but I suppose at the time of release, it was something new. I'm surprised at how melodic it is for punk, and some of the lyrics are still applicable to today.

I'm not a huge fan of the radio singles that are so overplayed these days, London Calling and Rock the Casbah looking at you. This album was a great listen though, it's pure punk aside from Police and Thieves where you see some genre bending happening and that was a good cover. Great punchy album, Strummer is the quintessential punk vocalist and they really put it all out these on this album. Fav songs were Deny, White Riot, 48 Hours, Janie Jones. Lots of solid tunes really, none that I didn't like.

Always enjoy this record

Oon tykännyt tästä levystä jo pidempään ja toimii edelleen! 4/5

Some early punk rockin by one of the best to ever do it. I've actually never been a huge listener of the band but it would be hard to not respect them as pioneers of the genre and at the core even just good songwriters with a dirty sound. Highlights on the album for me: "Janie Jones" "I'm so Bored with the U.S.A." "What's My Name" If London Calling is a 5, then this one is a high 4.

Quite like the album, definitely a very important album for the time. If I heard this when it came out it would be an easy 8/9 due to its ‘rebellious’ nature. Overall though it’s not The Clash’s best but it paved the way for greatness, will give it a 7.6/10 definitely would listen to again but not top of my re-listen list.

This was a good and entertaining album. I knew a couple of songs. It was relatively short but that's a positive. I would listen to it again.

Prefs: Janie Jones, Remote Control, I'm So Bored With The U.S.A., White Riot, Hate and War, What's My Name, London's Burning, Career Opportunities, Cheat, Protex Blue, Police & Thieves, 48 Hours, Garageland Moins pref: Deny, l'effet bizarre sur Cheat et la production.

Sounds more like The Ramones type Brit-punk than I usually think of from The Clash. (A good thing IMO.) 4.5

Solid punk classic. I didn't find it to be quite the masterpiece everyone thinks. But a solid 4 from me.

Jako the clash. Clashy, innit.

Nema Clasha ispod 4

Half the length of London Calling, The Clash's self-titled still manages to pack plenty of material in. It's all more raw, mostly meat-and-potatoes, but there's surplus aplomb and plenty of small-scale genius moments.

Great punk rock album. Excited to have it over the weekend to listen to multiple times.

Timeless band. Great suggestion! Who could forget Should I stay or should I go? NIce to hear them again on 2022

Still as enjoyable as the first time I heard it.

One of the greatest punk albums of all time.

Cheat You punk. Spelled a bit different we all know that the name band is an onomatopoeia “Crash”, it sounds remind us of it, the essence, discord, revenge, freedom and so on. Revolution it’s a thing that impost in any kind of living society and its government, anytime will do, people are strange and they have rights to be. Anyway, if you’re not to punk music, this period before the 80s, it was fulfilled around rough vocals and tiny songs, that leave a message in transit, as rapid as it can. B

*smashes guitar*

Really enjoyed this one. Recognised a couple of the tracks, foot-tapping fun throughout, no bad tracks.

So good! Got to be one of the most perfectly formed bands ever, nobody can talk shit about The Clash. There's something that appeals to me about it being mostly punk rock, that laser focus bands can only have on their first album. But then they signal the sort of future branching our with that awesome Police & Thieves cover later on. That said, it isn't all killer no filler like London Calling, some of the songs just aren't as good, albeit still THE CLASH, so

Quality stuff, influential and lasting.

4-, decent album of the clash, awesome vibe, catchy melodies, I like it very much

I generally like the Clash and this album is no exception. There is something undeniably fun about their vibe

Love Career Opportunities. I already knew and loved some of these tunes - White Riot and the great cover of Police and Thieves mostly. Cool guitar on Cheat. Quite long for a punk album? Cool vocals on Protex Blue. Johnny Johnny! Ha ha. Fave Songs - Career Opportunities, Police and Thieves (always loved this).

Classic and iconic punk rock that has the ability to transport you right back to 1970s London. Standouts here are: • Janie Jones • Remote Control • What’s My Name • Police & Thieves

Very good band but i liked more other album of them ( give em enough rope)

I'm not a massive fan of punk but I like The Clash. Think thats because you get more than one style of music in their albums. A bit of punk, reggae and rock in 35 minutes. The UK version which is on Spotify is great but isn't as good as the US, missing White Man, Clash City Rockers and I Fought the Law. Still you get White Riot, Police and Thieves and Remote Control which are fantastic songs. The good thing about having two versions is that with the quality of new songs, you would see how The Clash would improve over a couple of years. 8/10 for the UK version 9/10 for the US version

Loved it!

Great album. Amazing to think this came out so close the the Sex Pistols...punk really blew up at the same time. The Clash are definitely my top 70's era punk band. 4.5/5

I didn't expect to like this but I did.

It's very impressive to listen to this album and how it sounds so new. All songs and lyrics still make sense today like when it was released. Punk is still great in the past and today.

69 The Clash - The Clash 14 tracks. Another exception to the rule, (can't be bothered to name their album), but it's not a patch on London Calling so maybe it's not an exception at all. It's harsh that everything else they did is compared to London Calling. 4/5

This is it! The original punk rockers. Attitude, riffs, a driving drum groove, that's all you need. Catchy as hell too, great for a fun time. I will say, though, that punk has been greatly expanded on (dare I say, improved?) in the years since this album and it almost makes me wished they pushed the envelop even more! Either way, I can get behind this sort of sound.

A banger, stole my dads vinyl for this

Great punk even if some of it feels a bit false

It's not as good as Combat Rock, but I'm going to take the controversial position of saying that this is better than London Calling. More immediate, more visceral, no sappy filler. Just a great punk album.

Short, but sweet. Definitely a preview of the punk band to come. The definitive '77 punk album (Sex Pistols need not apply.) Favorite song: Police & Thieves

The Clash as 'just' a punk band, before they spread their wings. It's much more limited in it's scope than their later output, but it does simple, 3-chord working class anger as well as any of their contemporaries did.

Super fun listen. Best track: White Riot

ayieet

By the end, it felt longer than it actually was. However, still a good album and the first half was really melodically catchy.

I was a bit young for The Clash but it is a great album if a bit lacking in production punch and consonants.

When I heard this a long time ago I thought it was a bit raw, but I can appreciate it a lot more now. The songs are catchy, the lyrics are killer “do you wanna make tea at the BBC?”, very political and of the moment. I can hear a Ramones influence in some of the songs and I like the fact that they switch up the vocals between Joe & Mick.

September 22, 2021 This was a fun energetic album and a classic for sure!

Honestly, I thought every song sounded like every other. I can hear the roots, the inspiration, for so many other albums and artists in this one.

Great classic punk album. Tons of bangers, and I can totally see how this group influenced the future of punk.

Not quite in their stride…. This is solid 3 and a half, but I’m gonna give it a 4 coz it’s the clash!!

A rock solid debut from the Clash which helped to prove that punk could be a bit more what the Pistols were doing

Leuke rock. Ga hier wellicht vaker naar luisteren

Classic Clash

It's The Clash, ya know?

Clearly a super influential album and still sounds remarkably fresh today. Difficult to really imagine the impact this album had at the time now we've been subject to endless imitations

Ridiculous amount of attitude. Joe Strummer is a cool character.

Album really shines after a few listens when the lyrics begin to come through to yankees like me. Classic punk with a lot to say about politics society and culture. Been a while since I listened to a full Clash album but it delivers more of a punch for me than one off listens of songs like London calling or fought the law etc. Janie Jones, Remote control, white riot, police and thieves 3.5

solid debut for punk rock sound.

4.3 - “I’m so boored of the USA!!” Fuck yea.

Good stuff. Never gone deep into early punk. Dig this

Surprisingly good. I don't usually listen to punk, but the album was really good despite the somewhat repetitive songs. Police & Thieves is also now on my private playlist :)

I like individual songs on this album but it's very repetitive to listen to the whole album at once

Actually really enjoyed it. Punk rock is not usually my thing, but it had a great sound and the lyrics weren't half bad.

Great album

Very clashy

Are The Clash the greatest British punk band ever? The band is part of the early wave of punk rock in the late 70s. High energy as you'd expect.

Love the Clash

Great sound. Modern. Years before their time.

When I was a punk teenager, I hated the Clash. Fuckin' poser major-label rockstar sellouts, maaaaaaan. This mainly came from Crass (true punx), who sang stuff like "CBS promotes the Clash / But not for revolution, just for cash" (see also: "they say we're trash / but the name's Crass, not Clash"). Nowadays, I don't care about that stuff. But this album doesn't mean anything to me, because I never listened to it. I also still feel that their later albums (which I've heard more often) are overrated - but I will decide about those when they turn up on this list... As for this 1977 debut: it's pretty good! It's a solid punk album, but with slightly more musicianship and flare than many albums from this era of punk. The 1979 American version looks a bit bastardised, so I'm going with the original tracklist. Some of the softer moments sound like The Jam (who I LOVE), while most of it has a harder punk energy. Despite what anyone may say, the cover of Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" is shit. It only works until you've heard the original, which you then realise it's just an inferior imitation of. That's the sign of a shit cover version.

Classic Clash

A blast from the past!

Wonder if these lads ever surfed. Exactly what you'd expect, it's G.

Yes some classic clash, although I prefer junior Murvin’s version of police and thieves.

hit the spot today! I give it twelve bananas

Solid album throughout. While nothing stands out above the rest as an incredible song, it doesnt drop off at the end like some albums tend to do. Lots of the songs sounded very similar which leads to the solid throughout;

This is one Clash album that I never listened to, and it was really cool to see what their original sound was like. "Police and Thieves," has always been one of my favorites of theirs, but I think that was the only song I recognized off of this album. Obviously not their best album but still great Clash tunes. They've got a leftist, antiestablishment bent to them that feels like more of an inspiring call to action for change as opposed to the Sex Pistols nihilistic attitude towards everything. That makes them the quintessential first wave British punk band for me. So yeah, anything from The Clash is going to be great. Including this album.

Son of a gun. Why have I never listened to this all the way through? Travesty.

Bon vieux punk old school.

Easy to see the influence this had on the entire genre afterward! Hugely influential and sounds pretty cool. Not my favorite clash stuff but I respect the energy and enjoyed the album! I feel I should rate higher because of the influence, but after listening, it still just feels like a 4!

A Derrick Catlin classic!

This was alternative rock before alternative was even a thing. Maybe even ahead of its time, doesn't really sound like a 70's album, but it proves just how influential it was back then.

Such a solid sound for being from the '70s...just feels iconic. I've listened to a few of these songs before, but it's just such a solid Punk Rock sound. It does grow a bit tiresome , as most of the songs have the same type of sound, but I bet if I heard this is 1977 my socks would have been rocked.

Great but not their best album. White Riot slaps and is socially conscious

Police & Thieves cover. Garageland. And I'm So Bored With the USA

Classic. Not a real deep, meaningful album in general, but this is at the heart of so much of my favorite music.

Production: 12/20 Songwriting: 14/20 Innovation: 15/20 Bangers: 20/20 Emotional response: 15/20 =76 Classic

Obviously a fantastic album. Not their best, but still really good.

Go Go Go Go!

Sokay. Nice and upbeat

Classic British punk rock. I enjoy British punk rock.

Good listen. Hadn't listened to their first album before. Very raw and full of energy. No complaints here

Imagine hearing this in '77...

Strong album

Like "Remote Control". Also, "Career Opportunities" is hilarious

Quintessential punk album.

Awesome. I think tone 5 stars it would need a little variety tho.

I loved hearing this album and feeling like some of the songs sounded like other bands or albums I heard, just because they were so influential for so many punk and punk-adjacent bands. The Clash is great

Fed punk plade.

Classic Clash Tunes on this album, a must own for any music fan.

fuck you i'm not listening to the fuckin clash. No wait, I was thinking of the Ramones. This was a pretty dope punk album. get at me.

A solid debut, and one of a few albums of 1977 to kick off the punk movement. Also "Police and Thieves" is the best punk song I've heard in long awhile.

Hate the clash but this isn’t a bad album for a bunch of posh boy pub rockers

Never been a big fan of the Clash, but I’ll give this a shot. Yep, this is about what I remembered. It’s not bad, but it still doesn’t do much for me. I dunno. Brit punk with reggae vibes from time to time. Again, not bad, and some of it’s a little catchy, but I get bored with it pretty easily. 7/10

Seth - Gang vocals, chants, melodies started then dropped this album was fun, yet taxing after awhile. You can hear a lot of today's emo/alternative has definitely at least listened to this album, in some capacity. A lot of influences better utilized by those who came after, imo. Literally I do not like a single track off the second half of the album. Logan - As a whole, it felt like the group couldn't decide to make a song with a message or just a random thought. Even in songs that had something new, it was dropped quickly. Seth - 3.8/5 Logan - 2.5/5

I understand it's inclusion here it just isn't something I would go back to repeatedly.

The highlight here is the remake of Junior Murvin's Police & Thieves, a punky flash of reggae influence that is carried on and improved with Living in Fame and One More Time on Sandinista and Armigideon Time on Black Market Clash.

The roots of punk rock.

More of a London Calling fan but a solid album

Not their best work, but thats to be expected from a debut album from one of the best punk bands of all time.

What a debut!

Not as good as london calling.

Exactly what I expected the first Clash album to sound like. Saved a few songs but can't imagine myself revisiting the album much otherwise.

It was okay - I listened during work. Pretty funky but still not something I would choose to listen to

It showcases a really original style, even the not so great songs are still fun to listen to. Highlights: Janie Jones, Deny, Career Op., Police and Thieves, Garageland.

Should i stay or should i go

I'm finding I just don't care for straight up punk music that much. It needs to have something else going on (post-punk, skate punk, hardcore, metalcore). So overall, solid punk record, just not really doing anything for me.

Cool album

Review - there are a few good tracks but honestly every time I try listening to a The Clash album that's not London Calling I'm hyper aware of the fact I'd be having a better time listening to London Calling. Score - 5.5/10 Need to listen? NO

Decent

Well this is fun

Don't like this album as much as their others, but I do like how unpolished this one is. Police & Thieves stood out. 2.5/5

Overall: 3.45 (rounded to 3) Consistency: 3.78 Originality: 4 Enjoyment: 3.5 Virtuosity: 2.5 1. Janie Jones - 5 2. Remote Control - 3 3. I'm So Bored with the USA - 5 4. White Riot - 4 5. Hate & War - 3 6. What's My Name - 4 7. Deny - 3 8. London's Burning - 5 9. Career Opportunities - 4 10. Cheat - 3 11. Protex Blue - 4 12. Police & Thieves - 4 13. 48 Hours - 3 14. Garageland - 3

Their later albums are better

early groundbreaking work, very raw and energetic. Favorites include Janie Jones and Career Opportunities.

One of, if not the best, 'punk' bands of the 70's. You can hear their influence on the music of so many artists that came after them.

i'm not sure why, but punk doesn't really grab me. its a fine listen but all the songs sort of just meld together

I feel like I should be rating this higher. It's a solid debut and a touchstone of early punk, and even the album cover just exudes cool. This just doesn't land with me as much as some of their later work - Janie Jones is a great opener, I'm So Bored is good too, but in totality there just isn't quite enough musical diversity to keep my interest for the whole album.

It was alright but not really my thing. Can’t really say much more than that so I won’t.

Not their best work and found it to be distinctly average in truth. It does a good job of capturing the energy that they bring but the songs just aren’t up to the same standard as something like ‘London calling’ or ‘Sandinista’ where the other Afro-Caribbean influences were more prominent.

Fun album that’s hard to hear as something other than a prototype of the amazing stuff to come. The riff on Protex Blue is nasty work for a song about safe sex.

Pretty decent punk rock. Some interesting lyrics and fast paced songs, vocally not brilliant but I don't think it's intending to be. No real highlights but a fairly good listen overall.

"Chris" album

I like this album but I like them with more variation, rather than just punk. It's still a super solid debut and important to the genre. 7/10

Good, but I’ve already forgotten it.

Less aggressive today than I think they would have intended, you can tell they listened to popular musiic, it was definitely an influence.

1001 albums to hear before you clash 118# I guess it didnt stroke me much but its cool.

I liked this more than I thought I would, made me hate bands I’ve heard that are clearly copying their sound though

Interesting debut

Doesn’t have as much bite as their earlier stuff, but still very enjoyable and satisfying.

it's like parent approved punk

Album 43/1001. Listened 6/25/26. It's definitely a classic, but it's not really my jam. I doubt I'll listen again, but I respect these guys.

I like the album cover looks freaking punk. It's black and white, and I think the one on the left is the lead. I've only prominently listened to London Calling, so I know it's going to lean heavily on electric guitars and amped up vocals. From everything I can tell so far, I'll give the album a 6/10. Will change after listening to the album. AFTER LISTENING I only like "Police & Thieves"; the other songs were average.

I've not listened to this in a while. I kind of expected more from the sugar coated version in my mind. A decent debut, a huge influence on the music of my youth, as an album is alright.

No skips but it all kinda sounds the same. Good though, all songs I could easily work out to.

Not a big fan of The Clash

Defo not for me

Gött punk-garage-rockigt. Najs hört mer än London Calling

also listened to this album lollllz🫶🏽‼️

Pretty decent. A bit older for my GenZ taste.

Fav song: White Riot

Primera: 6/10 Segunda: 8/10 Tercera: 6/10 Cuarta: 7/10 Quinta: 5/10 Sexta: 6/10 Septima: 8/10 Octava: 6/10 Novena: 7/10 Decima: 6/10 Onceava: 6/10 Doceava: 8/10 Trece: 8/10 Catorce: 8/10

Clash is great, but this album is just ok.

Not bad

Good album important in the shape of modern music.

While there are growing pains evident here, the animating punk energy is clear and up front. England in the middle of depression, young people fighting the only positive energy (heroin not a good out)--this music the soundtrack.

I didn’t find it enjoyable enough to listen to twice. It’s a good album that deserves to exist, but it’s not for me

very british

In elk geval. FAVO: Londons burning, Police and Thieves

I’m familiar with a number of tracks from this record because I had their singles compilation on CD, along with London Calling, when I was in high school. I like that album better, and this is a little repetitive, but still a solid listen.

Definitely not the 70s hair rock that I was expecting. really enjoyed 'I'm so bored of america.'

Amazing that they came out with London calling like 2 years later

Muy punk

I am also tired of the USA
