Christine and the Queens
2/5
Why would someone recreate soulless 80s synth-pop in 2018? And why is this on a list of must-hear albums?
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
Supposedly you have to listen to this 7 times before you "get it". I'm retired and have all the time in the world, but there's no way in hell I'm listening to this again.

The Zombies
3/5
I've heard the hits but never listened to the whole album before today. Classic late 60s sound, still holds up pretty well 55 years later.
OutKast
2/5
Did nothing for me. Last song was ok.
Michael Jackson
4/5
Wow! Never been a huge fan, but really liked this.
Arcade Fire
2/5
Didn't suck, but was immediately forgettable.
Harry Nilsson
3/5
Only knew the hits, but this was worth the listen.
Muddy Waters
3/5
Classic blues, very good
The War On Drugs
2/5
God, what a snoozer!
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
I could easily name 1001 other albums I'd rather listen to. Musically some of the beats were kinda cool.
The Dictators
3/5
Simple, catchy, and stupid in a fun way. Favorite songs: cover of California Sun, Cars and Girls.
David Bowie
4/5
Strong from start to finish. Been a Bowie fan for 40 years, but spent most of my time on Ziggy and the Berlin albums. I think this was the first time I listened to this one in full.
Favorite: Station to Station
Yes
5/5
Love this.
Favorite: Starship Trooper.
New Order
3/5
Such a unique sound, there's no mistaking who this is.
Favorite: Love Vigilantes
Charles Mingus
3/5
Not a jazz fan, but some parts of this album were pretty cool. Favorite: last 1-2 minutes of track 1.
Steely Dan
3/5
4 really great songs, the rest was mediocre. Favorite: Dirty Work
KISS
2/5
2 killer songs but the rest was forgettable.
TLC
3/5
Didn't expect much, but not bad.
The Streets
1/5
What the fuck is this?
Paul McCartney and Wings
5/5
Love this. Brings back some great memories.
Favorite: Let Me Roll It.
Aerosmith
3/5
Haven't heard this since before high school. When Aerosmith didn't suck.
Favorites: Toys, Uncle Salty, Sweet Emotion.
Janet Jackson
4/5
Didn't expect to like this one, but damn!
The Velvet Underground
3/5
Good, not great
The Smiths
3/5
Pretty strong album, holds up well. Not as good as The Queen is Dead, which I'm sure will show up on this list.
Favorite: Barbarism Begins at Home
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
One of the best albums ever made. Not a bad song on here.
Morrissey
2/5
Pre-listen note - just had Meat is Murder 2 days ago. Good, not great. Not sure I have the patience for more Morrissey unless it's The Queen is Dead.
Dude can sing, though. Track 1 sounds great.
Rest of the album, pretty boring
The Clash
4/5
I've heard the US version hundreds of times. Never heard Deny, Cheat, Protex Blue, or 48 Hours. This version doesn't have Clash City Rockers, Complete Control, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, I Fought the Law, or Jail Guitar Doors.
5 stars for the US version, 4 for this one.
Still my favorite Clash album though.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Really good. Favorites: title track, the boxer, cecilia.
N.E.R.D
2/5
Here's another one that makes me wonder how this list was put together. Didn't suck, but give me an hour and I could come up with 10,001 other albums that didn't suck.
Cream
2/5
A couple good songs, the rest is pretty boring
4/5
Didn't expect to like this. I always felt Oasis was being shoved down our throats in the 90s (kinda like Beyonce in the 00s). I will definitely listen to this one again.
Favorite: title track.
Mudhoney
2/5
Wasn't horrible, wasn't good.
808 State
3/5
First EDM album from this list, a genre I'm not at all familiar with. Not bad at all. I'll keep this in mind if I need background music without getting caught up in lyrics.
Van Halen
2/5
Never been a fan. This hasn't changed my mind.
Lightning Bolt
2/5
Almost stopped listening after the first song, which is truly just noise. Stuck it out, and the rest is actual music. Not my thing, though.
ZZ Top
3/5
Mixed feelings about this album. In 1983 it felt like they sold out. But it made them superstars. Well-deserved, just not representative of who they truly were.
Good, not great.
Led Zeppelin
2/5
Listened to a lot of Zeppelin growing up, mostly II and IV. Honestly find this one annoying as fuck.
Dolly Parton
3/5
Enjoyed this one. Favorite: title track
The Beach Boys
1/5
God, I hate the Beach Boys! I knew eventually Pet Sounds would come up, because "Brian Wilson is a genius".
Sorry, this is the Alvin and the Chipmunks. Adults shouldn't have to listen to this shit.
The Cure
2/5
Why this album? The Cure have much better albums than this. This one isn't bad, but it's not much more than background music.
Steely Dan
4/5
Tasty all the way through.
Beach House
4/5
Never heard of this band, but I'm enjoying the shit out of the first 2 songs. Reminiscent of Explosions in the Sky, minus the intensity. Gonna listen to more of these guys.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
I was excited to see this one pop up, as I'm a fan of his later gruffier albums. Haven't listened too much to his early stuff.
The songwriting/poetry is definitely there, but all in all this one comes off as pretentious and a little boring.
Cat Stevens
3/5
Still holds up after 50+ years.
David Crosby
2/5
Only one song that didn't bore me to death, otherwise I'd give it 1 star. Had to go to YouTube to hear the 2 songs with Neil Young, wasn't worth the extra effort.
Sigur Rós
4/5
I remember when this came out, it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before.
Favorite: Olsen Olsen
Orange Juice
3/5
Never heard of these guys before. Some of it sounds a little dated, but overall pretty good. Reminds me of Talking Heads a bit, but mostly the standard Britpop of the 80s.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
Smell the Horse! Everything about this works. 4 classics (the 3 obvious ones plus the title track). I love the sloppiness on those 4.
Round and Round would be the best track on 15 of the other NY+CH albums.
Absolutely a 5.
Blur
3/5
First 2 songs were good, maybe 1 or 2 more. Couldn't hold my attention.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
Why have I never listened to Amy Winehouse? Shame on me. I could listen to this all day.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Pretty melancholy, but great songwriting.
Rufus Wainwright
2/5
Not horrible, but not very interesting either.
Supergrass
3/5
Not bad, better than most of the britpop from the same time period.
The Cult
2/5
Not my thing at all. I try to reserve 1 star for stuff I truly hate. This one comes pretty close.
Talking Heads
5/5
Robert Wyatt
3/5
Started and restarted this 3 times this morning, fell asleep 3 times. After another listen, I kinda liked it. Not sure it belongs on this list, but I'll keep it in mind the next time I can't fall asleep.
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Enjoyed this one.
The Smashing Pumpkins
2/5
I always thought they were overrated in the 90s, and this certainly didn't change my mind.
The Offspring
2/5
Punk-influenced definitely, but way too over-produced for my taste.
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
I understand why this makes the list - they were on the leading edge of the San Francisco/psychedelic scene, and this album has most of their hits. Somebody to Love, White Rabbit, and Embryonic Journey are the highlights. The rest of it's a little repetitive.
Fela Kuti
3/5
Day 59. Everything til now has been American or English, save 2 Canadian and 1 Icelandic.
Finally an African album and ... it's OK. Very talented band playing for what sounds like less than 50 people. Not Fela's best, but worth the listen. The last track was recorded 8 years later.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
Fantastic
Malcolm McLaren
4/5
Didn't expect to like this, but goddamn I was wrong.
Happy Mondays
2/5
Just not a fan of this type of music.
Sufjan Stevens
2/5
I remember when this came out and every hipster was spewing in his/her/their pants.
This album marks the beginning of the pussification of the USA. Can't give it a 1, since there's some good orchestral moments.
Duran Duran
2/5
Just ok, wouldn't seek this out
Metallica
4/5
I was done with metal around 1982, so I never got into Metallica. Probably wouldn't have ever given them a listen if not for this site. Enjoyed this a lot.
Slayer
3/5
Yesterday was Master of Puppets, today is my first listen to Slayer. Not a metal head but have to say I enjoyed both.
Kanye West
4/5
I didn't want to like this, given that Kanye's an asshole, but goddam, I enjoyed this. Listened twice, will return.
Mj Cole
2/5
2 hours is a long time when you're not really into something.
Raekwon
2/5
I don't get it
Little Richard
4/5
I probably wouldn't have sought this out on my own, but it's obvious why he was a charter member of the R&R HOF in 1986 (back when it meant something). Enjoyed this.
Rush
5/5
Glad to see this made the list. I still listen to this a few times a year. I'll give 5 stars to anything between 2112 and Moving Pictures.
Goldie
1/5
Boring.
Pixies
3/5
Haven't listened to this in probably 25 years. Didn't like it as much as I did then.
The White Stripes
3/5
I like the rawness, and there are a handful of kick ass songs, but also a lot of filler
OutKast
3/5
Not a hip hop fan, but I liked this better than Stankonia. Bonus point for rhyming nasty hoes/pistachios.
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
3. Nothing more.
Sarah Vaughan
4/5
Incredible voice.
The Auteurs
2/5
I liked the first song, the rest was just ok.
Travis
2/5
There is just way too much mediocre 90s britpop on this list.
Otis Redding
5/5
Not a weak song on here. Even if there was, Otis's voice and the Memphis Horns would transform it into greatness.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
5/5
I only heard of this band because Karen O had a couple songs on the I'm Not There album.
I'm 80 albums in and this is my first 5 star to a band I'd never listened to before. This is why I signed up.
Radiohead
3/5
Never heard Radiohead before (except Creep). This sounds so much like Sigur Ros, only not as melodic. And I can understand the words.
Overall, a weak 3.
Everything But The Girl
2/5
Good voice, but all in all pretty lame.
Neil Young
4/5
Favorite: Out On The Weekend.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
1/5
Terrible.
D'Angelo
2/5
Kinda boring
The Dandy Warhols
2/5
Mediocre at best
Paul Simon
5/5
Ive probably listened to this at least once a month since 1986. In my opinion one of the greatest albums of all time.
If you like this, I'd recommend listening to the 25th anniversary edition. There's some alternate and instrumental versions, plus a really interesting description on how the song Graceland was put together.
The Beach Boys
1/5
I hate the Beach Boys.
Deep Purple
1/5
This just sounds cartoonish in 2023. Didn't expect to hate this.
Garbage
2/5
OK, but certainly nothing special.
Goldfrapp
2/5
I always get a little excited when I get an artist I'd never heard of. More often than not I'm disappointed and this album is no exception.
The Mars Volta
3/5
I remember hearing this on NPR when it came out. Downloaded it from one of those P2P sites as soon as I got home.
That sums it up for me - interesting enough to pirate, but I never bought the CD.
Even though it might be the coolest album cover ever!
Terence Trent D'Arby
2/5
Didn't hold my attention at all.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
3/5
Love Neil Young. CSN, not so much.
The Beta Band
2/5
Boring.
The Divine Comedy
4/5
Another artist I hadn't heard of. Saw "1996" and assumed it had to be another lame-ass britpop album like so many others on this list.
On the contrary, this is pretty entertaining. Vibes of '60s movie soundtracks, maybe a little '70s Bowie or Queen? Very theatrical (at times too much so), but a pleasant surprise.
Various Artists
5/5
This album on Christmas Day? How could I not give it a 5?
Sonic Youth
3/5
Expected pretentious arty noise. I wasn't completely wrong, but I liked it better than I thought I would. Side 1 is much better.
Soundgarden
3/5
Didn't age well in my opinion.
Jane Weaver
3/5
Another artist I hadn't heard of before and another pleasant surprise.
GZA
2/5
Really not into this
Pixies
2/5
Sounds like a band who hit their peak and thought it would always be that easy. They were wrong.
The Only Ones
3/5
Good, not great
Linkin Park
1/5
Jesus Christ, shut the fuck up.
Queen
5/5
Haven't listened to this whole album in decades. Absolutely fantastic, even the campy ones (Seaside Rendezvous, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon). Favorites (other than Bohemian Rhapsody): Death on Two Legs, 39.
Metallica
2/5
Interesting idea, but I didn't like this.
Black Sabbath
3/5
In my opinion, only the first 3 Sabbath albums belong on this list. This one was OK, but nothing special.
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
Damn, so many hits one one album.
Morrissey
2/5
Some decent moments (songs 1,4) but overall nothing stands out.
Genesis
2/5
Didn't care for this, not a fan of early or late Genesis.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
Sound exactly like you'd think an album named 'Songs For Swingin' Lovers' would sound.
Gotan Project
4/5
Great background music, had it on a loop for half the day. Will definitely listen to this again.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
Interesting.
Big Star
2/5
I much prefer the power pop of their first 2 albums.
Judas Priest
2/5
Living After Midnight rocks, the rest was just OK.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
Great, great album.
Madonna
2/5
Couple good songs (leadoff and title tracks), or at least parts of the songs were kinda cool. The rest is too over-produced for my taste.
David Bowie
2/5
I know this was his last album, but there's no way it belongs on this list.
The Modern Lovers
2/5
Roadrunner's great, and I actually like Jonathan Richman in small doses. This was a tough listen.
Minor Threat
3/5
Not a huge fan of hard-core punk, but this was more accessible than most.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
Really enjoyed this, will definitely play again and again.
Janis Joplin
4/5
Just a great voice. Some nice surprises, as I'd never listened to the whole album before.
Coldplay
2/5
Nothing even remotely special about this one.
Megadeth
2/5
I was a fan of metal in the 70s then got more interested in other things. Hadn't listened to any metal that came out post-1980, until this site. Had Metallica and Slayer earlier, so I was glad to see this come up. Disappointed. Vocals sounded like a million shitty 70s bands.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Not my favorite Creedence album, a bit too much white-boy blues for my liking (except Proud Mary). Their next 3 albums are 5-star and I expect to see them all on this list.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Better than I remember
New Order
3/5
Kinda surprised to see this one show up. 3 good songs (tracks 2-4). Nothing special.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
Yes, it's been overplayed for the last 20 years but it's definitely a 5.
The Flaming Lips
4/5
Really liked this, gonna check out more
The Icarus Line
1/5
Hipster bullshit. Emperor's new clothes. Fuck these guys.
Liz Phair
3/5
Just ok.
R.E.M.
5/5
Love this
R.E.M.
2/5
REM was so much better when you couldn't understand the words.
Nick Drake
2/5
Immediately forgettable.
Doves
3/5
Hadn't heard of them, pleasant surprise.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Classic.
Björk
3/5
Interesting album. Some of it works, some doesn't.
3/5
This was the last U2 album I ever bought. If I recall, it never got much play.
King Crimson
4/5
I've liked this album for a long time. Also liked the bonus tracks on Spotify.
Reading the Wikipedia article, I'd love to hear the country version of the title track.
Haircut 100
2/5
So I must hear Haircut 100 before I die? Fuck off.
Sleater-Kinney
4/5
I'd heard of them, but never heard them. Enjoyed this.
Jane's Addiction
3/5
Bought this when it came out, based on Jane Says. Was disappointed with the rest of the album. Actually enjoyed it more this time.
R.E.M.
4/5
Was a huge R.E.M. fan back in the day. Loved this and still love it.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
I kind of understand why this album is on the list, since they helped define much of the 80s post-punk sound. But it's not that special.
Roni Size
2/5
Another one that makes me wish this site wasn't created by a Brit who came of age in the 90s.
Funkadelic
2/5
Didn't care for it.
Supergrass
3/5
Enjoyed this
Common
1/5
Horrible
Kate Bush
3/5
Had a roommate who used to play the shit out of this to the point I was sick of it. But, good memories.
Derek & The Dominos
5/5
Great musicians, great album. Favorites: Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, title track. To me, Bobby Whitlock's background vocals are a highlight.
Scott Walker
2/5
What a load of pretentious bullshit.
Duchess was OK, otherwise this would be a 1.
Röyksopp
3/5
Nice surprise. Very, very chill.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
2/5
Didn't care for it.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Title track and NIB are highlights. Not as strong as Paranoid, but damn good.
Marvin Gaye
2/5
Nothing about this album stands out.
De La Soul
2/5
Eye Know was good, the rest is just not my thing.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
Piece of My Heart is an all time great.
The Kinks
2/5
Recognize David Watts from The Jam, didn't know it was a Kinks song. Otherwise, this didn't interest me much
Robbie Williams
2/5
I don't understand how this made the list. Less than mediocre.
Sam Cooke
4/5
God, I would love to hear this on vinyl with a good set of headphones!
David Ackles
2/5
Seriously pretentious horseshit.
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
Love it.
Arrested Development
3/5
Musically pretty good
Jeff Buckley
3/5
Title song is damn good. The rest seems more than a little self-indulgent.
Scissor Sisters
3/5
Doesnt sound gay to me.
Sister Sledge
2/5
Not my favorite genre, but I realize there had to be some disco on this list. First song was good.
Duke Ellington
3/5
Enjoyable once I started skipping thru the intros.
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
OK, nothing special.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Second Divine Comedy album from this site. Liked the first one better.
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Double album, no weak songs.
David Bowie
4/5
Not my favorite Bowie album, but very good.
Van Morrison
5/5
One of the greatest of all time. I'll never get tired of hearing this.
David Holmes
2/5
Don't Die Just Yet was OK, the rest seems ... unfinished?
The Doors
4/5
Björk
1/5
Jesus, what a tough listen.
Bad Brains
3/5
Not a hard-core fan, but better than I expected.
The Pogues
4/5
Favorites: Side 1.
The Who
3/5
OK, but not the masterpiece it's made out to be.
Soft Machine
2/5
A handful of decent moments, but nothing I'd listen to again.
The Hives
2/5
Heard *of* them but never *heard* them. Strong Stooges vibes at times, but overall this sounds like a dime-a-dozen post-punk band.
Willie Nelson
4/5
Damn, Willie can really sing!
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
A couple weeks ago I had the Scissor Sisters, which is supposed to be the top gay album of all time.
This was 100 times gayer.
Randy Newman
3/5
Great songwriting
Todd Rundgren
3/5
Haven't heard this in decades. I remember having this album and only listening to sides 1 and 4.
Billy Joel
5/5
Billy Joel is one of those artists I appreciate more as I get older. And this is clearly his best. Nothing groundbreaking or even influential, just 9 very good songs on a single album.
The Black Keys
2/5
Poor man's White Stripes. Didn't hold my interest at all.
Donovan
2/5
The 2 songs I'd heard before are good. No eye-openers otherwise. Not a fan of the minstrel songs. Very dated.
U2
3/5
Like most people I got sick of U2 over the years, but this was a nice reminder of how good they were at one time.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Musically very cool, but I'm really not a fan of her singing style.
The Smiths
5/5
Always loved this album. This was before Morrissey became insufferable. Really strong guitar and bass throughout. Lyrically every song has at least one brilliant zinger.
Meat Puppets
3/5
Cowpunk. I dig it.
The Notorious B.I.G.
2/5
I'm too old for this shit.
Kings of Leon
3/5
OK, nothing groundbreaking.
Beatles
5/5
Finally a Beatles album on Day 195.
Black Sabbath
5/5
No metal band, including Dabbath themselves, has ever made a better album.
Carpenters
2/5
2 stars only because I remember a couple songs from when I was a kid. Would be 1 star if I had to listen again.
Underworld
2/5
Forgettable
Eurythmics
2/5
Wasn't a fan. Still not.
Marty Robbins
4/5
An album full of story-songs? Fuck yeah!
A couple of all-time classics (El Paso, Big Iron). More than a few hokey songs, but it's from 1959.
Overall, liked this a lot.
The Young Gods
2/5
Their mothers probably fraternities with the nazis.
Calexico
3/5
Thrilled to see something that isn't britpop i
Bob Dylan
5/5
Starts with the greatest song ever written. Ends with Desolation Row. Only one song I would consider a deep track.
Christine and the Queens
2/5
Why would someone recreate soulless 80s synth-pop in 2018? And why is this on a list of must-hear albums?
The Who
2/5
One great song (I Can See For Miles). Otherwise, I don't get why this is considered so highly regarded.
Van Halen
3/5
Not a Van Halen fan, but this was ok.
Prince
4/5
I wasn't really into this when it came out, but I definitely appreciate it more now.
Gorillaz
2/5
No thanks
Pulp
2/5
Better than most of the britpop on this list
Peter Gabriel
2/5
Expected to like this more than I did.
Joni Mitchell
2/5
Musically pretty good, liked everything except her voice.
Dire Straits
4/5
Great debut. Only a couple of so-so tunes. Sultans of Swing is an all-time classic.
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
Some real tasty funk, but a lot of filler too.
Arctic Monkeys
3/5
OK, but probably won't revisit
Bobby Womack
4/5
Love this
Big Black
3/5
More than a bit rough, but some good moments
Nirvana
3/5
Hadn't heard this full album before. Last song was a great version, the rest was enjoyable
The Jam
3/5
In my opinion not their best, but still solid
Animal Collective
2/5
Boring, boring, boring
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
Liked this one better than the last Sly album.
Deep Purple
4/5
Smoke on the Water is an all-time classic. Highway Star and Space Truckin are bangers. The rest is typical early 70s hard Rock, which isn't a bad thing at all.
Hole
3/5
Never gave much thought to HOLE, but this is actually pretty good
Lorde
3/5
Not bad, might listen to more.
Miles Davis
5/5
Just fantastic
M.I.A.
3/5
Didn't expect to like this.
Fever Ray
3/5
Never heard of Fever Ray. Nice surprise, very chill.
Scott Walker
2/5
Guy's got a good voice, sounds a lot like Neil Diamond. But my God, the material is horrible. Campy and over-dramatic.
Elton John
5/5
Elton John was great in the first half of the 70s, and this was far and away his best.
fIREHOSE
3/5
Love the bass
John Cale
4/5
Really enjoyed this.
Nas
2/5
Didn't hate it, just not into rap.
Super Furry Animals
2/5
Listened this morning, forgot all about it already.
Deerhunter
3/5
Enjoyed most of this
Tom Tom Club
3/5
Much prefer Talking Heads. Not bad, just a little dated.
Björk
3/5
This is better than the other 2 Bjork albums this site has given me. Being her debut, a lot of it sounds like the Sugarcubes, who I liked a lot.
I gave Medulla 3 stars, but I can't go to 4 with this one.
Motörhead
3/5
4 or 5 killers, the rest is a little bit much.
The Byrds
4/5
Not my favorite Byrds album, but very good.
Portishead
3/5
Pretty chill. Enjoyed it.
The Damned
3/5
Liked this
Wu-Tang Clan
2/5
Not for me
James Taylor
3/5
Title track and Fire and Rain are great. The attempts at the blues are embarrassing. The rest is bland easy listening.
3 stars for the 2 good songs alone.
Keith Jarrett
3/5
Interesting story, so-so album.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
Only knew them from a couple songs. This was better than I expected.
The Soft Boys
4/5
Very nice surprise. I knew I Wanna Destroy You from Uncle Tupelo. I liked a little bit of Robyn Hitchcock in the 80s, and I loved Katrina and the Waves first album. Never listened to a Soft Boys album until now.
Rage Against The Machine
3/5
A little heavy
Joni Mitchell
2/5
I realize she's very influential and highly respected, I just don't like this.
Tim Buckley
3/5
Side 1 was pretty good, might re-listen
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
I've lived this album for a long time. Stop That Train may be my favorite Wailers song ever.
Eagles
3/5
None of the deep cuts did much for me, but the 3 hits are pretty good
2 great songs, nothing special about the rest
Elastica
3/5
Not bad. Typical of the 90s.
Violent Femmes
5/5
Love this. Hadn't listened to the full album in a long time, so I'm glad this came up.
Barry Adamson
3/5
Background music, but that's not such a bad thing. Some of it I didn't like, but I think I might give this a re-listen.
Elliott Smith
2/5
Not a fan of anyone who offs themself, especially in such a brutal manner as this guy. Forced myself to listen to the whole album.
50 Cent
2/5
Not for me
Bob Dylan
5/5
Amazing that this is his 15th studio album and he was still cranking out great songs. Solid 5 out of 5.
Beastie Boys
2/5
I may have liked this if it came out when I was 10.
The Triffids
1/5
No fucking way does this belong here
Iggy Pop
4/5
Only heard the title track and The Passenger previously. The whole album is good, will definitely revisit.
Mudhoney
2/5
Nothing about this interested me in the least
Richard Thompson
5/5
50 years old, and most of it sounds like it could have been written yesterday. The way their voices work together reminds me of Exene and John Doe from X 10 years later.
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
2/5
Not a fan
The Go-Go's
3/5
There's the hits, and not much else
The Sugarcubes
4/5
When this came out it was unlike anything I'd heard before. I was lucky enough to see them live in 1989 and they didn't disappoint. I like this much better than Bjork's solo stuff.
Rush
5/5
Rush's last great album. Easy 5 stars.
Sade
2/5
Nothing wrong with this. Nothing great either.
Bon Jovi
2/5
I realize with this project I'm gonna have to listen to a lot of albums and artists I'm not remotely interested in. This is one of them.
Drive Like Jehu
3/5
Ok
Adam & The Ants
2/5
Wouldn't have sought this out. Won't listen again.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Hadn't listened to this in a long time. Shame on me.
Radiohead
2/5
Mostly pretentious bullshit, although there were a handful of decent moments.
Jamiroquai
3/5
Obvious Stevie Wonder influence, but good.
AC/DC
4/5
Cerebral? No. Fun? Fuck yes!
The Mothers Of Invention
2/5
This is mostly shit, although part of me is impressed that they were able to make this album in 1966.
Orbital
3/5
Didn't like all of it, but it was pretty good when they just stuck to the beats.
Nirvana
3/5
Favorite was Milk It.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Just as good as, if not better than their debut.
Girls Against Boys
2/5
No idea why this would be on this list.
Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
Pretty chill
Joni Mitchell
2/5
I know this is widely considered one of the greatest ever, I just can't stand her delivery. Not a fan at all.
Fela Kuti
3/5
Title track is great.
Tom Waits
5/5
The junkyard instruments work perfectly with the junkyard voice. The ballads (Who Are You, A Little Rain, Whistle Down the Wind) are heart-wrenching because of that voice.
Santana
4/5
Haven't really listened to Santana since probably the early 80s. Gonna have to add a few of these to my rotation. Still holds up very well.
The White Stripes
3/5
Might listen again
Air
4/5
Never heard of Air. Nothing earth-shattering, quite the opposite. But very chill. I'll be listening to this more.
Living Colour
3/5
Liked: Cult of Personality, Glamour Boys, Which Way to America.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Why doesn't anyone make music like this anymore?
Tim Buckley
2/5
Maybe there's a reason nobody bought his albums
Jeff Beck
2/5
Might have been groundbreaking in 1968, but I could walk into any bar in any town and hear a band that sounds exactly like this.
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
Pretty chill, I'll listen again.
Van Morrison
3/5
I've heard this before and was excited to see it come up. This time around I was a little disappointed, not sure why. Highlight: St Dominic's Preview.
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
Had never heard the whole album before. Enjoyed this.
Madonna
2/5
There was one song that didn't make me want to rip my headphones off.
Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
Title track is a classic. Not sure if I'd necessarily seek the rest out, but overall enjoyed this.
Billy Bragg
5/5
I forgot how good this was. I hadn't heard the extended version before, and the extra side doesn't add a whole lot. But damn, side 1 is fantastic. Listened 3 times.
Orbital
2/5
Ok, nothing special
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
Ok, didn't enjoy it as much as Fever To Tell.
Miles Davis
3/5
Nice. Preferred side 1.
2/5
Yes, this was hugely influential. No, I didn't like it.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Dylan's comeback after 2 decades of less than stellar albums. I remember hearing this for the first time and being blown away. Trying to Get to Heaven and Not Dark Yet are the standouts.
The Cars
5/5
Just jam-packed with tunes that have stood the test of time.
Koffi Olomide
3/5
Liked the past song.
Tito Puente
4/5
Very tasty!
Tom Waits
3/5
Tom Waits is in my top 10, but this is my least favorite album of his. No noteworthy songs. But listening to it in it's entirety, I did enjoy it.
Jack White
4/5
This is one talented motherfucker.
Nanci Griffith
4/5
Really like this
Bonnie Raitt
2/5
Just boring
Talking Heads
4/5
Such a unique band. This is solid, but they became great with their next album.
Frank Black
3/5
Nice surprise. I was kind of a Pixies fan when they were originally together, but never paid any attention to Frank Black's solo career.
Favorites: Headache, Speedy Marie
The Cure
3/5
Second Cure album on this list so far (seventeen seconds was the first). I don't think either one was special in the least.
Ash
2/5
Nothing interesting here.
Pixies
4/5
My favorite Pixies album.
Joe Ely
4/5
Pleasantly surprised to see Joe Ely made the list. Hope there's more like this.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
In the US they were a one-hit wonder but damn, that one hit sure is catchy. Also creepy now that I can see the lyrics.
The Temptations
3/5
Solid Motown album.
Destiny's Child
2/5
Wasn't horrible, just didn't enjoy this.
Blood, Sweat & Tears
2/5
This album has a little bit of everything that was hokey about the late 60s.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Liked: Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Some monster songs on this album, it's been far too long since I've listened to the whole thing. The best concept album ever.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Lyrics are top-notch, he was a poet first and foremost. Musically not very interesting.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
His best days were well behind him by the time this album came out.
The Band
4/5
Still holds up well today
Radiohead
2/5
Maybe I'm just too old, but I've never understood why these guys are so revered.
Alanis Morissette
2/5
Joni Mitchell wannabe. And I fucking hate Joni Mitchell.
Moby
2/5
Another album that shouldn't be on the "must listen" list.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Good Playlist for a prison.
Big Star
4/5
Never heard of this band until the Replacements and REM cited them as influences back in the 80s. Shame on all '70s radio stations for ignoring them.
Missy Elliott
2/5
Just not my thing.
R.E.M.
5/5
I remember hearing this in Streetside Records, unaware that they had a new album out. I was a huge REM fan but hadn't liked their last 2 albums at all (didn't even buy Out of Time). What a comeback!
Not quite as good as Murmur or Reckoning, but still damn good. Their last great album.
Venom
3/5
Not really into this type of music at all, and I'd never heard of Venom. But I actually enjoyed it. And I can see how it influenced other bands.
Prefab Sprout
3/5
My roommate used to play side 1 a lot. Now I understand why she never played side 2. Nice memories.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
1/5
So I have to listen to a novelty album before I die? If so, I'd have preferred Weird Al.
The White Stripes
3/5
Seven Nation Army has one of the best riffs ever. The rest of this album is forgettable.
Soul II Soul
2/5
Maybe the most boring album I've ever listened to.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Excellent, but the 3 duets would be better if Johnny handled them alone.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Haven't listened to this in probably 40+ years. Still knew every note.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
3/5
I hope there's more Tom Petty on this list besides this one.
Astor Piazzolla
2/5
Excited to see an artist I'd never heard of. Disappointed after listening. Not something I'll be returning to.
The Fall
2/5
Music is ok, vocals almost unbearable
Iron Maiden
1/5
I was 18, and really into metal, when this came out. Even then I knew this was shit.
Simply Red
2/5
Seriously?
Slint
2/5
5 pieces of shit in a row. Please give me something at least halfway decent.
Guns N' Roses
4/5
I was never a fan, but there's no denying this was a huge album.
Antony and the Johnsons
2/5
Not into the marbling voice
The Police
4/5
Wow, I haven't even thought about this album in almost 40 years. Just loaded with hits.
Solomon Burke
4/5
Very tasty soul
Crosby, Stills & Nash
4/5
Couldn't figure out why Spotify didn't have this, then I realized I hid this album years ago because I was tired of it being constantly recommended.
Once I figured that out and listened, it's actually a pretty damn good album.
The Prodigy
4/5
Wouldn't call myself a fan of the genre, but this one rocks.
The Byrds
4/5
Several different styles, very good
Steely Dan
5/5
One of the most iconic records of the 70s, for good reason. Every track here is superb.
G. Love & Special Sauce
2/5
Another one that shouldn't be on this list.
Miles Davis
3/5
Much more accessible than I anticipated
Method Man
2/5
Not the worst rap album I've heard (this list has more than enough).
Led Zeppelin
4/5
First time hearing this entire album.
The Mamas & The Papas
2/5
Thankfully short. Hard to believe this was considered hip at the time.
The Cardigans
2/5
A little too cutesy, but not bad.
Norah Jones
4/5
Great voice, great phrasing
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
5/5
God, what a great album!
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Much better than Murder Ballads
Kid Rock
1/5
Complete piece of shit.
The Clash
4/5
Definitely very good, a bit overrated in my opinion.
Syd Barrett
2/5
I actually bought this in 1982 out of curiosity. What a pile of crap! Definitely not a must-hear-before-you-die album.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Any Stevie Wonder album from the 70s is worth a listen. Favorite: You Haven't Done Nothin.
Elton John
3/5
The 3 hits are top-notch. No surprises otherwise.
Brian Eno
4/5
Wow, I really enjoyed this. The non-ambient stuff reminds me a lot of Talking Heads.
Prince
3/5
A couple great songs.
Little Simz
2/5
Not a genre I'm interested in, but I've heard worse.
The Doors
3/5
The 3 hits are very good. The rest isn't worth listening to.

4/5
The first 6 tracks are so good.
Roxy Music
2/5

One of the best ever.
CHVRCHES
2/5
Not my thing at all.
Can
3/5
Not bad, thought I'd like this better than I did.
Aimee Mann
2/5
Nothing wrong with this, but there were probably 1001 better albums just in 1993.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Bookended by 2 of the greatest Stones songs ever.
Pulp
2/5
Kind of the definition of mediocre
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
3/5
Very dated, but I enjoyed this way more than the other rap/hip-hop on this list.
Johnny Cash
4/5
This one was more fun than the last prison album.
Iron Butterfly
2/5
Heard the title track dozens of times but I don't recall ever hearing another song by these guys. After listening, it's obvious why that is.
First cut sounds a lot like the Doors.
T. Rex
3/5
Holds up very well
UB40
4/5
Labour of Love was one of my favorite albums in the 80s. I'd forgot about UB40 by the time Spotify came around. I had no idea they originated as a dub band. Very pleasant surprise.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
Not really a fan of this genre, but I did enjoy this. Absolutely belongs on this list.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Blowin in the Wind, Hard Rain, Don't Think Twice more than make up for the handful of weaker songs.
Queens of the Stone Age
2/5
Didn't hate it, didn't especially like it.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Not a bad song here
Megadeth
3/5
Better than the last Megadeth album on this list.

2/5
Forgettable

3/5
All over the place style-wise, but some good stuff.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Not bad, might listen again
Tangerine Dream
3/5
Very chill. Good bedtime music.
Bob Dylan
5/5
I'm a huge Dylan fan, and this is one of his best.
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
I'm not a fan of rap at all, but I understand why this makes the list. But it's kinda laughable today.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Great story behind this album
Michael Jackson
5/5
This is as close as you can get to the perfect album (other than the last 45 seconds of the McCartney duet).
Deservedly the best-selling album of all time. Sometimes the general public isn't as dumb as we've been led to believe.
Metallica
4/5
Lyrics are kinda laughable but damn, the music is pretty heavy.
The Blue Nile
2/5
Stay is the only song that stood out.
Shack
3/5
Hadn't heard of Shack before today. Not bad, but hardly essential.
Eminem
4/5
Not a rap fan, but this was fun.
Wire
2/5
Influenced a bunch of other bands I don't like.
Steve Winwood
3/5
I'm kind of impressed that he did all the instruments and vocals himself. But this isn't something I'd return to.
The Isley Brothers
3/5
Leadoff track is amazing.
Maxwell
2/5
There's a million albums out there that sound exactly like this one. Hardly a must-hear.
Pretenders
4/5
Wow, haven't listened to this since the mid-80s. Shame on me.
Donald Fagen
4/5
Really liked this. Yes, it sounds exactly like Steely Dan. That's not a bad thing. There's a reason they show up on so many "best of" lists.
Iggy Pop
2/5
Nothing really stands out about this one.
Songhoy Blues
3/5
Nice surprise
Emmylou Harris
4/5
Great voice and delivery. Decent material.
The 13th Floor Elevators
3/5
Very good, especially for 1966
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
Not sure this is "must-hear", but I enjoyed it.
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Springsteen felt compelled to record The Rising when, in the aftermath of the attacks on September 11, 2001, a stranger in an adjacent vehicle rolled down his window and said: "We need you now".
I miss the days when we were still idealistic enough to believe that musicians could make a difference. Had the same feeling a couple weeks ago after listening to Tracy Chapman's debut album.
As for this album, it's 15 years past Bruce being relevant and has no place here on this list.
Sepultura
2/5
This is album #412 and I'm still forcing myself to listen to the whole thing.
A couple, maybe 3 songs were ok.
Cowboy Junkies
4/5
The definition of chill.
Stephen Stills
2/5
First song was good, rest was just so-so.

Interest level: 0
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Hard to believe this flopped when originally released.
The Replacements
5/5
This will always be one of my favorites
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
3/5
Understandably this was hugely influential in 1966. Most people probably had never heard blues before this. Today, not such a big deal.
Neil Young
3/5
Not my favorite Neil Young album.
Talvin Singh
3/5
Might listen again
The Crusaders
2/5
Very sugary.
Sinead O'Connor
3/5
2 great songs (Emperors New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds). The rest was pretty good too.
Rocket From The Crypt
2/5
Not a single song got my attention.
k.d. lang
2/5
Great voice, boring material.
Dennis Wilson
2/5
Why?
The Birthday Party
1/5
Absolute dogshit. Worse than Murder Ballads.
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Great voice of course, it just doesn't work with this material.
Baaba Maal
2/5
I'm all in for global representation on this list. Orchestra Baobab or Youssou N'Dour would be a much better choice for Senegalese.
Joan Armatrading
2/5
Liked the first song, that's about it.
Badly Drawn Boy
2/5
Very unimpressed.
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Not as good as Rumours but still damn good.
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
Just lame.
Beth Orton
2/5
Started off pretty good, then quickly became forgettable
Guided By Voices
2/5
Seems like a bunch of unfinished demos.

4/5
Very underrated album.

Instantly forgettable
Marianne Faithfull
2/5
No idea why this is on the list
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
Like most post-punk records, this pretty much sucked.
Peter Tosh
3/5
Solid album.

3/5
Fairly accessible to a non-jazz-lover
Manic Street Preachers
2/5
More shitty britpop
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
3/5
Not too bad.
PJ Harvey
2/5
This one's been hyped as an all-time great since it came out, but I've never listened until now.
Way overrated in my opinion.
Paul Weller
3/5
Very different from the Jam, kind of a 70s Traffic vibe.
Lenny Kravitz
2/5
Impressive that he played most of the instruments, but all in all a pretty boring album.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
Couple classics.
Justice
2/5
Merde. That means shit in French.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Still sounds ahead of its time.
Tricky
2/5
Didn't like, didn't hate.

3/5

No question, 5 stars.
Nico
3/5

2/5
Nope.

To me this is far and away the best Cure album. Can't quite go 5 stars though.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
No question this is 5 stars. Light years better than their first album.
Morrissey
1/5
Google the word "pussy" and it will auto-play this album.
Sonic Youth
2/5
3rd Sonic Youth album on this list, and my least favorite.
Culture Club
2/5
Worst Christmas present ever.
If Boy George looked like a regular dude, or if MTV hadn't been invented yet, most of us would never have heard of Culture Club.
Dinosaur Jr.
3/5
Pre-grunge grunge.
Wilco
3/5
It's fine, but nothing Wilco or Son Volt has ever done has been as good as Uncle Tupelo.
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
Very smooth, but nothing outstanding.
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Expected to enjoy this a lot more than I actually did.
Joan Baez
3/5
I've always found her voice a little hard to take.
Finley Quaye
2/5
I love reggae. But not this.
Flamin' Groovies
3/5
I'd only heard Shake Some Action before today. It really does sound like the Stones, with a little bit of Stooges thrown in.
Aphex Twin
3/5
Fine but forgettable
David Bowie
5/5
Love it
Thin Lizzy
3/5
It was OK, not sure it belongs here.
Deep Purple
3/5
I've got no objections to live albums being on this list, but this is the 2nd one in a row, and there's nothing special about it unless you're a huge Deep Purple fan. Which I'm not.
Joy Division
2/5
Sorry, I much prefer New Order.
Radiohead
2/5
I'll never understand why these guys are so highly regarded.
Bert Jansch
2/5
I get that this was influential, it's just not for me.
Gary Numan
3/5
Liked this way better than I thought I would.
Steely Dan

Not their best, but has a couple favorites.
John Prine
5/5
John Prine is on the Mount Rushmore of songwriters.
Happy Mondays
2/5
About what I expected
The Monkees
2/5
A made-for-TV band is something I have to hear before I die? I'd have preferred Josie and the Pussycats or the Banana Splits.
Coldplay
2/5
Sounds just like every other Brit album from this era. Not bad enough to hate, I just don't get the hype.
Funkadelic
3/5
Tasty
Grateful Dead
1/5
I like a lot of what the Dead did post-1969. This, however, is complete dogshit.
Serge Gainsbourg
3/5
I don't understand French, but I like the sound of this. Read the back story after listening. More than a little creepy.
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Better than most electronica on this list.
Goldfrapp
4/5
To me this was much much better than the previous Goldfrapp album. Very relaxing.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
Better than I thought it would be.

Great voice
The Roots
2/5

Bill Callahan
2/5
Not a fan at all of his talk-singing style, but Too Many Birds was ok.
The Lemonheads
3/5
Good stuff
The Pretty Things
2/5
First rock opera vs first concept album? Who gives a fuck?
Buffalo Springfield
3/5
The 3 Neil Young cuts are by far the best here.
X-Ray Spex
4/5
I'd only heard Oh Bondage before this. My loss, this whole album kicks ass.
Buzzcocks
4/5
Nothing earth-shattering, just fun melodic 70s punk.
Baaba Maal
3/5
Enjoyed the variety.
Elliott Smith
2/5
Really didn't enjoy this at all.
Sheryl Crow
3/5
Liked Leaving Las Vegas and Strong Enough.

2/5
Sounds like a mashup of a bunch of bands I don't like.
ABBA
4/5
Hadn't heard any of these songs before. Very pleasantly surprised.
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
Didn't really hold my interest, but I didn't hate it.
The Police
3/5
Some great songs, but a lot of fillers too.
Gil Scott-Heron
3/5
Not available on Spotify but I've heard this before.
John Lennon
3/5
Liked: Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth
David Bowie
3/5
Plenty good, not earth-shattering. Fifth Bowie album so far.
Dirty Projectors
2/5
Oh goody, more pretentious hipster bullshit.
Muddy Waters
3/5
Live blues is always better than studio.
The Who
4/5
Definitely the Who's best.
Lupe Fiasco
2/5
Not for me
Q-Tip
2/5
Probably better than most rap/hip hop, but I still didn't enjoy it.
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Very accessible for a jazz album.
Napalm Death
2/5
Not sure this really deserves to have the 4th lowest overall rating.
Hole
3/5
The Rolling Stones
3/5
It's OK, well played and all. But if this were the Stones only album, most of us would never had heard of them.
The B-52's
2/5
Even though I've never heard a full B52s album, I thought I'd enjoy this. More annoying than enjoyable.
Foo Fighters
3/5
All in all not bad, but not great either. Impressive that he did this by himself though.
Miriam Makeba
3/5
Enjoyed this mostly.
Saint Etienne
3/5
Not really a fan of dance/electronically but this one was ok. Best was the NY cover.
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
Not a fan.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Timeless
Frank Zappa
3/5
Never really got into Zappa. Liked the first 4 songs.
Amy Winehouse
5/5
Great voice, great band, great material.
Beatles
5/5
Just listened to this last week, but I'll gladly listen again.
Only 3 throwaway tracks here (obviously Revolution 9, plus Obla Di and Piggies).
Any Beatles album other than Yellow Submarine gets 5 stars from me.
Youssou N'Dour
4/5
Really liked this, listened a couple of times.
Fishbone
3/5
Kinda fun, but got old towards the end.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
About a third of this is great.
Super Furry Animals
2/5
I kind of admire the variety of styles, but nothing stood out.
1/5
I get downright giddy when one of the worst rated albums pops up. This did not disappoint. Utter dogshit.
Dr. Dre
1/5
Tuff Negroes talking about dicks. I thought this was supposed to be a classic?
Teenage Fanclub
4/5
Hadn't heard this before, even though I was aware it was highly rated.
Slipknot
2/5
Probably would have liked this when I was 12.
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
Wasn't bad at all, but probably won't listen again
Elvis Costello
5/5
One of the all-time greatest debut albums.
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
I expected this to sound incredibly dated, and it does, but I'd much rather listen to this than any modern-day hip hop.
4/5
Never heard of Suba or any of the other artists on this album. Really enjoyed it, more so on the second listen.
The Beau Brummels
2/5
Why?
Blondie
4/5
Very solid.
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
I really don't find anything special about this. Just standard 80s alternative rock. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing that needs to be celebrated.
LL Cool J
2/5
Not at all interested.
Sabu
3/5
Nice change of pace
Public Enemy
4/5
My least favorite genre, and the third hip hop album in the last 8 days, so I wasn't looking forward to this. But god damn, this was really good, both musically and lyrically.
Nitin Sawhney
2/5
Bland. Not at all interesting or challenging.
Billie Holiday
2/5
Didn't exactly want to turn it off, but it wasn't really interesting.
Kanye West
4/5
I never would have listened to Kanye on my own. Gotta admit, this is really good.
Laura Nyro
2/5
Sounds like show tunes for a musical that thankfully was never made.
The Pharcyde
4/5
Fun album.
The Killers
4/5
I'm a generation older than the target demographic, but good songs are good songs.
Tina Turner
2/5
Bloated 80s album. Better Be Good to Me and Steel Claw were OK.
Kraftwerk
2/5
Like a lot of bands, I think they peaked with their debut.
The Incredible String Band
2/5
So bad it's good. I think The Minotaur's Song is the inspiration for Monty Pythons Lumberjack Song.
Les Rythmes Digitales
1/5
Even if I did like electronica, I would still think this album sucks.
Slipknot
1/5
2 slipknot albums? Sorry, this is shit.
Don McLean
3/5
I really wanted to shit all over this since I've heard the title track enough for 1001 lifetimes. The rest of the albums not too bad. He's got a good voice, and is a decent enough songwriter.
Green Day
3/5
Not nearly as fun as their early stuff
AC/DC
3/5
Never was much of an AC/DC fan, but at least you know what you're getting. This didn't disappoint.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
Great album from a criminally underrated band.
Parliament
3/5
Tasty but a little same-y.
Wild Beasts
2/5
I didn't think this is as terrible as some of the reviews made it out to be, but then again it wasn't good.
Isaac Hayes
4/5
Very smooth.
Portishead
2/5
Listened less than 24 hours ago, can't remember a thing about it.
The Beta Band
2/5
Just as boring as the other Beta Band album on this list.
Lou Reed
2/5
Jesus Christ, this is the most depressing shit I've ever heard.
The Vines
2/5
Obviously trying to emulate Nirvana, not pulling it off.
Frank Ocean
1/5
Someone I love recently told me I need to remove the word "pussy" from my vocabulary so I can't give an honest review of this album.
Nightmares On Wax
3/5
Decent background music but otherwise not that interesting.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
Way more accessible than Trout Mask Replica
Manu Chao
2/5
Never heard of this artist, then again I never went to Padre Island for spring break.
The xx
2/5
The best thing about this album is that it's only 39 minutes.
Soft Cell
3/5
Pretty original in 1981 (other than maybe Thomas Dolby), and an obvious influence on 1980s New Wave.
Talking Heads
5/5
This kicked off an all-day Talking Heads listen for me. I'll give 5 stars to all their albums.
Alice Cooper
3/5
I'd heard the hits before, but I don't think I've listened to a full Alice Cooper album before. It was more than I expected, and I can see why he's still cranking out albums as of last year.
Public Enemy
4/5
This is infinitely better than modern hip hop
Madonna
2/5
Like a Prayer is a really good song. Express Yourself is OK. The rest is horribly over-produced.
Spiritualized
4/5
Great album for relaxing.
Meat Loaf
5/5
I've bashed several albums here with "I'd probably like this if I was 13". Well, I was 13 when this came out, and you can bet your ass I loved it. Way, way over the top, and a lot of fun. Great memories!
Talking Heads
5/5
2nd Talking Heads album in a week, but no complaints - they're both 5 stars. This may be my favorite TH album, with Fear of Music a close second.
Mercury Rev
4/5
Reminds me a lot of the Spiritualized album from a few days ago. Love the singing saw.
10cc
1/5
Kind of a cross between Steely Dan and Frank Zappa, but only the annoying parts.
Bob Dylan
5/5
The tail end of the greatest 3-album run in music history. Visions of Johanna and Sad Eyed Lady are criminally underrated.
Lambchop
2/5
Lambchop has some good songs, unfortunately none of them are on this album.
Fred Neil
2/5
The Dolphins and Everybody's Talkin were OK, the rest was forgettable. He does have a good voice though.
Gang Starr
2/5
Not my thing
4/5
Haven't listened to this since high school. This one really aged well.
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
This might not be too bad without the vocals.
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
3/5
Don't listen to much salsa, but this was nice.
Boston
5/5
I'd just be a hater if I gave this less than 5 stars. This album alone is probably why every city has a classic rock station.
Also, interesting story about how this album got made.
Klaxons
2/5
Never heard of this band before.
This just got worse the longer it went on.
Queen Latifah
2/5
Not horrible, but not for me.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
Supposedly you have to listen to this 7 times before you "get it". I'm retired and have all the time in the world, but there's no way in hell I'm listening to this again.
The Adverts
3/5
I thought I'd heard all the first generation punk bands worth hearing, but not this one. Gary Gilmore's Eyes stands out.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Living for the City and Higher Ground are fantastic.
Mike Ladd
2/5
Different, still didn't like it.
Incredible Bongo Band
3/5
Very nice funk, but kind of a novelty record.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
I always thought this sounded unfinished, especially lyric-wise. Makes sense now that I read the backstory.
Still, there are some great songs here. Particularly Atlantic City and Reason to Believe.
Beastie Boys
3/5
Wasn't looking forward to listening to this, but this was a pleasant surprise. I like the live instruments.
Django Django
2/5
Saw "art rock" and prepared myself for some pretentious bullshit.
The 2 instrumentals aren't bad, but the rest sounds like commercial jingles.
The Stone Roses
4/5
This has everything that was good about the 80s.
Iron Maiden
2/5
Thought this was better than Number of the Beast. Still sucked tho.
The Allman Brothers Band
5/5
There's a reason this is considered the best live album of all time.
Hawkwind
4/5
Will definitely listen again. Didn't especially care for the spoken word parts, but the music (particularly Lemmy's bass) more than made up for it.
Pink Floyd
3/5
Nowhere near as good as 70s Pink Floyd, but a lot better than Syd Barrett's solo albums.
Massive Attack
2/5
Disappointed
Jimmy Smith
2/5
I'm hardly a jazz afficionado, but it seems odd to have an organ as the feature instrument.
Jungle Brothers
2/5
Had to go to youtube, wasn't worth it.
Louis Prima
2/5
Kinda fun, very dated.
The Boo Radleys
2/5
Mediocre.
The Style Council
2/5
Hard to believe this is the same guy who led The Jam. Something must have happened to his testicles between 82 and 84.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
In my top 10. Not a weak song on here.
Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
Not a huge fan of swing, but this is about as good as it gets.
a-ha
2/5
Went in with low expectations and I wasn't wrong. 615 albums in, and this is the most milquetoast one so far.
The Doors
3/5
Always thought the Doors were overrated, but Roadhouse Blues is pretty damn good.
Carole King
5/5
So many of these songs are standards by now. She can sure write a song. 5 stars, no question.
Shuggie Otis
3/5
The tunes were pretty tasty soul/funk but the sound quality, at least to me, left a lot to be desired.
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Immigrant Song just flat-out rocks. Tangerine and That's the Way were nice.
Suicide
3/5
Not something I'd listen to every day, but definitely belongs on this list.
The Sonics
2/5
While I agree that Garage Rock deserves some spots on this list, there are tons of better representatives than this. How about something with less than 9 covers?
Beastie Boys
1/5
Cringey and it sucked
Beyoncé
2/5
My first time knowingly listening to a Beyonce song, much less a full album.
God, I'm so glad my formative years were the 70s and 80s!
The Human League
2/5
Not nearly as bad as I expected.
Ray Charles
2/5
Really not a fan of the strings or the background vocals. But Ray's voice is great.
The Who
4/5
Personally I have no problem with live albums being on this list. Really enjoyed this one.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
Some good moments.
Turbonegro
1/5
Never heard of these guys, and after hearing how hilariously bad this album was, I thought maybe they were Norway's version of Spinal Tap. Apparently they're sincere, which makes it even funnier.
Hanoi Rocks
4/5
For some reason I expected lame 80s hair metal, but this is a lot closer to the New York Dolls. Very pleasant surprise, will definitely listen again.
Franz Ferdinand
3/5
Didn't really appeal to me, but 2 stars feels too low.
Brian Wilson
1/5
Brian Wilson died today, I wonder if everybody's getting this album tonight.
RIP, but I despise the Beach Boys, and this sounds exactly like them.
The Waterboys
5/5
In my all time top 20.
Lana Del Rey
1/5
Still waiting for something interesting to happen.
Taylor Swift
3/5
Way better than I anticipated.
U2
2/5
U2 had a pretty good run, but this is the one where they started going downhill.
Merle Haggard
3/5
Solid old-school country, but nothing outstanding.
Fairport Convention
3/5
Made me want to listen again. 3 stars for now.
ABBA
3/5
Ear candy.

Digital Underground
1/5
More lame than bad. But pretty bad too.
Tortoise
2/5
Not what I expected
Jane's Addiction
2/5
Musically this is pretty good, but Perry Farrell's voice ruins it.
Throbbing Gristle
1/5
The opposite of the Holy Grail for this site. Deserving of the lowest rating.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
As great as Born to Run is, this is just as good.
The La's
3/5
Maybe a stretch for this to make the list, but all in all not too bad. Some of side 2 reminds me a little bit of the early Stones.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
2/5
Heard of them, but hadn't heard them. Very disappointing. Juvenile even for 1971.
B.B. King
2/5
Really underwhelmed to be honest.
Pet Shop Boys
1/5
Seriously? 3 Pet Shop Boys albums on this list?
5/5
5 stars, no question. My favorite Bowie album, and in my all-time top 10.
Beatles
3/5
Probably their worst album other than Yellow Submarine. Still 3 stars easily.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
A letdown from his first 2 albums, but still pretty good.
Marilyn Manson
1/5
I had Throbbing Gristle about 10 albums ago, and I thought Genesis P Orridge might be the biggest attention whore who ever lived. I stand corrected.
Ian Dury
2/5
Not horrible, but nothing I'd want to hear again.
Madness
2/5
I swear I never heard of "English music hall" as a genre until yesterday's Ian Dury album. Can't say I'm a fan.
As far as Madness are concerned, I like their Ska stuff way more than this.
2/5
Sounds like U2 trying to sound like Queen.
The Prodigy
3/5
Not as good as the Fat of the Land, but still good.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
One of my top 5 all-time. Since 1979 I probably haven't gone 3 months without putting this on.
The Electric Prunes
2/5
Just put Nuggets on the list already.
2/5
Pretty stereotypical country, both music and lyrics-wise.
Jeru The Damaja
1/5
Not for me
MGMT
2/5
First song made me think this might be something. Then, absolutely nothing.

Adele

The Darkness
2/5
Had some moments but overall didn't enjoy.

4/5
Not as earth-shattering as Ziggy or Low, but still pretty damn good.
Slade
2/5
Started fun, then kinda got old.
Pavement
3/5
I bought Crooked Rain when it came out, and was very underwhelmed. Hadn't listened to Pavement since, so I had low expectations.
Actually liked this one, particularly the first song.
The Avalanches
3/5
Never heard of this band, but then I don't listen to much of this type of music. I did enjoy it though.

2Pac
2/5
Not for me.

I was never a fan back in the 90s when they were all over the radio, and I would never have played this on my own if not for this site. But I gotta admit, this isn't bad at all.

3/5
Nothing outstanding, but pretty solid.

Only heard these guys on the radio in the 90s, never listened to a full album.
First half was pretty strong, worth a re-listen.
Jacques Brel
2/5
Didn't enjoy
Pantera
3/5
I don't listen to 90s metal at all, but this was OK.
Devendra Banhart

Pretty interesting, should listen again.
Barry Adamson
2/5

Probably overrating this, but it bring back a lot of good memories.
Aerosmith
2/5
Waste of time
Genesis

Love the DBT, although this one isn't my favorite.
The Libertines
3/5
Ok, not great
Billy Bragg
4/5
Hadn't listened to this in a while. Definitely belongs on this list.
Al Green
4/5
Great voice, great musicianship. Probably wouldn't have sought this out on my own.
Miles Davis
2/5
Admittedly beyond me.
The Band
4/5
2 all-time classics. The rest is not too shabby either.
Suede
2/5
Nothing remotely original. Another poor man's U2.
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
Just background music, which is OK
Steve Earle
4/5
This site needs motor alt/outlaw country.
David Bowie
2/5
Sorry, he was at least 30 years past his prime when this album came out.
Cypress Hill
3/5
If I have to listen to hip hop, this isn't bad.
Yes
4/5
Not quite as good as the other 2 Yes albums on this list. 4 stars is generous but I do love me some 70s Prog.
Earth, Wind & Fire
3/5
Never listened to EW&F growing up. Only recognized Shining Star by name, but I'd definitely heard 3 or 4 others before.
All in all it was enjoyable but kinda wore out it's welcome a little by the end.
American Music Club
3/5
Pretty standard
TV On The Radio
2/5
"Art rock". Exactly what I thought it would be.
Love
3/5
Really stands up well after 58 years.
Depeche Mode
2/5
Wasn't a fan in the 80s, still not a fan.
Sugar
4/5
Very underrated
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Smooth as a babys bottom
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Robert Dimery can take Morrissey and Nick Cave and fuck right off.
DJ Shadow
4/5
I'm over 800 albums in. Hip hop and Electronica are my least favorite genres. But this album is incredible. Or at least incredibly interesting, considering it's almost entirely samples.
So far there are probably over 300 albums that I doubt you really need to hear before you die, but I'm glad I listened to this one.
3/5
Not much of a Kinks fan, but this was OK.
The Chemical Brothers
2/5
I guess the point is to be repetitive, but it's not for me.
Herbie Hancock
3/5
Sound like the soundtrack to something fun.
