4/5 Highlights: career opportunities, cheat, protex blue, London burning, white rot

4 stars

This is the start of Brit punk. Sounds basic to me because it is the blueprint

Punk rock at its finest.

Not always been the biggest punk fan but really liked this. Punk sounds but with enough variety and musically engaging to keep me interested.

An unpolished gem for sure. By itself, nothing too spectacular here. But knowing what type of work they were to produce later, you can hear the foundation in this debut. That alone is enough to round up from a 3.5 to a 4.

I like this a lot, but still a bit raw and, perhaps, not enough variance in the second half. Unfairly, perhaps I am comparing with what comes next.

Oh hey its the clash album they released before they went shit

London Calling was a record filled with enough content as is to prove to me that The Clash deserved their spot in the punk hall of fame. I didn’t think I ever really needed to hear another record from them. It’s interesting now that I’ve had the chance to go back and become acquainted with the roots of this legendary band. As I’ve said before in the past, I don’t usually do well with just punk music. Listening to the genre at its most barebones and simple, around the period where the word punk actually started being used, usually isn’t my thing. I view it the same way I look at classic 50s rock and roll. I don’t really have a problem with any part of it, but I need something more in order to stay engaged. This debut from the band is some of the most strait-laced, quick and to the point punk music you can find. Which explains its presence as one of the genre’s founding fathers. I should really say a founding father of its placement in the mainstream though. Snobby punk fans could probably name two dozen other records that came before which they think are better. Either way, it’s still an important piece of music history, whether or not you like how popular The Clash is. I was prepared for a relatively enjoyable experience, but not one I was going to write home about. Thankfully, I got more out of this than I anticipated. Through listening to this, I’ve realized Joe Strummer honestly has the Goldilocks of all punk singing voices. It’s not too whiny, but it’s not obvious that he was trying too hard to sound old and cool. The vocals are often my least favorite part about this era of punk too. The guitar and bass playing are fantastic. But I’m not so sold on the drumming. It’s generally pretty basic throughout, aside from a few moments. I don’t recall it being anything mind blowing on London Calling, but it was definitely more unique than this. Other than that, the songs I don’t like are just too basic for my taste. But I believe this could act as a really great entry point into punk, and still stands the test of time. Easily better than Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols too. Rating: 7/10

Simple, fun, and punky. Good music to yell along to.

One of the best punk albums, full of energy and some glimpses of the social commentary that The Clash would be known for latter in their career. However, I chose not to rate it with five stars because, though it may come as a political statement, the production does not sound as good as other Clash and punk albums.

This is a great album. There are no bad songs, and I like this type of punk. It’s not too dirty or fast paced

The Clash proving that you don't have to be a bad musician to play punk. It's controversial, but nonetheless true.

Good early British punk!

Classic punk - must listen

Upbeat songs and catchy. I liked this one 4 ⭐️

One of the albums that put punk on the map. It's angry, it's got attitude, and it's what started "The Only Band That Matters".

Very good debut, highlighting how the Clash had the potential to be more than just a three chord clash outfit, although tracks like White Riot showed they could do that too. Some highlights include their cover of Police and Thieves, Career Opportunities and London's Burning. Joe Strummer's lyrics are spot on for the politics and social issues of the time

God bless 'em.

bangers

important album in punk music. the clash stood out as definitely a punk band that didn’t sound like any other punk band that i can recall. this one’s a special one, kids. highlights: “janie jones” “white riot” “hate and war” “cheat”

awesome

Love the Clash

Fuuuuuck yes! Couldn't ask for a better opening track to an album! Warm and fuzzy analog anger! Haven't ever heard Police and Thieves before, and it's awesome. I was either tapping my foot, bopping my head, or drumming on something for every best of this album. Fantastic album

It’s about as classic as punk rock can get. A classic debut for a classic band. All the aggression, rage, and socially rebellious lyrics parceled nicely in a 35-minute package. Get in, cause havoc, leave. I’l admit that the tracks are a tad repetitive, and Police and Thieves felt a little out of place for me. But these are very minor complaints. Punk rock albums all have similar sounding tracks and lyrically Police and Thieves fits very well. Overall, it a near perfect effort. Favorite track: London’s Burning Other hits: Janie Jones, Career Opportunities, Remote Control, 48 Hours, Garageland

Wow, I really enjoyed listening to this album from start to end. Several songs that I knew and good reminders of more obscure numbers.

Agreed. The Clash are required listening. I don't think this is quite as good as London Calling, but still strong.

Classic punk. Would listen again to the entire album.

Favourite track: Police & Thieves

Great punk.

hella brit hella punk

Clash never disappoints in classic British invasion punk

Very important British punk rock album. Favourite Songs: Janie Jones, I'm so Bored with the U.S.A., London's Burning, Police & Thieves. Least Favourite Songs: Cheat, Protex Blue.

I can appreciate how good this album is, given it's importance in the punk scene, even if it is not really my cup of tea. Drums were amazing throughout

Pretty good 70s Brit pop album. Would listen to again

Pretty great debut. A lil one note, but still some killer songs on here

Classic early punk. Light on technical ability, Heavy on angst and lack of F's.

Real good; I think I like this the most out of the Clash albums we've heard so far. 4/5

Really enjoyed this album. I've heard it, but the US version, long ago. I'm sad that Clash City Rockers isn't on this one, but it's very good. I love Police and Thieves a bunch. 4/5

Probably a better punk album than London Calling, especially the US version. B+

Absolutely love this album, couple of weaker tracks otherwise would be a solid 5 stars

3.5 stars rounded up.

Loved it

3.5/5 Some really enjoyable punk rock, easily digestible, and flowing well throughout. There are truly great moments, but most of the album is just good. Janie Jones 4.5/5 Remote Control 3/5 I'm so Bored with the U.S.A. 4.5/5 White Riot 3/5 Hate & War 3.5/5 What's My Name 4.5/5 Deny 3.5/5 London's Burning 3.5/5 Career Opportunities 3/5 Cheat 3.5/5 Protex Blue 3/5 Police & Thieves 5/5 (FAV) 48 Hours 2.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Garageland 3/5

I’ve never been smitten with The Clash but perhaps it’s time for a reevaluation. I did like this album even though the cover of Junior Murvin’s ‘Police and Thieves’ is not stellar. Solid stuff

Just good music 4

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would! I think I listened to the clash when I was younger and it never really hit me. This album though! Really good high energy. White Riot is a bit weird, like I get the idea but you’re allowed to riot with the black people, probably be more effective that way. Anyway that’s a nitpick. It DOES get a little tiring toward the end…

This is quintessential punk—and I love me some good punk. I'm gonna go punch a cop

Somewhat better than what I remembered but I still struggle to understand why they're the so-called "only band that matters"

I enjoyed this so much I listened to both the UK and US versions.

Good album. Didn't know about this one.

Very punchy and fun songs. I don't think I'll be coming back to this album very often except when I'm in cool good mood. My favorite song was Police and Thieves.

This is really well made punk, maybe it sounds even " too good"? After all, punk is not supposed to be about clever musicality, it is about raw expression of emotion (usually anger). So maybe I like the Sex Pistols better, or laer punk crossovers. But, this is a very good album and Simonon is a great and a bit of a musician's bassist.

The Clash just never ceases to amaze

I regret giving London Calling only 4/5 and this should be lower. But it’s still 4/5 for me.

This was really enjoyable. I love the clash and I love joe strummer’ voice. While it wasn’t as creative or ambitious as London calling or combat rock, it was still a very well done punk album.

Hi energy dance rhythm and lyrical rebellion mixed with lots of dirty screaming guitar. No wonder The Clash made it so big. They may not have invented punk but they taught the world how good it can be.

I listened to London Calling a big ago, and it was by no exaggeration the best punk album I’ve listened to and perhaps one of the best rock ones ever. I expected nothing less from their debut and boy did they not disappoint. This record is filled with the same energy, catchiness, and influential lyricism on every track. For a debut, it is absolutely impeccable that they came out swinging with an idea in mind and sort of sound that stuck through all their later albums. However, I must save that 5 for London Calling, truly their best album.

Hmm. Yeah, it's very good, but it also feels just a touch generic and like they hadn't quite found their sound. Something major happens between this and London Calling to see them go much more muscular and meaningful.

YESSSSS THE CLASHHH

Love London Calling but really enjoyed this

awesum

I knew a lot of these songs, but this was my first time kistening ti the full album.

Loved it

Foundational Punk album: the steady delivery of vocals is catchy and addictive

Previously I was only familiar with London Calling, but I loved this album. Solid hooks and great songwriting

A great favorite of mine from my teenage years. Always a pleasure to relisten

So good!!

Gear: Focal Clear (ZMFed) Artwork: perfekte "Stanger Things"-Poster-Requisite Mix (2013 Remaster): laut aber gar nicht mal so scheisse! Musik: Punk mag ich nich. The Clash mag ich schon. "London Calling" mag ich aber noch was lieber. Wertung: 🧷🧷🧷(🧷)/5

Got a lot of raw charm, & some top tunes

This is a proper punk album. Spiky, loud, quick paced - a really good album. Unpopular opinion but I think nits way better than London Calling.

Some solid early punk. It was an enjoyable listen.

noch keine top hits

Loved the raw energy of this first album. London Calling gets the accolades, but I prefer this album.

There's a scent of cigarettes, cheap beer, and the feeling of saliva spit in your face from a small club when listening to this band. I don't love punk, but it seems so much better when the Clash are doing it. Raw, edgy, not perfect...but it works! This album pulls you into wanting to jump in the mosh pit and risk serious injury...even at an old age.

Punk isn’t a high rated genre for me but I really enjoy The Clash. This album is no exception, it’s listenable and carries solid energy without getting aggressive.

No "big" hits, but still a great album.

lord thanks for them

That’s some good, angry, head bashin, old school punk. Slashing guitar, banging drums, and fast paced screaming vocals. Don’t remember any of these songs as stand outs, (songs are all pretty similar) but all identifiable as The Clash. Strong finish with Police & Thieves, 48 Hours, and Garageland. Great debut effort, like it more now than in 77. (3.8*s)

Good not great. 3-4 stars. Rounded up.

I can’t remember what it was like. It’s been too long. On to the next one.

A very formative album for me

The Clash to me have this energy and style where it makes ya just want to go out get drunk and party.

Classic

great album very playable listened to it a few times

the clash are such an important band to me. they were the first punk and first political band i ever got into. they opened up the door for me in terms of punk music, and i genuinely learned a lot about the history of late 70s uk and just punk in general by getting into them. London Calling is their masterpiece of course, but their self-titled is easily my second fave. there are a few songs on here that i think are just fine, but most are the fucking best. Police & Thieves, I’m So Bored, Career Opportunities, the list goes on. classic. i’m saving my 5 for London Calling, but this gets a 4.5 in my book.

This is a top album, a true classic, and one where every track hits. The Clash’s debut album feels like the blueprint for British punk. It captures the energy, attitude, and urgency of the time perfectly. It’s raw, fast, and direct, but there’s also a sharpness to the songwriting that lifts it above a lot of other punk records from the same era. Tracks like White Riot and Remote Control are punk at its absolute best, full of aggression and purpose, but still tight and memorable. The whole album moves at pace and never really lets up, which is exactly what you want from a record like this. Favourite track: White Riot, fast, aggressive, and completely iconic Least favourite track: London’s Burning, still good but doesn’t hit the same level as the rest Album artwork: Iconic, simple and instantly recognisable

2 hours of sleep this day. Gotta give it that relisten but I liked what I heard…I think

I'm having a hard time because I loved this album and want to give it a 5. However, it is not as good as London Calling which is obviously a 5 which then makes me think how can this be a 5 if something is much better is also a 5. Therefore a am giving it a 4 but a high 4.

I've listened to Combat Rock and London Calling a lot. I'm a big fan of The Clash and I enjoyed this album! I'm not sure quite how to describe it, but they're a punk band that has taken the hard edges off? I have had a hard time with the grungier and harder albums on this playlist, but The Clash don't have whatever qualities turn me off from those. I liked this album less than CR and LC, but it was a good listen. No stand-out songs to report, but I enjoyed having it on. I think a 35m album with songs between 2 and 3m long is my ideal. 8/10

Pretty good but .

Seriously classic, tho not my favorite album of theirs. I had, and still have issues with the density of their accents.. ha. It's a little too fast sounding too.. so due to my nitpicking critiques I give a harsh 3 stars only. I'll listen to it again today and see if that changes it to a4. Yeah def a4!

4 stars

Overall... Pretty good. Some of the guitar work was lack luster, but the attitude was brilliant.

I grew up hating bands like The Clash. It was the late 90s/early 90s and punk had become mainstream so the edge of bands like this seemed manufactured and forced because that's what record labels had started pumping out. Now that I'm 20+ years removed from that time, this music is great. It's energetic, it's got a cause. I love it. I was moving to the music the whole way through.

finally some good fucking food

Though not my favorite Clash album, it's one of my favorites. Straightforward punk with a hunt of that Jamaican influence. The only band that matters.

A great 70s punk album

Rocking

Amazing. Pure unfiltered energy from the very first track until the end of the 35min album. Great lyrics showing unusually progressive ideas of the band members for those times. The sound is punky and chaotic and yet there’s so much interesting stuff going on musically in the background, it must have really made them stand out back in the day. London Calling is probably among my top 10 records ever and this one is not as good, not as polished and innovative but I think it shows better the spirit of London music scene in late 1970s. You can’t stop singing along to White Riot!

solid punk rock album

The clash, what more can be said.

You know, if I had a nickel for every time in the past week that I got one of the greatest prog rock albums of all time immediately followed by a 70s English punk album with a hint of reggae influence, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. However, while Cut by The Slits, as solid of an album as it is, isn't generally considered one of the greatest punk albums of all time, the debut album from The Clash is. The Clash is one of the most iconic and important punk bands out there, or so I've heard. After listening to this album, I can see why. This is a damn good album right here. I enjoyed it. There's a decent amount of variety here, which in an early punk album is practically a godsend. In terms of sound, the tone is consistent but not repetitive. When it comes to lyrics, while there are common themes throughout the album, each song doesn't feel like a rehashing of the last one. The sound, by the way, is quite good. I actually like the singing! I really like the guitar tone. The bass and drums get their jobs done perfectly. For some reason, this album feels longer than it actually is. I don't know why, but this just felt a bit longer than 35 minutes for some reason. That isn't a bad thing though. There's good messages in this album. There's even a cover of a reggae song that fits perfectly into the album! Overall, I really like this album. It is definitely one of the better punk albums I've gotten so far. High 4/5. I'm probably gonna save the 5 for London Calling, whenever I get it.

Fun, high energy! 4/5

Punk. 4

One helluva debut album!

01) Janie Jones - 8,5 02) Remote Control - 8,0 03) I'm So Bored with the USA - 8,0 04) White Riot - 8,5 05) Hate and War - 8,0 06) What's My Name - 8,0 07) Deny - 7,5 08) London's Burning - 7,5 09) Career Opportunities -7,5 10) Cheat - 7,0 11) Protex Blue - 7,0 12) Police and Thieves - 8,5 13) 48 Hours - 8,0 14) Garageland - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,82 (78/100) Current Ranking: 77/172 I prefer "London Calling", maybe because it sounds a bit less punk. The songs are short, which is a good thing, but after a few songs, they all start to sound the same.

great album

Super Duper

It's The Clash—classic, raw, honest Punk.

Good album

Two Clash albums back to back. Not a bad week. Maybe it’s because London Calling is perfect that this felt a bit lesser than. It’s not bad. There’s some great tunes. But it’s no London Calling. 4/5

God I love The Clash.

London Calling is better but it’s not like there’s lots to hate on this album and honestly I, too, am bored with the USA. I do really like Police & Thieves, probably more than I ever did.

I literally wore a clash shirt this week haha. And I don’t know the band that well so this is good.

good punk album with some great tracks, good debut for the band

Solid 4.

Classic punk rock

Yeah it's okay

A great, classic punk album

They for sure got better but this is a pretty solid first album. They sound well put together and meld almost perfectly for being so early in their career.

Impressive production for an early punk album. The sound is closer on the spectrum to rock and roll. I really enjoyed this listened through a few times

Good debut album for this band not the level of London calling yet but certainly not bad...

Rough. Raw. Not pretty. Game changer.

A more laid back (?) punk album than I’ve previously heard from them. Not a huge Clash fan, but I enjoyed this album. Low 4

favourite song: janie jones the clash are good arent they! probably not my favourite record of theirs but still a lot of fun. always impressed when an album opener is the best song but the album still doesnt drag.

14 songs in 35 minutes? That’s hot

Whoever said punk is dead is wrong because I can still listen to music from the 70s

An incredible start from the Clash. It's so funny that they're reduced to just being a punk band when their music is so much more than that. The Clash is a combination of a lot of different musical ideas expressed with protest songs and political commentary (which might be why the band is considered punk). This record, while not their best, is super fun and fantastic to listen to.

Truly classic punk album, no doubt. Heard every song and it will take you way back.

Tämä on aika prototyyppilevy, siis perustuksien valaja -mielessä. Jyrää eteenpäin biisi biisiltä punkrockina, mutta jokainen biisi on erilainen. Hyvät sanoitukset. En ole aivan taivaissa, mutta nautin.

Molemmilla puolilla on pienet suvantonsa. Loput on rokkia, jota parempaa saa hakea. 4,5

british to its core! also an album cover ive seen a lot and the music is great. Nothing i would listen a lot but its a solid album that can be played through without having the urge to skip a song imo.

I’ve never run thru this one before. It’s The Clash, I like The Clash and it was a quick hitter with no duds. Police and Thieves is fantastic, not sure how I missed that one. 4 stars

First time hearing this group - will listen to more.

👍🏾

A punk rock classic. While I prefer the more fully-formed punk that followed soon after, it is tough to dislike these gleeful rockers. I miss some of the hits on the US release.

Solid clash album. Not my favorite one but atill good

Better than I expected!

Maybe the most hardcore album the Clash ever recorded. Raw, fiery, intense yet so solid. To think it gets better in two years when they released an absolute masterpiece. But this is a good start.

I like the raw, unfiltered attitude and garage band vibe their early stuff has. You really get the sense that they're blowing off steam together. Police & Thieves was a standout, being a reggae cover, so it's funny knowing that the creators of the song hated their punk rock interpretation (though Bob Marley was a fan). The harmonica in the final song was a nice surprise and I would have loved to hear more of it.

Classic 77 punk album. Hell of a debut as well. Solid through and through and makes an immediate stance that lasts their entire career. Great production as well, love the bass tone through this entire album

not as poppy/polished as London Calling but there are a lot of great songs on this album. Police and Thieves is one of my favorites.

Highlights: I’m so bored with the USA, White Riot. Rating: 8/10

'I'm so Bored with the U.S.A.' komt wat dichter bij de boze punk van de Sex Pistols. Police & Thieves

"Punk is the future!" 7,5/10 Highlights Janie Jones London's Burning Police & Thieves Garageland

Solid punk fun

punk as expected, but almost more of an anthem

Classic

Rock und Punk in Urform.

nice to have a little punk and primitive music on a random Friday. Fun indeed.

The only Clash album I've listened to before today is London Calling (which I bought because of the 1001 albums book), but it's been a hot minute since I've listened to it. This self titled effort from The Clash is pretty good. The best thing that this album has going for it is it's distinctly The Clash; the band never tries to be The Ramones or The Sex Pistols, and they do a great job of crafting their own unique sound. The guitar playing is pretty straightforward, but there's something unique in the tone that really sets The Clash apart. I enjoy both Jones's and Strummer's vocals, and I was glad that they both got some time on lead vocals on this album. My favorite thing about this album was the lyrics. For what feels like the hundredth time on this list, it's yet another album singing about things that still plague the world today: racial tension and inequality, the slog of working life, the neverending funding of war, and on and on. The band does such a great job of channeling anger and disillusionment into their lyrics, and their own brand of punk politics further differentiates them from other punk acts of the time. Overall, this isn't my favorite album by any stretch, but it's really well done, and it's an important moment in the history of rock music.

Classic

4.78/5

An excellent debut album and a classic. Not my favorite record from The Clash, but it has some great moments and captures a great preview of what was to come from the band.

A straight up and down great punk album. Some of their more ambitious work to come with mixing genres and tones are maybe more interesting but I have pretty few complaints here. A classic for a reason. Fave track: Police and Thieves

A classic of the genre and worth a second spin

Grandiosos en su género.

upbeat music, angry lyrics. clear message to be shared. musically its mediocre by the standard of 2024 but the message remains relevant. the influence and impact can be seen and heard in so much music its too much to name.

I was planning to give it a 3 but then I realised that I've been tapping my feet for the last 35 minutes so I've got to give it a 4

The Clash is the debut album by the British punk rock band The Clash, released on April 8, 1977, through CBS Records. The album is widely regarded as one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums in the history of punk rock, as well as one of the best debut albums of all time. The album features 14 tracks, with a total length of 35:18, and was produced by Mickey Foote, a former sound engineer for the Sex Pistols. The album’s lyrics are mostly political and social, reflecting the band’s views and experiences as young working-class rebels in London during the late 1970s. The album covers topics such as unemployment, racism, police brutality, drug abuse, consumerism, and the music industry. The album also expresses the band’s admiration for reggae and rockabilly music, as well as their disdain for the mainstream rock scene. The album’s lead single, “White Riot”, is a call for white youths to join the black riots against oppression and injustice. The album’s closing track, “Garageland”, is a response to a negative review by Charles Shaar Murray, who called the band “the sort of garage band that should be speedily returned to the garage, preferably with the motor still running” 1. The album’s music is mostly based on fast and furious rhythms, loud and distorted guitars, and raw and aggressive vocals, creating a powerful and energetic sound. The album also incorporates some elements of reggae, ska, and rockabilly, adding some diversity and melody to the sound. The album’s production is simple and lo-fi, highlighting the authenticity and urgency of the music. The album was recorded in three weekend sessions at CBS Studios in London, with a budget of £4,000. The album was mixed by Simon Humphries, who added some effects and overdubs to enhance the sound. The album’s pros are: The album is a landmark in the punk rock movement, inspiring and influencing countless bands and artists across genres and generations. The album is a bold and honest statement of the band’s vision and values, challenging and criticizing the status quo and the establishment. The album is a showcase of the band’s talent and creativity, blending and experimenting with different styles and influences, and delivering memorable and catchy songs. The album is a reflection of the band’s passion and enthusiasm, conveying a sense of excitement and urgency, and engaging and empowering the listeners. The album’s cons are: The album is a product of its time and context, and some of its lyrics and themes may seem dated or irrelevant to modern audiences. The album is a victim of its own success and reputation, and some of its songs and sounds may seem clichéd or overplayed to some listeners. The album is a result of the band’s inexperience and limitations, and some of its songs and sounds may seem rough or amateurish to some listeners. The album is a compromise of the band’s artistic and commercial interests, and some of its songs and sounds may seem diluted or inconsistent to some listeners. In conclusion, The Clash is a brilliant and revolutionary album that established the band as one of the most important and influential acts in the history of rock music. The album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates original and meaningful music, and who wants to experience a blast of punk rock energy and attitude.

good old 70s

Good first album from the ultimate punk band.

Enjoyed the hell out of this album.

Fun (and short!)

Very very Brit Rock in the first couple seconds. I like that it has a bunch of short songs, it pleases my simple monkey brain. I also like the British talk-singing. Boing-boing noise haha.

Its ok.

Points for being the progenitor for a lot of great music, but man it sounds so generic because of how many better copycats that have been released.

(Mai ascoltato prima) Dinamico, carico, mi è piaciuto.

Good English punk album.

listened 2x and liked it quite a bit. 3.8/5

"Janie Jones" was my imaginary punk rock girlfriend when I was filled with teen angst. I had no idea who she really was. She would have been an even cooler girlfriend, it appears. "I'm So Bored with the USA" was my mantra for a while in high school when it fueled my Reagan hatred and justified my disdain for our foreign policy. Like with many songs, I had no idea what the lyrics to "White Riot" were about. I appreciate them even more now but at the time they were perfect for venting teenage energy. These guys were my secret brothers growing up in Wyoming when everyone was listening to Foreigner or some other crapola.

Me encanta ❤️

There are moments both dynamic and biting, but also some raggedness and some sense of being unformed that suggest that future success was in no way assured. This lot got so much better the more they diversified the sound. Conversely, how would we rate this record had they not worked out to be the Clash? Maybe one of the editors saw them live before this came out and was so blown away, etc. etc. Record gets considerably better as it moves along – "Cheat" and "Police & Thieves" and "Garageland" feel like the best cuts on a disc that would be better still with a hit. Proves the theory that first record isn't always the best or coolest. Kind a feel like it's need a clear "hit" or an outright classic track to be a truly world-class debut. Rounding up because, you know, The Clash.

Likely a top 5 genre setting album for punk. The Clash has been noted as "the only band that matters" and you can tell where they are headed on this STD. Their equally influential peers lacked the musicality of the Clash. That ability carried the Clash through waves of stylistic changes and tweaks, creating one of the more well rounded discographies of this time period. That said, this album sneaks a peak at that ability vs some of their contemporaries (looking at you Sex Pistols) but the style and ethos are there. Every track brings something to the table but highlights for me are the opening Janie Jones, I'm so Bored with the USA, Career Opportunities, Police & Thieves (showing early ska reggae influences that would become more prevalent) It's a great album and likely the second starting point for the Clash after London Calling (another excellent album).

Classic Punk Rock. Amazing!

Good but I think London Calling is their best

this explains everything about MAK

The clash comes in with an incredible debut with a piece of anti-administration real rebel music and messages that we have heard time and time again Yet THIS BEING THE ERA where it was founded in song makes this so much more impactful. The highs of this album for me are Remote Control, White Riot, Deny, Career Opportunities, Police and Thieves, and GarageLand. I hear where the Smiths and Ramones and others got influenced by this record even modern punk records like Neck deep self-titled and Mgk pop punk records LOL. I love this album for a long time

Definitely sounds like its time, but you can't hold that against them. It sounds really good for its time at least. Fun, fast, and lots of social commentary. Very punk-y.

Great first album from a great band. Love I’m So Bored in the USA and White Riot, but the album is a great listen throughout.

# Playlist track - What's my name # Notes - It's an amazing punk album! - Punk is not really my thing, but this is really cool.

The world needs is more The Clash.

Good album, not their best album, but still very good.

Great. Influential. Don't really love it.

An energising listen that's for sure. The rawness of the instrumentation and the writing kept me smiling throughout the entire thing

i’m familiar with the clash of course but I’ve never listened to their self-titled debut until now. I really enjoyed this album and you can really hear the conviction in the bands sound, a sign of the things to come from these guys.

Janie Jones - the bass is mixed all the way left. I know older recordings did stuff like this, but it feels really weird and kinda lopsided. I guess I'll see if the whole album is like this

Cool album, I love the Clash but tend to gravitate to their London Calling and later stuff. I also think this album sounds more punk than their later stuff which has a lot of different sounds (but with a punk attitude)

Fantastic punk album, set up the future of the genre. Not a 5 for me because I personally am not that into Mick's vocals, but the music, attitude and lyrical content are great

Wish i hadn't been as musically myopic as i was in the early 80s. I don't remember punk rock being as musical as i find it to be now. Apologies to my friend Steve who tried to get me into punk rock when i was firmly entrenched in the NWOBHM. Some of it did stick; Dead Kennedys, Black Flag. I need to go back to these classic punk bands and see what i may have missed. I got into the later Clash but this album is a rager.

This how you stamp yourself as being here, loud and pissed off at the state of your country.

Overall solid, classic punk. No misses. **Career Opportunities **I'm so Bored with the USA *Remote Control

Punk punks.

Duidelijk 4 sterren.

Big fan of the more poppy-newwave London Calling, and this is clearly a precursor and essential punk listening

Love this album.

It was good, more punk sounding than London Calling which I liked. Will I listen to again: 75%

This type of punk is fun and lively. Instrumentals are upbeat and simple. I enjoyed it despite putting it on as morning background music for cooking. +1 for leftist ideologies and also for actually being a punk album I enjoy. I guess I don’t hate punk.

The Clash - love it or leave it. Irgendwie tönt alles gleich, und trotzdem aufregend, lebendig!

Brilliant Way better than I remember High 4

Am amazing debut album. The Clash were one of the world's best punk bands right out of the gate.

Decent earlyish punk, solid album. 4/5

Ein punkiges Album mit guten Texten.

A quintessential punk album from the late 1970s. I like this album though there are some others from this genre that I like even more. It's a 4 from me.

Pretty good in parts. I don't like punk rock generally, though this was good to exercise to.

I have to give it up for the musicianship and the energy. My preference is London Calling but this is still great

Klassiker, läuft

Funny how what was once so incendiary now sounds pretty normal. Good album still though

4 herrlicher punk

Punk legends. High energy but quite repetitive Love it though

Powerful debut album introducing the core elements of the clash sound which they'd take to the next level over the next few albums. I'm always struck at how accessible clean and poppy this album is for being one of the foundational punk records. Garage rock bands were scuzzier than this, which seems relatively mild compared to like the Stooges. The guitar distortion is distorted but tight and compressed with very controlled playing. The songs have classic blues chord progressions and verse-chorus structures. The bass is fast and loud but melodic like an amped up Jamerson. There's some sneering snarling singing but way more harmonies than screaming and there are some really catchy hooks. Between the vocals guitar leads and bass parts the album is overflowing with melody. 3-4 really standout tracks, the rest is a bit generic but in a genre defining way. Favorites: Remote Control, Police & Thieves, Janie Jones, Deny

I adore the Clash. While this album had a few 5/5 songs on it, I caught my mind wandering a bit during the middle. That said, this still rips.

Classic

I am thankful for the Clash.

I never really got into this album much, although I love London Calling. This one isn't nearly as good as that, but it is great. Obviously a very important one too, in the evolution of punk, and much more interesting than the Sex Pistols album that came out in the same year.

Normally not a fan of punk but this hit different. Bri'ish guy shouting over noise.

Great early punk, rowdy but melodic enough to be catchy, need to listen to more of The Clash

Honesty is a good policy for this review and it will certainly ruffle feathers, but blame it on mood or the circumstances of the day where this album raged vibes of a discount Rolling Stones brought to you by Wish. Halfway through, the reviewer can reason with themselves that perhaps they were a bit harsh with that, that The Clash is at the very least more than a bargain bin import of British rebellion. Truthfully, this unpatriotic and unprovoked attack on The Clash could be exactly the kind of thing they love not to care about. Heaven knows that this will likely never reach their eyes and ears, and it also knows that it will make no difference.

very solid. Classic punk.

Overall this is a pretty good package. There's lots of energy, and some great iconic songs. Some don't work for me, but being a punk album it's quite quick, gets in and out and does it's thing. 3.5 rounded up.

Now we're talking, great classic punk album.

I respect the history and importance of both the clash (the band) and this album. HOWEVER, this album really just did not do it for me. It’s possible that it’s so foundational that to modern ears it just sounds regular. Do to it’s history I’d give it a 4/5 but on pure listening I give it a 3/5

i've always liked the clash and their music a fair amount and while i didn't know the songs here super well, this album was no exception. solid early punk tunes with a clear message and fast, driving guitars and drums. i think they were still finding their footing here and some of the songs later in the album are a bit dull, but i really liked the first few. police & thieves is a decent cover too. overall, it's good, but it's no london calling. favorites: janie jones, remote control, I'm so bored with the USA, white riot

Lots of energy, meaningful songs. Not my cup of tea necessarily but good album.

Good british punk, but it gets old

By the time you get to Hate and War you realise this is not just A N Other one dimensional punk band. What's My Name is a bit Damned like but most sounds original. Lots of exhilarating major key tunes, they always could turn out a timeless melody. Some Jam-like moments. And then Police and Thieves starts to introduce a reggae theme. Pleasant to hear this again after a few decades. The lyrics also still stand the test of time

Great early punk (ish). Enjoyed the different version of London's Calling.

Outstanding punk rock

Amazing album. I can see where so much music coming later got their influences from.

Erittäin kova

Quite the debut - would have like to have listened to it when it was first released, that must have been an experience.

should i stay or should i go

I’m sure this album is incredibly influential. Would play for socialist girls so they think I’m cool & want to kiss me. Was the lead singer a poser because he went to boarding school? So did I - am I a poser too?

Ei mikää combat rock mutta erinomainen

Classic album. Grade A.

Always enjoyed The Clash, but it's been a long time since I have listened to this record. Doing so brought back fond memories of me and my friends listening to it.

Decent. Nowhere as good or focused as London Calling. Police and Thieves definitely the highlight, even though it’s a cover

The Clash were, when on for, absolutely fantastic, but then I find they are pretty variable too. Some of the best here is great and some is forgettable outside its era. Scrapes a 4.

Great!

The similarities to yesterday's Beasty Boys album are obvious: this is a formative album hastily constructed that rode a wave of popularity that the band ultimately got off. There's consequences of that all over, it's rough, the lyrics are often mundane, there's themes here that really aren't ones you want to get behind... It's raw and powerful though, the punchy songs reflect the period and it still feels pretty fresh and lively today.

Really loved it. I heard its influence in much of the punk I grew up with. Def want to dig further into the clash.

Kannte 0 Songs.

raw, driving, consistent

Classic punk album. Favorite songs: I’m so bored with the USA, London’s Burning and Police and Thieves

Just punk in its purest form. Can’t go wrong with it.

Nothing wrong with some classic punk.

This was a lot of fin to listen to. I've always liked the Clash, though probably not to the extent of listening to their catalog album by album. So I had not in fact hear this album which presumably is their first. Many songs I knew, but some I didn't. It's classic Brit punk through and through. While not my favorite band of the genre, it still delivers a rotten down under the bridge with this mohawk huffing paint kind of experience.. Just perfect for when you're feeling pissed at the authorities that hold you down.

Unlike “London Calling,” The Clash’s self-titled offering is a punk blitz from start to finish.

Classic clash album, really love this one top to bottom.

In their debut, the Clash throws out over a dozen simple punk tracks in just 35 minutes. They're minimalist, light, and catchy like the Ramones but more anthemic and nostalgic. It's by far their most consistent album, with a feel-good vibe from start to finish, and only a few skippable tracks. Compared to their other albums, it doesn't have any strong hits. In other words, there's no "Blitzkrieg Bop" but it does have plenty of "Judy is a Punk" tracks. The highlight for me is the 6-minute "Police & Thieves", probably the first ska punk song, especially since The Specials found their breakthrough by opening during the Clash's tour. Favorites: Janie Jones, White Riot, Hate & War, Police & Thieves

Have not listened to much punk rock but the album is decent. Would listen to again.

Was honestly surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Not my style of music usually but this was great. Favorite song: Hate and War - caveat for the last verse

4 out of 5 good punk rock

I've heard the US version hundreds of times. Never heard Deny, Cheat, Protex Blue, or 48 Hours. This version doesn't have Clash City Rockers, Complete Control, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, I Fought the Law, or Jail Guitar Doors. 5 stars for the US version, 4 for this one. Still my favorite Clash album though.

Always enjoyable.

Very distinctive, British and punk. I really liked it.

Solid but not as good as london calling by a very long way

It's fun to hear the Clash being so versatile even on their debut. Makes them far more enjoyable than most other punk bands that usually suffer from more monotonous albums

I like punk. I like The Clash. I like this album. It's less refined than London Calling but that very rawness is what makes it just as good.

I thought the album was excellent - very punk-y, significantly less polished than some of their hits, but also obviously exceptional.

Super cool debut album! This band went on to pump out huge records with catchy songs and this was a great start for them. I gotta say, the singing for me is the weakest part, but it does appeal to the more Punk sound that they were moving to. 8 out of 10

The Clash were always a band I knew if, but never really new much about them until a year ago when I listened to London Calling and found it to be an amazing album (I recall being on the flight home from Reykjavík when listening to this). I look forward to listening to more today. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: White Riot, I’m So Bored With The U.S.A This album didn’t quite have the same pull from be as London Calling, but it was still certainly a very enjoyable listen. Joe Strummer has just a nice imperfect voice. It’s a nice change of pace from a lot of other music where everything is digitised to perfection, as this brings a more raw and human feel. Overall, I enjoyed this although it’s not my favourite Clash album.

Love it.

This album is good all the way through, maintains it's high energy.

Good, but not as good as London Calling

i think the clash went on to do better things but this is still the clash

Great punk album, iconic

Great album, I had the US version so missed some fo the cuts here.

Classic.

What a sick album! Punk to its core. Love it. First time listening to The Clash properly, and you can definitely see where they have inspired heaps of newer bands.

Raw and yet polished. Very confident. Not quite London Calling but I enjoyed every track.

Immediately, The Clash set themselves apart from competitors with their melodic edge and musicianship, which would be even better realized down the line. A joy from start to finish.

Back to my kind of music. Though their debut isn't as varied as their classic album London Calling, they came out of the gate with some great punk music. Full of songs you can sing back after 1 or 2 listens, and songs like Police & Thieves do show a glimpse of what was to come later down the line. It's full of energy from start to finish, and I always feel tempted to start it all over again as soon as the album is done.

a classic, full of bangers

The only band that matters crashes onto the scene with their unique brand of melodic, socially conscious punk. Essential.
