Reviews (page 7 of 12)

This was fun. Very upbeat and enjoyable to listen to. Seeing this live was probably an amazing experience.

Fela is the man and influenced so much world music, yet most people don't realize it. Check out the music from when Ginger Baker traveled across the desert to find him and make music with him. Polyrhythms for days.

Right off the bat, this album cover makes me feel like I'm about to listen to people have a lot of fun jamming out for an hour. OH boy was I right; you should judge a book by its cover. Got some cool American Jazz fused with some African beats. Just some dudes jamming out big time. What's not to love?

Super cool jazzy sound with the African singer is a great combo. This would have been such an awesome thing to see live at the time

This shit is bangin! and by bangin I mean Ginger Baker is really bangin on them drums! Really love all the African jungle sounds. Funky.

I've never heard of Fela Kuti before, and I'm not terribly familiar with this type of music (is William Onyeabor considered similar? I've listened to one of his albums), but I enjoyed this album. The music was very different than what I typically listen to, but I thought the instrumentation was fantastic, and it was cool to hear Ginger Baker working outside of Cream. I wish I had something profound to mention here, but all I can say is that I enjoyed listening to this.

Definitely dug this!

Really dig afrobeat, and Kuti is afrobeat incarnate. Not a big fan of live albums typically, but this is the kind of music that almost needs to be listened to in that setting. Would gladly spin this if the mood ever arose.

I like this. Love the energy and the beats. Still feels fresh. 4/5

Not huge on jazz, but was a very pleasant listen.

Fantastic

I liked this album. Ginger Baker's drumming blended in pretty seamlessly with the rest of the percussion, and Fela's voice is just great. I liked all of the energy this has from being a live album, but it's till super tight performance wise.

I enjoyed this one. Pretty fun and bouncy. 3.5/5

Second album in a row that’s new to me, but I ended up loving. Really cool, eclectic jazz! B+

awesome music, great chill & funky vibe

Taattua odotetun kovaa laatua, ei tähän muuta tarvi sanoa.

Fela Kuti on legenda ja toimii livenäkin! 4/5

Was worth it for the 2 drummer, drum duo/solo on ye ye de smell.

-1 for the 16 minute drum solo. Behave!

Well, I thought this was a winner. I love a bit of jazz drumming, and these two pros did not disappoint. It didn't write make it to be a 5 star album because I couldn't imagine myself listening to the whole album over and over.

More like Fela Awesome-Kuti! 4.5

Some nice Afrobeat! I think I preferred Zombie but this is still good

Didn’t have Live! so I listened to a ton of tracks. It’s good. I like Jazz but it is hard to work and listen to Jazz when you have ADHD 😵‍💫

Very fun album to listen to. I'm always a fan of a heavy drum element and it's nice to hear music from a wider variety of places than just the US and UK.

I bought this vinyl at Ashwoods in the early 70’s for $1. I’d never heard of Fela Kuti but I was a big Cream fan so Ginger Baker’s name sealed the deal. About 20 years later I mentioned the fact that I had it to a punter at a record fair & he made me an offer for it that I couldn’t refuse. Big pity, because having listened to it this morning for the first time in 30 years, I’m reminded of what a wonderful live album it is. And it’s a lot more to do with Fela Kuti than it is to do with Ginger. The music is joyous, to say the least. Do yourself a favour & watch the doco Finding Fela (2015) - it’s on youtube. And this album is one of the great live discs.

This album has been on my want-list for quite a while. it's far more Fela than Ginger (probably to its strength). I love the funky intensity of this album; it's perfect for a sweaty night of dancing. Love it.

Enjoyed this. Again something I would have chosen myself.

— Track Ratings: 1) Let’s Start: Easily one of the best song openers I’ve heard in a while! I loved it very much. (4.8/5) 2) Black Man’s Cry: Very good. Not much to say about this one but it was good! (4.5/10) 3) Ye Ye De Smell: This was so freaking good. I know all I’m saying is the songs are good but TRULY…. Woah. (4.6/10) 4) Egbe Mi O (Carry Me): This is possibly the BEST song on the album for sure! Love it. (4.8/10) 5) Ginger Baker and Tony Allen Drum Solo: Amazing. This last minute had me with my mouth open. (4.5/10) Overall: This album proved to me how every Live album I’ve heard has not been bad at all. One thing about me, i love me a good live album. And maybe one day I will come across a bad live album but that’s not today!

Super lekker album, af en toe wat langdradig.

What to say about this? Dynamic, groovy, impassioned, sprawling ... all adds up to Afrobeat excellence (plus so much more).

Fela's a big fella, large even. This album goes way harder than it should. Probably one of the funkiest albums of all time and that's not an exaggeration - there's just something about Afrobeat/African jazz that makes me want to hit up some Johnny Bravo poses and smile for the camera. That's also probably why "Remain in Light" is the only Talking Heads album I can tolerate. Strong 4/5. Now I'm off to listen to "Zombie" again.

It can appear to be a bit of a vanity project but it ends up being some uptempo fun

Fantastic record, really enjoyed the vibe from the live recording. Amazing instrumentation throughout. Would never have come across this album without this project…

Zombie was the 8th album that I got from this project and I have touted Fela Kuti to anybody since that has expressed interest in anything similar to Afrobeat. Here at #257 I still enjoy the style a lot. I normally don't enjoy live albums, but this is recorded quite well and makes it worth listening to. It was a good album and I want to keep listening to more from Fela Kuti.

Great afrobeat album, 4.5 stars.

3 stars + .5 for the audience particapation part + .5 for the 15 minute dueling drum solos

A really fun album! 45 minutes of great beats, groovy instruments and in a later part a mix of modern drums with more of the same African sound. It's a nice and unique break in the sea of more standard western-like rock music. I don't think it will be my alltime favourite, or if this even has any repeatability value for me, but for this one listening session it made a good impression. It actually might be one of the best live albums there is!

I did not expect to want a Fela Kuti album on the day it showed up, but I was wrong. This live set with Ginger Baker is stellar.

Score: 80 Album art: 70 Music I didn't read the Wikipedia article but I'm not sure in what sense this is a live show. The recording is immaculate and when he asks the crowd to sing on the last song it sounds like they know what they are doing, so props for that. I think if an alien came to earth and requested to hear human music for the first time this would be a good option. Extremely pleasant and fun to listen to. Even with the song lengths they go by very fast. Every song is good

Fela always on point

Strong 4.

Afrobeats. Jamband-ish. 7/10

Great music! Wasn’t necessarily much like anything I normally listen to but I thought it was good. Had my foot tapping to the beat almost the whole time. Will be spending more time listening to this genre.

Bouncy

Pretty exciting at times. Drum solo is a bit random but neat as we don't hear those much anymore but in theme with the rest of the album/performance, it's less exciting. It feels a bit... indulgent. This is someone who loves the Grateful Dead too...

Very good

Fela Kuti has quickly become one of my favorite artists I've discovered in this exercise. Once again, strong, swinging jazz from his group. Very strong Mingus vibes. Favorite track: Black Man's Cry

Big up this fella Fela

great example of soul singing big band black blues music loved it use as inspo for my future fusion projetcs

In your face funk

Gute polyrhythmische vibes

I like

Fela kuti goat

This is really energetic. I like it!

already liked Fela Kuti, now I like him more

I enjoyed it!

- Heard of Fela Kuti before but never actually listened to any of his music - Another album which is the exact kind of thing I want from this list, something from a genre I wouldn't have listened to that's really good - Will definitely listen to more of his music - Fav songs: Ye Ye De Smell, Let's Start

Great vibe, super funky and really intense.

Es la primera vez que lo escucho y sin duda investigaré más, la interpretación de Fela Kuti y su banda transmite acertadamente lo que quiere decir, la grabación desprende mucha presencia y carisma

Exceptional rhythm driven jazz rock. Filled with polyrhythms where the bass line provides the stable foundation, and the licks come from horns and multiple percussionists ride on top. Happy to have discovered this!

Love Fela. Has a proper vibe about it. Good to see it translate well going to see it live. Sounds great. Love that its 5 tracks long too. Ginger Baker AND Tony Allen Drum solo?! Sot Let’s start Ye Ye De Smell Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) Ginger Baker and Tony Allen Drum Solo 4/5

Definitely good grooves and breakbeats. Recognized a few samples that I've heard previously on hip-hop songs.

this is a VIBE - lots of good ass jams, SOME GOOD INSTRUMENTATION AND SOME TASTY BASS LICKS, it can get a bit repeatable but its a good jam to listen to when doing other things

Funky, fresh, great command of the audience. Great features drummer Sounds like a fun time. 3.5

funky album, a lot of fun to listen to!

Pretty good!

Like it! Nice mood.

Thought I'd start listening to some new music through this site rather than the same old albums and genres. My plan for 2023 and beyond is to listen to 1 of these albums a day until complete. I loved Cream and Blind Faith but never really looked any further into Ginger Baker's output. This album is a great listen but as I was working it was turned down quite low - time to listen to it again cranked up a bit. I've not listened to this genre before but when it finished Spotify played some similar music and I think I might explore it bit more widely.

The first and third track were great and that intro was fire but I was just not down with the funk

Vrolijke aanstekelijke jazzy feestmuziek. Ik twijfel tussen 3 of 4 sterren, maar omdat ik positief verrast ben, rond ik het af naar boven.

So much diversity, liked it

Surprisingly good

great combo

This is proof that great music transcends languages and cultures. I didn't understand much of what Fela Kuti was singing about, but I could feel the passion and the sheer joy that went into playing his music. It made the songs all the more fun to listen to - and they're already good to start with. Makes you think about what other amazing music is out there, that we're just not adequately exposed to.

Do padrão fela, baita som

We're the songs really long? Yes. Was this one of the most fun jazz albums I've ever heard. Also yes. Really impressive instrumentation showcasing African influence. Thumbs up

Wonderful album. I love hearing the afrobeat polyrhythms alongside those perfectly arranged horns. One of the greatest live albums.

I really enjoyed this album, but parts of some if the tracks dipped in quality and engagement more than others. Overall great fun, but only a 4/5

"Live" is the right word for this, cause it's also lively and exuberant. Nothing short of a joy to hear.

This was interesting and set me down a path of afrobeat and funk for the day.

Nobody's listening to this because of Ginger Baker.

Great Jazz album.

Alot of fun, knocked a star off for the long drum solo's

4.1 - You always know what you're going to get with Fela and it's always good. He's the party MC with a message and he brings the funky beats and extended instrumental jams.

Pretty good, love Afrofunk and Fela is the king of it

Goeie jams

I enjoyed the first two songs over the second two. Pretty fun listen with lots of energy. 7/10

Love African music.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Let’s start, Egbe mi o

Super funky, super groovy. Did not need the 15 minute drum solo at the end, tho.

funkers

This is just awesome, incredible rhythms and melodies, an amazing sound and beautifully cohesive. I could listen to Let's Start on repeat.

This was fun. I liked my previous experience with Fela and this was no exception. I did not need the drum solo track. There's a certain kind of person who would enjoy that kind of thing and they can go right ahead and eat that up. I will pass.

interesting. een beetje uitheems wel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jbzdl9isW0

Man, that's just a lot of fun. Hard to find much to fault with this one. It's energetic, skillful, and timeless. Sure, there's a bit of an overabundance of hand drums but that's the genre, you know? Super fun.

Lekker drummen ja toch

A rollicking good time!

Never heard of Fela Kuti before but I know of Ginger Baker from Cream. This album is much like Jazz but somewhat different. It starts very strong with the song "Let's start" and sticks with it through the album. This is probably something I would pick up at the record store if I see it.

Great sounds throughout. Ginger Baker is a great drummer.

As another reviewer suggested. Just the kind of thing you would hope to discover on a list like this. Cover art 1/5

It's a treat. Very interesting to listening to it.

Really enjoyed that you could feel the energy of the live performance. All around great, naturally the drumming was a stand out here with lots of cool rhythms

Viagem percussiva impressionante.

Enjoyed more than I expected! Really easy to listen too and very soulful and touching

08/22/2022 Okay, I really loved this album. There were multiple times that I had to remind myself that it’s a LIVE recording. Fela Kuti is a legend and ginger baker really fucking shines on these recordings. This album is like that meme from a few years ago: “when you’re riding different waves but still building.” I want to listen to more of his albums now. — I started grad school today!!! Can’t believe I can’t officially say that I’m a graduate student, an architecture student!!! Today was so so long, I’m nervous about time management and how I’ll navigate classes, meals, my dog, and my own health. I’m trying to keep the faith, and also get some good sleep in too. Tiffany brought us these amazing pineapple cakes from Taiwan that were unlike anything I had had before. I need to buy a whole box. Until tomorrow….

I dug this and hadn't heard it before, so that's cool. I don't know that this is my favorite Fela album ever. Also, I'm not sure how much Ginger brought to the table, but hey, if it got more people to listen to Fela, then right on. Anyway, the dude's band it tight and any Fela is good Fela, so, thumbs up.

Had never heard of it. But loved the beats.

awesome rhythms

Truly outstanding!

what an important, interesting addition to this project! the pioneer of afrobeat definitely deserves his spot on this list. a previous album on this list that i hard was by fema kuti, fela kuti's son who performed covers of his father's songs. there is something about the live presence on this album! with the afrobeat (a genre i'm uneducated about and like just okay) sound and the humor, there's some magic that fela kuti creates. the jazz influence! this album is made up of music through which you *feel* primarily. and the inclusion of ginger baker, cream's drummer, on a few tracks is, in a word, cool.

KEEP IT UNREAL. very much the basis of any of mr scruffs club nights. very enjoyable.

This one surprised me. I liked it a whole lot more than I expected to. Pretty good stuff!

some of the most groovy music i've ever heard. lots of fun. if you're a drummer like me you will absolutely fanboy over the amazing moments from tony allen and ginger baker on this record. great tunes

Wow feel that rhythm.

Skip the sixteen-minute drum solo bonus track and save your sanity and your eardrums. It was never on the original version of the album, and while it’s probably interesting to some, it’s unnecessary for most. The rest of the album however is pure bliss.

“Let’s Start” has says! Well, that was certainly a start. I would love to have seen Fela’s band back in the 70s (with or without Ginger Baker). These concerts feel like they would’ve been one hell of a party if the recordings come anywhere near to what the actual live experience was. I’m sure that I mentioned this before, but you can hear the influence of the Talking Heads’ sound here, especially on albums like Remain in Light and the ones that came after. This album also showed me just how good Ginger Baker was. The drumming on “Yeye De Smell” is out of this world. A very solid 4 for Fela.

i dig it

Thoroughly enjoyable, funky, hypnotic. Well worth repeated playing. The drum solo at the end probably prevented this being a 5 star review!

not something I would have found on my own, but really dig this! Great pace and awesome drumming

Pretty Crazy drumming on this one. Songs are amazing and complex, but my adhd is struggling with song length. I bet if i was stoned i could really lose track of time to these tracks. Pretty solid album though. High point: Ye Ye De Smell Low Point: Egbe Mi O (carry me)

What this generator is all about, an album one would not normally find. A very good live jazz album that is all of five songs that runs a little over an hour. Percussion heavy album that is capped off with a sixteen minute dual drum solo. If you want to learn more about the crazy-ass Ginger Baker, check out the documentary "Beware of Mr. Baker."

Mega pangare….

Live? Swag

7/10 very entertaining!

One of the ones on this list that I would never otherwise seek out but really enjoyed. I don't get into the jazz waters much but boy are they pleasant sometimes

super album live. Vraiment c'Est une découverte, ca jam pas mal et c'est très explosif. 4.5

This is a great album! All new to me and some really sweet music happening here, no doubt. Caught my ear from the start and kept it going all the way through. Complex harmonies, funk-jazz-groove style, and ear-catching melodies, all with some tuly intricate beats. Really dug it.

Great afrofunk

Hypnotic, mesmerising, chaotic. Brilliant.

Fun and a stunning live performance

Super album, heerlijke jazzie en samen met 1 van de beste drummers ooit

Genre: Afrobeat 4/5 In one of the best live albums I've listened to in quite some time, from an artist (Fela Kuti) I was unfamiliar with, featuring a drummer (Ginger Baker) who I'm rather familiar with, Fela Kuti's Live! is a recording that perfectly encapsulates the concept of Afrobeat. Born from African rhythms and jazz-funk, Afrobeat, essentially founded by Fela Kuti, is a genre rife with driving rhythms and neat, technical instrumentation. It comes together in a truly beautiful way, and all of the tracks here do something to excite you and challenge you. Ginger Baker, who shows up for the 2nd half of the album, delivers a muted, respectable, appropriate performance throughout, never becoming the highlight of the show, helping to make the feature feel genuine, and never gimmicky. My personal favorite, Ye Ye De Smell, the track which introduces our good friend Ginger, does a great job of showing us exactly who he is. Once the full band drops out, Ginger and Africa '70 drummer Tony Allen let loose, unleashing a tremendous duo drum solo that fits perfectly in the middle of the fine performance. Black Man's Cry features a cathartic vocal performance from Fela Kuti, and only goes to highlight how little some things have changed. Overall, Kuti serves as a miraculous bandleader, keeping tone and tempo consistent on his Hammond organ, and utilizing his players to the best of their abilities. Great sax solos throughout, smart and constantly altering arrangements as the songs play along, and a real passion and energy felt through the entire show. Solid, rewarding listen.

So much fun to listen to.

Encore un grand merci à Emmanuel Macron pour cet album.

Not my usual fare but very enjoyable.

I am enjoying the music so far. Normally I don't like live recordings but the quality is superb. It's refreshing listening to music that I wouldn't normally be exposed to.

Liked this one. Songs were really long but it worked well as background music while I was working. Would listen again and to more by Fela Kuti! 4/5

love this type of music

Excellent, will definitely be listening again.

Fela Kuti and Ginger Baker were both on the cusp of something when they paired up for this seismic album back in 1971. One of the many shining gems in a discography full of them, Fela and his Africa 70 showcases the euphoric yet political pull of Afrobeat with Ginger more than holding his own. If only we knew then what would come next.... Favorites: Let's Start, Black Man's Cry, Ye Ye De Smell.

This album was full of energy. The arrangement was great and the fusion of African and western music was seamless and done in such a way that highlights the African influence in western popular music. Ginger Baker was a great addition to this as well.

Languid compositions replete with Fela's urgency. I think I would have liked more, but am not sure if an album could handle more songs or if said songs would survive compression.

first listen such a vibe, love hearing the various African influences on jazz culture and i wish i was alive in the 70s

Disseste que os nossos corpos florirão em lágrimas com a certeza de quem nunca regou uma planta na vida.

African jazz album, played live. I like the song intros from Fela ahead of the songs, simple introducing the title and briefly the meaning. Ginger Baker joins for the B-side, after touring Africa to learn about African drumming styles with Fela prior to this recording. Fun album, the songs are lengthy and overall it feels like a long jam session.

A little slow for my taste

Not my usual tastes, but I actually liked it a lot

I like Fela Kuti--the songs kind of all sound the same, but they're pretty fun, good vibes, so pretty happy to have this going in the background. And Egbe Mi O rocks. I'm writing less today because I wrote a whole bunch for yesterday's album and it didn't seem to save, so I'm mad

Funky. Jazzy. Seems like there’s a lot of this Kuti fella on here but this is a good one, someone should probably sample those drums.

Ritmos africanos. Está bien.

Not a huge fan of live albums in general, but this one feels special.

Great vibes

This is cool. Political black music that is unapologetic. I've heard of Fela Kuti but this was my first listen. I doubt I'd go back for more, but it was great to hear the artistry.

Combinación muy agradable. Muy buenas percusiones.

Very good

The intro "Let's Start" has a really cool riff playing call-and-response with the horns, along with enjoyable solos and Fela Kuti interjects energy with his eccentric vocals. I really like Ginger Baker's eclectic drums and the organ solo on "Black Man's Cry". The shuffling poly-rhythm on "Ye Ye De Smell" gives the track a unique energy. "Egbe Mi O" carries a more subdued vibe than the other tracks, with the same Afrobeat qualities creating a captivating listen. I'm especially fond of the crowd-vocal-led outro. This album is a great listen, and I'm grateful for it being my introduction to the legend Fela Kuti.

This is one of those live albums where you forget it's live until there's talking between songs, and you're like "oh, right!". That's one of the indicators of a great live recording, for me. I was surprised to get another Fela Kuti album after just listening last week, but I'm not mad about it. This was a good listen. Maybe not one I'll play over and over, but it would be good to vibe to while cleaning/cooking.

Fela rules. Interesting collab, would be curious to see the movie about Ginger Baker doing this.

Very enjoyable listen with the extravagant brass and percussion playing here. Not normally a fan of drum solos but the Ginger Baker and Tony Allen one was fantastic. Fela Kuti has a great voice, only lost interest near the end of two of the songs. This would be much better if experienced in real life, could imagine having a ball to this.

Funky as hell!

Really an amazing live performance and recording. Loved the crowd interactions and involvement.

Amazing drumming on Ye Ye Smell!

Afrobeat

Fun actually

Incredible album. Holy shit, this was mind-blowing. The precision The passion. The endurance. I'm going to go listen to his whole catalogue.

I've not listened to enough Fela Kuti or Afro Beat. I've heard 100s of bands who are influenced by him and sampled him. I first heard of him through the Beastie Boys Grand Royal magazine when they did a piece on his life and work. I loved the energy and the grooves on this album and the Ginger Baker/Tony Allen drum off is such a bonus.

Stunningly good album. I mean geez, what can you even say about Fela and Ginger Baker? Two Olympian talents here, backed by the most incredible musicians. The sound is jazzy, groovy and funky. They make it seem so effortless. Fave Songs: Black Man's Cry, Ye Ye De Smell, Let's Start

Ginger Baker is a monster of a drummer and he really gets to flex both his fills and his pocket presence on this record. Admittedly, this record didn't have my full attention, but it's got just enough jazzy funk to draw me back in quite frequently. Favorite track: "Black Man's Cry"

I really enjoyed this one. Upbeat and groovin

doot doot, like the jazz

Not sure Tony Allen needed anyone to drum along, but still a joyous experience.

I had no expectations going into this except that I'm usually not a live album guy. What great music! Groovy, energetic, and backed by fantastic drumming by Ginger Baker.

7/10. Pretty good. Maybe worth an 8?

Very fun, would listen to again. 8/10

Algjör veisla.

My second Fela Kuti album, with more awesome afrobeat. The funk is infectious, the grooves are killer, and Ginger Baker kills it on the drums. Baker is like half the reason that this rocks so hard, and Kuti is the other half. You really can't go wrong with the insanely great music here.

Super bon jazz entrainant !

This was great. A lot of fun. But it all starts blending together after a while ya know? No standouts.

Just a really well done example of a pretty cool style of music. Lots of energy. Would have been fun to see this in person. Really enjoyed this album.

Great listen, did some gardening to this music. I'm not the largest fan of the spoken word sections included at the start of many of the tracks, but the musical sections are a fantastic addition to any social event.

AFROBEAT 100%

This must have been SO much fun to see live!

8/10 Belo disco, presença de palco incrível, som limpo.

Wie das grooved, und dann noch mit dem endlosen Tony-Allen-Solo hinten dran. Beim Autofahren gehört: bester Stuff!

Amazing album, so much energy! I would however turn it off before the last track, because the drum solo goes on forever.

I really enjoyed this. Not annoying despite being a live album. Admittedly, the drum solo does go on too long, although I imagine I would have enjoyed it had I been there live!

Ritmische muziek. Moeite om hier stil op te blijven zitten. Er was altijd wel een hand of voet die aan het mee bewegen was

Each of the four tunes hangs around a bit too long without enough changes. It probably works better if experienced as the live jam session in a club that it is. Or as background music, but not as focused listening experience on an early morning.

No idea what this is but it bangs.

Always enjoy Fela Kuti

Fantastic little slice of afro jazz and even features a nice drum solo from Ginger Baker!

Incredible musical ability on display, especially for fans of Ginger Baker.

Pretty good live performance with a jamming feel. Enjoyed most of the album. Its in the Good to Excellent range.

I like the combination of horns and what doesn’t sound like a typical drum kit. I guess it would be considered jazz. I’m not really sure but I like it. Mostly instrumental is where it’s at.

Great blend of reggae, funk, world music! Very engaging and fun.

Good shit. Unique. Excellent instrumentalists. Great jams.

This would have been so insanely fun to see performed live. As always, Ginger Baker on the drums does not disappoint.

Very fun 3.5?

I had heard the name before, but never really listened (like really listened) and I dig this shit. 70's funk/jazz meets afro beats makes for a damn good time. I'll definitely be seeking out more of this in the future.

I did not know how much I needed this music. Great jazz

Groovin’ as fuck!

Very good. Thicc grooves.

Finde ich ganz nice, macht echt Spaß Aber die Lieder sind sehr lang und variieren sehr stark während des Liedes, manchmal würde ich gerne nur Teile des Liedes hören

4 stars, great show

Música intensa y poderosa

Just a good album to jam to. They throw down some good grooves and the solos are great. Fav song Let's Start

Really unique, funky, souly. Genre called Afrobeat. Proper feel good, real good energy, could listen to it all day. Gotta be a 4 just cos it's out there and it's mint 🤙

Great great great, keeping on spotify.

helt bra, tillägd till gillade låtar

Very Energetic

Great pick! We love Ginger Baker!

i never knew this existed. really cool

Like Raggae, enjoyed it

Awesome Afrobeat album!

Hurjaa tykitystä! Ihan kuin olisi yhtäkkiä hypännyt keskelle Nairobin yöelämää! Lopun pitkät rumpusoolot vähän laskee kokonaisarvosanaa.

Enjoyable background listening. Could have lived without the 16 minute drum solo.

Loved it. I knew Ginger Baker from Cream and his documentary but never listened to Fela Kuti before.

Swinging!

Great ball of sound. I wish id had been in such amazong show!

This thing freaking grooves, though I’m not sure I need an entire 15 minutes of drumming solos, I’d be happy with a cool 12.5

No es ninguna obra maestra pero vale mucho la pena. 3.9

There were parts of this album I liked quite a lot and other parts that I found kind of loud and annoying.

Not as classic as the mid- 70s run of Fela Kuti albums, but tasty nonetheless.

Me latió un buen.

Cool beats and long jams, good background music!

That was fun!

Great! Way better than I thought

Heady jamz!

Great live album. Drums are phenomenal never a dull moment.

Great live jazz album, high energy.

Hot as hell, Ginger Baker may surpass Keith Moon as my favorite drummer. 3.5/4

Sweet jams. Best track: Let's Start

I’m all for the world music we’ve been getting. Ginger baker might be the best drummer of all time

Сраный лайв минус вайб Какой-то негр 10 минут джемит и угарает пока ему подыгрывает Бекер, ну хз 2,5

Jazzy, good listen, but nothing with listening to another time

All this shit is good

Blended a lot, but it was fun and groovy the whole way through. Standout is probably the second to last track as it included the audience which was cute

I'd rather make jokes about the album than listen to it.

Monumental(?)

A nice suprise, I had no idea what to expect and it became the perfect background track for my morning. I like that it’s a live album it really felt like I was there watching them perform

Listening to the first few seconds of the first song I was thinking, fuck yeah, why don't listen to more Afro beat?! But that quickly wore off and I remembered it just doesn't jive with me. I don't really know why. I've been exposed to it a lot by touring in a funk band and my band mates playing it in the van. It has all the elements I like, it's funky, it's got horns, lots of percussion, great guitar riffs but for whatever reason it just doesn't grab me. Also, what are we doing putting a 16 min drum solo on an album?

This album grabs you by the throat and does not let go until it's done with you! The call and response ending was spirit moving. The rhythms former Cream drummer, wow! I don't think I'll listen to this one again, but it was a force!

Good, but despite being excellent drumming the final drum solo went on way too long for me.

This album doesn't convince me that live albums are good.

mn recensies zijn wat saai de laatste tijd, beetje met weinig aandacht aan het luisteren, maar lekker !

Fun, energetic, jazzy.

My dislike for jazz is well documented at this point, but this album caught me by surprise. Still not my favorite, but I thought the fusion of jazz with funk and other genres made it an overall better experience

Great opening track

Really cool record, had heard a few Fela Kuti tracks before but live they are impeccable

Nice African beats which I quickly got fed up with. Good musicianship but not a go to album for me.

didnt finish it but so far the album was very lovely and authentic!

Afrobeat, Ginger exploring africa

I feel pretty much the same as I did with the last Fela Kuti album we had on the list. The only part I really didn't like is that this was recorded live in a studio! The only real "live" song is a 16 minute bonus track, which is the fantastic drum duel with Ginger Baker.

Very good but too long

Great album. First time listening to Fela.

Very energetic, but not that much substance.

felt like a mix of preaching and music, not so much singing. It's not a bad thing though, it has character. "Underground spiritual" rhythms from the 70's - fun stuff. The African bits of the music make it even more so charming, it's been great to learn more about Yoruba music and Afrobeat through this album! Not quite a 4 for me tho, I'd say 3.5, leaning more towards 3

6/10 The kind of music I was hoping to listen to when I started this project. Early 70s African drum fusion (with the drummer of Cream, as well as various guitars, pianos, and what might be synths or their predecessor), it's a nice diversion from the endless new-wave and psychedelic rock bands that make up this list. That being said, I don't think I'd willingly listen to this album of my own volition. I do appreciate what they're trying to do, and I think it's great atmospheric music, but it's just not for me.

Vibey.

It feels…. almost incorrect to give this a 3 because it is Fela Kuti AND Ginger Baker BUT: this is a live album, and a very meandering one. This would have been 5 stars in the room, only 3 recorded.

Listened Before? N In the immortal words of the Beasties... Oh my god, thats the funky shit! This was funky and wild and I dug everything about it except the length of the songs. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Let's Start

Fun! I love hearing live music and people being passionate!

Some amazing musicianship and a good album overall There were points that it faded into the background, but it was good

Lovely bit of afrobeat and the drum battle is amazing. Think there will be better Fela Kuti to come though

Undoubtedly would have been 6/5 live, but listening this at home doesn't quite reach the same heights. Irresistible grooving and good stuff anyway!

Solid Fav track: Ye Ye De Smell

Some cool grooves but they tended to go on too long and became repetitive to the point that everything started sounding the same. I enjoyed the experience of hearing this but I doubt I'd ever come back to it.

I love Fela but this isn't his best recording and I'm not a big fan of what Baker brings to it.

Groovy

parece um rock clássico ou blues... Sinto que não vou curtir muito mas vou ver UHUUl musica africana amo lacrou divo pioneiro do afrobeat

Oh hell yes! This is a spicy morsel after UB40's white bread and milky lukewarm tea.

Not my cup of tea but good performer

Nigerialainen Fela Kuti ja Cream-yhtyeen rumpalinakin tunnettu Ginger Baker yhdistävät voimansa ja tuloksena syntyi melko vauhdikasta musisointia.

Album 42/1001. Listened 6/22/2026. It has some really catchy killer beats and melodies. Not really my favorite genre, but I could listen to it again.

Fela Kuti, the creator of Afrobeat and a man of difficult circumstances, is just beginning his experiments on this record; the music here sounds more jazzy and funky and less authentic. This is unsurprising, as the album was recorded, firstly, in London, secondly, at Abbey Road Studios (its title is misleading; although it was recorded live, it was still a studio work), and thirdly, with the participation of one of the most masterful English drummers of the era, Ginger Baker of Cream. Baker had been obsessed with African music for several years by then (which makes sense, considering that it's 90% percussion), so he felt right at home here. Four lengthy jams, mixing everything at hand: Afro drums, organ, trumpet solo. It's thrown together on the fly, but weaves together very organically. A nice album for a Saturday morning!

Pretty cool, but not anything I would necessarily return to.

It's kind of cool, it's also not quite my thing. 3.

Pre Listen: Another group I haven't heard of, not even in passing. I can't tell what genre this might even be based on the album cover. Going in completely blind. Notable Tracks: N/A - I'm putting N/A as the whole album is a live recording of what's essentially a jam/jazz session. Songs mesh and flow from one to the next, with only 5 breaks or so. If I had to choose a "favorite" part, Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) was pretty nice. I like the melody he had everyone singing. It was nice. "Black Man's Cry" was my least favorite, it felt a bit tacky...? I don't really know how to describe it. Post Listen: Certainly the most free-form album I've been given to on here to date. I feel somewhat conflicted about how to even go about rating it. It's music, but it's unlike anything I've heard on here yet, seeing as how it was a live recording of free-form Afro-Jazz and rhythm. It's like judging free-form expressionist dance at an olympic sporting event, where does one even start? The beats, guitar, keyboard, occasional brass were all well played, consistently. I felt like the vocals fit well sometimes, but felt as though they were out of place othertimes. I appreciate the artists and feel more cultured after listening to this, but I don't see myself coming back, nor adding anything to my playlist. 3/5.

A live album you say? 👀 This was solid. Vocal works was good but relatively brief. I was immensely impressed by the drum work which particularly shined in the final track. All the more impressive that this was a live album. Very very high 3.

To be honest it blurred together quite a bit. Most of the tracks were rather repetitive - which isn’t to say they’re bad. I liked the beats and it sounded cool but nothing really stood out in particular so it isn’t really grabbing me to want to put it in my rotation.

Not an album I’d usually listen to, but in the car with the windows down it’s great.

What a fun concert recording, wrapped up with an epic drum solo!

Cool vibes, but not discernably great to me? IDK

This is really a great groove album, but I'm not sure how essential it is.

Lively but not sure I fully embraced this one.

Enjoyable

I've never listened to afro beats before, but this was pretty groovy and catchy. Fela Kuti was quite engaging with the audience, as well. It was easy to get lost in the beats and bouts of repetition. The drum solo at the end was pretty fun, too.

Good set of Afro-beat but could do without the drum solo, personally. 3

It's kind of a basic Fela Kuti album. As such, it's really great. The energy, the power, the brass goes crazy. I really love Fela's keyboards here (I usually love then) The inclusion of Ginger Baker for most of the album adds depth to the percussion, but not in an extremely crucial way... Tony Allen is such a beast of a player himself. I think I'll give it a high three and I guess I'll go back to it at some point (although It's not my favorite Fela album) This musician was a blessing to us all.

buenisimo
