Reviews (page 8 of 12)
Aye decent
I was really getting into this near the end, felt the groove in my bones 3.5
this guy again! definitely wasn't as awesome as Zombie, and I wasn't jamming as hard, but it was still solid stuff
Good, but didn't hit as hard compared to Zombie.
the kind of shit i would pay real american dollars to play live in a garage with some friends. can you imagine the vibes
not doing it for me like the last one we got. I do think it's cool that Ginger Baker was so far ahead of the curve on this that he collabed with Fela in 1971, though. Clapton would never, for obvious reasons.
Fine I suppose. Good working tunes :)
I liked this, but didn't love it. I thought it was pretty cool and entertaining the whole way through. For whatever reason, I found Kuti's other album from here (Zombie) better than this one. Still, this was a solidly good listen. Overall: 3.25/5
Honestly this album smokes. I don't have much to say except it's quite badass.
Funk yea. It long tho so eh
I like a good extended jam sesh. Clearly some cool shit, much of it foreign to my ears.
Interesting
African hiphopsample
Very funky and some very talented musicians involved. The fact it was a Live album wasn't particularly noticeable beyond the first 10 seconds, so that was a plus too. Enjoyed the music but I think the riffs were a bit too repetitive, not sure I'd give this album another listen but definitely convinced that Fela Kuti was a great artist. High 3.
This is quite down to earth jazz. It didn't sound like a panic attack in music form while still having some non standard rhythms. Enjoyable but I think the songs were too long with not enough substance High 3
nice
Afrobeat. It's a reasonably enjoyable live album. Fela comes across as personable in his song introductions, although with the low track count there's not a lot of that.
This was a fun listen! A good one to jam to in the background while I work.
it was ok, the songs were a bit too long but i did not have the feeling to throw my computer away and that's a good thing
Live! and sounding good. It promised Ginger Baker but only has him on two tracks, granted, the bonus track is quite long. It feels strange to be disappointed 50 years late. It was good, but not mind blowing.
3.5 stars. Fun Afrobeat with some killer drumming by Ginger Baker
Horrible -long -Répétitif
Not for me
Solid and energetic
I love long tracks and live albums, but this was just alright.
Solid grooves here.
Tough to get through in full. Decent parts just listened at not the right time
Good but LONG!
Today I learned that the legendary Tony Allen was THE drummer for Fela Kuti, the band leader even. I'm sure most people find out about Fela before Tony, or both together, but it's cool to know I've been hearing that legend long before I realized it. Awesome music, I think I'd choose a different Fela Kuti album though.
These songs are LONG but fun jams. (Fela seems to have a very impressive but complex history…)
This would be a really fun album to cook to! I was jammin, but it was loooong
Fun and funky with a slight tendency to blend into the background
not really my style, demasiado caos
Groovy, just kinda wished the groove went more places
Funky and enjoyable. Also I liked how this guy decided to divorce his 27 wives because he thought marriage brings jealousy lol, maybe fewer wives next time pal
Cool record, lots of deep grooves, need to be in the right mood to really enjoy something like this.
Would love to be as enthusiastic about something as Fela is about introducing Ginger Baker. Last track drags it down but otherwise love the energy.
Decent. Funky and jazzy. But it's more of an art record than something to consume a billion times over, which I respect, but it's not really my style. My brain isn't wired to intentionally listen to a 12 minute track. Yeah, it's a vibe (I bopped all the way through), but I've heard similar jazzy-artsy records that gripped me much more than this one.
I'm not sure I'd ever make this part of my rotation, and it does feel quite self-indulgent at times. But it's interesting and has a distinct, powerful and insistent personality.
Ginger Baker was at the peak of his powers in Cream, specifically on the album Disraeli Gears, not the 15+ min drum solo on this album. I did enjoy some of it though......
Quite an enjoyable album, but the last 16 minute drum track was completely unnecessary!
Good fun this, the drum solo at the end goes crazy hard
Groovy
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? 🤔 Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
Clearly they were having a great time and I tried to join in but it wasn't really my bag.
Uhhh. I'm sure this guy was having a great time but I found I wasn't necessarily participating....
Honestly the more I get albums by African artists the more I get into them. This was quite interesting.
Ginger is an amazing drummer. Great jams and cool rhythms.
The whole album wasn't available, but the songs I could hear were interesting.
Me gustó bastante la percusión.
good but too much sound
6.9/10
I do like Fela Kuti
I don't like live albums, because they ae optimized for the present crowd, not the people listening at home. The songs drag way too long, the focus on improvisational performance is too strong, and the mix is rough and difficult to listen to the whole album in one sitting. However, the music is decent, i generally don't like afrobeat but this album is making me rethink my position.
You know a live album is good when I'm upset I wasn't there live to witness it.
Good African Jazz
This was fun to listen to. Black Man’s Cry and Ye Ye Da Smell were my favorite tracks.
Cool live African album. It was a lot of fun - to a point. However, it would have been a lot more fun to be at the show than listening to the album was. There are only 5 tracks on this 60 minute album, so every some is long and repetitive. And I could have done without the last track which was a 12-minute drum solo. Regardless, I give it a 3 for some fun jam music.
It was ok. Enjoyed the musicianship. 2.5/5.
3/5
Cool, but too much jam band energy
Good jazz.
Cool album, cool gig
Kinda funky but not interesting at all.
A fun listen. Stirring. The length of the songs knocks them out of contention of regular rotation. Even as a drummer I don't think I need to regularly listen to a 16:00 Ginger Baker drum solo.
Classic Afrobeat from when Afrobeat was just being defined. Great performances, great rhythms, although the songs can get a bit long and repetitive at times.
I have not listened to much Afrobeat, but there is one song (Afrobeat but not involving Kuti) I heard on an old NBA2K game that I am somewhat obsessed with, so I should probably check out more. I liked this.
High energy, fun. Not boring but not for me.
My Last.fm statistics say that I've previously heard only a couple of Fela Kuti's songs so it's about time to listen to a whole album. I don't like live albums but in this case the feeling and the groove get the job done. A 16 minute drum solo was a bit too much
Let's Start
I'm generally not a fan of recorded live music, but this was enjoyable.
Not bad, a fun listen
el drum solo GOD
Fela's bands are always amazing, but this choice strikes me as weak: Zombie, Expensive Shit, He Miss Road and others are better. I worry this one is on this list just because Ginger Baker showed up. And I mean, the Ginger jam drum solo track is the weakest on the record.
Got all three of the Kuti family albums within the first 100 days. Crazy stuff. Anyways this was pretty good, just like the other two were, better than britpop any day of the week
3/5
While this is not my preferred genre, I appreciate listening to something different (that's NOT British pop-rock). Minus one star for the 16+ minute drum solo. It was quite a piece of art, but ultimately went on too long.
Great energy
The improv is sick on this! Favourite track: Let's Start
Interesting and fun music for the most part but songs seemed to last forever.
fun and funky! great cooking dinner music. could do without the extended drum solo that played as my alarm next morning though.
this is cool and all, i just don't really vibe with live albums
Raspikurkkujen aatelia. Livelevyksi aivan studiolevy kuuloinen ilman spiikkejä.
I like it even though i didn’t fully listen. It’s funny cuz this was my topic in the TED talk
This was a hard listen. If you like jazz, I think you’ll get away with this. Just. It’s nothing spectacular and I would question that it’s in the top 1000 albums when I think of the albums in the same kind of vein as this. But still not overly bad. I would say, persevere with it and it might just surprise you.
That's the kind of energy I want to hear in live performances. You can clearly hear they are having so much fun.
Not my thing but it has grown on me with repeated listens. Each track has aspects that I like but that is not enough for each 15 minute epic to be worth regular revisiting.
Grooves like a braille bible
16 minute drum solo? Yeah it's live so I get it. Such high energy for the songs which kept it fun. I enjoyed the album more than I thought I would.
I'll never get used to albums with five long meandering tracks, It's just not how my brain works. It's a certainly got a rhythm though
Before: This looks fun. I'm anticipating some sort of raucous African reggae-esque beats. Let's see. I think maybe I have something from Fela Kuti on one my favorites by years lists. Nope, it's some other African dude, but I cannot recall his name off hand but I would not be surprised to see him pop up as my album of the day some morning. During: Let's Start, literally. Oh, it's an African James Brown. I do love James Brown's music, is my initial thought upon the beginning of this track which then devolves into some jazzy stuff that I'm not much of a fan of. 13 minutes in now, this way too jazzy for my tastes. I'm leaning towards a 3 at this point. Ye Ye De Smell is great. I kept thinking of some of the stuff the Beastie Boys were doing while listening to this album. I wonder if they were influenced by this artist? After : Overall, it was an enjoyable listen but not one I'll be repeating anytime soon. I would regard it as a high 3.
Can't help but jive.
Quite enjoyed listening to this, although more as background music as the tracks are incredibly long, although I liked how rhythmic it was and the energy, particularly the 3rd track, Carry Me. The last track really shouldn't be here though, and I would be more inclined to listen again if the songs were a little shorter and to the point.
Not a bday album, just not really my thing.
This has a great beat and Fela’s voice is powerful, but I lost interest halfway through most tracks. I enjoyed the tracks Ginger Baker played on, especially “Ye Ye De Smell.” The bonus track with the 16-minute drum battle between Baker and Tony Allen was a rough listen.
When the language they are speaking is not your native tongue, you have to depend on the music. Luckily, the music is fantastic, although they tend to be a bit long. I understand that is the point in this style of music but it makes less digestible to people not used to this style of music. The drumming is utterly fantastic & the reason to listen to this. Live 16 minute drum duet!? What's not to love? 3
A bit long, but otherwise not terrible.
Litt kult, men kjedelig.
Bom album, arranjos fodas e musicalidade sólida. 7/10
Interesting
Where?!
Fun album.
Good vibes. Great drumming, too. Not really something I'd relisten though. Faves: Let's Start, Egbe Mi O (Carry Me)
As far as live albums go this one’s a keeper
A collaboration between an Afrobeat legend and one of the greatest drummers of all time sounds like a match made in heaven. In reality, it's simply okay. Fela Kuti's in fine form with his vocal and percussion performances, and Ginger Baker's virtuosic drumming goes without saying; he's considered an all-time great of the instrument for a reason. But apart from that brief description, there's not much else to really say about 'Live!'. It's a decent live album with jazz-infused Afrobeat jams. There's no real lyrical content to latch on to, it's simply a means to sit back, relax and let Kuti, Baker and The Africa '70 do their thing for an hour. Best songs: Ye Ye De Smell, Egbe Mi O (Carry Me)
Never heard of this album before. Favorites: Black Man’s Cry Thoughts: I liked it. The history behind this album (Being a live performance with a studio audience, Creation of Afrobeat) is cool. Great percussion throughout and I like the vibe. This isn’t something I can listen to whenever though.
A nice album. Good music.
amelie liked da horns
Rätt ballt
Trummande utlovades och trummande levererades sannerligen! Gillar ändå att de gick all in.
Like very lively jazz.
Great for a live album, unique and funky.
Love an afro-beat album. Beats so good he got 27 women to marry him. Not my favorite of his but it still hits.
There are parts of every song that sound like when you don't hit snooze on your alarm and it just keeps playing over and over and over and over and over again. Decent album for background music during a galaxy gas sesh.
Don’t usually jump for an album where every song is 10+ minutes but I enjoyed this. Very chill with great beats overall!
Was good, felt like agreeable background music. The 16 minute drum solo at the end was pretty boring though.
grosse vibe afrobeat
good, but a bit boring
Percussionists wet dream. Sounds like music made for trendy late night bars. I liked it, the 15 min drum jam on the last track may have been a bit much for me but overall good stuff if you are in the mood or want something to play in the background to set atmosphere. 3.4
Fed rytmisk impro, god energi. Sikkert grinern live. Lidt lang trommesolo i sidste nummer
Fedt, anstrengende i længden men fela kuti, ægte legende
Vibes
Afrobeat is a new genre to me and I really enjoyed this one, especially the drum solo.
Album Review 050 Live! by Fela Kuti (1970) Rating 3/5 I’ve never been a fan of live albums; out of the 3,000+ albums I’ve ever bought, I’d say that less than 10 are live recordings. It’s not that I don’t love live music, I just find that one listen of a live album is often enough. So, Live! By Fela Kuti was always going to be a hard sell to me. Fela is widely seen as the key figure in the Afrobeat genre and this album showcases what is great about his music, his band, and Afrobeat in general. It’s funky, jazzy, and Tony Allen’s complex and prominent rhythm section drives the whole performance - as I would have expected. The album doesn’t disappoint and there’s a lot of energy here, but if I were to choose something for repeated listens, my preference would be to go with one of his studio albums from the mid/late-70’s*. *(hoping either Expensive Shit or Zombie are elsewhere on the 1001 generator)
hell yeah
It’s impressive but I won’t return to it
five songs one hours is crazy work loving all the different elements coming together. drummer goes crazy. piano man goes crazy. crazy jazz. Will be putting this on in the background when I am doing just anything
Huh love this guy!
African jazz…somehow much more enjoyable then most American jazz I’ve heard. The part before he introduces Ginger Baker is definitely better than the rest. 3.5 stars
Felt mixed about this one at points, excellent background music when doing other things, but when it was my sole focus i started having flashbacks to the 40 minute continuous jazz piano performance i once sat through during which i oscillated between trying as hard as i could to manifest pyrokinesis in order to trigger a fire alarm and accepting my death and new home in jazz based purgatory. That said i think there is nothing more magical than hearing a room full of voices singing together.
Found this fun to listen to and enjoyed hearing the little live bits
This is really impressive musically in a way that frankly I just can’t appreciate as well as I think the musicians deserve. Feels hard to give it an honest review when I haven’t got enough musical theory knowledge to know if what they’re doing is truly great or not.
This is what this project is about. It's a fun album and a look into a world that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Afrobeat is fun to listen to, but I don't think I'll listen often.
It was fine. World music doesn't often "wow" me, but it didn't mind listening to this. Nothing really stood out to me though.
I’ve never heard anything like that, totally new experience for me. Im willing to learn more about afrobeat The drums are absolutely killing it. But I couldn’t seat through the whole thing though
New to me. Super fun and easy listening.
Truly much better than expected.
This was a fun listen. No standouts, just quality live music.
liked the introductions of the music and the music, but 5 songs in an hour- idk about that, fine nonetheless
groovy drum solo too long black man's cry and egbe mi o are faves i like the heckle at the start of egbe, nice break
wait I'M SO ANNOYED !!!!! i took notes and it looks like they didn't save 😭😭 ....anyways, trying to remember....... I lowkey think I manifested an album of longer songs via my comment ab the previous album.... This was a really interesting album. It is not something I think I would have listened to or even discovered without this project. Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) - standout to me !!
The first example of one of the rock/pop fraternity fusing with Africa - great to hear Tony Allen as well. The birth of afrobrat (for western ears). Goes on a bit but fela kuti is very charismatic and this lays down foundations for WOMAD and such like.
Was ok
fun project! loved the instrumental a lot overall: 3.5/5 favourite tracks: ye ye de smell, egbe mi o least favourite track: ginger baker and tony allen drum solo
Mr Kuti seems like a cool Fela. Enjoyed the drum battle and black man's cry. Drags on a bit but a fairly easy listen overall.
Normally I quite like Fela Kuti but I found this a bit self-indulgent. There's nothing wrong with the music, the playing, or the singing, it just all goes on a bit without variety. I also did not need a sixteen minute drum solo, however virtuoso.
great
I don’t feel any particular way.
A good time, not one i would go back to probably
Pretty good African fusion. Ginger baker felt like more of the star here based on the emphasis of his drumming. Good stuff.
Tracks 1 and 3 were cool.
76/1001 First listen. Never heard of this guy before. I have heard badass Ginger Baker though. Others calling this jazz, I don’t think so because I liked this. I’ll be digging further into Fela Kuti’s discography. 5/10
-Fela Kuti is a somewhat challenging but also very rewarding artist to listen to imo. i absolutely adore a lot of his work (Zombie, Expensive Shit) though sometimes the long repetitive afrobeat numbers blend together for me -this isn’t my favorite thing i’ve heard from him, but i still thought it was cool. definitely best listened to as a full album because there were a lot of similarities in the song structures -Favorites: Let’s Start, Black Man’s Cry
Funky record. I like it.
This has a really cool sound and awesome beat, and it's a genre and artist that are brand new to me. It would be so fun to dance to. However, I don't think I'd reach for it to listen to again.
More jazz Love the talking and story elements Different language talking about roots Good character Not the type of jazz I like Too much brass imo Love the last song bc of percussion
3.3 Second Fela Kuti album in the space of a week but in not upset about it. Tracks 2&3 were my favourite, but sadly too long to put on a lot of my playlists. Drum solo completely unnecessary, but don't mind skipping that given it's the outro. Like Zombie, not my normal thing, but I can appreciate the artistry
This is fun. Energetic long-form music. A bit too repetitive and not detailed enough in certain places but not to the point of being boring. Ye Ye De Smell is the standout track, in my opinion. The rest are not quite as fun but still enjoyable. 7/10
Felt a bit like I was in Nando's
This one was a really cool surprise, I had no idea. Ginger breaker did so much outside of his work with cream. I can see Ware he’s one of the greatest drummers of all time, it’s fascinating to see the evolution where he went after words. Really fun, energetic music, this is a pretty great live album. Not one I necessarily go back and revisit, but it was a pleasure getting to listen to it. Solid three out of five.
Not bad for Afrobeat, especially as a live recording. Lengthy most of the time, but not boring.
Good for a train journey
p248. 1971. 3 stars. Well done African-rock hybrid. Production and playing as tight as a drum. Points deducted for being a live album, and for excessive wankage - do we really need multiple 10+ minute tracks? Not sure I'll listen to it again, but glad I heard it.
Don't understand much, but I'm really digging the energy! Fela Kuti goes hard on these tracks. Each of the tracks is a bit too long and has no real direction, he's just jamming along with whatever he feels. But it is quite fun. Best song: Let's Start
I feel confident in saying that, given sufficient preparation time, I can successfully debate anyone who argues that there is not enough quality drumming on this album.
took me a minute to get into cos the songs do go for ages and can be quite repetitive but i came around to it in the end (although the drum song was a bit hard to get through) it was refreshing though
Solid, no real bangers.
this is an energetic live record full of rhythms and it deserves attention. not my vibe though. never heard of Fela and am impressed by his biography.
I was scared of this at first, my last fela kuti album was a punish of 9 minute songs that followed the same formula. This was better, but I’m not rushing back. The drum solo last track is a cool addition and the sound is amazing for a live recording.
Interesting album, not sure I would ever choose to throw it on, but it was fun. 5.7/10
Very similar to the one I had yesterday. That was more jazz and this is more afro beat I guess? But it has the same type of spirit. The only thing is this is just more repetitive sadly. Puts it down a peg for sure. Alot of it is nice but its drove into my skull with a hammer over and over and over again. It just gets old. I do like the live element here. The language barrier honestly adds to the charm. He has to explain the names and have things almost explained to him. Thats great. The crowd clapping on a song here is nice too. Decent record and worth a listen. Im not sure it did too much for ne personally but I had enough fun
i mean what i was watching a video about fela's life this morning... starting december with this one but i dont think i like it that much. it goes on and on without rest and sometime i found it a bit boring 3/5
Nice live album. Enjoyed the drums and funk lines.
If the album had been a bit shorter and not ended on a 15 minute percussion performance, then would have been a four.
I wish it was just a bit shorter
was enjoying this as nice background music (didn't need to focus at all on lyrics). would have been a 4 but the 15 minute drum solo as final track knocked it back. that droned on way too long
Best Song: Ye Ye De Smell. This was nice and upbeat. The most enthusiastic song on the album. Worst Song: Black Man's Cry. I hate to say it, but his screaming cry just doesn't sound that musical. Overall: It's mostly good, although I feel like it lacks some of the energy that his son Femi's work has. I will say that if I am going to listen to jazz, I most frequently want to listen to the type of afro-jazz that Fela Kuti and his progeny make.
Jazz jams as they should be. Not sure if I could pick up on the added value of Baker's drumming outside of the last song. The Africa 70 deliver as always nonetheless.
I think I liked Femi more than Fela.
See my previous reviews regarding live performances. It’s got the funk.
I know that Fela largely invented Afrobeat and this was a great live album, with energetic drumming and possessing an album cover that feels like the band are jumping off the photo. But I prefer a more lyrics-based sound so while liked, it was not something I would listen to again.
Funky and fun! I'm not usually a fan of long drum solos, but that final song is great.
70s World funk and soul. A famous drummer travelling around Africa to learn about local rhythm. Jazzy. Loads of drumming, solos, very long jam sessions.
drums are sick. not what i usually listen to. i enjoy!
Fela Kuti is at his best when playing live. Classic afrobeat stuff, long but never outstays its welcome. The only thing that does go on a bit is the Ginger Baker drum solo, a musical phenomenon I’ve never really had time for.
Fela and Ginger. 5 songs, over 1 hour. Aftobeat endlessness and Ginger Baker rudimentaries until your ears bleed? We shall see! I like the liveliness of afrobeat, the mix of r&b, jazz and african ruthms and I like Fela, but i do find it can get a bit repetitive for me at times. And Ginger is an odd one on drums amd in life. Track one and its a bit as I expected. The drums follow the lead not the rythm section. Credits are sparse on iTunes for this. It basically lists Fela on vocals and Ginger on drums. Seems a bit unfair to the rest of the band Africa 70. Tony Allen was the drummer for Fela’s back band and given how associted he is with defining aftobeat i wonder how much was him and how much was Ginger? By the aounds of a few tracks it was both of them and a few more percussionsists thrown in for good measure. One thong i will say for Ginger, I suspect its not easy playing a beat like Afrobeat across from Tony who has grown up and lived these beats deep into his being and i fewl Ginger does a decent job of not sounding like an English rock muso trying to play afrobeat. Interesting alb. Not sure i would liaten to it a lot but worth 3 stars for the main characters alone.
I can listen to an hour of upbeat jazz music, even if I wouldn’t ever chose to.
6/10
3.5
let's start: love the initial vibes
Another case of "appreciate the energy, wouldn't listen for the whole album"
It's ok as background music but it isn't good enough for me to want to ever revisit it. It's the kind of music you'd hear when a character is walking through a city during the opening scene of a B list romcom. Mastering is good though.
Could probably benefit from a bit more structure but still an enjoyable listen 3.5*
Funky international
Afro- jazz
Fun 60s African Music.
nice
Great energy, a lot of drums
This is #day434 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it's been 295 days since my first Fela Kuti album, which I rated a 3. It's fun to learn that Ginger Baker from Cream is on drums here. One of the better live records on the list: very jazzy, funky, and groovy, but jazzy most of all. I gave it a spin on my Technics SU-7300 (because it's the '70s), and it felt just right. This is a strong 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day435.
The 16-minute drum solo at the end really ruined this for me lol. There was some fun and groovy stuff on here though.
Funky, yet enticing album, which is rather jazzy and alive in a way that makes it familiar. Despite only containing 5 tracks, it manages to take up a bit over an hour of listening.
Interesting afrobeat/jazz album. However, I'm not sure I'm into the added 16 minutes drum duet. Whatever you need to have inside you to appreciate that, I don't have it.
I certainly realize the strength of this performance and the brilliance of just about everyone playing on it. The rhythms and percussion is other-worldly. It is worthy of inclusion in the list of albums you must hear before you die.
Nice enough album. A lot of his stuff suffers from droning on.
Estu puf don greyway, nint.
I like it, but there isn't quite enough to latch on to to love it. You had to be there I guess.
Live! by Fela Kuti is an album I’ve always wanted to listen to, so I was looking forward to giving it a try today. Fela Kuti is certainly an interesting listen — there’s so much happening musically, with incredible musicianship throughout. That said, I’m not a huge fan of long, largely instrumental tracks, and that’s exactly what this album offers. There’s a lot of repetition and some seriously extended drum and guitar solos. I can fully appreciate the talent on display, but for me, this works best as enjoyable background music rather than something I’d sit down and focus on. Favourite track: All of the tracks are worth a listen, aside from the lengthy drum solo. Least favourite track: The extended drum solo — it goes on far too long for my taste. Album artwork: Cool album cover — simple but effective.
Just like Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, this is a great album for getting some writing done. And I kept forgetting it was a live album because everything sounded crisp and perfect. Not one for everyday listens, but this album goes straight into my "will revisit" folder.
Not his best, but his first ?
01) Let's Start - 6,5 02) Black Man's Cry - 6,5 03) Ye Ye De Smell - 6,5 04) Egbe Mi O (Carry Me I Want to Die) -6,5 TOTAL: 6,50 (65/100) Current ranking: 480/692
Acrobat is not a genre I am familiar with. However I love the rhythms and I liked the sound (most of it) However to quote Captain Sensible "the British charts consisted of Little Jimmy Osmond, the Partridge Family ans 20 minute drum solos. This album has a16 minute drum solo......too much
Quite nice, the instrumental was great, not a huge fan of the vocals. Solid live record.
cool, but I'm not too big of a fan of live albums.
Really just a big jam session. Not particularly blown away. I got into certain parts but then they seemed to go on and on and on. Very repetitive and not as intricate or rhythmically complex as I had anticipated aside from the drum solo track which i gather wasnt part of the original album. For the most part we are locking into a groove and then noodling on top. Highlights are when the drums do start jazzing outward here and there. At times the two drummers syncopated in such different ways whilst somehow blending together and maintaining the flow. For me the percussion was definitely the stand out factor in the album, just hoped for a little more in the body of the songs. Favourite track probably - Egbe Mi O, enjoyed the crowd singalong. Bonus points for how good the album sounds live, in fact its easy to forget its live at times. 6.5/10
3.5 stars
Just another world record.I mean, it's pretty good at times but it does get very repetitive.I don't mind repetitive music, but it doesn't warrant anything.Past the normal, three stars for a solid world beat record
Extremely good sounding for being recorded live. The chemistry is palpable and the jams are very good. That being said, imo, you need to be a fan of the genre and/or the musicians to truly want to repeat a listen. Being somewhat familiar with Kuti's background and story makes it a tiny bit more enjoyable, and the full play through is consistent, setlist and mood wise. I'm just not a big fan of the genre.
i have enjoyed fela kuti’s studio albums that i’ve had so far on this project, but i always struggle with properly engaging in live album. this one in particular drags on quite a bit. they are no doubt very talented and i bet it would’ve been amazing to see this live. even just cooking to this album i wanted to change music at times. i was very engaged at first. then yeah, got bored of it i guess. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Am I cool enough for this album? Probably not, but it sounded pretty great!
This was cool, glad to have listened to it, but not sure I’d listen to again
some songs went for way too long, but I like it.
It's good for what it is, but I don't think I'll add it to my playlist
Love this list for this stuff, great listen
Ret meget som jeg forventede. Det er fint i små portioner.
Det er hyggeligt. Hverken mere eller mindre
On today's roll of the 1001 albums to hear before I die, I got an album by an artist I truly have wanted to check something out from but never did, Fela Ransome-Kuti. While this release is not a studio project it is still a representation of Kuti's music in the live setting and surprisingly is extremely compelling overall. This album is so groovy and is such a great time to get down and dance to. This is music I am sure people in the audience were on their feet for and had an equally great time as I did listening to this album as all the instruments mesh together to create a very wonderful blend of Afrobeat and Jazz-Funk. This is music where it is really easy to get lost in with just how entrancing each of the performing artists here are and with just how skilled each and every member of Africa '70 truly is. While I did very much enjoy this project, I don't get why this is seen as essential by any means. Sure it is really solid on all ends but I don't think anything here really blew my mind in terms of the quality or compositions. It is just some damn good live performing, that's all. While I am glad I finally checked out some Fela Kuti, I do wish I was able to get more out of this in general.
Jazz: it was alright, nice as background music, but nothing overly captivating.
Really surprised how much I liked this. Felt like a noisier version of lofi or something I could listen to while working.
Interesting. Will need another listen.
I bet Andy Kershaw likes it. Could get a couple of decent deep house /trance tracks out of the album.
Funk?? Soul?? World?? Jazz?? What can you really even describe this album as?? I’m not entirely sure, but either way it’s pretty good. The energy that Fela Kuti brings to this performance is electric, and the addition of Ginger Baker makes it even better. The little intros to the songs with Fela explaining the meaning behind the song names is charming and adds some flair to the mix. While this one won’t stick with me for a long time, I enjoyed every song on the main album, and listening to Fela belt out a “Yeeeeeeeeah, Black Man’s Cry” or a “La la la la” is hype as hell. My favorite song was “Egbe Mi O (Carry Me)”. The only thing on the album I could have done without was the 16 minute long drum solo. I found it more annoying than enjoyable. Next up, the regular Non-Live Fela Kuti album.

This was good - something I would have never listened to without this! Probably won’t pull it out again.
I like this Fela but not this record so much.
Meh
Awesome vibe on this album. Relatively accessible. 3+
Not my style, but not bad
Nice as background music for doing chores and art.
Jazzy, and Dean Martin inspired tracks, but mainly very unique in composition.
I thought it was pretty good A little repetitive Very jazzy vibes sometimes. Good vibes
Funky and fun.
Very new to me. Let's GO! I like a lot of African music with out ever really seeking it out. The first half of the first song makes me wonder why I don't listen more. I'd love coming across this band at a festival or something. Not sure I'll go back to it in my day-to-day life but right now I am really enjoying this. Insane drumming on track 3. What a jam! Longest drum solo I've ever heard to close out. Didn't hate it thats for sure. I'm really glad I heard this album. Not sure how much staying power it has with me but it was an excellent listen. 3.5/5
good live album mid album
Decent afro jams live album
For me, this feels more like a chapter in the history of modern music than something I would chose to listen to. The musicianship from Fela and Ginger and co is brilliant and their influence is clear.
Just good, upbeat music that you can't help but tap your toes to. I already had his Zombie album on here, and I seemed to like that one more, but this was a good one too. 3/5
Fun album. Didn't get into it as much as zombie
Fun listen. Production value is so good. Drums sound tight af!
The instrumentation is really good but these songs just drag too long for my non-jammy tastes
Had never heard of this, but made the mistake of reading about it before listening. What I heard was enjoyable but did not live up to the raves.
Funky jazz - I like the funk-Afro beats under the jazz solos and it wasn't too speedy/stressful. I wasn't a huge fan of the 16 minute drum solo though.
I’m not much of a fan of world music, however, this album was quite enjoyable. The only thing that I didn’t like was, it’s a little too jam band for my tastes.
Still don't think live albums should be here but this one was a lot of fun except for the last track.
5.5/10
This was actually kinda fun. No idea who these guys were but the tempo was upbeat and it got me tapping along. Will I listen again though? Probably not.
Chillig, ganz nett.
From Rolling Stone: “This intimate collaboration was actually recorded in Abbey Road studio instead of a traditional rock venue, but was electric nonetheless.” Kuti is a rhythm master, but a 16-minute drum duet to close the album is pretty egomaniacal.
Drums and weird yelling. That's all I hear.
Good music, easy to listen to, but gets into self-indulgent drum solos and songs that carry on for too long because they're playing for a club and not an album listener. I wouldn't listen to this again without impairment.
Cool song, nice drum solo . . . oh, the drum solo is still going
Another one that I have never heard before! Great 4th of July Listening? 3/5 #musicsky #albumsky #musicchallenge
Fun, fine, but not an everyday thing for me.
There are a lot of great Fela records and some of them should be on any essential list. This one with Ginger Baker isn’t one of them. Just a live album. Pretty good. Mostly a ploy.
Pretty decent despite the lyrics not being in English. Niceix of jazz and funk with African drums. The 15 minute drum solo to end the album is pure self indulgence though.
Should be a separate list called 101 live performances you wished you were at, or something. This is really well recorded, all the playing is great, I can't really fault it. But I'm giving it a 3. Would be a 5 if i was there.
Pretty feet. Sent it to hughbie and he coomed
Was actual a fun album.
Influence on or by The Doors and Bob Marley?
It was decent, wouldn't seek it out again but didn't hate it.
I haven't listened to retro West African music before. Enjoyed this live one more than I thought I would. Nice vibe and the jazz drum solos were pretty good.
I enjoyed this record. I love the way that they worked the crowd in "Egbe Mi O", and how they got the audience to help with the song. Favourite Track(s): Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) Least Favourite Track(s): Drum Solo
Like it 3/5
just really solid music. would i ever seek it out again? probably not. if it was on, would I change it? nope!
Great energy throughout, but a bit too repetitive and uniform. Kinda felt like I was listening to the same song the whole time. Still a solid listen.
Closer to a 3.5, not quite a 4. Really fun and interesting but not one I'm really eager to relisten
Fun and funky with a traditional African flair, this was a pretty entertaining listen!
Not his best work and I don't like live albums, but Fela Kuti has an undeniable energy in this, so it's not the worst live album I've ever heard. I enjoyed almost all of it. 3/5
When this generated I was super excited! Kind of thing you look for in this generator, something you’ve never heard of, or listened to! It was ok, but didn’t do enough for me I’m afraid!
It was cool hearing the commentary. Solos were a little long for me, but that's the point.
