Reviews (page 3 of 13)

Enjoyed this more than I knew I would. Great songwriter and a great guy, happy to have found this

Ovaj album pokazuje nevjerojatnu versatilnost, s jedne strane predivne balade i ljubavne pjesme poput I'll never leave you , s druge strane zabavne šarmantne pjesme kao Coconut. 11/10

Great album

Great music

What a treat

Loved it!!!

Wow. Just wow. This one is amazing! Very weird and different but I really like that experimental stuff, 70s musicians did. Why is no one doing stuff like that today? I don't get it. Seems like musicians aren't brave enough these days. Maybe it's some kind of management stuff and they need to make more and more money so no time for experiments. Maybe I'm just getting old... Anyway, record is a good and solid 4 stars. 5th star for the name!

I had already heard a few of the songs on Nilsson Schmilsson and had always liked them, but would never have put them as the same artist (ex. Gotta get up/coconut) I didn’t love every song, but I enjoyed it as a whole

All timer, for the robe alone

This was fucking outstanding. Some beautifully sad songs and that’s what I love.

A great baroque pop effort.

Nice Dude!

I have this album in my collection

Loved several songs. Def good daytime music to go on a walk

A wide and varied collection of brilliant pop rock tunes. Nilsson took the torch from the Beatles and had a brief but spectacular run with this album.

I knew three tracks on this, but I really love it. Sounds like solo Paul McCartney to me.

Excellent. That late 60s early 70s psych-pop. Definitely can tell he hung with the Beatles. Is a regular listen

Had no idea he was such a revered musician. Only knew “Put the lime in the coconut” before this. Absolutely love Without You.

Coconut!

I’m a huge fan of the soundtrack to The Point, but I’d never heard any of Nilsson’s other stuff I’m so glad I listened to this album because it’s so unbelievably good too good to rate, but I guess five stars will suffice

Second Nilsson album ever, it was great

Jump into the Fire alone is worth 4 stars

great singer, great music

Harry's work is defined by his original lyrics with humorous twist but it does not overshadows the great melodic part of his songs. It's a true 70s album (feels like late 70s but it's actually the begin of the decade) with a great roadtrip feeling around it. What a Creative mind.

Parker- 5/5 Al - 5/5

A really fine album. One we listened to some playing cards as a teenager, but it wasn’t in heavy rotation. A batch of great songs, and side 2 is killer, with 2 big hits and a great track that LCD Soundsystem would cover almost 40 years later. Plus, the album opens with the theme song from Russian Dolls! A great talent who died at 52 and recorded no more albums for the last 14 years of his life, instead indulging in booze and drugs (died of a heart attack). Have to give it a 5, even though I feel like 5s are mostly reserved (for me) for albums that I know super well and have always loved.

Ken leeee... budibu dibu douchuu.... !!!! Nice discovery! Really enjoyed listening! 100% will return to this one!

I had never heard of Harry Nilsson before and that is a shame. I had, of course, heard several of the songs on this album. It was a fantastic album, one of my favorites so far.

Love love love. A new classic favorite. Early in the morning instrumentals are incredible

This album is fantastic! The Beatles vibe of this album hits the spot. My regret is not listening to Harry Nilsson sooner. Coconut is so playful and brings me so much joy. I can picture jamming to this album while doing literally anything. I was going to give this a 4/5, but the album title pushes it to 5/5 for me.

i've always enjoyed nilsson's discography. a year or two ago i discovered his album "the point", a wonderfully dreamy rock pop album with an equally fantastic animated film containing a fantastic message. but alas we're not here to talk about that one. like that album, this album is absolutely equal when it comes to song quality and keeping my invested. his folksy instrumentation and his WONDERFUL tenor voice go hand in hand. it's half emotional half chill.

Phenomenal!

I want this album to follow me around and be my soundtrack for life.

Every song sounded like one I thought I knew but realised I didn't, weird experience. Cool album though

LOVE THIS. Coconut is one of my favorite songs ever, and I can’t believe I didn’t know that I didn’t realize he was the iconic cover of Without You. Wowza! Adding this to repeat later!

Очень круто. Очень. Круто. Я с вокала готов был уже сразу пятёрку лупануть.

Gotta get up, alegre y energizante. El álbum está lleno de canciones para todos los gustos. Me encanta.

I went into this album blind. I hadn't really heard of Harry Nilsson, but of course I knew "Without You" and "Coconut" because of Reservoir Dogs. If I didn't know any better I would assume Harry was English, because his sound is like a cross between John Lennon and Paul McCartney and his music has a very Beatles/Wings sound to it. He’s got a fantastic voice. Going down the rabbit hole I found out I was partially right. He was American, not English, but was friends with (and admired by) The Beatles. Deeper down the hole you'll find out that a flat he once owned in London was the site of not one, but two celebrity deaths. In the same room, in the same bed, four years apart. Both Mama Cass and Keith Moon were 32 when they died.

This album is amazing. There's a couple of forgettable tunes, but they're canceled out by the bangers. Probably a 4.5, but gets elevated by the fact that I had John Lennon's Imagine yesterday. It's crazy how much better this album is than Imagine.

I can't hear "Without You" without a mental image of the suicide scene from The Rules of Attraction. Great album here. Bastard child of Randy Newman and the Beatles. Unexpected bangers: Jump Into The Fire, Let the Good Times Roll

Gotta Get Up Without You Coconut Jump Into The Fire ...Stone Cold Classics Early in The Morning Let the Good Times Roll Super solid

Some true gems here. Aside from the novelty “Coconut” record, “Without You” is a classic, but it’s the range of styles and themes that’s most impressive. I feel like I’ve missed out on a whole world by not appreciating Nilsson before now.

Genius period

excellent! an old fave

I was so happy to finally see this one here! Love all of it.

Repeat album, good one though

Diverse and fun!

Perfect album of quirky genius. Thirty-five minutes of eccentric pop mastery. I really love this album more than words can describe. Nilsson should be spoken of in the same breath as Brian Wilson, Lennon/McCartney and Smokey Robinson for sheer songwriting power and pure fun.

Knew some songs, new to others. Love the early 70s folksy rock n roll

Superb album that I've loved and cherished for a long time. Part of me wishes there were more Nilsson on the 1001, but Schmilsson really is the cleanest and best of the bunch in terms of consistent quality. Down is a fantastic track

Again, how have I been missing this all this time?

A songwriter’s songwriter. This album has a Point! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really incredibly goofy, but I'm a fan of it.

Every song is great.

One of my comfort albums. The diversity of song types is wonderful and it's almost shocking that all of these are on one record. 5/5

The best.

Pretty good. I was surprised by the coconut song, I had no idea he sang it

Going straight from Without You to Coconut is bonkers. I love it.

Never listened to this album before. Until I got to Without You. Jump into the Fire is a groovy track. Solid album.

A classic by the American Beatle, Harry Nilsson.

A hidden treasure, so glad this was recommended. Created enough interest for me to search for more personal information and more from Nilsson's catalogue.... great introduction to songs that I already had dwelling deep inside.

I had this album! A present from my auntie who emigrated in the 70s. Still a great album- weird how his biggest hits weren't written by him. He has an incredible voice though. I like all the tracks from playing them a zillion times. They are slow burners- not big and theatrical but good natured and personable.

It's a crime I had never heard of this guy before. This album was incredible and Gotta Get Up is probably worth the 5 stars by itself. Will definitely be listening to this one again.

Great album title. Nice weekend morning listen

I didn't think I knew who Narry Nilsson was but as soon as I heard the start of Gotta Get Up, I knew I have heard him before. I was surprised that I knew so many of these songs but didn't recognise his name. He really is a great singer songwriter and I think there is something special here. While I really like the first two songs, I think this album is very back heavy. Most of the songs I loved were on the second half, and it makes me wonder, if I own this album on vinyl would I play the second side more than the first side. I think Gotta Get Up following Driving Along might be the perfect 1-2 combination. A song about getting up and then driving to work. Obviously Without You is the highlight of this album, it's such an amazing song, I think his version of this song so so much better than most others. I am still not sure about Coconut, it just too much of a joke song for this album especially after Without You. However if it is a hangover cure, then maybe it's the right place for this song. This album was really amazing, I am so glad to discover it. Standouts: Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, Without You, Let the Good Times Roll, Jump Into the Fire, I'll Never Leave You

Absolutely beautiful! There’s melodrama but also so much fun. Always loved Nilsson and this album is a great evidence of why

I loved Nilsson ever since watching a pirate copy of (then banned) Reservoir Dogs on a holiday in St Ives as a 14 year old. My beloved cavachon dog is called Arrow after a Nilsson song. When people ask and I explain, they've never heard of Nilsson, except this one girl who started singing the song as soon as I said Arrow. Anyway Nilsson was terrific, so many absolute bangers. If you let this album slip through your ears as "some random folksy thing" then screw you. It's better than that.

CLASSIC. Harry Nilsson is the GOAT!

I would have said I'd never heard of this guy, but he has so many great, classic songs. For me, a hidden gem.

I hate to say that I have never really been super aware of who Harry Nilsson exactly was, even as I knew and loved so many of his songs. How sad I feel about that now. That said, I did immediately download "Gotta Get Up" after watching "Russian Doll" on Netflix in 2019. "Without You" and "Coconut" are songs that have existed in my space for decades, and yet it never never never would have occurred to me that they are sequential songs on the same album by the same artist. I have a vivid memory of a childhood friend, circa 1979, who told me that the local AM radio station had played "Coconut" the night before. I expressed my despair at missing it, and she called the station and urgently requested it, but they refused, saying it had been played too recently. That's what we had instead of Spotify. Kids don't even know. But I digress. This is marvelous, each song its own unique gem. The first four songs made one of my best drives to work early in the morning ever, even though I didn't want to go to there. Five stars.

Fabulous! Every track was my favorite!

This album filled me with honest-to-God GLEE today. Distinct songs, each with its own style and instrumentation, each telling a different understandable story. I feel like a crabby grampa saying they don't write 'em like this anymore but this is just so fun and good.

This was a staple of my childhood and was always there in the family cassette collection. As a kid I loved the bathrobed artist on the cover, the funny Nilsson Schmilsson title, and the quirky music. Coconut was one of my favorite songs. When this came up today I remember Coconut, Without You and Let The Good Times Roll really, really well. But I couldn’t have said much about the rest. As the album played I had instant recognition of each song, sometimes before it started as my brain started recalling the play order. It’s been at least 30 or more years since I listed to this album in its entirety but the songs are carved onto my brain. A great trip down memory lane and a reminder that the gems of my youth are glimmering away waiting for me to unearth and enjoy them yet again! A fantastic album through and through!

🔥 So good. Wasn't sure what to expect. Did not disappoint. I'll be listening to this again. 🔥

My guy

Fuckin banger

One of the best of all time

Finally, Nilsson Schmillson

I wish I had listened to this artist long ago. Very fun album and something that I plan to listen to in the future.

Not bad. Recognised Without You from peep show I believe

This album is wonderful. Listened to it three times. Without you and Coconut can’t really go wrong.

Loved this, timeless.

Awesome album. Nilsson's harmonies are wonderful

Kvs style

Nilsson is one of the best and this is one of his best! Jump Into the Fire is a particular fave

This is a beloved album in my household and I was pumped that it came up today. I loved the relisten. You can definitely hear the Beatles in there, which isn’t surprising considering Harry’s association with them. When Moonbeam came up, I had to stop myself from humming along at work. Coconut always gets me too. I know it’s a silly song, but I love its sound and the way it slowly builds on top of itself. But I love all the songs. Just an all around fantastic album that always puts a smile on my face. Did I rabbit hole on Nilsson after this? Yes, I did, and I was glorious. Chef’s kiss.

Classic

Pop perfection Every song sounds like a different genre to the next Favourite tracks: Gotta Get Up, The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Coconut, Let the Good Times Roll, Jump Into the Fire, I’ll Never Leave You

Tip top.

u can't top it!

I had no idea who this was, until I started getting through it and knew heaps of the songs. My favourite is the coconut song and I'm pretty excited to finally know the originator of this. Five out of five stars!

Nilsson! Love this guy. Loved The Point since I was a kid and recently started getting back into his stuff. This is very much The Point-era Nilsson. His musicianship, voice, sense of humor, the whole thing feels like home.

I used to have a morning ritual when I was in ninth grade. I would wake up, open up the iPad, go on Spotify, search for Nilsson Schmilsson and press play. It was quaint, too, for the opening song was literally called Gotta Get Up. Like most things, it fell by the wayside but the memories linger, as did the greatness that surrounds this album. It's been a bit of a thrill, over the years, to encounter some songs from this album again in varying movies and television shows and be reminded of Harry Nilsson's overall brilliance. He was just too good for his time and perhaps too good for anytime, really. Maybe if he were British, he'd be on Elton John's level in terms of reverence and appeal. Nilsson Schmilsson is his finest hour in a career full of finest hours.

A near perfect album. Nilsons many vocal stylings match the ever changing feel of each song on the album. From emotional ballads to funky experimental numbers, minimalist blues to hard rock and all done without feeling disjointed.

This is one of my favourite albums. Nilsson was once deemed just to be a solo Beatle (since he worked with Lennon) but his music is a lot more. It is rocky and mellow and the same time and there is always some sense of longing. It's a perfect album for many moods. Favourite track: Too many! "Jump into the Fire" if I had to choose one.

This was a really unique album. A lot of different genres on it and almost every song was really catchy.

I loved this! Apple Music had it listed as rock but it felt more like pop to me. This was original and quirky, without being over the top. There was good variety to the songs and each song was strong. Also, what a voice! I'd come back to this album for sure.

The best voice in rock music.

Woah 5/5!

Contiene With or Without you ... una de mis canciones favoritas. Los primeros acordes erizan la piel: preciosa voz, Harry Nilsson. Maldita Mariah Carey. También tiene otras canciones conocidas: Gotta Get Up, Coconut

It is hard to believe that this is Nilsson's seventh mainstream release. As a somewhat blatant attempt to have mainstream success it works incredibly well. The three hits (Without You, Coconut and Jump Into The Fire) are so diverse that they give a good overview of his incredible skills. Add in The Moonbeam Song and you have a classic. Without You is arguably the first power ballad. Whether the credit goes to Richard Perry (producer) or a mature Nilsson, this is as good an album as Nilsson gave us and a great example of how awesome pop rock could be in 1971.

While I knew a bunch of these songs, I'd never listened to this album. Thought it was great. He clearly spent a lot of time listening to the Beatles and I think Billy Joel probably listened to this over and over. Even though there are a couple of hits here, I'm really surprised that he never really broke through in a big way.

Coconut.

Contiene With or Without you ... una de mis canciones favoritas. Los primeros acordes erizan la piel: preciosa voz, Harry Nilsson. Maldita Mariah Carey. También tiene otras canciones conocidas: Gotta Get Up, Coconut

Amazing album! Nothing else like it!

Sweet Birthday Baby! I got into this album after listening to the opening track over and over again through Russian Doll and then discovered the rest of the album was full of killer tracks too. Maybe a bit of a generous 5 but as it’s on pretty regular rotation in my house seems only fair.

Russian Doll, Without You e fucking Lime in the Coconut. Absolute bangers.

4 stars for the music 1 star for the album cover

Imagine the kind of person that doesn't rate this a 5

A great singer songwriter at the apex of his craft.

GODDDDDDDDDD this is so good harry seems like he would have been fun to hang out with. after this I started listening to the Popeye soundtrack, and all his demos are really fun. I love his voice

Some really great songs I’d never heard.

Smart, funny, sorta sweet and plenty kooky, never bloated or banal. If you prefer Lennon’s honest wit be matched by Macca’s precious whimsy, look no further than this best-of-both-worlds. In short, everything a good pop/rock record is and should be. Standout Tracks: Gotta Get Up, Without You, Coconut, Jump Into the Fire

lots of songs ive heard from movies and shows that i didnt know were from him

Loved it

I didn't know this man's name at all, then the first track on the album is a song I really like! I had thought for years that it was by some more recent indie band or something. Also "Coconut." It was a surprise. This is the kind of 70s music I usually like, but with more piano and I think more... sadness? Wistfulness? Weirdness? I liked "Gotta Get Up" (of course) and "Jump Into the Fire," which has an excellent instrumental break towards the end. Many were good. I will return to this one.

So silly. Classic.

One of my favorite albums

I'm shocked at how many great songs that aren't "hits" are on this album. Really fantastic writing and songs.

Really stellar and beyond his time.

Hadn't listened to it before. Great voice!!

I've waiting to hear this album on here, but It's hard to even know where to begin talking about it. I've become big fan of Nilsson in recent years and this album represents him so well- in every charming, messy and fascinating way. But... I mean, it's a lot to digest. My thought right off the bat was that this was probably a 4. But really, this album is everything that the absolute best, best albums are. It's musically adventurous, technically gorgeous, effortlessly endearing, and with an ear for pop songcraft that very few artists can touch. Nilsson also is also slightly off his rocker, which is probably the secret sauce behind the whole thing. There are pieces to this album that absolutely should not work together, but he makes them work. That's some kind of mad genius. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): I'll Never Leave You, Jump into the Fire, Without You, The Moonbeam Song, Gotta Get Up, Down, Driving Along, Early in the Morning, Coconut, Let the Good Times Roll

Excelente

Delighted to learn the song from Russian Doll was old! I knew several of these but had no idea it was him. Listened all the way through several times!

All-time great album

Beautiful

really good

Loved it! Great start to finish!

I spent about half this album wondering why I recognized his name until I got to the lime & coconunt song (simply called “Coconut”, apparently!), which was like somebody slapped me. What’s crazy is the rest of the thing sounds nothing like that! Most of the rest of the album sounds like the halfway point between Beatles and Elton John, it’s great! Seriously, I wish I could explain better what it is about this that’s like, similar to Beatles and other late-60s brit acts like Kinks, Monkees etc, but different in a way that I liked way more. Like it incorporates blues a lot more, maybe?

How did I miss this. One of the best albums ever created

Already knew I loved this album. 'Jump into the Fire' is just an all-time great song. Really great songwriting and fun songs. Standout tracks: Gotta Get Up, Without You, Coconut, Let the Good Times Roll, Jump into the Fire

really enjoyed this one, took me back to the summer of 74’ when i wasn’t born yet! oh to go back to the days of not existing :’)

Coconut—>put the lime in the coconut!

Absolute Classic!

Really cool album. Actually never heard about Harry Nilsson and there’s deffo more great music to discover there!

I've always loved this album, it was on the record player a lot during my teen years. Great voice, great variety of tracks and some real classics in there.

Excellent! Surprised I hadn't even heard of this one before. Playful, fun pop-rock with some very clever lyrics.

Great album

I didn't realize Harry Nilsson was responsible for so many absolute bops.

I listened to this a long time ago when I first got into John Lennon, he told me about this guy and everything was peachy. From what I remember it was pretty good

Definitely heard Gotta Get Up before. Some Beatles elements. Very nice album.

Good stuff, even the jokey songs

Haha this is great. At times joyful, at times heartbreaking. Faves: Gotta Get Up, Coconut

Damn, he was on fire on this album, eh? Great stuff! Fave track - "Coconut" such an iconic tune!

Early in the morning, bom vocal solo! Without you, clássica e Si Nos Estas, versão em espanhol. Coconut tem um hook bacana.

Surprised how much of this I knew

No idea what to expect but this is awesome. so many great tunes. Will be listening to this again many times.

Great listen

Good Album

Wall to wall pop perfection

Jasno mi je zašto su ga The Beatlesi toliko volili, prvi put slušan i baš mi se sviđa!!

Never heard of it, lovely to listen to.

Perfection

Obv. one of the greats. Jump Into the Fire is an unexpectedly fun jam!

Fabulous ! Nan’s favourite album and for that reason and all the associated memories as well as the great tracks 5*

Quirky album. I dig it.

Wow, so many gems on this album, I can't believe I never heard of Harry Nilsson!!

Loved this album more than I expected! Definitely going into my regular rotation. Reminds me of my dad and learning about rock music.

This is intriguing! It sounds like the sort of indie folk rock that had its moment in the 90s, like the Lemonheads when they stopped going punk. And yet it's not quite possible to say this would have influenced those 90s groups because the legend of this album is that it lingered in obscurity until a 90s rerelease. The production is bright and the album has an enjoyable pace. Give me this slice of the mid 70s that sounds just as fresh 45 years on.

un album che poteva essere uscito ieri per quanto è attuale a livello musicale, la voce trasmette un sacco di emozioni, estremamente godibile e non eccessivamente lungo

Rad! Loved the album and ashamed I never knew it. 4.6

Plenty of 'wow never knew that was hin'

Ik heb al jaren zo'n zwak voor dit album en voor Harry. Ik maakte een sprongetje toen ik zag dat dit album verscheen uit de "album-generator".

Exceptional album. Really really enjoyed it, recognised a few of the songs but never knew who sang them.

This is excellent, well written songs and a stone cold classic in without you. Loved it

Brilliant. Knew a few Nilsson songs before, but this is incredible songwriting.

Melodic

Slaps 10/10

Also, watch this Professor of Rock episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giz1AlXVY5U

I'm absolutely loving this album. I don't think there is a bad song on this record. There are some great highs and lows. I feel Nilsson has a great sense of humor. I'll keep this one handy

Very nice indeed!

When I saw the album cover, I was like “OH HELL NO”, since I’ve had enough 70’s music that looked like this. Damn if I wasn’t surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I had never heard the original version of “Without You”, which was great to hear.

this was such a strange and unexpected banger 1. Without You 2 Gotta Get Up 3. Let the Good Times Roll Honourable mention - that fuckass coconut song

Shame about some of the accents on Coconut (and frankly that song all together), but other than that: pure class pop record.

This was unexpectedly good, especially his voice, which was as good as his songwriting.

Coconut is a banger, few more good tracks. Lots of 12 bar blues with a twist

Wel leuk

damn i didn't realise all these songs were not by the beatles

No huge comments other than I will never not love the sound of the late 60s/early 70s.

What a vibe! Love it, should I give it 5 stars? Love the production

A fun album, some classics that are definitely unique!

Fun, funny, creative and just quality music. Jump into the Fire is a little obnoxious but it is easily forgivable.

I enjoyed it a lot ! I will be listening again to have more thoughts about it but I liked it

Put the lime in the cookie call it coconut Okay WOW this went hard while being sick in bed

Day 8 : I know the name and recognize the cover but never listened to this. Discovered that Without You is from this album but also that it is a cover. But this is the version I know and not sure about the original. Typicaly 70s singer songwriter album with very heavy Beatles influence/vibe. I read that he was a drinking buddy of John Lennon in his NY period. Random notes per track - Gotta Get Up : Starts like it could have been Billy Joel with the Beatles. Like the vibe and loose horns accompanying it. Its a fun song - Driving Along: Another great beatles influenced composition. I like it - Early in the morning sounds like a song from Nina Simone. Nice bluesy track - Moonbeam song : too cheesy for me - Down : nice with the horns -Without you: I knew this one but not actively that was from Harry Nillson. Classic 70s song. nothing more, nothing less - coconut: never heard this and not sure what I should think of this, would be nice for a children's compilation. Could also fit on any album from Jack johnson - Jump into the Fire: great rocker with a nice build up though a steady rhythm and in between guitar work and a crazy bass . the long drum solo part is saved by the guitar that is being interweaved with it until the end. - I'll never leave you - slow ballad which fits as a album closer. I don't like the singing here too much. Its a bit a weird track too be honest. John Lennon vibes indeed. Overall it was an interesting listen and might play it again or when I see the vinyl at a flea market for a reasonable price (lets say 5-10 euro) I might take it with me. It's not really a 4 yet for me but rather a 3.5.

I love the creative variety in this album!

Ken Lee is a COVER? some solid tracks in here, 3.75 rounding up

I mean, this is an important album. It's got some chill and groovy pop hits like Coconut, Gotta Get Up, and Let The Good Times Roll. But then there is this crushing ballad Without You mixed in there. Great album, super fun.

Solid album, I'd be good never hearing Coconut again though. Love the range on this album. Favorite tracks: Jump Into The Fire, Gotta Get Up, Down

Buenas vibras, albumsito slow relax

4 Some real 'ohh that's who that was' moments here. Without you - coconut is quite a vibe change

Good album

very original in the rythm, also composition of some songs

Some reason reminded me of the muppets films so just sounded like a sad depressed muppet was great

Fun album, although it swaps genre for every track. Favourite track: Without You

Some super fun tracks on this one, I really loved listening to this. It just made me feel happy. Some slower tracks that I enjoyed too such as Moonbeam which sounds like it came straight from a John Grant record. Despite being a cover, 'Without You're ally does sound fantastic on this. Favourites: Gotta Get Up Driving Along Coconut Jump Into The Fire

Better than I expected

Very decent 70s singer songwriter stuff. Gotta Get Up is a classic.

Who knew the Lime in the Coconut guy had so many facets?

Not really listened to this album in its entirety before. Already aware of the big hits. Quite enjoyed the variety.

you put the lime in the coconut 🐜🦟🐜🦟

I’m sorry Harry Nilsson, I wasn’t familiar with your game

Coconut is a classic, and it’s a good way to close out Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs.

Surprisingly good album. I had never heard of this guy and the album cover is just some dude in a robe with a pipe... but damn, the dude can write a song. Just consistently well crafted, earnest pop music throughout. As it turns out I did know "Coconut" but just never knew who Nilsson was. Probably a bunch of other songs of his I know but am unaware are his... I'm reminded of Beatles or Beach Boys tracks in part. Again, really satisfying album.

I find myself caught between loving and not even liking this album unsuccessful listening. This is the relationship I’ve had with it for years. I think it might be perfect. I’m not trying to make a coaching argument either way. This album is a thing in my life.

Album is cohesive but each song felt like it brought something unique. pertty alright

I quite enjoyed this, few covers mixed in livened things up a little

I wasn’t familiar with Mr. Nilsson’s work but I enjoyed this introduction very much. Great lyrics, fun vocals and the instrumentals were bang on, all you need from 70s music. Without You is an amazing cover and the best I’ve heard so far.

A nice little album! 4/5

A bold album with really great vocals. I've never seen the idea implemented where the same song is sung in different languages on the same album, but I love it.

Harry Nilsson’s *Nilsson Schmilsson* is a good to very good singer-songwriter album with unmistakable Beatles vibes. There’s not much more to say about it—except perhaps that I wasn’t familiar with his recording of “Without You,” and that, as a result, Mariah Carey has just lost the last shred of relevance she had for me. A nice find—I didn’t expect that given the quirky cover!

Chill alt

I really enjoy this album more and more as time goes on. Not as much as The Point, but still quite a lot.

Beautifully written songs and performed with gusto. I can't say I will remember anything after the first half.

Most important question here: love or hate the coconut song? For me, love! Looking forward to countless hours of earworm. Apart from that, strong album which covers lots of styles. Incredible voice also. Side note: For many years I thought pop music is mostly shitty and not for me. But recently I realized that there was a time when pop music was pretty good. This album serves to prove the case. 3.5/5 - strong

One of the most underrated songwritters

🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 When I discovered Nilsson Schmilsson a few years ago, it was because I kept finding cool and seemingly unrelated-sounding songs all from the same album. This, by the way, includes the infamous "Lime in the Coconut" song, which is, annoying as it is, also maybe the best song on the album, and certainly the bravest, and I will defend (almost) everything about it—a genuinely eerie and wild and funny song. Once I'd found three or so that I loved, I knew it was time for me to listen to the album. Unfortunately—with the DISTINCT exception of "Jump into the Fire"—most everything else didn't quite have the same sauce as the three I'd heard previously. Quite similarly to REM's Green, I think I have so much fondness for the now-four songs off of Nilsson Schmilsson that it radiates outwards to the album as a whole, even though I'm uncertain if I'll ever listen to the album as a whole again. I wouldn't write it off, but for all of Nilsson's delightful weirdness, he's just as much El Cornballer, making the popular Beatles comparisons weak to me. Still great, though. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

So many goodies, so much fun!!!

Overall Rating - 3.75/5 (7.50/10). Harry Nilsson, you crazy bastard, following Without You with Coconut only works because you've written such a catchy album. No two songs on this album have a similar feel. If they weren't so damned catchy, it would feel jarring. The album kinda feels like a day with your highly eccentric neighbor. You never know what the next thing is going to be, but it's probably going to be interesting.

Op zich wel een goede vibe! Het valt op tussen alle 'alt rock' type albums die ik de afgelopen weken van deze app moest luisteren, dus het wordt gewaardeerd 7.5/10

you put the lime in the coconut and drink 'em both together put the lime in the coconut then you feel better

Loved how delightfully different this was.

A nice surprise.

Good album. I hear a lot of Beatles influence.

I actually liked this. I can see some of this growing on me with future replays.

ha sido empezar con gotta get up y ya me ha puesto de buen humor, muy buena experiencia, eso sí, la versión en español no la he podido acabar

Nilsson was a troubled man. I don’t understand how so many people in this profession are so unhappy. Seems like a great way to make a living. Maybe they take things too seriously for their own good. It’s a good album but is it a great album?

This is one of the reasons I enjoy doing this project. I sort of knew the name from here and there. Now I've heard Harry Nilsson and I like his songs. I guess I'll listen to some more.

Great song off the bat. This album is really odd, I kinda of dig it.

Enjoyed this quite a bit more than expected. Didn’t realize the range Harry Nilsson had. He theatric without being annoying, he’s clever and works the humour in without taking away from the music too much. Sure Coconut is kitschy but it’s really fun. What blew me away on this album was the second to last track, Jump Into the Fire. I did not expect such a heavy hitting jam to show up. It was held a weight that the rest of the album didn’t have. Could have ended on that because the last song fell flat for me. 4 stars

For quite a while I was going to say this was transcendent. I was going to forgive Without You as being a song that has suffered from over playing and parody. But what is Coconut all about?

"Tapestry" but for men

quite good album. a bonus star for the title

Someone told me Harry Nilsson was cool when I was like 22 and I don't think I got it but over time I absolutely got it. Love the whimsy and dark druggy undertones.

Gotta Get Up Without You Coconut Jump Into the Fire Si No Estas Tu

Gotta Get Up The Moonbeam Song Down Without You Coconut Jump Into The Fire

I was looking forward to listening to this one, and it didn’t disappoint. A lot of delightful songs and some more upbeat rockers. I’ll definitely be relistening. Also iconic album title.

I’ve tried this a few times before and it found me more receptive this time. I like the beginning of this record especially. I’ve always liked Jump Into the Fire, but added a lot more to the list this time. Even the more sentimental numbers didn’t bug me that much anymore.

I don't like all of them, but these are some great songs. I like the brass, wherever it crops up. Without You may be a bit sappy, but man is it good. Also, today I realized that I'd been thinking of Harry Nilsson and Harry Chapin as the same person.

Really really good. I’m not giving it a 5 purely because, I don’t know, it’s not The Point? Which I think is flawless. This has a couple more bleh songs, including an unnecessary cover of Let the Good Times Roll. But Gotta Get Up, Without You, Jump into the Fire, Coconut, and Down are phenomenal

great so far, like the American equivalent of the Beatles some songs are alright a bit inconsistent I don't like that some songs have no instruments Jump in the fire is the best song

Put the lime in the coconut

Good different but good to listen to

Well you learn something new everyday. Not only is Without You, Coconut & Jump in the Fire performed by the same person but they're all from the same album! I feel like I should've known but I didn't. Oh well. Great album non the less.

So many iconic songs, but I'd say overall this sits at a 3.5 for me. I like it, but Nilsson doesn't quite hit for me. Still bumping for importance.

Grabo un temazo, boracho,un genio el tipo🤌🤌🤌

One of my favorites from Nilsson

Un buen descubrimiento!

unexpected unorthodox bangers on there

some absolute bangers on here

Such a varied album. Wonderful ballads, funny songs, uplifting tones and under one roof. I am pleasantly surprised.

Loved this album!

Fabulous collection of songs, was surprised to know a few of these just from random pop culture when I was fully expecting to go into it knowing nothing

It was a pretty fun album! Lots of diverse sounds and are all very lively and captivating.

Without you is one of the greatest love songs ever written. Also RIP Harry Nilsson he seemed like he had nice energy. he would’ve been fun to talk to

O nome do álbum me diverte. 4/5

Listening to “Nilsson Schmilsson” (what an amazing name by the way) is like watching a highlight reel of some of the most iconic moments in film and tv. “Gotta Get Up” soundtracks Natasha Lyonne’s character restarting the same day over and over again in “Russian Doll”. “Without You” plays as Sharon Stone’s Ginger completely unravels in Scorsese’s “Casino”. “Coconut” provides a wryly funny breath of relief after the blood-soaked tension of “Reservoir Dogs” cuts to the end credits. And “Jump Into The Fire” kicks off what I call the “gun run” sequence of “Goodfellas”. The quick tempo, frantic bass and reverb-soaked vocals are a perfect aural match for the anxiety, panic and (justified) paranoia that Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill is going through as he carts guns and drugs across the city, while dealing with sticky meatball sauces and helicopters. You could spend a lot of time identifying all of the songs that score this part of the movie (I know I have), but it’s Nilsson’s song that is the core song that keeps coming back, matching Henry’s mental state. It’s no coincidence that these are the songs that stick out the most. “Gotta Get Up” is a particular favourite that I’ve had on repeat since rediscovering it, and I’d be very wary and suspicious of anyone who doesn’t absolutely love the song “Coconut”. But I was most blown away by revisiting “Jump Into The Fire”. When the bass kicks in with that descending riff at the end of the extended drum break, is a phenomenal moment in music. You need to crank the volume up to a level that risks structural damage to appreciate it properly, but it’s worth the risk. It turns out Harry Nilsson has been soundtracking some of my favourite moments in film and tv for quite some time. I never knew all of these songs came from the same artist, let alone were on the same album. This might have been my first time listening to this record, but I’d kind of been listening to it in fragments for years.

fav songs: gotta get up early in the morning down jump into the fire melodic, energetic, playful 70/100

it’s very slow but a calming sweet slow, i do like it quite a bit because of how he uses bg vocals to his advantage such as in the moonbeam song. very good!

I loved this. Some good songs, very (maybe just a bit too) diverse, great voice. It's not surprising to learn he was good friends with John Lennon.

I’m pleasantly surprised to find Nilsson Schmilsson on the list. Music from high school days! I listened to the original release (ten tracks). This is the first time I’ve heard the full version of “Jump into the Fire”, since the radio version was cut to three minutes or so. “Let the Good Times Roll” is a cover of the old Shirley and Lee tune. Several ballads here, but still a good variety of music.

Chill and sort of Beatles-esque

Nice easy rock

Liked the first half

Lo amé y me sorprendió mucho escuchar Without you :)

A capa do álbum é bem condizente com as músicas pq realmente parece que foram feitas em casa por um cara de roupão

So many songs on here where I was like “oh that’s where it’s from.” A few that I would not have guessed were by the same person. I thought the album was a lot of fun, can see why people are comparing him to the Beatles. Struggled to take “Gotta Get Up” seriously because it’s the reset music in Russian Doll. It’s used so well in that show though, it really works as a time loop reset song. Fav song: Without You – also liked Gotta Get Up and Down Least fav: I’ll Never Leave You

Enjoyed this. Easy listen. Minus points for him being friends with/ inspiring John Lennon. Specific rating - 4.1 Fav song- living without you Least fav - I’ll never leave you

Great name. It is very one-man-beatles-esk, and sometimes you're like "yeah why did they ever need four of them!" and then sometimes he's drowned out by the full orchestra in the background and you get the appeal of having more voices. Quite a few songs I knew (Gotta Get Up, Coconut, etc) without ever having heard his name before. Favourite song: Gotta Get Up Least: I'll Never Leave You

First song gotta get up is 🔥. Driving along lyrics are top notch. Without you - sounds like Elton John. Coconut sounds like Ween. Can’t believe this is where Gumbrose got Jump into the Fire. The outro to this song is extended bliss.

I approached this with some trepidation, but it was, for the most part, surprisingly good. To the extent that I'd probably listen to it again without a problem. Other than the one huge hit, I didn't really know what to expect, which is presumably why I expected it to me a shmultz-fest or something. But it's really not. The one abomination on it is Coconut which, with modern ears, sounds utterly terrible. It seems to be classed as a novelty song. Which is why I can't work out why it's part way through side 2 of this. That almost demoted this to a 2 by itself. If there had been a repeat it would have been lower. But actually it's good enough to ignore the crime against music and rate this overall as a 4 I think.

Strong

I understand the comparisons to Beatles now; I would say it has worse, cleaner vocals, worse arrangements, but overall it would end up somewhere in the middle of the Beatles discography - it's consistent and just clicks. Great background, driving music.

This album is pretty interesting, I've loved listening to something a little bit more peculiar from the pop(-rock) genre. Of course, there were better songs than others, and I didn't find that enjoyable some parts. But, overall, this album has been such a pleasant listening.

A lot of this reminds me of later McCartney, which makes me wonder about the direction of influence, tho of course it could be mutual. It also felt like a lot of partial song ideas, songs that didn't quite tell a whole story -- wch also feels like McCartney as early as Abbey Road. If I think of it as songs, it's a 2 or 3, but if I think of it more like a notebook, I find a lot to enjoy.

When you think about the basics of rock and roll from its very roots to its evolution in the year 1971 this album accumulates everything wonderful about the genre in only 35 minutes. This record feels very sincere with songs drenched in sadness, joy, and a calmness that only a late night can muster. Fav tracks: Without you, Coconut, The moonbeam song, and early in the morning

Classic of 1970s singer songwriter soft rock. Can see why he was so successful, but he seems to have disappeared from the collective consciousness somehow. Great tunes though and great singing.

I'd never heard of Harry Nilsson but really enjoyed this.

I recognized a few songs off the album, but never heard of the guys before this so it's nice to put a name to the music. Definitely get the 'American Beatle' title and this it is well deserved (especially considering the Beatles' praise for him). Very cool, Schmilsson!

Was hier op eerste gezicht niet bekend mee, maar bleek uiteindelijk toch wat nummers te kennen. Interessante man als ik het zo lees. Jump Into The Fire een knaller van een nummer.

Gezellig plaatje gewoon.

The Nathaniel Rateliff connection is impossible to unhear once you know to listen for it. The warm conversational intimacy, the way the voice carries emotional weight without showboating, the willingness to be vulnerable and playful in the same breath — Rateliff didn’t invent this, he inherited it. Spending time with Nilsson Schmilsson is one of those meeting-the-ancestor moments that the best parts of this project deliver, and it makes you hear both artists slightly differently afterward. Nilsson’s voice is extraordinary on a technical level — a three-octave range deployed with effortless control and genuine feeling. It doesn’t have the ragged, physical quality that makes Rateliff so compelling, but that’s a preference note rather than a criticism. What it has instead is a kind of intimate directness, the sense that he’s singing to you specifically rather than performing at a room. The songs are the real story. The record jumps between styles — early rock and roll, lush orchestral pop, hard rock, intimate piano ballads — with a confidence that feels like genuine range rather than restlessness. The eclecticism that could easily feel scattered instead feels joyful, and the replayability test passes without hesitation.

Moments of brilliance

BUENISIMOOOO

Apparently I've liked/downloaded this album and have no memory! But Gotta Get Up is a fucking classic.

Better than expected. Some old favorites and new gems.

3 stars for a really charming album, and one extra star for the sheer brilliance of Without You and that coconut song.

A tight, quality album!

Everything about this feels like I shouldn't like it as much as I do, it's almost stupid in its silliness, and yet somehow I love it. It's great how this album doesn't take itself seriously at all, which I feel like really gives the chance to explore much more novelty ideas without being confined by having to make something that conforms to a traditionally good song. And that lack of a boundary is perfect for this, as it really does benefit from how fun it is, making it such light entertainment, but still enjoyable even if you are sitting down and really focusing on it.

This is actually great stuff! Good vibes, good voice, nice instrumentals and composition. Definitely one for the list!

Some iconic songs that I did not know were by the same artist. This album continues to subvert my expectations: it is delicate, nuanced, and precise. More often than not, it is also irresistible.

Je ne connaissais que le morceau « without you » qui a du être reprise dans un film. Sympa même si un peu daté.
