8/10
Another funny album where it turns out you know more than you thought: The Coconut song, Without you, the one from Goodfellas and Gotta Get Up. Can see why the Beatles liked him so much. Combines the musical and whimsical in a similar way to some of their stuff. Enjoyed this more than I expected: 4 out of 5 stars
This is cool, kind of like a one-man north american Beatle. Even a timeless hit in there! I can see how this would have been a pioneering record and had an extensive influence on subsequent recorded music projects. Yeeha
this was lovely
Enjoyed this one! Up my alley for sure. Great songwriting.
It was a nice surprise for a first side! Some nice sounds, songwriting and overall enjoyable. Unfortunately, second side is not as good and couple of annoying fillers
Pretty great singer songwriter record from Paul McCartney's favorite American artist! This record is pretty versatile and shows off Nilsson as a jack of all trades. His Without You cover is the best song, while Jump in the Fire is the most exciting.
Fun
Wow, this was a very pleasant surprise. I had no idea who Harry Nilsson was and I don't think I've ever heard any of these songs, but I really liked the album. "Gotta Get Up" was such a strong opening track, and "Without You" was honestly incredible. When the album finished Spotify put on a Spanish version of "Without You", which was good too. This is hard to rate. I'm going to give it a 4/5, but it could become a 5/5 if I listen to it more.
Gotta Get Up, Coconut, and Without You! Didn’t know him, but his work has permeated my pop culture awareness in many ways. Great album.
Wow! What an album. Weird and wonderful.
Love this
I enjoyed that more than expected
Fun album. I knew a few of the songs already, but never heard a full album by him. Really good stuff. 3.5/5
very fun and silly fav song: Gotta Get Up
Man, I love Harry Nilsson a this is by far his best record. Jump into the fire is a stone cold classic
Excellent album. Not sure how I didn't know more about him before
4 Stars (11/15)
Pretty cool actually. Where have I heard track 1 before?
really good album which takes you on this tour of pop music. I just don't love it as much as I used to, as much as I don't want to admit it. 4/5
This was a good album I played during my shift. Wasn’t fully tuned in but I remember enjoying it a lot. Some Beatle-y type of sounds!
Good to hear a piano as a main instrument as not heard as much thies days. First time listining to this album and its now a keep. Worth the listion
Day #4 - 9 Mar 2026 Fun listen, quite a variety of moods. Surprised that “Ken Lee” showed up on this one 😂 3.75/5
I have this album. Love Harry Nilsson.
An album as eccentric and eclectic as it's album art and title. 7/10

Album No. 0172 on my list. I must confess that I had never heard of Harry Nilsson before, so I was curious what kind of album this would be. I liked the nonchalant cover and album title already though, so I had assumed that this would be good. And I was not disappointed in that sense. From what I understand, Harry Nilsson was a troubled character, but he was certainly a pretty good singer and a pretty good songwriter. I like his style on this album. Some songs really stuck with me, he has a good voice, and I can't really telly why, but I just can't help myself but to like this album. Good stuff! I will add "Gotta Get Up", "Early In The Morning", and "Without You" to my playlist (I knew that Mariah Carey covered this song and thought that I had found the original, only to realize that Nilsson had covered the song as well). Anyway, good album, good name ("Nilsson Schmilsson" is really just great"), good stuff! This is why I do the 1001 album generator; I would probably never have discovered this album without it. 4/5 stars!
Solid early 70s pop rock, like a more sophisticated Tom Petty or a more commercial John Cale. The drum solo in "Jump Into The Fire" is a highlight.
I enjoyed this.
for the LAST TIME.. you put the LIME in the COCONUT
Would listen again, wasn’t aware he had written some of these
Good
Pretty great. I've heard this guy before, but from now on I know what songs are Nilsson and which are Schmilsson.
The origins of the “life in the coconut” song have revealed themselves to me at last, like a beacon through the fog.
Very enjoyable, poppy singer-songwriter stuff. Like Alex said, you can hear the Beatle-esque influences in the melodies. Harry Nilsson could write some catchy stuff not gonna lie. Top tracks: Gotta Get Up, Down, Coconut, Jump into the Fire
Harry Nilsson is great in my books. The Beatles influence is easy to hear and he never kept it a secret how much he revered them, especially John. Aside from all that, Nilsson's just got a strong singing voice that I find easy to enjoy. Some of the editing choices here are pretty cool, too.
Really fun overall and without you is a timeless banger. 4.5
😃
So many hits. Might deserve a 5 but I’m feeling stingy.
I really really enjoyed this album!! Without You is an absolute classic. Sadly not quite a 5 because I hate that coconut song What a great find 4 ⭐️
Great record, so many good tunes! Highlights: "Gotta Get Up", "Coconut" and "Let the Good Times Roll"
Coconut
He reminds me a lot of Billy Joel. Once I realized that, I knew I would not have any trouble getting through this album! I didn’t think I’d heard any of his music before, until I heard Without You. I think I had also heard The Coconut Song before. Favorite Songs: Without You, Let the Good Times Roll Rating: 3.5/5
the effortless cool of the album cover should tell you enough about this album - Harry writes and performs with the ease of someone who knows he’s outrageously talented and doesn’t need to prove it. Good enough for The Beatles, good enough for me!!
This album is awesome possum. Wilson Schmilsson it a great dayum name. With some clanger bangers throughout. Coconut schomoconut came on while I was talking a walk down the beach. Lerfect perfect schmune tune for the occasion. 7.5/10
little out of my normal but twas okay favorite song: without you (or driving along)
Really nice
Gotta Get Up was my hyperfixation because Russian Doll, my beloved (Natasha Lyonne if you're here I am single and ready to recreate But I'm a Cheerleader). So obviously when the album opens with such a BANGER, it's trying to relay a message. Driving Along is simple, but yet it draws you in. Also put it in F1 edits now. Early in the Morning feels like Nilsson tried everything he had and it all worked out. The Moonbeam song is just calm and relaxing. Down is a bit forgettable. Without You - better than Celine Dion, worse than the girl on Bulgarian idol. Coconut ILY AND I WOULD DIE FOR YOU. Did not care for Let the Good Times Roll. Jump Into The Fire is funky, enjoyable and drum solo on it fucks. I'll Never Leave You is so gorgeous.
Isto de não poder dar meias estrelas limita um bocado. Acho que não é mau para ser um 3, mas também não é um álbum 4 pela inconsistência estilos e não ter a coesão de um álbum. Mas props por inspirar Beatles
really great listen, harry nilsson representing dressing gown wearers across the world
Album #43: Nilsson Schmilsson - Harry Nilsson Genre (W): Rock, pop Singles: Without You / Gotta Get Up, Jump Into the Fire / The Moonbeam Sing, Coconut / Down I have listened to this album once before. Thoughts: I think Harry Nilsson is a talented songwriter, the blend of pop-friendly yet deep lyricism. Even a song like Coconut is sweet and charming. His cover of Without You is one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Favorite songs: Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Coconut, Let the Good Times Roll, Jump Into the Fire
5 stars for the transition from “without you” to “coconut”
Higher score because Nathan likes it, but great music, very original. Couple of classics.
7/10
Das war geil
Solides Album. Hat Spaß gemacht.
Wasn’t in the right headspace for this when i first out it on. There is A LOT in here to digest in first listen ultimately in a really good way! I also caught the Lennon/McCartney blend that other reviewers mention, a creative playfulness and interesting orchestration. How can ‘Ken Lee’ and ‘Coconut’ come from the same artist? Haven’t got my ears around it enough to choose a fave track yet but early contenders are: Coconut, Down, Old Forgotten Soldier. Was a 3 but rose to a 4 having listened a few times round and getting to know it a bit better. Number of tracks: 16 Fave track: Others: 10/02/26
The guy who sings the Coconut song!! I'm not usually a fan of 70s music but this was a very pleasant surprise. It got slow by the end but I had fun with this one. I feel like his vibe is popular now and he would do well in 2026.
This really is quite good.
Put The Lime In The Coconut 1001 Albums Generator 222 (2/6/2026) In case the name didn't make it obvious enough, Nilsson Schmilsson is a largely pretty funny and non-serious album. Like you can just tell that Harry Nilsson was having so much fun when he was recording these songs (and he must have been high out of his mind when he was recording Coconut). However, right in the middle of this album, we have the surprisingly emotional power ballad Without You, which was pretty stunning on first listen. And of course, this is followed by "you put da lime in da coconut", a similarly emotionally stirring song about mixing lime and coconut. Wow. Also, Jump In The Fire is a crazy psychedelic jam built on a simple bassline taken all the way to its craziest logical conclusion. However, there are some weird detours here, like Early In The Morning, which features only Nilsson's voice over these bouncy electric piano chords. It's pretty boring. I'll Never Leave You is this melodramatic orchestral song that falls flat for me. side note, apparently Nilsson and John Lennon were best buds, which definitely makes sense here. A lot of these songs play like American Beatles tunes. Pretty good album that's really all over the place, but has some stuff I really like. 4/5. Favs: Gotta Get Up Without You Jump Into The Fire Least Fav: Early In The Morning
i love this album. timeless.
Very groovy. Almost... absurdistic in nature. I enjoyed Coconut and Gotta Get Up the most. It's just the right amount of insane. I love how almost simple the music is, but it has these small rhytmical accents that are just SUCH a vibe. Loved it.
Quite a few good song. Wouldn't compare this to the beatles because i like this more lol
More boomer dad shit but I’m here for it
Great
Thought I knew what I was getting from this one after the first song. Boy was I wrong- Nilsson takes things all over the place in terms of genre and style, making it a very interesting listen
i love
Goes a lot of places. Some classics on there, realise I was aware of his songs but not Harry Nilsson. Was fun, enjoyed the ride
A lot of songs I knew but never knew who sang them! Very enjoyable!
This was a very fun listen above the fact that it was well constructed and skill fully done. There was some silliness intermixed with some more serious lyrics and the vocals and tunes were very pleasant. I for real though this was way more modern then '71. I hadn't heard of him before.
4/5 I feel like this is a very well-rounded album. There was a little bit of everything in there, and it resulted in an album full of personality. My favourite is definitely Coconut because it's so silly. I hadn't heard of Harry Nilsson before today, so this was a good find.
The highlights are superb. Then there's the minstrelsy.
Sometimes you must let go your desires and connections towards one person.
Absolutely adore Without You. Moonbeam ice cream
Wasn’t aware of before - enjoyable
1/28/26: The album title and cover give the vibe of an unsure, self-deprecating dweeb. And then his vocals are a powerhouse. 8/10
I really like Down and Without You. This is the coconut guy? NGL love the album cover, adding a star just for that. Also, a sub-40 minute album is always appreciated.
You read the name of this album and you think "this is going to be boring" and then you get blown away. It isn't perfect, there are filler songs here, but Nilsson has a powerful voice and the instrumentation is really good. Also, when Without You came on, I was blown away completely. This is the best version of the song I've ever heard. 4/5
Absolutely loved it. Going to be doing a deep dive on this artist
This is equal parts awful and amazing. The awful parts are kind of fun, though. Despite some truly cringey songs, I kinda loved this. Taking off a star because of Coconut.
(+) strong energetic opening (+) pretty solid car radio song (-) feels really out of place (+) wimsical and mystical (i feel like a fairy) (+) very jukebox vibey (++) absolutely iconic (sad) song (*) i really dont know about this one chief (+++) RAAAAAAAAH THE ORIGINAL (+) pretty energetic guitar on this one (+) pretty good closing song (slow and ethereal)
Funny, clever, great to listen to. Musically varied
It’s good background music
Funny and wonderful. 8/10. Definitely a unique sound. Kind of reminded me of Say Anything?
Great. I knew many of this songs. 4.5/5
Fun! I recognized a lot of these songs. I hope I get more albums like this. Great to listen to while having Sunday lunch with the boys
4 great album!
201/1001 :: Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsso Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ➖ Rating: 7 Listen before you die: Yes Well, this was fun. Dude wrote “you put a lime in the Coconut”? Who knew. Overall I enjoyed this mixed bag or styles and arrangements. Felt like it was a surprise around every corner. Not sure I’ll ever return to this one but glad to hear it. Lastly, shout out to the Lebowski vibes on the cover. Somebody get this man a White Russian!
Good stuff Sounds like The Beatles in a lot of places but not in a derivative way. Hear some definite Lennon/McCartney influences Gotta Get Up - a song I had heard before and liked but never knew the artist Similar with Jump in the Fire - probably my favorite song on the album Also liked Let the Good Times Roll Already knew Coconut from pop culture
This is really fun. Not my favorite thing ever but there's some super dope tracks here. Coconut I'm familiar with and a big fan of, jump into the fire is also a really cool jammy song. Good stuff Harry.
Reminds me a lot of The Beatles, Paul McCartney in particular. 3.75
Better than I expected.
fun schmun! For real this was a good jam all around. It doesnt have anything that really elevates it to amazing but there are a bunch of solid tracks here.
The album named should have tipped me off but I enjoyed how humorous this album was. Catchy songs
Enjoyable. I knew more of the music than I thought.
Oooh, I like this. A couple of classics in there that I didn't know who sang them.
I was surprised to learn that this was recorded in London - it sounds so very Californian. Glorious melodies, and a mix of sunshine vibes and of shadows lengthening in Laurel Canyon.
Realistically would give this a 3.5. Dug a number of songs but wasn’t my favorite album
Really good and fun album, sadly the last to songs weren't that great Fav song: without you 9/10 Worst song: Jump Into The Fire 5/10 Album rating: 8,5/10 4/5
0/10 bekannt 8/10 Beste Songs: down, without you, coconut
PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT 🗣️🔥
The instrumental was so rich, and the lyrics did a great job adding to that. This album was an incredible experience and I think I'll listen to it again someday.
Some absolute bangers on here. Will listen to again. Lots of songs I recognised but didn't know where his
Never listened to this album front to back before. Some real hidden gems.
Solid album title and cover. Several jams off this album I've heard but didn't know who sang them or anything about this guy. I've only ever heard Mariah Carey's version of Without You, so Schmilsson's cover fell flat for me, but overall I really enjoyed this album!
Love the sound of this album - comforting and unique.
surprise banger comvention!
Moonbeam is so good
It was honestly better then I expected
Four Star Boar Star
This album is sneaky good. Everyone's heard coconut from this album, but its not even close to the best track.
i had heard 'gotta get up' in Russian Doll, and loved rediscovering the song. it makes me want to listen to it in the morning as im brushing my teeth and pretend im in some kind of movie. I also didn't know that 'without you' was his song! it's my favourite mariah carey song and turns it its not even her song?? and 'coconut' is so silly funny overall big fan of this and will be returning, bc i love the vibes. there's a beatles vibe to this album, yet somehow feels ahead of its time?
Der va det jo opptil flere sanger æ ikke visste at æ har et forhold til, og ellers mye gøy – har du sett! Alt man lære.
The contrast between without you and coconut is great. This album in many ways sounds like something Paul McCartney would make
The American Beatle. Harry Nilsson is the unsung hero of American pop music. He wrote so many songs that everyone has heard and others have won awards covering. Famously the maestro of the Popeye soundtrack. Harry’s voice and arrangements are so uniquely his that his talent and albums are a treasure to whom ever goes down the rabbit hole. Damn near perfect album
I enjoyed this, it was fun, a few tracks will go into regular rotation.
I enjoyed this more than I thought
It's good. I like side A better than side B, but B is not bad either. Sometimes reminds me of Paul McCartney. Favorite song: Gotta get up
Equal parts fun and depressing!
This was so much fun to listen to had to listen to it three times right away. really like the sound of it. Without you such a banger.
Love this album of bedroom pop gems! All great ones. Favorite tracks- “Gotta Get Up” “ Without You” “Coconut”
Juste pour Without You, cet album vaut son 4 étoiles.
Excellent
A few of the tracks on this album stood out for me, with "Without You" naturally being one of them, and "The Coconut" is a novel track that made me smile. I'm not sure I could really count myself as a convert though, in terms of Harry Nilsson fandom.
Yet another example of “I didn’t know music could sound like this” AND “THATS where this song is from?”
There were some songs i really liked and others that were ok but overall good vibe
greatness
Quirky and weird but I always enjoy listening to it!
I unexpectedly enjoyed this Album
I had no recollection of this artist, a complete blank, and was expecting zero from it - and then…..”hey, I know this song, and this one too, and yeah that one, and hell this is pretty good”. The American Beatle may be a stretch but it’s damned fine.
Listened so long ago and forgot to rate. I remember the at the start I had the thought “I really need to listen to more Harry Nilsson!” and was really enjoying it. I do think some of the songs later were fun albeit a little gimmicky or novelty sounding. But still enjoyed overall
I really enjoyed listening to this, felt instantly familiar, kind of like prototypical jack johnson LOL but definitely less cringe. hated that coconut song i won't like.
The title chosen for an album, is one of the most important choices an artist makes during any creative campaign. It is the first impression the audience gets of their music; can tantalise and excite; and has the power to be a summarising or even defining statement. 'Nilsson Scmilsson' - is a bad joke, but it's perfect. Perfect for an artist who seems to be constantly poking fun at their own craft. And a craftsmen is what Harry Nilsson truly was. Underneath the "one in a million type of voice and talent" is a collection of remarkable songs. Foremost amongst them: 'Without You'. One of the iconic ballads, known for it's heartwrenching and dramatic honesty, and a melody which lifts you up and carries you on its journey, whether or not you wanted to go. But how does this master craftsmen elect to follow their most vulnerable moment? With a novelty track about traditional medicine. You didn't start to think he was being serious did you? Sure, there's some filler on here too, but 'Nilsson Smilsson' is like a classic Pixar film: thoroughly unserious, flippant, harmless fun - but I cried.
high 4 nice one harry
10/10 album name, very fun album and a cracking voice
On the whole, I enjoyed this album. Whenever the songs were getting a little too repetitive for me, they would end except for "Jump Into The Fire" which was the longest song and for me, the worst song. Most known songs: "Without You" and "Coconut". Best song: "Gotta Get Up".
I’m a big fan of Harry Nilsson and a lot of his work, a criminally underrated artist. While he did have a few hits in the 60s, this is his biggest most successful album and it shows with it having how much is packed here From the intro song lamenting glory days being over on “Gotta get up” to the lonesomeness of “early in the morning. The bettering iconic ballad of “without you” to the goofy lil dance number “coconut” then the wild and rocking “jump on the fire”. This album does a good job of moving around constantly offering a different facet of Harry’s music and what he wanted to offer. The remaining tracks are of good quality but don’t pack as much for a punch as the ones mentioned above. With the exception of “moonbeam song and I’ll never leave you, such a powerful closer” Still though, I think this is a great pop album and a great start to the world of Nilsson
Wow, I was aware of some songs from the radio but others not at all. This album was a mix of a lot things. It was actually fun to listen to. His voice is lovely.
I didn’t know he had this many tunes that I knew
Nice for the most part, the rest silly.
Harry Nilsson gets acclaim from anyone who was anyone in the '70s, but has seemingly fallen from the wayside here in the 2020s. And it's a damn shame, as this album shows. Asides from the dumb title, it's a strong album. Everyone will recognize "Without You" via Badfinger, and I had absolutely no idea that this man was responsible for "Coconut", which came so far out of left field that it was in another ZIP code. The album tracks were either solid or better, and like, c'mon. It has "Coconut". Very good album.
If you're reading this and you haven't watched "Russian Doll," DO IT. Also, this is a fun album. I liked his voice, the instrumentation, and his witty lyricism. Would definitely listen again.
I cannot believe this is the guy that did lime into coconut. The whole album was a delight! Eclectic in a way that I enjoyed. There was a lot of unique layering with organ, orchestra especially in I'll never leave you and drums on jump into fire. 4.5
This is so so good. Not only are the vocals, lyrics and performance great, but it’s also so well produced.
Oh, hey, it's the "Gotta Get Up" song guy! While I find that song kinda annoying, the rest of the album was interesting. It has a weirdly uneasy, melancholy kind of vibe hiding under its pop sound. I like don't even know how to categorize what this album is. It's weird, but oddly... good? I've never heard of Nilsson before this, but he's got a nice voice. He's got a bunch of songs on here that I've heard and didn't know were his. The piano and other arrangements were all really quite good. Standouts on this listen were "Early in the Morning," "Coconut" - it's fun the first few times you hear it, then could probably be used as a torture method if you press it too much - and "Jump Into The Fire." Overall, I like the weird feel of this album. Its a good one from a guy I've never really heard of. It's a bit manic and does it's own thing and that gives it all its character. Nilsson Schmilsson is a surprise 4. There are some duds on the album, but they are made up for by how interesting some of the really good tracks are.
A sold album, the very good tracks outweigh the obvious fillers
LOVED most of this album. It sort of petered out at the end, but still so much fun. Almost 5 stars
Really dig this album. A lot of fun and really only peters out at the end
Enjoyed this. Some big hits and the guy’s a legend
Sounds kind of like if Paul McCartney and Randy Newman had a baby. Weird at times, but the talent shines through, he has a pleasant voice when he wants to. The songs were all very enjoyable. Solid 4/5
I’d heard this before. Yea it’s good.
Good album, lots of variety and all enjoyable.
Great. No filler, pure quality. Some big hits(both original and future covers).
Much wider range of genres than I thought there would be - songs have a lot of different vibes bc of that. Only listened to original album not any listed bonus tracks listed in later releases. Kinda a silly album in some ways but has some hits and highs and nothing is horrible (I think coconut is a bit too silly for this and is a skip for me but here we are) I liked driving along the most - would probably give like 3.75 but I’ll round up
this was trending between 4 or 5 to me until coconut which dropped me to the 2 or 3 range. turns out that was just the teaser for jump into the fire which was fantastic. brought it right back up to 4 territory. i cant in good conscious give it a 5 with coconut on there but otherwise this is pretty solid.
This is a solid power pop album. It's not the best entry I've heard in the genre(Big Star's #1 Record is better), but it definitely isn't terrible. The songs are well-crafted, fairly catchy pop tunes, but I don't think Nilsson has that good of a voice. It's not bad in any way, but it's not a masterpiece.
Raised to 4* by one song and despite the other!
Superior word crafting. Loved it
I never realized that Without You and Coconut were performed by the same guy. I was pretty young when this album came out, but I remember hearing Coconut on the radio and thought it was goofy, while I loved the song Without You. Quite the odd paring of those two.
I forgot how interesting Coconut is, but the rest of the album was pretty and cool
I must admit I am a fan of this guy and so am very happy to listen to this though it doesn’t contain his great hit a cover of Fred Neil’s Everybody’s Talking from the film Midnight Cowboy. Tracks like Coconut really showcases the zany side of him. His version of Without You, written by Badfinger, is also loved. Some of the tracks were less good. Hence the 4 rating
This album was way better than I thought it was going to be.
Didn’t expect to be familiar with any of these songs but there was a few and it was really fun overall. 4 stars
Interesting album
Love it, an amazing voice and all the songs blend nicely into each other Fav song - Without You 4/5
Decent
Enjoyed!
J’aime les Beatles
Fantastic album. Definitely feel some Beatles vibes here. Definitely a precursor to the 70s soft era.
Really enjoyed this album. Without You was one of my Mum's favourite songs, so a bit of a nostalgia fest.
Surprised to enjoy so many songs beyond Without You. Self-written songs are beautifully crafted and original. The covers are amazingly performed.
> The Beatles I enjoyed this way more than expected
Listens like a musical from the early '70s Good to know that the transition to "I used to be able to stay out all night and now I'm tired" hasn't changed, regardless of the generations lol Also really interested to see that we're in a musical time where bridges have been ditched again and songs were shorter, but this album shows that songs weren't always in the 3-5 minutes format. Really like his vocals, even if I'm not in love with all the songs. OH MY GOD HE SANG WITHOUT YOU?!?!?!?!?! Dear god, this song is heartbreak in music FOLLOWED BY COCONUT?!?!?!?! Okay I almost didn't listen to this album
I'm actually not quite sure how to rate this one. It was quite good but also a little weird! I'm vaguely familiar with Harry Nilsson, knowing the two hits from this album and a favorite song of mine "Everybody's Talking at Me," but this is my first time listening to a whole album of his. I love how eclectic this album is. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite David Bowie albums, Hunky Dory. But the downside is I just don't vibe with some of the songs. It's probably a solid 4 to me but leaning more toward the lower end than high because although I enjoyed it, I don't see myself really returning to it like so many other 4 and 5 star albums I've reviewed.
Knew more songs on it than I expected, overall not bad!
Boozy
His seventh album. Rock / Pop. Gotta Get Up and Driving Along are real nice opening tracks. Down is also pretty good. Without You is a great ballad. The production on this album is brilliant. Coconut is delightfully bonkers. Jump Into The Fire is cool ! A really good album !
nice
#747. I accidentally fucked up and put the coconut in the lime. 4/5: I hope I'll be ok.
I liked the coconut song it was funny and it was also funny that they were songs about the morning. Honestly I liked this one it was cool.😎
Schmilsson makes me feel good. It is a super sweet and topical vibe for first thing in the morning. Singalong bliss.
Funky,far out album
This album is such a vibe, it’s like the Beatles and pet sounds had a baby and this is the result, almost pure perfection and I could listen to it almost anywhere, the one downside that is keeping me from giving it the perfect score is the last song, imo it doesn’t fit into the album, but besides that a great album
After a long run of truly mediocre albums, Schmilsson pops up. This is great pop-rock. Some of these tracks are fives, but as a whole the album is a solid 4/5.
Nice
This album is jam packed with every song ever featured in every movie ever.
JUMP INTO THE FIRE
"Without you" and the spanish version are incredible. "Gotta get up" should be the default alarm. 10/10 songs, 8/10 album.
hey…one of these songs WAS on the shaun white snowboarding wii game soundtrack! i’m kind of fascinated by the range (some might say “randomness”) of these songs together. some are straight classic cornball pop (’gotta get up’), some are extremely beautiful and moving (’the moonbeam song’), some are incredibly goofy and bizarre in a way that is undeniably catchy and enjoyable to listen to (’coconut’), and some are just plain cool and rockin and almost sexy…? (’jump into the fire’). it gave me a sense of aesthetic whiplash through the whole course of the album but i certainly wasn’t bored and i did have fun. he has a really flexible voice. this guy is a character!!! fav tracks: the moonbeam song; jump into the fire
I actually really enjoyed this. Harry nilsson I’m sorry I wasn’t familiar with your game… “Without you” ruined permanently by how hard it got outdone by Mariah but these songs were very beautiful and kind of an interesting spin on the classic 70s sound I associated him with.
Another one gone too soon. The happy go lucky Harry Nilsson! A gem and a Lennon/McCartney fave.
Banger after banger to be fair Can't liiiiiiiiiiive Living is without youuuuu
I cant live, if living is without Harry Nilsson.
Awesome singing, very clear Without you and coconut best tracks Weird going from one to another Lyrics could be a bit more complex
Kinda really dug this. Will listen again
Never heard of this guy, didn't know he sang the coconut song, but really enjoyed this.
Great album name. And some tunes on here. Simpsons: Yes
Not sure why he named it that but the songs are good.
Official rating is 4.55. I really do cherish Schmilsson and that vaudeville charm. Eccentric, funny, and yet still heartfelt...Nilsson that offbeat pop master at his absolute best.
I only knew Nilsson for the cheesy ironic-karaoke Without You. The rest of this stuff was way better. Surprisingly enjoyed the album. Its sound like he enjoyed making it too. And drinking buddies with John Lennon. Extra star for that.
Didn’t expect to enjoy this after judging the cover
It’s real nice! I like how some of these sound like demos, really fits the album cover where he couldn’t even bother to get out of his jammies
It's October and you continue to water your hanging baskets because you want the joy to last just a little bit longer. This album goes down as easy as water in a bone dry million bells.
lime in the coconut jumpscare This album is fun, had a good time listening to it. Some banger songs. My favourite's Jump Into the Fire. A lot of the songs aren't quite my taste, but it's doing what it's doing well.
Surprisingly good. So that’s where the coconut song comes from. Somber in the back 2/3. Thought i wouldnt like it after the first 1/3 and the cover. Maybe too close to my own aesthetic. 3.5 rounds up to FOUR!
Surprisingly excellent. That fucking coconut song was actually good, too.
Nilsson definitely earned his moniker of “The American Beatle”. This album was solid throughout (with the exception of the coconut song).
a few songs that I really liked, a few that I recognized
Beautiful album!
Love Nilsson happy to remember he exists
This album is a jauntier and more fun pop album than I was expecting. It's catchy and an enjoyable listen. Didn't realize "Without You" and "Coconut" were from this album. Those are certainly iconic tracks!
NICE
Listens: 3 or 4 Standout Tracks: Gotta Get Up, Without You I had a big smile on my face, hearing Gotta get Up as the first track on this album. I have seen Netflix's Russian Doll, and Gotta Get Up is a prominent song throughout at least the first season, as the main character progresses through a series of time loops, trying to figure out what's going on. And so when I was able to put an artist/album to a song, it was a nice feeling. Sure, I could have looked it up, but where's the fun in that. Anyways, throughout the album, I was constantly thinking "this sounds kind of Beatles-esque". The thought was on several songs, but ultimately fleeting, like a dream half-remembered on waking. Coconut is pretty bizarre. The lyrics aren't anything particular, but I like how the song slowly escalates and escalates and progresses until its finally hits a crescendo and then sort of just fadessss out. Weird. There's a diversity in the range of instruments and styles presented in 35 minutes, and I think it holds up. Its a little serious, a little zany, and 100% authentic.
Vilken härlig albumtitel! Och nästan lika härlig musik.
Ime mi je znano in dozdeva se mi, da mi bo prvi komad poznan... O, ja, direkt ta komad k sm mislna, da bo k sm vidla naslov "Gotta Get Up". (Aaa, gugl pomagal - iz serije Russian Doll mi je poznan!) Sledita dva dost kjut, kratka, simpl komada. (Že ob prvem poslušanju sm dobla mal Beatles vajb, specifično McCartney & gugl pravi, da je bil Nilsson znan kot ameriški Beatle.) "The Moonbeam Song" in "Down" sta huda. (In "Down" je ta komad k mi je prej res priklical McCartneya po Beatlih v glavo.) O moj bog. Zato mi je ime znano. "Without You"! Oh. Ful razgiban album, sicer. Predvsem zadnja polovica "Jump Into The Fire" je insanely dobra. Po pa spet safr balada, z random banjom in, hm, citrami? In, konec. Kratek, a impresiven.
Well, I liked It a lot!!! E nem esperava, fui surpreendida porque não conhecia quase nada de Harry Nilsson!
Overall: 8/10 I love listening to a pop album that has banger after banger yet it's not afraid to get a little weird. Harry had an amazing voice that fit these songs perfectly and I found myself amazed by the production of the album. Really fun and I'd recommend. Fav Song: Coconut
Unexpectedly charming
some songs are quite basic but i love their bangers like without you, coconut oder early in the morning
Gotta Get Up and Driving Along - nice start. Without You - absolute banger. Jump Into The Fire is great and rocks with an admirably insane mix. I'll never Leave You could have been Brian Wilson. That's not bad - the rest is less fun but has enjoyably deranged moments.
A legendary album. Some of these songs have been favorites for years, not 100% sure if I listened to the whole album before but I may have. A top tier album in my opinion and I love the cover with Nilsson's outfit.
Excellent.
I really enjoyed this - it felt more like a compilation than an album as the songs seemed to bounce around genres etc but yes good!
YOU PUT THE LIME IN DA COCONUT
Some good tracks on this one.
Short and sweet with a nice mix of fun, upbeat songs and slower ballads. Let the Good Times Roll and Jump Into the Fire were my favorites. Coconut gets a ton of hate and has a reputation for being a bit of a meme. Is it repetitive? Absolutely, and on top of that there’s only a single chord in the whole song, but the way that it slowly builds as the song progresses is endlessly entertaining to me.
she put a lime in the coconut
My boyfriend will never understand the cultural relevance of “Coconut” because he hasn’t watched Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock make margaritas and dance to it in Practical Magic.
4/5 Solid, not my thing however. Glass of warm milk
The singer tries to emulate both Lennon and McCartney a bit. Classic tracks from the 70s. Favorite track: Early in the morning other picks: Gotta get up, Without you, coconut, junp into the fire
Russian Doll song!
A strong contender for the greatest cover version ever here with Without You You can easily imagine the rest of this being sung in Lennon or McCartney’s voice and it fitting right in on a Beatles album
Original in a good way
What a classic album with Beatles vibes. Had no idea some of the songs weren’t Beatles. A complete album
Classic. Real Good. 4*
never heard of him but certainly heard the first track (and it's a great song) in some tv series. a good album despite its name
This was an album I couldn’t have predicted. I only knew of Harry Nilsson for his cover of “Everybody’s Talkin’” from Midnight Cowboy so I was expecting something similar. And in some aspect it was, but other parts of it were goofy in a way that was really enjoyable. And stfu, he’s the guy who wrote “You put the like in the coconut and shake it all up”?? Fucking GOAT right there. Favorite tracks: Early in the Morning, Without You, Coconut
Dams. So good. Everything good about early seventies pop rock.
I kind of didn't really expect to like this one that much, but it was pretty good! If I were doing half stars, I might give it three and a half, but I'll round up to four.
Huh, wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Was honestly expecting it to be more generic UK junk the author liked. Plus Coconut is on here! I can see this definitely deserving to be on here.
I was previously familiar with some of the songs on here but not the entire album. This album showcases some great songwriting. Without You in particular is an excellent song that elevates the whole album. Coconut is fun. There's not a dud on here. I would listen again.
Gotta Get Up // Without You // Coconut // Jump into the Fire //
Super good, easy 70s rock. 4 star. The lime in the coconut
I have the sneaking suspicion this whole album was included because of “Without You”… and rightly so! What a banger. The rest of the album is good as well. 4/5
Despite hearing the name for years and knowing “Without You” I’ve never actually listened to Harry Nilsson before. Great songs, and now a new rabbit hole for me to go down.
Someone likes the Beatles, lol. Pretty good album though. Didn't know Coconut was written by a white man, so I learned something.
Wonderfully wonky, beautiful, and diverse. 4.5/5
The feel here is light-hearted, fairly acoustic, free. Reminds me of Fleetwood Mac's 1975 and 1977 albums. An upbeat, surprisingly complex opener in Gotta Get Up, featuring a slew of fun instruments including the trombone (among other brass) and the accordion. Lots of chords squeezed into a two-minute ditty. Most of the tracks after this one are very musically simplistic, like the bluesy two-chord Early in the Morning (featuring nothing but vocals and soft keyboard) and the repetitive, one-chord, seven-minute Jump Into The Fire. Without You sounds very much like early-70s Elton John (original Candle In The Wind, perhaps). Nice use of strings and backing vocals. Everything is either light-hearted or an obvious interlude between the light-hearted tracks. I definitely appreciate the adherence to one of the most important aspects of an album: the "album experience". (Ups and downs in mood and texture, essentially.) I did *not* expect to recognise any of these songs. So you can imagine my surprise when Coconut began playing and Nilsson started belting out the absolute banger of a line "Put de lime in the coconut, you drank 'em bot' up". And heck, I knew the song! It's not exactly a masterpiece (more of an earworm, if anything) - but I'll be darned if it isn't a cult-classic household piece of art. And speaking of art: I love this album cover art. A low-quality B&W pic of the Nilster himself, half-awake wearing his trusty bathrobe and (presumably) nothing else. With "Nilsson Schmilsson" written in the Pet Sounds font in the top left, so you know it's a good album. (Wahoo.) I couldn't have described the music's sound better if I tried. Unfortunately, I can't take this record seriously. The goofy faux-dramatic I'll Never Leave You closing off the album, the musical anonymity of Driving Along (anybody could have written that one), and the existence of Coconut are a few reasons for this. 4/5 Key tracks: Gotta Get Up, Down, Without You
Відразу повага за назву альбому, мій тип гумору. Раніше цього виконавця не чув, хіба що першу пісню з нетфлікського серіалу. Класний альбом, місцями десь дуже нагадує пізніх бітлів, що для мене в принципі плюс. На альбомі є цікаві повороти: той же Coconut чи Jump into the Fire.
A few tunes I didn’t realize was him. Kind of sounds like if sergeant pepper was only written drunk instead of psychedelics
Just a fun album. Good sounds. You can see why the Beatles liked him.
Very enjoyable, definitely hearing that Abbey Road vibe, and excellent name. Jump into the Fire is a banger, but I'll Never Leave You the highlight, beautiful tune.
Badass. Legend
Just fun all the way through.
My knowledge of Harry Nilsson prior to this was mostly centered around his time spent with John Lennon during the lost weekend and his cover "Without You" by Badfinger. I've dipped a bit into his stuff before but didn't really get much of an impression, I guess, because I don't recall my impression. That said, I thought this album was beautiful. Harry's voice was remarkable. Tons of texture and depth and character, insanely dynamic. The songs themselves are mostly pretty great, too. "Jump into the Fire" is the best new song I've discovered on this journey so far. I'm totally interested in listening more and diving deeper.
Really enjoyed this. Used to work in a record shop, sold loads of this and never listened to it once. Don't judge an album by it's cover eh?
I am surprised I've never listened to this album before. It has a few hits and some bangers. I've definitely seen the album artwork before, but after listening to this I'm going to be adding Nilsson to the rotation.
Apart from one or two obvious tracks, this had passed me by and that is a shame as it is a wonderfully eclectic mix of songs, all uniquely delivered. Stand out track for me is Jump Into The Fire!
tenalum meeega buja bardzo dobry podobny do gillego joela
Nice album, didn‘t know he‘s the original Composer of „Without You“!
There's a couple of tracks here I'm not crazy about, but overall the highs are really high, Without You and Jump Into The Fire being classics in 2 different genres. The variety on the album is really impressive, the guy knows how to write a pop song. Happy giving this a strong 4.
A marvellous set of songs and a fascinating man. I enjoyed this a lot and there's plenty to enjoy.
Nilsson succeeds in combining emotional ballads and hilarious tracks, never losing his musicality throughout. The excellent instrumentation can bring you to tears alone. There are very few songs which can captivate me without lyrics, and this album has at least two of them. Even better than the instruments, Nilsson's voice is undoubtedly excellent, and subjectively one of the greatest to touch a microphone. Although the lyrics are not particularly provocative, they offer more than enough to think about, and doubtlessly function seamlessly with the atmosphere created.
not bad
Love this, I obviously had heard "Without You" before, but was unaware an album like this existed. I lack the words and knowledge to detail with technicality what kind of music this is, so by now I can only say I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Pas l'album du siècle, mais quand même un truc sympathique.
Top tier. Such good production and the songwriting is amazing of course. I feel really inspired by his writing style.
Loved it
Solid songs, definitely 70s in most measures.
"Without you" einer der schönsten Love Songs die es gibt. Alles in Allem ein sehr schönes Album
Just an amazing album overall, super fun listen. Way more dynamic than I thought it would be. Ik Without You is the most popular and acclaimed song on here, but there were def songs I enjoyed more. The moonbeam song was actually so mf beautiful and driving along is getting put into the rotation. Coconut is such a funky song, can't tell if I love it or hate it. Overall super solid. 8.4/10
Just okay.
I am so happy that I was able to hear the original song of coconut. After hearing that on a commercial years ago, it’s been stuck in my head ever since. I thought this album was great. A lot of diverse music in here that conjured into a fun to listen to album.
This was a lot of fun. Going in I knew of Harry Nilsson but the only song I knew was his cover of Without You (which I only just learned was a cover). Anyway, he’s a great musician and this album is very good
I really liked this one , genuinely great to listen to as a whole Fuckass coconut stuck in my brain
Very Beatles-y. Ranges from 70s pop - think Neil Diamond - to pretty straight blues. Again, stays very Beatles-y throughout. Nilsson has a very nice voice and delivery. Coconut is the only song I was really familiar with due to its use in liquor ads recently, although that usage doesn’t do the song justice. Without You is the hit from the album - I can hear Paul McCartney performing this ha. Other notables include Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, Early in the Morning, Coconut, Let The Good Times Roll, Jump Into The Fire.
I'm at least familiar enough with Harry Nilsson such that I recognize the big three singles off this particular album, along with another single of his, "One", which is indeed the loneliest number you'll ever do. He's one of those long-past songwriters that most people don't recall until you bring up one of his singles that have been used in various soundtracks, and then people go, "Oh, he's THAT guy." With that said, how does Nilsson Schmilsson hold up decades later? I'd say this album is pretty solid. It's the kind of slightly experimental pop-rock that I can get behind, with such swerves in compositions that I can see why he was called the "American Beatle". Between the piano-driven ragtime bouncing of "Gotta Get Up" and "Down", the chill guitar strumming on "Driving Along", the Caribbean-themed instrumental influences on "Coconut" and his cover of Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five's "Early in the Morning", his transformative, near-operatic ballad rendition of Badfinger's "Without You", and the epic seven-minute rocker "Jump into the Fire", there's a great amount of variety that Nilsson utilized across his covers and original compositions. I wouldn't say all of the tracks blew me away, as aside from "Jump into the Fire", the album does wind the momentum down towards the end. But I can hear the craftsmanship and dedication by Nilsson, the backing personnel, and producer Richard Perry, and cannot ignore how good this album ended up. At the end of the day, Nilsson Schmilsson is a decent record from a man who deserves to be remembered.
Similar to Randy Newman, Nilsson wrote lots of kid tinged songs such as Cuddly Toy and Me and My Arrow, but he also wrote gorgeous simple melodies with songs such as Sleep Late My Lady Friend. Compared with earlier albums this one has a goofy anything goes way about it. Coconut came out when I was 13 but I never liked it, didn’t make much sense to me. If you want a more conventional pop album listen to The Pandemonium Shadow Show.
Didn't realize the singer of Without You wasn't a one-hit wonder! Tracks to Track: Gotta Get Up
Loved this more than I expected?
Coconut song was kind of crazy but these were fun jams! 3.7
Love u Nilsson <3
Didn't think I knew this artist. Turns out I was familiar with multiple songs, and I enjoyed them all. The songs I didn't know, I still enjoyed and while I don't need to right this minute, I'd gladly listen to the whole album again, maybe even purchase it.
Ya de por sí, Without You es un temazo para la historia de la música, pero el resto de las composiciones y el feeling que le pone Nilsson me dejó clarísimo el porqué tuvo tantos éxitos. Padrísimo, escucharé más de sus álbumes.
The first song was my wake up song for years, album holds together well
This album has some HITS on it. Had no idea. Without You is one of those songs that’ll stick with me forever, so even that being on here… Fun musician overall. Probably a 4 tbh
Nilsson is someone I’ve obviously been aware of for a long time, but save for his versions of songs that others have covered, not someone i’ve (knowingly) heard much by. The album opens steady enough. Both of the opening tracks breeze through and suited the stroll from the bakery it soundtracked. Early in the morning continues the smooth approach but as the lyrics suggest through in a touch of blues, which i enjoy. Down introduces a funky bit of piano and brass which switch things up a bit more and put me in mind of some of John Lennon’s 70s output, albeit vocally probably closer to Macca. I always thought that Nilsson wrote Without You, so was surprised to discover it’s actually written by two members of Badfinger. Nilsson’s version however is great and manages to have that grandeur to its delivery without the histrionics of latter versions. My subconscious knew there would be more Nilsson tracks that i’d know and sure enough Coconut proves that point. The quirkiness providing an interest contrast to Without you. The funk of Jump into the fire is irresistible. It’s another track that shows that Nilsson really did have range.
7/10 - A short but really cool album, a huge variation of tracks on it, would deffo listen again
A lot of the hits are over played but an enjoyable beatlesque album 4*.
Oldies
Me gustó, y por supuesto amé el primer tema por razones obvias (Muñeca Rusa) Nota: 3.9
You Gotta Get Up and Jump Into the Fire on this album. Just Let the Good Times Roll.
Harry Nilsson is the American Beatle! So many good songs on this, maybe one of the most underrated artists? Glad this site introduced me to him.
This album is a ton of fun. It’s all over the place in all the best ways.
#109 - Wow I'd never heard of this guy but these are all bangers
Love! The fell away towards the end, but it may grow on me with a few more listens.
