Reviews (page 14 of 14)

"Jump into the fire" is pretty cool, but the rest is a bit meh

Nothing very compelling. It seemed like an average pop album. I give credit for the influence of different cultures on some songs.

Ehh turned it off

Very traditional and too-much-common pop song from the 70s/80s. Maybe he was a pioneer somehow at that time, but today is one of the blandest music I've ever listened to.

Like the The Beatles or Paul McCartney but annoying. Best song: Early in the Morning (I dig the bluesy vibe). Worst song: Coconut (just awful, play on repeat to make your neighbors question their sanity).

I respect him, but I just can’t get into the song writing. Too much like Randy Newman.

this was yucky.

I know this is an important album, and the musicianship is good. Just not my cup of tea. 2

He hung out with the Beatlies ddin't he. So no surprise the best of this sounds like early solo McCartney. The worst of it sounds like....Without You. Being less than generous because that song is unlistenable to, it's a two.

lime in the coconut is from this album lmao didnt really get into the rest of it not even sure how to classify it genre wise

I actually really like his voice, although I think it was much better used on another album – a little touch of Nilsson in the night. My folks had that album and I always liked his vulnerable timbre and that little warble. If that had been the album of choice, I would’ve been a little kinder but I just found this a bit of a bore. It would have been a 2.5, slap bang in the middle, but I’m all Nilssoned out.

(Happy Halloween) You put da lime in da coconut. Don't care. It's boring and I didn't win the Binding of Isaac run I was doing while this was playing in the background. More like Nilsson Smellshit. Ha. Great album commentary as usual. On a more serious note: I don't know about this one. Nothing caught my attention here except for the "Coconut" song, which is a delightful level of stupid that I'm a sucker for. I don't even get the Beatles comparisons.. just because it's pop from the late 60s - early 70s doesn't immediately make this guy the "American Beatles". Also as a sidenote: I wish I got something spookier for Halloween. Y'know? Give me "Tinderbox" by Siouxsie & The Banshees, any Joy Division album.. Or Crazy Frog's 2009 cult-classic "Everybody Dance Now". Now that's a terrifying one.

KEN LEEEEE. Diba diba dout uuu.

I've heard and re-enjoyed "Gotta Get Up". It's a good upbeat song that gets you ready for... not a great album.

Second half is better but don't know why I'd listen to this over dozens of other singer songwriter albums

Didn’t do much for me and Without You made me think of Peep Show, but quite enjoyed the rhythm section and riffs on Jump Into The Fire. That’s about it. Seventies indulgence.

Ken Leeeeeee! tulibu dibu douchoo.

Not bad but not for me

Strange liked the first song the rest was a bit like weird pop. Was ok but never really got there again.

several songs

Another irrelevant album (and a bit cringe with that coconut song) that is here due a single song. This time it ain’t even the original one (this is the second time I encounter such situation during this list). Well, without you is a good song then.

Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Without You Date listened: 11/04/22 Harry Nilsson seems to have forged a career out of novelty songs and popularising covers of recent minor hits by other artists. 'Nilsson Schmilsson' indeed.

2/5 not good.

Early in the morning

Tuntuu kamalan vanhalta olo kun noi Gotta Get Upin sanat nappaa näin. Early in the morning kans hauska neppailu. 2/5

Buen disco

I liked (and knew) Without you and coconut. The rest of the songs sound uninteresting and tiring. Kept zoning out and having it as background noise, even if I was actively trying to listen to it.

Coconut was lit, Gotta Get Up was very Russian Doll. 5.5/10 overall.

Had some redeeming qualities, but it’s really just 35 minutes of pure cheese, 4/10

Some belters.. some real cringe tracks.

October 14, 2021 It was fine but I didn't enjoy it that much with the exception of "Without You".

Harry Nilsson's 7th album and his most successful one. It's a rock album with 3 famous singles - one being a number 1 hit. The music sounded pretty mainstream, so much so that I believe I have heard this music before and don't remember it. This was an awesome album and definitely deserves to be included on the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list.

Hilpeähkö

Wanted to like, but no. Just wish you weren't so fuckin awkward, bud.

Sounds like George Martin is all over this or this is revolver era throw aways. Had some recognizable classics and slick ballad writing but the vocal didn’t endear me much.

Melodic and very Beatlesy at times but not an album I’d go back to. Recognised about 3 or 4 songs, had no idea they were Nilsson. He definitely wouldn’t get away with Coconut today.

New to this chap but seem to know quite a few tracks on the album. A pleasant enough hour spent.

A few good songs, otherwise, gets quite boring quickly.

Ho Hum...another uninspiring album full of folky/pop tracks. Apart from the well known commercial classics off this album there isn’t too much here I’m keen on. In saying that, the tracks released as hits are not really my cup of tea anyway. As you can probably guess...I’m not rating this one very highly. 2 Stars

Nothing incredibly exciting, almost a little boring at times. Wasn't sure what to expect but didn't really enjoy this. 1 seems too harsh so I'm giving it a 2

Saved Prior: Coconut Saved Off Rip: Gotta Get Up Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I always get this guy mixed up with Andy Kaufmann. No idea why, but I do. In terms of the music, eh. Love "Coconut" tho.

Not my cup of Joe.

It was fine. I liked a few songs

Definitely a solid album with button that really called to me

Some classic songs. I don't feel compelled to listen to it again.

You can really tell he’s going for a Beatles vibe, but he’s just not good enough of a singer and doesn’t have enough energy in the beat to make it a very good impression.

lime in di cocinuh

i thought his voice was annoying

Love how the first few songs are about the morning and so he’s wearing a bathrobe in cover shot (possibly smoking a roach clip). This music is way too corny for my taste but Harry seems like someone I want to be friends with. I think he was having some fun making this.

Tracks: Down, Let the good times roll, Jump into the fire.

Had never heard of this guy, was expecting US folk rock... it kinda was in places, but also more poppy like the Beatles or Beach Boys as well. Was pretty harmless, but I will never listen to it again. Not honestly bad, but even now 2 hours later I can't remember anything beyond that. 2/5.

Muito ruim

nesamone

John Lennon and Paul McCartney are known to have named Harry Nilsson as their favorite American musician. It's unclear whether this reflects their vanity or whether the Beatles were simply poking fun at the artist, as this most famous album of his sounds identical to the late Beatles, from the melodies and arrangements to the overall mood. Previously, audio pirates would take obscure songs that sounded like the work of some famous band, burn them onto a disc, and sell them as lost album or rarities — that would have worked here. Frankly, the copy turned out poorly. The artist doesn't understand what he wants; half the album sounds like songs from children's shows, then whiny ballads begin, then some bad hard rock, and most importantly, none of it is memorable. I don't argue that Harry was apparently a humorous guy, judging by the album title and its cover, but he didn't quite succeed with music.

I had to skip Coconut. I WANTED to skip most of the album. How can such a short album feel so long?

Started off strong but am finding it increasingly cheesy and overwrought. There's something about this production and instrumentation that ain't doing it for me. Coconut is painful. Why do I hate the way all these instruments sound? Appropriately named album.

Not for me

Me: Why is this on the list? *side B starts* Me: Oh... Yeah, no.

Favorite: Fucking none

just kinda bad

this is a fairly inoffensive album I'd probably give a two or three but Coconut is such a godawful song I'm docking it down to a one I dunno man this just isn't for me. a lot of what I hate about solo Beatles, some novelty songs, some crooning, gets a little Randy Newman in places, very singer-songwriter-y but with no real emotional heft or a hook to grab me actually you know what, it's not just Coconut. I don't like this. it'd still be a two probably because yeah, he sounds great and the music is technically competent, but we put the lime in the coconut and the score goes down

Boring and I found the coconut song super annoying

Really hard to imagine that this album was voted to be top 1000 list of 70s albums. This was a nerve-wracking album.

Weird mix of pop and schlager-like music, bluesy tracks and the obligatory ballads. Not at all to my taste.

Didn’t finish it, not my style I thought it was slightly boring

I don’t know much about this guy beyond his name, but other than Without You this is pretty embarrassing.

stop with the boomer shit lol

currently at song 5, legitimately feels like music for children so far big revelation at without you "oooooh, it's that song", not bad really okay, straight downhill from there, no idea what they were going for with that record song 9 has the old fashion "pseudo prog" trick of repeating the same riff over an increasingly incoherent drum beat forcing myself through the last track right now okay, a lot of people seem to love this record but it's just not for me I'm sorry 2/10

This is not for me. Some ok tracks on here but borders on novelty music

'You put the lime in the coconut' is the type of earworm that makes you wish you were dead, simply for remembering it's existence.

This was really not my thing it was a lot a sappy singing and honky tonk piana playin and he did a accent on coconut 0/5

Fair play that’s one of the worst things I’ve listened to in a long time. Had no idea Nilsson wrote Without You, but I genuinely DESPISE that song, so the fact I hated this record makes a lot of sense. Is it a serious album or a parody? I can’t tell and I don’t think it can either. Also that two minute instrumental ending to Jump Into the Fire? Horrible. If I ever hear this record again, it won’t be through choice.

Likes: production quality was very good Dislikes: tinker-toy instrumentation, whiny vocals, boring melodies, adlib vocals done too often and not letting the tracks breathe, painfully slow and tedious arrangements Overall, I hated this. The only reason I finished is the short length. And even then I had to force myself through it multiple times when I just wanted so badly for it to end. It’s like the musical equivalent of your grandma’s kitschy porcelain tchotchke collection - sure, it’s not inherently offensive, but why would anyone like it?

Wasn't too impressed

This is not for me and I’ll leave it at that

Alright something new that i have never heard. Pop rock, early 70s. The man(the artist) on the cover looks like another victim of drugs and hippie plague. I have listened to it twice. Nothing special and standing out. Ok for background noise no offense

Fuck off

One massive hit and a bunch of other easy listening. I guess this has been influential but I found it dull

Ooh… not really my genre i think. Yup and i was right listen 2 2 songs and i was alrd out the door

what if we ripped off the beach boys 5 years later and made it shit. lime in de coconut top 10 worst songs i've ever listened to

Lime in the coconut... yeah I'm good thanks

Not for me. 1/5

Influential my ass. Straight up boring with nothing but lame lyrics and hardly any instruments. Just quiet, slow and uninteresting.

I don't have time for this lame music, sorry

To be honest non mi é piaciuto granché però apprezzo le vibes lovey dovey di alcune canzoni

Yeah I’m good on this one

white boy basic ballads were good without you is the best song

Sorry barely listened and didn't like what I listened 1 star

don't like

I genuinely thought I’d done this album before, but maybe that was wishful thinking. I don’t really like Nilsson and this hasn’t changed my mind. Also, very disjointed with the ballads, the novelty song and the pretending to be The Who one. Now I’ve listened to it all, the drum and bass segment of Jump Into The Fire almost deserves a star of its own.

Nothing about this album stuck out to me

Like that coconut song

Rough, like crazy rough. Love Scott Ian, not a fan of Anthrax

Nothing special.

No. Not my type of music. Boring lyrics, too tame of a sound...

Not for me.

Didn’t listen to this shi

1/10. Not my style of 60’s/70’s

OMG! No good!

It started off great, then it went south fast. I was actually liking the first song a ton and felt like it had a Beatles vibe to it. But song 10 I wanted to pour bleach into my ears and cry in the corner to make it stop. Few songs were familiar to me and have heard before. Please let today be better.

I don't think I've ever heard any Harry Nilsson besides the obvious one before and I imagine if I listened to this record again in 6 months i would say the same thing

Great voice but I find this incredibly boring. Favorite Track: Coconut

Pink Floyd what have they done to you...

Not my favorite.

not a fan, but now I know who sings the Coconut song

My aunt loved this album and I heard it about a million times. I never liked it and I saw no reason to subject myself to it again

In the immortal words of Jon Lovitz, it stinks! The best song is in Spanish, and that was more for comedic purposes. Not for me, will never listen to again.

Sorry just didnt like this one at all. WTF is the Coconut song!!

I liked "Let the good times roll", not any other songs. I couldn't identify with the lyrics and wasn't a fan of the music.

Did not enjoy at all. Couldn't force myself to finish the album.

Just uninteresting across the board.

Did not like.

I found the lyrics trite to say the least. Awful album.

I had the misfortune of having “Without You” running through my head from age 6-10. I hated it then and I hate it now. I’m curious if it was because it’s a particularly sticky song or just because I was young and impressionable. “Coconut” was an early novelty song in the vein of Ballroom Blitz and Monster Mash, only much much worse.

This is awful, and now I also dislike the coconut song. None of this music needed to be recorded and it's a testament to the seventies that this urgently pointless music was tolerated. Be on the lookout for a really insightful song where a white dude asks why we can't just LISTEN to each other, man

I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS

I had to double check to make sure that I was listening to the right album. This is a mess. It sounds as though it is unfinished. Most of the songs remind me of nursery rhymes. Without You is a shocker.

não gostei

One of the worst albums on the list so far.

You put the peeps in the chili pot and eat them both up, you put the peeps in the chili pot and add the m&ms. You put the peeps in the chili pot and make it taste... bad.

It's like Billy Joel after a breakdown.

To me, this is a cheap imitation of Paul McCartney

mmmmm i dont know about this. oh i dont like this :( nothing wrong with it but its a no from me. cant stand "without you" good god hes whiny. sorry. lol somehow coconut is exactly what i expected from the cover art. i like jump into the fire! too bad i hated most of everything else.

Not my thing

lime in da coconut

i dont rilly lik muzik

Some nice songs but nothing special or outstanding. 6/10
