weird but in a good way

It’s impossible not to love an album that bravely makes the tonal leap from Without You to Coconut… Stupendous! Every song brings a smile.
Decent
70s schmaltz, but some good signing and a few good grooves. Had only ever heard the coconut song before, which is not representative. I think this music would have been long forgotten without the novelty factor. Dude strikes me as the Ed Sheeran of the 70s.

Fun but forgettable, save for a few songs. I liked it, but I'm not clamoring for another listen.
Soulful, playful, and adventurous. I quite enjoyed this album, and although it is not modern by any means, it did occasionally brush into timeless.
Some lovely Macca/Beatles-y stuff. But also that bloody coconut song.

Mukavan letkeetä. Vaikea kyllä olla vertaamatta Beatlesiin, ja tuntuu paikoin vaan halvalta beatles-kopiolta. Mutta halpa beatles-kopio voi silti olla ihan jees.

Apparently Nilsson was a favorite of the Beatles, and I saw some indications of great songwriting, but there were many misses as well.

Fine album um,, lots of great songs and at time Harry's voice is absolutely beautiful, like in Without You. There are a couple of rockers that give this album energy. The blues song has a real air of authenticity and Harry makes it his own. As he does for all the material here. I can understand why this has become a classic and his go to album. 4.5 🌟

Slightly surprised how good this is. Jazzy, funky, soulful with a side order of rocking, all without really being any of those things.
What an unexpected delight. I love the way "Without You," probably the definitive modern love song, is followed by the playful absurdity of "Coconut," then "Jump Into the Fire" takes us on a psych-rock odyssey. And it does all this without ever losing its focus or missing a beat.
Quirky album. I dig it.

What a fun eclectic mixture of tunes, did not know that he popularized the “lime in the coconut” song.
Loved this album more than I expected! Definitely going into my regular rotation. Reminds me of my dad and learning about rock music.
This is intriguing! It sounds like the sort of indie folk rock that had its moment in the 90s, like the Lemonheads when they stopped going punk. And yet it's not quite possible to say this would have influenced those 90s groups because the legend of this album is that it lingered in obscurity until a 90s rerelease. The production is bright and the album has an enjoyable pace. Give me this slice of the mid 70s that sounds just as fresh 45 years on.
Call this one a *hard* 4.5 because man, I was vibing hard to this record until "Coconut" brought it to a screeching halt. "Coconut" feels like a novelty song mixed in with some absolute, genuinely wonderful pop music. The rest of the album? Flawless. Just drop "Coconut". Favorite tracks: "Gotta Get Up", "Down", "Without You", "Jump Into the Fire"
I liked (and knew) Without you and coconut. The rest of the songs sound uninteresting and tiring. Kept zoning out and having it as background noise, even if I was actively trying to listen to it.
Coconut was lit, Gotta Get Up was very Russian Doll. 5.5/10 overall.

viel Beatles - Seargent peppers usw drinnen, Randy newman, Crosby stills and naish. Teilweise fast Musical-artig. Aufwändige Arrangements - und ganz weird - Fade outs! Auch teilweise comical - überspitzt (put the lemon in the coconut - SIMPSONS!!). Plötzlich - a wild KEN LIIIII LIBUDIBUDAUTSCHU appears! ned uninteressant

I was excited to see this album come up. Gotta Get Up is fun having been a big fan of Russian Doll a couple years ago. My favorite tracks are Driving Along and Without You.
Hadn't heard of this guy before but recognised a few of the songs on the album. Enjoyable and of its time. Probably won't rush back to listen.
Had some redeeming qualities, but it’s really just 35 minutes of pure cheese, 4/10

As a first for this listener, the album title started off this whole experience from a bias towards mockery. Starting off, the songs were token 70s, a sense of fun and lack of seriousness --- a remarkable contrast to the culture of America at this stage of Vietnam. We work our way through lesser known songs we finally come across "Without You" and "Coconut" arguably two of the more popular songs engrained within the lexicon of pop culture notoriety yet almost completely detached from Harry Nilsson himself.
Me, listening to this album in real time: This is kinda nice. Feels like a vanity project, but he actually has some chops. Oh this song is good too, but in a different way. WAIT THIS IS THE LIME IN THE COCONUT GUY?!?!? WTFFFFFFFF A fine lil' album that I was happy to find. It's weird that he's the lime in the coconut guy. Is that song why this album was included? Maybe.
Album had me chuckling with just the name since could be Wilson Schmilsson. What a friggin’ fun, light, upbeat, boppy album with a scattering of deeper, perspective lyrics (you can see all the people who seem to have nothing to say to each other, each day they grow farther and farther from each other…faces so tired of facing each other). Immediately hooked from track #1 Gotta Get Up, grabbed by the lyrics of Driving Along, enthralled by the simple 5 note beat of Early in the Morning and who TF doesn’t love the Coconut song?!? Probably my Trek America passengers that I played it for at least once a day on our 6 week trip😊. Could do without The Moonbeam Song even though some interesting lyrics spattered throughout. Nice soulful tune with some solid horns in Down. Always thought Without You was sung by a woman albeit with a deep voice. Or maybe I just thought a man joined in on the chorus. A good song but I’m way over love songs. Didn’t know he had the more known version of Let The Good Times Roll; enjoyable enough. Nice bass on Jump Into The Fire, a good rockin’ tune. Ending on I’ll Never Leave You a little drag but interesting musical melody that some sections had me thinking of Dance with the Sugar Plum Fairy. Again, would have given 3 and a half stars but the repetitiveness and the few love songs definitely don’t constitute a 4 star rating. But album was definitely added to my library and glad I was exposed to it. And now all I can do is picture myself on my motorcycle driving along at 57,000 MPH, now that’s fast!

Enjoyed this. Thought I only knew Coconut (such a strange song compared to the rest of the album) but recognized several as the album went on. Without You is beautifully written and sang. Gotta Get Up has that Mr Blue Sky/ A Day In The Life “alarm clock” kinda feeling too it. Fav Songs: “Without You” “Gotta Get Up”

A bit of a gem that went forgotten over the years. Aged, yes, but there is some good stuff in there - including 2 outright excellent songs.

First impression: blatant Beatles-esque attempt. HN's real voice is present in Early in the Morning and Coconut Song. I think that "Paul is Dead" might have been when HN left the band as was replaced by is brother PM who share a father? This is pretty good, against my original impression. 4 stars.
Harry Nilsson's 7th album and his most successful one. It's a rock album with 3 famous singles - one being a number 1 hit. The music sounded pretty mainstream, so much so that I believe I have heard this music before and don't remember it. This was an awesome album and definitely deserves to be included on the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list.
This guy is such an oddball to me for some reason. Is he really an oddball? I don't know. But I love so many of his songs and the fact that he was ever popular seems strange to me. He doesn't seem to fit in a particular genre of music.
There were a couple of occasions where I laughed due to surprise, so audacious could Nilsson be with some of his vocal melodies. An extraordinary voice. The same cannot be said for the music, which is quirky in the conservative way a lot of albums of this era are. Still, Nilsson draws on rock, jazz, blues and balladry with aplomb, making this a varied listen - and one that doesn't outstay its welcome.
So good. Even when there’s a song I tune out of or just generally dislike (looking at you “Coconut”), there’s usually a song right after that I’m all over. How great is that last tune? Strong closer, especially coming on the heels of “Jump in Ray Liotta’s Fire.” Gotta stir the sauce or it’s gonna burn, boys.

Opening track is very familiar, didn't know Harry Nilsson but it's music that you've definitely heard in movies/tv. Poppy classic rock, a guy and his keyboard and occasionally a guitar in the mix. Kind of fluctuates between jaunty energetic tunes and some more slow/sad tunes. Some real bops in the mix, good energy and you can really feel how deep he is into the music as he's playing and giving it his all when he sings. Only one that I really didn't like was the last song on the album. Everything else was enjoyable and brought a lot of different styles and emotions to the album.

Aside from a couple songs the album was really good. It had fun songs that felt like an old movie intro and emotional songs that made me wanna give Harry a hug.

Great humor. Jump into the Fire is a headbanger.
I want to know everything I can about the infamous "Lost Weekend" where John Lennon and Harry Nilsson did everything they could to drink themselves to death. Apparently Nilsson was such a legendary boozehound that all Lennon would have to say about the time was, "I was drinking with Harry Nilsson" and everyone knew exactly what he was talking about. Lennon had such admiration for Nilsson that he was willing to follow the man to the end of the earth. Listening to this album, you hear why Lennon (and apparently the other 3 Beatles) sung Nilsson's praises. The three hits are the standouts, especially "Jump Into The Fire". That one obtained legendary status for scoring the Ray Liotta paranoia coke montage in Goodfellas. I bet Harry Nilsson loved Goodfellas. If you're ever running late somewhere and find the need to go just a tad over the speed limit, I highly recommend scoring your trip to "Jump Into The Fire". You'll find yourself looking up and thinking that helicopters are following you. The song alone is almost enough to rate this baby as a 5 (well, that and the album cover). Back to that Lost Weekend with Harry and Lennon: Apparently video footage of the night Lennon and Nilsson got kicked out of the troubadour because they could not stop heckling the Smothers Brothers doesn't exist. That just breaks my heart. I bet I'd like a movie about their Lost Weekend as much as I love Goodfellas.

Nilsson is an expert songwriter. I am impressed by most every song on here, just lovely works. I don't have much more to say. Just great songs.
I didn’t know the name but knew some of the tracks. Pretty enjoyable. Lot of it was just Beatles-light but his more vocal Exploratory bits stand apart. I’d do 3.5 if I could but I’ll stay 3.

I'm finding it exceedingly hard to rate this album. On the one hand, it contains some great songs (Gotta get up; Coconut; Jump into the fire; Early in the morning). On the other hand, it also contains some kind of whiny songs that I definitely thought about skipping (Without you; I'll never leave you). However, he did name this album Nilsson Schmilsson, which also deserves at least another half star. Let's settle for 4.5 stars then, which I will round down to 4.

Sounds like George Martin is all over this or this is revolver era throw aways. Had some recognizable classics and slick ballad writing but the vocal didn’t endear me much.

Melodic and very Beatlesy at times but not an album I’d go back to. Recognised about 3 or 4 songs, had no idea they were Nilsson. He definitely wouldn’t get away with Coconut today.

Pleasant enough, one of those albums where you recognize a lot of the music without really knowing where you've heard it before. Not bad, not great, an alright album.
I seriously hesitated in not giving this album 5 stars. The first song is super fun, reminding me of the upbeat music of scissor sisters. The drum break in Jump Into the Fire is one of the biggest highlights. You can really hear a Beatles-esque influence all throughout the album. Will definitely listen again.

Sounds waaaaay ahead of its time. Right from the first track. Some songs sound like something you'd hear on the radio now. Can hear some Beatles influence. Decent songs though overall. I recognised 'Without You' and 'Coconut'. Struggled whether to give this a 3 or a 4 cos its not massively my kinda genre but as a whole album it is really well done, feels like a bit of an artistic masterpiece. So, 4/5

Ho Hum...another uninspiring album full of folky/pop tracks. Apart from the well known commercial classics off this album there isn’t too much here I’m keen on. In saying that, the tracks released as hits are not really my cup of tea anyway. As you can probably guess...I’m not rating this one very highly. 2 Stars

It was ok. Nothing to write home about
Lots to say. Only listened to the original tracklist and skipped the bonus stuff. Great things: Variety of style (this album moves through rock, pop and blues) and variety of vibe (every song has a different feel), strong performance (Nilsson's voice is extraordinary), wide instrumentation (accordion, harmonica, brass, piano, normal rock rhythm section), just really excellent songs overall. Love that "Jump into the Fire" is one big rock jam song, but it messes with the signal volumes so you get this OTT bass solo and so the whole thing doesn't really drag, maybe my favourite song on here. Things that make this album stand out: The vocal is strong in the mix, but the lyrics are enigmatic, compact and weird, the subject matter is normally quite simple (getting up, driving to work, being sleepy, the moon, being down, being in love whatever) but hard to work out what individual lines mean coz he says unusual things, he wears a dressing gown on the album cover, and the album name is just taking the piss out of himself. Also, this guy writes a beautiful song like "Without You" but follows it up with some cautionary tale about limes and coconuts. That shit is whiplash-level jarring and I love it, and I can't stay mad at him coz his voice is just excellent and the whole thing makes me laugh. Every song has grown on me after multiple listens. I really wanna listen to more of this so gotta be five stars.

Didn't think I'd know any Harry Nilsson songs but there are some stone-cold classics on here. I'm all for the odd choice of album name and album cover too.
Jump into the Fire is echt te gek! Die stem is zo cool, maar de hoge verwachtingen door dat nummer worden niet waargemaakt op dit album.

Aika monipuolinen levy, oli vähän jatsahtavaa menoa (mm. pitkä rumpusoolo!), soul/blues-henkisiä biisejä ja sitten muuta kevyempää pop-rockia ja sitten Reservoir dogsin soundtrackilta tuttu kummajainen - Coconut. Levyn loppua kohden tunnelma vähän laimeni, joten ei ihan neloseen saakka yllä.

Not a bad listen. I feel like he’s got a similar style to Randy Newman but for some reason I find it hard to rate him as highly. The back half was better and I should come back to “Let the Good Times Roll” and “Jump Into the Fire”.
Surprised by the album and how much I enjoyed it. Always excited to recognize a song (as someone with not much of a music background) so enjoyed Coconut when it came on, but also liked it a lot more than I expected. Good tunes all around.
There a few songs on here that are familiar and really good.
You can really tell he’s going for a Beatles vibe, but he’s just not good enough of a singer and doesn’t have enough energy in the beat to make it a very good impression.
I’ve seen this album cover dozens of times over the years while flipping through the used bins. After a listen, I don’t really regret passing it up. It starts off nicely with the Beatlesque track “Gotta Get Up” then the swing-and-a-miss attempt at the blues with “Driving Along”. I was off put by the horns on “Down”, but I’ve never been much of a fan of brass (saxophone excepted of course!). Then the big hit “Without You” played, and I thought ‘oh, that’s who sings this...”. The rest of the album fairly inoffensive, and I liked the bass and drums on “Jump Into the Fire”. Covers of “Cocunut” and “Let the Good Times Roll” made me think the songwriting well for this album was pretty shallow. This is a 2.5, and I’m struggling to round up. Did it anyway.
I liked it a lot -- it was quite strange, but I thought that there were some sick instrumental parts, and he has a really nice voice. I liked Without You, Jump into the Fire, and The Moonbeam Song, but the Coconut song is also a straight up classic.
Exceptional album. Really really enjoyed it, recognised a few of the songs but never knew who sang them.
Put off listening to this, but a vey surprising album full of great Beatle-era pop tunes. 4.3

very fun, what a difference between without you and coconut. I liked early in the morning and jump into the fire best (sick bass and drums).
I'm not sure why but was expecting this to be...well, more Scandinavian! Having said that with the exception of the over use of an accordion on the first song, its quite good. Beatle-esque. Solid 3/5 Extra point as in the 2nd half of this album it really ups its game 4/5

4.0 - “Without You” is an indication of the quality of songs on this album. Every song is well composed, many take interesting risks or even seem built on a risk, the synthesized organ sounds come through as confident and bassy as early Elton John. Vocals are sharp and I’d put him up against Mariah on “Without You”, he just crushes on that track.
Confession, "Gotta Get Up" was my morning alarm song for awhile. I'd heard this album a few times when my dad played it in the car. I always enjoyed it but it never made a huge impression on me other than that song, so I was ready to give it a 3. But then "Without You" came on and I couldn't stop myself from belting the hell out of that chorus, and I was like no yeah this is a 4! And lest we forget the man gave us the gift of "Coconut" on this record. Bless you for that absurdity Harry Nilsson. This album may not have had a ton of cultural impact or influence, but man is it a fun listen.

Without You is the most notable song on the album alongside Coconut & Jump Into the Fire. Not a bad album and was pleasantly surprised as it progressed. Easy to listen to and it goes quick. Really solid 7/10.

The artist no one knows they know, and love. I realized I had never sat down and just listened to him. He's just everywhere.

I remember "Coconut" being kind-of popular back in the seventies. For me, the stand out track on this album is "Jump Into The Fire". I don't think I'd had heard it until Martin Scorsese used it for the cocaine-fueled meltdown scene in the movie "Goodfellas".

2.5 Tiene puntos interesantes. Las primeras dos canciones son buenas, Without You es (a pesar de lo echada a perder que la tengo en la cabeza por culpa de Ken Lee) una versión mucho mejor que la original y una gran canción despechosa. Tiene una voz interesante y que puede sonar muy distinta de una canción a otra. Por otro lado el disco se siente sin pies ni cabeza, los covers unos bien pero por ejemplo Let the Good Times Roll muy por debajo de la original de los 50s. Las canciones no fluyen y no se siente cohesión, empieza con una canción que casi parece plagio de Paul McCartney, pasa por un órgano sintetizador suave y casi silbado, una canción que parece infantil y termina en una medio balada totalmente x. Leí un poco de él y creo que a final de cuentas lo respeto mucho, se ve que talento tenía pero simplemente nunca se tomó en serio su carrera y no se dio ínfulas de nada en la vida. Por ahí vi que hay un documental sobre su vida intentaré verlo, creo puede ser más interesante incluso que su música. Tarantino lo supo desde hace años... la mejor canción era la del limon en el coco.

Struggled. I can appreciate it’s good, but it doesn’t suit my mood at the moment.
Love how the first few songs are about the morning and so he’s wearing a bathrobe in cover shot (possibly smoking a roach clip). This music is way too corny for my taste but Harry seems like someone I want to be friends with. I think he was having some fun making this.

Radio random cantado por el mismo sujeto! Creo que las canciones son buenas y aunque pueden variar mucho en el género musical, el problema real es que no se nota un sello propio. Me parece muy interesante que un artista brinque tanto de géneros en un sólo disco, sin embargo no termina de fraguar su propio estilo. No creo que llegue al extremo de "por tratar de hacer todo terminó haciendo nada" pero sí me parece que tanta revoltura termina por opacar su talento. 2.5 estrellas que bajan a 2 por el simple hecho de que no pienso volver a escuchar el disco completo. Justo al terminar esta opinión encontré la idea que me provocó este disco: innecesario. Sabes hacer canciones de los 50s, 60s, 70s? No hay necesidad de juntarlas todas en un mismo disco. Puedes escribir una buena canción de rock como Jump into the fire? Vamos a ponerle 2 minutos de percusiones. Tu disco es muy variado? Vamos a ponerle una canción sin sentido como Coconut. Creo que esa exageración de formas y géneros e ideas termina por cansar. Tracks: Down, Let the good times roll, Jump into the fire.
at times ween-esque, very poppy, good vocals
This is Sunday morning spring cleaning music. Open the blinds, open the windows because and it’s just warm enough. The sun peeks through some clouds and you know it’s gonna stay out all day. It’s time to get out the swifter. Really enjoying the Beatles-esque voice meshed with a few electric guitar riffs. Reminds me of Carole King.

Hard not to love Harry Nilsson, he is so playful and earnest. Quite a few good songs here and I think they hold together pretty well as an album too.

Strange. The band is quite eclectic but they definitely can play. The instrumentals on this are good and lyrically is weird. Overall not my kind of music but its still decent to listen to.

My favorite Nilsson album. Nobody sounds quite like him. Has a sort of timeless quality. Amazing voice and gorgeous arrangements. Incredible range on display here in terms of emotions/moods captured and influences that he's woven together with impeccable pop craftsmanship. I feel like he sort of went off the rails in some ways after this album but this is him at his absolute apex. Love the album cover too. It's so bravely honestly vulnerably human, especially for the time. So comfortable with himself/who he is. I feel like it was a comically self deprecating way to balance the sheer beauty of the music. That and poke fun of the egos of so many other music performers.
First song is like, 70s Tom Goes. His take on "Get Ready". Joking aside, this is pretty easily listening, just throw it on in the background and it'll be fine. Very Radio friendly. Beyond that, doesn't do much for me. I can tell he's got some talent, but not exactly my cup of tea. I wouldn't reach for the radio dial to turn it to something else though. Oh and I have heard "Without You". Very Beatles-esque. I like the harmonies, actually. This one might be my fav on the album, but it's a bit cheesy, but it's earnest so I can't fault it. This was prob the movie/breakup song of the year. Oh god I have heard "Coconut". Not a fan. I remember Coke used it for their Coke with Lime (Put the lime in the coke, you nut). Pretty good ad, actually. It's on YT. "Jump in the Sea" instrumentation is pretty good actually, thought it was a different band that came up through Spotify. The lyrics/vocals bring it down for me though. Really hard to rate, but 2.5 rounded up to 3 for me.

El nombre y la portada me predispusieron un poco y pensé que lo iba a odiar. Y resulta que este disco es el que tiene la versión más famosa (pre Mariah Carey) de Ken Lee. Y resulta que este fulano era chile de Lennon y es con quien tuvo su "Lost Weekend" y hasta hicieron un disco juntos, y hasta le decían "The American Beatle". Y Coconut que es básicamente una broma, tiene covers hasta de McCartney. En fin, me sorprendió positivamente y si hubiera medias estrellas le daría media más.
I wouldn't have said that I knew Harry Nilsson, but yet, I knew a bunch of these songs. As a Wilco fan, it's cool to hear what is undoubtedly an influence on the songwriting and recording techniques.

Ihan mukavaa perusrallattelupoppia 70-luvulta pienillä proge-elementeillä. Biiseistä mieleen jäi ainoastaan Mariah Careyn hitti Without You, joka ilmeisesti ei ollut alunperin myöskään Nilssonin biisi. Myös ärsyttävä limekookosrallattelu jäi mieleen kun sitä oli minulle etukäteen mainostettu. Ei häiritsevää, ei mieleenpainuvaa. Ensimmäisen kuuntelun perusteella olisin antanut kolmosen mutta toinen kuuntelu pudotti arvosanan kakkoseksi.

I'm absolutely loving this album. I don't think there is a bad song on this record. There are some great highs and lows. I feel Nilsson has a great sense of humor. I'll keep this one handy

Album was pretty groovy. I went into it thinking it’d be weird soft slow stuff but it wasn’t! I had no idea he wrote Coconut. The accent is weird in today’s context but I’m sure it wasn’t in 1971. Honestly a fun album. Enjoyed Jump into the Fire the most I think.
Mellow album. Very typical early 70s soft pop/rock. A couple of recognizable songs. Coconuts. Muppet show memories. Not very memorable. 3/5
Had no idea "Without You" was originally from this album. "Coconut" is my favorite and also had no idea this is where it came from. Loved the bass guitar in "Jump Into the Fire"
