ok. 4/5
Veldig positiv overraskelse. Forventa møe mer pling plong, klok av skade etter Robert Wyatt, men dette var jo bare kos. Noe rare greier som ikke treffer meg helt, men gøy å få et navn til flere låter jeg har hørt før. Beste låt: Gotta Get Up
Yeaaaaa 3.5/5
Put de lime in de coconut. I liked this album a lot. Very varied.
There are some surprisingly interesting songs. He's very versatile, but a lot of it feels like filler
cool
What an absolute nut. Just out of his mind, but he makes decent music.
Fun, cozy vibes, with a few meme songs for good measure
Tiene temas memorables pero lo noto algo inconsistente. I Can't live if living is without you - right in the feelings
This album has 3 or 4 really great songs on it - Gotta Get Up, Without You, Coconut and Jump Into The Fire - but the rest is a bit forgettable. I like Nilsson. I like his sly humour and the fact this album came with a poster of him in his dressing gown, so I'll give it a 4 but it's more of a 3.5.
It’s got the soundly Coconut on it - which is insane, so on that alone this gets a high score - rest is good as well!
I had no idea I knew this guy so well. No idea how he has slipped past me this long. That lime in the coconut song sucks big time. But the rest of this is REALLY good
omg biitles tykkäsi tästä henkilöstä! a favorite of the bidles! lautakunta miettii hmm tämän on pakko olla hyvä.. joojoo laita nilssonia on tärkeää bitchlesit tykkäs ne tykkäs.. Wow! I have only, maybe like a few people only heard Without You through Mariah Carey. So I didn’t really know what to expect when this popped up. As it goes, it’s pretty brilliant. It’s a shame the last track falls a bit flat as it could have been a 5
Good stuff in this one. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
Started off slow but by the end I ended up really enjoying this album
Surprisingly awesome! Many different styles but all enjoyable to listen to. Early in the morning is what really got me hooked.
excelente, me deixa feliz. e que voz
Very relaxing would recommend
The diversity of songwriting here is really a pleasure to listen to - almost pushed a 5 for me
The coconut song!
I can’t liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive
I can only respect the fact he's gone with that album title, and the cover art is him just chilling in a robe. The guy is too cool by far. It's also a great album, covering all sorts of musical avenues, easy to forget it's from 1971. Production sounds much more fresh and advanced than that and he combines playful instrumentation with excellent songwriting and really strong vocals.
A good weird album. I bought this for a dime on vinyl years ago and it's still strange
Goooooood
There’s something gloriously weird and wonderful about Nilsson Schmilsson. I came into this album not knowing quite what to expect, and it still managed to throw me off in the best way. Harry Nilsson’s voice is buttery smooth but he’s clearly a bit of a mischief-maker underneath it all. Tracks like “Coconut” feel like he’s taking the mick, while “Jump Into the Fire” is a proper sweaty freak-out jam that somehow fits right alongside the gentle, heart-wrenching “Without You”. I really enjoyed the mix of playfulness and sincerity here. It bounces between genres like it’s got somewhere better to be, and even when it veers into novelty territory, it’s still clever, catchy and hard to fault. You get the sense Nilsson was doing exactly what he wanted, and it just so happens that what he wanted was to make something both cheeky and timeless. Not every track is perfect, but when this album hits, it really hits. It’s got heart, hooks, and just enough chaos to keep it from ever feeling safe.
When I saw this I thought it was a name I should know, and I was correct. Knew several songs, and easy to see the influence he had.
Good vibe. Would listen again.
Actually sounds like the Beatles, incredible. Great songwritting, great compositions. Actually think i might come back for this album. My favorites: Gotta get up, The moonbeam song, Down, Without you, Jump into the fire, let the good times roll.
cool 3.5 rounded to 4
done bbbbbb
Pretty interesting album, I loved the goofier cuts of the album and the serious ones met with it pretty well.
The lime and the coconut.
This album kinda ruled
A soft rock classic. Some great songs on here and it's an eclectic mix. I really appreciate his melodicism and goofy sense of humor on "Coconut."
Very Very good. One of the cool things of using this website. Discovering these gems. 5/5
This was fantastic. How have I never listened to this?
This was really cool. I really like this 1970s pop rock sound. It really feels like The Beatles. Its emotional, it's silly, its serious. I like the songs about love and connection, while also the less serious songs like Gotta Get Up or Coconut. I like how he is playing with sounds and genres and kind of just doing what he enjoys. This was really cool!
*SONGS I ALREADY KNEW: Coconut and Gotta Get Up. Also knew Harry from The Point! and that he had some Beatles ties. *RESEARCH: He's from Brooklyn. Died from a heart attack. Born with heart problems. *Sounds like a combo of Billy Joel and the Beatles. *Super short - 34 minute album. One song is 7 mins. *Very solid, easy listening. Dave liked it too. RATING - 8/10
Very nice, has that sort of authentic 70’s rock feel but also different in its own way. Really liked it
4 out of 5, its pretty good.
Tricky. On one hand I like it a bit, on the other not too much, on the other hand it's explorative. 3.5, I think?
That was real fun. Very cute, catchy, comforting album. Coconut is genius and it’s funny how no one really appears to know the meaning of the song. This is the kind of album that I would play on a record player and just do my thing. Will definitely listen to some of the songs again this album was a great discovery
The best album from the "American Beatle", Harry Nilsson. Being championed by the likes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney should have been a recipe for instant success, particularly in the early 70s when people would have been mourning the end of the Beatles. But Nilsson never really broke out beyond some modest success and a few appearances on the charts. Some of that seems to have been Nilsson himself wanting to shun fame. Maybe some of it was the impossibility of meeting such absurd expectations that people put on them. Maybe also, people were starting to crave a new sound for a new decade. Whatever the case, "Nilsson Schmilsson" remains a slightly obscure classic, but only slightly. Many people will know a few of the songs, even if they don't recognize the name. And the album holds up very well, with a collection of 10 very different sounding songs. "Gotta Get Up" almost feels like a younger sibling to The Beatles' "A Day in the Life". "Without You" is sheer (if slightly comical) desperation of a lost love. "Coconut" in contrast is completely carefree and absurd. "Jump Into the Fire" is just a classic rock song with perfect energy. For my money, some of the rest of the album does drag a bit, but those highlights are well worth revisiting.
One thing I've always enjoyed about this album is the amount of different tones captured in its songs. Its a pretty diverse sounding album and still manages to work. "Without You" is obviously a banger but I also really like "Gotta Get Up", "The Moonbeam Song", and "Coconut". A lovely album through and through. Favorite track: Without You
Nice voice and incredible lirycs
Pleasant, chill 4/5
18/1001. One more album I had in the shelf. But this one was in my "b-pile" for some reason. So a quote "Well now that I heard the whole thing it is actually quite good. Should we listen to it again?" fits. There are songs I recognized but would never have attributed to Nilsson. Coconut - I'm sure was in the Muppet show (they always had the best songs, right ;)? Without you, really written by him? Great. And to balance that you the have boring "I want to be like the Beatles after they broke up stuff" like Let the good times roll. Come on, who needs yet another song like that? Some of the echoes of the fab four or even similarities with the Mael brothers sprinkled here and there along with the epic Coconut and some quirky production lifts this back to my main LP shelf :)
The frickin' coconut guy! Hadn't heard anything else by him as far as I know but I thought this album was pretty enjoyable (if a little dated). Would listen again.
I was certain going into this it was gonna get a 3 max but I was wrong. Its pretty much pop bliss. Like I couldn't have guessed this would be anything at all. But I recognized like half or more of the tracks on this. Lime in the coconut? Wtf? That's a song somebody wrote and not just an ever present construct of the human experience? Wow just wow
I found the deeper cuts better than the songs which have become iconic.
overall good, first half has a lot of psych-rock which is cool, but l love the album as a whole and I like the blues and jazzy roots.
Pleasantly surprised as I had no idea that this guy sang some of these songs. Overall a great album from top to bottom.
Okay. I mean he sounded good and the lyrics were fine if weird. Don’t think he’s all the Beatles made him out to be. Just fine.
huh-had never heard of him but knew quite a few tracks on album. had no idea he did so much (and most have been covered). 3.5 stars
I wonder what this guy would've pulled out if his career came ten years later. Seems primed for experimentation and his association with the Beatles sound is deserved, but I'd just like to see what he would do with an electronic drumset or a synth or something. Too bad John Lennon got shot, maybe Nilsson coulda been like Scott Walker and go weird places. This is maybe a generous four, but it's competently made, varied without feeling like a grab bag, and everything's pleasant. I think the bump comes from the competence over such a wide field. Weridly, the carnival-type beats here don't annoy me. Coconut is almost enough to drop it down to a three, though. Good lord.
18/05/2025 Didn't know what to expect from this, but it was alright.
Lots of fun songs
This was all over the place, but I dig it. A little ELO. A little Doobies. A little Beatles/Wings. A little Rufus Wainwright. A whole lotta Nilsson Schmilsson. 4/5 Highlights: Gotta Get Up Early in the Morning Down Without You Jump into the Fire
70s pop is really good pop. 4/5
Gotta get up - used to be my alarm so felt weirdly nostalgic Driving along - enjoyable topic Early in the morning - bluesy? The moonbeam song - fine Down - spiralling but upbeat Without you - a better cover Coconut - fab Let the good times roll - "not bad, yeah not bad" Jump into the fire - a strong long song I'll never leave you - sad sad Overall - some bangers but a weird mix
Decent variation of tracks. Didn't know Mariah covered one of these (that was also a cover).
Good
The album has two of his most well-known songs: "Coconut", which is a bit more repetitive than I thought (if that was even possible) and "Without You." Paul McCartney described it as "The Killer Song Of All Time". My wife said that's because you want to kill yourself when you hear it. The other song are quirky pop, especially for 1971. I have his best of, I need to dust that off and listen to it. Top tracks: "Gotta Get Up," "Jump Into The Fire," "WIthout You," "Let The Good Times Roll"
This is an interesting album. I thought it was going to be more folksy, but it's Bee Gees style pop with a little baroque feel. Moonbeam made me think of John Grant and I'll Never Leave You made me think of Rufus Wainwright. It feels like a band - not the music, which comes from session musicians - but the vocals, which comes from overdubs and layering I think. Again, it gives the album a big feel. And Harry Nilsson brings energy to a bunch of songs that make them easy toe tappers - Gotta Get Up, Down, Jump into the Fire (it's a single I don't recognize but I get why it was one). Or he brings big vocals to other songs - Without You (his well known tear jerker, a classic) and the two baroque style ones I mentioned earlier. I did not realize Coconut was a Nilsson - never really liked the song, but it's creative and all Harry on vocals. Feels like a 3.5 for me, but I'm rounding up for some innovative techniques and stylings that are still emulated today.
Really enjoyed this album start to finish. It's a little dated but it's really good. The only time I had listened to him so far on the 1001 was when I checked out his cover of Fred Neil's Everybody's Talking and I wasn't a huge fan of how he sang it. Fortunately, I think he sounds great on this album. Plus, as soon as I heard Without You and even Coconut I realized I've heard him before and just didn't know it was him. Don't think I can call it a 5, but I would definitely listen again and might dig into his catalog. Favorite tracks: Gotta Get Up (love the vocal line in the chorus - listening to this song it's unsurprising that the Beatles were fans - and apparently Ringo and John joined him for some drunken debauchery in the early 70s), The Moonbeam Song (nice chill track, with Beatles-esque harmonies), Down (kind of basic blues, but man he can sing), Without You (schmaltzy, but a classic), Jump Into the Fire (great groove - it goes a little long, but just in time switches to a fun drum break, joined by funky bass. The whole song is a bop), I'll Never Leave You (super peaceful final track - just left me thinking "I like this album." RIP Harry - I think I just joined the Beatles as a fan).
Didn't know of Nilsson before this list, and for being introduced I'm grateful. Not the best record of my life, not earth shattering, but I enjoyed it more than I thought. I have marked three songs as likes in Spotify. Cool!
Amazing first song and a great start to an album. The demo version of the moonbeam song sounds better. This was honestly a really great album except for the second half. The first half had some really great songs which makes it hard for me to rate this album as it is more than 3, but 4 seems too high. Consider my score a 3.5.
Stupid ass album love it
Bro tried to get a Caribbean accent with that “Coconut.” Honestly messed with a lot of this album!
4/5. A short and sweet track list of mostly lesser known songs that still stand by themselves. Nilsson had a few hits I knew about but each song on here is still worthwhile and a nice treat. The hits are obviously great, except for Coconut which does not age well in my opinion. Like, it's okay just annoying. That plus some mid songs like Let The Good Times Roll and Driving Along, it's not a perfect album but it is much better than I was expecting. Best Song: Without You, Jump Into The Fire, Down
Nearly lost tiny rock pearl with a lot to discover.
One of my Dad's favourites, and, therefore certainly one for me in the nostalgia vibes (if a cassette in a Ford Orion can give you the cosies that is). "Without You" that is a million times better than the Mariah Carey saccharine laced version, "Coconut Song" that probably isn't entirely appropriate anymore and I'd forgotten what an absolute banger "Jump Into the Fire" is. Something like a 4.4 - doesn't quite make the elite category for me, or I would play it more regularly, but it's a fine piece of work, no doubt.
Coconut goes brr
Never hear any of this before. This sounds like the Beatles. I’m intrigued already. Ok. Turns out I know “without you”. This is a great album. And this is the “lime in the coconut” guy. I had no idea. I love being surprised. This is a great album. I love the song writing and arranging.
There are some great songs on here, but also ones I don’t jive with so much. The Point is still my most favorite of his albums. Gotta Get Up was my alarm jam for many years off and on.
Honestly not bad, though it felt somewhat generic at times. Coconut is a classic but sooo annoying. Gotta get up is my fave!
Love the anger and cynicism. Takes on religion are still fair if simplistic. Dates but understand its value
Nilsson Schmilsson is a fun listen with a nice mix of quirk and charm. There are definitely a few tracks that feel like filler or just miss the mark entirely, but the good ones make up for it. “Gotta Get Up” and “Coconut” in particular bring that playful, offbeat energy. Not a perfect album, but a solid and enjoyable ride with a few standout moments.
I mean he's an amazing songwriter and these songs are objectively good, but I can never get into it. It just seems too 70s camp to me.
Coconut is a pretty silly song. I'm not a huge fan of novelty songs, but I am also a Jimmy Buffett fan, so I am probably a fan of certain novelty songs and I just don't love the song. Without You is a fantastic ballad, of course. I have tried to get into Harry Nilsson in the past, though I have not worked hard enough to hear all of his work. I enjoyed this album for sure. He's not quite Jim Croce for me and I don't know if I am going to go out and buy a Nilsson Schmilsson shirt or anything, but there is a lot to like here. Gotta Get Up Driving Along The Moonbeam Song Without You Jump Into the Fire I'll Never Leave You I would prefer Croce be in the book over Nilsson but this is still a good representation of 70's singer-songwriting.
приятная спокойная музыка, буквально вот так дома в халате и слушать
- I didn't know that "Without You" was actually his originally. - Surprisingly, I really liked the instrumental part in "Jump into the Fire". -"Coconut" was a wild ride but I enjoy whimsical songs, so of course I liked it. - I like his voice!
Didn't know he was put the lime in the coconut Guy. Solid album. Will listen again.
An album for the morning time. Gets you up and going or enhances that sleepy dazed feeling you get when you wake up earlier than usual. All the songs feel like they match up and belong on the same album together while at the same time all having range. I’ll say that the two blues covers felt out of place. They’re too iconic for a white man to try and achieve a folk-rock cover in the seventies. Otherwise, the writing, singing, instrumentation, production, and lyrics were all fantastic. No complaints there. I enjoy this album very much. 4/5
Very very good imho
So. Freaking. Good.
Not bad
Starts lazy and difficult morning after a moment that will define one’s life for years to come. Ends with the realisation that life is nothing without the loved one
Way more fun than I was expecting.
Has the "Lime in the Coconut" song. Okay otherwise. "Jump Into the Fire" is good.
Catchy tunes and hits that I’ve heard before - but didn’t know the name. Now I do.
Fun album. Gotta Get Up is a cool, upbeat opening song (Asher Roth had a good modern cover of this song). The three song stretch of Coconut, Let The Good Times Roll, and Jump Into The Fire was also quite enjoyable. I'd put this on the lower end of a 4, but a 4 nonetheless.
Had this on for a first listen as background noise while doing some drywall work. First impression was that this was a great album that was enjoyable straight through. Somewhere in the high 4 - low 5 territory. Gotta Get Up is a nice start -- feels a bit like the Beatles with the plonky keys and otherwise campy horns. Really enjoy the toned down nature of Early in the Morning -- just a pretty song. Without You through Jump Into the Fire is a great run. Without You is one of those classics I've heard a ton of times but never knew the name of the artist -- TIL. Coconut I know from some movie I saw at my grandma's house about some women killing a guy with magic (Practical Magic). Jump into the Fire is just a wonderfully loose jam that feels free. After a listen this morning, I'm calling this at a 4. Was a surprisingly enjoyable album, but not enough for the coveted spot.
That was a really unique album in terms of his singing style and just overall production. I really liked a lot of it and he is a pretty great singer. Don't really know how to explain what was so good about it, it just was. The album cover is pretty haunting though.
Ah the Beatles favorite artist! I've listened to some Nilsson but it was usually mid-late 70's where he was getting zonked nightly with Lennon. This is some very good stuff. Gotta Get Up is such a fun song. So is Coconut. So is Jump Into The Fire. This was very close to being a 5 for me.
This album never took a turn I was expecting. Particularly surprised by the Carribbean influences. Lots of songs I knew but didn't know where from or who they were by. Favourite song was Down. Enjoyable listening experience but wouldn't buy on vinyl
10/10 album title, 8/10 album. I had no idea if I liked it or not during the first listen, so I had to spin it again and found myself recognizing every single track. Impressive.
I could have told myself that "Coconut" would come from an album called Nilsson Schmilsson. It's quite brilliant and, at times, wonderfully beautiful.
Interessantes Album mit Klamauk und Gefühl und dem Godfather des Albums „Without Yiu“. Allein deswegen lohnt sich das Wiederhören.
been listening to this album since i was fifteen 😭 4/5
Ken Leeeeee. Ken Leebeebedebu douchouuuu. Harry Nilsson is great. This album feels a bit more like a showreel than an album. There is so little cohesion between the tracks, but it doesn't really lead to a jarring experience, instead it just highlights how much of a pop chameleon Nilsson is. The transition from Without You to Coconut is one of the wildest tone shifts in musical history. 3.9/5
This is a solid album, with a few classic songs. Liked Songs Added: Coconut
Pretty fucking good
Cool robe bro
Mad as a March hare
Fantastic album, strongest tracks in my opinion are: i’ll never leave you, driving along, the moonbeam song, and down. Great album over all
"Without You" one of the greatest ballads of the 20th century, arguably. When I first heard this album years ago, I didn't realize how many hits of his had been used in popular culture while I was growing up. Also, even with those hits, I feel he is still underrated. Very creative.
A solid album with groovy vibes! I was very excited to listen to this album because I love the song “Gotta Get Up!”
An easy listen. Haven’t heard of this artist but I knew a few of the songs. I guess they have been made popular by other artists. I liked it I guess.
Quite good
Some slow stuff and some great stuff.
Can I just say how much I loved listening to this album? Every single song made me feel so happy - like I'm going off to a picnic with a few close friends! I loved the lilt of the vocals and the instruments, I loved the playfulness, and I loved the whimsy in the songs that leaned more towards the quieter side! Favourite songs: Coconut, Moonbeam Song, Without you Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
I've heard a lot about this album, bit don't think I've listened to it the whole way through. I see why it's so widely acclaimed, with great songwriting and singing. I knew more of these songs than I thought (going into it I only recognised Coconut from the tracklist), and some are fantastic. There's some pretty goofy ones too - I found "Without You" hard to take seriously given how often it's been in ads/movies and melodramaticly been covered. Some of the songs owe a bit too much to the Beatles too. And as much as I love "Coconut", if some white dude in a bathrobe wrote that song today, he would probably (quite rightly) be cancelled. Top tier album cover though!
I had no idea that he was behind some of the most iconic songs!
Pretty fun. The Coconut song is the best.
Very cliche for today, but there are multiple songs that are ingrained in pop culture.
Loved it, own it
This was so stupid I loved it
Put the lime in the coconut!
This is such an intriguing album. Musically, it's good. I like the songs. But - I heard so much of the Beatles in there (a la Rubber Soul - Sgt Pepper) that I had to do a little more digging to see who was influencing who in the mid-late 60s. Turns out both John and Paul listed Nilsson as their favorite American artist. That's respect.
Hit after hit.
Classic rock/pop with nice grooves
Hits
So unserious- just an enjoyable record to remind you that not everything has to be deep. A legitimate good time.
Starts pretty good, ends really good
Much more fun than I remembered.
3.5 stars for me, but rounding up at the sheer audacity of putting the lime and coconut song right after without you.
„Let the Good Times Roll“ ist mein Lieblingssong.
when i saw the album cover, i was expecting another boring album but nothing of that ! a balanced album of sweet ballads and fun songs. and even tough his name didn't ring a bell at first, turned out i knew a lot songs on the album. "Coconut" is a bit annoying tough. rest of the album is great.
Well, at least, the claims to fame are not "included in the 1,001 albums to hear before you die." A couple of surprises: good and bad - right after each other. I enjoyed this version of Without You, and Coconut (by the Muppets) was listened to frequently in our house.
My immediate thought was this sounds like the Beatles, which Harry Nilsson was apparently known for Nilsson covers quite a broad range in styles and vibes in a succinct timeframe, the key example being Without You followed by Coconut (Coconut is stupid and I don't like it, but it's the most stark example I can give). He makes these shifts work though, it never feels like it shifts at a breakneck or jarring pace Didn't know who Harry Nilsson was, but I'm glad I heard this Highlights: Gotta Get Up, Jump Into The Fire
Beatles-esque
Love how colourful this album is. Soulful and funky. Such a unique, fun sound. Coconut is wild but I lowkey live for it. Kinda getting Paul Simon vibes.
Thought it was three but podcasters convinced me otherwise
8/10
Maybe it's because yesterday's album was so awful, or maybe it's because the subject matter of this one is so relatable for a middle aged man (reminiscing about staying out to 9:45, driving, the morning blues) but I found this surprisingly enjoyable. Let's face it, it was never going to get less than 4/5 with that title! Let's not talk about the accent on Coconut though.
This really grew on me over 3 listens. Funny how some albums do that. Quirky and a bit different, which I like, his personality shines through and there are some definite bangers
I don't think this has ever been cool, or the zeitgeist. But sometimes you just want to hear songs.
TIL - the guy who sings without you is the same guy that sings the lime in the coconut song. Solid album Harry.
Good and varied tracks. I like how many genres it covers but there are weaker tracks, like the annoying coconut song.
Without You is such a strong performance. My Mom always loved this album so it's hard to be objective. There's that classic warmth to music from this era. Great voice, some interesting musical composition. Worth a listen for sure.
Very solid album. Great mix of fun and emotional tracks and fantastic vocals.
Classic
The first track is very centrally used in Russian Doll, which is a time loop show, so you hear it about a million times, so that was slightly jarring. Anyway this album is fun and light. Some great thematic contrast: Down was a lot of fun and very different from the rest of the album. Coconut was totally frivolous in a good way. I initial said three stars, but on a second listen I've convinced myself up to a 4.
the good ones were great. the bad ones were absolutely forgettable. this is one of those occasions where I kept going "oh, he wrote that song?" which cements iconic status, imo
Never knew these were his songs
I’ve heard so many of these songs but did not know who did them. What’s worse, is that I attributed them to different artists. WOW, Harry Nilsson! You bad ass singer songwriter. I enjoyed this album WAY more than I expected.
His voice is undeniably clear and smooth. The song writing is spot on and just generally great to listen to.
Der Titel, nun ja, schreckt ab. Beim Hören entdeckt man tatsächlich musikalische Ideen, die den uneingeweihten Hörer positiv überraschen. Über den Übersong „Without You“ ist eigentlich alles schon gesagt.
Bit if a one-hit wonder as an album goes but there are multiple tracks on this that make it list worthy.
I had no clue about this album but I had a bloody good time listening too it, I love the lazy album over and the album name popped me immensely
I can dig it. melodic. Creative.
Enjoyable and a good entrance to appreciating folk elements in 70s music
Hade minst tre nedladdade mp3-låtar med Harry. Without you var inte en av dem. Som inte visade sig vara en Harry -låt dock. Men bra.
Very good first track and a few others especially but not all of them hit completely. I was jumpscared by the coconut song
Sounds like a crazy guy in his garage and tbf it sounds good!
Nilsson Schmilsson is one of those album titles that feels like it could only come from an artist who knows exactly how to not take themselves too seriously. It’s a playful declaration of creative freedom, a fitting title for an album that doesn’t so much defy musical convention as gleefully jump between genres, like a kid hopping from one toy to the next. But beneath all that whimsy, Nilsson Schmilsson is seriously fun. The album kicks off with “Gotta Get Up,” a track that recently enjoyed a resurgence thanks to Russian Doll, and rightfully so. It’s catchy, upbeat, and completely infectious, setting the tone well with its playful vibe. But then Nilsson pulls you into something different with “Early in the Morning,” which shimmers with a bluesy, stripped-back feel. The contrast is striking—the ability to take his whimsy and ground it in genuine emotion is what keeps this album feeling cohesive. Nilsson’s voice is the real star here. On “Tryin’ to Get to You,” his tenderness shines through, contrasting beautifully with the raw intensity of a track like “Jump Into the Fire,” where he channels a ferocious energy that feels ahead of its time, almost foreshadowing the gritty power of future rock genres. And then there’s “Without You,” the track that became a massive hit for Mariah Carey decades later. But Nilsson’s original version remains unparalleled, with his aching delivery wrapped in lush orchestration. The sorrow and beauty in his voice are so palpable that it feels almost like a personal confession to you the listener. But for all the emotional depth, Nilsson isn’t afraid to get quirky. Enter “Coconut,” a tongue-in-cheek, offbeat track that’s as much fun as it is utterly ridiculous. With its repetitive chorus and tropical percussion, it’s the kind of track that makes you smile whether you want to or not. And that’s the beauty of Nilsson Schmilsson—it never takes itself too seriously, and that light-heartedness makes it feel all the more sincere. Production-wise, the album shines thanks to Roy Halee, who brings a polished touch to the proceedings without relinquishing a degree of intimacy. The arrangements are dynamic, shifting from lush strings to punchy guitars, giving the album the kind of versatility that allows Nilsson to hop between moods with ease. It’s a perfect balance—Nilsson’s more experimental inclinations meet the commercial accessibility that made this album a breakthrough in both critical and commercial circles. When Nilsson Schmilsson dropped in 1971, it was a commercial high point for Nilsson. At the time, there weren’t many artists bending genres with such abandon, and Nilsson’s ability to infuse his songs with both lightheartedness and sincerity made him stand out. Compared to his earlier work, this album was more polished, but Nilsson still held onto that eccentric edge that made his music so compelling. It’s an album that grew in influence over time, from Beck’s genre-blending approach to the modern indie scene, which often channels Nilsson’s playful experimentation. Nilsson may not have been the most mainstream artist of his time, but Nilsson Schmilsson cemented his legacy as a musician who could write songs that were as emotionally powerful as they were unexpectedly fun. If you haven’t listened to this album in a while, it’s time to hit play again. it’s as much a treat now as it was back in 1971.
Some excellent songs
I have a soft spot for 60s 70s rock. But this album was great. The production was good, and had no idea I would hear the original lime in the coconut song.
It’s catchy, it’s strange, and it’s got heart. The voice is huge but never showy. Clean production, but it never feels stiff. Some songs feel massive, some barely hang together. You can tell he didn’t care about being cool, which makes it cooler.
Album muito bom, vc nem sente ele passando e extremamente divertido. Da para notar a influência dele em diversas bandas principalmente na guitarra.
Wow this was refreshing, a record that makes an hour feel like 15 minutes. The downside of that is, of course, that apart from the hits, nothing really stood out to me here. As an entire record though it was an enjoyable listen, and certainly one I'll be coming back to. It's like if you made the Beatles less boring. Pretty cool stuff.
the part where the coconut song in Alan Wake showed up was epic
The mark of the Antichrist, Robert Christgau, is on this album rating it an A. Two albums in a row that have great covers! First Electric Ladyland and now this. As much as I love Badfinger, I have to admit this is the best version of Without You. A fun album, as the title and album cover indicate that's exactly what the artist was going for here. Not every song is great (Coconut) but overall it's a tight 35 minutes with enough variety in mood and style to make it a fulfilling listen. It pains me to enjoy an album that Antichristgau rated highly, but this is too charming to not love. Highlights: The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Jump Into The Fire, I'll Never Leave You
Such a surprising collection of songs. I liked this a lot.
Gotta Get Up and Without You are all time bangers
gotta get up- 9. i love you russian doll <3 driving along- 7 early in the morning- 6 or 7 moonbeam song- 7 down- 7 or 8 without you- 6 coconut- 8 . shaking ass to this in the club let the good times roll- 7 jump into the fire- 7. bass is cool ill never leave you- 7
Mostly, very good!
Yep, this was a good one. Standout songs were "Gotta get up" and "Jump into the fire"
I SO love the title of this album. Without You: There's a few dozen melodramatic TV shows/movies that owe all their punch to this song. Coconut: I'm pretty sure this song is why Reservoir Dogs was a hit.
I've kinda loved this record for a while. Multiple bops, good sense of humor, and peak 70s singer/songwriter pop music aesthetics. The opening track runs through my head, unbidden, during much of the time I spend getting ready for work, and has done for years.
Aw yes, that's more like it. Already know his catalog pretty well but this is a pretty good representation. Coconut has not aged well tho.
I've never sat and listened to this album until now. Turns out I knew WAY more songs from this than I realized. I probably didn't even realize they were Nilson songs. While not a perfect album, it's really pleasant overall. Nice Saturday afternoon type of listen. I'm still not sure if coconut is so dumb it's good, or if it's simply just good.
3.5
Eclectic songs that were well cry
There is a lovely simplicity to Nilsson's music. Makes everything easy to listen to, and at times delightfully amusing
Without You = best song ever? He does Coconut, too? OMG Lamaze is cracking me up. I think I’m in love.
Nice voice. Early is the Morning is beautiful and plaintive. Interesting genre crossover. Without You is a deserved classic. Lovely vocal. Coconut is also famous and quite funny. Almost reggae. Altogether a fabulous album. 4/5
# Album Name: Nilsson Schmilsson # Artist: Harry Nilsson # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: At first i was thinking, wtf is this. But i had to give this one a chance. Theres a large range of difference styles on here. You only need to listen to the album to notice that. The lyrics and songs are catchy. The music is tight. The vocals are good. I enjoyed it. Theres some killer tracks like Gotta get up, jump into the fire and coconut. Without you is the obvious stand out. # Top Tunes: Jump into the fire, Gotta get up, without you, coconut # Would I listen to it again? Yes
This album scratches a part of my brain I didn’t know was there. I like the folky/blues vibe this album has, it’s simple yet intricate. Easy listening at its finest.
Really good album, been meaning to listen to Nilsson for a while, great voice, love the experimentation. It’s a 4.5 really but can’t put that unfortunately
enjoyable
Recognized many of these songs, great flow and threw me back in time.
good
Pleasantly surprised. I think it does lose a little steam towards the end, but this is a solid 4 for me.
Good album. Didn't care too much for the coconut song but good album overall. It is something that I think I could listen to, not regularly, but intermixed with my "liked songs" in spotify.
I had no idea this was the same guy who sang Coconut and Without You. This was also quirky listen, but my brain can't quite categorize what this is...this intrigues me. I will mostly certainly resist. 3.5 stars.
That was a dope record to listen to on my run this morning. Like bruh was all over the place sonically but it worked for me.
de vibes waren aanwezig
Stellar and classic
The transition from the emotional "Without You" to the... erm, interesting "Coconut" will forever be etched into my memories.
Quite a few bangers
83% Best: Gotta Get Up; The Moonbeam Song; Down; Jump Into The Fire Must-Hear? Sure
Actually very good!
Nilsson's voice is a thing of beauty and a massively underrated songwriter. I like this album a lot, although the classic Without You - and a deserved number one - is a Badfinger song
A lot of songs on here that I knew, but didn't know I knew. I'm feeling the rare 4 from an album I've never listened to until yesterday.
I have randomly been into Harry Nilsson on and off over the last 5 or so years thanks to the documentary about him and the opening track of this album, "Gotta Get Up" being used excellently in the show Russian Doll. Also, I should naturally drift to him anyway thanks to the love from the Beatles, most specifically his drinking buddy John Lennon. This album is fun and diverse with the bouncy opening track, the sappy ballad "Without You", and the fun Caribbean inspired "Coconut". "Let the Good Times Roll" was a super upbeat and great version here. Also, "Jump Into the Fire" really stood out to me on this listen. Funky bass-line and driving track that should get you pumped up.
Nice one.
Ik vind het wel leuke muziek. Lekker rustig op de ochtend. Het heeft soms wel iets weg van de Beatles. ****
Harry Nilsson is one of the greatest American songwriters, why else would John Lenon and Paul McCartney pick his brain so much. 4/5
Really liked this one
Lime in the coconut guy! More 70s dad jams, LFG
No way, the lime in the coconut guy! Pretty good - sounds kind of like solo Paul McCartney stuff.
Ich liebe die Rhythmen, v.a. in Gotta get up. Put the lime in the coconut!
You put the lime in the coconut, the limes really good but coconut's gone off
första och största är bäst
Fantastiska covers som jag inte visste var han. Men ojämnt. 4
really enjoed
Not many songwriters have the gift of veering from comic to tragic with such aplomb, but Harry Nilsson did. Gone way too soon.
Sounds like Beach Boys and Nick Drake mixed together, very good
Good record. Enjoyed it.
I love Harry Nilsson, and there were a few songs I didn't know he did. Really enjoyed the album.
Highs and lows here. Well known to me, and the peak (Jump Into The Fire) is almost Desert Island Disc. In its time and place I love it dearly, although like Harry himself it lets itself down just as it scrapes at the eternal.
This banged, lots of songs I recognised I didn’t realise were by him. Coconut
“Nilsson Schmilsson, Schmilsson Schmilsson!” - me if I thought this album was rubbish, which I don’t!
Rock (pop a veces) sesentero/setentero. Un megahit. Un 4.
9/10 Down - Jump into the Fire - Driving Alone - Without You - Coconut - I'll Never Leave You
Decent early 70s pop album. I appreciate and admire Harry Nilsson's sound and style.
More eclectic than I was expecting. Solid 4 for me although a couple of fillers pull it down half a mark, though they are forgiven and offset by the timeless enchantment of the Badfinger cover which is quite simply one of the most beautiful ballads ever written, and a candidate for best song from Swansea 😎
Really liked this!
Amazing album - I had no idea that Harry Nilsson was this good. I remember hearing "Without You" as a 9 year old kid. As an adult, I think it is one of the saddest songs ever written (and a Badfinger cover at that). Recently "Gotta Get Up" has bubbled into my consciousness from a commercial or something. To be honest, I thought it was a Billy Joel song. I'd give this album a 7 of 10. An unexpected gem that I will listen to again.
'The American Beatle', but with extra melody, amazing vocals, a horn section and a harmonica. The first couple of tracks are nice enough but there's so much more to come. The Moonbeam Song is a lullaby for grownups. Without You is a powerhouse vocal track with genuine lyrical depth. Coconut is a novelty ditty and cautionary tale about mixing your drinks. Let The Good Times Roll is a great cover of a popular 1950s R&B song. And then... Jump Into The Fire is 7 minutes of awesome sound! There's another track after that but who cares.
i kinda wish i could unhear coconut but other than that good album 4/5
Harry Nilsson made orchestrated pop music, with strong melodies and interesting arrangements. Nilsson Schmilsson is his seventh studio album, which includes some covers with his original material, as Nilsson did throughout his career. One of the cover on this album is is "Without You," a Badfinger song, that may be Nilsson's biggest hit. The rest of the album shows Nilsson's strength as a songwriters, from the quirky "Coconut," to the edgy "Jump into the Fire."
Lol this album genuinely made me laugh out loud. I can't believe how many great tracks are on this album that I've known for years, without even realizing who the artist was behind them! I mean, the guy didn't even bother giving this album a serious name, so he shares some of the blame.. thanks Schmilsson! :D -- great find
Mjög skemmtileg plata. Without you auðvitað negla og ekki síðra á spænsku. Kókoshnetu lagið snilld og fullt af öðrum góðum lögum.
cool album with a rock-jazz/blues sound, which is imbued with the spirit of the 70s
Schmamazing album. Without You is such an amazing song, it’s begging to be belted by someone like Lady Gaga. Nilsson’s no vocal slouch himself though.
Really enjoyed this and wasn’t super familiar with him before. Listened to it several times.
A few cases of filler but the good songs here are great.
More of the songs than I expected were ones I knew. A wide variety of styles and vocal range. The guy is clearly a genius, both in songwriting and in picking his cover versions to sing. Gotta get up, jump into the fire, and coconut were my favourite tracks. 4 🌟
MMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Not so wonderful, still can't give it less than 4 cause it has some epic tunes in it
Good quality recording
I was not expecting this from some guy in a bathrobe.
Weird but like in a good way
It was very diverse and good. And He had some classic which were really good
Sings like it was nothing (Without You might have been in one take? jesus christ). Wrote songs effortlessly in both the good and bad sense, like 'wow that dude can really write a song out of nowhere' and also now and again 'how about some effort, please, Mr. Nilsson'. Without You followed by Coconut is about the most Nilsson choice you can make. I hate Coconut but hate it a little less now. Have to admire the commitment to stupid ideas. Makes me think of how You're Breakin' My Heart could be a radio hit if it weren't unairable (except it is Cool and Coconut is Dumb). music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)
This once was a favourite of mine. I don’t have anything insightful to say, I still love it a lot. Have maybe just heard too much music now and it’s got a bit bumped down the list. Nilsson is cool as hell.
Keeping this one in rotation, loved it!
My favorite of this week. This album did a lot of good in its day, and tracks were copied and covered in lots of stuff over the decades. A heavy hitter for sure.
Didn't know this one, but there's a lot of well-known songs on here that have been covered extensively. Impressive collection of songs.

Enjoyed it
Oh so this is where that Muppet song comes from!!
American mccartney
I really enjoyed this album. I'd never heard of Harry Nilsson, but I definitely recognized a few of the songs.
Enjoyed this
Another good rocky album from the 70s.
So much fun!! All of the songs are different in some ways be it either instrumentation or vocal style but it doesn't seem all over the place. I also liked some of the slower songs on this which I sometimes tend to not enjoy. Overall very good! Favourite song: Early in the morning
Mostly a masterpiece. Accolades are deserved for this well-crafted pop album. Nilsson has a great voice with tremendous dynamic range, variety and a heartfelt emotional power. Outside of the two more well-known tunes (Without You and Coconut), "Jump Into the Fire" and "Gotta Get Up" age really well. Nice recording, too. Stands out, being from before the time when pop music was formulaic copy-pastes of pop music that was copy-pasted from the previous, ad infinitum.
It's fun, not my usual cup of tea but not unpleasant (she says fun and then "Without You" comes on). Coconut was repetitive but funny enough (the original Alan Wake referenced it too)
Not a bad album. It was funny a bit it was a little all over the place. Like Jump into the fire - drum and weird bass solo? Overall decent though
Tons of great songs. Spent most of the album saying to myself "Oh I didn't know this was who performed this song" or " I didn't know that the cover version I heard was originally by him"
Fakka med det
Kinda goes insane. This album feels very 70s but goddamn it hits. It’s one of those albums you’re just kinda thinking to yourself the whole time “this is cool, this is a vibe, I like this and I’m not sure why” feels like it has inspiration from multiple groups, Beatles, Tom waits etc. great record. Would probably listen again
Never knew the lime coconut song was from this. I like it idk what you want me to say
Coconut is annoying yet very catchy, felt drugged listening to it
I'd heard about this album for a long time. I first listened to it a few years ago. I kept my expectations low because so often these sort of lost-to-the-sands-of-time gems don't live up to the hype. Then I actually listened to it and I thought it was pretty good. Now for this project I listened to it a second time, and then a third time. The second time I was thinking: this isn't as good as I remembered it being. Then the third time I was like, okay, this is actually is pretty good. So, I guess I'm not completely decided between 3 and 4 stars. But I can tell you that "Coconut" sucks balls.
its like if the beatles were american and not as good. the problem with music like this is that the beatles exist, and they did it already. there is no beatles-esque music that surpasses the beatles. that said, this isnt bad at all, just not incredible, i bobbed my head a little.
Great lyrics. Some classic songs.
Despite all the rage - pretty grungy.
I wasn't familiar with this artist either, although he really does have an outstanding voice. A very entertaining and varied album, humorous and serious pieces and complex arrangements. From pop to rock to rhythm and blues, the album covers a broad spectrum. I particularly liked Early in the Morning, Down and Jump into the Fire.
Not bad
I was in the middle of a breakdown when goofy ahh song Coconut came on 😭😭🙏🙏
You sit there thinking you only know one Harry Nilsson song. Lo and behold you actually know half an album. Nice! Very under the radar genius! 3.8
What an oddball album. Very interested. Subtle hints of playfulness comparable to Ariel Pink or Connan Mockasin, but with a traditional voice and sound. So odd!
this was amazing lime in the coconut
First track is a classic, never heard of this guy - this is really good
Mostly loved this. A handful of songs are amongst my favourites. Always thought “Coconut” was a novelty song and not part of a real album. Can definitely hear the Beatles influence. 4/5
Do I... like this? I think I've heard "Gotta Get Up" before. Maybe it's just that I'm in my mid-30s and the lyrics strike a chord, even if the musicality is very late-60s Beatles-knockoff... That being said, there's good variety in these tracks.
Harry Nilsson really knew how to make a weird little masterpiece. Gotta Get Up kicks things off with such infectious energy you can't help but get pulled in. It's upbeat, it's got bounce, and it sets the tone perfectly. Then there's Coconut, the kind of oddball track you think is a joke the first time you hear it, until it's stuck in your head for three days straight. Everyone knows it, even if they don't know where they know it from. The whole album is packed with charm and a sense of playfulness that makes it stand out. It isn't trying to be cool or profound. It's just good, clever songwriting with real personality. Nilsson was doing his own thing, and this album is a solid reminder of how much fun music can be when it leans into the weird instead of running from it.
Kind of like a 5th Beatle? American Paul McCartney? A bit sillier and unserious, but here's some really fun songs here.
Expected this to be a joke but it’s seriously good!
This was a surprisingly enjoyable album from a guy I hadn't previously heard of!
i like this album! not as good as i remember it being the first time i listened to it, but still holds up imo
Pre-listening thoughts: writing this with the most raging headache in the world. Reallyyyyy hoping this album is good cause idk if I can handle something crappy tonight 😭 Post/during listening thoughts: 35 mins. Life is beautiful, I needed a short and sweet album tonight. The cover is also making me laugh a little like who took that pic 😭😭? I’m enjoying this a lot so far actually. A lot of the male singers on this list have been kind of… samey and a little whiny but this guy has a really lovely voice and I understand the Beatles comparisons (especially with harmony choices and vocal arrangements). This is bringing a smile to my face on such a rough day! The only complaint with short song length is they end so abruptly and many lack bridges (which I love bridges) so it’s a slight sadness. You ever hear a song and know it’s a certified hit? Yeah that’s me when I heard Without You my GODDDD. I did start falling asleep during Jump Into the Fire sorry it’s long and I’m really tired. I love the variety here and would absolutely revisit this 8.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: I dont think so but I definitely enjoyed this (although everyone should hear Without You at least once) Fav tracks: Gotta Get Up, The Moonbeam Song, Without You Least fav tracks: Jump into the Fire past minute 3
Surprisingly good. I didn't recognize the name but "Without You" is a classic I had on repeat thru the day.
Great
Good
Wasn’t familiar with him but enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. There’s at least 3 recognizable songs. Good use of horns, piano, percussion, layering. Some tracks have a zydeco feel. Well produced, his vocal range is quite good and his voice is rich.
Upbeat, diverse, vintage
Memorable songs. Used in goodfellas and other movie soundtracks
Pretty great! Was caught completely off-guard by Coconut lol
I've been really into this era of music lately, so I appreciated the slower folk sounds of this album a lot!
Above average
Surprisingly good overall.
A classic
Great artist, very talented. Great songs, and albums.
Such a great songwriter. Without You is a heartbreak classic and deserves to be on every tortured poet's playlist. Wait, Coconut is HIS song? Fecking brilliant.
Worthy of further listening........
Very good songs but reflecting of their time period.
-My mom is obsessed with this album apparently but I’d never listened to it. It’s actually really good, I fw the random Caribbean influence -Favorites are Early In The Morning, Coconut, and Jump Into The Fire
Just a dude jammin' in his morning attire
