Reviews (page 7 of 13)
I guess this is indie dance pop? Whatever it is it’s well executed here. I feel like I’ve heard Heads Will Roll dozens of times and never knew it was the yeah yeah yeahs. Skeletons, Hysterics, and Little Shadow were my faves. Excellent album cover.
This is great pop. Good energy and variety
I think Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been very solid over their career. They have also managed to not sound the same on any two discs. This is, in and of itself, worthy of note. Soft Shock and Runaway are particularly good. Does it belong on this list? I don't think so, but still a very good release.
It was fun to hear such a modern sounding record even if I don't think it really belongs on a list like this. A unique blend of dance and rock music. "Dragon Queen" had a great outro.
I really liked listening to this album. Dancey with some slower/acoustic songs that blend together well, it is artsy, cool, electrifying, but not simple/superficial. I'd give it a 4.5 but will stick to 4 out of 5.
Spicy overcast day jammin out in grade school cars - i can dig. Big hair album.
I've gotten through most of the album and I enjoyed it The production is crisp and I love Nick Zinner's work Karen O is as awesome as ever Notable Tracks: Heads Will Roll, Dull Life, Runaway, Hysteric
I enjoyed this album a lot, but it also wasn’t quite my taste. Aside from obvious highlights like Heads Will Roll, I wasn’t sold. Karen O is a great vocalist for this kind of sound and the disco-inspired production is impressive, but this isn’t what I’d put on for my personal listening. I can still respect that it’s good though, and props to this website for taking me outside of my comfort zone!
Never noticed Heads Will Roll on the tracklist when I put this on so enjoyed it when it came on Enjoyed this, this is my kinda thing in general. This could definitely go in my regular rotation
4,5
Once again I have been won over by 20-30 year old female-led rock music. I think I liked this one more than elastica but not quite as much as hole overall. I was surprised to hear heads will roll aka the frat lip sync song on here and it was my favorite song along with dull life. This album also did a good job of moving from powerful, energetic songs in the beginning to more slow stuff by the end.
Liked it but not every song was a winner. Solid 4.
I didn't think I knew of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but turns out I'm familiar with the song Heads Will Roll. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an indie rock band with a female lead from New York. This is their third studio album. This album was co-produced by TV on the Radio's keyboardist/guitarist David Sitek. These guys sound quite a bit like TV on the Radio, or Arcade Fire. Karen O's vocals are awesome! Overall, a great album. I didn't know how it would go. It seems like there is a fine line with indie music between excellent music and shit music. This falls into the excellent category. I will definately listen again. Favourite songs: Heads Will Roll, Runaway, Zero, Shame and Fortune, Hysteric, Faces, Soft Shock Least favourite song: Little Shadow 4/5
Going to rate this 4 stars purely for Zero (a song I still have on running playlists 14 years going). The rest of this though is really trying to reach that height and just not making it. What else can I say.
Indie band with a dance vibe. Tracks with different tempos on the album. 'Dull life' is a nice track.
I only knew "Maps" before listening to this album, and this was NOTHING like that. As much as I don't like rock/alternative bands going poppy, this was actually really fun to listen to. It wasn't so poppy to turn me off of listening to it again, or from listening to more of their albums
I had heard "Heads Will Roll" before but not much else by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The vocals were incredibly emotive, the lyrics fell somewhere in between predictable and meaningful depending on the song, and the instrumentals pretty captivating. That's a yes for me.
visai nieko, patiko, labiausiai zero, soft shock ir faces
"Dull life" is pretty good and "heads will roll" gives a certain queen of hearts vibe which I find pretty amusing. Overall, the more I hear it, the more I like it.
Slays. Still prefer the other one though
I though I was going to be really bored after the first couple of songs, but the last half was surprisingly good and brought me back around. I accidentally listened to the deluxe version and when the acoustic versions started playing I thought the album was taking a massive turn, but instead they're my preferred versions of some of the less good songs on it. It makes the album better for me, so that raises it up enough for the next star rating. Wasn't expecting what I got from the music of the album and the enjoyment from me, so I think I owe it at least a 4.
Yeah Yeah Yeah! This band is the gift that keeps giving.
Dance till' you're dead
Not my fave genre. That said, I liked the mellower songs. I like Karen O's voice very much
I'm not sure why this is on the 1001 albums list, but I did enjoy this album.
This is a classic; heads will roll is the highlight of course - but that doesn't detract from the rest of the experience! I never thought YYYs could be so much fun - Maps was pretty good, but this is almost there, if a bit more snazzy for my taste. YYYs are pretty much one of my fav bands now, not just because of Karen O :)
Really pleased with how much I liked this!
Love anything by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I don't quite know how to describe this, which is frustrating as I've listened to it through 5 odd times and really enjoyed it. I've downloaded it and will listen to it more, but if you're hoping for an in-depth descriptive review, I'm sorry, but give it a listen anyway...
I liked this. Mostly the first half of the album, but I might listen to it again in its entirety.
No real banger around, but a lof of great tunes. I really like the sum rather than any particular part.
Pretty cool album, I think I'd listen to this again
Why do I feel like I’ve heard of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and yet couldn’t tell you a single song by them? I couldn’t even tell you the genre. And yet, I’m almost certain I’ve heard them before. That’s a bit odd, isn’t it? Songs I already knew: None Favourites: Heads Will Roll, Faces After the first two tracks on this album, my hopes were high for something amazing. It was a very strong opening and I was immediately hooked. However, after these first few songs, the quality definitely dips a little until we get to the final song Faces, which again is very strong. I want to make it clear here that there were no bad songs on this album, but going from amazing down to good feels like a bit of a drop, despite still being obviously good. I especially liked the vocalist - her tone is great and very easy to listen to. Overall, I had high hopes for an incredible album, but in the end it was only very good. Still ain’t no bad thing though, eh?
This was my real introduction to Yeah Yeah Yeahs besides Heads Will Roll, because that's already iconic in itself. Karen O's voice is so soothing, and these songs sound so fun to see live. Also, I love the album cover. Fave track(s): Soft Shock, Dull Life, Dragon Queen
I knew the one song everyone knows but the full album was longer and better than i expected it to be and i really enjoyed it and will give it another listen.
"Heads Will Roll" is my second favorite Yeah Yeah Yeah's track, and I think it's a seminal song in the world of indie rock. It really captures their exciting, edgy yet clean sound, and excitement from Karen O who I think is infinitely cool and impressive. The rest of the album is tight. I think their hits tend to stand out a bit for this band- more than the average band that has really big songs. I liked it, but maybe not enough for a 5/5.
An indie rock classic. Dragon Queen was an old favorite, but Hysterical or Soft Shock may be my new standouts
I dig it. Yeah yeah yeahs have been on my radar, I knew a song on the album but I liked the whole thing, would explore more
Much better than I expected; really good.
It’s nice electronic rock with some great songs 4/5
BANCO. 8.5/10
This album doesn't hit as hard and feels more polished than the previous Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It still sits on the precipice of art rock and noughties indie which is a nice place to be.
I like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but I haven't listened to a whole lot of their music. I believe I have listened to It's Blitz! before, but probably only once. I was suprised that the recommended album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs doesn't include "Maps". "Hysteric" was the happy surprise from this album, but familiar tracks "Zero", "Heads Will Roll" and "Skeletons" are tracks that I have in my personal playlist too. I will listen to more from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Good album - like most of the songs. Indie/rock/garage kind of sound
Yup, they're pretty good. I don't quite like this album as much as Fever to Tell. Blitz has a much cleaner and pop-ier production, which suits the songs on this album well.
I find Yeah Yeah Yeahs imminently fun and irresistibly charming. The way they balance more catchy electronic elements into the mix on this album sees them expand their sound and make it poppier. They are an interesting band that kind of float back and forth between flirting with mainstream accessibility and more challenging tendencies. I enjoy both modes.
Another one I cheerfully listen to, but, their debut album is the one I love. Could listen to Maps daily and still love that track. On this one, love Heads will Roll, Soft Shock, Dull Life but just find them enjoyable to listen.
Heads will roll!
"It's Blitz" is the third studio album by the indie band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was received and pereceived as more dance-oriented. I would agree that the first two songs are very dance/disco-oriented but then the album goes more dramatic with the keyboards, guitars, drums and the lyrics appearing more personal in the remaining songs. This is a very good album. The music was written and recorded in the studio over a two month period which is unusual in that cost-crunching time frame. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs consist of Karen O (vocals), Brian Chase (drums, percussion) and Nick Zinner (guitar, keyboards, drum machine, bass). Their hit "Zero" gets the dance going. Synths, drum machine, hypnotic, classic Karen O. I love its chaotic ending. It's about escape. Be who you are; you're a zero so screw it. "Heads Will Roll" keeps the dance going but in an eerie way. String intro. In the video, a werewolf kills everyone including the band. Is there more meaning than just get on the dance floor? "Soft Shock" changes the dance party and is my favorite Yeah Yeah Yeahs' song along with "Maps." The synths are wobbly and again hypnotic at the beginning going into a great far-east type melody. Karen O's singing is great and about a relationship ending. The fourth song and third single "Skeletons" is again about a relationship ending. This is stark though with only wobbly synths in the beginning. The synths and drum machine change to almost a Scottish marching theme which ends in what sounds like a snowstorm. The drama builds eventually in "Runaway" with a slow piano beginning going into layered synths. She telling her man to runaway but wants him to stay. A second-half album highlight. "Hysteric" is the hidden gem on this album. Softer keyboards. Guitar. Drums. More tradtional rock song. Great keyboard melody later on. Karen's best singing and lyrics on the album, wanting her lover back. I have this album yet never really have listened to the whole album in depth. I was impressed. Not a bad song on the album and the songs get progressively more serious. A recommendation for this one and glad I bought it at some point in the past.
Pretty sweet album. So different from the last YYY album I had, and an improvement for the better imo. More chill with more focus on melodies. 8/10
Sounds like 2009 in the best possible way, very enjoyable. Good period synths sounds.
Cracking album.
Well produced dance/rock album. Great vocals, groovy electronics and bass, good guitars [alliteration ;)] favs - dull life - zero - skeletons - heads will roll
8/10
Yeah!
Surprisingly good album
Late 2000s indie classic. Karen O is an all-time great frontwoman. Album cover made me hungry.
The album surprised me as I had no knowledge going in. It was surprisingly good front to back. I enjoyed the energy of the songs. Favorites heads will roll and dragon queen.
I have never listened to this album before, but I really enjoyed the indie electronic sound to it. The vocals were very enjoyable and had a 90s punk vibe similar to Gwen Stefani in No Doubt.
I really enjoyed this album, I was excited to listen to a whole album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and this didn't disappoint. I'm now really excited to go listen to their new album from this year. I love the punky guitar riffs without the stressful sounds of punk that I hate so much. I really like the vocals and I think overall it has a cool sound. It's got so much variety with the acoustic versions and particularly loved the last track Faces.
Brilliant album, very enjoyable. Karen O is great. Very positive, melodic, easy to listen to. Would listen again. Just very good, very nice - if not completely life changing
Probably one of the best indie rock records of the first decade of the 2000s. Already the first song "Zero" sets the tone for the whole album with a lot of energy and also the music is very interesting. Then, after the impressive hit "Heads Will Roll" the project continues in great style until the end.
Surprised how much I liked this. A great find!
I love this album. I've always heard the popular songs by Yeah Yeah Yeah's like Maps or Heads Will Roll, but this album has a lot of hidden gems like Zero, Soft Shock, Skeletons, etc.
I'd heard 'Heads Will Roll' a while back and never listened to the full album. Nothing quite as strong as that though, and it definitely tailed off towards the end but a decent effort over all.
Very interesting. I like it.
Það er eitthvað við þetta band. Góð plata.
Surprisingly good. Never heard of them. Liked the album.
very good, will keep listening
Pretty good album. I liked the vibe of it
This album starts off a very decisive note but then seems to develop into a different direction. By the end of the listening, it almost dwindles completely. I have to admit that the melancholic note on which it ends it's just right up my alley. I very much enjoyed it but I understand why other people might think that it lacks that oomph to actually make it great.
некоторые акустические версии понравились больше неакустических, dull life прикольная (ну и head will roll заслуженно завирусилась), но в целом не мой вайб
It’s as if the YYYs got sucked into a synthesiser - in all the right ways. That being said, the acoustic extras highlight Karen O’s luxurious sound delightfully.
It’s funny that I got through over 100 albums before I started getting artists from *my* teen years. Well I didn’t really grow up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, except for “Maps” on Rock Band. Shoulda heard them more. August 8 2022
It oh
I like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Karen O is such a strong lead, and while this isn’t even my favorite album by them (Fever to Tell is) I think it has enough strength to rate highly.
First time listening to a full Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. And it's good. Would listen again for sure. But there is a bit in the middle or towards the end that it just sort of drags and I can't figure out why. This is in between a 3 and a 4 for me, but I'll bump it up because I really liked quite a bit of the album.
I’m giving it a 4 because I love the song Heads Will Roll (remix is better)! Overall I expected higher energy for every song because I was only familiar with that song, but I did enjoy it.
I really enjoyed this! I like how upbeat and dance-y lot of the songs are, and the acoustic ones are very pleasant, too! Heads Will Roll is of course great, but I also liked Zero and Runaway a lot.
Great but some songs sound like an apple commercial
This album is a fucking banger. The men cried out and the girls cried out
Fun album! Love the variety and pacing. Will definitely check out more yeah yeah yeahs
Banger after banger. I was expecting something more akin to their garage revival Fever to Tell, but this is just as great. Well-polished indie pop influenced by electropop dominating pop music at the time, but the vocal style is still very punk at heart. I've definitely heard "Heads Will Roll" before and glad this is the album it came from. Only a couple weak songs, and there's a mix of energetic dance tracks and heartfelt ballads, all of which use enveloping synths to create powerful and interesting effects. Favorites: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, Dull Life, Runaway, Dragon Queen, Hysteric
Big new thing at that time
I’ve never heard of this band or this album, but I do like 2000s indie rock. It feels much more produced and loud than the indie rock I know, which is not at all a bad thing. Turns out I do one song by this band, Heads Will Roll, as a meme song (I think the meme song is a remix, which is actually much worse in my opinion than the original). The rest of the album seems to be much more in line with what I was expecting for an indie band. I did kind of like the super high energy of the first two tracks, which is a bit of a shame as the rest of the album is much more mellow. Still a very good indie album. Fav Track: Soft Shock 4/5
sta guapo ytal osea es ckomo muy tranki pero no, esta perfe para escuchar tipico cuando vuelves en bus d noche y asi, d trankis vaya. Y tmb tiene el classic meme d cancion k todos conocemos asi como dato
It’s a pretty solid and creative album, favorite song was Hysteric. Singer has a wonderful voice!
Was not looking forward to this but liked it a lot more than I remembered.
A weird one. But one that I enjoyed quite a bit more than I expected. A few parts were a little jarring and distracting. Mostly it was very good as background working music though.
Leuke band, lekker energiek. Start van de plaat is geweldig en na een nummer of 4 wordt het iets minder spannend. Maar ik heb er met plezier naar geluisterd (2x zelfs!)
Jeetje, wat fris ineens!
This starts off just okay but then gets very good on the back side, which feels much less frantic and forced. As much as I like Karen O’s voice, she deploys the same tricks on song after song (especialy the rockers). “Soft Shock” and “Runaway” and “Dragon Queen” and “Hysteric” and “Little Shadows” are best cuts. All of the best ones are quieter and dreamier (mostly later in record), which together make for a satisfying ending. YYYs were certainly au courant and very much “now” back in its time, but (sigh) not so much anymore. Still this had them almost living up to their ( unjustifiably huge) hype. 3.6 > 4
Fun dance-rock with a fantastic vocalist.
Better album than Fever to Tell. Hadn't given the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as much of a serious listen before and I am glad I did. 4/5
enjoyed this album far more than i thought - even more than fever to tell. a sound that i didn't expect from the band, more mellow and easy to listen to
I really like Karen O and crew and had never listened to this album. Just familiar with the hits. Great album.
the year is 2003 and a wee 17 year old not-nigel is again crushed up against the stage at manc academy 2 for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. messy, noisy and at times incoherent punk rock. this album is not that. they clearly learnt how to record and produce music and developed a hell of a lot as a band. that said it's not actually a bad thing, this is a pretty good album produced in that awful period when guitar bands thought they were dance acts but it was like they'd never heard a dance track in their lives epitomised by the fucking klaxxons. some utter shite was produced around that time so this is refreshingly alright to listen to. yeah yeah yeahs would probably have a pretty good best of album, but the avante garde art punks would come out in hives at the suggestion.
Listening to this record was like eating Custard Cream crumbs out of a dumpster whilst riding a big dicked black man.
Yeah yeah yeah?
Opens with some huge synthy powerful beats. Loses power as it goes on although still some good songs. Really liked "Little Shadow" Karen O's voice is fantastic throughout.
karen o's distinct voice combined with a fusion of electronic melodies and alt rock instrumentals makes for a nice album
Very-very-very solid
Cool electronic disco with quite a few bangers, the quite track Hysteric stands out to me (although I wish the chorus was better). Overall, a good album.
Never heard of them before this. They are really good. What an album. She has a really great voice and the songs do differ a lot. Great sound
Ég hlustaði mikið á Fever to tell, en hafði ekki hugmynd um að þau hefðu gert eitthvað annað. En viti menn, þetta annað er bara ljómandi áheyrilegt og skemmtilegt líka.
The YYYs are a band I'm aware of but never really delved. Lots more dancey than i expected. Overall good though I think it will bite properly after several listens. Really liked Runaway. Engaging singing/lyrics from Karen O. Great production and distinctive unpredictable tunes.
Oh those were the days! I have good memories of this record and have nothing negative to say about it really, I love the sound and evolution of the band, I don’t have this on vinyl, I should get a copy. My girlfriend hates Fever to tell but she should like this one.
At times danceable and at times reflective, It's Blitz! sees Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the precipice of a change in their careers, with an album cover that's representative of the sounds inside. Favorites: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, Skeletons, Dull Life, Shame and Fortune, Runaway.
Yes yes yes
loved this album when it was first released and listening back, it still sounds effortlessly cool to my ears
loved it. very upbeat
Quite enjoyable! 8/10
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a three piece rock band in my mind; killer guitar and Karen O's lead force. It's Blitz! is just so damn dance-able. Keyboard, electronic drumbeats, and synths. Not what I think of when they come to mind but so damn fun, Reminded me that I should listen to We Are Pilots by Shiny Toy Guns. If there is a complaint, Yeah Yeah Yeahs love their long, drawn out, repetitive intros and endings to songs. But songs like Hysteric have almost a dreamy, haptic feel to them.
Just a great, muscular recording by a band at its peak
Love the mix of rock/punk and electronica. Feels very 2009 and I'm glad I revisited.
Also, an extended addition that's worth the extra time.
egg
03/17/2022 Full of energy and attitude. Sounds exactly like the 2000s, when all the music nerds were on Hype Machine trying to find the next alt rock masterpiece before anyone else.
Incredibly fun! The singles on this album I'd heard many times before and are great but this whole album hangs together really well
Yeah gotta love it
Yeah! Yeah! and again Yeah! Fewer "hits" than the last album by them, but I thought this one had a much more deep and dark sound. Really great stuff. I like this more than Fever to Tell, which I gave a 4, but I don't feel this is *quite* truly a 5.
1,001 albums... "It's Blitz!" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs This album took me by surprise in more than one way. First of all, it kicks the door open quite spectacularly with a swaggering, supremely confident opening track - something which made me immediately sit up and take notice. It's also much more dance-orientated (much as I hate that phrase) and keyboard heavy than I'd anticipated. In fact, it seems to - in some ways at least - sit in the very centre of a three-circle venn diagram labelled "pop," "rock" and "dance" in much the same way that New Order did at their best, not that the charismatic Karen O reminds you of Barney Sumner in any way at all. That said, my initial excitement did wane here and there and it's not quite the classic that the first song suggested it might be.
Not a bad album honestly. "Heads Will Roll" is the best song. 7/10
Such a great album. I liked one or two songs off earlier albums, but this was album was terrific
16th February 2022 Listened on the walk back to the office having met Austin for lunch and finished there. Surprised by how much I liked it. Hints of 80s glam, electro, and indie all rolled into one.
Loved it, mix between absolute bangers and slowed down acoustic versions.
I have some bad vibes with "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" for no good reason. However, listening to this album was a good experience to remember that rock could be just fun, even when the song themes are not exactly about funny things. I really liked it!
this is another album i had already heard, but it was maybe a year ago and it was in need of a relisten as i could remember nothing. im really glad i revisited, as i dont remember it being anywhere near as fun as it realistically is. easily one of the most impressive and danceable indie rock albums out there.
Observations that It's Blitz! is frontloaded are absolutely fair, but even listening for that, the album keeps my attention. This band can conjure a mood like no other, and it's one that Karen fits into seamlessly while remaining absolutely sincere and absolutely unique.
Good
I listened to this, wondering if there were actually two different bands on this album. The dance-beat centric songs were so incredibly different from the more melodic, atmospheric songs. I loved Skeleons, Hysteric and Little Shadow. Not so much the other songs, but I bet they'd be great live.
Surprise! This band is good.
What an opening "Zero" is- melodically strong, a perfectly based build to a crescendo of angular, fuzzed-out guitar figures. Its only downfall is the ridiculous amount of compression added towards the end "Heads Will Roll" is another winner and sounded out from the back of my mind as something I'd heard before, installed in my consciousness without ever knocking at the door. Its greatest strength is its simplicity, repeating one or two refrains over a single progression, driving forward to consume all in its path... including a lot of the rest of the album. From this point onward, "It's Blitz!" sounds a bit like a festival in the middle of the afternoon: before a lot of the more exciting stuff has kicked off, but an absolute pleasure to spend time with. The gentler, softer numbers succeed more for me: "Skeletons", "Hysteric" and "Little Shadow" are all gorgeous and jostle for a place at the top tier of this album. The other up-tempo tracks, "Dull Life", "Shame and Fortune" and "Dragon Queen", still carry off an intriguing alchemy of disco, punk and late '00s art-rock, but don't quite rock to the same effect as the first two tracks. Vocalist Karen O is a great fit for the material, sounding at-ease and on-edge, owning the songs with every sneer, yelp and occasional burst of sincerity. The synth-driven arrangements are right in time with the boom of the late noughties, without having particularly aged since- there remains a nice amount of guitar in the mix for anyone ready to argue the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "sold out" here. Producer Nick Launay is well known for his work on most of Nick Cave's albums dating back to "Junkyard": what a different experience this one was. "It's Blitz" is to the point, straightforward and fun to a point that may alienate some self-professed music critics, but for me its immediacy wins out.
Ptn mais y'a des bons albums après les années 70? WTF Prefs: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Skeletons, Dull Life, Runaway, Hysteric Moins pref: Dragon Queen
Pretty great. Both loud and quiet, driven and loose. Nicely executed and well produced.
An unexpected gem of an album. Not a fan of 2000s indie-disco but this represents a really strong entry for the genre. Karen O’s voice is totally captivating, equal parts vulnerable and commanding with more than a hint of Siouxsie thrown in the mix. Superior to their preceding album and does not fall fowl of the same introspective tropes. Brilliant, in other words.
Excellent showing of what this kind of pop can be.
heads will rolllllll
What a vast improvement over the other album of theirs I listened to! I really enjoyed this album...they definitely found their sound and were able to much better compliment the vocals with the music. I'll be going back to re-listen to a couple of the songs for sure!
I thought this album was SO much better than Fever to Tell. Had highs and lows throughout the album and I actually enjoyed it overall. Heads Will Roll is fantastic.
6 years added a lot of polish. I gave their first album 1 star, this had VAST improvement. I dug it a lot.
Varsinkin Heads Will Roll ja Dull Life potki kovaa. Erittäin positiivinen, vahvan nelosen arvoinen yllätys.
Actually liked this a lot! There were some really great tracks in there, I don't know why I've never really listened to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I heard Maps and was like "not for me," but didn't really give any of their other stuff a chance. Zero was the standout for me.
A perfect mix of The Bangles, Garbage and No Doubt. In fact, if Susanna Hoffs, Shirley Manson and Gwen Stefani could somehow have a baby together, well, that would be weird. But if Jack and Meg White would have had a baby, that baby would likely be a lot like Yeah Yeah Yeahs vocalist Karen O. Hell, they probably would have named her Karen O. Are we counting the bonus acoustic versions in our review? Because I prefer some of those to the original version. This also led me to the band's great cover of Big Star's "Thirteen", which means something. Just an overall great listen, acoustic tracks included. It falls maybe an iota short of classic status, but since it's new to me, I'm hoping multiple listens will improve it up that small notch.
This was a cool album. She has a great voice - sounds a lot like Chrissie Hynde - and the songs were catchy and interesting. Highlight was probably "Heads Will Roll" but I also like "Zero" a lot. I think her voice turns a lot of these songs from 2's to 4's but they're still 4's regardless.
I had never listened to this band before, but I really liked this album. I love pop music that manages to be a bit challenging in terms of its lyrics. Musically, it works great and the production is excellent 4/5
Having just reviewed "Fever to Tell" a couple of weeks ago, I was glad to get another Yeah Yeah Yeahs album to review. That one hadn't been my favorite, but I knew there was something about the band that I really liked. I really enjoyed this one a lot more! I like the groove of it very much. I even found that I had known and liked a YYYs song, "Heads Will Roll," a song I've heard here and there without knowing the artist. (I see that it was mashed up with Thriller on Glee.) It is my favorite on the album. It had everything I liked about the first album with a much more polished sound.
This is the second Yeah Yeah Yeahs album to be served to me on 1001. I enjoyed this one much more than the first one. I guess it is the dancier vibe to the album. But, it also could simply be my mood today versus the other day...
Iznenadilo me pozitivno, posluso sam i ne mogu reci da mi je krivo. Nek pjesme jesu malo dosadnjikave, ali sve u svemu nelose. Cetvorka za iznenadenje
Couple of songs on there I didn't realize were them.
Good stuff
Pop así como épico. Me ha gustado.
Energetic modern sounding pop for the unmasses. Fabulous as a live band, equally fantastic when recorded, this album has a couple of absolute bangers, and several more contemplative tracks, which as a whole makes for a great balance. Top tracks: Zero, Heads will roll, Shame and fortune
Enjoyed it. Was very familiar with Heads Will Roll, liked it then, liked it now. The rest was also good. Though the tone of album really chained from the first few songs to the last. Which is not a problem in itself but the tonal differences were so big that I caught myself wondering if it was still the same album.
It's like LCD Soundsystem for your mom and with really nothing it sets out to tell you, it's just kinda there and wants to piss off fans of the previous albums, but in retrospect over a decade later, fuck it, you'll probably like it too!
Pop así como épico. Me ha gustado.
It's a fun album with a distinct sound. I wouldn't mind putting the Yeah Yeah Yeahs into a rotation of music to listen to more often than once, so for that, 4 stars. The acoustic songs at the end of the album are also a nice touch. Great to hear the song without the heavy synth presence.
Really good. Listen to the accoustic versions again for sure.
I love this album! It starts off with two absolute bangers and then slowly descends into a more relaxed melodic vibe. Listened to the album twice in a row I enjoyed it that much!
Heads Will Roll was Def their best song. And I wanted every song to be as good as that one
4/5 that was a surprise! nice!
The more I listened to it the more I liked it. The first two tracks don’t really flow with the remainder of the album. Some of the tracks had hints of the Pierces and the Bangles. Enjoyable and certainly one I would listen to again
FUCKING PARTY BOPS
Really good and really enjoyed this album
Really great stuff - great sound and voice - a good surprise
Yes yes yes
Great album, great band
Nice mix of energetic punk indie and regular indie songs. Love Heads will Roll.
really enjoyed that, definitely adding to the list
Cool
Downloaded on iTunes back in 2009 and am very familiar with a number of tracks
Very good. Same impact on me as hearing LCD Soundsystem for the first time. Two sides of the same coin.
3.5/5. Surprised me, I liked it more than I thought I would.
Wow this is a damn good album, less arty, more polished than Fever to Tell and just a notch below. The dance tracks are very good, the more arty tracks are good but as I say a notch below Fever to Tell. A nice discovery 3.75 🌟
I'm a new fan.
Good time.
A pure delight to listen to. 4/5
Great! Bit clean for my tastes but it was still nice.
very cool
Yeah... yeah... yeah...
good album
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
Not perhaps as influential as their earlier work but a great example of talent, production and vision delivering a cohesive outcome that stands the test of time.
Really liked this one
This was an album I poo-pood quite a bit for a long time, and listening to it now I'm not entirely sure why I did that. I can get down with this.
Heads Will Roll - best song of all time? Dull Life, Runaway, Hysteric, and Little Shadow all great
The acoustics seem a bit disjointed, like 2 albums stuck into one, however both are quite good albums
7.6
This was cool! Side A noticably stronger than side B, but an enjoyable listen with very good highs, and somewhat conform/unremarkable lows. 3.5/5
Some super good ideas and what a voice. Got a little too Sabaru commercial at times.
Started off more New Wave then I expected, but the sound grew on me. By the end, I could totally see taking a long open window road trip with this blasting away on the speakers.
4.5
Good Shit
Sheesh its a banger. Always bop to heads will roll
Decent album, electronic sound, one of the better ones on the list.
First notes yeah ! Wasn’t expecting a song like skeletons. Dull life is exactly what I want out of a song.
Bigger fan of their earlier stuff when it was more raw/garage sounding. Not as big a fan of the electronic albums. Heads will Roll is still a tune though - same with Zero. Plus you can’t mess with Karen O
I liked this. It was interesting, a bit rocky but not too much. Kind of like a rockier Regina Spector.
Godu
Very nice synths mixed with Indie rock guitars. Indie dance golden age vibe. Starts of very powerfully, ends with multiple acoustic ballads. Those are, still, very mesmerizing as the singers voice beautifully carries them
I wasn't feeling it at first and i figured it was carried by "Heads Will Roll" but this album rocked. The influence on the music of the early 2010's is clear.
Production: 15/20 Songwriting: 12/20 Innovation: 11/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 14/20 =62 Zero and Heads will roll doing a LOT of the work in that rating
I liked it.
Good fun album.
4.5
Po Na Na bangers
Es eufórica. Primer álbum de las lista de ultimas dos decadas
Good, loved the last song
This album was really fun to come back to for me. When I first got into YYYs back in the day I was an indie rock or die kid to the bone, so I loved their first album because it just straight up rocked so hard. I then listened to It's Blitz! and was like "aw man this is lame they're all dancey and selling out," and that sort of pretentious youngster attitude shit. Several years ago though, I really started to explore electronic, dance-rock, and synth-punk stuff a lot more and found myself getting waaaaay into it. So now this album sounds fantastic to me! Karen O has always had such an incredibly emotive voice. It can be raw and wild while still sounding beautiful, which turns out is a great fit for this dancey album. "Heads Will Roll" is a bop of course, but my other standouts were "Soft Shock," and the sweet "Little Shadow." It was also cool to see long time YYYs producer Dave Sitek (member and producer of TV On The Radio) let loose a bit with the dance drums and stuff. The following year he released a fantastic solo album "Maximum Balloon" that features Karen O and a bunch of other artists on some real fun dance tracks. Would highly recommend. Got to love 1001 albums for making me go back and listen to this gem that my dumb younger self thought was too pop. SMH
I had the remix of Heads Will Roll on high rotation in my car and spinning classes back in the day. I was pleasantly surprised to hear so many other catchy songs on this album. I like the combination of synths and guitars throughout and the way the songs build in intensity. Dull Life really rocks. The singer reminds me a bit of Emily Haines of Metric. Good song-writing overall - they stay with you pretty qucikly.

Finally a good electro pop album. Zero checks a lot of boxes for me. HEADS WILL ROLLL. The album starts to peter out after that but its got great electro rock grooves throughout
Underappreciated alternative band from the 00s, the album itself has very different feelings which speaks to the range of this band.
Good stuff. Debated 3 or 4... Rounding up.
I like it. Added to my collection. I knew some songs already.
When I first heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs I was blown away. I heard them a lot a lot, and now I generally avoid them. I realized in listening to this album, I definitely avoid because of overexposure. They are so solid and I will come back to this band hard in a decade or so.
Lush vocals, great musicianship. What more could you want?
Production: 15/20 Songwriting: 12/20 Innovation: 11/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 14/20 =62 Zero and Heads will roll doing a LOT of the work in that rating
Mad that it took me so long to get to it
Similar to Metric in the way her voice floats above the instruments with seemingly sparse midrange.
I hadn't listened to this album since it first came out. It's well produced with some really great songs. Nice snapshot of that era
YES YES YES
Like it!!
Really like this. It's more modern than I was expecting.
Never really listened to them other than the hits. Enjoyed this one!
Great album— loved it
nice vocals. i think its a bit dated tune. but same as below. will listen again but not intentionally
Enjoyable synth
Great album, not the best of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but a great album
I knew the song “Off With Their Heads” prior to hearing the full album. Overall I thought it was fun. I didn’t write anything down while listening and I don’t know any of the song titles, but it was a solid listen. I think more than anything it was nice to have something more ‘modern’. I think I liked the front half more than the back, but as I’ve mentioned before that is something that happens a lot to me, even with my favorite albums. I wish I had taken more notes, haha.
Not my preferred style, but well done. I enjoyed the acoustic versions a lot.
High energy excellent modern indie. some great haunting tunes near the end, solid album throughout with no weak tracks
3.5 5 stars for firs two songs, 2-4 for rest of album
This band is so much fun. Heads will roll is a classic (remix is better though)
very dancable pop rock album
5/10
Fun album! Definitely know heads will roll and that's mixed by a lot of EDM artists. Not my favorite, but could see why people like it.
Dragon Queen is a very annoying song. Some songs like Hysteric, Faces and Dull life are very cool.
It's Alright!
Decent pop but unmemorable
This was cool for summer but doesn’t feel like I’ll return to it. The remixes of “Heads Will Roll” are better than the original recording
Mid
meh meh meh
Fav songs: runaway, soft shocks Japanese breakfast vibes but not my fav!
I actually liked this album more than I expected. I thought it started off really strong, but the first four songs all being ones that I ended up saving. Obviously I’ve heard heads will roll through the remix. Soft shock was probably the standout for me, including the acoustic version which really emphasized the singer‘s voice.
Picture this: it’s march of 2009. Obama has just been inaugurated. You work for a “tech startup” that’s really just a blog website. You live in bushwick. You go to a house party with a pair of shutter shades on, and dance to the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album all night. I was born in the wrong generation.
Weirdly enjoy this album more than their older one, but it’s a 3.5 at best which I don’t think I can reasonably rate any higher
High energy and pretty catchy. I feel like I should've heard of this band, as they seem to be part of the 2000s pop music Renaissance I theorized, but this is my first real listen of them. You guys probably know by now that I have a thing for contemporary pop artists who are not bounded by any specific style or genre, and I think that in doing so, they were able to find their own style, like in the case of this album. The production was pretty enjoyable, the singer was skilled and had some inventive melodies to share. I'm feeling a decently strong three.
Solid album, not my favourite of productions. She’s a great artist, good songs. Just got a little same same for me that sound.
Whoever said the first two songs were the only goods ones was right. Steep falloff into boring indie.
I somehow missed this band. Tjis was a fun album with a couple of touching tracks
I like the energy of this one.
This was fun.
I had a nice time listening to this record. If you make me choose between listening to like, The Killers or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, i’m going Yeahs every time
Not a bad listen, couple of hits, overall solid tracks and can listen to the whole album.
Felt like I just got three of the same album in a row. This was pretty good though.
Pretty Decent.
Compliqué à noter et à décrire. L'album est fort dans la recherche artistique mais j'ai pas accrocher à tout les morceaux.
Revisit but decent enough on first listen.
Nothing special, but I really enjoyed some of the songs
- Yeah yeah yeah, I can already tell this won’t be my thing - Ok actually, Skeletons is kinda fire, might've judged this too soon based off Heads Will Roll
Tracks 2 and 3 are still delicious anthems but it goes downshill after that.
Yeah It was alright Synth noises were a bit much
3/5 have to listen to more was good tho rating cld change
A few really good songs, the rest are decent but unremarkable. 3.5/5
Some songs were weird some were cool. Fav:Heads will roll
Overall Rating - 3.35/5 (6.70/10). Overall a solid album. Not entirely my taste, but good.
This music is right up my alley. It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it. Love Karen’s voice. It’s a fun album.
Really solid first half that drops off on the second half. I do love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but have never listened to this album all the way through before.
bangers interspersed with music that i dont remember
A fun listen.
I really like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from a playlist point of view, where you’ve got their best songs one after another. Their indie disco stylings really suit the playlist. Album wise they do lose a bit of momentum but Karen O ensures there’s always something to enjoy
Pas mal. Ça s'écoute bien
This was a strong 3 for me, but I thought after the first couple of tracks it fell off too much to earn a higher rating.
It's a good enough record that I "get" why the critics love. It's not really my sound, but I didn't hate listening to it.
I enjoyed their 2003 album, reviewed for this about 30 albums ago. This one from 2009, not so much. Vocals more strident, melodies more lacking. This is OK, but in light of what gets omitted from this list, we could have done without a second one from these folks.
Such a fun and nostalgic album. Although my favourite track is actually a remix of heads will roll!
fun listen
This album had a lot of atmosphere. I liked it!
I like the energy and feel of both the dancier, bubbly, synthy songs and the more stripped back, delicate ballads. It's much more my kind of thing than the garage rock of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s debut. In the final third of the record there is a bit of power loss as they move into something more introspective, but it’s still a very respectable effort with some cracking stand out singles.
Conozco su canción épica Heads will rock, es muy buena, pero el álbum no en general no es de mi gusto
Blitz (verb): a swift, intensive, and sudden attack or concerted effort. Originally a military term for "lightning war," it is now commonly used across several contexts to describe any overwhelming rush or concentrated campaign. Is this really blitz? No, not really. The well made, sophisticated synth constructions run the gamut from groovy, to dancey, to comtemplative, to maudlin, but never gather up the steam to call itself a blitz. Maybe 'It's Canter!' would've been a better title.
sounds like scott pilgrim music. i liked it more than i thought i would. 3.5
First 1 and last 2 tracks are 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 Shame it's a whole load of mid in the middle
viele ideen, viele genres, das meiste funktioniert
thinking about how there were so many dubstep remixes of head will roll, what a time
The base average of music to me Best Song: Dull Life Worst Song: Skeletons
Early aughts indie and I have a fraught relationship. I have never understood the cultural adulation assigned to bands like The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys. At the same time, the contemporaneous garage wave -- Hives, Vines, White Stripes -- possessed something worthwhile. This seems like the Rosetta Stone that translates across the two. I'd be lying if I didn't tell you upfront that I'm a bit sick of 'Heads Will Roll' but that may not be the fault of Karen O and her bandmates. Overall, the music is nearly a disco band (different rhythms) with a punk edge (except none of the politics or distortion). The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a bit evanescent the more I think about them. They sit in a space between genres that seemed entirely natural and common at the time but eludes precise description, now. They remind me of a less-dark Metric or a less-dreamy Naked and Famous. The music is emotive but not terribly *emotional*. There's a stirring quality to 'Skeletons' but it doesn't quite climax. The band owes a lot of their atmosphere to the post-rock movement -- those reverb-drenched guitar leads in the background are lifted straight from the likes of Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The songs are much less doomy than GY!BE but they're also not hopeful. Those contrasts -- disco but not as dancy, the dulled emotional content, the failure to climax on some songs -- those read as typical to me of this moment in time. There's a detachment to the music from this movement; a sort of musical anhedonia that fit the mood for millennials like me. We were all the way into the Great Recession at the time of this album's release and if you were in your early 20's, either fresh out of training and struggling to find work or staring at your elders doing that, it was easy to feel the verve sapped from the jubilation of your young adult years. It's Blitz! sounds like precisely the uneasy party that I spent a lot of time at. Everyone knew what we were trying to forget. The real world would come crashing in on Saturday or Sunday morning, along with the hangover you were probably starting to truly experience. In the end, it's of a time. It's competently executed and it's groovy enough to dance to. It possesses emotions but it's not going to give you any catharsis. It's the musical equivalent of the emotional blue balls of an entire generation, scarred by growing up in a youth culture that scorned anyone who showed a genuine love for something -- which parallels today's youth's fear of being "cringe". I think it's fair to say that you must listen to this. On the other hand, I also think it's very reflective of a categorically bad time for popular music. it's not the fault of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but they were experiencing symptoms of the slow decline of rock music. Their institutional disaffection is pitch-perfect for the arch, wry demeanor of 2009's unhealthy relationship to sarcasm. Rock & roll runs on authenticity -- whether real or feigned -- and this sort of distant, reserved music can't be rock for long. Even the world's most famous song about feeling numb feels less drenched in Ativan than this. I think people should listen to indie rock from the aughts as a warning. 3/5
Here’s an album from another New York band, featuring indie rock music. The deluxe release includes a few acoustic versions of tracks from the album. The acoustic versions are pretty pleasant. Overall the album is acceptable, although none of the songs are fabulous.
So modern! Only... 17 years old... D: I have their first album (because who doesn't love 'Maps'), and I also listened to 'Heads Will Roll' a lot. The tracks are all pretty decent, so I'm not sure why it doesn't grab me, but maybe the guitars (and vocals) are a little too loud and/or sharp for my preference.
I could learn to like the Yeah,Yeah, Yeahs.
Few good songs then generally decent.
It felt very 2009. Nothing crazy, just very middle of the road
Сара 3 Марко 4
Actually a pretty good album. Once again, I wish for half stars. Rounding down in this case.
I've heard a couple of their tracks. Definitely interesting
Heads will Roll is great (the remix is better). Album is fine. 3-ish
