solid!
Really enjoyed Zero and Heads Will Roll. When I hear Heads Will Roll I think of the movie "Project X"!!
Love this album so much! Gets better with time, too. I have to admit that it’s mostly a bunch of singles, the songs don’t all blend like a good “album” album.
I like some of the slower songs.
Really good balance of electric music and rock. Always love a female voice in rock.
Nice vibe for a post punk album. Maybe they influenced Black Country, New Road later on?
I know the band because of the great remix of their Heads Will Roll, and while the original song is alright the A-Trak version is way cooler. I like how the female vocals are in the foreground of every song and that their sound is consistent, even the acoustic songs at the end of the album weren't that different from the rest. They remind me of an earlier prototypical version of The Dø. It's not my favorite style to listen to, but I respect the coherence in style.
Really liked this one I already knew heads will roll
I like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. This is one of their albums I didn't get into as much as their first, I think its because this more mellow and more slickly produced. This album sounds like it is dance floor ready, I didn't mean that in a good way. Still love Karen's voice.
An album that's definitely worth more than just the hits. I'll definitely be returning to more of these songs. Overall a fun time with some great vocals and performances
Pretty damn good album Listened to it while on highway 4 out of 5
Acoustic versions on the deluxe edition are great. Album has a great vibe Anne some real standout songs. Can’t go wrong with Karen O.
Liked this one a lot more than I thought. Rating: 4.2
I'd never listened to anything from these guys beyond Heads Will Roll, but this is a good find. This album fucking rocks. My favorite track is Dull Life, and Heads Will Roll may actually be my least favorite.
The remix of heads will roll is infinitely better than the original. Does not make this album any leds fun though
Cracking album.
Despite this album coming out during peak Indie times when I was in high school they never came across my radar. I was into Vampire Weekend, Two Door Cinema Club, Bloc Party etc.. Didn't expect too much from this but I really enjoyed this album, and would probably listen again. Favourite tracks: Hysteric and Heads Will Roll.
Great YYYs album, I put it right under Fever to Tell (their best)
I liked the album. I've often heard something from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs that has convinced me more than their debut album. This album is one of them. I like the singer's voice. I'm looking forward to more songs from the band. 4/5
I was not expecting there to be more than one Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums on this list, but I guess I honestly don't know a lot about them. Similarly to "Fever to Tell" this was fun and it's clear that it's something I probably would have liked a lot if I had checked it out when it came out.
Weird not hearing heads will roll as the remix, but the whole album is actually really solid.
Heads Will Roll if you think this album doesn’t improve your Dull Life. But let’s not be Hysteric about it.
Always nice to get a more modern pick, and despite knowing some YYYs songs, I’ve never listened to an album so this was a nice treat. Female vocalists are always a big plus and I quite like this style of music too. Again I wish I could give half stars but based on how I’ve rated everything else, this can get 4
Vocalist sounds like a female Mark Knoffler meets Bjork. 4th song in - I really like this. It's captivating. I like that the songs are really different even though the instrumentation is the same. But there's a cohesiveness to the album. Well done!
I’d never heard of these but I really enjoyed this album. Never heard a song on this album so for me to give it 4 stars means it’s good!
Heads Will Roll is one of the top songs of the 00’s, full stop. Zero is great too. It’s a solid album throughout.
Jolly good
I liked the consistency of the sound. Listen to it a couple times in a row
Love this. I've been a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for a long time, have seen them live and the acoustic version of Hysteric was played at my wedding. Across their albums I've always found there are some significant high points but there can be a bit of inconsistency which is why it's a 4 but it's still brilliant and Karen O is a force of nature.
Very fun album
Quite beautiful. I like it.
This had a really good punkish vibe with strong vocals
I was a big fan of Fever To Tell but then kind of lost track of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, apart from catching the odd single release. This album is very listenable but I think the band work best when they have that high energy, punkier vibe. Honourable mention for the acoustic version of Soft Shock, though.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs make synthesizer-based alt rock with danceable beats, in which the most recognizable element is lead singer Karen O's sweet, strong voice. Their music is version of minimalism found in alt pop: simple chord progressions played with a rhythmic complexity. It's Blitz is a great collection of songs - catchy, danceable songs with a generally uplifting tone and message.
did not know "heads will roll" by was by the yeah yeah yeahs. song goes so hard.
A little more filler than Fever to Tell, but some really great songs to lift it.
Off with your head Dance til you're dead Heads will roll Heads will roll Heads will roll On the floor Glitter on the wet streets Silver over everything The river's all wet You're all chrome Dripping with alchemy Shiver stop shivering The glitter's all wet You're all chrome The men cry out the girls cry out The men cry out the girls cry out The men cry out, oh no Not bad. Or at least, not as bad as the lyrics might make you think it could be. 4/5
A band I’ve heard of but not listened to. Pleasantly surprised - maybe just because this was a Monday morning album and I needed something upbeat but this hit all the right notes. A couple of tracks fell flat on the 2nd half for me but overall a decent album that will make me go back and listen to their other work.
beautiful
Heard before Saved 7/10 Top track: Heads Will Roll
Was surprised how deep and good this album is. A joy to rediscover Karen O.
A beautiful album, I especially love the more ethereal songs.
Rating: 7.5/10 Very good album overall. Really enjoyed the dance/disco influences throughout, the first half was especially strong and catchy. The production was also a standout, there were a lot of intricate details in the instrumentation and everything sounded great. They also did a good job building the slower songs, the songs would start off minimalistic and then slowly build as they progressed. The second half is a decrease in quality compared to the first but most of this album is great. Favorite songs: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, Skeletons, Dull Life, Dragon Queen, Hysteric. Worst song: Runaway.
I wasn’t blown away by this on the first listen, but it's a grower and I was enjoying by the third listen, especially the first 3 tracks...catchy dance that reminds me a bit of Feist. Favourite track: Zero / Heads Will Roll
Her voice is good and also music. Interesting discovery but not my favorite album
Call me a sucker for late '00s indie alternative but this just hits the spot. I've heard Heads Will Roll about 1,000 times but find myself enjoying some of the deeper cuts even more. 4/5
Love this album!
Great stuff.
So good
This one took me a few listens through. It's a good album, a really good album, and I've added some of the tracks to my liked songs. The thing is, there's nothing outstanding or ground breaking for the time this was released, so I don't think it's quite 5 star worthy.
Great Album! 4/5
Somehow I had never listened to anything by this band before this, so I was excited. At first I was getting a Siouxie vibe, which is not my favorite, but the album was many-layered and diverse. Favorite song: Runaway. Worth another listen. I was surprised this was only their third album as it seemed like they've been around forever.
I immediately loved the EP and the first record by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I also really enjoyed the second full length. I used to see Brian Chase on the B62 bus in the early aughts when I was living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. But by 2009 I had already mostly moved on from the YYY and so this record didn't hit the same way the earlier stuff had. Slowly, over time I absorbed parts of it here and there so today it is a rare thing (fifth or sixth time in 15 years?) to listen to it all the way through with attention. I can really hear the Dave "TV on the Radio" Sitek production in the first few tracks maybe more than in his previous production work with them. I don't know what to make of the merging but I'm mostly here for it. Karen O has always had some lyrics that don't quite land for me all the time, but I appreciate the chances that she takes in that when they do land they're more powerful than if she had played it safe all along. This album is no different in that regard. Musically satisfying, lyrically punchy with the occasional line that while a dud still has a charm. It's not getting 5 stars, but I have very few complaints about the record overall. I wonder if maybe it would've benefitted from cutting it by a track for an even more focused listening experience. I'd likely pull a slower number even though they are quite solid; it's just because I like my YYY at their most uptempo and angsty. I don't know if I need the ballady-lullaby-like Karen O in her feelings as much as I need the angry, snarling critical Karen in my ears.
Some good stuff and some okay stuff. A generally enjoyable album that had a really strong first half and a decent second half. I felt they were at their best when going more upbeat but more poetic when slowed down. This is the kind of album that made me wish half stars were allowed as I'm between a 3 and a 4.
bangers hysteric - acoustic good for wedding song
awesome with a good beat
Exquisite and unique piece of music. Must have listened to heads will roll and Skeletons over 200 times. The rest of the album keep a very tasteful tone, but it all would sum up to 8.5/10.
It's alright, better than average
Really great listening - never heard any of these songs before :-)
Not their best album, but a great reminder of their ability to make fun music
A great album. A few amazing songs and a handful of decent ones. Karen O has a great voice and I do like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Although I do prefer her colab album with Dangermouse.
fun album
There were some really standout songs on this album. They weren't the most popular ones either. Will definitely listen to this album again. Nice pacing and mood.
A favourite for over a decade and it still holds up great.
The disco rock sounds works really well on this album. The maximalist impulses are tempered by the fact that the music is well layered. There is a good mix of upbeat and downbeat tracks culminating in the swelling ‘Little Shadows.’ Overall, I really enjoyed this album. It is very much of its time but I really like its sound.
7/10
I was only familiar with their song “Maps” before listening to this album. I loved the vibes of this album.
I especially liked the acoustic versions.
Do I like power pop. Yeah Yeah.
Well that was unexpected! Highly enjoyable and energetic. "Dull Life" hooked me with its sparse, dark opening, transforming to a thumper with sting. More listening to happen.
Yeah yeah yeah
Wanted to listen to it again. That’s been fairly rare
3.7
I actually enjoyed every song on here but “Heads Will Roll” is the reason this is a 4 instead of a 3.
Very good album. I've heard some of these songs before but never attributed them to the YYYs. Will have to give another listen sometime.
Good stuff.
Loved it, early 2000s alt with strong vocals and guitar rhythms and driving beats
Of all the albums we've heard so far, this more than any other makes me wish we could give half stars. It's a tremendous album, one of the top 2-3 of 2009, but it's not *quite* good enough for 5 stars. The pacing is a little off, and it ends on bit of a whimper. That and well, there's one YYYs album better. Consider this a 4.5 that got knocked down by the system.
very good
Maps may be their signature song; but this felt like a better album overall. I don't know if I'm getting use to their style or if it really is just less chaotic. I'll have to listen to both this and Fever to Tell a few more times to figure out which one I liked more.
This is a well conceived and catchy album. Cohesive throughout with a number of songs that you likely know but don’t know that well. They own a unique sound and groove.
I liked the faster ones, in particular.
I loved playing maps I’m rockband back in the day. Really fun to hear their full album
Been a fan of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Karen O for a while but haven’t given this album a full listen before today. Everyone has heard of ‘Heads Will Roll’ and it absolutely deserves the praise it gets. It’s a fun, macabre toned song you can’t help but dance to. I think ‘Shame And Fortune’ deserves a little more fame. The 80s synth with the modern indie alt rock is the perfect backing over catchy, repetitive words. Realistically, it’s Karen O’s voice that keeps me coming back. I’ve noticed the songs are all face value. The beauty in emotional vulnerability and lack of depth in the lyrics helps the audience relate and feel validated. It’s a great album overall so I’m giving it a 4 but to me, the lack of questioning and resonance takes a star away.
I completely forgot about Zero, which I LOVE! I started playing the album while I was cooking breakfast - the track instantly put me in a great mood and I was dancing all over the kitchen to it. I was familiar with Heads Will Roll and think it holds up. I didn’t know the rest of the album but thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely be adding Zero to my running playlist and will come back to this album.
This gets an automatic 4 because a couple of the songs are already on my main playlist. Love the YeahYeahYeahs and Karen O.
It's pretty nice
I was pleasantly surprised by this album! It was an easy listen.
This is a bit of a nostalgic hit, but also such an evolution of sound from Fever to Tell (there was an album in between of course). Zero and Heads Will Roll are two of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs all-time best tracks, and the rest of the album quickly goes into more of a pop-rock/soft rock vibe, largely doing away with some of the punk-rock vibes that made the Yeah Yeah Yeahs so distinctive. But amazingly it still works and is a great example of a band really evolving their sound in a way that works and makes many of these tracks really iconic. Karen O's vocals and lyricism really stand out here. Runaway in particular is a standout track that is really evocative for me.
So good. If Maps was also on this album then I might have rated this five stars.
This started out five stars and dropped off in quality after the third song. The rest of the album was great too, though. I overall greatly enjoyed this.
Some of these songs are hard to escape
A fierce dance punk record that I will be returning to.
Not usually a pop fan, but I like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Maps is regularly in my playlists. They do a nice job blending electronic music and loud, fuzzy guitar with a punky dance pop sensibility. It works well for them. Some of the songs on this album are pretty melancholic, but are pretty solid. They disappoint people looking for the entire album to be like Heads Will Roll. Not every song hits for me, but there is plenty of goodness on this record.
Really enjoyed this one, I'll be listening to it again.
Really solid album. Definitely a step up from the previous one we listened to. One thing I really like about this is the production value/sound editing of this album. It still has enough grit to still make u say “ya fuck the man” but very clear and balanced vocals and instrumentation that makes it actually pleasurable to listen to. This sound really dominates the indie rock genre for awhile around this time circa MGMT, M83, etc. idk if they started it but they definitely put a good stamp on it. Good variety for an indie rock album which sometimes hard to find.
With a month removed from our first Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I’m not sure if they’ve grown on me or if I was always going to like them and Fever To Tell was a bad starting point. This anlbum also feels much more mature and sentimental, which is a bonus for me, even if they still repeat lyrics in every song. Heads Will Roll passes Tom Haverford’s “is it a banger?” test. Other good songs are Zero, Dull Life, Runaway, and Hysteric. I’ve really come around on this band and I think it’s a four.
I'm glad we got this album "It's a Blitz! (2009)" so soon after listening to "Fever to Tell (2003)". You can really tell the change in sounds that the band went through. In 2003 they felt kinda punk rock. This album feels more synthy party music (at least for the first half). I would love to know if this was a conscious decision by the band, or if this was just a natural flow with the rest of music in the time.
Personal favorite YYY album.
A textbook example of noisy guitar bands of the noughties going 'synthpop'. Some of these tracks have big fat analogue synths Gary Numan would recognise. But a really really strong set of songs, slightly more guitar heavy on the second side, and all built absolutely for singing along to at Reading midway through the evening.
I would probably give this a 4.5 if I could but it didn’t quite have enough to get to a 5. Really enjoyed this album and it’s always a surprise when you find something fairly new dispute growing up when this was released. Fun with different levels and vibes.
I’ve heard the hits, but this album really rocks that vibe, distinctive, singer voice with a great electronic/rock mixture, had me grooving.
Pretty good! I like Runaway in particular.
Like it a lot. Heads will roll is future classic for sure. Good stuff!
I don't think I've listened to an album in its entirety from 2009 since 2009. Made me giddy in a nostalgic way, it's the perfect encapsulation of an era.
Zero: 4/5 Heads Will Roll: 5/5 Soft Shock: 4/5 Skeletons: 4/5 Dull Life: 4/5 Shame and Fortune: 4/5 Runaway: 5/5 Dragon Queen: 4/5 Hysteric: 4/5 Little Shadow: 4/5 Faces: 4/5 Avg.: 4.2
Always recognize YYYs when I hear on radio. No complaints. But the entire album was a great surprise. I like YYYs!
I sometimes get the feeling that if I heard most of the mainstream, electropop music from the era this album released, then I would've liked it a lot more than I did at the time, because this whole album has the same vibe as that dance heavy, bass-y synth sound that every pop singer wanted to jump on in the early 2010s, but here, perhaps due to not hearing every track as its own single, I appreciate the songs here a lot more, despite it being tonally similar to those songs. I mean, its not like this album didn't have mainstream hits, but I heard songs like Head Will Roll just enough to be intrigued before it disappeared, rather than hearing it for the whole decade because the charts fail to have radio-friendly hits, before radio itself became obsolete. Any way, this album gives off that mainstream pop vibe, but like hearing it all for the first time. You don't have to hear it again if you don't want to, but very few pop songs are that bad if you don't subject yourself to overplaying, and this album embodies that feeling in my opinion.
Love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! I had never listened to this one before and it is really good. Similar to their newest album.
3.5-4
Really liked this a lot! Couldn’t work out where I recognised Heads Will Roll from and turns out it’s the Chucky TV show. Love him.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a tendency to make some of the most incredibly soothing yet emotionally fraught songs you can find in indie music and yet also be danceable as hell sometimes, the music and vocals will amaze you in many ways, music to break down at the rock club to.
Dull after the second half
Liked it. I don’t know if I’d go back to it again, but it wasn’t unpleasant.
Really enjoyed this. Haven’t delved too far into this band before. But it make download the album. Just some fun indie tunes. 4/5
my faves are dragon queen, shame and fortune, and little shadow. love this era of music sm
Solid
good leg bounce music
Off with your head, baby. Dance till ur dead, baby.
Forgot how good this band was, flew under the radar for me when they came up. Fucking good tunes!
Love this album. I've heard maybe one song of the YYY's over the years but this opened my ears to a whole new appreciation.
I started out not liking this album--seemed like just another run-of-the-mill pop-inspired indie rock band. After giving it a chance, I grew to appreciate the variety and song writing, especially once I got to the acoustic version of "Hysteric" which showcased the songwriting talent and raw energy that doesn't need the synth to shine.
I was familiar with a couple of the singles but hadn't listened to the album. It's quite good, actually; at least, I enjoyed listening to it enough that I gave it a second listen right away.
A pretty great third album that expands on the danceability of their incendiary debut rather than the punk elements but without entirely sacrificing them. It’s fun, especially the first few songs, and could even be their most complete album? I do love Fever to Tell though…
I have absolutely no idea how or why this album made this list, but I thought it was fun anyway.
Really enjoyable listen. Something of a time capsule album for that post-recession, pre-social media era. I dig it.
Heavenly voice and varied album. I quite enjoyed that. Note to self. Find your favourite YEAH YEAH YEAHS album and replay it some more. It might be the other one ... Also introduced to me here at 1001. Yeah found it. Aps" what a track. So, the list inst utter crap all the time. Should this band really be here twice? Choices suck.
Lively, sometimes lost itself though
Fun! Some great classics on here
Synth punk. Good energy
I really like the alternative sound of this music.
Really great album. Each song brings a different feel and energy. Could listen to this all day. Off with your head.
I'm a bit familiar with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Maps is one of my all-time favourite songs. Was a big fan when of Heads Will Roll when it first hit the radio, but this is the first time I actually listened to the whole album. Pretty enjoyable, very balanced sound, instrumentals are clean. I'm sure Karen O isn't the right sound for everyone, but I really enjoy her unique vocals. Dull Life is a standout for me, definitely surprised I hadn't heard it before.
Hatte einige richtig nice Songs, vor allem Heads Will Roll, Skeletons und Dull Life
I don’t know exactly what to call this album in terms of genre, but it was pretty damn good. Doesn’t overstay its welcome for most to all of the songs, along with the songs ranging in terms of energy and style.
3/1001. Fucking slaps.
It’s a good album. I’m happy to have finally given it a full listen before I die.
Very fun album, great songs
Yeah, I got blitzed!
I love the way this album sounds. There are so many songs I love. My only criticism is about the structure of the album, I felt that the pacing was not great and the energetic start left the last few songs, which were each beautiful on their own, feeling like a let down.
Really enjoyed this one Easy 4 Nice funk riffs at times Generally great
Peppy and fun, enjoyed the rest of the album that was new to me!
Fresh and kept me on my toes.
4/5 - It is remarkable how i have gone this long knowing "Heads will roll" but not any other song by them. Criminally under rated. This album has catchy, poppy, emotion provoking music. And most of the songs will absolutely make you want to dance.
Not heard this before, loved it.
I enjoyed this. A few tracks I'd heard before and some new. Not worried changing, but enjoyable.
I have learned that I need to listen to more Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Comments: I first heard this album around 2011 when I was exploring the indie scene during the height of Tumblr. I recall trying to be an edgy tumblr girl. Favorite tracks: Heads Will Roll, Dull Life, Runaway, Dragon Queen Rating: 4/5
Lots of enjoyable songs, not much flow though
Pretty solid alt rock/indie album with many enjoyable tracks.
It's just a solid batch of indie rock tunes. zero and heads will roll kick things off incredibly well. A lot of energy and punch. Skeletons shares great atmosphere and builds up to a great finish. Runaway i feel is the centerpiece of the album and it is a fantastic song. The keys are great, the vocals stand out as well. hysteria is a great earworm. Great album. It's a light to a strong 4 for me.
Hressandi. Ferskt og ánægjulegt að hlusta á. Ég fíla þetta, hafði alltaf bara hlustað á eitt og eitt lag með þeim í útvarpinu en gæti vel hlustað á þessa plötu oftar í framtíðinni.
Simply a good album, by a good band, in a good place. No filler. Gutsy guitar music with a glamorous eye on the dance floor.
This shit slaps. Much better than the other Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I got. I'm sure if I kept listening to it, it'd get a 5. Either way, it's getting saved for future listens.
Awesome
Even though most of the songs besides heads, Will roll were new to me I really enjoyed the album and definitely would revisit it
Really great example of the indie rock wave in the late 00s, and I think the sound as a whole really still stands up well. Heads Will Roll is an obvious favorite but pretty much everything sounds great. There's sort of a glitteriness that's prevalent on a lot of the tracks here that I like.
3.5/5
lots of cool songs I heard before, but 1st time hearing album. 4
01) Zero - 9,5 02) Heads Will Roll - 9,0 03) Soft Shock - 8,5 04) Skeletons - 9,5 05) Dull Life - 8,0 06) Shame and Fortune - 8,0 07) Runaway - 8,5 08) Dragon Queen - 8,5 09) Hysteric - 8,5 10) Little Shadow - 8,5 11) Faces - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,59 (86/100)
I like this album way better than their original album. Their first album is one note…punk. This was interesting and more soothing. I now understand their popularity.
Had more depth that i thought that Yeah Yeah Yeahs had. Thoroughly enjoyable electro indie.
Zero // Heads Will Roll // Soft Shock // Dull Life // 3.5/5
Pretty good album
Love Karen O's voice, I used to listen to Yeah Yeah Yeahs so much during the 2010s. Takes me back.
Great alt rock album. It hits all those spots you want in this genre, and just as impressive in 2023 as it was in 2009.
solid, some recognizable tunes
Great vocals and music. I enjoyed this alot more than I expected.
Pleasantly surprised. Great voice.
I remember the Yeah Yeah Yeahs being a thing, but never really paid them much attention. This is good though. One of the few albums where I liked the acoustic tracks towards the end as they reveal and more tender side to the lead singer.
Awesome
Fav Songs -Heads will roll -She’ll shocked -Hysteric
Enjoyed this album a lot, lots of great songs. Not listened to them much before so a nice surprise.
I've always really liked the song Maps from this band, but I have pretty much ignored the rest of their releases. This is pretty good, and I enjoyed listening more than I thought I would. Definitely stands out from other similar 00s era indie/alt rock bands, many of whom were influenced by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Zero is my favorite song on the album.
Feel like this is a defining album of the 2000s
Enjoyable!
Karen O's voice is beautiful. The music goes down real nice.
Way more recent than I expected. Enjoyable and fits my bias from being more modern.
Loved it!! just what I needed today! peppy and angsty and love the sound of the vocalist. Faves were Zero, Heads will Roll (always), and Little Shadow was a beautiful surprise! 4.5*
Yeah! I like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! 4/5
AJ: this is fucking excellent. Cat, listen to this. Lots of strange synth sounds, then they’re an indie rock band. Lots of build ups and peaks. I love her voice. I love the drummer. It feels so weird that I love this. They’re so weird, I love this. Imagining sunset set at a huge festival, thousands of people on good happy drugs. Big unified bounces an smilies and wows. I’m stoned. It was a good ride home.
Good album. Something different to the previous we listened to in our gwoup. Also fine after a tough drinking night. Good for regeneration the day after (''fein zum Ausnüchtern'' as we call it in our regions). 3.9
First timer for me the band! I like the raw voice from the singer. In general love the combo of electronic and rock. Makes it a little bit softer for me to hear. Personal Top3 in no order: Soft Shock Runaway Dragon Queen
3.5/5
Nice
4.3/5 - great album and good for a listen every so often. listened 3x to deluxe edition (5 bonus tracks)
Kinda the same song over and over but I like that song so it's ok with me
Road trip/chill out/game night party album!
Zero, Runaway, and Hysteric are standout tracks
Head will shake
Chilll
Liked it a lot. Classic songs on there
I love the yeah yeah yeahs and this album but the pacing is so strange and inconsistent I have trouble giving it a 5
Ganske bra
I could get lost in this voice...
Great!!
I like: Soft Shock Skeletons Dull Life Runaway Dragon Queen Hysteric
8/10
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are always a ton of fun. They get a little less noisy here, trending more towards the electronic and synth sounds popular at the time. But they never lose the energy that is their trademark. This is still unquestionably rock, but it's also super danceable. It's fun!
absolute bangers
Beautifully rendered pop-rock album: at once fun and danceable and a little dangerous while also being surprisingly emotional, especially toward the closing three tracks. A well balanced work, reflecting many elements of popular music filtered through their own special unique musical perspective. Care was obviously placed on the track ordering as it feels like a journey rather than just a collection of songs. I love Karen O’s voice, able to blend to whatever the song needs, from detached to hyped to achingly, crackedly beautiful. Bonus that my wife loves this album. Will definitely return. Only wish there was a half star option, because this is a 4.5, but just can’t justify a 5 star rating.
Great all out rock!
4+
Impassioned vocals against icy, droning disco grooves. It works on me. I don't know this band very well but found this album compelling.
Not what I was expecting, i thought these guys were simple, shouty, guitar based punk. But no, more 2009, 6 Music, electro, ballad pop. It’s good but not great, I like it but I don’t love it.
Big fan of yeah yeah yeahs, so original and a great sound. This isn’t anywhere near as good as mosquito but still some great tunes on here and an easy listen
I only knew this band by their song Heads Will Roll which has been memed to death on videos all over the internet. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had more to offer over the course of the album. The strong side is clearly the production, with songs like Skeletons and Runaway having grandiose building sections that feel as if you're listening to a movie soundtrack. Some lyrics are hard to interpret and fall to the wayside along with some tracks having painfully slow starts. More in depth rating would be 3.7. Standout Tracks: Skeletons, Dull Life, Runaway.
reminds me of highschool!
Loved this album when it came out I was at uni. Not one Iv listened to much recently though I really liked Yeah Yeah Yeahs most recent album (Cool it down), so I still listen to them frequently, but tend to stick on Fever to tell over this one. Was great listening back to this today, one I’ll need to keep playing more frequently. Great band.
The New York rock revival of the 2000s led to some incredible bands with enduring legacies. In that vein Yeah Yeah Yeahs feel kinda forgotten. This album slaps though. A beautiful synthy alt rock masterwork full of high energy songs grounded by soft emotional tunes. If you've never heard Heads Will Roll or Skeletons, give them a listen. It is not my favorite Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, but it is absolutely worth your time.
Yay yay yay!
Really enjoy the dance music aspects to this album. Think I preferred it to Fever to Tell! Essential Tracks: Zero Heads Will Roll (Playlist) Runaway
This is a great album. Not quite the consistency of Show Your Bones but still some really good songs and overall a great sound. I think for that time it came out and the dip music has had in the intervening period it stands up even better than I remember.
Think I like Fever to Tell better… but Love me some Yeah Yeah Yeah’s!
it was ok
Loved the album. Was a casual fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but this makes me want to listen more.
Heads will roll is such a fun song I like the album artwork + title, a couple songs in and it already fits really well I don't always love pop rock but I'm enjoying this album , even if the sound seems a bit stuck in the 00s at times (the impression I got from 'soft shock') I like the direction they head in with dragon queen and heads will roll, these songs excited me the most as I like the disco incorporation A lot of the songs were giving subdued and reminded me of the empty feeling I get on a Sunday unfortunately which wasn't really a nice thing Their song 'Maps' from their first album is a song that I adore because of how impactful the repetition is throughout the lyrics, and a lot of their songs in this album seem to have this essence of simplicity which works at times (like on skeletons) but at other times it feels a bit banal. Dull Life is a stand out for sure, catchy and fun to dance to whilst brushing my teeth
Love this a lot. Electrifying and sleazy in some moments yet calm and beautiful in others Favourite tracks: Zero, Heads Will Roll, Soft Shock, Skeletons, Runaway, Dragon Queen
Nostalgia glasses were on, but I can’t deny that I enjoy this
Very good. Edging towards five star territory, but I'm not loving the vocals enough for a top rating.
Seriously addictive pop music. It only slightly falls short of 5 stars.
This brings back good memories of the before times. A solid indie-synth-pop album.
3.5 stars. Alternative synth-y pop rock. Driven by the phenomenal dance anthem, "Heads Will Roll", but not a ton else to write home about but not many duds either. "Zero" is the second best track.
Was it enjoyable? Yeah. Was it well-made? Yeah. Did I like it? Yeah.
It's good!
I like this record. Again, not sure if it’s 1001 material.
Remind me of the Knife all and all pretty good, the last songs are not as memorable as the beginning
Hysterical and Skeletons are highlights
The yeah yeah yeahs is one of the dumbest names for any band ever but this record slaps so fair is fair.
Good
just as good as their other album fever to tell
nice 4*
Loved a lot of this.
Started fast went slow
A lot of surprises on this album. I was really only familiar with heads Will Roll and Maps but this album surprised me. It's almost a dream pop album in some areas, if anything "Heads Will Roll" stands out as being very unlike the rest of the album. Highly recommend
Liked this well more than I thought I would, nearly a 5
Protect Karen O at all costs.
hi yeah yeah yeahs
Awesome.
Yes Yes Yes! This is quite nice. I definitely didn't realize Heads Will Roll was the original version of a popular A-Trak song (well remix actually). Awesome song. Pretty solid indie rock - I like the vocalist. There's some Metric vibes here for sure.
Big fan. Hell yeah yeah yeahs
Pretty awesome, really enjoyed it. 4 year's out of 5
I thought I didn't like it but then Dull Life woke me up and I realized it was pretty damn good. Dull Life is the best one.
Was shocked at how much I liked this album. The mix of rock and electronic was cool, and I really enjoyed the female vocals with it all. Definitely want to explore more of this band.
I like this album. I'd listen to it again. Not sure there are enough distinct songs that would make any of them favorites, but I'm only on track 3. Runaway is my favorite track so far (#7). It would be a good cleaning album. Hysteric is good also, followed by Little Shadow.
Not a bad album better than expected. Liked the acoustic songs at the end.
A rather enjoyable album
Brave, fearless, modern. "Heads Will Roll" is a banger. Simple as that.
Dig it
Eclectic. Interesting. Really like this. Underrated band.
Today is a good day. This record was my first exposure to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and contributed greatly to my appreciation of modern music. The first half of this record is just one classic on top of another. If you don’t get pumped up listening to Heads Will Roll, I can’t help you. The slow build of Dull Life really capitalized the whole A side. The B side can drag a bit, but I’d still say none of the tracks here are skippable. It’s true, this isn’t Fever to Tell, but It’s Blitz!
Prefer other album
Right up my indie alley.
Great blend of alternative rock, pop, and electronic music with a gifted vocalist. Very much a product of a wide range of influences into an original and cohesive whole. Had heard of the band but didn’t know anything about their music. This album had me looking for more by YYY.
Aldrig hört förut. Förvånansvärt bra.
Fun rock album. Some songs don't have the greatest of lyrics, but still overall fun to listen to.
I knew I would like this, as I love all the singles I’ve heard before. And the album did not disappoint! Listen again: yes! Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Heads Will Roll
easy listening pop - still good
It was good, but there was a 2-star review here that I agree with outside of opinion, in that the album kind of fools you with the title, cover, and first few songs, since it’s a much slower album than you’re led to believe. Heads Will Roll is a banger, though, and the slower songs are still good. In conclusion, RIP egg.
I ran hot and cold on this album. The hots were easy 5s, the colds were probably a 3. Four seems fair.
This is good!
3.5/5 the first few songs are very good, the rest just ok
I like it.
a few songs i’ve definitely heard before
A solid indie album
Unique sound. Bit of space-poppunk. Of course, I knew heads will roll, but never heard the rest. Im gonna check out their other albums. Excellent basslines, groovy melodies too. Singer has a unique style, although the non-words sound a bit (a lot) like sex sounds
Through the first few tracks it was feeling like good-not-great alt dance pop. When I got to Skeletons I started to worry that I wouldn't be able to escape the feeling of this being a direct precedent to a lot of the awful indie music that would come out in the following decade, even if I liked this quite a bit more. But then, to my ears the tracks/beats started to get more textured, more interesting, and the album started to move into great territory. And it started to remind me of why a younger me *almost* enjoyed those terrible indie bands - the sonic encapsulation of youth, exuberance, moodiness, sexiness, infatuation with drunken nights and faux love, etc. etc.
Yeah yeah yeahs has been out of my radar since 2005. I thought that Fever to tell was all for them and that Karen O and company had little to offer after that awesome album. I was wrong. It’s blitz is a great piece of work with contagious riffs and potent earworms. Their dance punk evolved and took LCD Soundsystem elements to come up with something interesting. Karen O’s voice is always a great display of energy and sensuality. Thank you for this recommendation!
Prime YYYs, most banging album they have
Decent record, sounds cool, full of swagger and style. Yeah yeah yeah.
Female vocals fun nostalgia
Great 2000s indie rock
Great album. Loved the little acoustic set at the end
Excellent 4+/5
Actually enjoyed it, altough at the end it started to slow down a little. Nice variation of pop music.
The second best YYYs album, but a slightly distant 2nd. The poppiest. Starts off really strong, Zero is a total banger. Heads Will Roll is ok, they went full on for the pop market and it worked, although it makes me sad that this is their most played song as it's not even in their top 20 songs. Soft Shock and Skeletons are both gorgeous in different ways. Skeletons reminds me slightly on Karen O's solo stuff on the Where the Wild Things are soundtrack. Then it loses momentum. Dull Life to Runaway are more like the second album, not bad songs but fairly safe and mostly a let down after the debut, or after the first 4 songs of this record. Dragon Queen is just kinda pap. Hysteric is bliss on a stick and one of their best ever songs. in hindsight, the coda Little Shadow is a precursor to the sound they explored more fully on their recent comeback album, which is also decent.
This album is just a pleasant hit of my late 20s
I found this quite enjoyable. Pretty polished and engaging mix of electronic pop and alt rock, with Heads Will Roll and Dull Life standing out for me. The consistency of the tracks raise it up a notch for me.
Damn, I forgot how many memorable hooks there are on this album.
heads will roll is an all time banger and the rest of the album is pretty good too
This one is a lot of fun (they were definitely still on fire at this point).
Huge yeah yeah yeahs fan - this isn’t their best album
I’ve been sleeping on Karen o as a singer.
