Reviews (page 9 of 13)

High energy guitar & synth dance music huffing the fumes of the early 00s indie boom. It's uptempo, bouncey pop - rising tension and big explosive choruses and massive hooks with very polished production. Very fun songs that really sound great, even if there's not much too it. Music for jogging, but in skinny jeans.

3.5. Think there are some sublimely lovely moments in this but I think I connect more with the YYY’s sweatier albums.

Decent. It's in the category of "records I wouldn't shut off but won't go out of my way to listen to."

Hysteric is quite good. Little Shadow, too. Rest of it, a little too dance-y.

Started off strong! Was a good album, not something I listen to a lot, but that whole NY garage revival scene is a fun niche genre.

I liked it. Didn't knock my socks off, but I liked it. One thing I dislike about this project is the 5 star rating system. This one would probably be better than my typical "3", but not really a "4", especially after I just gave James Brown a 4. James Brown this is not. So, in my mind, this one's about a 3 1/2.

First thing I am going to say is, its better than a lot of the post-2000 music that has made this list. Its not moody it definitely has some pop. Its definitely not punk, more indie rock to me. Overall good, nothing groundbreaking. I feel there is too much going in the background production, for just two dudes carrying all the Instrumental weight. I think they should put a bass in Karen O's hands and make her do a little more work.

I really enjoy this kind of 2000s music. Heard some of these songs before over the year. Really enjoyed this album and the use of instrumentals. Essential Indie music.

It was ok. Did not love

OK, sans plus.

Some songs I liked, but I kinda struggled unfortunately, wasn't in a sad indie girl mood

Cool, with one very nice song that I knew already (Heads will roll), but just OK to me.

Grew up listening to 70s and 80s rock. This music has less talent. The songs are too long for the type of music. I do like her voice, very versatile

3/5. ... great sound

Incredible start. Zero is a mix of the best of early 2000's rock. Heada will roll is the main single from this and it is very fun a catchy, but gets kinda samey at the middle. That's true for most songs in here, they follow the same pattern for most of the time. Runaway seems to stand out, being mostly piano-based. Hysteric is a pretty sweet song, love the voice in this one. The acoustic versions are nice, but the album as a whole can't scape that feeling of sameyness.

This band and The Strokes are in the same bucket for me. Those 2000-2010 rock bands which made perfectly good music but just didn't/don't grab my attention for whatever reason. I liked the acoustic tracks at the end much more than the rest of the album. 2.75 stars.

Quite enjoyable, but not something I would listen to normally. 3/5

Apart from the one single I constantly hear in the radio and am completely sick of, this was a decent album. I can safely say I’m a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

fun 2000-2010 nostalgic feelz ★★★½

Bra blandning av lite popigt och rock. Även lite shoegazeigt ibland. Trevligt men inte mitt favoritalbum i deras kollektion

Catchy, energetic, poppy rock music. It's a fun album, and the last two tracks, Hysteric, and Little Shadow, show some range to perform songs that are quieter but still engaging.

Yeah yeah yeah this is just fine fine fine.

It was a well done album, but the genre just didn't really speak to me personally

OK but not great. Some of the tracks quite interesting but nothing really memorable

Surprisingly good, liked the acoustic tracks at the end. 3 stars.

I enjoyed this album - "Heads Will Roll" is a fun one. Played it through twice and while there was nothing I can say I really disliked, I also can't say anything stuck out to me as being amazing.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Fiftieth album and definitely not a bad one at that. Heads Will Roll and Runaway were a couple of my favourites! I genuinely don’t think I could give a pop album a bad score. High 3.

I think I prefer a few of the parts over the sum and they are enjoyable enough for me to overlook getting bored about midway through the record.

I wasn't a big fan of Fever to Tell. This record is a lot better, though I don't plan to listen again.

Лучшая песня - Dull Life.

When this came out I hated it because it was electronic and I 1) wanted more of their garage rock sound and 2) didn't respect artists that didn't play real instruments. Luckily, I've grown up and I really enjoyed this album. So shout out to growing as a person and getting over your weird, gatekeep-y attitudes towards what "real" music should be.

Not my thing. Didn’t listen to it all

Karen O could sing the phone books and it would sound amazing. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs rule. 3.5 stars

Good album. One I own and well worth another listen.

Sync sucked the novelty out of a lot of these tracks, but still putting it between 3 and 4

Really dull late 2000s sound. This electro disco indie or whatever was a horrible time for music. Way too polished compared to their first album

Decent mix. Preferred the acoustic stuff.

Fun indie rock album, lots of synth and heavy beats. Cool fusion of genres.

If you know you know

Indie synth rock

I want to rate this album higher but it's just really okay

Never heard it in full! Actually never heard of any albums of them. The big hit was obvious, although I do prefer the remix. The thick synths were great but the slow songs a bit dull. Most of the ones i didn't recognise were rather boring.

There is one song I’ve heard by this band and I can’t remember the name of it. I love this opening track. It’s so good. I love the sounds and the energy. Ok, so about halfway through a en it’s good, but not grabbing me. Not sure I would think to seek this out again.

Kompetent elekrorock, men show your bones är min skiva med yeah, yeah, yeahs

Surprised to find out that the "Off with your head" song is by these guys. I found the album itself to be a little lacklustre but Heads Will Roll is a banger.

It's hard to rate this one. It has a certain beat, it's experimental and the band has an identity. Somehow it felt a bit off, not gonna lie. In some songs at the end of the first half you just zone out. And I have to say: The acoustic versions are a lot better. All in all, I think it's an ok album, but nothing that needs to be on this list.

Fantastic upbeat call to the dance floor

Interesting.

This album is ok, and Karen O is a great front lady. I feel this album gets almost all its work in the first 15 mins, and I gound myself not caring for or remembering back half. But Zero, Heads Will Roll, and Soft Shock are all great (and indie radio darlings), and that's enough to keep the album passable. Soft Shock is my favorite, even if Heads Will Roll is probably better.

I really like “Zero” & “Heads Will Roll”, but the rest was while musically interesting, lyrically boring. Too much repetitive for me. I didn’t love the album, but I’d buy the two singles.

3 bangers on the track then pidder ditters into borderline boring emo gobbledeegoops

I enjoyed this. It's got an unusual sound for 2009 Indie Rock. Massive, really. It builds up as the album progresses. It's disco-rock at times reminiscent of Blondie. That's good.

This didn't do much for me. It's not a bad album, or bad music, but it's not great either. Very little that stood out or was worth remembering.

Better as an album than as individual songs. Decent but not great.

Pleasant rock album, not sure if it's a 3 or a 4 or a 5. I kind of think of it as a feminine equivalent of Royal Blood.

--Zero...good opener. I have a sneaking suspicion this song is about the female orgasm --Heads Will Roll...I like the production but it lacks a decent hook --Soft Shock...not a total banger, but something that could grow on me with time --Skeletons...I feel like this was a very therapeutic song for Karen O. Unfortunately, it doesn't translate into good pop --Dull Life...the guitars are back! This song kicks and takes some fun turns --Shame and Fortune...grimy. I like it --Runaway...interesting diversion but I think they should've kept it more minimalist. Just 2 minutes, Karen O, and a piano would have been great --Dragon Queen...great track. Love disco shit --Hysteric...nice ballad. like it a lot --Little Shadow...more of a vibe than a song

Not bad, just kinda bored

Fun album, dance till your dead is a classic meme song.

a fun album. i love karen O's voice.

Danceable rock with female singer

Nothing as catchy or groundbreaking as MAPS on here. But decent enough alt-pop I guess. 3/5 #109

- Something about the album cover disturbs me. Perhaps because it makes me imagine what having raw, runny eggs all over my hands would feel like - Zero is a fun and upbeat track that sets the tone for the album - Heads Will Roll is similar - When Soft Shock started I was confused why it had a loud, high pitched tone playing, turns out the fire alarms were going off in the house. I do like this song, and It's definitely better without the screeching. - Skeleton is a calmer song which is nice on my ears. Though I find the lyrics far too repetitive - Unfortunately after this point I realised I wasn't able to concentrate on my work, so I switched to some calmer music Overall, I enjoyed it. I love the vibe of the band, and I think the more upbeat songs are an absolute vibe and are perfectly balanced by the calmer ones. Howe, pop is not really my thing, so, overall, I'm not absolutely thrilled by this album, though I found it pleasant enough. I will say though, a lot of the songs kind of sound the same...

Ryan if you’re stalking me I think you’d like this one

Well made pop album with a heavy reliance on synths. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Does it need to be on this list? Not really.

It was an ok listen, I mostly got on with other things with it in the background. Didn't grab me, but I didn't dislike it.

I liked the change of pace. This is a good album, it just gets too full at times and repeats the same climax a few times. The lows are pretty bland and there just wasn't enough there to earn 4 stars, but it was close. - Modern rock! Doesn't suck from the start. Very indie - First song is fun, has life. Got a bit dumb at the end - 2nd song: Hey, I've heard this one! v popular, decent

This one felt like more a product of its time, I think. A blast of 00's vibes to send out that decade, I suppose. For a bit of horizontal commentary, it's starting to sound like many of these albums follow similar emotional (Musical? Narrative?) arcs, starting upwards and finishing downwards. Casual observation: Note the similar vibes in the first (Zero) and the last (Faces?) song.

I’m ambivalent with this one.

Does heads will roll pick this up to a 4? I think maybe not.

Should’ve been called the Meh Meh Meh’s. Zero (7/10) Heads Will Roll (8/10) Soft Shock (7/10) Skeletons (6/10) Dull Life (8/10) Shame and Fortune (6/10) Runaway (5/10) Dragon Queen (7/10) Hysteric (6/10) Little Shadow (6/10) Faces (7/10) 6.6/10

Sympa sans plus. Un peu lisse

Satisfying indie pop rock

In 2009, Yeah Yeah Yeahs – along with the rest of that scene of NY “indie sleaze” bands – no longer owned cool. They were an established, respected group; high enough up festival bills to be legible on the backs of merch from 30 yards out. “Heads will roll” hit the moment perfectly; a cantankerous jam that demanded to be danced to, remixed, danced to, remixed and repeat. It did a fine job of responding, with authenticity and in artistic good faith, to the general direction indie was going in – more prominent synthesisers, less dramatic in-song dynamics. A shift across indie music that, looking back, was the start of a nudging away from attitude and toward vibe – HEALTH, The xx, Washed Out (a gentle metamorphosis that would reach its apotheosis in 2012 with Beach House’s “Bloom”). It’s been 15 years since all that; so I’m pleasantly surprised that “Heads will roll” sounds just as exciting today as it did when it was first released. And “Zero”, album opener, sounds even better. All fantastic signs that I’m in for a long overdue sitting-down-with “It’s Blitz!” in full (for better or worse, I was listening to Animal Collective on repeat in 2009). Well, not so much, in the end. It’s Good! … but aside from the hits and a couple of others (“Dragon Queen”, especially) this is a pedestrian group of songs; fun enough but never quite getting to a height you suspect that, with just a little extra risk, it could reach. If “Heads will roll” was among the early triumphs of the attitude–vibe continuum, then “It’s Blitz!” might, in its own small way, have been among its first victims. A good album that’s somewhere between a scream and a yawn. Lights up, indie, the party’s over.

Had good variety. Not amazing but good

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are fine but didn’t listen lol

i liked this more than the The Strokes album. less repetitive, but still only a song or two that i really liked.

Trying too hard to be orgasmic.

increased by heads will roll tbh

Opening four tracks are so good. Really strong opening. Next two rolling in at around a 6.5/10 for me. Not bad, and definitely in keeping with the rh overall aesthetic, but lack the emotional heft and urgency of the first four. The next three - though maybe not quite as impactful as the first four - are a really return to form with groovy, danceable rhythms and typically gorgeous melodies from Karen O. The last song, Little Shadow, is absolutely wonderful and a fittingly evocative and ethereal way to end a great journey. The intimate acoustic epilogue provides a beautiful capstone. Lovely album with only one or two minor dips.

6/10 I listened to this twice, first time I enjoyed it more than the second, but I was concentrating less. It kind of washed over me in a kind of (like Jimbo said) ‘enjoying at a festival’ way. Second listen, I found it to just be a bit too ‘Indie Band with synths writing festival anthems’ for my taste. It also often relied on the same, or very similar basic chord structure or rhythm through both verses and choruses that made it a bit uninteresting in places. I think I wanted to like it more than I did actually like it. What it really screamed out to me is that they found or programmed some interesting arpeggiated synth patches, but didn’t know how to transition to and from from those patches between different sections of a lot of the songs, so a lot of them just kind of relentlessly persisted throughout. A bit like yesterday, liked it, didn’t love it. Zero - Decent kick off. Not massively keen on the driving synth that dominates the mix. Heads will roll - Liked this more than the first. Soft Shock - Decent song, but doesn’t do anything that interesting. Skeletons - Another, more low-key anthem. Dull Life - Really like this one. There’s a bit more to it, more dynamic and stylistic range, Shame and Fortune - Like this one a lot too. Not as interesting as the last one, but it’s got a great groove. Runaway - Good song, a bit samey throughout. Dragon Queen - Loved the groove in this one. Doesn’t really go anywhere with it though. Hysteric - A bit dull. Little Shadow - Nice, also a bit repetitive. Faces - Like it, didn’t love it. Similar to the rest of the album, it was just a bit repetitive.

Punkish pop, I don’t hate it.

I didn't mind this and found it more listenable than Radiohead!

Couple of hits good album

I’m too lazy to go back & check but I think this is the 2nd Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. Might be one too many. Might be enough.

Not my cuppa - only heard half tbh

I enjoyed this. 3 stars

Enjoyed the album.

, Skeletons, Dragon Queen

Fav: Heads Will Roll Least Fav: Little Shadow Always nice to recognise a song you had no idea was on the album, especially if it’s a banger like Heads Will Roll is

The album cover is actually hard af. The music is ok, it's actually one of the better records from the 2000s that I got on this list.

This was a fun album to listen to. As soon as I heard Heads Will Roll (a track I remembered from having watched Glee a while ago) I was pretty excited to hear what else It's Blitz had to offer. I ran into some pretty great tracks with Skeletons being my favorite, as it was something different from the many catchy dance tracks on this album. While those tracks were good, they can get a bit old. Fortunately, I feel that this album was set up well to give the listener "breaks", so to speak, to enjoy some pretty, more soft tracks.

Decent, never listened before bar Off With Their Heads

As most of my Yeah Yeah Yeahs experiences have been with Fever To Tell, this one took me a minute to adjust to. This is effectively an electro-pop album with sort of a punk-y tone, and I think it more or less works. That being said, I can't fully divorce It's Blitz! from what I was wanting from a Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, so part of me certainly wishes this had some more teeth. Despite this, what is here is catchy, groovy and focused, and I did enjoy my time with it.

Fairly good album, even though not my usual style.

They could have called this It’s Fine! and that would have also worked. I own the most recent YYYs album on vinyl and remember liking this and Fever to Tell, with ambivalence towards Mosquito — revisiting It’s Blitz!, I think it’s okay! It’s listenable but not something I’ll ache to revisit.

Faves: Heads will roll, dull life, runaway. Would I revisit this: no.

It was fine but a lot of it sounded the same and was pretty high energy/intense

For some reason, before I had heard anything, I thought this group was older, early 90's or something. I don't know why. Anyway, it's got more punk than I expected. It's not bad. I'd be curious for more, but I'm not running out to buy this.

So this is where "Heads Will Roll" comes from.

I really didn’t like fever to tell, but i found this to be pretty okay overall. Started out super strong

It's the Dance 'til You're Dead group

A-Trak does Heads Will Roll better tbh. by a lot. this is a worthwhile album though. very emblematic of its era in a way that makes it a good distillation of the late 2000s indie scene; where rock music turned electronic and the internet really sunk its claws into the culture. a more engaging and interesting album than Fever To Tell, i can tell you that much, even if it does lose me as it winds down deserves to be one of the 1001? i would say yeah (yeah yeahs)

Very strong singles, the rest of the album is quite good. 3.5

It's hard to stand the mix and how loud it is. Probably wrong day for such an album. Lot's of energy though. Wish I had less of my own rage to appreciate it, but I don't

Cool record, Karen O’s vocals are spectacular and the music behind it is shifting and interesting

I have heard of this band but never heard it. Had no idea they even had a female singer. I guess it's OK but it seemed like all the songs were trying to be big grandiose anthems without actually accomplishing that.

A good album, very much a product of its time. A bit rocky to start - the songs don't necessarily go well for the first five, but balances out very nicely at the end. The acoustic versions round out the album nicely.

Just here to say how much I appreciate alex-v-cook’s reviews. "Perfect disposable NYC lifestyle rock"! What a choice phrase! So many terrific concise descriptions that Alex delivers. A+ reviewer (C+ album).

I've never played this record, even though I've heard its hit a billion times—and even like it. It's fun stuff! A cool 3.5 that I'm arbitrarily choosing to round down.

This was fine, and Heads will Roll is a great single, but I don't see it as Important or Canon.

Was fine. Not bad but I was bored

The opening track is one of my favorite songs by any artist from the 2000s. THAT BEING SAID... Back when the Strokes-era NYC scene was exploding, these guys were critical darlings and I didn't really get it. I thought they were fine, but didn't see what all the fuss was about. I figured there must be something about seeing them live. I had the opportunity to do that at one of the Bonnaroos I went to and... I guess I sort of got it? Karen O definitely had stage presence. And she is certainly attractive but I never understood the whole "sex goddess" image the music press seemed to bestow on her. Oh well, I like these guys OK and this was pretty a good album. I just never understood what the big deal was. I guess like a lot of the albums in this project, you had to be there. ("There" being NYC at that particular time, not just being alive in 2003-2009.) P.S. - I listened to the "Deluxe Edition" on Apple Music and it included 4 extra acoustic version tracks and I liked those better than what ended up on the album. Good songs that I liked more without all the synthesizer crap.

Sounds a lot more modern than I expected, guess things go in cycles. Starts strong and feels fun and poppy but then peters out a little

Solid, dance pop with personality. Will revisit.

2nd half besides the last song is good. The rest is whatever.

Fun indie-pop from the late naughties. Better than most of the other stuff that was coming out around that time, but not exciting musically.

pop classic (heads will roll) not really my kind of misic but their acoustics are nice

Electronic sounds in music is really, really not my jam. Heads Will Roll is really damn good tho.

Coming into this I only knew Heads Will Roll, which is a pretty fun song! I honestly thought this would be a mediocre pop album, and that would have been fine. Instead I was pleasantly surprised after the slow (to me) start to hear a lot of different musical styles influencing this album. During the first song I was thinking this girl would be good in a riotgrrl band, then I was super excited to hear the kind of grungy Dull Life! I also really dig Dragon Queen. I can hear the talent here for sure. That said, mostly kind of okay songs.

Pretty good vocals/melodies

Dance till ur dead bro i remember that song. It was good. Just good I think

Heads will roll is awesome, others just ok, not bad Not going to listen again

Good listen no songs stood out, probably will not save tho. 6/10

This album was goated. It gives us classics, awesome party vibes and more. I really like the acoustic songs. 3/5

Dreamy and strong. Unique and edgy. Some cool vocals and instrumentals.

7. Prima.

fun punk album that's pretty different than what I normally listen to. - soft rock - skeletons - runaway - hysteric - little shadow

The YYYs refine their sound and get a little more poppy on "It's Blitz" compared to previous releases. In my review of their debut I said I think they get better with time but I have to say I liked "Fever to Tell" more than this one. The hits "Zero" and "Heads Will Roll" def put the band more in the public eye. Middle of the album lulled and takes it down but picks back up at the end with my top track "Dragon Queen." I'll give this one a 2.83.

watevar

Heard it before. I have an interesting relationship with this album because while it's ok I never think about it. But at the same time for some reason I can't explain Heads Will Roll is one of my favourite songs ever. For that reason alone I will give the album a good score 3/5

Is mostly fine but nothing that exciting about this, I doubt this will stand the test of time as being particularly notable 3*

This wasn't my favorite but overall it was a pleasant listen. Heads Will Roll was the stand out for me.

Nice album all in all.

Oke, onverwachts. 3.4

Yeah, okay, sort ofs

Recognized some songs. Not my favorite, but not bad.

Listened to it. Knew a familiar track and it was fine

Some good songs. Uneven as an album

Not sure I understand what this album wants to be.

I didn’t really get along with this album. Not my cup of chai TBH. Some interesting songs in there but I found myself drifting away from them too often. Not great, not awful, not one I’d revisit.

Cool Cover. The music is a bit uneven, at times wild. Maybe this needs a few spins to get into it. Not a big fan of producer Nick Launay's sound design in general, but this one's okay.

Liked the energy and vocals.

Chill vibe, pop me kvinnlig sångar, solid 7/10 would listen på roadtrip

Fun rave pop album.

First few songs/singles start fairly strong, decent 2000's alt-rock, back 2/3rds of album blend together. Solid '3', nothing bad or inspiring.

Coolable.

Meh, nu pe gustul meu prea mult

I have heard the first two songs a bunch of times before but didn't know any of the others. Not bad. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have always been one of those bands that I kind of like and enjoy their singles but have never liked enough to listen to an entire album regularly. Listening to this one didn't move them out of that designation, but there are some pretty good songs on here and I’m glad to have heard it.

Fun album

1. Zero i love the vibe and the melody but it didn't stuck in my head 2. Heads will roll - i LOVED the bridge but same with zero interesting but not enough 3. Soft shock - i actually LOVE this one i can relate to the lyrics, i love the melody and how it rises up at the end i love the vibe, i saved this one!! 4. Skeletons - i loved the instrument part between the verses and at the end but the song doesn't have ups and down that's why it didn't catch my ear but it is a good one overall, feels like i can love it more if i kept listening to it but i don't think i will. 5. Dull life - i really thought this gonna be my fav song from the 1st moment but the way the instrument breaks kinda ruined it 4 me i mean it is good but it is not how i want it to be 6. Shame & fortune - by far it is my fav song of the album, love the melody and how the drums and the bass goes louder i also love the lyrics and how simple the song is. Definitely a vibe 7. Runaway - absolutely love the melody and it gives a chill vibe in the middle of the album seems like a relief, my problem is the lyrics it is good but it not deep enough for the melody and the vibe also i feel like the song need a lift up, basically a solid song but not good enough 8. Dragon queen - i don't know how to feel about, i like but something sound off and the melody a little annoying even though i love it. It gives me mixed feelings but i am saving it 9. Hysteric - this one DEFINITELY TAKES THE CROWN 👑 the best one in the album till now. the melody, the lyrics, the vibe everything is perfect 10. Little shadow - this one is GREAT comes after hysteric to me and the instrumental break is everything 11. Faces - back to the party life i see, I LOVE IT the lyrics and the melody are on point and i enjoy it a lot, one of my favorites in the albums tbh. Sooooo out of 11 songs i enjoyed 6 which is really good at the first listening since i am the type of person how need to listen to a song at least 2 times before i like it. It is a really good album. It gives partying with tears in my eyes type and i am here for it. Overall i give it 6.7/10

'Fever To Tell' has always been one of my favorite post-punk-revival albums of the 2000s, but that album's younger electronica-tinged brother 'It's Blitz', I've never really connected with. Like their debut, Karen O's quirky and charming delivery is the ultimate draw here, but the production I find doesn't suit her as well. 'Heads Will Roll' is the standout here - a song I enjoy even after that one overplayed remix. For the record, this original version is leagues better. 'Soft Shock' was an early highlight as well. It sort of reminds me of why I loved 'Maps' so much with its melancholic synthpop instrumental. 'Dull Life' was catchy, and 'Skeletons' was also a decent slow-ballad, but it's really the second half of this record that loses me. I think if I squint my eyes, I can sort of morph the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to an early 2010. pop-group, and maybe this record would make more sense to me then. But I just can't do that, no matter how hard I try - this album will always feel off to me - like a band who strayed way too far from their original sound. Nothing wrong with that, of course; it just doesn't work for me in this particular case. I feel similar about some of Modest Mouse's 2000s work, though admittedly, I enjoy those albums a heck of a lot more.

Catchy synth pop/rock. Fun listen but not one for the long term list.

Totally fine 2000s rock/pop.

Scott Pilgrim-core for some reason. This was a good listen. Obviously, Heads Will Roll is gonna be around forever, but Zero and Hysterical were also highlights. Where's the 3.5 button

its just kinda tame i guess

Thus album is very 2009

It's....fine. It's better than the other Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I had on here the other week (Fever To Tell). There's not much here that particularly grips me, but the music sounds good. Heads Will Roll is great (but the remix is better). 5.5/10 (2.75/5)

I love that there are albums you listen to that just sound like the time they were released. This album is good, but lags a little here and there. There are definitely some great bops that I love though.

3/10, 30%

This album disappointed me. I've liked the song Hysteric for a long time and was happy to see the album show up on the list, but I was bored by most of it. A couple of memorable songs. The rest is pleasant enough background noise.

A group I know very little about having only really heard two or three of their songs before. Not sure what to expect from this. If the album cover is evocative of their sound then I'm most likely in for a ride. Love the energy and motion of the egg shattering. Zero Immediately throwing me off the deep end with the loud electronics. The slight echo effect on the vocals adds some spaciousness to the mix. The singer has some interesting tricks up her sleeve. The chorus grew one me, especially when following the heavy electronic bridge. The ending meanders a bit, overstays its welcome a bit. Decent enough. 3.5/5 Heads Will Roll This song has been remixed so many times, I forgot how the original sounded. The rock-adjacent production on the chorus is unexpected. Has a good energy to it. The synth line in the background is great. I think the vocals work well as a contrast to the heavy electronic instrumental. Sounds like a precursor to a lot of the dance music that would come out the following decade. Decent. 3.5/5 Soft Shock I love the high pitched electronic line in the background. The production does a lot with what on the surface is a fairly simple song. At some points it does take up slightly too much space, where the vocals sort of get overshadowed by it. I think the chrous is cute and simple. The instrumental at the end really ties the song nicely together. Enjoyable. 4/5 Skeletons Spacious and cloudy instrumentation. Love the repetitiveness. The first verse does well to set up the following synth passage. The singer's vocals are really solid and work excellently for this type of instrumentation. Love the departure from the heavy electronics snd distorted guitars of the previous tracks. The ending of the track is beautiful and loud and it sparks some powerful images in the listener's imagination. Works really well, great vibes. 5/5 Dull Life I feel like I've heard this guitar many times before. Don't really like the tone for this track in particular. Really loud and messy switchup. The chorus is made to sound a lot bigger than it is. I think the vocals veer close to annoying at certain points. I'm not really a fan of the chorus, it sounds very of the time. The singer brings great energy to the track, and while her performance especially on the chorus does things I don't necessarily find appealing, it really is the only real highlight for me on the song. She salvages a few points by being unique and by taking things in other directions than maybe expected. Her attitude on this track is also really fun to listen to. Average. 2.5/5 Shame and Fortune The electronic bass is not something I enjoy here, mixed too loudly. I enjoy the punky writing on the verse. Not a fan of the guitar sound again. A bit of a weak track, doesn't really do much for me. I don't think the energy really goes anywhere, and it ends up sounding a bit muddled. Weak. 2/5 Runaway Sharp piano notes. Oddly mixed vocals. I like when the instrumental dips its toes into a noisier darker sound. Feels dramatic. Does veer slightly into movie trailer music territory by the end. There's definitely a largeness to the track, and I think the end result works fine for what it's trying to be, though I think there might've been a more interesting direction to take the track. Fine. 3/5 Dragon Queen Bouncy and full of life. I really don't like the bass sound. Oddly phrased lyrics on the chorus, I do like the vocal melody though. Doesn't seem to go anywhere. The synth line in the background that stays throughout the track sort of overstays its welcome by the end. Can't say I cared much for it. Weak. 2/5 Hysteric Sweet and romantic. I think the lyrics are kinda pretty. Great chorus. I think the instrumental compliments the vocals well. Not sure about how the title is implemented. The ending instrumental builds well upon the track. Good. 4/5 Little Shadow Slight lullaby vibe. It would've worked better for me with less overbearing production. Hate the stadium drums. Overproduced. Feels like a clash of ideas that doesn't really add up to anything special. Going in the dramatic direction really ruined the song for me. Did not like. 2/5 Faces A late 2000s indie rock song sounding late 2000s indie rock song. For once I like the guitar on this album. I think the structure of the song is pretty fun. Feels youthful and energetic. Doesn't really have one particular part that sticks out, rather lots of small pieces that add up to a pretty decent and fun track. Don't understand it as an album closer though. Decent. 3.5/5 A really mixed experience. The great stuff on this album has a lot going for it. Great energy, good songwriting with a few hints of magic here and there. They perform their ideas to their fullest, and seem to commit to exploring different styles. The vocals being a real highlight, bringing a unique and punchy energy, while remaining soft and familiar. Clearly the band not interested in being pidgeonholed into a particular genre or style, and seem to stand well on their own. However I think a lot of the latter part of the album has some stylistic choices I don't personally agree with. It results in a sort of messy, inconsistent listen often with tracks being both great and terrible at the same time, with some tracks that feel like wasted potential. I also think the track listing is a bit incoherent at times, where I wonder why certain tracks are where they are. I do concede that many of my gripes with the album is a matter of personal preference and that someone else could find the creative choices I dislike fantastic. I personally will be returning to a few tracks from this, but the full album probably won't be in my regular rotation. A bumpy road, but a decent listen. Fave track. Skeletons Least fave track. Little Shadow

Starts off strong but very quickly loses most of the energy with a few exceptions like "Dull Life", "Shame And Fortune" and "Faces" at the very end. Nothing too mind-blowing, there are tracks I'd add to a playlist or two (like the ones I mentioned above and of course "Heads Will Roll") but this isn't an album I'd ever fully listen front to back again.

Interesting, but without wow-effect. It's a typical indie album.

Sort of ghosty pop music. I have heard some of the hits before but never the whole album. Not bad, probably good to put on at a get together because it's not too overbearing.

Maybe a 3.5. I enjoyed the album and a couple of the songs are really catchy like "Heads will roll"

zero- 5 or 6 heads will roll- 5 soft shock- 5 skeletons- 5 dull life- 5 shame and fortune- 5 runaway- 4 dragon queen- 5 hysteric- 4 or 5 little shadow- 5

Nearly great, but not quite

Good album, not amazing. Good sound and production, some of the songs are amazing, "Heads Will Roll" is an all time classic, but it's not a must-listen album.

1st half of the album pulls you in but eventually falls flat on the second half, heads will roll will forever remain a hit. 6/10.

I was stoked for this album originally cause I got “the yeah yeah yeahs” confused with “the gimmie gimmie gimmies” (which you should look into if you like female singer rock bands). But despite the mild confusion, I loved the first 3 songs. It kinda fell off after that. But it’s still a solid modern rock album. The singers voice is great, really liked what she brought to the songs and I also liked the instrumentals. Really my only complaint is the album as a whole is kinda forgettable. Love the album artwork as well but ultimately this is a solid 3.

This is a good album! I like it! 3/5

really good

When it comes to the first half of the record - Yeah Yeah Yeahs give us an impression of an indie band which is not the first, and certainly not the last ona which tried to hop onto the 2000s trend of mixing rock music with electronic. Bland melodies, edgy lyrics and irritating vocals. Pure shit. However - the second half is surprisingly very good and a complete opposite. If it weren't for the first half, this one would have been a straight five.

Ive always enjoyed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and have felt they were an underrated band from the 2000's. This album in particular was solidly good- I like that they were experimenting with sound outside of their normal rock sound. I thought it was effective in some places but not in others. The hits are definitely hits but some of the deep tracks started to sound a little same-y. Overall- 3.5/5

Easily her best work

1. Zero - A fun and upbeat way to open the album. 2. Heads Will Roll - I've heard the A-Trak remix of this songs many times and I think I like the remixed version better. 3. Soft Shock - As the name suggests, it does go for a slower, a bit softer vibe despite the distortion still being present. I really like how the it progresses. Enjoyable. 4. Skeletons - Starts off with only synths and vocals. Lyrically minimalistic, obviously focusing more on atmosphere. The progression is even more noticeable with this one with a slower pace and buildup. I feel like I'm on a journey. Really cool track. 5. Dull Life - Starts calmly but quickly picks up into a fun groove. I was afraid is was going to be another slow burner but it actually made move. Definitely leaning more on the rock side with the dominant guitars. Fun. 6. Shame And Fortune - They sure love to build things up with that opening riff. Fuzzy guitars and groovy drumming. The instruments really shine on this one, especially the drums. 7. Runaway - Nice colorful synths opening the track, then the more moody guitars takes their place. The drums kick in as the colorful synths make their comeback and then everything comes clashing in a beautiful chaos. Once. The emphasis on musical structure rather than lyrics is preset here aw well and I love it. Very cool. 8. Dragon Queen - This one starts groovy for a change. Everything is son funky here. Another song you can dance to. 9. Hysteric - Starts off warm and chill. I love how each instrument does it's own thing and shines through. Then those happy synths appear out of nowhere and what is it? horns? They always know how to progress the song further and keep it interesting. 10. Little Shadow - Is it the final track already? This album flew by me so fast. A quiet and moody start lead by thunderous drums. More layers are added while the calm and moody vibe remains. Maybe not the most memorable but nice little track. Conclusion: I listened to the album only once so far and I quite enjoyed it. It didn't overstay it's welcome and was consistent all throughout while remaining engaging. I can see myself listening to it at least one more time and maybe playing it again if I'm in the mood. Maybe after the next listen I would explore their discography further.

Zero, Skeletons, Soft Shock, Dull Life are great! I might like this album better than their Fever to Tell The acoustic versions on this release on Spotify are also a nice treat

Liked some tracks not others. Vocally sound and good production. Average

legendary indie electro rock

Not bad. Some solid indie guitar/synth bangers. It doesn't all bang though.

Does anybody know if this album was released in 2009?

listened to again some interesting tones and textures but such boring songwriting

The production is absolutely top tier, and the vocals of Karen O are soooo impressive to listen to. I was VERY interested by this album's first 3 tracks that I got left with musical blue balls. The first 3 tracks are sooo sooo good. And while the rest of the album is fine, this album peaks VERY early. This album feels like 80s mixed with 00s. The beats were so much fun but it really left me wanting something more. The acoustic tracks were fun, but felt out of place. Liked Songs: "Zero" , "Heads Will Roll" , "Soft Shock" , "Dull Life" , "Hysteric"

liked songs: Zero, Shame And Fortune When Heads Will Roll started, I went "oh, I know this song". It was fine, honestly. Nothing all that groundbreaking. 2.5

Ok. The heads will roll is a banger. Their sparse sound adapts well to the dance stuff.

Recognized and liked more songs than I expected!

Not bad, not good.

it’s fun!!!!!! definitely doesn’t need to be on this list tho I’m sorry

liked the acoustic stuff and of course heads will roll.

This is a good album. Some of the songs are actually really nice, like "Skeletons." But it has too much of that 2010 indie sound. Big super compressed and distorted drums; lots of toms and a fat fuzzy kick. Has too much of that ballsy 'rawk' guitar ala Cage The Elephant, etc. Too much of that canned grandiosity. Like... a Target ad or something. Again, I don't hate this. I don't even dislike it. I was 19 when this came out so I went to college with this sound. I can totally listen to it and have it on and understand who this was for. It's definitely better than some of the other sound-alike indie of the time, but I still don't think I would listen to it again. Also, I think I have to change my rating criteria. 1 is I hated it, 2 is boring/meh/fine/whatever, 3 is I liked it but still wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, 4 is great I really liked it, and then 5 is mind-blowing changed-my-life material.

The first few songs have a very different energy than the rest of the album. Makes me think of the "life cycle" of a party girl......upbeat and frenetic at the outset, but melancholy starting to creep in over time. Not bad at all, although not something I would have listened to normally.

Pretty good!

Definitely a different album, fun to hear. Feels a bit like a modern Blondie album for some reason. I also noticed that I have saved song from Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Spotify, but sadly it's not from this album. Personally, the experience of this album was a bit up and down, and I'm a hard time deciding how I feel about it. On one hand, it had some songs that were decent, like 'Soft Shock', 'Dragon Queen', and 'Hysteric', but nothing that really wow:ed me. I also appreciate the fact that it stands out among much else on this list. On the other hand, I just don't think this is for me. The album's by far most popular song, 'Heads Will Roll', didn't do anything for me whatsoever. I generally find that the music gets a bit too messy, and I think it's mostly due to the singer. She really is a blessing and a curse; it's what makes the band unique, but it also gets a bit too much at times. Think I'm going to settle on a 3 after all. It's not anything I want to put on again, really.

The iTunes summary says that the drummer has never had this much fun playing on an album, but drum machine programming doesn't strike me as fun, per se. I think the second half is more interesting than the first since it's more human performance and less dance loops. This is a confusing album. The singer has clear star power, and the rest of the bans is tremendously talented, but this feels like an insulated performance. Rock, once removed.

More solid than I expected

Pretty decent glam grunge, worth a listen

Pretty medium

Great band

It's a proper album. It's curated with a track list that builds tension, some surprising moments like soft shock. Overall it's better than the singles but I probably won't come back to it much. It feels like an album that wants to be played right through and I'm not sure I like it enough to listen to it that way.

I can listen to this. 1001 is a lot of records. I can believe that this makes the cut.

"It's Blitz !" me laisse sur ma faim.

3.6/5 it was a bit of a mental struggle to start listening to this album as i wasn’t getting j to it. but eventually got through that wall and honestly, it’s a good album. it has a few really amazing songs but then kind of drops off in places for me. i do love the singer’s voice. fave songs being; -skeletons -dull life -shame and fortune least fave song; -heads will roll

Indierock, lidt dance, heads Will roll er jo egentlig en banger

nice, good, independent rock n roll uh music.

Smashed eggs on toast quite nice init

Full late 2000s vibe. Made me feel like Paris Hilton a bit

Better than the first on the list, dance till your dead is pretty iconic culture wise but other than that there was no head turners

Very energetic and fun. Good for running or walking, less for sitting and reading. Fave track: dull life

I preferred the acoustic versions of the songs.

I have always really enjoy the popular songs from YYY. But the rest of there songs leave me wanting more. Beautiful voice from the singer.

I fell off a bit over the holidays but there didn’t seem to be anything too pressing that I missed. This however is a great album and highly underrated band. It’s a shame that their music has become part of various TikTok dances, but it’s also cool to see them being exposed to a new generation. It’s like a Gen Xer fucking to Englebert Humperdink.

Pretty peppy!

I’ve heard heads will roll mixed so many times so cool to hear the og

Kinda like it but not my style exactly Will I listen to again: 20%

I knew "Heads Will Roll" from "Dance Till You're Dead", so it was cool to hear it. Solid album overall.

I love her vocals and heads will roll is a banger. Skeletons was another good one and great album art. A pleasant listen overall :)

my aunt laura loves this album freaking cool

This is #day134 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... another Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. Weird. As I mentioned before (when I got Fever To Tell earlier on this list), this band has never really clicked for me. While their debut was mostly unlistenable (or maybe I just wasn't in the right mood), this one has some good moments. It's well-produced, with interesting arrangements, melodic, and all that. But it still doesn't grab me. It feels like a blend of Blondie and Franz Ferdinand + synths. I love Blondie, and I'm not a fan of the latter, but I don't see the point of needing another Blondie, you know? One song did stand out, though, and that's "Runaway." I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day135.

I would definitely rock my side swept bangs to some of the tunes on this album in 2000s. But it gets kind of repetitive. Also, I found the acoustic versions simply unbearable.

Good songs and i liked the acoustic song versions

Nothing special about this one

Hey, I recognize Heads Will Roll. This seems like a groovy album. I dig it, but it wasn't amazing. It's middle of the road. 3

I dug this. I do like a good woman fronted electronica group. Brazilian Girls, HAIM, Ladyhawke, Goldfrapp, The Start, JJamz, Ladytron, The Sounds, New Young Pony Club all come to mind as I am a fan. This had a bit stronger of a rock feel combined with the electronica. I felt that the album started strong and then towards the end got a bit repetitive with melodies and note selection. Overall I liked it and am interested in listening to other albums.

Heads will Roll is my favorite track. Some of this is fun but overall it’s inconsistent.

Compared to the early dirty punkrock years this comes in more like a third wave of synth pop album. Very slick, a bit too clean but yet reduced to its essence. I am nit overwhelmed but it‘s a decent pop record.

There is a yeah yeah yeah’s album that belongs on this list, but it’s Fever to Tell.

Nice electronic indierock. A bit average, but like it at least for the Karen O dramatic vocals

I remember hating this music in 2009. It’s solid now. High 3

It was up and down. One great song, a few duds, and some good songs

Cool album but not really my preferred genre of music I likes the more energetic songs than the softer ones. If they had more of that I'd rate it higher Heads Will Roll is obviously a banger, and I liked Dull Life too

totally serviceable and totally mystifying why it's on this list

Pretty Good

Heads will roll got me going in the library! There were so much better songs on the album which was nice

Good album. Seems to be more disco influenced than the other album of theirs on this list. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Me after two songs: oh boy does this slap, I am never going to get tired of this sound Me after five songs: okay maybe I am getting a little tired of this sound

Karen O is great... this was a fun record and honestly the cover is cool as hell.

i do like a couple songs but i had sorta a hard time locking into this one. it was fun and enjoyable but not my fav!

Starts off as good as any great album with zero and heads will roll but fails to sustain the momentum

Overall 6/10. Solid with a couple songs I liked Some instrumentals were too repetitive but it's not that bad.

Oh yes another data point on the metric of the garbage of portishead

I really liked their first (?) album, Fever to Tell; I didn't really listen to the rest of their stuff after that, so it was nice to revisit this band. This album was all right; it definitely sounds like the group has "matured," if that makes sense; it sounds like an album made by older people. To that end, it lacks the rock-grittiness that I found appealing in the first place, which is a pity. However, this album is pretty solid, and worth a revisit.

This was always about where YYYs fell off the Maps for me (see what I did there?) but this relisten was worth it for Hysteric. terrific song

This wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and I even recognized a song or 2. Lot of like pop synth sounding music. Not awful.

Interesting depth to their sound and kinda complex melodies... But it's still hella pop sounding. Makes me feel 80s 90s kinda memories oh well 3 stars

Yeah it was okay

Not a bad album, "Heads Will Roll" is a certified banger, but it just isn't their best album. Good enough of a listen though.

I truthfully only listened to one song.

It's Halloween and I got an album featuring the singles "Heads Will Roll" and "Skeletons". That's fun This is a decent album with cool synths and great vocals. After the heights of the first two tracks the rest of the songs are not as good, IMO

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would

I fully expected to like this one more. 3/5

Never listened to any of YYY before. Not bad.

I lost interest around song 11, so it was very hard to continue listening to the remainder of the album. But I did it for you—1001 Album Generator!!!

23/10/24 Bang average, one decent song on the album.

While tracks like Heads Will Roll still stay relevant, though mostly because of social media and party movies, there isn't a whole lot else here that persisted very far. That being said, it still holds up today and has a ton of fun tracks, and it is by no means boring or unoriginal. My favorites here were Soft Shock, Heads will Roll, Dull Life, and Runaway.

I would have a hard time saying if this is better than Fever To Tell. It’s definitely more polished and the expanded instrumentation leads to more variety. It’s just a different flavor of good. Favorite songs were Zero, Heads Will Roll, Dull Life, and Hysteric.

Well composed pop punk, with synth beats, and mellow lulls. I have personally not ever had the click with the Yeahs, but the album is solid nonetheless. I prefer the punk forward sound of their early career.

I certainly didn't think we would get two by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Yeah, yeah, yet here we are. I feel similar about this album as I did the previous Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I listened to. Very pleasant and this album seems to have received rave reviews when it came out. I liked the upbeat songs a bit more than the quieter songs. Heads Will Roll is a great song and the entire first half is really good as well. Not sure we needed two albums by this band, mostly because I don't know if I think what they are doing here is much better than what other groups were doing at the time.

It was fine, first 2 songs were the best.

More like meh meh mehs

Significantly better than the other YYY album. Skeletons sounds like an Odesza song. Felt like a stronger first half than the second. I want to give this a 4 because I hated the other YYY album so much, but that would be a bit biased. High 3, though.

1000x better than that last Yeah Yeah Yeahs album that had Maps on it. Still pretty generic rock but did throw in some cool guitar parts. The singer wasn't absolutely rubbish in this one so that is make this weigh much higher.

I like the album. But I can’t muster up more than 3 stars though.

Very different from their first album which I am far more familiar with. Their change of direction to more electronic sound might have reflected their increasing popularity as I can imagine this having a wider appeal and sounding amazing live.

Not as impressive as their later stuff. Passable.

LIKED ONE SONG

Starts strong and kind of becomes the same song over and over. Still pretty good

One that feels like it should be in my wheelhouse...but I've never been blown away by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's fine. But not one of my favorites.

Pretty good...

Not my favorite yeah yeah yeah album.

I thought this album was fine, but only the last two songs made me feel much of anything, and I still think neither get close to the height of "Maps" as a song. Overall, it's a fine album, and I can't find faults to put it at a 2, but I can't say I have any interest in ever listening to it again.

Pretty good one certified banger
