It's Blitz!

There were a few sounds I really enjoyed on this album. Heads will roll and Dull life were my favorites. The acoustics really showed the vocal quality. Better than the other Yeah Yeah Yeahs album.

I thought this album was SO much better than Fever to Tell. Had highs and lows throughout the album and I actually enjoyed it overall. Heads Will Roll is fantastic.

6 years added a lot of polish. I gave their first album 1 star, this had VAST improvement. I dug it a lot.

Not my bag

Actually liked this a lot! There were some really great tracks in there, I don't know why I've never really listened to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I heard Maps and was like "not for me," but didn't really give any of their other stuff a chance. Zero was the standout for me.

A perfect mix of The Bangles, Garbage and No Doubt. In fact, if Susanna Hoffs, Shirley Manson and Gwen Stefani could somehow have a baby together, well, that would be weird. But if Jack and Meg White would have had a baby, that baby would likely be a lot like Yeah Yeah Yeahs vocalist Karen O. Hell, they probably would have named her Karen O. Are we counting the bonus acoustic versions in our review? Because I prefer some of those to the original version. This also led me to the band's great cover of Big Star's "Thirteen", which means something. Just an overall great listen, acoustic tracks included. It falls maybe an iota short of classic status, but since it's new to me, I'm hoping multiple listens will improve it up that small notch.

'Heads will roll' is such a banger. It's a pretty solid album all round. they remind me a lot of the band Metric, in particular with the vocals. First three songs lead to a strong start, a punchy punky party album. Very suddenly becomes a bit more melancholic with 'Skeletons' which threw me, only to be whiplashed back to those fast beats with 'Dull Life' before winding down to more melodic songs once again. The final song 'Little Shadow' comes across almost like a lullaby and is a very sweet way to end what started as quite a raucous album.

This was a cool album. She has a great voice - sounds a lot like Chrissie Hynde - and the songs were catchy and interesting. Highlight was probably "Heads Will Roll" but I also like "Zero" a lot. I think her voice turns a lot of these songs from 2's to 4's but they're still 4's regardless.

I had never listened to this band before, but I really liked this album. I love pop music that manages to be a bit challenging in terms of its lyrics. Musically, it works great and the production is excellent 4/5

Kind of interesting but occasionally bland 2000's era "Indie Rock". For some reason I never connected with a lot of bands from this era. Wikipedia classifies it as "Alternative Pop" - I can see that. Maybe a bit too pop-oriented for me to really connect to it. Not bad but not really into it either.

Having just reviewed "Fever to Tell" a couple of weeks ago, I was glad to get another Yeah Yeah Yeahs album to review. That one hadn't been my favorite, but I knew there was something about the band that I really liked. I really enjoyed this one a lot more! I like the groove of it very much. I even found that I had known and liked a YYYs song, "Heads Will Roll," a song I've heard here and there without knowing the artist. (I see that it was mashed up with Thriller on Glee.) It is my favorite on the album. It had everything I liked about the first album with a much more polished sound.

This is the second Yeah Yeah Yeahs album to be served to me on 1001. I enjoyed this one much more than the first one. I guess it is the dancier vibe to the album. But, it also could simply be my mood today versus the other day...

Really surprised by this one! It's so different from Fever to Tell which we had just two weeks ago. The sound is cleaner and seems more intentional. Dance beats but still an alt-rock sound. I dig it!

Surprise! A scant two weeks after the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ debut album shows up here we get another one recorded six years later. I loved their debut but hadn’t expected a second album on this list from them. I also did not expect to love IT’S BLITZ! even more than the first album. This is a stunning evolution. Karen O’s incredible vocals shimmer over glittering synths and driving dance floor beats. Heavy doses of disco and new wave transform the band as Karen O achieves Blondie-levels of greatness. The opening track “Zero” erupts pure glitter as the dance floor lights up around me and a cascade of lights fill the room. How’d I wind up in the coolest club in town?! “Holy shit!” was my last thought as I lost myself in this incredible song. No chance of leaving the dance floor now as “Heads Will Roll” fires a one-two disco punch. This is the sort of song that gets you dancing by yourself without giving a fuck about who’s around. The drums keep time as Karen O rules the dance floor on a wave of synths and gritty guitars. This is no sterile electronic environment. These songs cozy up like best friends sharing moments of joy, sadness, pain, love and surrender. How the hell does an album get this cool?! Karen O would be right at home in a silver body suit on a series of disco-oriented tracks like “Dragon Queen.” They’re joined by lush ballads like the piano-driven “Runaway” or the guitar-and-organ-powered “Little Shadow,” perfect for coming down with that special someone at the end of a night. Songs like “Faces” and “Hysteric” add a zest of Tegan and Sara quirkiness… so much to discover! IT’S BLITZ! invites you to dance and chill with the coolest trio in town. Get your leather on… ‘cause you’d be crazy to pass up this much fun!

Tek sam sad jebeno skužio šta pršći na slici. Jebeno jaje. Prvo sam mislio buket jaglaca... Album je fin, pogotovo sa njihovom najpoznatijom kompozicijom Heads Will Roll, al bogami ima i drugih isto tako dobrih stvari.

Energetic modern sounding pop for the unmasses. Fabulous as a live band, equally fantastic when recorded, this album has a couple of absolute bangers, and several more contemplative tracks, which as a whole makes for a great balance. Top tracks: Zero, Heads will roll, Shame and fortune

Enjoyed it. Was very familiar with Heads Will Roll, liked it then, liked it now. The rest was also good. Though the tone of album really chained from the first few songs to the last. Which is not a problem in itself but the tonal differences were so big that I caught myself wondering if it was still the same album.

It's like LCD Soundsystem for your mom and with really nothing it sets out to tell you, it's just kinda there and wants to piss off fans of the previous albums, but in retrospect over a decade later, fuck it, you'll probably like it too!

2000s perfection

A hard album to assess. The album has a real sweep to it, a sense of ideas being mustered, and a evident passion. So why am I not responding to this as warmly as I should? Maybe it's the middle. Like your mum aged 22, there's palpable sag in the middle. It could be me: I was at uni when this came out, and the hype of the New York rock revival never persuaded me, despite the constant claims of Sonics/Gang of Four/New Order parentage. Possibly it's my aversion to record-collection rock, and I'm not impressed by a rehash of Bizarre Love Triangle. But ultimately the Yeah Yeah Yeahs just aren't enough. You want more. Listening to them, you want them to be a little more melodic, a little more emotional, a little more abrasive, a little more arctic, a little more erotic, a little more bombastic, a little more detached, a little more serene, a little more urban, a little more experimental and a little more fun. You have here a decent band, sure, and that's fine, but a decent band is not a great band, and even though I want to root for them now, I find I can't outright.

Didn’t do a ton for me despite the glossy sheen of the presentation. I could see someone finding this amazing and I wouldn’t fight them over it, it just didn’t land with me.

It's a fun album with a distinct sound. I wouldn't mind putting the Yeah Yeah Yeahs into a rotation of music to listen to more often than once, so for that, 4 stars. The acoustic songs at the end of the album are also a nice touch. Great to hear the song without the heavy synth presence.

I love this album! It starts off with two absolute bangers and then slowly descends into a more relaxed melodic vibe. Listened to the album twice in a row I enjoyed it that much!

I wouldn't call myself a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, but I know a couple of their albums alright. Nothing here stood out compared to their other stuff.

Flat and uninspiring.

The more I listened to it the more I liked it. The first two tracks don’t really flow with the remainder of the album. Some of the tracks had hints of the Pierces and the Bangles. Enjoyable and certainly one I would listen to again

That's a cool album cover. Oh the music? Another one going in fully blind on as I know nothing about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and I like the way it starts with "Zero" - but (and I'm typing as the song ends) I'm wondering if the entire album is going to be this similar up-tempo electronic dance vibe. Which would be fine but is it going to bore me over the better part of an hour....? One thing that immediately grabbed me halfway through is the actual *tone* and *sounds* of the (plentiful) synths - they're great. "Soft Shock" has that deep and full/growly bass that really sounds fantastic. I like a lot of electronic music but making electronic music *be* a rock band often loses something for me. And I feel a little of that early on here, even if each song on its own is pretty good....but - as it turns out I found myself already pre-judging the record because after 4 pretty decent studio songs the next batch starting with "Dull Life" completely changes it up and this record feels more...alive. I found there was a definite ebb and flow in my interest over the album - e.g. I wasn't not that into "Dragon Queen" which was where I'd feared the album might go and it does peter out a bit for me near the end, i.e over the last 4 songs. Will this album stand up for me over repeated listens? I'm hoping it does - there were no songs that immediately jumped at me to give me chills but it also seems a little wrong to only give this a 3 as there's more variety than I ever expected and although the song construction isn't anything revolutionary, the production does push it into more-interesting territory. Call it a 3.5. 7/10 3 stars

Both the band and their music are new to me. I don't recall even hearing their name before this album came up on the Generator. When the first track started, I was a little worried it would be too dance-floor-y for my liking, but not so. Some of the tracks kept me engaged nicely, like 'Skeletons.' Others didn't really click for me, sometimes gets a little screechy for me, but I like the band's overall sound and style so I can appreciate the work here. (Side Note: the playlist of the album that came up for me included some acoustic versions of the songs on this album -- I don't think they were included in the original album when it was released -- and some of those versions are interesting.)

J'ai toutefois décidé de ne plus rédiger de review dans son enceinte mais dans des endroits, à mon sens, plus sécurisés. Je m'explique. À mon arrivée dans l'auberge hier soir, la réceptionniste, après avoir vérifié mon identité et mon qr code, me tendit un document qu'elle me somma de signer à toute vitesse. Je décidai de prendre le temps de lire son contenu. Quelle ne fut pas ma surprise de voir qu'il s'agissait d'une critique élogieuse de l'album It's Blitz des Yeah Yeah Yeahs pré-rédigée par leur soin et signée de mon nom robcrinière. Je me saisis du papier, le déchirai, en fis une boule que je lançai à la figure de la réceptionniste avant de prendre d'assaut les escaliers et de rejoindre mon lit.

Cet album était sympathique, mais nous ne sommes pas là pour commenter la qualité des albums. Je tenais aujourd'hui à féliciter Yeah Yeah Yeahs, qui s'empare de la tête du classement des noms de groupes le plus nul du générateur. Et ce n'etait pourtant pas gagné d'avance face a la ribambelle de groupe en The, que j'ai déjà évoquée dans une precédente review. Attention cependant, car je peux voir dans mon historique qu'un artiste du nom de "Yes" m'attend d'ici quelques albums (pas besoin de vous rappeler pourquoi j'ai quelques albums de retard, étant donné que vous suivez tous attentivement mes reviews). L'habit ne fait pas le moine donc.

Liked this, Good Album

Love the covert photo of the exploding egg! And that just about exhausts my praise. I would call It's Blitz a failure except that you have to actually attempt something to fail. It's Blitz is deeply mediocre in every imaginable way: songcraft, synth textures, arrangements, and production. This is kind of the late oughts version of bubblegum music like the Archies, but with shitty synths and inferior songwriting. Except for the vocals, this album could have been generated by a reasonably sophisticated AI. That's how generic and uncreative it is. I complain a lot about modern hip hop in this channel, but It's Blitz makes those albums look like the height of sophistication and ambition. If I could give this half a point, I would. Mind numbing.

The thing with YYYs is that the lyrics bounce back and forth between inspired and insipid with little to no warning. That said, this album is really quite good and just gets better as the album went out. The back half of the album is straight fire. This only misses a 5-star review because of a few, pretty goofy tracks at the beginning.

A more disco direction, it’s a big job for this album to deliver after the opening salvo of Zero / Heads Will Roll. There are moments where the enthusiasm dips but overall it is quality.

Forgot how good an album this is

Another band that I had never listened to previously and was surprised it had been nominated a grammy in 2009 for best alternative album. In listening to it several times, I find while I don't dislike it, it also doesn't particularly move me in any way. Just kind of mediocre. Heads will Roll and Dull Life are the best in my opinion. 3.4/4.0

It’s ok. Nothing that really moved me. As I was listening a song came on that was really good … but I realized album was over and Spotify had suggested me an Arcade Fire tune. So 2.5 stars, which I’ll round down

It's a nice album, but is it really worthy of being on the 1001 albums list? Seems like prototypical indie rock - not bad but nothing special either. 2.5 stars.

Not perhaps as influential as their earlier work but a great example of talent, production and vision delivering a cohesive outcome that stands the test of time.

Uno bop

I'm already familiar with this album and man what a disappointment this album was. I remember being very much into this group from late middle school into high school, and I had already devoured every release they had made up to this point. From what I recall it felt overall a bit uninspired, much like all of their later work from here on out (with each release having a decreasing amount of good material). It's one of those trajectories that constantly makes me wonder how a successful group of artists could actually continue to stay at the level of inspiration required to keep making good shit. Not to say this is a horrible album but it definitely pails in comparison to the last couple albums, which contain front to back bangers, while this one only has maybe half of a good album at best.

This was an album I poo-pood quite a bit for a long time, and listening to it now I'm not entirely sure why I did that. I can get down with this.

Heads Will Roll - best song of all time? Dull Life, Runaway, Hysteric, and Little Shadow all great

Skeletons and Hysteric stood out.

Electrifying. Karen O is a rock and roll goddess and the band has a blast on this record. Every song is just a ton of fun, very original, and a lot of good grooves too.

First notes yeah ! Wasn’t expecting a song like skeletons. Dull life is exactly what I want out of a song.

I liked this. It was interesting, a bit rocky but not too much. Kind of like a rockier Regina Spector.

Jam packed with tasty synth-fueled indie jams. Feels like it’s cut from the same cloth as Florence + the Machine, but they used that cloth to make tight jumpsuits instead of flowy dresses. It may be a Friday morning, but this album makes me long for Saturday night.

Very nice synths mixed with Indie rock guitars. Indie dance golden age vibe. Starts of very powerfully, ends with multiple acoustic ballads. Those are, still, very mesmerizing as the singers voice beautifully carries them

A bit frustrating, but only because its so close to being really good. I think its the dance influence that throws me off. Album brings me back to my first job which was basically a Hot Topic in an amusement park and it was around the time this album came out so I probably listened to a few of these songs

This album was really fun to come back to for me. When I first got into YYYs back in the day I was an indie rock or die kid to the bone, so I loved their first album because it just straight up rocked so hard. I then listened to It's Blitz! and was like "aw man this is lame they're all dancey and selling out," and that sort of pretentious youngster attitude shit. Several years ago though, I really started to explore electronic, dance-rock, and synth-punk stuff a lot more and found myself getting waaaaay into it. So now this album sounds fantastic to me! Karen O has always had such an incredibly emotive voice. It can be raw and wild while still sounding beautiful, which turns out is a great fit for this dancey album. "Heads Will Roll" is a bop of course, but my other standouts were "Soft Shock," and the sweet "Little Shadow." It was also cool to see long time YYYs producer Dave Sitek (member and producer of TV On The Radio) let loose a bit with the dance drums and stuff. The following year he released a fantastic solo album "Maximum Balloon" that features Karen O and a bunch of other artists on some real fun dance tracks. Would highly recommend. Got to love 1001 albums for making me go back and listen to this gem that my dumb younger self thought was too pop. SMH

No me gusta nada

I had the remix of Heads Will Roll on high rotation in my car and spinning classes back in the day. I was pleasantly surprised to hear so many other catchy songs on this album. I like the combination of synths and guitars throughout and the way the songs build in intensity. Dull Life really rocks. The singer reminds me a bit of Emily Haines of Metric. Good song-writing overall - they stay with you pretty qucikly.

Finally a good electro pop album. Zero checks a lot of boxes for me. HEADS WILL ROLLL. The album starts to peter out after that but its got great electro rock grooves throughout

For me Karen O’s wonderful voice has always been the most notable thing about this band. She can rock out with the best of them and then completely soften her tough edge with mellower songs like Little Shadow and Skeleton.

Underappreciated alternative band from the 00s, the album itself has very different feelings which speaks to the range of this band.

I thought this was pretty good. I think that pretty much everyone knows "Heads Will Roll", but I hadn't heard any other song. I would rather listen to this again than "Toys in the Attic" again.

Pretty cool album! laughably I did not realize 'heads will roll' was by this band and was caught way off guard. The album is an interesting mix of Rock/Dance , would love a party where stuff like this was the dancing vibe. A few tracks like 'dull life' and 'runaway' were the standouts for me. All in all, a cool album I would never be mad to hear come on, but would rarely select - classic 3.5 || An Aside: The first few notes of 'Dragon Queen' made me think they were about to play KoRn's "Falling Away From Me" and caught me by surprise every time it came on. Listen to it - eerily similar, for real!

I'm much less familiar with this album than "Fever To Tell", and there's no nostalgia bump. The first few tracks feel poppier, and then it gets more whistful? Those are both pleasant modes for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to adopt. Fave track - "Dull Life" - though I think I need to give the album a couple more listens, as there are some other contenders there, for sure...

Weak 808 pop, might re-listen to two songs but I wouldn’t bet on it

When I first heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs I was blown away. I heard them a lot a lot, and now I generally avoid them. I realized in listening to this album, I definitely avoid because of overexposure. They are so solid and I will come back to this band hard in a decade or so.

Similar to Metric in the way her voice floats above the instruments with seemingly sparse midrange.

I hadn't listened to this album since it first came out. It's well produced with some really great songs. Nice snapshot of that era

This is a good album, it has a strong open and very good close. The middle lost me for a bit but luckily the ending pulled things together. I didn’t hate listening to it but I also didn’t enjoy it the whole time

Day 25 of Albums You Must Hear... Next up on my list of randomly generated music is an album titled Blitz! by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, released in 2009. Not gonna lie, I’m not super familiar with this band. The first track, Zero, had me optimistic. Okay, this is going to be a dance/punk record. Heads Will Roll, the second track, is so good that I was super stoked for the rest of the album! Then, this album took a nosedive into loneliness and despair. While the production is top tier, and the vocals of singer Karen O are satisfying to listen to, this albums premature crescendo left me with musical blue balls. In all fairness, music is closely tied to the mood of the listener, and if you’re in the state of mind for the last 8 of the ten tracks on Ok Blitz!, I’m completely understanding. Maybe I got this album at the wrong time, but I couldn’t give it more than a couple listens. I’m not shitting on this album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, just after hearing the first two songs I felt honey dicked. You can’t name your album Blitz! with an exclamation point and then lose all momentum after two songs in. On that note, in conclusion, Heads Will Roll is REALLY good and I’d totally add that song to a playlist in a heartbeat. Please share your thoughts, memories and opinions!

Enjoyable synth

Great album, not the best of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but a great album

I knew the song “Off With Their Heads” prior to hearing the full album. Overall I thought it was fun. I didn’t write anything down while listening and I don’t know any of the song titles, but it was a solid listen. I think more than anything it was nice to have something more ‘modern’. I think I liked the front half more than the back, but as I’ve mentioned before that is something that happens a lot to me, even with my favorite albums. I wish I had taken more notes, haha.

High energy excellent modern indie. some great haunting tunes near the end, solid album throughout with no weak tracks

3.5 5 stars for firs two songs, 2-4 for rest of album

First two songs are good (Heads will roll is top tier) but then it drops off and is okay but nothing spectacular

This isn't awful but it's pretty boring. Basic indie rock for basic hipsters. like if you thought the strokes was a bit too dangerous, maybe you'd like this. I dunno, not for me. 2/5.
