Reviews (page 6 of 14)

Soulful and somber, while still remaining quite fun and explosive at times. The record is a 5, but Rehab is like a 2 at best though.

One of the greatest pop albums ever

Such a unique voice and a tragic loss.

Needs no comment. Flawless from composition to lyrics to delivery to production.

Really good. I had only ever heard the first two songs before. The album was great. Her voice is unique.

Great performer and album. Tragic we'll never get to see what she would have done with a whole life's worth of music. This album is and will continue to be a classic. When she hit the scene, it was the right vibe at the right time to be so huge. An updated take on a classic style. I don't listen to Amy Winehouse too often but it's nice knowing this music is there whenever I do want to listen.

i like it

i worked in hmv as a christmas temp while this was a new album. it was played every hour. despite suffering the type of forced overplaying that would usually make me pierce my eardrums with knitting needles this album is just really fucking good. one of the other albums forced upon me was a buble christmas one and some killers album that hmv had a million copies of that no one wanted to buy so it 100% isn't stockholm syndrome. mark ronson is a nuclear grade cunt though.

Truly awesome album. Shame I have it on cheap vinyl.

Rehab or bust

Full of amazing tracks, realized to their full potential by an excellent production team. Original and innovative, propelled by Amy's desire to take from the best of 60s soul and R&B, which matches insanely closely in each of the songs. At first, "Tears Dry On Their Own" kept messing with me due to the Gaye interpolation, but eventually, it established its own identity and became a groovy highlight of the album for me. The main highlight is Amy's ability to combine her powerful vocals with equal emotions that cover autobiographical themes of depression, alcoholism, and loneliness. There's a lot of diversity in these tracks, but most are able to grab your attention. There's ska in "Just Friends," swing in "Addicted," and jazz overlaying Motown-inspired R&B in many of the rest. This is the first album I really loved hearing the deluxe edition, just because I love the unique combination of soul and ska... and also because several of those ska covers are from a favorite of mine: The Specials. Shame "Valerie" isn't included in the normal album, it's just as perfect. Favorite tracks: You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, Tears Dry On Their Own, He Can Only Hold Her

Love love love

Damn this is a good one. I knew so many of these songs individually but have never listened to the whole thing through. It's really good. The Jazz and soul vibes are great, but there's even some Reggae mixed in on the deluxe version that really is fantastic

Love the soulful vocals on this, really elevated the lyrical content a lot more. Production also kicked ass with its shmancy asthetic for the whole duration of the album. Favorites: You Know I'm No Good, Back To Black, Tears Dry On Their Own, Valerie (from deluxe)

I mean, it's not Frank, which I believe is the better album lyrically (there is a rawness to it that I feel was polished off in this album), but it's still a superb piece of music. Hearing this the year of its 15 anniversary, when I'm personally 6 years older than Amy ever will be, just underscores how much of a musical talent she was. I know this will be stuck in my head for days now.

One of my constants when I'm working. Great album from a phenomenal artist who's gone too soon.

One of my all time favorites

CLASSIC. Amy winehouse is a modern pop icon that establishes its influece well in a new light

Easy to get lost in the lifestyle bullshit, but jesus, what a voice. Fantastic album.

The best

I mean cmon....

This was yet another time when I had known and (really) loved a few songs, but wishing so much I'd gotten the album back in the day!! Upon listening, I was so happy to hear the familiar first two songs: the always incredible "Rehab" and the glorious, sultry "You Know I'm No Good" (I forgot how much I love that song). THEN! THEN! THEN! A glorious, soulful, retro intro leads to "What kind of fuckery is this?" and I think I laughed and yelled and I immediately listened to that intro about 7 times over again and this is when I knew I should have bought the damn album a long time ago. I listened to the song "Back to Black" about 12 times today, because I forgot it was one of my favorites ever and I missed it lots. (I also had missed some of those lyrics! Whoa!) "Tears Dry on Their Own" with the homage to "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" was so cool and good (ran out of adjectives, sorry). I was going to say that "Addicted" wasn't my favorite until I heard what she rhymed that word with. I was so glad to have listened to Solomon Burke the day before, because Winehouse's connection to 60s soul music is so loving and spot on. I read that she wouldn't listen to anything from after 1967. I absolutely love her voice and her songs. I love the instrumentation and the retro feel that still seems fresh and new. I loved getting a top of the tops album at this point in this project. How I wish she were still with us.

Absolutely!!

I’ve owned BACK TO BLACK and listened to it regularly since shortly after its release. The album is a masterpiece that propelled the sound of the 60s into the 21st Century. It still feels fresh and modern 15 years after its release. Amy Winehouse’s delivery is spectacular on every song. I could list any song on it as a favorite. "Addicted" may be the best weed song ever. "Rehab" is a revelation. "Tears Dry On Their Own" is a showcase of brilliant phrasing. BACK TO BLACK is perfection.

Masterful

Beautiful voice, stunning album.

I always wanted to listen this album. That’s a good chance :)

I haven't heard this one in awhile. Love this album so much. R.I.P. Amy

I always found "Rehab" annoying, but the rest is very solid. Well worth the listen.

One of the most perfect pairings of songwriting and production of the 21st century

Tears on doy one

This is awesome. Enough said

Amyyyy

Classic alert! My dad used to play this one when I was a kid, but would skip the bits with the swear words if I was there

This has been one of my favorites for quite some time now. And that's saying a lot since I was about 11 when it came out. Giving it another listen, I don't really feel that different. It's fresh, full of emotion, raw, and honest. And I couldn't ask for more.

Such an incredible talent. It’s a shame she died so young but at least we have this masterpiece to remember her by. 5 stars.

Lets gooooooo Comeon thats a five and I havent even heard it today yet

One of my absolute favourite albums. Regularly listen to this and it never gets old. Every track is excellent.

A classic, awesome.

Would be 4.5. There were 2 tracks I didn't care for, but mostly great.

Killer album, should listen more often. Even the songs that aren’t hits are really pleasant. I’m not sure I ever gave enough credit to her band and co.

I love this album.

Some great songs

Ken ik al natuurlijk. Geweldig.

Amy Winehouse was a very talented person. Sad she left the world too soon. Great Album. One of a kind voice.

Modern lyrics, classic style, and extraordinary execution.

Great album.

I see this album still being considered a classic in a couple of decades.

A twist of modern soul. Her voice was gorgeous!

Great feel.

Tao bom quanto o outro Back to Black

A classic. Must admit, I didn’t enjoy revisiting as much as I thought I would but still feel it deserves top marks

A 5 star album, as simple as that. Takes me back to nights out in Camden and my time at MTV. One of my faves albums of all time.

An amazing album from start to finish. Great production and a generational talent. I'd say this is my first 5/5 that would also be a 10/10.

Amazing album!

Fondamentale

Modern classic

Solo ella...

No notes needed

I remember hearing about Amy Winehouse, but I never really listened to any of her music. I like 60s music, and this is inspired by that era, so I liked it pretty well. It was smooth to listen to.

Miss her. Love is a losing game- forgot how much I loved that song.

Short and sweet. A modern classic.

there isn’t a single song on this album that isn’t good. amy I’m in love with you

know like every word to this album proper classic

awesome!

CLASSIC

Powerful lyrics portrayed by an even more powerful voice. Amy's best piece. Loved it...

I think rehab is one of the best songs of the 21st century so far and the rest of album is great as well

modern, bluesy, raw. I love this album and tragic artist.

Very soulful vocals. Funny jokes about relationships.

ALL HAIL AMY!

One of the great lives of my life

Weeeeee Amyyyyyy

can't stop crying when I listen to it

I've never listened to Amy Winehouse before. Sadly. Her voice is amazing. The song writing was great. This was just a great album.

One of the artists I am still, even today, sad is gone. This is a great album, and a style that wasn't being done in those days. A great loss. The title track is so good, and Rehab, of course. Classic album, all-timer for me.

I mean...

hands down one of the best albums ever made (also listened to the deluxe version, disc 2 contains a lot of good covers <3)

Sound that compares her to Janis Joplin in many ways. Nobody will ever be as gritty and soulful as Janis. Amy comes close.

RATING: 8.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: Back to Black LOWLIGHT: Just Friends

Amy Winehouse was a curiosity when she cropped up in 2006. Rehab was everywhere. Commercials, radio, your headphones, tv, you name it. Part confessional pop singer and part sleazy lounge act, Amy did a great job of blending the old with the new in her own style, and it caught on. Jazz, bossa nova, big band, you name a style of the 50s/60s, and she’s touching on it here. It feels pretty timeless honestly, without the conventions of 2000s jazz pop adding datedness to it. While every song isn’t great, there’s enough here to say it’s a good album worth inclusion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

RIP queen

4.3 Very solid, with all due respect, I could take, or leave her vocals/voice.

There is clipping / saturation and kind of bad de-essing on the vocals in some songs, for all the rest it's a good album.

The infamous Amy Winehouse. She can sing, no doubt! The musical is not my favourite, however - which is why I don't own this album. But I always recognized her as a musical talent.

Muy bueno, para escucharlo almenos una vez

No skips so sultry and fun to sing along to

This has aged so well. A very cool record by one of pop musics most tragic persons.

Smoky, wine-soaked backdoor deals, deal the cards and turn down the lights. And turn up this fuckery.

Amy is unique and this album puts her heart in all of ours. it’s really connective and blusey and soulful. honestly who could not like it.

Unmatched talent stolen by music industry greed

Amy Winehouse, four stars...

Fairly decent album with a soul kick. Winehouse was an icon for sure.

34 minutes of Amy's beautiful soulful voice.

What a new wave RnB and a voice how and why such talents get lost so young ?

i find this era (and Ronson's throwback soul stuff in general) to be a bit flat and sterile but Amy is such a powerhouse that it wills it past that hurdle

it felt kinga short, but very good songs. iconic.

Man, this takes me back... I remember playing "Rehab" to go to sleep when I was a kid about 6 to 8 years old (I think). Weird track to sleep to, since it sounds very upbeat, but I guess it worked back then. Either way, this is a fantastic pop soul album that blends quite well a traditional and modern sound. The main attraction of this record is Amy Winehouse's incredible and emotional voice, but the instrumentation doesn't hold back either. Starting with the incredible "Rehab", the song offers some super catchy and memorable melodies from both the vocals and the horns playing. It is also quite ambitious, featuring a lot of different instruments that add a lot of detail, such as the bells. As I said, the nature of the track is very uplifting, even though the lyrics are quite tragic, with Amy stating that she refused to go to rehabilitation. Next is also one of the best songs of the album "You Know I'm No Good", the first hard hitting song with one of the most emotional performances from Amy. So much that it gives me the chills. I do also love how well the modern rhythm fits in, having a very similar sound to some hip hop beats. The following couple of tracks, "Me & Mr Jones" and "Just Friends" are really good soul songs, but they don't have the same power as the best tracks, which brings me to my next point: I think the album is carried by the singles. Not saying that there are truly weak spots. Nevertheless, the singles are either incredibly emotional or memorable, something the rest of tracks aren't as good at. So, after this pair comes the high point of the record, "Back To Black". It is unbelievable how great it is. The passion, the emotion, the melodies, the sadness and pain in the voice, the bells and strings in the choir... all these and the non mentioned elements create such a sentimental experience, that it makes me tear up every time I listen to it. Absolutely brilliant. Afterwards there are the last two remaining singles. First one is "Love Is a Losing Game", which while great, I think it is the weakest of the big tracks; and "Tears Dry On Their Own" being a quite uplifting with some beautiful and charming horns and voice melodies. The final four songs are a bit like "Me & Mr. Jones" and "Just Friends", great tracks, but not as big or striking as the highlights, even though I really liked the horns in "He Can Only Hold Her". One more thing I want to mention is that some songs sound a bit crispy as a result of the imitation of the sound of the 50/60's. It can be noted in the clipping of "Rehab", and specially in "Addicted", where the production is incredibly rudimentary. Overall, really nice and emotional album. I wish some of the tracks weren't so overshadowed by the standouts though.

One of those artists where I completely understand why she’s well-liked. She’s clearly super talented, and I can see the appeal, but she’s just not for me.

Very good.

Album #118, Amy Winehouse, Back to Black ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Never listened to this the whole way through before. Obviously I knew a heap of songs off it because this was, and probably still is very ubiquitous music. You don’t go far in the world without hearing Amy Winehouse somewhere. She deserved all the hype and all the plaudits that she got. This is a masterpiece. It really, really is. It’s a great soul record. It’s lively, it’s entertaining, it’s got a great pop sheen, but it’s also just a solid classic soul album. The differentiating factor that makes it unique is Amy Winehouse herself. She’s obviously got an amazing voice. There’s no disputing that. But her lyrics are really funny and really interesting. She’s got these little stories and vignettes laced in and out of the songs. Great use of language throughout too, including foul language. The use of the word “fuckery” was very entertaining and I really enjoyed it. I know there are co-writing credits, so it’s always difficult to tell how much someone wrote lyrically, but I’m going to assume she wrote most of these herself because the voice feels so consistent throughout. I think they’re great lyrics. They’re unique songs covering different topics that you don’t always hear. You get the obvious love songs, which are all great, but then you get something like Rehab, which is a really interesting topic to build such a huge pop song around. It’s also a short album, which I think works massively in its favour. It packs a lot into a relatively short running time. The songs are short, snappy and memorable. It’s not five stars for me personally, though, and I don’t think it’s necessarily a five-star album when I compare it to some of the very best records on this list. My main issue is the final song, Addicted. I don’t really like it. I think it’s actually quite juvenile compared to the rest of the album. I understand why it’s there. You get Rehab at the start and Addicted at the end, which gives the album a nice symmetry, but I just don’t think it’s a particularly strong closer. Everything before it, though, is great. So yeah, an absolute crying shame that she didn’t get to make more music and that she didn’t have a better life after this record. Because after an album this good, you can’t help but wonder what she might have gone on to do next. A hugely talented artist and a record that more than deserves its reputation.

Pleasant surprise. Still don’t like Rehab but title track, Tears Dry, and No Good all highlights. Low-end 4

I enjoyed this album

This is a very good and innovative album that reignited British soul music. Pitchfork: 6.4 [with controversy] Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #33 Best Songs Rehab You Know I'm No Good Back To Black Tears Dry On Their Own

Not my cuppa but clearly objectively good. “You know im no good” lyrics are great. Shoulda said “and sniffed me out like I was takeaway” though as i would have found that far more relatable. Rhyming door with roger moore is also a fantastic rhyme.

Very jazzy, last half was better than the first

CAN NEever go wrong with this album

Listening session: june 5th, while buying groceries Listened to before: listened to this album many times before Thoughts: an absolute classic album that I’ve listened to many times. The combination of Amy Winehouse’s soulful voice, Mark Ronson’s great production and the timeless songwriting is really special Favourite tracks: Back To Black, Love Is A Losing Game & Tears Dry On Their Own

Unique voice. Pleasant music. And a bunch of hits. A strong effort although it is not exactly my jam. 3,5

Surprised by how much I loved every song here. Back to Black and Rehab are great, but all these others really impressed. Wow!

Surprised how much I enjoyed this. Appreciated her Motown girl group sound. Liked almost every song.

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Back To Black, He Can Only Hold Her, Addicted. Just some loose thoughts for this one: - it's weird that I've somehow managed to have never heard any of Amy's music before. - it's equally weird that the person singing is the same person on the cover of the album. The voice just don't match the person, in my head. - it makes me sad to think about all of Amy's potential talent being... just gone. Forever. What could she have done in the past however many years if she were still alive. I think about that stuff from time to time. - overall I was impressed, mostly by the singing, but also the musical style/approach. A few tracks had catchy beats, which I liked, and I always appreciate when the subject matter is serious, mature themes and critiques.

Back to Black has to be my favourite track here.

oye por favor que quiero cosas nuevas

Man she just had "it". And the sad part is I know her best was still in front of her. This usually isn't my wheelhouse but her voice and personality is just undeniable. 8/10

Another poor young soul lost way too early. I have never sat down and listen to here but always knew she was something special. Reminiscent of old time jazz singers. Probably even thinking of giving this 4 stars. Several great songs here and of course great production, instrumentation and most important - Amy's great vocal delivery.

THEY TRIED TO MAKE ME GO TO REHAB

I liked it. Never was a fan when she was still around, but I have to admit, I missed out. Good album.

1. Rehab 8/10 2. You know I'm no good 9/10 3. Me & Mr.Jones 6/10 4. Just friends 5/10 5. Back to Black 10/10 iconic 6. Love is a Losing Game 8/10 7. Tears dry on their own 10/10 8. Wake up alone 5/10 9. Some Unholy War 6/10 10. He Can Only Hold Her 7/10 A bit more unique 11. Addicted Doesn't feel like a 2006 album, most of the songs just sound the same

It's almost haunting to revisit this album. I was an Amy fan back in the day, and was pretty affected when she died. Hearing these songs, so achingly self destructive, fills me with a kind of melancholy for the things she could have accomplished had she lived, as well as for the person I was back in the early 2000s. All of the emotional stuff aside, it is a wonderful album, with her signature voice underset by the impeccable playing of the proto-Daptone crew. I should definitely revisit some of her other stuff, it's got me in a funky mood. 4.5/5.

modern classic

She has the voice, she's messy, but passionate. And we all know ill take messy for purpose.

Such a talented artist with a life that was far too short. 🤍🤍 I like the album though!!

4.1/5 i like debut better but just as good for a follow up more jazzy

Overall Rating - 4.18/5 (8.36/10). Damn, that voice is incredible. Bluesy, 50s and 60s rock feel. Right up my alley.

That was objectively a good album.

I enjoyed this album a lot. I know the hits very well, of course, but it was great to listen closely to the lesser-known songs that don't get the attention they deserve. So talented and unique. 4/5

Amazing

I never listened to her when she was popular, although I was aware of her. Her sound is more “old fashioned” than I imagined. I liked it.

Solid album

A marked improvement over Frank, the songwriting has improved, her voice is incredible of course, and the production is phenomenal. The only song I was iffy on was "Just Friends" cause I wasn't too into the slight dub influence on the instrumental, it felt out of place for her. I also wish the album ended with a stronger batch of songs, but overall this record is pretty awesome.

kinda iconic. not my favourite and its not super outstanding. it has its skips but the good songs outweigh the bad ones such that im giving it a 4.

Felt a bit sad to receive this album, but what a throwback to hearing “Rehab” for the first time. Amy was (RIP) such a talented vocalist and the album was so fun to listen to. She is so rare and I don’t think we’ve had anyone quite like her since.

Very bluesy sound, her voice is beautiful and unique. The subject matters of the album are melancholic and her voice fits them very well

Super bekend album. Altijd leuk

Maybe 3.5. It’s about as good as I remember in the high spots. But it’s not all there.

Pretty good I already knew back to black song

This really needs a remaster but it doesn't even matter because the arrangements themselves are great and the songs are beautiful.

Pop and soul of 60s girl groups Rehab You know i'm no good

I know the singles well as they soundtracked the era so a nice nostalgia trip. Did not really get on with Frank - but this album is a much more commercial sounding - with a very retro soul vibe which is a much easier listen. Great voice/ great production.

She is so solid.

Great voice and soulful songs with good arrangements.

This was surprisingly ok, in fact I quite enjoyed the faster tracks. 😊

This album is a masterpiece

Uniquely powerful voice. My first time listening through the entire album. It’s good - not really my style, and some of the songwriting wasn’t the best, but definitely worth a listen.

it's 3.75

this is one of my favorite albums ever my favorite songs of it include wakeup alone me and mr jones and unholy war. amys voice is my favorite and as someone that likes singing her songs are fun to sing to and fit my range this album is a 9/10 i love it alot.

okejka

This is much better than the other one

it was pretty good, just not totally my vibe. some pretty good songs tho

Just an incredible album all the way through. This was not what I expected at all! My sister said that this is one of her favorite albums right now, so I decided to check it out, and it did not disappoint. Her voice was so beautiful, and she had so much potential. RIP Favorite Songs: Love is A Losing Hand, Back to Black, Me & Mr Jones Least Favorite Songs: Some Unholy War, Rehab

Emotional album, great production, good blending of genres for a unique and strong musical achievement. Not quite reaching the peak for me, but I get the love.

It's very stylish, maybe a bit repetitive in some parts.

When Amy was at peak popularity, I just really didn't like her. Rehab was so overplayed. Now, 20 years removed, I can appreciate her talent and the production of this album. I love the instrumentation. It is SURELY better than most of the garbage on this list. 4* Highlights: you know i'm no good, back to black

It would be difficult to find someone who couldnt find something to love about this album. For me, I love the strength in her vocals despite the fraility of her words and being. Her vocal power definitely help cover up the pain from her experiences. In a cheesy way, this album makes me feel like a badass who can keep tackling things as they come. Favorite- Love Is A Losing Game

A great album for any day but the day I listened the morning was cool and gloomy. Love Amy's voice and attitude. This is an easy album to listen all the way through. Favorite song was all of them but if I had to pick one, Back to Black.

Really great album overall. Her voice and the production are incredible. A lot of these tracks are classics. Favorite track(s) Rehab Back To Black Tears Dry On Their Own

Great 2000s neo soul with frank discussions if addition and heart break. I was too young to hear this as a kid, but I love it

It is interesting that both of Amy Winehouse’s albums are included on this list, I would say this is her definitive album. Troubled, and short-lived, this album was major and definitely deserves inclusion.

really wish she'd have said Yes, great voice with unique character; i'd have enjoyed getting more releases from Amy 4/5

Listen a liot to this back in the day, but only now appreciate the amazing instrumentals. Some duds on this album but overall so very good

I listened to this album a lot when it dropped. But this was probably my first full listen in 20 years. Amy’s vocal prowess is undeniable, and they definitely capture that Motown sound with an updated twist. But with all that said, it was not slapping for me the way I thought it would. The single tracks, Tears Dry on Their Own, Back to Black, and Rehab all are phenomenal and everything else was pretty good. Going 3.50/5.

It's a good album, i just never vibed with it

I don't have a whole lot to say about this. I liked it. Didn't love it. 3.5/5. RIP Amy, I wish she would have been able to make more music

She's got a great voice; lots of iconic songs here, what's not to love? I thought the retro doo-wop style of a lot of the tracks was a fun touch.

It’s tough to listen to this album without feeling sadness for how Amy Winehouse’s story ended, especially on the opener, “Rehab.” The album does have an indisputably enjoyable swagger about it and the songs are strong and impeccably-produced. Amy’s vocals and lyrics are another highlight… though sometimes the bluntness feels a little incongruous with music that wouldn’t have been out of place in the 1960s. Back to Black itself is a highlight, along with Love Is A Losing Game — probably my favorite pairing on the record. Maybe “Me & Mr Jones” is a slightly weak spot, but the album is strong throughout with no filler. Maybe there’s something a little too slick about the whole thing that keeps me at a slight distance. It’s a very good record that I wouldn’t mind hearing again.

Not looking forward to it to be honest. Let's see. I already know at least 4 songs on it and I'm not a big fan. I was wrong, Rehab I'm not a fan but the others are good. Really enjoyed overall. 4/5.

Damn what a good album. I’m torn between the 4 and 5 here. Love the couple of songs that sample older R&B grooves. And the sax on “you know that I’m no good” is such a classic. Think I’m gonna settle for a 4 but is really a 4.5. Second half of the album just doesn’t compare with the first. Fave songs: you know I’m no good, Tears Dry on Their Own

I've listened to this one before, great

Back to black is a classic, Amy wine houses voice is just iconic. I love when singers use Jazz-phrasing. The album has some of her best songs on it.

Fun mix of old style and modern content

I liked it. Good vibe.

I like Amy Winehouse a lot, but I have to admit I’ve never quite gotten the “voice of a generation” thing. My read is that she embraced a particular style, owned the fuck out of it, while also adding her own spin. And that spin is my favorite part. You can’t listen to any of her songs without feeling how difficult it must have been to be her. I empathize with that a lot, even if we don’t have the same vices. But at the same time, the style hits some sort of limit with me. I reacted the same way about a week ago when I got the Marty Robbins album. He understands the task completely — it’s the only cowboy album you’ll ever need. And he also adds a kind of Cold War menace that isn’t there with more nostalgic takes. I’d absolutely assign Marty Robbins to a class learning about American culture in 1959… and I’d assign Amy Winehouse to understand music in the 2010s. Do I ever want to pick it up now though? I’d be slightly more likely to listen to Amy than Marty, which is what makes this tough. I completely understand how it would be a 5 for someone, but for me it sits with the 4 albums that I greatly admire but don’t love until the end of time.

This is so good. It's impossible to say with artists like this if we could have the highs without the lows that we're built in to them from the start. Probably not, but man were we robbed of so much potential.

"Back to Black" is the second and final studio album by English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Soul, R&B, contemporary R&B, neo soul and pop are the Wiki-listed genres. The album lyrics are based on Winehouse's tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, who temporarily left her to pursue an ex-girlfriend with themes of guilt, grief, heartbreak and trauma in a relationship. Winehouse collaborated with producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson along with Sharon Jones' band, the Dap-Kings, to create the sound. Winehouse sang the vocals and played guitar. The album was recorded in NYC, Miami and London with nearly 50 people who contributed as musicians, singers, producers and/or arrangers. Commercially, the album hit #1 in the UK and #2 in the US and had wide-spread acclaim. In 2025, it was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its artistic significance. The album opens with "Rehab." Drum ticks and handclaps. Winehouse enters with her unique and soulful vocals. Horn fills, a piano and strings. 60's-ish backing vocals. A song about her refusal to enter an alcohol rehab center after a conversational with her father. Drum beats and a roll begin "You Know I'm No Good." And, in fact, I would say Homer Steinweiss' drums are the lead instrument. More horns and piano. A distinct mystery feel and Roger Moore is even mentioned. Amy cheating herself out of a healthy relationship. And the relationship situation flips in the self-titled "Back to Black" as Amy's experiences her boyfriend leaving her for another girl. Haunting piano keys and a plodding bass and drums. Strings eventually come in as the song gets louder to the end. Winehouse proves that she deliver in ballads as well. "Love Is a Losing Game." Drums lead to piano, strings and electric guitar. Amy realizes love can be destructive and addictive as well. Given that is 4/20 day, it is appropriate the album ends with "Addicted." Amy's boyfriend is stealing her weed so she starts to grow her own. A whimsical tone with a wobbly guitar and quite soulful. Horns and we get a flute. Winehouse has quite the unique and soulful voice. The lyrics can be deeply personnel but also quite clever and humorous. Lots of pop culture references. The music is retro harking back to the 50's, 60's and 70's backing vocals, soul and R&B with elements of reggae, jazz and ska. Great production and mixing by Remi and Ronson. Top notch musicianship. Amy Winehouse was a unique talent showcased on this album with music to match. An obvious strong recommendation.

I never really heard much of Amy Winehouse except for Rehab, yet I really enjoyed this album. She has an amazing voice and the music in this album was very good. I might even go as far as to say the Rehab is the song I liked the least on this album, although it could be due to the fact that I have heard it a lot. It definitely gives a 60s Motown sound, which is what she was going for, and I can appreciate when old music becomes new again.

Full Hits album!

I’m going to be honest and say that I did not expect to like this. I didn’t listen to Winehouse when she was alive and was at best ambivalent when she died. This album blew my socks off. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it’s an absolute shame that such a talent had her life taken by addiction.

This is a solid album! So many hits, and the ones that didn't chart are still really good. It's a shame we lost her too soon. (4)

I didn't really enjoy the previous Amy Winehouse album (frank) but this was great.

That was actually pretty nice to listen to

This album starts off with such an iconic song, but I don't know if the rest of the songs live up to the expectations... However, I would still give this a solid rating and give it a 4/5

She’s great. Her voice has depth. The songs feel genuine.

Amy had so much swag and charisma. A perfect blend of throwback and freshness. 4/5.

Mixed feelings here. On one hand, it's a positively beautiful record. It's sweet, it's nasty, it's soulful, the production is unimpeachable, and Winehouse's vocals are killer every time. It's everything you'd want in a genre like soul. But I have a hard time separating it from the fact that it's a white woman effectively colonizing a historically black style of music. I guess it depends on who you ask. Fans will say she's "paying homage" to her idols, while deriders will say she's a "ripoff" or a "hack." And she suffered those deriders for her entire adult life before she succumbed to her vices. She was exploited, harassed, stabbed in the back, and treated like a plaything. A month before her death, at her last performance, she was booed off the stage by her fans. I cannot imagine the mortifying humiliation she must have felt. But if I wanted to, I could just look at any of the pictures that people took of her at her lowest moments. You have to love her. You have to.

Fave songs - back to black, wake up alone

Amy Winehouse has such an iconic voice, and the 60s style backing here really suits it. I don't have any problem with the fact that she chose to do an "old" style - it's what she liked and she does it well. Not all "modern" music has to be completely homogeneous; it's was quite refreshing to listen to something with a saxophone as a primary backing instrument. Not sure I need a whole album of Amy in one hit, but I enjoyed this listen. I tried to pay closer attention to the tracks I knew, since they've always been fairly passive listens in the past, and I found them to be pretty deeply layered and interesting. I enjoyed the instrumentation and I enjoyed the vocals. Classic album that deserves a place on this list.

Powerful and gripping vocals with a great band. Excellent listening and vibe. Old school female vocals.

Really like this album. Consistently good throughout

Great album. One or two songs I didn't love otherwise it would be a 5 star

I have not heard much of Amy, but I know most of the songs in this album. Great pick!

Incredible vocals. She was truly the best of her time.

So good. I already knew some of the songs because they’re total bops, but as a whole it felt like a really complete album, super chill overall.

A genuinely refreshing update on classic sounds. The Dap-Kings are the glue, providing a complete sound and impeccable arrangements seemingly out of the box, though Ronson’s choice to mix the rhythm section like a hip hop record is largely responsible for how modern it all sounds. Both would be nothing without Amy’s fantastic songs, with their candid, black humor and very real pathos.

This is a great album, but it's hard to listen to b/c sad.

this one was the most popular so far, but nah for me. Sounds great, but ig if I will have an addicted obsessed era i will remember this Edit: fuck it got me

Brings me back to Christmas 2006. My mum got my Grandma this as a present and we played it all day. Quite timeless despite it being a throwback sounding album. There’s obviously some amazing tunes on here, I do think the deeper cuts are slightly weaker. But a great collection nonetheless. Such a shame we never got album 3.

So good. She has the perfect voice for the retro crooner style. Back to Black is a near perfect song IMO.

A heartbreaking album, her voice is so haunting and you can hear the anguish in it

A really interesting album for the times amidst pop punk, RnB, and early 2000s pop one of the best jazz singers crops up with this album, if your not into jazz music start with this album

Hermoso

Soul, Rock, 2006 -> 4

Love is a losing game is sooo real man, otra canción que me encanta! He can only hold her se parece mucho a las canciones del inicio. Mi canción favorita es Love is a losing game, seguida de Back to black.

The title track is fire brings back memories and so does rehab. It’s weird. I remember hearing this album a lot in the early 2000s growing up and then we all know she passed away too soon so far enjoyed it but only the main songs that made her popular. you know I’m no good is also a good playlist submission. along with back to Black. and love is a losing game it’s tragic. She died at 27. It leaves you wondering what could’ve been it’s not a perfect album but it’s pretty damn good.

Sensational singer, voice of a goddess. This album shines on her true talents. RIP

Es hermoso y agridulce

Properly rated, even though I don't listen to it as often as I should. 7/10

why didn't anyone tell me about this masterpiece before 5/5

classic

In 2006, I went on a trip to London with a couple of friends. We were heading over to see The Flaming Lips play the Hammersmith Apollo, and stayed a few extra nights for the craic. On our first day, we did a bit of day-drinking in a bar in Soho. Amy Winehouse’s song “Rehab” was playing in the background. I’d never heard anything like it before. It properly stopped us in our tracks. Cut to a couple of hours later, two of us were singing “They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said NO NO NO” at the top of our lungs as we walked through the streets of Soho, much to the embarrassment of the third. Sure, alcohol was a factor, but the song was so unique and catchy that we couldn’t resist. We happened upon a cultural moment in London. There was a real scene developing, mostly around the Camden area, but it had spread across the rest of central London too. People wore messy hairdos that somehow defied gravity, with very skinny jeans, black eye makeup (regardless of gender), and did lots of drugs openly. There was a real cool vibe and energy to the bar, club and music scene that made it feel like being in the middle of an artistic movement right as it was happening. Amy Winehouse was a key figure of this scene. She became a proper cultural icon. Her look was a big part of that: the bouffant hairdo, the big black wings of her eye makeup, the tattoos, the dresses. She looked like a punk rocker who had time-travelled back to the 60s to be a singer in The Ronnettes. Her voice was the other big factor too, obviously: coming from a background as a jazz singer, her voice was insanely strong, and at a time when it wasn’t common, she sounded like a modern incarnation of Billie Holiday. And then when you heard her speak in interviews, she sounded like a London cabbie. Proper London gal, innit? Her attitude and humour was the other big factor. The juxtaposition between her singing voice and her speaking voice was one thing, but it was her personality that got her all of the (mostly unwanted) attention from the media. She had a good deal of punk rock attitude, with some great comedic instincts, and was a breath of fresh air among the phoniness of pop music of the time. Basically, she seemed very genuine and sound. “Back to Black” was very different to anything else that was around at the time. The Motown, neo-soul, 60s vibe to the songs coupled with the edginess of her lyrics (using words like “fuckery”) felt very fresh. A large part of that was down to Mark Ronson. Don’t get me wrong, these songs were Amy’s, but Mark Ronson was instrumental in bringing the absolute best out of her. The two came together at exactly the right time, and struck gold. The musicianship of The Dap-Kings and Ronson’s production instincts matched perfectly with Amy’s vision and songwriting. The album wouldn’t have worked nearly as well without that collaboration. While it’s not a perfect album, there’s a serious amount of fantastic songs on this album. “You Know I’m No Good”, “Love Is A Losing Game” and “Tears Dry On Their Own” have stood the test of time, and are proper classics. “Back to Black”, the title song, really shines: that staccato piano line, Amy’s gritty lyrics about depressive states and the vocal melody in the chorus is just fantastic. And of course there’s “Rehab”, the song that introduced me to her in the first place. There’s a reason it struck us in that pub in London. The idea of dealing with a taboo subject, like rejecting an intervention, with upbeat doo-wop is something that nobody would have expected to be a huge hit. It’s such a unique concept, executed to perfection, and one of those all-time great songs. So good that it can cause two-thirds of your friend group to break out into song in the middle of a crowded London street, while the other third pretends they’re not with you. 4.5 stars.

So many good songs in one album Taken too soon, RIP Amy

The songwriting carries it. Even when it feels familiar stylistically, the voice and perspective keep it grounded and personal.

the 1960s in a 2000s pop album. shame that listening now feels so bittersweet. also a shame that "she probably should've gone to rehab" is such low-hanging fruit where jokes are concerned, because admittedly it would've been cool to see her sound evolve if she'd made it into her 30s. out of respect to amy winehouse i will not say that i hate british people today.

My mom used to blast this in the car when I was a wee lad and I think that increases my score for Ms. Whinehouse and I still come back to it fairly regularly for that reason alone. Nostalgia is one hell of a drug. rip amy you would've loved The Masked Singer

We listened to Amy Winehouse’s debut, Frank, a while back and I, to be blunt, hated the fucking shit out of it because I felt like it was trying to be current and, as a result, sounded immediately dated (and also the songs caused some fucked up time dilation thing where they claimed to be 3 minutes long whilst lasting multiple hours. I was surprised by my distaste for Frank because I remembered enjoying Back to Black. I just kinda assumed I was misremembering or maybe my taste had changed but, no, this album is quite good and the other one is just not for me. What’s fun to contrast is how leaning into the retro sound makes Back to Black sound less dated than Frank’s “modern” 2003 ass production.

Surprised myself by enjoying this !

Pretty strong album overall - fizzles out towards but first 2/3 you can’t skip.

Heard a lot about Amy Winehouse but never listened to an album. Let’s see if she lives up to the hype or if it’s a died young situation. Rehab is a banger. A goat pop song. You know I’m no good is another banger. Love that background track. Vocals are unique but in a great way. Me and Mr jones is pretty good. Again I like the horns a lot. Not as catchy. Just friends is meh. Nothing special abt it. Just a normal pop song. Back to black is another banger. Good harmonies, great vocals. Good piano too. Love is a losing game is pretty good. Super emotional. Bad time for that (rip king). I like tears dry on their own better. I also like the contrast between this one and the last. This album has a theme. Wake up alone is very well written. Another one that fits well in regards to the theme of the whole album. Some unholy war is just ok. Another one that is just kind of a generic pop song. Production on he can only hold is so good. Great vocals as always too. This song is really fun. Really cool horn solo. I love how it ends with addicted. Full circle after starting with rehab. In hindsight I was always going to like this album, I love Adele and Amy is as close to Adele as you can get. I was not expecting such a well put together album with a true theme. It’s emotional and fun all at the same time. I was honestly blown away. 4.1 stars.

Pretty interesting, actually. I didn't listen to her when she was active, so this came as a bit of a surprise. I really like the 60s girl band vibe, and I think the rough edge she puts on it really makes this work.

First album I own. And a classic 4 stars

This was way better than i thought it would be.

Quite poignant how short/punchy this album is. Leaves you wanting more.

Great!

Big amy winehouse fan. Back to black is a classic. Rip Amy Winehouse you were masterful.

8.5/10 - What kind of Fuckery is this?

I like this album a lot more than Frank. No bad songs on this and it's banger after banger. 8/10

i like to dance to this

I used to know someone who bought this album when it came out and listened to it constantly on repeat. I just didn’t get it then. I thought her songs were overplayed on the radio, and that made me not like her music. But… listening to this now, with an open mind, I can see how talented she was as a singer and songwriter. Coupled with some very good production, this is a very good album. Still not one that I will necessarily listen to again for a while, but I don’t hate it. And that’s saying something. This gets four out of five. I didn’t think I would score it that high. It’s a good record, and I can appreciate that. Standout track - Tears Dry On Their Own

I didn't know much about her, outside the tragedy and the hits, and was pleasantly surprised by the album. I understand why she was so beloved.

8/10 Best songs: Back to Black It's crazy that I listened to her debut album the other day and got this one today - what are the odds? This time around she certainly grew into her voice, and it's an interesting experience hearing these ultra-modern lyrics paired with Motown/60s-influenced music. Overall it's worlds better than her debut. I do find that at various points she loses herself in the aesthetic styling of her voice, which results in a loss of enunciation, and thd mixing is occasionally entirely off (seriously, in several of the songs I can barely understand her due to both of these reasons). Frankly, I've never particularly enjoyed her music, and I have always found her celebrity inextricably tied to her tragic life which I find rather reprehensible, but this album is better than I expected.

another day another banger 4/5

I have not listened to this album before. I was expecting to give it a "yeah, it was significant" three but was really engaged by it. I usually listen to my assigned albums twice through but even after a third listen I thought that i would continue to appreciate this album even more after additional listens.

I know some think this is a nostalgia-fest and disingenuously borrows from the past (motown etc) but I liked it. Great voice and some absolute bangers

It’s not really my kind of music, but I ca appreciate the quality.

150/1001 This is much like Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Half of it is amazing singles and the other half I don’t ever need to hear again. I like half of Thriller about half as much as half of Back to black though. 7/10

The backing musicians were worth an extra star. Otherwise, 3 stars.

Haven't listened to it fully before. The songs are so cool, the vibe is there with q great composition, and style which was rare for the times to be popular. A testament to her talent and so many more things she could've given to the world.

Such a big leap forward from Frank, songs much more interesting and feels more assured, sad we didn't get more from her

Stücke wie „Rehab“, „You Know I’m No Good“, „Back to Black“ und „Tears Dry on Their Own“ zeigen die Mischung aus persönlicher Textführung und klassisch orientierter Produktion besonders deutlich. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Musikern der Dap-Kings trägt zusätzlich zu diesem stilistischen Bezug bei. Das Album wirkt in seiner Gestaltung geschlossen und konzentriert. Die Verbindung aus persönlicher Erzählweise, traditioneller Soul-Ästhetik und moderner Popproduktion macht Back To Black zu einem prägenden Werk der 2000er-Jahre.

Great pairing of performer and producer.

This is a fantastic album. RIP Amy.

Back to Black veroorzaakt (Back to Basics/Back to Black > toeval? kinda sus).

the title tells us what winehouse is doing. she gives us a nigh perfect take on old r&b, funk, reggae, and soul. this is just stunningly good. it’s too bad that the autobiographical nature of the album was too much for her

Other than ‘Rehab’, this was all a new listen for me (I was a high school junior when this was released, British soul singers weren’t exactly making the cut on my iPod). This album was a total throwback to like 1960s Motown-style music, in a good way! Ms. Winehouse has a tremendous voice and there’s a ton of emotion on display in the songs. I particularly enjoyed the title track and ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’. The last two or three songs were a bit tedious and forgettable, but this was still a very good album, a solid 4/5.

Never looked past Rehab on this album and I’m sad that I did that, but we back and it’s a banger

a modern classic.

Enjoyed this a lot. Not just the hits.

Super talented artist. Shame this was her last album.

4.5⭐️/5 03.02.2026

Very talented.

Favorite track(s): Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, Tears Dry on Their Own

Amazing.

This is some fantastic throwback R&B/soul. Everything is a winner here. Only thing for me is, this feels more like music that has it's time and place for me, not something I can just throw on any time. Still fantastic though.

I wanted this to be 5 stars...but it is not. It's more between 3 and 4, but I must award 4 stars because I found two songs to be really great. As for the rest, they are indeed good songs, but I just find they are not very innovative. I guess that's part of the whole concept, but I felt the music lacked personality or uniqueness. In any case, a good album with no bad songs.

she's got a vibe Will I listen to again: 60%

3 estrellas

Great record. Reminiscent of the old 60s Specter sound, but fresh too.

Der typische Sound. "Back to black" und "Rehab" kennt wohl jeder. 4/5

“What kind of fuckery is this?” I always find something new to enjoy when I listen to Back to Black.

Not a fan of her voice nor the lyrics, but the album is well produced and succeeds in bringing back a long-lost epoch, even if it is not your cup of tea. 7/10

There are no skippable songs on the album. Every song hooks you in immediately with a classic blues/jazz or even reggae rhythm followed by a fantastic vocal performance. The songs are unsubtle when talking about addiction, depression and abuse. Amy puts everything out there. Definitely should have gone to rehab.

Her vocals pair well with the horns, distinctive percussion at the low BPM and fun unique instruments for various songs. Creates that old school sound like an underground jazz club shrouded in dim lights.

Still sounds as fresh as when it burst onto the scene. Tragic she didn't live long enough to make more like it.

Great voice, cool mix of retro/modern soul.

Not too bad. Fairly enjoyable.

Silky backing with silkier vocals. Prime length

Not my usual style but can’t deny how good she is!

Respect to old Motown vibes! I have listened this album several times but not for many years. Still sounds as I remember. Great album but doesn't bring anything new to table.

I used to listen the heck out of this album. I burned a CD-R for car use, it was one of the few pieces of music my ex-wife would listen to without whining, along with Duffy's Rockferry. I like most of the album songs, some of it turned out to be a bit iffy as far as her decisions in life go. There are a few songs I don't like as much, for instance that one with kinda crappy reggae vibes, but overall a great album!

What a talent. A big departure from her excellent debut (which I may still prefer), but love the nostalgic sound and of course her voice
