Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Another album that I was familiar with but had never listened to fully. It did not disappoint. The songs I was already familiar with sounded great in context, Tears dry on their own being a real highlight, and the rest of the tracks were good as well. Overall though the album tracks never did top the singles so it didn't blow me away, still a good listen so I'll give it a 4.
I was a bit of a contrarian prick when this record came out and didn’t deem it worthy of a second listen. I was completely wrong and I’m glad this got generated for me to give a second chance.
8.5 / 10
- very groovy and Jazzy - Incredible Voice and instrumentals - upbeat and bouncy songs are incredibly catchy - weird dissonance between subject of the lyrics and instrumentals, probably very intentional - the slower songs ( me & mr jones, love is a losing game) are “carried” by/ focus on her incredible voice - comes together as an interesting painting of a troubled and passionate life. - it has a cynicism to it that is mostly enhanced by the irony of the contrasts between bouncy jazz tunes and lyrics about addiction and a life that is falling apart (best seen in rehab, which carries itself with the defiance of a misunderstood and headstrong person that won’t change her ways) - gives the album a tragic sense of self awareness in hindsight
An iconic album with fantastic songs!! The type of songs you can't help but sing along to.
I don't know that i've listened to this entire album before. It was great.
I am very conflicted on my thoughts on this one. On one hand its easily enjoyable, singable, and performed with a soulful voice and a brass section rarely appearing in 'pop' songs like this. On the other hand, I can't help but feel a more raw production, perhaps more depth to the instrumentation, would being this album more in line with old soul records. Regardless, the lyrics, though rather exoteric, remain incredibly memorable and fully explore Amy Winehouse vices and life at this stage. Its actually shocking at times how vulnerable and exposing she is about her experiences. I'm rating this album as a 4 - accounting for my personal enjoyment and that despite its polished production it is peerless for its time of release, though i could see it argued as a 3
Her voice with the jazzy pop beat made her who she is. Nice!
Probably the best of what pop can do in the modern age: smooth vocals and pleasant orchestration.
Damn she bad! This albums pretty good and I love her vocals. The bass is addictive in this album and works great! Peak music fr.
I completely ignored Amy Winehouse when she was alive but came to appreciate her talent later. Love the title track but the rest of the album is not quite a 5.
Very well produced, well made R&B. I think part of this album’s legacy is due to Winehouse’s premature passing, but it’s still a very solid album in it’s own right.
Banger
I didn't realise how much I knew of this album, but I was singing along to almost every song. There's so much life in these songs, but also so much sadness and self-deprecation. Her voice is unmatched, and the arrangement of the songs is brilliant. Very close to being a 5 star for me!
I was expecting more? Great voice but something in the mix/production was just off to me. Instrumentally was just boring. Mid 3
took me back! I enjoyed listening to it
When you listen to this album, it makes you remember how much of a trailblazer Amy Winehouse was for female artists. She totally broke the mold about what a female pop artist should sound like and the type of music they should make. I always felt like Amy Winehouse was one of those people you would describe as an "old soul", and this album perfectly depicts that. She did her own thing and she did it beautifully!
I knew the singles but not the album, the track Back to Black is just killer, but I enjoyed the whole thing. 4 stars.
aguante amy
3.7 never really listened to Amy Winehouse, but she aaaight
after to listening to a lot of 60's soul which helped inspire her, man she did really well on this album.
Fantastic debut, with Amy’s soulful voice shining through and well produced horns and backing. A couple of bangers, including ‘Rehab’ and ‘Back To Black’, with ‘Love Is A Losing Game’ another highlight, if very sad. 2nd half of the record not quite as stellar as the first, which holds it back from 5 stars.
Wow, this was great! Based on the reviewers, it sounds like I’ve just been living under a rock, but I signed up for this challenge to expose myself to new artists like this. Beautiful stuff
It was a great listen!
Ive had her first record before and both of them are equally great. Its still wild that this type of music was popular in the club banger era of music. Probably different demos but still. To have akon and Amy doing their things at the same time is still insane. Its sad that this is it. And she definitely should have gone to rehab but its still a great song. A bit sadder but still great. The title track is great too. Also me and mr Jones is a standout too. Hearing the word fuckery with these instrumentals is funny. Its just a good record with great vocals and a fun style that would have maybe only gotten better.
Good overall, although not my usually liked stuff. I can appreciate
Decent 4
No no no
I am bias because I already loved this album, and I do so even more now.
This is a cracking album. It's shame Winehouse's career was cut so terribly short. A terrific voice, great lyrics.
Great voice and the retro style is really interesting. Not afraid of dark subject matter
One of my favorite voices of the last 30 years. This album in particular has so much of what I love about soul music. It's not perfect, but neither was she.
Idk why but I thought she was from the 60s? She’s got an amazing voice that carries so much soul.
Music is a 3. Amy’s voice is a 5 (minimum). Took the avg: 4
A classic for sure but more skips that didn’t resonate with me than I remembered. An all time voice and presence gone far too soon. I still like Frank better.
I remember being really high but having to watch Amy Winehouse sing “Rehab” on one of the late night shows with my parents because our friend Ian was playing in the band. Couldn’t really figure out what to make of it at the time.
🖤
Great songs, hell of a voice, TERRIBLE mastering. The drums are downright deep fried.
Yes
What a legendary and fantastically produced album. Depressingly hard to listen to considering lyrics about the substance abuse that lead to her death. But wow; so tight Mark Ronson production, especially the drums. Though I’ve never listened to this album front to back, its popularity made this a nostalgia trip into the past, partly because many of the songs I’ve heard many times before, and partly because vocals and songwriting style have clearly inspired so many artists after her. A piece of cultural bedrock.
A classic, paired back arrangement and beautiful voice
Listened before
What a quick yet impactful 30 minutes with a really a unique sound that sounds so similar to what the 60’s sounded. Amy just gives a powerful independent perspective about herself and her music I just can’t help but feel bliss and optimistic when listening to it all.
• Rehab is a great opening track for this album. We studied this song in class as an example of how to write horn accompaniments, and it's easy to see why. This song is Amy Winehouse's sound in a nutshell, and it's a sound nobody else in modern music has really come close to replicating. • Back to Black is also iconic for very good reason. • Tears Dry On Their Own makes good use of the Ain't No Mountain backing track. It's uncommon for me to listen to a song sampling a very famous track and not feel like it's just a worse version of the original (see: Anxiety, I'm Good), but this song somehow avoids that. Amy Winehouse was one of the more unique voices of the 2000's, and her talent really couldn't be overstated. There's a reason her music still resonates with people today. There were a few songs that didn't quite grab my attention, but the songs that did were all great. The singles in particular were all fantastic, and her most popular songs definitely earned their popularity. Favourite song: Rehab
:)
Iconic album! Set the tone for a particular retro sound for the new generation
Love how frank she talks about addiction long before it was normalized
Definitely a fantastic pop album. Nearly every song on here is just solid pop glory.
My rating 4.2 Fabulous album. Love the nostalgia sounds alone side the cutting lyrics. Just Great.
really solid and cohesive album. I was surprised at how many songs I actually knew! love how much bari was in there
One of the best pop albums of the 21st century. So many bangers. Favorite track: Back To Black
The last time I saw her perform was at the V Festival in 2008, and in 2025 I stood in Camden and saw her statue. Knowing there will never be another chance to hear that voice live makes the album feel heavy in a way that goes beyond music. Listening to this album now simply makes me feel sad — sad that such a voice is gone, and that all we have left are the recordings.
I'd heard OF Amy Winehouse, I'd not heard Amy Winehouse. I was not prepared for this to be this good. Fuck yeah. Four stars.
Peel away all of the substance abuse and mental health issues. Peel away all of the hospitalizations and legal troubles. They're all part of a larger tragedy about how we lose great great artists way too soon. Remove all of that and you still have this amazing phenomenal voice that is still mesmerizing.
Initially I was thinking 5, but then some songs dragged. Then some Jamaican rhythms kicked in, which is always a plus. In the end, I dig her voice, and most of her music.
So much better than the other Amy winehouse on this list. It’s got a much more serious approach than essentially being an hour of “fuck my man I hate him so much.” You can see how much she matured, makes it all the more tragic
I love this album, but I was 13 when it came out and it was one of the only albums I owned, so I am biased.
me encanta este álbume!!! grande amy te extrañamos
2/3. Really great album, I'd heard it before but it was nice to come back to. Great voice, love the production, and the running theme of love and hate and addiction and the blurred lines between them plays out beautifully in the lyrics.
Rehab - 4.5/5 You Know I'm No Good - 4/5 Me & Mr. Jones - 4/5 Just Friends - 3/5 Back to Black - 4.5/5 Love is a Losing Game - 3/5 Tears Dry on Their Own - 4/5 Wake Up Alone - 3.5/5 Some Unholy War - 3/5 He Can Only Hold Her - 3.5/5 Addicted - 3.5/5 A tragic and melancholic piece hidden behind a devil-may-care and soulful attitude. Winehouse has a unique voice that sets this album apart from its contemporaries and will keep it being listenable in the future. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Rehab, Back to Black, Tears Dry on their Own
This is such a great album with some really good songs that are poignant and sung by someone with an incredible voice. lots of notable songs and an album I would happily listen to time and time again. I already own this. this album holds out with love is a losing game on its own, which is the standout track. 4.5 Stars
The only thing that I knew of Amy Winehouse was that she died of alcohol poisoning. That being said, I really enjoyed this album, and thought it was fun with a throwback vibe. It gets four stars.
A classic album tainted now by Amy’s personal life. The album barks back to 1960s soul with the production skills of Mark Ronson. The album is littered with fantastic songs, great playing, great singing, brilliant lyrics and fantastic production.
Although I knew every song it was interesting to listen afresh after a while away. I think she has a great voice although she sometimes comes across as mimicking. There are some fab tunes on here but again, so maudlin that I can only take it in small doses. Also the themes are slightly wearing but it hit today.
Great album, cohesive. The latter half is much better than the first half. Favs: love is a losing game & addicted
I am honestly surprised by Winehouse's sound. I admit I never listened to her music though I heard so much about her. She sang with the sounds of old souls (Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra) and I absolutely love her music. Will definitely return to this album and explore her other offerings.
All this time I thought Amy Winehouse was "just" a popstar and meanwhile she was making blues and soul music… Is it pastiche? Of course. It is also pretty damn good all the same.
i don't listen to her in my spare time but i can't deny the impact of this. i'd heard the majority of the songs before many times which speaks to how iconic it is
Love you Amy rest in peace sweet girl
😍🤩
Wow I love this…I’ve never listened to her before, nor do I know much about her, but from what I do know, this album is actually very sad. Behind the very jazzy energetic instrumentals there’s very real and raw lyrics telling her story & the struggles she was facing.
Pretty good love her voice
I mean, there's a reason this is one of the best selling albums of all time. I do wonder sometimes how her legacy would have been affected by music after this. I think ending on a high note can have a really different impact on the world than ending on a low, and I think it'd be interesting to see how things would've panned out if she had gotten clean or broken apart from her father or something. Favorites: Rehab, Back to Black, Some Unholy War
what a smooth ass album. great melodies and chord progressions. amy's voice is electric. I've never listened to a full album from Amy before but I know her hits. the vibe of this album is great. really great percussion in her songs as well. i like this!
so like... this is what every single pop girly from the late 2000's and 2010's was ripping off, and it DEF deserves all the accolades, with the lovely jazzy stuff to it and just the brilliant vocals, such a cool album for sure
No doubt about the significance of this album, just a high-quality pop record that really matches the era of Motown artists, but highlighting modern issues and scenarios. Compared to her other album, she really found her groove and props to her for that. Undoubtedly one of the most recognisable vocals in music.
This is wonderful. Her range in the middle made for easy listening.
8,8/10
Took me three listens to enjoy it to its full potential. This one you need to listen in silence to really get it.
One of my all time favs
Smokey jazz.club.
Solid album
good album
First time fully listening to this album which is long overdue. Extraordinary voice, love the jazzy music, iconic, love and addiction. I listen to it twice and it’s a vibe I could relate with some lyrics as well. Favourite is probably „love is a losing game“ and „Addicted“ (ofc back to black and rehab as well, famous for a reason)
I need to listen to diss
Insanely influential for singers like Adele. It's crazy how much of a distinctive style she has on this album. You'd obviously recognize her voice anywhere, but also the instrumentation (drums & trumpets), and her raw and unfiltered writing style, singing about drugs, alcoholism, her goo-for-nothing ex relationship she can't let go off. Obviously very influenced by Black soul singers. Had no idea Amy and Nas crossed paths, worked together and more?? Back to Black is one of the most recognizable 00s tracks, goes so fucking hard with that beat and the instruments
Have listened to before, great songs popular for a reason!
Didn't really care for Rehab when it was big, but this album is really much more than the single. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
Most enjoyable songs --------- Rehab You know I'm no good Back to black Love is a loosing game --------
Not my favorite
I wanted to like this album less but its really good, as long as you skip rehab (overplayed).
Brilliant album only marred by some song lyrics feeling very uncomfortable, particularly with the hindsight of 20 years and a few documentaries.
Beautiful and smoky. What a loss.
I mean its iconic, absolutely timeless
Love it!
Great album. Too pop y for me
- tämä on kyllä solidi platta, voisi jopa sanoa että no skip levy
1. Wake Up Alone 2. Tears Dry On Their Own 3. Love Is a Losing Game I love this album a lot. I like the instrumentals and the mix of slow/fast songs. Some are really music oriented and others are more mainstream pop but they all work well together. I have given it 4 mostly because this is not my favourite Amy album, I prefer Frank. But, i would have given it 4.5 if I could because it’s not missing much. I like the talking/singing style of some Frank songs and more emphasis on the instrumentals which is not on this album as much. (Frank also has an intro/outro which I love).
She gets clowned so bad, maybe deservedly so, but this is good music with “voice of a generation” level vocals. I enjoyed this way more than I expected to!
4/5. What a legend
We miss you mama. Such soul in that voice, such sorrow in those words.
Unbelievably talented. What could have been
Masterpiece, sad she's gone.
Would be 5 if Rehab wasn't here. Vibed with the rest. Three songs added to my favorites.
actually so good
I enjoyed this album very much. It bounced between making me want to dance and making me want to cry. I really enjoyed the contrasting feelings it gave me. 4/5
I listened to a couple of songs from this album for a while. Gets into specific mood
Another one gone too soon. I think her voice above anyone else sounds so effortless and gentle. Beautiful writing, unique style, and iconic voice. Really really enjoyed this
Day719 - i knew more songs than i thought i would. i’m kinda ambivalent to amy winehouse but i understand what a talent she was and she’s gone too soon
got this cd when i was younger & have always loved this album!
Just an incredibly unique style [for the time] with a truly captivating voice.
A strong untimely exit album from a great singer. A reminder of what could have been. 4.5/5
Great album and credit to Amy for doing something so different. Love seeing music break the “pop” mold and still find success. Tragic story. 4
While I like the big hits on this album, I've never quite got the hype for Amy Winehouse's music. Listening through Back to Black though, I think I get it now. The songs are produced so well, her voice is stellar (and I especially love it on Love is a Losing Game), and it's got some really nice songwriting. The sax throughout is really fun too!
Love her voice, too much random reggae
It was a good album to start, at the end makes me feel kind of sad.
Gewoon een lekker bangertje van een album.
Pleasant surprise here. Knew some tracks but it is a very enjoyable album front to back
The listener is teleported to a jazz club of days gone by. Songs with no reservation are sung and many in the audience can relate to the surprising realism of relationship and substance abuse troubles. At least that's what happened to me when I listened to this album. Winehouse's voice is thick and powerful. The musicians backing her up stay subtly behind her, but I was pleased at how the trumpets made themselves known. I specifically enjoyed "He Can Only Hold Her". I believe this track really allowed everyone who worked on this album to have some fun. 4 stars
I knew of the album beforehand, and I've heard both "Back To Black" and "Me & Mr Jones". Still, I didn't know what to expect coming into this album. "Rehab", the opening track, really threw me off since it's not really my type of music. However, by the end of the album I was much more into it. It is clear to me why this album is so praised and well known. Notable favorites: Back To Black, Love Is A Losing Game, Wake Up Alone, You Know I'm No Good. I think this is the kind of album that would take more than one listen to grow on me, and I could see myself coming back to it.
Happy to have an R&B album not be 75 minutes! Never listened to Amy. She has a great, powerful voice. The backing instruments were great as well and worked nicely together with her voice to create a very complete album. High 3, low 4 territory. Giving it da bump cause I'd listen to this one again.
Probably going to repeat my last review of her other album but I don't feel like going back and looking. One of the most unique singing voices there was and she just sings so powerfully. Love the change up of the genres through the album. Back to Black the song is a classic. Many jams all throughout. Not quite a 5 but a very high 4
I have never listened to Amy Winehouse other than hearing snippets of "Rehab" over the years - this is a really neat record and of course has become larger-than-life with her tragic early death. This is a super cool retro album, great production and she really did have a great voice. Lyrics are really honest but still powerful and sad. I was blown away by everything that happened in 35 minutes.
Loved it. Some classics and a few that you have forgotten about.
What a good album. Never really had a chance to sit with this album, but Amy's voice and Mark Ronson's production are so, so good. I would have loved to see what she could have become if she had hung on, but what a gift she left. 8/10.
Really liked this! She has a great voice.
Legendary singer.
Nice to listen to. Slightly feminist vibe. 60s nostalgia with 2000s pop. RIP
He Can Only Hold Her goes crazyyyy. Really enjoyed Just Friends and Love is a Losing Game as well.
As a person who doesn’t listen to a lot of soul this album has definitely got me intrigued to explore the genre. An unbelievably groovy listen with some personal lyrics that keep you very intrigued. I’d rate a solid 8.5/10
Really good.
I already had a couple of songs from this album saved so I kind of knew what I was going in to before listening but it exceeded what I thought it was going to be. Amazing, miss her.
Commanding soulfulness - she tells a story w every song that sucks you in
Just as good as her debut, if not a little better
A bop.
Loveeeeee 🖤
I never been a big fan but i think she really proves that the 50s-60s sound still works in a more modern era and still can sound fresh and new. Was a bit dissapointed about track back to black because i remember this album from when it came out but i only remember Rehab. All and all, she is a great singer and this is a great produced album that sounds old and new at the same time. Not exactly my style and might not hear this album again but a 4 it is worth just from the quality and historical importance for the 00s
I like it. Amy's voice is so unique and this is an easy album to have on in the background. I recognized more songs than I thought I would just from general public exposure, highlighting the impact that this album had.
For anyone who compares Lana del Rey to Amy.. that’s an insult. Miss winehouse is raw and full or her own truth. Jazzy, bluesy, rock and roll, and offensive but keeps all ears listening.
Great voice, amazing arrangements, it was very good overall. My only complaint, some of the songs were a bit boring after a while, there was no variation.
I’ve already heard this record few times and I’m still amazed! Amy Whinehouse’s vocals are from parallel universe. Old style lines mixed with modern beats create unique artwork which remains in my collection. RIP Amy🙏🏻
It’s Amy Winehouse, major contributor to why the ‘10s indie sounded like that and tangentially breathed new life into the retro rockabilly aesthetic. All with good reason this album was amazing
Captures that Motown-style soul, but modern musical influences, confessional lyrics and real emotion prevent this from being merely a throwback.
You Know I’m No Good is really fun to play on guitar! Very complex for a modern album. A lot of the melodies sound old, like they should’ve been written years ago—they sound like something everyone knows and starts randomly humming. Sad she died :( Favorite songs are Rehab, You Know I’m No Good, and Back to Black. I liked it even more than I did the last time I listened. Just Friends is a pretty good song but it does feel a tad bit like filler, even if it is still amazing. Tears Dry On Their Own definitely inspired Olivia Rodrigo. Feels timeless. The songs are relatively short but still give themself time to develop as if they’re eight minute songs. Is the album cover supposed to be like a school chalkboard? It looks cool but I’m confused. Great album sequencing. Both the beginning and ending were perfect. Beautiful vocals. Sax is cool.
Such a talented singer and artist. One of those that could had an extended and varied career (a la Lady Gaga) but was cut short due to drugs like so many tortured artists before her. She has a beautiful and powerful voice and produced some wonderful music, especially on this album. Each song showcases her as the primary focus, and everything behind her compliments her well. This album is not a particular style that I gravitate toward naturally, but I'm happy to listen to it on occasion.
She can sing! Really enjoyed “Love is a Lpsong Game” and “Tears Dry on Their Own” in addition to the famed title track… and “You Know I’m No Good”… and “Rehab.” It was good, I thought it wasn’t fully my style but I get Amy Winehouse now. Apparently T likes her.
really solid album. i just don't understand why some people on here think it's such a crime to take inspiration from an older style of music. it's not "nostalgia baiting", it's putting your own spin on something, being creative, which is what music and art as a whole are all about
7/10
Great songs. I love the homage to Motown and Soul greats in the production. Very Spector on places, Tears Dry On Their Own is the standout for me, reminds me of You're All I Need To Get By - Marvin Gaye. Ronson's production is everso slightly overegged. That's the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars. I think the production on Frank coupled with Amy's charm, vicious songwriting and unique voice, makes that the better album.
This album is so good, Amy's voice is great, shame that the people around her couldn't take care of the rise of fame. 4/5 Anecdote: The first time I saw/heard Amy was in MTV Los 10+ Pedidos (think of TRL for latam), the song was rehab and while I understood a tiny bit, the chorus was just blatant shout for help, the desperation in the third verses "I don't ever wanna drink again I just, ooh, I just need a friend" it feels like daggers when I think too much of the aftermath of the release of this album.
liked it
Such a soulful voice with excellent production, masking some average songs . A great album but not quite amazing The main songs are all incredible but the rest are just okay Here voice hides the fact that this is a little More Bublé than I remember . Cruise singer in places
Quand même très sympathique.
4+ Stars (12/15)
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this album. Tears Dry On Their Own is my pick of the lot.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. Sad to say a great talent gone.
I loved this album at the time. Does it hold up? Amy sounds fab. Love the Mark Ronson production. I must’ve been going through something at the time, but it doesn’t hit the same way. Still giving it a 4/5
3.8 Rehab, Back to Black, and the last song I digged. I get what she was doing alot more now being older. R.I.P bby.
One of the best pop albums of all time?
He Can Only Hold Her For So Long 1001 Albums Generator 169 (11/25/2025) Great pop soul revival and fun production is weighed down by a few bad and/or forgettable tunes. The classics are classic for a reason though. 3.5/5 rounded up to 4. Favs: You Know I’m No Good Back To Black He Can Only Hold Her Least Fav: Just Friends
This album was great. Although not my ideal genre, Winehouse's vocals are undeniably splendid and powerful. It may well deserve a full 5 but falls short in originality in this listener's opinion.
This is the final album from this British artist, as she died at 27. The music is very 1960s, while the lyrics are very 21st century. The singing is good. I wonder whether “Me & Mr. Jones” is somehow connected to “Me & Mrs. Jones” from 1972. The beginning and end of the album were better than the middle, but overall above average,
[tony vlachos voice]: this is huge; I needed this. Pleased to announce that I Have This Album (#6). I haven't listened to 'Rehab' since 2011 because I find it too upsetting, but 'Back to Black' (the song) is one of the greats. Amy has a strong jazzy voice that would be skilled-but-boring to me if the songs weren't zippy, but they (mostly) are, and that's why this album is a winner. Good job, list. Kind of surprising to see the lyric "What kind of fuckery is this" in 2006, because it seems more modern than that (at least among whiteos). More validation for my "2006 was like, three years ago" mindset. Highlights: 'Back to Black', 'Tears Dry on Their Own', 'Addicted'
Great album!
I lost my notes for this one. Suffice it to say that I'm still amazed that this voice came from this frame / singer. Soulful and tortured — so gut-wrenching that we lost her gift so soon after receiving it.
What a big leap forward this was from Frank, her debut! “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” and “You Know I’m Good” are essential. So, so good. P.S. My heart always skips a beat when I get to the part of “You Know I’m Good” that rhymes “today” with “Tanqueray.”
Tragic story, amazing singer, loved the simple production and retro style
She did save all the great songs for this album, but the first half is so much better than the second so I can’t give five stars. Could have been balanced better
Love this one!!! have not listened in a bit but enjoyed! #musicsky #albumsky
Rehab is great, of course. The rest is decently groovy, as well. :-) 3,9/5
i liked this one better than frank…maybe that’s because i was previously familiar with more of the songs (a bad metric, i realize…) but i just had a better time listening to this overall. fav tracks: you know i’m no good; me & mr jones; back to black; tears dry on their own
So enjoyable of course, but this is still not up there with Frank for me. I think her adoption of Motown-era R&B influences made this album more commercially and universally appealing to people but doesn’t have as much variation or experimentation as her debut. However, I don’t think the album suffers too much from this because of how short it is. There’s also something fun about hearing contemporary lyrics superimposed onto a classic mid-century sound; “What kind of fuckery is this, you made me miss the Slick Rick gig” over a doo wop track in “Me & Mr. Jones” is pretty iconic. It’s a fun listen chock full of solid bangers and honest lyrics even if not the most inventive sonically. Fav tracks: You Know I’m No Good, Love is a Losing Game
closer to 4.5
Great album
Those first 2 songs are killer. Wish she could have stuck around.
the first album on the list that I have on vinyl. Was awesome spinning a record for the 1001 project. This is a great album. Rehab was a smash hit, but I think it actually is a weaker part of the album. While it's well sung, and fun, it comes off as a throw-away tongue-in-cheek pop song. the rest of the album is flawless. "Tears Dry on their Own" also brings in the pop influence but does so more subtlety than "Rehab", and for that I think it's the best song on the album.
It was a sudden transformation yet it was appropriate all the same. Amy Winehouse had always thumbed through the happenings of her life and the particular happenings at this portion of her life was more than enough to structure the most potent music of her soon-to-be shortened career. While Back to Black was a breakthrough, it also became an albatross, for it would fuel the worst instincts of the leery and predatory forces that saw what was meant to be an soul-baring exercise and turned it into the very things that hastened Amy's premature demise. Whether one allows what happened afterward to define their listening experience, it doesn't change the fact that what Amy created has stood the test of time in ways we're still making sense of to this day. It just makes one wish that everything was different. Favorites: Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mr. Jones, Back to Black, Love is a Losing Game, Tears Dry on Their Own, Addicted.
Awesome song. Beautifully sang. Absolutely shocking recording. Clipping all over the place.
Great album!
Her vocals and styling reminded me of Eartha Kitt
Was a bit distracted playing WatchDogs but I did like it, not my usual style and all the songs are quite similar (though that is common in an album I suppose) but her voice is just incredible and enjoyable to listen to. The lyrics hit really deep too. Back To Black is my favorite track I think
I had heard many of the tracks from this album before, but never listened to it from start to finish. It's a genre I'm not keen on, so forcing a four star rating out of me is actually a good thing. I think plenty has been said about how this is retro/ nostalgia/ comfort music, which it is a bit I guess, but before everyone started doing it and it became a bit lame.
I really liked this, but don’t know that I’d pick it again. What an absolutely legendary vocalist!
Didn't know I loved Amy so much
I missed this album when it came out, only being familiar with a couple of the songs like “Rehab” and “Back to Black.” What a fantastic album. I love the retro sound with the horns and the great production. And that voice. What a talent and what a shame that we didn’t hear more from her.
What a voice, and what great retro-modern sound for the mid-00s.
What an album! Such a classic sound with modern lyrics, amazing. A talent lost by those she counted on the most, but really, what a voice and album.
Two saves
classic
With a name like Winehouse, this girl did not have a chance. But she had a smoky voice and left behind a fine album with a neo-retro-Motown vibe.
One of those huge, acclaimed albums that just passed me by. Overall, great pop soul and clear why it was a hit. Second track in particular has that recognisable Mark Ronson production. Title track and Tears Dry On Their Own were the standouts for me. Listening to it in retrospect, it’s hard not to wonder if this would have been her opus or the beginning of something greater.
Solid pop album with a retro lounge singer vibe. I'd never listened beyond the hits, and I'm into her.
Great album.
Rehab was a great song but is the weakest of this great collection. Not a new sound, but certainly has something to it that is just... different.
I listened to this album when it first came out and remember thinking it was only so-so. Nearly 20 years later and my opinion has definitely changed for the better. A smooth listen and some deep lyrics.
'Rehab' never did much for me, and because it was the lead single of this record, I only had a mild interest in Winehouse. It's really too bad, because if any other track on this record had been released I woulda been sucked in hook, line, and sinker. Lush production, and has their ever been a voice more suitable for a music style?! I wouldn't say I'm late to the game on Amy Winehouse. It's just that this project really forcing me to listen has made me a fan.
Really good jazz-soul album from a one of a kind artist!
Legendarisk🙏 Elske soulen, elske attituden, elske stemmen. Va mye merr reggae enn eg trodde... Beste sang: You know I'm no good
I think she really did need to go to rehab.
Obviously a power house, maybe just a little boosted by a tragic end. Love this overall, but only knock is the Ronson production kind of grates on me after a while - feels like it kind of over does the old timey sound. That BBC session album sounds a lot better to my ears and shows off her voice more.
I never listened to Amy Winehouse during her heyday but she’s good. I can see why she was a phenomenon. Rehab, uh, sure hits in a bad way now though.
2006 Strong songwriting, amazing delivery and good production. Just so massively overplayed to the point that I'm no longer minded to hear it. This is on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ❌️ no need Revisit 🫳 ★★★★☆ (7/10)
Great album, what a killer voice she had. She also had a great sound with her band. It's a real shame that she burned so bright and so briefly.
What a voice, what a loss to music
Good album . Tragic end
Excellent album. Makes me want to listen to more of her catalogue
I went into this album having heard Back in Black the song, but I was not expecting the rest of the album. best way I could describe it is that it feels like the musical version of being wine drunk off a good red; bold, unapologetic, classy and sappy
Great album tragic
an amazing talent, a tortured soul, a brilliant album. gone much too soon, she was the victim of her own excesses. r.i.p. amy. highlights: “you know i’m no good” “me and mr. jones” “back to black” “love is a losing game”
Outstanding album. First time I’ve listened to Amy Winehouse fully and am quite impressed. Solid 4
4.2 I'm glad this has come up towards the end of the list as I think it would have gotten a much lower score if it had come at the start. When this came out I had a few mates who were fawning over it, but I just dismissed it as being boring and ignored it for the next 2 decades. However, absorbing decades of female soul singers from this list have given me a new found appreciation for this album. I think it's much better than Frank. It sounds so modern, yet so 50s/60s/70s all at once, which is the perfect type of album. The only drawback is the song ordering, I feel like she went with her strongest upfront, which makes the second half run out of steam slightly. Space out the great tracks and I think it'd elevate the good tracks.
Iconic pieces in this album, which I prefer to listen as a single pieces instead of part of the album
They tried to make me give it 3 stars, I said no, no, no
Good album, I'd only listened to one or two songs previously but the whole thing was quite a nice listen overall.
Difficult to separate the music from her personal tragedy. However, her voice largely justifies the hype. Highlights for me are 'You Know I'm No Good' and 'Back To Black', but the quality is there throughout.
I've never sat down and intentionally listened to Amy Winehouse. Her music was everywhere in the early 'oughts though, and I recognise much of this album so I assume that many of these tracks were released as singles. This lady could FUCKING SING, it's such a shame how difficult and short her life was. I can't help but wonder if things would have played out differently in the modern media landscape which seems like spiteful towards successful women performers than back then.
Amazing voice. Can't imagine how amazing her career would have been
The sound she creates that feels both from another era and totally fresh is a real achievement, and beyond that, it's just pretty irresistible. The energy of the music often masks the rawness of the confessional quality of the lyrics. She's not just complaining about men, she's admitting her own dysfunctions, too.
Amy was bottled lightning. Her music took something tucked away in the annals of America and injected it with a certain painful chaotic energy that portended the tragedy that sadly felt almost inevitable in real time. Back to Black holds her entire persona in a way that more or less transcends criticism. To speak ill of it is to speak ill of her, because rarely has someone put so much of themselves into their art. I remember it being pleasurable in 2006, but now find it nearly impossible to listen to without feeling a little ill and a little heartbroken. It's hard to objectively remember if her lyrics were once funny and tongue in cheek or if they were always too dark to blend into the background, especially against the exquisite soul and horns more often associated with throwaway love songs. Her first album, "Frank," has the same energy, but without the Motown backdrop, its punches feel pulled. Back to Black was like giving Nina Simone command of a Motown catalog. Genius.
Day 5: This is more like it. I hadn't heard this album in full since about 2007 and it was a delight to hear it again. I had forgotten the non-singles, other than Me and Mr Jones, but aside from the slightly underwhelming Addicted they're all good. I especially liked He Can Only Hold Her.
Single-handedly made doo wop and retro-soul relevant to millions of people around the world in the mid-2000's. It's classic soul style arrangements, performed by veteran musicians, are infused with modern vulgarity, dark sentiments and direct emotions. Amy Winehouse has a powerful, echoic voice that bursts through the songs. Half of the songs are punchy and energizing, and half are sad and soulful but never despairing. I missed this at its peak of popularity. I thought she was good from hearing "Rehab" pop up everywhere. Everyone around me liked her. I just didn't know that she was making doo wop and soul music, which I've always loved.
Onhan tällä levyllä kuitenkin useampi hitti, kuten esimerkiksi You Know I'm No Good ja Back to Black joista nautin erittäin paljon.
Kappaleissa on mukavasti vaihtelevuuttakin. Kyllä tätä kuuntelee!
a nearly perfect album, one of a kind
What a great sound and voice that briefly came together. My God.
A collection of broken love songs with a soulful backbone and crisp vocals. Upbeat tempos collide with the dark lyrics of each arrangement. Great for playing in the background while you work on other projects.
I always hated Rehab, but the rest of this album is thematic and its sound is clearly defined. Listening gave me a greater appreciation for Amy Whinehouse and I would listen again.
Amy Winehouse is supposed to be this tragic figure like Kurt Cobain. She's also a member of the 27 club. I do think this album is good but I think her fame has more to do with the aesthetic of Amy Winehouse than anything that she actually produced. This album isn't a jump in quality from the soul produced in the 70s and 80s. She has a great voice but it's not better than Nina, Tina, or Aretha. But it's not an example of a white woman stealing a sound, I think there is something genuinely captivating about the story of Amy Winehouse. She had kind of a perfect storm that fit into the cuture of the 2000s. She was unquestionably talented, but she was also hot and trashy. I think the 2000s was a time where multiculturalism and the rise of rap/hip hop was making people kind of respect the style and sensibility of being trashy. Eminem was exploding onto the scene and artists like Christina Aguilera, lady gaga, were making it big telling stories that were raw unfiltered and unashamed of their roots. And the fashion was gross. This was shaping an America that saw wearing low wasted jeans and getting trashed on cheap liquor as an aesthetic choice that was desirable. I think people saw themselves in Amy, even if they weren't talented they could understand alcoholism and living like a rockstar, and they recognized what a tragedy it was that she was struggling so much with those addictions. She fit the tortured artist persona that people loved to watch and enable except she wasn't pretentious or elitist. She was easy to love and a lot of people did. Britney Spears has the same effect on people and would be remembered the same way if she would have died instead of shaving here head. Back to the album it's good and I understand the reverence. It's the best work of somebody taken too soon. I'm not going back to rehab is awesome and obviously more poignant with her death.
She made a big splash while she was around but outside of my frame of reference. She sounds great, the music is solid. Grammy's well deserved.
4.0 - Very Good
Sounds like it’s from a parallel universe in the best way possible
-ahhh this is gorgeous. her voice is fucking amazing and i’m so fascinated by all the influences she had -idk if i like this better than Frank. it’s been a min since ive heard it. neither albums are my faves ever but i think she really came into her own here, even tho it makes me sad as hell to listen to. RIP Amy -Favorites are Rehab, Back To Black, and Tears Dry On Their Own
8/10
Amy manages to deliver a vocal performance that inspires generations of pop artists to come. The emotion, genre bending, and charm she infuses into her lyrics shines through on this record, and while it doesn't break much instrumental molds, the vocal delivery deserves all accolades
Rehab // You Know I’m No Good // Back To Black // Tears Dry On Their Own // 3.5/5
You know the hits, you know her name. For good reason, but she’s got song after song. Damn good
I really like her voice. Reminds me of Willow.
A really good listen, from start to finish, especially if you listen to the Deluxe version, with some other good tunes and live versions. I guess it captures not only the sound but the overall aesthetic and feel of old school soul and RnB, even technically speaking. The songs are, imo, somewhat timeless and relatable, and you can tell they were written from the heart and captures a specific moment in time for Amy. And with 5 singles in it, I feel like it is a commercial album that deserves a very good score.
Short! Classic!
Throwback Wall of Sound style and she threw ALL of herself into her music. Tragic and beautiful.
Beautiful tragedy, big sounds, big voice, and a big personality. Throwback to the classic Wall of Sound that sounds modern.
Listened to this one before. It's very good but sad to listen to.
Beautifully combined soul and pop in final songwriter's album. Stunning vocals and troubled lyrics. However album is inconsistent in its quality (deluxe version), shorter project would have improved listening. Some melodies are very quirky, while others are complementary, letting vocals shine. +Rehab +Back to black +Valerie
Amy Winehouse, "Back to Black", 2006. Les arrangements de cordes, les cuivres qui claquent, les chœurs qui répondent "You go back to her / and I go back to...", tout est là. "You Know I'm No Good", "Love Is a Losing Game", "Back to Black"... chaque titre est une cicatrice qu'elle nous exhibe sans aucune pudeur.

i don't think i fully appreciated this album when it first came out and revisiting it now, a truly great album. made me emotional thinking about how much she must have been going through.
A classic. I don't think I've listened to "rehab" since initiating recovery and oof girl, maybe you should have tried it out
Solid album from start to finish. Blends nostalgic early RB and jazz vocal sounds with some really fresh sounding backing tracks. Thought the band and composition was great. Not exactly the style of music I look for but a pretty top notch album nonetheless.
Rehab is tragically a bit too ironic now, isn't it? Overall, I liked this album a lot more than Frank. It's still jazzy, bluesy, and soulful and her singing is still great, but this album feels much more grown up all around. Better production, better songwriting, more introspective and less shallow.
Great voice, not necessarily my usual genre, but lots of fun to listen to anyway. Kind of sad though, knowing her history.
Not sure it's something I'd listen to regularly, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album. She had a great voice and the music was solid.
Blah
soaring highs no pun intended rip but a few of the tracks dont do it for me and doesnt have anything i love quite as much as the super homophobic song off of Frank Fav song: Tears Dry On Their Own
They made the movie fit this album. A bit strained but it was still good.
Interesting juxtaposition between Just Friends and Back To Black, with Tears Dry On Their Own finding the middle spot. And Addicted would be more fun if Amy's lift wasn't so tragic. Good voice and musicality, although a bit same-same.
Solid. Lost her way too soon.
It was a great album!!! I love vocal of Amy Winehouse!!! And I really enjoyed the vibe!!!
Generally, not my kind of music. That being said, she has an amazing voice, and some of these songs were huge when they came out. Completely makes sense that this album is on the list. Solid 4.
Some great songs on here and just solid all around.
Should've been called Back To Rehab but otherwise this is fantastic - Amy Winehouse is fantastic and she was gone too soon from this world. RIP
It’s tough to give this any less than a 4. I don’t really listen to soul music and I probably wouldn’t buy this record but… it’s Amy. A generational talent and with such a tragic but memorable story. It’s a good album it’s just not my taste. But respect to Ms Winehouse
Oft imitated over the last two decades but never duplicated. Plays great as an entire album, which I had never listened to in full!
Amy Winehouse was one of those artists I didn't really pay attention to. Truth be told this is the first time I'm listening to full album of hers. The sound calls back to Motown, girl bands of the 50s/60s, and blues with a more modern take. The lyrics are great and typically have way more edge than those genres, I almost think she would have been better as a rapper, but then the melody comes in and I discount that idea. A good album that has a solid foundation and many things to peak one's interest.
I didn't realise how many songs I knew from this album. Only the deluxe edition is on Spotify, and it's a lot more ska/two tone than blues or jazzy. Love Is a Losing Game is an incredibly sad song.
Modern tales of infidelity blues and retro sounds. Loved how raunchy this album is. Tears Dry On Their Own is a magnificent song. Yee-fucking-haw. New add to the 4.5 list.
This album stands in contrast to a lot of similar works in the genre in that it isn't one note, there's a lot of variety in tone and emotion here that compliment Amy Winehouse's incredible pipes. RIP RIP. Also, shout out to Mark Ronson, that man can produce music.
Classic album with very soulful vocals and serious subject matter.
Loved it! Not quite a 5 but really good
great
Really good album. A classic
I love her voice and old jazzy style. I'm sorry she couldn't grace the world with more of her work.
makes me wanna cry! rip to a great. dark, sad, beautiful, soulful, etc etc. can't not like this
It’s hard to separate the myth and legacy of Amy Winehouse from her music, as each of these songs holds so much weight it’s quite difficult to judge them on their own merits. These are some great songs though, and even though they tried to rinse her of every scrap of material she had posthumously, Back To Black still holds up as a phenomenal collection of songs and a record of an extreme talent.
Way better than I thought. A lot of the songs sounded the same, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
--Rehab...it's a bop but real sad --You Know I'm No Good...great bass. just a great overall groove --Me & Mr Jones...60s girl group vibes. good not great --Just Friends...I'm hearing Erykah Badu. It's nice --Back to Black...a haunting dirge --Love is a Losing Game...simple, sad, beautiful --Tears Dry on Their Own...a little too poppy relative to the rest of the album --Wake Up Alone...pretty but it feels a little aimless --Some Unholy War...grimy with cool harmonies --He Can Only Hold Her...the mood lightens slightly, probably for the best. Nice and funky --Addicted...it's fun. I feel bad for liking it knowing what eventually happened
Suprisingly good, I thought I heard all the songs to often in the radio, but man... these songs have power!!
Ubiquitous in the late 00s and still stands the test of time.
Easy listening and somewhat profound lyrics regarding addiction and alcoholism.
Un gran álbum de una voz increíble
Good album, she’s an icon
I like this Amy Winehouse album a lot more than Frank. No bad songs on this and it's banger after banger. 8/10
It’s good but being possibly sacrilegious I actually like the first album better - just.
Super consistent, it does need a bit more variety, though. RIP Amy.
classigc
This album is a modern masterpiece.
This album took me back to when I was maybe in my early teens when my nan would play this album nonstop in the kitchen. Such a talented musician and great songwriter. The instrumentation was stellar and the voice performance felt so groovy and funky it made me just wanna bop to the beats. Two albums in and I have yet to be let down
Never heard Tears Dry On Their Own before and it's a bop! Rehab is a classic. Everything else was pretty good.
4.5
3.5
8/11/25. I remember disliking this when it first came out, but now I’ve come around to enjoy it. A lot of pain in Am/‘s voice and really good production.
Very good better than I expected. Really like the songwriting here and Amy's voice 8/10 Favourite: Back to Black Least Favourite: Some Unholy War
listened to a crusty ass rip of this album, good shit tho
A fantastic voice!
Such a sad album. Her voice is so unique and full of soul and depth. The songs are fun. For as much rock that is on this list, this album stands out amongst that. It’s funny that when I was younger, I thought Amy Winehouse was before my time, not realizing she was alive and active artist at the time. Will always enjoy this record.
Wow, that was really good. Her range and depth of both style and form was fantastic.
Sad and good.
