Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Really enjoyed this album. She was so talented and I wish there was more.
Love, love. Only complaint is there isn't enough of it. Whopper album.
5 cant go wrong
An absolute surprise for someone who never listened to Amy Winehouse outside of “Rehab”. Her voice is amazing and haunting. The music behind her vocals is so good too
She should have gone to rehab 🤷🏻♂️
in my collection. Listen all the time. Truest example of a human blessed with unreal talent. I wish she was also blessed with some peace in her heart.
Hoo boy. What a voice.
So full and sweet a pleasure to listen to. Enjoyed sitting down and actually playing this on the turntable. Next time it will be headphones moment I think, for closer appreciation (it all sounds very tight. id use the word phrasing but I am not qualified to use that). This kind of perfection inspires awe is all I can say. to me, its a wonderful cabaret and torch song , but more than usual she is a revelatory story telling musician. Its all laid bare. Her voice. others will describe it better but its both beautiful delicate and pained - there is an edge which does come out. Isa it damage? Is it cigarettes and drugs like Billie and Piaf? But made unfortunately more poignant by her tragically early loss to drugs and a troubled life. Enough analysis. Its lovely sitting in warm stereo with her in the room for a moment.
It was February 2007. My first day back at work after annual leave. I arrived at my desk to find a burned cd, courtesy of a good comrade of mine, Rebecca Garden. It came with a note exclaiming the quality of the artists on the disc - snippets of the latest release from French band, Nouvelle Vague & the latest album by someone called Amy Winehouse. I’d never heard of either artists before. I was stunned by the quality of the Amy Winehouse album. And still regard it as the best album I’ve heard this century. It was also my gateway to both Mark Ronson & The Daptones - artists who brightened the musical landscape of the time. At the time I was a participant in an annual competition (Mortal Coil) to predict what famous people would die in the coming 12 months. Pretty soon Amy’s name started to appear on people’s lists. Never on mine I just couldn’t predict that seeming inevitability. The week she died a friend & I went to the Beach Road Hotel at Bondi to see Paris Wells, a favourite of mine who was up from Melbourne. She did a beautiful version of Back To Black & there was not a dry eye in the joint. A few years later I saw a travelling exhibition about Amy at the Jewish Museum in St Kilda - her clothes, notebooks & her record collection. This album speaks for itself. Side 1 is particularly outstanding. Ten outta five for me.
Hab ich mir auf Platte gekauft, weil ich es so gerne höre.
Excellent, short and sweet
4.9 a hairs breath away from a 5/5 faves: tears dry on their own, addicted
I mean - this album is just iconic. Amy’s vocals and the brass elements are just to die for and the way the songs are high energy whilst also having mellow and serious themes running through them is everything I could ever need. (Not al all biased) 5/5
A great album
Masterpiece. Unforgettable voice.
Love this album! Really shows you a side of life and relationships not much music out there does. I really feel she went through this stuff! Will always be on the top listens for me.
Great album from the legendary, Amy!
Masterpiece, and was very lovely listening to while driving on a sunny winter day! Forgot how much reggae there was but enjoyed it
This truly is a perfect album
Zo'n gaaf album, geweldig gezongen, mega vette productie
Very good
Love Amy.
Surprisingly good - I've liked Amy Winehouse but never experienced how good the full album is. One to come back to.
Totally forgot how amazing this album is! Every song is fire, and love singing along to it all. This album will go down as a classic in the future. A must have. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: need on vinyl! Favourite Song: Back To Black
Manche schaffen es nicht und gehen viel zu früh 😞😥 Geniales Album !
DIE hatte's drauf ...
Ja dit album is dus voor mij wel echt 5/5.
Don’t think I’ve listening all the way to the end before or in order
This is a classic! Definitely an influential and inspiring album
Beste Soul-Grooves!
I'd never really listened to Amy Winehouse before, excluding like Rehab. I found this to be a beautiful and profoundly sad album knowing of her ultimate overdose just a few years after this album's release. You could hear references to her struggle with (and denial of) addiction throughout many of the songs. Her reflections on love and hurt were insightful. I think I most enjoyed Back to Black and Love is a Losing Game.
What an amazing turnaround from Frank. I think all of us can agree that the Frank movie was better than Frank the album. If you haven't seen it, stop reading this review right now and go watch Frank. It'll change your life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEJu9WJaMLo Back to Black is no Frank. And 'frankly' I'm glad that we had to listen to that album before attacking this one. Sure, I wasn't impressed, but Back to Black was so, so good. It's only now after listening to this that I can begin to understand what all the Amy Winehouse fuss was about. This was great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A7iVIg_ry8
I thought “Frank,” Amy Winehouse’s debut, was great. But “Back to Black” is a phenomenal follow-up full of growth the way few musicians are able to pull off on their sophomore album. But as unique as Winehouse might be as a vocalist, perhaps “Back to Black” should be credited to Amy Winehouse & The Dap-Kings? The Dap-Kings are too often unrecognized for their work with Sharon Jones, but they feel like the driving force behind the sound on “Back to Black,” alongside producer Mark Ronson and other contributors. In fact, 49 musicians were credited on the album. All this is not to diminish Winehouse’s talents. She was a great songwriter and one of the most special voices of her generation. “Rehab” was deservedly a huge hit, but actually feels a little out of place on “Back to Black.” The rest of the album is very unified stylistically, and presents a really cool evolution for Winehouse. It would have been so special to see where she went from there.
Rehab is likely the most well known song on this album, but it is my least favorite. Its lyrics are routed in truth but sound put on. And I’ve always been annoyed by the pacing of “…no no no.” It’s behind the beat…delayed…and that gap is a wide canyon of despair. Despite my annoyances with Rehab, it is still a catchy song. My favorite song is Back To Black. It came together quickly and is so simple. It sounds like a hit James Bond theme song. This whole album has a cool throwback feel to the soul, jazz, and R&B of yesteryear. It is so smooooooooth. The album drips a warmth, drawing the listener in. It’s truly a an accomplishment worthy of record companies pulling up more female led acts in the late 2000s and beyond as its success reportedly did.
Very good mix between soul and R&B, vocals blend perfectly between genres and are quite versatile throughout the album. 4 or 5 timeless tracks on here as well. 4.5
Loved this! What a singer she was. Can’t say I’ve ever heard the album but certainly heard most of the songs on it at some point. Excellent.
Classic
A classic. Her voice is spectular
Super interesting sound for the 2000s
WOW. I've been pretty ignorant to have ignored Amy Winehouse for as long as I have. People have referenced it to me, I know producers who are supremely inspired by Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson and consider this their urtext. No wonder! It's so good that it makes me wonder if I rated Adele's 21 too high. This is the real deal. The REAL DEAL. I have this suspicion that it would be a 5, even over production that's banal. This album is carried by the songs and, most importantly, Amy Winehouse. Nobody needs to be told that she has a one-in-a-million voice. It's just apparent. So I'm guessing that, even if the production was just slightly off the mark, we'd still be talking about this album. BUT. The fact that the production is so incredibly brilliant, on TOP of a world-class voice, makes this an incredible album. They don't just nail the soul sound, Phil Spektor on up, they album (I know this is heretical)... improve upon it? They at least update it. The drums sound inspired by hip hop drum samples, which themselves are soul records a lot of the time...! But they're played live. Genius. Everything sonically is perfect. Hearing this album makes the late 2000's / early 2010's soul revival period make so much more sense to me. We've had some great records come out of that. As well as plenty of lazy records. This is really where it begins and ends for me. Also I have two friends who played on these records! So that's kind of cool. Maybe I should move to New York... 5/5/5/5/5!
Das erste mal komplett gehört. Das ist eigentlich nicht so meine Musikrichtung. „Back To Black“ und „Love Is A Losing Game“ sind tolle Songs, insgesamt ein tolles Album.
Cooles Album. Wusste gar nicht, dass Winehouse so soulig war
The album doesn’t show struggle with her lifestyle but rather celebration of it, although it would take her life
Sonzao nask
Such style. Such Confidence. Such honesty.
Beautiful album, absolutely a must-listen for anyone. Its a shame she passed away so early on, this shows her potential at mesmerizing lyricism and insanely good vocals.
Brilliant album!
Perfect.
Probably the top of the top tier albums to mix the class and sound of an older age with darkness
Love this album. Miss Amy dearly.
Yup, voice to die for
It's a classic. Rare example of what I think a perfect album sounds like Ronson's work leading the backing band really elevates her lyrics and adds a haunting element to the band. Super tragic story overall
Yes unforgetable
Dispensa comentários. Um clássico moderno
A classic vocalist album. Lyrically matched to her soulful delivery it’s a perfect pairing of style and talent.
Older styles done exceptionally in a more modern lens. Production sounds great, singing is excellent. Can’t ask for much more.
She went back to black :(
Undeniable talent. It's a shame she left this world too soon. I'd have loved to see what she had in store if her alcoholism hadn't got the better of her.
Amy ran so Adele could walk.
Are you kidding?! Easy 5 stars. I will fight anyone who says otherwise (there is no one here)
A masterpiece.
LOVE THIS ALBUM <3333 love amy so much
Gone way too soon. I could listen to this over and over and over. 6/5
my only complaint is that I wish it was longer
Just an awesome album. Everything great. You could play this in a smoke circle.
Definitely a mood. I only knew one song before and now I’ve added like three to my playlist.
siis mestariteos innit 🤌🏻 niiku must tuntuu et sillee ohuesti inhoon amy winehousen musaa aina ku joku sitä ehottaa mut oikeesti elin parasta elämää tätä kuunnellesa eli suomeks amy ei oo mun social musa vaan sellane cheeky yksinkuuntelu ralli 🥴 all in all ikoninen ja sellane levy joka oli joteki järjesteltyki oikei ja ei tullu yhtää tylsää vaikka tbh aina tulee kokonaista levyy kuunnellessa vähä tylsää
A masterpiece.
A tremendous talent that we lost far too soon. Back to Black is in the running for the best pop song of all time, and there are no bad songs on here. I'll never tire of this album.
I am sure everyone will say timethign about her dyeing way to young. She was very talentened
This entire album is a cry for help. It's so very tragic. She was an amazing vocalist. This album is on another level.
5/5 Fav Track: Tears dry on their own amazing album, wish it could go on forever amy ate ts up
i mean come on
I never listened to Amy much until a few years ago after watching that documentary about her and then just fell in love. So genuine and talented, and this album is among my favorites ever, listen to it multiple times a year 🖤
A perfect album from start to finish. Only issue is that it is too short. I could listen to her sing forever. Wonderful lyrics, melodies and production. 5 ⭐️
Banger, classic album.
Love is a Losing Game will forever and ever be The Song. Amazing voice. 10/10 no notes.
Best thing she produced. RIP
Bingo. This album amazed me and I saved all the songs into my library. Also, I listened to each track minimum twice. Amy Winehouse is a legend. She left us early, only leaving 2 studio albums behind. From this, you know that her records have a high good song density. The record starts with well known incredible songs and then ends with less popular tracks that really suited my taste. Does not disappoint, amazing experience.
I love Amy so much. Perfect pairing to anything. RIP Kween.
So fucking good.
One of few albums with no skippable tracks - my first listen through, and wow
I have always enjoyed this album. Amy brought a new take to a classic sound that influenced many artists to come after her. What's interesting is I think she rekindled a passion for a classic sound. We need more artists like her.
"Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse is an album that has left a profound impact on me. Beyond the incredible music, it's the heartbreaking story and Amy's remarkable voice that make it a masterpiece. Amy Winehouse's tumultuous life is a backdrop to this album, and her struggles and pain are evident in every note. "Back to Black" is an emotional rollercoaster, taking us through the highs and lows of love, addiction, and heartbreak. Her honesty and vulnerability in her songwriting are nothing short of heartbreaking. Amy's voice is a true wonder. Her sultry, soulful, and jazzy vocals are the perfect vehicle for conveying the raw emotions that permeate each song. Her unique timbre and phrasing make you feel every word she sings, and it's as if she's singing directly to your soul. The title track, "Back to Black," with its haunting lyrics and melody, stands out as an emblem of her talent and pain. It's an unforgettable song that showcases her ability to turn personal turmoil into art. In summary, "Back to Black" is not just an album; it's a glimpse into Amy Winehouse's soul. Her remarkable voice and the rawness of her story are an enduring testament to her extraordinary talent. This album has touched me deeply, and Amy's legacy continues to shine through her music.
Not one song skipped
One of my favourite albums of all time. Amy is my queen and I miss her #ripAmyWinehouse. I think that everyone can enjoy at least 1 song on this album. For me, they are all bangers.
BANGER would listen to again
Really enjoyed it from start to back. Kinda sad though to read about the background of the album
Fantastic
It’s Amy Winehouse, are you kidding me? 5/5
this was incredible. Top Tracks: 1) Rehab 2) Back To Black 3) Me & Mr. Jones 4) Tears Dry On Their Own 5) Love Is A Losing Game
Excellent Album
yes
Absolute mint
This album is perhaps one of the best RnB/soul albums of all time. It certainly is one of the best of the 2000s. Pitchfork giving this album a 6.4 is one of their most egregious reviews of all time. It is a modern sounding album, with tons of vintage flair. The album pulls it's sound most strongly from 60s and 70s Motown. The lyrics are shockingly vulnerable and personal. The album starts off with, "they tried to make me go to rehab" lol. It is common for albums of this genre to talk about love and heartbreak, but it was rare at the time to be so candid about drug use and personal failures. This album changed the game on that front. Amy's vocal performance is, of course, incredible. I don't think Adele would exist without Amy having first recorded this album. RIP to a GOAT
Love this album, very familiar with it, but excited to listen with a fresh ear. Sadder overall then I remember, but her voice is so lovely. So unapologetic and genuine as trite as that is. Whole album just feels like a ride or die love story, timeless passion, drug fueled, and destined to flame out. Really like the drugs and love aspect of it all. Sad but a beautiful moment
More than a throw back to the motown it is an update. One can only wonder what we might have had if she had stayed with us longer. The producers and the Dap Kings add a lot.
Title track is the stand out, rest of the album cultivates a very unique-for-the-time aesthetic that many have since tried to copy and few have succeeded in honoring.
Her voice is great. Really enjoyed the line, "what kind of fuckery is this?" Rehab is probably my favorite track.
I was not expecting to like this as much as I did! Not normally into jazz but something about her sound was very groovy to me.
Nothing to add, really. This is timeless. I can't see any of the aughts' fingerprints on these tracks. Just soul.
It needs to be noted that without Amy Winehouse there wouldn't be Adele. This album and her unfortunate passing laid out the blueprint for her to STRUT in the modern age.
The soulful singer Adele wishes she was. Classy jazz arrangements that don’t detract from her smoky soulful vocals. Fade to Black still hits with the lyrics.
Perfect
i remember when this came out it was all over the place. felt kinda different for the time stylewise especially with how much attention it was getting. also crazy to see how many singles come out of this (rehab, you know i'm no good, back to black, tears dry on their own, etc.)
Every song on the album is amazing. One of my all time favorites, Amy’s voice is chilling and I could listen to it all day, her writing is intense, sad and very personal. The production is big and dramatic with big resonating drums and a lot of horns.
Fantastisk album
FAVO: Rehab, You know Im no good, me and mr jones, back to black, Tears dry on their own, addicted
Yeeeesssss!
That was terrific. I always avoided her music, because I thought it was going to be as much of a train wreck as her personal life, but I was wrong. She really was promising.
Album of the 2000s, easy.
Always amazing
Great album. This one I have a lot of nostalgia for, having been a teenager at the time. The band is fantastic, the lyrics clever and witty, and the vocals are of course amazing. I have a great memory of seeing her live at a festival. Unfortunately, Amy herself was barely holding it together, but still put on a great performance. Her band and backing singers/dancers were incredible that day.
I LOVE AMY WINEHOUSE!!!!
5 stars right off the bat. Love this woman so much. I feel like I can completely relate to her in regards to the heroin addiction. And the Back to Black song is just so epic. I have tried to perfect singing that.
Love
In a time when people associated soul with Destiny's Child and Mariah Carey and similar super slick music, Amy Winehouse put the soul back in soul. Great record. Very influential. Favorite song: Rehab
Its one of them albums. Alls Slaps no skips! not too long none of that unnecessary bs. RIP Amy
This was easy. One of my first 10 LPs from the Duluth Electric Fetus. 5/5 Classic.
Masterpiece
rehab, you know i'm no good, back to black are 100/100 songs! tears dry on their own and love is a losing game are like 99/100 songs!
A tragically perfect embodiment of both rhythm and blues. The Instrumentation sounds like it was pulled right from the grooves of an old Ray Charles vinyl. The vocals have so much soul and are so earnestly delivered that it’s impossible to avoid feeling the dourness that Amy so clearly felt.
amy really is one of the best vocalists of all time, and this album is just great all around.
5. I was obsessed with this album when it first came out. Hadn't listened to it for quite a few years now though and was worried it might not live up to my memories of it. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. Still love it.
One of the all time greatest albums and singers. Period.
Writing this as I'm going past the Hawley Arms on the bus. Criminal there were only 2 studio albums. Nothing but awe and frustration that this was it. Such a loss, not much else to add.
My first time listening to Back To Black, and yeah, I get the hype. This is the kind of music that's my jam though, so that's unsurprising. Unique and powerful vocal work and songs that feel both timeless and classic.
I *love* this album. Non-fans will remember it for "Rehab," but it doesn't even crack my top 5 songs on the album. Her voice is amazing and the production is top-notch. I love the late 50's/early '60s girl group vibe; the backup singers on "Me & Mr. Jones" are a particularly satisfying blend of homage and self-aware humor (imagining the Ronnettes singing "No Slick Riiiiick" never fails to bring a smile to my face). And speaking of humor, "Addicted" is a weed appreciation song like no other. When I listen to the album in its entirety, I *might* skip "Love Is a Losing Game" or "Wake Up Alone," but they're hardly bad songs. And the rest of the album is solid as a rock. If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out the deluxe version of this album, which features (among other tracks) a slower version of "Valerie" recorded live on BBC 1's "Live Lounge" (as opposed to the snappier option from Mark Ronson's "Version" album), and a cover of the Specials' "Hey Little Rich Girl" that she absolutely *murders*. This is an easy 5 stars.
I love this album & Amy Winehouse so much, I created a YouTube playlist YEARS ago dedicated to her. She absolutely nailed the 60s girls group soul vibe. Her voice gives me chills, and her lyrics were sharp & biting. How she managed to make music sound retro & modern at the same time is beyond me. I've seen many live performances & the documentary, Amy. It guts me every time and wish she were still with us. What an incredible talent. 5 brilliant stars for Amy & this album.
"He said, "I just think you're depressed." "We only said goodbye with words, I died a hundred times." "One I wished I never played. Oh, what a mess we made and now, the final frame. Love is a losing game." "I cannot play myself again, I should just be my own best friend." --- Favourite Tracks: You Know I'm No Good/Back To Black/Love Is A Losing Game/Tears Dry On Their Own/Wake Up Alone Summary: Even though (at time of writing) it has been 12 years since the death of Amy Winehouse, I think the UK in particular still mourns the loss. It is kind of a strange thing for her music to invoke such sadness and also such nostalgic joy when I think about the kind of character she was - her talent is beyond doubt and I know this album in particular will be remembered for as far as my mind can imagine.
Love this
Pracht vrouw.
One of my personal favorite albums of all time about an incredibly tragic figure and her relationships that surrounded her. Deeply personal and one of the best mainstream radio records of the last 15 years
Still magnificent
Just a fantastic album. Just such great songwriting and the legendary era bending voice that she had. I could and will listen to this over and over again. 5 stars all day!
An absolute masterpiece
I have always known of this album but I never realised how replayable this thing is. Every track was just well done, and I can’t believe that this was Winehouse’s last album. But I am so glad that I actually dived into listening to this because it has aged wonderfully.
Very difficult to listen to this objectively. I was never a winehouse fan however it is impossible to deny that this is a great album. If it isn’t a 5 star album I don’t know what is
And another album I’ve been really excited for. I really love rehab and back to black so I had high expectations for the rest of the album and it didn’t disappoint. The few tracks in between my favs were amazing but the entire second half of the album makes up for it. For being less than 40 minutes it really packs a punch, especially with the tragic context of the subject matter.
Legendarisch album. Jammer genoeg veel te vroeg ons verlaten
Excellent album! Amy Winehouse performance is stellar but the production overall really ties everything together. Everything is really well made and there's really nothing to complain about. This isn't really my genre or something I actively listen to but there's no denying that it's really good.
Upstairs in bed with my ex-boy He's in a place, but I can't get joy Thinking on you in the final throes This is when my buzzer goes Run out to meet your chips and pita You say when "we're married" 'Cause you're not bitter "There'll be none of him no more" I cried for you on the kitchen floor I cheated myself Like I knew I would I told you I was trouble You know that I'm no good This is a spectacular album. Themes and tracks are some of the most profoundly dark stuff you'll ever hear, and the overall album is absolutely excellent. 5/5
This album is a gem!
This album made me realize that Amy walked so Adele could run. She really would've gone on to make more great music if she could've been here longer. I like her sound, no one does it quite like here.
She was great! Such a deep voice! She just died much too early!
I miss Amy and hope she found happiness.
actual genuine masterpiece
Gone too early. What a beautiful, sad album.
“Back to Black” and “Rolling in the Deep” are not the best songs from this album.
Amy Winehouse had that unique talent of appealing to music lovers across genres, she was a once-in-a-generation artist. The music on this record has everything and this is why pretty much everyone could find something to love. Even though she had one of the finest soul voices ever, she wasn't a diva, she was raw, intense and authentic. And everybody loved her. With Rehab and Back to Black she had two absolute gems on an album filled with real quality. What a crying shame that she didn't have chance to build on this record before her untimely death. She surely would have been one of the greatest recording artists of all-time.
Awesome album. Rehab was big when I was about 10 years old, so while I knew Amy Winehouse it was just a bit ahead of my time and I hadn’t really heard much other stuff from her. This made me go down a rabbit hole about her life, and the album is really pretty heartbreaking in hindsight. She directly confronts her addiction problems and relationship difficulties which never really seemed to let up for her. What really stands out to me is how timeless sounding the album is. Someone could have told me that this was released basically anytime between 1950 and now and I probably could have believed them. She is clearly influenced by early female jazz/blues/pop groups but does it in a way that feels both old and modern at the same time (Just Friends sounds like it could be a cover of The Specials or something). I was afraid I would get tired of her unique voice after a full album but that didn’t happen at all (though it’s only 35 minutes and I did think the first half was stronger than the second). The original release of the album is good enough for a 5 rating from me, but the deluxe version also includes a live (slower) BBC Radio recording of Valerie which might be might favorite song of hers (it’s a cover that she made famous). Favorite song: You Know I’m No Good Other: Rehab, Back To Black, Love Is a Losing Game, Wake Up Alone, Valerie
Not one bad song! Amazing production by Ronson!
Favorite of all time!
So good. Holds up.
lobed
An epic, dark and jazzy. Iconic album.
Something worth listening to again.
Mais de 5 faixas clássicas e dá pra ouvir de cabo a rabo
One of the many albums on this list that I sit back and say “why didn’t I listen to this earlier”
It is near perfection. A master piece… unluckily, what happened to her added poignancy to these songs. Her voice was so strong. Her lyrics, a confession and a premonition. Listening this with dry eyes is nearly impossible.
Big vibes. Great vocals, great instrumentation, great breakup album.
Is this as good as her first album? Maybe. It might also be better. It might be reconsidered to be one of the best albums of the past 30 years. It's timeless, a brilliant reminder that an amazing talent had a whole runway of great work in front of her. Amy Winehouse's ultimately legacy might become that she was the most talented member of the infamous 27 Club.
Daily Amy confirmed.
The first time I heard Amy Winehouse was when I was playing Rock Band 3 on the Wii. I was the drummer of course, my sister was on the guitar, my cousin was on the keyboard, and my aunt was singing. All of a sudden as my aunt was scrolling through the list of songs to choose, she found Rehab, one of her absolute favorites. Inevitably, she butchered it (she was a few drinks in - it was vacation) and I did not revisit Amy Winehouse for over half a decade. It was many years later when I heard Valerie, off of Mark Ronson's 2007 album. No clue how I found it, but I did. I was instantly transported and needed to learn more about this siren of a singer - Amy Winehouse. The first thing I found was this album, and from that point on I was hooked. You truly feel every word of every song. There's heartbreak, pain and sorrow altogether in a way that never lets go of your attention. She was a magnificent singer and this album truly was her swansong. Every time I listen to this album it never fails to amaze me. She's one of the few singers in history who can sing any genre they choose and succeed. She just happened to take influences from jazz and reggae, and nobody can complain there. Closest thing I've heard to her in terms of matching her vocal prowess and versatility was actually this one girl on American Idol a few years back. Her name was Casey Bishop and she took more of a punk rocker spin but she 100% matched the ability to make you feel every word of a song. She's a dud now unfortunately (like most singers from that show) but I recommend you check out some of the YouTube videos of her performances on the show.
Now I REALLY miss Adam ;( "Me & Mr. Jones" starting to feel personal. The first half is brash hits and the second half is sirenic, like a soundtrack for a good dream.
amo demais esse álbum desde a adolescência, a voz dessa mulher é insuperável nunca haverá alguém como ela! minhas favs: you know i'm no good back to black rehab love is a losing game tears dry on their own
Such a great album and a terrible loss.
I had heard Amy's hit singles which I enjoyed but this was her first album I've gone through. Thought it was fantastic, she has an amazing voice which works perfectly with the sad nature of her songs. At 34mins the album is balanced nicely and doesn't overstay its welcome. Highlights: Rehab Back to Black You Know I'm No Good
A striking and powerful contemporary soul album... there's really no filler here. Everything is good or really good. Engaging lyrics and Amy's beautiful voice.
This is not an album I would go to very often, but it's undeniably great. Superb orchestration. in particular, love the bari sax bass lines every time they come in. Amy's voice, while not my favorite, fits the overall sound and mood to a T. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
shits dope
I had no idea what Amy Winehouse or her music sounded like, and I was not expecting it to sound like this and to be this blown away by it from the drop. Just an incredible record, her voice is amazing, excellent production, it's the whole package. I had no idea.
Stellar in the genre, reinvigorating a classic 60s sound with a twist.
Just a really really good record. Amy sticks to the classic 50s/60s jazz sound throughout with hints of some other genres like reggae or ska or hip hop. Her voice itself could probably carry most of the songs but the production surrounding her is fantastic and catchy as well. The lyrics stay pointedly on her detrimental relationship and bring some heavy moments, accentuated by her amazing vocal delivery which has a knack for conveying emotions. 9/10
Any album with a strong female singer is automatically a good one, and Winehouse's hauntingly soulful voice is on full display here, baring her soul with a fearless honesty and vulnerability. Memorable horn riffs and catchy, upbeat melodies bely the dark subject matter that the lyrics so powerfully express, dripping as they are with pain and anguish. A must listen for anyone who appreciates powerful, authentic music.

Soul y R&B. Un megahit. Venga, vinilo.
Soul y R&B. Un megahit. Venga, vinilo.
Pobre mujer ... Rehab.
A record who makes de differences for the woman singers
8.5/10 I really love her!! I also liked the album a lot, maybe because I've known half of the songs prior. She's giving, the vibes are really good, the tunes have a distinct thing to them i really enjoyed this piece<3
This is one of the rare records that feels like it’s been in my life forever and also is older than I think it is. I remember this coming out and the first time I heard Rehab. I already knew about Amy Winehouse, and had heard one or two songs but mostly knew her from the tabloids already being obsessed with her. Classic example of an artist making a splash with their first record, but then tightening everything up and just laying down a masterpiece to build on their previous LP. The production is so on point here and her vocals are just soaring.
Legendary album by a legendary artist.
Amy Winehouse had such amazing control of her voice. The way air and sound flow in and out, it’s like a virtuoso saxophone player. The nostalgic sound of the album meshes so well with that voice. In her short and tragic career she managed to make two of the all-time best break-up albums. This album has hit after hit, only weakening slightly towards the end. A modern classic.
You know I’d actually never really listened to her before. Guess I’ve been missing iut
Such a strong performance. I didn't find it groundbreaking at the time, but have come to really love pretty much all the album. But especially back to black.
Pobre mujer ... Rehab.
Iconic album from a legend.
Blending in the love of contemporary 60s pop and soul with today’s pop, picky with the beats and chords, sprinkle a bit of brass and spice in there. You got yourself an album that surprises you with every song! Full score!! It's such a shame it had to end so soon.
'You Know I'm No Good', 'Love Is a Losing Game' o 'Back to Black' són encara millors, i tota la resta supura dolor, transformat en art pur
This was my first time listening to the entire album, and really the first time I listened to any of Amy's music beyond catching snippets on the car radio at night. I was expecting the first few songs to be pretty decent and then for the quality to fall way off, but every song is remarkably good. This is a great album and I'm definitely adding it to the collections of albums that I will come back to hear all the way through again.
a piece of art
Incredible woman
One of my all-time faves, no matter how tragic it is. So good, we traveled to Amy Winehouse's local bar in her hometown!
One of the greats. I love listening to this slightly tipsy, half-pretending to be a wreck.
me and mr jonesss
How can you not 5* this
Fantastic album.
Not something I would normally listen too but I actually thought it was a great album
Not a weak song on that record. The combination of Winehouse’s “hang it out there” lyrics with the soul / R&B works so well. Amazing production, musicians, vocals, and lyrics.
Classic. Amy was way ahead of her time. Gems: Wake Up Alone, Unholy War, My Tears Dry On Their Own The Deluxe edition is incredible too.
A classic sound on a classic album. An homage to The Wall of Sound or Motown, but it's authentic. The Dap-Kings sound amazing in support. The heart breaking lyrics, the pain in Amy's voice is real. Stellar.
Amy Winehouse's voice feels so classic and soulful. This album fully displays her talents. One of the best albums of the past 20 years. RIP
Primera vez que escucho un disco comoleto de Amy
No rehab today
Damn. I never really liked Rehab (or thought it was over-hyped) so I didn't pay much attention to Amy Winehouse. But having now gone through one-third of a musical odyssey via this list, I understand how good this album is. It is new age soul and Motown. The musical stylings have all the feel of something from the Supremes, Aretha, Stevie, or the Temptations but with a modern twist. And her vocals are massive; they just fill the room and were made to be set alongside a jazz arrangement. Again, a vintage style but something 21st century about it. She can croon. And her lyrics are pretty damn good too. This one totally surprised me, in a good way.
Man, whenever I hear this album, I still think of all of the great music that Amy could have made. She’s channeling all of the great soul and jazz singers here but at the same time putting her own stamp on the songs. I don’t think there’s a weak track on here except for perhaps “Rehab” and maybe that’s only because I’ve heard it so much. One of the things that I love about this record is how each time I hear it a different song stands out and because my favorite for the listen. Last time it was probably “Addicted”. As I am writing this (on my third consecutive listen) it’s the title track. I should give credit to the production as well. It’s a great sounding album from start to finish as well.
5/5
Any er en av de største musikerne i min tid. Jeg elsker henne og jeg savner henne. Hun var helt rå.
- Heard this before - Great album - Not my favourite genre and still one of the best albums of this century - Fav songs: Tears Dry on Their Own, Love is a Losing Game, Rehab
Yet another classic and cherished album from my youth, damn was this a slap back in the day, I remember the day I saw this the first time on MTV (and so I remember the day Amy died), I was intrigued with Rehab but not completely sold until YKING and by the time I heard Back to Black I think I was in love, damn is this an S tier album, so complete, so different from anything that was being done at the time. Funnily enough, the album actually losses power on the second half but it’s great nevertheless, I wish I could have seen her perform live, what a sad story. …Actually, my favorite song by her (help yourself) is not on this album, hope to see that one in here as well. I have the half speed master vinyl release, if you have the chance to get it do so, it’s miles ahead in quality than the standard version. Great album and great artist.
I have to give this a 5, her voice, sound, the throwback style but not too cheeky is perfect.
Really good voice, and an dilicious album to listen…
One of a kind. This was the most exciting album I heard that year. What a devastating talent she was. Combining brutally honest, explicit, but funny lyrics with a superbly produced retro-soul sound that you couldn’t ignore. Just absolutely brilliant.
This is such a modern classic by a real talent. I'm still disproportionately cross that The Klaxons won the Mercury Prize over this. Best song could be any of about 6, I'll go for Tears Dry On Their Own though
I really didn't want to play this again. It's one of those albums that you know inside out. It's in danger of spoiling the enjoyment through over familiarity. Abbey Road, Dark Side, Nevermind etc. I always skip Rehab anyway. No joke intended. Instead I tried to find something new here today. I played it on the AirPods, listening out for anything I've missed. There was the odd guitar riff buried deep in the mix. But it comes back to the songs and the voice. And for those reasons alone this has to be a five star album.
Absolute classic, beautiful songs, beautifully sung, in my opinion.
It's a 5 star!!! Well I'm already a massive Amy Winehouse fan so I knew that it was a 5 already but it was great to listen again for the purpose of rating it. It's such a brilliant album, the stories, the humour, her voice. It's a classic and I'm still so heartbroken hasn't gone on to make decades of classics
One of my top fave albums. A tour de force.
An album I can listen to all the way through with no skips.
Strong beautiful voice with retro music.
Very good, great at points, with such a sad story of the aftemath and the tragic loss of Amy. What a talent she was! A majestic album, which I find really hard to separate from its creator, and which is largely responsible for people thinking Mark Ronson was a production genius (rather than a bit of a one trick pony) As music, and an album, it is an absolute masterpiece
Classic!!
8,5 One of best to ever do it Gone too soon
This album was like fresh air. So unusual. So beautiful. Her voice is unforgettable
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: You know I’m no good, Back to black, Rehab, Tears dry on their own, He can only hold her
This is Amy Winehouse's magnum opus. It's also clear how much she was struggling with her addictions and relationships on this album. While most songs seem upbeat, they all have such dark undertones, especially knowing how Amy ended up. This, however, is a timeless album. Amy Winehouse is one of the biggest "What if's" in music history. Best Songs: Rehab, Back to Black, Tears Dry On Their Own, Some Unholy War Worst Songs: NA
This album is really good, I'd rate it either 9/10 or 10/10.
Yeah classic, no more to say
Amazing album. Her voice was one of a kind. Such a talent waisted. Can't help to think what could've been. Absolute banger!
This is my favourite album by my favourite artist and I do not think that there is a single album that could possible compete apart from maybe Frank.
A gorgeous and timeless album, not much more to say its just wonderful
Yes 5/5
Yea absolute banger
Absolutely iconic voice
Masterpiece
Great album, a seamless blend of soulful R&B with modern pop undertones
Brilliant album, not the least because her backing band is the Dap-Tones, they combine to make a magical album.
Great disk
She really did have such a beautiful voice
Absolute xlassix
Beautiful
9.5/10
Never gets old
love this album
Quelle voix, j'adore. La production de Mark Ronson est également superbe. Un excellent album.
What a fucking waste.
Made Blues and Jazz cool again.
Très bon album
ça sonne un peu comme l'automne
Try as I may, I couldn’t think of a reason to not give this one 5 stars. Great production, hypnotic vocals, and superb songwriting. She’s no Ronnie Spector, but she’ll do.
She had a wonderful voice, and poured her soul into writing and recording her songs. Too bad the demons got her. Assholes.
You can feel the heart ache in her songs as she writes about love, her abusive relationships and her addictions. The Dap-Kings and Mark Ronson’s production give it a very crisp modern Motown sound, but with a top-tier jazz vocalist at the micro phone. There are a handful of terrific, catchy songs that are destined to be played for a long time. Delving into reggae was not the greatest idea, but that small digression can be forgiven.
The has got everything; Drama, soul, anguish, hope and despair. The production is crystalline, the song writing inspired and the uplifting music nicely compliments her fabulous vocal. Her vocal style inspired and influenced a whole generation (so many have tried to emulate her). In short, this is timeless classic. It’s a crying shame there was no follow up album……
Classic
Classic album, much to enjoy.
Barely a shower goes by where I don't belt out a song or two from this album.
Not much to say. Love this album.
Oh… what could have been. If I could master the skill of turning my life's aches, pains, joy and dependance into verse as easily as Amy does on Back To Black, I would also be able to describe how monumental and touching her music is. Instead…
She had such a singular style and voice that is much missed
Amy Winehouse was the real deal.
Yeah this isn't my usual sort of music and reminds me of a strange time in my life. However her voice and tunes just work so well, not a perfect album but damn good.
I'm getting both Amy Winehouse albums on two consecutive days ... What are the chances? Anway ... I'm not the biggest Soul fan on the planet, but I can recognize quality when I hear it. This album is a huge step up from Amy's first collection. The style here is more soul than the preceding album's jazz/swing; in the style of 60's girl groups like the Ronettes and producers like Phil Spector. Every song is different here, and every one is a gem. The obvious monster hit is the title track, Rehab is also well known. But the album also shines in the more unknown numbers like Love Is A Losing game, which displays Amy's more vulnerable side. Iconic. 5/5
oh my god I fucking love amy wineehouse
One of the greatest of all time.
Great but maybe not as fantastic as I’ve been lead to believe. I had this one over the weekend, must have listened 5 times and grew to appreciate it more and more each time. There are some stand out tracks but it’s seems to finish just as it’s getting going. They really nail the genre, the production is spot on and she writes some very poetic lyrics. I think the over hype might come from her wild personality, which the British press couldn’t get enough of. They love to put people on a pedestal but love it even more when they inevitably fall off. But still, a brilliant album and I’m glad I finally got round to listening to it properly.
What a talent, what production, what songs, what heartfelt delivery - flawlessly done.
It’s Amy Winehouse
Great album and superb vocals, honestly. "You Know I'm No Good" and "Back to Black" were by far my favorites. 9/10
👍🏻
We lost her too soon
She made an instant classic with those soul sounds and sultry voice.
Good god I loved this album. I don’t think the Dap-Kings get enough credit for the pristine sound-gasm. This would be one of my 10 desert island albums.
A ridiculous talent and an incredible tragedy.
There is not one bad song on this album. Amy Jade Winehouse is on a different level vocally and lyrically and I loved the reggae, soul, doo wop and jazz especially hearing the traces of older black music whether it was interpolated or sampled. Best songs: Rehab, Addicted, Back to Black, Love is a Losing Game Fave songs: He Can Only Hold Her, Just Friends, Me and Mr. Jones She deserved album of the year and it was just 35 minutes of pure bliss. RIP Amy
Perfect
Addicted Back to the beginnings, as black and white as music can be, vintage. There’s such as periods of time in history, that all went at once in some band or artist itself, Amy is the voice of 2000s, perhaps the last one such as iconic as it was, plus the genre that influenced so many others after her. In your "I Told You I Was Trouble: Live In London" she can bring all the aesthetics from the 50s and 60s, (beside the fact that all of her drinks during the concert) which proves that she is a better artist live even than at studio. And if all of it wasn't enough, she did in less than 5 years, with your 2 albums, showing that both went in so many albums lists, hope that her legacy deserve more and more while time passes. A
Simply beautiful. I loved every track. Amy was a talented artist that we lost way too soon.
Hermoso album. La voz de Amy me pone la piel de gallina. Un tema mejor que el otro.
14th February 2022 Listened while working from home, we went to see Death on the Nile in the evening. Couldn’t think of anyone better to spend Valentine’s Day with than Amy. Could have chosen any one of these from this perfect album.
Album iconique sortie en 2006, Amy Whinehouse, prêtresse anglaise de la soul au destin tragique, livre un album puissant sur sa rupture amoureuse. Mélange de styles, une voix puissante, l’artiste nous livre un album très personnel.
Very nice
Músicas prediletas: -Rehab -You Know I`m no Good -Me & Mr. Jones -Back to Black -Tears Dry on Their Own -Love Is a Losing Game
Pedro scooby: Eu queria ter encontrado a amy winehouse assim, em um lugar privado, pra falar pra ela “pô, a vida é irada, vamo curtir!”
Wow, what talent as a songwriter, singer, recording artist, and performer. I happen to enjoy this style of music, and she absolutely commands it. Fantastic.
Just a great album mix of jazz, neo-soul and pop melodies. The lyrics showed that there were bigger issues behind these songs. You can only imagine what she could've achieved. Best Tracks: Rehab; You Know I'm Know Good; Tears Dry On Their Own
9/10 very good album
Love love love love her voice. 9/10
Such a great album, don’t know what else to say. Great artist, great album. Favourite songs: - You know I’m no good - Love is a losing game - Tears dry on their own
queen
Espetacular! Sonoridade absurdamente bela. Qualidade vocal incrível também.
Uma obra de arte que não precisa comentários.
This is my shit man. Plain and fucking simple. I love it.
One of the greatest of all time - dark, jazzy and soulful. RIP Amy.
Eye opener
