Reviews (page 12 of 14)

It sounds like if Rage against the machine tried to rap. I would have given it a 2, but listening to the whole album a few times ups it to a three. They get bonus points for their songs all sounding different. They lose points for sounding really dated. You might say they... SABOTAGED themselves xD

Typical beastie boys

I know, right? I just don't like it that much.

Not sure why I am having a hard time getting into this album. I think I want to like the Beastie Boys more than I actually do. Fine album overall, interesting sound but not one I could listen to very long for one time, but luckily they changed it a few times throughout

I wanted to like this and it was really fun for the first 30 minutes but it definitely got samey and the instrumental sections did not hold my attention. 6/10

it was aight, not rlly my style but aight ig.

3.5, couple of bangers and s lot of instrumental filler

Some great tracks (Sabotage my favourite of theirs), and shows their songs aren’t all comic munition.

I like the Beastie Boys, but this is definitely not their best album. There's some bangers here of course, like Sabatoge but there's quite a bit of filler on this album that didn't add anything. The sound is definitely dated, but there is still some novelty to it. Overall its pretty average, I know the Beastie Boys can do better.

Lyrical distortion: Not a fan. Favorite Tracks: Root Down Sabotage Get It Together "Transition Tracks"

I mean interesting but not great

Individual songs good, album as a whole became samey

I don't feel like this is their strongest outing. There are some great songs, there is also some flat monotony.

I had to power trough the first part. But the second part (sabotage and all after that were awesome).

Loved the challenging and protesting lyrics but 2 songs performed at Glastonbury 1994 was enough for my ear drums.

Interesting fusion of different musical styles. Will come back to this one

This album does have some of the Beastie Boys greatest hits. There sound is very unique and mix genres of rap, punk, rock, and blues. Sometimes incorporating classical string instruments. Would I want to own this full album? Probably not.

Liked Sabotage and Flute Loop the most, great hip hop album. Wasn't able t read lyrics like I would like to, need to revisit the album in order to get a better knowledge of it. 6/8 (NOT FINAL)

Too intense for a work day

i like the beastyboys sound but im not a fan of rap overal so i get bored after a while

Good time with this record.

So close to five, I'd say a four, makes me re-evaluate my 4 for licensed to ill, that should definitely be a 3

Kind of ok. Sure Shot is a fab, classic tune

The best songs were the instrumentals. Other than those, album didn’t resonate with me.

Would I listen again: no DNF around halfway through cause it was just getting a slog to get through and I knew it was just going to be more of the same. 2 stars because it wasn’t painful to listen to just repetitive and boring

Some high points instrumentally but I don’t love rap/rock fusions and the Beastie Boys have never really been for me

The instrumentals are actually interesting and the boys evidently put some effort into the lyrics this time around. Not enough to make me want to think much about their meaning. 2 because they show improvement and I can see how this might be considered influential

Day 1. Not for me at all, just sounds like noise. The jazz bits are cool tho.

Not my thing

🔴 (listened: 8/20) ; not really for me

The funky jazz instrumental is carrying way to much the album, not their voice

A couple songs were ok but most of it was terrible

Tento album ma ničím nenadchol. Vlastne mám rád len ich 1. album.

Not a big fan of the Beastie Boys. A few song are fun, but most of the time I think they are screaming

It was ok but not something I’d go back to

Not my fave but better than I anticipated.

Apart from Sabotage this very much blended together for me

Sabotage is lekker.

Didn't sound too bad, but everything was like a carbon copy of the previous song. Very boring to listen to.

I don't like the Beastie Boys much. I fucking love Sabotage though.

track 5 has a funky bassline; I never really been a fan of the yelling, matter-of-fact rap flow that Beastie Boys has for example (among other early rap groups); always love me a Q-Tip feature; not notable for me

Sabotage really carried this album.

Ambitious!

Kinda just loud rap or rock music.

I wanted to like this, I have fought for my right to party, but I could not do it 😐

A bit too agressive and fast. Didn't like the beats so much.

There's the his and then there's a lot of biting tracks. Some instrumentals and hardcore tracks. My problem with the Beasties has always been that they are not good rappers. They are cool, but this album ain't it.

It was fine. A little long (an hour). I only knew Sabotage. It was entertaining enough though.

Good not great

Sabotage is good, rest is average

Not as bad as I thought it would be but still gave up around half way

This is not my thing. It's got Sabotage, and it's not actively annoying in the middle, so it gets a 2.

Some nice riffs save it from a 1 star but they mostly quickly transform into something generic, also don't care for the voice.

We already had Paul’s Boutique. No need for anymore Beastie Boys. Too much jazz on this one, which goes less well with all the shouting. Sabotage is the only really good song.

Noisy and unresolved and boring. The rap is trash. 2/5

Ikke helt min stil

1. Sure Shot: Rapsito tranka, piola buen ritmo, medio under siento. 7,5/10 2. 3/10. 3. B-Boys Makin´ With The Freak Freak: sigue la misma linea pero no es tanto ruido. 4,5/10 4. Bobo On The Corner: No idea, medio transición/interludio. 5. 5/10 7. Get It Together: Mucho más flow, me gusta mucho más. 8/10 8. 5/10 14. Do It: Rapsito piolita tipo under. 4,5/10 15. 4/10

I don’t like this style of rap

not my music taste

Not my favorite. Reminds me of someone. It’s not horrible but this is music for annoying obnoxious white joys with entitlement complexes. The music is catchy though which is annoying! I would listen to this as an instrumental. The rapping is horrible.

Not a fan of this. Maybe if I was an edgy 20-year old still, but I'm past that point in my life.

I’ve always wanted to like the Beastie Boys. I’ve tried listening to them on many occasions but never really understood what all the fuss was about. Ill Communication is today’s listen, so I was curious to see if this would change my mind. I completely understand how important they are and how they were trying to do something different. Sabotage is a great tune, but as a whole I found the album quite a tough listen. It actually took me most of the day to get through the 20 tracks, even though the album only runs for about an hour. Overall, I thought it was just OK. Nothing really jumped out and made me think “what a great track.” As you might expect from early 90s hip hop, some of the lyrics also feel pretty dated and out of place today. Favourite tracks: Sabotage and Futterman’s Rule. Least favourite tracks: A lot of the album felt quite dull to me and didn’t really hold my attention. Album artwork: A cracking image and very recognisable.

"sabotage" is the hit off this album. Not sure if it redeems the rest of the screaming... Good for a workout I guess?

Enjoyed the first track, but the distorted yelling is just not for me in this case. I do like the instrumental tracks. Not sure if any/many of these will make any sort of rotation. The bass line on root down is fun!

A few songs are familiar and good, but as a whole sounds too repetitive

i don't like stuff like that

Some songs I liked but overall, not my kind of music

(largo)

aburrido

too noisy

Nerviges Album einer überbewerteten Combo.

I don't like hip hop

I find it a very consistent album, but that's precisely why I don't like it... Since almost all the songs sound exactly the same, sometimes I thought it was the same song, And it turns out there were several songs.

Okay so mixed emotions about this one. Having already known and enjoyed their songs from other albums (predominantly Paul's Boutique and Licensed To Ill), I often ignored touching this album. A combination of rowdy tracks and instrumentals made me feel lost to what direction they were headed. I guess maybe it's their experimental aspect? The rapping in this album lacked flair and felt like spoken words that rhymed for the sake of it. With "Get It Together" featuring Q-Tip being the only exception and him mostly carrying the majority of the track. The album gradually dragged on and became obscure. Personally, I wouldn't revisit this entirely but only listen to a few standout tracks.

I've never been able to listen to the Beastie Boys without feeling slightly annoyed and that is still the case in 2026.

Not bad, 'Sabotage' was a good track. I'm not into rap but I did like the instrumentals. Vocals were too yell-y for me. 'Sabrosa' was nice too even though I don't favor lyric-less tracks. 'The Update' also stood out as interesting to me. The rest of the album was a bit forgettable. I liked the final track too, 'Transitions'. All-in-all, I liked it but wouldn't really listen to the full album again anytime soon. 2/5

Not my music at all, most songs give me stress :-) . Some of the quieter, slower songs I liked more.

Better than the other album I had by them but I just don't care for the beastie boys.

I prefer Commodore 64 for my nerdcore listening pleasure.

Chund mer vor als würdet d Beastie Boys eifach mal is Mikrophon labere, egal wies usechund. Ned so miis

Nerviiig. —-> 2

Dogwater then. Dogwater now. Not a fan.

I've heard nonstop praise for the Beastie Boys ever since they first blew up, but after listening to Ill Communication, I'm just not seeing what all the hype is about. The album constantly jumps between totally different styles, punk, hip-hop, funk, instrumentals, and it ends up feeling disjointed and honestly pretty annoying to me. I actually preferred the instrumental tracks over the ones with vocals; they were the only parts that really held my attention. The one saving grace is 'Sabotage'. It's the sole reason this album gets more than a single star from me.

Wasn't bad but didn't do it for me. Diverse range of sounds though

Were they ill when making this?? I don’t like Beastie Boys. I mean the Yelling-Hiphop genre specifically is really hard for me to process. They’re actively ruining great beats and samples when yelling and screaming over the music, and that makes me want to yell. This was my first time listening to an album by Beastie Boys, but I already knew that this was going to be rough for me. Fortunately I found out only a couple of minutes before listening that this is more Jazz inspired, and that gave me hope. And while the Jazz is felt on some of the instrumentals, it isn’t present nearly enough to save the record. The Jazz influence didn’t even make all the instrumental songs good/“listenable”, only some of them! For an example I love “Sabrosa” and “Futterman’s Rule”, but “Shambala” feels like a knife in my h(ear)t. Some of the songs with lyrics like “Sure Shot” with its catchy chorus and great sample choice, “Get It Together” carried by Q-tip and its lovely atmosphere and “Alright Hear This” that works for a reason I probably won’t ever understand, are songs I actually like hearing. But most songs are sadly like “Flute Loop” which has a great name, but some terrible music, “Heart Attack Man” the worst song on the entire album, and “B-Boys Makin’ With The Freak Freak”: Heartbreaking💔. I am glad to have heard an album of Beastie Boys finally and I did feel like my tolerance for them grew during my listening. I give this a 5/10. I would also like to reccomend this to fans of Limp Bizkit. Thank you for reading my review, I hope best for you.

Was too loud and angry for me. With odd interludes

Note: I’m neither an expert or fan of rap. It seems like a bad idea to add lots of echo and static to rap vocals. Granted, what I could discern, though well rhymed, was better unheard. Mercifully, there were a few instrumentals. They were quite good. Everything else… Not so much.

Not my kind of things - I think first half was better than second half, kinda dropped off into background music

Hugely influential. Love the musical interludes showcasing some instrumental prowess. Too many though. Too much filler.

1 star (kill me now) because simply I didn’t like it….another star bc guitar was good and I can understand people who do enjoy beastie boys, just now me? Does that make sense

Only a few good songs the rest is just...noise to me but I get why its important

Bit too shouty for me

Never been a fan of Beastie Boys lyrical style but the album overall is not bad, it’s got good sampling and a consistently strong hiphop beat and i like Qtips feature.

good rap album

Some interesting songs. Not a fan and I know this wasn't their best release.

its cool but meh, found some interesting songs but idk actually i think some songs would be great as soundtracks for a spy film

nice beats honestly , and there was this one song that was all instrumental it was nice. I feel like if listened a little more and gave it a chance maybe I'll like it? But I dont resonate with the lyrics it's like analogies to things I don't know. But it was intresting 3/5

sabotage

I appreciate their talent but this hip hop/rap is not for me, and out of all their albums on this list, I enjoyed this the least. Also, the album is too long by at least 15 minutes.

The Shouty Boys have never been my thing.

I like some of their songs, but this album was not my fav

"sabotage" is the hit off this album. Not sure if it redeems the rest of the screaming... Good for a workout I guess?

its a 2 for me

Unfortunately, I am not a beastie boys fan… three songs in - didn’t realize it had switched songs - committed to finished the album, but not really looking forward to it. They just all sound the same. Looking at the lyrics, they’re pretty good sometimes, I just can’t get behind how they’re sung. I liked The Update, and their instrumental stuff isn’t bad, I just can’t get over the vocals. Several songs have genuine deep means which I think is cool, but then they follow it up with putting your dih in mashed potatoes? 2.6/5

The instrumental jazz/funk rock tracks are very nice to listen to but I just couldn’t stand the rest of the tracks. The album just wasn’t my vibe. 2/5

Diff kind of rock but ok

The Beastie Boys are not my band. I couldn't force myself listening to yet another of their records.

It didn’t communicate with me

Never have been a fan of hip-hop, and unfortunately this was no different. I do enjoy the slick punches the lyrics pack in, and the clear funk sounds. Honestly, the production is really nice, because it straddles the line of being drowning out the vocals and not pretty well. Maybe if I revisit this a few years into the future I’ll feel differently. Maybe.

Scuzzy sound production. The audible bits were decent

Not my type of music but I do like the loops in most of the tracks. Sabotage was probably my fave with the guitar melody. Not to sound like an old person but some of these tracks just were a lot of noise that was a bit much for me (could be though that I was listening on a plane and there's already so much noise) I probs would have loved this album at 19, less so now

Couldn’t even finish this album So overstimulating omg So loud and there’s so much going on it honestly gave me a headache The epitome of white boy rap but feels like Michael Scott with the bandana could’ve made this shit.

crazy ramba zamba, but too rough for me to really like it

I'm Surprised how different this album sounds from Licensed to Ill. Sounds like Tough Guy are short but show a different side to the Beastie Boys. That being said it's nowhere near as good an album as Licensed to Ill.

instrumentally pretty great, just not a fan of the shouty vocals. 2/5

Geht so

what is happening

i loved the instrumentals but in general not really my thing sadly faves: sure shot and bodhisattva vow

Oh dear

I like sabotage

This is a lengthy introduction to Beastie Boys and it brought me through several genres and sounds that I did not expect. I found several of the interludes quite enjoyable, as well as my favorite track “Get It Together.” I enjoyed the incorporation of unconventional sounds and the emphasis on the bass and flute (I’m biased as a former flute player). Overall, it is a solid piece of work, but I didn’t fully connect with it and I’m not sure I would listen to it again.

I like the Beastie Boys’ hits—Sabotage, Hey Ladies, all those songs. The only full album I’ve listened to is Paul’s Boutique, and I hated it. I know it’s objectively pretty good but I just can’t stand it. Just makes me think of annoying frat bros. It’s the type of music Kyle would play during the beer pong tournament. This one definitely begins more enjoyably. Sure Shot is a pretty good opener and Tough Guy is really good; I have a soft spot for punk. Same with Heart Attack Man. The transition between Bobo on the Corner and Root Down is pretty good, but then the rest of Root Down is just…annoying. I can’t stand it. I was just waiting for it to end. The lyrics are so cringy and awful. And I get it—party band or whatever. But there’s a reason I don’t like frat bros. Sabotage definitely redeems that somewhat. It’s a great song. Super catchy, and also I’ve just heard it on the radio so much I can’t hate it. Get it Together is much less annoying because it doesn’t overuse that super aggressive, processed vocal style. It’s actually a pretty good song. But also tf you mean she’s the cheese and you’re the macaroni. I know Ad-Rock is a great guy and the Beastie Boys have done some great activism and stuff, but still, how did that man get Kathleen Hanna to marry him. Sabrosa is a good track—mostly because it’s just some good instrumentals without anything annoying over it. Same with Futterman’s Rule. The instrumental tracks give it some time to breathe and breaks up some of the repetitiveness. The Update is also pretty awesome. Eugene’s Lament and Flute Loop have great production. I think as long as the song was instrumental, I loved it. If it had lyrics or that awful, repetitive rapping style, it was more of a toss up. I’m kind of inclined to like this album because I try really hard to not hate Beastie Boys, and I know they are pretty creative. But please, I really didn’t need to hear about your love for mashed potatoes. I wish this album was just all the instrumental tracks, the two punk songs, and Sabotage—maybe Sure Shot, Get it Together, Bodhisattva View, and The Update can stay, too. And with the vocal style, I definitely don’t mind aggression—I love punk and grunge and hardcore—but this just seems like aggression for the sake of just yelling everything to seem edgy or cool or whatever. And I get it—it’s rap rock, it combines the two vocal styles—but bands like Rage Against the Machine did it a lot better. And I know you can’t compare the two all that well because of the differences in thematic priorities, but the points on technique still stand for the most part. I’m glad this album exists and I know it’s objectively good, but half of it is annoying and repetitive as hell.

It’s really not for me

I feel like every album has a few absolutely perfect songs and the rest a bit of filler. Great hooks though.

Sabotage aside easily the less of the two other Beastie Boys albums on this list

Cover 5 A while back, maybe two years ago, I actually listened to their entire discography, inspired by the podcast Every Album Ever. EAV is two hosts that listen to an entire discography and then discuss the artist and each album. They rate the best and worst and personal favorites. I found that I actually like The Beastie Boys. Some of their best songs are not radio hits. If you judged solely from their radio hits, you're missing out on a lot. This album is not their best, though. Paul's Boutique is actually pretty amazing but like this album can be too long for it's own sake (and it's first track, To All the Girls is not only laughably misogynistic, it's just not very good). This one's ok, even though Sabotage is one of their best (funnest?) songs. Still, there's a lot on here to consider, including the fact it's an hour-long album. So much of this album is self indulgent and drags the album, especially the second half. Actually more than that. The last two-third, almost everything after Get it Together. This could have been a much better album had they removed six or so songs. It really is about twenty to twenty five minutes too long. That said, there are some good songs, including Sabotage, a favorite of mine, but the majority of the album is so much filler.

Very surprised by my own rating.

When listening to an album, you want to be able to listen to it from start to finish. I found myself skipping halfway through most songs. I will note, one of their better songs Sabotage is on this album, so it’s not a full loss.

Nein, das ist nicht meine Musik.

Totally fine and bearable when they shut the fuck, high 2 low 3 Fav song: Futterman's Rule maybe

a lot of ...screaming? Highlight: Sabotage (second half)

Some classics but some absolutely unlistenable garbage.

The funk instrumentals were nice, the hip-hop songs (especially directly into the microphone) - not so much. Not exactly my thing, to be precise.

I’m not convinced that if sabotage hadn’t such a great video that there wouldn’t be as much attention on them. Something about them grates on me a little - don’t like the pseudo shouting rapping, and although I appreciate the blend between rap and more punk/rock instrumentation, just isn’t my thing.

Čudan mix žanrova a ništa konkretno. 2/5, 4/10

I kind of liked an instrumental track on this album, but I guess I'm just not into this kind of hip hop.

Sabotage is a jam, but a jam I’ll probably never put on myself. Some other cool songs on here but also a bunch of crap. It is kind of interesting to see all the variety on this record. Too long though.

1. zhot - 1.5 2. guy -0 3. freak - 1.5 4. Bobo - 0 5. Root - 1.5 6. Sabotage -2.5 7. Get - 1.5 8. Sabrosa -1 9. Update -1.5 10. Rule - 1 11. Hear - 1.5 12. Lament -1.5 13.flute - 2 14. Do - 0 15. Theme - 1.5 16. heart - 1.5 17. zcoop - 1.5 18. zhambala - 1 19. Vow - 1 20. Transitions- 1.5

20 songs is too many. Some I enjoyed but ultimately not my thing

why would I choose to listen to this? it's fine.

Well, I of course have heard a few Beastie Boys songs before this. My least favorite of the bunch was always Sabotage. Hearing the whole album this song is on makes it make much more sense. I did not enjoy this at all. Why so many instrumental tracks? Also, why do they feel the need to say their rapper names in every verse? I know who you are by now, Ad Rock. The song with Q-Tip was fine. I thought more favorably of the Beastie Boys an hour ago.

I've never been a fan of beastie boys idk it's a me problem

Pleasantly surprised a few times during this album.

Nada con hip hop será mi regla. Si señor.

Not for me. Too much shouting.

Thought I would enjoy this more, the rap songs were the best, punk rock songs sounded juvenile.

Jazz interludes were interesting but the rest doesn't work for me

Pakko antaa vaan kaks tähtee ku punkki on paskaa :D

Ei se ihan lähteny lentoon. Instrumentaalit oli levyn paras anti.

Shambala on kova kurkkulaulubiisi.

Välillä tulee vähän Rage Against the Machine mieleen, niissä melkein levyn parhaat hetket.

(2) i liked some of the instrumentals but wasn’t a massive fan on the whole

Again I think just not for me. I think as an album it’s more of a sonic vibe and experience than it is a cohesive collection of songs. Instrumentally I think there are some great moments, specifically Eugene’s Lament.

Sabotage is a banger but I surprisingly didn't like most of the other songs. I liked the instrumentals though.

Musically, I think this is relatively well constructed with a few interesting things going on. However, I don’t see any evidence of the finesse other reviewers seem to find in either the lyricism or the vocal delivery. It’s just … not very good.

Noisy noise

Standout Songs: Sabotage Alright Hear This

How did they convince people they were good

Det var bättre förr. Beastie Boys var också bättre förr.

Not for me.

Definitely not for me but I’ve heard worse.

look. i love the energy. i love the ideas. i love how its messy as hell. its just not for me

Nää uudenvuodenpuheet ei vaan kelpaa.

Joo. Ei nää edelleenkään kuulu mun kataloogiin vaikka uranuurtajia ovatkin olleet

Their fourth album. Hip Hop / Rock / Punk / Rap. It's a busy fucking album. Sabotage is a cool track, it also happens to have one of the best music videos of all time. Good production on the album. This is a solid album for sure. It's just that, for me, it had one stand out track and then a bunch of ... meh !

I am not a fan of rap and this album by the BBs seems to contain all the genres of music I hate. Hardcore punk? Jazz-Funk? Rapcore ? No, thank you. With so many songs on this album they all blurred into one big noise.

N word confirmed

As far as hip-hop goes, this is a fun album. Tough to the ears with so much shouting and longer than I'd prefer, but diverse and tasteful in motives and samples (espetially in the second half) enough to provide a good experience for a non hip hop fan. Best tracks: instrumental ones.

This is one of those albums where they made rap music that was just a bunch of words and the beat repeats forever in the background. I am not a huge fan of that, I think possibly because that slightly predates me, but instead I prefer the rap songs that have a more melodic vibe. Overall, not a bad album, but I am just not that excited about it.

While a great album for the Beastie Boys, it was a mediocre example of the hip hop scene at that time. Gang Starr’s Hard to Earn, Jeru the Damaja’s The Sun Rises in the East, and Organized Knofusion’s Stress are arguably better representations of mid-90s East Coast hip hop.

My concept of what Beastie Boys is was skewed. Was not expecting riff tracks. Sabotage is THE Beastie Boys song.

Q-Tip is the best part of this. the hardcore punk callbacks to their roots are cool. the jazz-funk is not. i don't really care for the Beastie Boys despite their importance, unfortunately deserves to be one of the 1001? probably not compared to their first two, which are also on the list

This is a tough one. I love the instrumentals on this album. There's so much variety. So many great beats and style switch-ups and catchy little bits. They use some very inventive samples and cool live instrument bits. It's all genuinely great. And kept me entertained for the full hour. But holy shit, i hate them as rappers. Their flow is like a woodpecker hammering my eardrum until there's nothing left but a bloody socket. Especially when they're trading off lines between the 3 of them... that shit is cursed. It's so fucking annoying. It feels like a lonely island sketch, in a bad way. I honestly think i'd rather listen to sandberg do his beastie boys impression than the real thing. Their flow is terrible and repetitive. I don't get it. I know they're known for being influential new york rappers, but honestly the tracks where they go in a rock direction and do more singing/shouting, are wayyyy better. The hardcore tracks on this are highlights. Even sabotage with it's sing-song rap style works so much better (and i am so sick of this song, but vocally it was a highlight). Anything that deviates from their horrible dated 90s rip rippety rap flow, is a welcome change to my ears. I honestly wish there was an instrumental version of this record. ORRRR i think a bunch of better rappers should take the instrumentals from this album and do something else with them. I think there is potential for a great rap record here... you just need to mute the beastie boys. But damn... they are good producers. They should be making beats for other rappers.... anyone other than themselves. It's honestly crazy that they are seen as great rappers. i don't get it. I know they started as a hardcore punk band... maybe they shoulda stuck to that lane. I think they're pretty good at it. But sadly that's not the universe we live in. Highlights: Tough Guy - hardcore track Sabotage - reluctantly it's good Sabrosa - cool instrumental The Update - a track with rapping i actually liked. It had a different slower vibe and flow. I enjoyed it. Reminded me of a ween track. Futterman's Rule - another cool instrumental Eugene's Lament - cool weird experimental string based instrumental Heart Attack Man - cool hardcore punk track - they're good at this style. it's abrasive but catchy. Shambala - i like the gregorian chant sample? Neat. Low-lights: Any track where they rapped a lot.

I like sabotage and nothing else about this album. Not my thing

Honestly, this sounds like a collection of B-sides dropped from other projects. No cohesion ordirection; jazz rap, funk, punk, psychedelic jams, chanting, 90s hip hop... The list goes on. None of it is particularly bad, but the song Sabotage isn't able to keep this whole album afloat. 2/5

Gee man I sure love instrumental tracks in my rap album. Legendary hits from this band but their albums ooze with filler.

License to kill is just a better album. Sabotage is a banger though

Time to go make some mashed potatoes.

Never again

sin inter´s para mi.

I understand the significance of this album. But this sounded quite messy these days, blend of old-school boombap and punk.

My boyfriend loves it - not my kind of thing but I can appreciate the vibe!

I love the two singles on this album, but the rest just doesn't do it for me.

Not my style

Felt less groundvreaking than the 84

1994 produced Emperor's genre-defining record "In the Nightside Eclipse", and yet here we are with another cheesy Beastie Boys album. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

I like the instrumentation and many of the samples are interesting, but I really don't like the vocals at all. I've had to skip through some tracks. I like the instrumental tracks quite a lot though. Overall I would not listen to the album again.

Favorite track: Get it together. Overall score: 3,4/10

J - 2/5 Best Track - "Sabotage" F - 1/5

This is of my era but not a genre I've ever enjoyed. I thought the nostalgia factor might carry me through but this wasn't much fun to sit through.

Sabotage is a banger, but this genre has never been for me.

The latest exhibit of Americans just trying a little to hard to prove how fun they are. The album had its moments so it's a high 2 but I did get bored

Sabotage is a five star track, one of the coolest guitar songs of the nineties. The rest of this is mehh to me.

Sabotage was familiar, not liked

Love the artwork - was interested to read more about the photographer and especially his Brooklyn Gangs photoshoot. Off the wiki: “Although Davidson had not heard the Beastie Boys' music and did not understand it once he did—he later recalled thinking it sounded like a "secret language" when they sent him a demo tape” I very much agree. I think it’s probably good I just don’t really like it - and the less rapping the better.

Not that great

They should have communicated what type of mid this album is.

Enjoyed this one more than Licensed to Ill -- enjoyed the music even if the vocals still isn't anything I'm interested in. 2.5 stars

I wouldn’t call myself a Beastie Boys fan, but I do have a lot of respect for them and they’ve obviously been very influential in the industry. I like their hits, but I didn’t recognize any of these songs when I scrolled through this. Overall, I’m completely indifferent to this album. It’s not bad, but I just have zero feelings either way about it and it didn’t elicit any emotions from me when I was listening to it. It is completely different from what I expected from a Beastie Bots album though. It was more eclectic and jazzy and it had more layers than most of their other songs. But not a single one was distinguishable from the other. I just… did not care about this the entire HOUR it was on. I wouldn’t listen to it again, but I wouldn’t turn it off.

God, I can’t stand the Beastie Boys. -Get it Together isn’t so bad, but I think it’s because someone else is on the track. -Sabrosa is funky, I dig it. I like the music on some of these tracks, but I can’t handle the vocals. This album ain’t for me. 2.5 Stars

Pretty mid, only liked the first song.

Bit of a disjointed album, don't hate it but not my thing, only really enjoyed sabotage.

ashamed to say I just don't get beastie boys. They've released some phenomenal tracks but their albums are such a slog to get through

Once upon a time I was a fan of the Beasties. I went hard for Licensed to Ill when it came out, and I stuck with them through Check Your Head. And then suddenly ... I was done. Chalk it up to the nasal delivery and overuse of vocal effects, the lingering echoes of their past juvenilia, and especially their commercial and cultural ubiquity as the '90s wore on. It felt like you couldn't get away from these guys for a while there. As for Ill Communication, I like the instrumentals, their sampling and mixing reflect skill, and it's always cool to hear Q-Tip and Biz Markee guest rap. I think I just really don't like them as rappers. IIRC we've so far had just three (?) hip hop releases on this list, and the Beastie Boys are worthy of two slots?

Okay now I know what the BB sound is all about. I think that was a goat in track 3 and, note to self, do not have any mashed potatoes at any pot luck dinners these guys might have.

2/5 Beastie Boys to have som good tracks, but unfortunatelly except Sabotage, they arent on this album.

I get that they're influential, but I just can't stand the screaming. The samples and beats are great though, would probably give it a 4 if it was an instrumental album.

“Eat a Scooby Snack and take a disco nap” makes me want to rate this a 5 Sounds like white RunDMC but they’re still using the N word? The 90’s man, what a time.

Hmm. This is good, but I think I'm starting to realize that I don't really like hip-hop. Sabotage is great, but that's because it's their most rock song. Am I old? Or not old enough? 2

Not my favorite album from them. 2/5

This is ok. It doesn't really do anything better or that much different from the other Beastie Boys albums on this list, although it does include one of the group's most well known songs, "Sabotage". Key tracks: Sure Shot Sabotage

I'm a big hiphop fan and some of the tracks here were good but overall it wasn't for me and just hard to get into.

Another generic HipHop album.

this shits cheesy

- Old school hip-hop, rock, and jazz - Beats are groovy - The fully instrumental songs are a nice addition/balance out the more raucous vocal ones - Can be jarring and obnoxious at times

Ok but not usually my style. Still was better than I thought initially. I recognized some of the songs.

Lots of variety that leaves me feeling mixed. I enjoyed the punk tracks on this more than anything else. Overall didn't change my opinion on these guys. 2.5/5

I do not like the Beastie Boys. This is the best album I've heard from them, however. Good beats, I just can't get past the annoying schoolboy rapping

Sure Shot is favorite song on this listen. BB has dialed in their white boy rap with rock roots sound and have definitely matured. I get why they'd want features on the album but when Q-Tip came on "Get It Together" it made me realize how grating the Beastie Boys are for a full album listen whereas your could listen to Q-Tip read the phonebook

It's not even that I dislike the style – more that I keep waiting for Andy and Jorma to pop up with their nautical-themed pashmina afghans...

Listen up y’all it’s a boring ass album with like one good track

Ill Communication feels like an album caught between wanting to be loose and wanting to be important, and never quite succeeding at either. There is energy here, sure, but it is scattered and unfocused, jumping from punk riffs to hip hop beats to instrumental detours without ever settling into a coherent identity. Instead of sounding adventurous, it often comes across as restless, like a band throwing ideas at the wall and assuming the attitude alone will hold it together. The biggest problem is how inconsistent and padded it feels. For every track that hints at something sharp or fun, there are several that feel half-finished or indulgent, especially the instrumental pieces that drain momentum rather than build atmosphere. The humour, once a strength, often lands flat here, stuck between juvenile jokes and self-aware irony, neither of which hits particularly hard. When the group leans into political or social commentary, it feels well intentioned but blunt, lacking the wit or bite needed to make it stick. What ultimately drags Ill Communication down is that it feels too pleased with its own chaos. There is no real flow, no emotional arc, and very little that lingers once it is over. It is not a disaster, and there are flashes of personality and groove that remind you why the Beastie Boys mattered, but flashes are not enough to carry an album this long. Two out of five feels right, not because it has nothing going for it, but because it never quite earns the attention it so loudly demands.

Ei vieläkään oikein tipu beastie boys. Jos olis puolet lyhyempi, vois kolmosen antaa mut kakkoseen jää.

It is indeed "Ill communication" if you keep on shouting to someone. When the beastie boys don't yell it is quite nice from time to time. So what would be the average of very deep lows and some good samples?

Doesn't appeal to me at all, 2 stars or D-.

Nöd so mis. Au kes highlight oder so. Immerhin de stil durezoge und soöppis wienes overarching konzept erchenbar.

I keep listening to them and keep not “getting” the Beastie Boys. Most of their stuff feels like really good novelty songs. Then there’s the great stuff, like Sabotage on this album, but even that feels a bit over the top.

2 sterne

I grew up around the Beastie Boys. I was a young kid watching them fight for their right to party in MTV. By the time I hit high school, everyone was listening to sabotage. And I still don’t get it. This album like their other album is not good. They have one or two good listens per album and the rest is a mess of painful garbage. I didn’t get it then and I don’t get it now. 2

Not for me

Not for me

Recorded music is now 100 years old. You can make a strong case that there are 1,000 acts that have recorded music over that time that every music lover should hear before they die. In that context, we have three albums (at least) from the Beastie Boys on this list?? Paul's Boutique belongs. It's mind-blowing. Licensed to Ill...OK...it's historically important and pretty great. But that's where their representation should end. This album is fine. A couple of great radio-classic hits; some latin-funk jams that are fun, though a pale reflection of the 70s recordings they are imitating. And it falls off from there (and goes on and on and on.) I like Check your Head better. But neither is among the 1,000 albums everyone should hear before they die.

No doubt completely missing the cultural significance of the Beastie Boys, but just not my bag.

Sabotage absolut.

It was ok. I liked the instrumental songs with no lyrics quite a lot. I didn't listen to the album fully but i didn't really vibe with it. The lyrics were often uninteligable and loud and screamy.

Not my vibe tbh but it seemed ok. Some good songs

It's alright.

Sabotage rips and overall kinda meh, did enjoy some of the funky/jazz moments but didn't really stick with me. More like a 2.5

The kids liked it, for me too rough and unmusical

Never heard the album before & actually enjoyed it tbh. Have to listen to more of them.

Oh my god it’s a mirage the beastie boys have never been good

About twize as large as an album should be. This might have been influencial, but SHOULD it have been? I'm not sure.

Niet echt de vibes

The album is 20 tracks long. It contains a handful of bangers, a couple songs that are just punk noise and a more-than-comfortable amount of pretentious instrumental tracks. I do enjoy the Beastie Boys in small serving sizes… they were driving me nuts by the end of the album! (maybe they were daring the listener to finish the album?!?) High 2 (saved from a 1 by that handful of bangers)

Interesting beat choices/instrumental stuff are the only thing holding the vocals and lyrics from leaping headfirst into a 1 star rating. Barely 2/5

buh. I have nothing with the Beastie Boys.

mid as fuck

"Sabotage" is good, but I can't tell you a single thing that happened in this album other than that and the Q-Tip song. Hard to get the Beastie Boys if you never grew up with them, I guess.

When the highlights are the cameos and the instrumentals...

Overrated east-coast twits with nary a decent nor useful thought between the lot. Smoke this rubbish, and pay the boys their money.

Groan, not for me. The best listen was Get it Together and it was Q Tips part not the actual group. Idk their vocals are just so nasally. Not my vibe

Totalement inconnu.

1/20, 5%

A bit less loud and shouty, I enjoyed this a bit more than the previvous Beastie Boys albums. Still not my favourite, but a bit better.

Boh sì

I forgot to REVIEW THIS and what do you KNOW here these BOYS have slightly altered their FLOW but it's not ENOUGH to make me CARE wanted 3 stars? you're still NOT THERE music: hated. (⌐■_■)

It's just not my style, have really been trying to like beastie boys. But it just doesnt hit me

Not my genre, but some cool tracks here and there

My favourite song by Beastie Boys "Sabotage" is on this record. This, combined with how much I liked "License to Ill" meant I was looking forward to listening to this record. However, I was a bit dissapointed. It often felt like i was listening to a bunch of instrumental samples. None of the samples stood out as particularly interesting. The vocals range from rock to jazzy to hip hop and were ok but again nothing grabbed me. When "Sabotage" came on I was as hyped as ever. It really is a great song. The rest of the album I can leave behind though.

Some good parts and ideas, but this is all over the place, and lacks cohesion. This is way too long for what feels like throwing things to a wall and see if it sticks.

So today I learned I am not a Beastie Boys mega fan. I like their singles and radio releases but as a whole album...it's not my favorite. I must rate this 2 stars. My child of the 90's card has been revoked and is being returned to the appropriate authorities via snail mail.

There is just something in the voices of the boys that pushes me away. Not much of a fan, but they don't deserve 1 star.

I was surprised by some moments in the album where I enjoyed the samples, but overall the eclecticism of sound and rapping came off more chaotic to me and felt like a cacophony of songs. It could have a lot better with major editing because I do like the pink sound, rap and the jazzier samples coming together at points. On B Boys Makin’ with the Freak Freak: “Mike D with the vinyl with the grooves so rare, and the rhymes that we’re kicking are doo doo” - self awareness?

Didn't like them a few days ago. My opinion hasn't changed. Rap is NOT music.
