A live album is rarely a good introduction to an artist.
This was not a good introduction to Johnny Cash. This feels like a mediocre bootleg of a Johnny Cash performance.
Didn’t do loads for me but his patter is quite amusing and clearly he can turn a tune. Can’t see myself coming back here again.
The atmosphere at St. Quentin seems to have been really good. Johnny Cash also seemed to have had a lot of fun. And I would have liked to have had the same with the album. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in this kind of country music. 2/5
Some alright parts, but I think this album really reminds me why I don't like country. Even with that in mind, I just don't find the music all that fresh or compelling.
I could take it or leave it. There's a lot of banter and crowd noise, which I think is the point, but I wouldn't really just sit and listen to this. No hate on the music though. Fav tracks: N/A
Never really listened to Cash, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel, but I don't like live albums much... And I think I would have given this a 3 if not live. I was just getting tired of the talking and cheering. I don't mind that in person or on video, but audio only its never been my thing.
His personality shines through in this live record. Enjoyed the strut-worthy setlist
I know this live album recorded in a real prison was groundbreaking, but I can only listen to Johnny Cash in small doses.
I'll need to check it out again
horrible recording.
Does Johnny Cash not know how to tune his guitar? I found this kind of boring. Most of Johnny Cash's music is kind of samey but at least the studio recordings for some reason feel more exciting. This bland live performance of his kinda bland music and his bland speaking voice just weren't interesting to me. I just realized I've never listened to "A Boy Named Sue" all the way through.
Je préfère d'autres albums a lui
Never liked live albums, still don’t
Not a huge fan
is country
get the man some water!
Live albums are rarely good and this is not an exception. Love Johnny tho
I'm honestly just not a huge Johnny Cash fan. I don't love his style of music, and I didn't like the parts of his personality that were showing when he was talking. I also just generally don't love live albums unless they are really well done. I can't deny that he and his band were talented, but this album wasn't for me.
Can't stand live albums. Extra point for Johnny Cash. Expected Marc rating: 4
Heard of Johnny Cash but not the album. Country from 1969. Had to listen to a live album. It’s not terrible but not really my vibe - he’s a bit annoying in the live bits too.
Some decent stuff in here, Johnny's songs all kinda sound the same structure wise and it's more about his stories and his philanthropy. Lost points for the record being censored as he said cuss words at literal prisoners.
Too much applause.
Oddly short album, and he repeated the title track. Plus a lot of between-songs chatter, so the actual music content is very thin. Not sure why this exists.
Dad:”there are way better Johnny cash albums than this”
This music doesn't do much for me but it's fun hearing the audience in this one and the guy clearly has a commanding stage presence. Standout Track: San Quentin
I do not like country music at all, it’s an easy 1/5 for me, but Johnny is an exception. What isn’t an exception are live sets, I honestly don’t think they have a place here.
Excited when this popped up, but honestly a bit disappointing. Really short runtime, about 30% of which is him chatting to the audience. Once song inexplicably appears twice in a row. The duet is cringy. The good songs end too early. Surely he's had better albums than this. Boy named sue brings this up to 2.5*
Great band, origin of the version of Boy Named Sue we all know. Not a well, structured album, and not a well structured show.
Appreciate the idea of the album. Wouldn’t listen to it again. Favorite part is the interlude between songs.
Not really into country, musically not very impressive, but the way he interacts and captures his audience is a whole show. Love the comedic act in between songs.
All songs sound the same somehow
peak johnny cash, cowboy campfire music
OK
Can’t get past the very poor audio. I understand that a liver album from 1969 isn’t going to have great audio, and I understand this albums historical significance. I really enjoyed the stage banter.
BEEEEEEP
Country music for people that don't like country music!
2/5 didn't like its live aspect
If Americans had invented reggae.
Johnny cash is boring to me, never understood it
If there's something I enjoy even less than live albums it's country music. It's just not my thing. Sorry. It was okay but it sounds all the same.
Kinda slap but it’s pretty painful to listen to a live album of an artist you don’t know or care about
Pretty fun. I’ve listened to Folsom Prison Blues a few times before and liked it. Other than that the album wasn’t that special. More monologue than music too. Probably would have been way better actually listening to this live
I've never listened to a full Johnny Cash album. Something tells me this was not the one to start with. While his connection with the crowd is undeniable, I wasn't really drawn in by the tunes, and the recording sounds kinda shit. I look forward to checking out his other more well-regarded stuff. This one's a skip for me.
Historical live album is still just a live album.
definitely one of the albums of all time. idk it was kinda underwhelming, each individual song was shorter or worse than the album version, but its cool to hear something recorded 50 years ago in a prison, and I played folsom p. blues with a band so little bit of nostalgia there. overall kinda boring, but nothing was unlistenable or harsh, so 2/5.
Johnny Cash is not a good singer. He constantly sounds like he's about to cry. His wife is worse. Boy Named Sue was amusing, but I could have lived without listening to this album.
Contender for the first ever podcast rather than an album and whilst the voiceover is interesting the first time heard, for me it gets somewhat tedious on repeat listens. Obviously Walk the Line is a classic, but that's about the only high point for me
What the ... how many prison albums does this guy have... I mean - do you need more than 1? You do not. The "At Folsom Prison" album is pretty great but this one musically isn't nearly as enticing. Two (consecutive!) versions of the same song is really ... yeah, say it: it's stupid. OK admittedly there's something fascinating about listening to it all play out in real time - the inmates are asking for the same song ("San Quentin" of course) again and at the same time that it's interesting hearing the raw as-it-was aspect of it, just fade out after the request for the album. FILLER MATERIAL! (it's not even a good song) eh just wasn't into it, even though it might be interesting watching a video of the entire proceeding if this wasn't "JOHNNY CASH™" I'd absolutely not have given it as much a chance as I did, he doesn't even sound particularly good singing or playing. Pass. 4/10 2 stars.
Akateemisesti puhuen tästä puuttuu "uusi kontribuutio": hyvät biisit on kuultu, vankilakeikka on kuultu. Kyllä tämän silti kuuntelee.
Heard before: some I'd listen to 37 minutes of Johnny Cash talking to inmates any day. Unfortunately, his compelling rapport is interrupted by uninspired performances and repeated songs. Even A Boy Named Sue, the hit, sounds improvised, an off the cuff moment of fun during a record that sounds like a career move. There might be a good album to be made from this concert, but this is slight and disappointing. Top tracks: A Boy Named Sue, Starkville County Jail (with the intro, annoyingly on the previous track), San Quentin (the first one, not the reprise)
Performance in a state prison? Was that a thing those days? Anyhow, prime country music. There is beautiful synchrony in the duet with his wife. All the tracks are on the same 4 beats, sometimes slow sometime fast. This is a case of when lyrics win in the music vs lyrics battle
This is a live album and thus I am not listening to it. like an auto 2/5
Listening to this album for the first time since 2019. It's fine, I've never been a huge Johnny Cash fan, but the album is enjoyable. He comes across as witty and charming. The songs are ok, the performance is decent. Just not my thing really. Between a 2 and a 3
Wanted Man // I Walk The Line
Can’t really understand the need for it
Johnny Cash will always be a legend but for me personally I am not a fan of live albums.
Cash knows how to energise the crowd, but I still can't say I like the music (or the awful recording quality).
I listened.
Good
Nope
Ana no llores porfi.
Never been a fan of Johnny Cash though I do like one song from this album, “A Boy Named Sue” and even then this one song I give it 3* and 2 for the whole album.
3.5 stars for the stories and experience of the prison audience, 2 for the music. The duet with June was good
For idea
I don't usually like live albums and this one didn't change my mind. Johnny Cash does a lot of chatting in between the songs which just took me out. Cash is obviously a great musician but I didn't care for this live album. Highlight of the album was "San Quentin".
Second "Live from prison" Johnny Cash album we've had recently
Proper country
What I really liked about this album was all the banter between songs. Very interesting idea going to a prison. Johnny seems to get of on it and talks as though he's in there with them. As for the music was ok he has a few crackers and I like his dark lyrics and gravel like vocals. Altough country music is not my fave.
Too much RnR
A little to old for my taste
Cool to listen to since it was historic. Distracting while driving since it was recorded live in a prison
Si pues pero no.
Meh
Great musician, great songs, etc. but fucking live album. Why do this to us. Probably 4 stars for it if it were exactly the same songs as studio recordings. This gets 2.5. Rounded down for the really annoying censorship beeps.
thought I would like it more, didn't care for it that much
I had a hard time listened. Seemed off key to me much of the time. But I loved loved the movie Ring of Fire. Overall I like Johnny cash and June. But this album was hard to listen to
June Carters voice makes me want to burn my ears off. Music isn’t all bad tho.
I was really excited when this popped up this morning, but on closer inspection I saw it was recorded at San Quentin and not the legendary Folsom Prison. The Spotify version has a lot of "heavy" country filler from other artists that weren't my jam, so I've excluded them from this rating. But even then this was disappointing as it didn't seem to have much passion or energy and the editing of the songs to be frank, really sucks. The cover art is really iconic though!
So jetzt hab ichs gsagt
was nice, just don't like live music.... Probably 2/5 for live, 3/5 for actual good audio
I don't like live albums + it's listenable, but I only like 2-3 songs
not the biggest fan of cash but I love that he performed at san quentin. also nice that it ended up being sort of a greatest hits album
okay
Live-optræden i fængsel, country, publikum-drevet, politisk, tilstedeværende
it was okay, i only liked the first track and the constant talking is not enjoyable even though it is a live preformance album
i know this country music but its not that good for me i would not recommend it is because its full of things i feel like people should avoid.
I didn’t even really listen to this album- i tried but i found out i really kinda hate whatever genre this is! At least it taught me that much! I guess the best song was wanted man? Idk why oldie likes this album
Sentenced to boredom
waaaaaay to american for me
I dont rate this album dont really connect with it his other songs outside this album were okay but this one was not for some songs were kinda okay but I wouldn't listen to this again I give it 1.48/10
Sebenernya suka sih country, namun sayangnya saya merasakan bosan dibandingkan kohesif dari album ini. Secara konsep juga yaudah.
I don’t think o liked it
Not a huge fan of
good
No me gustó
This website has 1 more chance before I give up I'm ngl. Too much garbage.
Mucha guitarra irritante
this music is so fascinating to me cus i cant believe people REALLY fw it heavy. i don’t even mean it in a bad way its just such a different world i’ve heard of i walk the line before but never listened to it so i was expecting it to be better than it is i dont hate this as much as ive hated the other albums but like its just. extremely boring and a nothingburger
This sounded very close to a SNL skit. Why can't he tune a guitar? Why does every song sound the same? I just don't get it. I do not want to listen to this again.
In fact, it all reminds me a lot of a balalaika player’s performance at a drunken village wedding. It’s completely baffling why anyone outside his village would find this master of three chords and corny jokes the least bit interesting.
Honestly some of the most plain southern music I’ve heard. His voice isn’t even that good and I frankly don’t understand why Johnny Cash was such a famous artist. His music sounds quite repetitive and uninspired. The lyrics are boring and nothing throughout was a song I’d want to listen to again. The instrumentals were alright and some were interesting but just not for me.

Quando sair o livro eu leio. As musicas tao longe de serem ruins mas me irritei 1.5/5
More than one prison live album is one too many. Not a fan.
a live album where you can barely hear anything
I like what some lyrics say, but nothing more. I didn't like it. The album has a repetitive rhythm and I can't help but feel like I'm listening to children's music
not listening to ts
Not my thing
Not my taste, personally. But ideal to hear in a prison in the late 60s, I guess.
#13 I get it, it's Johnny Cash, but his music does nothing for me...
nah
This is the two hundred eleventh album I’m rating. I was just listening to Norman Fucking Rockwell! and I'd much rather that album was on this list because I really hate Johnny Cash. I doubt anything here is better than Bartender. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Wanted Man, Wreck of the Old 97, I Walk the Line, Darlin' Companion, Starkville City Jail, San Quentin, San Quentin (Reprise), A Boy Named Sue, (There'll Be) Peace in the Valley, and Folsom Prison Blues. Darlin' Companion - June Carter Cash's vocals almost make up for my hatred of Johnny Cash's vocals, but it still isn't better than Bartender. All in all I liked 0/10 songs. His voice isn’t as annoying in the 60's but he still isn't as good as Lana Del Rey or Fiona Apple.
Live albums not great too much hard to understand talking.
216/1089 - For all the moral grandstanding on this website about musicians like Kanye or Morrissey saying mean words or even the more understandable complaints on the criminals on this list, I'm surprised Johnny Cash doesn't get any flack for entertaining criminals. I try to not be biased when reviewing things and think separating art from the artist is a reasonable value but I admit it is challenging sometimes. I'll try and do my best for this one. There's barely any music. Very rudimentary stuff playing the same looping progressions so he can say a story. I get that strophic form exists but the way to have a convincing song that utilizes strophic form is to spice up the instrumentation or dynamics, maybe play with the rhythm a bit if you're a vocalist. If you just have the same crap over and over in the background what's the point of having it in the first place? As for the vocals, Johnny Cash has a voice that really takes the life out of the room. Dry and lifeless, at least the instrumentals were somewhat pleasant. I guess I'm glad I encountered music that doesn't align with my personal values so I could see a different point of view but I'd be more convinced if the music was actually musical. Non-list rec: Alone - Bill Evans (1970) amazing solo piano record. One of my top 10 favorite albums.
Too much talking
...are prisoners.
Me la pela
I like Johnny Cash. I hate live albums. I fucking hate live albums with lots of talking.
I do need to be hitting a darkslide as Bam Margera around a pit of fire or be watching the jackass crew in assless chaps line dancing around some bulls or some shit to enjoy this. Also never realized how the boomers wanted to be the silent generation so badly.
Live album.
Twang twang twang no, I really don’t have to listen to two (2) Johnny Cash prison concert albums before I die. Folsom and San Quentin are both interchangeable and one-note
Unlistenable
Why do people like this? It’s so old and bumbling and nothing he says is remotely funny.
I don’t want live albums bru
Oh no. I listened. That’s it.
For me, country music has always stood for "bad" music since I was a young child. The same goes for German pop music. Country glorifies America, stands for nationalism and rather conservative, backwards values for racism. Instruments are often fiddles, banjos and harmonicas, awful! For me, Johnny Cash was always synonymous with country music and that naturally shaped my view of him. If I'm doing him an injustice, I'm sorry. I only know one song from the live album and that is "I walk the line". The rest sounds almost the same to me. And then this pathetic "western rhythm". I keep feeling like I'm about to go to a saloon or ride in a stagecoach. Awful, just awful. Finally, a note about Johnny Cash's voice. I never liked it, this deep spoken singing, not for me. Rest in peace Johnny, but please be quiet. No stars.
As country goes, this is about as good as it gets. And by that I mean it still sounds like music composed by a four year old who is afraid of anything that includes a minor key.
I listened to a '"live" album version on spotify, I swear this guy talked more than he sang whether there was music or not. Really old and slow music too, not my favorite
my bad, i didn't know the story of Johnny Cash's live concerts in prisons (and apparently there are other concert albums of his on this list). it was interesting to learn about it. Love the energy of the crowd but tbh I don't really care and... I hate country.
Why didn't Sue just change his name? Butch, Zeus, Odin, Killer, Knuckles, Warlock are all good manly man's names. This ode to toxic masculinity hasn't aged well. Best thing about this album is it's length.
I find the prison concert thing to be kind of a cheap gimmick. Like, whooooaaaa dude, so badasssss, you were actually NEAR some REAL LIFE prisoners? No wayyyyy. This album is just one hokey shuffle after another, with a false, unearned veneer of 'grit' siphoned from the prisoners in attendance for what ultimately amounts to marketing purposes.
A live album?? Ugh. I really hope there’s another Johnny Cash album that I can award more stars to ‘cause I don’t have the patience to deal with a live albums…
Not for me. 1/5
No va
Disclaimer, I really like Johnny Cash. I don't get these live albums though. This is the second one I've had on this list, both of which have been him performing at prisons. There's a lot of talking, and at one point he seems to get distracted and play the same song twice. Waste of my time.
I don’t like Johnny cash, this wasn’t that bad but none of the songs I would Listen to again
Overrated, and this is no exception
But.... why? Puzzled by this making the list... sure, it's pretty cool that he's holding a concert at a prison, but still? Feels like 60% of the whole running time is made up from Johnny's elevator talk about various uninteresting things, and the rest is actual music. Not really what I am looking for in an album. I am not big on Johnny Cash, but I found the songs quite dull as well. This would probably lend itself better as a filmed version than something to listen to. Not necessarily 1 star for the music, but for the album execution. I am here for music, not a podcast.
I feel like this album is doubly cheating by being on this list. First of all, having songs we already heard here just performed in a slightly different context doesn't make the songs themselves any more \"must listen\". Same material, the context of the half-way decent performance doesn't change that. And second, and most importantly, the only reason this album is on this list is because this was when Johnny Cash performed \"A Boy Named Sue\" on stage. Throw the rest of the 9 songs away; a single song made this album somehow a \"must listen\", by the logic of this list. But to make matters worse, Johnny Cash didn't even write \"A Boy Named Sue\"; this performance was a cover here. So this entire album is on this list because of one performance of a single song that the titular artist didn't even create. This is the equivalent of saying a student's art gallery is a \"must see\" because the student has some basic paintings we've already seen, but the centerpiece is one copy paper print of a photo the student took of a Van Gogh. Not even his work and we've already seen the rest, how is the whole thing worth a visit? I really question if the creator here understands the concept of \"Must listen to\" sometimes.
Boring, same rhythm, monotone voice, annoying shit
Couldn’t get it to play on Tidal
This album has a certain charm to it. Listening to Johnny Cash's banter is great on this record, and I think it really adds to it. The Carter family is present. A memorable moment is his story about being arrested for picking flowers. And then it leads into a funny song about said incident. The mixing in this record is awful though. The sound levels are inconsistent. When the crowd cheers, they dial that up to 11. Very unnecessary... And honestly, it comes off fake, as a 'cheer' track. Also, music shouldn't be censored. He talks about burning down San Quentin in the song San Quentin... And that's slowed, but they bleep out vulgar words like 'ass' and 'shit' during between song banters. Different times of course... But still. Johnny Cash's songs all sound sort of the same, musically. The guitar work is very similar. But it works for what they're trying to achieve. I've always enjoyed this sort of Country music. And particularly Johnny Cash. Unfortunately, this record is bullshit. 10 songs. 30 minutes long. I have to make note that 2 of these songs are the same song. San Quentin (the song) has a reprise. So he played a shorter version of the initial, sans banter. There are way better and stronger live records of Johnny Cash. This live record sounds incomplete. They must've cut half the set. Also, Folsom Prison Blues, arguably one of the most well known songs of Cash was just one verse. And that was it. Hilariously, the increased volume of the crowd at the end sounded like they were booing at how short that song was instead of cheering and applauding the show. What should have been a great closer, was a big disappointment. Started out strong! Finished horribly. Now, I have no doubts that this show was incredible, if you were there. But why record it and not release the full thing? What's the point? Money! That's why. Record labels wanting to capitalize on Cash's popularity. Not to mentionz these prison shows are a gimmick to uphold Johnny Cash's "bad ass" image. I love the songs, but I can't in good conscience say this is a must heard listen. Maybe I must heard listen to not repeat.
Could not force myself to get through it all. Absolutely not it. Some people may like it and I'm glad those people are not in my vicinity. You do you, though💲
Idgaf about Johnny cash
I have heard of Johnny Cash but never listened to his music because I’m not a huge fun of country. This album confirmed that. I never liked live albums so this album was a set up for failure in my books. I will not listen again.
Nope, nope and nope, I know a lot of people like this guy and his country music... but I just don't get it!! I got to 20 seconds into the second track... and I was already full on pissed off listening to this. That repeat track recipie of annoying bass guitar twanging away with a chickity chick drum skiff and that mournfully droll voice of Johnny just grinds the life out of me. Johnny Cash music never was and absolutely never will be anything I would listen to. It's of an era from 55 years ago Americana country music... the world has significantly moved on musically since then.
Junk. Feels kind of cringey getting into a prison and singing about how much you hate prison to a bunch of criminals
Didn't listen can't stand beeping
not for me
Censorship in the first song, disgusting
Just somehow too american vibe for my taste
Skipped it on purpose
Nah Im not listening to another live album.
Well, for me the album was meh, but maybe that's because I just don't like Johnny's style of talking into the mic instead of singing. I'll say this though, he does have charisma and it shows between each song. Probably won't listen it to it again :)
I really don’t like live album and Johnny Cash just isn’t for me :(
i don't like his voice the instrumentation is "goofy", maybe kinda fun at times
This is a live album which makes it automatically bad as it shouldn’t be on this list!!! Anyway As interesting as the concept of performing at a prison is, I am not a Johnny Cash fan. I did not enjoy this. The songs were just not my style and I wasn’t entertained by his endless talking. He also played one song twice! This is not an album to listen to before you die, it’s an album to listen to in hell. 1.5 … rounded down
I'm not really sure why he started to play prisons, and suspect the motivation was sincere. But this is basically a 'best of'. If this can be considered for that, then, and maybe more so, Nirvana Unplugged should be included. Yeah, my rating is inconsistent, but it really should look at one of his other thirty something albums before this one.
My dislike of live albums is well known by this point. Nobody needs to hear the audience whoop and holler, and whoop and holler these clowns do in abundance. Cash's singing is spot on. The players were abysmally mic'd - the high-hats especially are tinny and sibilant - and the guitars seem to top-out depressingly often. I guess this is probably a result of being staged in a penitentiary, but it doesn't make for a pleasing listening experience. Cash sure does have a brand of toxicity doesn't he? Whether he's playing up to the inmate crowd, or genuinely of that ilk, there is a deep unpleasantness to the lyrics that I really don't appreciate. Shame really, because he does what he does very well.
Livealbum :( Og litt døvt med all bleepingen
Nul!
is nie heel leuk imo
I didn’t listen lol
Awesome
