Paris 1919
John CaleMiddle of the road. Not boring, but doesn't really stand out either.
Middle of the road. Not boring, but doesn't really stand out either.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a very nice journey. The rest is good too, but I understand my dad's frustration about Wish You Were Here outranking Shine On You Crazy Diamond in the annual Top 2000 we listen to. It's just on a different level.
That was a vibe. I like her voice and the synths
I was not expecting that type of percussion in progressive rock. It's kinda groovy. I thought some sections were a bit long and some messy, but overall it was interesting.
Solid album. Most songs are well known for a good reason. It gets a bit repetitive at times, but overall most of the songs are bangers. I'd buy it if I came across it in a cd store.
Quite accessible Radiohead album. Myxomatosis is the oddest track with that rhythm, but it's cool when you get into it.
Definitely an influential album. The songs are a bit short, but that's common for that time and I don't feel anything is missing. Overall it's a fun album.
Not a fan of the spoken word parts, but at least they're short. Overall very good though. Love the synth on Living For The City. I always found the chorus of Golden Lady a bit weak, but the rest of the song is really lovely.
His vocal style is a bit too talky sometimes for my tastes. The title track is great, but not many other songs stand out to me.
Love the guitarwork on Beating Around the Bush. Sounds inspired by Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac. Groovy bass on Love Hungry Man
Best part was Ray Charles
Never heard of them before, but that was lovely. I definitely want to hear more of this.
I think he had some good ideas, but the execution is just bad... Most of the vocals were dreadful. The instrumentation is fine though.
Started good, but was hard to get into the rhythm of Soft Machine. Continued good again, but From: Disco To: Disco is really hard to get through. I get he was trying to push the boundaries of music, but I thought those vocals were unpleasant to the ear. The rest was good. I didn't even mind the drill sounds.
Some interesting instrument choices, but not my favourite of his work
Calming album. I really enjoyed Man In A Shed
Love the contrast between his voice and the sax. Very lovely album
Most of the songs are not my cup of tea. They're not bad. They just don't really do anything for me. Love Is A Stranger is pretty good though. Solid catchy chorus. The main synth riff of Sweet Dreams is brilliant, but the timbre of it always ruined it for me. My least favourite is definitely Somebody Told Me. It's quite lacking in melody. This City Never Sleeps is a decent vibe.
Not really into the vocals sometimes. I can do without the spoken word. Other than that, it's alright.
Very nice sound. I like that the guitar leaves a lot of room for the bass. The guitar itself is also lovely.
For this project I only listen to original tracklistings. Safesurfer is really cool. This album has some varied moods. I wasn't expecting that when it started.
This album has some odd parts, but it's kind of a vibe
Many odd choices. I really enjoyed Badhead. I dig Clover Over Dover. This Is A Low is good too.
Not a lot of variety. It was almost like listening to the same song 10 times in a row.
Definitely sounds like something I'd have in my collection
The Lemon Song is fun. Thank You is lovely. I think the Moby Dick drum solo is too long.
I've always loved Enjoy The Silence. It's like this otherworldly song to me. The rest is quite good too. They're very good at creating an atmosphere.
Aumgn is like a bad trip and so is Peking O, but at least that one has a part that is listenable. The rest of the album is alright.
That was pretty fun
Decent variety. Some songs are danceable and others kinda sleepy
She has an interesting voice.
I'd definitely listen again for the sax and the piano. I felt the drums were a bit too chaotic for me too often. I'm also just not really into drum solos. The bass solo was a welcome change after the chaos though. Part IV felt disjointed dispite being more calm.
Their bio says "bridging the worlds of technical playing and noise chaos" Unfortunately I hate noise chaos and the emphasis is very much on that. The most listenable track is Wonderful Rainbow, because not a lot happens there...
Pretty good, though pretty sleepy for a large part. Bemsha Swing is catchy
It has some really good songs, but also a lot of weird ones. I guess it evens out as about average.
I like Taylor Swift taking a more folky direction. Long Story Short was my favourite. The drums kick it up a notch, breaking away from the mood of the songs before. Closure felt a bit disjointed though.
Not really my genre. The rapping is too monotone for my tastes. The beats are alright though.
Some nice parts, but the chaotic parts are too long.
American Pie and Vincent on one album? Yes, please This was very lovely. He is quite the wordsmith and the melodies are beautiful. The only criticism I can think of is that some of the songs sound more like less good Vincents and less like their own thing.
Pretty good. It just doesn't really grab me in a special way.
Good hits and the rest doesn't fall behind too much. Pretty solid
An album I have! I always really loved Clocks, The Scientist and In My Place. Some of the other songs had to grow on me a bit, but overall it's really solid. Love the volume dynamics in A Whisper. This was a great era for Coldplay
I really enjoyed the intros. It's too bad the focus was taken off the lovely guitarwork after they started singing, because that was my favourite part.
I forgot about Highways of My Life... Great song. Always loved That Lady and Summer Breeze. Especially Summer Breeze... I love their synths and electric guitar. Their lead singer has a very smooth way of singing. Very nice
The Manic Street Preachers have such a great sound. Great voice and great guitars. I also appreciate them having a message in their songs.
Atmospherically it's very good. I'm just not a fan of the spoken word parts. I prefer more melodic vocals. Leviathan also kinda drags on in my opinion because the lyrics are quite repetitive.. Unrelated: the cover art is very pretty and fits well with the feel of the album.
Yes! I have this one and I feel everyone should! Lovely guitar work, vocal melodies and harmonies. I feel most of the songs are on the same high level
Their biggest strength is definitely their harmonies. I wish they'd utilise it a bit more.
Smooth transition from Superstition to Big Brother. Good album but not as good as Innervisions. The hits were definitely the best songs
Cracking is too spoken word to me. Marlene On The Wall is very good. Neighborhood Girls has a very cool instrumental. Too bad a lot of the vocals are quite talky.
Oops, I was expecting Discovery. Homework is not on Discovery's level. Around The World is great. It's got a really good groove. I'm not a fan of Rollin' and Scratchin' nor Rock'n Roll. I really dislike that scratching sound.
It took a bit to get into the title track and he didn't let me down since.
Very nice album overall. I'm just not a fan of the spoken word she does sometimes. Thankfully for me it's not too much. I thought the harmonica didn't fit Furry Sings The Blues. I thought Song For Sharon drags on a bit. I love the addition of Jaco Pastorius on this album. The timbre of his bass is so cool.
Wow, I really liked that! Some songs were surprisingly vibrant and I loved it! His voice is really easy on the ears. The instruments take you places
I have this one. I always really liked the hits. I think it's overall quite solid. I'm just not really a fan of the "Nobody likes you" part that comes up a few times. They have a good sound.
That was really lovely. Just too bad about the vocal compression on the first song.
Not a fan of his vocals. On some songs the vocals are also recorded really badly. Also, what's with the terribly spelled titles? I guess they thought it would be funny.
Not really my guitar style. Too much distortion, I guess. Makes it harder to make the melody shine. Some parts were nice, but I don't see myself seeking this album out again any time soon.
The bass is decent. The other instruments are really weak for the most part. The vocals sound like they weren't trying at all
The instrumentation is good for the most part. Her vocals are overdramatic too often. I quite liked Passionate Fight. The last song is a real drag though.
They have a good sound
It has a few good songs. The rest is kinda boring
The hits and Surrender are very good. The rest is good, but less special.
I'm not the biggest fan of rapping. It's just usually too monotone for my tastes. I think his rap style is about average. The rest is fine for the most part.
I was expecting over the top singing. Glad that didn't happen until the last song.
A bit boring. I liked New York City Song though. My least favourite was definitely (He's Got) The Whole World in His Hands. That was recorded badly and boring on top.
The high pitched sound in "Who's Gonna Take The Weight?" is annoying. Other than that, the samples were good. The rapping is about average. Still not my genre.
Very catchy! Steady rhythms, very enjoyable guitar and bass sound. My favourites are Hard to Explain and Last Nite.
I love Eleanor Rigby, Here There And Everywhere & For No One. Most of the other songs are alright. I can hear the potential of Got To Get You Into My Life. Too bad they didn't do more with it. Tomorrow Never Knows is too chaotic for my tastes
Middle of the road. Not boring, but doesn't really stand out either.
Fun groovy sound
Favourite track: Every Day I Have The Blues. I liked that it's a bit jazzy as well. I could do without story time
That was alright. Upbeat.
Not a fan of Excuse Me. The rest was good. I've always loved Solsbury Hill. I love the guitar work and the nostalgia inducing horns. I wasn't sure I liked Humdrum when it started, but it got beautiful. I liked everything after that. I definitely want to listen to this again.
She has a pleasant voice. Some catchy guitarwork
Some good samples. Some not used well at all. Rapping a bit above average. Still not my genre
Too sleepy for my tastes. I enjoyed the first song though
Quite fun, but too bad the sound quality on most songs is pretty bad. I like the energy of the main vocalist
Decent album
I sure love a folky violin
I like the brass and his dramatic voice
It's fine for what it is. Not my favourite ambient album.
It's AC/DC. Pretty fun, but not very special to me
I really liked the riffs in Sun Hits The Sky (both guitar and synth). I don't like the grunts in the last song Sometimes I Make You Sad. The rest of the album is pretty good. It has some nice riffs.
Lovely harmonies and I enjoy the guitar work as well
The guitarwork is the best part in my opinion. Sometimes it gives me this medieval feel and I love that. I thought the rhythm changed a bit too often in Perpetual Change (though that was probably the point) but the second half of the song was really good.
I don't usually listen to this type of singing style because it's almost spoken word, but there's something about Leonard Cohen that I respect. I always found Suzanne a beautiful song. Part of it is the lyrics
Izzy Izzy Ah might be the worst song on the album. That was annoying. The best song was Best Friends. Overall, the beats and the singing were good. Best hip hop album so far
That was cute
Decent variety of moods. Very good opener. I tend to like British artists and he plays the piano. Of course I was going to like this
I'm not a fan of his raspy voice, but the songs are quite good. Never heard the full intro to Maggie May before. It's really lovely
I was unable to listen to Virgin Velcro and Seasick because they're not available in my country on Spotify or Youtube, but I trust the reviews that they're more of the same. I'd hate to leave the project unfinished. Anyway, a lot of distortion. I think there were some good parts, but most didn't mesh well for me. Most was not catchy or interesting.
I like the inclusion of the organ. I don't hear that a lot in African music. This album is a vibe
I can do without Intro, but at least it's only about a minute. I thought I Went To The Mirror was a bit too mumbly. I thought Little Red Lights is messy, but the guitar solo in the middle is cool. The rest is very good. Why hadn't I heard of this guy before this project?
I think their biggest strength is Karen Carpenter's voice. It's very smooth. It's too bad it's sometimes drowned out by the "backing" vocals. The last song had a very cool outro.
Started very funky! Later less so, but I like it
I bought this album for A Forest. Most of the album are pretty good, but I think A Reflection, Three and The Final Sound are a bunch of nothing.
Papa Is A Rollin' Stone is a timeless classic. I'm not used to hearing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face sung by a man. It's not bad, but I prefer it from a woman. Overall it's a quite good album.
I thought it was pretty good, but started going downhill after the 9th song. Well mainly Hear Me (mumbling), 666 Edit (annoying breaks) and make it Minimal (annoying sounds). The others after that are good, but basically different versions of other songs on the album, so shouldn't weigh too heavily.
What a nice Christmas surprise! That was very cute
This version of Stir It Up feels kinda slow. I guess slow is alright for reggae. "Alright" sums up my feelings about this album.
Otis Redding has an unmistakable style. It's good, but I tend to prefer the versions of songs I know by other artists, so that tells me I don't really love it. Or I'm easily jarred
Love the piano on My Stars. The last 2 songs are a bit odd. Pretty fun album
I love piano based music. There's also some lovely harmonies. I just wasn't a fan of the last 2 songs. Me and a Gun would have benefitted from some instrumentation, I think.
There's maybe 2 listenable tracks. Sounds like they prefer playing with machine parts over playing instruments.
Iggy has some good energy. The songs are alright
Chrissy Hynde's vocals are a bit talky sometimes. I'm not really a fan of that. There's some solid tracks though.
My favourite part was from Private Sorrow to Death. I like that most songs have unexpected outros.
Love the hammond organ on Walk On By. Too bad the first half of By The Time I Get To Phoenix was spoken word.
Love the guitars and organ. I personally don't really care for drum solos
Some catchy riffs. I don't love the vocals, but I feel they're not the main focus, so it's alright. Actually, the vocals are kinda funny sometimes
The middle of the album sounds like a drum circle, which would be more fun if you were participating, I think. The rest is nice. I especially liked Rhapsodia Del Maravilloso and Tribilin Cantore
Too much distortion on a lot of the songs for my tastes. The outro of Ruiner is pretty cool. The best songs are Closer and Hurt.
There were some good samples. Too bad he rapped all over it. It's like he has one tone of voice and nothing else
This is fine. Maybe some songs are a bit too slow, but it fits the mood I think he's going for.
I've been really into atmospheric music lately, so this works. It's also very cool with that bass
I like their sound and energy. I thought they lost it a bit in the middle of the album though. Quite a raw singing style. Not always my thing. Interesting choice to have the drums kick in so late in Answering Machine.
I'm familiar with the Pet Shop Boys, but I hadn't heard any of these songs before. Solid album
I thought it was okay, but it's missing something to be danceable.
Some good riffs, some barely listenable songs and most songs give that feeling of "Hey, is that that one song?... oh... It's not" Not a good sign
This was pretty fun
Some good riffs. Interesting vocalist
Some parts were a bit weird and that one piano dissonant, but most of it was really cool
Not usually a fan of the rapping, but Give It Away is pretty fun. Under The Bridge is great of course. I feel for most of the songs they hadn't really grown into their style yet, if that makes sense. Not my favourite of their work. Low end 3
That folkiness was fun. I didn't expect the banjo
Kinda rambly, kinda funny, kinda charming
The album art is more iconic than the music. The music is fine. It just doesn't really stand out to me
Cool blues rock album. Love the keys too
Detroid Rock City is a banger. I didn't really care for Great Expectations or Beth. Do You Love Me is too repetitive.
Every song is solid. The album flows well and has a good variety of moods and styles. There's very few things I would change (like how muted the backing vocals sound on You Ain't The Problem). I'm excited to relisten to this!
I forgot how nice Kissing A Fool is. I'm not a fan of the lyrics of Father Figure and I Want Your Sex. Especially the latter could have been more subtle. But other than that they don't sound bad at all. Good vocal dynamics to fit the songs. I especially like the airy vocals. Some songs are kinda silly sounding.
I really like the instrumental compositions for the most part. I'm not sure why, but I'm not feeling the vocals. Maybe it's the mixing on some of the tracks.
I enjoyed the fiddle and the accordion
Beautiful harmonies. The best songs are Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Guinnevere
I think they're pretty good at their core, but there's quite a few messy parts that drag it down to a 2.
The coolest part was in the hardest to find song: Gut Feeling / (Slap Your Mammy). Some parts weren't for me (Jocko Homo for example), but most of it was alright
Man, I love the Hammond organ
Some songs are a bit too sleepy. Others are lovely. That was a very cute rendition of How High The Moon. Great performances!
There's 8 versions of this album, so I hope they didn't change the tracks themselves and I'm listening to the "right" versions. I went for the original track listing. Downs is the only real bummer of the album. I love the inclusion of the violin on this album. I can see myself revisiting this
There's some catchy tunes here. Too bad they ruin it with distortion.
It's impressive what kind of soundscape can be created by one man and a guitar (and a bit of piano). Beautiful
Some fun songs, some kinda weird songs
That was pretty cool. I didn't love all of the harmonies, but most of it was good. My favourite stretch was from Can't Let Go to Metal Firecracker.
Some great songs and some great memories, eventhough it was before my time. Love the harmonies and the epic drum in The Boxer. Cecilia makes me want to clap and dance
The low energy vocals sound kinda funny. Especially on some of the more upbeat songs like Creature Of Doom. I quite like their guitar and bass sound
One of the better heavy rock sounds. Some parts are kinda weird though
I quite like their sound. I feel Morrissey has only one type of singing, but the instruments brought a good variety. There were some interesting choices in instruments used sometimes like a marimba.
Some of the songs are kinda boring. Others are pretty good.
I guess I prefer folk Byrds over country Byrds. Not as many harmonizations, which is their biggest strength. Most songs sound too similar.
Very cool sound. I especially like their bass.
It's good that they switched up the upbeat tracks with the slower ones. I really enjoyed the upbeat ones.
That was really refreshing! Quite cheerful and sometimes took a surprising turn. I especially enjoyed the transition from Mud In Your Eyes into Turn Away.
That's some good energy. A bit messy sometimes. I'm not a fan of the spoken word vocals. The yodeling was fun though.
Decent album. My favourites were the longer tracks, but at the same time I felt they were dragging on sometimes.
Very good. The best songs are It's Too Late and Tapestry. I just didn't think her singing style suited the chorus of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. But maybe I'm just spoiled by Aretha
Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a very nice journey. The rest is good too, but I understand my dad's frustration about Wish You Were Here outranking Shine On You Crazy Diamond in the annual Top 2000 we listen to. It's just on a different level.
I sometimes like backwards instruments, but I thought it sounds choppy here. It's good to experiment though. We all know Jimi Hendrix was an excellent guitar player, but the songs weren't. They're fine.
Some parts are really good, like the main motif of So What and All Blues, but I found myself losing interest during some solos.
Second half was best half
If I had to choose a favourite jazz genre it would probably be bossa nova. It's such a good vibe.
I was not expecting vocal flips from Morrissey. I kinda like it
I was not expecting the synth on Save the Life of My Child. The backing vocals were also a bit odd. Voices of Old People... Why is this on an album? The rest is absolutely lovely
She has a very pleasant voice. The way she harmonizes with herself is silk smooth. Everytime I thought there was a moment where I wasn't really feeling it, the album took a turn to make it good again.
Elvis had a very iconic timbre of voice, but he just wasn't as fun as Little Richard
Not a lot of variety, I feel. Their style is good, but not good enough to lift the album above a 3
I guess this is mostly included because it was influential. It has some catchy parts, but mostly doesn't really stand out to me.
I've never been a fan of Tom Waits' vocals. This album I found out he can sound "normal", so apparently he chooses ultra rasp. Also, most of the time when he doesn't use a raspy style, he does spoken word, which is also not my cup of tea. Instrumentally I think it's a decent album for the most part. I quite enjoyed Rainbird.
Most samples are quite good. Not the high pitched noise on Just Don't Give A Fuck. His rapping is like rambling
It has some nice riffs, but it's not outstanding.
Three Days was really cool with the shifting tempo. Dispite the title, Of Course was quite unexpected. Very cool violin. I didn't really feel most of the rest of the album. They have some good energy though.
That was pretty catchy
Oh, man. When I was rating these songs for my own album collection project, I had to sit next to the cd player for most of the second half of the album. That is how smooth the transitions are. I hate the chorus to Carry That Weight, but it's the only part of the album I really don't like. I'd say the biggest highlights are Here Comes The Sun, Something and I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Why is We Will Fall 10 minutes long? That's almost a 3rd of the album. It contributes to making the album kinda boring... At least there were some wah wahs. That was fun.
Some good tracks like Changeling, Midnight In A Perfect World for the most part and What Does Your Soul Look Like pt 1. Also some odd choices, like a sound that reminds me of Chewbacca. The drums are sometimes too busy for my tastes.
Only a few songs I wasn't feeling, including the hidden track, which is kind of a shame because it was a long wait. Overall, a pretty good album
Such a good group. Not my favourite version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine, but it fits their style. I was not expecting to hear a grown man cry for his mommy. Maybe they should have let a child do that.
The weak applause at the end of the album just about sums up my feelings, which is a lot more than I was expecting. Most of the samples are good and there's quite a lot of good singing. Of course there's also Kanye and guests rapping, which was really not for me and damn, I was not prepared for Kanye singing. I guess I get why he chooses to rap.
Nice instrumentation. I'm not really a fan of spoken word, but I could think of it as a poetry recital. It does fit
I felt the longer songs drag on a bit. Other than that, it's good
Good variety of styles. Some cool riffs. I always found Billy Corgan's vocal style kind of interesting especially when he goes from strained (if that's the right word) to a soft voice. It kinda tugs at the heartstrings
Damn, I knew 2/3 of the songs and I don't even go out of my way to listen to Dire Straits. I always find them instrumentally really good, but I'm not a fan of Mark Knopfler's vocal style. Thankfully there were a few songs that aren't very vocally rich. I'd say the best song is Your Latest Trick.
Sounds like they shouldn't have left the garage. One of the band members even fell asleep while recording
Very nice. I'd say my favourite is Just The Way You Are for the beautiful piano and later the sax coming in.
Definitely some cool moments here. I felt the drum solo was way too long though.
That was a vibe. I like her voice and the synths
I liked most of Starálfur. Hjartað hamast has a good intro and the part leading up to the outro was nice too. Viðrar vel til loftárása was really nice instrumentally until that outro took a turn. I'm really not a fan of the vocals and some parts are boring, but there's still a good amount I like.
Definitely some good samples. Loving the jazz elements. Not a fan of his rapping. The best songs were Geto Heaven Part Two and A Song For Assata. I was hoping the features artists would lift the album above a 2, but it wasn't enough. I was disappointed by how they treated Jill Scott's vocals, because I quite like her.
Love the style. I could have done without the shouty parts, but it wasn't a lot, so it's alright
I didn't really care for the first few songs. They're a bit repetitive. I feel the synth throughout the album really helped. Damn, the last 3 songs are jams
Some good samples, though sometimes it doesn't really go anywhere. The rapping ranges from terrible to above average. Not enough on the higher end.
This sounds like being loud for the sake of being loud. Sometimes there's a bit of guitar sound that's nice, but they usually don't play a compelling melody. The singing is also basically one note.
That was fun, but I don't think it really stands out from your average African music.
I'm one of those losers who sometimes buys Best Of/Greatest Hits compilation albums and sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out by not buying the albums (one of the reasons I'm doing this project). I have the Radiohead: Best Of album, but I don't have that strong feeling that I missed out. It is overall definitely a high quality album though.
I like his voice
Relaxing
Refreshing mix of styles
They really dropped the ball with Wars of Armageddon. I was about to give 4 stars until then.
I wasn't feeling it. I'm not a fan of her vocals. I'm not sure if it's her voice or singing style. Maybe it's both
Catchy and fun
I really like the second half of the title track. The first half feels a bit monotone, but I don't mind it as much the second time around because it transitions quite smoothly. I liked the last song best (I Can't Give Everything Away)
He chose a lot of great songs. He didn't necessarily improve them, but it's a nice listen.
I was not expecting that type of percussion in progressive rock. It's kinda groovy. I thought some sections were a bit long and some messy, but overall it was interesting.
It started kinda jarring, but I got into it. Good mix of styles and rhythms.
Love the inclusion of the mandolins on this album. Also great guitar work.
They have some good energy. Not very difficult or varied, but it's fun.
Very good! Love the double lead guitar.
I was expecting a lot less accessible. Sure, there were some weird parts, but overall that was a jam!
I used to dislike her voice, but I got used to it. I think she took jazz in a good direction; a good mix of modern and retro.
A bit of a nightmare to get the original tracklisting together. Anyway there were some bangers but also some tracks that made me scratch my head. I guess it averages out to a 3.
I quite liked The Power and The 2 Of Us. It took me a bit to get into it.
I'm not his demographic
I like it. It's catchy. But I feel around the middle of the album it loses me because it could be more dynamic.
Some good songs, but it felt like most was filler. There's also some cheesy sounds.
I like the enthousiasm of the band. It gets repetitive at times though.
I like her voice
There's definitely potential here. I quite like the guitar work and bass, but the female vocals are not for me. The male vocals are fine. There's too much distortion for my taste though, so unfortunately it drops to a 2.
I quite liked this album. I'm just not a fan of the distortion used in the first 2 songs. Thankfully Satan is short. My favourite was "Is This Music?"
I forgot about Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa. I like it. Spunky version of Will You Love Me Tomorrow
Some good songs, but some I don't get at all.
I think I prefer Bridge Over Troubled Water and Bookends, but this is still great. I always love their harmonies.
I didn't like the intro or some of the more psychadelic sounds, but there's also some good songs. Some groovy drumming and Jimi Hendrix' guitar. Little Wing is too short though.
I think this is only on the list so if someone is doing a project like this, they can say "I listened to Butthole Surfers"
I quite like Famous Blue Raincoat. Never knew that was the title, so that's a win. I appreciate that most of his vocals are sung rather than spoken word. I still think he's a better song writer than singer though.
I like the funky parts. His vocal style can get a bit tiring after a while though.
They have a pretty good sound, but don't really do anything interesting.
Good energy
I wasn't really feeling it to start from, but halfway through it got sleep inducing. The crying kid was the final nail in the coffin. (I guess I take back my comment on Cloud Nine by The Temptations) Okay, Sad Song is actually pretty good, but he could have done more with the chorus.
Charming melodies and sometimes there's a really nice guitar sound like on Just Go Away
The style fusions are quite hit or miss. The female vocals are nice.
There's actually some decent singing here, but the vast majority is grunting and then there's rapping. Way too monotone and I got really tired of it at the end of the album. Instrumentally it's like their only scope is being loud. No interesting melody to be found. And then there's the obnoxious sounds on Tattered & Torn...
Wow, those are the most obnoxious samples I've ever heard on a hiphop album. And then there's Kanye West to top it off.
Everyone knows Aretha can belt. I'd like to shout out her lower softer voice, which is also very nice. Good well-rounded singer
Prog rock with organs and synths is almost an instant win
I liked the inclusion of keys on some of the tracks. For a supergroup they didn't really stand out to me though. Not bad, but they didn't grab my attention.
I liked Traveling Man and A Better Place To Live. Kinda neutral about the rest.
Highlights: Let It Grow and Mainline Florida
The first time I listened to this album was on the day I signed up for this project. I remember liking it, but not really getting what everyone was raving about. Now I'm the one raving about the vocals (the harmonies!), the guitars, the organ... Epic!
Some great songs, others were not for me (especially towards the end of the album)
I have this one. It has some iconic songs like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and A Day In The Life. I quite like She's Leaving Home and When I'm Sixty Four as well. I think it's an odd choice not to end with the reprise, but I guess it was to fake us out with that weird outro of A Day In The Life.
Good energy, but I felt it didn't have a lot of variety and I got a bit tired of it towards the end.
I liked the guitar solo in Warning. The rest is alright.
I'm a sucker for harmonies
Strange volume mixing. Groove Is In The Heart was so much louder than the rest.
This might be my coolest find in this project. Djed on it's own is already a complete journey and they just keep going. It gives me that rare sense of wonder.
Some parts were a bit boring. Other parts were really lovely. That evens out to about average.
Catchy, catchy, catchy The title track was a nice surprise
It's cute, but everything is sung with about the same intonation. I think I'd like it more with a bit more variety on that front.
That singer is already a struggle to listen to and then they do stuff like "Thriller!", "Blow Daddy-O" and "Codex". Those really ruined their chance to stay above 1 star.
Not the sound I was expecting. I guess I might have confused them with a different band from around that era. I really enjoyed it though. I can see myself seeking this out again. During Rococo I turned the volume up and didn't bring it down for the rest of the album.
Why?
Fun
Above average rapping, in my opinion. I didn't mind it for the most part.
My dad played Gigantic to Where Is My Mind? occasionally while I was growing up. Where Is My Mind? is definitely great. Overall they have a great sound, but sometimes a bit weird and I feel the occasional talking holds it back.
The beats and samples are alright, but Ice Cube sounds about the same throughout the whole album. Also, why so many skits?
That was nice. Love his organ and the sax was nice too
Bob Dylan has written some great songs (Mr. Tambourine Man; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue). I just don't think he's the best performer. When "It's Alright, Ma" started playing, I could have sworn I had already heard it on this album. That's how similar Bob Dylan's songs sound. Also, that song is just too long.
Lost In The K Hole and Where Do I Begin had some nice moments, but unfortunately there were more moments I didn't like.
The bass on Insanely Jealous of You is fun. Decent album
Very cool. Good variety. Love (heh) the intro and outro of Revelation. The vocalist is a bit much there though. I didn't even mind the drum solo.
That was fun
The music is fine, but it's all the same vibe
That's quite a mix of styles. Some parts I didn't like, but a lot more that I did enjoy
Other than a few blips (and that's just parts. not entire songs), this is really great. There's some absolute classics and most of the songs that were new for me, are bangers as well.
Groovy!
It started great, but some parts were a bit too experimental for my tastes.
One of the better rappers. Good use of samples and singers. I felt it fell off a bit at the end of the album though (last few songs).
Very cool, but a bit long. It's also a little unfair for a rating project to have albums with songs from other albums, but the orchestra adds a lot.
Good samples. He uses a ridiculous voice half the time and his rapping is exhausting half the time. When they're just talking, I tune out.
I like Where Are We Now? I thought this album was fine, but not a must hear.
I don't like everything, but it's quite decent. They use good samples and their flow is good for the most part. I can do without the skits though. The best song was Eye Know.
Sounds like it would be good as a soundtrack for a movie. Not one I want to see though.
Not their best work. I was kind of bored.
It's alright. I appreciate the variation in instruments. Not crazy about the female vocals.
Good samples, but not a lot of singing. I thought the rapping was about average. Rappers and their fucking skits...
I like their style on most songs, but their singer gets on my nerves. I didn't really like Milk and Rememo. The best one was probably Velvet Snow.
Dramatic style. I quite liked it. The only part I wasn't a fan of is the echo sounding vocals in a few songs. That was kind of distracting.
This was kind of a downer. I did like Heavy Metal Drummer and Pot Kettle Black though.
Some songs have some real nice samples and instrumentation, like the intro, Real People and It's Your World. I don't even mind John Legend while I usually find him a try-hard.
That was really good. My favourite tracks are Has My Fire Really Gone Out? Shadow Of The Sun & Wild Wood
A few moments that made me think "Hmm... That was weird", other than that it's just really good. I liked how Mood For A Day contrasts with the rest.
The best songs were It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues and Desolation Row. Though the last one is a bit long.
Lauryn Hill is a good singer. I wish she did more of it.
I always found Poison Arrow a weird song, but maybe it's just jarring on the radio. It fits well here. This is a banger of an album.
Love their harmonies! The best moment was probably when they sang the melody of the brass from the intro of God Only Knows.
I was expecting weird (possibly in a good way), which this wasn't. It was nice. The vibe doesn't change a lot though. I feel that holds it back.
Earlybird is fun
Sometimes a little messy, but overall just a vibe. I especially enjoyed their bass.
It's alright. Free Bird kinda drags on. At least it changes around the halfway mark.
The most different Bowie album I've heard so far. Very atmospheric, but I feel there's something missing to really draw me in.
The best songs were at the end of the album, except for the outro. Independent Women Pt II and Happy Face were pretty bad. I don't care for the diss tracks either.
I really liked this album, but Mother was a real bummer.
Well done soundscaping. The titles fit
Too bad about the spoken word. Otherwise very good atmospheric album.
I think Downtown Train has potential, but Tom Waits might by my least favourite singer ever. I think his vocals are agonising on the entire album. Unfortunately some of the instrumentals are also agonising.
Cat Stevens is one of those artists I like, but just don't love.
Some great songs here. How Can I Be Sure, I Don't Love You Anymore and It's Love are my favourites.
Not something I see myself revisiting, but I gotta appreciate it for conveying scenes with just sound.
I often see a lot of praise for King Crimson, but this was my first time listening to them. Most of it wasn't what I expected, but it's quite nice. I can do without the second half of Moonchild though (The Illusion). That's a bit too experimental for my tastes.
Never got the hype for Oasis. What a whiny way of singing.
I'm not a fan of the canned sound in the beginning, but the album got better. The tracks that stand out most are Wilmot and the title track.
Sweet Child O' Mine is great. Slash is a legend. The other hits are fun. Axl Rose's vocals are something you have to be in the mood for to enjoy because they're quite silly. Very memorable. I can do without the moaning.
There's a few songs I don't care for, but more songs that I think are great. Rolling in the Deep was huge and rightfully so. It really packs a punch
Roadhouse Blues sounds familiar. The rest was new to me. I enjoyed it! My favourites are Peace Frog, Blue Sunday, Queen of the Highway and Indian Summer.
I was expecting worse. The instrumentation is nice for the most part. It's not very rap heavy. I'm just always on the fence about whether I like Pharrell Williams' voice. At least there's not a lot of falsetto.
I felt some songs were trying to be another Tiny Dancer, but I really liked Holiday Inn and All The Nasties.
I have a Best Of compilation album by Tears For Fears and it might as well have been filled with this album (save for a few songs that would be missing). This album should be in my collection.
Jamiroquai is always a vibe. My favourites aren't here though.
I love their sound. Great singer. Catchy melodies. Great guitar sound. I don't think I've ever heard a bad song by Manic Street Preachers. I should buy more of their albums, including this one.
I love the transition from I Would Die 4 U to Baby I'm a Star. I Would Die 4 U is probably my favourite Prince song. it's not very melodic, but somehow it just hits. Prince can be a bit much as a performer, but overall I thought it was good. Good fun energy and ending on an emotional note.
Good selection of songs. Sometimes it's a bit samey, but I guess that's the risk when going unplugged. I enjoyed the inclusion of the accordeon. The best song was The Man Who Sold The World. That's just a great song.
Funk is fun. Sex Machine ranges from weird to groovy.
Lovely album. Tall In The Saddle was my favourite.
I wasn't a fan of the first track: Facelift. I was expecting to give a 1 or 2 star rating, but the others were a lot better. I especially enjoyed Out-Bloody-Rageous.
Some parts were really not for me. Others were nice, but not groundbreaking
Misbeaten was cute.
I don't think I had heard Aja in full before, but it sounds like an absolute classic.
I was glad when it was over. That should say enough.
Chic is great, though sometimes they get a bit repetitive.
The Weight is great. I like the intro of Chest Fever. Overall I thought it was alright. Not great.
The jaw harp amused me. There's also some lovely guitar and banjo work
The best songs are at the end of the album. There's some cool guitarwork scattered through this album.
I didn't know Cee-Lo Green rapped this much. I was trying not to listen to Hip-Hop right now. Oh well. Some decent songs, but also some terrible ones (Childz Play and Scrap Metal for example), in my opinion.
My favourite of her work so far. Those last few songs were spunky!
Good blend of older and newer styles. My favourite would be Tears Dry On Their Own. I didn't used to like her very much. It turned out I had to get used to her voice. It's quite distinct.
Damn, I loved that! Never heard of them before, but I want more of this!
It's alright. It gets a bit repetitive at times.
This fits this hot weather today. Some transitions were very smooth. Others not so much.
Cocteau Twins is lovely. I love the contrast between the dark atmosphere and the high vocals.
I dig the guitar and the bass.
I like their rock approach. Their rap is very in-your-face, which can be annoying. I'm feeling generous though.
Some classics here. I didn't know I knew "Waiting in Vain". I guess I had never caught the title. Good song though. When Bob Marley sings the phrase "Three little birds", it drives me up the wall though. I just don't get that timing.
Ah, here's the reminder that I need more Irish folk music in my life
Not my favourite work of Queen. Ogre Battle sure was something.
That was cool
Hmmm... I remember Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love sounding cooler than I just heard. Anyway, overall it's fun and energetic. I'd put it on again.
Some good sngs here, but also quite a bit of filler. The best songs are Sweet Life and Lost.
That was not bad. Relaxed sound with a bit of eletric guitar.
It's fine. Not really special to me.
This is really lovely music, but the first time I heard one of these songs was on Youtube and someone posted a major spoiler in the comments of a series I hadn't finished watching. Fuck that person and anyone who posts spoilers in random places. Still really lovely music on this album.
That's some good energy
I can do without the circus music and the talking. Other than that it was an okay album. Maybe a bit long. The best song was Without You.
I kinda liked Cripple Creek, but other than that this album sure is a 'skip'.
Smooth voice and lovely songs
I still don't like this voice very much, but the harmonies largely make up for that.
I've heard about half the album before. Some great songs here like Paranoid Android, Karma Police, No Surprises and Lucky. Subterranean Homesick Alien was new to me and I really enjoyed it. I can do without Fitter Happier.
I have this one. It's not my favourite of their albums, but still very good. I feel it's actually let down a bit by some of the hits... Supermassive Blackhole has this dirtiness, especially when Matt really gasps out the title. I know Knights of Cydonia is super epic and popular, but I'm always let down by the vocals in the second half of the song. The melody is too simple, in my opinion. My favourites are Starlight, Soldier's Poem and Invincible.
It sounded like everyone was trying to show off and forgot to listen to each other.
It kept toeing the line between 2 and 3 stars. It didn't end up winning me over.
This was nice. I don't think I'd call it essential listening, but I did enjoy it.
Not quite as adventurous as the later Beatles. Not bad at all though. My favourite is And I Love Her.
Pretty cool. I got Plok vibes at some point and I liked the synth.
Some decent guitar and bass work here, but I don't care for the vocals or about 2/3 of the songs.
I only like Wonderwall. This album was a bit less whiny than the other Oasis album though, so I guess I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. There are some decent melodies.
Some songs sound like straight up rants. What an annoying rapper. I didn't care for most of the samples/instrumentation. There is some decent singing, but not enough to make a difference. Flowers was definitely the best song. Must be because Michael Kiwanuka is on it.
I'd like Epic more if the chorus was longer. Surprise! You're Dead! was weird. Zombie Eaters was probably my favourite, followed by Woodpecker From Mars.
Norah Jones has a nice voice. The album gets a bit boring at times though, but it's mostly because the mood doesn't change a lot.
That was so unremarkable, I would have believed it if someone told me it was their debut.
Kind of average pop music. She has a nice voice, but almost the entire first half of the album had quite large parts that were just monotone. Disappointing. I hope for the swifties that she had better synths on Taylor's Version. I felt they didn't fit with her voice. The best songs were Blank Space and Clean.
This was cool. There were few moments that I didn't like very much. My favourites were the title track and State of Mind.
Ray Charles is great, but I was hoping for more bangers. The ballads were nice, but felt a bit samey.
I enjoyed it. Good vibes
Good energy. That was fun
The best songs were The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek
Short and sweet. This is cute.
Cool drum patterns in Atrocity Exhibition and Heart and Soul. Some songs have about the same feel as The Cure sometimes has. I enjoy that.
Funky Bowie! I didn't like his version of Across The Universe though. It's strangely aggressive.
I remember D.A.N.C.E. from when this album came out. I'm not a fan of the heavy distortion sometimes used on this album. Other than that it's sometimes kinda weird, but mostly cool.
They have some good things going. I like the drums and synths. I'm not really a fan of the rap, but it could have been a lot worse. I prefer this album over Mezzanine. Unfinished Sympathy is an incredible song.
Weird at times, but also nice at times. I've always liked their version of Tainted Love. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye was a good one as well.
Some real anthems here. Why does Everything Will Be Alright sound so compressed though?
Nice harmonies, but I felt they didn't put emotion in.
I have this one and I remember being a bit disappointed when I first listened to it. I was expecting rock, so the style was quite unexpected, but it's not a bad listen at all. It has some lovely melodies.
Some parts kinda drone along, but the main parts are really cool. I knew about 3 of them because I have a Jazz loving dad, which is kind of a blessing.
Some decent music here, but quite a bit of talking. I came for music. Not for an audio-book.
My favourites were Thirteen, The India Song and Watch The Sunrise. Good band!
Wild Children and Listen To The Lion are lovely. Domino and Gloria are bangers. He has a good live band and he brings the right energy!
Steady rhythms. I really got into it at She's So Loose.
I already knew I.G.Y, New Frontier and The Nightfly. They are great. Most of the rest is great too!
I love her early work, but hadn't heard this album before. I like that there were a lot of strings. I didn't like the harmonies on Lionsong very much. I loved the contrast between Björk's voice and Anohni's. My favourite song was Stonemilker.
George Michael's sound matured quite a bit compared to Faith. I'm also impressed by how the longest songs really don't feel long. Cowboys and Angels is gorgeous. Something to Save is also beautiful.
I didn't realise Bad Moon Rising was so short. It's one of the more enjoyable oldies I used to play in a band. The rest of the album is also enjoyable.
Dire Straits is my number one pick for bands I would like if they had a different singer or vocal style.
I didn't know David Bowie and Iggy Pop wrote Tonight together and that this was the original. That's pretty cool. Overall it's an enjoyable album, though not very outstanding. I enjoyed it more than his work with the Stooges that I have heard so far.
Best Bob Dylan album so far. He put some real effort in singing. The guitar work is lovely.
Danny's Song was my favourite. Long album, but good background music.
I really started to get into it at Alegria, Alegria.
Weird outros on All About Love and See The Light. Banger of an album though.
Good sound
I didn't like Atlantis To Interzone very much because it had annoying sounds. Very rough sound on Four Horsemen of 2012 as well. Most of the other songs were quite good. Golden Skans sounds familiar.
My brother has this album. I hadn't heard it in a long time. It's better than I remembered. Skin has a great voice!
Sometimes I ponder reusing melodies. Is it lazy? In the end it doesn't matter if it's lazy or not if it has a function. I feel here it pulls the soundtrack together and applies different moods. It works.
Every time they sing together, it sounds really washed out. Not a very Excitable album. The title track was my favourite.
Some real good energy. Kinda shouty, but it fits the style. Come Out and Play was one of my favourites, so that was a nice hidden track.
The first 3 songs and Walls of Sound are very unpleasant. Thankfully United is only 16 seconds long. Dead on Arrival started out listenable and kept getting worse. Weeping is mostly boring. Are we getting some actual music on AB/7A? I liked that. Blood on the Floor sounds like a song, but it's like I'm 2 rooms away from where the music is playing. The rest is mostly talking with some sounds, which I really don't care for. Not the worst, but still a bad album.
Best Blur album I've heard so far. Most songs are quite good. Most of the experimental things worked out well.
He has a great band. Most of these songs are great. I forgot about Freddie's Dead.
This is a good time. There was just one moment where I felt that the percussion that was just coming in, was out of place.
Most of this album sounds like bad radio jingles. How stoned were they?
I feel I would appreciate it so much more if I had been there.
Damn, this is full of bangers! I thought I only knew Blue Monday, but Love Vigilantes sounds familiar
I never really got the appeal. The songs aren't very special. Some are boring even. I do like Dancing In The Dark though. Inoffensive though.
Even if I ignore the speaking and distortion, the songs are decent at best.
Not as funky as some of his other work, but still very good.
I forgot about Head Over Heels. I like it. Shout out to Soldiers and Slipping Through My Fingers. ABBA's melodies sometimes give this nostalgic feeling, while some song are a little cheesy.
Damn, he used his voice well. I've loved the title track since I first heard it about 5 years ago. I got some new favourites in Dream Brother, Mojo Pin, Last Goodbye and Lover, You Should've Come Over. Damn, that's half the album. I love the moody atmosphere, the guitars and those organs.
There's some good songs, but he's also a bit rambly for my taste sometimes.
I'm not a fan of the singer, especially his falsetto and when it's almost spoken word. I enjoy the instrumentation though. It's quite nice.
What a lovely voice. My favourite song was Miss Chatelaine.
I've never been a fan of her voice. Boring album.
Oof, the mic quality on Wanted Man... Again, this would be more fun if I were in the audience.
It got a bit messy in the middle, but other than that, I quite enjoyed that. My favourites were All the Way from Memphis and Ballad of Mott The Hoople.
Not a fan of Pilgrim. I love Tides. This is one of the more interesting drum & bass albums I've heard so far.
Hotel California is one of the most overplayed songs ever, in my opinion. It is well written though. I always found something a bit lame about New Kid In Town. Not a fan of The Last Resort. I think the melody is a bit too predictable. The rest is decent.
I want to like this, but I don't quite connect. Maybe it needs more listens.
My favourite songs were Pyramid Song, Knives Out & Dollars and Cents. I didn't really get into Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors. I couldn't understand what Thom York was singing on You And Whose Army & I Might Be Wrong. I don't generally find lyrics super important, but I feel it may have helped here. Life In a Glasshouse has a weird vibe.
Quite a cheerful vibe
I have this album. I don't play it a lot, but it's really lovely.
Landmark album of my early teenage years. My dad had it. My brother got a copy from my uncle. I got it too. Alanis Morissette is the reason I wanted to become a singer-songwriter.
